What is the best time to visit Visakhapatnam?

The best time to take a trip to this splendid place is in winter season i.e between October and March. The weather during this period is extremely pleasing and windy. There are major religious festivals like Visakha Utsav celebrated from October - December. There is no trace of humidity in the air enhancing the travelling experience even more. During summers it can get extremely torrid which might keep you from stepping out. Humidity and heat waves also accompany the region making it difficult to take a stroll or even go into the beach. Monsoon hits Vishakapatnam from july to september when the city receives heavy rainfall making it uncomfortable to travel around. Hence, summers and monsoon are not an ideal time to visit Visakhapatnam.

Visakhapatnam is such a beautiful city, with so much to offer. I’m dying to visit here after reading your blog. Thanks for sharing such a great collection of beautiful places to visit. I’m definitely saving it for later.

Such a great variety of things to do; from beaches to caves, taking in submarine museums and airplanes. The clean beach is a bonus too.

You make it sound so great! I would love to go to the waterfalls, the nature preserve and both museums. How convenient that the museums are right across the street from each other too!

I have been to a few submarine museums in the US, but they were all still in the water. This is the first time I see a submarine museum that is not submerged. Looks interesting and I wonder if it was painted silver in front originally?

Wow, it sounds like there’s so much to do in Visakhapatnam! I would definitely check out the museums (especially the submarine and coffee ones) and that waterfall is gorgeous!

Vizag looks like such a beautiful place. I especially love the wildlife sanctuary. Can’t wait to visit soon!

Oh wow..i would love to visit that sub..didn’t know such a thing existed!

Very well written blog, I never knew one can visit so many places in Vizag. I can see a kid will have loads of fun, visiting the submarine and aircraft museum. But the best part is Lambasingi, it looks too surreal and must-visit kinds. How much a 3 day trip will cost, with a decent staying option?

I have many friends in vizag but never got a chance to visit. Now you have given me a plenty of reasons to see the city. Museums look interesting especially the aircraft and coffee museum.

It has been decades I have visited Visakhapatnam, after reading your post I am sure what interests my family and choose accordingly.

Lol I have to admit, I was not expecting this to include a submarine! What a fun and unique museum!

I am so impressed with the variety of things to see in Visakhapatnam. The wildlife and nature is where I would want to spend most of my time, but those beaches and caves look fantastic too.

What an interesting place! I really like the submarine, and I think I would really enjoy visiting the Tribal Museum and learning about the cultures of the local tribes.

Went to Visakhapatnam from Hyderabad a couple of years back on my India visit. Loved Araku valley and the plantations. The submarine museum was unique. First time I ever entered into a submarine.

I love caves, waterfalls and wildlife, so would want to spend my time exploring that. My boys would love the aircraft and submarine museums. It sounds like we should visit the culture center if we come to the area as well to learn about the native people.

Your photo of Rushikonda Beach is amazing! I never thought of India as a beach destination, for me it’s more about the culture, the food and the temples… But to know that this is one of the cleanest beaches in India is very enticing!

Thanks for all your recommendations, this is a great resource!

Visakhapatnam certainly seems to have everything. I love beautiful beaches, but am more interested in the museums (especially the coffee museum!) and the caves. I would really like to visit this area. It looks beautiful but with so many interesting places to check out, it seems ideal for family visit.

We were sorry we did not get to visit the great beach areas in India when we visited. We certainly would head to Rushikonda Beach. As an ex-Navy guy, hubby would not miss the Naval Submarine or Aircraft Museums. I would bargain for a day trip to Katiki Falls or the Borra Caves in exchange for those museum days!

The Bora caves are SO BEAUTIFUL they remind me of Ruby Falls in Tennessee. Lambasing is quite eerie in a hauntingly beautiful way. This sounds like a great place to visit.

Beaches, wildlife and waterfalls, this place ticks plenty of must haves on my list. I can’t wait to visit.

11 Best Places To Visit In Araku Valley (+Vizag): A Hidden Gem

I went for a solo trip to this little-known hill station lying on the southeastern coast of India. As I hadn’t heard much about this place before, I didn’t have much expectation. However, after the trip, I realised how underappreciated this place was.

It blew my mind how this scenic hill station hasn’t been covered or talked about much among the traveller community in India, even today. And hence, I would like to give you an introduction to Araku Valley, also known as the Ooty of Andhra Pradesh.

Famous for its international hot air balloon festival, world-famous Arabica coffee beans and the deepest caves in India, Araku Valley is a hill station in Andhra Pradesh that is criminally underrated in India. There’s so much more this place offers that’ll make you realize how you’ve never heard of this place before.

I travelled from Hyderabad to Araku Valley on my own. In this guide, I would like to tell you the 6 best places to visit in Araku Valley along with the 5 best places to visit in Vizag, if you plan to come for a 4-day trip. I have included Vizag as well as it is the starting point for Araku Valley.

