You can’t put Carrie Underwood in a box

After a remarkably versatile show in salt lake city thursday night, it would be a disservice to say underwood is solely a country artist.

By Lottie Elizabeth Johnson

After floating over the crowd on a pink floral swing, Carrie Underwood gently landed on a small platform, picked up a guitar and began to sing “ Two Black Cadillacs ,” a dark ballad about two women who exact murderous revenge on a cheating man.

Following that ominous number, Underwood seamlessly transitioned to a vastly different theme — her Savior. The singer gave her congregation of 20,000 a sermon about the importance of being nice to one another and lifting each other up. She then sang one of her earliest hits, the soul-searching “Jesus Take the Wheel,” before performing a soul-stirring chorus of “How Great Thou Art.”

Seven songs later, Underwood was donning a black leather Guns N’ Roses jacket and channeling her inner Axl Rose with a cover of “Welcome to the Jungle.”

She has 25 CMT Awards , 16 Academy of Country Music awards and nine Country Music Association awards — not to mention eight Grammys — but after a remarkably versatile show in Salt Lake City Thursday night, it would be a disservice to say Underwood is solely a country artist.

She’s so much more.

The shocking versatility of Carrie Underwood

Throughout her nearly two-hour set, Underwood’s music had hints of country, gospel, pop, soul, jazz, blues and hard rock. One song would mimic Dolly Parton’s soft, lilting style, and the next would elicit a rasp that would’ve been right at home with Axl and his cronies. One minute the arena felt like a small chapel and the next it was a full on rock show, complete with Underwood pounding out an unexpected drum solo.

It’s a conglomeration of her many influences. Underwood, an Oklahoma native, grew up on gospel and country, but she recently told Rolling Stone she’s always been “mesmerized” by Rose’s vocal style and has spent a lot of time trying to emulate it. Earlier this year, she even convinced Rose to join her at the Stagecoach Festival. A few months later, Guns N’ Roses reciprocated and invited Underwood onstage for a show in London.

It’s a shocking versatility, and Underwood doesn’t hold back. In Salt Lake City, she rose from beneath the stage and hit the ground running. She threw her body and soul into each song — from the first note of her opening number, “Good Girl,” to the middle of her set with the emotional “Cry Pretty,” which earned her a standing ovation before she even hit the last note, to the final chord of her closer, “Before He Cheats.”

With a voice like that, you don’t need much else to entertain a crowd.

But Underwood’s voice is just one part of the equation.

More than a voice

Underwood’s live show is a spectacle — a glittery surface that belies the gritty nature of many of her songs.

In a similar vein to Kiss, the singer channels her hard rock side with pink streamers, fire, sparks and elaborate aerial contraptions to move her across the arena. Her several outfit changes — from a sparkly ensemble to a traditional Western getup to a leather jacket — mirror the fact that she is no one-trick pony.

To make a long story short: You can’t put Carrie Underwood in a box.

She puts on a staggering production, and you can’t help but marvel at how she does this night after night. It’s as physically demanding as it is vocally, and she doesn’t give herself much time to rest — anytime she leaves the stage is for an outfit change.

Carrie Underwood performs on her “Denim and Rhinestones” tour.

But there is a little give and take with this kind of production. Underwood provides a stunning visual component that is impossible to glean from an album. But the intensity of her show means the nuances of her music — like the storytelling quality and dynamics that are so exposed on her recordings — get a little lost. For the most part, Underwood performed at the same volume for two hours. It’s an impressive volume, though, and at times it was still hard to hear her, so she needed to be loud.

The set list appears to be largely the same from show to show. Arena shows are generally well-oiled machines, and considering all of the intricacies of Underwood’s production — including specific projections that go with each song — it would be hard to substantially deviate. But the singer still manages to create unique moments with her fans, like opening an envelope and revealing to a couple in the audience that they would be having a baby girl (she encouraged them to name that girl Carrie).

A proposal for Carrie Underwood

When recently describing her newest album, “Denim and Rhinestones,” the singer said in a statement : “You have these things that are great on their own and then you put them together and they just fit.”

The same can be said for Underwood’s live shows. The way she performs, you may find yourself wondering why “Welcome to the Jungle” and “How Great Thou Art” aren’t paired together more often.

In the last four years, Underwood has released two country-pop albums, Christmas music and a gospel record. When her “Denim and Rhinestones” tour wraps up, Underwood should hurry to the studio to record a rock album.

Based on her reception in Salt Lake City, it might just work.

Whether singing barefoot while straddling an orb-shaped contraption ferrying her high above the crowd, holding notes for lengthy periods without veering off key, delivering witty narratives as she sipped red wine or wielding microphone stands as potential weapons, Underwood showcased incredible versatility and oozed charisma. She also knew how to have fun. From the instant streamers rained from the rafters amid the opening song “Good Girl” to the moment pyrotechnic blasts acted as sharp daggers on the closing “Before He Cheats,” the superstar paused only to change costumes.

Underwood’s breathless energy shouldn’t be news to anyone keeping tabs on her. The Oklahoma native has maintained a whirlwind pace since winning “American Idol” in 2005. Unlike the show many viewers once considered appointment television, the vocalist has remained a constant mainstream presence. During the past five years, she released four albums, including a gospel collection, a Christmas LP and the recent “Denim & Rhinestones.” She also penned a bestselling lifestyle-and-fitness book (“Find Your Path”), launched an exercise app and completed the second part of a Las Vegas residency this past spring.

Those accomplishments add to a resume that includes eight Grammy Awards, 16 ACM Awards, 23 CMT Music Awards and 17 American Music Awards. Underwood reigns as the most-followed female country artist on several social media platforms and continued her decade-long involvement with the opening of “Sunday Night Football” on NBC last month. She’s also prolonging another long-standing practice, philanthropy, by donating money from each ticket sold on her current “Denim & Rhinestones” tour to the nonprofit Tunnel to Towers Foundation.

Yet for all the tradition that still informs Underwood’s career, nothing at present seems more impactful than her having invited Guns N’ Roses vocalist Axl Rose to perform two songs with her at the Stagecoach Festival this past April — and calling it “the greatest night of my life.” Rose and his band returned the favor in July at two concerts in London. On Saturday, Underwood seemingly projected those experiences onto a broader canvas.

Performing with joyful swagger and unflappable confidence, Underwood remained in full-on rock star mode throughout the 115-minute set. She and her eight-piece band hinted at the mood before the curtain even dropped by blaring Motorhead’s “Ace of Spades” over the PA system as the lead-in to their spectacle. If that message wasn’t clear or loud enough, the Grand Ole Opry member later took a surprise turn behind the drum kit and, hair and arms flailing, pounded out a solo that would’ve made Dave Grohl smile.

Indeed, Underwood could’ve easily been describing herself when she sang, “‘Cause when she walks in / Poor everybody else.” She owned the main stage — as well as a small area at the opposite end of the venue and the air separating the two spaces. A combination of three hydraulic lifts, two aerial devices and a pair of ramps complemented a multi-tier platform that stretched to the middle of the arena. Three video screens ensured everyone enjoyed close-up views of Underwood’s glamorous outfits. Her singing needed no such technological assistance.

Replete with stamina, control, purity and depth, Underwood sang with hurricane-strength force and avoided the exaggeration that plagues many pop divas. Though many of the glittery visuals and glossy arrangements suggested sweetness, her authoritative tones indicated otherwise. Underwood’s songs frequently featured female protagonists taking charge of their lives (“Undo It”), reclaiming their identity (“Ghost Story”) and/or emerging from toxic situations (“Church Bells”). Her vocals — assertive, dramatic, determined, a balance of fierce intensity and graceful power — gave them toughness, pride and courage.

Singing in an understated manner that conveyed relief more than anger, she put a clever twist on the conventional country trope of cheating on “She Don’t Know.” Electric guitar in hand, the vocalist approached the same theme with noir-like secrecy and gritty menace on “Two Black Cadillacs.”

