Where we'll stay

Stay in some lovely guesthouses and hotels, including former fortresses, stylish mansions, chic country hotels and historic Paradors. Car Museums in Spain – Vintage Classics

Here at Totally Spain we prepare hundreds of custom self-drive holidays around Spain every year and some of our clients even choose to tour in their own vintage or classic car. When we put together any package for car enthusiasts, we suggest a trip to one of the car museums  in Spain which are so well put together that they are interesting even for those who aren’t diehard fan of old cars.

Car Museums in Spain – Vintage & Must-See Classics

Which vintage cars are the must-sees in Spain?

The four  must-sees for any car enthusiast are the regal Hispano-Suiza , the seductive Pegaso , the iconic Seat 600 and the officials’ favourite, Barreiros.

1 Hispano-Suiza The Barcelona-founded Hispano-Suiza dates back to 1904. The technical director Marc Birkigt was a Swiss engineer – hence the name. These were luxury vehicles driven by royalty, aristocrats, chiefs of commerce and movie-stars. The world’s first true sports car, the Alfonso XIII, was named after one of Hispano’s biggest fans and clients, King Alfonso XIII. Birkigt transferred his engine skills to airplanes during the First World War, and the use of the stork as the Hispano mascot statuette date from this period. A truly stunning brand. We challenge you to take a bad photo of one of these vehicles!

2 Pegaso Pegaso started out life in an old Hispano-Suiza factory. Its name is derived from the winged horse of Greek mythology, Pegasus. Primarily a heavy vehicle manufacturer, it produced a limited number of sportscars in the 1950s. Its lead engineer Wilfredo Ricart came to the company from Alfa Romeo. Although it succeeded in drawing the attention of the international circuit, it was unlucky in its early racing career and funding quickly dried up for the project. Exact numbers vary from source to source but somewhere between  50 and 150 were made so it’s one of the most rare of the Spanish built cars. You’ll see them cropping up at auctions from time to time.

3 The Seat 600 The Seat 600 was an icon of its era – produced from 1957-1973. It was the first reasonably priced car in Spain, making it attractive to many Spanish families. Almost 800,000 were built in the  Zona Franca plant in Barcelona – which is still producing Seats today. You’ll see it at many of the classic car museums in Spain and on the road at car rallies. Being rather slight in stature, it lends itself to challenges and competitions, rather like the Mini, and we came across a hilarious  video  in Spanish of 20 adults somehow or other squashing inside and driving around a TV studio.

4 Barreiros Rather like the Pegaso manufacturer, Barreiros, was another heavy vehicle producer, with bases in Madrid and Galicia. It produced the Barreiros Dart from 1963-1977 which was based on the Chrysler Dodge Dart. It’s a cult classic that lacks the curves of the Pegaso or the elegance of the Hispano Suiza – but it was an extremely popular car in Spain especially within senior levels of the administration. One such passenger – Franco’s confidante Carrero Blanco was travelling in his Dart when he was assassinated in 1973 and this vehicle can be seen at the Spanish Army museum in Toledo. You can also visit the Eduardo Barreiros Foundation museum NW of Madrid in Valdemorillo – prior arrangement necessary.

The best places to catch a glimpse of these motors is at a car museum. Salamanca and Malaga are the biggest and best known but there are a few more as you’ll see below:-

1  Automobile Museum of Malaga

Inside the old tobacco factory (which is interesting in its own right) you’ll find a well presented display of over 90 cars , plus temporary exhibitions and side exhibitions including period clothing and hats and other accessories . Great sculptures and light fitting made from car parts. This is a wonderful space for any car aficionado but also for accompanying family members. Technical descriptions of the cars are in Spanish and English which is great. And each vehicle display includes a period-dressed mannequin. Many of the vehicles present period pieces such as luggage, golf equipment or luggage on the outside, plus decanters etc. inside. The theming of the exhibition (Belle Epoque, Art Deco) means you get a sense of the art and design scene when each vehicle was on the road. We loved the 1920s Hispano Suiza . A great museum when you need a break from the pool or the beach in Malaga. Free parking in the museum which is a bus ride from the centre if you are car-free. Closed Mondays.

2  Museum for Automobile History in Salamanca (MHAS)

This was the first of the car museums in Spain to open to the public back in 2002. It focuses on the technical development of car design and features many early car models, motorbikes and a city fire-engine from the 1930s. But it’s not just the early workhorses you’ll find. Among the more than 90 cars on permanent display with temporary exhibitions drawing on the 200+ vehicles in the collection , you’ll find the glamour of the Pegaso and a few Hispano Suizas here . You’ll also find a stunning display of miniatures. Great temporary exhibitions as well. The historical references to many of the vehicles are mind-boggling as many of the previous owners were the cream of Spanish society. An interesting space for any visitor to Salamanca. The museum is located by the Rio Tormes – walkable from the city centre. Closed Mondays.