6. Padmapuram Botanical Garden

5. yarada beach and dolphin nose, 2. where to stay in araku valley, which is the best month to visit araku, where is araku valley (and vizag).

Araku Valley is a hill station in the Eastern Ghats known for its tribal population, lush green forests and numerous waterfalls. Located in Andhra Pradesh and close to the border of Orissa, the nearest major city to Araku Valley is Vizag, lying 111 km away from it.

The best way to reach Araku Valley is to travel to Vizag before making way for Araku Valley. Hence, I recommend you explore Vizag as well before heading off to Araku Valley.

Vizag, also known as Visakhapatnam, is the largest city and the financial capital of Andhra Pradesh. It is a coastal town in Andhra Pradesh, primarily known for its beaches and museums. As such, it offers a different experience to Araku Valley making your trip more wholesome.

6 best places to visit in Araku Valley

I covered Vizag during my first two days before I went to Araku Valley. I have talked about the 5 best places to visit in Vizag in the next section.

For this section, I would like to tell you the 6 best places to visit in Araku Valley in chronological order as I drove from Visakhapatnam to Araku Valley.

1. Borra Caves

places to visit in araku valley

I started my drive from Vizag at around 10 am. The drive was smooth as the roads were well-maintained and you’ll be passing through several villages en route to Araku Valley.

As you go further towards Araku Valley, you’ll be driving through mountain ranges and encountering hairpin bends as cool air starts surrounding you in no time.

My first destination was Borra Caves, which is a slight diversion from the road to Araku Valley.

Known for being one of the largest and deepest caves in India, Borra Caves is one of the most unique places to visit in Araku Valley.

best time to visit araku valley

This 150-million-year-old cave is filled with intriguing stalactite and stalagmite formations of limestone deposits. The caves were created due to the flow of the Gosthani river (which flows nearby) over the limestone area.

The cave was so deep that I spend close to an hour exploring it. There will be several places inside the cave where you may need to bend, crouch or maintain your head due to the irregular formations.

The different lights that are installed inside the cave further add to the ambience and bring out the best of the unique formations.

The only drawback to visiting Borra Caves is that you may find a lot of people inside the cave as it is highly commercialised. However, it is still worth visiting considering the visual delight you get inside the caves.

2. Katiki Waterfalls

vizag to araku valley

While coming back from Borra Caves, take a diversion to go to Katiki Waterfalls, which is only 7 km away. You can visit other waterfalls like Anantagiri and Chaparai in Araku Valley but they pale in comparison to Katiki Waterfalls.

Katiki Waterfalls derives its name from the Katiki village and originates from the Gosthani river. This 50-feet high waterfall flows through a lush green forest and the water is clear and white in hue.

Apart from the falls, you’ll also enjoy the adventurous hike and the scenic beauty surrounding you while hiking the hill. When you reach the falls, you can also take a dip there to re-energise yourself.

You can’t use your vehicle to reach the falls.

where is araku valley

You need to hire a jeep to travel from the Katiki Falls ticket counter and it costs INR 1,500 for 8 members (rates may vary). The jeep covers 5 km of mountain roads till you reach a railway track near Tunnel #44. From here, you have to cross this track and trek 1.5 km further up the hill.

This trek takes half an hour through a forest and the path is narrow and slippery. You’ll find several food kiosks on the way that serve snacks and beverages especially Bamboo Chicken and fresh Coconut Water.

Don’t carry much luggage as the path is steep and uneven. Depending on your pace, it can take up to 2-3 hours for the entire experience.

P.S. I couldn’t visit this amazing destination as I was short on time. But I assure you it will be one of your favourite places to visit in Araku Valley.

3. Araku Coffee Plantations/Galikonda View Point

hotels in araku valley

As I continued my drive towards Araku Valley, I kept ascending the mountains. After driving for 45 minutes, you’ll be greeted by the Araku Valley coffee plantations.

It starts on a stretch of road where you can stop your vehicle by the side and go for a short trek through the coffee plantations. There are also roadside stalls set up by locals where you can have coffee, and buy coffee powder and pepper.

As I’ve seen coffee plantations before, I decided to continue my journey and stopped my vehicle at Galikonda View Point, only 1.5 km ahead.

things to do in araku valley

Galikonda is the second-highest mountain in the Eastern Ghats and the highest in Andhra Pradesh. From Galikonda View Point, you can get a panoramic view of the mountain ranges and green valleys covered in clouds.

Here too, you can find roadside stalls from where you can get coffee, sweet corn and bamboo chicken.

If you’re a non-vegetarian, I highly recommend you try the bamboo chicken which is a local delicacy that is made by cooking chicken pieces inside a bamboo stem with spices.

Like Borra Caves, you’ll find many people who stop at Galikonda View Point for a break so be prepared for the crowd.

4. Araku Tribal Museum

araku valley coffee

From Galikonda View Point, Araku Valley is only half an hour. The ride to Araku Valley from here is a pleasant one.

