MR. VERNON BUCHANAN

You made our trip really special

Ms Catherine Stock

Picked up right on time (downtown Las Vegas) went to main terminal and the tour started from there, 1st stop was a chocolate factory with a couple samples, then on to the Mead Lake cruise which was beautiful and included a nice lunch, then on to the Hoover Dam which was also a lot of fun, started with a short video and then the tour. Then back to Vegas where downtown was the 1st drop off which I thought was great. (My last Gray Line trip (Grand Canyon) I was picked up 1st (downtown) and dropped off last which added about 3 extra hours to my trip which I didn't expect or appreciate.)

Best places to visit in arizona.

Arizona is home to incredible landscapes, lively cities, spooky ghost towns, world-class spas and warm weather year-round, making the state ideal for a getaway any time of year. But to help you decide which Arizona destinations to spend your vacation in, U.S. News considered factors like the number of attractions, the availability of accommodations and the opinions of everyday travelers to pick the best places to visit in Arizona. Vote for your favorite spot below to help determine next year's list.

Grand Canyon National Park

Canyon de chelly national monument, monument valley, glen canyon national recreation area, vermilion cliffs national monument, coconino national forest, lake powell, wupatki national monument, petrified forest national park, montezuma castle national monument, lake havasu.

cruises on lake mead

Undisputed as one of the best national parks in the U.S. , Grand Canyon National Park is Arizona's crowning achievement. Many travelers opt to visit the South Rim, which is home to Grand Canyon Village, scenic overlooks and several hiking trails, including popular routes like Bright Angel Trail and Rim Trail. For a less crowded alternative, try visiting the North Rim between mid-May and mid-October. And if you want a story for the ages, consider a mule ride to the bottom of the canyon or a whitewater rafting trip along the Colorado River.

In addition to breathtaking natural landscapes, Canyon de Chelly National Monument within the Navajo Nation is home to nearly 5,000 years of human history, making it one of the longest continuously inhabited destinations in North America. A thriving community of Navajo people still live and work here, surrounded by ancient Pueblo ruins, cliff dwellings and pictographs. While access to the interior of the canyon is limited to tours led by a Navajo guide (this includes excursions on foot, horseback and vehicle), auto-tours along the scenic North and South Rim Drives are self-guided.

Whether you're a fan of movies or jaw-dropping landscapes, chances are you'll love visiting Monument Valley. Many films have featured the red sandstone mesas and buttes found in Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park, which occupies land in both Arizona and Utah. Take the 17-mile-long Valley Drive from the visitor center to see some of the Arizona side's most popular sights, including the East and West Mitten buttes, Elephant Butte and John Ford's Point. The latter is named after the famous film director and features a Navajo store where you can buy jewelry and crafts.

cruises on lake mead

Spanning more than 1.25 million acres in Utah and Arizona, Glen Canyon National Recreation Area appeals to travelers who are looking to spend some quality time in nature. Spend the afternoon water skiing on Lake Powell, the second-largest human-made lake in the United States, or hike the short trail to Horseshoe Bend overlook, which offers a unique perspective of the Colorado River as it snakes through Glen Canyon in a horseshoe-shaped curve. While you're here, you can't miss a visit to nearby Antelope Canyon, a mesmerizing slot canyon within the Navajo Nation that can only be explored via guided tour.

cruises on lake mead

Outdoor enthusiasts flock to this central Arizona town to enjoy its stunning scenery. Regularly described as one of the most beautiful places in America, Sedona dazzles with its famous red rocks and hiking trails (found in Red Rock State Park), as well as its vortexes. These unique rock formations are said to emit a healing energy from the earth, and it's an experience you have to feel for yourself to believe. The town is also home to numerous spas with Sedona-inspired specialty treatments, which are bound to leave you feeling relaxed and rejuvenated.

cruises on lake mead

Vermilion Cliffs National Monument's gorgeous rock formations draw hikers from around the world. Can't-miss landmarks here include The Wave in Coyote Buttes North and White Pocket in the Paria Canyon. Keep in mind, though, that both areas require permits for hiking and camping. These permits – which are given to a limited number of people per day (depending on the region and type of visit) by Arizona's Bureau of Land Management – ensure travelers can enjoy the monument without rubbing elbows with hordes of tourists.

