Comedian Dylan Moran locks in Australian tour for 2023

Comedian Dylan Moran is heading back to Australia in 2023 with his new show  We Got This.

The tour will kick off in Hobart on Wednesday 19th April before heading to Launceston, Melbourne, Adelaide, Canberra, Newcastle, Gold Coast, Brisbane, Perth, Sydney, and finally Woolongong.

The Perth show will be at the Perth Concert Hall on Monday 8th May 2023, with tickets for all shows on sale now.

We Got This , is Morans first full stand-up show since 2019’s acclaimed Dr. Cosmos, is the latest sideways glance at the folly of modern-day life from the Irish comedian, fuelled by the past two years that we’ve all been living.

“We are bruised. We are fucked up. We are all sore,” he says. “It’s not just the pandemic. It’s the times and how we’ve got through it.”

“Everybody’s very angry at politicians and they always are. But I’m angry at us, the way we’ve decided to live or what we’ve decided to put up with.” Moran said announcing the string of shows.

In particular, the multi-billion dollar tech corporations – the Facebooks and the Googles of this world – will be taking the brunt of his ire.

“I have to talk about it because it’s so enmeshed in the fabric of everything, now that we’re all having this major reaction,” Moran said.

“Look at the way we’ve been living.  Effectively, we’ve been in a miked prison cell, all sort of communicating on Zoom or whatever…  I can’t believe how docile and bovine whole populations are being with these tech realities that we’ve just accepted wholesale.”

The Irish comedian came to wide-spread popularity through his television show  Black Books that ran for four seasons. The program which originally ran from 2000-2004 has gained a whole new legion of fans since it was added to streaming service Netflix.

The show was pretty fantastic. This was my second time seeing him (the last time we drove 3 hours to Portland) and this time I invited a couple friends for the show, which they also thoroughly enjoyed. I think Dylan may have been getting irritated by the crowd just a bit due to their cheering interrupting his show, but that's understandable. The worst part of the show was the guy laughing obnoxiously loud behind me.

Dylan Moran will bring his Australian tour to Newcastle

The acerbic wit of Dylan Moran will be front and centre when he takes to the stage in Newcastle in April 2023 as part of his We Got This national tour.

A BAFTA and Perrier award-winning comedian, Moran achieved cult status after co-writing and starring in the British sitcom, Black Books .

Black Books ran for three seasons between 2000 and 2004 and saw Moran play Bernard Black , the misanthropic, frequently inebriated owner of an eponymous second-hand bookstore.

Since his early days in comedy, Moran’s reputation as “the Oscar Wilde of comedy” has grown exponentially, spreading across the globe.

Moran, who counts painting and writing poetry among his many artistic disciplines, seems keen to get back out in front of an audience after the last few years in an effort to unpack what just happened to the world.

“Everybody’s very angry at politicians and they always are. But I’m angry at us, the way we’ve decided to live or what we’ve decided to put up with,” He said.

“It’s not just the pandemic. It’s the times and how we’ve got through it.

“I have to talk about it because it’s so enmeshed in the fabric of everything, now that we’re all having this major reaction.”

Dylan Moran likes performing to packed houses — but he doesn't want everyone there

For a man who is sometimes labelled a moody misanthrope, Dylan Moran is not afraid to concede he quite likes performing in front of a live audience.

In fact, during COVID-19 lockdowns, the Irish comedian and actor came to crave the stage in a way that took him by surprise.

"Not performing live was horrible. You don't realise how much a part of your being it is until you're not doing it," he told ABC Radio Adelaide's Stacey Lee and Nikolai Beilharz this week.

"It didn't agree with me, lockdown — I didn't like that whole thing of not seeing anybody or not being with any other human beings."

Moran is currently preparing for his first tour to Australia since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the show, We Got This, is partly a reflection of various frustrations that have built up over the past three years.

He is not one of those comics whose jokes regularly court controversy, nor one who routinely attracts the attention of tabloid newspapers after apologising — or refusing to apologise — for something he's said.

But his brand of humour can be dark, cynical, scathing and uncompromising, and one thing he is not prepared to do is soften the edge to broaden the appeal.

