a drawing of a face

We had a delightful time with Captain Curt. He was friendly and answered all questions. We didn't feel rushed or hurried at all. We had a great afternoon and family outing. I highly recommend this excursion.

Captain Russ is spectacular. He is an amazing captain with a great personality. Captain Russ made my family feel at home out on the water. Thank you for creating a fabulous memory for my family.

Loved it, we had a 3 hour daytime private sail with Russ. We were able to sit on the front of the boat and got to relax together. Would recommend for anyone looking for a private experience or a COVID-safe experience.

We took an afternoon sail on the Puget Sound. We hardly sailed because the wind did not cooperate but the experience was still wonderful. Russ was attentive and full of interesting facts about the Puget Sound and the locations we saw along our cruise. I highly recommend this experience. You will not be disappointed. Thanks Russ!

Captain Russ was great. Very mellow afternoon, no set agenda. Boat was very nice, stable. If you are looking for a way to get out of town and enjoy something cozy with your family this is a great option. Thanks

Thoroughly enjoyed our time sailing. Russ was a knowledgeable and friendly captain! Highly recommend this experience while in Seattle.

The 4 best seattle boat tours.

The Best Seattle Boat Tours

After exploring Seattle on land, snap photos of its skyline from a boat.

There's no better way to admire the stunning Seattle waterfront than from a boat. A variety of boat tours – from kid-friendly sightseeing cruises to romantic sunset sails – allow visitors to take in all the sights while enjoying a fresh sea breeze. Relying on expert input and traveler sentiment, U.S. News compiled four of the best Seattle boat tours.

Argosy Cruises – Locks Cruise

Price: Adults from $54; kids from $25 Duration: 2 hours

Enjoy the unique experience of passing through the Ballard Locks on this two-hour, one-way cruise. As you transition from the freshwater of Lake Union to the saltwater of Puget Sound, you'll hear live narration about Seattle's history and maritime industry from an onboard guide. Along the way, you'll pass some of the Emerald City's top sights, including the Space Needle , Olympic Sculpture Park and Gas Works Park, among others. Note that the cruise is one way, meaning it ends at a different location than it starts. You'll be dropped off at Pier 54 on the Seattle waterfront or AGC Marina on Lake Union. You can choose where you'd like to depart from when you book your tickets. You can also pay extra for bus transportation back to your starting point. Reviewers applaud the onboard guides, praising their knowledge of the region and their eagerness to answer questions and point out landmarks. Travelers were also pleased with the comfortable, clean boat. Some recommended avoiding the return bus service describing it as inconvenient, and instead suggested opting for your own transportation.

Tickets start at $54 for adults and $25 for kids ages 4 to 12 (children 3 and younger ride for free). Tour schedules vary depending on date and time of year; in the summer months, you can expect tours to be offered twice a day at 12:30 and 3:30 p.m. Argosy Cruises also offers harbor sightseeing tours.

Sailing Seattle – Sunset Sail

Price: Adults from $62; kids from $49 Duration: 2 hours

Head out for a two-hour sail on a custom 70-foot yacht to admire the downtown Seattle skyline as the sun sets. Described by reviewers as "peaceful" and a "must-do," this laid-back cruise does not include a guided commentary and does not follow a set route – the tour's course is dictated by wind direction and boat traffic on Elliott Bay. Visitors are allowed to bring any food or beverages they want on board (though glassware is prohibited, glass bottles are OK). The crew also recommends bringing a jacket or sweater in case it gets chilly – a suggestion echoed by reviewers. A word to the wise: Since the yachts were built for racing, bench seating is limited, and visitors might have to sit on the deck.

Tours are offered late April through early October. The exact sailing schedule varies by the day and month. Tickets start at $62 for adults and $49 for children ages 5 to 12. The company also operates daytime sails in the waters surrounding the city, as well as a two-hour sail on Puget Sound.

On this quick trip around Lake Union, passengers will see famous sights like the Space Needle, the Fremont Bridge, a variety of boats and yachts, and may even spot seaplanes taking off and landing, all while enjoying a cocktail (or mocktail). Travelers say the trip is relaxing and lots of fun, even for locals. Another highlight is seeing the houseboat featured in "Sleepless in Seattle."