You’ll be driving through a plateau with a wide expanse of land and mountains in the distant background. You’ll also find many resorts and camping tents on either side of the road.

The first stop I made at Araku Valley was the Araku Tribal Museum.

It was another highlight of the trip.

The Araku Tribal Museum gives you a peek inside the lives of the 19 tribes that live in Araku Valley. The purpose of the museum is to create awareness about the tribal lifestyle and culture in Araku Valley.

araku valley in andhra pradesh

You’ll find galleries depicting photos of tribal weddings, artefacts used by the tribals and the figurines of tribals interacting with each other in their day-to-day lives, among many things.

Overall, the museum is well-maintained and everything has been sculpted and preserved beautifully. Hence, I suggest you spend at least an hour here to get a good understanding of tribal life.

The tribal dance called Dhimsa is performed at 5 pm inside the premises.

There are some shops as well from where you can buy chocolates, coffee and other local produce and other shops where you can get local handicrafts and ornaments.

There are additional activities inside the museum like rope cycling, boating, ziplining, etc., if you’re interested.

5. Araku Coffee Museum

visakhapatnam to araku valley

If you’re a coffee-lover, you must visit the Araku Coffee Museum which is right next to the Araku Tribal Museum.

This small museum describes the origin and history of coffee from Ethiopia to Europe and India via Chikmagalur , Nilgiri and Araku Valley. All of this information is depicted via photos, figurines and sculptures much like the Tribal Museum.

You can also taste and buy different types of Araku Valley coffee products like coffee beans, coffee powder and chocolates.

You’ll need a maximum of half an hour here to cover everything here.

araku valley from hyderabad

Padmapuram Botanical Garden is the next stop in Araku Valley, 2 km from the Araku Tribal Museum.

Built in 1942 during World War 2, it was initially developed to supply fruits and vegetables to the soldiers. Today, it is a fully developed garden, host to a wide variety of trees, plants and flowers including a rose garden.

Hence, it is a great place to walk around and relax especially after your long journey from Vizag.

You can also take the toy train inside the garden that gives you a tour of the botanical garden.

5 best places to visit in Vizag

Excluding Araku Valley, you’ll need two days to cover Vizag. In this section, let me take you through the 5 best places to visit in Vizag:

1. Rushikonda Beach

araku valley tourism

Rushikonda Beach is the most prominent beach in Vizag.

Located 30 km north of Vizag, Rushikonda Beach surrounds itself with hills and curves along the coastline of Vizag. It is a white sand beach with clean waters that has got international recognition for maintaining cleanliness standards.

If you’re into water sports, you can find plenty of activities here like a speed boat, jet skiing, surfing, scuba diving and paragliding.

There are plenty of food stalls as well near the beach.

2. Kailasagiri Park

araku valley weather

If you want to get a panoramic view of Vizag from a height and spend some time in nature, the Kailasagiri Park is your best bet.

Spread across 100 acres on a hilltop, the Kailasagiri Park has a huge garden full of different kinds of trees and plants, a toy train that takes you around the park and a food court as well.

The major attraction of Kailasagiri is the 40 feet tall statues of Shiva and Parvathi.

You can easily spend an hour here walking around the park and observing different viewpoints of the city and sea.

visakhapatanm araku valley

There are two ways to reach Kailasagiri Park. Either you can take your vehicle and ascend through the hairpin bends to reach the top.

Or you can take the cable car via ropeway that covers 700 metres in 5 minutes. You get a bird’s eye view of the city in the cable car. The only drawback is that you may need to wait in a queue, especially during the weekends.

You can board this cable car from the Ropeway Base Station at the bottom of the Kailasagiri Park.

3. Ramakrishna Beach

resorts in araku valley

Ramakrishna Beach, also known as RK Beach, is the most prominent beach in Vizag after Rushikonda Beach. Located along the coastline of Vizag, this beach attracts a lot of crowds.

The beach is huge as it stretches across 3.7 km along a curve much like Marine Drive in Mumbai. But unlike the former, this beach is well-maintained with white sand and crystal clear waters.

There are lots of eateries and restaurants nearby where you’ll get plenty of street food. While you’re here, don’t forget to try the muri mixture which is a staple snack here.

4. INS Kurusura Submarine Museum/TU 142 Aircraft Museum

araku valley places to visit

When you’re at Ramakrishna Beach, don’t forget to visit the INS Kurusura Submarine Museum and the TU 142 Aircraft Museum, which are near the beach.

The INS Kurusura Submarine Museum is the only Submarine Museum in Asia. INS Kurusura Submarine served the Indian Navy for over 30 years before being decommissioned on 27th February 2001.

This museum has artefacts, pictures and life-sized figurines that explain the workings of the submarine and how the officers inside the submarines lived their daily lives. Everything is explained in great detail and well-maintained, hence you’ll learn something new from touring the museum.

haritha resort araku valley

Similarly, you have the TU 142 Aircraft Museum right next to the INS Kurusura Submarine Museum. The TU 142 aircraft had a history of flying the Indian Navy for over 30,000 hours before it was decommissioned in 2017.

