Reitan leads Challenge Tour event at Headfort as Purcell drops to seventh
KELLS, IRELAND - JULY 29: Kristoffer Reitan of Norway pictured on the 1st tee during Day Three of the Irish Challenge at Headfort Golf Club on July 29, 2023 in Kells, Ireland. (Photo by Charles McQuillan/Getty Images)
Kristoffer Reitan will take a one-shot lead into the final round of the Irish Challenge after battling through blustery conditions on day three at Headfort Golf Club.
The Norwegian started the day two shots off the lead but posted a three under par round of 68 to move to the top of the leaderboard on ten under, one ahead of American Jordan Gumberg in second place.
The 25-year-old, who became the first Norwegian to play in the U.S. Open in 2018, was pleased with how he was able to adapt his game in the wind after carding five birdies during the third round.
“It was so difficult out there,” he said. “It was very windy and the rain came in at one point too. I managed to keep the ball in play and get it on the green and luckily I holed some putts too. I’m very happy with the way I played today.
“It was exhausting at points but I managed to fight through and I’m happy with the way I dealt with the conditions.
“I hit a really poor chip shot right before I holed the next one at the sixth hole. It’s one of those clips you see on television and that has never happened to me before so I’m very happy it worked out today.”
Reitan has struggled to find consistency so far on the 2023 Road to Mallorca, making only three cuts in 14 appearances, but is relishing the chance to close out a maiden European Challenge Tour victory tomorrow in Kells.
“I’m going to keep focused because there’s a full round of golf to go and I’ve got a lot of work to do,” he said. “I’m working a lot on my game and there’s a long way to go in this tournament.
“I’m going to keep playing like I did today. There’s 18 holes to go and if I keep taking it shot by shot and executing those shots then hopefully that will be enough come the end of the day.”
Scotland’s Ryan Lumsden and English duo Sam Bairstow and Brandon Robinson Thompson share third place on eight under par, while Denmark’s Nicolai Kristensen is a shot further back in sixth.
Overnight co-leader Conor Purcell shares seventh place with Italian Lorenzo Scalise, Swede Adam Blommé, Northern Irishman Jonathan Caldwell and Frenchman Frederic Lacroix on six under par.

The Irish Challenge will return to one of Ireland’s finest and oldest estates when the next generation of golfing stars visit Headfort Golf Club from July 27-30, 2023.
Headfort Golf Club successfully hosted the Irish Challenge in 2019 as Spaniard Emilio Cuartero Blanco secured his maiden victory in a play-off, and the European Challenge Tour has selected the magnificent parkland layout to host once again this year.
The Championship Course, designed by Ryder Cup hero Christy O’Connor Jr, takes full advantage of Ireland’s natural beauty and is renowned for its majestic native trees and natural undulations.
In memory of one of Irish golf’s most popular and sadly missed characters, the Christy O’Connor Jr Memorial Trophy was introduced in 2016, and will be awarded to the highest placed Irish player at the end of the week. This player will also receive an invitation to the 2024 Horizon Irish Open.
The visit to Headfort forms part of the Challenge Tour’s Road to Mallorca International Schedule, which comprises 29 tournaments in 18 countries across the world.
The top 20 players on the Road to Mallorca Rankings at the conclusion of the Rolex Challenge Tour Grand Final at Club de Golf Alcanada, Mallorca, will earn DP World Tour playing privileges for the 2024 season. The last player from the island of Ireland to graduate from the Challenge Tour was Northern Irishman Tom McKibbin, who hails from the same golf club as Rory McIlroy, after finishing tenth on the 2022 Rankings.
Jamie Hodges, Head of Challenge Tour, said: “We are delighted to be taking the Irish Challenge back to Headfort Golf Club in July.
“The estate offers one of the finest parkland golfing experiences in Ireland and our members will relish the opportunity to compete on the Championship Course.
“We thoroughly enjoyed our first visit here in 2019 and we are looking forward to working with the team again to deliver a memorable event.
“We give special thanks to everyone at Headfort Golf Club for all their help and hospitality. Through our collective partnership and teamwork, our members will be treated to a first class tournament and an event that will be eagerly anticipated on the Challenge Tour schedule.”
Jacqueline McCormack, Chairperson of Headfort Golf Club, said: “On behalf of the club, I welcome the return of the Challenge Tour to our Championship Course in July.
“We are delighted to once again be given the opportunity to host a professional golf tournament of this level. The golfing fraternity in Ireland wait in anticipation to witness the upcoming golf stars from throughout Europe take on the magnificent challenge that the Championship Course poses.
“Headfort Golf Club is proud that the Challenge Tour is returning to Kells in County Meath and combined with our traditional hospitality look forward to meeting players and supporters on and off the course.”
Martin Donnelly, Product Sales & Distribution Manager of Fáilte Ireland, said: “Hosting the 2023 Irish Challenge is hugely important for Irish tourism because it gives us the opportunity to showcase our magnificent country and golf facilities to an international audience.
“Ireland is world-renowned for its high-quality golf product and the fact we welcome over 220,000 golf tourists each year is testament to this.
“Headfort Golf Club is one of the best parkland courses in Ireland and Fáilte Ireland are looking forward to working with this historic venue and the Challenge Tour to make this year’s Irish Challenge a superb event for everyone involved.”

