Initially, there was only one reported minor injury of a Carnival Glory guest that occurred when a group was being evacuated from the dining room of one ship's decks 3 and 4. But the cruise line said that since its preliminary evaluation, six guests with minor injuries "have presented themselves to the Carnival Glory medical center for evaluation."

Makenna Morris, 21, from Salt Lake City, Utah, said that she was on the fourth deck of the Carnival Legend taking pictures when she noticed the Carnival Glory moving toward her ship. She said that as the Carnival Glory approached, she could hear passengers screaming as they prepared for the impact.

"I started hearing people yelling and screaming on the Royal Caribbean," Morris told NBC News. "That’s when I heard sounds of cracking and glass breaking.”

Morris also recalled hearing what sounded like scraping as the Carnival Glory made impact with the Carnival Legend.

“They ran into us and I was like 'holy crap'," Morris said. “The whole dining hall caved in and shattered.”

Carnival Cruise Line gives possible cause of accident in Mexico, apologizes to guests

Two ships for Carnival Cruise collided at a port in Cozumel on Monday morning. The company confirmed that one passenger was injured during an evacuation.

In a letter sent to guests on Friday, Carnival Cruise Line apologized for an earlier accident in Cozumel, Mexico , during which the Carnival Glory came into contact with the Carnival Legend while docking , resulting in six passengers sustaining minor injuries.

The captain of the Carnival Glory also confirmed an investigation into the cause of the accident, which the company currently believes was due to “spontaneous wind gusts and strong currents.”

CRUISE LINE ENLISTS 'LOVE BOAT' AND 'BACHELORETTE' STARS FOR WORLD RECORD ATTEMPT

“Dear Carnival Glory Guest,” begins the letter, which is attributed to Carnival Glory Captain Pero Grubjesic. “Welcome back from your day ashore. We hope you enjoyed your time in Cozumel.”

Grubjesic then apologized for that morning’s incident, which occurred as the Glory was “maneuvering” into its docking position, he said.

“A formal investigation is underway to confirm the cause of the accident, which we believe was due to spontaneous wind gusts and strong currents. The ship has been inspected by the required authorities and there are no issues that impact our ability to sail safely back to New Orleans.”

Grubjesic also confirmed that the six guests who presented themselves for medical examination following the collision had already been treated and released.

“Once again, we apologize for the disruption this may have caused,” Grubjesic wrote. “We will be extending a US$100, per stateroom, onboard credit to your Sail & Sign account.”

The ship itself stayed docked in Cozumel shortly longer than anticipated, Carnival says, to “complete some of our work.” Carnival Cruise Line also confirmed that guests planning to dine in the Platinum Restaurant dining area that evening would be accommodated, presumably as a result of the incident.

The ship left port in Cozumel on Friday evening at approximately 9 p.m. CST.

The initial incident, which Carnival is referring to as an allision as opposed to a collision (seeing as one of the ships was not actually moving at the time), took place on Friday morning at approximately 8:50 a.m.

Footage taken by onlookers shows the Carnival Glory maneuvering toward the dock alongside the Carnival Legend, scraping its stern against the Legend’s bow.

Carnival had initially received reports of one person injured while being evacuated from a dining area; five additional minor injuries were reported by Friday afternoon.

The Carnival Glory is due back in New Orleans on Dec. 22.

6 Passengers Injured After 2 Carnival Cruise Ships Collide Near Port in Cozumel, Mexico

The Carnival Glory was "maneuvering to dock" when it crashed into the already-docked Carnival Legend

cruise ship collision cozumel

Two Carnival cruise ships were involved in a collision on Friday morning that left six passengers injured.

In a statement to PEOPLE, the cruise line said the “Carnival Glory was in the process of docking” when it collided with the already-docked Carnival Legend near the port of Cozumel, Mexico.

The company considered the incident to be an allision — when a moving vessel collides with a stationary object — between the two ships.

Shocking footage captured by several witnesses showed the moment where the Legend’s front end slowly glided into a portion of the Glory’s windows, sending debris from the crash into the ocean.

Despite the damages, which all seemed to be above the water line, Carnival says they don’t anticipate the collision to affect their travel plans.

“There is no impact to the ships’ itineraries,” the Carnival spokesperson says. “We are assessing the damage but there are no issues that impact the seaworthiness of either ship.”

“We have advised guests from both ships to enjoy their day ashore in Cozumel,” the spokesperson added.

The company also confirmed that six guests went to Carnival Glory’s medical center for evaluation after the collision but only suffered minor injuries.

Several passengers who were on the cruise ships at the time of the incident spoke to CNN and said they barely felt the collision, which they were told in separate onboard announcements was a result of currents or high winds.

Carnival Legend passenger Mary Anne McKinley told the outlet that “the crash wasn’t too bad,” and compared the feeling to “a big wave crashing into the ship.”