Tickets start at $50 and include one drink. The one-hour cruise is offered eight times a day, though exact availability may vary by day. Candére Cruising also offers private outings, sunset cruises and day sails on Puget Sound.

Seattle's Tall Ship – Seattle Harbor Sailing Tour

Price: Adults from $45; kids from $35 Duration: 2 hours

Climb aboard the Bay Lady, an 85-foot tall ship, for a family-friendly sail around the Puget Sound. Departing from Bell Harbor Marina at Pier 66, this two-hour tour promises views of the Space Needle, Smith Tower and the city skyline. If you're lucky, you may spot harbor seals, depending on the time of year. In addition to two restrooms, the boat is equipped with an onboard bar. Travelers praise the attentive, friendly crew and the beautiful boat. They also say the views of Seattle and the sound are amazing.

The company sails daily, though exact times vary by day. The sailing season runs from the end of April to the end of October. Tickets start at $45 for adults and $35 for kids ages 2 to 12. Any purchases made on board cost extra. Seattle's Tall Ship also offers a sunset sail, in addition to private charters.

About Santorini Dave

Santorini Dave

Scenic Cruises and Boat Tours in Seattle

Many Seattle visitors choose to take in the local sights on a scenic cruise or boat tour . Seattle is a watery place, situated on the shores of Puget Sound , with Lake Union smack in the middle and long Lake Washington on the east side. The Lake Washington Ship Canal connects the Sound to the lakes, allowing boat travel from one to another. Boating and water recreation of all kinds are popular local past times.

Taking in Seattle sights and scenery from the water is a fun and relaxing option. Here are my recommendations for scenic cruises and boat tours in Seattle.

Argosy Cruises

Argosy Cruises offers regularly scheduled scenic cruises that leave from Pier 55 (for Puget Sound tours), Lake Union, and Kirkland (for Lake Washington) dock locations. These narrated sightseeing cruises last from 1 to 5 hours. The longest Seattle boat tours travel the Puget Sound to Blake Island, either to Tillicum Village for a salmon dinner and Native-themed entertainment, or for one of three nature experiences. Argosy Cruises also offers a variety of seasonal and special event cruises, including the Christmas Ship Festival, dinner and brunch cruises, and mystery dinners.

Waterways Cruises

Waterways' Seattle scenic cruise itineraries combine amazing views with great food. The sleek modern yachts in the Waterways fleet offer regularly scheduled dinner cruises on Lake Washington and Lake Union. Lunch, brunch, and wine pairing evengts are among your other cruise options. A few special cruises leave from Shilshole Marina to take in the scenic Puget Sound and to travel to island destinations.

Chartered Cruises and Boat Tours in Seattle

For those looking for a more personalized or private experience, these boat charters offer personalized cruise tours.

  • Enchantress Cruises: Put together your own perfect boat tour on Puget Sound, Lake Union, and/or Lake Washington on this luxurious bridge deck cruiser.
  • Cedarwave : This boat charter company offers picnic cruises and themed boat tours that depart from a number of Seattle waterfront locations.

Self-drive Scenic Cruises and Boat Tours in Seattle

Not your typical boat rental, these special vessels allow you to provide your own captain for a scenic and unique boat tour of Seattle.

The Electric Boat Company : Quiet, covered, comfortable, and easy to drive, these electric boats provide a leisurely 2- to 4-hour cruise around Lake Union. Be sure to bring your own picnic!

Hot Tub Boats : Relax with friends in a hot tub that can tour around Lake Union. Two to six people can participate in your scenic cruise-soak.

Ride the Ducks of Seattle

Traveling on both land and water in amphibious vehicles, the Duck tours are fun and festive. The Ride the Duck captains will narrate and amuse you as they drive past top Seattle sights like the Space Needle, the Downtown Waterfront, Pike Place Market, and Pioneer Square. You'll also spend time on Lake Union, taking in Seattle's spectacular city skyline, Gasworks Park, and the famous house boats.

I am a sucker for fun facts, and Salish Sea tours delivered just that! We are locals playing the tourist for the day, and this did not disappoint. I enjoyed the length of the tour, the drinks and the scenic views, I recommend this! You also get to keep your cups at the end so a nice souvenir for a reminder of a memory is a great take away!

Great tour - boat had comfortable seating -Teak chairs too. A couple bars and nice restrooms. Interesting fun facts with humor too.

My partner and I decided to take the noon 1-hr cruise today and we are so glad we did. We were virtually the only ones on the cruise (3 other passengers) which was really nice. We had a tasty lunch and decent margaritas. The narration through out the cruise was a little campy by fun and informative. I really appreciated the attention to the Native Tribal history throughout the cruise. I would absolutely recommend the Salish Sea Tour.

The 1-hr boat tour around the Seattle Harbor was well done. The boat has a full bar and light snacks. The staff was very friendly and the narration along the tour was informative, engaging and funny. We experienced smooth waters and the catamaran provided comfortable seating and we felt safe and at ease, which added to the joy of the tour. The only thing that would have made the boat tour any better would have been marine life sightings. The critters were absent on this day. Obviously, a factor the tour operator has no control over. Highly recommend this experience to any visitor to this beautiful city.

Even though I live in Seattle and ride in boats around here frequently I was still excited to check out this new option. I'd been hearing advertisements for awhile and thought this would be a good way to spend an afternoon with friends. The price is reasonable and the cruise is only an hour, so it can easily be tied in with other activities, or just a meal and a walk around the waterfront. I did have a terrible time trying to buy my tickets online ahead of time, but I never did figure out why this was, other members of my group seemed to have no problem. I am pretty confident I could have waited and bought my tickets when we arrived at the kiosk, but I was stressed my friends might have a ticket and I wouldn't. We attempted to sit outside on the back of the boat, which would have been a great way to enjoy the trip, but we soon realized that even though it seemed like a decent Seattle weather day it was still way too cold. We found window seats inside easily and then saw that had we remained outside on the deck we would have been on a camera the whole time which was being viewed inside. My friend was a bit too chatty and I missed a lot of the narration, if you are taking the time to spend the money you may want to make sure all members of your group are interested in listening. If you just want to enjoy water views you can save some money by just walking on the ferry. I did hear a few interesting facts, but missed quite a bit, which does mean I will likely go again at some point in the future. They do sell food and drinks, but unless you are starving it might be better to get a meal off the boat elsewhere since it's a short cruise and you might miss things.

I agree with one of the other reviewers. Go to Argosy Tours. The scenery is beautiful, but the staff is nothing but! The lady running the bar accused me of a "full line jump!" Like who would even do that. On top of that she was just plain RUDE! There is no live tour guide, just a lame recording. This is an exploitation of Native culture on top of that. I'm sorry to have paid even one penny on this "tour."

Photo of Heather B.

Zero stars. First of all it's 45 mins not an hour. Harassed for having service animals. When leaving the boat we were confronted by a guy asking where we were from. Before we had a chance to respond he accused us of taking advantage of the employees' kindness and talking about an employee having a service animal. They brought that employee and it's "service animal" (a puppy) when confronting us for some reason. These are some very gross people, told us that one of the dogs may be a service animal and the other is not. I have documentation of medical necessity and have never experienced this. I fly, travel, and go everywhere with my service animals. As we were leaving they "escorted" us off and told us that since we had a need for service animals we were not allowed back to ANY establishment on pier 57. Will be filing a formal complaint. Harassing guests and discriminating against those who require a service animal is never ok. Go to argosy, their staff members are kind to service animals and you'll get a trip that not cut short. This is a joke.

Good trip for the money. Lovely tour of the bay. Two on board bars for drinks. Staff was amazing and great!

Photo of Jason H.

Lazy kids didn't want to do that last boat tour of the day and refunded our money. They didn't care we sat around for 40 minutes on our last day in town to take the boat tour. Apparently the schedule posted on the ticket booth is subject to whether the 22 year old boat driver has a date or not. Don't waste your time.

Beautiful sea vessel and informative guided tour comments. Great great value! I highly recommend Salish Sea Tours for a relaxing ride on the bay!

Skip Seattle and Visit this Beautiful Washington Harbor Town Instead

Craving an escape where adventure meets tranquility? Look no further than Gig Harbor, Washington.