Headfort ready to test the Challenge Tour’s best
Club professional brendan mcgovern reckons course will stand up to professionals.

For those young guns competing in this week’s Stone Irish Challenge at Headfort Golf Club in Kells, Co Meath, each one of them chasing that dream of making it to the big time, it might be worth their while taking some time out to pick the brains of the home club’s professional Brendan McGovern.
McGovern, who turned 54 years of age on Monday, is one of those who always talks sense. He has spent 29 years as the PGA Professional at the Meath course - which this week gets the opportunity to showcase its Christy O’Connor Junior-designed course, the newer of two on the wooded landscape – and it was only when he turned 50 that he truly got to chase his own dream as a tour player on the Staysure Tour.
That cut-throat Seniors circuit gave McGovern the opportunity to play in places from Moscow to Jordan and beyond, his best career finish coming at the 2017 Travis Perkins British Masters when he was runner-up. “I just love playing, the good and the bad. I always wanted to be a (tour) player when I was younger and it didn’t quite work out. Inside, I was always a golfer. When I got to 47 I thought I’d never get to 50 and I was fortunate enough to get my card,” recalled McGovern.
Given his affinity with Headfort, which is staging this tournament for the first time, the thought occurred to many that maybe he would give it a go against these young players who are on their own journeys. But not him. “I won’t be playing. I feel somewhere along the line you have to move on. There’s no point me keeping a young player out, you have to move on. I not starting a career, I am on the other side,” said the wise old head.

Aer Lingus mishap the only Irish connection with this Solheim Cup
And so it is that this week’s Stone Irish Challenge will be a defining tournament of the season for many of those teeing up, given that it is the final full field event of the season on the Challenge Tour after which the leading 70 players retain their cards for next season and move onwards in the Race to Mallorca next month where full cards for next season’s PGA European Tour will be won.
This €200,000 tournament on the New Course has an added incentive for the winner, in that it will earn him a place in the upcoming two limited field events in China – the Hainan and Foshan Opens – while it is worth noting that each of the last three winners of the event have all gone on to play the European Tour the following season (Bernd Ritthammer, Julien Gurrier and more recently Oliver Wilson).
There is a strong Irish challenge in the event, headed by Cormac Sharvin – ranked eighth in the order of merit – and Gavin Moynihan, stepping back from the main tour, with the potential to be a stepping stone onto greater things should any of the 15-strong home brigade manage to lay claim to the title.
So, how will the wonderfully conditioned New Course stand up to these big-hitting young guns? “The Challenge Tour is a world tour and the standard is from all over the world. The standard is good and the scoring will be good. As far as these guys hit it length won’t be an issue but they will need to hit every club in the bag. It will be a good test,” said McGovern.

