The 4 best seattle boat tours.

Take in the Emerald City's top sights from the water.

The Best Seattle Boat Tours

After exploring Seattle on land, snap photos of its skyline from a boat.

There's no better way to admire the stunning Seattle waterfront than from a boat. A variety of boat tours – from kid-friendly sightseeing cruises to romantic sunset sails – allow visitors to take in all the sights while enjoying a fresh sea breeze. Relying on expert input and traveler sentiment, U.S. News compiled four of the best Seattle boat tours.

Argosy Cruises – Locks Cruise

Price: Adults from $54; kids from $25 Duration: 2 hours

Enjoy the unique experience of passing through the Ballard Locks on this two-hour, one-way cruise. As you transition from the freshwater of Lake Union to the saltwater of Puget Sound, you'll hear live narration about Seattle's history and maritime industry from an onboard guide. Along the way, you'll pass some of the Emerald City's top sights, including the Space Needle , Olympic Sculpture Park and Gas Works Park, among others. Note that the cruise is one way, meaning it ends at a different location than it starts. You'll be dropped off at Pier 54 on the Seattle waterfront or AGC Marina on Lake Union. You can choose where you'd like to depart from when you book your tickets. You can also pay extra for bus transportation back to your starting point. Reviewers applaud the onboard guides, praising their knowledge of the region and their eagerness to answer questions and point out landmarks. Travelers were also pleased with the comfortable, clean boat. Some recommended avoiding the return bus service describing it as inconvenient, and instead suggested opting for your own transportation.

Tickets start at $54 for adults and $25 for kids ages 4 to 12 (children 3 and younger ride for free). Tour schedules vary depending on date and time of year; in the summer months, you can expect tours to be offered twice a day at 12:30 and 3:30 p.m. Argosy Cruises also offers harbor sightseeing tours.

Sailing Seattle – Sunset Sail

Price: Adults from $62; kids from $49 Duration: 2 hours

Head out for a two-hour sail on a custom 70-foot yacht to admire the downtown Seattle skyline as the sun sets. Described by reviewers as "peaceful" and a "must-do," this laid-back cruise does not include a guided commentary and does not follow a set route – the tour's course is dictated by wind direction and boat traffic on Elliott Bay. Visitors are allowed to bring any food or beverages they want on board (though glassware is prohibited, glass bottles are OK). The crew also recommends bringing a jacket or sweater in case it gets chilly – a suggestion echoed by reviewers. A word to the wise: Since the yachts were built for racing, bench seating is limited, and visitors might have to sit on the deck.

Tours are offered late April through early October. The exact sailing schedule varies by the day and month. Tickets start at $62 for adults and $49 for children ages 5 to 12. The company also operates daytime sails in the waters surrounding the city, as well as a two-hour sail on Puget Sound.

Canderé Cruising – One Hour Sightseeing Cruise

Price: From $50 Duration: 1 hour

Board a six-person vessel for an intimate outing with Candére Cruising on its one-hour sightseeing cruise, where the captain also doubles as the bartender. On this quick trip around Lake Union, passengers will see famous sights like the Space Needle, the Fremont Bridge, a variety of boats and yachts, and may even spot seaplanes taking off and landing, all while enjoying a cocktail (or mocktail). Travelers say the trip is relaxing and lots of fun, even for locals. Another highlight is seeing the houseboat featured in "Sleepless in Seattle."

Tickets start at $50 and include one drink. The one-hour cruise is offered eight times a day, though exact availability may vary by day. Candére Cruising also offers private outings, sunset cruises and day sails on Puget Sound.

View & Book Tickets: Option 1 | Option 2 | Option 3

Seattle's Tall Ship – Seattle Harbor Sailing Tour

Price: Adults from $45; kids from $35 Duration: 2 hours

Climb aboard the Bay Lady, an 85-foot tall ship, for a family-friendly sail around the Puget Sound. Departing from Bell Harbor Marina at Pier 66, this two-hour tour promises views of the Space Needle, Smith Tower and the city skyline. If you're lucky, you may spot harbor seals, depending on the time of year. In addition to two restrooms, the boat is equipped with an onboard bar. Travelers praise the attentive, friendly crew and the beautiful boat. They also say the views of Seattle and the sound are amazing.

