Bandhavgarh National Park: A safari guide's tips on the best time to visit, permits, hotels

By Toshita Sahni

Bandhavgarh National Park A safari guide's tips on the best time to visit permits hotels

Nestled among the Satpura hills in central India is Bandhavgarh, a national park rich in history as well as wildlife. This famous tiger reserve in Madhya Pradesh gets its name from a legend. “Bandhav” means brother and “garh” means fort—it is believed that Lord Ram gifted a fort in this region to his younger brother, Laxman. The park has many sites of archaeological significance, but its glorious tigers remain the landmark attraction.

Prakash Dwivedi was born and raised in a village on the borders of Bandhavgarh. He has spent fourteen years as a safari guide, introducing people to the many charms of the forest he considers his home. Here’s what you should know before planning a trip to Bandhavgarh National Park:

What makes Bandhavgarh National Park special?

The increased tiger density of Bandhavgarh draws many enthusiasts from within and outside the country. The reserve is spread over more than 1500sqkm and boasts a population of over 120 tigers. Its terrain is characterised by hills, valleys, marshes, meadows and rivers—all of which shelter wildlife ranging from ferocious carnivores to delicate butterflies. Besides biodiversity, the park is also home to many legends and places of historical interest. Within the reserve, one can find Badi Gufa, a 10th-century cave carved out of solid sandstone, said to have housed armies in ancient times. Visitors frequent Three Cave Point, as the structure is known to provide animals shelter from the elements. It is also believed that Sant Kabir and Tansen have stayed in Bandhavgarh.

What to spot at Bandhavgarh National Park?

There are approximately 37 species of mammals and 250 species of birds in the park. The most commonly spotted mammals are tigers, leopards, sloth bears, jackals, and wild dogs. Among the three deer species found in the park, sightings of the sambar deer and the spotted deer are more frequent than those of the elusive barking deer. You will also find 300+ species of birds in the reserve, such as the pond heron, white-necked stork, coppersmith barbet, sarus crane, asian green bee-eater, scarlet minivet, and many more.

Dwivedi has many spotting rituals, but the most important one is to pay attention to sounds in the forest.

“More often than not, the behaviour of other animals will alert you that a predator is in the vicinity. For instance, a naturalist will tell you that deer and langurs tend to make a distinctive noise when they feel threatened. So, if you hear that particular call, you can predict that a tiger must be close at hand.”

What's the best time to visit Bandhavgarh National Park?

Safaris in the core zones happen only from 1st October to the end of June. They remain closed during the peak monsoon season, although the buffer zones are open year-round. If you are mainly interested in spotting animals and birds, summer offers you the best chances. With the heat, the forest’s vegetation starts drying up. Natural bodies of water inside the reserve are very few. Moreover, artificial ones, which are periodically replenished, lie very close to the safari routes. Therefore, animals are obliged to come to these specific locations to drink water—thus increasing the probability of sightings . As foliage becomes thinner, birds can also be spotted more easily.

On the other hand, if you want to enjoy the lush greenery of this majestic park, Dwivedi suggests visiting between October and February. He explains, “In winter, the forest is completely green and provides a scenic backdrop to your sightings. The animals are harder to spot but more at ease. You get to see them leisurely roaming around their habitat—it’s truly wonderful. In the summers, you only see thirsty, frustrated animals pacing in a dry jungle.”

How many safaris should you do during a three-night stay?

The guide recommends doing at least one safari in each of the three core zones so that you feel that “you have truly experienced Bandhavgarh”. Since no fences or barriers separate each of the zones, animals are free to move between them. Hence, visiting all of them gives you more opportunities to spot different species.

What are the safari slots to book at Bandhavgarh?

There are two slots in the day for safaris. At present, the morning safari is from around 6:45am to 11:30am, whereas the afternoon one is from 3pm to 6pm. These timings keep changing slightly, depending on the seasons and times of sunrise and sunset. According to Dwivedi, the morning slot is the best, because you get to spend four to five hours in the jungle. Not only is the forest a lovely place to be at that time, but the longer duration improves your chances of spotting the animals. Night safaris happen in the buffer zones from 7pm to 10pm. However, visibility is restricted to what the headlights of your vehicle can illuminate. Although it is thrilling to be in the jungle in the dark, don’t expect to get many sightings.

How to book a safari permit at Bandhavgarh and how much does it cost?

