Time Out says

An immersive experience with massive, ultra-realistic dinosaurs that takes place on the grounds of the Bronx Zoo is back!

Dinosaur Safari asks visitors to the zoo to traverse a path filled with 52 life-sized dinos and pterosaurs through a wooded area, where they will see the largest flying animal to ever live (the Quetzalcoatlus) and, of course, the Tyrannosaurus rex and the vegetarian Omeisaurus that stretches an impressive 60 feet long. When it first opened in 2019, it was a ride that used shuttles to introduce people to the dinos. Now, it's a 1/4 mile-long walk-through experience with 52 dinos rather than 40.

To make things as realistic as possible, the Bronx Zoo teamed up with a paleontologist from the American Museum of Natural History—Don Lessem even served as an advisor on the original  Jurassic Park ! The experience is topped off with an ADA-accessible fossil dig area for kids to play in, plus some additional dino-themed activities around the zoo.   All ages.

Bronx, NY – April 12, 2022 – Some of the largest animals that ever roamed the Earth have returned and are now on exhibit at the Bronx Zoo. The Dinosaur Safari is back with MORE dinosaurs than ever before in a new experience that will immerse visitors in a recreation of a world that disappeared millions of years ago.

This is the first time the Bronx Zoo has featured its popular Dinosaur Safari since 2019 and there are some exciting changes for the 2022 season. For the first time, the immersive exhibit is a ¼ mile-long walkthrough experience covering more than 2 acres of hardwood forest. It features 52 life-sized animatronic dinosaurs and pterosaurs that move and roar in an accurate depiction of what life looked like in pre-historic times.

Dinosaur Safari adventurers will be awed by some of the largest animals ever to walk the face of the Earth. Storied beasts like the 40-foot-long Tyrannosaurus rex , a favorite species in popular culture that was the apex predator in its time; the lesser-known Omeisaurus , an herbivore that spans more than 60 feet head-to-tail and towers over the safari trail; and the new Quetzalcoatlus , the largest known pterosaur ever to live will all highlight the diversity of life that existed 100 million years ago.

“Dinosaur species evolved and adapted physically and behaviorally to their environments in much the same way as species we see today.” said Jim Breheny, Bronx Zoo Director. “Guests visiting the Bronx Zoo today are encouraged to compare dinosaur adaptations to some of their modern-day descendants - like birds. We are celebrating the 50 th anniversary of the zoo’s iconic World of Birds building in 2022 and take the opportunity to see how a wide variety of avian species from around the world have evolved to survive and thrive in different habitats.”

This limited engagement is now open to the public and will operate daily through October 31, 2022. Access to Dinosaur Safari is included in the Bronx Zoo Admission Ticket and is free for Zoos PLUS; Land & Sea; and Conservation-level members. For tickets, more information about Dinosaur Safari at the Bronx Zoo, and a full list of daily activities, visit www.BronxZoo.com .

Dinosaur Safari is presented by Bank of America.

“Bank of America’s sponsorship of the Bronx Zoo’s Dinosaur Safari reflects our commitment to supporting cultural programs that enrich our communities,” said José Tavarez, President, Bank of America New York City. “We applaud the Bronx Zoo’s innovative efforts to keep us connected to the natural world – especially these prehistoric marvels – while continuing their work to protect the environment, a cause close to our hearts.”

The dinosaurs featured in the Bronx Zoo’s Dinosaur Safari were created by Dino Don, Inc – an international leader in the design and construction of animatronic robotic dinosaurs.

You’ll see 40 animatronic dinos at the Bronx Zoo’s ‘Dinosaur Safari’ ride

' src=

Forty animatronic dinosaurs are calling the Bronx home for the next seven months as they star in what the Bronx Zoo says is the “biggest, most realistic dinosaur ride in America.”

Dinosaur Safari, which opens April 19, takes zoo visitors on a wagon ride through two acres of woods that have been transformed into a prehistoric habitat where 18 dinosaur species and one flying reptile (the azhdarchid pterosaur) are fighting to survive.

The narrated experience, which runs roughly 15 minutes, encourages riders to “think like a paleontologist” as they watch dinosaurs battle each other, care for their young and snack on plants.

Two T. rexes battle in the Dinosaur Safari exhibit at the Bronx Zoo.

All of the dinosaurs move, triggered by motion detectors, roar and often look right at the passersby.

“If you look at them closely, you try to figure out how they move and how they’re put together,” said Jim Breheny, the zoo’s director and the Wildlife Conservation Society’s executive vice president of Zoos and Aquarium. “But you can’t because they really look like they’re living animals.”

The zoo teamed up with a paleontologist and “Dino” Don Lessem, a dinosaur expert who has written science books and even served as an adviser on the original “Jurassic Park” film.

A Maiasaura tends to her offspring at the Dinosaur Safari at the Bronx Zoo.

The zoo even made “tens of thousands” of plantings, from tropical greenery to more primordial-looking tree ferns and cycads to “create the illusion of dinosaur paradise,” Breheny said.

The narrator, who names and points out each species, describes what each one is doing and how their behavior or attributes are similar to modern-day animals, like how  T. rexes fought each other like gorillas do — most likely for dominance, territory or mating rights.

In a field guide that each “paleontologist” gets, each dinosaur species is described and compared with a living animal, which you can visit in the zoo’s other exhibits.

