While there are plenty of awesome things to do in Calgary , sometimes you just want to get out and see more of the province. Luckily, Calgary has the best location in Alberta. With the Canadian Rockies to the West, the Canadian badlands to the east, and both the prairies and the foothills on its doorstep, there’s no short of fun day trips from Calgary. Whether you’re looking to go horseback riding, white water rafting, skiing, hiking, or almost anything else you can think of, Calgary is a great place to be based.

In this Alberta travel guide, we’re going to share the best day trips from Calgary, which can easily be transformed into multi-day adventures if you have more time. There are lots of places you can choose from, and a range of both small and big towns, all offering their own unique charms and attractions.

Let’s get into it.

Table of Contents

Places To Visit Near Calgary By Car

Calgary is quite a central destination, making it an accessible place to reach many other amazing towns, cities, villages, and parks in the surrounding areas. While some popular areas such as Banff have tours, most of these destinations require your own vehicle. However, all of the places listed here are less than three hours away from Calgary, with many of them less than two hours.

Depending on what you’re most eager to see and do, this list should showcase at least one spot that is perfect for you. Here’s an extensive list of places to see around Calgary.

Top Calgary Day Trips to the West

It’s no secret that the most famous place to visit around Calgary is the Rocky Mountains. Banff National Park is just over an hour away and is one of the most beautiful places in the world. There’s also the Kananaskis, which is even closer and typically quieter than its big brother next door.

Drive Time: The Kananaskis is about an hour from Calgary, but it depends on how far you go.

The Kananaskis was once a local secret, but keeping a secret is no easy task when the area is full of towering mountain peaks, gorgeous crystal-clear lakes, and a plethora of outdoor adventures. There are a number of places to access the Kananasnkis including Highway 40 near Canmore as well as access points just off the Cowboy Trail and Turner Valley such as highway 546 and highway 540.

Also known as K-country, this is one of the best places to spot wildlife such as bears and bighorn sheep as well as indulge in the pristine mountain wilderness. It’s home to some incredible hiking opportunities in the summer but is also popular in the winter for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. In fact, you can even go downhill skiing at Nakiska Ski Area, which was home to the 1988 Winter Olympics.

One of our favourite places to go camping is at Spray Lakes West Campground, which is in the Kananaskis but there are also fancier options for accommodation, such as Mt Engadine Lodge and the Kananaskis Lodge, which is home to a Nordic Spa.

Canmore is one of the most popular day trips from Calgary.

Drive Time: Canmore is less than an hour’s drive from west Calgary.

There are so many trails to hike but one of our favourites is Ha Ling Peak, which can be a difficult climb but also a very busy spot on weekends. This is because it’s so close to the town but offers the chance to reach a mountain summit for mind-blowing views of the Canadian Rockies.

Once known as a quiet enclave of locals next to world-famous Banff, that is no longer the case. It was only a matter of time before Canmore, which is just 20 minutes from Banff, became as popular as it is now. It’s surrounded by beautiful mountain peaks and has a charming downtown core that’s popular with locals and visitors alike. You’ll find a seemingly endless network of hiking trails, as well as cave tours, shops, restaurants, and hotels. In the winter, it’s also home to epic cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and nearby downhill skiing and snowboarding.

Popular things to do :

  • Take a helicopter ride
  • Rock climbing
  • Enjoy a walking tour of the town
  • Wilderness walking

Banff in the Winter - Day Trips from Calgary

Skiing in Banff is incredibly popular during the winter months as it’s home to three world-class ski resorts, as well as some beautiful winter hikes, such as Johnston Canyon. For those interested in a foodie experience, the most popular of them all is Fairmont’s Eat the Castle tour .

Frank Slide Interpretive Centre - Day Trips from Calgary

Crowsnest Pass

Distance from Calgary : 2.5 hours.

Most people think of the Canadian Rockies as being west of Calgary but they’re also south of Calgary! Head south on Highway 2 or opt for Highway 22 (Cowboy Trail) for a more scenic route to the beautiful Crowsnest Pass. Although this can certainly be done as a long day trip (similar to Lake Louise), we always recommend spending a night to really make use of your time. After all, the Crowsnest Pass is one of the most beautiful regions in Alberta and is home to incredible hiking opportunities, golfing, historic sites, and the jaw-dropping Frank Slide. This area has a very tragic past and we highly recommend spending a couple of hours at Frank Slide as well as the nearby Crowsnest Museum.

  • Visit Lundbrek Falls and Leitch Collieries Provincial Historic Site
  • Visit the Frank Slide Interpretive Centre
  • Tour the historic streets of Coleman
  • Climb to the summit of Turtle Mountain

Distance from Calgary : 2 hours.

This UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the province’s great indigenous treasures and one of the world’s biggest, oldest, and best-preserved buffalo jumps. What makes Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump extra special is the wonderful interpretive centre where you can learn all about this site, watch a reenactment video, and learn about the indigenous tribes that call this place home. The exhibition site details how the Blackfoot Bands used the area for buffalo hunting and they offer a number of tours, including the chance to reenact the buffalo hunt yourself!

Castle Provincial Park

Distance from Calgary: 2.5 hours.

Alberta’s newest provincial park is located just south of Pincher Creek and offers stunning scenery without all the crowds. You’ll find lots of hiking and mountain biking trails in Castle Provincial Park , as well as lakes and campgrounds. In addition, just outside the park is Castle Mountain Resort, one of the top ski resorts in the province. While the resort is most famous for its powder and steep runs, they also have a number of popular hikes in the summer.

Horsethief Canyon, Drumheller Alberta

Top Calgary Day Trips to the East

East of Calgary is what makes Alberta even more unique. Not only will you find mountains to the west and prairies to the north and south, but you’ll also find badlands to the east! Aspen Crossing Alberta

Aspen Crossing and Vulcan

Distance from Calgary : 1 hr 30 min drive or less.

Located in the ultra-small town of Mossleigh is one of the most popular attractions near Calgary. Aspen Crossing offers a train-themed experience, complete with an RV park, camping, and a truly unique opportunity to spend the night in a Caboose cabin. The most popular activity here is taking a scenic train ride through the prairies with options to experience things like a Cowboy Shootout, a Wine and Cheese event, Brunch, or even the Polar Express during the Christmas season. In addition, you’ll find one of the few remaining places in Alberta where there’s a trio of grain elevators still standing.

Now, if you’ve made it this far, you should continue on to the town of Vulcan, especially if you’re a fan of the TV series Star Trek. In fact, if you’re a fan of the show, the town of Vulcan is likely #1 on your bucket list. Located just 25-minutes from Mossleigh is a statue of the Star Trek Enterprise, murals of the Star Trek doctors, and even a ‘transporter’ to get you back to the Star Fleet. Even Leonard Nimoy visited in 2010!

Want to make it even more special? Consider visiting during the annual Spock Days, a fun family festival featuring a Star Trek-themed parade, soapbox derby, beer gardens and fireworks.

Great ideas. Are you excluding Waterton since you just need more time than you have in a day? It’s very reachable from Calgary.

August 17, 2021 at 12:08 pm

That’s a good point. It’s about the same distance as Lake Louise. We’ll add it 🙂

14 Absolute Best Day Trips from Calgary Alberta

Love it? Share it!

Calgary is one of our favorite cities in Canada. We live in Edmonton, but Calgary calls us every weekend, and their downtown city vibes, food, and quick access to the Rocky Mountains are just hard to beat in Alberta . The city is also a great base to explore more of our province, and so we thought of compiling a list of our favorite and absolute best day trips from Calgary.

Many of these day trips are UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Alberta!

Getting to Calgary, where to stay, and transportation for Calgary day trips

Calgary is located in Alberta and it is the largest city in the province. If you are flying to Calgary, you will touch down at YYC airport. From the airport, you can easily get a car rental, or shuttle buses to your hotel, or connect to nearby towns via Red Arrow buses (buses available from the airport too).

If you are driving to Calgary from Vancouver British Columbia the roads are well connected and you will be using Highway 1 to get there. If driving within the province of Alberta (including a 3-hour drive from Edmonton) takes you via Highway 2 or Queen Elizabeth Highway.

We have traveled all throughout the year (summers and winters), and it has been fine. However, we recommend adding extra travel/driving hours in the winter depending on the weather and road conditions. As always, use precaution while driving in winters.

Calgary day trips: View from Calgary Tower

We love staying near the airport and in the downtown Calgary area. Here are our top three hotels for your stay,

  • Hampton Inn Calgary Airport: Our favorite hotel in Calgary airport. Big, clean rooms with free parking, breakfast, and wifi. Book your stay here
  • Sheraton Hotel Eau Claire: This is a 4-star hotel, located in downtown Calgary. It offers world-class suites (+ downtown views). Great location for city exploration. Check out nightly room rates for Sheraton
  • Fairmont Palliser Hotel: Vintage 5-star hotel, the Fairmont Palliser is guaranteed to give you a delightful and memorable stay. Dine at their Hawthorn dining room, and get pampered with their spa services. Amazing location (you can walk down to various attractions from here).  Check rates and availability here

Cochrane Alberta

Cochrane makes for an easy day trip from Calgary. We love embarking on this route to the Canadian Rockies , and during winters we love to hang out at the Ghost Reservoir Provincial Recreation Area.

In wintertime, the reservoir is completely frozen and you can skate here for free. Depending on the season and lake conditions, you can also go on ice fishing here. During summers, you can spend some time at the Ghost Lake area, and take in the views or go on a quick stroll.

Glenbow Ranch Provincial Park is a must visit on a day trip. This park is only open for day-use; and no overnight camping is allowed. Glenbow Ranch is a sprawling area and it is your answer to stunning landscapes and views from here, are every photographer’s delight. The site also preserves historical resources along the Bow River.

Big Hill Springs is another provincial park located just north of Cochrane. This park is sprinkled with a large spring and a series of small waterfalls that flow over rocky terraces. The entire area is covered with lush greenery and is also home to a historic fish hatchery.

If you prefer leisurely time outdoors, you can embark on walking/biking trails in the Riverfront area or head to the Yamnuska Wolfdog Sanctuary. In Cochrane, you can also book ATV tours via Hidden Trails Adventures.

Kananaskis Country

Distance from Calgary: 1 hour one way

Kananaskis Country Day trips from Calgary

Kananaskis Country makes for a great Calgary day trip option. It is also a nice alternative to Banff , so expect lovely mountain views, tons of hiking and outdoor activities, and best of all a Nordic Spa to pamper yourself!

Kananaskis Country is big, but on a day trip, you can definitely embark on a short hike and then soak in and relax at the Spa. There are quite a few spa packages to choose from, including massage and rejuvenation sessions.

Kananaskis is a nature lover’s paradise. Enjoy paddling on Lower Kananaskis Lake or Elbow River. Opt for a horseback riding tour, or embark on any one of the following hikes – Mount Yamnuska (4 – 6 hours, or turnaround at 1 hour one way), the Upper Kananaskis Lake Loop (5 hours), Three Isle Lake Trail (3 hours one way start early for this hike), or easy Grotto Canyon Hike.

We prefer to just relax and hang out in the various scenic parks and sites in Kananaskis. On a day trip, we stop in Canmore for lunch, or at the Forte restaurant in the Kananaskis Mountain Lodge.

easy travel calgary

We LOVE Canmore. This is one little town that always brings in great memories. We visited Canmore as a day trip from Calgary in 2010, when we were road tripping from Saskatchewan. At that time, Canmore was not as well known as it is today. But its spirit and beauty have stayed the same.

On a day trip, we like to wander the downtown or main town centre area of Canmore, checking out art galleries, walking trails like the Policeman’s Creek, Big Head Sculpture, NWP Barracks, and relishing delicious food and amazing mountain views. You can definitely add the Canmore Cave tour (Rat’s Nest) on a day trip, just ensure you book it ahead of time.

Canmore Policemen's Creek

Canmore is a great option for a romantic weekend trip too. A 2-3 day trip will allow you to go on longer hikes (such as the Grassi Lakes Hike), or skiing at the Nordic Provincial Park in winter.

Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump, Fort Macleod

Head Smashed Buffalo Jump on a day trip from Calgary Canada

Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump is a buffalo jump located about 18 kilometres west of Fort Macleod. This site was used for over 5,500 years by Indigenous Peoples to kill buffaloes by driving them off the cliff. The cliff is about 36 foot high.

This interesting attraction is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is also our National Historic Site. Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump lost its significance when the Europeans established themselves in the province.

In the 20th century, an Elder of the Piikani Nation took the work for restoring this site, and due to his efforts we can explore the Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump today.

In the fall, there is a Harvest Festival which is worth visiting. This festival showcases the Blackfoot culture and is a great opportunity to learn about them. Note: This site is currently closed: October 2020, check updates here

Longview is a cute little town in Alberta. It is an entry gate to the Kananaskis Provincial Park, and is accessible along the Cowboy Trail. The town is one of a kind with cowboy themed restaurants and gourmet cafes, galleries and the star –  Bar U Ranch National Historic Site.

Bar U Ranch is located south of town and it showcases historical information in a unique way through period eateries and galleries. You must visit this historic site if you are a cowboy fan.

Imagine riding on a wagon (pulled by Percheron horses) and ‘experiencing’ life as a cowboy from the 1800s. Learn about old-style ranching ways, visit hundreds of year old barns, and see cattle, saddle horses, and other farm animals.

Take time to explore the trails and dirt roads to see the countryside, as this is one of the finest Prairie experiences in Alberta!

Aspen Crossing

Aspen Crossing is a fun day trip from Calgary. Located in Mossleigh, Aspen Crossing is known for the last of the CPR trains that passed through the stunning Prairies landscape.

The trains are a unique tourist attraction and sort of a heritage treasure. This attraction was created out of the left off rail compartments. Today a visitor can embark on a 3 hour tour through the town and enjoy the beautiful scenery. The Prairie landscape looks serene with grain elevators sprinkled everywhere.