It is best to book the permits online via the Madhya Pradesh forest office’s  website . Dwivedi advises against doing it offline. A permit costs Rs2,450 for weekdays and Rs3,050 for weekends and festival dates. Safari bookings open four months in advance, and only a specific number of jeeps are allowed inside the forest per shift. Hence, it is important to plan ahead. Note that six people (excluding the driver and the guide) are allowed in one jeep. Children aged five years and above are counted among the six.

How to book a jeep and guide at Bandhavgarh?

Once you book a permit, you have to present a hard copy of the same to the forest department office at the Park. They will then allot you a jeep and a guide. The jeep charge is Rs3,000. Guides assigned by the department charge Rs480 or Rs600, depending on their category, G1 or G2. Dwivedi clarifies that there is no significant difference between the two options. Guests can pay extra and choose an independent guide to accompany them. For greater convenience, most hotels offer to handle all the bookings on behalf of the client and charge a service fee.

Which zones are the best in Bandhavgarh?

Bandhavgarh National Park A safari guide's tips on the best time to visit permits hotels

Unlike other national parks in the country, the formal zoning of the park is relatively recent. Before 2012, Bandhavgarh did not have different zones and well-established regulations. Today, it has three core and four buffer zones. Tala, Magadhi and Khitauli are the core zones exclusively used for safari activities. There are also four buffer zones: Dhamokar, Johila, Panpatha and Paljha. People from nearby villages tend to frequent these zones to collect timber and forest produce. Animal sightings are fewer in these buffer zones because the animals are driven away by human activity and movement. Nevertheless, safaris also take place in these buffer zones (except Paljha).

Dwivedi highly recommends the Tala Zone, which is also the oldest in the park. The Charan Ganga river flows into the Tala Zone from the famous Shesh Shaiya point. In the summers, many animals gravitate towards this natural water body. According to the guide, the natural beauty of this zone, especially during winters, is awe-inspiring.

Besides jeep drives, what else can you do at Bandhavgarh?

Hotels near the park arrange bird-watching trips, nature walks, tribal village visits as well as a range of adventure activities. Dwivedi suggests opting for a village visit. These are immersive experiences that give you in-depth insights into the culture, habits and practices of the locals. You may also get to learn about how organic medicines and other natural products are made.

Bandhavgarh National Park Safari Booking - Tiger Safari & more

map

Bandhavgarh National Park, nestled in North India, experiences the rhythmic dance of the monsoon, accompanied by distinct winter and summer seasons.

In the scorching summers, from end March to end June, temperatures soar up to 44°C (111°F), peaking in May and June. The onset of mid-June brings sudden rains, catching visitors by surprise.

As winters set in around mid-November until the end of February, the park transforms into a cold haven. Bracing against the biting cold, visitors don multiple layers for protection. Temperatures can plummet to as low as 2°C (35.6°F), and frost forms in the open marshy hollows. Since park vehicles are open, it  is crucial to wear exceptionally warm clothes to combat the chilling wind.

History and Conservation Efforts at Bandhavgarh

Bandhavgarh National Park has a storied history intertwined with conservation efforts that have transformed it into the thriving wilderness sanctuary it is today. Historically, the park was used as a hunting ground by the Maharajas of Rewa, a practice that continued during British colonial rule. However, in 1968, it was declared a National Park and later, a Tiger Reserve in 1993, with the primary goal of preserving the Bengal Tiger population, which was once on the brink of extinction. The park's rich biodiversity and historical significance, with the ancient Bandhavgarh Fort at its heart, also contributed to its conservation importance.

Conservation efforts at Bandhavgarh have been notably successful, making it one of India's most renowned Tiger reserves. Stringent anti-poaching measures, habitat restoration, and community engagement have played pivotal roles in safeguarding the park's wildlife. The park's core area, divided into different zones, is carefully managed to minimize human interference and provide a safe haven for the Tiger and its prey species. Additionally, local communities are actively involved in conservation initiatives, which not only foster a sense of responsibility but also provide economic benefits, contributing to the park's long-term sustainability.

Bandhavgarh National Park Safari - The Earth Safari

To truly experience the wonders of Bandhavgarh National Park, embarking on a Bandhavgarh Safari is a must. The park offers two main types of safaris: Jeep Safari and Canter Safari, each providing a unique perspective for viewing the park's diverse wildlife and landscape.

