7 day Southwest National Parks Grand Canyon Tour

Great adventure trip. Guide Joseph is personable and attentive to the needs and quirks of each traveler. His extensive knowledge of the region's geology, history, animals and plant life enhanced our incredible trip. He gave us recommendations for hikes commensurate with individual abilities in Zion and Bryce Canyon national Parks. Joseph led hikes in the spectacular Arches and Canyonlands National Parks where we spent 2 nights in Moab, Utah. Some of our group chose to relax in Moab on the second day, while the rest of the group hiked different trails for more amazing views. Next were the stunning views of Monument Valley and Navajo Nation followed by a snowy Grand Canyon. Optional side trips: Antelope Canyon should not be missed. The Navajo taco dinner was tasty and informative. The hummer tour was unremarkable. Unfortunately, weather grounded the Grand Canyon helicopters.

Mighty 5 From Las Vegas

Excellent tour of the Mighty 5 in Utah. Our guide Robin was knowledgeable and accommodating throughout the tour. Just enough time was allocated for hiking the trails, viewing the sites in the distance and even visiting the Visitor Centers in each park. Hotel/motel accommodations were good and chosen for access to restaurants. Lunch stops with corresponding places to eat were well planned and the food and service was good. We thoroughly enjoyed our time.

Chad is a great driver and guide. He gave us so much useful information and insights to the places we hiked and walked to and through. Chad has a thirst for knowledge and looks up our questions and later shares the information with us. I liked most of the hotels and motels we went to.

Yellowstone and Grand Tetons Adventure Tour

Yellowstone and Grand Tetons Adventure

Tim was a great tour guide. He was knowledgeable, helpful, and always upbeat. Time with the wildlife expert was phenomenal. the tour itself was excellent. The good ranking has to do with communications from Intrepid Travel, which were poor and lead to changed air flights and other headaches.

Hike Alaska: Valdez and Wrangell St Elias Tour

Hike Alaska: Valdez and Wrangell St Elias

It was a very fun and adventuresome trip. The tour guide was well organized and hard working. The only problem was one of the camp sites was pretty primitive compared with the "KOA-style" campgrounds advertised by the company.

WOW! what an adventure! I had never been to Alaska before and was a little nervous about going by myself, but Dave, Natalie, and Carolina made everyone feel so welcome. I settled right in. During the 9 days on the trip, we saw Humpback Whales, Orcas, Sea Otters, Sea Lions, Seals, Dahl Sheep, Moose, Glaciers, Tons of Eagles, and I did the Bear Viewing trip to Lake Clark which was the Adventure of a Lifetime. we saw over 20 Brown Bears and 5 or 6 within 20 feet away. I had such a great time, I already booked the Denali trip for next Summer!

Reviews of Small Group tours to USA

Everything was great organized, our CEO Megan was so kind and well prepared.
Did the 3 day mini park explorer tour to Zion, Bryce, Monument Valley, Antelope Canyon and Grand Canyon. Joe and Adrian, our guides, were exceptional and made the trip comfortable and very memorable. They were knowledgeable, helpful, accommodating to special requests, and very approachable. Great planning, incredible views and hikes, a real window to the American southwest. This was my second tour with Bindlestiff and I highly recommend traveling with them!

United States Tours

Man leading group on horseback in Arizona, USA

Every day is Independence Day

Big and flashy, subtle and sophisticated, or homespun and disarmingly familiar, the United States has it all... a country where in the west so admired Celebrity and Pop Culture exists side by side with untouched wilderness. With so many cities and natural wonders spread across 8 million square kilometres of freedom, it's no surprise that the United States are the birthplace of the modern road trip. Few places on Earth can claim the variety, scope and scale of the United States, and its melting pot of influences from around the world has made for a culture rife with – and proud of – its contradictions. On a trip through the United States you should not miss a walk through Alaska's Denali National Park, a trip to the Kenai Peninsula or a nighttime stroll through New York. The charm of this country lies in adventure and exploration, in the enjoyment of American cuisine and in contact with the people, so that one takes home a lot of stories and a lot of unforgettable memories.

Best time to visit united states.

Being such a large country, the weather in the US is different depending on which area you are in. Summer (June to August) is the peak travel season due to school holidays, but it can be uncomfortably hot in the desert areas and the south.

The shoulder seasons of spring and autumn are generally considered to be the best times to visit, but the weather is still highly variable and these may be the wettest times in some parts of the country (such as the Pacific Northwest ). Winter can be cold in the northern states, but quiet in other areas, which can make it a pleasant time to visit.

Culture and customs

With immigration playing a major part in the development of America, today the country is made up of many different cultures. It’s no wonder modern America is rich with a variety of cultural traditions, cuisines, religions and festivals. Because of this, a large diversity of holidays are celebrated in America. Annual holidays like  Independence Day  and Thanksgiving are usually celebrated by all regardless of religion or political persuasion, and give people a chance to reconnect with family and friends around the dinner table or grill.

From sports to soul music, popular culture to philosophy, and fine art to folk art, the tastes and desires of Americans vary around the country. A love of sport unifies the nation - it doesn’t matter if you live in a city loft or out in the country, sports like ice hockey, basketball, baseball and football all attract a strong following.

Many Native Americans live on reservations and fight to retain their traditions and preserve their heritage, although when visiting reservations don’t be surprised to see Native Americans wearing modern clothing. With much of the language and many of the customs lost over the years, Native Americans strive to live a life of deep spirituality and in connection with the earth, as their ancestors did for centuries.

Check out our range of  experiences in the United States that amplify BIPOC cultures .

Eating and drinking

Intrepid believes that one of the best ways to experience a country is by eating! Whether you're sampling street food, savouring cheap eats or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world.

With a variety of international influences, try Creole cuisine in New Orleans, traditional Jewish fare like bagels and pastrami sandwiches in New York, and barbecue in Texas. America’s got everything, from burger joints to taco shacks, organic cafes to refined Michelin-starred restaurants.

Geography and environment

From the lush everglades of Florida, through the red-hot deserts of Nevada and on to the urban jungles of New York and Philadelphia, the United States has many different environments and ecosystems within its boundaries. Sharing borders with Canada in the north and Mexico in the south, the United States has deserts, glaciers, freshwater lakes, rapid-filled rivers, mountain ranges, sprawling plains, forested national parks , beaches and bays.