An Omeisaurus "watches" from above at the Dinosaur Safari at the Bronx Zoo.

But at the heart of the ride is the hope it will inspire people to care about the extinction of animals.

“When people think about zoos, they think about live animals, so when we were going to do this dinosaur exhibit, we thought about what the connection was between live animals we care for at the Bronx Zoo,” Breheny said. “If these magnificent dinosaurs that roamed the earth millions of years ago and they’re so powerful and so majestic and they look like they rule the earth — if animals and species like this were susceptible to extinction, we have to be doubly concerned about the animals that we have now. Some of them are nowhere near as formidable as the T-rex, but they’re still susceptible to the negative impacts of human activities around the world. That’s what the Bronx Zoo and WCS try to do to figure out a way people and animals can live together and share the earth.”

Once the ride ends, visitors, now seasoned paleontologists, will be able to go on a fossil dig and enjoy dinosaur-themed activities through the zoo, including “Birds in Flight,” a show where you meet birds with very dinosaur-like features.

If you go: The ride will run through Nov. 3 and is included in the zoo’s "Total Experience" ticket that can be purchased online at  bronxzoo.com  for $39.95 and $29.95 for children.

How to get there: Take the BxM11, Bx9, Bx19 bus routes straight to the zoo or the Q44 to 180th Street and Boston Road (then take a right on Boston Road one block to the Bronx Zoo’s Asia gate entrance). Otherwise, take the 2 train to Pelham Parkway and head west to the Zoo’s Bronx River entrance.

New and Exciting Opportunities Await at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium This Summer

By: jen fields, director of communications, may 28 2024.

Powell, OH — Experience something new this summer at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium! From welcoming adorable new faces to enjoying memorable wildlife adventures, there are many options available that make the Columbus Zoo a fun and impactful destination.

NEW ANIMALS

The Columbus Zoo has celebrated several significant births this year! Guests can look forward to seeing some of these new faces throughout the Zoo this season.

Shores & Aquarium region

  • Desert grassland whiptail lizard hatchlings. Three whiptail lizards hatched on January 20, which also earned them the distinction of being the first hatchings at the Zoo in 2024! Whiptail lizards, known for their elongated bodies and whip-like tails, are found mainly in the Americas. Their unique reproductive behavior allows them to reproduce by parthenogenesis (meaning their eggs develop into embryos without fertilization from a mate), which is why this all-female species is commonly nicknamed the “lesbian lizard.” Guests can view the whiptail lizards in the Zoo’s Reptile Building.
  • Green basilisk hatchlings. In an exciting first for the Columbus Zoo, three green basilisks hatched in February. The green basilisk lizard, also known as the plumed basilisk, is famed for its ability to run on water, earning it the nickname the "Jesus Christ lizard." This remarkable adaptation allows the basilisk to escape predators by sprinting across the surface of ponds and streams. Found primarily in the rainforests of Central America, the green basilisk plays a crucial role as both predator and prey, contributing to a healthy ecosystem. The hatchlings are currently being cared for behind the scenes in the Reptile Building, and guests can look forward to seeing them in their habitat later this summer.
  • Humboldt penguin chicks. The Zoo’s Humboldt penguin grew by two male chicks in March! The chicks are being fostered and are doing well after a challenging start. Both chicks were malpositioned within their eggs, but, with the help of the Zoo’s Animal Care and Animal Health teams who assisted with the hatch, the babies have been reunited with their foster parents, Ava and Gunter, and Tressel and Watson. While their parents care for them, the chicks will remain behind the scenes. They will soon be starting “Penguin Preschool” to learn “all things penguin” before being introduced to the outdoor habitat this summer.

Heart of Africa region

  • Slender-horned gazelle calves. Two slender-horned gazelle calves were welcomed into the Columbus Zoo’s herd in February—a male named Sasquatch and a female named Nessie. Slender-horned gazelles are classified as Endangered by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The species’ range is highly fragmented across North Africa, where isolated populations consist of very small numbers in each location. Slender-horned gazelle populations in their native range continue to decline due to poaching and human activity, and the IUCN estimates that only a few hundred remain, making these births particularly significant. Guests have the opportunity to spot the adorable calves exploring the Heart of Africa savanna with the rest of their herd.
  • Dama gazelle calf. Just before St. Patrick’s Day, a male dama gazelle was born into the herd. Appropriately named Patrick, the calf is providing hope for the future of his species—the rarest of all gazelles. Dama gazelles are critically endangered, and there are fewer than 300 dama gazelles left in their native range. Patrick is thriving and will soon be in the Heart of Africa savanna, which he will share with mom, Kix, dad, Kabili, and other species, including the slender-horned gazelle family. (He is already good friends with Sasquatch and Nessie!)

Congo Expedition region

  • Mandrill baby. Mandrill Malaika gave birth to a healthy baby on May 5! The new male baby joins half-sister Izara and big brother Bernard, who is very curious of his little brother. Dad, Mosi, and “Aunt” Matilda watch them from nearby. Baby mandrills are independent primates that nurse, sleep and — when allowed by their mothers — will begin to move off their mothers for brief periods to explore within days of birth. Mandrills are the largest of all monkeys, and are native to rainforests along the equator in west central Africa. The species is classified as Vulnerable by the IUCN.

Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).

Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).

UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .
