WHY VISIT AZERBAIJAN?

Azerbaijan, or the Land of Fire as it’s fondly called by the locals, is a former Soviet state bordered by Russia in the north, Georgia in the north-west, Armenia on the west and Iran in the south. The eastern borders of the country are surrounded by the Caspian Sea.

When it comes to tourism, Azerbaijan has plenty to offer. From the encapsulated history of the Fire Temple and the preserved old charm of Sheki City, to the mud volcanoes in Gobustan National Park and the intriguing balance between the traditional and modern in Baku City – visitors are spoilt for choice.

The country makes an excellent travel destination for anyone who loves architecture, history, nature, food and exploration. Travelling from the UAE to Azerbaijan can be done all year round. The flight lasts barely three hours, which means you can even consider it for a weekend getaway. But the best part is that Azerbaijan visa for UAE residents and nationals is available on arrival!

Oh…and did we mention that the food is cheap and delicious?!

Azerbaijan and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have entered a visa-free regime, fostering an ever-closer partnership between the two nations. As of July 8th, 2023, citizens of both countries will be able to stay in Azerbaijan and UAE without a visa for up to three months. This momentous development not only signifies the rapid growth of relations but also paves the way for remarkable opportunities in various fields and sectors.

“We are excited to make a seamless travel experience for the travelers from UAE, making our destination more accessible. We are eagerly looking forward to welcome guests looking to explore versatile tourism experiences Azerbaijan has to offer” said Florian Sengstschmid, CEO of Azerbaijan Tourism Board.

In recent years, Azerbaijan has emerged as a highly sought-after travel destination for UAE travellers, in part due to its convenient direct flights and reputation as a dynamic cultural, and business hub. In 2022, almost 42,000 tourists from the UAE travelled to Azerbaijan which is more than double when compared to 2021.  With availability of the direct flight along with the visa-free regime exploring Azerbaijan has never been more accessible. Additionally, there are presently regular direct flights between Azerbaijan and United Arab Emirates. These include Azerbaijan Airlines and FlyDubai operating flights to Dubai, WizzAir offering flights to Abu Dhabi and Air Arabia servicing flights to Sharjah. With daily flights between Baku and Dubai along with other routes, the number of arrivals from the region is expected to grow further.

Azerbaijan is an exceptional combination of an Eastern country with a Western outlook. The needs of today's travellers are met by the availability of a wide range of modern amenities, such as world-class hotels, restaurants, and shopping centres. The country boasts a wealth of attractions, including the UNESCO-listed Old City of Baku, the Caucasus Mountains, the Caspian Sea, and the traces of the ancient Silk Road, there's an abundance of sights to discover. The capital Baku is a vibrant cosmopolitan city that has both contemporary and ancient architecture: the city's skyline is dotted with modern skyscrapers alongside astonishing historic buildings. The city has something for everyone - from exploring the cobbled streets of the UNESCO-listed Old City, enjoying a vibrant nightlife, and taking your children to the entertainment center at Deniz Mall, to indulging in the delectable local cuisine.

Azerbaijan is also perfect for nature gateways in to lush nature, perfectly complementing days spend in the city. As sustainability has been a big part of Azerbaijan’s tourism strategy, it leads to the development of many “green” experiences such as birdwatching and hiking routes, preservation of local products and age-old cooking methods within the framework of Slow Food Travel, as well as protection of touristic sites through sustainable heritage management. Among many enchanting regions of Azerbaijan with lush nature and delicious local cuisine, one that can stand out as a great family destination is Shamakhi. The region has a number of interesting locations, including Shamakhi Safari Park and Shamakhi Alpaca farm. Family travel is a unique experience, demanding not only a safe and secure destination but one that offers engaging activities for both adults and children. Azerbaijan fulfils this requirement with ease, delivering a wide array of engaging and diverse activities designed to captivate children and allow parents to relax.

In conclusion, Azerbaijan is an exceptional travel destination. Its blend of modern amenities, rich historical sites, eco-conscious practices, and family-friendly activities ensure it caters to every traveller's desires, making for an unforgettable holiday experience.

Azerbaijan e-visa

That’s the easiest way to have a hassle-free experience. Visa on arrival might be easier than the tedious visa process at the embassy but e-visas are the easiest. However, the e-visa would be valid for 90 days from the date of issuance.

