What is Come from Away About?
‘Come From Away’ is a heart-warming musical based on the true events of September 11, 2001. When 38 planes were ordered to land unexpectedly in the small town of Gander, Newfoundland, the town’s population nearly doubled overnight.
The locals opened their hearts and homes, hosting this international community of strangers–spurring unexpected camaraderie under extraordinary circumstances.
The narrative focuses on the relationships and friendships formed during this time, showcasing the best of humanity in the face of tragedy. It tells the story of real people who were part of these events, from the residents of Gander to the ‘come from aways’, the passengers who landed in an unfamiliar place.
The musical beautifully portrays the generosity, kindness, and compassion that emerged during these challenging times, making it a deeply moving experience for audiences worldwide.
Meet the Characters: From Locals to Passengers
The vibrant cast of characters is one of the most captivating aspects of Come From Away. From the spirited locals of Gander to the global passengers stranded far from home, each character brings their unique perspective to the unfolding events.
Among the locals, you’ll meet figures like:
- Beulah Davis
- Claude Elliott
- Janice Mosher
- Bonnie Harris
All real residents of Gander, including the quick thinking town mayor, whose stories are beautifully portrayed in the musical. These unsung heroes stepped up in the face of crisis, providing support and hospitality to the stranded passengers and organizing activities to keep spirits high.
On the other side of the remarkable true story, we have the passengers, inspired by real characters caught in similar situations, like:
- Female American Airlines Captain Beverly Bass
- Kevin Tuerff
- Nick and Diane Marson
These individuals, hailing from all corners of the globe, found themselves in an unexpected situation, their lives forever impacted by the events in a small Newfoundland community, Gander.

The amazing team behind Come From Away includes writers Irene Sankoff and David Hein. They’re a Canadian couple who wrote this famous Broadway musical.
They learned about the story from Michael Rubinoff and used their Canadian background and personal stories, including tales of New York firefighters, as inspiration.
Sankoff and Hein created a musical that really captures the feelings of the story. It’s a very moving experience for the audience. Their work on Come From Away has really raised the bar for musical theatre.
The musical’s artistic vision at the Phoenix Theatre is led by Christopher Ashley, who won a Tony Award for his directing. Ashley has been the head of the La Jolla Playhouse since 2007.
He’s great at storytelling and pays close attention to detail. These skills have helped shape Come From Away into the award-winning show it is today.
Memorable Moments and Songs from the Show
Come From Away is packed with memorable moments that touch the heart. The strong ‘Welcome to the Rock’ opening number, along with the inspiring story of Captain Beverly Bass, leaves a lasting impression. One standout scene is the Screech-in ceremony, a fun Newfoundland tradition that welcomes newcomers into their culture.
The music in ‘Come From Away’ is just as impactful, with songs like:
- ‘Me and the Sky’
- ‘Welcome to the Rock’
- ‘Stop The World’
- ‘Somewhere in the Middle of Nowhere’
These songs not only entertain but also pull the audience into the story, creating a deeply engaging theatre experience.