The company sails daily, though exact times vary by day. The sailing season runs from the end of April to the end of October. Tickets start at $45 for adults and $35 for kids ages 2 to 12. Any purchases made on board cost extra. Seattle's Tall Ship also offers a sunset sail, in addition to private charters.

Historical Significance

Exploring the historical significance of the Seattle Locks Cruise, it becomes evident that this attraction offers beyond a scenic journey—it serves as a living museum that captures the essence of Seattle’s maritime heritage. The Hiram M. Chittenden Locks, completed in 1917, are not only crucial for managing the water levels between the saltwater of Puget Sound and the freshwater of Lakes Union and Washington but have also stood as a proof of engineering ingenuity. This essential infrastructure was built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and has since facilitated the passage of around 50,000 vessels each year, showcasing a pivotal element in Seattle’s economic development and maritime history.

The locks’ role extends beyond mere functionality; they have helped prevent saltwater intrusion, preserving the delicate ecological balance necessary for the local aquatic life. Additionally, as part of the cruise, passengers witness the operational mechanics of the locks, offering them a direct link to understanding the complexities and challenges of early 20th-century engineering projects. This immersive experience not only educates but also connects visitors with the historical narrative of Seattle, highlighting the city’s evolution from a fledgling port to a bustling urban center.

Onboard Experience

While cruising through the historic Seattle locks, passengers enjoy a range of onboard amenities designed to enhance their experience. The Locks Cruise offers a unique blend of comfort, entertainment, and scenic beauty, ensuring that every moment on board is memorable. From the moment passengers step onto the vessel, they’re greeted with a hospitable environment that caters to all ages and preferences.

The cruise features several key amenities:

  • Full-Service Bar: Offering local beverages, the bar is a perfect spot to relax while enjoying the views. Passengers can choose from a variety of craft beers, regional wines, cocktails, and non-alcoholic options.
  • Variety of Local Snacks: Complementing the beverage selection, the cruise provides a range of snacks sourced locally. Whether you’re craving sweet or savory, there’s a snack to satisfy every palate.
  • Comfortable Seating Options: The vessel is equipped with both indoor and outdoor seating. Indoors, guests can enjoy climate-controlled comfort, while outdoor seating offers fresh air and unobstructed views of the Seattle skyline and the operation of the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks.

These amenities are thoughtfully designed to enhance the educational and leisure aspects of the Seattle Locks Cruise, making it a preferred choice for both tourists and locals.

For last-minute planners, limited tickets might be available at either our Waterfront or AGC Marina in South Lake Union boarding locations. However, availability cannot be guaranteed, and options may be restricted compared to pre-booking.

Trip Protection is available for purchase, offering a full refund up to 48 hours before departure, providing peace of mind for unforeseen changes to your schedule.

Transportation and Tips

Finding your way to and from the Seattle Locks Cruise requires careful planning and consideration of various transport options. Since the cruise is a one-way trip that ends at a different location from the starting point, passengers need to plan both their arrival and their return journey. This can involve multiple modes of transportation, depending on one’s starting point and subsequent destination in Seattle.

Here are some essential tips to manage your transportation:

  • Choose Locks Cruise with Return Bus: When booking your Locks Cruise, choose the the round-trip experience! Starts and ends at Pier 54 on Elliott Bay. Same two hours of sightseeing on the Locks Cruise, plus tickets for a Return Bus that will transport you back to Pier 54. Return Bus operated by City Sightseeing.
  • Use Ride-Sharing or Taxis: For convenience, consider booking a taxi or a ride-sharing service like Uber or Lyft. This can be particularly useful for the return journey from the cruise’s endpoint, ensuring a smooth and hassle-free conclusion to your adventure.
  • Drive and Park Strategically: If you prefer driving, look for parking garages near the cruise departure points. Remember, since the cruise ends at a different location, you might need to take public transit back to your vehicle or plan for a ride-sharing service.
  •  Check Public Transit Options: Utilize Seattle’s efficient public transportation system. Buses and light rail can get you close to both the departure and arrival points. Visit the King County Metro website for schedules and route updates.