2024 U.S. Open odds, predictions, golf picks: Scottie Scheffler projection by model that nailed last 2 majors
Scottie scheffler, the no. 1 player in world golf, will seek his third career major championship in the 2024 u.s. open at pinehurst no. 2.
The No. 2 course at Pinehurst in is one of the most famed in golf and for the fourth time in its history it will host the U.S. Open beginning on Thursday, June 13. The 2024 U.S. Open will mark the third major of the year and Scottie Scheffler will try to add to his case for PGA Tour Player of the Year. Scheffler won his second green jacket at the 2024 Masters and hasn't finished worse than 17th in 12 starts this season.
Scheffler is the 4-1 favorite in the 2024 U.S. Open odds. Xander Schauffele won the PGA Championship and is 10-1 among the 2024 U.S. Open golfers behind only Scheffler and four-time major champion Rory McIlroy (9-1). Before locking in your 2024 U.S. Open picks or Scottie Scheffler props, be sure to see the golf predictions and projected leaderboard from the proven computer model at SportsLine .
Our proprietary model, built by DFS pro Mike McClure, has been red-hot since the PGA Tour resumed in June of 2020. In fact, the model is up almost $9,000 on its best bets since the restart, nailing tournament after tournament.
McClure's model correctly predicted Scottie Scheffler would finish on top of the leaderboard at the 2024 Masters, the Arnold Palmer Invitational, and The Players Championship this season. McClure also included Hideki Matsuyama in his best bets to win the 2024 Genesis Invitational. That bet hit at +9000, and for the entire tournament, McClure's best bets returned nearly $1,000.
The model also predicted Jon Rahm would be victorious at the 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions and The American Express. At the 2023 Masters, the model was all over Rahm's second career major victory heading into the weekend. Rahm was two strokes off the lead heading into the third round, but the model still projected him as the winner. It was the second straight Masters win for the model, which also nailed Scheffler winning in 2022.
This same model has also nailed a whopping 12 majors entering the weekend, including three straight Masters and the 2024 PGA Championship. Anyone who has followed it has seen massive returns.
Now with the U.S. Open 2024 field taking shape, SportsLine simulated the tournament 10,000 times, and the results were surprising. Head to SportsLine now to see the projected leaderboard.
Top 2024 U.S. Open predictions
One major surprise: Bryson DeChambeau, a 20-1 longshot, makes a strong run at the title. He's a target for anyone looking for a huge payday. A former NCAA national champion at SMU and the low amateur at the 2016 Masters, DeChambeau has piled up 12 wins since turning professional after his performance at Augusta in 2016.
That includes a major championship win in the 2020 U.S. Open at Winged Foot. DeChambeau used his considerable length to blitz the field that week in New York, beating Matthew Wolff by six shots. The 30-year-old was t-6th at the Masters and finished solo second at the PGA Championship and he's had four other top-10 finishes in 2024.
The model has also examined where Scottie Scheffler finishes. The 27-year-old has spent 89 weeks of his career at No. 1 in the Official World Golf Ranking and has managed to hold onto that title for 55 weeks in a row. Already considered one of the world's best ball-strikers, he's improved on the greens in 2024 and is putting together the best season of his career.
Scheffler has won four times this year and is a 10-time PGA Tour winner overall. That includes a victory at the 2024 Masters that came during a stellar stretch in which he had four wins and a runner-up finish over a span of five starts. However, while he's consistently near the top of the leaderboard in major championships, he still hasn't been able to break through for a victory in a grand slam event outside of Augusta National Golf Club. The model just locked in its Scottie Scheffler U.S. Open picks here. .

The model is also targeting two other golfers with odds of 20-1 or longer to make a strong run at the title. Anyone who backs these longshots could hit it big. You can only see the model's picks here .

Power Rankings: the Memorial Tournament presented by Workday

For as powerful as Jack Nicklaus presented as a golfer, he wouldn’t have become a living legend and arguably the greatest of all time without an equal measure of touch. Many things can be measured but only he knows how it’s felt. That balance contributed to his career as a course architect, and it is within the spirit of an artist for why a masterpiece truly never is complete.
Muirfield Village Golf Club is in its fourth year following a renovation that left little updated, but – shocker! – there’s yet another significant change to a not-so-significant hole of the stern Nicklaus design that rises into focus for the 49th edition of the Memorial Tournament presented by Workday.
Details of it and more information concerning the seventh Signature Event of the season are below.
The Memorial is the last of the three legacy invitationals of the season. Like The Genesis Invitational and the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard previously contested, there will be a 36-hole cut of low 50 plus ties and all golfers within 10 strokes of the lead. The field is 73 deep as of midday Monday. The Travelers Championship that concludes the series of Signature Events on June 20-23 will not have a cut.
Muirfield Village in Dublin, Ohio, is positioned to serve as a proper primer for next week’s U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2. The course will punish the unprepared. As the stock par 72 has matured in its latest iteration, scoring has risen steadily with averages it hadn’t logged in a decade. It eclipsed 73 in each of the last two years, the higher of which 73.522 a year ago. That’s due in part to the fact that it was the stingiest course in all of 2022-23 in yielding greens in regulation at just 9.39 on average per round.
The quartet of par 3s also was the toughest set among all courses with a scoring average of 3.21, while the par-3 16th hole has been in a class of its own. In 2017, 2020 and 2023, it was the hardest of all par 3s on the PGA TOUR in each of those seasons. Last year’s average was 3.36. However, if any entrant had the audacity to look forward to its challenge this year, he will be greeted with an entirely new angle.
The tee is 30 yards to the right of its old perch. That has shifted the perspective of the water hazard from front to primarily left of the target that now looks deeper even though it hasn’t changed. A front bunker was replaced with short grass and the hole was reduced by two yards to its new maximum of 218 yards. It’s the only major modification to Muirfield Village that now tips at 7,569 yards.
Bentgrass greens average 5,000 square feet and will approach if not eclipse 13 feet using a Stimpmeter. Primary rough is four inches as usual, so the course tests similarly. Muscle plays off the tee, irons must be sharp on approach, pars don’t suck.
Cooperative conditions are forecast throughout the tournament. That doesn’t mean that a sprinkle can be ruled out entirely but a delay is unexpected as daytime temperatures scale into the 70s. The primary challenge will be in the form of wind. The constant will be its prevailing push from westerly directions. (Wednesday’s Golfbet Insider will include an updated review of the weather.)
The survivor, er, champion of the Memorial will bank 700 FedExCup points and $4 million. He’ll also secure an exemption into THE PLAYERS Championship through 2027 through which his PGA TOUR membership exemption will extend (or longer depending on his current status).
