American Tourister Curio Review

FEATURED PRODUCT

American Tourister Curio

If you want a pop of color in your travels, this is the perfect suitcase for you. It comes in a few very bright colors, and then there are also the classic black and white.

American Tourister is actually owned by Samsonite  – one of the leaders of the luggage manufacturing market. So, you can expect their suitcases to be pretty high quality, just with a more affordable price tag – and that’s exactly what the Curio is.

But of course, you won’t buy the suitcase just because of its color – you want to buy it because of its awesome features. And I’m here to tell you all about the features of the Curio, so let’s begin!

Overview Of The Curio Collection

American Tourister Curio Hardside Luggage with Spinner Wheels, Black, Checked-Medium 25-Inch

As always, the first thing we will look at is the basic specifications of this luggage. The Curio collection features three suitcases; the smallest one is a carry-on, and the other two would have to be checked at an airport .

What’s the first thing you noticed? The weight, right? Yeah,  I was also surprised to see that  the Curio luggage  was this lightweight . Generally, 20″ suitcases weigh about 6-7 lbs, so this is really impressive. I like to say that every ounce counts – when we are talking about air travel. That’s because airlines have weight restrictions for both in-cabin and checked baggage, and going over those restrictions means paying extra.

The other thing you can see is the dimensions – it’s always good to have the actual dimensions of a suitcase with the wheels and everything. That’s the only way you can be sure an airline will accept your carry-on, and you won’t have to check it.

I would love to tell you the exact capacity of each suitcase, but sadly I can’t . It’s not listed on American Tourister’s website, or on Amazon. But I presume it’s not too different from other luggage of similar size.

And that’s it for now. It’s time to take a look at all the features that this luggage is equipped with, and whether they are the bomb or not.

Luggage Materials

The Curio is a hard side suitcase  and its shell is  made of polypropylene.  That material is often used in luggage because it is really lightweight. It is one of the lightest plastics used in luggage, and you can definitely see that in the weight of these suitcases.

However,  polypropylene is not as sturdy or durable as other materials, namely polycarbonate . But it is just as prone to scratches as polycarbonate is, and you might want to consider getting a suitcase cover.

The good thing about the Curio is that it has  a ribbed shell , which really helps hide those scuffs. They won’t be as visible as they would be on a suitcase with a completely smooth shell, and your luggage will look as good as new for a while.

Double Spinner Wheels

This American Tourister  suitcase is equipped with  four double spinner wheels  – but you would expect spinners from any self-respecting hardshell. Because they have two wheels, something Samsonite puts on their more expensive suitcases, you can expect them to roll very smoothly, and you shouldn’t experience any issues with them.

In general,  a spinner wheel is a suitcase wheel that can turn 360 degrees.  So, you don’t have to tilt your suitcase to get the wheels rolling and you can actually push it or pull it however you want. That also means that there won’t be any strain on your arm, since you are not dragging a ton of bricks behind you anymore.

An upside to these wheels is that they give you superb maneuverability of your luggage . A downside, on the other hand, is that  they are pretty fragile  and can easily break them if you don’t treat them right – basically, just avoid dragging your luggage up or down the stairs, or across extremely uneven terrain if you want them to last.

Handles Of The Curio

The  wheel handle of this suitcase is a telescopic double-barrel handle . You can lock it into position when it’s stored and when it’s fully extended, but you can’t lock it into multiple height positions. That could be a problem who is rather tall or rather short since they won’t be able to adjust the height of the handle to suit them perfectly.

But you could always carry the suitcase in your hands – you know, preserve those wheels! It has  two carry handles for that scenario, which match the color of the suitcase. Oh, and the top of the wheel handle matches the color of the shell and I really like that.

TSA Approved Lock

If you fly frequently, then you know how important it is to have a lock on your suitcase. Especially when looking at checked baggage –  you DO NOT want someone else to be able to open up your suitcase . Not just because they could steal something, but because they could hide something illegal in your luggage, and then you would have to bear the consequences.

And if you  frequently fly to and from the United States, then you are probably familiar with the TSA . You know, those friendly agents that are basically the reason why you have to get to the airport about a week before your flight.

