Sun Cruise Resort & Yacht - The World’s First On-Land Cruise Ship

The world’s first on-land cruise ship, this hotel takes all the joy of a cruise ship and combines it with the usefulness of staying in one place.

The sound of waves lapping at the hull is simulated, so you can imagine you are on a cruise.

The location is on a cliff at Jeongdongjin beach, renowned for having the best sunrise in Korea. The revolving bar and lounge on the top floor allow you the best sunrise and sunset view.

From the urban side of Jeongdongjin, the ship looks like it was run ashore. But in reality, it's perched off a high cliff.

Sun Cruise Hotel, Heonhwa-ro, Gangdong-myeon, Gangneung-si, Gangwon-do, South Korea

Cruises to South Korea

On South Korea cruises, you’ll find the perfect mix of natural beauty, edgy urban architecture, and cultural experiences to explore, not to mention an exotic and intriguing cuisine. Visit towering mountains and cascading waterfalls, see cities founded over 1,000 years ago, and explore fascinating holy sites.

On an Asia cruise with Celebrity, stroll along the surf beaches of Jeju Island, surrounded by volcanic rock formations and lush green fields. Discover the majesty and deep history of Buddhist temples in Busan. Embrace the pace of dynamic Seoul, where glassy towers sit alongside high-end design, bustling food markets, and deep-rooted tradition. Make your next vacation one to remember on one of our cruises to South Korea.

South Korea Cruise Highlights

Temples and palaces.

South Korea is home to many palaces and temples that represent various eras and layers of religious and cultural history. Visit the Tongdosa Temple in Busan, built in the 7th century and home to several shrines and relics. Tour the Yakcheonsa Temple on Jeju Island, a sacred Buddist landmark famous for its tiered Chinese-styled roofing and the 18,000 tiny Buddha statues housed in its Dharma hall. In Seoul, explore Gyeongbokgung, a sprawling and dazzlingly ornate royal palace.

Mighty Mountains & Volcanic Islands

South Korea is rich in natural scenery, including green mountains, plunging waterfalls, and ancient volcanoes. Step over the thrilling glass-bottomed Oryukdo Skywalk, which is cantilevered over the cliff for breathtaking views of Oryukdo. From Busan, visit Haedong Yonggungsa Temple, perched on a vast rock that rises from the ocean, and colorful Gamcheon for art and street food. On Jeju Island, hike up volcanic Mount Halla for stupendous views across the countryside.

Beaches & Fishing Villages

South Korea’s coastline is known for its blissful beaches, many lined with buzzing beach bars. The shores of South Korea are also home to sleepy fishing villages and fascinating markets that illustrate how important the sea is to the local economy. Enjoy the beautiful white sand and calm surf at Gwakji Beach on Jeju Island, and learn about the extraordinary local women who free-dive to harvest octopus and abalone. In Busan, meanwhile, soak up the urban vibe of Haeundae Beach.

Featured South Korea Cruise Ports

Sprawling Seoul effortlessly blends glassy skyscrapers and gleaming malls with traditional tea houses, ornate temples, and lavish palaces. The culture here is a curious mix of hipster fashion and buzzing nightlife set against the ancient Confucian culture that embraces politeness and respect for elders. Explore the palaces and taste spicy street foods at the excellent markets. Make time for a day trip to the DMZ, the demilitarized zone on the border with North Korea.

Bustling Busan, South Korea’s second-largest city, fuses cutting-edge architecture with traditional temples, teeming markets, and mountains, forests, and beaches. Visit Jagalchi Fish Market and snack on fresh seafood. Explore Haedong Yonggung temple, suspended over a cliff. Take a trip to the serene Tongdosa Temple, 1,300 years old and housing some of the Buddha’s relics. Brave the Oryukdo Skywalk, a glass-floored bridge that juts out high above the foaming sea.

Jeju Island

South Korea’s largest island is a tropical paradise that blends glorious beaches with towering volcanoes, mysterious caves, and delicious cuisine. Try the grilled abalone, hand-caught by skilled female divers, and the famous barbecued black pork. Visit the ribbon-like cascades of Cheonjeyeon Waterfall and descend into the mysterious lava-tube cave at Manjanggul. Jeju has some enchantingly quirky museums, too, from the Teddy Bear Museum to the O’Sulloc Museum, dedicated entirely to tea drinking.

