Online Resources for Planning a Trip to Every Baseball Stadium

Heather

When Brad and I first started thinking about this trip, we started our planning with a web search to see what existing online resources we could find. Unfortunately, we didn’t find as many as we would have hoped. That’s why we decided to launch this blog.

I started by searching for help with route planning. Specifically, I wanted to learn how to optimize the travel schedule, how to make the best of each ballpark, places to stay, and how to get to and from the ballparks. This blog post provides links to the online resources we found most useful.

Online Resources for Planning a Baseball Fan Grand Slam

There are quite a few online resources about visiting individual ballparks, but few that discuss the unique challenges of visiting all 30 in one season. These are the resources we did find:

How to Visit All 30 major League Ballparks on a Budget

This blog post is published by a company that educates readers about the stadium and seats before they purchase. They also sell tickets. Here’s what I found useful:

  • Purchase tickets two days before the game to save 30%.
  • A link to print the schedule for use in planning.
  • Group ballparks that are close to one another (they suggest 9 groupings).
  • Make arrangements for accommodations ahead of time.
  • Use public transportation to and from the games rather than parking at the ballpark.

How Can You Visit All 30 Baseball Stadiums in a Season

This post is part of HowStuffWorks.com. Here’s what I found useful:

  • References to two planning site: Baseball Road Trip Planner at baseball-roadrip.com.
  • Rent a hybrid vehicle and try camping instead of hotels to save money.
  • Have a backup plan for rainouts.
  • Call ahead to team customer service departments to let them know what you are doing.
  • The Baseball Road Trip app has information about ticket offices, fun facts, and points on hotel and dining options.

Take Me Out to the Ballpark – All of Them

This article in Slate talks about two friends’ quest to visit all 30 major league stadiums in a 30-day road trip. (It took 34.) What I found useful:

  • Link to the Harvard Sports Analysis article on The Shortest Possible Baseball Road Trip . This included formulas for Ben Blatt’s travelling salesman model. This was the same approach my husband was taking. He found his approach helpful in constructing his own model.
  • Allow four hours per game.
  • Make sure to pad drive times to allow for rest stops and manageable drive times.
  • Don’t fool yourself that this will allow you to see the USA! You’ll be doing lots of driving, without much sightseeing other than the ballparks.

How to Plan a MLB Road Trip: 30 Parks, One Summer

This article in the Art of Manliness blog was the one that gave my son and I the idea to host our Home Runs for Housing fundraiser. Here’s what else I found useful:

  • Go with a good friend who will still like you after the trip!
  • Don’t rush too much!
  • Plan to be at the park an hour before game time.
  • Make a trip to the upper deck, right behind home plate, for a panorama-style picture of the stadium.
  • Collect a souvenir in every stadium.
  • Create a system to rate the stadiums.

General Baseball Travel Planning Resources

There are more online resources that provide information for individual ballparks. I also found one blog that includes tips for road trip planning in addition to information on the stadiums.

Baseball Road Trip Guide – How to Plan a Baseball Trip Without Hassle .

This blog is part of ballparksavvy.com, a website dedicated to helping fans cut corners to save money on things like tickets, food and parking, and discover free or can’t miss experiences. Here’s what I found useful:

  • You can save money by purchasing tickets at the last minute. However, buying in advance provides peace of mind.
  • Stubhub , ScoreBig , and the MLB box offices were his top recommendations for ticket purchases.
  • Ideas on how to preserve memories of the trip, including a ticket stub book.
  • The website has a page for every ballpark that shows things you shouldn’t miss, ways to save money, and where to find parking, tickets, and food!

Route Planning Tools and Advice

One of the most time consuming challenges of putting together this trip is figuring out the route. I was hoping to find someone who had an online resource that calculated the optimal route for all 30 stadiums. While we didn’t find what we were looking for, we did find some helpful tools.

The Traveling Salesman Problem: 30 MLB Stadiums in Record Tim e . This article was written by someone who completed a road trip of all 30 stadiums in 26 days. It illustrates the difference between the optimal route based on distances, which he provides, and the route he took to minimize the time to visit all stadiums. The distance-optimized route is 9,380.1 miles. The time optimized route for his 2008 schedule was 14,212 miles.

