What people love about camino de santiago tours.

Our guide got us safely to Santiago which was a big part of his job. We had a nice group of people on our tour. The leader had good recommendations for restaurants and city tours. However, the guide was very impatient with me when my backpack was missing, and I only found my pack due to my air tags. Gadventures was responsible for moving my pack during the day so I am not sure about the reason for the impatience.
Matched me with G tours. Everyone followed up, made changes as needed & worked well together.
Loved every step. Great experience with excellent guide, hotels, restaurants and of course, the spectacular Camino. I really appreciate the way the tour started before the last 100 km (where there are lots of people) because we trekked through beautiful quiet villages, long stretches of nature and it was a chance to feel like a real pilgrim with plenty of contemplative time, challenging hills to dig deep inside.

"Great tour. Good transfers and accommodations. Suggest that breakfast be served earlier at ALL hotels and no later than 7 AM since we need to START walking no later than 7:30 AM to cover the long distances. Taxis also need to show up on time. Also do some research and let clients know where public laundrys are located near hotels. These suggestions would make your tour even better.

Walk the Camino de Santiago

7 days | embark on europe’s greatest pilgrimage.

Group hike of pilgrims walking the Camino de Santiago, Spain

Whether you’re looking for a cultural odyssey, physical challenge, religious pilgrimage or to meet interesting travel companions, walking the Camino de Santiago is sure to be a life-affirming and personally enriching adventure. Over seven days, undertake a journey along the final 100km of Spain’s Camino de Santiago, travelling with a small group of likeminded travellers and a local leader to add a deeper layer to your discoveries. Follow in the footsteps of ancient pilgrims as you walk through beautiful Galician countryside, passing quaint hamlets, roman ruins and stilted horreos. The feeling of arriving at the finishing point in Santiago de Compostela simply can’t be beat.

Trip overview

  • Walk the final 100km of the iconic Camino de Santiago with a local leader to provide historical context and add a deeper layer of understanding to your discoveries.
  • Uncover scenes of the real Galicia as you walk through traditional countryside, quaint hamlets, ancient bridges, roman ruins and beautifully preserved horreos on stilts.
  • Fuel your journey with unique Galician specialties, including traditional polbo a feira octopus in Melide and world-renowned cheese in Arzua.
  • Take a load off – literally! Your luggage will be transferred between your accommodation each day, meaning you’ll only have to carry a day pack, and your luggage will be waiting at your hotel.
  • Take a sip of Galicia’s Celtic history as your leader shows you how to make the traditional and mythical Queimada drink – prepare for a fiery show!
  • Feel an unbeatable sense of accomplishment as you complete your journey in the fascinating ancient city of Santiago de Compostela and collect your Camino certificate.
  • By travelling on this trip, you’ll learn about our Intrepid Foundation partner, Open Arms. Donations help them safeguard the physical integrity and rights of migrant people in imminent danger who have fled their homes across the Mediterranean Sea. Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.
  • This trip involves plenty of walking and is best suited to travellers with a good level of mobility. Good footwear is a must.
  • There will be some long walking days and we recommend reading descriptions of all walks carefully. Your longest walking day is 29km, but there will be the option to take a taxi to shorten the walking distance.
  • During your trip you will visit numerous religious sites. You will need to bring clothes that cover the shoulders and knees. A light scarf is a good idea for covering shoulders and arms when it’s hot. Your leader will be able to advise when such clothing is necessary.
  • On this trip you must pack as lightly as possible because you will be expected to carry your own bag and although you won't be required to walk long distances with your luggage (max 30 minutes), we strongly recommend keeping the weight under 15kg / 33lb. Most travellers carry their luggage in a backpack, although an overnight bag with a shoulder strap would suffice if you travel lightly. Smaller bags or backpacks with wheels are convenient although we recommend your bag has carry straps to accommodate the cobbled streets, uneven surfaces, stairs and steps you are likely to encounter while carrying your luggage. You'll also need a day pack/bag to carry water and a camera etc for day trips.

