What Does American Express Travel Insurance Cover?

American Express travel insurance provides coverage for loss of life and dismemberment that occurs while on a common carrier. To be covered, you must pay for the entire trip using your credit card . You won’t be covered if you use frequent flyer points from another program or another form of payment for any part of the trip. However, if you combine American Express Membership Rewards Points and a credit card to pay for your ticket, you will be covered.

While American Express does not automatically provide coverage for trip cancellation or trip delays, they do offer a separate travel insurance package that consumers can purchase regardless of the credit card used to book travel. Coverage includes trip cancellation and interruption, travel accident protection, global medical protection, global baggage protection, global trip delay, and 24-hour travel assistance starting at $59. You can also choose individual coverage for as low as $11.

What Does Discover Flight Accident Insurance Cover?

Your Discover credit card includes up to $500,000 in flight accident insurance. The benefit covers you, a domestic partner and any eligible dependent children in the event of an accidental death or bodily injury while you’re on a trip. The loss of life benefit is paid to the beneficiary who you’ve designated in writing and filed with the plan administrator. Or, if you haven’t designated a beneficiary, the benefit will be paid to your first surviving beneficiary in this order: your spouse, your children, your parents, your brothers, and sisters or your estate. Claims must be filed with the plan administrator within 90 days.

Trip cancellation/interruption insurance is a two-in-one policy, helping travelers when their itineraries are thrown off due to unforeseen circumstances such as weather, a medical emergency or even jury duty.

Trip cancellation insurance covers your losses if a qualifying event prevents you from traveling on or before the departure date and results in your trip being canceled.

Trip interruption insurance covers losses if your travel is interrupted on the way to the point of departure or after departure. This means that if you experience car issues on your way to the airport for example, or a serious injury during your trip, or any other event that interrupts your travel plans, you may qualify for coverage.

Travelers can also be reimbursed for expenses that pop up if a trip is postponed and they need to book an additional hotel room, rent a car or pay for extra meals.

Each credit card issuer has different terms and conditions, so makes sure to read the fine print carefully so you understand what is covered under your insurance and how much you could be reimbursed.

For example, the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card provides up to $10,000 per person and $20,000 per trip for pre-paid, non-refundable travel expenses. Baggage insurance

There were nearly 3 million mishandled bags among U.S. airlines in 2019, according to the Air Travel Consumer Report . While this may sound like a large number, over 480 million bags were checked, which means over 99% of bags made it to their final destination without issue. But for the less-than 1%, their bags were either misplaced, lost, damaged or stolen.

Credit card issuers typically offer two different policies: baggage delay insurance and lost luggage reimbursement.

Policyholders with baggage delay insurance will be reimbursed if they need to purchase essentials while waiting to get their bags back. For example, if you have a Chase credit card with baggage delay insurance, you can be reimbursed up to $100 a day for five days for essential items like toiletries and clothing.

If your bags are completely lost, Chase Sapphire Reserve® cardholders can get up $3,000 with their lost baggage reimbursement policy.

Travel assistance services

Insurance is great to have, but you hope you never need to use it. In the unfortunate circumstance that you do, here's how you can file a claim with each credit card servicer.

  • American Express cardholders: File a claim by calling Amex at 1-844-933-0648 or filing a claim on the app within 60 days of the incident.
  • Chase cardholders: File a claim by calling 888-320-9961 or online at at http://www.eclaimsline.com/
  • Citi cardholders: Call the benefits administrator at 800-847-2911
  • Visa Signature cardholders (including some Capital One cards): File a claim by calling 800-757-1274 within 20 days of luggage being lost.

Travel insurance has your back when the unexpected happens on a trip. In fact, many countries—from Anguilla to the United Arab Emirates—require visitors to have travel insurance upon arrival.

One way to protect your investment in a grand getaway or storybook honeymoon is through travel insurance. A number of credit cards offer travel insurance , covering everything from canceled or interrupted travel to lost luggage and damage to a rental car. That said, the type of coverage varies.

According to Carol Mueller, vice president of Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection, about 25 percent to 30 percent of leisure travelers in the United States purchase travel insurance.