Baseball-Roadrip.com . This has a road trip planner that allows you to see up to 20 games. Unfortunately, if you are planning a trip to all 30, it isn’t as useful.

Baseball Road Trip Planner 2023 . This also offers a road trip planner. Unfortunately, I had a hard time making the calculations work!

Visiting all 30 Major League Baseball Stadiums – with Python and SAS Viya . This is part of the SAS blogs, and it contains a lot of information about building a travelling salesman formula to optimize the trip.

I’ll continue to edit this blog post as we find additional online resources. So, if you spot something I haven’t seen, be sure to put it in the comments so that I can check it out!

Planning The Ultimate Baseball Road Trip

Fans at a baseball stadium at night with the field illuminated, and the words "Guide to Planning the Ultimate Baseball Road Trip"

In honor of Opening Day...AND our brand-new MLB Baseball Collection , we're celebrating two beloved All-American pastimes: baseball and road trips .

The classic baseball road trip is a tale almost as old as the sport itself. In fact, there are even official names for its enthusiasts: stadium hunters and ballpark chasers , for example.

Whether you yourself have chased a ballpark or two or you're just hearing about this whole MLB stadium road trip thing for the first time, let's get into it!

Tips for Planning a Baseball Road Trip

One of the best things about planning a baseball road trip is that there's really no wrong way to do it. There are multiple strategies for how to plan your route and itinerary, depending on your individual preferences and how much time you have.

For example, you may want   to visit as many stadiums as possible or see  as many  games  as possible. Or, you can follow a specific team around for awhile, cheering them on in different cities.

The main thing to keep in mind for an MLB stadium road trip is that scheduling is super important. If you want to visit a certain stadium, the home team needs to actually be in town, hosting an opponent. And if you plan to visit multiple stadiums, ideally, all those teams will be playing at home around the same time.

Wondering how the heck you're supposed to know who's playing where and when? We're glad you asked.

Allow us to introduce you to an amazing, easy-to-use tool, cleverly called   The Baseball Road Trip Planner .

This handy tool lets you select all the teams you want to see (including minor league teams!) and customize the length of your trip and specific days for games. It even suggests in what order you should visit the stadiums! Once you customize your options, the baseball road trip planner gives you sets of dates throughout the season when it's actually possible.

Ready to   play ball ? Sorry, we had to... Here are a few of the baseball road trip routes we're most looking forward to.

3 MLB Stadium Road Trip Ideas

Whether you have just enough time for a quick weekend getaway or you can devote multiple weeks to your baseball road trip, here are three awesome itineraries.

Psst...love national parks just as much as you do baseball? Check out five of the most epic  national parks road trip itinerary ideas !

Best of the Midwest

With the potential to catch games at four stadiums  and  visit several iconic American landmarks, this is the perfect baseball road trip!  Start in either St. Louis or Milwaukee, then make a stop in Chicago, where you can visit the home stadiums of both the Cubs and the White Sox.

Along the way, be sure to set aside time to check out the   Gateway Arch in St. Louis   (the country's smallest national park!), go up to the Sky Deck of Chicago's Willis Tower, and grab a brew  —   or two  —   on Lake Michigan in Milwaukee.

If you have more time to spend on your MLB stadium road trip, you can also start from Kansas City, Missouri (home of the Royals), and/or add a stop to catch a Twins game in Minneapolis-St. Paul.

The famous sign and statue outside Wrigley Field in Chicago, a must on any baseball road trip

Sunny Southwest

There's nothing quite like taking in a game with a cold beverage in hand on a gorgeous sunny day, are we right? On this awesome baseball road trip through Arizona and California, you'll get to experience plenty of just that!

Catch the Diamondbacks in Phoenix, then take an easy drive west to   southern California . In San Diego, stop to watch the Padres before heading up to L.A. where you can catch both the Dodgers and the Angels.

If you start this MLB stadium road trip in Phoenix and time it just right, you can catch several spring training games  plus  opening day!

Petco Park in San Diego with the Coronado Bridge in the background, a great stop for a baseball road trip

East Coast Classic

No matter who "your" team is, this is the ultimate baseball road trip! With stops at some of the most iconic MLB stadiums (including the very oldest, Fenway in Boston) and a visit to Cooperstown, any serious baseball fan will appreciate this one.