Carnival Glory passenger Maddison Haynes told CNN she thought the boat was rocking from choppy waves because guests had felt them the night prior.

“Last night we experienced some major motion on the boat so this morning we assumed something similar was happening,” Haynes explained. “We felt a jolt and didn’t really think anything of it.”

While attempting to dock, one Carnival Cruise Line ship backed into another of the line’s vessels in Cozumel’s Puerto Maya pier on Friday morning, injuring one guest. Carnival Glory was pulling in when it bumped into the docked Carnival Legend .

UPDATE: How Cozumel Accident Will Impact Carnival Glory

The cause of the accident is still under investigation but from videos and photos taken as the incident was unfolding, it appears the collision was caused by high winds.

Carnival Cruise Line told Cruise Radio, “ Carnival Glory had a allision with Carnival Legend this morning in Cozumel. Carnival Glory was maneuvering to dock when it made contact with Carnival Legend which was already alongside. We are assessing the damage to both ships.”

The statement went on to say, “There is one reported minor injury of a Carnival Glor y guest that occurred when a group of guests were evacuated from the dining room on Decks 3 and 4.”

There’s no word yet as to whether either ship will wind up seeing their itinerary altered as a result of the accident and the inspections it made necessary.

The Incident Was Caught On Video

A witness who saw the event unfold from Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas told Cruise Radio that Carnival Legend was docked with the bow facing forward. Carnival Glory was backing in. The aft end of Carnival Glory made contact with the bow of Carnival Legend .

Glynis Knibb of the Royal Caribbean Periscopers group live-streamed the accident on the popular social media app.

It’s not terribly surprising that photos and video immediately surfaced. Many cruisers enjoy capturing the arrivals, departures and dockings of ships.

Carnival Legend and Carnival Glory are on seven-night Western Caribbean cruises from Tampa and New Orleans, respectively.

CruiseMapper logo

Passengers watched in shock as a couple of Carnival cruise ships collided near Cozumel Mexico on Friday, December 20. The collision was caught on video by several onlookers. It involved Carnival Legend and Carnival Glory . The shipowner is assessing the damages to both ships.

Carnival Cruise Line said in a statement that Carnival Glory had a collision with Legend this morning in Cozumel. Glory was maneuvering to dock when she made contact with Carnival Legend which was alongside. According to the cruise company, there had only been one minor injury reported from a Carnival Glory guest as a result of the accident. The passenger had been hurt while being evacuated from the dining room on decks 3 and 4.

Carnival also said there were no issues that impacted the seaworthiness of either ship. They had advised passengers from both vessels to enjoy their day ashore in Cozumel.

Videos and photos taken by people at the scene showed a gash through the middle decks at the stern of Carnival Glory. All damage to the liners appears to be above waterline.

According to Carnival, there will not be any disruptions to the planned itineraries. The next voyage for both vessels was "not impacted." Carnival Legend is scheduled to sail back to Tampa FL Sunday morning, December 22.

Passengers aboard two crashed Carnival cruise ships recount the moment of collision captured on dramatic video

  • Video footage captured two Carnival Cruise Line ships colliding off the coast of Cozumel, Mexico, on Friday.
  • The Carnival Glory collided with the Carnival Legend, and the moment of collision shattered the Glory's back windows.

In the video, people filming the incident from the shore and a neighboring cruise line could be heard reacting with gasps of astonishment, yelling and cursing as the ends of cruise ships plowed into one another.

  • However, passengers aboard the ships who felt the collision firsthand had varying experiences on when the point of impact was made.

Two Carnival Cruise Line ships collided off the coast of Cozumel, Mexico, on Friday.

Video footage of the incident captured the Carnival Glory sliding into the Carnival Legend, and the moment of impact shattering the Glory's back windows.

A spokesman for Carnival Cruise Line told The Washington Post that the crash was an "allision," because technically one was not moving. The Legend was docked when the Glory crashed.

Passengers aboard the ships - who felt the collision firsthand - shared their varying experiences when from the point of impact.

Jordan Moseley, a passenger on the Carnival Legend, told Reuters that he was eating breakfast on the ship when he felt the crash.

"All of a sudden we felt the ship rock to one side and then back into place," Moseley told Reuters. "A few minutes later, the cruise director announced that the Carnival Glory had crashed into our ship while docking due to the high winds and rough ocean conditions in Cozumel."

Another Carnival Legend passenger, Christian Maxey, was in his cabin below deck during the crash. He told The Washington Post that the ocean had been rough throughout the duration of the cruise, so he didn't think much of the crash.

"I don't think people really understood that we had actually hit something, given that our weather had been rocky," he told The Post.

Mary Anne McKinley, another passenger aboard the Carnival Legend, echoed a similar sentiment of mistaking the crash for a big wave.

