The Lawrenceville Cookie Tour – A Holiday Treat

Pricing, operating hours, or menus may have changed since our initial visit and may not be reflected in subsequent updates. Please confirm these directly with any business or attraction prior to visiting.

In 2022, the Joy of Cookies tour was rebranded as The Lawrenceville Cookie Tour. We visited in a prior year with the previous name; however, we expect the format to be the same. In 2023, the Lawrenceville Cookie Tour will take place on December 9th and 10th.

The Lawrenceville Cookie Tour (formerly the Joy of Cookies Tour) has been an annual tradition for almost two decades.

This event takes place the first weekend in December and is basically an open house for Lawrenceville businesses and restaurants complete with free cookies at each stop.

If you want to support local businesses with your holiday shopping, or if there are shops you've always wanted to check out but always seem to pass by, The Lawrenceville Cookie Tour is a perfect event for you to explore this buzzing neighborhood.

A Self-Guided Trip Around Lawrenceville

Lawrenceville Joy of Cookies Tour

Although this event is dubbed as a “tour,” it's completely self-guided. Hop on the event's website to download a map of participating businesses, or pick up a map at one of the stops during the event. If you don't you needn't worry as each participating shop has a giant numbered gingerbread man signifying participation (and are hard to miss)!

Historically, the businesses are generally open from 10AM-6PM on Friday and Saturday and 10AM-5PM on Sunday, but each individual shop is free to set their own hours for the event. ( Note: In 2021, the event will be one day only, Saturday, December 11th, from 11AM-4PM.)

With dozens of participating shops over a 2-mile stretch, it's possible to make an entire day out of the cookie tour. Or you can choose to focus on just a few blocks or a specific kind of shop in particular if you're limited on time.

The Lawrenceville Cookie Tour

We checked out the cookie tour in 2017 and what we loved the most was that it gave us a chance to go into businesses that we'd never been in before. Lawrenceville is full of odd little shops that sometimes you may feel awkward going into if you're just browsing and not really sure what you'll find.

The open house feel of this event means that there's always lots of people coming and going into all the shops, so you don't need to feel awkward about just popping in somewhere quickly.

Too Many Great Spots to Visit on The Lawrenceville Cookie Tour

Lawrenceville Joy of Cookies Tour

Here are some of the cool businesses that we found during the event that we had never been in before but absolutely loved:

Beer on Butler : This is a great beer distributor with lots of craft beer options including bottles and cans from local breweries as well.

Riverside Design Group : Although this shop is moving out of Lawrenceville, we had to mention it. They offer beautiful glass plates, bowls, platters, and other items for your table settings, and the majority of the products are made right here in Western PA!

The Lawrenceville Cookie Tour

Cinderlands Beer Co. : This brewery opened just shortly before the cookie tour in 2017, and we just had to check it out. While we've found most new breweries seem to take a few months to hit their stride, we were pleasantly surprised with the creativity of the beer offerings here like the Test Piece NE IPA and their coffee milk stout.

Asian Influences : If you're looking for some Asian-inspired artwork, furniture, or home decor, this shop should be on your radar. The Asian attributes in their pieces range from overt to subtle, meaning there's something for everyone.

Lawrenceville Joy of Cookies Tour

We should note that we went on a Sunday late morning and early afternoon, and by that time some of the shops had run out of their free cookies. So if you're really banking on cookie-hopping through Lawrenceville, it's best to hit up the event as early as you can- you won't regret it!

The Lawrenceville Cookie Tour typically occurs the first weekend of December. In 2022, it will be on December 10th and 11th. The Lawrenceville Corporation publishes up-to-date information on each year's tour in advance.

Lawrenceville Cookie Tour

Our small businesses continue to need our support now more than ever. For twenty-three years, Lawrenceville has kicked off the holiday season by inviting visitors from all over into our businesses to collect treats at their favorite retail and restaurant locations during The Joy of Cookies, Cookie Tour.

