Why go on safari with Asili Explorer Safaris?

What can i expect from a safari in tanzania.

A perfect safari day begins with a lovely early morning rise with African savannah sounds. After a strong, healthy breakfast, you head out in a safari vehicle with your personal driver. This is THE Best Times to Visit  and exploring  Savannah.  You go on exploring the wild until just before sunset, when you’ll stop for the famous safari sundowner.   Then it’s dinner and off to bed early since around sunrise the next morning it all starts again.

Don’t settle for anything less than the best when it comes to exploring Tanzania’s wildlife. Choose Asili Explorer as your safari tour operator and embark on an extraordinary journey that will leave you with memories to last a lifetime.

What sort of hotel can I expect on a safari?

As a general rule you can say the higher your safari prices, the better your hotel. At the lower end, campsites are usually basic, sometimes crowded and not always in the best locations within the national parks with nice tented camps, including mobile camps, you’ll sleep in large, walk-in tents – they’re like lodge rooms in terms of size but with canvas for walls and floor.

What people love about African Safaris

The Intrepid travel Road to Zanzibar was absolutely fantastic. The organisation of the whole trip was very good. I would highly recommend.
A bit late with the review... The trip was November 2019 and it was the best trip ever!!! Simon best guide, stunning places, welcoming locals and amazing experiences! the flight over the Okavango Delta is highly recommended.
Great trip, solid tour guides and very fun group. Pre trip instructions were unclear and difficult to locate. Flying into Nairobi was unnecessary; the trip could have started in Arusha.

"The tour is a very complete experience. in both Soain and Portugal you cover the essentials of each city with the tour guides but also have time to explore on your own. In Morocco, the itinerary covered all the must dos (Marrakech, Fez and the dessert) with lots of other interesting destinations in between. The tour is very high paced, with sometimes late nights and early mornings, which allows you to make the most of each day and cover a lot. You also get to meet people from all around the world, with around 50 people in each group you’re part of and travel with. All in all, I considered it a wonderful experience

The African Explorer, as a rolling hotel, offers sleeping compartments in two categories, two air-conditioned restaurant cars, a bar car and a lounge car with panorama windows and an open platform at the end. The tempting three-course dinners are served in one sitting. The bar car, with inexpensive tariff, is open around the clock is ideal for relaxing over a beer or a glass of South African wine and is a popular spot for reading as well as the venue for the fascinating on board talks.

There is no formal dress code on your private train and smart evening dress is not required. A laundry service is available during the entire trip. Large pieces of luggage can be stowed beneath the berths or on the upper luggage racks. However, since on-board space is limited, we do recommend taking soft bags rather suitcases.  For your comfort and safety a doctor is on board throughout the journey.

Enjoy your first evening on board and dinner.

Day 3. On board

A day n board –  travel the whole day through South Africa’s diverse landscapes and enjoy the informative lectures on board.

Day 4. Augrabies National Park In the afternoon we arrive in Upington and take an excursion to Augrabies National Park with its famous water falls.  In the early evening we return to the train and continue northbound.

Day 5. Fish River Canyon Arrival in Holoog in the morning. The Fish River Canyon, today’s highlight, is the second largest canyon in the world! Climb aboard one of the air-conditioned buses and enjoy the stunning views. There is also a chance to take a short walk along the canyon’s edge. In the afternoon your train journey continues and you have the chance to attend a Biltong (traditional beef jerky) tasting session.

Day 6. Ghost Town Morning arrival in Aus station. Today’s programme begins with a bus ride to the ghost town of Kolmanskop, where the first diamonds were found in Namibia in 1908. From here, the harbour town of Lüderitz is a short journey through the Sperrgebiet (the “Restricted Diamond Area”). After crossing the historical Lüderitz peninsula, you reach the next highlight of the day – Diaz Point, set against the backdrop of the dramatic Atlantic waves. Back on board at Aus station, your private train continues on its journey south.

Overnight on board. (B,D)

Day 7. Namib Naukluft National Park In the morning, arrival in Mariental, where buses will transfer you to your lodges. You will stop in the small village of Maltahöhe for a tasty brunch – complete with delicious freshly baked bread! Overnight: Namib Desert Lodge (or similar). (B,D)

Day 8. The Highest Sand Dunes in the World Early morning is the best time to see the giant dunes of the Namib. Climbing a dune may be quite tough, but the panoramic view from the top over a sea of apricot-coloured sand is reward enough! Open-top vehicles take you the last few kilometres along an unpaved sandy track to the Vlei, a salt-clay sink surrounded by sand dunes. On the way, you may well be fortunate enough to see oryx antelopes and springboks. As the sun sets, enjoy a romantic journey through the stunning desert landscape.