Depending on home schedules and how much time you have, you can catch the Orioles, Phillies, Nationals, Mets, Yankees, and Red Sox. Plus, the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown is a fantastic detour traveling between New York and Boston!

Even if you're short on time, you can easily catch three games in Baltimore,   Washington, DC , and Philadelphia. As a bonus, each of these cities has a TON to see and do outside of baseball!

Baseball Road Trip Stadium Souvenirs

So, are you as excited to plan this summer's baseball road trip as we are?! Before you head out, don't forget to include stadium souvenirs in your budget.

Much like game ticket stubs, our Limited-Edition Baseball Glove Wanderchain and MLB Stadium Tokens make wonderful stadium souvenirs for preserving memories of your trip — and bonus, you don't have to worry about them fading, wrinkling, or tearing.

Shop the complete  Baseball Collection now, and consider customizing your tokens by adding the dates you visit each stadium! Safe travels, and keep your eyes (and hands!) open for foul balls!

For a multi city trip, do I purchase game tickets first or the overnight stay in a hotel

Hello baseball lovers! I came across this blog and wanted to reach out as I have a property for sale here in Denver, CO, that is connected to Coors Field. I thought you may be interested!

The condo is in McGregor Square, which was developed in 2020 by the owner of the Rockies baseball team. It is Denver’s newest luxury residence, and the plaza is outstanding, especially for BB enthusiasts! It is walkable to the best of lower downtown Denver, is right across the street from Coors Field, and the amenities are simply outstanding, including the almost 360 degree views from the pool deck of the mountains, city and Coors Field. The condo itself has those same views.

Here is the link to the property, and there is a fantastic video that showcases both Coors Field and the downtown Denver lifestyle: https://1901-wazee-street-unit—901.lovewhereyoulivedenver.com/

So you no longer have the MLB ballpark tokens??

We are 21 stadiums in with our yearly trip taking us to Seattle this year.

we are one of those stadium hunters families. we only have 2 left to see, seattle and arizona. after testing out your planner i wish i could have used it. it made planning a trip so much easier than the way i did it by printing out all the schedules and plotting them on a calender. although i did leave some time between stadiums in case of rain or to do other things in those cities. it has been a lot of fun for us. something that i know we will always remember doing together.

Baseball Road Trip Planner 2024

You CAN There From Here

Trip Search By Cities

Trip Search By Cities is intended for those who know exactly which cities they want to visit. Select the cities to visit and all trips visting those cities will be returned. Note that the trips returned will not contain any stadiums not selected Only those teams selected in the check boxes will be contained in any trips returned (e.g. choosing only BAL, BOS and PHI will NOT return a BAL/BOS/PHI/PIT trip since PIT was not selected)

  • You must select at least 3 Teams in the Checkbox
  • Start City - The city chosen must be one of the cities chosen in the check boxes
  • Number of Days - The length of trip in days. This must be greater than or equal to the number of cities chosen in the check boxes
  • Trips over 17 days are not available in the Planner due to the computational burden of calculating them. So choosiing more than 17 cities here will always result in no trips found
  • As the number of cities increases, there will be fewer trips found. It is not unusual for a combination of teams to result in no trips found. For longer trips, not every possible trip is considered. So, for example, for a given selection of 15 teams, there may be a feasible 31 day trip, but it won't be found due to the complexity in finding it

MLB ballpark road trip ideas for the 2022 season

Dodger Stadium center field entrance

After quite a bit of uncertainty , the 2022 Major League Baseball season is on! And we can commence planning for MLB ballpark road trips this summer.

Because of the MLB lockout, I delayed in writing this post, as I wanted to see if the labor issues would force any changes to the master schedule released last summer. Even though Opening Day will now be pushed back by almost a week, the schedule will mostly stay the same , with each team gaining makeup dates somewhere along the way to fill in the first week of games that were canceled.

So that’s the good news: If you had already started planning some ballpark road trips off the previously released schedule, you won’t have to make any changes. In fact, you might gain an opportunity to see an extra game or two if it turns out a makeup game (likely in the form of a doubleheader) lands in your lap.