Jokes aside, TSA agents can choose to randomly inspect your suitcase. If your luggage has  a TSA-friendly lock , the agents can unlock easily, inspect the contents of the suitcase and then lock it back when they are done with it. And that is exactly the type of lock that the Curio is equipped it. It’s also  a recessed three-digit combination lock , and you get to set up the combination yourself.

About The Packing Compartments

My favorite thing about hard shells, in general, is the two packing compartments . It’s just so much easier to organize your stuff when you don’t have to shove everything into one tiny compartment!

The Curio  also has two; one compartment features  a zippered divider with a pocket , and the other is equipped with  elastic cross straps . And what I really like about the yellow suitcase, in particular, is that all the details inside match the color of the shell.

If you aren’t as impressed with that feature as I am, then just buy any other color. The matchy-matchy interior is characteristic only to the yellow luggage, and not the rest.

The  bottom compartment of Curio also features a single zippered pocket , for any of your smaller items. It’s not a lot, in terms of organization, but it is better than nothing – like we saw on  the Neopulse .

What We Don't Like

I told you what I loved about the suitcase, and now I’ll tell you exactly what I don’t like so much. Just keep in mind that I have very high standards when it comes to luggage, so I might be a bit more critical than you are.

  • That there are no external pockets . I like to organize my clothes because I generally keep everything in my suitcase throughout my trips. And so I like to have pockets for my socks, underwear, and a few external ones for maybe a book or my giant inflatable unicorn. And we saw that Delsey loves to put external pockets  on their luggage. However, this is a hard shell, so it’s not very common to find this on such suitcases.
  • The phantom handle.  The photos of the luggage on both Amazon and americantourister.com depict a side carry handle. But, when you check out the reviews, a lot of people complained that their suitcase didn’t come with that handle. I find that disappointing because I generally prefer the side handle when I actually have to pick up the suitcase since the weight is more evenly distributed that way.
  • Protrusion of the wheel handle.  But this is not just about this one suitcase, this is something I generally don’t like dealing with in hard side luggage. However, the fact is that double-barrel handles often protrude into the packing compartment and you have to pack around them. Be prepared for that.
  • Polypropylene construction . I’m ambivalent on this one – on the one hand, I love that the luggage is so lightweight because it means you can pack more stuff in it. And I love what it does for the price of the Curio. But, I prefer as strong a piece of luggage as I can find. However, given the price, you have to make compromises, and this is one of them.  But if you’re looking to get a carry-on, you won’t have to worry about this so much.
  • Capacity is not expandable.  This isn’t that big a deal, but it’s something you should be aware of. And I find this confusing, since most photos of the luggage show two zippers to the main compartment. But then again, they also show that phantom handle.

American Tourister Curio: Thumbs Up Or Down?

For now, I would still give it a thumbs up.

I think that the upsides outweigh the downsides. Yes, there are quite a few things that I’m not a fan of, but there are more things that I really like about  this collection from American Tourister .  I love the spinner wheels, the TSA-friendly lock, and the double packing compartments. But most of all, I really like the attractive price tag.

Yes, this luggage is very affordable, and so I don’t expect it to be top-notch. It’s definitely not for people who fly very often, but for people who fly just several times a year, it will do just fine. And with Samsonite as the parent company, you just know that the luggage is going to perform really well.

We recommend currently available suitcases with a CHOICE Expert Rating of 85% or more.

The CHOICE Expert Rating, our overall score, is made up of test results for performance (60%) and ease of use (40%). Weightings are in brackets.

We conduct technical tests to assess each suitcase's performance. The performance score for carry-on suitcases is weighted differently to check-in suitcases. For check-in suitcases, the score is made up of the lift-and-drop test (60%), stability test (20%), rain test (10%) and puncture test (10%). For carry-on suitcases, the weightings are 30% for both rain and lift-and-drop tests, 20% for stability and 20% for puncture.