The Cookie Tour grew to be one of the largest and most popular holiday events in the region, while also being an important revenue generator for our small businesses. The event helped to introduce new and long-time businesses to new clientele and helped to grow the vibrant spaces that Lawrenceville’s business corridors are today. With the health and safety of our community in mind, we have had to reimagine the Cookie Tour.

Last year, we invited businesses and patrons to participate in The Cookie Tour Rewards Card Program. Patrons of Lawrenceville businesses received a Cookie Rewards Card and as they visited various businesses between November 28 and December 28, 2020, they received cookies (stickers on the card) and those stickers/cookies earned them rewards.

This year, with input from our business community and lessons learned over the past two unique and challenging years, we’ve designed a hybrid Cookie Tour event. We’ll host a pre-covid style Cookie Tour event for a single Saturday in  December, December 11th, from 11am to 4pm . Businesses sign up to be a Cookie Stop or a Take-A-Break Stop as shoppers explore the neighborhood.  That’s right – real, edible cookies are back!

We’ll also be offering the  Cookie Tour Rewards Card again .  Any purchase a shopper makes at a Lawrenceville business gets them a sticker on their rewards card.  Once they reach ten purchases, they will be entered into a raffle of Lawrenceville based prizes such as events, baskets, gift cards, and/or exclusive experiences.

Looking to get in the holiday spirit this December? You are in luck because Lawrenceville’s beloved Cookie Tour and Rewards Card Program are back. For one day only, December 11th, you can hop on a trolley, snack on a wide variety of cookies, and explore the many small businesses that make Lawrenceville so unique. Last year, the Cookie Tour shifted to a Rewards Card program due to the pandemic. This year, the Rewards Card program lives on. Starting December 1st and running all month long, your Rewards Card will get punched when you make purchases at participating businesses along Butler Street. Once you make ten purchases, you will be entered into raffles for Lawrenceville experience-based prizes. So no matter if you’re doing your holiday shopping, grabbing a coffee, or picking up takeout from your favorite restaurant, you can earn punches that’ll enter you into the raffles. There will be a trolley making rounds for pick-ups and drop-offs throughout the business district so folks can explore Upper, Central, and Lower Lawrenceville. Guides for the event will be available at participating businesses and the LC Information Tent. The event guide will indicate which businesses are participating in the Cookie Tour and the Rewards Program. We look forward to welcoming you back! Bring a friend, a family member, or a furry friend to get out and experience the magic of Lawrenceville during the holidays. More information can be found at: www.lvpgh.com/cookietour2021

The Joy of Cookies, Cookie Tour is a Lawrenceville institution and holiday tradition. The Cookie Tour had its beginnings as a holiday open house at Jay Design Soaps & Gifts in 1997. Driven by the spirit of collaboration, the event grew to include more than a dozen businesses, and cookies were added around 2000. Today, the Cookie Tour has become Lawrenceville’s signature business district event, one which helps the business district grow economically, attracts visitors and exemplifies the strong spirit of community in Lawrenceville. Next Pittsburgh summed it up perfectly in a 2014 feature: “Equal parts cookie crawl and buy local movement, the free, family-friendly event showcases Lawrenceville’s thriving Butler Street business district.”

In 2020, the event had to take a pause due to the pandemic. The Cookie Tour Rewards Card was created as a way to still encourage shopping local and the idea of the Cookie Tour, but in a safe way.

This year, in 2021, we’ll be offering a hybrid event. We’re bringing back the Cookie Tour for one Saturday on December 11 from 11am-4pm. Businesses will offer cookies and there will be other holiday programming throughout the business district. Alongside the event, we will also kick off our Cookie Tour Rewards Card. The Rewards Card is a chance to shop local during the holiday season and earn prizes by purchasing items from your favorite Lawrenceville businesses.

The Lawrenceville Historical Society offers tours and talks throughout the year.