This waterfront community sits just across the infamous Narrows Bridge (also once known as Gallopin’ Gertie) from Tacoma and the busy I-5 corridor.

In Gig Harbor, everything is a little slower with its quaint downtown nestled along the harborfront, where you’ll watch sailboats come and go, and shipwrights work on century-old wooden fishing boats.

From kayaking through the harbor’s calm waters to hiking trails with breathtaking views, this charming town offers the perfect blend of fun and relaxation.

What To Do in Gig Harbor

Gig Harbor may be a small town, but there is no shortage of things to do during a weekend visit to this charming town.

Kayaking through the harbor, wandering around the boats tied up to the public dock, taking in the views from the many downtown restaurants, or even harvesting your own oysters on a local beach are just a few of the things that Gig Harbor offers.

Rent a Historic Wooden Boat

In downtown Gig Harbor, you’ll find the Gig Harbor Boat Shop. The boat shop is a community-run organization that helps to pass down boatbuilding and maintenance skills to the next generation of mariners.

Here, you can take a weekend-long wooden skiff-building class, take a charter on the historic and restored fishing vessel Veteran , or rent one of their meticulously restored wood power boats to explore the harbor.

Stop into their street-level gift shop to browse their nautical-themed gifts and inquire about current events at the shop. They may even let you wander down and tour the current projects inside the boatyard.

Kayak to the Harbor Entrance

Gig Harbor’s protected waters make it a perfect place for paddleboarding or kayaking. Even though the harbor does see a lot of boat traffic, especially during the summer months, the entire harbor is a no-wake zone, so waves shouldn’t be too much of an issue.

Rent a kayak from Lee’s SUP at the far end of the harbor and paddle your way past the rows of docks, past Skansie Brothers Park, and out to the narrow spit of land that protects the harbor from the open waters of Puget Sound.

Here, you can beach your watercraft on the rocky shore and explore the small lighthouse. There is no road access to this lighthouse, so reaching it by water is the only way to get to see it up close.

Be careful of the currents near the mouth of the harbor, especially when the tide is going out, and they can sweep your board or kayak out into the sound.

Explore the Beach at Kopachuck State Park

Across the peninsula from downtown, you’ll find picturesque Kopachuck State Park nestled amongst the rural neighborhoods that dot this part of town.

The gem of the park is its trail system that leads down to a wide beach that is perfect for exploring, especially during low tide.

Note that the trails down to the water are generally steep but are well worth the trek.

During low tide, try to find the oyster beds that dot the beach. If you know the regulations and have your shellfish license, you can even try harvesting a few for a beachside snack.

Pay A Visit to the New Gallopin’ Gertie

One of Washington’s most infamous historical landmarks is the Narrows Bridge. Today’s bridge is the second iteration of a bridge over this narrow stretch of water after the first suffered a catastrophic failure during a wind event.

I’m sure you’ve all seen the video , but it is well worth watching if you haven’t!

Only 4 months after its completion in 1940, the bridge’s roadway began violently dancing during a wind event and eventually collapsed into the narrows below.

Today, the remains of the old bridge still lay on the bottom of the sound and are said to be home to the largest octopuses in the world.

Where to Stay in Gig Harbor

Gig Habor has one of the most unique selections of housing options you’ll find anywhere. These include traditional homes and inns, waterfront cabins only accessible by boardwalk, sailboats, and historic wooden fishing vessels!

Near Sunrise Beach Park, you’ll find a row of vacation homes that are only accessible by boardwalk. Most of these homes are set right out over the beach and offer stunning views of the sound and Mt. Rainier.

In downtown Gig Harbor, you’ll find numerous boats for rent, ranging from small sailboards to a 78-foot classic yacht .

While the boats aren’t allowed to leave the dock while you’re staying on them, it is still a fun experience to spend the night on the water.

Where To Eat and Drink in Gig Harbor

There are no shortage of places to grab a bite to eat in downtown Gig Harbor. Seafood obviously rules the dining landscape but you’ll find restaurants ranging from pizza to brunch to tacos scattered throughout downtown.

Netshed No. 9

This go-to brunch spot sits in a renovated netshed right in the heart of downtown Gig Harbor.

