Why Visit Mersea Island?

England, Essex, Me on Mersea

So if I haven’t already spelled it out in the intro, Mersea Island is the ideal break for those looking for an easy and stress-free seaside escape from London.

Just a few hours’ drive away, you can be relaxing on the beautiful sandy shores of Essex in no time from the capital, eating delicious fresh seafood and raising a glass in your beachside accommodation to a setting sun over a sandy shore.

That’s right, a sandy shore! And lots of it!

Because, being an island, Mersea has plenty of beautiful coastal spaces perfect for strolling, sitting, sunbathing, paddling and tootling along.

The island is small and feels wonderfully safe, so spending a day or 2 here is the perfect way to unwind and relax – miles away from the hectic urban pace of life.

Where is Mersea Island?

England, Essex, The Strood

So, as I’ve mentioned a few times, Mersea Island is in the county of Essex, which sits in the east of England, on the outskirts of London.

Under 10 miles from the Essex city Colchester, Mersea Island sits off the southern edge of the coastline here.

And island is the key word here, as there’s just one road in and out of Mersea, which is called The Strood.

About once a month – when there are large, spring tides – The Strood can actually get covered by the tide, meaning access both to and from the island is restricted.

This is why it’s crucial you always check the tide timetables before you make your journey to Mersea!

A good measure, in addition to doing this, is learn if the tide is at 4.5m or higher that day – if so it will probably cover The Strood.

In this case, you need to leave 1.5 hours either side of high tide to travel onto or off the island.

Cars do regularly have to be rescued, so please pay attention to this!

How to Get There?

England, Essex, Colchester

Taking under 2 hours by car to reach the island, the most common route to Mersea Island from London is to follow the A12 past Chelmsford, then exit at junction 26 and head along the B1025 past Tiptree.

This is a beautiful little drive – once you turn off the highway – as you pass through the gorgeous Essex countryside and some lovely quaint villages.

Driving really is the best and easiest way to get to Mersea Island, as it will offer you the most flexibility, especially if you want to explore other parts of the county at the same time.

If you don’t have your own vehicle, then check out Discover Cars who offer a great range of rental vehicle at some great prices.

Alternatively, if you can’t or don’t want to drive, then you can get to Mersea Island using public transport and taxi or bus.

Trains to Colchester leave from London Liverpool Street and the taxi ride from the Colchester station to Mersea Island takes around 20 minutes.

As always, I use Trainline to search and book trains across the UK, as they offer great comparison options and some of the best rates around.

From Colchester, the quickest way to the island is to pay for a short taxi ride which costs about £15-20.

Otherwise, it is a lot cheaper to get a train from Liverpool Street to Colchester Town, which is about a 100m walk from Colchester bus station.

From here there are hourly buses (even on Sundays), which take an hour to reach Mersea Island.

Tickets cost £2-3, but on high tides, the buses only run as far as Peldon, so do check timetables here .

When to Visit & How Long For?

England, Essex, East Mersea

There’s no question the best time of year to visit Mersea Island is during the summer months of May through September.

This is when the UK has its best weather and you’re able to enjoy the stunning coastline here to the max.

If it’s the beach you’re after when you come to Mersea – and why wouldn’t you be?! – then it’s definitely the warmer and drier months of the year that you want to be here!

It goes without saying these are also the busiest times of the year, especially the weekends and school holidays, so if you’re trying to balance the good weather with less people, opt for week-day stays that are outside the peak school holidays.

And when it comes to how long to spend on Mersea Island – a day trip is certainly better than nothing and will give you a great city escape.

However if you can spend more time than a couple of nights away from home, then Mersea will make for a great relaxing break.

Or you can create your own Essex explorer weekend with 1 night on Mersea Island and another elsewhere in the county to make a good getaway of it.

Top Things to Do on Mersea Island

UK, Essex, Mersea Island

So there’s no question that a lot of the top things to do in Mersea include relaxing and hanging out at the beach!

But there’s also more than enough to do elsewhere on the island too.

From watersports and boating to golfing and eating, there’s plenty of treats on offer.

Skip to the eating and drinking section of this article to get the lowdown on the best places to enjoy the culinary delights of the island; otherwise, you’ll want to head to West Mersea – which is the main town on the island – for most of the other activities on this list.