But before you purchase a travel insurance policy for your next vacation or hop on a flight assuming your credit card’s got you covered, here’s what you should know about travel insurance and how to pick the right coverage for you.

  • What is travel insurance?

Travel insurance (sometimes called trip insurance) will reimburse your prepaid travel expenses if things go awry or compensate you in the event of an emergency.

Depending on the type of coverage you have — either offered via a credit card or with a travel insurance policy you paid for — you may get your money back if you have to cancel the trip before you depart or if you cut your trip short for an unforeseen reason.

Credit cards may include types of coverage that you won’t find with a travel insurance policy you purchase, such as coverage for rental cars. And the travel insurance you purchase may offer coverage that your card doesn’t include, such as medical evacuation insurance.

  • Who needs travel insurance?

In some cases, the insurance benefits provided by your credit card may be enough. In other cases, you might want to boost your benefits by purchasing travel insurance. The difference may depend on where you’re headed and how much the trip costs.

If you spend $200 on an airline ticket to visit your parents one state over, you might not need additional travel insurance. But if you’re going on a cruise that costs thousands of dollars and need to make payments months in advance, you might want the extra protection that travel insurance offers.

To determine what kind of travel insurance you need, including how much coverage you need in terms of dollars, consider the following questions:

  • Will you be traveling domestically or internationally?
  • How long will you be traveling? Is it a short trip (seven days or less) or a long trip?
  • Are you traveling for business, pleasure or an emergency?

For example, if you’re going on a quick business trip, you will likely not need the same level of travel insurance coverage as if you’re heading out on a weeklong vacation outside the U.S.

How much does travel insurance cost?

If you have a credit card that offers travel insurance, then there’s no extra cost. You generally need to just use that card to pay for the trip in order to be eligible for coverage.

If your cards don’t meet your travel insurance needs — or you just want to be covered for any contingency — you may want to supplement your coverage by purchasing a travel insurance policy.

A travel insurance policy usually costs about 5 percent to 7 percent of the cost of the trip, Mueller says.

The main factors in the price of a travel insurance policy are the type of trip, including cost, length and destination, and the traveler’s age and any existing medical conditions.

What are the types of travel insurance?

There can be big differences between credit card coverage and a travel insurance policy you pay for out of pocket. The types of coverage offered can also vary greatly from one credit card to another.

Trip cancellation and trip interruption insurance

Trip cancellation insurance can reimburse your nonrefundable travel costs if you need to cancel your trip for a covered reason, such as illness or injury, before you depart.

Trip interruption insurance can reimburse your costs when you’re already on the road and your trip is interrupted for a covered reason, such as an illness or a natural disaster.

Many credit cards provide either trip cancellation, trip interruption insurance or both. There can be wide variations in coverage limits for trip cancellation/interruption insurance, and premium cards usually offer more generous policies.

For example, the Chase Sapphire Reserve , which has a hefty $550 annual fee, offers both trip interruption and cancellation insurance that provides coverage of up to $10,000 per person (up to $20,000 per trip) for prepaid, nonrefundable travel expenses. Meanwhile, the no-annual-fee Wells Fargo Visa Signature credit card * provides up to $2,000 per person in trip cancellation or interruption insurance.

Travel accident insurance

Travel accident insurance (often called flight accident insurance or accidental death and dismemberment insurance) is included with several credit cards. This insurance can provide a payout if you are killed or lose a limb or one of your senses — such as sight or hearing — while traveling on a common carrier.

The Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card , for example, provides up to $250,000 of such insurance.

Emergency medical and evacuation insurance

This type of insurance covers emergency evacuation if you or your spouse, domestic partner or dependent children become seriously injured or ill while you’re traveling. Both the Citi Prestige® Card * and Chase Sapphire Reserve cards cover emergency services and transportation up to $100,000.

Once you are evacuated to a hospital, though, you may have to foot your own medical bills.

According to Steven Benna, spokesperson for the travel insurance site Squaremouth.com, Medicare generally does not pay if you have a medical emergency outside of the United States, and many private health insurance plans may not cover you if you’re traveling abroad.

Travel insurance policies you purchase on your own can include both emergency evacuation insurance and emergency medical insurance.