This aircraft showcases an array of aeronautical equipment like a survival kit, engine, data recorder, propeller, anti-submarine missiles and sonobuoys.

Overall, you’ll need at least an hour in total for both the museums and by the end of it, you’d have learnt a great deal about the life of an Indian Navy officer and both the machines. As such, don’t miss this experience when you’re in Vizag!

haritha resorts araku valley

Yarada Beach is one of the lesser-known beaches located at a distance of 15 km south of Vizag. It surrounds itself with the sea on one side and hills on the other side which gives it a different feel compared to the Ramakrishna Beach.

Being at a remote village, you’ll find lesser crowds here as compared to Ramakrishna Beach. The drive to Yarada Beach is another highlight as you’ll be passing through a hill and some villages to get here.

Located 5 km from Yarada Beach is the Dolphin’s Nose which is a hill that represents the shape of a dolphin’s nose. Make sure you visit this hill as well as it gives you a panoramic view of the sea and the Vizag shipyard.

Visit the Dolphin’s Nose Lighthouse (at the hill) for the best view from the top. The timings are from 9 am-11 am and 3 pm-5 pm.

You can visit Yarada Beach and Dolphin’s Nose in the evening to watch the spectacular sunset.

It is also known for its tribal population, local delicacies like bamboo chicken and its international hot air balloon festival.

Borra Caves is the main attraction of Araku Valley.

The road trip to Araku Valley from Vizag is another highlight of travelling there.

How many days are enough for Araku Valley?

If you’re planning to visit Araku Valley, you’ll most likely be travelling to Vizag first before travelling to Araku Valley.

For Vizag, you’ll be needing at least two days to cover all the destinations.

You’ll then be travelling to Araku Valley from Vizag which will take at least three hours. On the way, you can cover Borra Caves, Katiki Waterfalls and Araku Coffee Plantations/Galikonda View Point.

You can cover all these places provided you start your journey from Vizag in the morning. Once you reach Araku Valley, which will most likely be in the evening, you can relax for the night.

The next day, you can cover the remaining places within Araku Valley like the Araku Tribal Museum, Araku Coffee Museum and Padmapuram Botanical Garden before returning to Vizag the same day.

So in total, keep aside four days to visit Araku Valley along with Vizag so that you have a relaxed trip.

It completely depends on what you’re looking for. If you want to experience Araku Valley at its greenest, September and October are the best months to visit.

Similarly, December and January are the best months to visit to experience the winter season at Araku Valley. January can be a better month as compared to December as you’ll face lesser crowds.

araku valley famous for

If you’re someone who likes covering offbeat destinations in India, Araku Valley in Andhra Pradesh is one place that should be on the top of your list.

Lush green valleys, coffee plantations, majestic waterfalls, deep caves and local tribes make Araku Valley a unique hill station along the east coast of India. Although it is known as the Ooty of Andhra, I rate it higher than Ooty as it is much less commercialised than the former.

I recommend you take at least four days to cover all the places in Araku Valley along with Vizag. By the end of it, you’ll realise how underrated this destination is.

I hope this guide on the ’11 best places to visit Araku Valley (+Vizag)’ will be able to help you plan your trip to Araku Valley. Let me know if you have any doubts in the comment section!

In this article, we will share a list of the best places to visit in Visakhapatnam in 2023 with location, images, entry fee & timing

Trust me on this one because I have had school picnics at most of the places listed in the article. They are worth everyone’s time and attention. Moreover, all the beauty and tranquillity tourist places in Visakhapatnam are complemented by less touristy hassle and crowd, so that’s a win-win, right?

Ready to know about the best Vizag tourist places? Let’s begin!

Best Places to Visit in Visakhapatnam in 2024:

1. yarada beach.

Yarada Beach, Visakhapatnam

Yarada Beach | #1 of 20 Best Places to visit in Visakhapatnam.

A coastal town without a beach is almost like breathing without air, it is impossible. Yarada Beach is one of the most scenic beaches in Visakhapatnam. Surrounded by hills on three sides, it is lined by the Bay of Bengal n the fourth, completing this picturesque scene you see here. Unlike other beaches of Vizag, this one is comparatively calmer and peaceful.

If you can visit the beach at the time of sunset and sunrise, you might be lucky to find it without people. Now that would give you the perfect frame, setting and view for those Instagram-worthy clicks, won’t it? You are sure to have a memorable time at this beach with its golden sands and crystal-clear water.

Photographer or not, you can always visit the beach with friends and family. We recommend you trek to the beach because that itself is another experience altogether.

2. Dolphin Hill or Nose a good Place to Visit in Visakhapatnam

Dolphin Hill or Nose, Visakhapatnam

Dolphin Hill or Nose | #2 of 20 Best Places to visit in Vizag.