cruises on lake mead

This scenic town about 30 miles south of Sedona offers a wealth of attractions to suit every type of traveler. History buffs can spend their time browsing exhibits at Fort Verde State Historic Park and Verde Valley Archaeology Center and Museum, or exploring ancient cliff dwellings at Montezuma Castle National Monument. Meanwhile, daredevils can choose from a variety of thrilling activities, including zip lining, horseback riding and joining a safari tour at the Out of Africa Wildlife Park.

cruises on lake mead

Head to Coconino National Forest if you want to be surrounded by nature on your next Arizona getaway. This expansive forest is one of America's most diverse, with nearly 2 million acres of mountain-, lake- and creek-covered land. Hike to the top of the San Francisco Peaks (home to Arizona's tallest mountain, Humphreys Peak) to enjoy phenomenal panoramas, visit Fossil Creek to see one of the state's best waterfalls , or zip down Slide Rock State Park's rock slide for a refreshing dip in a swimming hole. The area is home to all kinds of wildlife, too, so keep an eye out for critters as you explore.

cruises on lake mead

Millions of people flock to this destination in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area every year to enjoy the ultimate lake vacation . Popular pursuits at Lake Powell – which features nearly 2,000 miles of winding shoreline– include boating, water skiing, tubing, paddleboarding and wakeboarding. The lake's abundance of game fish also draws anglers in droves. No visit would be complete without hiking around the towering red rock formations that line the lake's shores.

cruises on lake mead

Sitting less than 30 miles southwest of Sedona and roughly 110 miles north of Phoenix, this sleepy cliff side community in central Arizona makes for an excellent daytrip destination. Once dubbed "The Wickedest Town in the West," Jerome embraces its history as a former mining town, boasting must-see tourist attractions like the Jerome Historical Society Mine Museum and Jerome State Historic Park, which is home to the striking Douglas Mansion. Other activities include sipping on delicious vino at one of Jerome's wineries and learning about the town's haunted history on a ghost tour.

cruises on lake mead

Travel to this national monument in northern Arizona for a glimpse into the state's fascinating past. Once home to a thriving agricultural community, Wupatki was designated a national monument in 1924 as a way to preserve this outstanding archaeological site. Four walking trails are open to the public and lead to seven well-preserved pueblos, prehistoric villages that were occupied 900 years ago. Want to explore off-trail? Join one of the park's ranger-led hikes (offered October through April) for a deeper look into Wupatki National Monument's backcountry, which includes additional pueblo structures and petroglyphs.

cruises on lake mead

If you want to spend your next vacation outdoors, head to Petrified Forest National Park. In this more than 200,000-acre park, you'll discover one of the world's largest concentrations of petrified wood, plus rocky cliffs and animal fossils. To make the most of your time here, plan on incorporating several activities into your visit. Popular in-park pursuits include hiking, horseback riding and biking. Don't forget to also leave time for checking out some of the park's historical exhibits, such as those found at the Rainbow Forest Museum and the Painted Desert Inn National Historic Landmark.

cruises on lake mead

Nicknamed "The Town Too Tough to Die," this southeastern Arizona destination shows what life was like in the Wild West. On Allen Street, where many of the town's saloons, shops and restaurants are located, you can check out historical landmarks like The Bird Cage Theater and the O.K. Corral Historic Complex, as well as watch costumed actors reenact a famous 1881 gunfight. The town's original courthouse and an Old West graveyard are also still intact, providing you additional opportunities to learn more about Tombstone's earliest pioneers, lawmen and outlaws.

cruises on lake mead

Often compared to a high-rise apartment building, Montezuma Castle National Monument features a five-story, 20-room design that's built into the cliffs of central Arizona's Verde Valley. Although the pueblo structures were named after an Aztec emperor, the dwellings were built and formerly inhabited by the Sinagua Indian Tribe. Visitors can learn more about Sinagua culture at the monument's museum, located within the Montezuma Castle Visitor Center, before they trek the area's trails to Montezuma Castle and Montezuma Well. Remember, the monument does not permit entry into the dwellings due to their fragile state.

cruises on lake mead

Surrounded by multiple natural treasures, Flagstaff is more than just a stopover on a road trip to the Grand Canyon. To the north, you'll find the Arizona Snowbowl Ski Resort – which offers everything from ski slopes to hiking trails – nestled 9,500 feet high in the San Francisco Peaks. And to the east sit ancient dwellings at Walnut Canyon National Monument. You should also spend a day exploring the Historic Downtown and Railroad District. The area is located on what is known today as Route 66 and features 20th-century buildings that house numerous restaurants, art galleries and shops.