Near the train station, you can eat, hang out and play in the countryside. In the winters, you can ride the special, “Polar Express” and experience a train ride to the North Pole! Check out their cool train rides like the Terror Train, Prairie Train. View tour schedules here

Sylvan Lake

Distance from Calgary: 1 hour 30 minutes one way

Sylvan Lake best day trips from Calgary Alberta

Sylvan Lake is a nice outdoor day trip option from Calgary and Edmonton, it is sort of mid way between the 2 cities. Sylvan Lake was on my list for the pretty lighthouse and the lake views.

But don’t worry there are plenty of things to do here. Start with water activities – and this doesn’t have to include the usual swimming, beachside time with kids, you can actually book water-jet adventures, and have a blast at the Sylvan Lake Aqua Splash.

Near the lake is the lighthouse; and this particular one was built to replace the original lighthouse. In 2013, the Sylvan Lake Rotary Club undertook the project and built this iconic landmark in the town. Image how beautiful it looks in the evening – these are perfect sunset goals!

If you are not into water activities and the lake, you can visit a farmers market or go golfing at the Sylvan Lake Golf and Country Club or Meadowlands.

Sylvan Lake is home to many festivals including Jazz At the Lake Fest (summer), 1913 Days and Sylvan Lake Winterfest (winter).

Fish Creek Provincial Park

Distance from Calgary: 20 minutes one way

Fish Creek Provincial Park is located in southern Calgary. There are quite a few activities to enjoy in this provincial park that can easily occupy an entire day.

Fish Creek Provincial Park is perfect all year round. In the summer time, you can spend a day hiking, swimming, enjoying a picnic, birdwatching, or strolling at their many walking paths. The park is free to enter and explore (except for the Sikome Lake beach area).

In the winter, a visit to the park is a must for snowshoeing and winter hiking. The Winter Carnival festival takes place here!

Bragg Creek Provincial Park

Distance from Calgary: 45 minutes one way

Forget me not Pond Bragg Creek

Bragg Creek Provincial is a nice and easy day trip from Calgary. One way day tour takes about 45 minutes, and you have the entire day to explore the little town and the park. The Elbow Falls are the most popular attraction near the park.

Visit the Elbow Falls area, and go on a quick stroll or walk the interpretive trail. This trail is wheelchair and stroller friendly. Near the falls is the Ellen Bill day use area where you can hang out, picnic and enjoy a nice afternoon while listening to the gushing sound of the Elbow River.

From golfing, biking to ATV tours, the terrain in and around Bragg Creek Provincial Park will delight you! READ : Things to do in Bragg Creek

Banff National Park

View of Banff town - Alberta towns

My absolute favorite place in Canada, oh Banff! We are pros in embarking on day trips to Banff from Calgary especially during high peak season as accommodation in Banff is crazy! And sometimes after finishing a work week, we run to the mountains on a Saturday and then head back to Calgary (and then home the next day to Edmonton).

When you are visiting on a day trip, you really can’t see it all, you have to prioritize. We will share 4 options for day trip itineraries to help you out

Banff Gondola Views

  • Option 1 is to stick to Banff town for a day trip. You can explore the Banff Avenue, get on the Sulphur Mountain Gondola, check out Bow Falls and finish the day at the Cascade Gardens
  • Option 2, explore Banff Avenue and then embark on a short hike near Cave and Basin (Marsh Loop – 1 hour round trip or Sundance Canyon – 3 hour round trip).
  • Not into hiking? Switch that for canoeing at the Vermillion Lakes. READ : How to spend 3 days in Banff itinerary
  • Option 4 is for those who like to drive around and drool at mountains (and don’t want to get out of the car, that’s me sometimes!). Enjoy a drive from Banff town to Two Jack Lake and then Lake Minnewanka Loop. If you have time on your hands, opt for the Minnewanka Lake cruise. We also included Moraine Lake on this drive, and we reached there by evening to beat the rush (on a day of lakes itinerary)!

Lake Louise

Distance from Calgary: 2 hours one way

Lake Louise views

Located inside Banff National Park is the beautiful hamlet of Lake Louise. On a day trip, you must head straight to Lake Louise and stay there for the day to maximize sightseeing (don’t add Banff or Yoho National Park to the itinerary).

At the Lake, you can go canoeing, hike the Lake Agnes trail to reach the teahouse at 2134 metres.

Lake louise short hikes in winter

During winters in Lake Louise , enjoy ice skating in a natural rink surrounded by magnificent mountain views. There are indoor skating options at the Fairmont Chateau hotel. Fairmont Chateau hotel is a nice place for a romantic coffee date or to enjoy afternoon high tea.

Lake Louise centre area is open all year round, and you can eat there, and buy candies and souvenirs.

Distance from Calgary: 1 hr 30  minutes one way

Red Deer is mid way between Calgary and Edmonton, and this is our coffee break stop on our road trips. The city is definitely intriguing. The Alberta Sports Hall of Fame & Museum caught our attention and on your day trip you can pay a quick visit to check out the sporting achievements from the province.

The Red Deer Museum + Art Gallery is a must visit to learn about the city’s history, and the best part is that the museum has a large collection of First Nations art. If you are wanting to shop and dine, there is a nice Red Deer shopping complex to hang out.

In the winter you can go ice skating at the Bower Ponds. Oh and don’t forget to stop by Donut Mill 🙂

Distance from Calgary: 1 hour 45 minutes one way

Drumheller Day trip from Calgary

The day trip from Calgary to Drumheller will take you to the dinosaur period. This town is home to Midland Provincial Park, Drumheller Dinosaur Park, Royal Tyrrell Dinosaur Museum, and stunning hoodoos.

As soon as you arrive in Drumheller make your way to Royal Tyrrell Museum of Paleontology whilst enjoying the lovely views. The museum will take 1 – 2 hours, and after that go on a short hike to the Coulee Viewpoint ( Dinosaur Provincial Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site).

From the park drive through the arid landscape, look at mining sites and ghost towns. These ghost towns were once thriving in the 19th century and now have been abandoned. Then stop by the Star Mine Suspension Bridge for a quick break, followed by a tour of the Atlas Coal Mine.

In the evening head to the Hoodoo Trail for capturing beautiful sunset views over the hoodoos .

Waterton Lakes National Park

Distance from Calgary: 3 hour one way

Watertown Lakes National Park in Canada seen from the Bears Hump.

Although 3 hours is a lot for a day trip, we found this to be an easier option to explore Waterton from Calgary when accommodation is expensive. So it is doable as long as you start early, and your day trip itinerary will mostly include exploring the town, the lake, short nature trails and a nice lunch break! (And sometimes with only a weekend to explore, we drive and stay in Calgary and from there visit the national park)

Waterton Lakes National Park is in southern Alberta and it borders Montana’s Glacier National Park. In 1932, both the National Parks were combined to form the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park.

The National Park forms a part of the Canadian Rockies Mountain system and is known for its lakes –  Upper and Middle Waterton lakes, Cameron Falls, Red Rock Canyon, with stunning views of the Rocky Mountains. You can plan to capture all of these on a day trip, especially one of the Waterton Lakes, and Cameron Falls is easily accessible from the town.

Waterton definitely deserves at least a weekend stay, and a day trip might be rushed (but still doable in warmer months). If you are visiting for 2 -3 days, embark on hiking trails, check out wildlife including Bisons.

Final Words Best Day Trips from Calgary Canada

In case you didn’t know, we LOVE Calgary. When you plan on visiting the city to explore the Canadian Rockies do set side additional day or two to explore some of the other wonders of the province like the Dinosaur Museum, ranch and the countryside, adventure hiking trails & ATV tours, and small towns from Calgary.

You will be delighted to see such amazing Prairie landscape and traditions in Alberta!

If it’s small-town charm you’re looking for, make your way to Okotoks, which lies just south of Calgary making it a great option for a quick day (or afternoon) trip. Here you’ll find plenty of restaurants, art galleries, local boutiques, and more than 53 miles (85 kilometers) of walking, hiking, and biking trails. About Calgary

  • Where is it? Calgary is a city in the province of Alberta in Canada located on the West of the country and the province borders the USA (Montana and Washington).
  • The population of Calgary is 1.3 million.
  • Closest airport? Calgary International Airport is 19km from the city centre with regular shuttle buses from the airport to downtown , taxis and trains to the action taking only about 20 minutes.
  • Airport code? YYC.
  • Best time to visit Calgary? Summer is the best time for a Calgary trip but the Fall / Winter months are great because the NHL season will have started so you can catch a Flames game!
  • How many days in Calgary? I’ve only ever spent one day at a time in Calgary as I only live in Banff. If you’re visiting I’d allow yourself maybe two days in the city to explore this itinerary, join some tours and take a slower pace before moving on to Alberta’s beautiful nature.
  • Where to stay in Calgary? Always pre-book accommodation for cities like this especially if you’re seeing a hockey game. Check availability here:

One Day in Calgary Itinerary

This Calgary trip itinerary will take you on a morning of art-exploring, an afternoon of culture through touring the gastronomy, music, and sports from the city and evening at a Calgary staple and ice hockey game. Follow this itinerary for the perfect things to do with just 24 hours in Calgary.

Join a walking tour to make the most out of this itinerary:

Breakfast at Holy Grill

How else would I start this Calgary must do list other than coffee and breakfast?! Head to Holy Grill to feel like a Calgarian as this breakfast spot is a family-owned business serving the finest Maple Syrup to satisfy your Canadian taste dreams.

They have multiple locations across town so you can find your branch wherever you are staying.

Climb Calgary Tower

Out of all the Calgary places to visit, this is probably the most famous. An iconic image for the city, you can admire the tower from afar or choose to climb it for epic views over the city. Calgary Tower general admission is not expensive so makes for cheap things to do in Calgary.

It’s considered a Calgary must see so head to downtown for this activity.

What I found crazy though was the fact that this tower, once the tallest in North America, was actually a lot shorter than the other skyscrapers in the city at just 158m.

Take a Photograph with the World’s Tallest Mural

Image of world's tallest mural in Calgary on side of building.

Pinned on Google Maps as the ‘World’s Tallest Mural’, this street art is located on a giant, concrete, flat wall on the East side of ‘First on Tenth’ building right opposite Calgary Tower.

The work is 95 metres high and was done by a German artist named DAIM.

Address : 105 10 Ave SW, Calgary, AB T2R 0B8, Canada

See Street Art and Statues

image of street art in Calgary downtown

Seeing these statues and street art are free activities Calgary has to offer if you want to walk around the city self-guided. If you’d prefer a guide to take you to the hotspots and learn about the different murals/projects, join this three hour street-art tour of Calgary including a few craft beer tastings and makes for fun Calgary Canada things to do.

Wonderland Sculpture

In front of the Bow Building you’ll find an art project called Wonderland by Jaume Plensa, a Spanish artist. It’s a metal frame of a girl’s head and easily one of the most instagrammable attractions in Calgary.

Address : 110 6 Ave SE, Calgary, AB T2G 0G2, Canada

The Alberta Five

The Alberta Five is a name given to five suffragettes from Alberta who advocated for women’s rights in the 1800s. They became a crucial asset to Canada’s history and therefore became known as The Famous Five. They fought for women to become part of ‘persons’ in the law and bills of Canada at that time.

There is now a homage to these women in the form of five statues that you can visit as points of interest Calgary.

Address : Women are persons, 8 Ave SE, Calgary, AB T2G 0K7, Canada

Lunch and Live Music at Ship and Anchor

Image of two musicians playing live music in Ship and Anchor in Calgary

The Ship and Anchor is a great establishment in Calgary with an authentic British pub-vibe from it’s decor, naval themed bar, homage to lots of British football teams and sports showing on the TV.

They have a large menu and serve food right up until closing time. I went for their house burger and poutine which I thoroughly enjoyed with a local craft beer.

Unbeknownst to us, they had two bands in that day playing live music and provided a warm, fun and enjoyable atmosphere. If you’re looking for things to do in Calgary Alberta, check out local bars who have live music on an afternoon. Especially the Ship and Anchor!

Address : 534 17 Ave SW, Calgary, AB T2S 0B1, Canada

Cross The Peace Bridge

Above the Bow River you’ll find many bridges but none quite like the peace bridge which has been accommodating pedestrians and cyclers since 2012. It has a red and white criss-cross design and resembles a candy-cane-style bullet train as it’s completely covered and more like a tunnel when you pass through.

If there’s one thing what to see in Calgary in one day, crossing this bridge over to the North Side from the centre is it.

It’s called Peace Bridge due to its proximity to Memorial Drive.

Visit WinSport Olympic Park

When visiting Calgary what to do is always the first question. And the Olympic Park is always the first answer. Calgary hosted the Winter Olympics in 1988 and the Olympic Park is still standing which is now run by WinSport and available for you to explore.

In the Summer you can take a guided tour of the park, karting and zip-lining and in the Winter you can skate, ski and snowboard.

Optional : If you’re interested in local craft beer, join a Brewery tour of Calgary . Go to three different breweries and get the inside info from your beer-guide!

Evening – A Must See in Calgary

Have dinner at anejo.

Anejo is a Calgary home for Mexican food and long list of tequila and providing a unique tequila experience is key for their restaurant.

The food is also delicious from their happy hour tacos, stuffed vegetables, salads and soups. My favourite, however, is the Fundido Tradicional which is a large pot of melted cheese, mushroom, chorizo and salsa served with warm tortillas. Incredible!

You can book an event, take home your own margarita kit and buy gift cards for the next time you’re in town. They also have locations in Banff and Toronto.

Address : 2116 4 St SW #2, Calgary, AB T2S 1W7, Canada

See a Flames Game at Saddleback Stadium

Image of Calgary Flames playing Winnipeg Jets at Saddleback stadium in Calgary. Image is from high seats with the stadium in complete red lights and players on.

The Scotiabank Saddleback Stadium is the home of Calgary Flames hockey team located in Stampede Park in Calgary and one of the best places to visit in Calgary. This is a huge place with over 8000 seats surrounding the rink, multiple restaurants, bars and information on the history of hockey. It’s not just hockey held here they also have concerts and performances like Shania Twain and Disney on Ice!