Welcome to Spain! Your adventure begins in Sarria in the Galicia region of northwest Spain. This autonomous corner of the country has its own language, cuisine and culture, distinct from the rest of Spain, but is perhaps most famous for being the home of Santiago de Compostela, the finishing point of the Camino de Santiago. Over the next week you will be walking the final 100km of this iconic and world-renowned pilgrimage. A meeting will take place at 6pm this evening where you’ll meet up with your local leader and small group of fellow travellers joining you on your journey. After your meeting collect your 'Pilgrim's Passport' then perhaps head out to a local restaurant for your first foray into the exciting world of Galician cuisine.

  • Hotel (1 night)

There are no meals included on this day.

  • Santiago de Compostela - Pilgrim passport collection

Today is a gentle introduction to the Camino de Santiago – it’s all about finding your feet, so be sure to take your time and pause to enjoy your scenic surroundings. Have your pilgrim passport handy as you will be getting this stamped at least twice a day throughout your journey. Kicking off from Sarria, walk a mostly asphalt path through beautiful countryside, passing forests of chestnut and oak trees, small farms, villages and wheat fields. You may like to stop for a breather at the Santiago de Barbadelo or the church of San Fiz de Reimondez – your leader will be on hand to share historical facts and interesting tidbits about the highlights you pass on your journey. Some of the little farms you pass will be selling lovely fresh produce like jams, bread and cheeses – perfect snacks to keep you going! After around 4.5 hours of walking (excluding stops) finish up for the day in the delightful town of Portomarin. An excellent spot to recharge your batteries, the town features an inviting array of restaurants and lovely views of the Embalse de Belesar lake. When the town was flooded by the creation of the Belesar reservoir, they dismantled the town’s historic buildings and rebuilt them on higher ground, so they can still be admired today.

  • Camino de Santiago - Sarria to Portomarin guided walk

Today’s walking distance is 22km, taking approximately 5-6 hours (excluding stops).

Starting from Portomarin, much of today’s route is along a gravel path alongside the road with little traffic, often cutting through gorgeous Galician forests and fields. Walk through the rural Monterroso region and pass by the little villages of Gonzar, Ligonde and Castromaior – a slight detour from the latter will take you to the impressive Roman ruins of Castro de Castromaior. There will be stalls along the way selling fruit, snacks and cold drinks, plus plenty of places to stop for a sit-down meal or a coffee. Around halfway, climb a gradual hill to Sierra de Ligonde, followed by a gentle descent. Today’s walk wraps up in Palas de Rei, an interesting town dotted with historical buildings and Romanesque architecture. This evening, prepare for a real treat as you get up close and personal with one of Galicia’s most mystical and celebrated specialties. The Queimada, or “fire drink” has its roots in Galicia’s Celtic past, and is made with the liqueur oruju, lemon, and coffee beans, which is then set alight and said to ward off evil spirits. Not only is the result delicious, watching it come together is quite the show! Your leader will make this exciting drink for the group tonight, ensuring you won’t be bothered by any evil spirits for the rest of your journey!

  • Camino de Santiago - Portomarin to Palas de Rei guided walk
  • Castromaior - Roman ruins of Castro de Castromaior visit
  • Palas de Rei - Queimada drink preparation & tasting

Today’s walking distance is 25km, taking approximately 5-6 hours (excluding stops).

Get ready for your longest day on this stretch of the Camino de Santiago, covering the distance from Palas de Rei to Arzua. Today’s terrain is undulating asphalt, so prepare for some ups and downs. First, walk to the town of Melide – home to around 9000 people, this is one of the most populated spots on your journey. Melide is renowned for its fantastic food, specialising in polbo a feira, a flavoursome octopus dish. You and your group will gather together in Melide to tuck into a traditional polbo a feira lunch, which you may like to follow up with some melindres, mini glazed donuts popular in Melide. For those who wish to give their legs a rest, you’ll have the option to catch a taxi to Arzua, otherwise hit the road and continue the final stretch of today’s journey, crossing the Iso River and navigating a series of short but steep slopes. On arrival in Arzua, be sure to ask your leader about the revered cheese made in this region – definitely a must-try while here!