Ease of use is assessed by three triallists (including our expert tester). They score each suitcase on aspects like balance and manoeuvrability. They also wheel the cases (with a 5kg load for carry-on and 15kg load for check-in) over a range of surfaces including grass, carpet, stairs, asphalt and footpaths.

Our testers pack carry-on cases with 4kg of clothing and check-in cases with 15kg clothing and place them on a tilting platform. The higher the score, the more stable the suitcase.

A heavy pointed cylinder is dropped onto the suitcase surface. The higher the score, the less visible damage.

We see how much water gets into the suitcases. The higher the score, the less likely rain will get into your case.

Carry-on suitcases are loaded with 4kg of clothing and check-in suitcases are packed with 15kg of clothing. We then subject our suitcases to 300 rounds of our lift-and-drop test, then grade the damage. Suitcases with no damage receive 100%. Those with substantial damage are heavily penalised (for example, a missing wheel and major cracks decreases the score by 50 percentage points).

We list the recommended retail price where possible for each suitcase. Shop around: in many cases, we found suitcases that were significantly cheaper than the recommended retail price.

Carry on luggage review, June 2024

Some time ago, I bought a cabin bag in Europe for travel on low cost airlines, it was an IT brand, very light weight. When I later wanted to use it on Jetstar, I checked the measurements and found it was slightly taller than the allowable size for domestic flights in Australia: Jetstar (HxWxD): 56cm x 36cm x 23cm Qantas (HxWxD): 56cm x 36cm x 23cm Virgin (HxWxD): 56cm x 36cm x 23cm

Of the carry on bags tested in the June Choice article:

none of the three recommended bags is compliant with these dimensions (all had at least two dimensions larger than required)s; of the 14 other bags, only two were compliant with airline requirements, the Kmart Anko and the Antler Brixham.

I have travelled with my bag on Jetstar a couple of times since without being challenged, although the bag was weighed. It fits with room to spare on the A320/1 family and the bigger international aircraft.

Should I be worried about the odd one or two cm non-compliance?

Generally not, which is qualified below.

Jetstar usually has carry on baggage testing frames near boarding gates one can check compliance with their own carry on bags. If it can fit in such frames, baggage complies. If one has a slightly oversized, rigid carry on, it is unlikely to be able to fit into the testing frame - if Jetstar checked such a bag, it may be refused as carry-on. A soft, compressible type bag, even if marginally exceeds the specified dimensions, is likely to he able to be squeezed into the testing frames. The testing frame is used rather than a tape measure.

In all the years of travelling, I (and many other passengers) have only been asked once to use the testing frames to demonstrate compliance. I travel with have a daypack which is less in the x and y dimension, but can be bigger in the z dimension especially if the front pocket is filled. Even when the z dimension is slightly bigger, it will readily squeeze into the frame.

I have always had the impression that if the carry-on bag looks big, they can test using the frames so a passenger can’t argue the point of whether a hag complies or not. The frame gives a indisputable outcome.

For your own interest, it might be worth testing your bag in the frame when you next fly…possibly away from your boarding gate just in case it doesn’t fit. If it can be easily squeezed into the frame, it should be okay.

There are obvious differences between the measurements Choice quoted in the reviews and those provided by retailers.

Looking to the AmericanTourister Curio 2 - 55cm carry on suitcase. At 55 x 35 x 25/28cm it is according to Myer and other retailers compliant with the 115cm total linear dimension limit, a common Aussie airline standard. Not unique to Myer looking at other popular online Australian sellers.

IMG_1566

The American Tourister Australian online website Avoids making a direct claim the product is carry on compliant and only indicates it is a 55cm size product.

Are we missing something in how the industry measures it products or what the airline industry actually measures? The product brands and models Choice reviewed and measured slightly larger include many well known. One answer - IATA - Passenger Baggage Rules .

IMG_1568

Luggage manufacturers cater for an international market. Would it be in the best interests of consumers in Australia to pay a premium for different sized luggage? Luggage the International carriers Qantas is competing against accept, codeshare another reason the IATA sizes might be routinely accepted.