Types of Safaris in Bandhavgarh National Park

Jeep Safari: Jeep safaris are an intimate and thrilling way to explore the park. These open-top vehicles allow you to get up close and personal with the wildlife and offer a more immersive experience. With a knowledgeable guide, you can navigate the park's winding trails and hidden corners.

Canter Safari: For groups, Canter Safaris in 20-seater open buses are ideal. While less intimate, canters provide a broader aerial view of the landscape and wildlife sightings, perfect for travelers who want to soak in the ambiance with others. The higher vantage point allows spotting animals camouflaged in the grassland and forest.

Bandhavgarh Safari booking should be done much in advance with choice of experienced guides to maximize wildlife sightings. Venturing by open-top jeep or canter into these core zones provides a magical immersion into the park's biodiverse landscapes.

Safari Zones in Bandhavgarh

Embarking on a Bandhavgarh National Park Safari is the best way to experience this treasured tiger reserve and spot iconic wildlife in their natural habitats.

The core zones like Tala, Magdhi and Khitauli offer thrilling safari adventures. Tala zone is renowned for high Tiger density, making it the premier area for Tiger sightings. Safari routes here wind through shady sal forests, open meadows and hilly terrain, providing ideal conditions to spot Tigers. The Magdhi zone is another top area for Tigers as well as Leopards, Sloth Bears, Spotted Deer and exotic birds. Khitauli is excellent for sighting Tigers, Leopards and Sloth bears lazing in bamboo thickets.

In addition to core zone safaris, Bandhavgarh offers special safaris in buffer zones like Panpatha, Dhamokhar and Sitarah. Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve Safari: Tips for an Exciting Experience

Bandhavgarh Tiger Safari Booking - The Earth Safari

Embarking on a safari adventure in Bandhavgarh National Park is an exhilarating opportunity to witness India's stunning wildlife in its natural habitat. To make the most of your safari experience and increase your chances of spotting the incredible Bengal Tiger and other exotic creatures, consider the following tips:

Choose the Right Season: The best time to visit Bandhavgarh for wildlife viewing is during the dry season, from October to June. The lack of dense vegetation and accessible water sources during this time increase your chances of wildlife encounters.

Book Safaris in Advance: Bandhavgarh can get quite crowded during peak seasons, so it's advisable to secure your Bandhavgarh National Park safari booking and accommodations well in advance. This ensures you have access to the park when you want to go.

Go for Multiple Safaris: One safari may not be enough to spot elusive creatures like tigers. Consider multiple safaris during your stay to increase your chances. Morning and afternoon safaris offer different lighting conditions and animal activity.

Choose an Experienced Guide: A knowledgeable and experienced Bandhavgarh safari guide can make a significant difference in spotting wildlife. They know the park's terrain, animal behavior, and the best locations for sightings.

Silence and Patience: During the safari, maintain silence and patience. Keep noise to a minimum, as sudden loud noises can startle animals and drive them deeper into the forest. Also, wildlife sightings often require patience and a keen eye.

Bring Binoculars and Cameras: Binoculars can help you spot animals at a distance, while a good camera can capture those magical moments. Make sure to bring adequate zoom lenses and a pair of binoculars.

Respect Wildlife and Rules: Always maintain a safe distance from animals, and never attempt to feed or disturb them. Follow the park's rules and guidelines to ensure both your safety and the animals'.

Stay Hydrated and Wear Appropriate Clothing: Bandhavgarh's climate can be hot, so staying hydrated is essential. Wear comfortable, lightweight clothing and don't forget sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses.

Respect the Environment: Leave no trace. Ensure that you don't litter and avoid disturbing the park's delicate ecosystem. Respect nature and fellow travelers.

Enjoy the Whole Experience: While the tiger is the star of the show, don't forget to appreciate the park's diverse flora and fauna. Take in the sights, sounds, and smells of the wilderness for a holistic experience.

By following these tips, you can enhance your Bandhavgarh Jungle Safari experience and create lasting memories of India's incredible wildlife and natural beauty.

About Bandhavgarh National Park

The lush forests of bamboo and sal will welcome you into nature’s lap as you enter the “brother fort”. The name “Bandhavgarh” is due to the presence of an ancient fort on the mountain. It was believed that lord Rama has gifted the fort to his younger brother and hence the name Bandhav (Bother) Garh (Fort).  Bandhavgarh National Park  is one of the very famous parks in central India. The beauty of Bandhavgarh leaves every nature lover spellbound.

