San Diego's cruise terminal, situated near downtown, combines stunning waterfront views with easy access to the city's attractions. Discover the vibrant Gaslamp Quarter, explore Balboa Park, and soak up the sun on the beautiful beaches before embarking on your cruise.

The Port of San Diego (also known locally as the Port of Land and See) has two cruise terminals in downtown San Diego, along the Embarcadero waterfront district.

Most cruise ships dock at B-Street Pier & Cruise Ship Terminal is located at 1140 North Harbor Drive.

The 2nd Terminal, Port Pavilion at Broadway Pier, which acts as an overflow terminal is located at 1000 North Harbor Drive.

Both cruise terminals are close to hotels , restaurants and shopping along the two mile stretch known as San Diego Bay’s Embarcadero.

The newer, architecturally stunning, Port Pavillion acts as a flexible event space and has public access to the waterfront, a visitor’s center, and restaurant.  The airport is located 10 minutes away from the cruise piers, and the main train station, only 2 blocks. There is also a waterfront shuttle which operates during the summer, providing rides all day for one low price.

Weather in San Diego

March to May and September to November are the best times to visit San Diego. It can get rainy during the winter, but the lower rates on hotel accommodations make it a great time to visit. In any case, the weather is almost always sunny throughout the year, which makes almost any time a good time to come to San Diego.

SAN DIEGO CRUISE TERMINAL

There are two terminals at the Port of San Diego, both of which are located on the Embarcadero which is a two-mile stretch of downtown waterfront that offers dining, shopping, accommodations, and attractions – all with a great view.

Most cruise ships dock at the larger terminal – the B Street Pier & Cruise Ship Terminal. The other terminal is called Port Pavillion and it handles special events and public waterfront access in addition to the cruise ships that dock there.

The area next to the cruise terminal is for loading and unloading only so you should be prepared to unload/load quickly to allow others to do the same.

MONEY MATTERS

The currency of the United States is the US Dollar (USD) which is divided into 100 cents. It is printed on paper bills in the following denominations: $1, $2 (uncommon), $5, $10, $20, $50, and $100. It also includes the following coins: 1¢ (penny), 5¢ (nickel), 10¢ (dime), and 25¢ (quarter). There are 50¢ pieces and dollar coins but they aren’t common.

Although it’s not mandatory, tipping is customary in the United States and some service industries will expect a tip for a job well done. Visitors from outside the country may also be surprised at how much is tipped as it can be quite a bit more than in, for example, European countries.

RESTAURANTS:   It is customary to offer your waiter or waitress a tip between 15-20% depending on the level of service they provided. Usually, you will find the service is very attentive (refilling your drinking, checking on your party etc.) but if the service isn’t great you can leave a smaller tip or even no tip. Typically service that doesn’t warrant a tip does warrant speaking with a manager to voice your dissatisfaction. If you are dining with a large group (usually 8 or more) the restaurant may add an 18% service charge to your bill automatically so check for this before you add your tip. This is usually indicated at the bottom of a menu if the restaurant does this, or it will be indicated on your bill.

BARS : A tip of 10-15% is appropriate at a bar. In some places, you’ll find a “tip jar” on the bar and others you can give the tip to your server directly.

TAXIS:   A tip of 10-15% of your fare is customary, especially if your driver helps you with your luggage.

Paying with a credit or debit card is very common and in most restaurants, bars, and even taxis,  you’ll be able to add a tip to the total on the machine when you settle the bill if you don’t have cash. This is so common that many credit card machines now even have buttons with 15% / 18% / 20% on them so it will calculate the tip for you if you choose that option. You are always given the option to select the amount you’d like to tip, or you can opt not to put the tip on your card and give a cash tip instead.

BANKS & ATMS

Finding an ATM (Automated Teller Machine) will not be too difficult in San Diego.   We’ve pinned several ATMs that are near the terminals to the map below.

Generally, in the US, you will find ATMs at banks (some may have drive-thru ATMs), in grocery stores, gas stations, and in pharmacies (of which two common ones are  CVS  and  Walgreens ).

GETTING AROUND SAN DIEGO

San Diego is a very easy city to get around as there are so many options available to you. If you are flying in you’ll only be three miles from the cruise terminals so you can easily   catch a taxi   into the downtown area. For those arriving by train, the Santa Fe Depot is within walking distance of the terminals.