The major national parks of America – Yellowstone, Zion, Yosemite, Bryce Canyon, Denali and Joshua Tree offer a glimpse into what much of America looked like before development. Lush vegetation, majestic mountains and sparkling lakes give deer, moose, bears, bison and many other species of wildlife a fertile home to live in.

When traveling, you’re likely to see modern cities filled with traffic, skyscrapers and high-density housing, as well as sleepy towns, trailer parks and Native American reservations. A complex network of highways connect the major cities, making overland travel a popular choice with visitors and locals alike. The great American road trip is still alive and well.

History and government

As one of the world’s most influential nations, major moments and events in American history ripple throughout the rest of the world. The American people are known for their resilience and irrepressible nature, and it is this spirit that allows them to continue to contribute to the world economically, scientifically and creatively.

In recent history, America has enjoyed the historic highs of the moon landings and the devastating lows of Hurricane Katrina. The world has seen American companies like Apple, Facebook, Microsoft and Starbucks change the face of the world. And people like Steven Spielberg, Lance Armstrong, Maya Angelou and Sidney Poitier create masterpieces, break records and win countless awards.

Top 10 must-see cities in the US

1. new york.

You can be anyone you want to be in NYC. Indulge your artistic side at MoMA, mingle with the Gordon Geckos on Wall Street, cheer like a pro at a Yankees game or kick back at a bar with a Manhattan and a new pair of Jimmy Choos.

2. San Francisco

San Francisco is made of sunshine, seafood and a whole lot of hills. This is the place to embrace your inner (or outer) bohemian. But it's not all 'flowers in your hair' and free thinking, be sure to take a ferry to Alcatraz and scoff down a clam chowder at Fisherman's Wharf.

3. New Orleans

The Caribbean meets France and Africa in New Orleans. Music is everywhere, and so are the friendly faces. The city comes to life after dark so have an afternoon nap, get some comfortable shoes on and get ready to bar hop the night away.

4. Las Vegas

Hello Lady Luck! Days somehow disappear in the hedonistic blitz of color, light, showgirls, casinos and offers too good to refuse. Try to escape the endless buffets to catch a real Las Vegas show; there's everything from death-defying acrobats to Elvis on offer.

The financial and political powerhouse of Chicago has been the home of two of the most influential people in the world - President Obama and Oprah. Famed for its distinctive architecture, booming performing arts scene and sports-mad locals, the 'Windy City' shouldn't be missed.

The air is warmer, the clothes smaller and the colors are somehow brighter in Miami. Jewish, Latin and Caribbean cultures blend to make a heady mix of great food, even better music and a nightlife filled with the spirit of fiesta. Hang out on perfect beaches, spot classic cars and gaze at the beautiful people as they strut their stuff.

7. Los Angeles

Search beyond the stardust of Hollywood and the excessive price tags of Rodeo Drive, to find the true essence of Los Angeles. Home to a melting pot of cultures, uber-cool restaurants, a hip art scene and the eclectic vibe of Venice Beach, LA is so hot right now!

The birthplace of grunge music and iconic super-companies like Microsoft, Boeing and Starbucks, Seattle offers so much more than great coffee. Markets packed with fresh produce, a harbor perfect for boating, vibrant public art and a thriving live music scene combine to make Seattle a must-see city.

History comes alive in the heritage-filled streets of Memphis. Whether it's at Elvis Presley's Graceland, the lively blues clubs and restaurants of Beale Street or the moving Civil Rights Movement Museum, it could be said that the soul of America lives in Memphis.

One of America's oldest cities, Boston is evolving. Working class neighborhoods are being gentrified, the industry is giving way to tech start-ups and modern architectural treasures sit alongside brown-stone buildings. Despite the change, get chatting to locals about the Red Sox and you'll soon find you're definitely in Boston.

It’s no wonder many people choose to do their clothes shopping in the United States. With iconic department stores offering a wide range of labels, and vintage/charity stores stocking American fashion classics like distressed denim jeans and leather cowboy boots, shopping in America is fun. Known for having great sales and even better customer service, it’s well worth leaving room in your backpack for a few extras. Please note that unlike in many other countries, tax isn’t included in the ticketed price.

It's a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country. Australia and New Zealand generally have strict quarantine laws.

Festivals and events

Mardi Gras, or Fat Tuesday, marks the end of the Carnival season in New Orleans. Witness a chaotic collision of lively music, colorful costumes, masquerade masks, soul food and joyful 'krewes' at the parades, parties and masquerade balls in late February every year.

Cinco de Mayo

Cinco de Mayo is an annual festival celebrated on 5 May to mark the day when an army of 4,000 Mexican soldiers defeated the French Empire in the Battle of Puebla in  Mexico .

Is tipping customary in the US?

Tipping is very much a part of the culture in the United States. Tips are expected at restaurants, cafes and diners, as well as by taxi drivers, valet attendants, porters and hotel maids.

People working in the service industry generally receive low wages and therefore rely upon tips as a major source of income.

In general, leave 15 to 20% of the bill at places serving food and a few dollars to bartenders and hotel staff who provide a personal service like carrying bags or cleaning your room.

What is the internet access like in the US?

Internet access is excellent in the US, and internet cafes and Wi-Fi hot spots are easily found in most cities and major towns.

Cell phone coverage is excellent in most parts of the US although coverage may be patchy in remote, mountainous areas like national parks and canyons. Ensure global roaming is activated before you arrive.

What are the toilets like in the US?

Western-style flushable toilets are the norm in the US.

What will it cost for a…?

Prices can vary between states, but on average, here's what you can expect to pay for a:

  • Dinner at a mid-range restaurant = USD $20-40 per person
  • NYC one-way subway ticket = USD $3.00

Can I drink the water in the US?

Drinking water from taps in the US is considered safe unless otherwise marked. For environmental reasons, try to use a refillable water bottle rather than buying bottled water.

Are credit cards accepted widely in the US?

Major credit cards are widely accepted by stores in the US. Smaller cafes and shops may not accept credit cards, so ensure you carry enough cash to cover small purchases.

What is ATM access like in the US?

ATMs are common in the US, so finding one won't be a problem in most towns and cities.

What kind of transport will I use in the United States?

Intrepid believes half the fun of experiencing a new country is getting there, and getting around once there! Where possible, Intrepid uses local transport options and traditional modes of transport - which usually carry less of an environmental impact, support small local operators and are heaps more fun.