Located just 4.5 km from Yarada Beach, Dolphin Hill deserves a special mention because of the viewpoints it has. With meandering roads leading to the top of the hill, you should walk to the various viewpoints and get some photos clicked. It will be worth all the exhaustion you may feel after the long walk up the steep roads.

However, the only catch to visit Dolphin Hill is it is inside the premises of Indian Navy and is heavily barricaded. But, thanks to its popularity among tourists, the navy does allow civilians access to this scenic spot. So, if you can plan a trip, this tourist place in Visakhapatnam is totally worth a visit.

While the beach is not optimum for swimming, you can always spend some leisure time sunbathing, playing volleyball with friends or water surfing. Moreover, Andhra University has been regularly conducting research to save the sea turtles during their breeding season that you can also see.

Besides the beach itself, you can also visit the various museums, temples, aquarium, and of course the Sri Ramakrishna Mission Ashram, located opposite to it. So, on your next visit to the RK beach, do not forget to explore it in a better light and also soak in a stunning sunset in the evening.

An 11 th -century Hindu temple, it is dedicated to the Varaha and Narasimha avatars of Lord Vishnu, and Goddess Lakshmi. The architecture of the temple is majorly Dravidian with several influences of the Kalinga style. From the carvings on the inner wall to the shrines of Lord Vishnu, everything at the shrine catches one’s fancy. As is the tradition in South India, you will find that the shrine is always covered in sandal paste. You must spend some time exploring the temple and try reading the inscriptions dating back to AD 1087 (if you can).

9. Borra Caves

Borra Caves, Visakhapatnam

Borra Caves | #9 of 20 Best Places to visit in Visakhapatnam.

Just 90 km from the city, these natural caves are 705 metres above sea level. Once inside the caves, you can hear your voice echo. Moreover, right in the middle of the caves lie a small shivling. Climb on a steep stair and you will find the shrine in the centre. Many devotees come to Borra Caves just to get a glimpse of the shivling. Once you have paid your respects to Lord Shiva, come out of the caves and soak in the stunning rock formation and waterfalls here. Plus, there are lots of natural formations here that are a result of constant erosion and the rocks being carved and shaped by the river. The multi-coloured lights installed here recently make these even better and intriguing to look at.

10. Katiki Falls

Katiki Falls, Visakhapatnam

Katiki Falls | #10 of 20 Best Places to visit in Vizag.

Katiki Waterfalls is another natural marvel near Visakhapatnam that deserves at least one visit. The main source of water to this fall is the Gosthani River. The sight of the water falling from an almost-vertical cliff surrounded by nothing but immense greenery and serenity is something you will never forget. Perched at an elevation of 50 feet, the cascading waters from the falls make for an excellent spot to click some amazing shots. If the lush greenery is not enough for you, trek to the falls to soak in the beauty of this place to the fullest.

11. Araku Valley

Araku Valley, Visakhapatnam

Araku Valley | #11 of 20 Best Places to visit in Vizag.

Its beauty is often compared to that of Ooty and the reasons are justified. Starting from the lush greenery that covers every inch of the valley to the coffee plantations, viewpoints and tribal culture, everything here will enchant you to the core. Believe us!

If all this stirs up the wanderlust in you, we suggest you spend at least a couple of days in the valley itself. Soak in the view of the green patches of grasslands, and you will know what we are talking about. You can stop at places that give you the best view because when it comes to exploring Araku Valley, the journey is more important than the destination.

Take everything at a slow pace and immerse yourself in the beauty of this place because the smell of freshly roasted coffee and the voice of the gurgling streams will linger long after you have left. Having been there myself, I still yearn to return to this magical hill station tucked away from mainstream tourists. Maybe that is where the beauty of Araku Valley lies…in it being hidden and untouched.

12. VUDA Park

Visakhapatnam Urban Development Authority (VUDA) Park, also known as Taraka Rama Park, is one of the top places to visit in Vizag . Spread over an area of 55 acres, this beautiful recreation centre is perfect for spending some leisure time with the family. Lush green trees (around 2500), beautiful lawns and colourful flowers add a distinctive charm to the space and attract nature lovers in huge numbers. The park is only a couple of kilometres away from Ramakrishna Beach, so you can visit both these places on the same day.

Besides spending some peaceful time in the park, you can enjoy swimming, boating, horse and camel rides and other activities here. And that’s not all, VUDA Park also has a roller-skating rink, children’s park, artificial caves and many more amazing spots. 13. Victory at Sea War Memorial

War Memorial, Visakhapatnam

War Memorial | #13 of 20 Best Places to visit in Vizag.