  • Camino de Santiago - Palas de Rei to Arzúa guided walk

Today’s walking distance is 29km, taking approximately 6-7 hours (excluding stops).

Depart Arzua and reach a split in the path, where the right follows the main road, and the left cuts through shady forest. As the saying goes, the road less travelled is often the most rewarding, so veer left and enjoy a day of peaceful strolling, mostly through endearing forests and past little villages and farms – this is some of the most wonderful scenery on the whole Camino de Santiago. There are plenty of cafes and restaurants along the way to stop and fuel up. As you draw closer to O Pedrouzo, your base for evening, pass by the Fountain of Santa Irene, the water from which was said to cure diseases of crops and illnesses of children.

  • Pension (1 night)
  • Camino de Santiago - Arzúa to O Pedrouzo guided walk

Today’s walking distance is 20km, taking approximately 5 hours (excluding stops).

Gear up for your final day of walking, conquering the leg between O Pedrouzo to Santiago de Compostela, with each step taking you closer to the awe-inspiring Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. Begin by walking through dense green forest – with no cars or houses around, you may like to take this time to quietly reflect on all you’ve achieved over the past week. Next, follow a long stretch of road between Lavacolla and Monte do Gozo, then swap out rural landscapes for urban as you walk the final 5km. Hear the sounds of Galician bagpipes welcoming you to the cathedral, marking the end of your journey along the Camino de Santiago, a truly massive accomplishment. Present your stamped pilgrim passport and receive your Camino certificate, proof that you have walked the 100km to Santiago de Compostela. If you arrive at the cathedral before noon, you can enter and participate in the pilgrims’ mass, where a list of all those who have collected their Camino certificates in the last 24 hours will be read aloud. The group will also pay a visit to the Museum of Pilgrimage to learn about the history of the Camino de Santiago and other places of pilgrimage across the world. This evening, why not treat yourself to a final dinner with the group in town – you’ve earned it!

  • Camino de Santiago - O Pedrouzo to Santiago de Compostela guided walk
  • Santiago de Compostela - Pilgrim's museum visit

With no activities planned for today and the walking done and dusted, your adventure comes to an end after breakfast this morning. If you’d like to extend your stay in Santiago de Compostela, just get in touch ahead of time and we’d be happy to arrange additional accommodation (subject to availability).

Keep reading to learn more and click on our range of Camino tours to learn more.

We have designed this luxury walking trip with families and groups of friends in mind, bringing together the very best the Camino has to offer into one carefully curated package. Walk the Camino has been designing a huge range of Caminos for people for over a decade, so you benefit from our deep knowledge on the Camino, but also our numerous local connections with accommodation, eateries, and other local vendors.

We offer a blend of charming boutique lodgings, wonderful dining (and wines), an impeccable bilingual host and guide, and so much more. We tailor daily Camino walks throughout the trip, along with a dedicated support vehicle. This luxury Camino is for discerning travellers looking for a special Camino journey to enjoy in good company. If you’re looking for something more… rugged, perhaps you like to consider our Classic French Way Full Camino or our Camino by Horseback .

You will find yourself immersed in the history, culture, and traditions of the Camino and the Galicia region of Spain. As you travel towards the Cathedral of St James you’ll experience the camaraderie of the Way, enjoy wonderful local cuisine and wine, discover some sacred places and share the common purpose of your fellow travellers all heading to Compostela.

You will walk exactly the same trail as all the other pilgrims and travellers, sharing the way and rubbing shoulders with people from all over the world. But you’ll be using our luxury vehicle and driver to shuttle you between hotel and trail as required. This allows you to decide each day how much walking you wish to do, perhaps have an early finish or simply take a day off to relax. Some hotels have spa facilities and all can arrange for therapists to attend.