cruises on lake mead

Once a thriving mining town, Bisbee attracts travelers who want to get a taste of the town's past. You'll feel like you've stepped back in time as you stroll up and down Bisbee's streets during a walking tour. You can also learn more about the southern Arizona town's mining days as you explore the Copper Queen Mine and peruse the exhibits at the Bisbee Mining & Historical Museum. If you enjoy learning about the paranormal, sign up for an evening ghost tour of some of Bisbee's historical – and reportedly haunted – buildings.

cruises on lake mead

Prescott appeals to every type of traveler. Nature lovers can explore Prescott National Forest's 900-plus miles of trails on foot, by mountain bike or by horse before venturing to one of its lakes to go boating or fishing. For architecture buffs, there's Prescott's downtown district, which features all kinds of early American structures, including Victorian-era homes and former saloons. Meanwhile, culture hounds can check out several highly regarded museums, such as the Old West art-themed Phippen Museum and the Museum of Indigenous People.

cruises on lake mead

Visit Lake Havasu to enjoy a variety of activities on and by water. The lake is one of Arizona's premier destinations for boating, water skiing, fishing and swimming. Plus, it features hidden coves accessible by kayak and the eye-catching London Bridge, which was relocated here from London in 1971. After spending some time on the lake, head ashore to Lake Havasu City, where you'll find shops, restaurants, campgrounds and hiking trails, among other amenities.

cruises on lake mead

As the nation's fifth most-populated city, Arizona's capital is constantly buzzing with activity. Phoenix is lauded for its well-manicured golf courses, its world-class spas and its proximity to Camelback Mountain's hiking trails, but travelers can also visit unique attractions, such as the Musical Instrument Museum and the Desert Botanical Garden. What's more, Phoenix's diverse population gives it a dynamic restaurant scene for foodies to explore. Steakhouse fare and Mexican-inspired cuisine appear on many local restaurant menus, but to sample a bit of everything the area has to offer, sign up for a food tour of Phoenix and nearby Scottsdale.

cruises on lake mead

You'll find plenty of ways to stay busy at Lake Mead. The Lake Mead National Recreation Area, which extends across the Arizona-Nevada border, is the first and largest of its kind in America. Its 700 miles of shoreline and 9 trillion gallons of water make it a massive hub for water sports like boating, fishing and water skiing. Plus, Lake Mead is considered one of the world's best freshwater lakes for scuba diving thanks to its range of depths. Can't-miss dive sites on the Arizona side of the lake include the Gypsum Reefs and Kingman Wash.

Mystery Over Lake Mead Fire That Engulfed 26 Boats

An investigation has been launched after a fire at Lake Mead, Nevada, burned 26 boats.

Eleven boats were destroyed and two people injured in the blaze at the Las Vegas Boat Harbor, according to Boating Lake Mead.

Lake Mead is the largest reservoir in the U.S., and is a key water source, supplying water to Arizona, California, and Nevada, as well as parts of Mexico.

The fire broke out at around 12:30 am local time on Sunday.

"It was pretty devastating," harbor owner Gail Kaiser told Fox 5 Vegas.

People were evacuated from boats as the fire spread across the R and I wings of the dock, said Kaiser.

"It was horrific," said Kaiser, "we're looking down saying, 'There goes our business.'"

"It looked like the entire thing was on fire. In actuality, it was a small portion."

Kaiser and her daughter started evacuating people, some of whom were staying on their boats overnight.

"If it was a Tuesday night, maybe so many people wouldn't be here, but on a Saturday night, especially with the nice weather and the warm finally getting here, people were here using their boats, and they do spend the nights here."

Fire investigators deployed underwater cameras on Monday in an attempt to assess the damage and identify how the fire started. The cause of the fire currently remains a mystery.

Clark County Fire and the National Parks Service were contacted for comment.

According to Kaiser, one of the injured people was suffering burns and the other was a firefighter who refused treatment for smoke inhalation.

Kaiser is anxious to get back to the damaged wings and assess the damage. "We won't know until we can get out there and start our process," she said.

Most of the marina is open to the public, with the affected R and I wings taped off and monitored by National Parks Service rangers.