Depending on which trip you're on while in the US, you may find yourself traveling by:

Take in the sights while enjoying a ride on one of San Francisco’s icons – the streetcar.

What sort of accommodation will I stay in while traveling in the United States?

Traveling with Intrepid is a little bit different. We endeavor to provide travelers with an authentic experience to remember, so we try to keep accommodation as unique and traditional as possible.

When traveling with us in the US you may find yourself staying in a:

Spend a night sleeping in a hogan – a traditional Navajo structure made of logs, mud and stone and built with an open roof to view the sparkling night sky.

Reconnect with nature and enjoy staying in quaint log cabins throughout the country's beautiful national parks. Fall asleep to the rustling of trees and wake up to the sounds of birds.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

What travelers are saying

"We joined the Intrepid “Real Italy Food Tour” and enjoyed it thoroughly. Our tour guide, Micol, was very knowledgeable and provided us with lots of good information. It seems Micol knew many of the staff of the venues we visited, including the pasta making class we attended. Our group of 11 travelers was extremely compatible, which greatly added to the fun and enjoyment."

Trekking & Expeditions

"The tour had an excellent itinerary and activities, giving a broad overview of Peru - we loved it. Accommodations (with one exception) were great, and all had an included breakfast buffet. The tour's included activities (e.g. cooking class, pisco tour and tasting, potato park, boat tour of Isla Ballestas) were terrific. Appreciated the two included flights which saved a lot of driving time. Logistics were handled, and everything was smooth and easy (thanks to our CEO, Mary Chu!)."

United States Tour Selection Trips

  • The United States is a very big country. Don’t try to see it all at once; choose tours that concentrate on specific regions or you’ll spend a lot of time just getting from one place to another.
  • If you’re looking for an action-oriented tour, consider:
  • Whitewater  rafting  trips in the Northwest;
  • Horseback riding through the Southwest;
  • Hiking  trips through the Appalachians;
  • Skiing packages in the Rocky Mountains; and Scuba diving in Hawaii or Florida.
  • River cruising is growing in popularity in the U.S. -- you can cruise the  Mississippi River , the Intracoastal Waterway, the Columbia River; and many others to get a new perspective on the landscape.
  • If you’re a history or literary buff, look for river cruises that have the Civil War, Mark Twain or other themes of interest.
  • Don’t overlook the “flyover states” that lie between the East and West coasts; there’s much to discover in the Midwest, the South, Great Plains and Rocky Mountain states, including:
  • Chicago -- America’s “second city”;
  • The five Great Lakes;
  • Mt. Rushmore and the Badlands in South Dakota;
  • New Orleans, with French-influenced architecture and outstanding music and food;
  • The burgeoning cities of San Antonio, Houston and Austin in Texas;
  • The incredible rock spires in Utah’s Bryce Canyon National Park;
  • Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado;
  • The white-sand Gulf Shore beaches of Florida and Alabama; and Yellowstone and Glacier national parks in Wyoming and Montana.

Best Time to Travel to the United States

When is the best time to travel in the US? It depends on the time of year and region you're visiting. But, while the thought of heading to the cold northeast in winter might bring chills, there’s nothing like New York at Christmas time where you can ice skate in Central Park, ooh and aah at the shop windows on 5th Avenue bedecked with holiday decorations and catch the Radio City Rockettes Christmas Spectacular. That said, no matter where you’re coming from, here are some things to consider when traveling to the US:

Summer vacations for Americans fall between June and August. This is also the time when the majority of primary, secondary and college level schools and universities take their summer break. This is especially important when considering the big tourist attractions such as national parks , Disneyland and Los Angeles, both in California as well as the theme parks of Orlando, Florida. The lower airfare and lodging rates are a sign that the high summer travel season has ended come late August, early September.

Spring break time for students can start as early as mid-February and go to early April depending on the school but for most it falls the second week in March. As in summer, air travel and lodging is more expensive during this time of year. Orlando, Florida and Los Angeles, California again make the list for being overrun with tourists during Spring Break but also, Las Vegas, Nevada; Honolulu, Oahu; the island of Maui in Hawaii and Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.

At the end of the summer and winter ski seasons, in some heavily visited destinations and tourist attractions alike, you might find closed attractions, shops and restaurants or they may have shorter hours. The mud season in mountain ski towns refers to thawing snow that causes muddy conditions on back country trails. In Telluride, Colorado, for example, not all shops and restaurants are open during mud season and in the Fall after a summer season filled with festivals and other mountain attractions, the gondola shuts down for a period of time for maintenance.

Understand weather conditions before you go, pack and set expectations accordingly. There are always things to discover no matter the weather but if you abhor rain, it’s best not to travel to a destination during the rainy season if you can help it.

San Francisco, located on the central coast of California , doesn’t have the warmer temperatures of Southern California. Summer temperatures in San Francisco average in mid-60s with lows in the mid-50s, sometimes low-50s. Wind and fog can make these temps seem even colder.

In the Great Lakes region, there’s the late Fall and Winter lake effect. Cold air usually coming from Canada sweeps across the open waters of the lakes, warming and collecting moisture from the relatively warm, unfrozen waters. As this air rises, clouds form and grow. They are capable of producing snow at a rate of 2-3” or more per hour. Heavy snow may be falling in one location while just a mile or two away it can be sunny.

Rain is another consideration. Several locations in Oregon and Washington top the list for US locations with the heaviest annual precipitation with levels between 100-130” per year. And in Rochester, New York, located on the shores of Lake Ontario, it’s either raining or snowing 167 days of the year (on average).

Common US Tour Routes

  • New England
  • American south
  • Pacific Northwest

Start your trip planning in the U.S. by narrowing down the region or regions you’d like to visit. Each will have its own flavor and highlights whether you plan a trip to New England, the East Coast, American South, Southwest, Pacific Northwest or the West Coast. And in some regions like the West Coast, Seattle, Washington, will be very different from Los Angeles, California.

San Francisco, while a coastal town like Los Angeles will have its own very unique vibe.  Venturing into the wilds of Alaska or Hawaiian island hopping are yet other itineraries although they are more often stand-alone trips given their location quite far from the contiguous 48 states. Here are some common week plus to 2-week long tour routes in the U.S.