When it comes to a must do in Calgary though, a hockey game at Saddleback pretty much tops the list. I had the most fun here from the pre-game build up, the classic North American food and foam fingers you see at sports games, half-time shows, giveaways, anthem, charity, music, lights and of course the brilliant game! If you take nothing else from this Calgary travel blog, please go see a hockey game , you won’t regret it!

Afterwards, you could always check out Cowboys Casino and Nightclub which is always jam-packed after a Flames game and one of the best things to do in Calgary at night to end your sightseeing in Calgary.

Filming Locations Calgary

There are a few TV shows and films that used Calgary as locations for shooting. Take a walk around and see if you can spot filming locations from Cool Runnings, Fargo, The Revenant, Ghostbusters: After Life and Interstellar .

Join a Calgary City Tour

For the best of Calgary organised on your behalf, join one of these walking Calgary day tours to explore Calgary:

More Things to Do Calgary Canada

There are lots more things to do in Calgary Canada so next time you’re in Calgary or if you have longer check out the Glenbow Museum , wander downtown area, do some shopping at the malls, visit Fort Calgary (where Calgary was founded) or tour Heritage Park Historical Village . If you’re lucky enough to be here in July, do not miss the Calgary Stampede , one of the most famous festivals in Canada.

After Calgary

Calgary is an excellent gateway city for bigger and better things. How about the Canadian Rockies?! Yes. In just an hour and a half you can be within the mountains of Banff National Park and a few hours more you can head to Jasper National Park . You can take multiple one day trips from Calgary to these breathtaking places after all the things to do in Calgary CA.

Visiting Banff? Read all my Banff posts here!

Along the way there are so many amazing things to do in Alberta like Red Deer, Drumheller, Edmonton and Lethbridge so be sure to plan longer in this beautiful part of the world (which I’m sure you are).

8 Best Day Trips From Calgary

easy travel calgary

  • Destinations
  • Road Trips In Canada
  • Types of Travel

Besides the iconic Banff and Jasper National Parks on the Icefields Parkway, numerous other fascinating road trip destinations surround Alberta’s largest city. Before you go, ride to the Calgary Tower’s viewing area 627 feet above the city and picture what you’re about to see. If heights don’t faze you, stand on the glass floor section and watch the city’s bustle with a God’s-eye view. The tower is one of our five cool things to do in Calgary .

“Alberta,” the catchy official provincial song, says Alberta has it all. We can testify that it’s true. These are our favorite day trips from Calgary.

On the Albertan plains, you’ll go back to the future in Vulcan, the Official Star Trek Capital of Canada , and turn back time 3.9 billion years in the Drumheller Valley. In your mind, imagine bison’s thundering hooves running and crashing over the cliffs in Dry Island Buffalo Jump Provincial Park. Bask in the sunshine at Medicine Hat. Drive a highway where wildlife often outnumber people. Savor award-winning Gouda cheese at Sylvan Star Cheese.

Remember viewing the mountains from Calgary Tower ? Enjoy the southern and western Rockies. Yoho National Park of Canada is on the Rockies’ western slope. Embrace Yoho’s quieter, less-crowded vibe. To the south, celebrate peace at the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park.

Vulcan Tourism Trek Station, Vulcan.

1. Vulcan, The Star Trek Capital of Canada

When the Canadian Pacific Railway founded Vulcan , an hour southeast of Calgary, officials named it for the Roman god of fire. From Roman times, the town leaped into the 22nd century and grabbed the planet Vulcan. On Star Trek , Vulcan was Mr. Spock’s home planet.

On our first Vulcan visit, we arrived after the Vulcan Tourism Trek Station had closed. Seeing the station and the Starship FX6-1995-A after dark somehow made the structures feel more real. Portraits of Star Trek ’s stars are on a billboard next to the starship.  Each portrait has a cutout around its head, enabling Trekkers to pose as their favorite character. During daylight hours, pack a picnic and eat at the table below the starship.

Starship, Vulcan.

Inside the station, look for Star Trek props, actor and actress autographs. Find Mr. Spock’s bust a few blocks from the station and compare your hand span with his Vulcan salute. A mural portrays the series’s medical personnel and brave folks may enter the transporter. “Beam me up, Scotty!”

Pro Tip : Boldly go to the town’s annual Spock Days festival.

Tyra, the World's Largest Dinosaur, Drumheller.

2. The Drumheller Valley: Dinosaur Capital Of The World

One and a half hours northeast of Calgary, the Drumheller Valley features dinosaurs, bizarre hoodoos, and the Atlas Coal Mine. Start your visit at towering, terrifying Tyra, the World’s Largest Dinosaur . At 86 feet tall, she’s 4.5-times larger than your average Tyrannosaurus Rex. After you recover from the sight, climb the 106 stairs to Tyra’s mouth.

Continue the dinosaur theme at Drumheller’s Royal Tyrrell Museum, one of our Best Places to Experience Dinosaurs In Canada . In the Palaezoic exhibit, a Dunkleosteus fish looks like a cross between a parrot and a snapping turtle. Watch out for the 69-foot long ichthyosaur resting in the Triassic Giant exhibit. A human would be only an appetizer for that beast. Allow at least 2 hours.

Going from dinosaurs to fossil fuels, see how Alberta powered its homes and industry in the 20th century. Site admission enables guests to tour the Atlas Coal Mine ’s surface. To learn more, sign up for one of several tours . On the surface, ride the mine train, and learn how the mine processed coal. Climb the 125-foot gantry to the tipple’s top. Go below in the Underground Mining Experience. Please note the tours’ safety requirements and difficulty ratings.

Hoodoos pepper Drumheller’s landscape. Get personal with them in these badlands hiking options .

Stuff yourself with a mammoth burger from Bernie & The Boys . Stay at the Tyrannosaurus Rest .

Pro Tip : Visitors swarm the area between May and August. Avoid the heat and crowds; visit in the off-season.

Dry Island Buffalo Jump Provincial Park sign and entrance.

3. Dry Island Buffalo Jump Provincial Park, Trochu

Dry Island preserved rich bone beds of Albertosaurus fossils, including some now on display at the Royal Tyrrell. Eons later, the Cree stampeded bison off the park’s 148-foot cliffs. The Red Deer River runs through the park, but the name Dry Island comes from the 722-foot mesa that towers above the river. Humans have never plowed the mesa’s top, and so it retains its native grasses.

Dry Island Buffalo Jump Provincial Park, Trochu with yellow leafed trees and curving water valley.

The road descends steeply to the river and it turns treacherous during wet weather. At the river, unload a canoe and encounter the badlands from a totally different viewpoint. Watch for rocks, especially during the summer.

Trails are only loosely defined. Avoid the light gray bentonite clay in wet weather, it’s slippery. Pack a picnic lunch and enjoy it here.

In the fall, the flaming trees combine with the folded topography to turn the park into a spectacular landscape painting.

 Saamis Teepee, Medicine Hat

4. Medicine Hat

The sun shines brightly in Medicine Hat , Canada’s sunniest city, three hours southeast of Calgary. Calgary erected The Saamis Teepee to honor indigenous Canadians during the 1988 Winter Olympics. After the Olympics, Medicine Hat was awarded the giant structure. The teepee stands 20 stories high and is 160 feet wide. Ten storyboards explain the First Nations culture.

Some of the world’s largest sandstone boulders call Red Rocks home. Because the rocks formed at the bottom of ancient seas, sharp-eyed visitors may find fossil bones, leaves, and shells. Indigenous peoples camped there, leaving numerous artifacts.

Medalta Stone Ware building and sign with four flag poles in front of the building.

The Medalta pottery factory once exported its wares throughout the world. Now it’s a time capsule preserving western Canada’s Industrial Revolution. Look for ceramics artists in residence and peruse their wares. My husband bought a Medalta bean pot for my Christmas present. It contributes to the tastiest soups ever.

Eat pad-Thai and red choo chee at Sabai Thai Fusion or an AJ chicken sandwich at Grit City Distillery .

5. Rocky Mountain House National Historic Site (And The David Thompson Highway)

Rocky Mountain House (RMH), 2.5 hours northeast of Calgary, was a magical experience. We entered the backside of the historic site because of a mistaken GPS. We tailgated within earshot of the North Saskatchewan River. As we walked toward the main entrance, RMH history unfolded before us. We viewed the trading posts as they occurred in history, then arrived at the MĂŠtis village. What a delight! We learned how to prepare a hide, cook a bannock, and make a drum. The historic site offers numerous camping options.

Bighorn sheep across the road from Abraham Lake.

After we left RMH, we headed to the Icefields Parkway on Highway 11, the David Thompson Highway. Thompson was an early explorer who mapped more territory than Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. In our 2-hour drive, we met only one car. Instead, an elk ran beside our car and bighorn sheep and lambs cavorted beside Abraham Lake as if we weren’t there.

Outside Sylvan Star Cheese and sign.

6. Sylvan Star Cheese Farm, Red Deer County

On your way to RMH, stop at Sylvan Star Cheese . After they moved to Canada from The Netherlands, the Schalkwyk family struggled to find quality Gouda cheese. So they crafted their own. It’s some of the best cheese we’ve ever eaten. Tour the factory 1.5 hours north of Calgary and buy some cheese. From Calgary, Sylvan Star is halfway to Edmonton , Alberta’s capital.

Family walks down trial to view Takakkaw Falls in the background at Yoho National Park, Canada.

7. Yoho National Park of Canada, Field, B.C.

On the Rockies’ British Columbia side, visit Yoho National Park, 2 hours west of Calgary. Between Banff and Yoho, the road cuts through Kicking Horse Pass National Historic Site . At the viewpoints, stop to watch trains disappear and reappear in the Spiral Tunnels . The easy 0.75-mile Walk in the Past trail leads to an abandoned locomotive.

Numerous waterfalls stream over Yoho’s cliffs. Start with Canada’s second-highest waterfall, the 258-foot Takakkaw Falls with its waterwheel. “Takakkaw” means “magnificent” in Cree. The 20-minute walk from the parking lot is mostly paved and easy until you reach the waterfall’s base. You may also hike to Laughing and Wapta falls . Canoe on peaceful Emerald Lake or stroll the gentle 3.23-mile lakeshore trail.

Stay at the Le Beausoleil Bed and Breakfast in Golden. B.C., and eat at The Wolf’s Den . Order a Tatonka, an 8-oz. bison patty with whiskey bacon jam, and Canadian maple syrup pie.

Outside view of Prince of Wales Hotel.

8. Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park, Waterton Lakes

Two and a half hours southwest of Calgary, the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park anchors the Rockies as they span the US-Canadian border. Waterton Lakes is the Canadian side of the peace park and is quieter without Glacier’s tourist hordes. The fabulous Prince of Wales Hotel is the park’s centerpiece. You must enjoy afternoon tea in the hotel’s Royal Steward Dining Room. Outdoors, hike, ride a horse, enjoy a boat tour, kayak, or paddleboard.

In the winter, Waterton Lakes is nearly deserted — by people. Wildlife is everywhere. Still, the park remains in business with these winter activities .

Mother cow and cute calf cross the road Chief Mountain HWY on the northeastern mountains and forest of Glacier National Park, Montana, USA

From May 15 to September 30, cross the border directly into Glacier National Park at the Chief Mountain Crossing . Alternatively, drive 2.5 hours southeast of Calgary to Cardston, Alberta, and visit the Remington Carriage Museum before entering Glacier’s east side .  Pro Tip : When planning a trip to Canada, remember that many seasonal attractions close or reduce their hours after Canadian Thanksgiving , the second Monday in October, through mid-May.

The Calgary area and western Canada are filled with forested mountains, glaciers, sparkling rivers, waterfalls, and wildlife:

10 best day trips from Calgary for fun outdoor adventures

easy travel calgary

While there are plenty of fun things to do in Calgary , sometimes you just want a break from the big city.

With its enviable location of wide open prairies to the east and the majestic Rocky Mountains out west, Calgary is the gateway to some of the best outdoor activities in Alberta like hiking, rafting, skiing, horseback riding, dog sledding, ice climbing and even fossil hunting.

easy travel calgary

In less time than it takes to finish your double-double (yes, Tim Horton’s coffee is a must on any Canadian road trip ), you can find yourself hitting the hills alongside Olympic cross-country skiers, relaxing in a nordic spa, enjoying a helicopter tour over soaring alpine peaks and being mesmerized by the Northern Lights dancing across the night sky.

Whether you’re enjoying a solo adventure, couples getaway or are out exploring with the whole family, here are 10 fun day trips from Calgary that take less than two hours to drive to.

Sundre: 1 hr 20 min drive from Calgary

Found smack-dab in the middle of Alberta’s Cowboy Trail, this small town nestled between the Rockies and the rolling foothills is like an ode to the wild west. Saddle up and go for a trail ride in the arid Panther Valley, and admire the mountain vistas as you keep an eye out for the wild horses that frequent this area.

Get wet with an adrenaline-fueled rafting trip down the Red Deer River, or do the easy, 10 minute walk to what just might be Alberta’s best kept secret: Big Horn Falls in Ya-Ha Tinda.

On your way home, drop by the outdoor Pioneer Museum which houses buildings like a ranger station and blacksmith shop, to get a glimpse of what life was like in the early 1900s ‘round these parts.

Sylvan Lake: 1 hr 40 min drive from Calgary

Anyone who grew up in Calgary has fond memories of lazy summer days spent at this lake retreat, which is near the city of Red Deer in central Alberta. Grab an ice cream cone and window shop along the waterfront, hop on a paddleboard, cool off with a swim or hit the beach to soak up the sun.

Sylvan Lake is one of the best day trips from Calgary

Kids love the open water splash park , and other fun family activities include golfing, fishing, an indoor BMX park and sailing. In the winter, bundle up and try your luck at ice fishing and curling.