Overnight: Namib Desert Lodge (or similar). (B,D)

Day 9. Walvis Bay and Swakopmund After breakfast, your air-conditioned buses are waiting to take you to Walvis Bay where, with luck, you can see flocks of flamingos and pelicans. The tour through the Namib Naukluft National Park by bus takes about 5 hours. In Swakopmund your private train awaits you.

Day 10. Spitzkoppe In the early morning your train leaves Swakopmund. We make a stop at Usakos for an excursion to the granite peaks known as the “Spitzkoppe”.  A visit to a local school (except in the school holidays) provides an insight into the everyday life of children from the Damara people. Back on board, your train continues towards Otjiwarongo.

Day 11. Etosha National Park Explore the wonders of the Etosha National Park. Your air-conditioned buses cross the entire park – a chance to see elephants, gnus and other wild animals close up on the journey. The Etosha Pan, an extremely flat salt pan, lies at the heart of the National Park. This shimmering “great white place”, as its name says, is the largest salt pan in Africa – and with herds of wild animals passing through, an unforgettable experience! This exciting day ends with an overnight stay in a comfortable lodge nearby.

Overnight: Mokuti Lodge (or similar). (B,D)

Day 12. On Safari In the morning, enjoy an extensive safari drive before carrying on to Otjiwarongo where your private train is waiting for you. Your journey continues to Windhoek. In the evening you enjoy an African Braai (BBQ) at the tracks under a marvellous starry sky.

Day 13. Windhoek With that proverbial little bit of luck, your journey will be a train safari. This unique route passes through various private game farms where giraffes, antelopes and ostriches are often visible right from the train window! After arrival in Windhoek, we have a city tour which includes the neo-Gothic Christ Church and the Tintenpalast, literally the “Ink Palace”, which houses the Namibian parliament. After that, you will visit the township Katutura and a local market. You will be transferred to your hotel (for 1 night) before a farewell dinner will be served in a special restaurant.

Overnight: AVANI Windhoek Hotel & Casino (or similar). (B,L,D)

Day 14. Goodbye Namibia According to your flights, transfer to the airport for your flight back home. (B)

Safaris aren't the only tourist attraction in Africa. From cruises to wine tasting, here's what else you can do

A frica is blessed with some of the rarest and most beautiful animals in the world — a fact that entices tourists to book safaris year-round.

But safaris only scratch the surface of what the continent has to offer.

From wine tours to vibrant coastal cities, other experiences await those who are willing to go beyond game drives and delve deeper into the core of the continent.

Mountains, dunes and rivers

For those who love hiking, Africa is blessed with many peaks — from Morocco's Mount Toubkal to the continent's highest peak, Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania.

But there's also Mount Nyangani in Zimbabwe, which has a skywalk atop the Mutarazi Falls, the country's highest waterfall.

South Africa's Table Mountain can be climbed in a matter of hours, but adrenaline junkies may prefer to bungie jump from Johannesburg's Soweto Towers , or the Bloukrans Bridge along the country's famous "Garden Route."

Africa is ideal for travelers who crave adventure, said Zina Bencheikh, managing director for Europe, the Middle East and Africa at Intrepid Travel.

She recommends Madagascar's Tsingy de Bemaraha National Park, which has two geological zones called the "Small Tsingy" and "Big Tsingy," which in the local language of Malagasy, refers to a place "where one cannot walk barefoot."

"Big Tsingy Trek is not your usual hike!" she said, describing it as a "labyrinth of limestone formations that resemble a forest made of rock."

In Namibia, travelers can climb the iconic Dune 45 to admire the sand dunes of the Sossusvlei, explore the eerie white clay pan of Deadvlei , or hike through the picturesque Sesriem Canyon.

At Victoria Falls, along the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe, travelers can whitewater raft, bungee jump or swim at the Devil's Pool, which is on Zambia's side of the falls. Similar adventures can be found in Jinja, Uganda, where the River Nile begins.

Hot air balloons are a popular and adventurous way to explore too, with a bird's eye view of the berber villages of Morocco to Kenya's Masai Mara.

Explore the beach

African beach towns combine beauty and culture, in places like Seychelles, Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa, Mozambique, Mauritius, Zanzibar, Ghana, Namibia and Egypt.