Something Choice may like to take further, considering the luggage reviews are highlighting possibly deceptive and misleading conduct in the marketing of these suitcases? Or is it our Airline Industry that needs to change? @BrendanMays

IMG_1569

The Choice review said: External dimensions (H x W x D, cm) View more details. 57 x 41 x 23

P.S. I’ve an early version of the American Tourister model mentioned. It has been used frequently with the 2 major Aussie carriers and their offshoots. Domestic and International without issue.

Carry on luggage size varies between airlines, the IATA is a guide rather than an adopted standard (noting IATA is a industry association and doesn’t operate or build aircraft). The IATA also suggests one checks with airlines allowances. In relation to airlines, this website has standard carry on luggage sizes for major airlines operating in and out of Australia:

https://www.skyscanner.com.au/news/airlines/carry-on-luggage-size-and-weight-restrictions-for-international-flights

It is worth noting that the type of aircraft and seat class can vary carry on carry on allowance for a flight. I am personally aware of different plane types as in the past I regularly flew on Dash 8 aircraft with Qantas , where carry ons limit is smaller due to smaller storage places with the planes. Likewise with other smaller aircraft. Flight class (e.g business or first) can have more generous carry on allowance.

Myer would be correct that the particular luggage size is carry on, but as IATA indicates, one needs to check with individual airlines for their carry on allowance. The bag would meet allowances of some airlines/airliners, but not others.

In relation to codeshare, the allowance will be based on that outlined on the ticket. We have travelled internationally and domestically on the one booking, where carry on allowance is stated for each leg of the flight. We took carry on which met the smallest carry on allowance which in one case was for a ATR-72, similar sized plane to a Dash 8 Q400.

Except Myer did not say it is carry on nor I in reference to the Myer website screen shots. All references were to the physical dimensions. It’s different if one goes to the Tourister Brand’s Aussie website. That site uses carryon to describe the product and uses the 55cm size to describe the product.

I don’t see why we need to defend Myer in this instance. Or the other retailers who provide in the specifications for similar products dimensions which are less than the true size of the luggage. The self evident point is the dimensions Myer provide for the suit case is that it complies with the Australian Airline requirements for a 115cm case. The dimensions measured by Choice are not the same. The actual case Choice measured is larger than the Australian carriers permit. Either Choice is not representing the size of the case correctly or Myer and others understate the actual suit case size.

While IATA sizing is a recommendation, it appears the majority of the luggage sold in Australia is manufactured to the slightly larger size recommended by IATA. I addd the IATA reference as a possible reason for the majority of items of luggage sold in Australian as meeting carry on requirements, although they are in fact larger per the Choice review assessment.

Should Australian consumers be able to rely on the sizing advertised by an Australian retailer? Yes they should, but apparently they cannot. I’m referring to the physically quoted dimensions. It’s also deceptive when the cases that are catalogued in Australia as 55cm are on OS sites and listed as 22” or 56cm size. The former suggests they comply with Qantas etc. the second says they cannot.

IMG_1571

The screen shot from Myer website above says:

Luggage Size: Carry On

Yes it does, I overlooked it. But does that change the fact the dimensions indicated by Myer are not correct for that product? That is according to Choice. It was how the comparison was presented. Any one purchasing the product per Myer would do so expecting both carry on and dimensionally acceptable for Australia.

Choice has done all a favour in its review indicating the variation in sizes.

Choice states:

We measure suitcases in their standing position. When calculating the height, we include the wheels. We round up our measurements to the next highest cm, so there may be some variations between our calculations and the ones provided by manufacturers.

Myer, or more correctly American Tourister as this will be where the information would have originated, doesn’t specify what their dimensions represent. It is possibly only the walls of the bag and does not include the handles or wheels.

What in Australia, economy, business, first class, larger jet aircraft or smaller regional aircraft, every airline in Australia…?

There isn’t ‘one shoe that fits every foot’. It would be challenging for Choice to specify an allowance as it wouldn’t be representative of every commercial flight in Australia. Do they use the minimum size allowance (such as for Dash 8 or smaller aircraft operators such as a SAAB 340 or Metroliner), the average for all airlines or the maximum allowance for any airline. If they use any of these, it isn’t representative of the allowance for every flight, hence, the recommendation that one should check each flight allowance (as they can change even in the same airline as indicated above).