‘Cancel for any reason’ insurance

Cancel for any reason (CFAR) insurance will allow you to earn refunds on hotels and flights even if you cancel these reservations for reasons not included by traditional travel insurance policies.

These policies can be expensive, with most carriers who provide them offering them as an upgrade to a traditional travel insurance policy. Not all CFAR policies reimburse all your travel costs. Some policies, for instance, only reimburse you for 75 percent of your costs.

Trip delay insurance

Both comprehensive travel insurance policies and many credit cards, including some airline credit cards , will cover your expenses if your trip is delayed for a certain amount of time. The United Explorer Card , for example, will cover expenses such as meals or lodging if your trip is delayed more than 12 hours or if an overnight stay is required.

Lost or delayed baggage

Comprehensive travel insurance will typically cover the purchase of clothing and other essentials if your baggage is delayed. Some credit cards will also cover lost or delayed luggage. The Capital One Venture Rewards Card, for example, reimburses you for up to $3,000 if your luggage is lost.

Auto insurance

Credit cards may also offer travel protections that extend beyond flights, hotels and cruises. A number of credit cards, including the American Express® Gold Card , will cover you if you decline the collision damage waiver when renting a car and your rental vehicle is damaged or stolen.

Comprehensive insurance

Comprehensive insurance is by far the most popular type of coverage sold by travel insurance companies, Mueller says.

It bundles different coverages for one flat fee and can include trip interruption and cancellation insurance, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, travel delay insurance, emergency medical, dental and evacuation insurance and baggage delay insurance.

Who is covered by travel insurance?

Benefits provided by your credit card may cover you, your spouse or domestic partner and your dependent children. If you purchase travel insurance, you can buy a policy just for yourself or for your whole family if you are traveling together.

Be sure to check your benefit details or clearly communicate with an insurance provider when purchasing a policy to ensure your travel insurance offers sufficient coverage for all travelers in your party who need it.

  • How to find travel insurance

If you’ve got a trip coming up, first check your credit cards to see which types of coverage they provide. Travel insurance benefits on Chase cards , for example, tend to be impressive, especially on cards with a higher annual fee. You can also find solid travel insurance benefits with American Express and other issuers.

If you’re in the market for a new card and you’ve got a big trip on the horizon, you might want to check the travel benefits offered before applying for the card. You might even land a sweet sign-up bonus that will help cover some of your travel costs.

If you want to supplement your card benefits with other coverage, reach out to your current provider for home or auto insurance or check out travel insurance aggregators such as InsureMyTrip or SquareMouth .

Mueller recommends buying travel insurance within 15 days of making a deposit or paying for your trip.

Considering many policies have exclusions for preexisting conditions, you don’t want to be diagnosed with a disease and then be unable to buy travel insurance. Another reason to buy insurance well ahead of your trip includes the potential for unforeseen circumstances, such as a natural disaster or terrorist attack near or at your trip’s destination.

What to look out for with travel insurance

Changes to your credit card benefits.

Even if one of your credit cards offered travel insurance when you initially signed up, card issuers can change or remove benefits, so be sure to check your coverage before you depart. By the same token, perhaps you’re unaware of coverage offered by a card or, less commonly, one of your existing cards may also start offering travel insurance, so it’s wise to check the offerings on all your cards before a trip.

Exclusions and fine print

Both travel insurance that comes with your credit card and coverage you purchase will have exclusions, so read the fine print . For example, travel insurance typically won’t cover you for preexisting medical conditions or if you’re traveling against the advice of a physician.

Accidents arising from certain activities may also be excluded from coverage — if you’re participating in a competitive sport, for example, or a high-risk activity like sky diving. If your itinerary includes such activities, you might be able to purchase a special policy, often tagged as an “adventurer” package.

Bottom line

Whatever you do and wherever you go on your next trip, you’ll want to be prepared. To be safe, be sure your next trip’s planning involves checking your credit card travel insurance benefits and purchasing additional travel insurance if you feel it’s needed.

Travel insurance helps you get your money back when things go wrong with your trip. And it remains a debate: Do you really need it, and is it worth it?