Management instructed customers with damaged boats to fill out the Nevada Department of Wildlife self-reporting form and submit to Boating Lake Mead.

Affected boat owners were also encouraged to contact their insurance companies to make a claim for damage.

At maximum capacity, Lake Mead is 112 miles long and contains 28.23 million acre-feet of water.

However the reservoir has remained below full capacity since 1986, with concerns of future water shortages .

Lake Mead is a popular area for boating, and Las Vegas Boat Harbor is one of four marinas located on Lake Mead. The other marinas are: Lake Mead Marina, Nevada, Callville Bay, Nevada and Temple Bar, Arizona.

Iconic speedboat breaks Lake Mead’s surface, but is it history or a hunk of junk?

LAS VEGAS ( KLAS ) — It disappeared about six months ago as Lake Mead was on a yearlong comeback, but now the tip of a speedboat that came to symbolize the water shortage has reappeared as summer heat sets in.

The “vertical speedboat” or “Lake Mead monolith” sticking out of the lake bottom at Government Wash poked above the surface about 10 days ago.

Expect it to be visible for the next two years, if you trust the “most probable” projections from the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation. The water level will drop during summer months, and then rebound late in the year. The tip of the boat will barely stick out of the water in January and February of 2025.

But we won’t see the full glory of the boat like in 2022 (video at the top of this story), when you could walk to the base as the shoreline receded. That’s another 19 feet below the current water level. Lake Mead is projected to drop just below 1,053 feet in July 2025, leaving 12-13 feet of the towering wreckage above the water. (See more about Lake Mead’s level below.)

And make no mistake — it’s a wrecked boat in the eyes of the National Park Service.

It’s not a monolith or a symbol. It’s not history. It’s not something to be preserved. Officials with Lake Mead National Recreation Area were clear as they discussed the problem last year during a community meeting.

“Essentially, abandoned or wrecked boats are a lot like abandoned or wrecked vehicles. They are an eye sore and take away from the natural beauty in a location,” according to John Haynes, public affairs officer.

He told 8 News Now in April that there are no specific plans for the boat in Government Wash at this time. Lake Mead’s April 25 community meeting touched on “trash vs. treasure,” but specifics about the speedboat weren’t addressed, Haynes said.

“They also represent discarded personal property, which is always discouraged. The business community has expressed support to help remove abandoned boats as they mischaracterize the beauty and abundance of Lake Mead’s water resources,” Haynes said.

The boat wasn’t just an Instagram moment. It became a political platform when someone spray-painted a message urging Gov. Joe Lombardo to support rent control. Someone went back and covered the message with white paint.

“People come to a national park or recreation area to enjoy the outdoors in its pristine, natural state,” Haynes said.

Monolith of Lake Mead: Photo tour of the famous vertical speedboat

“We strive to provide that visitor experience to the best of our ability at Lake Mead National Recreation Area. Piles of trash, derelict structures, and beach detritus – to include wrecked watercraft – detract from this experience. Our goal moving forward is to continue to clean up the park so we can provide a quality outdoor experience to visitors,” he said.

To that end, the park recruits volunteers and gets help from the business community.

For the iconic “monolith” wreckage, they’ll need a dry worksite to get it out of the lake bottom. Anyone who cares about the Las Vegas water supply is hoping that day never comes.

Lake Mead was at 1,065.71 feet as of noon today. That’s about 11 feet below this year’s peak at 1,076.66 feet. Lake levels are expressed as the altitude of the lake’s surface compared to sea level.

Officials expect the lake to drop to 1,060.19 in November, according to projections in Reclamation’s current 24-month study.

Will we find anything new on the shore when that 16½-foot drop is complete?

If it’s another boat, it’s up to the owner to salvage their vessel after an accident, Haynes said.

“By law, a boat owner is ultimately responsible for the salvage of their vessel after an accident. However, there are occasions that would prohibit the safe recovery of a boat, such as depth of water, condition of the boat after a fire, etc. In these circumstances the park superintendent may authorize the boat owner to not salvage the boat at their request,” he said.

“Typically, however, Rangers work with the boat owner insurance companies to ensure the salvage is done and the boat is not left behind. This is one reason why it’s important for owners to obtain vessel insurance,” Haynes said.

He acknowledged that there are some exceptions.

“Some wrecked boats or other submerged objects may be of historical interest. Those items would be evaluated in terms of historic significance in relation to the park and its history,” Haynes said.