Scenic Cruises and Boat Tours in Seattle

Many Seattle visitors choose to take in the local sights on a scenic cruise or boat tour . Seattle is a watery place, situated on the shores of Puget Sound , with Lake Union smack in the middle and long Lake Washington on the east side. The Lake Washington Ship Canal connects the Sound to the lakes, allowing boat travel from one to another. Boating and water recreation of all kinds are popular local past times.

Taking in Seattle sights and scenery from the water is a fun and relaxing option. Here are my recommendations for scenic cruises and boat tours in Seattle.

Argosy Cruises

Argosy Cruises offers regularly scheduled scenic cruises that leave from Pier 55 (for Puget Sound tours), Lake Union, and Kirkland (for Lake Washington) dock locations. These narrated sightseeing cruises last from 1 to 5 hours. The longest Seattle boat tours travel the Puget Sound to Blake Island, either to Tillicum Village for a salmon dinner and Native-themed entertainment, or for one of three nature experiences. Argosy Cruises also offers a variety of seasonal and special event cruises, including the Christmas Ship Festival, dinner and brunch cruises, and mystery dinners.

Waterways Cruises

Waterways' Seattle scenic cruise itineraries combine amazing views with great food. The sleek modern yachts in the Waterways fleet offer regularly scheduled dinner cruises on Lake Washington and Lake Union. Lunch, brunch, and wine pairing evengts are among your other cruise options. A few special cruises leave from Shilshole Marina to take in the scenic Puget Sound and to travel to island destinations.

Chartered Cruises and Boat Tours in Seattle

For those looking for a more personalized or private experience, these boat charters offer personalized cruise tours.

  • Enchantress Cruises: Put together your own perfect boat tour on Puget Sound, Lake Union, and/or Lake Washington on this luxurious bridge deck cruiser.
  • Cedarwave : This boat charter company offers picnic cruises and themed boat tours that depart from a number of Seattle waterfront locations.

Self-drive Scenic Cruises and Boat Tours in Seattle

Not your typical boat rental, these special vessels allow you to provide your own captain for a scenic and unique boat tour of Seattle.

The Electric Boat Company : Quiet, covered, comfortable, and easy to drive, these electric boats provide a leisurely 2- to 4-hour cruise around Lake Union. Be sure to bring your own picnic!

Hot Tub Boats : Relax with friends in a hot tub that can tour around Lake Union. Two to six people can participate in your scenic cruise-soak.

Ride the Ducks of Seattle

Traveling on both land and water in amphibious vehicles, the Duck tours are fun and festive. The Ride the Duck captains will narrate and amuse you as they drive past top Seattle sights like the Space Needle, the Downtown Waterfront, Pike Place Market, and Pioneer Square. You'll also spend time on Lake Union, taking in Seattle's spectacular city skyline, Gasworks Park, and the famous house boats.

California sea lion hops into UCLA rowers' boat

A malnourished sea lion pup hopped into a UCLA rower's boat, surprising the crew and nuzzling some of the athletes.

LOS ANGELES - A malnourished sea lion pup hopped into a UCLA rower's boat, surprising the crew and nuzzling some of the athletes.

UCLA sophomore Logan Hibbard told KTVU that the sea lion jumped into her boat last Monday while she was practicing early in the morning on the Marina del Ray.

"A sea lion hopped onto the bow deck of one of our boats and then just swam around to the boat that I was in," Hibbard said in an interview.

Hibbard wasn't scared.

"Honestly, I tried to be really calm," she said. "It was just a baby sea lion. He was really, really friendly. I figured if I stayed calm, that would make him more calm. And so, we just sort of had an understanding with each other."

