Enjoy your favorite drink while gazing Chicago’s magnificent architecture and finish your cruise with a fabulous light show, at Navy Pier!

Fireworks, one of the Four Great Inventions of ancient China were invented in the 12th century.

Chicago approved City-Wide Use of Fireworks on the 4th of July 1893. Mayor of Chicago Patrick Eugene Prendergast issued a proclamation approving the use of fireworks to celebrate the World’s Colombian Exposition and to celebrate the nation’s 117th Independence Day.

This fascination with fireworks, noise, and color continues today. The City of Chicago offers a fireworks show at Navy Pier on Wednesdays at 9:30pm and Saturday nights at 10:15pm.

Drinks may be purchased individually with a credit card on the boat. Complimentary Coca-Cola soft drinks, lemonade, and cookies are included. Depending on lock traffic, our fireworks cruise will sail along one of two routes, river only or river and lake.

Join us at 8pm on Wednesday nights and 8:30pm on Saturdays for our narrated Architectural Fireworks 2-hour Cruise. There’s something for everyone on this one of a kind cruise!

* Subject to change, depends on lock traffic and weather conditions

The best guide on our whole USA trip. We took the Architecture tour where the boat meandered in between all of the incredible buildings of the city with the guide knowing EVERYTHING about each building; its style, age, height, architect, cost, purpose, owner ….. Quite brilliant! DrCumbrian / TripAdvisor

If you only have time for one sight-seeing event while in Chicago, do this. We really have no great interest in architecture, but this tour came highly recommended and we did not regret it. Allice I / Oklahoma
My wife and I very much enjoyed the Chicago Line Cruise jazz cruise... My spouse said this was one of the favorite things she has done in Chicago since moving here in the past year, and I agree. I am a jazz snob, and ... I was very pleased with the music offered by the Geordie Kelly group. He's a fine jazz guitarist, and his band was great. Augie R / Yelp

When do street closures begin for the 2024 Chicago Pride Parade?

NBC 5 Chicago News  will deliver commercial-free, live streaming coverage of the parade beginning at 11:15 a.m. CT in the player above. The stream will offer a non-cutaway viewing experience of the festive event via elevated cameras positioned at Sidetrack Chicago, a beloved institution on North Halsted Street.

In addition, NBCU Local Chicago’s live, sight & sounds coverage of the  2024 Chicago Pride Parade  will also be available for viewing on the following digital platforms:

  • NBCChicago.com  – NBCChicago.com/WatchNow
  • NBC Chicago app  –  NBC Chicago app

The NBC 5 Chicago News 24/7 live streaming channel can be viewed on Peacock, Roku, Samsung TV Plus, Amazon Fire TV, Pluto TV, Xumo Play, Google Play, Freevee, TCLtv+ and Local Now.

NOTE: The  NBC 5 Chicago News   24/7 streaming channel will also re-air its coverage of the Pride Parade on Sunday night at 8:00 PM.

The annual celebration will be the city's 53rd pride parade, serving as "the crowning event of Pride Month in Chicago." But this year's rendition will come with a number of changes from previous years.

Feeling out of the loop? We'll catch you up on the Chicago news you need to know. Sign up for the weekly Chicago Catch-Up newsletter here.

The parade will shift its start time from 12 p.m. to 11 a.m., and its route will be shortened by at least six to seven blocks. Organizers have also changed the starting location; this year it'll be the intersection of Sheridan Road and Broadway. The parade will travel from Sheridan and Broadway (3900 N. Broadway), continue south along Broadway, then Halsted, east along Belmont to Broadway, then south to Diversey.

In addition to the new time and route, the parade will also be reduced in size -- with organizers  citing safety and logistical concerns coming from the city’s Department of Transportation and Chicago police.

If you're planning on heading to the parade or decide to attend last minute, taking public transportation might be your best bet. The large number of visitors, combined with the nearly two dozen parking restrictions and street closures, could lead to delays. You can find a full list of street closures here.

When it comes to prime viewing locations, you have a few options.

The busiest viewing spot is on Halsted between Belmont and Addison, organizers previously said. Anyone looking to watch at that location will want to arrive early to secure the best view.

Another notable spot is on Broadway from Belmont to Oakdale.

You won't be able to watch from the assembly area north of Sheridan, which is "closed for staging."