3  The Torre Loizaga Museum in Galdames

Featuring the the biggest private collection of Rolls Royce in Europe –  75 cars including 45 Rolls Royces on the grounds of a stunning tower, west of Bilbao. Visitors can enjoy a journey through almost one hundred years of history, from the oldest model, the Silver Ghost of 1910, to a Silver Spur of the 1990s.  Furthermore, Torre Loizaga is one of the few places in the world where all the models of the Phantom series, manufactured up to 1972, can be seen together. Often a stop-off on rallies and location for enthusiast club days out in the North of Spain. Open Sundays and public holidays only. Other days by prior arrangement. In Galdames. 30km from Bilbao. 95km from Santander.

4  The RACE Foundation Museum

RACE is a Spanish car insurance and roadside assistance company. Its museum is free of charge but you must arrange your visit in advance. Expect to see a Hispano Suiza from 1907 plus a range of other national and imported classics. Open Monday to Friday from 10am-2pm. Closed for the month of August. Located in San Sebastian de los Reyes in the region of Madrid (27km north of the city centre).

5 Travel Back in Time Car Museum in Downtown Madrid

If you must see a Hispano Suiza and you are in downtown Madrid, you should pop by the Sabatini Gardens near the Royal Palace. A family-run aparthotel business has put its family’s 22 classic cars and bikes on display in its basement. The exhibition is called Travel Back in Time .

6  Don Benito Car Museum , Don Benito, Extremadura

Just 54km from Merida, Spain’s newest car museum is home to 200 cars, 25 motorbikes, 10 tractors and a number of trucks also. Mainly imports from the US, UK and Argentina, it’s an interesting collection that has just been opened to the public. Located beside the train station.  Check the museum for opening times.

Insider Tip

Though not one of the car museums in Spain, it might as well be.  The 4 star Hotel Dome Madrid located in the Las Tablas area of Madrid has a terrific, permanent collection of luxury, classic cars on display throughout the hotel that are free to inspect up close.  Not an ideal location for touring Madrid city centre but car enthusiasts may like to take a trip by metro or taxi to check out the collection.

Pro-Tip: Get in touch with us if you are planning a unique driving holiday here as there are other private car museums in Spain and cultural foundations with classic cars on show. We can also find out about the regional rallies and open days arranged by the regional vintage car clubs across the country as well as the international rallies for Spanish and non-Spanish marques that take place in Spain. Some of the car museums in Spain even allow you to drive some of the models so let us know if that’s something you’d like to do. You might also want to check out our Driving in Spain & Portugal guide , plus our Most Spectacular Driving Routes in Spain post, and our Camino de Santiago Driving Routes guide also.

MSA Euroclassics Classic Car Tour of Spain and France

MSA Euro Classic Logo

There are a number of classic car tours which take place on the continent, and one of the more well-known is the MSA Euroclassic .

This is a hugely popular event because of both its history and excellent organisation.  It”s also a non-competitive event and takes place purely for the joy of driving classic cars along scenic European roads.  In fact, it”s a real celebration of classic car touring.

The 2012 tour is open to all four-wheel classic cars which are 20 or more years old, therefore made before 31 December 1991.  However, in the spirit of celebrating the classic car, the event has also accepted a limited number of modern classics such as a 2010 Aston Martin DBS.

This year”s event is particularly special, as it celebrates 20 years of the MSA Euroclassic.

Organised by International Motor Sports Limited (IMS), the 2012 programme has just the right balance of planned events and free time.

This year, the tour starts in León, in Spain, with an opening reception on Monday 24th September.  During the course of the week, the group will steadily make their way across Northern Spain, visiting sites such as the Grand Prix course Circuito del Jarama and some great places such as Madrid and Salamanca.

On Saturday, the tour moves into Southern France, with visits to further race circuits such as Albi and the also previous Grand Prix venues of Saint Gaudens and the Charade Circuit at Clermont-Ferrand.

The tours ends in Vichy on Tuesday 2nd October.

Throughout the trip, the tour has been carefully planned to take in as many scenic routes as possible, including hill climbs.  The route will even cross the famous Millau viaduct, which is the highest in the world.

This is probably a good time to mention that the tour has a dedicated break-down service throughout the trip!

Although the weather has generally been very good during September, unfortunately the weather forecast for this week looked more like something you”d expect to see for the Lake district rather than Spain and the South of France.  We hope that it will not dampen too many roadmaps, and that many of the cars have been able to enjoy some fine moments of open-top driving.

Now, I am really sorry if I have revved your engine regarding for this year”s tour, as it”s now too late to join.

But the MSA does have a website (www.msaclassics.co.uk), where you will soon be able to get information for the 2013 MSA Euroclassic.  And in the meantime there will also be photos from this year”s tour.

It”s also worth mentioning, that there are other European classic car tours which are planned for other times during 2013, keep an eye on my blog for future features on these.