Personally, I’ve often skipped travel insurance, preferring to put the extra money toward my trip. Yet as I pulled into the airport after a winter ski trip to Jackson Hole, Wyoming, in my SUV rental, a snowplow kicked up a rock and a crack extended across the windshield. And just like that, I got in the dreaded rental car accident .

Thankfully, I had rented my car with my Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card , which covered rental car windshield reimbursement. A number of credit cards provide various types of travel insurance (including trip cancellation, trip interruption and car rental loss and damage insurance) when you use your card to pay for flights, rental cars and other travel expenses. So do you need additional travel insurance? Maybe not.

What does your travel insurance cover?

First, let’s look at the different types of coverage that your credit card may offer to help protect your trip, from your bags to your rental car to your health.

Baggage delay . If your luggage doesn’t arrive when you do, you may receive a reimbursement to offset the costs of having to purchase new attire and other items you may need. The length of delay required and the coverage offered varies by card.

Lost/damaged baggage . If your bags are lost or damaged by a carrier, or items have been stolen from your baggage, your provider may provide monetary compensation.

Trip delay . If your trip on a common carrier is delayed, you may receive monetary compensation to help cover meals, hotels, transportation and necessary purchases up to a certain amount per ticket.

Trip cancellation . If you need to cancel a prepaid, nonrefundable trip, you may receive compensation to offset the lost funds. This benefit generally applies to cancellations for covered reasons, which vary by card.

Trip interruption . If you miss a portion of your trip due to a covered reason, this benefit will reimburse you for any unused, prepaid, nonrefundable reservations (i.e., excursions, hotel nights).

Medical treatment . If you are hurt while traveling and require medical treatment, medical expenses may be covered up to a certain dollar amount.

Medical evacuation . If your illness or injury requires you to return home immediately for care, the insurance coverage through your card may cover the costs.

Do I need additional travel insurance?

Even with the coverage listed above, some credit cards offering travel insurance benefits may not provide enough insurance for your needs. For example, if you have paid $10,000 for a vacation using your card and trip cancellation is not offered, you may want to purchase additional coverage. Likewise, if you book a very expensive trip but your card only covers $10,000 in trip cancellation coverage, you may want to consider additional coverage.

American Express offers full travel insurance options through AmEx Assurance . This specific benefit is available to all travelers and does not require an American Express card. You can pick and choose the coverage you want, and a quote will be processed based on your age, trip expense and days traveling.

For example, here's what we found when requesting insurance for a two-day trip that costs $1,000. You can decide what coverage you'd like and see the full cost of your options:

The quote we received covered 100% reimbursement for cancellation, then offered different levels for other types of coverage.

Medical protection was available for $25,000 to $100,000.

Travel accident protection was available for $250,000 to $1,500,000.

Baggage protection was available for up to $500 to $2,500.

Trip delay coverage was offered for $150 to $1,000 per day, depending on selecting basic, silver, gold or premium options.

When renting a car, be sure to check the specific requirements of your credit card, which may vary by location and type of vehicle.

So do you need travel insurance? A good rule of thumb is if the amount you could lose is more than you want to lose (or can afford to lose) if something goes wrong, get the insurance. Best credit card ever

In total I have 15 credit cards, half of them have a limit of over $5k…. But I have never been treated so well like I have been with Discover, in my experience when you apply they’re very generous with their starting amount, minimum they give you an accurate amount according to your credit worthiness. When I first applied I was in the 680s to 690s with MyFico score system, No late payments but 1 electronic bill collection that was paid but not removed from my CR, anyway Discover started me out with $10k, and after a year’s worth of fully paid payments each month & a few payments that was $100 to $200 on top of minimum due payment they’ve increased my credit to $15k! don’t forget to take advantage of the first year no interest fees, but if possible still try to pay off your full amount each month regardless of no interest rate. But as long as you keep your account in good standing, discover will treat you good. Also it’s a excellent credit score booster. Now I’m in the mid 700s and credit cards are looking for me with pre approvals many with no hard inquiries And now I turn down credit offers!