Mombasa, a coastal city in Kenya, is one example.

"Here, you'll experience African, Indian and Arab cultures in one place. Fort Jesus is one of Mombasa's notable sites and was built by the Portuguese in 1593. In less than 200 years, the fort changed hands nine times," said Luciemarie Swanepoel, owner of African Sky of Diamonds Tours & Safaris.

She recommends visiting Zanzibar to wander the Stone Town's labyrinthine alleys along with Kenya's Swahili Coast, the historical Gede ruins, and the UNESCO-named Mijikenda Kaya Forests .

"Madagascar … is another island gem, with beaches like Nosy Be and Ile Sainte Marie boasting palm-fringed coasts and vibrant coastal villages," said Swanepoel.

Durban and Cape Town are two of the best beach destinations in South Africa, she said, adding that travelers can kitesurf, snorkel, kayak or search for dugongs and whales there.

Go on a cruise

From budget-friendly houseboats to luxurious all-inclusive boutique lake cruises, Africa has a range of unique boating experiences.

Cruises along the Nile, Zambezi and Chobe rivers, as well as a cruise along Rwanda's Lake Kivu, come highly recommended, as water journeys can offer a spectacular viewing platform for wildlife.

"During a river cruise, you may spot a herd of elephants wading through shimmering water, witness great buffalo gathering along the water's edge, and even observe crocodiles stealthily slicing through pools. Hundreds of hippos also wallow in the river with just their nostrils poking out," says Kate Powell, general manager of the houseboat company Zambezi Queen Collection.

Travelers can also cruise between villages, fish, and bask in the tranquil waters.

"One can explore the Manambolo River on a pirogue, or wooden dugout canoe, under the shadow of towering rock cliffs [or] stop to explore a cave and the eerie tombs of the Vazimba, said to be the earliest inhabitants of Madagascar," said Intrepid's Bencheikh.

In addition to being a popular stop for world cruises, East and South Africa have their own ocean cruise routes which follow the coastlines and visit offshore islands. Silversea, Norwegian Cruise Line and MSC have cruises departing from Africa.

The best places — and best times — to take a safari

Maritime journeys in Africa allow visitors to experience the continent's wildlife, cultures and landscapes from a unique vantage point, said Kevin Bubolz, Norwegian's vice president for Continental Europe, Middle East and Africa.

"In Port Elizabeth, the Penguin Island Cruise excursion is a standout experience. You'll journey to the world's largest colony of African penguins in their natural habitat," he said. "If you're lucky, you might also catch a glimpse of playful humpback and bottle-nose dolphins."

Countries like Morocco, Namibia and Ethiopia have established wine regions. But South Africa is the continent's crown jewel.

"South Africa is renowned for its world-class wine regions, with the Western Cape being the heart of the industry," said Wrenelle Stander, CEO of Wesgro, Cape Town's tourism and trade agency.

"The areas around Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Paarl comprise the famous Cape Winelands, where visitors can tour historic estates, taste award-winning wines, and learn about the winemaking process."

Not only is Stellenbosch one of the best places for wine tours, it's also a culinary hot spot, known for its innovative food scene. Elmarie Rabe, the marketing manager at Visit Stellenbosch, advises travelers to select wineries that are committed to sustainable and organic practices.

"Also consider the traveling distance between farms, as Stellenbosch stretches over 60 square kilometers," she said.

The best time to visit is during the harvest season from late January to March, when the vineyards are in full swing. But every season has its own charm, she added.

"Spring offers lush landscapes and ideal weather, while winter is perfect for enjoying bold red wines by the fireplace. Summer provides sunny days perfect for outdoor wine tasting," Rabe said.

The Top 5 Safari Tours You Need to Experience in 2023

If you’re looking for an adventure of a lifetime, there’s no better way to do it than by going on an african safari..

Southern and East Africa’s top destinations – Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa, Botswana and others – are home to some of the most amazing wildlife on the planet, and there’s nothing quite like getting up close and personal with these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat.

explorer safari tours

When it comes to choosing a safari tour, there are a few things you need to consider. First, what time of year do you want to go? The best time to see the animals is during the dry season (generally from June to October), when the vegetation is not as thick, and the animals congregate around waterholes. Second, how long do you want to go for? We recommend at least four days on safari if you’re combining your trip with a city or beach stay, but if you’re doing a full safari, then anything from 5 to 10 days is ideal. And finally, what kind of tour do you want to go on?

