SILVERSTEIN Announces 'Misery Made Me' 2023 North American Tour; BLABBERMOUTH.NET Presale

Canadian rock band SILVERSTEIN will embark on the "Misery Made Me" North American tour next spring. Beginning on Thursday, March 23 in Ottawa, Ontario at Bronson, the band will visit over 25 cities across North America, including stops in Pittsburgh, New Orleans, Las Vegas, San Diego, Cleveland and more before wrapping up in Grand Rapids on Sunday, May 7 at The Intersection. Joining them on this run are special guests DAYSEEKER , SEEYOUSPACECOWBOY and ONE STEP CLOSER .

A special BLABBERMOUTH.NET presale will begin on Wednesday, December 7 at 10:00 a.m. EST and end on Thursday, December 8 at 10:00 p.m. local time. When prompted, type in the presale code "peaceinmisery" to access tickets before the general public. General on-sale will be Friday, December 9 at 10 a.m. local time.

SILVERSTEIN said: "We're incredibly excited to come back to the U.S. and Canada, with some awesome bands, rocking out in some cities we don't get a chance to play every day! We hand selected all the openers as they're truly the best artists doing it in their respective genres right now. Make sure you come early and stay late! It's an amazing lineup. Get ready to experience a set of new and old classics, with the best production we've ever had to compliment it. We are leaving it all on the stage this tour, with our most elaborate and intense performance ever."

SILVERSTEIN released its latest studio album, "Misery Made Me" , earlier this year via UNFD . Inspired by the past two years, "Misery Made Me" is a depiction of SILVERSTEIN — and world at large's — collective turmoil, frustration, and anxiety. It's a record that is a product of the moment in time in which it was created yet doesn't feel like it will date itself anytime soon, as many of its topics of loneliness, anxiety and isolation are eternal human struggles.

SILVERSTEIN has continued to build on its already-wide reaching impact. Immersing itself in new technologies like TikTok , Discord , the metaverse and Twitch (even holding public writing sessions with fans over the latter) during its formation, the band has confirmed its unique ability to adapt and connect in all cycles of its career.

It's both intriguing and inspiring that a band — who could have merely rested on the impressive legacy they've already cemented — would continue to dig deep and find the inspiration to reach people in meaningful new ways. "Misery Made Me" is a campaign hinged on SILVERSTEIN 's reflection and gratitude for their roots, their honoring of their earliest fans, and their staunch desire to explore forward-thinking and adventurous ways to connect with new ones.

Good show with a good retrospective of their 20 years. They found a good way of integrating all of their multiple styles into a good 2.15 hours starting with a bunch of their favorite followed by an acoustic set and finishing with the complete Discovering the Waterfront album in order. I have seen them about 7 times already but I like that for this one they brought an additional member to cover all the violins, cello, keyboard parts to reproduce as close possible the original songs as they were originally recorded.

Great show!

Amazing show. Third time I see them never disappoint. I also met beautiful people who shares the love and admiration that I have for this band. Looking forward to the next 20 years of your career. Please do not stop making music. Thano you.

This show was fantastic, as always! The crowd was great, but the showmanship of Silverstein was on full display. It's been awhile since the last time I thoroughly enjoyed a concert like I did this one. Tonight, Alive was also wonderful. Jenna McDougall is always an inspiration, and the band did a magnificent job. An A+ show, hands down!

After an exhaustive search, the BSO appoints a new concertmaster

  • Andrea Shea

Nathan Cole will be the BSO’s 11th concertmaster since the orchestra was founded in 1881. (Courtesy Boston Symphony Orchestra/Todd Rosenberg)

The concertmaster position at the Boston Symphony Orchestra that has been vacant for five years has finally been filled. Nathan Cole begins his new job when the BSO's season at Tanglewood kicks off in July.

Cole will be the BSO’s 11th concertmaster since the orchestra was founded in 1881. His predecessor Malcolm Lowe held the Charles Munch chair for 35 years before retiring in 2019.

The role of concertmaster is prestigious and highly coveted, charged not only with leading the first violin section, but also performing violin solos. Look up at the stage during a show, and the concertmaster sits in the first chair to the left of the conductor’s podium. The concertmaster also leads the orchestra in tuning before live programs and rehearsals to ensure the musicians produce a unified sound.