How can you describe Azerbaijan, the land of Fire, in simple words? If you ask me, I would rather say that it is a rare combination of history, mystery and exotic destination whose hospitable natives will stay in your heart forever. With the sudden reduction of oil prices, travelling to this country has become much more affordable compared to the olden days. Moreover, the introduction of e-visa has made things easier for travellers. So it is your time to get an Azerbaijan visit visa from Dubai and explore this beautiful country. In this article, we will give you a better picture of Azerbaijan and why visiting the country at least once in your lifetime is necessary. So let’s begin.

Reasons to Visit Azerbaijan

Between the borders of Eastern Europe and Western Asia in the Caucuses region lies the beautiful country Azerbaijan. There are many reasons, like mud volcanoes, the Caspian Sea, Flaming mountains, etc., that will make you come back here again and again. Now let’s get deep into more of its details.

When the oil industry was flourishing, the economy of Azerbaijan had skyrocketed. But now, we have seen a drop in the oil price all over the around. It has adversely affected the country’s financial status also. Its value dropped almost by 50%. As a result, the country has become much more affordable than in the olden days. Here you can spend your day with around $60, including accommodation, admission fee, entertainment, and food and drinks. Backpackers can save more on their trip as they will be spending up to $30 to $40 per day.

Azerbaijan e-visa

Earlier, it wasn’t easy to get an Azerbaijan visa. You had to make frequent trips to the embassy, and there was a long wait to get your visa approved. But now the situation has changed, as the government has introduced an e-visa system to its visitors. Tourists from around 100 countries can avail of this service, which will cost them only $20 and a $3 service charge. The best part is the visa will be processed within three working days.

Mud volcanoes

One-third of the World’s mud volcanoes are found in the Absheron Peninsula. The speciality of these sedimentary volcanoes is that they erupt mud instead of hot lava when the pressure builds up. Turaghai and Boyuk Khanizadagh are two famous mud volcanoes of Azerbaijan, the tallest ones in the World. They slowly bubble away and build the side over time.

Like Georgia, Azerbaijan also has very warm natives who are to extend their help to visitors at any time. Here people will go out of their way to help you whenever they find you in trouble. You won’t require a professional guide here in Azerbaijan. Just ask the natives about the way, and they will take you there personally. Their English speaking skill will also be a good advantage for you.

Mountain Villages

Along the stretches of the Caucasus Mountain, near northern Azerbaijan and Georgia, lies small villages famous for their history and culture. There are communities like Zinaliq, Laza and Baduq which will make you lost in time because of their unique livelihood. Jews also reside here on the Eastern side of the Caucasus Mountains. Make it a point to visit them once before going back.

The historical, traditional and modern

You will find varied architecture in Azerbaijan. It is incredible to see how Baku’s modern Flame Towers and Opulent House of Government blend well with medieval palaces and temples. Baku City is famous for its medieval and traditional Islamic Azerbaijan styles. In the 19th century, Europeans came here after seeing the oil boom and introduced baroque and Gothic architecture. There are also endless apartment blocks that resemble that of a 20th-century European country.

Fire, Fire, Fire

The meaning of Azer in the local language is Fire. In the olden days, natives of Azerbaijan used to worship Fire and built temples around the fires emerging from subterranean gas. Azerbaijan is also the birthplace of Zoroastrianism, one of the oldest religions in the World. One of its major attractions is Ateshgah, which was once a fire temple in the Baku suburbs. Citizens of Azerbaijan worship Fire even now and built Flame Towers in 2012 to show their respect for Fire.

Tea culture

Tea has been part of their culture since ancient times. In fact, they perform ancient ceremonies with tea whenever a guest arrives to show their hospitality and warmth. So whenever you visit the home of Azerbaijani, you will notice that they will serve you a black spiced tea along with a sugar cube. You have to dip the sugar cube in the tea and take a bite before drinking the tea. According to folklore, it is a practice that they have been following since medieval times. It is because rulers at that time were worried about getting poisoned. So if the sugar reacted while dipping in the tea, they knew someone was trying to kill them.

Hiking in the Caucasus

The Caucasus Mountains lie between the boundary of Eastern Europe and Western Asia and are one of the most culturally and linguistically diverse places in the World. It is situated just a few miles from Baku and has ravines, steep gorges and plains stretching far into the distance. While hiking here, you will have the rare opportunity to get in touch with the natural beauty of Azerbaijan.