Here are our top five picks for safari tours in 2023:

1. The Classic African Safari Experience

This is the safari tour for those who want to see it all. From lions and elephants to giraffes and zebras, you’ll get to see all the iconic African animals up close and personal. And of course, no safari would be complete without staying in a luxury lodge or tented camp under the stars. We are experts in planning the classic African safari, whether it’s a land-and-water-based experience in Botswana, a tented safari in Kenya or Tanzania, or a luxury lodge in the Sabi Sands.

2. A Walking Safari

For those who really want to get away from it all, a walking safari is the perfect choice. You’ll spend your days exploring the bush on foot, led by an experienced guide who will teach you all about the plants and animals you encounter along the way. At night, you’ll sleep in a simple tent or under the stars, surrounded by nothing but the sounds of nature. Walking safaris are most popular in South Africa’s Kruger National Park , as well as in Zambia’s Kafue and South Luangwa National Parks . Depending on your fitness level, we can easily recommend the ideal length of your safari.

3. A Photographic Safari

This type of tour is perfect for amateur photographers or anyone who wants to improve their skills. Led by a professional photographer, you’ll spend your days tracking down that perfect shot of Africa’s Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo), as well as special moments – a bird flying overhead, a flick of an impala’s ear, a dung beetle struggling with his load. You’ll also get tips on how to capture those magical moments so that you can relive them long after your trip is over.

explorer safari tours

4. A Cultural Safari

If you’re interested in learning about African culture and history, this is the tour for you. You’ll visit traditional villages and households, where you’ll learn about everyday life and meet some of the local people. You’ll also get plenty of opportunities to try traditional foods and participate in local ceremonies and dances. We support community-based safaris and accommodation in Africa that ensure their local community are made a significant part of the operational and sustainable aspects of what they do.

5. A Luxury Safari

For those who want nothing but the best, a luxury safari is the way to go. You’ll spend your days relaxing in luxurious accommodation, being pampered with world-class service, and enjoying gourmet meals prepared by top chefs. When you’re not enjoying the amenities at your lodge or camp, you’ll be out on game drives or walking safaris led by experienced guides who will share their knowledge of Africa’s wildlife with you. Top spots for a luxury safari include South Africa’s Kruger Park and Sabi Sands, Botswana’s Okavango Delta (we recommend Xigera Safari Lodge), and various exceptional properties in the Masai Mara and the Serengeti.

explorer safari tours

If you’re looking for some safari tour destination inspiration, here are a few of our top recommended places to visit in 2023 for your African adventure :

1. Tanzania

If you want to see the Big Five animals, Tanzania is the place to go. The Serengeti National Park is one of the best places in Africa to see lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo. And don’t forget about Mount Kilimanjaro — the tallest mountain in Africa — which provides a stunning backdrop to your Tanzania safari tour. Plus, the Serengeti is the base of the annual Wildebeest Migration.

explorer safari tours

2. Kenya

Kenya is another great option for seeing the Big Five. The Masai Mara offers some of the most spectacular game-viewing on the planet, especially between July and August when the river crossings occur during the migration. However, Amboseli National Park is also a top destination for us – large elephant herds are seen daily, and spectacular views of Kili can be enjoyed.

explorer safari tours

3. Botswana

If you’re looking for a more relaxed safari experience, Botswana is the perfect destination. Home to the Okavango Delta — the world’s largest inland delta — Botswana offers a unique safari experience where you can see animals like hippos and elephants up close while cruising through the waterways on a traditional mokoro boat. Hop over to Chobe National Park for amazing river boating, and some of the largest elephant herds in Africa.

explorer safari tours

4. Zambia

Zambia is home to some of Africa’s most iconic animals, including lions, leopards, elephants, and buffalo. It’s considered more of an off-the-beaten-track destination, but this is a drawcard for those who are looking for something wilder and more spectacular. It’s also home to Victoria Falls—one of the Seven Wonders of the World — which makes for a truly unforgettable safari experience.

explorer safari tours

5. South Africa

Finally, South Africa is an excellent safari destination for first-timers or those looking for a more budget-friendly option. Other than the flagship Kruger Park, there are malaria-free and family-friendly safaris to be enjoyed in the Eastern Cape and Madikwe Game Reserves. Plus, South Africa is home to some of the best wine country in the world — so you can enjoy a glass or two after a long day of game drives!

