Planning The Ultimate Baseball Road Trip

Fans at a baseball stadium at night with the field illuminated, and the words "Guide to Planning the Ultimate Baseball Road Trip"

In honor of Opening Day...AND our brand-new MLB Baseball Collection , we're celebrating two beloved All-American pastimes: baseball and road trips .

The classic baseball road trip is a tale almost as old as the sport itself. In fact, there are even official names for its enthusiasts: stadium hunters and ballpark chasers , for example.

Whether you yourself have chased a ballpark or two or you're just hearing about this whole MLB stadium road trip thing for the first time, let's get into it!

Tips for Planning a Baseball Road Trip

One of the best things about planning a baseball road trip is that there's really no wrong way to do it. There are multiple strategies for how to plan your route and itinerary, depending on your individual preferences and how much time you have.

For example, you may want   to visit as many stadiums as possible or see  as many  games  as possible. Or, you can follow a specific team around for awhile, cheering them on in different cities.

The main thing to keep in mind for an MLB stadium road trip is that scheduling is super important. If you want to visit a certain stadium, the home team needs to actually be in town, hosting an opponent. And if you plan to visit multiple stadiums, ideally, all those teams will be playing at home around the same time.

Wondering how the heck you're supposed to know who's playing where and when? We're glad you asked.

Allow us to introduce you to an amazing, easy-to-use tool, cleverly called   The Baseball Road Trip Planner .

This handy tool lets you select all the teams you want to see (including minor league teams!) and customize the length of your trip and specific days for games. It even suggests in what order you should visit the stadiums! Once you customize your options, the baseball road trip planner gives you sets of dates throughout the season when it's actually possible.

Ready to   play ball ? Sorry, we had to... Here are a few of the baseball road trip routes we're most looking forward to.

3 MLB Stadium Road Trip Ideas

Whether you have just enough time for a quick weekend getaway or you can devote multiple weeks to your baseball road trip, here are three awesome itineraries.

Psst...love national parks just as much as you do baseball? Check out five of the most epic  national parks road trip itinerary ideas !

Best of the Midwest

With the potential to catch games at four stadiums  and  visit several iconic American landmarks, this is the perfect baseball road trip!  Start in either St. Louis or Milwaukee, then make a stop in Chicago, where you can visit the home stadiums of both the Cubs and the White Sox.

Along the way, be sure to set aside time to check out the   Gateway Arch in St. Louis   (the country's smallest national park!), go up to the Sky Deck of Chicago's Willis Tower, and grab a brew  —   or two  —   on Lake Michigan in Milwaukee.

If you have more time to spend on your MLB stadium road trip, you can also start from Kansas City, Missouri (home of the Royals), and/or add a stop to catch a Twins game in Minneapolis-St. Paul.

The famous sign and statue outside Wrigley Field in Chicago, a must on any baseball road trip

Sunny Southwest

There's nothing quite like taking in a game with a cold beverage in hand on a gorgeous sunny day, are we right? On this awesome baseball road trip through Arizona and California, you'll get to experience plenty of just that!

Catch the Diamondbacks in Phoenix, then take an easy drive west to   southern California . In San Diego, stop to watch the Padres before heading up to L.A. where you can catch both the Dodgers and the Angels.

If you start this MLB stadium road trip in Phoenix and time it just right, you can catch several spring training games  plus  opening day!

Petco Park in San Diego with the Coronado Bridge in the background, a great stop for a baseball road trip

East Coast Classic

No matter who "your" team is, this is the ultimate baseball road trip! With stops at some of the most iconic MLB stadiums (including the very oldest, Fenway in Boston) and a visit to Cooperstown, any serious baseball fan will appreciate this one.

Depending on home schedules and how much time you have, you can catch the Orioles, Phillies, Nationals, Mets, Yankees, and Red Sox. Plus, the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown is a fantastic detour traveling between New York and Boston!

Even if you're short on time, you can easily catch three games in Baltimore,   Washington, DC , and Philadelphia. As a bonus, each of these cities has a TON to see and do outside of baseball!

Baseball Road Trip Stadium Souvenirs

So, are you as excited to plan this summer's baseball road trip as we are?! Before you head out, don't forget to include stadium souvenirs in your budget.