Although  Bandhavgarh National Park  is a relatively small park, in the last few years, this former game reserve has become one of India’s most prominent National Parks. The total area of  Bandhavgarh National Park  is 1161 sq. km, with a core area of 624 sq. km and a buffer of 537 sq.km. It was declared as a National park in 1968.

The Baghels ruled the area for a long time. Later the Maharaja of Rewa declared the fort as his summer palace and the adjoining area as their hunting ground. Later hunting was banned and it was declared as a protected area. Today Bandhavgarh is a popular tiger reserve and has three different zones for safari and tourism named Tala zone, Khaitauli Zone, and Magadhi Zone.

Closest Airport : Jabalpur (187 km) Closest Railway Station : Umaria (35kms), Katni (97kms), Jabalpur (187 km)

Tour concludes with Happy Memories !!

There is a saying about the Park that goes: "In any other Park, you are lucky if you see a tiger. In Bandhavgarh, you are unlucky if you don't see (at least) one."

Charger, a tiger so named because of his habit of charging at elephants and tourists (whom he did not harm), was the first healthy male known to be living in Bandhavgarh since the 1990s, as well as a female known as Sita.

Charger once appeared on the cover of National Geographic and is considered the second most photographed tiger in the world.

Almost all the tigers of Bandhavgarh today are descendants of Sita and Charger.

Three entry gates are made for safari vehicles to enter the park.

  • Tala- declared as a premium zone.

Other than core area, buffer area is also open for tourism and has 3 entrance gates.

For safari bookings one has to do it online via the Madhya Pradesh booking portal.  Morning and evening safaris are available for tourism.  The safari timing change as per season and sunrise and sunset.

  • Morning Jeep: 6.00 A.M to 11.00 A.M. (entry allowed until 8.00 a.m.)
  • Afternoon Jeep: 3.00 P.M. until 6.00 P.M (entry allowed until 4.30 p.m.)

Each gate offers a safari permit to the exclusive area of that range and no vehicle is allowed to interchange the zones while on safari. The entry and exit gate for the vehicle has to be the same. The gypsy charges or vehicle charges are separate and one has to pay differently.

The tourists are not allowed to get down from the vehicle throughout the safari. A set of rules and regulation exists for tiger safari and the park guide is aware of that. One has to follow his instruction in order to follow the regulations.

For the gate entry one needs to produce identification documents of the tourists like passport/driving license/ pan card etc. For the foreigners the passport in original has to be shown.

Since the safari entry enter are located far from each other, the hotels/resorts are scattered in Tala village and other surrounding villages. The resorts range from low-budget, mid-budget to luxury range. Comfortable stay options are available for tourists with good tasty meals and other amenities. M.P government forest rest houses are also available.

Bandhavgarh National Park

Bandhavgarh tiger reserve.

Bandhavgarh takes its name from that of the most eminent hillocks around. It is part of the government’s ambitious Project Tiger established with the sole purpose of conserving and propagating the  tiger population in India.

Interesting Fact – Bandhavgarh

The name ‘ Bandhavgarh ’ is a concoction of two terms: ‘ Bandhav ’ meaning brother and ‘ Garh  meaning fort. A fort of the same name exists within the reserve complex and is believed to be Rama’s gift for his younger brother Lakshman on their way back to Ayodhya.

Safari in Bandhavgarh National Park

Both, Jeep and  Elephant Safaris   are available at Bandhavgarh . Even though the denizens of the park are now accustomed to both, it is crucial that proximity to them is guided by an expert watcher who is familiar with the ways of the wild.

The safaris are available in the early morning and late dusk. These are relatively cooler parts of the day when animals stroll out of their safe spaces.  The forest department makes use of elephants to track tigers . These elephants can then take you directly to tiger-spotting.

Charger – Most famous Tigers of Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve

Bandhavgarh is home to some of the very famous tigers. Charger, so named because of his habit of charging at elephants, was the first popular male tiger that lived here in the 1990s. He was the second most photographed tiger in the world and had made an appearance on the cover of National Geographic. His partner was the tigress Sita.

Almost all tigers in Bandhavgarh today are descendants of Charger and Sita . Their immediate next generation of Joita, Langru, and B2 kept well with the tradition of moving close to tourists and being photographed. Charger died in the year 2000.

In recent times, Bamera has been the most prominent tiger in Tala zone of Bandhavgarh. Blue Eyes and Mukunda are dominant males in Magdhi and Khitauli Zones.