Mossleigh, Aspen Crossing and Vulcan: 1 hour drive from Calgary

While the hamlet of Mossleigh might not make much of a mark on the map, what it lacks in size it makes up for in photogenic sites. This is one of the few remaining places in Alberta where there’s a trio of grain elevators still standing, which are remnants of the area’s long farming history.

While Mossleigh is only an hour from Calgary, it’s far enough from the city that there’s almost no light pollution, so you can sometimes see the northern lights:

The northern lights in Mossleigh, Alberta

The best known attraction around here is Aspen Crossing , which is another one of the fun day trips from Calgary. This former tree farm has transformed into a train-themed destination, complete with a RV park, glamping in their cute Caboose Cabins, bike trails and more than a dozen railroad excursions for all ages.

Adults will enjoy the Wine and Cheese, Champagne Brunch and Dinner Theatre offerings, while kids get a kick out of the Circus Train and Star Trek-themed Trek Train.

Aspen Crossing is one of the best day trips from Calgary

Speaking of Star Trek, Vulcan is a 25 minute drive from Mossleigh and best known as being ground zero for Trekkies.

You can’t miss the Enterprise statue when you drive into the town, murals of the Star Trek doctors, a Bust Of Spock which was created for Leonard Nimoy who visited in 2010, and even a ‘transporter’ to get you back to the Star Fleet.

Vulcan is one of the best day trips from Calgary

Vulcan comes alive during the annual Spock Days , a fun family festival with things like a Star Trek-themed parade, soap box derby, beer gardens and fireworks. Don’t forget to wear your pointy ears!

Drumheller: 1 hr 30 min drive from Calgary

This is one of the best day trips from Calgary for families, because what kid doesn’t love dinosaurs?! Drumheller is found in the Canadian Badlands, and the landscape is like something straight out of The Land Before Time.

Drumheller is one of the best day trips from Calgary

Its big draw is The Royal Tyrrell Museum , which houses one of the world’s largest collections of dinosaur skeletons, including a giant T-Rex! Guests can enjoy scenic walks through the hoodoos, search for fossils and make their own cast of a fossil to take home.

Drumheller is one of the best day trips from Calgary

Crowsnest Pass: 2 hour drive from Calgary

If you love rolling hills, wide open spaces and big skies, then the Crowsnest Pass is your place. Most Calgarians end up in the region en route to places like Fernie , Waterton or the U.S. border, and since it’s mostly a series of roadside hamlets few people end up stopping. Big mistake.

Crowsnest Pass is a photographer’s dream, with hidden gems like powerful Lundbreck Falls. It’s absolutely magnificent in all seasons, yet few road-trippers even notice the waterfall since there are only a few small signs marking the turnoff and you can’t quite see it from the highway.

Lundbreck Falls in Alberta is one of the best Calgary day trips

The area’s most famous attraction is Frank Slide , which marks a dark day in Alberta’s history. In 1903, the coal mining town Frank was decimated by a rockslide and nearly 100 people were killed, making it Canada’s deadliest rockslide.

Aside from the boulders that were moved to clear the highway, most of the stones remain and there’s now an interpretive centre on site as well as a 1.5 kilometre trail through the rocks.

Frank Slide is one of the best day trips from Calgary

Other spots to check out during your day trip from Calgary include the Leitch Collieries Provincial Historic Site , which is a former coal processing plant with an Instagram-worthy backdrop.

Keep an eye out for the nearby Burmis Tree, which is a limber pine that was believed to be between 600 and 750 years old before finally dying in the 1970s and is now considered a heritage symbol.

Head-Smashed-in Buffalo Jump: 1 hr 50 min drive from Calgary

This UNESCO World Heritage Site is among Alberta’s greatest historical treasures, and one of the world’s biggest, oldest and best preserved buffalo jumps .

The exhibition site details how the Blackfoot Bands used the area for buffalo hunting and the work of archaeologists to preserve it, making this one of the more educational weekend road trips from Calgary.

There are also hiking trails where guides point out things like native plant uses and how the Indigenous people were able to live off the land, and youth activities include tipi building.

Kananaskis: 1 hour drive from Calgary

When out-of-towners looking for a mountain getaway ask what the best road trips from Calgary are, they’re usually told to head to Banff or Lake Louise.

Well, here’s a secret: we do that because we don’t want you to end up in Kananaskis, which is where us locals actually prefer to go on the weekends!

easy travel calgary

Found on Highway 22 just off the Trans-Canada Highway, Kananaskis Country (or K-Country) is like the best of Banff without the crowds: think pristine lakes, incredible hiking trails, and frequent wildlife sightings like moose, bighorn sheep and bears.

During winter you can snowshoe around spots like Chester Lake, or hit the slopes at the Nakiska Ski Area which was used as the downhill course during the 1988 Winter Olympics.

West Wind Pass, overlooking Spray Lakes in Kananaskis

Book a Kananaskis day trip:

Kananaskis is also a popular spot for weekend trips from Calgary, thanks to idyllic hideaways like Mt Engadine Lodge . Found in the backcountry near Spray Lakes, it has cozy rooms, a yurt and year-round glamping tents, and sweet touches like a fantastic afternoon tea.

The Pomeroy Kananaskis is another luxe option, and is right next to the Kananaskis Nordic Spa which has a Scandinavian-inspired hydrotherapy circuit. With five outdoor pools, a eucalyptus-infused steam room, saunas and comfy hammocks, it makes for a blissful day trip from Calgary.

Canmore: 1 hour drive from Calgary

A great stop on any Canadian Rockies road trip is Canmore, which features alpine trails, sublime scenery, and some fabulous local eateries.

A trio of peaks called the Three Sisters welcomes guests to this pretty mountain town, which is known for being home base for many Olympians. In fact, chances are you’ll run into a couple of pro cross-country skiers if you head to the Canmore Nordic Centre, which has 65 kilometres of groomed trails.

Book one of these awesome excursions in Canmore:

A fun activity for the whole family is to cycle the Legacy Trail. The 40-kilometre long pathway hugs the highway between Canmore and Banff, and is a relatively flat path frequented by cyclists, joggers and even the odd horseback rider.

It’s a perfect way to soak in the landscape while getting in a killer workout, and some opt for a return trip while others just do it in one direction and coordinate a drive back.

Banff: 1 hr 15 min drive from Calgary

Banff needs no introduction: images of its soaring, craggy peaks, turquoise lakes and sweeping valleys have graced many a magazine cover, making this mountain town one of Canada’s top attractions.

Moraine Lake is a must-see, but be warned: you usually have to get there by 6 a.m. during the busy summer months to get a spot in the parking lot!

Book one of these great outdoor adventures in Banff:

Lake louise: 2 hour drive from calgary.

The drive from Calgary to Lake Louise only takes a couple of hours, but you’ll feel like you’ve been transported to a completely different world compared to the bustling city: think deep emerald lakes framed by rugged peaks, and fluffy snow that clings to the tree branches making it look like they’ve been dusted with icing sugar if you happen to visit in the winter.

View of Lake Louise from the Big Beehive Trail

The enchanting scene makes this one of the most romantic weekend getaways from Calgary, and couples love holing up in the luxe Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise which looks out right over the lake.

Indulge in spa treatments inside the wellness centre, enjoy a traditional afternoon tea, hike up to the Lake Agnes Tea House for fantastic views, or rent a canoe and paddle along the shoreline.

There’s also plenty to do during winter which makes Lake Louise one of the best Calgary day trips in every season.

Bundle up under cozy blankets on a horse-drawn sleigh ride, lace up a pair of skates and glide around the frozen lake, or time your visit for the annual Ice Magic Festival to watch ice carving demonstrations and grab a cool cocktail from the ice bar.

Book a tour to see some of the best spots in and around Lake Louise:

Have more time to spare? Consider heading up the ridiculously-scenic Icefields Parkway which leads to Jasper National Park : the turnoff is just past Lake Louise.

13 Fresh and Unique Day Trips from Calgary for 2024 (free mini itineraries)

Share with your friends!

Calgary is located in a perfect part of the province to discover all kinds of hidden gems. If you’re short on time but need to get out of the house for a day, here’s a list of fresh ideas for unique day trips from Calgary.

There are some amazing farms, wineries, craft breweries, waterfalls, scenic viewpoints and small town shopping experiences to discover.

Alberta is full of hidden gems (here’s my list of my top 40 unique ones ) and there is no shortage of them found within 2 hours of Calgary.

Avoid the crowds and the prices of places like Banff, Lake Louise and Waterton and explore more places to go near Calgary.

I’ve compiled a list of fun mini-itineraries; check them out and let me know your favorites!

Best Unique Day Trips from Calgary

Diners, dinosaurs and dna gardens.

Location: 2 hours northeast of Calgary

easy travel calgary

Start your road trip by grabbing coffee and breakfast in a rural town. I recommend High Seas Coffee Company in Linden or Little Bird Bakery in Three Hills.

If you prefer to stay on Highway 2, the Starlite Diner in Bowden is also a good choice; it’s a 1950s style dinner, clad with chrome and red booths.

Your next stop is at Dry Island Buffalo Jump, the most underrated provincial park in my opinion. After driving down flat prairie roads, the earth suddenly opens up in a beautiful display of a valley carved out during the ice age.

Here you can simply enjoy the stunning view from above, or head down for some light hiking. There are tons of trails and scenic riverfront to explore as little or as long as you want.

There’s even remnants of the meteor from the impact in the Yucatan some 65 million years ago.

20 minutes away is DNA Gardens , an amazing orchard with an onsite farm store and restaurant. Stay for lunch, pie and coffee or cool down with gelato.

If you have time, plan to attend a wine tasting! If you’re shorter on time, take a self guided tour through the orchard.

Inside Tip – if you’re looking for more of a weekend getaway, stay at nearby Pine Lake in this log cabin style cottage with pool and lake access and walking distance to the golf course.

Crossfield to Didsbury

Location: Less than 1 hour north of Calgary

easy travel calgary

First stop is at the Donut Man in Crossfield! Is there anything better than small town fresh baked donuts? They’re fluffy, delicious and come in all kinds of fun flavors (we’re talking cotton candy, maple bacon, cinnamon toast crunch, blueberry fritter among others).

Continue onwards to PaSu Farm where you can roam around and enjoy the gorgeous view, have lunch and peruse the farm shop for local goodies. Their afternoon tea with fresh baked scones is worth the drive alone.

After enjoying a lovely couple of hours escaping the city, head to the quaint small town of Didsbury to enjoy the picturesque historic downtown (including great shopping), lovely parks and a fantastic hidden gem brewery.

Cowtown Brewing Co. is known for their chai beer, stop in for a tasting or a pint on their sidewalk patio.

Sheep River and Turner Valley/Black Diamond

Location: 1 hour 45 minutes southwest of Calgary

easy travel calgary

Put this on your list for a dog friendly day trip from Calgary. Bluerock Wildland Provincial Park is a breathtaking area only open in the summer. Discover all kinds of hiking trails, scenic viewpoints, and a couple of waterfalls (namely Sheep River Falls).

After your outdoor adventure, stop in at Turner Valley for a drink at either Eau Claire Distillery or a pint at Fahr Brewery. Have dinner in nearby Black Diamond (a 2 minute drive away) at Westwood (especially if you love brisket).

For dessert before you head home, stop in for a milkshake or a float at Marv’s Diner (1950s soda shop themed).

Or visit the Hard Knox Brewery for liquid dessert (the outdoor patio is pooch-friendly).

For the ultimate rural weekend getaway, book a stay at this rustic cabin built in 1918 and plan a weekend of horseback trail riding and campfire cooking.

Waterfalls, Wolves and Ice Cream

Location: 40 minutes northwest of Calgary

easy travel calgary

This day trip is for kids young and old. Just on the outskirts of Calgary is Butterfield Acres is the first stop – a fun petting zoo & adventure farm.

Play with the pigs and chicken, milk a goat and hunt for freshly laid eggs.

Head north to Big Hill Springs Provincial Park for easily accessible waterfalls (please note this park is temporarily closed to add more accessible infrastructure).

Then head into Cochrane for lunch or hand-crafted famous ice cream at McKays in the historic downtown.

End with an afternoon tour at the Yamnuska Wolfdog Sanctuary , just 15 minutes west of Cochrane.

Inside tip – book a stay downtown at the 100-year old Rockyview Hotel and don’t miss having a fantastic meal at My Greek Plate.

I also recommend visiting Half Hitch Brewing to continue with the western-theme (also dog friendly).

easy travel calgary

P.S. – Alberta has tons of amazing agritourism experiences – check out some ideas here .

Okotoks Getaway

Location: 30 minutes south of Calgary

easy travel calgary

Start with coffee and light breakfast at 94 Take the Cake – a black and white themed optical illusion (it feels like you’re walking into a comic book).

Check out my Instagram for a fun tour of this place!

If you want, get your coffees to go and walk down Elma Street while you admire the beautiful vintage houses.

Tip – walk east toward House of Proust for fun antique shopping in a converted church.

The Saskatoon Farm is a must during the summer with all kinds of activities available.

Here you can enjoy farmer’s market-style shopping, walk the trails along the grounds and interact with the animals, stroll through the greenhouse and have lunch at the onsite Mexican restaurant.

Continue with the agritourism theme and explore the countryside with a visit to the Chinook Honey Farm just south of town.

In the summer, there’s a great patio overlooking the distant mountains – a perfect spot to indulge in some local ice cream or a chilled bottle of mead.

Wine, Cowboys and Goats in Water Valley

easy travel calgary

Location: 1 hour north of Calgary

Head north on Highway 22 for an off the beaten path adventure from Calgary.

Early Dawn Farm is a family-owned goat dairy that produces small batch cheese, goat’s milk caramel, soaps and creams. Stop in at the farm store or plan a visit to the cheese or soap making classes.

Not far down the road is the Water Valley Saloon, a must stop for lunch or a beverage to enjoy the home cooking and cowboy décor.

10 minutes further is Fallentimber Meadery , one of Alberta’s most established honey wineries.

Stop in for a tour and tasting and learn all about how wine is produced in Alberta.