Much like game ticket stubs, our Limited-Edition Baseball Glove Wanderchain and MLB Stadium Tokens make wonderful stadium souvenirs for preserving memories of your trip — and bonus, you don't have to worry about them fading, wrinkling, or tearing.

Shop the complete  Baseball Collection now, and consider customizing your tokens by adding the dates you visit each stadium! Safe travels, and keep your eyes (and hands!) open for foul balls!

For a multi city trip, do I purchase game tickets first or the overnight stay in a hotel

Hello baseball lovers! I came across this blog and wanted to reach out as I have a property for sale here in Denver, CO, that is connected to Coors Field. I thought you may be interested!

The condo is in McGregor Square, which was developed in 2020 by the owner of the Rockies baseball team. It is Denver’s newest luxury residence, and the plaza is outstanding, especially for BB enthusiasts! It is walkable to the best of lower downtown Denver, is right across the street from Coors Field, and the amenities are simply outstanding, including the almost 360 degree views from the pool deck of the mountains, city and Coors Field. The condo itself has those same views.

Here is the link to the property, and there is a fantastic video that showcases both Coors Field and the downtown Denver lifestyle: https://1901-wazee-street-unit—901.lovewhereyoulivedenver.com/

Here is the link to the overall community: https://www.mcgregorsquare.com/

If anyone has any interest or questions, please feel free to reach out!

We are 21 stadiums in with our yearly trip taking us to Seattle this year.

we are one of those stadium hunters families. we only have 2 left to see, seattle and arizona. after testing out your planner i wish i could have used it. it made planning a trip so much easier than the way i did it by printing out all the schedules and plotting them on a calender. although i did leave some time between stadiums in case of rain or to do other things in those cities. it has been a lot of fun for us. something that i know we will always remember doing together.

MLB ballpark road trip ideas for the 2023 season

Oracle Park in San Francisco, home of the Giants

Oracle Park

Thinking about planning an MLB ballpark road trip in 2023? We’re here to help.

Major League Baseball has already released the 2023 schedule, allowing all of us to get an early start on ballpark road trip planning.

And this slate comes with a very interesting new wrinkle: For the first time ever, every team will play every other team. While this is a definite break from tradition in a very traditional sport, it does offer fans new opportunities to see their favorite teams in different places.

While it’s certainly fun to follow a team on a lengthy road trip, the ballpark itineraries we offer here are targeted for a different audience: the “ballpark chaser,” or someone who wants to visit as many parks as possible over a limited timeframe (less than a week).

Whether you’ve made it your goal to visit every major-league ballpark or you just want to experience a few different cities, we hope these ideas can inspire you to get going on your road trip planning.

Longtime readers of this blog know that we do road trip suggestions for all the major leagues each season, including the NFL , NBA and NHL . We find it much easier to find good road trip itineraries in baseball because of the fact that the teams play nearly every day, so if anything, let this guide be a jumping-off point to finding an itinerary that works for your specific schedule.

If you’re new to the idea of baseball trip planning, you can also check out our standing guide to putting together a good MLB ballpark road trip .

Like the other leagues, we try to apply a few ground rules to these itineraries:

  • We looked to pack as many games into as small a timeframe as possible, at least considering typical travel times by car (we won’t suggest you travel cross-country for games on back-to-back days, for instance).
  • We try to look only at trips where you’re traveling in the same general direction as you go from city to city (so no zig-zagging around).
  • We tried to limit the number of times you see a particular team to twice.
  • We looked only at minimum four-city trips, because longer trips are always more fun.
  • Because starting times can fluctuate, it’s possible that scheduled day games can impact travel. However, in nearly all of the below cases, itineraries can be stretched out by a day or two to allow for a less hectic travel schedule.

Ready to get inspired? Here are our ideas for MLB ballpark road trips in 2023.

1) The Midwest opener

Wednesday, April 5: Braves at Cardinals Thursday, April 6: Giants at White Sox Friday, April 7: Rangers at Cubs Saturday, April 8: Cardinals at Brewers Sunday, April 9: Astros at Twins

Opening Day in 2023 is on March 30, but if you wait a week, you can take this spin up the Midwest to check off five different ballparks: Busch Stadium in St. Louis, Guaranteed Rate Field and Wrigley Field in Chicago, American Family Field in Milwaukee and Target Field in Minneapolis.