“While non-historic boat wrecks may be an appealing point of interest to some visitors, they can also be an unattractive nuisance to others — or even pose a safety hazard to park visitors and wildlife,” he said.

Fire at Lake Mead burns 26 boats, sparks investigation

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) - 26 boats were damaged, 11 of them destroyed, and two people were injured in a fire at the Las Vegas Boat Harbor over the weekend, according to Boating Lake Mead.

“It was horrific because we’re looking down saying, ‘There goes our business.’ It looked like the entire thing was fire,” said harbor owner Gail Kaiser. “In actuality, it was a small portion, but it was scary.”

26 boats damaged, 2 injured in fire at Lake Mead marina

According to the National Park Service, the fire broke out at Las Vegas Boat Harbor Marina around 12:30 a.m. on Sunday.

“It’s pretty devastating,” said Kaiser.

Kaiser said people were evacuated from houseboats and cruisers as the flames quickly spread along the R and I wings of the dock.

“My daughter and I, we started evacuating people. Boulder City Police were already here, and we got with them, and they started evacuating people,” she said. “If it was a Tuesday night, maybe so many people wouldn’t be here, but on a Saturday night, especially with the nice weather and the warm finally getting here, people were here using their boats, and they do spend the nights here.”

On Monday, fire investigators deployed underwater cameras to assess the damage and debris below the surface, still trying to determine how the fire sparked.

Meanwhile, Kaiser and boat owners are anxiously waiting to see the damage for themselves, but they’re not allowed on the damaged wings until the fire investigation is complete.

“It leaves you with so much unknown because we’re anxious to get out there and get started cleaning up, getting to assess what’s there for us, what kind of structural damage there is, we don’t know, and we won’t know until we can get out there and start our process,” said Kaiser.

Most of the marina is still open to the public, except for the R and I wings of the dock, which are taped off and being monitored by park rangers.

Kaiser said two people had minor injuries from the fire – one was burned, while the other was a firefighter who refused treatment for smoke inhalation.

If your boat was damaged in the fire, Boating Lake Mead management says to fill out the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) self-reporting form . Then, submit the form to Boating Lake Mead here . They will forward all of the forms to the National Park Service (NPS) and NDOW for processing.

You should also call your insurance company and report the fire damage to start the claim process.

Cottonwood Cove Resort and Marina on Lake Mohave is worth the drive

One of the most memorable aspects of traveling is not the places visited, though that has a lot to do with the traveling, but the people you meet along the way.

I’ve been fortunate to meet famous folks, ordinary folks, and sometimes some unsavory folks along the byways. But all were wonderful in their own right.

Laureen, my lovely wife, and I decided recently to boat up to Cottonwood Cove Resort and Marina on Lake Mohave, approximately 35 miles north of Davis Dam on the Nevada side of the lake. We would leisurely cruise the blue waters of the Colorado River and spend the night at the Cottonwood Cove Motel along the shores of the marina.

A wonderful way to spend a weekend. Sun, fun, and burning through a whole lot of fuel which made my wallet feel a lot lighter when we docked at the marina gas station.

“I bet we’re still a buck cheaper than Katherine Landing,” a young man said while pumping fuel into the tank on our boat.

“Yes, you are,” I replied not feeling any more chipper as I handed him a hundred and received no change back.

“Did you bring snacks?” I asked Laureen. “I don’t think we can afford the cafe for dinner.”

The winds had picked up about halfway along the trip and the lake often looked like a churning clothes washer. But we were out in the fresh air, tunes blasting away on the pontoon, and getting splashed by cold lake water was just part of the adventure.

Even with some pretty rough water, we made Cottonwood Cover in a little less than two hours and decided to chug further north to Nelson’s Landing on the Nevada side of the lake.

And this is where we encountered two young men who were in desperate need of help.

I wrote about the tragedy that had taken place on September 14th, 1974 when a monsoon west of the landing created a sudden flood which led to a 40-foot wave of water roaring through Nelson’s Landing, killing nine people.

We had only seen the beach from the land and decided to take a gander at the site from the water\'s edge.

As we slowly pulled into the cove, which was packed with swimmers, Laureen noticed a young man frantically waving a white Frisbee at us.

I waved back.

“I believe he wants to talk to us,” Laureen said, with a slight shaking of her head in my direction.