Mersea Island Watersports are open year round and offer lessons and equipment hire for SUP, kayaking, windsurfing, wind-foiling and sailing.

They are based in West Mersea and you can book any of their activities online here .

Lady Grace Essex Boat Trips also operate out of West Mersea.

A family business, they offer personal boat tours around the harbour of the island to 1 hour creek tours (with the chance to see seals!) and even 3 hour return pub lunch tours.

And finally in West Mersea, you’ll also find the Mercea Island Museum .

An independent museum established in 1976, they’re open 2pm  -5pm in the summer months (1st May to 29th Sept) and adults entrance costs £2. Children are free.

This place is well worth a visit, along with the cute local church that sits next to it!

Across on East Mersea, you can’t miss out the wonderful Cudmore Grove Country Park , which allows for some beautiful coastal walking across 102 unique coastal landscape, as well as some stellar views across the River Colne to Brightingsea Harbour.

There’s also a kids play area here, bird hide and beach access.

The park is open every day from 8am to dusk and parking fees apply. Learn more here .

And, in between, as you make your way from West to East, or visa versa, don’t miss a stop at the Mersea Vineyards , where 4 grapes create lovely English wines for you to sample and enjoy!

They also have an onsite brewery, cafe and small guesthouse.

Mersea Island Beach

England, Essex, Shells

And of course, who could forget one of the best things to do on Mersea Island is hit the beach!

The main beach in Mersea Island is situated near West Mersea, which is the main town area too.

Victoria Esplanade runs the length of the coast here and begins from the West Mersea Marina before covering West Mersea Beach, Seaview and along to Waldegraves Holiday Park.

This is the sandiest prettiest stretch of the coast on the island and is the spot to snap the coloured beach houses, which are the most famous icons of the island.

If you want your Instagram shots, this is where to head!

Keep walking past the row of coloured beach huts, to the end of the bay, if you want the quietest spots – here a short path can take you to the top of a small lookout area too.

Mersea Island Camping & Caravan Parks

England, Essex, Mersea Island Beach Hut

Below is a full list of all the options currently available on the island, most of which offer a range of camping, caravan spots and some glamping facilities too.

They are spread out across the west and east of the island, with almost all of them located extremely close to the beach – just what you want!

Best Places to Eat & Drink

England, Whitstable, Oysters

No question Mersea Island is famous for its seafood and here’s my pick of the best places to enjoy it (and a good drink) on the island…

  • The Company Shed – the flagship seafood spot that is as wonderfully quirky as bring your own bread and beer sounds! Make sure you book in advance.
  • The Artcafé – the best place for coffee on the island, this cute and character-filled café in West Mersea is a must if you need your cake or caffeine fix
  • The Mercea Barn – a spot that’s great to stop at if you’re travelling between West and East Mersea, the Barn is a lovely coffee joint come souvenir shop where you can sit outside in the countryside sunshine. There are vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options and they have Oatly mylk!
  • Mersea Island Vineyard Tea Room – I mentioned it on my list of things to do in Mersea Island, but the vineyards is also worth a stop if you feel like a good afternoon tea in gorgeous vintage surrounds. You can also try the wines and wonderful stouts they produce here too of course!

Things to Know Before You Go

England, Essex, East Mersea Island

Most parking on Mersea Island is paid.

Download the MiPermit app for the best and easiest way to pay for your vehicle at the beach car parks etc

Please remember to always pick up your litter – there are recycling and regular waste bins dotted across the island

West Mersea has a range of shops, including some small supermarkets, bakers and a butchers if you need to buy any produce

Phone signal across the island is good, so need to worry here!

Mersea Island has some great public toilets – probably some of the best I’ve seen in the UK! Go Essex!

Where to Travel After Mersea Island?

England, Essex, Chappel Viaduct

If you’re making Mersea Island a stop on a longer Essex tour, then the nearby city of Colchester – the oldest city in England, and former capital of Roman Britain – is a great stop to include nearby as well.

Don’t miss the Colchester Zoo and Castle either.

The wonderful Chappel Viaduct is another great option – this is one the largest brick structures in the UK (it’s Grade II listed) and you can get some cool shots here!

Dedham Vale is an Area of Outstanding National Beauty in Essex that is well worth visiting for a country ramble and is known as Constable Country thanks to the paintings it inspired at the hand of this famous artist.