1. New England - Consider starting in historic Boston, Massachusetts then traveling north to the seaside towns of Portland and Bar Harbor, Maine. While in Maine, visit Acadia National Park then travel west through the White Mountains of New Hampshire to the four-season resort town of Stowe, Vermont. Traveling south will take you back toward Massachusetts.

Take a detour on your way back to Boston by continuing south through Connecticut and into Newport, Rhode Island. There you can gape at the opulent historic mansions that were built during Newport’s gilded age.

2. East Coast Cities - A trip through Boston, Massachusetts; New York City, New York; and Washington, D.C. will be an incredible one over ten days or so, depending on your pace of travel. East coast tours often include a visit to Niagara Falls in upstate New York and even the Canadian cities of Ottawa, Toronto and, or Quebec City given their proximity to New York.

If you have more time in the region, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania located between New York and D.C. is another destination to consider.  To venture out of the big cities, include charming Cape Cod in your itinerary. The Cape is a peninsula of Massachusetts with the resort islands of Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket just a short ferry ride away.

3. American South - On a trip through New Orleans, Louisiana; Memphis and Nashville, Tennessee; Asheville, North Carolina; Charleston and Savannah, South Carolina; and Georgia, Atlanta, you’ll discover country music, mouth-watering barbeque, the darker side of American history - slavery - the home of Elvis and more.

If you have more time, skip further south into Florida where you can visit Orlando, home to more than a dozen theme parks including Disney World and Universal. Miami, Florida's southern tip, is a popular vacation spot with its trendy nightlife, beaches, art, and plush hotels.

4. Southwest - An altogether different experience than those you’ll find in the South and on the East Coast is a trip to the American Southwest. A New Mexico, Southern Colorado, and Arizona itinerary often includes glitzy Las Vegas, Nevada which is just over four hours by car from Grand Canyon National Park (Arizona).

Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park on the Arizona Utah border is not far from the Grand Canyon. On a 17-mile drive through the Valley, try to avoid too much looking through the camera - the cluster of towering sandstone buttes is one of the most photographed places on Earth.

In Southern Colorado not far from Monument Valley, visit Mesa Verde National Park - you’ll be amazed to see how the Ancestral Puebloans lived. The town of Santa Fe, south of Mesa Verde and located in New Mexico, is the oldest capital city in the U.S.

It’s here you’ll find influences from Native Americans, Spanish, and the Old West.  Other areas to consider in the Southwest include the desert town of Sedona and Tombstone, Arizona; Taos, New Mexico; and Moab and Canyonlands of Utah.

5. Pacific Northwest - A trip to the Pacific Northwest might include Vancouver, Canada; Seattle, Washington; Portland, Oregon; and San Francisco, located on California’s central coast, even though most don’t consider it to be a Pacific Northwest city. Plan on some outdoor excursions in Vancouver, Seattle, and Portland as the mountainous areas surrounding these cities are lush with trees and vegetation.

The lofty peaks of the Cascade Range will give you plenty of activities to choose from no matter what time of year. And outside of San Francisco raising a glass in the world-renowned wine country of Napa and Sonoma is a must along with a visit to charming seaside communities like Carmel.

6. West Coast - Seattle, Washington; San Francisco and Los Angeles, California is a wonderful and diverse itinerary with so much to see and do not to mention the attractions located within a four-hour drive or less from each city. Seattle has many natural wonders outside its back door.

From San Francisco, it’s well worth visiting the wine country of Napa and Sonoma, the seaside communities both north and south along the coast, Yosemite National Park and Lake Tahoe. From Los Angeles, there’s Disneyland, Santa Barbara, Palm Springs, Joshua Tree National Park, and Laguna Beach among many other places to visit.

Cross Country US Tours

Told through innumerable books, songs, movies and television series, the lore of the American highway is ingrained in its culture. And on a guided cross country tour you can take one without having to worry about where the next gas station or rest stop is. You also get to leave timing between destinations to your tour guide. Best of all, you can see a great number of attractions in a relatively short period of time.

Most trips are under $200 a day. The most expensive trips take you to various attractions and cities in Alaska, a remote region requiring more logistics than trips in the lower 48. Trips in the US range from one to weeks with two weeks being more common. This gives you time not only to cover more ground but also, to get a better feel for what the region has to offer.

Note that tour companies may name a trip after the region where you’ll be spending the most time. This can be confusing but most trips have a map image so you can see the route. Typical cross country routes and sample itineraries:

Pacific Northwest/West Coast - On Cosmos’ Pacific Coast Explorer  for example , you’ll land in Los Angeles and from there drive north along the rugged Pacific Coast all the way to Oregon. Not to miss stops along the way include Santa Barbara, Carmel, San Francisco, the wine country, Redwood National Park and once in Oregon, Coos Bay. See what remains of Mt. St. Helens and ascending over 14,000 feet, Mt. Rainier on your way to the Emerald City of Seattle so called because of its forested surroundings.

East Coast into the Midwest/Great Lakes - Visit New York; Philadelphia; D.C. the Great Smoky and Blue Ridge Mountains; Nashville; Louisville; Detroit; Chicago and Niagara Falls on Intrepid Travel’s East USA Adventure .

West - Tours to the west are often focused on national parks in the region. These parks are wildly diverse and some of the most visited in the country.  On Trafalgar’s Scenic Parks tour, the trip will start 550 feet above the Las Vegas strip on the world’s tallest observation wheel. You’ll visit Zion, Bryce Canyon, Canyonlands and Arches National Parks in Utah; Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks in Wyoming; Mesa Verde National Park in Colorado and last but not least, the immense Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona before you return to Las Vegas.

Cross Country - These trips often start in New York. They take a southern route across the US. On Intrepid Travel’s New York to Las Vegas tour you’ll start in New York and head south to Washington, D.C. before touring to Nashville and Memphis in Tennessee, stopping along the way to camp in the spectacular Blue Ridge Mountains. From there, you’ll travel through Louisiana, Texas, New Mexico and Colorado. Your trip culminates with the stunning Grand Canyon and last but not least, Las Vegas.

Another cross country trip takes you along the famed Route 66. It was one of the first US highways linking Chicago to Santa Monica, in the county of Los Angeles. Highlights of Route 66 will give you the vibe of travel between the 1920s and 1960s and an appreciation for cultural and economic impact of Route 66. You’ll take some side trips, including a visit to the Grand Canyon.