Once in the city options abound such as:

  • Old Town Trolley   – This is a great way to visit the main tourist areas of the city with stops at Old Town, Seaport Village (near the cruise terminals), Gaslamp Quarter, Coronado, Little Italy, and Balboa Park. You can either ride the full two-hour narrated historic tour at one time or hop on and off at different stops throughout the day. We used this trolley service on our visit to the city and would recommend it.
  • Big Bay Shuttle   – This operates between Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends and includes eight stops along San Diego’s bayfront from Harbor Island to the South Embarcadero near the convention centre.
  • Pedicabs and Carriages- These are popular ways to travel along the downtown waterfront area and into the Gaslamp Quarter.
  • Coronado Ferry   – Runs across San Diego Bay between the Broadway Pier, the Convention Center, and the Coronado Ferry landing. This would be a good idea for a quick view of the downtown skyline and Coronado Bridge if you don’t have time to take one of the harbour cruises.
  • GoCar   – This is a GPS-guided storytelling car.
  • Pedego Electric Bike – Located along the bay you can rent a bike and enjoy the fresh air. It is worth taking a quick look at   Groupon   if you are interested in this option as they have deals up to 50% at different times.

SAN DIEGO WEATHER

In general, you’ll find the summers are short, warm, and arid while the winters are long, cool and partly cloudy. The best times to visit San Diego for warm-weather outdoor activities is from early June to mid-October.

The hottest part of the year is from mid-July to early October with an average daily high temperature of 75°F (24°C). The cooler part of the year is from the end of November to the beginning of April with average daily high temperatures below 67°F (19°C).

SAN DIEGO VISITOR’S CENTER

PHONE:   1-619-737-2999

FESTIVALS & EVENTS

San Diego is a year-round vacation destination offering a large array of annual events. They have a range of colourful street festivals, parades, concerts, sporting events, and speciality fairs.

Some of the big events of the year include:

San Diego Restaurant Week   (January & September)   – More than 180 restaurants participate in a celebration of local dining.

Coronado Flower Show   (April)   – The nation’s largest flower show with flower exhibits, and live entertainment.

Comic-Con International   (July)   – The largest comics and pop culture event in the United States attracts thousands of artists, celebrities and fans of comic books, movie memorabilia, and all things pop culture.

MSAS Miramar Air Show   (September)   – A world-class air show featuring the best military and civilian pilots in the world, including the U.S. Navy’s famous Blue Angels.

San Diego Bay Parade of Lights   (December)   – Hundreds of boats are decorated for a spectacular holiday boat parade of lights in the bay.

This list of events is just the tip of the iceberg for San Diego and we’d highly recommend you click on the Calendar of Events link to see what events will be on when you’re in town for your cruise.

While you’ll have plenty to eat aboard your cruise, you shouldn’t give up the chance to try some of the great things San Diego has to offer.

Being on the coast, fresh seafood is a given and there are several places to enjoy it if you’re a seafood lover. Also with its close proximity to Mexico, you’ll be able to find tons of places to indulge in some authentic Mexican fare.

A few dining suggestions are:

Rooftop Restaurants   – With the weather in San Diego being near perfect just about all the time why not dine al fresco and get great views of the city too? This link will take you to 7 recommendations for rooftop restaurants from   SanDiego.org .

Must-Try Mexican Restaurants   – Local experts were asked to choose places that represent the city’s dedication to authentic Mexican fare and these are the seven they selected.

Kansas City Barbeque   – Our personal recommendation, especially for those that are fans of the movie   Top Gun,   is to pop in here for some lunch. This restaurant was where they   filmed the scenes   of Maverick and Goose playing the piano and singing “ Great Balls of Fire ” with the ladies. The original restaurant was destroyed by fire in 2008 but it’s been rebuilt and still retains that look from the film.

Remember to save some money for shopping in your ports of call, but if you want to do a little shopping pre-cruise (maybe find something new to wear to dinner onboard?) then San Diego has got you covered. You’ll find all the popular retailers here but for some unique shops you can try the following:

Gaslamp Quarter   – This area has many trendy boutiques lining the streets or you can visit the multi-level outdoor mall, Horton Plaza.