According to BSO music director Andris Nelsons, he and the orchestra chose Cole after exhaustive rounds of auditions that began in January. As a guest concertmaster, the violinist led the orchestra through performances of a demanding 1934 Shostakovich opera.

“We had immense pleasure collaborating with Nathan last January on Shostakovich’s Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk," Nelsons said in a statement, "and we look forward to embracing his leadership within the orchestra, exploring our joint musical values, and partnering on our artistic journey together to serve the great music both within and beyond our Boston community."

Since 2011 Cole has been first associate concertmaster with the Los Angeles Philharmonic,  where he soloed many times at the Walt Disney Concert Hall and Hollywood Bowl. The BSO’s new president and CEO Chad Smith also hailed from the Los Angeles Philharmonic before coming to Boston last fall.

Prior to his position in Los Angeles, Cole was a member of the Chicago Symphony and principal second violin for the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra. He’s been guest concertmaster for orchestras in other cities including Houston, Seattle and Pittsburgh.

Cole’s life in music started as a child in Lexington, Kentucky. His parents and grandfather were professional musicians. Cole took the stage with the Louisville Orchestra when he was just 10 years old. The violinist attended the Curtis Institute of Music.

His first appearances as the BSO’s new concertmaster will be in Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade at Tanglewood. During Cole's first full season with the BSO he’ll perform at Carnegie Hall, the Shostakovich Festival in Leipzig, and during the orchestra’s European tour in 2025. Cole will also lead the Boston Symphony Chamber Players as artistic director.

“This opportunity to be the BSO’s next concertmaster feels like something that I’ve been waiting for my whole life,” Cole said in a statement.

“Looking back, I feel fortunate to have known two people who held the position before me, Malcolm Lowe and Joseph Silverstein. Silverstein was one of my idols, and I grew up with many of the Boston Symphony Chamber Players recordings. Any time that I had to learn a piece, BSCP would have a recording of it with Silverstein leading, so I had his sound in my ear early on and was lucky to get to work with him before he passed away. But I always got the sense that he knew he was a custodian of the position, and that everything he did was for his colleagues and for the music, and that’s something that I want to carry forward.”

Cole added his wife and three children are excited to move to New England.

Correction: An earlier version of this story misspelled Andris Nelsons' name. We regret the error.

No one will have more pressure on their shoulders than Scottie Scheffler, who will look to become the first golfer since 2015 to win the first two major championships of the year. The beautify of May will surround Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville as the PGA Championship returns to down for the first time in a decade. This year's 106th affair is set with a loaded field featuring most of the best golfers in the world.

Scheffler, the 2024 Masters champion, has not only won consecutive PGA Tour starts but four of the last five events in which he has played. Given his ability and how locked in he looks on the course, it's no surprise that he's the clear favorite in the field. But not only that, Scheffler's play has given talk of a grand slam some legitimacy. The PGA would also mark the second leg of his personal slam journey given his major championship mantle consists of two green jackets over the last three years.

Just behind Scheffler on the odds board are Brooks Koepka and Rory McIlroy, both of whom have also won their last two starts. Koepka has been playing exceptionally well overseas, and while he finished T45 at the Masters last month, he's also the reigning PGA champion seeking to go back-to-back for the second time. In other words, he has a chance to lift the Wanamaker for the fourth time in seven years. McIlroy has gone without a major since the last playing of the PGA at Valhalla a decade ago, but he's clearly comfortable on this course and coming off a win in the Wells Fargo Championship where he dominated another familiar venue at Quail Hollow.

While attending the PGA Championship can be a ton of fun, simply being able to watch golf on the game's grandest stages is an incredible treat each year. We here at CBS Sports are thrilled to bring you wall-to-wall coverage of the PGA Championship throughout this week with action streaming live all weekend.

Also at Valhalla for CBS Sports are Ian Baker-Finch, Frank Nobilo, Dottie Pepper, Colt Knost and Mark Immelman with Amanda Renner reporting and conducting interviews.

The 106th PGA Championship is the 34rd consecutive (and 41th overall) broadcast by CBS Sports, which will offer multi-platform coverage throughout the week. In partnership with the PGA of America, CBS Sports will lead overall production efforts deploying 125 cameras and nearly 150 microphones to capture all the sights and sounds. 9 protesters arrested during Biden’s Detroit visit, group says

silverstein tour

At least nine people were arrested Sunday after protesting President Biden’s Gaza war policy outside his campaign stop in Detroit, demonstration organizers said, adding that one was tased in the process.