On arrival in Santiago, you have a private tour of the medieval Casco Antiguo — the heart of the old city — where you visit the cathedral and collect your Compostela certificate. There will be a special celebratory dinner on the final evening. For any further information, please don’t hesitate to get in touch .

Highlights Along this Luxury Camino de Santiago

Santiago Old Town A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985, Galicia’s capital city Santiago de Compostela is the world-known destination of the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route. Around the Cathedral of Saint James of Compostela, a masterpiece of Romanesque art, the city boasts a picturesque old town worthy of one of Christianity’s greatest holy cities.

Galicia’s waters produce some of the best seafood and fish in the world. Its pastures support beef and dairy herds, so you will find delicious local cuts of meat and cheeses.

When it comes to filling your glass, Galicia produces wonderful reds and whites, fantastically refreshing beers and its signature liquor – Oruzo.

Food & Drink

Every town in the Camino has a variety of lively plazas with bars and restaurants, so there will be plenty of opportunities for you to enjoy the delicious Spanish gastronomy and the variety of world-famous Spanish wines.

This is an area that still preserves a traditional way of life. Galicia is the green corner of Spain and its lush meadows support many family-run dairy and beef farms. Galician cooking is simple and hearty, using mainly fresh local produce.

Those with a sweet tooth will love Tarta de Santiago, a type of almond cake dusted with sugar outlining the shape of the cross of Santiago. A gastronomic point – in Melide look out for the local speciality “Pulpo Gallego” – octopus – sprinkled with paprika and served with potatoes.

The wines, cheeses and seafood are all renowned Galician specialities. Unlike the red wine-producing rest of Spain, Galicia’s climate is better suited to whites. Albariño is a straw-coloured wine with a distinct peach flavour that’s now highly respected outside Spain and the perfect companion to fish and seafood.

July and August can get very hot.

The weather on the Camino will change slightly as you travel from the Pyrenees over to Galicia. The spring months of April and May tend to offer nice mild conditions for walking although the nights can be quite cold at this time of year and there can be quite a lot of rain in the region of Galicia at this time. The summer months of July and August can get very hot and humid. The autumn from late September through to October offers cooler temperatures again although daylight hours start to become less at this time. The region of Galicia in particular experiences higher rainfall than the rest of Spain so you should come prepared with waterproofs!

Your information pack has a detailed equipment list which includes standard hiking gear such as good hiking boots or shoes, lightweight clothes, waterproofs and a day pack.

Day 2: Arrive in Madrid (Tour Day: 2 miles | 3.2 kilometers | 4,500 steps)

Upon arrival in Madrid, you will collect your luggage in the baggage claim area, and continue to the Arrival’s Hall where you will be greeted by your driver. Transfer to your hotel. In the afternoon you will enjoy a short walking tour of Spain’s capital city. There we will celebrate Mass, followed by a tour of the Cathedral. Day 3: Madrid - Foncebadon - Iron Cross - O Cebreiro - Sarria (Walking Day: 2.8 miles | 4.5 kilometers | 6,500 steps)

This morning, you will enjoy breakfast and transfer to Sarria. Sarria is located in the northwest of Spain and is noted for being the entry point to the oriental side of the region, Galicia. Your transfer will end and you will begin on foot from Foncebadon. In the eleventh century, this village was a common resting place for pilgrims on El Camino due to its hospitals, hospice, and church. Currently, the structures that have served so many are now in ruins. While in Foncebadon, you will walk to view the “Iron Cross.” This Cross is a common pausing place for pilgrims as they leave a stone at the foot of the cross to symbolize a sin or burden that they are leaving behind. Your tour continues as you leave your burdens behind and continue onward to the village nestled in the mountains, O Cebreiro. Many pilgrims pause at this site due to the Eucharistic Miracle that occurred in the year 1300. Additionally, be sure to have your cameras ready as this village is suspended 1,300 meters in the air and provides a breathtaking panoramic view. Your first walking day culminates with a delicious meal and an overnight in Sarria.