"The crash wasn't too bad," McKinley told CNN . "Just felt like a big wave crashing into the ship."

The same could be said for one passenger aboard the opposite ship Carnival Glory, Maddison Haynes.

"Last night we experienced some major motion on the boat, so this morning we assumed something similar was happening," Haynes told CNN. "We felt a jolt and didn't really think anything of it."

Carnival Legend passenger Makenna Morris, who was on the fourth deck of the boat when the crash happened, told NBC News that she could hear passengers screaming as the Carnival Glory moved closer to their ship.

"I started hearing people yelling and screaming on the Royal Caribbean," Morris told NBC News . "That's when I heard sounds of cracking and glass breaking."

Being on one of the upper decks, Morris was able to see the damage of the crash first-hand.

"They (the Carnival Glory) ran into us and I was like 'holy crap'," Morris said. "The whole dining hall caved in and shattered."

Six passengers sustained "minor injuries" in the crash, The New York Times reported.

"We are assessing the damage but there are no issues that impact the seaworthiness of either ship," Chelsea Stromfeld, a spokeswoman for the cruise line, told The Times. "We have advised guests from both ships to enjoy their day ashore in Cozumel."

A Carnival cruise ship smashed into another cruise ship — and nearly clipped a second vessel — while docking at a port in Mexico, according to videos from the scene.

The massive Carnival Glory was sailing into a dock in Cozumel when it struck the Carnival Legend, which was already anchored nearby, the cruise ship company told Fox61.com .

The incident happened at the Mexican port of Cozumel.

New York Post reports of the incident, which happened Friday morning local time, one person suffered a minor injury on Glory as groups of guests were being evacuated from third- and fourth-floor dining rooms after the crash, according to the outlet.

Dramatic video footage shows the mangled Glory — with smashed-out windows and a bent railing — after it passed too close to the prow of the Legend.

“Holy s – t!” an onlooker can be heard shouting in video footage after a loud crash.

Additional video shows Glory nearly struck a second ship, Oasis of the Seas, which was also in the port.

Onlookers could be heard screaming as the collision became inevitable.

One person was lightly injured while evacuating a dining room on the massive ship named Carnival Glory, according to Carnival, the world’s largest cruise operator. A passenger said the incident occurred during rough sea conditions.

“Carnival Glory was manoeuvring to dock when it made contact with Carnival Legend which was already alongside,” the company said in a statement on Friday.

A video taken from an upper deck of Carnival Glory, which can carry nearly 3000 passengers, shows pieces of the ship tumble on to the deck of the oncoming vessel, with some splashing into the churning water.

“Oh my God, look at that ship!” an onlooker can he heard saying in the video posted on social media.

Injuries Reported After 2 Carnival Cruise Ships Collide In Mexico

December 20, 2019 / 11:00 PM EST / CBS Miami

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Two Carnival cruise ships collided Friday morning at the port in Cozumel, Mexico causing extensive damage to one of the ships.

The collision took place between the Carnival Glory and the Carnival Legend.

Six people were hurt but their injuries are not serious, according to Carnival.

Carnival CEO Arnold Donald spoke exclusively to CNBC and portions of the interview are on CNBC.Com.

"There was probably a sudden squall of wind that pushed the ship. But occasionally ships will touch in port but of course, you try to avoid that. This is not serious--but any allision we take seriously —but there's no real major damage to the ships," he told CNBC's "Closing Bell" Friday.

A passenger on the Oasis of the Seas posted a video on Twitter of the incident in which you can see the Glory swiping the back portion of the Legend.

CBS News spoke to its travel editor who also believes Mother Nature is to blame.

"Suddenly a 30 knot squall showed up at the most critical time of that particular maneuver and there was no way for that captain to recover." CBS News' Travel Editor Peter Greenberg said. "You probably don't see the captain going in full reverse and still moving forward. It takes a while for any ship to stop."

A statement released by Miami-based Carnival reads, "Carnival Glory had an allision with Carnival Legend this morning in Cozumel. Carnival Glory was maneuvering to dock when it made contact with Carnival Legend which was already alongside. We are assessing the damage but there are no issues that impact the seaworthiness of either ship. We have advised guests from both ships to enjoy their day ashore in Cozumel."

An allision is a nautical term used to describe when a moving ship collides with a stationary object, such as another ship.

Carnival Glory Collision Damage

The statement also says, "There is one reported minor injury of a Carnival Glory guest that occurred when a group of guests were evacuated from the dining room on Decks 3 and 4."

Here is another Tweet showing the damage from the dock.

A Carnival passenger spoke to the CBS Tampa affiliate, WTSP, Friday.

"We noticed we were really close to them, and next thing you know we just felt this big bump that rocked the boat a little bit," Logan Humphrey said.