One note: The Brewers game on April 8 begins at 6:10 p.m. local time, while the Twins game the following day is slated for a 1:10 p.m. first pitch. If that turnaround is too difficult, the Twins also play at home on Monday, April 10 — also a 1:10 p.m. first pitch against the White Sox.

2) From Midwest to East

Monday, April 24: Rangers at Reds Tuesday, April 25: Rockies at Guardians Wednesday, April 26: Dodgers at Pirates Thursday, April 27: Mariners at Phillies* Friday, April 28: Braves at Mets Saturday, April 29: Guardians at Red Sox

Check off a slew of parks on this weeklong trip that begins in Ohio and winds all the way to Massachusetts. You’ll make stops at Cincinnati’s Great American Ball Park , Cleveland’s Progressive Field , Pittsburgh’s PNC Park , Philadelphia’s Citizens Bank Park , New York’s Citi Field and Boston’s Fenway Park . Whew!

One quick-turnaround alert: The Mariners-Phillies game is an afternoon contest. Coming off a night game in Pittsburgh, perhaps you’d prefer to make the stop in Philly optional.

This ballpark road trip idea is customizable in a couple ways. The Nationals are hosting a weekend series against the Pirates at Nationals Park April 28-30, so you could head south from Pittsburgh or Philly instead of north. Also, if the idea of seeing Citi Field but not Yankee Stadium bugs you, spend the weekend in NYC and hit up Guardians-Yankees in the Bronx on Monday, May 1.

3) The West Coast holiday trip

Monday, May 29: Braves at Athletics Tuesday, May 30: Pirates at Giants Wednesday, May 31: Nationals at Dodgers Friday, June 2: Cubs at Padres Saturday, June 3: Braves at Diamondbacks

Beginning on Memorial Day, take a tour through most of California’s ballparks, starting with a stop at Oakland’s RingCentral Coliseum and San Francisco’s Oracle Park . From there, make your way south to check out Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles and Petco Park in San Diego, before finishing up in the desert with a game at Chase Field in Phoenix.

Like with the idea above, perhaps you would rather see both the Dodgers and Angels during a single visit to the Los Angeles area. Unfortunately, with this one you’ll have to wait until Cubs-Angels at Angel Stadium of Anaheim on Tuesday, June 6.

4) Winding around the Great Lakes

Saturday, July 1 and/or Sunday, July 2: Red Sox at Blue Jays Monday, July 3: Braves at Guardians Tuesday, July 4: Athletics at Tigers Wednesday, July 5: Blue Jays at White Sox Thursday, July 6: Cubs at Brewers

Celebrate the national holidays of two great nations on this ballpark road trip that begins with a weekend at Toronto’s Rogers Centre — go to the Canada Day game on July 1 to see the Blue Jays decked out in red jerseys!

Then, you’ll head back stateside for games at Cleveland’s Progressive Field , Detroit’s Comerica Park , Chicago’s Guaranteed Rate Field and Milwaukee’s American Family Field . Ring in the Fourth in Detroit, where the Tigers will be taking on the A’s.

5) The All-Star week trip

Monday, July 10: MLB Home Run Derby in Seattle Tuesday, July 11: MLB All-Star Game in Seattle Friday, July 14: Yankees at Rockies Sunday, July 16: Rays at Royals Monday, July 17: Marlins at Cardinals Tuesday, July 18: Nationals at Cubs

In 2023, MLB’s All-Star Weekend will take place at Seattle’s T-Mobile Park . Seattle, however, is the most isolated locale in the majors, a two-hour flight from the nearest rival.

So you can either take this ballpark road trip idea as an opportunity to experience Seattle and All-Star Weekend and make it a jumping-off point for a full-on road trip … or you can cut out Seattle entirely.

Denver’s Coors Field is also somewhat isolated in relation to other major-league parks, so take an extra day crossing the Plains before your next stop at Kansas City’s Kauffman Stadium . Games at Busch Stadium in St. Louis and Wrigley Field in Chicago round out this itinerary.