Day 4: Sarria - Portomarin (Walking Day: 15 miles | 23.5 kilometers | 35,000 steps)

Today is the day that your walking pilgrimage (El Camino) to Santiago de Compostela officially begins! Pick up your Pilgrim Passport and set out for Portomarín. With the guidance of Our Lord, and through the spirit of St. James the apostle, you will become an authentic pilgrim by journeying along the physical road, as well as, the spiritual one. Your first official day of walking will culminate in Portomarin. This town dates back to the Roman Ages and was an important halt along the route in the Middle Ages. Due to the creation of a dam in 1962, the Old Portomarin is currently underneath the Mino River. As a result of the dam creation, many of the old buildings were moved, brick by brick. Among these buildings is the Church of St. John of Jerusalem. In Medieval Times, this church was strategically set along the route of El Camino in order to protect the tomb of Santiago. At Portomarin, you will enjoy dinner followed by an overnight.

Day 5: Portomarin - Palas de Rei (Walking Day: 16 miles | 25 kilometers | 37,500 steps)

This morning, you will enjoy breakfast at your hotel and journey from Portomarin, through the woods to the Palas de Rei. This was a noteworthy town in the Middle Ages, as it contained a Royal Hospital and the church of St. Tirso. As the rugged walk continues, you will continue through fields, forests, and granaries. Additionally, you will see a prominent characteristic of Galician Landscape, Los Cruceiros. These wayside crosses depict Christ and the Virgin Mary. Dinner and enjoy a restful overnight in Arzua.

el camino de santiago tours

Day 6: Palas de Rei - Arzua (Walking Day: 18.2 miles | 29 kilometers | 44,000 steps)

Breakfast will be served at your hotel. Your pilgrimage continues as you will travel from Palas de Rei to the bustling small town of Arzua. Before arriving in Arzua, your group will stop at Melide. This town is a crucial point of El Camino because it is where the French and Oviedo routes converge. Upon arrival in Melide, you will notice the old roads that date back to the fourteenth century, which are some of the oldest in the region of Galicia. After lunch, you will leave the Lugo province and enter into the province of A Coruna. As your group continues to Arzua, you will cross the beautiful, medieval bridge over the Iso River to Ribadiso. Following your visit to this Chapel, your day will culminate with the arrival in Arzua, where you will enjoy dinner and an overnight.

el camino de santiago tours

Day 7: Arzua (Rest Day: 4.5 miles | 7.2 kilometers | 10,500 steps)

Just like God rested on the seventh day, we will take a break. After Mass, spend time reflecting on your journey so far and enjoy the day in carefree timelessness. Dinner and overnight in Arzúa.

Day 8: Arzua - Arca de O Pino (Walking Day: 14.2 miles | 22.8 kilometers | 33,000 steps)

Your journey is almost over as you walk to the largest community before Santiago, Arca de O Pino! Upon walking this route, you will immerse yourselves in the fragrant eucalyptus groves and experience the breathtaking scenery. At a point throughout your walk, you will stop and enjoy a picnic lunch. Following lunch, you will continue your journey and arrive in Arca de O Pino. As you explore this village, you will notice joy etched on the faces of the pilgrims. Although they have traveled a long distance, they are not weary. Following this intimate embrace, you will descend into the crypt where the Patron Saint of Pilgrims’ relics is kept. Following your visit, you will enjoy free time for lunch on own before your sightseeing tour of the city. Some stops on your tour include the Obradoiro Square, Fonseca Palace, Gelmirez Palace, Franco Street, and much more. Home > Servicios > Transfer Service on The Camino de Santiago

If you are coming to Galicia or any other location in Spain or Portugal to do the Camino de Santiago and you need to get from the Airport, Train Station, etc. to the starting point of the Camino, you can add this Transfer Service to the Starting Point of the Camino in your travel package.

This is a private transfer service. For both independent travelers and groups. In Galiwonders we will adapt the type of vehicle to the number of people in the reservation (car, van, minibus, bus…) and to the needs of luggage transport, so that you can travel comfortably.