Longtime readers of this blog know that we do road trip suggestions for all the major leagues each season, including the NFL , NBA and NHL . We find it much easier to find good road trip itineraries in baseball because of the fact that the teams play nearly every day, so if anything, let this guide be a jumping-off point to finding an itinerary that works for your specific schedule.

Before diving in, check out our standing guide to putting together a good MLB ballpark road trip .

Like the other leagues, we try to apply a few ground rules to these itineraries:

  • We looked to pack as many games into as small a timeframe as possible, at least considering typical travel times by car (we won’t suggest you travel cross-country for games on back-to-back days, for instance).
  • We try to look only at trips where you’re traveling in the same general direction as you go from city to city (so no zig-zagging around).
  • We tried to limit the number of times you see a particular team to twice.
  • We looked only at minimum four-city trips, because longer trips are always more fun.
  • Because starting times can fluctuate, it’s possible that scheduled day games can impact travel. However, in nearly all of the below cases, itineraries can be stretched out by a day or two to allow for a less hectic travel schedule.

With that, check out our MLB ballpark road ideas for the 2022 season below.

1) Opening weekend in the Midwest

Friday, April 8: White Sox at Tigers Saturday, April 9: Brewers at Cubs Sunday, April 10: Pirates at Cardinals Monday, April 11: Guardians at Royals

The official Opening Day this year is on Thursday, April 7, but the original schedule called for only eight games that day. So consider Friday, April 8 to be the real Opening Day, and really the entire first few days should be thought of as opening weekend.

At any rate, you can start the season off in style with a quick dash through the Midwest, starting at Detroit’s Comerica Park and winding your way west with stops at Wrigley Field , Busch Stadium and Kauffman Stadium . It’s possible that weather will be a factor this early in the season, but note that every game on this itinerary will take place in the daytime.

Citi Field New York Mets events tickets parking hotels seating food

2) Heading up the Eastern Seaboard

Monday, May 2: Twins at Orioles Tuesday, May 3: Rangers at Phillies Wednesday, May 4: Braves at Mets Friday, May 6: Rangers at Yankees Saturday, May 7: White Sox at Red Sox

Begin this journey at Baltimore’s Oriole Park at Camden Yards , then work your way through some of MLB’s most classic ballparks on this early May road trip. You’ll make stops at Philadelphia’s Citizens Bank Park and New York’s Citi Field . After a rest day in the Big Apple, hit up Yankee Stadium and Fenway Park in one weekend.

3) The Memorial Day weekender, and more!

Friday, May 27: Royals at Twins Sunday, May 29: Cubs at White Sox Monday, May 30: Brewers at Cubs Tuesday, May 31: Twins at Tigers Wednesday, June 1: Royals at Guardians Friday, June 3: Diamondbacks at Pirates

Memorial Day weekend is traditionally a big one on the MLB schedule, so here’s a ballpark road trip that takes advantage of that and then some.

It begins at Target Field in Minneapolis with an appetizer of Royals-Twins. But the highlight is a full weekend spent in Chicago, first catching the Cubs-White Sox crosstown rivalry at Guaranteed Rate Field , then staying through the holiday to see the Cubbies host the Brewers at Wrigley Field .

From there, continue on to Detroit’s Comerica Park , Cleveland’s Progressive Field and Pittsburgh’s PNC Park on what could be a weeklong bonanza of a road trip.

Nationals Park Washington sports teams travel guide

4) The Independence Day sojourn

Saturday, July 2: Brewers at Pirates Sunday, July 3: Marlins at Nationals Monday, July 4: Rangers at Orioles Tuesday, July 5: Nationals at Phillies Thursday, July 7: Marlins at Mets Friday, July 8: Yankees  at Red Sox

Here’s another East Coast swing that revolves around Independence Day, also an important holiday on the MLB calendar. This particular ballpark road trip starts at Pittsburgh’s PNC Park , and after a stop at Nationals Park in Washington, you’ll be spending July 4 at Camden Yards with the Rangers and Orioles.