The cruise line says the incident does not impact either ships' itineraries.

The Legend departed from Tampa on December 15.

The Glory is based out of New Orleans.

"I've never actually been on a cruise, so I have to admit that," Jackson tells Entertainment Weekly with a laugh. "When I first heard about the project, I didn't know what the project was about — I only knew that Ryan wanted to talk to me." And when the prolific TV producer wants to talk to you about a project, you take that call without question — especially since Jackson has wanted to work with Murphy for "a couple of decades now."

The fact that the show films on a set in Los Angeles (and not on an actual cruise ship in the middle of the ocean) was the cherry on top for the actor, since that meant he could live at home and be there for his family. "If we were filming on an actual cruise ship, it would make it very hard for me to drop my daughter off at school in the morning," Jackson says with a laugh. So he was ready to say yes before he even heard what the show or role was. And then Murphy gave Jackson his "soft pitch" on Doctor Odyssey , and he was thrilled.

Doctor Odyssey — also starring Don Johnson , Phillipa Soo, and Sean Teale — follows Max as he and his "small but mighty medical team navigate unique medical crises, and each other, miles from shore," according to the show's official synopsis. Executive producer Jon Robin Baitz says the collision of the gorgeous vacation setting with the harsh reality of injuries and illnesses is part of the fun of the series.

"People spend quite a bit of hard-earned money to go on these cruises, and there's an element of fantasy fulfillment, but with fantasy fulfillment comes risk and danger," Baitz tells EW. "On a boat, anything could happen, no matter how safety conscious you are. There's any number of opportunities for mishaps, and with that comes this wonderful parade of guest stars every episode, like lambs to the slaughter, meekly, joyously walking up the gangplank, not remotely aware of what will befall them."

But despite the life-threatening medical emergencies that arise in every episode, Jackson says the overall tone of the show is "on the lighter side" and "hopeful and optimistic," which is exactly what he was looking for in a project. "Our mission statement is to be enjoying ourselves at all times so that the audience can have an hour in the week where they can just sit back and enjoy," he adds. "It's supposed to be a one-hour vacation every week. You come aboard this boat as the medical cases happen, but also life happens, and by the end of the hour, hopefully you laughed, maybe even cried, and you go back into your week feeling just a little bit more relaxed for having gone on a nice cruise with us."

In addition to the procedural cases-of-the-week, Doctor Odyssey gets into the personal lives of the staff on the ship, which Baitz describes as "a wonderful upstairs-downstairs quality to the storytelling," like Downton Abbey on the water. "It's one thing to be with the guests on a cruise, people you normally see enjoying themselves fabulously, but we also get to go under the skin of it of the boat and see the workings of a world we haven't seen too much of," he says. "I don't think even in the wonderful and iconic Love Boat did we see too much of the real workings of boats."

As Max saves lives and begins to enjoy his life on the ship, Jackson found himself enjoying embarking on a new chapter of his career with this role. "It is very nice to play an uncomplicated good guy," he says. "Before I ever knew what the show was, I was kind of putting feelers out into the world [for this type of role], having played nothing but heavy and complicated men for the last 10 years. I like something that is uncomplicated and good, that there's decency in the character, and enter into the fray Max Bankman."

Before the series begins, Max has been living a good life, but then he decides he needs to make a change and enters this new world aboard the ship. "He finds himself in this group of his nurses and the environment of this boat that is completely outside of his comfort zone, and yet, no matter what happens, he treats all of the guests equally and with respect," Jackson says. "And the problems are solvable, and he's there to help. I love that as a core character trait — he's a guy who cares, he's genuine, and because he's a doctor, he's there to fix whatever is wrong."

Jackson laughs again as he realizes just how hard of a left turn this character is for him after playing more serious roles in The Affair, Fringe, Fatal Attraction , and Dr. Death , to name just a few. "I guess my late 30s and 40s were a dark period, because it's been a series of complicated guys," he says. "And those are fun. But to be on a set where coming home every day, the hours are long so you're tired, but you've laughed your way through your day, it feels pretty great."

And although he's played a doctor on TV previously, it was quite different from this. "The only doctor bit that I've done before was Dr. Death , which is at the complete opposite end of the spectrum, tonally, for a show," Jackson says. "And definitely, we are a medical show, and each week we have our cases or multiple cases, actually. But what the show actually is about is camaraderie and people trying to find family and the people you choose rather than the people that you're born into."

As for whether a love triangle will form between Max and his two nurses (played by Soo and Teale), Jackson laughs again. "I mean, have you ever seen a Ryan Murphy show?" he says. "There'll be triangles, rectangles, octagons. There will be romance. Every shape and flavor that you can possibly imagine will be explored."

Aye aye, captain.

Doctor Odyssey premieres Sept. 26 on ABC.