Teammates were able to snap a few photographs, showing the sea lion, whom the crew nicknamed "Bru" for the UCLA Bruins, snuggling up to Hibbard on the boat.

Hibbard also admitted she tried petting Bru. But the sea lion would have none of that.

"It didn't really like it," Hibbard said. "So, I stopped."

Hibbard and her teammates called the Marine Mammal Care Center in Los Angeles, where authorities took the sea lion to rehabilitate her.

The coaches wrapped up the sea lion in towels to get it to shore.

Hibbard said the mammal experts said the sea lion was malnourished, which is likely why she hopped in the boat and was so willing to get close to humans.

Other forms of sea creatures are also experiencing starvation this spring, such as pelicans, along California's coastline, although the reasons why aren't immediately clear.

Hibbard found the whole experience exciting.

"More than anything, I was just grateful because it was such a cool experience," she said.  "And it was really fun to have him ride along with us."

This story was reported from Oakland, Calif.

All aboard! 7 best boating vacations along the East Coast

Meg St-Esprit

May 22, 2024 // By Meg St-Esprit

By Meg St-Esprit May 22, 2024

Boat travelers can take in sunsets over the National Harbor marina

It's no secret that summer travel in 2024 will be hot. Even with rising prices and bookings, Americans still want experiences this summer. For some travelers, this means taking more than their suitcases on their next big trip: They're taking their boats.

Here's why boat ownership is skyrocketing and the best places for boating vacations this summer.

Why do people go boating?

People go boating because the community is tight-knit, and fellow travelers hop aboard to forge a new friendship or are open to lending a hand with a repair. While some larger boats have accommodations, many tourist destinations boast fabulous hotels and marinas with daily rental rates. This makes it easy to take even small pleasure crafts, like pontoon boats and speedboats, along for a boating vacation.

Advertisement Advertisement

If you've never traveled with your boat, there are some considerations to think about. State boating laws and regulations vary, so checking your destination's guidelines before embarking on a boat vacation is essential. For example, children under 18 can drive boats in some states, but the policies vary widely.

Boaters also should be aware of best green boating practices when traveling. The Stop Aquatic Hitchhikers campaign created guidelines for safely drying and cleaning boats' hulls between destinations.

If you want to kick back with a boat drink and watch the sunset over the starboard side, check out this list of some of the best places to take your boat on vacation along the East Coast.

Murrells Inlet, South Carolina

Murrells Inlet has a variety of marina options for vacationing with your boat

While nearby Myrtle Beach is famous for spring break trips and family fun, Murrells Inlet's slower pace is perfect for taking in some #boatlife while on vacation.

A small waterfront fishing town located at the south end of the Grand Strand, with a historic district listed in the National Register of Historic Places, Murrells Inlet is the perfect compromise for travelers who want to be near the beach but own smaller boats that can't handle ocean waves.

Marlin Quay can handle boats up to 80 feet long and has daily rental slips available. Book well before the summer season to secure a spot for your boat during your trip. The inlet waters are calm and perfect for fishing and water sports. Tourists can rent paddle boats, kayaks, and jet skis at Express Watersports to add more marine fun to their trip.

Age limit: In South Carolina, individuals born after July 1, 2007, must take an online boating test .

Portland, Maine

Portland is designed for relaxing New England boating vacations

Portland, Maine , is home to charming boutique hotels and many award-winning eateries, making it the perfect stop for a laid-back boating excursion. More than a dozen public marinas exist along Portland's coast, so there are plenty of options for boats of different sizes or travelers with specific docking needs.

Stop for dinner at Sur Lie , a James Beard Foundation Award semifinalist in 2023, or Thistle & Grouse , a downtown gastropub. Portland has that classic New England vibe that screams "boat vacation." Boating in Portland is seasonal, so it makes a great summer stop.

Age limit: Anyone born after January 1, 1999, must complete a boater safety course before cruising Maine's waters, but several online options exist.