Saffron Walden – a historic and picturesque Medieval market town – is a must too, otherwise other coastal spots such as Clacton-on-Sea and Walton-on-the-Naze are definitely worth a visit as well.

Other Mercea Island Travel Tips

5 Packing Essentials for Mersea Island

#1 Walking Shoes – You can’t come to Mersea and not enjoy some walks along the island for gulps of bracing sea air. So walking shoes are a must have! I highly recommend these lightweight and comfortable ones from North Face , which are perfect for the job.

#2 Waterproof, Windproof Jacket – Look, as paradisicial as I’ve made Mersea sound (and it is), it also is Essex! As such, you should be prepared for rain at any time of the year. So bring a good waterproof and windproof jacket no matter when you’re visiting.

#3 Swimwear & Towel – You can’t come to the wonderful coastline of Mersea and not bring swimwear. Swimwear and a sand-free beach towel !

#4 Camera – Having an excellent camera to snap Mersea Island in all her glory and preserve the memories is an absolute given if you’re travelling done this way. I love my Sony A6000 , which never leaves my side on travel adventures. I also enjoyed having a GoPro when I was here to capture all the water action.

#5 Portable Charger – There’s no denying, power can be an issue down in Mersea, especially if you’re camping. Even if you have a powered site, remembering to charge stuff up, leaving it out overnight, or during the day, and constantly rotating electronics can be tiresome. My solution: Come armed with 2 fully charged Anker portable chargers , so you can fire up your phone, camera or other devices whenever and wherever you need.

An excellent article highlighting the best of Mersea!

My experience of living nearby is that the Strood generally covers over 5m, not 4.5m, but this does generally happen more than once a month, and all year round, not just spring.

While on Mersea, you also have to paddle board. Tollesbury, the location of the HIKS paddleboard factory, is close by, and due to the island having very low waves on account of being in the Blackwater Estuary, it is the perfect place to learn (I did).

Ensure to book at the Company Shed, as they only do bookings. It’s worth it though!

Thank you so much for the wonderfully helpful, local knowledge! Can’t wait to return to your home island soon! Thanks and best wishes, Steph 🙂

Ultimate Games S.A. has revealed Essex: The Whale Hunter, a whaling simulator inspired by “ Moby-Dick” . According to the creators, the new title will offer a high seas adventure filled with emotions and realism. The game will take place in the 19th century, on the island of Nantucket and the Atlantic Ocean. The release date is set to 2023. Essex: The Whale Hunter will appear on PC, as well as consoles: PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch.

The game is being developed by the Polish studio 3T Games and will be published by Ultimate Games S.A. It is yet another collaboration between the companies (following the previously-announced Smuggler Simulator).

Essex: The Whale Hunter is a single-player focused whaling simulator that will allow you to embark on a great adventure in the open waters of the Atlantic. The player will step into the shoes of a whaling ship captain, and the gameplay will feature various elements related to whale hunting, including the majestic and awe-inspiring cachalots.

The new project by 3T Games and Ultimate Games S.A. is one of the very few games that directly refer to the classics of American literature. The creators explain that their goal is to combine the fascinating world depicted by Herman Melville in “ Moby-Dick” with attractive and varied gameplay.

“ In Essex: The Whale Hunter, players will embark on a unique journey through a world that no longer exists. The bulk of the action will take place on the Atlantic, but we will also visit the island of Nantucket, which could be described as the Wall Street of 19th-century whaling. Herman Melville’s masterpiece serves as our main inspiration during development, and we’re striving to properly capture the unique nature of this multi-dimensional novel ” – said Rafał Jelonek, CEO at 3T Games.

Players will have to face many challenges and start with the very basics, such as recruiting the optimal crew. Proper maintenance of the ship will play a crucial role. While the game will, naturally, focus on the search and hunt for whales, it will also include economic elements and allow you to trade the gathered resources.

As the creators emphasise, more details will be revealed at a later time.

Essex: The Whale Hunter – main features:

play a whaling simulator inspired by Herman Melville’s “Moby-Dick”;

hunt for cachalots and other whales;

choose and manage your crew;

maintain a whaling ship;

harvest and trade resources;

explore the island of Nantucket and the Atlantic Ocean.

The launch of Essex: The Whale Hunter is scheduled for 2023. The game will be released for PC (Steam) and consoles: PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch.