Six Reasons Why Going To Gigs Alone Is The Best
So you want to go see that metalcore band you love but none of your friends like that “shouty” music? Or you REALLY want to go check out that new artist on TikTok you discovered but all your mates won’t go to a gig where they only know one song? Or worse, your group of friends cannot get themselves organized and work out which show and when to go on a tour, so you’re worried you’ll miss out on tickets. Let them be miserable and start living your best life by going to concerts by yourself. Trust us, it’ll be the best thing you’ll ever do!
Going to gigs alone can be daunting. What am I going to do with myself in between sets? Are people going to think I’m weird? Why would I not want to share the experience?
Listen, we are all for sharing the experience, but sometimes it’s either missing out or going alone, and in those cases we definitely recommend going alone. Here’s a few reasons why you’ll never regret it once you build up the courage to go through with it.
1 . See artists you really REALLY want to see
Imagine the FOMO of missing your favourite band on their new tour, hearing all those new songs live, seeing everyone post about it. Don’t let that happen, and get that ticket. Plus you then get to tell the pals who didn’t want to come how you saw that band or artist before they blew up or how they played that one B-side track that everyone loves – now who has FOMO?
2. Meet new friends
It’s no secret that music brings people together. That moment when everyone’s favourite ballad hits and there’s not a dry eye in the building, you turn to your left or right and suddenly you bond with a stranger over your favourite song. For the metalheads, we also recommend mosh pits, follow the rules of the pit but what a way to make new friends!
3. The freedom
Now hear us out – but going to a gig alone means you can get to the venue when you want, you can go to the loos when you want, you can stand in line at the merch for hours and no one will ask if you’re sure you want to wait. And no one will drag you home when you want to wait after the show has finished and find every piece of confetti or ask for the setlist.
4 . It’s a cult
You are not alone in going to gigs by yourself, you’d probably be surprised by how many people do the same thing. Some fan groups even have entire sub cultures of going to gigs alone (shoutout to Frank Turner’s solo armada, we see you!) – bringing us back to reason #2, new friends.
5. Confidence boost
Going to a gig by yourself will do wonders for your confidence. Sure the first time might feel a bit awkward and weird, but isn’t it always? Remember your first day of school? And then it was kind of okay after a while (let’s ignore our teenage years…) Once you’ve done it and experience all of the divinity of a solo gig you’ll feel free as a bird.
6. Experience the music your way
Whether you love hanging out by the bar, need to be front row, prefer seats or want to leave a bit earlier to catch the last train – the world is your oyster! The experience is yours, you don’t need to coordinate with someone else, rely on them to enjoy the show as much as you are and have as much of a good time as you are. And frankly, if you took a chance on a new genre or new artist and it isn’t your vibe, you can just go home. Glorious.
So there you have it – doesn’t sound too bad now does it?! At the end of the day it all comes down to you and your artist, a concert will always be a shared experience whether with strangers or friends. The most important thing to do is have fun.
Your next gig awaits
It all starts here.

Paul will bring his acclaimed Got Back tour to Europe this December!
Fulfilling his promise to 'get back', Paul will return to France, Spain and the UK with his Got Back tour. Earlier this month, Paul announced his first live shows of 2024 with the next leg of the tour launching in South America this October.
With songs like ‘Hey Jude’, ‘Live and Let Die’, ‘Band on the Run’, ‘Let It Be’ and so many more, the Paul McCartney live experience is everything any music lover could ever want from a rock show: hours of the greatest moments from the last 60 years of music – dozens of songs from Paul’s solo, Wings and of course Beatles catalogues that have formed the soundtracks of our lives.
This will mark Paul’s first European show since his iconic Glastonbury headlining performance in 2022. Hailed as “one of the greatest gigs of all time” by The Times and “a masterclass from the greatest living cultural figure in this country’s history” by The i, it was also Paul and his band’s 500th show together! These dates will see McCartney return for his first live performance in Paris in six years - in 2018 he played at La Defense Arena, where he is making his return. The wait has been longer for Spaniards, where he last played eight years ago, in 2016 at Estadio Vincente Calderon.
Paul launched his Got Back tour in 2022, completing 16 huge shows across the US before performing his history-making set at Glastonbury in June 2022. In 2023 Paul performed 18 incredible shows as the Got Back tour rocked through Australia, Mexico and Brazil.

Liam Gallagher 's son Gene is set to embark on a UK tour with his band VILLANELLE.

- Here's what Gene Gallagher's new band sounds like...
Ahead of his Definitely Maybe dates, Liam Gallagher defended his choice to give his son a leg up after he told fans Villanelle would be opening the nostalgic tour.
Taking to X, he wrote: "I’ve given many opportunities to many young bands over the years it’s what you do if you can now it’s VILLANELLES turn if you don’t like it F**KOFF LG x"
I’ve given many opportunities to many young bands over the years it’s what you do if you can now it’s VILLANELLES turn if you don’t like it FUCKOFF LG x — Liam Gallagher (@liamgallagher) April 5, 2024
On the whole, fans agreed with the Manchester rocker, saying he didn't need to explain himself or apologise, to which he responded that he was simply putting people in their place.
However, one fan did accuse him of nepotism, to which the Supersonic singer replied: "Is it f*** he’s my son it’s what you do".
Is it fuck he’s my son it’s what you do — Liam Gallagher (@liamgallagher) April 5, 2024
When a fan asked if his eldest son's band, Automotion , would be taking to the stage, Gallagher revealed that Lennon - who he shares with ex wife Patsy Kensit - was also offered the opportunity and politely declined.
He was asked and politely refused — Liam Gallagher (@liamgallagher) April 5, 2024
Liam Gallagher continues his Definitely Maybe tour with a duo of dates at 3Arena Dublin, before returning back to his hometown to complete two more shows at Co-op Live Manchester, which he has dubbed as "up there" with New York's Madison Square Garden.