The trip continues with games at Philadelphia’s Citizens Bank Park and New York’s Citi Field , but the highlight just might be at the end, when you’ll have the chance to witness the Yankees-Red Sox rivalry at Fenway Park .

5) The All-Star week trip

Friday, July 15: Diamondbacks at Padres Saturday, July 16: Dodgers at Angels Sunday, July 17: All-Star Futures Game at Dodger Stadium Monday, July 18: All-Star Home Run Derby at Dodger Stadium Tuesday, July 19: MLB All-Star Game at Dodger Stadium Thursday, July 21: Giants at Dodgers Friday, July 22: Nationals at Diamondbacks

This road trip represents a unique chance to see some of the West Coast’s MLB ballparks while incorporating MLB All-Star Game festivities, which in 2022 will be held at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles.

While the All-Star Game is certainly the centerpiece of this itinerary, it still affords you the opportunity to visit other ballparks, including Petco Park in San Diego, Angel Stadium of Anaheim and, as a finale, Arizona’s Chase Field .

Globe Life Field

6) Dog days of summer

Wednesday, Aug. 3: Royals at White Sox Thursday, Aug. 4: Cubs at Cardinals Friday, Aug. 5: Red Sox at Royals Sunday, Aug. 7: White Sox at Rangers Tuesday, Aug. 9: Rangers at Astros

Itching for a long road trip to wrap up your summer break? While this is the longest itinerary of any of the ones we’re pitching here — it’s 500 miles from Kansas City to Arlington! — it does venture into some territory not easily covered on multi-city ballpark trips.

The starting point is Chicago, where the White Sox will be hosting the Royals at Guaranteed Rate Field . From there you’ll be able to knock off both ballparks in Missouri, Busch Stadium and Kauffman Stadium .

Then, use the extra day to head south to Texas, and see games at the Rangers’ Globe Life Field as well as Houston’s Minute Maid Park . As an added bonus, there are two rivalry games on this slate: a classic Cubs-Cardinals matchup and an all-Texas affair between the Rangers and Astros.

7) The California stretch run

Sunday, Sept. 25: Mets at Athletics Tuesday, Sept. 27: Rockies at Giants Thursday, Sept. 29: Athletics at Angels Friday, Sept. 30: Rockies at Dodgers Saturday, Oct. 1: White Sox at Padres

Finish the regular season in style with a road trip through all five of California’s MLB ballparks. The journey begins in the Bay Area, with stops at Oakland’s RingCentral Coliseum and San Francisco’s Oracle Park , with a day off in between.

Then, after a day spent traveling from NorCal to SoCal, knock off Angel Stadium of Anaheim , Dodger Stadium and Petco Park all in one flourish. You’re bound to see some games with playoff implications, while keeping summer alive in sunny California.

Travel app Sékr wants to help you plan your next road trip with its new AI tool

Sékr, a startup that offers a mobile app for outdoor enthusiasts and campers, is launching a new AI tool for planning road trips. The new tool, called Copilot, is available on the startup’s updated website and app, which is used by more than 100,000 users.

Sékr was founded in 2016 with the goal of helping the “van life” community find campsites based on their needs, such as shower facilities, restrooms, overnight van parking or free Wi-Fi. The app also allows users to connect with fellow travelers who want to participate in outdoor activities together, like rock climbing or skiing.

After being acquired by van company Peace Vans in December 2023, the startup is under new leadership. Sékr and Peace Vans CEO Harley Sitner was a user of the app for seven years but had noticed last year that the app had gone dormant. He learned that the founders of the startup were going to unwind the app due to the sudden shift in global fundraising climates in late 2022, despite having a strong user base. Sitner, who was a former product manager at Microsoft, was approached to acquire Sékr in November 2023.

Fast forward eight months, the startup is now looking to help people better plan the journeys to their destinations, while also updating the app with enhanced features that stay true to Sékr's original mission.

With the new AI-powered road trip planning tool, Sékr is combining natural language processing with proprietary data from its community of users who have left reviews and ratings about specific places. Copilot also looks at publicly-available data when creating road trip itineraries. The tool leverages OpenAI's GPT, Meta's Llama and others.