Wrigley Field

6) Touring the South

Saturday, Aug. 12: Yankees at Marlins Sunday, Aug. 13: Guardians at Rays Monday, Aug. 14: Yankees at Braves Wednesday, Aug. 16: Guardians at Reds

Gear up for the humidity and see some major-league ball down south in this road trip, beginning down in Miami at LoanDepot Park . Then head north, with stops at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg and Truist Park in Atlanta before finishing up with an all-Ohio battle at Cincinnati’s Great American Ball Park .

By the way, if that Atlanta-to-Cincinnati final leg seems too daunting, don’t worry! It’s actually 460 miles via Interstate 75 — on the high end for a day-long drive, for sure, but doable based on our experience! At any rate, that’s why we added a day off in between.

7) The East Coast stretch run

Sunday, Sept. 24: Braves at Nationals Tuesday, Sept. 26: Nationals at Orioles Wednesday, Sept. 27: Pirates at Phillies Thursday, Sept. 28: Marlins at Mets

For the final week of the 2023 regular season, head east for stops at Nationals Park in Washington, Oriole Park at Camden Yards in Baltimore, Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia and Citi Field in New York. Division races in both the AL and NL East could be on the line — will one of these games prove to be a clincher?

The launch of the complete package of Minor League Ballpark Guides , presented by Wyndham, offers an opportunity to visit 119 of the greatest places on the planet without leaving your desk. But at a certain point, you're going to want to stretch your legs.

These guides are liable to provoke adventurous fans into a frenzy of planning -- planning road trips with besties, honeymoons, family summer vacations and solo travel all across these United States (and Vancouver) in pursuit of all of the experiences that make the Minors great.

For most of us, any journey to some Minor League towns by necessity omits others. There are more worthy potential stops than would possible for any one trip. The fun is in picking spots to suit your needs and whims. And, obviously, teams' respective schedules will not always allow you to conveniently see games at every park in one area. But to jumpstart your imagination, below are easily traversable sample itineraries for six regions.

Carolinas in your mind (and IRL)

These two states arguably make up America's very best territory for Minor League Baseball road tripping. With 15 affiliated pro clubs in the Carolinas, it'd be reasonable to spend multiple vacations over multiple seasons checking out everything here.

Here's a way to pass through seven Minor League towns without spending as much as a dozen hours total (traffic permitting) behind the wheel. (Make it nine parks by adding a stop at the home of the Winston-Salem Dash on your way to Durham and heading directly to the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers when you wrap up in Charlotte.)

Step-by-step directions ( click here for Google Maps ) :

  • Asheville Tourists | Tickets
  • Hickory Crawdads | Tickets
  • Durham Bulls | Tickets
  • Fayetteville Woodpeckers | Tickets
  • Columbia Fireflies | Tickets
  • Greenville Drive | Tickets
  • Charlotte Knights | Tickets

_________________________________________________________

Open the Golden Gate

This journey begins in the California capital and traverses a stretch of the agriculturally rich Central Valley before swooping into Silicon Valley. It can conveniently be capped with a Giants game in San Francisco and/or an A's game in Oakland, or you could turn your route into a circle by bookending the trip with stops at the big league parks.

  • Sacramento River Cats | Tickets
  • Stockton Ports | Tickets
  • Modesto Nuts | Tickets
  • San Jose Giants | Tickets

Just Plains fun

The Great Plains and the Midwest are loaded with Minor League teams and Minor League history. The vastness of this chunk of continent can, however, make it less than ideal for seeing several games in a short timeframe. Here's one possible way to hit five without driving forever and ever on every day of the trip.

  • Omaha Storm Chasers | Tickets
  • Iowa Cubs | Tickets
  • Cedar Rapids Kernels | Tickets
  • Quad Cities River Bandits | Tickets
  • Peoria Chiefs | Tickets

I-65 southbound

This trip takes you to the homes of some of the wackiest and wildest Minors teams operating today, as well as some of the most scenic and distinct ballparks in the world. Also? It's a must for fans of down-home cooking, which you can find at many of these stadiums and innumerable spots along the way.