The 18 best Essex seasides where you can avoid the crowds this Bank Holiday

Jaywick may have a bad name but it's beaches are second to none

Ask anyone to name a seaside resort in Essex and Southend or Clacton are bound to crop up.

But there is more than 350 miles of Essex coastline and so many more beautiful beaches to choose from - so why not venture elsewhere?

We can understand why Southend and Clacton are the go-to beaches - there's plenty to do and there's entertainment for all the family.

But there are other Essex beaches that some may say are just as good - and maybe better if you're looking to avoid the crowds.

A trip to Southend in summer is guaranteed to be stressful, with or without kids. The parking, for one, can be a nightmare and then comes the challenge of finding a spot on the beach where you don't feel as if you are sitting on top of another family.

So, we at Essex Live have compiled a list of alternative beaches, where you won't have to sit in miles of traffic, queue for half an hour just to get a parking space or wait in line for ages for an ice cream.

From the Thames Estuary up to the shipping port of Harwich - here are 18 Essex beaches you can visit and be sure to avoid the crowds this Bank Holiday.

Earlham's Beach

The small beach is made up of sand and stones

This little-known beach is located in a quaint spot on Essex's north-east coast where you’re pretty much guaranteed peace and quiet.

Earlham’s Beach is surrounded by marshland, sand dunes and a lovely coastal walk.

It's a little known secret, but walk along the path from Dovercourt west- end, past the caravan park and you'll find Earlhams beach.

Not good for swimming, but where marshland reaches the sea and perfect for mud-larking and wildlife. Just be mindful of the tides.

To find out more about Earlham beach click here.

Osea Island

essex luxury sea tours game

Osea Island, located in the estuary of the River Blackwater off the coast of Heybridge Basin and Goldhanger, has a variety of accommodation surrounded by almost 400 acres of rustic gardens, orchards, meadows and salt marshes.

The Island has four and a half miles of secluded coastline.

To find out more about the Essex Island, click here.

Leigh-on-Sea

Leigh's Bell Wharf beach is one of the two beaches in Essex deemed unsafe to swim in

If you're into your photography, Leigh-on-Sea is the perfect place to take pictures of boats.

The best views are at Leigh Cliffs East where you can gaze out over the River Thames, which is absolutely stunning on a summer's evening (if you block out the factories in Kent across the water).

There's a spit of beach on the seafront, and a paddling pool for kiddies, but other places on this list have better beach offerings.

Instead, wander the olde worlde fishing village type streets, pottering in and out of pubs, tea rooms and gift shops. If you find yourself further inland, stop off at  Poco Gelato  for some ice cream.

essex luxury sea tours game

Sandwiched between Leigh-on-Sea and Southend, Chalkwell is lesser-known and more residential, so has less in the way of entertainment.

Chalkwell has a wide pedestrian esplanade running parallel to it's beach which is lined with the fibreglass changing huts.

Bring your sturdy shoes to go hunting for crabs in the mudflats at low tide, or head to one of the cafés and wait for the water to return, before laying your towel out on the sand.

Best of all, Chalkwell station is practically on the beach, making for an easy journey from Fenchurch Street.

Walton-on-the-Naze

The Naze beach

Unique because it's surrounded on three sides by the sea – the mostly sandy beaches and steadfast sea defence, make the Naze beach perfect for walking and discovering - wait for it - fossils and shark's teeth dating back to the Ice Age! (It is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI)).

Also great for lovers of marine activities such as sailing, kayaking and kite-surfing, and you couldn't possibly leave without visiting the Essex Wildlife Trust Centre, walking to the top of The Naze Tower, or taking a wildlife trip to see the seals in the Walton backwaters.

Frinton-on-Sea

Frinton's beach

Frinton is probably the most untouched beach you will find and it has been rewarded for its outstanding cleanliness with a Blue Flag award.

The beach is divided up by a series of timber groynes. To the rear of the beach is an extensive promenade, much of which is lined with colourful, old-fashioned beach huts. There is also an extensive grassy area, the Greensward, which is an ideal spot for a picnic.

Dovercourt Bay

The county's northernmost beach near Harwich, and is only a short walk or drive from the Station and Harwich town centre and pier.

Dovercourt Bay is a tranquil seaside resort, with sand and shingle beaches, near the historic town of Harwich.