“For the millions of people traveling by van, car, or RV this summer, Sēkr Copilot will help you bypass hours of trip planning to quickly deliver a better itinerary,” Sitner said in a statement. “AI isn’t going to create a panoramic sunset, but it will help you overcome the notorious planner’s block, set you up for serendipitous moments, and connect you to an authentic road trip experience co-created by Sēkr’s incredible community of dedicated users.”

Copilot can be accessed via the new “Trip Planning” tab on the startup’s website or app. Once users opens up the tool, they will be asked to answer a series of prompts about where they’re going and what they’re looking for. The tool will then provide a travel itinerary that has editable trip legs that include camping destinations, stops for food and outdoor activities.

The idea behind Copilot is to help travelers discover unique places that they may not have known about otherwise. For instance, the tool may encourage travelers to check out a taco truck parked by the side of a dusty road in Baja that users have said offers better food than a 5-star reviewed Denny's outside of Los Angeles. Or, the tool may encourage users to explore secluded, unmarked areas in BLM (Bureau of Land Management) land that overlooks scenic views.

Sékr is available on iOS and Android . The app's basic features are free-to-use. Users can unlock premium features like, offline maps, event discount codes, and unlimited messaging and searching for $4.99 per month.

The startup previously received $2.25 million in seed funding led by Storyteller Overland, with participation from Backstage Capital, Techstars, Ad Astra Ventures, Crescent Ridge Ventures and Andy Ballester, the co-founder of GoFundMe.

Breaking News

Oakland athletics | crews battle new blaze northwest of corral fire, oakland athletics, subscriber only, oakland athletics | ‘road trip mike’ is attending all 81 a’s road games this year — but not for the reason you might think, michael marler has found himself throwing out first pitches and spreading dirt on the infield at games along his journey.

Oakland Athletics fan Mike Marler, of Sacramento, attends the game against the Texas Rangers at the Coliseum in Oakland on May 8, 2024. Marler, who is with the Road Trip Renegades, is traveling to all 81 road games for the A's this season. (Ray Chavez/Bay Area News Group)

On this August afternoon, Marler, a retired Air Force veteran more affectionately known as Road Trip Mike, stands next to Eric Martins, the A’s third base coach, in foul territory at Seattle’s T-Mobile Field. He holds a shovel designated for scooping dirt, donning a gray T-shirt, black shorts and slippers. Marler arrived in the Pacific Northwest as planned, but his luggage did not. Still, Marler braves on; he’s got his team to watch.

It’s one of many instances when Marler finds himself in a situation almost too fantastical to be true, but he proudly shows off a photo as he retells the story. In the life of Road Trip Mike, no tale is too tall, no story too grand, no anecdote too improbable. To Marler, he is nothing short of blessed.

“I live on cloud nine because of these little things,” Marler said.

A super fan’s super fan, Marler, after years of following the team on the road and befriending players and coaches, is attempting to attend every A’s away game this season. The 57-year-old Sacramento native unexpectedly went viral when his mission was mistakenly framed as a boycott , but Marler is solely fueled by his desire to support the team. With the A’s leaving Oakland and their long-term future murky, Marler, seemingly untouched by cynicism with an endless depository of memories, has become a constant.

“That man is the physical embodiment of fan love,” said A’s color commentator and former pitcher Dallas Braden. “I mean that in every aspect of what you think a fan is and why a fan would love any team, any sport. You spend two minutes with him and you can feel the genuineness that is dripping off of him. He’s like a character. He’s someone who somebody drew up and put into circulation in the world.”

Following his retirement in 2018, Marler began attending A’s games on the road, starting with about 20 contests. In the ensuing years, the number grew to 40, then 60. In 2021, the “Road Trip Mike” nickname gained steam. This year, Marler is running the gauntlet. He’ll often be joined by two close friends, Jack Lima and Bill Thomas, dubbed by Braden as “Road Trip Renegades.”

Marler’s journey coincides with the A’s final season in Oakland, but Marler is not boycotting the Coliseum, planning on attending around 20 games in Oakland. Last month, though, Hal (the Hot Dog Guy) Gordon posted a photo with Marler on social media, the accompanying caption insinuating that Marler was protesting. Marler made clear that is not the case. Gordon, for his part, said there was no malicious intent behind the post, adding he was given inaccurate information by a friend who connected the two. By the time Gordon realized the mistake, his post had already picked up steam.