Even Choice acknowledges different airlines (and aircraft) can have different requirements and recommends in relation to carry on allowances:

Each carrier has its own requirements for carry-on luggage…If in doubt, it’s always a good idea to check with your airline before you depart.

This is sound advice and something I have always done when travelling. We also err on the side of caution and take smaller bags than the allowance affords. One bag the front pocket can extend past the limit if fully filled… not fully filling is an easy solution.

I’ve Never Checked a Bag in My 16 Years of Cruising — Shop My 15 Fool-proof Carry-on Essentials

From Mexico to the Mediterranean, I never leave port without these sure-fire items.

curio travel bag

Travel + Leisure / Francesca Fasciglione

Even as a longtime cruiser, one of my travel nightmares is meticulously planning outfits for a cruise — and spending the entire trip without my luggage. This can actually happen if your checked bag doesn’t arrive with you because options for delivering it to you are, well, slim. What sort of airline delivery service brings it to you on a sea day in the middle of the ocean, after all? Another logistical issue is that the ship’s only in port for a few hours and timing a luggage delivery to the closest airport would be impossible .

Long story short: Your bag could follow you from airport to airport for an entire week and you’ll never see it. Instead of spending your trip in the clothes you traveled in (or dropping serious cash on a new wardrobe), take my advice and condense your gear to a simple carry-on so you can ensure that your belongings are always with you.

Haven't mastered the art of carry-on-only packing yet?  Here are the 15 clothing and accessories I bring on every cruise, whether I’m going to Alaska, the Mediterranean in the shoulder season, the Caribbean, or Mexico during winter. Even better, each pick is available at Amazon and prices start at $14.

Havaianas Twist T-bar Sandals

Choose sandals with ankle straps because, trust me, you do not want to wear thong-style flip-flops for the many hours you’ll explore the ship on a sea day. I used to own a pair of these and wore them until the soles wore out. I am already shopping for my next pair. With the sand gray pair, you could wear it with a flowy, long dress for casual dinners.

Merrell Alverstone 2 Waterproof Hiking Shoes

However, for shore excursion hikes to natural wonders like Denali National Park or Virgin Islands National Park, you need a pair of comfortable athletic shoes that won’t get ruined if it rains — and you won't want to wear open-toe shoes on these activities as sandals make you more susceptible to ticks and bug bites. My Merrell hiking shoes are sturdy enough that I won’t twist an ankle. I wear these on the plane as they’re my bulkiest shoes, and they come in handy if I have to sprint to my gate on a tight layover.

Lucky Brand Wimmie Ballet Flats

On the topic of shoes, it took me a long time to find a pair of comfy black flats without thick rubber soles (skewing into casual, ugh). Heels take up more space in your luggage and stretchy ballet flats don’t provide arch support. So, what's a cruisegoer to do? I own a pair of these Lucky Brand flats and wear them with dressy slacks, skirts, and dresses for when I’ll be walking a great distance. I can’t wait to pack these for my next cruise.

Dokoto Elegant Casual Button-down Cover-up

If you’re just bringing a carry-on, I recommend packing only one cover-up — and choosing it wisely. Polyester and rayon materials are only going to cause you to sweat on the Lido Deck. Cotton is preferred as it’s a more breathable fabric. Make sure to opt for a cover-up that can also double as a dress, like this one that's available in 15 solid shades. With the longer length, it'll provide excellent coverage to protect you from the sun and keep you looking put together when you're headed to lunch.

Cupshe Ruffled One-piece Swimsuit

If you’re only packing one swimsuit, you can't go wrong with a one-piece. This way you can also swim with comfort, whether it’s laps at the pool or snorkeling in the ocean. At Amazon, this Cupshe bathing suit is super cute with supportive ruffled straps and flattering ruching. Its stylish design also allows it to double as a bodysuit under shorts, skirts, trousers, or jeans when you want to switch up your evening wear.