During warm summer mornings, there is no better place to enjoy a cup of coffee and breakfast than on one of their patio tables. You might even see a seal cruising by while you eat!

Try the stuffed biscuit with a fried egg. It may sound a little weird to eat a sausage-stuffed biscuit with tomato gravy for breakfast, but trust me, it’s delicious.

The sourdough ricotta pancakes and cinnamon rolls of the day are also must-tries.

Millville Pizza Co.

One of the best restaurant additions to downtown Gig Harbor in recent memory, Millville Pizza Co. , serves incredible pizzas from its custom-built wood-fired oven.

Their salads are also a can’t-miss. This place is small, though, so expect a wait during prime dinner hours.

Tides Tavern

A Gig Harbor institution, this 21-and-over establishment is the perfect combination of everything you’d want in a cozy waterfront bar and restaurant.

As it is an adults-only restaurant, it is a right of passage for kids who grew up here to come back from college when they turn 21 and finally set foot inside this fabled place.

Tide’s Tavern even has its own dock, so you can pull up in your boat for dinner, which many residents do rather than drive over.

If beer-battered salmon and chips are on the menu, they are a must-order. However, they are usually only available during the spring and summer months.

7 Seas Brewing

Right next to Tides Tavern is the stunning 7 Seas Brewing taproom, which was built in the place of an old yacht brokerage.

Here, you’ll get some of the best sound and Mt. Rainier views from anywhere in town, and you can sip on their many delicious beer offerings.

Like Tides, 7 Seas has its own dock, so you can pull up by boat, kayak, or paddleboard!

What to Bring

Having covered how to plan your visit, let's focus on what you should bring to guarantee a comfortable and enjoyable experience at the Lake Union 4th of July Fireworks.

First and foremost, make sure you have your event tickets and a valid ID for age verification for our 21+ cruises , as these are mandatory for boarding. Given the duration of the event, from evening to late night, dressing in layers is advisable. Evenings on the lake can be cool, so a light jacket or a wrap would be prudent.

Comfortable footwear is essential, as you may need to stand or walk around to get the best view of the fireworks. With these essentials, your visit to the Lake Union fireworks will surely be a remarkable experience.

Pre-Fireworks Activities

Before the fireworks light up the sky, guests can enjoy a variety of engaging activities designed to enhance the festive atmosphere. The hours leading up to the grand display are filled with excitement and celebration, making the entire evening memorable.

Here are some of the activities guests can partake in:

  • Live Music Entertainment: Enjoy tunes the DJ will be playing on our two 4-hour cruises from Carillon Point setting the celebratory mood with a mix of classic hits and contemporary favorites. The upbeat music is perfect for dancing or simply enjoying the festive environment.
  • Gourmet Food: Be sure to pre-order your favorite sandwich or snack platter during the checkout process to guarantee your food order. A full-service bar will be available onboard for purchasing specialty cocktails, wine, beer, and snacks.

Per our policy, no outside food or drink is allowed onboard our vessels

  • Boat Rides: Take a pre-fireworks cruise, offering spectacular views of the city and a unique perspective of the festivities from the water.

These pre-fireworks activities make certain that the celebration is a blast from start to finish, setting the stage for a stunning fireworks display.

The Fireworks Display

The annual Lake Union fireworks spectacular captivates audiences with its dazzling display of pyrotechnic artistry. As darkness descends on the 4th of July, the skies above Lake Union burst into life with an array of colors and sounds that mark the celebration of America's Independence Day.

This meticulously choreographed event draws spectators from all around, each excited to witness the breathtaking explosions of light and color. Hosted in the heart of Seattle, the fireworks are launched from barges centered on the lake, ensuring a spectacular view from multiple vantage points around the area.

Each burst of fireworks is synchronized with a soundtrack that celebrates American heritage, enhancing the sensory experience. The display typically features a variety of effects, including peonies, chrysanthemums, and willows, culminating in a grand finale that lights up the night sky with an intense display of crackling and shimmering stars.

Jury finds Auburn police officer guilty of murdering man in 2019 shooting

Auburn police officer convicted in 2019 fatal shooting case.