The beach has plenty of facilities on the promenade, including a skate park and a boating lake. Within easy reach of Hemford Water National Nature Reserve, known for its resident seals.

Jaywick Beach

Jaywick may have a bad name but it's beaches are second to none.

The sandy beach of Jaywick lies around mid-way between Clacton-on-Sea and Colne Point. Whilst not quiet by any stretch of the imagination it is never as busy as Clacton.

Facilities at Jaywick are fairly limited but there is a car park on Tamarisk Way and public toilets can be found at either end. There is also a narrow, walled promenade, popular with dog walkers to the rear of the beach.

Wrabness beach

Wrabness, is a tiny, sleepy village which sits on the coast between Manningtree and Harwich.

Next to the train station, you can take a walk along the footpath which will bring you to 'Julie's House for Essex', designed by Essex's famous celebrity artist and sculpturer Grayson Perry.

The views across to Wrabness beach and marshland are stunning. It is a haven for artists, nature lovers and sailors, and the perfect place for a romantic picnic for two!

Holland-on-Sea

Four miles up the coast from Clacton lies Holland-on-Sea- a much less developed part of the coast.

It offers a quieter spot to get away from the crowds at Clacton.

This is a good place for long walks along the coast, where there is a chance of spotting a variety of migrant birds.

Brightlingsea

Brightlingsea beach

Brightlingsea is a small Cinque port, seven miles from Colchester at the mouth of the River Colne.

Perfect for families, it has a tidal 'paddling' pool for the little ones and is a popular spot for crabbing.

Ideal conditions make it suitable for sailing as well – keeping everyone happy!

The beautiful sunsets found here and many brightly coloured beach huts, make it an ideal location for photography too.

East Mersea

Mersea Island (approached by a causeway from the mainland, and cut-off at high tide) has an East and West – both worthy of a visit.

East Mersea is also the home of Cudmore Grove Nature Reserve, and as well as wildlife and beautiful walks along the sea wall, a regular ferry during the Summer time carries passengers to and from Brightlingsea.

The beach is sand and pebble, but go there during the week, or out of season and you're likely to be the only one there - bliss!

Monkey Beach – West Mersea

Monkey Beach West Mersea

'Monkey Beach' is a small area of beach in West Mersea.

On one side, moored on the mudflats, are the beautiful, weather-beaten house boats.

Whilst on the other, small causeways amongst marshland, with which to access it by.

A short walk away will take you to the Company Shed and Oyster Bar where you can indulge in native Mersea oysters and fresh fish caught that morning. Visit on a Tuesday or Thursday afternoon and you can buy the 'fresh catch' direct from the Fishermen!

Bradwell-on-Sea

Bradwell beach

Although Bradwell can be seen from Mersea Island, it is in fact nearly an hour's drive away where the River Blackwater meets the North Sea.

Bathed in part by cockle shells, it is a very lonely shoreline and saltmarsh.

In 653 AD, Saint Cedd was sent by Pope Gregory to found a monastery, and bring Christianity to Essex.

The building has survived as the old chapel of St Peter-on-the-Wall, and is one of the oldest and most atmospheric churches in England, warranting a 'must see' whilst in this area.

You can also walk along the sea wall to Burnham-on-Crouch, once a centre for cockle, whelk and oyster trade, now famed for sailing activities.

Burnham-on-Crouch

Burnham has a small sandy beach on the River Crouch at the Riverside Park.

Due to the strong River the strong currents in this area make this unadvisable so the beach is best used for sunbathing or paddling.

Unfortunately dogs are not allowed onto the beach.

There are other small areas of sandy and shell beaches on the banks of the River Crouch, towards the estuary, and on the sea coast. These are accessed on foot or by private farm tracks. None of these are accessible by public roads.

Shoeburyness

The sea is beautifully calm on a quiet day

Despite Shoeburyness being so close to Southend, the two are a world apart.

The Shoeburyness beach is sand and shingle, with a promenade backdrop and lovely beach huts.

Just along the prom, Uncle Tom's Café provides the ice cream and as many bucket and spades as you need!

It's a popular spot for kite-surfing and sailing.

Look at that blue sky

A pebble and sand, quiet beach, and because of the tide, perfect for sunbathing, sailing and paddle boarding. It's popular with families, but not at all crowded, even in in the summer season.