"I'll talk to anybody but the thing is, the idea of appealing to everybody is not appealing at all," he said.

"Why would you want to do that?

"How do you not be yourself? I don't know. Because I'm not interested in doing that."

Indeed, while Moran wants people to attend his upcoming tour, there's a caveat — the invitation isn't an open one.

"There are some people I actively don't want to come to the show. I've sent them letters," he joked.

"It's like when you don't know what's expected of you and you're meeting people maybe for the first time, or you're in some new environment, you tend to feel pretty awkward and anxious and think pretty critically of yourself because you don't know what to do.

"If you want to please everybody all the time, you're going to feel like that all the time — so no thanks."

Stuck, but not in lockdown

For many people who found themselves stuck at home, the experience of enduring repeated COVID lockdowns may have temporarily turned them into mini-versions of Bernard Black, the bibulous, bedraggled, irascible and morose bookshop owner played by Moran in the sitcom Black Books.

But Moran wasn't one of them. While he admits he went a bit "batshit", he also used his time productively, writing a new five-part comedy series, entitled Stuck, for the BBC.

"That definitely mopped up some energy," he said.

"It was great fun to do, the production was great fun, it's got great talent in it, the cast are fantastic.

"I probably spent too long on it. It was like a guy in a garage with a motorbike."

The episodes are about a quarter of an hour long, and Moran believes that the trend towards more bite-sized "content" (a term he despises) will only become stronger.

"Everybody's on their phone, as you know, all the time," he said.

"You look at people — they're in the dentist chair, they're having babies, they're on their phone.

"You're going to get programs that are seven-minutes long, five-minutes long, three-minutes long, they're going to be made and they're going to be watched."

But as much as audiences might be changing their habits and curtailing their attention spans, Moran firmly believes the live stage show must, and will, go on.

"It's very nice when a bunch of us are together," he said.

"Laughter is different in a room together with lots of people."

He was even the first English-speaking comic to play St. Petersburg in Russia, with translators on hand to interpret for those who didn't speak English. He's since played in Estonia and Kazakhstan - "a really fascinating" experience, he adds, and one that "makes you very appreciative of having a government that functions [by] not leaning quite so heavily on fear".

Away from stand-up, Moran's comedy cult status has been assured for life after co-writing and starring in Black Books, the Channel 4 show that ran for three seasons between 2000 and 2004 and won him two BAFTA awards. Playing Bernard Black, the misanthropic, frequently inebriated owner of the eponymous second-hand bookstore, the show has gained a new following of late since appearing on streaming platform Netflix.

He calls it, with typical modesty, "part of the space junk orbiting the consciousness that's out there", though that's not to sound dismissive. He's deeply appreciative of the affection held for the show. "On some level, I'm pleased to have a satellite up there. But I'm really focused on what I'm doing here. And the work that's going on right now, obviously. Listen, if anybody enjoyed anything, I'm thrilled. Always. I really am. I mean that because that's the whole point of it."

Moran, who counts painting and writing poetry among his many artistic disciplines, also has a book underway, which he's had to put aside while preparing for the tour. "I mean, I just want to carry on working to be honest with you." For the moment, though, Moran needs to concentrate on putting the finishing touches to We Got This. And that requires some energy from the crowds too. "It's not an object that I haul there like it's a grand piano. It's a thing that's made when the audience arrive as well." Everyone, it seems, has their part to play.

Best known as the surly, cantankerous bookseller in Black Books, a TV series first produced in 2000 that then developed a cult following, Dylan Moran’s schtick as a stand-alone comic trades a lot on his erstwhile persona. Indeed, as it was in his latest tour to Melbourne, Moran’s on stage performance can appear inseparable to his role as Bernard Black.

They both share the shambolic mien, the perpetual grumpiness and the casual misanthropic worldview. In fact, the title of this particular production, We Got This , felt distinctly at odds with the material that came in dribs and drabs from Moran. It’s a phrase that normally inspires confidence, but here the show revealed more of the Irish comedian’s confusion about changes and progress in modern society. More than once he talked ironically about the trials of being a white, middle-aged, middle-class man in a world beset by gender fluidity and neurodiversity. Back when he was growing up, he reminded his audience (which ranged in age from 20 to 60-plus), men voted conservative, died of avoidable diseases and listened to Eagles covers.