Automat Two-piece Matching Set

If you’re like me, sea days are for roaming the ship, and logging a lot of steps at that. Instead of yoga pants and a T-shirt, a two-piece lounge set keeps the comfy vacation vibe going strong without looking too sloppy. Plus, the shirt doubles as an extra layer in air-conditioned dining rooms or when you need extra sun protection at the pool.

Zaful V-neck Ribbed Button-up Cardigan

The day before I was to board a river cruise in Burgundy, France, I realized I’d need a sweater for a temperature drop over the next few days. I popped into an H&M on the Champs-Elysées in Paris and bought a chunky-knit, cropped beige cardigan. It’s a near twin to this one from Zaful, which is $36 right now at Amazon. I pack this on cruises as cabins can get chilly. A knee-length cardigan takes up way too much room in your luggage, unless you wear it on the plane.

Zomake Ultra Lightweight Hiking Backpack

When I plan to walk while in port, I pack a bright-orange packable backpack (one that condenses to a small size) that’s different than my personal-item backpack I wore on the flight. This one is very similar to the one I own. It's stocked with plenty of pockets to hold your essentials while you explore, and it’s water-resistant in case you spill a bottle of water inside or it’s raining outside.

Kalidi Beach Mesh Tote Bag

As cute as they are, unless you plan to bring a woven straw beach bag as your purse or carry-on for the flight, it’s better to use a canvas tote bag or foldable beach bag like this one for taking a book, sunblock, sunglasses, and other items to the Lido Deck. Luckily, it's cute and functional enough to double as a beach bag once you're bag home, and you can even get away with using it as a purse while you're cruising.

Tronjori High-waist Wide-Leg Palazzo Pants

It’s nice to have a pair of black. loose-fitting, wide-leg dress slacks to wear to dinner with a tucked-in blouse or cropped top. Without drawstrings or spandex, the pants no longer look like slouchy yoga pants or loungewear. Here, the expandable waistline helps if you swell due to the heat or are indulging at the buffet. Bonus: these are wrinkle-free and easily roll up in your carry-on (but they're comfy enough to wear on the flight if you need to).

Sueani Loose V-neck Bell-sleeve Blouse

Two or three dressy tops are enough for me to mix and match with my not-so-formal pants and skirts. Instead of deciding between my short-sleeved and long-sleeved options, I like to bring three-quarter-length sleeved tops to get the best of both worlds. This top, which comes in 31 solid hues, won over Amazon shoppers with its flattering fit and versatile look. Remember: it's always solid, not patterned when only bringing a carry-on. Trust me, they'll go a long way with the rest of your cruise wardrobe.

Lilbetter Short-sleeve V-neck Dress With Pockets

For cruises, I pack knee-length over floor-length dresses, even if they’re casual, as that extra fabric multiplied by however many dresses you bring takes up more packing room. This one — with its pockets, short sleeves, and V-neck — could easily segue from strolling in port to sitting down for dinner in a specialty restaurant on the ship. Navy blue would be a fun color to match the nautical surroundings, but it's also available in 29 other colors.

Bloggerlove Rain Jacket Hooded Trench Coat

You’re going to need a lightweight windbreaker for more than a rainstorm. The ship’s top deck can get windy at night, for example. Also, for excursions like viewing the Kenai Fjords in Seward, Alaska, it’s chilly while out on the water. Sadly, my beloved J.Crew windbreaker trench coat is now from several seasons ago, but I found one just like it on Amazon, with an elastic waist for a similar tailored look a hood, and lots of pockets. Plus, it's packable, so you don't have to wear it on the plane or worry about it hogging up space in your carry-on.

Back from Bali Women’s Sheer Shrug Cardigan

Air-conditioned dining rooms on cruise ships can get chilly, so it’s helpful to have a shrug or wrap that doesn’t bulk up your dressy outfit (or take away precious carry-on space). This lightweight cropped cardigan — particularly in the elegant beige hue — can adapt to formal and casual, while also matching with floral and neutral, dark-colored dresses.