Note: This service must be contracted in a combined travel package (accommodation, transportation, per diem, etc). In Galiwonders we do not offer the transfer service to the starting point of the Camino de Santiago independently.

Book your transfer to the starting point of the Camino de Santiago

At Galiwonders we work directly with private transport companies and local drivers selecting the best services for you, ensuring that your Camino de Santiago starts in the best possible way.

We organize your transfer to the starting point of the Camino from any location in Galicia, Spain, Portugal or France. At airports, train stations, bus stations or city hotels. To any starting point of the Camino de Santiago: Saint Jean de Pied de Port, Roncesvalles, Irún, Burgos, Oviedo, Ponferrada, León, Sarria, O Cebreiro, O Porto, Tui, Baiona, etc.

A chauffeur with a private vehicle will pick you and the people of the reservation at the place and time indicated to take you to the starting point of the Camino de Santiago.

Booking a private transfer on the Camino de Santiago

Our top priority is to make the Camino de Santiago an unforgettable experience for you. We know that much of this experience depends on the logistics and how your trip starts or ends. That’s why the comfort of arriving at the airport without worries is an essential part of a good start. This is where an efficient and reliable transfer service to the starting point of the Camino makes all the difference.

The Camino de Santiago has become so popular that more than 400,000 pilgrims walk the Camino de Santiago each year. That’s why having a pre-booked transfer to the starting point of the Camino will ensure that you start your experience off on the right foot.

Benefits of Galiwonders Transportation Services

By including the transfer service in your travel package, a professional driver will meet you at the agreed place and time and help you with your luggage, ensuring a smooth journey to your destination. This is especially appreciated if this is your first time doing the Camino de Santiago, if you have language difficulties or if you are simply looking for the convenience of a hassle-free service.

Whether you are traveling alone or in a group, there are options available to suit all types of requirements and budgets. At Galiwonders we will take care of booking a vehicle that suits the number of travelers and your needs.

Tranquility and Efficiency on the Road to Santiago

Don’t leave your arrival at the starting point of the Camino de Santiago to chance. Opt for the peace of mind and efficiency that comes with having these pre-booked transfer services. Make your travel experience relaxed and stress-free, focusing on what really matters: enjoying your amazing trip to the Camino de Santiago.

Planning your Camino de Santiago will be easy

Whatever your choice of transportation in Santiago de Compostela, be sure to plan your route and book your services in advance, especially if you are traveling in high season. Enjoy the beauty and charm of the Camino de Santiago with the peace of mind that your transportation is secured with options tailored to your preferences.

Transportation options on the Camino de Santiago

Santiago de Compostela, the celebrated city in northwestern Spain, is known not only for its iconic cathedral and as the final destination on the Camino de Santiago, but also for the diversity of transportation options it offers travelers who wish to explore the city in comfort and efficiency. When you land at Santiago de Compostela Airport (SCQ), located about 12 kilometers from the city, you will find several alternatives to move to the city center or to any point in the region.

Private Transfer

One of the most convenient options is to book a private transfer or chauffeur service in your travel package. This service guarantees you will be met when you arrive at the pick-up point and a hassle-free and comfortable ride to your destination. This type of transportation is undoubtedly the most convenient and efficient for pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago.

You can be sure that there will be a vehicle waiting for you, no matter the time or day. In addition, the fare is fixed, so there will be no surprises in terms of price.

Public Transportation

For those looking for a more economical option, bus services connect the airport to the bus station, the city center or other key stops. Cabs are also available 24 hours a day and represent a fast alternative, albeit at a higher cost than the bus. However, keep in mind that the Camino de Santiago runs through rural areas that cannot always be reached directly by public transport. Thus having to combine public transport with private transport. With the logistical complications that this may entail.

In addition to public transport and cabs, you can opt for a car rental service, which will give you more freedom to explore the region of Galicia at your own pace.

