This Private Jet Trip Takes You Around the World in 22 Days in Lie-flat Seats

Luxury tour operator Safrans du Monde brings French flair to around-the-world private jet trips.

With around-the-world private jet tours drawing plenty of attention from well-heeled travelers, French luxury travel operator Safrans du Monde is offering a brand-new Grand Classiques World Tour, a 22-day journey that begins and ends in Paris this fall.

It's a true around-the-world trip, with multiple days spent at each destination. The first stop is Rio de Janeiro, where guests will visit the famed Ipanema and Copacabana beaches, as well as Sugarloaf Mountain. Next up is Cusco, Peru, the gateway to Machu Picchu, followed by Chile's Easter Island for a double dose of ancient history. 

The voyage continues across the Pacific with a stop in French Polynesia before making its way to Sydney, where guests will take a private tour of the Sydney Opera House. Then, guests are flown northwest to Hanoi and Ha Long Bay in Vietnam and Siem Reap in Cambodia to see Angkor Wat. And the last leg includes two more ancient wonders: the Taj Mahal in Agra, India, and Petra in Jordan, plus the otherworldly desert of Wadi Rum.

When guests aren't on Safrans du Monde's private Airbus A340, where they're treated to fine dining — Champagne included, of course — and luxe lie-flat seats, they're hosted in five-star hotels in each destination.

What sets Safrans du Monde apart from other private jet tour operators is that there are two classes of service: Club Safrans and Première Safrans. While both are all-inclusive, Première Safrans takes the journey to another level, offering first-class seats on the plane rather than business class, exclusive excursions, and ultra-luxurious hotel stays. Cruising Through the Air for the Ultimate World Tour

W ith familiar names such as Aman and Four Seasons in the game, air cruises—a concept that connects travelers to multiple destinations on a single trip via a private jet—are trending among elite circles today.

The Paris-based Safrans du Monde, however, was a frontrunner in the space when Guy Bigiaoui launched the brand in 2003. The former airline-industry veteran who worked in sales for carriers such as Air France and Alitalia (now defunct), says that he envisioned offering travelers the ultimate world tour.

Safrans du Monde offers two air cruises a year on an Airbus A340 that has been refitted with 100 seats, a lounge and a bar. They span between 24 to 25 days each and hit a diversity of locations, including Easter Island, Bora Bora, Tasmania, Queenstown, Singapore, and the Serengeti; the price begins at around US$81,000 per person.

Bigiaoui, 60, spoke with Penta about his air cruises and what experiences and amenities his guests seek most on these getaways.

Penta: Safrans du Monde offers two styles of air cruises. Can you explain what they are, and how they differ?

Guy Bigiaoui: The seats on board our Airbus A340, which has fully flat beds, are the same for all guests. However, our Première Safrans guests enjoy significant upgrades on all the other moments of the tour, such as menus and wine selection on board, smaller groups during visits, stays in larger rooms or suites and special excursions, such as a luxury train in Machu Picchu and helicopter flights in multiple destinations.

How do you choose your destinations?

The itineraries are meant to offer a panoramic vision, and each destination illustrates a different facet of the world. It may be for its unique natural beauty or fauna, its cultural exception, or the paradise feeling it brings such as with the Maldives.

The flight durations are also considered. If the trip entails one long flight such as eight hours, for example, the next air trip will be three or four.

Who is your customer, and how has that changed over the years?

We welcome solos, couples, and friends traveling together. They are mainly American and Europeans, mostly aged between 55 and 75 and share a strong desire to see the world without sacrificing luxury.

Quite often, they love the trips so much that they book another air cruise.

In recent years, we have seen more clients in their 30s and 40s, who have come into money at a young age and want to spend it on the exclusivity that an air cruise gives them.

What changes has your company seen in travel trends since the pandemic?

Since the pandemic, we started to observe luxury travelers who want to get the most out of their time and money. They want quality experiences that allow for deeper exploration of places and enriching encounters with local people. They’re more interested in capturing memories and not acquiring material goods.

When it comes to on-the-ground experiences, which ones resonate most with travelers?

Dining under the stars in a privatized Angkor temple while the majestic apsara dancers of the Royal Ballet of Cambodia bring back life to the carved “bas reliefs” of Angkor Wat visited earlier the same day. Soaking in the sunset on Easter Island while holding a glass of champagne. These are the two most talked about ones.

Luxury travel is also about responsibility, so sometimes we visit a school or a community and may participate in a project such as repainting a building.

We also add in surprises every step of the way that our guests comment on again and again. I can’t say what they are because they wouldn’t be surprises anymore.

What amenities do travelers value most, both in the air and at hotels?

The French touch when it comes to food and wine, the space on board, the freedom to choose among a variety of explorations at destinations, the quality of our local guides, and our team of at least 12 people, who are at their disposal throughout the journey such as me as the host, our tour leaders, coordinators, and videographer who creates a 30-minute movie that’s personalized for each guest.

They also appreciate the physician and chef who fly with us on the plane.

