Coimbatore, also known as Kovai, is located in Tamil Nadu and is quite a bustling city. Naturally, although the people here love where they live, they do want to get away from the bustling city every once in a while. There are a number of great weekend getaways from Coimbatore and a number of good places around to visit. Here are some of them:

Places to Visit Near Coimbatore within 100 km :

• Nelliyampathy

1. Kotagiri

Located about 61 km from Coimbatore, Kotagiri is a prominent hill station in Tamil Nadu in the Nilgiri District. A number of villages fall in this territory and it is quite a pleasure to explore them when you are on a vacation. This hill station was once a summer resort of the British and there are many colonial styled homes still present. The churches however, truly reflect the nature of the region and have very impressive, European architecture. The best time to visit is from December to February.

Located about 70 km away from Coimbatore, Ooty needs no introduction. A theme based hill station, it is about 3 hours away from the main city and hence is a popular getaway for the residents of Coimbatore. In fact, visitors from all over South India come here every month. The best time to visit is from October to June. One can get the full impact of the beauty of Nilgiri Hills here. The coffee here is to die for and one can ride the toy train as well, and attend flower shows. It is the perfect holiday destination in every way.

3. Bellikkal

This small hamlet is located about 80 km from Coimbatore, and lies on the Sigur Plateau. It is in fact a hill station, and while it is mostly advised not to visit hilly areas in monsoons, the full impact of the beauty of the region is best experienced in the months between June to September, when the monsoons turn the hills lush and verdant. It is located at a height of 5500 feet above sea level and is bordered by the Nilgiris of the Western Ghats. The hill station is all about scenic beauty where you will be able to sit and relax and not worry about traveling and sightseeing or engage in busy touristy activities. It is hard to come by such a peaceful location and is considered a great picnic spot near Coimbatore.

4. Nelliyampathy

Still not explored much, Nelliyampathy is a quaint hill station that is like a hidden gem in the Ghats. It is located about 82 km from Coimbatore and the best time to visit is from October to March. Located in the Palakkad district in Kerala, this region is quite unexplored and so those who want to go to out of the way places come here. There are lush forests and orange orchards and coffee plantations. In fact, it is known as Poor Man’s Ooty. Whatever one might call it, you will be mesmerized by the beauty of this place, especially right after the monsoons. Madumalai is located at the juncture of the three states of Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu and hence is a popular destination of the people of all three states. The best time to visit is from December to June. One can visit the thick woods of Nilgiri here and it is a great site for bird spotting. There are more than one wildlife sanctuaries located here and you will be able to see a large number of birds, hares, deer, snakes, and the famed Nilgai. Mudumalai was established in 1940 by the British and there are many tastefully constructed homes and villas there which are also available for rent. It is located about 103 km from Coimbatore and the best time to visit is between December to June.

2. Nilambur

This region is known as the Land of Teak Plantations and is located about 113 km from Coimbatore. The best time to visit is between the months of December to February. The region lies in the Malappuram locale of Kerala and there are some very famous historical spots here as well. If you are interested in history, then you can learn about the fascinating history of the Malabar region from here. There are some villas and chateaus which are a joy to explore. There is wildlife to be spotted and water bodies in which you can enjoy boating. You will also get to taste some authentic local cuisine not found anywhere else.

3. Malappuram

Malappuram is located about 130 km from Coimbatore and the best time to visit is between July to March. Aside from the stunning scenic beauty of this place, the region is known for being historically very rich. The history of the region had made it quite an attraction and many aristocratic houses still live here. It is a pleasure to have a tour of the coconut manors and the villas of the region. The stream belt of Bharathapuzha and the rainforest of the Nedumkayam are off beat places that attract visitors who want to explore something out of the ordinary. Located about 132 km away from Coimbatore, the best time to visit this region is between October to May. It is located in the state of Kerala and Thrissur is known for its exceptional beauty. The region is famous for the Salim Bird Sanctuary and has been named after Ornithologist Dr. Salim Ali.