Bandhavgarh in Monsoon

During the monsoon (July – September) , the park gets lush green but the core park is not open for tourists. However, safaris can be done in buffer zones.

Best time to spot tigers at Bandhavgarh National Park

It all depends on three things: Tiger’s mood, the expertise of the guide, and Your patience level. Tiger will come only in the area that has the capability to keep his mood happy.  This means the area must have his favorite prey, weather condition, vegetation, and most importantly water holes. Generally, the guide will try to make it easy to take you toward the tiger. His expertise in tracking the pugmarks, droppings, and how well he knows that specific tiger and the safari zone will determine the time to track this big cat. So now, after reading this, you might have come to know that it will take a lot of patience to track the Bengal tiger of Bandhavgarh national park. However, if you are lucky then spotting tigers in Summer might test your patience at a low level as compared to other seasons. Because during the summer, tigers are majorly seen near the water holes as they come there to beat the heat.

What We Do?

Bandhavgarh National Park has a rich history, associated with the flourishing medieval city of Bandhavgarh. The term BANDHAV means brother or friend. GARH word means fort. So, the overall meaning is Fort of a brother / friend. The name of the National Park is derived from this term. The fort is considered to be one of the marvels of ancient ‘Treta Yug’ period. The Baghels were the main rulers of the region in the medieval era for the longest period.

When the Baghels shifted capital city of their kingdom to Rewa, the Bandhavgarh region was somewhat cut-off. The region was later developed into a thick forest habitat for wild animals, mainly tigers. It was soon declared as a game reserve for the Royals.

As years passed by, rules shifted through various focal points, and ultimately in 1968, the State Government got the rights of the land and the forest. In the year 1982, it was declared a National Park. After 11 years, in 1993, the Park became a Tiger Reserve under the scheme of Project Tiger.

Bandhavgarh National Park

Bandhavgarh which in Sanskrit means Brother’s Fort is one of prime national parks of India, located in the Umaria district of Madhya Pradesh. The name of the park originates from the most renowned hillock of the locale, which was said to be given by Hindu Lord Rama to his brother ”Lakshmana” to keep an eye on Lanka. Bandhavgarh, with an area spread around 105 km 2  was declared a national park in the year 1968 and later on became a Tiger Reserve in 1993. The existing core region is spread over 716 km 2 . The buffer region is spread over the forest divisions of Umaria and Katni, and totals 820 km 2 .

This park has a wide range of biodiversity. The density of the tiger population at Bandhavgarh (8 Tiger per square km) is one of the highest known in India. The park has a huge breeding population of leopards, and various species of deer.

The Maharaja Martand Singh of Rewa captured the first white tiger in this region in 1951. This white tiger, Mohan, is now stuffed and on display in the palace of the Maharajas of Rewa.

Safari Zones in Bandhavgarh

Tala Zone: It is the oldest safari zone of Bandhavgarh and thus often considered as tantamount to Bandhavgarh National Park. Till year 2010, there was only one safari zone in Bandhavgarh, i.e. Tala zone and thus it created a unique impression in mind of wildlife lovers. Its name “Tala” is derived from a local village called Tala Village. Earlier it was a small village, located on the main road, connecting Umaria town to Manpur town-ship.

When Bandhavgarh village was not popular i.e. in early 90’s, Tala was unknown to the world but later with the gaining of popularity in wildlife tourism map of world, Tala village became an important landmark, referring to Bandhavgarh National Park.

As Tala was the oldest safari zone thus all the major Forest Department establishments like their office, ticket counter, interpretation center, police station etc. were established in Tala village, close to Tala entrance gate. Even now a-days, you will find a major gathering of people in this entrance gate. Famous Bandhavgarh Fort, Shesh Shaiya statue, origin  of Charanganga river is also in Tala zone. In comparison to all three core zones, the Tala zone is still very beautiful, photogenic and more green.

Safari Zones, cont.

Magadhi Zone:   is the core zone forest area of Bandhavgarh tiger reserve. It is just adjoining the Tala zone in the south-east forest of tiger reserve area. It is also referred to as Gate No. 2. After many years since the opening of Tala zone, Magadhi zone was opened for tourists to share the tourism burden of Tala zone and also to offer new forest area exposure to wildlife lovers, visiting Bandhavgarh. Just like Tala zone, Magadhi zone is also a popular core zone area thus tourists love to see this forest area. Famous Charger point of Bandhavgarh is also located in this zone.