Sungait Vintage Round Sunglasses

Don’t pack huge Jackie O-like sunglasses that require a case the size of a small lunchbox. Go for a slim, lightweight pair instead. These tortoise-shell frames would look good on anybody and are affordable enough that if you lose them while on a bumpy catamaran ride, you won’t be out a lot of money. What's more, they're polarized and block 100 percent of the sun's UVB and UVA rays.

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

<< Previous page

Pages:  379-406

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.

Keywords: Tuva, Early Iron Age, early Scythian period, Aldy-Bel culture, barrow, burial in the coffin, mummy, full genome sequencing, aDNA

F1 2024 insider's guide no. 09 – canada.

F1-2024-Insider-s-Guide-No.-09-Canada - GLOBE-TROTTER

Expect plenty of noise in Montreal this weekend for hometown hero Lance Stroll as he takes to the track at the C anadian Grand Prix alongside Aston Martin Aramco Formula One® Team team-mate Fernando Alonso . L ocated on an island in the middle of a river , Circuit Gilles Villeneuve is fast, furious, and named after Canada’s greatest F1 legend. Villeneuve won the very first Canadian Grand Prix held here in 1978 (previously hosted at other tracks) ensuring his name would go down in history. The most famous section of the track is at the final corner, the ‘Wall of Champions’, which earned its name after the 1999 Canadian Grand Prix weekend when it was the scene of crashes for Damon Hill, Jacques Villeneuve, and Michael Schumacher .

What makes Montreal such a cool city?

Montreal is supremely bike-friendly, with a classic itinerary that showcases  the sights and leads you directly to the F1 track. Begin by cycling through the historic Le Vieux Montreal, now more commonly known as Old Montreal. As you travel back in Parisian time, amble down the cobbled streets and gaze upon the stained glass windows of the Notre-Dame Basilica of Montreal , or visit the vibrant Bonsecours Market. Continue past the iconic Farine Five Roses sign atop the flour mill and past the Habitat 67 apartments, a symbol of brutalist architecture by Moshe Safdie. Cross the mighty St Lawrence River via Pont de la Concorde, admire the surging rapids that challenged the French, and arrive on Île Sainte-Hélène within Parc Jean-Drapeau, home to the motor racing spectacle.

How to find joy in the journey?

Canada’s famous trains can take you to Quebec City with its historic architecture, French flair and Heights of Abraham battlefield memorial. In the other direction is the vast expanse of the country. One change at Toronto brings you on to the iconic VIA Canadian train which trundles west for four days through the pastures of Alberta and then up and over the Rockies. You’ll want to get out and explore the wonder of Banff and Jasper and the mountains and maybe ski at Whistler. The final section descends down to cosmopolitan Vancouver where you can enjoy lakes, beaches, and great Chinese food.

What’s new in Montreal?

The MEM (Montréal en Histoires) is more than just a city museum. Its full name - Le Centre des Mémoires Montréalaises, better conveys its mission to chronicle this magnificent city through the stories of its inhabitants. It has recently undergone expansion and refurbishment. Visitors will also appreciate the newly equipped Hyatt Place Downtown, the chic Warwick Le Crystal boutique hotel with sleek interiors, and The Vogue, a luxurious addition from the Curio Collection. This new establishment is complemented by YamaResto, a restaurant offering Asian fusion cuisine.

Where should I go next?

You won’t regret the journey south to New York’s trendiest borough, Brooklyn. On sunny days, take a dip in the McCarren Pool or visit Brighton Beach and the playful seaside at Coney Island, complete with its Nathan’s Famous hot dog stand. Overnight stays at industrial-chic newcomers like The Wythe, one of New York’s hippest hotels boasting breathtaking Manhattan views, or the boutique The Penny are highly recommended. Near the Brooklyn Bridge Park, the Time Out Market offers superb brunch options, and the 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge features a rooftop pool and an eco-conscious ethos. Be sure to try the bagels in Greenpoint (and debate whether Montreal or NYC bagels reign supreme) and experience the underground parties in trendy Bushwick.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

curio travel bag

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

curio travel bag

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

curio travel bag

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

curio travel bag

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