No matter what type of safari tour you’re looking for, there’s sure to be one that’s perfect for you. So, what are you waiting for? Start planning your 2023 African safari today. Our experienced team of expert safari Travel Planners will gladly assist with whatever concern or query you may have.

Moscow Nightlife Unchanged Despite Ukraine Conflict

  • Order Reprints
  • Print Article

The Kremlin has been doing everything to ensure that hostilities have as little impact as possible on the daily lives of Muscovites

At a trendy restaurant in central Moscow, Russian data analyst Alexandra awaited her dessert, determined to carry on as usual despite the conflict in neighbouring Ukraine.

Her friend returned with a glass of red wine and then they went bar hopping in the Russian capital, around 600 kilometres (370 miles) from fighting that has been raging for more than two years.

"Even during the Second World War, women continued to put on makeup and buy lipstick," said the 32-year-old, declining to give her surname.

"This shows that we should continue living... We go out and have a good time," she added, smiling.

Whether due to patriotism, caution or indifference, 10 Muscovites interviewed by AFP asserted their right to a "normal" life despite the conflict and escalating tensions between Moscow and the West.

They avoided directly addressing Russia's offensive on Ukraine, that Moscow calls a "special military operation".

Russia has criminalised criticism of the conflict and arrested and detained thousands since February 2022, when it ordered troops across the border.

Alexandra said the atmosphere in Moscow is "the same as before" the conflict began.

"People go for walks, get to know each other, enjoy themselves, live, work and go about their lives. In that respect, nothing has changed," she said.

Behind her, a crowd of young people, glasses in hand, were chatting, drinking and eating at Moscow's "Central Market" -- a three-storey establishment full of chic bars and food stalls.

It is a different scene from Kyiv, some 750 kilometres away.

Although the Ukrainian capital has retained some form of nightlife, those frequenting bars and restaurants have been forced to grow accustomed to night curfews, air raid sirens, soldiers marshalling the streets, as well as missile and drone strikes.

In the heart of the city, Moscow's famed Bolshoi Theatre was sold out for a performance of Verdi's opera La Traviata that evening.

"Why shouldn't we go there?" asked 49-year-old nanny Anna Savyolova.

She, too, drew a parallel with World War II, known in Russia as the Great Patriotic War.

"I know that artists came, performed, supported the soldiers... Life doesn't stop!" she said.

Pastry chef Diana Kitayeva, 28, had been dreaming of visiting the Bolshoi for years. "Why not treat yourself?" she said.

Accompanied by her mother, 14-year-old Alexandra Pomoshnikova said she saw art as an escape, in order to "not panic too much".

Despite tens of thousands of deaths on the Russian side -- the authorities do not provide an exact toll -- the Kremlin has been doing everything to ensure that hostilities have as little impact as possible on the daily lives of Muscovites.

Russia's forced mobilisation of more than 300,000 young men in 2022 also had little effect on the capital. The majority of recruits came from poorer regions, far away from big cities.

In Victory Day celebrations on May 9, a major public holiday that Russia uses to commemorate veterans and showcase its military prowess, no wounded soldiers were visible on Red Square.

Funerals of soldiers in the capital are low-key affairs, with little or no official fanfare for the fallen men Russian officials portray -- enthusiastically and often -- as "heroes".

Posters inviting Russians to enlist or praising the courage of soldiers are the most visible reminder of the fighting Moscow unleashed next-door in Ukraine.

The continued presence of Western brands, often under licencing agreements established before 2022, reinforces an appearance of normality -- a visual challenge to the notion of an irreparable cultural, political and economic rift between Russia and the West.

But the conflict in Ukraine has not been entirely painless for Moscow residents. Rising prices, a direct result of Western sanctions and the government's high spending on the offensive, is one of their primary concerns.

After soaring to nearly 20 percent in the spring of 2022, annual inflation remains at almost eight percent, according to official statistics.

The upscale clientele of Moscow's Central Market used to pay about six dollars for a cocktail.

"Now it costs 200 rubles ($2.20) more," said Bogdan Vorobyov, 24, who was out for beers with friends.

The conflict has also affected the lifestyle of Muscovites in other ways.

Trying to get around the city centre using Yandex Maps, the country's main navigation app, has become a headache. Following drone attacks on the Russian capital in May last year, satellite signals in Moscow's centre have been partially jammed, making GPS tracking spotty and unpredictable.

Alexandra summed up the general feel of the city with the help of a phrase that has become a go-to for Russians over the last 30 years.

"I've gotten used to living in times of crisis."