Moran’s maudlin and desultory routine lacked cohesion and a clear narrative. Sometimes his one-liners hit home; other times you had to struggle to understand what his point actually was, so rambling was his delivery. When he introduced a keyboard to the proceedings, there was hope that the lacklustre tempo may become a bit more upbeat but, despite having a good voice, Moran is no musician. He relies, he pointed out, on the bass function, as he haphazardly pushed some keys and sang above the noise. Talk of gaining (and losing) sobriety garnered sympathetic responses from the crowd but disappointingly, for a showman of his calibre, there was no real heart or sustained storytelling in this stop/start, self-indulgent delivery.

We Got This lacked incisive, insightful commentary; the penis jokes and comments about the differences between men and women just seemed tired and uninspired. Listening to Moran hold forth about a range of topics, it seemed as though he was out of touch and struggling to remain relevant. The whole show actually felt like a montage of Grampa Simpson shaking his fist at the clouds – the meme that attests to a failure to understand and control one’s personal life or wider environment. More tragic than funny.

The multitalented Irish performer has announced a second local date on April 22 at Hamer Hall.

When faced with the ills of the modern day, sometimes all you can do is laugh. No one is better at making light of our existential frustrations than award-winning comedian Dylan Moran. 

In April and May 2023, he will be coming to town with his most recent act, We Got This. The tour, which is set to weave its way from Hobart to Auckland, will include two dates at Melbourne’s Hamer Hall on April 21 and 22.

Labeled the Oscar Wilde of comedy, Moran is best known for his unique brand of deadpan observational humour and poetic prose. He took home the coveted Perrier award in 1996, which helped to launch his decades-long career.

With his latest act, he’s got a bone to pick.

“Everybody’s very angry at politicians and they always are. But I’m angry at us, the way we’ve decided to live or what we’ve decided to put up with,” he says. He takes aim squarely at the overbearing social media companies that have come to be a fixture of our existence and our passive acceptance of the tech takeover.

“I have to talk about it because it’s so enmeshed in the fabric of everything, now that we’re all having this major reaction,” he says. “Look at the way we’ve been living. Effectively, we’ve been in a miked prison cell, all sort of communicating on Zoom or whatever… I can’t believe how docile and bovine whole populations are being with these tech realities that we’ve just accepted wholesale.”

No stranger to life on the road, Moran has dazzled fans from Köln to Kazakhstan (with the help of a trusty translator). We Got This will be his first full stand-up show since the highly acclaimed Dr Cosmos, which fans can stream online as an amuse-bouche for the upcoming shows. 

Aside from his stand-up career, Moran is also known as the co-writer and star of the hit British sitcom series, Black Books, where he played a grouchy bookstore owner. 

Messy-haired, nihilistic, and impossible not to love, Moran promises a joyously furious romp at his upcoming performances. Tickets are likely to sell out, so make sure you get your hands on yours as soon as you can.

Returning to Australia with all the flair of a growling octogenarian swirling a glass of wine in one hand, the brilliantly manic Dylan Moran has announced his brand new comedy tour Off the Hook will be stopping at 12 locations across the country this July to August.

The Irish comedian, who won our hearts as the creator and star of Black Books , is celebrated across the globe for his brilliant brand of rambling, brutally sharp stand-up comedy. Closure In Moscow Announce ‘The Church Of The Technochrist’ Tour

Music Feeds was announcing a run of shows from Melbourne prog-rock maestros Closure In Moscow as recently as June , but this Melbourne five-piece can’t seem to douse their love for the road. They’ll soon be embarking on a tour to promote their new single, The Church Of The Technochrist .

The boys are currently putting the finishing touches on their upcoming second album, Pink Lemonade . The follow-up to 2009’s First Temple , this is one of the most highly anticipated Australian releases of the year. The album is being produced in Melbourne by Tom Larkin of Shihad , whose manned the boards for The Getaway Plan and Calling All Cars .