What to Pack

Check weather conditions. When joining a tour, they will likely have a packing list to help you pack for maximum comfort and safety. Consider these travel essentials no matter where you are traveling:

A copy of your passport and credit/ATM cards with contact numbers kept separate

A notebook for the above which can also double as a travel journal

The right credit card - some charge foreign transaction fees, some do not. Some offer access to airport lounges.

American Culture

If you’ve read about the regions of the U.S., you have an idea of how difficult it is to describe American culture as anything but incredibly diverse. Its flavor comes from Indigenous habitants and immigrants of African, Asian, European, English and Pacific Island descent. People of Hispanic or Latino/a origin have also greatly influenced U.S. culture.

This is all the more reason why stereotypes, applied to most cultures as a matter of fact, generally don’t apply. After all, no matter where you travel in the world you discover that in actuality the stereotypes are only reflected in the behaviors of a few. In the U.S., the vast majority of people you meet will be friendly, hospitable, generous and open.

They will often smile if you make eye contact with them while walking along the street, for example, and they are a freedom-loving and creative people, highly influenced by technology and materialism.

U.S. Religion . While the vast majority of Americans consider themselves Christian, nearly every known religion and spiritual practice can be found in the U.S. It’s not uncommon to meet people who do not practice a particular religion or spirituality yet they still consider themselves to be religious or spiritual.

U.S. language . There is no one official language but Spanish, Chinese, French, and German are the most commonly spoken languages and in Hawaii, the official language is both English and Hawaiian. Business is conducted in English.

American Style . Fashion in the U.S., as you might have guessed, is varied. It’s also mostly casual and greatly influenced by movie and television celebrities. The Red Carpets of annual award shows are media frenzies complete with reviews that include the best and worst dressed right down the to the shoes and accessories.

American Sports . There are millions of sports fans across the U.S. American football has the highest number of fans but baseball, basketball, soccer, hockey, tennis, golf, wrestling/boxing, and auto racing have their share of fanatics. Sports played at the college/university level are also popular; again, football being number one.

Holidays in the U.S. Americans aren’t known for taking extended holidays. Generally, they take a week-long summer vacation and perhaps make a long weekend or week (especially in the case of Thanksgiving and Christmas) of a national holiday. Some Federal holidays aren’t recognized by businesses as they are for schools, the U.S. Postal Service, and government organizations. In addition to Easter (celebrated on a Sunday between late March and late April) and other holidays that may or may not be celebrated, there are several Federal holidays:

  • New Year’s Day - January 1
  • Martin Luther King Day: 3rd Monday in January
  • President’s Day: 3rd Monday in February
  • Memorial Day: last Monday in May
  • Independence Day: July 4
  • Labor Day: First Monday in September
  • Columbus Day: second Monday in October
  • Veteran’s Day: November 11
  • Thanksgiving Day: 4th Thursday in November
  • Christmas Day: December 25

Weather in the United States

Pinpointing a prime time to visit the United States based on weather is difficult. It’s a large country with varied terrain, coastlines and an expanse that crosses multiple latitudes.

Florida, in the south eastern U.S., is closer to the equator thus almost tropical and the Hawaiian Islands, 2,000 miles off the coast of California and even closer to the equator, are tropical .

Northernmost destinations like Montana, North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, the upper part of New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine see long, often frigid, snowy winters and moderately warm summers . In the northwestern U.S. you’ll find arctic conditions in the extreme north of Alaska and in Washington and Oregon, conditions are mild and quite rainy.

Mt. Rainier, on the Western slope of the Cascade Range in Washington, is the snowiest place in the U.S. receiving on average about 53 feet of snow per year.

Between the months of June and November, hurricanes can hit the coastal states on the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic (mostly southern Atlantic states). During the month of February and between April and June tornadoes can develop in a north/south swath between South Dakota and northern Texas called “Tornado Alley” and in “Dixie Alley,” an area between Oklahoma and Ohio.

There are four desert areas in the contiguous United States . These deserts extend from the southeastern tip of California and most of Nevada into western Utah, southern Arizona, southern New Mexico and the westernmost part of Texas.

They are the Mojave, home to Death Valley; the Sonoran, Chihuahuan and Great Basin Deserts. While winters can be cool, destinations like Palm Springs, California; Las Vegas, Nevada; Phoenix, Tucson, Scottsdale and Sedona, Arizona are desert cities that can be scorching hot during the summer .

Other notable weather patterns include high altitude Yellowstone National Park where even in July, temperatures only reach the mid-70s. Lows can hover around -20 degrees fahrenheit. In Chicago, Illinois, cold air can blast down from Canada’s arctic region dropping winter temperatures to around -18 degrees while in the summer, expect humidity with temperatures that can climb above 90 degrees.

It’s a warm, temperate climate in the central part of the eastern U.S. in places like Dallas, Texas; Memphis, Tennessee; New Orleans, Louisiana and Atlanta, Georgia. Winters are mild but plan for a hot, muggy visit if traveling during the summer.

Then, this evening, join your group for a meal to kick off your tour. What’s better to eat in New York than pizza? Head to Bryant Park to eat with an amazing view across to the Empire State Building. After that, your evening is your own – but if you’re looking to get in amongst the bustle of the city, why not head to Times Square for some sightseeing?

Day 2: New York

After grabbing some breakfast this morning, you’ll head across the Brooklyn Bridge, learning more about its fascinating history. Once you’re across the river, embark on the No Sleep ‘Til Brooklyn tour, where you’ll head to Brooklyn Heights, DUMBO, the Timeout Market and much more.

Ever wondered where the hipsters live? Well, they’re all in Williamsburg, so hop on a scenic ferry and head out to spy the area’s famous street art, vintage stores, and endless outdoor bars.

You’ve got another evening to explore at your own leisure, but feel free to ask your guide for the best local recommendations.

Breakfast today is a real New York staple – bagels! With your food in hand, listen to songs from the Beatles in Strawberry Fields, and explore the highlights of Central Park.

We’ll then take you to the High Line, an amazing green space elevated high above the city on abandoned train tracks. How many murals can you spot? This afternoon, you’re free to settle in and explore at your own pace. However, for some great low-cost museums, the National Gallery of Art and the National History Museum offer free entry and some truly incredible exhibits. If you’d rather stay outside, why not explore historic Georgetown?