Located on Beach Road, Victory at Sea War Memorial was constructed to honour the 1971 Indo-Pak War heroes of the Indian Navy and the Eastern Naval Command. During the war, Pakistan was aiming to destroy an Indian aircraft carrier – INS Vikrant, at Visakhapatnam Port. However, the Indian Navy fought valiantly and succeeded in sinking a Pakistani submarine called PNS Ghazi at the coast of Visakhapatnam and emerged victorious. The memorial was hence built in 1996 in memory of the first battle victory in the 1971 War.

The main monument is surrounded by many missiles, tankers, fighter plane models and other war weapons used by the Navy. When you visit the memorial, you are sure to feel a sense of patriotism and respect for the martyrs who fought bravely for the country. After paying homage to the brave sailors, you can also take a leisure walk on the beach and enjoy mesmerising views of the sea.

The sanctuary, which is named after a local hill – Kambalakonda, is covered in lush green foliage and is a wonderful place if you are looking to spend time in the lap of nature. 15. Bojjannakonda

Bojjannakonda, Visakhapatnam

Bojjannakonda | #15 of 20 Best Places to visit in Visakhapatnam.

Bojjannakonda, originally known as Buddina Konda, is a series of Buddhist rock-cut caves dating to a time between 4 th Century AD and 9 th Century AD. This was a time when Buddhism was a major religion in this part of the country. It is situated in a village called Sankaram, which is 21 km from Visakhapatnam.

This small group of six rock-cut caves, with beautifully carved statues of Lord Gautam Buddha, monasteries, and monolithic stupas, is one of the most famous Buddhist establishments in Andhra Pradesh. Each cave also has engraved pillars depicting the principles of Buddhism. A life-size figure of Lord Gautam Buddha in meditation pose, 2000-year old prayer halls, and the monasteries here are testimony to the fact that these caves were used by Buddhist monks for prayers and meditation. The site also has a Maha Stupa with a dome made of bricks.

Fringed by paddy fields, Bojjannakonda is quite popular among devotees, peace-seekers, and tourists. Besides exploring the caves and learning about the religious history of the region, you can also meditate in the tranquil surroundings here. The area is now maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India.

Vizag is surrounded by three hills and Ross Hill Church stands atop the central one. And once you reach the hilltop, you can enjoy fabulous views of the entire city, including the port, shipyard and beaches in Vizag – something you can’t afford to miss during your trip here.

Arashiyama, Bamboo Forest, Japan

About 20 minutes outside Kyoto’s city centre is the atmospheric Arashiyama bamboo forest. Arrive at around 7am to avoid the crowds and get a chance to see and feel the wood, as well as hear it creaking in the wind. Morning light is just as ethereal, too. Arabica coffee shop is nearby, overlooking Hozugawa River.

Las Coloradas, Yucatan, Mexico

The incredible pink lakes here make up part of the protected nature reserve of Ría Lagartos Biosphere on Mexico’s Yucatán peninsula. Red-coloured algae, plankton and brine shrimp that thrive in the waters not only turn the native flamingos pink but help produce 500,000 tons of salt per year.

The Avenue of the Baobabs Madagascar

Avenue of the Baobabs, Madagascar

This is one of Madagascar's most visited natural sites – and for good reason. Aside from the spectacular photo opportunities on offer as the sun casts auburn shades on the trees, travellers come to support local conservation efforts, and spot the unique wildlife that frolics in the overgrowth nearby.

Blue Lagoon Iceland

Blue lagoon, Iceland

One of  Iceland's  most spectacular sites is, surprisingly, man-made. The Blue Lagoon's waters are a byproduct of a nearby geothermal power plant, which passes through turbines and into the lagoon. Natural geological layers account for the water's rich mineral content, which travellers use to their benefit, bathing and smothering themselves in the rich clay.

Cape Town, South Africa

Eager to spot a waddle of penguins in the wild? There's no need to save up for the ultimate excursion to Antarctica – although that's just as high on many bucket lists. On the shores of some of  South Africa's  most picturesque beaches, the animals mingle in search of a mate – safe from the fearsome great white that circle beneath the waves just metres away.

Colorado River in the Grand Canyon

The Grand Canyon, USA

The Grand Canyon is part of the Colorado River basin and, aside from its beauty, is geologically significant as the waters that pass through here have revealed billions of years worth of rock layers. While it's popular with travelling day-trippers, native Americans still call it home, having first settled in the caves thousands of years ago.

Inside view on IkKil Cenote close to Chichen Itza Mexico

Cenotes, Mexico

Formed by the collapse of eroded limestone,  Mexico's  cenotes harbour secrets and beauty discovered by sunshine-chasers each year. The unique formations were celebrated by the ancient Maya people, and archaeological investigations over the years have found artefacts made from gold, jadeite, shell and more on the sandy depths.

A road poising through the desert of Joshua Tree as sunrise

Joshua Tree National Park, USA

Stone tools and spearheads discovered in Joshua Tree National Park suggest the region was inhabited as long as 8,000 years ago. Modern travellers experience this wilderness in a very different way, checking into luxurious micro-resorts and serviced holiday homes. Think the landscapes are otherworldly by day? Look to the skies at night for an altogether different, and unforgettable, sight.