Little Italy   – On Fir Street, you’ll find colourful cottage boutiques with stylish options for women’s clothing, accessories, shoes, and home decor.

Fiesta de Reyes/ Bazaar del Mundo   – Located in the Old Town State Historic Park, this area is a popular destination for food, folklore, and traditional shops that capture the essence of San Diego’s history and culture.

Seaport Village   – Enjoy the sea breezes in this waterfront shopping, dining, and entertainment complex along San Diego Bay. There are four miles of meandering cobblestone pathways, ponds, fountains, and lush landscaping with more than 50 shops, restaurants, and sidewalk cafés tucked away.

Sharing is caring!

San Diego Cruise Port is a fabulous place to start your cruise. The port of San Diego has expanded in recent years and now offers a great choice of cruises from a number of different cruise lines.

Here we explore your different options for San Diego cruise port hotels and parking.

San Diego Cruise Terminal Overview

San Diego Cruise port is growing rapidly.

sandiegocruisetips

There is a great choice of cruises out of San Diego from a growing list of cruise lines.

How to Get to the Cruise Port of San Diego

I have sailed many times from the San Diego Cruise Terminal and one of the main things that I liked about it is its easily accessible by air, car, and even train.

You can read about my Disney Cruise From San Diego.

Whilst San Pedro and Long Beach in Los Angeles offer even more options for cruises, San Diego is much more easily accessible, in addition to being a wonderful place to stay if you want to add a night or two before or after your cruise.

San Diego Cruise Port terminal is located close to the heart of the downtown area on the beautiful San Diego Bay.

The San Diego Cruise port address is B Street Pier 1140 N Harbor Drive, San Diego, CA 92101.

The port is only 2.4 miles away from the San Diego Airport.

It’s too far to walk to the Port from here, particularly if you have luggage.

However, the car ride will only take about 10 minutes from San Diego Airport to the Cruise Port.

There are a number of options for shuttles from the cruise port.

However, we think that if you are arriving at the airport and just want to get to the port, a ride-sharing service is a much better idea.

An Uber will only cost around $10 to $12.

Lyft will be slightly less at around $8.

The most expensive option from the Airport to the Port will be a taxi which will cost in the region of $20.

There is public transport from the airport to the cruise port. This is just $2.25 per person each way.

The bus you need is the 992 which runs from the airport to downtown via the cruise port.

Arriving by train is another option.

The Amtrak Train Station is just a few blocks from the cruise port. You can easily walk unless you have a lot of luggage.

San Diego Cruise Port Hotels

Where is there to stay in San Diego that is convenient to the cruise terminal?

As you would expect, there are many fabulous hotels in San Diego.

As the cruise port is right in the heart of San Diego downtown you have a lot of hotel options that are very close to the start of your cruise.

However, there are only a handful of hotels that have cruise and park packages.

If you are arriving by plane or train there are many great options that are suitable for a range of budgets. Bringing your own car and needing cruise parking complicates this a bit.

You can either choose one of the few hotels which offer a San Diego cruise port park and stay package.

Or you can stay in a different hotel and use an independent car parking option.

This will most likely be more expensive than a San Diego cruise and stay package. However, it will give you more options.

Here we have split up the choices of hotels with cruise parking packages and those without.

Then we will also explore parking-only options so you can work out what the best solution is for you and your family.

San Diego Cruise and Stay Hotels

There is a limited selection of hotels in San Diego that offers a cruise and stay parking package.

Here are the best options for you.

Wyndham San Diego Bayside

Wyndham San Diego Bayside

If you want a hotel close to the cruise port you really can’t get any closer than the Wyndham San Diego Bayside. It is right across the street from the B Street Pier.

Not only does the close proximity to the port mean you have just a short walk in the morning to your cruise. It also means you will be able to wake up and look out the window and see your cruise ship right there!

This is an older hotel, but it has been recently renovated.

Rooms are a decent size and have either a King or two Doubles. The hotel does not have its own restaurant. However. there are plenty of restaurants within walking distance.

Note that if you do not opt for a cruise parking package, the standard rate is $39 per night.

This is pretty standard for the location, However, you really don’t want to find that out when you arrive.

If you are going to park at the Wyndham and then go on a cruise, definitely get the cruise parking package.

cruise ship dock san diego

Comfort Inn San Diego At The Harbor

cruise ship dock san diego

The Comfort Inn San Diego At The Harbor is another great option if you are taking a cruise out of San Diego. It is further out from the port than the Wyndham but often offers lower pricing so is worth considering.