Organizer Brian Silverstein of Detroit Will Breathe, one of several groups behind the event, said three protesters were arrested during the rally and six afterward. At least four were issued misdemeanor citations for interfering with an officer and two “were likely being charged with felonies,” he said.

Police used a Taser on one organizer while he was pinned to the ground, according to a statement from the group released Monday, which also said that all nine have been released from jail.

"These attacks are part of a national trend of escalating repression of dissent, an attack on the right to free speech, and an attack on anyone standing against the genocide of Palestinians and protesting state violence," the statement said. "These attacks are not only sanctioned by the Democratic Party but a clear expression of their willingness to use violence and force to silence the movement."

The department did not immediately confirm the number of arrests and reason for them.

Video posted to social media showed Detroit police apprehend several people following the largely peaceful demonstration outside the 69th annual NAACP Freedom Fund Dinner, where Biden was keynote speaker. An officer is seen holding a taser as he stands over a protester laying on the sidewalk with his hands zip tied behind his back.

Dozens marched from Hart Plaza to the event at Huntington Place Sunday evening, waving Palestinian Flags and chanting "Say it loud, say it clear, Biden we don't want you here."

Once stationed behind barricades outside the building, a police official told demonstrators to move or face arrest for loitering, saying the event was not permitted, video showed.

Tensions rose as a line of police officers wearing regular uniforms closed in on the barricades.

In one video posted online, a demonstrator is seen pushing a barricade against officers and an officer responds by reaching over and grabbing the demonstrator's head.

Another that went viral shows a police lieutenant telling a demonstrator, “Why don’t you go back to Mexico … you were hanging out there and having a good time.” A demonstrator called the comment racist in the clip. One of the protest leaders, however, recently posted social media photos from a trip to Mexico. WXYZ reported the department was investigating the comment.

The protest was the second to greet Biden during his Sunday visit to metro Detroit, where he's faced significant backlash over his handling of the Gaza war, particularly among Arab Americans. Earlier in the day, he was met with chants of “Genocide Joe” during a stop at the Ford Community & Performing Arts Center in Dearborn.

The U.S. has given more than $14 billion in military aid to Israel since it launched its war on Gaza following Hamas’ Oct. 7 attacks.

Earlier this month, Biden paused some weapons shipments to the country and threatened to further curtail spending in opposition to Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu’s planned ground invasion of the port city of Rafah, where more than half of Gaza’s population has sought shelter. At the same time, however, Biden signaled he would move forward on another $1 billion sale of arms and ammunition to the country.

2024 PGA Championship prize money, purse: Payouts for Xander Schauffele, golfers from $18.5 million pool

This year's purse represents the largest in pga championship history.

wanamaker-trophy-pga-valhalla-2024-g.png

The Wanamaker Trophy and a substantial winner's check were awarded Sunday at Valhalla Golf Club to Xander Schauffele, winner of the 2024 PGA Championship . Raising the purse for the PGA Championship by $1 million from a year ago, the PGA of America is shelling out the largest prize pool in the history of its championship with a total purse of $18.5 million.

A hefty $3.3 million prize will be awarded to Schauffele for going 21 under in Louisville with seven-figure sums being paid out to those golfers who finished on the podium but fell short of the top prize. Every player inside the top 10 by the end of the championship is taking home at least $500,000 with each golfer inside the top 31 cashing a check north of $100,000.

The payouts fall slightly short of those handed out after the 2024 Masters -- and from signature events on the PGA Tour -- both of which held purses of $20 million. Scottie Scheffler won $3.6 million for capturing his second green jacket, though that didn't even represent his largest payday of the season as he claimed $4 million at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and $4.5 million at the Players Championship.

Not only did those who made the weekend come away from their time in Kentucky with a little green to show for it, so will those who missed the cut. All players who carded a 36-hole total will receive $4,000 for their troubles. Considering how many PGA professionals were in the field, that's not bad for two days work.

Let's take a look at a breakdown of the PGA Championship purse.

Rick Gehman, Greg DuCharme, Patrick McDonald and Mark Immelman recap the 2024 PGA Championship at Valhalla. Follow & listen to The First Cut on  Apple Podcasts  and  Spotify .