“I got a lot of support from people in the organization,” Marler said. “They said, ‘Mike, we know you and that isn’t you.'”

“Mike is a great fan, and it’s not right that a fake fact about him went viral,” Gordon said in a text message. “I’m disappointed that I caused him to deal with this, and I’m sad that something I said that wasn’t true was seen by so many people.”

This nomadic lifestyle began when Marler, a proud veteran, noticed that several teams’ official stores did not offer veteran discounts, including the A’s. After meeting with A’s representatives, Marler helped push to institute a discount for veterans on tickets and merchandise. From there, Marler says he traveled across the country to meet with the remaining teams about implementing discounts.

Given the amount of time he spends away from home, Marler can be considered a veteran of the road, too. Marler occasionally flies, but most of his travels come by way of, appropriately enough, road trips in his Dodge Thor Rize van.

Planning trips is one thing, but executing them is another. Over the years, Marler has navigated his share of unexpected twists and turns.

This month, Marler’s flight from Seattle to Houston was rerouted to San Antonio due to weather. Three strangers, overhearing Marler discuss his travels, allowed him to cut in line. Another passenger willingly gave up their seat; Marler, in turn, gave the passenger a game-used baseball.

Last year, the A’s played the Marlins and Pirates on the road in back-to-back series without an off-day in between. Undaunted, Marler drove roughly 16 hours straight from Miami to Pittsburgh in time for Oakland’s first game in the Steel City.

This season, he slept in the parking lots of the Royals’ Kauffman Stadium and Rangers’ Globe Life Field when a day game followed a night game, a tactic he has employed in the past.

As for how much all of this costs? Marler says he doesn’t have a clue.

“I’m not in dire straits,” Marler laughs, “but yet, I’m not wealthy.”

What Marler doesn’t have in material wealth, he owns in stories.

In Washington D.C., Marler met two A’s fans from Germany who were “dressed in A’s gear like you wouldn’t believe.” When one fan recited just about every pitch from Braden’s 2010 perfect game, Marler brought the parties together. The fans gave Braden a ball that now sits in his safe at home.

In Tampa Bay, Marler connected a young fan with Tony Kemp. When Kemp missed out on signing a kid’s baseball card due to media obligations, Marler retrieved the card and brought it to Kemp, who not only signed the card but put together a care package for the young fan.

At the Coliseum, he has thrown out a first pitch and helped announce the starting lineup.

There have also been occasions where Marler has visited former A’s with their new teams. He saw Marcus Semien in Dunedin during Semien’s lone season with the Blue Jays. Earlier this year, he saw Robbie Grossman in Chicago when he was with the White Sox. Most recently, Marler traveled to Buffalo to see Kemp, currently playing for the Twins’ Triple-A affiliate.

One of Marler’s most important stories, however, long predates his days as Road Trip Mike.

In May 2013, Marler underwent sextuple bypass surgery, vividly recalling a doctor telling him that he was at great risk of suffering a massive heart attack. Marler struggled with recovery, falling into a depression. As spring gave way to summer, Marler began to make strides in his recovery, an improvement that unfolded alongside with the A’s catching fire. Oakland won 24 of its final 33 games to win the AL West, and Marler firmly believes he is here today because of the green and gold.

Marler’s presence doesn’t go unnoticed. He’s a favorite among the players and coaches, and to A’s manager Mark Kotsay, some on the team consider Marler like extended family. Last year, Marler gifted every player and coach a coin that reads, “Life is a journey, not a destination.” Along with Braden, Marler befriended the late Ray Fosse. Marler jokes that the team has “kind of adopted me.”

“Sometimes, the road can be a lonely place where all the fans are yelling at you,” Semien said. “It’s good to have support out there, and he definitely brought that.”

Following this season, the A’s will head to Marler’s native Sacramento with the intention of eventually landing in Las Vegas. Marler has been asked on multiple occasions what he’ll do when the A’s leave. His answer is simple.

“Those kids are going to run out that dugout and they’re going to play baseball and I get to watch them,” he said. “I don’t care where it is.”