Not everything in Underwood’s universe involved victims or broken hearts. Anchored by a keytar and synth-pop melody, the summery “Denim & Rhinestones” found her dancing and duetting with opener Jimmie Allen. On several faith-themed excursions, Underwood sang with unblemished sincerity. In segueing from “Jesus, Take the Wheel” into a brief interpretation of the spiritual “How Great Thou Art,” she channeled her church roots and hit gospel peaks.

Her range and magnetism extended to her movements. With her band following her every step, Underwood strutted, shuffled, kicked, stomped and sashayed. At a few junctures, she headbanged. The singer’s left arm often spoke a language of its own, and when needed, she crouched into a compact stance to allow herself more lung capacity to project over the din of fiddles, banjos, slide guitars, keyboards and percussion. Underwood’s only glaring misstep? Piping in a pre-recorded video of Jason Aldean for a duet of “If I Didn’t Love You.” It reeked of artifice.

By contrast, Underwood’s embrace of hard rock sounded utterly convincing. Bringing it full circle, she emerged toward the end of the concert in a black Guns N’ Roses jacket and belted out a searing rendition of the group’s “Welcome to the Jungle” complete with hip-and-leg swaying that aped the moves of Rose’s signature glide. Though Underwood’s sass on many tunes implied the sentiment, here, she openly declared it: She is not to be crossed. And how.

Memo to Underwood: Go the distance and get in a studio to make a warts-and-all rock album, be it covers or originals. If you record it, they will come.

Carrie Underwood – ‘Denim & Rhinestones’ review

Emma Jordan

Eight-time Grammy Award winner Carrie Underwood celebrates seventeen years in the music industry this year, and is still having so much fun, going by the release of her ninth studio album, ‘Denim & Rhinestones’.

The 12 tracks, about love and heartbreak and the other woman, are mostly upbeat, fun songs, which was Carrie’s intention, as artists return to the stage. To paraphrase the title song from her double platinum 2012 album, the CMA Fest 2022 audience was blown away during her blisteringly entertaining Saturday headline set.

The album opens with the title track, ‘Denim & Rhinestones’, a pop-infused nostalgic love song, reminiscent of the eighties decade and Underwood’s third album, Play On.  ‘Velvet Heartbreak’ follows a similar musical vein, in the direction of, well, heartbreak.  Underwood has already performed third track, the enigmatic ballad and lead single ‘Ghost Story’, live a couple of times, this year at the 2022 Grammy Awards and the 2022 CMT Music Awards, ahead of the album release, and it’s one of the strongest songs on Demin & Rhinestones, because of the hook of a chorus and the intriguing love story.

Other standout songs on the album are the is the home-based ballad ‘Burn’, the warning-song of ‘Poor Everybody Else’ and ‘Wanted Woman’, for the western-reference title and the upbeat electronic dance direction. This juxtaposition of contrasting ideas, weaves through the whole concept album – of having a good time and taking care of the business of the heart – and doesn’t quite reach the magnitude of ‘Blown Away’, the RIAA Platinum ‘Storyteller’, or 2018’s ‘Cry Pretty’ albums.

But, you know, ‘Denim & Rhinestones’ isn’t taking itself seriously; sometimes we just need to shake off a bad relationship, grab our pals and head out for a good time; ‘Crazy Angels’ and ‘Pink Champagne’ make decent pop-country companions.

Perhaps acknowledging the previous, faith-based albums, that Underwood released in the last couple of years, is the gentle album closer ‘Garden’.

Carrie Underwood is an outstanding performer, an icon of country music and her vocals were made for arenas . On release day, ‘Denim & Rhinestones’ shot to the top of the charts, and legions of fans will have already learned these lyrics, ahead of the 43 date tour when it kicks off in October.

His third album Tulip Drive will be released June 24.

"I'm thrilled to be hitting the road again with THE DENIM & RHINESTONES TOUR," says Underwood. "I'm having such an amazing time with my Las Vegas residency and look forward to continuing that next year after the tour. I'm excited to bring the new music of Denim & Rhinestones to life on tour, as well as put new spins on familiar favorites. We've been working hard already preparing an amazing show, and I can't wait to see everyone on the road!"

The all-new production will be directed by Barry Lather (Rihanna, Mariah Carey, Michael Jackson), and Nick Whitehouse/Fireplay (Justin Timberlake, Beyonce) is Production Designer.

Since early in her career, Underwood has designated a portion of ticket sales from her tours to support worthwhile charities and organizations. She continues that tradition by arranging for a donation of $1 from each ticket sold for THE DENIM & RHINESTONES TOUR to be contributed to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation (t2t.org), which has been helping America's heroes since 9/11 by providing mortgage-free homes to Gold Star and fallen first responder families with young children and by building custom-designed smart homes for catastrophically injured veterans and first responders. The Foundation is also committed to eradicating veteran homelessness and aiding the victims of major U.S. disasters.

Underwood will release her highly anticipated album, Denim & Rhinestones, on June 10. The album is her latest collaboration with David Garcia, with Garcia and Underwood having co-produced her critically acclaimed 2018 release, Cry Pretty, which marked the first time Underwood produced her own album.

Garcia and Underwood also co-produced Underwood's 2021 GRAMMY® Award-winning album of gospel hymns, My Savior. The lead single from the new upcoming album, "Ghost Story," is currently climbing the charts and has garnered over 30M global streams. The song's cinematic music video, directed by acclaimed director and photographer Randee St. Nicholas, is available now.

The Denim & Rhinestones Signed CD Box Set and Vinyl Box Sets are available for preorder now, which include an exclusive t-shirt, rhinestone pack, denim tote bag, and album slip mat in limited quantities here. Fans can order from physical retailers here. The vinyl edition will be available in July and a cassette version on August 5.

Also in 2019, Underwood performed her UK arena tour, THE CRY PRETTY TOUR UK, which brought her dynamic production and signature vocal prowess to thousands of fans throughout England, Wales and Scotland with five arena shows.

The Time Carrie Underwood Lived Out a “Lifelong Dream” of Performing “Welcome to the Jungle” With Axl Rose

by Chris Piner May 30, 2024, 11:55 am

Having spent over 20 years in the music industry, Carrie Underwood gained fame when she won the fourth season of American Idol back in 2005. That moment helped open the door to music. That door never closed as she went on to release nine studio albums and sell over 85 million records worldwide. A true professional when it comes to music and touring, the singer spent a great deal of 2023 helming her Denim & Rhinestones Tour. And knowing how to entertain fans, she once shared the stage with Axl Rose to perform the iconic song “Welcome to the Jungle.”

Videos by American Songwriter

Throughout her tour, Underwood often covered hit songs alongside her own lineup. While fans watched her perform “Welcome to the Jungle” numerous times, back in March 2023, fans received a special treat when she took the stage and introduced Rose. Wearing a zebra print jacket, the frontman seemed right at home alongside Underwood.

Not The First Time Carrie Underwood Performed With Axl Rose

While rocking out on stage, it wasn’t the first time Carrie Underwood and Rose performed together. Back in 2022, the pair entertained a sea of fans at Stagecoach. Discussing the opportunity, Underwood told Rolling Stone , “I’ve been covering Guns N’ Roses my whole life, pretty much, and definitely onstage for the past 15 years at least. I had asked before if he would ever come sing, or if I could come to him somewhere. We had a couple almost maybes, where it almost maybe would have happened, but for various reasons, it wasn’t the right time.”

Underwood later wrote on Instagram, “Best. Night. Of. My. Life!!! I am still freaking out. Thank you, Axl, for making this lifelong dream come true!!!You rocked that @stagecoach stage harder than anyone has ever rocked it before!”

Although taking years to perform with him, Underwood shared how their first performance came about. “I sent him an email and said, ‘We’re so close to you,’ and explained the why and what he meant to me. The way I learned how to sing was I would pick really hard vocalists to try to emulate, and his voice always mesmerized me. I was like, ‘How is he doing the things that he’s doing?’”

Not afraid to ask, Underwood was shocked when he agreed. While loving the opportunity to sing with the icon, Underwood hoped he had a good time. And as for their duet on “Welcome to the Jungle”, it continues to showcase the wide range of the singer.

On May 26, Twitter user @rickeverittuk tagged the " Out of That Truck " singer in a video and photo showcasing turtles swimming in a river in Texas. He then captioned the post by joking that Carrie would probably "love" to be near the reptilian animals as they hung out. But when she responded to the tweet the next day, it appeared that she didn't seem too sold on the idea. What's more, the country singer inferred that she'll probably never be present for anything involving turtles.

"My worst nightmare …👎🙅‍♀️," she wrote on May 27.

When fans saw the American Idol alum's take on the surprise subject, they immediately started laughing in the comments. Unsurprisingly, some folks couldn't help but kid around with Carrie after her reply.

"😂," one person wrote on Twitter. "Watch Isaiah and Jacob want a turtle as a future pet ... 🐢💚😅😂🤣🙂," a different follower joked, mentioning her two sons with husband Mike Fisher . "So that's a no to turtles ... how do you feel about frogs?" another added with a caveat for her thoughts on the amphibian.

Although Carrie never did answer the question about frogs, she has opened up in the past about her fear of turtles. During a January 2021 appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show , the " Before He Cheats " songstress disclosed how the phobia came about. It turns out that she's been afraid of turtles since childhood, after experiencing some mishaps with them.

"It's not a petrifying fear of turtles [but] I feel like out of all the animals on the planet, they're the ones who have bit me the most," she said on the daytime TV show. "It's very strange. I grew up in the country. Turtles were the easiest things to catch because they are slow."

Carrie continued: "I would catch them and I love animals so much that I feel like I would always try to pet them or hug them and that led them to taking opportunities. I've been bitten by lots of turtles — it does not feel good."

Though an unexpected fear, it does make sense!

CANTON, Ohio , May 21, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Hall of Fame Village today announced the exciting addition of Jackson Dean as the opening act for Carrie Underwood at the 2024 Concert for Legends. Set to electrify audiences, this extraordinary event will take place on August 4, 2024 at 8 p.m. ET , hosted at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium during this year's Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Week.

"His dynamic energy and exceptional talent perfectly complement this star-studded occasion. Fans can anticipate an unforgettable evening of music, paying homage to both football legends and musical icons."

Jackson Dean , a rising country singer/songwriter known for his gritty, old-school style, emerged onto the scene with his debut album "GREENBROKE" under Big Machine Records. His single, "Don't Come Lookin'," became the fastest debut to reach No. 1 in 2022, earning widespread acclaim and over 80 million streams. Dean has shared stages with country icons like Toby Keith and Miranda Lambert and appeared at prestigious events such as Austin City Limits and Stagecoach.

ABOUT   JACKSON DEAN :   Fast-rising Country singer/songwriter  Jackson Dean  is quickly earning a reputation for his old school, gritty, lyric-driven, outlaw style of Country. Mature beyond his years, Jackson opted to move out to a cinderblock, concrete floor, one-room shack on the back of his grandfather's property with no heat and no plumbing at just 18 years old. An adventurous and carefree spirit, the 22-year-old multi-instrumentalist, is also an old soul and skilled artisan whose pastimes include making leather goods, wood-burned art and disappearing into the woods to sleep under the stars. Bringing that same sense of adventure and downhome vibe to his songwriting, the "modern-day Country rambler" ( Taste of Country ) burst on the scene, showing people how real music can be with his atmospheric, musically-forward debut album  GREENBROKE (out now via Big Machine Records). The Maryland native's single, " Don't Come Lookin' " was the fastest debut to reach No. 1 in 2022 and cemented Jackson as the youngest solo male Country artist to reach the top of the charts with a debut. Landing spots on the  Billboard Hot 100 , the soundtrack for Netflix's  The Ice Road  and a John Dutton scene in  Yellowstone,  the song 80 million streams. Following an early career of local performances in his hometown, Jackson has joined bills with superstar acts like Toby Keith , Miranda Lambert , Brantley Gilbert , Kane Brown , Jake Owen , Brooks & Dunn, Lee Brice and Brothers Osborne and found himself on the bill for credible events like Austin City Limits and Stagecoach. After floating over the crowd on a pink floral swing, Carrie Underwood gently landed on a small platform, picked up a guitar and began to sing "Two Black Cadillacs," a dark ballad about two women who exact murderous revenge on a cheating man.