The Comfort Inn is around 4 miles from the port. The hotel offers a free shuttle to the cruise port.

It is a motel-style hotel with outside corridors. The rooms offer either one king bed or one Double. There is a decent breakfast which is included in your room rate.

If you are looking for a clean motel for a one-night stay before your cruise this is a good option. The rates usually can’t be beaten, particularly if you are bringing a car and want to park whilst on the cruise.

cruise ship dock san diego

Hilton San Diego Airport

The Hilton San Diego Airport is a great option if you want a high-quality hotel with a cruise and park option. This highly-rated hotel is close to the airport so is a particularly good choice if you are flying in the day before your cruise.

The Hilton San Diego Airport offers a free shuttle to the cruise port. It is only 3 miles from the San Diego cruise port so it’s a convenient location.

The hotel offers great views of the City and San Diego Bay. You can choose from a King room or one with two Queens. Rooms even have a balcony so you can enjoy the fabulous views. Prices are from $205 per night.

San Diego Hotels

Here is a selection of some of the best hotels in San Diego. They do not specifically advertise a cruise and park package. If you book these hotels and are bringing a car you out likely will want to check out the parking-only options as well.

Some of the hotels in San Diego can charge as much as $50 per night for parking. So always make sure you book parking separately if you want the best deal but a hotel that doesn’t offer cruise and stay parking.

Springhill Suites San Diego Downtown/Bayfront

This newly built hotel is incredibly convenient for the San Diego Cruise Port and all the other attractions that this city has to offer.

The very comfortable Springhill Suites San Diego Downtown and located just across the street from the cruise port.

The rooms are modern and many have views over the port. You will be able to see your Disney Cruise ship arrive from your window in the morning!

Breakfast is included.

Embassy Suites Hotel San Diego Bay

cruise ship dock san diego

Embassy Suites is always one of my favorite picks. And I have stayed in this one recently and it impressed me very much.

What really impressed me about this particular San Diego Embassy Suites is that the staff were exceptional. I definitely have this hotel on the top of my list when I am sailing out of San Diego or just want to spend a night or two in the City.

They are consistent of a high standard and are a great option for families as you can accommodate more than 4 people in a room comfortably.

The breakfasts are always good and are included in the room rate.

All rooms are described as suites. What this means is that you will have two rooms. One with either a King or two Doubles.

The other room has a sofa bed, television, refrigerator, and microwave.

You can’t cook a gourmet meal but you can prepare something for your family to save a bunch on a restaurant meal if you want to.

Embassy Suites also offers a great complimentary breakfast.

We have stayed at many Embassy Suites and have always found this to be of really good quality with a decent selection of both cooked and cold breakfast food options.

Embassy Suites San Diego also offers an Evening Reception with hot and cold food items and beverages including beer and wine. If you have a family these included food options can save you a lot of money.

The Westin San Diego

The Westin San Diego

The Westin has an amazing downtown location which is also just a short ride to the cruise port.

If you are looking for all the high-standard features that a Westin offers, you will be sure to enjoy staying at this imposing San Diego Bay hotel.

You are within easy walking distance of Little Italy and the Gaslamp Quarter. The views of the San Diego Bay from the Westin are stunning.

Make sure to factor in the resort fee and valet parking fee.

The Westin does not have a cruise and park package option. It doesn’t have any special packages for San Diego cruise passengers. However, it is a fabulous hotel that is very convenient for seeing all the sights of San Diego.

San Diego Cruise Parking

If you do not need a hotel for your cruise but are bringing your car, there are a number of San Diego Cruise Parking options.

San Diego Cruise Port is rather unusual because it does not have a dedicated parking lot. Therefore you have to do a bit of research to find out what the best parking options are when you sail on a cruise out of San Diego.

sandiegocruiseport

Many of the parking options are advertised as airport parking. The Cruise Port and the Airport are not too far away from each other. Some options have a shuttle to the cruise port, but not all do.

So be careful to factor this in if you are booking one which is not within walking distance, as most aren’t.