Nearly 71 Million People Expected to Travel over July 4th Week

This year’s extended independence day forecast exceeds pre-pandemic numbers, sets new record.

day cruises chicago

WASHINGTON, DC (June 20, 2024) – AAA projects 70.9 million travelers will head 50 miles or more from home over the Independence Day holiday travel period*. For the first time, AAA looked at the entire July 4 th week, plus the Saturday before and the Sunday after the holiday. This year’s projected number of travelers for that time period is a 5% increase compared to 2023 and an 8% increase over 2019.

“With summer vacations in full swing and the flexibility of remote work, more Americans are taking extended trips around Independence Day,” said Paula Twidale, Senior Vice President of AAA Travel. “We anticipate this July 4 th week will be the busiest ever with an additional 5.7 million people traveling compared to 2019.”

Share of Travelers by Mode pie chart and Number of Travelers by Mode table

AAA projects a record 60.6 million people will travel by car over Independence Day week – that’s an additional 2.8 million travelers compared to last year. This year’s number also surpasses 2019 when 55.3 million people traveled by car over July 4 th week. AAA car rental partner Hertz says Dallas, Denver, Salt Lake City, Los Angeles, and San Francisco are the cities displaying the highest rental demand during the holiday week. The busiest pick-up days are projected to be Friday, June 28, Saturday, June 29, and Wednesday, July 3.

Gas prices are lower than last year when the national average was $3.53. Pump prices will likely continue going down leading up to Independence Day.  At that point, they will likely level off and remain relatively stable until after Labor Day, similar to last year.  An important caveat is hurricane season – underway now – which could affect gas prices should a storm negatively impact Gulf Coast oil production and refining centers.

The number of air travelers is also expected to set a new record. AAA projects 5.74 million people will fly to their July 4 th destinations. That’s an increase of nearly 7% compared to last year and a 12% increase over 2019. AAA booking data shows domestic airfare is 2% cheaper this Independence Day week compared to last year, and the average price for a domestic roundtrip ticket is $800. Airports will be packed throughout the week. AAA recommends arriving 2 hours early, reserving parking ahead of time, and traveling with carry-on luggage versus checked bags to save time and money.

More than 4.6 million people are expected to travel by other modes of transportation, including buses, cruises, and trains. This category is seeing an increase of 9% compared to last year, but this year’s number is shy of 2019’s figure of 4.79 million. Cruising continues its remarkable post-pandemic comeback. This time of year, Alaska cruises are in high demand, making Seattle and Anchorage top domestic destinations. Cruise travelers are also finding deals this summer. With new ships coming onto the market – and going for a premium – some cruise lines have been offering targeted discounts to fill older inventory for remaining cabins.

Best/Worst Times to Drive and Peak Congestion by Metro

INRIX , a provider of transportation data and insights, says the worst times to travel by car before and on July 4 th are between 2pm and 7pm. Drivers should hit the road in the morning, and travelers returning on Monday, July 8 th should avoid rush hour traffic in the morning and afternoon.

“Drivers in large metro areas can expect the worst traffic delays on Wednesday, July 3 rd , as they leave town, and Sunday, July 7th, as they return,” said Bob Pishue, transportation analyst at INRIX. “R oad trips over the holiday week could take up to 67% longer than normal. Travelers should monitor 511 services, local news stations, and traffic apps for up-to-the-minute road conditions.”

Please note that the times listed below are for the time zone in which the metro is located.

For example, Atlanta routes = ET and Los Angeles routes = PT.

  Top Destinations

This July 4 th week, travelers are cooling off in the Pacific Northwest and Alaska – and by the ocean! Seattle, Vancouver, and Anchorage are top destinations because of the popularity of Alaska cruises this time of year. Beaches in South Florida, Honolulu, Punta Cana, and Barcelona are in high demand. Historical sites in European cities like London, Rome, Dublin, Paris, and Athens are also popular. The top 10 domestic and international destinations below are based on AAA booking data.

Family Road Trip Checklist

With road trips expected to set a new record this July 4 th week, AAA teamed up with Chicco to share safety tips for families with young children.