  • Bowling Green Hot Rods | Tickets
  • Nashville Sounds | Tickets
  • Rocket City Trash Pandas | Tickets
  • Birmingham Barons | Tickets
  • Montgomery Biscuits | Tickets
  • Pensacola Blue Wahoos | Tickets

Running with the salmon

If you have time on your hands, take an extensive trip to all the Minor League parks of Oregon, Washington and British Columbia. Here's a way to see three highlights, with an easy chance to catch the Mariners at home on your way to Tacoma, or on your way into or out of the region.

  • Vancouver Canadians | Tickets
  • Everett AquaSox | Tickets
  • Tacoma Rainiers | Tickets

Starting a few miles upriver from New York City, you can travel east by northeast to get a comprehensive (but by no means exhaustive) Minor League experience in the Hudson Valley and four New England states. Plan it just right and you'll be able to take a slight detour to include a game at Fenway Park on your way from Worcester, Mass. to Manchester, N.H.

  • Hudson Valley Renegades | Tickets
  • Hartford Yard Goats | Tickets
  • Worcester Red Sox | Tickets
  • New Hampshire Fisher Cats | Tickets
  • Portland Sea Dogs | Tickets

Greene swaps bat, swats 2 HRs as Tigers keep foot on gas

Jason Beck

DETROIT -- Riley Greene isn’t quite as superstitious now as he was during his prospect days, but he still has his habits. If the Tigers’ All-Star outfielder feels that his bat doesn’t have any more hits in it, he’s not afraid to switch it up. Sometimes, it just takes a hitless game.

So after going 0-for-4 Saturday, Greene swapped out the bat. It was his fifth switch this week, by his count.

After two homers -- both off left-handed pitchers -- and three RBIs in Sunday’s 4-2 win over the Orioles at Comerica Park, he was feeling good about his pick.

“That bat was swinging a little heavy, so I had to switch it up,” he said.

The victory in the rubber match of a three-game set kept the Tigers within 2 1/2 games of the Twins for the final AL Wild Card spot as Detroit prepares for a six-game road trip that begins in Kansas City and ends with another three-game set against the O’s in Baltimore.

  • Come out Sept. 28 for Tigers Long Sleeve Shirt giveaway night

The Tigers will likely see Cade Povich again during that series. Greene won’t likely see as good of a pitch to hit as he saw from the O’s rookie left-hander Sunday.

Though Greene has established himself as the centerpiece of this Tigers lineup, he had never homered against a left-handed starter before Sunday. He hadn’t homered off any lefty before getting to four southpaw relievers this season. While the Tigers loaded up on right-handed bats against Povich, they kept Greene among a quartet of left-handed bats.

Povich was nasty against Tigers righties, allowing only a Spencer Torkelson double while racking up six of his eight strikeouts against them. He fanned the top of the Tigers’ lineup in order in the first inning, including Greene with a sinker on the outside corner. It was a little jarring to Greene, who makes a point of saying he’s always on the fastball.

But with a runner on first and two outs in the third inning, Povich got too aggressive against Greene, who took a first-pitch fastball in the middle of the zone for a strike but was ready when Povich repeated it.

“I took a few pitches down the middle in the zone that I didn't want to take,” Greene said. “I decided I just needed to be aggressive and just be on go and got a good pitch to hit.”

The resulting 412-foot drive gave the Tigers a 2-0 lead and gave a young fan a souvenir, much to the delight of the kid’s family.

That was the lone mistake of the afternoon for Povich, who retired his final seven batters from there. But with Keider Montero picking up where he left off from his shutout five days earlier , it was enough to send Montero through five innings with the lead.

Matt Vierling’s two-out walk and stolen base off O’s All-Star catcher Adley Rutschman, who had thrown out two Tigers would-be basestealers on Friday, set up Colt Keith’s opposite-field RBI single off Jacob Webb, providing an add-on run that proved critical once Rutschman homered off Will Vest in the top of the eighth. With Detroit clinging to a one-run lead and former Tigers closer Gregory Soto on for the O’s to keep it close against the middle of Detroit’s order in the eighth, Greene stepped up again.

Greene knew Soto’s stuff from their time as teammates two years ago, from the power sinker to the wicked slider. But when Soto hung a sweeper in the middle of the zone with a 1-2 count, Greene was ready.