More Galiwonders services for pilgrim transfers in Galicia

In addition to the private transfer services to the starting point of the Camino, in our travel packages you can include more transportation services. Write to us if you want more information about some of these services:

Ensure your bike is in top condition before departure – check your tires, brakes, gears, lights, and anything else that could break during your trip. This will ensure that your bike is safe and sound throughout the journey.

Picking the route

The Camino de Santiago offers several routes for cyclists. The French Way is the most popular, known for its well-marked paths and great scenery. The Northern Way offers stunning coastal views, but is more challenging due to its common hills. The Camino Portuguese coastal route provides a milder climate and a mix of coastal scenery. Each route varies in distance and difficulty, catering to different needs and fitness levels. So, do your research and choose the best route for your interests.

Cycling the Camino allows you to bring slightly more stuff than when walking, as the weight will not be quite as obvious. However, packing smart is important, and you still want to make your bike as light as possible.

Essential items will include lightweight clothing (also waterproof, depending on the time of year), navigation system (such as a map or GPS device), a basic first aid kit, and some snacks for energy. Of course, you will also have to bring extra items for your bike, such as a simple repair kit and spare parts in case of breakages. Don’t forget to also bring your helmet and reflectors for safety.

Accommodation options

Along the route, you’ll find various accommodation options, including hostels and hotels. Some are more budget-friendly, while others are more high-end. Whichever option is more suited for you, try and book them well in advance, as they get busy during the peak season. Double-check that your chosen hotel will have a safe spot for your bike to avoid any unwanted surprises.

Navigating the route If you are cycling an official Camino de Santiago route, then you can be certain that it will have direction signs along the way. Before your trip, familiarise yourself with these symbols and the route itself. If you are still not sure, use a GPS or an app on your phone to guide your way. Try and stick to the main path, as shortcuts could potentially lead to dead-ends.

Health and safety tips

Hydration and food will be one of your main worries. The more popular routes have lots of services along the way, where you can stop by for a meal, but you should not rely on them completely. Always carry your own water and snacks to keep your energy levels up. Additionally, if you are cycling Camino solo, make sure someone always knows about your whereabouts. You should also have a local emergency contact ready in case of any accidents.

Cycling the Camino de Santiago is a rewarding adventure and a fun physical challenge. Enjoy the ride!

Hi, My husband, age 70, and a group of mainly 50 years up men, just finished a partial Camino del Norte. This was their schedule: ( Caridad) to Santiago in 9 straight days : 15, 21, 25, 18, 15, 15, 15, 6 miles a day. It was so remote they saw very few people, and passed through villages so small they often had to skip lunch. 2 sprained ankles and one case of tendonitis. What do you think of this itinerary? To me, it seemed a poor choice of route for older guys who are not hikers. They ended up with 3 full days in Santiago, but never had time to check out any of the places they stayed along they stayed along the way. Theyb would get late starts and twice were still walking at midnight! A travel agent was the leader. He would pick expensive places to eat that involved walking 20 minutes to get there! Never any foot rest. To me, it’s an insane schedule. Your thoughts?

Well, I'll take the plunge. They started just before the Norte turns inland, which denies views of the coast. As I recall the accommodations get somewhat sparser, but by no means are they so spread out that I couldn't accomplish them. But I did do these things: I started early each day, as early as I could so as to not walk in the dark. I prebooked so that I was in the evenings town by four at the latest. Plenty have, but I never walked in the dark. I was not very picky about where I ate, but found plenty of places to eat. The longest trek was the day I merged with the Frances, and I was there by mid day. Seems to me, theirs was a bit of bad planning. Not so much the Camino itself but timing and choices. I was 64 when I walked from Irun and got not even a blister. Not everyone has my good luck.