  • Check car seat fit. Before you hit the road, check your child’s weight and height to ensure they’re in the right seat and mode of use – especially when it comes to transitioning from rear to forward-facing. Children should remain rear-facing as long as possible for better protection of their head, neck, and spine in the event of a crash. If you are unsure which car seat is best for your child, Chicco offers a car seat comparison guide.
  • Double check car seat installation. Even if your car seat is already installed in the car, it’s worth checking everything is safe and secure. An easy at-home way to do this is with the “inch test.” Simply grab the seat at the car seat belt path and pull side to side and front to back. If it moves more than one inch in any direction, uninstall and start over until a secure fit is achieved. For any questions, utilize the car seat manual, QR codes, or online resources like those offered by Chicco.
  • Secure loose items in the car. Take time to organize and clean up your car before hitting the road. Storage organizers that secure to the back of the driver and passenger seats are simple solutions to make sure everything has a spot, especially loose items that can become projectiles in case of a sudden stop.
  • Be prepared for the unexpected. Pack an emergency kit with first-aid supplies, water, snacks, blankets, jumper cables, and flares. Make sure your phone is fully charged – and keep a charger in the car – to call AAA or request roadside assistance digitally if your battery dies, you lock yourself out, or you need a tow.
  • Map your route. Families with young children should plan for frequent and longer stops along the way. Map out your route ahead of time with AAA TripTik and browse hotels, restaurants, and other activities along the way on AAA Trip Canvas.
  • Bring entertainment. Make sure to place toys and books within reach to keep children entertained. If your kids use tablets or other electronics, make sure the devices are fully charged and pre-downloaded before leaving home. Another fun way to get the whole family excited for the road trip is to create a family playlist of everyone’s favorite songs!

Holiday Forecast Methodology

Travel Forecast

In cooperation with AAA, S&P Global Market Intelligence (SPGMI) developed a unique methodology to forecast actual domestic travel volumes. The economic variables used to forecast travel for the current holiday are leveraged from SPGMI’s proprietary databases. These data include macroeconomic drivers such as employment, output, household net worth, asset prices, including stock indices, interest rates, housing market indicators, and variables related to travel and tourism, including gasoline prices, airline travel, and hotel stays. AAA and SPGMI have quantified holiday travel volumes going back to 2000.

Historical travel volume estimates come from DK SHIFFLET’s TRAVEL PERFORMANCE/Monitor SM . The PERFORMANCE/Monitor SM is a comprehensive study measuring the travel behavior of U.S. residents. DK SHIFFLET contacts over 50,000 U.S. households each month to obtain detailed travel data, resulting in the unique ability to estimate visitor volume and spending, identify trends, and forecast U.S. travel behavior, all after the trips have been taken.

The travel forecast is reported in person-trips. In particular, AAA and SPGMI forecast the total U.S. holiday travel volume and expected mode of transportation. The travel forecast presented in this report was prepared the week of May 27, 2024.

Because AAA forecasts focus on domestic leisure travel only, comparisons to TSA passenger screening numbers should not be made. TSA data includes all passengers traveling on both domestic and international routes. Additionally, TSA screens passengers each time they enter secured areas of the airport, therefore each one-way trip is counted as a passenger tally. AAA focuses on person-trips, which include the full round-trip travel itinerary. As a result, direct comparisons of AAA forecast volumes and daily TSA screenings represent different factors.

*Independence Day Holiday Travel Period

For this forecast, the Independence Day holiday travel period is defined as the nine-day period from Saturday, June 29 to Sunday, July 7. Historically, the Independence Day holiday period included only one weekend. This is the first year the Independence Day holiday travel period is a longer timeframe with two weekends included.

Olympics | Simone Biles moves closer to 3rd Olympic trip as injuries mount behind her at US gymnastics trials

Simone Biles competes on the balance beam at the U.S. Olympic gymnastics trials on June 28, 2024, in Minneapolis. (Charlie Riedel/AP)

She is well-versed in the danger lurking at every turn, every twist, every landing. Blocking it all out and forging ahead may be her greatest skill, one that was put to the test on Friday night at the U.S. Olympic trials.

Before Biles hopped on the uneven bars in her first event, Kayla DiCello’s hopes of joining Biles in Paris ended with a torn right Achilles suffered a few feet away on vault.

A short time later, Shilese Jones gingerly made her off the floor with a leg injury that left the six-time world championship medalist’s status very much up in the air.