On the ground, our guests enjoy our carefully picked restaurants and hotels with large rooms and the small size of each independent group that gives this rare feeling that you’re traveling with a group of your friends.

Given the complexity of this trip, the type of aircraft planned and/or one or more stopovers could be modified, or even replaced, justified by an event external to the organizer and unforeseen at the time of publication of the brochure (January 1st 2024, in particular for hotels and/or with regard to authorizations to land or take off from a planned airport). If the group does not reach the minimum number of participants for the type of aircraft, the Air Cruise may be canceled. For significant changes, such as cancellation of the departure due to a lack of participants or a change in the price of the trip or a significant change in the itinerary (more than one stopover), the customer will be informed, if possible, at least 21 days before departure. In each of these three cases, the client will have a period of 8 days upon receipt of the notification to accept the new proposal or request the cancellation of his registration. The ultrarich are spending over $100,000 on 'air cruises' that traverse the world by private jet — take a look at the luxury planes

• Luxury brands such as Four Seasons and Abercrombie & Kent sell around-the-world "air cruises."
• The companies use specially-modified private jets, typically featuring lie-flat seats and an onboard chef.
• While the exclusive tours aren't cheap, many upcoming journeys are already sold out.

In March 1923, over 400 deep-pocket travelers arrived back in New York City after spending 130 days at sea aboard the world's first around-the-globe cruise .

One hundred years later, the ultrawealthy are still voyaging around the world in style — but many have traded in the half-year boat ride for three weeks on a private jet.

Luxury brands including Abercrombie & Kent, Safrans du Monde , TCS World Travel, National Geographic, and Four Seasons all offer multi-day "air cruises" that fly to nearly every corner of the globe.

And, for the most part, these companies aren't using purpose-built private planes from manufacturers like Gulfstream and Bombardier — but rather large Boeing and Airbus jetliners complete with first-class accommodations for every passenger.

These high-end experiences aren't cheap, though. Customers are spending six figures on the all-inclusive tours , which include flights, meals, excursions, and upscale hotels.

The niche market has been growing thanks to a post-pandemic rise in private aviation — and people are willing to pay up to avoid the hassles of commercial travel .

According to A&K, its September 2023 tour to Africa , which starts at $134,500, is completely sold out. Global tours operated by TCS and Four Seasons and scheduled to depart this fall are also waitlisted.

Granted, the specially-modified aircraft can only carry a few dozen people at one time, jacking up the price.

But, the exclusivity is part of the allure. Take a look at five of these private planes.

The Airbus A321neo is already a fan-favorite plane for airlines, but it is particularly popular for air cruises.

Companies including Four Seasons and TCS use the Airbus A321neos for their jet expeditions, favoring the twin-engine airliner for its low-cost operation and efficiency.

TCS introduced its A321neoLR in 2021, which is designed to be a "calming oasis" for passengers.

Features include leather-lined seats, wood-like floors, stone countertops, and mood lighting — all to "elicit feelings of tranquility and serenity."

TCS says  the next-generation aircraft — which is the LR 0r "long-range" version — will emit 20% fewer emissions compared to the Boeing 757 private jet it's replacing.

The 52-seater plane is fitted with lie-flat recliners, "extra large" lavatories, and a self-serve minibar.

The premium seats do not have direct aisle access, however, meaning window-seat passengers need to climb over the aisle when the seat is in bed mode.

This is a common problem on single-aisle planes with business-class seating and is present on most of these VIP jets — though most guests are likely traveling together, so it's not a dealbreaker.

On board, travelers are set to be accompanied by 18 crew members, including a physician.

TCS says  an "emergency room-trained physician" will be with guests during the entire trip, including in the air and on the ground.

Meanwhile, customers have access to WiFi, when available, and can pass the time video streaming on a provided tablet.

Tours typically start and end in Florida, but can cover several continents all in one trip.

The aircraft's smaller size coupled with its 4,000-mile range gives TCS a lot of route flexibility because it can travel to a larger variety of airports.

Similar to TCS, the hotel giant Four Seasons operates a branded A321neo on world tours — its most glamorous costing over $200,000.

An April 2024 trip, which spans countries like the Seychelles in Africa and the Galapagos in Ecuador, starts at $215,000 per person, according to Four Seasons .

On board, there are 48 recliners, each with lie-flat capabilities and more than six feet of legroom.

Accompanying guests are a physician and a chef who can cook meals on board using local ingredients collected at each destination along the trip.

A chef is someone guests can expect across most of these luxury tour operators.

Also available is a dedicated lounge space, as well as lavatories that double as changing rooms.

The lounge has high-top tables, snacks, and a staff member serving drinks — creating a perfect space for chatting or stretching your legs.

Another common twin-engine airliner used for around-the-world air cruises is the Boeing 757.

Although older and less efficient than the A321neo, the 757 has been a workhorse for medium-haul travel, particularly across the Atlantic .

Carriers like Icelandair and United Airlines have flown the plane between the US and Europe for years, though both are replacing it with the A321neoXLR — the type's longest-ranged variant. As previously mentioned, TCS has already done the same for its air cruises.