Wally Park is located approximately a 10-minute shuttle ride from the port.

cruise ship dock san diego

Aladdin Parking is bookable through Park Sleep Fly and is close to both the airport and cruise port. This is a more pricey option at $16 per day. However, this is for covered car parking.

This is very reasonably priced and located right opposite the San Diego Cruise Port. However, this gets booked up really quickly, so make sure you check this one out far in advance.

Cruises Out Of San Diego

San Diego cruise port is mostly used by Holland American and Disney cruise lines.

Celebrity and Royal Caribbean Cruise lines also have some ships sailing out of San Diego. These are usually repositioning cruises that sail through the Panama Canal.

Mexican Tall Ship arrives in San Diego, here's how to see it for free this weekend

A Mexican Navy ship  sailed into San Diego with hundreds of crew and sailor personnel as part of the 2024 Tricontinental Training Cruise.

The vessel, known as The ARM School Tall Ship Cuauhtémoc, is visiting San Diego from May 16 through May 17 and is offering public tours  free of charge.

  • May 16: Open until 5 p.m.
  • May 17- May 20-: Open from 10:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m.
  • The Naval ship is docked at the B Street Pier next to the cruise terminal at the Port of San Diego.

The navy ship arrived Thursday morning and was welcomed to San Diego by the Consulate General of Mexico in San Diego along with naval, civil and diplomatic authorities.

A mariachi band and students from St. Rose of Lima Elementary waiving Mexican flags welcomed the vessel and its crew to San Diego.

The ship has navigated oceans and seas around the world for more than four decades. For over 41 years, the tall ship has navigated the oceans and seas around the world, training more than 41 generations of officers.

Mexican officials said the ship, “has carried a message of peace and goodwill, having visited more than 228 ports in 73 countries in its history. She encouraged the sailors to carry Mexico in their hearts and wished them “calm seas” during the 222 days of their journey through three continents.”

After it visits San Diego, the vessel will set sail on May 21 toward Honolulu and continue its nautical journey to 13 ports from 10 countries, including Japan, South Korea, China, Australia, and Tahiti, officials said.

Port of San Diego Renews Emergency Declaration to Eradicate Invasive Seaweed in South San Diego Bay

Contact: [email protected], 619.348.1518, [email protected]

More Caulerpa Patches Discovered

The algae is bright green and consists of a number of blades linked by underground runners (stolons), which attach to the substrate with small root-like structures (rhizoids).

The Port of San Diego is continuing its local emergency declaration in the fight against the spread of an invasive algae scientifically known as Caulerpa prolifera in San Diego Bay. Since its discovery in September 2023, additional Caulerpa patches have been found within and adjacent to the Coronado Cays.

Caulerpa prolifera is a type of tropical algae that grows and reproduces extremely quickly, choking out native seaweeds and seagrasses, potentially harming marine life through loss of habitat. In San Diego Bay, the primary concerns are to protect eelgrass and the fish, birds and green sea turtles that rely on eelgrass for food and shelter. San Diego Bay has nearly 2,600 acres of eelgrass, 1,900 of which are in the south bay. In addition to providing critical shelter and food for the bay’s wildlife, eelgrass is also a natural water filter and sequesters carbon, which are important for good water and air quality.

“It is absolutely critical that we find and remove or cover every little piece of Caulerpa as quickly as possible to preserve our bay’s strong and healthy ecosystem,” said Chairman Frank Urtasun, Port of San Diego Board of Port Commissioners. “Caulerpa is also a potential threat to local jobs and businesses. In the 1980s, a Caulerpa outbreak in the Mediterranean Sea caused millions of dollars in losses to tourism and fishing industries because it was not contained. We will not let that happen in San Diego Bay. With our many local, state, and federal partners, we are being swift and prudent to protect both our environment and our economic interests.”

Patches of green Caulerpa prolifera among eelgrass in San Diego Bay

In late September, divers found a small patch of Caulerpa prolifera in the Coronado Cays while conducting an in-water pre-construction eelgrass/Caulerpa dive survey as a permit condition for a dock replacement project. In follow-up dive surveys, additional patches were found in the Cays. Then, in mid-April, divers found small Caulerpa patches in the San Diego Bay National Wildlife Refuge outside of and adjacent to the Cays. To date, nearly 11,200 square feet of the seaweed have been discovered. Trained divers have covered all the patches with a sealed barrier to kill the algae by blocking it from light, oxygen, and tidal circulation.