If you love mojitos, you’re going to go crazy for their flagship mead.

P.S . – you can watch my YouTube video touring Fallentimber Meadery and other wine spots around Alberta!

Winery E-Bike Adventure

easy travel calgary

Another internationally-known Alberta winery is Spirit Hills, located just outside of Black Diamond. Stop in at the Rollick bike shop to rent an e-bike for the day and cruise the rural roads up to the winery (about a 30-40 minute ride).

Once you arrive at Spirit Hills, the panoramic view is a dead giveaway of how it got its name (just trust me on the views up here)!

Enjoy a tour and tasting of their flower wines, each with their own fascinating story of how they came to be. The dandelion wine is my favorite.

Cruise back into town for dinner at Westwood before returning your bike across the street.

Of course, you don’t have to visit the winery on a bike, you can certainly drive up there yourself.  If you’re not up for e-biking, the town has great shops to explore on foot.

Take The Long Way to Kananaskis

Location: 1 hour to Longview and then 1 hour to Kananaskis

easy travel calgary

Enjoy a scenic day trip from Calgary by driving to Kananaskis via Longview and the Highwood Pass.

Schedule a one or two hour horseback trail ride tour to experience the breathtaking beauty of K-Country.

Or enjoy the scenery on one a world class hiking trail – the Ptarmigan Cirque trail is a great hike for a day trip which is less than a 5km loop.

Finish with a meal in Kananaskis Village.

Off the Beaten Path Picnic

Location: 1 hour west of Calgary

Pack a picnic and take Highway 68 out to the Sibbald Lake area. It’s a beautiful drive, and as a bonus, the road usually isn’t too busy due to some of it being gravel for about 10 kms.

But there’s a beautiful viewpoint area with plenty of trails and quiet picnic tables.

While it’s a great spot to visit in the summer, doing this among the autumn colors is on my bucket list!

Drumheller Daycation

Location: 1 hour 30 minutes east of Calgary

easy travel calgary

Visiting Drumheller for a day of sightseeing and adventure is still one of my favorite day trips from Calgary.

Start off at Horseshoe Canyon where you can either take in the views from above, or hit the hiking trails. Head south of town to visit the Star Mine Suspension Bridge and the Hoodoo Viewpoint.

Head back into downtown Drumheller to roam around among the dinosaurs, including climbing up over 400 stairs into the jaws of the world’s largest dinosaur.

Enjoy a local craft beer at Valley Brewing.

Finish off your day with a stop at Horsethief Canyon, and then take the Bleriot Ferry across the Red Deer River and head up to Orkney Viewpoint for sunset if you can time it right!

Read up on my ultimate list of things to do in Drumheller with a few more tips about scenic viewpoints, hiking and ghost towns.

Round out a perfect weekend and stay overnight at the Heartwood Inn .

Small Town Dining

Location: 45 minutes north east of Calgary

Who doesn’t like a road trip specifically for food?!

Take a drive down Highway 806 to Linden, Alberta and stop in at Cou n try Cousins restaurant, known for their famous peanut butter pie!

Better yet, plan to eat an entire meal here, as it’s all homestyle comfort foods like perogies and brisket.

Custom Woolen Mills

Location: 1 hour northeast of Calgary

Did you take up a new hobby in 2020, say maybe knitting or crochet?

Visit Custom Woolen Mills that uses equipment from the late 1800s to produce wool, yarn and other fibre products!

Stay tuned to their website or Facebook page to find out when they’re able to offer mill tours once restrictions are lifted, but in the meantime you are welcome to visit their retail shop on site to purchase things like socks, hand-woven blankets, hand-knit garments and kits, and felted items.

High River Holiday

easy travel calgary

High River is the set of the fictional town of Hudson on the hit Canadian TV show Heartland and also a filming location for Fargo .

Explore the fantastic downtown facades, little stores, coffee shops and restaurants.

There’s also a museum in town with lots of props from the Heartland set.

Maggie’s Diner isn’t open to the public, but you can peek through the windows to see the set inside. Pay a visit to Evelyn’s next door for some saskatoon berry pie and ice cream.

I also recommend having lunch at the Whistle Stop Diner – a 1947 coach car for the Canadian National Railway.

Don’t miss the Honey Mill, which is a great spot to grab some farm gate sales like honey, bee pollen and beeswax.

On Saturdays in August you can even bring your own pail to fill up with honey that was in the field only a few days before.

Inside tip – if you want serious Alberta scenery, gorgeous back road views are found on Tongue Creek road.

At the end of this article I’m including the map of hikes around Calgary so you can plan an amazing day on the trails near Calgary.

Now let’s dive into 21 of the best easy hiking trails in Calgary Alberta.

Best Calgary Hikes

Best Easy Hikes in Calgary

No matter where you are living in Calgary there is a hiking and biking trail nearby.

Nose Hill Park

Free Parking

The fourth largest urban park in Canada and Calgary’s largest municipal park, Nose Hill is in Northwest Calgary and it’s one of the best places to go hiking in Calgary.

I used to bring my German Shepherd to Nose Hill Park. She especially loved wintertime hikes and chasing snowballs. In summer she would carry rocks back to the house and find the perfect place to hide the rocks in a corner or under a chair. Is your dog a rock collector too?

There is an off leash area at Nose Hill Park so you can bring your dogs and let them run freely.

Nose Hill Park is huge so there are lots of pretty hikes to choose from and explore the park, especially in spring and summertime you will find bunches of wildflowers at Nose Hill.

Prince’s Island

Free parking after 6 pm, all day Sundays and holidays

When I lived in downtown Calgary, I would walk to Prince’s Island almost every week. Prince’s Island and nearby St Patrick’s Island are the gems of downtown Calgary.

Parks with water always get my attention.

Set alongside the Bow River, with large trees, and lots of geese and ducks, you feel the relaxing vibe of nature at Prince’s Island Park.

Prince’s Island is the most popular of Calgary hikes.

So you’ll have to share this relaxing vibe with dozens (hundreds?) of other people enjoying the trails at Prince’s Island. And a a gaggle of geese.

Enjoy some people watching while you are walking.  Or put on your earbuds and listen to your fave tunes while you enjoy your urban hike in Cagary.

Did I mention there is an ice-cream kiosk at Prince’s Island Park?

North/South Glenmore Park

Free Parking at several lots in the park

North Glenmore Park is in Southwest Calgary but it’s on the north side of the Glenmore Reservoir, hence the name. And you guessed it, South Glenmore Park is on the south side of Glenmore Reservoir.

I visit North Glenmore Park often and hike around the reservoir. Most of the pathways at the park are paved but there are some dirt trails too.

Springtime at Weaselhead Flats Calgary

Weaselhead Flats Calgary

I prefer the natural dirt trails. Head over to the Weaselhead Flats trail to the west of Glenmore park for cool views and birdwatching.

Watch out for cyclists at North Glenmore Park, and little kids, and older folks.

Besides hiking you can also go kayaking or canoeing at Glenmore Park. Visit the Glenmore Rowing Club to rent a boat and get on the water.

My sister and I saw a bald eagle when we went kayaking at Glenmore one summer.

In wintertime in Calgary , Glenmore Park is especially pretty after a good snowfall. Some people go snowshoeing or cross-country skiing in the park when there is enough snow.

Carburn Park

I’m embarrassed to admit that I didn’t know about Carburn Park until a few years ago. Carburn is in the Riverbend community in Southeast Calgary.

I signed up for a beginner’s kayaking class with UC Outdoor Centre (you should check it out) and our original location of Glenmore Reservoir was closed due to high water levels. We went to Carburn Park instead, and wow!

What a beautiful park with incredible hiking trails along the Bow River and in the woods. You are almost guaranteed to see deer if you hike at dusk. Also ducks, geese, and other birds make their home in Carburn Park.

Inglewood Bird Sanctuary

Free Parking/Free Admittance

Another of the best hikes in Calgary is at Inglewood Bird Sanctuary. It’s free to visit the park and visitor center.

The well-marked hiking trails at Inglewood Bird Sanctuary are an excellent place to explore nature, birdwatching, and hike by the water.

You can also take a tour of the historic Colonel Walker House on the grounds at Inglewood park.

I often see deer at Inglewood Sanctuary. And of course, lots of birds. Bring your binoculars so you can do some birding.

Edworthy Park

You can park at North Edworthy Park on the north side of the Bow River, or South Edworthy Park on the south side of the Bow.

Edworthy is a beautiful place to hike in Calgary any season of the year. Walking alongside the Bow River is relaxing for the mind.

Hungry after hiking? Angel’s Café near the north parking lot is a great place to grab lunch and refreshments before or after your hike.

There are a bunch of picnic spots near the south parking lot at Edworthy if you want to do a picnic lunch or dinner at the park. Or bring a blanket and picnic anywhere you like at Edworthy Park with beautiful views of the Bow River.

Goslings Calgary Alberta Canada

Another beautiful park along the Bow River in Northwest Calgary is Baker Park. Located along the north side of the Bow River, Baker Park is across the river from Bowness Park.

Fancy some disc golf? You can do that at Baker Park.

There is also an amphitheater at Baker Park for music and theatrical events during summer months.

Did you know Baker Park location used to be the Baker Centre Tuberculosis Institution?

The park is named for Dr. Albert Henry Baker, director of the tuberculosis sanatorium for 30 years, from 1920 – 1950.

Fish Creek is another great spot for birding in Calgary. And you’ll probably see some deer if you go hiking early in the morning or near sunset.

Pearce Estate Park

Pearce Estate Park is a big beautiful park along the Bow River in southeast Calgary with wetlands, picnic areas, playground, and lovely hiking trails through the forest and on the riverside.

The park is downriver from the Calgary Zoo and one of the main attractions at Pearce is the white-water kayak slalom course at Harvie Passage.

At Pearce Estate Park you can watch the kayakers from the Harvie Passage lookout and check out the awesome art sculpture by Lorna Jordan.

Tom Campbell’s Hill

Tom Campbell’s Hill Nature Park is a short easy hike in the Bridgeland neighborhood. Information panels on the hilltop tell the history of the area.

This nature park has outstanding skyline views of downtown from atop the hill so it’s a great place to watch the sunset in Calgary.

There’s also an off-leash dog park at Tom Campbell hill so it’s the perfect place to hike with your dog in Calgary.

Hiking Near Calgary

One great thing about being so close to the mountains is that there are lots of easy day hikes near Calgary.

Chester Lake

Chester Lake is another wonderful all-season hike in the Calgary region.

6 Easy Travel Destinations from Calgary

  • April 24, 2024

easy travel calgary

As many of you know, my family and I LOVE to travel. Whether it’s a bigger trip abroad or an excursion into our own backyard (hello, BC), we can often be found out and about, and I want to share a few of my favourite locations with you. As we get closer to real spring (no more of this false spring or second winter), we’ll be able to focus in on those warm weather adventures. I can’t wait!

Puerto Vallarta

In March, I had the wonderful opportunity to travel to PV with Randelle Lusk of The Rare Method for an amazing women’s entrepreneurship retreat. We have an incredible community of female entrepreneurs here in Calgary, and I feel very lucky to have had many of them on the trip as well. We soaked up the sun by the pool, listened to the waves crash on the beach, indulged in some delicious meals, and moved our bodies in intentional yoga sequences. I’m a big fan of a warm weather vacation, especially when it involves the beach! If you are ready for a retreat-type trip, Randelle has one booked in Portugal soon.

Another popular warm weather destination from Calgary, Punta Cana is in the Dominican Republic and boasts an abundance of crystal-clear blue water, sunny days and good food. Bavaro Beach is a great example of the “perfect” beach—white sands, palm trees and all. I recommend traveling here when you have a decent amount of vacation days that you want to use up. It takes almost 7 hours in total (direct) to travel to Punta Cana, so you want to make sure that you have enough full days to make the travel worth it. Like any tropical destination, snorkeling, sailing, parasailing, diving and just swimming are amazing ways to experience the area.

South of France

I’ve seen friend after friend jet off to the South of France, and really, do we even have to question why? There were some incredible seat sales to the area not long ago, resulting in many people booking their spring holidays here. Every time I go to the South of France, I feel like I’ve stepped right out of a romcom or romance movie. Nice, Saint-Tropez, Provence and Monaco are popular destinations with quite a variety of things to see and activities to do. Pick up some fresh lavender in Provence, channel your inner Grace Kelly in Monaco or lay by the beach in Saint-Tropez. Again, for this type of trip, I recommend giving yourself lots of time to explore since travel to and from Calgary is a bit more of a long haul.

Palm Springs

Ahh, beloved Palm Springs. A destination that many Calgarians have frequented, due to the quick travel time and relative affordability to get down there. Located just south of us and slightly to the west, this desert-like destination is popular for its food scene, landscape, weather, and mid-century modern architectural influence. Did you know that Palm Springs rose to fame in the 1920s because many Hollywood stars were making weekend trips down to the area? Today, you can see a lot of this history throughout the city, and you can even go on one of the many Hollywood-centric tours that are offered. For me, I love spending some time hiking in Joshua Tree, checking out the local restaurants, seeing the art and lounging by the pool. Palm Springs is the perfect long weekend getaway from Calgary, as it’s only just over 3 hours of travel time.

Honestly, island life is the best life. I know that I’ve said that all these destinations are the best, but Tofino is great if you want to stay within Canada but experience somewhere totally different from Calgary. Located on Vancouver Island, Tofino is a beautiful coastal town that has the best of both worlds—stunning forests and remarkable sand beaches. Of course, the water is cold out there, but surfing is lots of fun if you have a wetsuit on! If you haven’t tried it before, this is your chance to do it within Canada.

Part of the beauty of Tofino is the process of getting there. I recommend flying to Vancouver, renting a car, taking the ferry, and driving out to Tofino. Although the drive can sometimes be slow, especially if there’s construction on the main highway, there’s nothing more breathtaking than driving by cascading waterfalls and soaring redwood trees. If you go, you have to stop by the original Tacofino truck and get a truly beautiful dining experience at Wolf in the Fog or The Pionte .

