In early April 2022, we looked at a strange and misleading online advertisement that claimed, "Always Keep A Bread Clip In Your Wallet When Traveling, Here's Why." With the inclusion of the word "always," the ad appeared to indicate that all travelers need to know about a purported tip involving keeping a bread clip in their wallet. However, we soon found that this was little more than clickbait.

The only reason we found to keep a bread clip in a wallet that resulted from these kinds of ads was to fix a plug on the bottom of a flip flop or sandal.

We found remnants of this ad in a Google search that led to a picture of a bread bag clip on Pinterest. Both have been combined in the image below:

Two other versions of the ad simply said, "Always Keep A Bread Clip In Your Wallet," omitting the "when traveling" part:

After digging around online, we found an ad that was active on Facebook . It read, "Put A Bread Clip In Your Wallet When Traveling, Here's Why."

The Facebook ad led to a 90-page slideshow article. Deep into the story, one of the pages simply advised carrying a bread clip in a wallet in case a plug on the bottom of a flip flop or sandal needed to be fixed. We found an old tweet that referenced the same idea. (According to this logic, it's better to purposely buy a poorly-made pair of flip flops while carrying a bread clip in a wallet than it is to buy a decent pair of flip flops for a few extra dollars.)

The flip flop tip was less a helpful trick and more just a way of filling up an article to justify the original ad. This is referred to in the advertising industry as arbitrage .

The other 89 pages in the article offered no other tips about travelers keeping bread clips in a wallet.

However, the crayon article was also little more than misleading and silly clickbait.

Aside from all of these reasons, we stumbled upon a camping tip in a YouTube video that involved bread clips. We found the idea from an article on Lifehacker.com. It could perhaps be considered a handy trick for a small number of travelers who are out camping and forgot clothespins for hanging and drying their clothes:

'Always' in Other Ads

In the past, we've reported on ads that used the word "always" and appeared to offer safety tips for drivers. For example, one claimed , "Always Put a Plastic Bottle On Your Tires When Parked, Here’s Why." Another said , "Always Place Coca-Cola On Your Wheels When Traveling Alone, Here’s Why." It's possible that there's a version of the bread clip ad going around with the word "alone" that's worded as, "Always Keep A Bread Clip In Your Wallet When Traveling Alone." We have found multiple variations of these kinds of ads before.

We also covered other ads that used the words "always" and referenced people traveling and staying in hotels. For example, one claimed , "Why You Should Always Put a Towel Under Hotel Door." Another said , "Here’s Why Hotel Guests Should Always Put Coins in the Sink."

In sum, no, we found no reason why people should be on alert and think about keeping a bread clip in a wallet when traveling.

Snopes debunks a wide range of content, and online advertisements are no exception. Misleading ads often lead to obscure websites that host lengthy slideshow articles with lots of pages. Weekly Travel Hack: Fix a Busted Sandal with a Bread Clip

Welcome to this week’s edition of the Weekly Travel Hack. Last week we learned how to fix our backpack with dental floss .  This week we are going to learn to fix something just as sacred to a backpacker, their beloved sandals, and all we need is a bread clip. 

It is well known that the relationship between backpackers and sandals go back to prehistoric times. There are even cave paintings of Neanderthals attacking wooly mammoths whilst wearing sandals (I made that up for effect but who knows it could be true?).  There is no doubting what a priceless commodity a good sandal can be to a backpacker in a warm climate, ask anyone in Southeast Asia.

Sometimes though, actually every time,  sandals wear out and bust and it is never ever at a convenient time.  In many parts of the world you can’t simply walk around the corner and get a new pair of sandals. So now that you got a flat tire what are you going to do?

Luckily for you this weeks Travel Hack has the answer.  The modern age has brought us the convenient store and those my friend exist in more places than you can ever imagine. And an item you can easily find in a convenient store, or even a store shack on the side of a dirt road,  or maybe even in the trash, is a bread clip that can temporarily fix you sandal.

All that you have to do is pull the strap of you sandal back through the bottom of the sole where it busted out.

Once it is through the bottom you attach the bread clip above the nub that is no longer holding the strap into place.  The clip acts like a nub extension and BLAMO! you’ve fixed your sandal or at least fixed it for a long enough time to find a place to buy new sandals.

Also, bread clips are tiny, can fit in your wallet even, and if you are a hardcore sandal wearer having one on you is like having a spare tire for your car.

Although we most often bake our own or purchase locally baked plastic-free bread from our local baker, there is the occasional store-bought bread that comes in a plastic bag (recyclable at most grocery stores, if clean) with a hard plastic clip to keep it shut. These clips might also make their appearance on produce bags. Some call them bag clips, others bag tags. They’re made of hard plastic and as of yet we know of only one address in the US where you can send them, where they’re stockpiled and sold to help wheelchairs get to South Africa where they’re needed. So, if you’ve collected them over the years, please send them to this address here.

Did you know that over 20 cases of accidental ingestion of plastic bag clips have been published? The incidence are so detrimental to health that a team of researchers have classified in the  Briti sh Medical Journal “morphology” chart the many varieties of bag clips, in an effort to determine which ones are most dangerous to the digestive tract and which designs are more benign.  Don’t swallow them, or you might become yet another statistic for this study.

We do have a few bread clips saved in some drawers, mostly for reuse. Here are a few of the ways we’ve used them in our home?

1) Reuse to seal other bags (yep, it’s obvious but I had to list it so you don’t throw them away.) We store our bread in a bread box, to keep it plastic-free. But, occasionally we’ll need to pack it in plastic when we go camping. Bread clips come in handy then.

2) Label your spare keys with them!

3) Place on the end of tape, like duct tape and masking tape, so you don’t have to spend time peeling the tape off itself.

4) Use them as earbud tamers to store those earbuds and prevent the inevitable tangles.

5) Use them as counter scrapers for hard-to -scrape -off crud. Same for pots and pans.

6) Use to hold together all your rubber bands in your everything drawer.

7) Make a cool cereal box and bread clip abacus by following this tutorial provided by Almost Unschoolers !

8) Use your bread clips to organize and label your desk and entertainment cables .

9) Make bread clip monsters like these at Crafts by Amanda .

Oh you’ve gone to all this trouble and I am sitting here all smug and smiley because I can honestly say these never (or better say rarely just to be safe) step over the threshold of our house 😉 If we ever buy bread in an emergency, it is usually the fresh baked kind or if it’s something like crumpets, they are in a sealed cellophane pack. I’m with you, Chris. Our children have a love for what we call “English muffins” over here, which are basically crumpets. They’re locally made and sometimes they come in a bag with a bread clip. We also get emergency crumpets when we camp, so now I have a little pile of these things. Arghhhh!!!!!