Places to visit in Azerbaijan

Here are a few places you must not miss on your next Azerbaijan trip. From old architecture to rich culture, these places have everything you are looking for.

Baku, which lies along the Caspian Sea, is the capital city of Azerbaijan. Here you can find a mixture of traditional and modern architecture. The old walled city of Icheri Seher and modern skyscrapers lie adjacent. One of the country’s famous attractions, Flame Tower, resides here and is also home to a Museum of Contemporary Art with a collection of more than 900 artworks. You can also stroll around the local markets nearby and buy souvenirs for your loved ones back home.

Astara city lies in the Astara Rayon district that shares its border with Iran. Rich in lush-green forests and gigantic mountains, this place is rightly termed the most beautiful place in Azerbaijan. Picturesque cafes and local restaurants add more charm to this place. They are the places where you will have the opportunity to taste the country’s regional cuisine. Apart from them, a museum is nearby which displays all the region’s findings. Here you will find statues, coins and other preserved items that date back to 2000 years. There are also bathhouses, mosques, mausoleums and ancient towers that will give you a glimpse of the country’s rich history and culture.

Sheki is a 60,000-year-old town situated at the foothills of the Southern Greater Caucasus Mountain. It has the oldest Caucasus settlement and is famous for textiles, silk and embroidery. The country has made a significant landmark in the silk industry. Ancient castles, mosques, and the 18th-century palace built by Sheki Khans add more beauty to the city. Mighty mountains adorn them in the background.

If you want to learn about Azerbaijan culture in detail, Quba is the right place. This ancient mountain town lies on the northeast side of the country and has the Qudailchay River passing across it. A small Jewish village lies near the river, with beautiful mountains on the backdrop. It is one of the best places to run away from your busy life and spend a peaceful weekend with your friends and family.

Goyazan Mountain

Seen from the outskirts of Abbasbayli and Alpout villages, this vast mountain is located on the Northwestern side of the Qazak district. It stands tall at the height of 857.9 metres above sea level and is surrounded by beautiful rolling fields and plains that offer a stunning view. You will have the best trekking experience here.

Mud volcano

The mud volcano is a unique natural phenomenon in Azerbaijan, which you cannot find anywhere else in the World. These mineral-concentrated volcanoes lie on the Caspian Sea coastline, near the desert area of Baku. Even though it is not easy to reach there, but is worth exploring mainly because of its healing property.

Lake Goygol

Lake Goygol is listed among the most beautiful places in Azerbaijan mainly because of its ethereal landscape. It is settled in the lower Caucasus mountains and is surrounded by dense forests. The lake was formed during the 12th-century earthquake and was opened to the public only recently.

Absheron National Park

Absheron National Park is the right choice for you if you are fond of nature and wildlife. It is placed on the southeastern tip of the Absheron Peninsula and is home to more than 50 varieties of flora and fauna. Despite being in a protected zone, millions of tourists visit every year to explore its natural beauty.

Steps to apply for an Azerbaijan visit visa from Dubai

Azerbaijan is one of the best places to explore, especially from Dubai. It takes only 2 hours and 30 minutes to fly down to Azerbaijan from Dubai. So why waste time? Get an Azerbaijan visit visa from Dubai and gift yourself some of the most beautiful moments in life. Here are the steps you must follow while applying for an Azerbaijan visa from Dubai.

Azerbaijan offers two types of visas for the UAE residents. One is the visa on arrival, and the other is the e-visa.

Azerbaijan visa on arrival

Yes, you have heard it right, the country allows visas on arrival, especially for UAE residents who enter the country for tourism purposes. Getting your visa at the time of arrival is such a relief, and you don’t have to go through all those tedious visa processes. This visa is valid only for 30 days and permits only single entry to the country. But make sure that you come under their permissible list of countries before boarding your flight. You will have to pay AED 185 at the airport to receive your Azerbaijan visa on arrival. There are a few things that you have to note here.

  • If you have recently visited a few territories of Azerbaijan that come under Armenia, you will be denied permission to enter the country.
  • If you plan to stay in the country for more than 15 days, you must register yourself with the State Migration Service of Azerbaijan.

Azerbaijan e-visa is the most hassle-free method of visa processing. Of course, getting a visa on arrival is easy, but e-visa is much easier to apply and get your visa processed. With this e-visa, you can stay in the country for 30 days, but it allows only a single entry. However, it is valid for 90 days from its issue date.