“It's still not a comfortable at-bat, just because he's really good,” Greene said. “Just trying to put the barrel on the ball.”

Greene’s 23rd home run of the season was his sixth off a lefty this year, tied for eighth-most among left-handed hitters against left-handed pitchers. The group ahead of him is star-studded: Juan Soto (13), Shohei Ohtani (11), Kyle Schwarber (11), Yordan Alvarez (10), Matt Olson (9), Bryce Harper (8) and Gunnar Henderson (8).

“There’s still growth [to come]. I mean, he’s not a finished product,” manager A.J. Hinch said. “I know the All-Star season can make you feel that way. He’s still learning, growing, developing and getting more comfortable with his game plan. I thought he did a good job today with that specifically and staying with it.

“He’s a tremendous player as is, but he’s still got room to grow, and that’s the exciting part about him. He’s a continuous learner. He works his tail off, and he’s always in the middle of big things for us.”

The Baseball Road Trip Planner for 2024 and 2025

Surfing dog restores wounded Army veteran. Here's how.

Kent loves to surf. Frontwards or backward on the surfboard – it makes little difference to him. If you’re old enough, his thick, blond hair might bring back memories of the “bushy, bushy blond” the Beach Boys sang about in their 1963 hit “Surfin’ USA” .

Except that Kent is a dog.

He is a 45-pound, 3-year-old Labrador, a service dog to legally blind Army vet Rob Sanchas, of Warren. Kent is dual-certified as a guide dog and a PTSD dog; he was raised by America’s VetDogs at their facility on Long Island.

It costs more than $50,000 to breed, train and place one assistance dog; however, all of VetDogs’ services are provided at no charge to the recipient.  Funding comes from the generosity of individual, community and corporate donors.

Kent was the featured dog of the Blinded Veterans Association last March . In his “interview,” Kent said, “I have been working with my veteran, Rob Sanchas, since June of 2023.”

Kent was born in Smithtown, New York, in October 2021 and lived in New York City, Georgia and Boston during his “puppy-raising time.” He concluded proudly, “I am the only one from my litter to become a service dog.”

Since Kent bonded with Rob Sanchas, the two have been inseparable. “He’s the perfect match for me, because he also likes to do what I like to do,” Sanchas told The Providence Journal.

In addition to being an enthusiastic surfer, Kent is also a kayaker and keeps a watchful eye from the coach’s boat while Rob is in a rowing scull. He also loves to frolic in the snow, although he has not yet figured out how to join Rob when he makes downhill runs with Blind Skier guides.

A training accident triggers brain damage

Rob was born and raised in Warren. He went on Army active duty in July 1986, two weeks after his graduation from high school.

After qualifying as a communications specialist at the Army Signal School in Fort Gordon, Georgia , he went to Fort Bragg, North Carolina, where he served with the 3rd Battalion, 8th Field Artillery. In 1988 he injured his eye in a training accident. A bungee cord under tension popped out and hit him in the eye. He fell over and was knocked unconscious when he hit his head during the fall.

In April 2022 he told Journal reporter Mark Daniels , “It somehow bruised the area of my brain called my visual cortex, where my brain and my eyes connect at the back of my head.”

He returned to duty, having lost 25% of his vision in that eye. Unknown to him, he had suffered permanent damage that was slow to manifest itself.

In 1989 Rob was assigned to Schwäbisch Hall, Germany, with the 3rd Air Traffic Control (ATC) Battalion, 58th Aviation Regiment.

His unit had a huge job – providing air traffic control support to two U.S. Corps (5th and 7th), and to the entire European Communications Zone that stretched from the North Sea to Turkey.

Rob loved Germany and made a serious effort to learn the language. By the time he left the Army in May 1994, he was fluent enough to stay and get a job with a local tech company. He married a German woman and lived there for eight more years.

During that time, he fell in love with skiing. Rob first skied when he was 13 but injured himself and did not pick it up again until Germany. A whole new world opened up to him. “I wasn’t much of an athlete in high school,” he told me. Somehow the skiing clicked the second time around. He used his time off to ski on some of the best slopes Germany and Austria had to offer.

But as his vision failed, he had to give up skiing.