Khitauli Zone:  came into existence after the year 2010. Before the year 2010, there was only one safari zone called Tala zone thus it is most popular among visitors. Khitauli and Magadhi zones were created later on due to which they are less popular in comparison to Tala zone. With the passage of time, they also gained popularity and now all 3 core zones, attractions majority of tourists, visiting Bandhavgarh tiger reserve. Khitauli zone is well known for Birding and herbivores animals sighting. Here prominently seen mammal species are Leopard, Nilgai, Spotted Deer, Wild Dog (Dholes). Regarding tiger sightings, which is undoubtedly the prime attraction among visitors, here summers are good in which tiger sightings go good. During peak summers, probability of tiger sightings increases which is evident from incidences in which local people have even seen tigers from main Umaria – Tala road as some marshy lands are adjacent to the road.

Aquilla and Inverdoorn are not typical safari destinations... they are fenced enclosures for the animals, who do not roam free....

Being November, and with christmas being a very busy period you may have left it too late to book something good..

Ivory Tree Lodge is a looong way from Cape Town.

In the Pilanesberg Reserve, in Northwest Province; about 1000 miles from Cape Town.

It would take you the better part of a day getting there, and the same, getting back to Cape Town.

You would have to fly to Johannesburg and then fly or road transfer (2.5 hours by road) from Johannesburg to Pilanesberg.

I am aware of Elephants and lions in Pilanesberg Game reserve. Are Rhinos in the reserve as well?

Due to time constraints, I would appreciate any advice on a one day (4 hour) tour.

Having been on game drives in east and southern Africa before, I never would have considered going to Inverdoorn or Aquila if it weren't for my relatives visiting. Nevertheless, knowing what to expect in advance I enjoyed the day for what it had to offer.

Pets are not allowed at Safari West. If you have a pet that is not a service animal, we ask that you respect the important work of service animals by not claiming that your pet is a service animal. Please see the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) description of a service dog noted below. This is for your safety, as well as that of your pet, fellow guests and the animals of the Safari West collection. Please do not leave your pet locked in a parked car!

Service Animal Policy

We welcome guests with special needs who bring their service animal to enjoy our facility and the wonderful creatures making their homes here. Our policy is to assist all guests in making their time at Safari West enjoyable. A service animal is defined as a dog that has been individually trained to do work or perform tasks for an individual with a disability. The task(s) performed by the dog must be directly related to the person’s disability. “Companion” and “comfort” dogs are not “service animals” protected by the ADA.

  • Service animals are permitted to visit Safari West. However, service animals are prohibited from all areas where our exotic collection is not separated from guests by a physical barrier.
  • Service animals may also be restricted in certain areas due to the sensitivity of our animal collection.
  • If you are spending the night, your service animal is allowed in one of our accessible tents.
  • Your service animals are restricted from accompanying guests while on tour.
  • Service animals must be housebroken.
  • Service animals may not display vicious or aggressive behavior toward other people or animals. This includes barking and/or growling. If your service animal is disruptive at any time, you will be asked to remove your service dog from the park.

If you need to bring your service animal, call (707) 579-2551 at least 72 hours in advance to make arrangements.

Rules, Safety, and Etiquette

Safari West is the home of more than 800 wild animals, with all their natural behaviors and instincts. They are not trained pets, so we must act in accordance with their world rather than expecting them to understand ours. We are pleased to offer you a truly enjoyable and memorable adventure on the Sonoma Serengeti, so to get the most from your visit, please keep these few common-sense safety rules in mind and practice your wild manners.

Respect our Wild Friends

  • Please stay at least three feet back from the animal enclosures.
  • These animals are not to be touched . Be especially aware of children who may not understand that these animals are not like your pets at home. They may bite, kick or otherwise defend themselves if startled.
  • If you see anyone harassing the animals, throwing objects or poking sticks into the animal enclosures, or teasing them in any way, please alert a staff member immediately.
  • Never feed the animals. They eat special diets in the wild, and the Safari West animal staff sees that they enjoy the same appropriate foods here. Snacks that you love can be harmful to them.
  • No running! The animals interpret running as a sign of danger and are likely to panic and hurt themselves.