National Geographic is probably the most recognizable brand operating the dual-engine plane, with most of its trips only costing five figures.

The company's cheapest trip treks through Central and South America and starts at $88,000, while its most expensive tour visits Europe, Africa, and Asia and starts at $108,000.

But, unlike competitors, the 75-seater jet features large recliners instead of lie-flat beds.

The seats still come with amenities like inflight power and an adjustable leg rest, with the design more comparable to premium economy compared to business or first class.

Also on board will be flight attendants, a chef, a doctor, an engineer, a dedicated luggage handler, and three pilots, National Geographic says.

The VIP perks such as the chef and luggage handler contribute to the cost of that six-figure price tag, though they appear to be the standard for luxury air-cruise travel.

Also using the Boeing 757 on world trips is the luxury tour operator Abercrombie & Kent.

Tours start at $135,000, though A&K's next scheduled trip in September is already sold out.

The company's plane features plush loungers in a 2×2 layout, each with a massage and lie-flat function.

A&K leases the plane , as well as its pilots and cabin crew, from Icelandair — a common practice among tour companies.

For example, Titan Airways operates the aircraft on behalf of both TCS and Four Seasons, though the latter says it trains its own flight attendants.

Guests can also expect premium onboard catering, an iPad loaded with entertainment, and noise-canceling headphones to match.

The seats themselves do not have inflight TVs attached, and passengers can expect a customized design instead of Icelandair branding.

While most companies use narrowbody jets for these VIP tours, the French company Safrans du Monde uses an Airbus A340 quad-jet — meaning it sports four engines instead of two.

The Airbus A321 and the Boeing 757 are both single-aisle planes, while widebodies like the A340 are primarily used for long-haul international flying.

The Airbus plane is favorable for its range and capacity, though its fuel-hungry engines make it less efficient than next-generation narrowbodies like the A321.

Safran du Monde leases the aircraft from the Maltese private charter airline AirX Charter, recognizable by its white and green livery.

The plane flew for SriLankan Airlines up until 2016 and have also been used during the pandemic .

On board, there are 100 lie-flat seats in a 2×2×2 layout. Again, not all passengers will have direct-aisle access — but the layout means a majority will.

Safrans' Airbus A340 only has premium seats, but the aircraft was originally designed to accommodate up to 440 people in an all-economy layout.

In the back of the plane, guests will find a few rows of more private seats, as well as couches.

There's a lot of space for people to socialize and relax without having to be confined to their seats.

"We can have a real conversation sitting on the sofa, having a drink," Safrans du Monde CEO Guy Bigiaoui said in an April video tour of the jet.

Travelers can expect premium meals, tray tables, linens, and power.

Photos of the interior show high-end plating for gourmet meals and premium drinks, such as Champagne and wine.

The company says guests can expect to travel between four and eight hours, though some flights can trek up to 13 hours.

The lie-flat beds are essential for these long-haul treks, especially since Safrans says it is targeting "super VIP" individuals, like heads of state, sports teams, and orchestras.

While not an around-the-world tour, one honorable mention flies a customized widebody to the remote continent of Antarctica.

People already spend thousands of dollars to sail to the seventh continent by boat , but the superrich can shave off time — and avoid the nauseating Drake Passage — using planes.

Starting at $14,500, the luxury tour operator White Desert is set to transfer people from South Africa to Antarctica on an A340 private jet complete with business and first-class seats.

The A340 formerly flew for Emirates , but now treks five hours each way and lands on an icy runway in Antarctica. 

The company's cheapest tours spend only three hours on the seventh continent , while the most expensive can last over a week and cost six figures.

Four Seasons lance des tours du monde en jet privé pour riches clients

Le groupe hôtelier Four Seasons va proposer ses premiers tours du monde en février - -

Four Seasons commercialisait déjà des voyages autour du monde, en proposant d'aller d'un de ses hotels de luxe à l'autre, situés dans les plus beaux endroits de la planète. Mais entre les palaces, les clients devaient voyager en charter.

A compter de février prochain, le groupe d'hôtellerie canadien va proposer une formule incluant le voyage et l'hébergement. Les clients monteront à bord du tout nouveaux Boeing 757 aux couleurs de Four Seasons . Habituellement, cet avion peut embarquer plus de 200 personnes. Mais là, il sera entièrement redessiné pour accueillir 52 passagers seulement.

Des services haut de gamme à bord

Ces clients fortunés bénéficieront de fauteuil-lit des plus confortables, de repas cuisinés par les plus grands chefs. Pour passer le temps, ils auront accès au wifi, à des soins Spa et autre service de divertissement haut de gamme.

Four Seasons imite ainsi l'exemple d'une chaine hôtelière indienne qui offre des charters de 6 places pour ses clients.

Le groupe canadien va proposer divers itinéraires autour du monde. Le prix pour 3 semaines oscille autour de 100.000 dollars par personne. On peut même réserver l'avion tout entier pour 10 jours. Là, c'est évidemment un peu plus cher:2 millions de dollars.