Also beautiful for sunset 'spotting' – so don't forget your camera.

It if the perfect place to cycle, walk or run over-looking the sea five kilometres one way, and two kilometres the other.

Canvey Island – Thorney Bay

Canvey Island – Thorney Bay

Thorney Bay is any dog walkers paradise.

It's a small sheltered beach on Canvey Island, and is a wonderful place to sit and watch the World go by, and all the ships going up and down the Thames.

On a clear, sunny day there are also great views across to the Kent coast.

essex luxury sea tours game

We love hearing from guests about their time in Russia and one comment often hear is how surprised people are by the Russian capital. We can’t say for certain what people expected but we do know that it’s always far removed from what they imagined! It’s been called a modern metropolis, a cosmopolitan city, an historic gem, an architectural treasure and a cultural powerhouse, among other descriptions. Majestic Moscow has always surprised our guests and left them with lasting and fond memories.

Russia’s famous Golden Ring is an archipelago of historic towns surrounding Moscow. Uglich is one of the oldest and was founded under Igor, the last Varangian prince. It once resisted the Mongol invasion and its ancient walls saw the grisly murder of young Dmitri, son of Ivan the Terrible. The impressive Church of St. Dmitri on the Blood, with its classic onion domes and blood red walls, is a fine example of classic Russian architecture. The tour ends with an enchanting choral concert.

This, the oldest city on the Volga River, and now a UNESCO World Heritage site, boasts a wealth of ancient orthodox treasures. The impressive Transfiguration of the Savior, adorned with murals depicting St. John’s apocalyptic visions can be seen in the Spassky Monastery. The Church of St. Elijah the Prophet is decorated with an awe-inspiring selection of rich frescoes. For a real taste of pre-revolutionary Russia, visitors are entertained by a costumed reception at the Governor’s House.

Close to the shores of White Lake once were the ‘tsar’s fishing grounds’. It lies in a place so serene that ancient monks chose to build no fewer than three holy sites here, including the Ferapontov Monastery. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, its chapels boast magnificent frescoes by Dionysius, one of Russia’s most renowned icon painters. The Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery was a refuge for many nobles during tumultuous times and later a fortress that successfully repelled invading armies.

The Karelia region is a vast and naturally beautiful wilderness that spreads all the way from St. Petersburg to the Arctic Circle. The glorious island village of Kizhi consists almost entirely of the traditionally styled wooden buildings of ‘Old Russia’. Among them is the famous Transfiguration Church built in 1714. Remarkably, and in testament to the craftsmen of the time, not a single nail was used in its construction! Kizhi is one of the favorite stops on the river cruise to St. Petersburg.

A typical rural hamlet brought to life by warm and welcoming villagers. Volga Dream guests are invited into local homes to enjoy classic Russian fare, tea with jam and ‘pirozhki’ (pies). Enthusiastic hosts share Russian traditions and the appeal of village life while proudly showing off their scrupulously kept homes and kitchen gardens. The tour continues with a brief bus ride to see a unique World War II memorial and then, for a real glimpse of Russian life, a visit to a local primary school.

Nizhny Novgorod

This was once a wealthy city thanks to its proximity to rich eastern trading routes. During the Soviet era, the city was closed to outsiders because of its military importance. It’s also where many political prisoners were sent to live out their days in exile. The 16th-century Kremlin ramparts offer spectacular views and the city is known for its elaborately decorated churches. For Volga Dream cruise guests, the highlight of the day is an evening folk concert performed by local children.

Sailing along the Volga river, the riverbank gradually ceases to be dominated by Orthodox churches. Instead, beautiful mosques appear as the river crosses into Tatarstan where the first stop is scenic Kazan, the region’s capital. Inside the white walls of the citadel, the famous Kul Sharif mosque and the old Cathedral of Peter and Paul stand side-by-side symbolizing the two faiths’ long and peaceful coexistence in the region. A concert of traditional Tatar music ends the Volga Dream tour in Kazan.

Passing the Zhigulevskie Mountains offers wonderful views from the sundeck before touring the city. One of the key attractions is the fascinating Space Museum, which offers a revealing glimpse of how the Soviet Union pursued its ambitious journey to the cosmos. The town is also noted for its beautiful esplanade, perfect for a relaxed stroll beside the Volga river. This in turn leads to the Samara State Art Museum. Founded in 1897, it is home to a collection of more than 16,000 works of art.