As a customer of Discover Card for more than 30 years, I can honestly say that this bank has treated me better than any other bank. Financially, I’m in great shape now and I don’t need much help. But when times were tough, I was always able to call up Discover and they worked with me to get through the rough time. Once or twice a year I notice credit line increases, which tells me that someone is paying attention and silently saying “Thanks for being a customer. We like you and trust you. Here’s some more money, go have some fun.” It’s my lowest interest rate credit card, so I’m not really worried if I can’t pay it off in a particular month and need to pay a little interest on the next statement. They don’t crush me with ridiculous interest. The rewards are excellent. I save the reward money for the end of the year, and it literally pays for Christmas. And every now and then I’ll take a personal loan to cover a big expense, which is an effortless experience and is nicely managed in the app. Thank you Discover for being a great bank and helping me fund my life over the years. Keep up the great work.

Horrible customer service and computing errors

Last two times I went to make a payment, I specifically changed it from the default bank to my work provided bank account. Despite this, it’s taking the money from my default account that is hardly used and doesn’t have the funds to cover. While I’m not sure if this is the company or apps fault, they refuse to fix or change anything, and when trying to use the live chat, it keeps exited me out of the app and even deleted my chat history. Good thing I got screenshots. Then it started me back at the beginning of talking to the virtual assistant, and I lost what little progress I had made talking to the first agent I had before the app closed out on me. I have been charged $70 in overdraft fees from them taking money from the wrong account that I explicitly told them not to do again the first time this happened. Since you’re downloading this app, it’s too late to warn you about the horrible customer service and not choose this credit card, but be prepared to have no solution to your problem after over an hour of trying to deal with representatives through this app. I will be paying off my card by transferring money through my work account to my default account, which I shouldn’t have to do since I paid them just fine in the past, and then closing my account with this horrid company.

It’s the realization no traveler wants to have: Your flight is delayed, canceled or diverted, and as a result, you’ll miss your connection or otherwise not make it where you’re trying to go.

It’s a frustrating situation, but it doesn’t always have to be the end of the world – or even the end of your trip. Ultimately, airlines want to get you where you’re trying to get to, and sometimes, you can help smooth that process by doing your research and being prepared when you finally have your turn with customer service.

So the next time your travel plans go awry, here are the things to remember.

Tight connection? Let a flight attendant know

If your flight is delayed and you have a connection, you may still be able to continue without too much hassle. 

Nadia Henry, a travel adviser who goes by Sparkle professionally, told me flight attendants may be able to help make that connection a little easier for you.

“If the flight is not full, they can move their seat up if they’re nice,” she said. “They can make an announcement that there are people that are on a connecting flight, (so) please let these people off first.” 

A few weeks ago, I heard the cabin crew leader on my flight announce multiple times that there were many passengers on our plane with tight connections after a long delay before our departure. He requested that everyone allow those passengers off first, and the message seems to have stuck. It was the first time I can remember in ages that people generally stayed in their seats when we arrived at the gate.

Sparkle added, however, that flight attendants may not know your predicament if you don’t ask for help, so it’s important to be your own advocate if you encounter problems while traveling.

Research your alternatives

Being your own advocate isn’t limited to asking flight attendants for help. If you’re going to miss a connection or your flight has been canceled, you may need to have all or part of your trip rebooked.

In that case, it’s a good idea to approach customer service with your preferred flights if you’re not able to rebook them yourself. Many airlines now offer self-service rebooking tools on their apps and websites, but those don’t always present every option.

So, how can you do this research? Well, first, download the airline’s app on your phone before you travel. That will be the easiest way to get updates and make changes to your itinerary on the fly if something goes wrong. Take advantage of inflight Wi-Fi or service on the ground to get a jump on your fellow passengers when it comes to looking up your options and rebooking yourself. The sooner you can make those changes, the more options will be available.

“Doing your homework before you get to the counter is always good. You can be proactive to let the representative know 'I already looked this up,'” Sparkle said. Especially when agents are dealing with multiple delays and cancellations, knowing what flights you want when you get to the counter can help make their job easier because it means they don’t have to spend time searching for those alternatives for you.

Sparkle also said airlines can sometimes rebook you on other carriers, so it’s worth seeing what other airlines have available as well.