Skiiers LOVE Fernie in the winter, but it’s equally fun to visit during a road trip in the summer. Nestled in the heart of the Rocky Mountains, this alpine town has a lovely little main drag and beautiful hiking trails nearby. This is a bit more of a “close to home” destination, making it super easy to travel to (and relatively inexpensive). Fernie also has some natural hot springs—if you’ve never tested out the geothermal waters before, it’s a fun experience that’s set amongst the wilderness. You have to go to the iconic Big Bang Bagels for a snack or stop by Fernie Brewing Co. for a beer—the What the Huck is a nice, summery beer.

Now that I’ve summed up some of my favourite places, I want you to send me your recommendations via my Wealth With Julie Instagram page. Before you go, I want to remind you that SkyScanner , Kiwi , Expedia , Kayak and more are always there for your next jet setting adventure. It’s always good to shop around, especially when you’re keeping to a travel budget.

Calgary Travel Guide

Last Updated: August 30, 2023

The skyline of Calgary, Canada during sunset

While the city itself isn’t particularly pretty — it’s full of skyscrapers and doesn’t have a lot of historic buildings — underneath all that glass is a cosmopolitan destination with a rough and wild cowboy charm to it. There’s great hiking, kayaking, skiing, water rafting, and camping all around Calgary and the city itself is one of the liveliest in the country, especially during the Stampede.

There’s a ton of greenspace here too. Add in a rotating roster of food trucks, craft beer bars, and top-notch museums, and you’ve got a recipe for one of my favorite cities in Canada.

From here, you can head out to Banff National Park or Canmore to get up close and personal with nature and explore one of Canada’s most scenic regions.

This travel guide to Calgary can help you plan your trip, save money, and make the most out of your time in Calgary!

Top 5 Things to See and Do in Calgary

A huge crowd of people celebrating the Calgary Stampede in Calgary, Canada

1. Celebrate the Calgary Stampede

The Calgary Stampede is the world’s largest open-air rodeo held every year in July. The Stampede celebrates Canada’s western heritage with chuckwagon races, bull riding, concerts, carnival rides, and endless fair food (deep-fried butter, anyone?). It’s also a crazy party. Daytime rodeos start at 66 CAD and evening rodeos start at 84 CAD. There’s even a Drag Queen brunch in case you didn’t know you could combine a Western theme with a drag show! Just be sure to book your accommodation early as the city fills up fast!

2. Walk Stephen Avenue

Stephen Avenue is a pedestrian-only thoroughfare in the heart of downtown Calgary. It’s lined with antique stores, boutiques, restaurants, and bars. It’s best in the summer when the outdoor patios are overflowing with locals enjoying an after-work drink. This street is a great place for food trucks, outdoor festivals, and live music. In February, it turns into a snowy wonderland during the Downtown Glowfest light festival with performances and beautiful art installations. At the same time, you can warm your hands with delicious hot chocolate served both with and without alcohol at the YYC Hot Chocolate Festival.

3. Relax in the many parks

Calgary makes incredible use of its green spaces and there are many beautiful places where you can lounge and relax or enjoy the area cycling the numerous trails around the city. Visit Bowness Park, one of the city’s most popular parks in warm weather alongside the Bow River, where you can enjoy walking the paths, swim in the lagoon, BBQ, or rent a boat for the day. In winter, it’s a popular spot for ice skating and cross-country skiing, and the popular Canadian winter sport of crokicurl (hybrid of curling and crokinole). Prince’s Island Park is where people gather for Canada Day and Calgary’s Folk Festival celebrations in July. The Winter Music Folk Festival also happens there as well. In short, there is a ton of greenspace that can help you enjoy the city and take in the local pace of life on a budget.

4. Visit the Calgary Zoo

Not only is the Calgary Zoo home to tons of interesting wildlife, but it also houses the Centre for Conservation Research. There are currently around 900 animals from all over the world. Go see the penguins splashing around or check out the ‘Canadian Wilds’ area with moose, grizzly bears, bighorn sheep, and more. Or explore the indoor ‘Destination Africa’ pavilion with giraffes, monkeys, hippos, and more. Every month there are different special events. If you’re here at Christmas, attend the Zoolights, a spectacular light show composed of three million lights. And if you want to splash out, you can even sit inside a warm ‘Snowglobe’ in their Garden of Light and enjoy a hot cup of mulled wine and an artisan cheese board (175 CAD for two people). Regular admission is 30 CAD.

5. Go to the Rockies

Calgary is close to the Rocky Mountains, and the highlight of this region is the spectacular Banff National Park. The Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and both Canada’s first national park and its most famous due to its picturesque turquoise lakes, snow-capped peaks, wildlife, and breathtaking scenery. There are over 1,600 kilometers (1,000 miles) of stunning mountain trails with all sorts of activities, from hiking, skiing, and horseback riding, as well as places to camp. You can certainly visit as a day trip from Calgary, but you’ll be missing out if you don’t spend a few days here. There is something for every budget when it comes to how much you want to experience nature. You can pitch a tent at a campsite, rent a cabin, try glamping, or stay in Banff town at a hotel. Even without a car, it’s easy to get here via bus (though renting a car is the best way to explore this area).

Other Things to See and Do in Calgary

1. take a free walking tour.

The first thing I do when I arrive in a new city is take a free walking tour. It’s the best way to see the highlights and meet a local expert guide who can answer all your questions. Walk the YYC runs a solid free tour that can introduce you to the city. Just be sure to tip your guide at the end! There’s also Calgary Greeters, a free local greeting program that connects you with a local who can show you around (advanced bookings required).

2. Hang out in Prince’s Island Park

Right on the Bow River, this park spans 50 acres and is the most popular park in the city. There are free festivals and events year-round, such as the Calgary Folk Music Festival and Shakespeare in the Park. It also has running and hiking paths, cross-country skiing trails, picnic areas, flower gardens, and lots of space to simply lounge and relax. In the winter, people go skating on the lagoon.

3. Check out Fish Creek Provincial Park

Fish Creek also sits along the Bow River and is perfect for walking, cycling, and rollerblading. In the summer, people come here to fish, swim in Sikome Lake, and have barbecues. Locals also hit the trails in the winter for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Just be aware the park closes between 6pm-10pm depending on the time of year.

4. Explore the nightlife of Kensington

Located in the northwest part of the city, Kensington is a tiny business district full of trendy shops, bars, and restaurants. Whether you’re seeking a quiet pub, an outdoor patio, or a fun-filled night of dancing, you’ll find it here. Kensington Pub, Winebar Kensington, and Container Bar are all great spots to hang out for their cozy atmosphere and unique decor.

5. Go brewery hopping

If you’re a craft beer lover, Calgary has a huge number of brewpubs, small breweries, and even a Craft Beer Market. Citizen Brewing Company, Cold Garden Beverage Company, and Big Rock are some of my favorites. You can also do a brewery hopping tour with Canadian Craft Tours to 3-4 different breweries for 109 CAD.

6. Watch the Calgary Flames

Hockey is a religion in Canada, and the folks in this city take their hockey very seriously. Calgary has one of 7 Canadian teams in the NHL so check and see if there’s a game on during your visit. Tickets start around 37 CAD but you can also just find a busy pub or bar to grab a beer and watch the game with locals.

7. Wander Eau Claire Market

This indoor market has something for everyone, including a variety of upscale shops, restaurants, and a food court. In the summer, there’s a playground and a wading pool for kids. Buskers are everywhere making balloon animals, performing music, or even putting on puppet shows. Eau Claire is also the festival district, so there is often some sort of community event taking place (usually concerts). It’s a bit cheesy, but it’s a fun spot if you’re traveling with family.

8. See the Family of Man Sculptures

This collection of ten aluminum cast sculptures (some weighing as much as 1,500 pounds and measuring 21 feet tall) makes for quite the sight to see surrounded by skyscrapers and office buildings in downtown Calgary. Originally designed by Mario Armengol and displayed at the Expo 67 World’s Fair in Montreal, these sculptures were later presented and dedicated to the city in 1969.

9. Check out the Canada Olympic Park

Calgarians are an active bunch. On Friday afternoons in the winter, you’ll see SUVs and trucks loaded up with ski gear leaving town for the mountains. The Olympic Park is where many of them get their start with winter sports. This ski hill and training/competition complex serves as a tribute to the 1988 Olympic Games and is mostly used as a training ground for young athletes. If you’re here in the winter, sign up for a downhill or cross-country ski lesson, which costs about 75 CAD for 90 minutes. You can even try the bobsled or luge!

10. Head to the top of the Calgary Tower

Built in 1967, the Calgary Tower stands 191 meters (626 feet) and commemorates Canada’s Centennial. It’s the centerpiece of the city and at the top, you’ll get uninterrupted views straight to the Rocky Mountains. Plus, the glass floor at the observation deck is thrilling (and terrifying). A ticket to the top is 19 CAD if you buy online and 21 CAD at the ticket window.

11. Visit the Heritage Park Historical Village

This heritage park is like a living museum. It showcases Western Canadian history from the 1860s to the 1950s. You can ride a steam train, learn how to make old-fashioned ice cream, chat with actors dressed up as prairie settlers, explore First Nations history, and take a horse-drawn wagon ride. It’s another one of those somewhat cheesy experiences, but you’ll learn a lot and it’s fun for kids. Tickets are 30 CAD.

12. Take a food tour

If you want to sample the finest foods that Calgary has to offer, take a food tour with Alberta Food Tours. They have several different excursions, including a Calgary Farmers’ Market tour and a walk through the Inglewood neighborhood. You can try poutine, cheeses, charcuterie, sweet treats, a few drinks, and more throughout the evening. Food Tours run during the high season until October and cost 95 CAD. There is also a self-guided tour all year round using their app for only 45 CAD, which is 2.5 hours long and includes some tastings as well as discounts from several of their business partners.

Calgary Travel Costs

A sunny summer day overlooking Calgary, Canada

Hostel prices – There are only a couple of hostels in Calgary. A bed in a room with 4-6 beds is 30-45 CAD per night while a dorm with 8 beds or more costs about 40 CAD.

Private hostel rooms start from 90 CAD per night for two people but can go as high as 175 CAD. During the Stampede, prices shoot up by about 50% and sell out months in advance, so make sure you book ahead.

For those traveling with a tent, camping is available outside the city for 30 CAD per night. This gets you a basic plot without electricity. RV plots cost around 55 CAD per night.

Budget hotel prices – Budget hotels start at 90 CAD, but these aren’t near the city center. For something closer to downtown, expect to pay at least 120 CAD per night. Free Wi-Fi, AC, TV, and a coffee/tea maker are usually included.

Airbnb is available everywhere in Calgary, with a private room starting at 50-65 CAD per night. An entire home/apartment averages 90-125 CAD per night. Prices double when not booked in advance.

During the summer months, there is also the option of renting a dorm room from a university. Rooms are generally available from early May to late August and offer access to on-campus services (laundry, parking). Mount Royal University has single rooms starting from 109 CAD per night.

Food – Overall, the food here is a collage of dishes from other cultures, owing to the country’s diverse history of immigration. In Calgary, beef is the go-to meat since half of the entire country’s beef supply comes from Alberta. Bison is also common, as are fresh berries in the summer. More general Canadian staples include beaver tails (fried dough with fresh maple syrup), Canadian bacon, poutine (fries with gravy and cheese curd), and the oddly tasty ketchup chips.

For the city’s best eats, hit the food trucks. Calgary has an epic food truck scene, and their locations change daily. Download the Street Food Calgary app to follow the trucks in real time.

You can find pizza by the slice for 4 CAD. Larger meals like taco salad or curry cost around 11 CAD.

A combo meal at McDonald’s costs about 12 CAD. Pubs and chain restaurants are very reasonable at about 20 CAD for a meal with a drink.

Higher-end restaurants set you back around 60 CAD if you also order an appetizer and a drink.

A glass of wine is around 9 CAD while beer is 7 CAD. A latte/cappuccino costs around 4.75 CAD. Bottled water costs 2 CAD.

If you cook for yourself, expect to spend around 50-60 CAD per week on groceries. This gets you basic staples like pasta, rice, produce, and some meat.

Some of my favorite places to eat in Calgary include CRAFT Beer Market, Holy Grill, Bridgette Bar, and Peters’ Drive In.

Backpacking Calgary Suggested Budgets

If you’re backpacking Calgary, expect to spend about 75 CAD per day. This budget assumes you’re staying in a hostel, cooking all your meals, taking public transportation to get around, limiting your drinking, and doing mostly free activities like hanging out in the parks and wandering Stephen Avenue. Add 10-15 CAD extra per day if you plan on drinking.

On a mid-range budget of 155 CAD per day, you can stay in a private Airbnb room, eat out more (but still cook some meals), rent a bicycle to get around and take the occasional taxi, enjoy a couple drinks, and visit more attractions like the zoo. If you plan to visit during the Stampede, add in another 66 CAD per day.

On a “luxury” budget of 315 CAD per day or more, you can stay in a hotel, eat out for all your meals, drink more, rent a car, and do whatever tours and activities you want. This is just the ground floor for luxury though. The sky is the limit!

Keep in mind that many of these prices (especially accommodations) increase by 50% during Stampede time!

You can use the chart below to get some idea of how much you need to budget daily, depending on your travel style. Keep in mind these are daily averages — some days you’ll spend more, some days you’ll spend less (you might spend less every day). We just want to give you a general idea of how to make your budget. Prices are in CAD.