This city is best known for its close associations with cosmonaut, Yuri Gagarin. The Russian hero who achieved worldwide fame as the first man in space lived and studied here. Saratov used to be home to a large German community, a heritage that can still be seen in the local architecture. The Volga Dream tour visits the Radishchev State Art Museum, the first picture gallery in Russia outside Moscow and St. Petersburg.

Originally called Tsaritsyn, the city was renamed Stalingrad from 1925 to 1961 in honor of the USSR’s leader. During World War II, the city’s residents put up a heroic defense, repelling an advancing Nazi invasion. The battle for Stalingrad has gone down in history as a pivotal moment in the bloody conflict on the eastern front. The most ferocious and deadly fighting took place on Mamayev Hill, where an imposing memorial now stands close to the excellent Battle of Stalingrad Panorama Museum.

Saint Petersburg

If Moscow surprises, then St Petersburg delights. Peter the Great founded the city to showcase Russia’s newfound enlightenment. He wanted to show the modern world a cultured and advanced society. In short, he built the city to impress and in that he succeeded splendidly! The striking buildings were designed by some of the finest architects Europe had to offer and even now, the ‘Venice of the North’ never fails to enchant with its spectacular buildings and impressive canal network. It is a city of true grandeur.

Cocktails with the Captain

Commanding any ship is a complex role that calls for a long list of skills. Captains know their vessels inside out as well as well as the routes they sail and when things don’t go to plan, they have to make instant decisions. Above all though, the most important part of the job, underpinning everything they do, is to keep the ship and everyone aboard safe. The Captain’s cocktail party is a great and a wonderful opportunity for passengers and crew to get acquainted as the gets underway.

Matryoshka doll painting

There is nothing more typically Russian than a Matryoshka. It embodies the fact that there’s always something deeper to be found in every aspect of Russian life. Learning the traditional designs and techniques used to decorate these iconic dolls offers a pleasant diversion and some cathartic creativity!

Choose either a sumptuous buffet or set menu for lunch while dinner is always four or five courses with full service. High praise for the exquisite quality of meals is yet another constantly recurring feature in feedback from our guests.

Meet the Professor

From the Mongol hordes to Soviet times, Russia’s history is, like all of Europe’s, a complex web of political intrigue, war and peace, trade and treaties, as well as heroes and villains. Academics devote whole lifetimes to studying Russia’s long past and one of them presents a series of lectures shedding light on everything from Gorbachev to Chekhov, Khrushchev to Ivan the Terrible and of course, contemporary Russia. Our Professor is on board throughout the river cruise for informal conversation.

Beginner’s Russian

The Russian language can be rather beautiful and poetic and we know that many seasoned travelers enjoy trying their hand at different languages. Our onboard teachers provide an introduction to the riches of Russian, so guests can try out a few useful words and phrases on real Russians during the exciting river tours from Moscow to St. Petersburg or from Moscow to Volgograd!

Russian tea tasting

The drink we tend to associate with Russia is vodka, but tea, in fact, is the much more universal beverage of choice throughout the country. Guests will get acquainted with the Russian tea etiquette, a fundamental component of the country's social culture, and enjoy the traditional tea ceremony while cruising from St. Petersburg to Moscow or taking a Grand Volga river tour.

Russian Dinner & Vodka Tasting

All our dining is international but for Russian Dining night, the Chef includes a selection of traditional Russian dishes: Chicken Kiev, Kulebyaka and no Russian table is complete without Borsch. To add to the ‘Taste of Russia’ optional Russian dress, or at least a touch of Russian style, is provided along with enthusiastic help from our staff!

Russian Cooking Class

A plate of pelmeni might not look like much to the untrained eye, but it forms the heart of Russian cuisine and culture. Basically, it's a type of dumpling: small portions of meat and onion wrapped in a thin sheet of unleavened dough and boiled, a little like ravioli. Guests can join a Russian cooking class onboard the MS Volga Dream to learn how to cook this delicious Russian dish.

Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov Piano Recital

Some of the greatest classical music ever written comes from Russia. It’s hard to imagine a more fitting stage for a virtuoso solo recital by our resident concert pianist than the mighty Volga or a better backdrop than the heart of Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov’s own serene homeland.