South Korea Cruise Itineraries

South Korea cruises sail either round-trip from Tokyo (Yokohama), Japan, or one-way between Tokyo and Incheon, the port for Seoul. Either route is the perfect chance to explore the scenic coasts and fascinating cities of Japan and South Korea in depth.

The South Korean shipbuilder said that the dry dock will be capable of building 18,000teu containerships and any other large vessels up to 68m in width.

The fifth Royal Dock is being built at Daehan Shipbuilding (DS) in the South Korean province of South Jeolla to help DSME build larger FPSOs and LNG-FPSOs that require a larger production facility.

Royal Dock-5 will help the company meet its production schedule as well as solve the issue of storage at the building site.

The dry dock is scheduled to be delivered to the Okpo shipyard on December 2012, and will be used to build three LNG carriers starting in February 2013.

The shipbuilder previously commissioned a similar floating dock – DSME Royal Dock-4 – which was used for the construction of large-scale containerships.

The Royal Dock-4 is designed to have a floatage capacity of 120,000t with a length of 438m and width of 84m.

Floating docks allow the shipbuilder to spend less time sinking or buoying the vessel to launch vessels built at the yard.

The dock allows 16 water pumps with the capacity of 4,500m 3 to raise or lower the dock by 21m in three hours.

Bigger floating docks also allow shipbuilders to build ships at a cheaper cost compared with land-based yards.

Earlier this year Oman Drydock (ODC) unveiled a plan to build a floating dock at its ship repair yard at Duqm, Oman.

The panamax-size floating dock will be built by ODC at the Port of Duqm and, when operational, it is expected to surpass the capacity of the Gulf region’s only other floating dock, which is operating in Bahrain.

ODC has a pair of giant graving docks capable of accommodating massive ships, including VLCCs, ULCCs, fourth and fifth-generation containerships, and other vessels with a maximum capacity of 600,000dwt.

The floating dock will cater to smaller domestic tonnage, such as fishing trawlers, government vessels, passenger and cargo ferries, and small to mid-size naval ships.

Port Sokcho cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Sokcho, Korea. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Sokcho is a major port city in South Korea's Gangwon-do Province, with a population around 90,000. The seaport is located on Sea of Japan and in the province's far northeastern corner. Due to its proximity to North Korea, today the city is mainly visited by tourists attracted by the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) - the 1953-established no man's land (length 250 km / 160 mi) that runs across the peninsula to separate North from South Korea. Among Korean tourists, Sokcho is best-known as the gateway to the Seoraksan Maintain (highest elevation point 1708 m / 5604 ft).

The city is also well-known for its numerous food districts. Foodtown is a 2-block restaurant area in downtown dedicated mainly to tourists wishing to sample the local cuisine specialties. Foodtown also has karaoke bars and restaurants with singing rooms. The annual Seorak Cultural Festival (held in October) features live entertainment, street parades, stage shows, fun contests, and races.

Currently, South Korea has 4 cruise ports with all 5 international passenger terminals - one in Sokcho, one in Incheon , one in  Busan , two in Jeju . In 2017, the port upgraded its passenger terminal facilities to handle larger vessels. In September 2018, the cruise port was visited by  Costa Fortuna . In 2019 was planned a call from  Quantum of the Seas  ( Royal Caribbean ), but the visit was later canceled.

On May 11, 2018, Port Sokcho (locode KRSHO) welcomed its ever-largest cruise ship - Costa Serena (LOA length 289 m / 948 ft, max passengers 3600 plus 1100 crew). Pierside celebrations for the maiden call of Costa Serena were attended by the ship's Captain and VIP guests. From Sokcho the ship visited call ports Vladivostok, Muroran, Hakodate, and Busan.

Due to the COVID crisis, Port Sokcho paused its cruise shipping operations for 2 years (February 2020-2022).

Sokcho cruise terminal

Currently, South Korea has all 5 international passenger cruise terminals - one in Sokcho (Port Daepo Harbor), one in Incheon , one in  Busan , two in  Jeju .

Around the cruise port (Daepo Harbour) are located 100+ mini restaurants serving seafood with menus based on the daily catch.

The MV Doulos Hope, a cruise liner turned floating library, will be docked at the Phnom Penh Autonomous Port until July 4. - PPP

PHNOM PENH: The MV Doulos Hope, a floating library operated by OM Ships International, is making its inaugural visit to the Phnom Penh Autonomous Port. The former cruise liner features a collection of thousands of books and has added a selection of Khmer language works for the local community.

This addition aims to make reading more accessible and enjoyable for Cambodian visitors, enriching their literary experience with books in their native language.