Maldives

The Maldives

Spoiling retreats of all shapes and sizes litter the sandy banks of the Maldives , an archipelagic state in the Indian Ocean. Between the indulgent wellness resorts and exotic restaurants, the crystal-clear waters offer ample opportunity for snorkelling and diving excursions. Dive into the blue and find yourself in a world of kaleidoscopic colour as fish fizzle in and out of focus.

Peyto Lake in Canada

Peyto Lake, Canada

One of Canada's most beautiful and most-photographed lakes is a pool of cerulean on darker days, while its glacier waters mirror the sky's dappled blue on brighter days. Keen amblers are well rewarded as they reach Bow Summit, the highest point on the Icefields Parkway.

Argent Beach on La Digue Island Seychelles

La Digue, Seychelles

The third most populated island in  the Seychelles , La Digue takes its name from a ship in the fleet of French explorer Marc-Joseph Marion du Fresne, who visited the Seychelles in 1768. Thanks to its otherworldly granite formations, glassy waters and fine sand, Anse Source d'Argent is often regarded as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world – a spot travellers fawn over as they venture out from the island's uber-luxurious hotels and resorts.

Grand Prismatic Spring Yellowstone National Park Wyoming

Yellowstone National Park, USA

Bison, bears, geese, deer – these are just some of the animals that call the oldest national park in the world home. Each change of the seasons beckons new residents out of their homes, as many cosy up during the cold winters and await the first signs of spring. A highlight of the park is the Yellowstone Caldera, a gargantuan crater that was formed by a cataclysmic volcanic eruption some 640,000 years ago.

Even if Yellowstone didn't hold the incredible distinction of being the world's first national park, the 2.2 million-acre park, which stretches across Wyoming, Montana and Idaho, could easily stand on its own for its unique natural attractions and magnificent landscapes . Here, travelers can get lost in the splendor of Yellowstone's many lakes, mountains, bison-filled valleys and, of course, its unmatched hot springs and active geysers (of which the park boasts more than half of the world's supply). To avoid the crowds that often plague Yellowstone while also ensuring excellent weather, plan to visit in April, May or October.

One of California's most-visited national parks, Yosemite National Park stands out for its bevy of impressive waterfalls, such as Vernal Fall and Bridalveil Fall, as well as its unique granite rock formations like Half Dome and El Capitan. There are also ample scenic hiking and camping opportunities; just keep in mind that campsites sell out quickly after becoming available for booking, so make your reservations in advance. Whatever your itinerary may be, make sure to stop by the Tunnel View overlook, which offers showstopping panoramas of Yosemite Valley. What's more, the picturesque lookout spot is relatively easy to access (no hiking is required).

best places to visit in vizag in winter

The Grand Canyon is so magnificent that even the highest quality photos don't do the Arizona park's vast beauty justice – you just have to see it in person. The 18-by-277-mile UNESCO World Heritage Site offers endless hiking opportunities with trails of various lengths and degrees of difficulty, as well as the chance to raft the Colorado River. For a slight break from the tourist crowds, head to the less-congested North Rim. And if you're looking for a different vantage point, consider a helicopter tour to learn more about Grand Canyon National Park and see it in all its glory from above.

Jackson Hole's backcountry is a wild wonderland begging to be explored. Once home to ranchers and fur trappers, this Wyoming park now offers more than 250 miles of trails that weave past forests, lakes and the jagged, snow-capped peaks of the Grand Teton mountain range. The Cascade Canyon Trail – which takes travelers past waterfalls, glacier-carved canyons and more – shows off the best of Grand Teton National Park's stunning topography. Don't forget to stop by the Craig Thomas Discovery & Visitor Center to stock up on maps, check out its informational exhibits and watch the interesting documentary film about the park.

Utah's Zion National Park is a paradise for thrill-seekers. Hike Angels Landing, which brings you up through a nearly 1,500-foot natural staircase (permits are required to hike this popular trail and are awarded through an online lottery system). You can also trek The Narrows, a roughly 10-mile hike through the thinnest section of Zion Canyon, which requires hikers to travel upstream through the Virgin River. For a less strenuous exploration of the park, join a shuttle bus tour to traverse the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive, which takes you past many of the park's most famous landmarks.

best places to visit in vizag in winter

Spanning six million acres of unspoiled Alaskan wilderness, Denali National Park and Preserve is as vast as it is fascinating. One-sixth of the park is covered in glaciers, and the tallest mountain in North America, Denali, stands within its bounds, towering at 20,310 feet high. The park appeals to true explorers as there isn't an abundance of marked trails. However, free ranger-led trail hikes are available seasonally. Visitors can also watch a sled dog demonstration, go snowmobiling or take a narrated bus tour of the 92-mile Denali Park Road to see scenic landmarks like Savage River and Wonder Lake.