Day 6: Boston

Up and at ‘em! It’s an early start today as you’re back on the Amtrak – bound for Boston! You’ll check into your new hostel mid-to-late afternoon, just in time for you to drop your bags and head to the Boston Common.

Take a wander through America’s oldest public park, all the way to the North End – also known as Little Italy! While you’re here, grab dinner and try a world-famous cannoli from Mike’s Pastry.

If you’d like, this evening why not try and catch a game at Fenway Park, home of the Boston Red Sox?

Day 7: Boston

This morning, make your way down to Long Wharf to board a boat from Boston Harbor. You’re getting a once-in-a-lifetime chance to get up close with the giants of the ocean – whales! You’ll spend your morning whale-watching off of the East Coast.

Once back on dry land, head to Quincy Market – first opened in 1826. Here, you can grab a spot of lunch and visit the hundreds of shops. While there are many of the usual big brands here, we recommend delving into the shelves of the Boston-based brands, where you’ll find all sorts that you won’t find anywhere else in the country.

Boston is one of America’s most historic cities, so it’s time to learn all about it! Explore the city’s Freedom Trail, where you’ll follow in the footsteps of Founding Fathers and many more. Along the way, you’ll see sights like the Park Street Church, Boston Common, and Faneuil Hall.

Then, it’s time to get your academic hat on with a trip to explore the campus of Harvard university – America’s oldest and most prestigious college! Back in the city, enjoy dinner with your fellow Coyotes.

Day 8: Las Vegas

You’ll check out early this morning, bound for the airport. It’s here that we leave the East Coast behind, and set our sights on the sunny climates of the West Coast! You’ll arrive in Las Vegas in the early afternoon, before meeting your Adventure Leader and the rest of your West Coast group at the entrance to Luxor Hotel’s Aurora Bar. Here, you’ll get a trip briefing, where you’ll learn about what else lies in store for you.

After that, it’s time to walk the Strip! Take in the hustle, bustle, and bright lights of Vegas – and break for dinner at Café Hollywood, a classic diner. Take a look at the Bellagio Water Show while you’re out and about!

If you’d like, we can point you towards some of the city’s best nightlife… don’t worry, you’ve got a relaxed start tomorrow!

Day 9: Las Vegas

Spend this morning relaxing by the Luxor’s pool, or check out Caesar’s Palace or the Venetian. However, be sure to meet back up in the early afternoon, where we’ll take you on the Viva Las Vegas tour! You’ll see the city’s best landmarks, like the Vegas sign, the Arts district, and Circus Circus!

This evening, enjoy dinner at Dona Maria’s, where you can try home-style tamales, fajitas – and margaritas! After, why not opt to take in one of Las Vegas’s legendary shows? These can range from magic shows to incredible Cirque du Soleil performances.

Day 10: Vegas, Seligman & Williams

This morning, transfer to the next destination on your Coast to Coast group tour… via a couple of iconic locations. Grab enough food to last you the day at Trader Joe’s – and then we’re off!

First of all, you’ll head to the Hoover Dam, where you’ll take a quick hike to the Mike O’Callagan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge and learn about this marvel of engineering. After this, stop to eat some of your food at the Locomotive Park in the scenic Kingman, Arizona.

Next, we’ll visit the rustic Seligman – birthplace of Route 66 and the inspiration for Pixar’s Cars . Explore the area and grab some iconic snaps, before we jump back in the bus – bound for Williams, Arizona! You’ll arrive at an amazing glamping site, where you’ll check into a cozy cabin before you grab dinner at the Cruiser’s Route 66 Café.

Day 11: Grand Canyon

This morning, it’s off in the morning to one of the world’s most remarkable sites – the Grand Canyon! You’ll have a free day for hiking and sightseeing at one of the world’s seven natural wonders. If you’d like a suggestion, we recommend following the Rim Trail around the area.

This evening, regroup at the Hopi House to watch the beautiful sunset – and wait for the stars to come out! We’ll then all return to the campsite, where we’ll sit around the fire and eat – what else? – s’mores!

Day 12: Williams & Las Vegas

We’re off this morning to head back to Vegas – via Williams! Before we get too comfy on the private van, you’ll get the chance to try an unmissable activity… axe throwing! If you’d rather now, you can opt to learn more about America’s complex history with firearms when you pay a visit to a local shooting range.

After that, you’ve got time for a spot of shopping, lunch, and wandering the cowboy-esque of Williams before we jump back in the van. We’ll transfer back to Vegas in the mid/late-afternoon, where you’ll then have a free night to explore the city as you wish! Why not visit the MOB Museum or the Star Wars-themed Millenium Fandom Bar?

Day 13: Santa Monica

We’re off to the final stop on your Coast to Coast group tour – Los Angeles! We’ll arrive in Santa Monica in the early afternoon, where you’ll have some time to explore the sights and shops of the 3 rd Street Promenade under your own steam.

This evening, opt to join your fellow travellers for a delicious meal at Trejo’s Tacos – before our next unmissable activity begins. We’ll take you for a stroll along the beach at sunset, before we all take part in the arcade challenge along the Santa Monica Pier!

Day 14: Santa Monica

This morning, you’ll take the metro to the iconic Sunset Boulevard, where you’ll get a chance to stargaze during the day at the Hollywood Walk of Fame! After this, we’ll treat you to a taste of California with a visit to In-N-Out Burger, before you enjoy some free time to explore the area. Why not check out the Hollywood Film Museum?

We’ll rendezvous in the mid-afternoon for your final unmissable activity – a hike from Griffith Park to the iconic Griffith Observatory! Along the way, you’ll get amazing views of the inimitable Hollywood sign, and you’ll arrive in time to watch the sun set over the City of Angels before you explore the Observatory.

Day 15: Farewell

The last day of your Coast to Coast group tour is a free day. Why not take the opportunity to hit one of LA’s most famous spots?

  • If you’re keen to make the most of your time in LA, you could opt to splash out on a day pass to Disneyland or Universal Studios!
  • If you decide to remain in Santa Monica, you could chill at Venice Beach, try inline skating on the boardwalk, or take a tour of the Paramount Studios.
  • If you want to give back to the local community, you could spend your day volunteering with Heal the Bay, helping to clean up California’s coastline.