The most likely source of this infestation is the release from a saltwater aquarium into the bay as Caulerpa is a popular and common saltwater aquarium plant. Because of the environmental risks, it is illegal in California to possess, sell, or transport any Caulerpa seaweed (AB 655, 2023). Fines can range from $500 to $10,000 for each violation.

If you have or sell saltwater aquariums:

  • DO NOT use Caulerpa in your aquarium.
  • DO NOT dump your aquariums into California waters or even pour the contents into streets or down storm drains that often discharge to the bay or ocean. ONLY drain aquariums into sinks or toilets as the water will circulate to a treatment plant that would help minimize the threat.
  • DO NOT share or sell Caulerpa.

Caulerpa can rapidly and aggressively expand from contact with vessels, fishing, and even tidal exchanges. To prevent unintentional spread of this invasive species, boaters, kayakers, swimmers, and divers are asked to avoid the infested areas, if possible, or to gently transit at high tide. Caulerpa is not harmful to humans who come into contact with it.

If you are a boater, diver, or angler:

  • Learn what Caulerpa looks like and keep an eye out for it.
  • Inspect your anchor, fishing gear, or nets for Caulerpa that may have been picked up from the bottom.
  • Learn more and report sightings to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife at wildlife.ca.gov/Conservation/Invasives/Species/Caulerpa .

To date, just over $900,000 has been committed to cover the costs of diver surveys and eradication, including $92,000 contributed by the Port and $350,000 in Bipartisan Infrastructure Law funding secured by the Port and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. An additional $2.2 million in funding is pending from federal and state sources, along with up to $500,000 included in the Port’s preliminary FY 2025 Budget. The Port’s continued emergency declaration will be helpful in securing additional grant funding as the Port and its partners continue surveillance, control measures, and monitoring.

This is the first discovery of Caulerpa prolifera in San Diego Bay. An infestation in Newport Bay has been battled since 2021. Another species of Caulerpa infested part of Huntington Harbour and Aqua Hedionda Lagoon in Carlsbad in the early 2000s. In California, there has been routine monitoring of Caulerpa since the early 2000s.

Since the initial discovery, the Port has been working diligently with the Southern California Caulerpa Action Team (SCCAT) consisting of state and federal resource agencies to develop and implement an immediate response plan to prevent the spread and further infestation of this algae.

The SCCAT has prepared a Rapid Response Eradication Plan to address the immediate need to eradicate this invasive species. This plan includes the following components:

  • Control of Infestation Site – To prevent disturbance by boat anchors and boat wakes, the affected areas are being controlled through coordination with the Coronado Cays Homeowners Association and slip occupants.
  • Localized Eradication Level Survey – Diver surveys are being conducted within and adjacent to the affected area. Divers locate, record, and map any Caulerpa prolifera found.
  • Treatment – The Caulerpa prolifera is being covered by trained divers with a sealed barrier that will kill the algae by blocking it from light, oxygen, and circulation. This method has been successfully used in the past at other Caulerpa infestation sites in other areas of Southern California.
  • Post Treatment Surveys – Diver surveys will be conducted both immediately following treatment and over a longer timeframe to help ensure the species is completely eradicated and does not repopulate the area.
  • Broad Area Surveys – Diver surveys will occur in surrounding areas of San Diego Bay to determine if other areas have been invaded.

The SCCAT includes representatives from federal and state resource agencies including the Army Corps of Engineers, the California Coastal Commission, California Department of Fish and Wildlife, National Marine Fisheries Service, Santa Ana and San Diego Regional Water Quality Control Boards, State Lands Commission, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and U.S. Navy.

Mexico’s only tall ship makes port in San Diego

The ARM Cuauhtémoc Sail Training Ship is now dockside at the B Street Pier and open for tours. The tall ship is a period-correct replica built in 1982 for the Mexican Navy.

Since its commissioning, the ship has visited 228 ports in 73 countries, helping to train Mexican sailors and sharing the goodwill of the Mexican people.

Named for the last Aztec emperor, Cuauhtémoc, the ship and its crew of 261 made its first stop in San Diego while on a tricontinental training cruise.

Captain Victor Molino Pérez says his ship represents more than the Mexican navy.