Wilma Hildebrand, a staff member from Paraguay who serves aboard the Doulos Hope, shared her excitement about the ship's arrival in Phnom Penh.

“We’ve never visited Phnom Penh before. We have been to Sihanoukville, but coming to Phnom Penh required us to navigate the Mekong River. Our smaller ship gave us the opportunity to make this visit,” she told The Post.

On its June 5 opening day, about 300 visitors came on board to browse, read, and purchase books. Hildebrand emphasised that they do not focus on visitor numbers but cherish each visitor's experience with the international crew and the book fair.

Kok Ros, director of the Department of Books and Reading at the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts, expressed his happiness at the arrival of the vessel and said he had eagerly shared the news with students and reading enthusiasts.

“I have not seen it in person, but I was excited to hear this German-funded floating library had arrived in Phnom Penh. Although there are not many books in Khmer, I believe that young Cambodians can also read English,” he told The Post.

Before docking in Phnom Penh, the Doulos Hope visited Hong Kong. The crew plans to sail to Singapore next.

The ship's mission is to share knowledge, help, and hope, primarily through books and local ministry support.

"'Doulos' means servant in Greek, so we strive to be servants of hope," Hildebrand explained.

The floating book fair will be open at Phnom Penh Autonomous Port from June 5-16 and June 22 to July 4.

Visitors can explore the fair from Tuesday to Sunday between 12.30pm and 7.30pm.

Besides purchasing devotional literature, self-help, and children’s books – priced mostly between 10,000 and 20,000 riel – visitors can enjoy coffee at the Second Dock Cafe aboard the ship, while taking in scenic views of the Tonle Sap River and the bustling Chhroy Changvar Bridge.

Entrance is free, ensuring the literary event is accessible for all.

A former cruise ship, the MV Doulos Hope sails around South-East Asia promoting literacy and education.

Since its launch in May 2023, it has visited several countries, drawing nearly 120,000 visitors and selling around 150,000 books.

The ship's international crew of over 50 nationalities seek to foster cultural exchanges and engage in local initiatives to support literacy and social consciousness. - The Phnom Penh Post/ANN

Tragic Capsizing: Overloaded North Korean Troop Vessel Sinks, Killing Dozens

I n a sobering maritime incident, a North Korean transport vessel carrying soldiers capsized last month, resulting in the deaths of approximately 90 of the 130 personnel onboard. The tragedy unfolded on a river in Gangwon Province, where the vessel, described as “very large” by Seoul-based TV Chosun, sank due to being overloaded. The troops were being ferried to a border project aimed at fortifying the country’s eastern region.

Seoul’s intelligence sources have reported widespread concern among North Korean military ranks following the incident, which has gone unacknowledged by Pyongyang publicly. The disaster’s occurrence has brought to light the regime’s coping strategies, which often involve provoking external conflict to divert attention and unify the country internally. Park Won-gon, a professor of North Korean studies at Ewha University, explained, “Even if you try to hide it, it will eventually become known. In that situation, one of the things North Korea usually does is provoke foreign conflict to unite within.”

TV Chosun, which has previously reported reliably on intelligence that was later corroborated by the South Korean government, has also linked the sinking’s aftermath to Pyongyang’s recent provocations, including missile launches and GPS jamming activities.

North Korea’s Defense Minister, Kang Sun Nam, visited the accident site and has called for stricter safety standards, but this appears to have done little to quell military discontent. The incident is part of a larger pattern of maritime challenges faced by North Korea, attributed partly to an aging fleet and Western sanctions that have limited access to parts and maintenance. These challenges were illustrated previously in 2021 when the North Korean cargo ship Cheongbong sank off Shimane, Japan, though all workers were rescued by a passing North Korean tanker.

The order to mobilize up to 1,000 troops per day to the border fortification project began in mid-January following a national address by North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, where he identified South Korea as the regime’s “principal enemy.” This level of mobilization and the resulting accident highlight the strains on North Korea’s military infrastructure and the potential for further incidents.

Similarly, there has been no confirmation of the incident from independent sources. This lack of transparency is characteristic of North Korea, which historically has rarely acknowledged maritime incidents involving its military personnel.

The recent capsizing and the military’s response to it add another layer to the already complex security dynamics on the Korean Peninsula. With South Korean authorities suggesting that North Korea may be attempting to divert attention from the disaster by escalating tensions, the implications for regional stability are profound.