It’s a lot to take in, even for a 27-year-old who has made the impossible look impossibly easy so often for so long.

The whole meet is, as she put it, “so stressful, so heavy.”

“If we can do this, we can do anything,” she added.

So while there were some uncharacteristically sloppy moments early, there was a splash of Biles’ singular brilliance late on her way to an all-around total of 58.900 that put her position to lock up an automatic berth on the five-woman team that will be announced on Sunday night.

Still, it was hard to shake the image of two of her peers exiting in tears, all of it accompanied by an ever-present fear that never really goes away no matter how long you do this for a living.

“There is anxiety,” Biles longtime co-coach Laurent Landi said. “(It’s) all right am I the next one to get hurt? What’s going to happen to me?'”

Landi’s advice was simple and direct, long the most effective way to communicate with the biggest star of the U.S. Olympic movement.

“You can’t control this,” Landi told her. “So control the controllable.”

She did. Even on a night when she wasn’t at her unparalleled best, she left little doubt she remains in control of her gymnastics and — perhaps most important of all — in control of her emotions.

While there was an uncharacteristically sloppy and shaky balance beam routine that left Biles cursing for all the cameras to see, there was also a standing ovation that accompanied her Yurchenko Double Pike vault, the one that’s named after her in the sport’s Code of Points and is among the most difficult done in the world by anyone, man or woman.

And so it goes for Biles, who will head to Paris heavily favored to bookend the Olympic all-around gold she won as a teenager in 2016.

A lot has happened since then, marriage, a fistful of world titles and a memorable trip to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, where she removed herself from multiple finals to focus on her mental health.

She took a two-year break from competition after returning from Japan but has looked as good as ever for most of the last 12 months, joking after her record ninth national title earlier this month she’s “aging like fine wine.”

Biles hardly seems to be the only one.

Jordan Chiles, 23, is surging toward an Olympic spot just as she did three years ago. She finished in the top six on all four events on Friday, heady territory considering injuries earlier this year appeared to dim her chances of making it to Paris.

Now, not so much. Yet Chiles laughed when asked if her previous experience in this spot helped her navigate the complex emotions of a meet that can alter the life of the five women who hear their name called at the end of it.

“No,” Chiles said. “I literally was saying this earlier this morning. I was like ‘No matter what meet I’ve done in my life, this is the most stressful one I’ve done in my whole entire career.’ Because it’s that one night it’s like you either find out you make it or you don’t.”

Chiles appears on the verge of a return to her sport’s biggest stage. So does reigning Olympic champion Sunisa Lee.

The 21-year-old Lee, who has spent most of the last two years battling kidney-related health issues, used a pair of excellent sets on uneven bars and balance beam in front of a hometown crowd to finish third.

Behind Lee was 24-year-old Jade Carey, the reigning Olympic champion on floor exercise. Carey, who has spent the last three years deftly straddling the line between collegiate and elite gymnastics, finished second behind Biles on vault and fourth on floor.

The biggest question heading into Sunday will center on who will land the fifth spot. Joscelyn Roberson — at 18 one of the younger athletes in the 13-woman field — used a powerful set on floor to finish fifth.

Yet USA Gymnastics officials stress they are not married to the idea of taking the top five in rank order at the end of trials, which is what happened under previous leadership in 2021.

Kaliya Lincoln put up the second-best score on floor. Hezley Rivera appears to be improving with each passing meet and 2020 Olympic alternate and four-time world championship medalist Leanne Wong has plenty of international experience.

Jones, the top American gymnast not named Biles when healthy, has spent most of the last two years looking essentially like a lock. That likely ended before the competition even officially began

The 21-year-old arrived at the Target Center already nursing a slightly torn labrum in her right shoulder. Then she landed awkwardly while warming up on vault, wrenching her left knee.

She exited briefly but returned to be introduced with the rest of the field. She skipped the vault in the first rotation but returned to grit through the uneven bars, her best event.

While Jones put together an excellent 14.625 even while doing a slightly watered-down routine, she gingerly made her way off the podium. She talked to medical staff for several minutes before leaving for good.

Whether Jones tries to give it a shot on Sunday is unclear. What is clear — what has always been clear since making her senior debut in 2013 — is that there is Biles, and there is everyone else.