Raw emotion could be heard in the courtroom today, as the guilty verdict came down in the murder trial of Auburn Police officer Jeffery Nelson.

AUBURN, Wash. - An Auburn police officer was found guilty of unnecessarily using deadly force when he shot and killed a man outside a convenience store in 2019.

The jury found Jeffrey Nelson guilty of second-degree murder and first-degree assault.

Auburn Police Officer Nelson shot Jesse Sarey twice while attempting to arrest him for disorderly conduct. Sarey, 26, was the third person Nelson had killed on duty in the past eight years.

Nelson's attorney, Emma Scanlan, told jurors during her opening statement that he believed — mistakenly — that Sarey had grabbed a folding knife from the officer's pocket. Instead, the knife had fallen on the ground and been picked up by a witness.

Every day for the last five years, Nelson has wished that he knew the knife was not in play as he grappled with Sarey: "We wouldn’t be here if he had," she said.

The case is the second to go to trial since Washington voters in 2018 made it easier to charge police by removing a standard that required prosecutors to prove they acted with malice; now, prosecutors must show that the level of force was unreasonable or unnecessary. In December, jurors acquitted three Tacoma police officers in the 2020 death of Manuel Ellis.

Sarey, who was homeless and had struggled with his mental health and substance use, had reportedly been throwing things at cars and creating a disturbance, though not threatening anyone, on May 31, 2019, when Nelson responded.

King County Special Prosecutor Angelo Calfo told the jury that Nelson ignored his training, which required him to use time, distance and cover, cardinal rules of de-escalation and officer safety.

Instead of waiting for backup, Nelson grabbed Sarey from where he had been sitting on the pavement and drinking from cups that had been thrown away; instead of keeping his distance and using cover, he approached Sarey and stood over him, Calfo said.

When Sarey failed to comply with Nelson's commands to put his hands behind his back, Nelson grabbed him and started wrestling with him and punching him. Nelson shoved him against an icebox, pulled out his gun and shot him in the abdomen, Calfo said.

"Not to excuse Mr. Sarey's conduct — he should have complied," Calfo said. "But a police officer should use his training to avoid the need to use force. That's not what happened."

Sarey slumped to the ground, reclining backward. Nelson then cleared a jammed round out of his gun, glanced at a nearby witness, turned back to Sarey and shot him again — this time in the forehead, video of the encounter shows.

Like the first, Calfo said, the second shot was unjustified: "He could have done a million things other than shoot this man in the head."

Nelson’s attorney told the jury that he will testify during the trial. He has been waiting five years to say exactly what happened on that day, Scanlan said, including feeling during the struggle that Sarey had grabbed for his gun.

Nelson said in a written statement after the shooting that he believed Sarey had a knife and posed a threat before the first shot — and that Sarey was on his knees in a "squatting fashion … ready to spring forward" before the officer fired again. Nelson has pleaded not guilty to charges of second-degree murder and first-degree assault.

An Iraq war veteran, Nelson joined the department in 2008.

The city of Auburn paid Sarey’s family $4 million to settle a civil rights claim and has paid nearly $2 million more to settle other litigation over Nelson’s actions as a police officer.

The trial, before King County Superior Court Judge Nicole Gaines Phelps at the Norm Maleng Regional Justice Center in Kent, is expected to last several weeks. Gaines has ruled that jurors will not hear evidence about Nelson’s prior uses of deadly force.

In one of those earlier cases, the city of Auburn agreed to pay $1.25 million to the family of a different man killed by Nelson, Isaiah Obet. Obet had been reportedly breaking into houses and attempting to carry out a carjacking with a knife when Nelson confronted him in 2017.

Nelson released his police dog, which bit Obet, and then shot the man in the torso. Obet, on the ground and still fighting off the police dog, started to try to get back up, and Nelson shot him again, in the head, police said. The department hailed Nelson's actions as protecting the community.

In another incident, Nelson shot and killed Brian Scaman, a Vietnam veteran with mental issues and a history of felonies, in 2011 after pulling Scaman over for a burned-out headlight. Scaman got out of his car with a knife and refused to drop it; Nelson shot him in the head. An inquest jury cleared Nelson of any wrongdoing.