Full Itinerary

DAY 1 – Arrival in Malaga

Arrive at the airport for your flight to Malaga from where you will be taken to your hotel.

DAY 2 – Ronda

After breakfast we take a drive into the hills forming the beautiful backdrop to the coast and then arrive in Ronda, a city widely acknowledged as one of the most spectacular in Spain and which enjoys a setting so naturally dramatic it could be in a fairy tale. Built on a ridge and split by a most impressive gorge plunging down hundreds of feet, much of Ronda’s appeal lies in its spectacular views and clear mountain air – Andalucía at its simple best. We continue our drive into the countryside beyond, which is both very scenic and quite isolated, so much so it is not unusual to see eagles and vultures soaring above or ibex roaming the mountains. Another treat awaits, as this evening we enjoy an introduction to delicious tapas. It is said that tapas dishes were originally slices of bread or meat used by sherry drinkers in Andalucían taverns to cover their glasses and keep fruit flies away. Over the centuries, with the introduction of olives, tomatoes, peppers and potatoes, tapas dishes gradually evolved into a most delightful tradition. (B)

DAY 3 – Seville

Flamboyant, seductive, fascinating…Seville is all these and more. It is simply one of the most beautiful and charismatic cities in the world, with the serene River Guadalquivir flowing through its centre, a history spanning the centuries, a wealth of historic buildings, colourful back streets and peaceful parks. Much of Seville was built during this time and it seems to have changed little in the last 500 years, with tiny twisting streets and hidden squares where the locals hide from the midday sun in high summer. Today, though, it possesses a vibrant, cultural spirit that is very special. The city of Figaro, this is the setting for another classic opera, Carmen. It’s also the home of flamenco, the origins of which are lost in the aeons of time. In short, this is the essence of Spain. After breakfast we have a sightseeing tour of this beguiling city, during which we’ll see the awe-inspiring semi-circular

Plaza de España, a fine example of Renaissance Revival and Moorish Revival styles of Spanish architecture. You’ll also see the Tower of Gold, so named as it was used to store plunder from the Americas, and much more. During the afternoon you’re free to explore Seville at your leisure. Why not wander the delightful Plaza de España, marvel at the wooden framework of the unusual Metropol Parasol or find a shaded café and enjoy a refreshing glass of fresh Seville orange juice? Or perhaps head to Mercado Lonja del Barranco, the perfect riverside spot to sample Spanish cheese and cured meat from the local area. (B)

DAY 4 – Free day in Seville

Today we have a free day. There are the ‘musts’ to visit if you wish, such as the Alcázar, the fortified palace of the Moors with a richness of decoration which will astound you, and the cathedral, but also take time to wander around the Barrio Santa Cruz, the former Jewish quarter of the medieval city, and the smart pedestrianised Calle Sierpes, a street full of beautiful shops selling high-quality leather goods. The Maria Luisa Park is a beautiful display of colour where you can relax and indulge in a spot of people-watching. (B)

DAY 5 – Cordoba

After breakfast we leave Seville and head east to another of Andalucía’s classic cities, arriving in Córdoba for our walking guided tour. Córdoba was the ancient capital of the Moors and is principally famous for a single building – the Mezquita – the grandest and most beautiful mosque ever constructed in the Moorish world. Dominating the centre of the Old Town, which was once the home of a thriving Jewish community, it is a building of extraordinary power and mystery with an arcaded hall supported by over 850 columns made of semi-precious stones. Another highlight is the immense, well-preserved Roman bridge. Córdoba is a delightful place full of patios drenched in the colour of thousands of flowers – the Spanish seem to take so much pride decorating their homes. We then continue our journey to arrive in the city of Granada, the last stronghold of the sultans during the Middle Ages and home to the Alhambra, the most spectacular gem of Moorish Andalucía. As we approach Granada, there can be no more proof of the diversity of this corner of southern Europe. We pass through some very arid countryside with a landscape of dried riverbed's, giving way to rolling olive groves. In the distance is the spectacular Sierra Nevada, the highest mountain range in Spain. (B)

DAY 6 – Granada & The Alhambra

Granada has a naturally dramatic location, nestling against the backdrop of permanently snow-capped mountains soaring majestically to a height of 11,000 feet. It is the perfect setting for the most perfect of architectural wonders, the Alhambra. So individual in its peaceful setting, so rich in its history and so exquisite in its design, this iconic building was the high point in Moorish culture. Today we visit the Alhambra and you’ll also have time to explore the city as you wish. There is a myriad of twisting streets, the old Moorish quarter and the traditional gypsy area, with seemingly every balcony sprouting flowers in a profusion of colour. Granada also boasts some of the most distinctive old bars in Spain, many of them decorated with antique tiles, where taking a drink and a few tapas can be an excuse for a unique, authentically Andalucían experience. (B)

DAY 7 – Return flight

Transfer to Malaga or Granada airport (depending on your departure date) for your return flight. (B)