best places to visit in vizag in winter

Comprised of glaciers, coastal fjords and icefields, Kenai Fjords National Park transports guests to an age where ice covered large parts of the earth. The Harding Icefield – which was created more than 23,000 years ago – is one of this Alaska park's main features, extending for 700 square miles and viewable via the 8.2-mile Harding Icefield Trail. Visitors can also embark on the Glacier Overlook Trail and Glacier View Loop Trail to catch vistas of Exit Glacier, which flows from the famed icefield. Or, take a kayak or a boat tour to experience the awe-inspiring landscapes from the water.

best places to visit in vizag in winter

Hoodoos are odd-shaped pillars of rock left standing from forces of erosion, and Bryce Canyon National Park is home to the most extensive collection of hoodoos in the world. Located in southern Utah, the nearly 36,000-acre park offers an array of hiking opportunities. All trails offer a glimpse of the impressive red rock formations; visitors can also sign up for guided horseback riding tours. While Bryce Canyon is most popular in summer, the park's stark white snow-covered landscape juxtaposed with the orange-red rocks is an unforgettable sight. Winter is also a prime time for activities such as snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.

best places to visit in vizag in winter

As the name suggests, Redwood National and State Parks are best known for their sky-high redwood trees, which typically soar more than 300 feet tall. Along with exploring the old-growth redwood groves, travelers can hike past rivers, through prairies and along 40 miles of Pacific Coast shoreline, spotting wildlife like elk, sea lions and various species of birds as they go. If you can't stay long, scenic drives like Howland Hill Road and Enderts Beach Road showcase park highlights. But for those wanting to sleep under the stars and rise with the sun, there are four developed campgrounds.

Established in 1929 and awarded national park status in 1971, Arches National Park covers nearly 77,000 acres in eastern Utah. Oddly shaped sandstone monuments occupy every view, and the formations make the park an excellent place for backpackers, rock climbers and hikers, not to mention photographers. Visitors will find a whopping 2,000-plus arches in the park – the world's densest concentration of these natural structures. The most popular to see are Landscape Arch, Delicate Arch and Double Arch. Plus, travelers will want to check out the visitor center, which features a wealth of information and exhibits outlining Arches National Park's history, geology and more.

best places to visit in vizag in winter

Sequoia National Park is defined by its beautiful, towering sequoia trees – the largest trees in the world. Travelers can hike through this unique California national park to admire its trees, rivers, meadows and wildlife. A visit here is not complete without seeing the Giant Forest's General Sherman Tree, which measures nearly 275 feet tall and more than 36 feet in diameter, making it the world's largest tree by volume. After you ogle the truly impressive evergreens, try some other adventurous activities like rock climbing, horseback riding or fishing.

best places to visit in vizag in winter

Among the nearly 1 million acres that make up Olympic National Park, visitors can wander through the enchanting Hoh Rainforest, trek to stunning overlooks and relax on more than 70 miles of Pacific Northwest coastline. One of North America's top hiking destinations , this Washington state gem features top trails like Mount Storm King and the Hall of Mosses. However, you will also want to save time for trying out one of Olympic National Park's other popular activities, which range from canoeing on Lake Crescent to birdwatching on Kalaloch and Ruby Beach.

best places to visit in vizag in winter

Visit Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park for a chance to get up close and personal with two of the world's most active volcanoes, Mauna Loa and Kilauea. The latter almost continually erupts, which visitors can witness from multiple points in the park, including Crater Rim Drive and the famous Chain of Craters Road (although eruption sightings are never guaranteed). While driving along Chain of Craters Road, set aside time to stop at the Kealakomo Overlook. The scenic lookout offers expansive views of the Pacific Ocean and the ancient village of Kealakomo.

best places to visit in vizag in winter

At 14,410 feet tall, Mount Rainer is the highest peak in the Cascade Range and the tallest volcano in the contiguous United States. Though thousands of travelers tackle the ambitious hike to the mountain's summit each year, it's far more popular to drive to Sunrise, the highest point accessible by vehicle, to soak in 360-degree views of the Cascade Range and Emmons Glacier. Numerous shorter hikes are also available at Mount Rainier National Park, so visitors can explore the temperate rainforests of Carbon River, admire the picturesque wildflower meadows at Paradise or search for the waterfalls in the old-growth forests at Ohanapecosh.

best places to visit in vizag in winter

The Rockies earn plenty of points for their convenience. Sitting about 70 miles northwest of Denver, Rocky Mountain National Park makes for an easy daytrip. However, you could also spend days exploring this Colorado park. The Rockies' magnificent landscape is one for the books, featuring more than 350 miles of scenic trails, plenty of lakes and numerous mountain peaks taller than 10,000 feet. If you're short on time, Emerald Lake Trail is a popular trek that's less than 5 miles round trip and promises spectacular alpine views. If you'd rather skip the hiking, opt instead for an auto tour of Trail Ridge Road.