How to Successfully Prepare for Your Camino

Sounds like you (and presumably your husband) were dissatisfied and are looking for supporting opinions. What you tell us is not really enough to make a clear case. You refer to the leader being a travel agent. Are you saying that the group paid him for a service that wasn't delivered satisfactorily? Since we don't know what the agreement was, it is hard to pass judgement. Yes, some of the distances were longer than I would choose, but many people walk them. What was the original plan, and what information or guidance was provided in advance? I have no idea why they would have been walking until midnight. That could only happen if they waited until noon or later to start a long day. Why was that, and what reasoning or options were given at the time? Was the leader walking with them? Why didn't they start out earlier? I have certainly missed lunch occasionally on the Camino, but have always carried something to eat. Did the leader commit to arranging a mid-day meal? The complaint about tour organizers booking hotels or restaurants too far from the Camino is something I've heard before. A 20 minute walk to a restaurant is not insane, but closer would be nice after a long day. It is very hard to comment without knowing what the arrangements/commitments were.

I hadn't bothered to comment because of the lack of detail you provide, which is covered nicely by @C clearly . I basically agree with pretty much everything she's written, without far more specific information there's not a lot we can comment on. The distances covered are pretty standard for that end of the Camino Norte. And 20 minutes to a restaurant in some towns is not at all unreasonable. Presumably you were given information as to staging etc before signing up for this, if not I'm surprised you didn't ask.

Just walked the Norte, including that section. There are a few stages where you must walk that long, especially in the current “off season” before summer when more accommodations are open. Not sure why they’d walk until midnight unless they are taking really long meals, starting at noon, or walking very very slowly. Overall (and based on the limited info provided), those distances are not outrageous for that area. In the future, consider the itinerary and one’s personal ability before purchasing a tour service like that.

I would add that the experience might have been totally unacceptable, and the leader incompetent. You mention some clues, and there are undoubtedly some bad group organizers. However, the information is very incomplete and third hand. I am very reluctant to jump to any conclusion, especially a trashing, without hearing both sides. For more forum discussion of "travel-agencies/groups" see the tag of the same name that I've added under the title of this thread.

How did they pick this route? Why did they have a group guide? When planning your own Camino you can make more choices on your own. We are 62 and 73 and rarely walk long distances (usually 10 or 12 miles per day), but we select routes which accommodate our choices. We rarely make reservations, carry our own packs most days, and cook for ourselves often. This does not sound like the kind of Camino your husband experienced so it might not be appropriate for comparison You can leave a bad review for guide if you are not satisfied.

Hello, Thanks for your responses. The group was a men’s group from church. When my husband first talked about going he said their leader was someone who had done El Camino many times, and I just thought he was a member of the group. He actually belongs to a different parish and is a travel agent. (Second career) The priest chose him. I’m not sure when they saw the itinerary but I could see no one questioning it because they trusted their guide. To prepare they did one 20 mile walk and many many 10-12 miles. My husband hired a personal trainer to build up his leg muscles. One day they knew they wouldn’t leave until noon because Fr was concelebrating Mass. But that was a 21 mike hike day, which makes no sense to me ( all the masses were planned in advance). The other midnight day was rain and slow walking due to it, and someone getting hurt. To me it seems a poor choice of route and a not well planned itinerary. My husband is not the type to complain, I don’t think any of them are. They walked as pilgrims and brought prayer intentions from the parish. It makes me sad that they started past the most scenic part. I thought the pictures they sent were nice, but nothing to write home about. I’m more upset than he is. I love to plan. We have traveled extensively both domestically and in Europe and Central America. I have never used an agent, in fact I didn’t even know that was still a thing. We move around when we are in a country, there’s lots of coordinating train schedules, reservations and the like. Again, just wondering if I am justified in my thoughts on the trip. The guide is going again in a few weeks and I think someone should post their experience- just the facts, so people know what it’s like.

Most of the men are retired, there were a few students, so time of trip wasn’t an issue. My husband said they have all forgiven the leader for his mistakes and a few other issues. yes, they are thrilled to have completed it, and some even had their prayers answered along the way. The leader is next taking college kids on El Camino Portugués so it should be fine. Since they are all ok with things now, I will be too.