This evening, bid farewell to your fellow Coyotes as your trip comes to an end!

America Ride On Tour 2024

The iconic multi-platinum-selling group America will celebrate their 54th anniversary with the Ride On Tour 2024! Known for their timeless magic and powerful performances, the Grammy Award-winning perennial classic-rock favorite will draw on their deep catalog of hits including signature song “A Horse with No Name,” a #1 hit on Billboard’s Hot 100 in 1972. On their way to becoming a global household name, America’s journey found them exploring a wide variety of musical terrain. Their best-known tunes, which also include “I Need You,” “Ventura Highway,” “Don’t Cross The River,” “Tin Man,” “Lonely People,” and “Sister Golden Hair” were cornerstones of 1970’s Top 40 and FM rock radio. From their formative years, America has been a band capable of transcending borders with its uplifting music and positive message. Embracing a rainbow of divergent cultures, America’s audiences continue to grow, comprising a loyal legion of first, second and third generation fans, all bearing testament to the group’s enduring appeal.

Stray Kids Confirm 2024 Tour Dates, Perform ‘Lose My Breath' on ‘Good Morning America'

Stray Kids staged a takeover of Good Morning America on Wednesday morning (May 15), dropping into the show's New York studios to take a few questions from fans before busting out a performance of their new single.

The first order of business for the eight-member K-pop band was confirming that they are headed out on a world tour this year. Rapper Felix verified the tease that designer Tommy Hilfiger dropped on the red carpet at the Met Gala, telling Lara Spencer, "We do have some good news. We are preparing a tour. Big news because it's been so long since we prepared for something so big. And so, yeah, we took this chance to prepare something for our fans. So exciting."

Dancer Bang Chan also took an audience question from a fan who wanted to know what the creative process was for making the band's latest single, "Lose My Breath." He said, "We got the chance to work with Charlie [Puth], it was a very good experience. Because he's very musically talented. There's a lot of things to learn. Overall, the project came out very, very well. So, hope you guys like it. Do you like it?"

The group them performed the song in studio, singing and dancing along to the song in front of a wall of flashing neon lights as the studio full of fans sang along and held up their armloads of tributes.

At press time the only announced dates for the group's tour were a July 12 gig at the Ippodromo SNAI La Maura in Milano, Italy, followed by a July 14 show in Hyde Park in London, and an August date at Lollapalooza in Chicago, which runs from the Aug. 1-4.

Nearly 44 Million Travelers Leaving Town for Unofficial Start of Summer

Second highest memorial day holiday travel forecast since aaa began tracking in 2000.

america group tours

WASHINGTON, DC (May 13, 2024) – AAA projects 43.8 million travelers will head 50 miles or more from home over the Memorial Day holiday travel period*. This year’s total number of travelers is a 4% increase over last year and comes close to matching 2005’s record of 44 million Memorial Day travelers.

“We haven’t seen Memorial Day weekend travel numbers like these in almost 20 years,” said Paula Twidale, Senior Vice President of AAA Travel. “We’re projecting an additional one million travelers this holiday weekend compared to 2019, which not only means we’re exceeding pre-pandemic levels but also signals a very busy summer travel season ahead.”

america group tours

Road trips are expected to set a record. AAA projects 38.4 million people will travel by car over Memorial Day weekend, the highest number for that holiday since AAA began tracking in 2000. The number of drivers this year is up 4% compared to last year and 1.9% higher than in 2019. Traveling by car is appealing for many people because of the convenience and flexibility it provides. AAA car rental partner Hertz says Orlando, Denver, Atlanta, Boston and Las Vegas are the cities displaying the highest rental demand , with the busiest pick-up days projected to be Thursday, May 23 and Friday, May 24.

This Memorial Day weekend drivers can expect similar gas prices as last year when the national average was roughly $3.57.  Pump prices rose this spring but have held somewhat steady in recent weeks. Prices may creep higher as the summer driving season gets underway. The wildcard remains the cost of oil, and unlike last year, there are now two wars – in the Middle East and Ukraine – that could roil the oil market.

Airports are bracing for a spike in travelers. AAA expects 3.51 million air travelers this holiday weekend, an increase of 4.8% over last year and 9% jump compared to 2019. This will be the most crowded Memorial Day weekend at airports since 2005, when 3.64 million flew for the holiday as the travel industry finally rebounded post 9/11. This Memorial Day weekend, air ticket prices are comparable to last year. AAA booking data shows a 1% to 2% increase in prices for domestic flights. Several factors play into how much travelers pay for airfare, including destination, number of stops, and fare class. For example, passengers who book nonstop flights with seat selection and carry-on bags included will likely pay more than those who select basic economy with a layover.

Nearly two million people are expected to travel by other modes of transportation, including buses, cruises, and trains. AAA projects 1.9 million people will take these other modes of transportation, an increase of 5.6% compared to last year. “This category took the biggest hit during the pandemic with fewer people taking public transportation or not cruising at all,” Twidale said. “Now – five years later – we’re back to 2019 numbers. Travel demand has been soaring, and long holiday weekends create the perfect windows for getaways.”

Best/Worst Times to Drive and Peak Congestion by Metro

INRIX , a provider of transportation data and insights, says drivers leaving Thursday or Friday should hit the road early to avoid mixing with commuters. Travelers going back home on Sunday or Monday should avoid the afternoon hours when return trips will peak.

“Travel times are expected to be up to 90% longer than normal. Travelers should stay up to date on traffic apps, 511 services, and local news stations to avoid sitting in traffic longer than necessary,” said Bob Pishue, transportation analyst at INRIX.

Please note that the times listed below are for the time zone in which the metro is located.

Top Destinations

This Memorial Day weekend, travelers are seeking theme parks and entertainment venues in Orlando, New York, Las Vegas, and Southern California. Seattle, Anchorage, and Vancouver rank high because of the popularity of Alaska cruises this time of year. Florida beaches and cruise ports will also be packed. European cities dominate the international list. The top 10 domestic and international destinations below are based on AAA booking data.