Safari Truck Etiquette

We recycle! Throughout the lower area of the preserve are recycling bins. Please save your plastic water bottles, soft drink cans, and other recyclables until you can dispose of them in a bin. Children who wish to sit on the top of our double-decker truck must be at least 45 inches tall. Our guides stop occasionally along the drive to allow seat changes so that everyone who wants a top-tier ride will get a turn.

Lost and Found

Safari West is not responsible for lost items. Please keep a close eye on your belongings during the course of your stay as you will be exploring a large, mostly undeveloped preserve. Should you misplace an item, Safari West maintains a Lost and Found Location at the front office. Please check with us there if you should lose (or find) anything of value.

Welcome to Safari West!

We go to great lengths to ensure that our safari adventures are accessible to everyone and in compliance with all ADA requirements. If you or a member of your family have special needs due to mobility or sensory issues, please contact us and we’ll work with you to plan your safari excursion. Safari West is indeed a special place and we will do everything possible to provide our guests with equal enjoyment of the wonderful experience offered by our park.

Our classic safari vehicles are customized Dodge Power Wagons and are not ADA accessible and unfortunately are not equipped to handle wheelchairs or other mobility assisting devices. If a guest utilizing a wheelchair can safely transfer themselves unaided or with the assistance of a family member, friend, or personal assistant, the Classic Safari Tour remains a viable option.

For guests unable to transition into the Power Wagons, we are able to provide one customized vehicle capable of accommodating most wheelchairs. It requires advanced planning and has some restrictions on seating capacity. Please contact our reservations team at 707-566-3667 to discuss options.

We currently have two fully accessible tents on the property. Both rooms are fully wheelchair accessible and include appropriately equipped showers and bathroom fixtures. These rooms also feature designated parking spaces at the foot of the ramps for easy loading and unloading. They also benefit from close proximity to the restaurant, offices, and gift shop.

Service Animals

Service animals are welcome at Safari West; however, due to concerns about guest safety as well as the safety of the animal collection, service animals are restricted from all safari tours and anywhere where there isn’t a barrier between the collection and our guests. While service animals are welcome to join you in our overnight accommodations, they cannot join you on tour unless you have reserved a Service Animal Serengeti Trek. This variant on the paratransit Serengeti Trek foregoes the walking portion of the tour. Instead, it accesses as much of the lower grounds as possible from within the paratransit vehicle.

Hearing Impaired:

Because of the cost of live, on-demand certified interpreters, Safari West no longer pays for live, on-demand, in-person ASL interpreters.  However, guests with hearing impairments are welcome to bring their own live ASL interpreter and Safari West will waive the admission charge for the guest-provided interpreter.  Similarly, as a further reasonable accommodation, Safari West will provide a complimentary safari tour to a non-professional ASL signer for a hearing-impaired guest, e.g., friends or family members who sign for the guest.

Vision Impaired:

With advance notice, a tactile tour can be provided for a visually impaired guest. A sighted companion will almost always accompany a visually impaired visitor. Should this not be the case, the guest will be accompanied by one of our guest service personnel.

Safari West offers free parking to our guests. Our parking lot has several accessible parking spaces for disabled persons supplying a valid disability-parking placard. Additional reserved parking spaces for placarded vehicles may also be available upon arrival. If you or a member of your party has any special needs, please don’t hesitate to contact us at  707 566-3667

Let us help you plan the safari adventure of a lifetime at Safari West!

Safari Tour

400 Acres of Exploration

From cheetahs to lemurs, giraffes to wildebeest, there’s always something amazing waiting just around the bend. Alongside one of our highly-trained safari guides, head out on a 3-hour excursion to get up close and personal with nearly a thousand animals. With over ninety species making their homes here, Safari West truly is Sonoma county’s very own slice of the Serengeti.

Hit the Road

Climb aboard one of our custom safari vehicles and roll out to explore the Sonoma Serengeti. From the canvas-covered shade of the truck, go in search of the marvelous megafauna of Africa. Your expert guide will track down graceful giraffes, nimble impala, imposing cape buffalo and maybe even a few hulking rhinoceros. You never know what you’re going to find!

Take a Stroll

While the view from the safari truck guarantees a great look at the herds, some animals need a more subtle approach. On the safari walk, saunter through the Amani Oasis Aviary where demoiselle cranes preen along the path and scarlet ibis soar overhead. Come face-to-face with a black-and-white colobus monkey, search out a cleverly camouflaged cheetah and watch the courtly parade of flamingos around their lagoon home.