“This vessel is not only representative of our institution, the Mexican Navy, but of an entire Mexican people,” Molino said in Spanish.

The Mexican Consul General in San Diego, Alicia Kerber Palma, said the ship’s mission is one in contrast to what is too often at the forefront of our turbulent world.

“You can see many conflicts all around the world. Having this boat giving the message of good faith of peace of collaboration is very important, and Mexico is a country that always talked in favor of peace,” she said.

But this is more than a diplomatic mission for some of those dockside. It’s a kind of homecoming. San Diegan Silvestre Garcia hasn’t seen his brother, Rafiel, who is part of the ship's crew, for more than 20 years.

“I want to hug him. Too much time without seeing him. My heart is pounding,” Garcia said.

After more than 20 years, the brothers hugged dockside, together again for a few days despite borders, countries and conflicts. Before the Cuauhtémoc hoists sale and makes way for her next port.

Frequently Asked Questions

Full itineraries for world cruises typically last anywhere from around 100 to 180 days, though Royal Caribbean International 's Serenade of the Seas is currently sailing the longest world cruise at 274 days. If you're not able to set sail for three to five months (or longer), some cruise lines also offer select, shorter segments of their full world cruise itineraries or grand voyages, which are typically two to three months in length.

World cruise fares can vary significantly between cruise lines. Some lines advertise cruise-only fares, which do not include meals at specialty restaurants, alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages, excursions, some entertainment, or other expenses. On top of that, many cruise lines' base prices exclude port fees and taxes. Given the length of a world cruise, even small expenses can add up after several months on the ship and in ports around the globe. Typically, travelers can expect to spend a base fare of about $15,000 for an inside cabin and as much as $90,000 (or more) for luxury accommodations and an all-inclusive fare.

If you're considering sailing beyond 2025, Regent Seven Seas Cruises recently announced its 140-night 2027 world cruise, World of Splendor, sailing from Miami to New York. The voyage embarks on Jan. 11, 2027, aboard Seven Seas Splendor , and prices start at $91,499 per person. If you want to reserve the over-the-top Regent Suite, you'll need to budget an unheard-of $1.7 million for two guests ($839,999 per person, to be exact).

Regent Seven Seas' all-inclusive fares include almost everything you could need, including door-to-door luggage service, first and business class airfare, pre-cruise gala events, exclusive shoreside experiences, unlimited dry cleaning and laundry, prepaid gratuities, meals, open bars and lounges, unlimited Wi-Fi access, and more. Silversea also offers door-to-door pricing that includes private executive transfers, international business class flights, pre- and post-cruise hotels and transfers, baggage valet, all meals and beverages, butler service, bespoke special events, and other amenities.

Depending on the cruise line, you may receive many additional perks when booking a full world cruise, including shore excursions. All-inclusive luxury lines like Silversea and Regent Seven Seas offer a list of complimentary shore excursions in every port. In addition, Silversea hosts a bon voyage reception, a private dinner and an overnight hotel stay for world cruise guests. It also features exclusive world cruise cultural events in ports around the globe. If you're sailing with Regent Seven Seas, you'll also have pre-cruise gala events and exclusive shoreside experiences throughout the cruise.

Special inclusions, upgrades and other amenities are available with other lines that are not all-inclusive. For example, guests on boutique cruise line Azamara's 2025 world cruise will receive $25,000 in benefits, including $3,000 for shore excursions, 13 exclusive events and much more. Oceania's " simply MORE" offer includes $8,200 in shore excursion credit, as well as many other amenities.

If you're sailing with a larger cruise line, it's also possible to find deals that may include shore excursions or onboard credit you can use for booking tours. Holland America Line offers guests an early booking bonus that includes a list of additional perks, including one complimentary shore excursion, $2,000 per person in onboard credit ($4,000 for solo travelers) and more. MSC Cruises includes 15 free shore excursions and other perks when you book its world cruise.

You may want to consult with a travel agent specializing in cruises to see what additional perks they can offer if you book your world cruise through their agency.

Royal Caribbean International's 274-night Ultimate World Cruise, which set sail in December 2023, will visit all seven continents before guests disembark in September 2024.

Holland America Line's 132-day Grand World Voyage cruise aboard Volendam in 2026 will also visit seven continents, circumnavigating the globe. The epic journey will include a four-day Antarctic experience.