Documents required for an Azerbaijan e-visa

  • A valid passport with a minimum validity of 3 months from the date of your e-visa expiry.
  • Copies of your passport and UAE residential visa.
  • A valid email address. Your e-visa will be sent to this email address.
  • Copies of your flight tickets and hotel bookings.

Azerbaijan's capital, Baku, was once an off-the-beaten-track destination only known to the most adventurous backpackers and business travelers. But nowadays, it is a fascinating destination where East literally meets West. In January 2017, the Republic of Azerbaijan introduced an electronic visa for more than 90 nationalities.

The Azerbaijan e-visa is a travel document required for most visitors to enter Azerbaijan for tourist purposes. This new e-visa system makes traveling to Azerbaijan much easier, as there is no need to visit the Azerbaijan embassy to obtain the document. Apply for your Azerbaijan visa in a few clicks with iVisa.com.

What is the Azerbaijan e-visa?

The Azerbaijan e-visa is an official document authorizing travel to this Middle Eastern country and is electronically linked to your passport. This visa is a pre-entry authorization to enter the Republic of Azerbaijan.

This system is also called ASAN Visa and issues single-entry visas for up to 30 days stay in Azerbaijan. You will not receive a sticker or paper visa in your passport.

Who is eligible to apply for the Azerbaijan Electronic Visa?

It is a Single Entry visa, meaning you can only enter one time within this period and stay in the country for up to 30 days in Total . If you leave Azerbaijan after a week, for example, you will need to obtain a new e-visa to re-enter the country.

If you plan to stay in Azerbaijan for more than ten days, you will need to register with the State Migration Service of the Republic of Azerbaijan during your trip. This registration can be done at your hotel. Please ask, and they will assist you.

UAE residents planning to travel to Europe for the upcoming Eid Al Adha break or summer vacation may find it difficult to get an appointment for Schengen visas . According to industry experts, appointment slots are booked till the end of August, but some may become available due to multiple factors.

Residents will get up to five days off in mid-June to celebrate Eid Al Adha. Schools will close for the summer vacation in July-August, which is the most popular time for residents to travel.

When asked whether appointment slots would be available ahead of the summer break, a top official from VFS Global — which manages administrative visa applications from the UAE for multiple European countries — said visa appointments are reflected in “real-time” on its website.

“Europe continues to be a high-demand destination for travellers from the UAE, especially for summer getaways, and it is imperative to plan and book well in advance to ensure a hassle-free journey,” Monaz Billimoria, regional head - UAE, VFS Global, told Khaleej Times. “The way tickets, hotels and packages are booked in advance, visas should be given the same, if not more, priority while planning the holidays.”

In an interview with Khaleej Times back in March, Billimoria had said that slots were filling up for summer travel to Schengen countries. “Travellers can apply for a Schengen visa up to six months prior to their intended date of travel.”

Demand soars

Travel demand to Europe for the summer vacation season has increased by 40 per cent this year as compared to 2023, according to online travel agency Musafir.

European destinations, particularly Schengen countries, are experiencing a surge in demand, it said. Citing data from its platform, the travel agency said: “Where most are travelling to the popular Schengen countries, 20-25 per cent are excited about exploring the newer territories.”

Residents who have just started planning their trip to Europe for the summer may find it difficult to secure a visa appointment.

“Most embassies are currently offering appointments starting in September 2024. However, it is not impossible to find an appointment,” said Ramy Badr, sales head, Dopamine Travels.

“Several embassies periodically release a limited number of slots. For example, the Czech Republic embassy recently opened appointments for late June and July. Therefore, residents are advised to regularly check the VFS website for newly available slots.”

Appointments are often released during early or late hours, so consistent monitoring is crucial, he added. “Alternatively, residents can seek assistance from us we can help track and secure appointments.”

Anir Chatterji, Europe Middle East and Africa Immigration Partner at Vialto Partners, said it is “very challenging” to get an appointment ahead of the summer break.

Fraud warning

Meanwhile, VFS Global has cautioned residents against fraudulent entities that charge money from applicants for scheduling appointments. The company does not charge any fee for booking appointments on its official website catering to visa applications.

“However, some governments require pre-payment of the service fee at the time of booking the appointment. This payment will be reimbursed or deducted during the application process. This step is only to ensure genuine travellers use appointment booking and the system is kept safe from misuse by fraudulent entities,” it added in an advisory.