Calgary Travel Guide: Money-Saving Tips

Calgary is not a cheap city. If you stick to mostly free activities, you’ll save some money but otherwise, things here are pricey. It’s one of the more expensive cities in Canada and it’s tough to visit on a limited budget. Nevertheless, here are some tips to help you save money in Calgary:

  • Stay with a local – If you plan ahead, you can usually find a Couchsurfing host to give you a free place to stay. You’ll not only save money but you’ll get to connect with a local insider who can share their tips and advice.
  • Take a free walking tour – Walking tours are a great way to get familiar with a city and its culture. Walk the YYC is the only free walking tour in town, but it’s a good one! You can also book a Calgary Greeter — a local volunteer who walks you around the city.
  • Avoid the Calgary Stampede – If you’re not dying to see the Stampede, avoid the dates around this event. Prices are higher everywhere. On the other hand, if you are here during Stampede, take advantage of the city’s many free pancake breakfasts (stampedebreakfast.ca).
  • Look for free events – Most of Calgary’s street festivals are free to attend, and there are free events year-round. Check out Visit Calgary’s website for their up-to-date event listings!
  • Spend your time in nature – With its abundance of outdoor activities, walking/biking trails, and relaxing parks, if you spend most of your time soaking up Calgary’s big nature you’ll save a lot of cash.
  • Bring a water bottle – The tap water here is safe to drink so bring a reusable water bottle to save money. LifeStraw makes a reusable bottle with a built-in filter to ensure your water is always safe and clean.

Where to Stay in Calgary

There are only a few hostels in Calgary so be sure to book early if you can. Here are my suggested places to stay:

  • HI Calgary City Centre
  • Wicked Hostels Calgary
  • HI Kananaskis (located west of Calgary, near the mountains)
  • HI Lake Louise (Banff)

How to Get Around Calgary

A quiet street in Banff, Alberta with towering mountains in the distance

Public transportation – Calgary has a well-connected bus system. Use cash to purchase a ticket on the bus (exact change required), or buy tickets at many drug stores, supermarkets, and corner shops. Fares are 3.60 CAD one way, or you can pay 11.25 CAD for a day pass (which is the best deal). One-way fares are valid for 90 minutes.

Calgary also has two Light Rail Transit (LRT) lines known as the C-Train. You can buy tickets with cash or credit card at any C-Train station, and ticket prices cost the same as the bus. You can ride the C-Train for free in Calgary’s downtown core between the City Hall Station and Downtown West/Kerby Station, but make sure you have a ticket as soon as you leave the free zone (a section downtown where fares are free between 3rd Street East and 11th Street West along 7 Avenue).

Taxi – Taxis are not cheap here. Their base rate is 4 CAD, and it’s an additional 1.93 CAD per kilometer afterward. Prices add up fast so skip the taxis here if you can!

Ridesharing – In addition to taxis, you can also use Uber to get around Calgary. It’s cheaper, but it’s still going to break the bank if you use it often, so stick to public transportation as much as possible.

Bicycle – Calgary has more cycling paths than anywhere in North America, with nearly 850 kilometers (528 miles) of pathways! Plus, most major streets have designated biking lanes. Lime Bike is a public bike-share program that lets you rent an e-bike to get around. Just download the app, search for a bike nearby, and unlock it for 1 CAD. After that, it’s 0.30 CAD per minute to ride, meaning a 30-minute journey costs about 10 CAD. If you’d like to take a bike out for longer, Sports Rent offers rentals for 35 CAD per day.

Car rental – Car rentals can be found for around 40 CAD per day for a multi-day rental. However, unless you’re leaving the city to explore I wouldn’t suggest renting one. Parking adds up and the bus can get you anywhere you need to go on a budget!

When to Go to Calgary

Late spring and summer in Calgary are the best times to visit, especially between May and early September. There’s so much going on in the city, and everyone is outdoors making the most of it. The average daily temperature is around 23°C (73.4°F), but it’s often higher than 30°C (86°F). Calgary is never really overcrowded with visitors compared to places like Toronto and Vancouver (except during Stampede in July).

Things start cooling off considerably in the fall; don’t be surprised if you see snow in September. Winters are cold, with average temperatures hovering around -11 to -14°C (12-6.8°F). This doesn’t discourage Calgarians in the slightest, however, and you’ll find most people hitting the slopes around Kananaskis and Banff on their time off.

If you’re into winter sports, embrace the cold and take advantage of the near-constant perfect snow conditions.

If the national parks are your priority, aim for a spring or fall visit. The parks are bursting with people in the summer. Additionally, try to skip weekend visits as that’s when the parks are busiest.

How to Stay Safe in Calgary

Calgary is a very safe city. Violent crime here is very rare. Your greatest risk is petty theft, such as pickpocketing, but even that is rare. Just keep your valuables secure and out of reach at all times just to be safe.

The eastern part of downtown (east of City Hall) is a bit sketchy at night, so avoid walking through that area alone.

If you’re not used to severe winter weather, make sure you bring lots of layers and appropriate clothing if you’re visiting in the winter. Avoid staying outside for too long if you’re not adequately protected. It gets cold!

Solo female travelers should feel safe here, however, the standard precautions apply (never leave your drink unattended at the bar, never walk home alone intoxicated, etc.).

Scams here are rare, but if you’re worried about getting ripped off you can read about common travel scams to avoid here.

If you experience an emergency, dial 911 for assistance.

The most important piece of advice I can offer is to purchase good travel insurance. Travel insurance will protect you against illness, injury, theft, and cancellations. It’s comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong. I never go on a trip without it as I’ve had to use it many times in the past.

Calgary Travel Guide: The Best Booking Resources

These are my favorite companies to use when I travel. They consistently have the best deals, offer world-class customer service and great value, and overall, are better than their competitors. They are the companies I use the most and are always the starting point in my search for travel deals.

  • Hostelworld – This is the best hostel accommodation site out there with the largest inventory, best search interface, and widest availability.
  • Booking.com – The best all around booking site that constantly provides the cheapest and lowest rates. They have the widest selection of budget accommodation. In all my tests, they’ve always had the cheapest rates out of all the booking websites.
  • Get Your Guide – Get Your Guide is a huge online marketplace for tours and excursions. They have tons of tour options available in cities all around the world, including everything from cooking classes, walking tours, street art lessons, and more!
  • SafetyWing – Safety Wing offers convenient and affordable plans tailored to digital nomads and long-term travelers. They have cheap monthly plans, great customer service, and an easy-to-use claims process that makes it perfect for those on the road.
  • LifeStraw – My go-to company for reusable water bottles with built-in filters so you can ensure your drinking water is always clean and safe.
  • Unbound Merino – They make lightweight, durable, easy-to-clean travel clothing.
  • Top Travel Credit Cards – Points are the best way to cut down travel expenses. Here’s my favorite point earning credit cards so you can get free travel!

  • Ribbon Creek Loop
  • Bill Hill Springs
  • Troll Falls
  • Johnston Canyon and Ink Pots
  • Upper Kananaskis Lake
  • Chester Lake
  • Galatea Creek
  • Fescue Trail
  • Grotto Canyon
  • Elbow Falls

Planning to conquer these amazing hikes near Calgary with your RV? Make sure you’re properly covered with comprehensive Calgary RV Insurance

1. Ribbon Creek Loop

This popular trail departs from the Ribbon Creek Day Use area just over an hour from downtown Calgary . It’s a popular destination but has a fair amount of parking. The trail begins at the far end of the parking lot marked by a sign explaining the history of the area. Follow the trail alongside the creek winding through the forest and taking in the mountain peaks with this easy 5.6km loop. You’ll cross several bridges but the overall elevation gain is only 226 metres keeping this a short easy hike. You can also bike this trail.

Ribbon Creek Loop is an excellent choice for early in the season and is great for families.  It is well signed but take care you don’t continue on to Rainbow Falls. The trail becomes quite difficult and is 25 kilometres round trip – not for you if you’re looking for something easy!

At the trailhead there are various picnic tables as well as pit toilets and a shelter. You’re nearby Kananaskis Village as well if you’d like to grab lunch.

Enjoy peace of mind on the trails. Get a free RV or travel insurance quote.

2. Big Hill Springs

This small provincial park is a prairie oasis to the northwest of Calgary. Only a 40-minute drive from downtown  The trail here is a 1.6 km loop but it’s a wonderful little adventure. Enjoy the woods prairie creek and waterfall along with the many dogs who enjoy the trail. It’s short and sweet but a good place to explore and wander.

If you’re interested in wildlife it’s a good place for birdwatching. Deer also frequent the area. There is parking washrooms and interpretive information as well. It’s simplicity and nature features make it ideal for families. You can  learn more about the park here  .

3. Troll Falls

This trail is very popular and can be broken up into different stages. The first stage from the parking lot to the lower falls is a very short easy hike. It winds through the woods to a cliff’s edge with a beautiful waterfall. During winter it freezes solid. This takes about an hour from the trailhead covering a distance of 3.4 kilotmetres with an elevation gain of only 150 metres.

Take care around the waterfall and the cliff’s edge. There are signage and fencing blocking you from climbing – heed these warnings as it is dangerous. There is an (unsanctioned) trail if you backtrack from the lower falls.

This second part of the hike follows a trail up the backside of the cliff. It is steep and can be very slippery so proceed with caution. It will lead you to the upper pools and falls.

Continue along this unsanctioned but well-travelled trail. The going is a little tougher with a few more obstacles and a less-defined trail. If you prefer to take your motorcycle with you, it’s advisable to reach out to your motorcycle insurance broker in Calgary to ensure that you are adequately covered under your policy. You will see views of the mountains as well as more of the lovely creek and various upper falls. In the winter it freezes into an ice wonderland – but it can be very slippery. Keep in mind that the ice may not be frozen solid – stick to the trail!

This hike is only  an hour and 15 minutes from downtown Calgary   located very near Nakiska and Kananaskis Village. It’s a very popular hike so you may have to park down the road. This trail is great year round but is best enjoyed during the winter for the incredible ice falls (and as a bonus it’s less busy).

Winter adventures require extra caution. Get winter sports coverage with your RV insurance.

Troll Falls

4. Johnston Canyon and Ink Pots

This popular trail is another one best enjoyed in the shoulder seasons. An hour and 40 minutes to 2 hours 10 minutes away  from downtown Calgary  (depending on traffic) this hike is well worth the drive. It’s very busy on weekends and parking can be tough (you can also start this hike from the Moose Meadows trailhead). Get there early or plan to go mid-week especially in the summer.

The total trail is 11.7 kilometres with just over 600 metres in elevation gain. Though it’s longer it’s still quite an easy hike. You can always turn back at the upper falls as well.

Follow the Johnston Canyon hike with its boardwalks through the canyon alongside the water. This is a stunning hike and it only gets better when you arrive at the lower falls. There’s a bridge to a small cave that will let you get quite close to the falls themselves (although it can get very crowded during a busy day).

Continue up the trail to the upper falls. In the end there is a catwalk bringing you closer to the falls. In the winter it freezes to become an ice fall and you can see ice climbers tackling the challenge nearly every day.

Once you’ve had your fill of the falls trackback until you find a spur trail. This will take you to the trail connecting from Moose Meadows. Here you’ll begin to climb uphill for a bit and then you’ll come across the meadows and lakes that make up the Ink Pots. The clear colourful lakes are fed from mineral springs and don’t freeze.

Johnston Canyon and Ink Pots

5. Upper Kananaskis Lakes

This scenic hike is an excellent choice if you’re looking to stretch your legs and enjoy nature without too much elevation gain. It’s also the most difficult trail on this list. Covering a distance of 15.7 kilometres for the entire loop you can always turn back partway through. The views truly are incredible between the lake and the mountains. There are also bridges across the Kananaskis River and Sarrail Creek waterfalls meadows rockfall and forest. Make sure you’re prepared for bears with bear spray and making noise as you hike as they frequent this area.

You can begin this hike from two spots: the North Interlakes Day Use area or the Upper Lake Day Use area. From downtown Calgary the former is  just over a 2 hour drive   while the latter is  around the 2 hour mark  . You can do the hike in either direction although counter-clockwise is recommended if you begin in the morning.

Upper Kananaskis Lakes

6. Chester Lake

This is a stunning hike in Kananaskis Country. It’s quite popular and relatively easy around 10 kilometres and only 425 metres of elevation gain. This trail is closed between May 1 and June 28 although it is open the rest of the year.

Arriving at the end of your  2-hour drive from downtown   there is a parking lot at the trailhead with information and pit toilets. It can fill up so you may need to park on the road. The trailhead is at the far end of the parking lot entrance. It begins with a slight uphill but soon levels out. The forest gives way to an incredible meadow with exceptional mountain views. Soon you’ll reach the beautiful Chester lake. There is a trail around it although it is quite narrow.

Although busy in summer this is a truly fantastic hike with unparalleled scenery. It’s not too long or difficult either!

Enjoy peace of mind on your adventures. Get a free RV or travel insurance quote.

Chester Lake

7.Galatea Creek

Another longer but rewarding hike. Just over an hour from downtown Calgary  it’s a perfect option for a good day hike. There is a seasonal closure between April 1 and June 29.

On this hike you’ll walk through the forest crisscrossing the creek over many different bridges. You’ll have excellent views of mountain peaks valleys and lakes. This 14 kilometre hike is slightly more challenging with nearly 800 metres of elevation gain but overall this hike is quite straightforward. You end at Lillian Lake a serene spot to eat lunch before you begin your return trek.

You can also opt to climb up the switchback to the incredibly picturesque Galatea Lakes. This climb is steep and adds on an extra 300m and 3 kilometres round trip to your hike but it’s definitely worth it.

8. Fescue Trail

The Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area is a short 30 to 45 minute drive from downtown Calgary making it easily accessible even for a summer hike after work. There are a few trails here and you can easily make up your own adventure in this little park. We focus on the main loop which is around 5 kilometres with an elevation gain of only 120 metres.

Arrive at the parking lot and check out the entrance booth which has maps and information. It’s recommended to leave a donation and register before heading out to start your hike. Follow the signs for “Fescue Trail.” You’ll go through woods and meadows and eventually end at the top of a gentle hill with lovely views over the rolling foothills and prairies.

You may want to explore the other trails including the Mountain trail. This trail offers the best views of the mountains and Calgary. There are several other paths that meander through the woods as well. This is the perfect place for a quiet day spent in nature that isn’t too physically demanding.