Travel Trends

As travelers make plans for summer and beyond, AAA Travel has identified the following trends:

  • Bucket Lists : Travelers taking once-in-a-lifetime trips
  • Milestones : Families booking anniversary, retirement, and family reunion trips
  • Asia : More travelers interested in visiting Asia, especially Japan
  • Solo Trips : More people, especially women, interested in traveling by themselves
  • Luxury Vacations : More travelers seeking high-end cruises and tours
  • Trains : Many travelers interested in rail vacations across New England, Canada, and Europe
  • Adventure in Nature : Travelers booking trips to Antarctica, Africa, and South Pacific

  Travel Agent Survey

  • Travel Insurance : 51 % of agents say more travelers are interested in protecting their trips
  • 77% of agents say ocean cruises
  • 70% of agents say all-inclusive vacations
  • 67% of agents say river cruises

Holiday Travel Forecast Methodology

In cooperation with AAA, S&P Global Market Intelligence (SPGMI) developed a unique methodology to forecast actual domestic travel volumes. The economic variables used to forecast travel for the current holiday are leveraged from SPGMI’s proprietary databases. These data include macroeconomic drivers such as employment, output, household net worth, asset prices, including stock indices, interest rates, housing market indicators, and variables related to travel and tourism, including gasoline prices, airline travel, and hotel stays. AAA and SPGMI have quantified holiday travel volumes going back to 2000.

Historical travel volume estimates come from DK SHIFFLET’s TRAVEL PERFORMANCE/Monitor SM . The PERFORMANCE/Monitor SM is a comprehensive study measuring the travel behavior of U.S. residents. DK SHIFFLET contacts over 50,000 U.S. households each month to obtain detailed travel data, resulting in the unique ability to estimate visitor volume and spending, identify trends, and forecast U.S. travel behavior, all after the trips have been taken.

The travel forecast is reported in person-trips. In particular, AAA and SPGMI forecast the total U.S. holiday travel volume and expected mode of transportation. The travel forecast presented in this report was prepared the week of April 15, 2024.

*Memorial Day Holiday Travel Period

For this forecast, the Memorial Day holiday travel period is defined as the five-day period from Thursday, May 23 to Monday, May 27, 2024.

AAA Travel Agent Survey Methodology

AAA clubs distributed surveys to a random sample of their travel agents between March 18 and March 29, 2024 to understand recent traveler trends over the past 60 days. 186 AAA agent responses were collected from 13 AAA clubs (representing 97% of AAA membership overall as of February 2024).

Holland America Line Previews New GAP Benefits for Travel Advisors Starting With 2025 Alaska, Europe and Canada/New England Cruises

New Group Advantage Program amenities now available for bookings made for cruises starting in summer 2025

Seattle, Wash., Feb. 29, 2024 — Holland America Line is enhancing its Group Advantage Program (GAP) for travel advisors starting with bookings for summer 2025 on Alaska cruises and Cruisetours, Europe and Canada/New England . The additional amenities, which continue to reflect the brand’s premium onboard experiences, will help travel advisors grow their group business and make family reunions, weddings and affinity groups even more enticing to book.

Holland America Line’s new GAP menu features more than 25 different amenities from which to choose, plus GAP Packages that cater to weddings, family reunions and more.

“Groups are a popular niche for Holland America Line, and we want to continue to help our travel advisors grow this sector with a competitive program and enticing GAP amenities,” said Rob Coleman, Holland America Line’s vice president of North America sales. “We aim to maintain an open dialogue with our travel partners to develop the best program that allows us to be mutually successful in the groups arena and ultimately offer guests a world-class experience on Holland America Line.”

Holland America Line understands that groups come in all sizes, so travel advisors have a variety of options — whether booking an intimate wedding or a large family reunion. The Connections program for small affinity groups is for 24 guests or less, standard groups range from 16 to 32 beds, while large groups are more than 32 beds.

Have It All Early Booking Bonus — For a Limited Time

Guests who book early on 2025 Alaska cruises and Cruisetours, Canada/New England and Europe cruises can take advantage of 60% off Holland America Line’s top amenities included in their fare. When booking with the Have It All Early Booking Bonus, guests receive specialty dining, shore excursions, low fare guarantee and prepaid crew appreciation — plus, free upgrades to premium Wi-Fi and the Elite Beverage Package. Have It All is a commissionable add-on for travel advisors.

Small Affinity Groups Receive Perks with Connections Program

Through Holland America Line’s Connections program, groups of 24 or fewer guests enjoy added incentives. When booking a smaller group, travel advisors can take advantage of a tour conductor berth added for every 10 berths (up to two tour conductor berths) and earn an extra two GAP points per group to be used for a variety of amenities. This program can be combined with additional promotional offerings, and no group deposits are required.

Affinity Groups Receive Special Perks

For family reunion packages, when eight or more staterooms are booked the group receives exclusive amenities in lieu of GAP points. These include a free within-stateroom category upgrade for the head of the family, a $25 onboard credit per person, Pinnacle Grill lunch for all family members and a $20 photo credit per stateroom.

Guests who say “I do” with Holland America Line and book their wedding group of eight or more staterooms receive a free within-stateroom category upgrade for the wedding couple, a complimentary wedding cake for up to 16 guests, a Pinnacle Grill lunch per guest, chocolate-dipped strawberries and a bottle of sparkling wine in each stateroom, and a private wine tasting per guest with wine purchased from Holland America Line’s wine cellar, all in lieu of GAP points.

Culinary and wine groups of 15 or more guests receive one wine tasting event on seven-day voyages and two wine tastings on cruises 10 days or longer. The group can enjoy wine purchased from Holland America Line’s wine cellar or bring their own without a corkage fee during the event.

Other Amenities Designed to Facilitate Custom Groups

Holland America Line’s culinary excellence is celebrated with GAP amenities that showcase the premium specialty dining experience, including lunch or dinner at Pinnacle Grill, and dinner at Canaletto or Tamarind.

Other available GAP menu amenities include the new $25 or $50 shore excursion credit per person; new $25 or $50 bonus commission per person; Wine Cellar No. 1 with one bottle of wine per stateroom; bon voyage sparkling wine in each stateroom; $20 photo credit; sparkling wine and strawberries; and a cocktail party with hot hors d'oeuvres.

On the land portion of Holland America Line’s Alaska Cruisetours, GAP amenities include lunch aboard the McKinley Explorer railcar, admission to Diamond Tooth Gerties in Dawson City, boxed lunch on the Tundra Wilderness Tour in Denali and $25 in Denali Dollars.

GAP points are based on the voyage, and selections must be made 90 days prior to the cruise departure.