Turns out two of their friends had paddled across the lake to the Arizona side, about a mile or more in distance, and had not returned. The choice of craft for the adventurers to cross some pretty rough water was a small inflatable raft with two short plastic paddles.

“It’s an orange raft and we lost sight of them,” the Frisbee-waving twenty-something yelled out to us from his perch on a high cliff.

A young woman beside him asked if we would mind going and looking for them. And off we went across the lake in search of a small orange raft.

Fast forward to the end. We did locate the two boys on the Arizona side - Gavin and Westin - hefted the raft and them aboard our boat and drove them back across the lake to their very relieved friends on shore.

“I think I underestimated the river,” Gavin stated.

“Lots of folks do,” I replied, while Laureen draped a towel over Westin’s shivering shoulders. It may have been early May and the sun beaming from above but the water temperature is still in the mid-60s, which is pretty chilly when a person has been hanging onto the side of a flimsy raft for hours.

We dropped the guys off and waved goodbye. Laureen laughed and asked if I had seen the t-shirt the girl had been wearing.

A white t-shirt with an arrow pointing to the left with the words, ‘I’m with stupid.’

“Probably should have made it plural,” I replied. Oh, the irony.

Actually, the two young men were just inexperienced. They were also very nice and appreciative. They wanted to know how they could repay us for saving them. Simple I advised, if they were ever out boating, return the favor and help someone else in need.

Good Karma is needed when on the water.

After doing our good deed for the day, we returned to Cottonwood Cove, tied off at a courtesy dock, and went to the store to see about a guest boat slip for the night.

And this is where we met a woman with an incredible sense of humor, by the name of Hope Full. “Yes, that’s my name.”

“Well, in that case, we are hopeful that a slip is available,” I replied.

“Never heard that one before,” Hope said, rolling her eyes just a bit. “Yes, Lisa called us this morning from Boulder Beach and reserved one for you.”

At this time, the manager came over and introduced himself. “I’m Mark Anthony, we exchanged emails about your trip here.”

Laureen turned her back to me. “Don’t say it.”

I smiled, “Is Cleopatra around?”

“Never heard that one before,” Mark said.

Mark is the manager at the resort and we did share some emails about Laureen’s and my plans for the weekend. He was awesome, as well as the entire team at Cottonwood Cove - helping us with anything we needed.

But this was not just a mini-vacation destination, there is a truly interesting history of this place.

Once long ago there, was a rather large island in the middle of the Colorado River named Cottonwood Island. This was before dams were built on the Colorado, forming Lake Mead, Lake Mohave, and Lake Havasu when steamboats navigated the wide river for nearly 500 miles.

According to the-wandering.com, the island measured nearly ten miles long and three miles wide with a huge concentration of cottonwood trees. The river flowed around the island making access to it rather easy from either shore - Nevada or Arizona.

The Mohave people used the island for agriculture. Then mining began in the 1860s, and the cottonwood trees were felled to sell to the steamboats for fuel making their way to the local mining areas, bringing supplies and retrieving the ore for the smelters down south.

In 1867, the military placed a small outpost on the island to raise cattle, but in the same year, a flood wiped the camp out and drowned all the cattle. That experiment was not tried again, though miners would still graze their cattle from time to time on the island.

Eventually, with the construction of Davis Dam and the creation of Lake Mohave in 1951, the island disappeared for good under the blue waters. Nothing can be seen of this once popular and historic land mass.

We wandered a bit before our motel room was ready and saw families with and without boats enjoying the warm afternoon weather while taking dips in the cool waters along the two swimming areas near the marina.

This resort within the Lake Mead National Recreation Area has something for everyone - though I still get confused with the name of the place, since we were on Lake Mohave. A large campground is available for those coming east from Searchlight, a cafe, general store, motel, houseboat rentals for long and short term, hiking trails galore and so much more.

Cottonwood Cove was part of the Mission 66 project which was started by the National Park Service in 1955 as a way to enhance visitors\' outdoor experience and originally followed Route 66 when more and more people hit the roads in their own jalopies.

After checking into our room, we opted for an early dinner at the cafe, and as I sat looking out across the sandy beach, the softly blowing tall palm trees, the sparkling blue waters I knew what I was going to order.

“What are you having?” Laureen asked.

“No choice but to follow Jimmy Buffet’s advice,” I said. “A cheeseburger in paradise.”