Ocean City, Maryland

Located on a barrier island, Ocean City marinas take advantage of the quieter waters

Known for classic coastal fun along a 3-mile boardwalk, Ocean City is also perfect for family travelers with boats. The Jolly Roger amusement park juts out into the Atlantic on an iconic pier, and there's no shortage of eateries to grab a bite along the boardwalk.

There is a public boat launch at 64th Street and several marinas with daily or weekly slip rates. Since Ocean City is on a barrier island, the Isle of Wight Bay and Assawoman Bay have calm waters for smaller boats that can't handle the Atlantic's waves. The water near Ocean City is shallow, so tide charts are necessary for safe boating.

Age limit: Anyone born after July 1, 1972 , must take an online boating test before charting Maryland's waters for a boating vacation.

The Finger Lakes, New York

The Finger Lakes region of New York is a paradise for boating vacations

This collection of breathtaking lakes in western New York is rife with small hamlets and larger harbors, making it a top choice to take your boat for vacation. Comprised of 11 glacial lakes and Lake Ontario, vacationers can fish for bass, trout, and salmon in these pristine waters spanning 14 counties.

The Harbor Lights Marina in Hammondsport has gas and snacks, while Sutter's Canandaigua Marina offers gas and daily slip rentals. Choose the Finger Lakes for your boating vacation if you're seeking laid-back days without much hustle and bustle. There's plenty to do, but it's the perfect place to relax on board and soak in summer.

Age limit: New York's boating laws can be complex, so check out the guidelines before hitching up your trailer. Boaters born after January 1, 1978, need a safety certificate.

Martin County, Florida

Boating vacations in Martin County, Florida, include sunsets over the Roosevelt Bridge

Located along a quieter stretch of coast just north of South Florida's fun Space Coast (a reader-voted favorite for Best Summer Travel Destination ), Martin County is home to 10 quaint towns built around boat life. It's all centered around St. Lucie Inlet, part of one of the most biodiverse lagoon and estuary systems in the nation. Martin County is perfect for boating vacations year-round and offers a quiet setting adjacent to some of Florida's top destinations.

Pirate's Cove Resort and Marina in Port Salerno offers a full-service marina and 50 quaint rooms (each with a waterfront view). There also are chain options where guests can use rewards points, such as Marriott's Hutchinson Island Beach Resort on Hutchison Island. The hotel has a private marina and an 18-hole golf course for guests.

Age limit: Florida doesn't have a minimum age to operate a boat, but boaters must follow some requirements .

Charleston, South Carolina

Boaters can dock at The Beach Club at Charleston Harbor Resort & Marina

This boating vacation is perfect for travelers who love history and culture. Charleston has cobblestone streets and historic plaques, so walking tours are a great way to view the region. Water taxis take guests back and forth across the harbor, a convenient way to get to dinner, even if you have your boat on hand.

At The Beach Club at Charleston Harbor Resort & Marina , guests can sit on the wraparound front porch and take in the resort's marina and Charleston's skyline. A waterfront pool is a bonus at this grand old resort.

Age limit: In South Carolina, boaters born after July 1, 2007, must take an online boating test to drive a watercraft.

National Harbor, Maryland

The Capital Wheel overlooks the National Harbor and Washington, D.C.'s skyline

Washington, D.C., is already a top travel destination along the East Coast, but Maryland's National Harbor is the best way to take your boat on vacation to our nation's capital. Located along the Potomac River with city skyline views, it's the perfect spot to dock your boat and venture out on multiple excursions.

The Gaylord National Harbor Resort and Convention Center features a 19-story glass atrium, indoor pool, boat slips, on-site restaurants, and family entertainment options. For those who prefer a boutique hotel, the AC Hotel National Harbor is a good fit, and several other hotel chains are located right along the harbor.

There is no boat launch at National Harbor, so you'll have to park your vessel further up the Potomac or in the Chesapeake Bay. The staff at National Harbor Marina suggests using Snag a Slip to book dock space for your trip.

Age limit: Like Ocean City, boaters born after 1972 must take an online boating test .