His failing vision cost him more than just the loss of sight

Doctors thought his vision loss would stabilize, but as the years went on, it got worse. He entered the Community College of Rhode Island in 2006, but had to stop in 2008 due to his deteriorating eyesight.

“I went through seven eyeglass prescriptions in 10 months,” he said. “My vision went from 20/30 to 20/300.”

As his vision worsened, so did his stress level. Doctors noted that as his stress levels rose, his vision also got worse. It was a vicious circle.

In 2010, he was declared legally blind.

"Now my eyes and my brain speak different languages,” he told Daniels. “I have a slight delay. I see four of everything and they're all on top of each other, so it takes a while for me to decipher what I am actually seeing."

Rob felt helpless. “I did not leave my room for six months. I was like, ‘This is not the way I want to live; I can't go on like this.’”

A struggling veteran seeks so much more than just medical help. He's searching for a lifeline.

“I finally reached out and asked for help,” he said. He heard about PTSD counseling offered by the Providence Vet Center and stuck his toe in that water about 20 years ago.

For some reason, he drifted away from that program and did not reconnect with the Vet Center for about eight years. One summer, he stopped at their booth at WaterFire and has been active in Vet Center activities ever since.

In 2016, he attended a National Federation of the Blind meeting where he heard a speaker describe running while tethered to a guide.

He told Daniels that was how he got into running. He was amazed at how much running relieved his stress. "All those anxieties, all those fears dissipate while you're running,” he said. He zeroed in on the voice and movements of his guide, tethered to him at the waist.

He either closes his eyes or looks directly down at the ground. “That way there's no distractions.”

Rob started running about eight years ago. Before he lost his vision, running a marathon had never occurred to him. Seven years ago, he completed his first: the New York City Marathon. This spring he traveled to London to run his 21st marathon.

“On the running circuit, people talk about the Big Six: New York, Chicago, Boston, London, Berlin and Tokyo,” he said. “I’ve completed five and plan to go to Tokyo next year to get the sixth.”

More: U.S. Army veteran won't let blindness stop him from running Boston Marathon 2022

Rob acknowledges he was never particularly athletic while growing up. “Most of my athletic stuff has come later in life,” he said. And he learned new activities – rowing, surfing, fishing, kayaking – as a blind person.

He was introduced to the Blinded Veterans Association, a group he now serves as coordinator for its Rhode Island and Southeastern Massachusetts Region.

He finally went back to school, at Rhode Island College, and earned a bachelor of arts degree in special education. Three years ago, at age 53, he was awarded a master's degree from UMass Boston.

My first contact with Rob

In April 2023, I wrote a column about a few Rhode Island veterans who paid their own way to Snowmass, Colorado , to participate in the 2023  National Disabled Veterans Winter Sports Clinic . Rob Sanchas was one of those participants.

Jenny Vulpis was his VA therapist. When he started working with her, she asked if he used to ski. "If I could only do one sport for the rest of my life, skiing would be it," he replied. "It's an amazing sport, and I lost it."

"Maybe not," said Jenny.

"But how could I ski if I can't see?"

Rob can make out shapes and shadows and can still distinguish the color orange.

"So I wore an orange bib saying ‘Blind Skier.’ My guides also wore orange bibs and helped steer me in the right direction by speaking through a headset."

The Snowmass experience was just what Rob needed. It got him back into his all-time favorite sport and also introduced him to some new ones. He signed up for cycling, sled hockey, curling and rock wall climbing.

“I really liked sled hockey the best,” he said. “It’s amazing what they can do with these audible pucks. Ball bearings rattle around inside a shell, and you play by following the  sound of the puck as it goes around the ice.”

Three months after the Colorado trip, Rob paired up with Kent, opening more new vistas.

Service dog Kent and the future

Rob continues to be amazed at what his dog can do, and how Kent approaches each new adventure with over-the-top enthusiasm.

“When we began surfing, I could not get him off the board or out of the water,” he laughed. Other people had to hold Kent back so Rob could try to stand up on the board.

“I’d given up on my life and lost hope. I now have a bucket list that I actually have a chance of fulfilling again.

“Some opportunities are to do something I’ve never done, while others offer me the chance to continue activities I thought I’d lost. Kent and I want to try as many as we can.”