9. Grotto Canyon

Just over an hour from downtown Calgary this is a short but interesting trail. Find the trailhead at Grotto Mountain Day Use area and follow the trail along the powerline. While the start of this hike is a little mediocre the rest of the hike makes up for it. Once you pass the industrial plant you’ll enter a narrow canyon and follow it along until you reach the pair of waterfalls.

This hike is a quick 4 kilometres with around 225 metres of elevation gain. You can see pictographs on the rock at several points although they can be hard to spot. Walking through the canyon itself is a cool experience and the falls are nice.

Once you reach the end of the trail there is another (unmaintained) path that leads up to some great valley views and hoodoos including one with a cave.

Unmaintained trails require extra caution. Get a free RV or travel insurance quote.

Grotto Canyon

10. Elbow Falls

The official Elbow Falls trail is 1 kilometre with under 50 metres of elevation gain making this an incredibly short and easy trail. But you can add length by following the river downstream and the falls river and surrounding scenery are more than worth the trip. Only an hour from downtown Calgary this is a great easy hike near the city.

Refugees need to repay for flight to Canada after arriving, but it's not that easy

Finding work, english language training are barriers to paying off travel loans.

easy travel calgary

Social Sharing

A year after their plane touches down in Canada, refugees are required to start repaying their travel loans. But it can be a challenge for larger families. Many are struggling to find meaningful work, cover rising costs, learn a new language and find their place in a new country.

Samiullah Ashna arrived in Calgary with his wife and five children two years ago, fleeing violence and persecution in Afghanistan.

It was a life-altering journey that took the 40-year-old father, his wife and their young kids — ages four, seven, nine, 11 and 13 — from Kabul to Islamabad and then on to Calgary.

easy travel calgary

Samiullah Ashna wants to pay his $19,400 travel loan, but he first needs to find a job

As government-assisted refugees, they were granted permanent residence status as soon as they arrived and were provided essential supports for up to 12 months. However, after a year, the federal benefits end and their travel loan payments start.

The Immigration Loans Program provides refugees with access to funding to cover a number of expenses, including travel to Canada, establishment assistance and the fee for the right of permanent residence.

In Ashna's case, the total bill is $19,400.

"To be honest, it's like a huge amount for all newcomers," he said.

Ashna wants to pay back every penny — and he's already paid $2,200.

A copy of a statement of account for Samiullah Ashna's travel loan.

Ashna says he's applied for roughly 100 jobs, and the search continues.

He says many fellow Afghans have settled for work in warehouses or driving for Uber or food delivery apps. He has also applied for those jobs but hasn't received any responses, let alone a job interview.

'People are struggling'

The director of resettlement and integration services with the Calgary Catholic Immigration Society (CCIS) says pressure from the cost of housing, utilities, food, clothing and other essentials is squeezing most everyone, including refugees.

CCIS provides support for all newcomers, including pre-arrival planning, airport greetings, housing, medical, employment and community integration services.

"With the transportation loan, we have heard that some people are struggling to start paying back," said Bindu Narula, who is in charge of resettlement and integration for the society.

The benefits under the government's  Resettlement Assistance Program  can include a household startup allowance and monthly income support payments. When those benefits end after a year, families can transition to provincial income support programs if they haven't been able to find work.

Bindu Narula is sitting at her desk with her hands clasped together, resting on a piece of paper.

Narula says her organization has helped people renegotiate the terms of their loans. She says the federal government is flexible when it comes to lowering payments or extending the amount of time that's needed to pay off the loan, and there is no interest on the loans.

Forgive the loans?

At the Centre for Newcomers, the president and CEO says most refugees are "itching" to work and want to take care of themselves and their families. But in some cases it can be difficult.

The centre is a resource for immigrants and refugees of all nationalities who are settling in Calgary.

Centre president Anila Umar says some refugees face complex needs, including post-war trauma, disabilities and chronic illnesses. She says that in those cases, travel loan payments should be deferred or the loans forgiven altogether.

"The majority of refugees aren't using the full one year [of government benefits,] they're actually working, they're actually doing things. So for the ones that aren't actually able to pay, they actually have real needs," Ulmar said.

In 2022, Canada resettled 47,600 refugees, the largest number in the world, according to the International Organization for Migration, a United Nations agency. The trend continued in 2023, with another 51,000 refugees, according to Canada Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

The chief executive officer of Immigrant Services Calgary, an agency that helps newcomers get established in Calgary by connecting people to various services and programs, doesn't believe the loans should be forgiven in specific cases, or for specific groups. Instead, Nawal Al-Busaidi would like to see adequate supports to establish refugees' independence.

"By giving them accessibility to good opportunities, to jobs that are paid equally and equitably, I don't believe that the loan should be forgiven. But if they are forgiven, they should be forgiven for everybody and not just one group and not the other," said Al-Busaidi.

David Matas, an immigration and refugee lawyer and author based in Winnipeg, says there should be more flexibility in easing the burden on private and government-sponsored refugees.

He says private groups can sponsor only so many refugees before it impacts the number of people allowed to settle here. And he says government-sponsored refugees who face ongoing resettlement challenges should be given options to repay the money.

"Not in every case, but in cases where the refugees really can't get off the ground, it might make sense … to allow for other sources of payment besides the refugees themselves," said Matas.

Deferred, not cancelled

In an email, IRCC was asked under what circumstances repayment can be extended or forgiven.

"If repaying a loan is causing a person to experience financial hardship, an individual may have loan repayments deferred, vary the amount of the payments or extend the repayment period," said Mary Rose Sabater, a communications advisor with IRCC.

To the end of March, she says, there were 43,227 outstanding loans. She says repayment terms for loans exceeding $4,800 allow up to eight years for repayment.

Wali Mohammad Dawari stands with five of his seven children in the living room of their Calgary home.

Wali Mohammad Dawari and his family were part of that surge of refugees who settled in Canada in 2022. His wife and seven children fled Afghanistan and arrived in Canada in March of that year.

His children range in age from two to 26, and three of his older children are working part-time while going to post-secondary school. Dawari works part-time with Immigrant Services Calgary. He says everyone pools their money together to support the family and slowly chip away at the $15,000 travel loan that he says he owes.

"When you have a number of people working together collectively, they will survive much better than those people that are single," he said.

Through his work, he sees the struggles that many refugees are still encountering — even two years after their arrival. One of the challenges has been the lengthy waitlist for English language training.

"There is not that much capacity to cover all newcomers at once," said Dawari.

"Most of the newcomers are waiting six, seven, eight months to get enrolled in one of the English classes."

Job hunt continues

That's one of the big challenges for Ashna, who is still looking for work, with the added pressure of covering all of his rising expenses. He rents a home for $2,800 per month, plus $500-$600 for utilities. His family is now receiving provincial income support to help cover the costs while his job search continues.

Back home, he worked at the British and Canadian embassies in various programs that help empower women. So far in Calgary, he's still waiting to find work and has been taking courses in business administration.

"To be honest, recently I am applying for every job, like warehouse job … delivery driver, because I haven't received one response from other organization — nothing," he said.

Samiullah Ashna's five children are pictured in a Calgary park.

Ashna says many friends in the local Afghan community are professionals who have settled for low-paying, unskilled jobs, and it's been frustrating to get what he calls "Canadian experience."

"All of them are disappointed," he said.

"My message for the employment agency: please consider these people who came to Canada who are newcomer, they have lots of experience, they have good qualification."

He says he has no regrets moving to Canada, which he calls a great country for immigrants. He just wants an opportunity to prove that he can contribute in a meaningful way and settle his outstanding debt.

Inside Calgary's 5 most expensive homes for sale right now

A look at 3811 Ninth St. S.W. (Realtor.ca)

The Calgary Real Estate Board says May home sales fell 0.8 per cent from last year as 3,092 properties changed hands, driven by declines in lower-priced detached and semi-detached homes.

Despite the downtick in sales, the board says activity was still 34 per cent higher than long-term trends for the month.

The benchmark price across all home types was $605,300 for May — up 9.5 per cent from a year earlier and nearly one per cent higher than April.

England Euro 2024 squad guide: More justifiable tournament favourites than ever before

England Euro 2024 squad guide: More justifiable tournament favourites than ever before

England head into Euro 2024 amid a groundswell of expectation. Should Gareth Southgate’s team not go all the way, sympathy may prove to be in short supply.

The manager

This will be Gareth Southgate’s fourth major tournament with England. No manager has taken the team to as many since Sir Alf Ramsey. Whatever happens in Germany, Southgate is the most consequential England manager of the modern era and this will be the tournament that defines his legacy and his future.

go-deeper

UEFA Euro 2024 team guides: Everything you need to know about the squads

His contract expires at the end of this year and if England disappoint in Germany, that will be the end of his eight-year tenure. He may leave with a sense of not quite fulfilling the resources available to him, but if England win — or get close — this summer, then a contract extension is on the cards and one last attempt at the World Cup in the U.S. in two years’ time.

Gareth Southgate, England

Because Southgate has been in post for so long, public opinion has hardened between his supporters and detractors. To some, he is the saviour of English football, the spokesman of the soul of the national game, the man who has restored this team to their place in national life. But to others, his negativity and lack of imagination have stymied a new golden generation. Maybe only triumph in Berlin on July 14 will settle this debate.

go-deeper

Southgate finally gets ruthless - now England's new generation must step up

The household name in waiting

Todd Boehly said earlier this month that he hopes Cole Palmer would be a household name in the U.S. soon and that is certainly the direction his career is heading after a brilliant first season at Chelsea .

Nobody knew Palmer was capable of a season like this: 22 goals and 10 assists from 28 Premier League starts. He only has two England appearances to his name, both as a sub, but even if he does not force his way into Southgate’s starting XI, he could be a transformative bench option. His nose for goal, his calmness under pressure, and his ability to score from unusual angles and situations make him a potential match-winner.

Breaking down the brilliance of Chelsea's Cole Palmer - 'Within one touch, he can hurt you'

Two things stand out. Firstly, the experience in the spine of this team: Jordan Pickford , John Stones , Harry Maguire , Kyle Walker , Harry Kane (and Kieran Trippier and Jordan Henderson) have been consistent in tournaments ever since 2018. They know how it works, they know how to beat good teams, how to win penalty shootouts, and that nous will be invaluable this summer.

The other is that no England manager has gone to an international tournament with more attacking firepower than Southgate now has. Kane scored 44 goals in 45 games for Bayern Munich this season. Jude Bellingham has been a revelation at Real Madrid . Phil Foden has won the FWA Footballer of the Year. Bukayo Saka has been integral to Arsenal ’s excellence. For most England players, this tournament has come at the right time.

How to follow Euro 2024 on  The Athletic …

  • Latest Euro 2024 news here
  • Euro 2024 fixtures and schedule
  • Euro 2024 team guides: Everything you need to know

For all the power England have up front, the spine of the team is a bit short of options.

Southgate is in the same position he has been for years: relying on John Stones and Harry Maguire at centre-back. Neither of them has ever let England down, but Maguire has had a tough year at United — and yet there is no real established understudy to them.

Marc Guehi is probably the best of the rest — and has six England starts to his name — but it feels too soon for him to step in as a first-choice starter. There is no obvious left-back, with Luke Shaw recovering from injury and no clear alternative. Kieran Trippier, who has played there before for England, has had a difficult season at Newcastle , and in central midfield, there is no obvious partner for Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham . England’s strength in depth is not evenly distributed.

Kieran Trippier, England

Thing you didn’t know

Southgate is learning German to prepare him for the Euros, something the England manager revealed in an interview with The Athletic earlier this season . He said he was motivated to be a “good tourist” whenever he was abroad and felt very aware of his lack of German when he was there for the draw for the Euros, and on reconnaissance trips to find England’s base.

“I was conscious I actually hadn’t got a clue,” he said, “I wasn’t very proud of that.” And while Southgate knows some French and Spanish, he has downloaded Duolingo to help him with his German. Last week, Southgate revealed at an event that he has already racked up a 70-day streak on the popular language-learning app.

Expectations back home

Southgate has done well resetting the public mood since taking over, trying to tell people that England do not have the automatic right to win major tournaments. But after a semi-final, a final and a quarter-final in the last three tournament campaigns, it feels as if expectations have reinflated again.

No one comes into this European Championship with a stronger recent record or with better players. England have done everything under Southgate except for winning a major tournament. In the past, it has been unfair to demand that Southgate lead England to glory. This time, it feels more appropriate.

The other factor is that this will be the first tournament with easy access for travelling England fans since Euro 2016. There were not many fans at the Russia or Qatar World Cups — and little travel for Euro 2020 — but this will be different. It may give England more partisan support in the grounds, but it may also create security and policing headaches that will hang over the tournament.

England’s provisional squad

Goalkeepers: Dean Henderson ( Crystal Palace ), Jordan Pickford ( Everton ), Aaron Ramsdale (Arsenal), James Trafford ( Burnley ).

Defenders: Jarrad Branthwaite (Everton), Lewis Dunk ( Brighton ), Joe Gomez ( Liverpool ), Marc Guehi (Crystal Palace), Ezri Konsa ( Aston Villa ), Harry Maguire ( Manchester United ), Jarell Quansah (Liverpool), Luke Shaw (Manchester United), John Stones ( Manchester City ), Kieran Trippier (Newcastle), Kyle Walker (Manchester City).

Midfielders: Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool), Conor Gallagher (Chelsea), Curtis Jones (Liverpool), Kobbie Mainoo (Manchester United), Adam Wharton (Crystal Palace), Declan Rice (Arsenal).

Forwards: Jude Bellingham ( Real Madrid ), Jarrod Bowen ( West Ham ), Eberechi Eze (Crystal Palace), Phil Foden (Manchester City), Jack Grealish (Manchester City), Anthony Gordon (Newcastle), Harry Kane (Bayern Munich), James Maddison ( Tottenham ), Cole Palmer (Chelsea), Bukayo Saka (Arsenal), Ivan Toney ( Brentford ), Ollie Watkins (Aston Villa).