Keep in mind there are no guarantees when things go wrong like this. Your preferred flights might not be available, or your airline might not have a partnership deal to get you on another carrier you’re requesting, but it never hurts to ask.

 Like most things in air travel, airlines usually accommodate elite frequent flyers and passengers in premium cabins first when things get disrupted. But if you don’t have status and you’re flying economy, you can still maximize your chances of getting your preferred alternate flights by using self-service rebooking tools as soon as possible. You can also reach out to airlines on multiple platforms, such as through their app or social media, while waiting to get customer service help at the airport. If you have lounge access, you also may be able to take advantage of shorter customer service lines there.

Zach Griff, a fellow aviation journalist at The Points Guy, recently posted a thread on social media about his best practices when he encounters flight disruptions, and researching alternative flights was his No. 1 piece of advice.

Know your rights

Different airlines have different policies around rebooking, including hotel and meal vouchers, when your flight is delayed or canceled for reasons within their control.

The U.S. Department of Transportation has a dashboard that outlines each carrier’s rules, and a quick check before you get to the customer service counter or connect with a representative electronically or on the phone can help you understand what you can and can’t ask for in your situation.

For example, Alaska, American, Delta, JetBlue and United Airlines will rebook you on other airlines if your flight is significantly delayed for reasons they control. But Allegiant, Frontier, Hawaiian, Southwest and Spirit Airlines won’t.

You may be entitled to a refund

If your flight is canceled for any reason and you choose not to travel on the alternatives your airline offers you, you’re eligible for a refund to your original form of payment – even if you bought a nonrefundable ticket.

The Transportation Department recently announced changes to its mandatory refund policies that will take effect this fall. These policies include automatic refunds if a service you pay for, like onboard Wi-Fi, doesn’t work on your flight. 

One more tip

Beyond advocating for yourself during a travel hiccup, Sparkle said there are things you can do to prepare.

“Always keep any important medication in your carry-on bag. Also, always keep a small bag, whether a knapsack or small carry-on, with a change of clothes and all your toiletries,” she said.

Before you cancel a credit card account

People have a variety of good reasons for canceling credit cards. You may decide you no longer want a credit card with an annual fee, you’d prefer a  travel credit card , or you’ve been approved for a credit card with a higher credit limit. But, if you’re canceling just because you have multiple credit cards and you want to clear out your wallet a little, you might reconsider. This is especially true if you have good credit and want to maintain a credit score.

Did you know? Canceling a credit card can affect your credit score by lowering your total amount of available credit, impacting your credit utilization ratio, and decreasing the average age of your accounts. This is true even for an unused credit card or a rarely used credit card.

Canceling a credit card lowers your total available credit, which increases your credit utilization ratio if you carry a credit card balance on any of your credit accounts. A higher  credit utilization  rate can lower your credit score.

The age of your credit cards is important, too. If you cancel an old card, the average age of your accounts could decrease, which can also lower your  credit score .

Step-by-step guide: How to cancel a credit card

  • Pay off your balance. Canceling your credit card doesn’t erase any  outstanding balances , accrued interest, or other fees that remain on your credit card account. Be sure to take care of your credit card debt before closing the account. If you haven’t paid off your balance, you’ll need to continue making payments to the credit card issuer after you close the account (and you’ll lose the available credit you may have had.) You may wish to set up automatic payments to pay off the remaining balance before you cancel.
  • Use any remaining rewards prior to canceling your credit account. If you don’t want to miss out on accrued points or rewards available on your credit card account through your rewards credit cards, redeem them prior to canceling. You may also be able to cash them in as a statement credit to help reduce your outstanding balance.
  • Notify other cardholders that you intend to close the account . If your spouse or other family members are authorized users on your account, be sure to let them know that you plan to close or cancel the card so they don’t continue to make purchases.
  • Request cancellation. Contact the credit card company’s customer service department by calling the number on the back of your card and letting them know you want to cancel the account.
  • Destroy your card. It’s a good security practice to shred or cut up your card before you throw it away, so the account number is no longer legible. Some credit card companies offer secure disposal options, like mailing the card back in a provided envelope, particularly for metal cards.