Come From Away UK Tour
Come from away on tour review – thank cod it’s back.
The first-ever UK and Ireland tour has opened in Leicester
They say everything starts and ends at Tim Hortons. It’s almost true in the case of the first-ever Come From Away UK and Ireland tour – starting at Curve in Leicester, conveniently close to a Tim Hortons.
Irene Sankoff and David Hein’s heartwarming – and heartbreaking – musical celebrates a small town’s hospitality when diverted planes landed in the wake of 9/11. It’s here that we meet the locals; one half of Gander’s two-person police department, a school bus driver on strike, a reporter having an eventful first day and the manager of the animal hospital – and learn where they all were when they heard the news.
With the buttoning of a jacket and the change of an expression, the locals switch into the ‘plane people’ – first panicked, then bored, then jolly from the duty free, then scared. The transitions seem effortless, with credit to the cast who quite literally switch at a drop of a hat, and to Howell Binkley’s beautiful lighting design which flicks from warm golds to deep blues as spotlights illuminate vocalised thoughts and feelings.
Routine life on ‘the Rock’; cookouts and hockey games are interrupted with blocked toilets and supermarket sweeps. The words, candid but careful, pop with authentic accents from Egyptian to English to Newfoundlander, as Sankoff and Hein’s toe-tapping score fuses Gaelic folk song, pop ballads and gentle lullaby.
Under Andrew Corcoran’s musical direction, the band peek from behind tall dark wood trees. They take centre stage (with their accordions, fiddles, bass guitar, and even an ugly stick!) to participate in the “Screech In”, led with gusto by Nicholas Pound as the trusty town mayor. It’s a joyful scene as the come from away-ers shot whiskey and kiss freshly caught cod as an initiation – and the band’s involvement adds to the knees-up festivities.
Mix match wooden chairs become cramped airplane seats, bumpy bus rides, church pews and the place where the continents once met. Kelly Devine’s harmonious movement is subtle but effective; an outstretched arm, an intake of breath straightening their backs, a sidewards glance. Crucially, it feels so incredibly real.
Over the five days, relationships become fraught (Mark Dugdale and Jamal Zulfiqar’s differences surface as the Kevins) while others awkwardly blossom (Kirsty Hoiles and Daniel Crowder are a beautifully charismatic duo as Nick and Diane), and tender friendships develop (Amanda Henderson and Bree Smith portray mothers with unwavering protective instincts desperate for news in a pre-mobile phone world).
Christopher Ashley’s direction doesn’t shy from shifting to the uglier tones. Prejudices rise with anxieties, and we see a Muslim passenger treated with hostility, a gay couple worried about being in a backwater town, and a Jewish passenger who has felt he has had to hide his identity. These quieter scenes are filled with pain and contemplation. “Prayer” sees Arabic, Hebrew, and Hindi languages blend, with Oliver Jacobson’s voice particularly poignant as a rabbi. As Beverley Bass, American Airlines’ first female captain, Sara Poyzer’s “Me and the Sky” whirls with turmoil, her voice breaking on the last line with emotion.
Ten thousand residents of Gander, Newfoundland welcomed over 6,500 strangers into their town in September 2001. This Come From Away company, from the front of the stage right to the back, are telling these stories with all their might – and I have a feeling that each time you return, you’ll spot something new, but feel something familiar.
Thank cod it’s back!

Fever 333 return with ferocious track New West Order, announce extensive US/Europe tour
Jason Aalon Butler’s rap metal unit have a stacked 2024 ahead
Fever 333 have released new single New West Order and announced a long-running tour for late 2024.
The rap metal act, fronted by former Letlive leader Jason Aalon Butler, released the song and an accompanying music video today (June 18). Watch the clip below.
Butler comments on the track: “There is an intersectional hot bed where the hood and hardcore meet. For pimps and punks alike to enjoy and celebrate their taboos.
“This intersection is beautifully represented in Los Angeles and New West Order is an unapologetic exploration of my experience as a social variable growing up in LA that I think the world should also have the privilege of being exposed to.”
The vocalist continues: “It is also the beginning of west coast gangster rock as a genre and a culture. The beauty in disparity and these nuanced diamonds forged from the pressures we experience in alternative commodities (of all types against the background of our status quo) and, particularly, people of color.
“I spent about six years talking about how I felt about these governmental/societal systems and imbalances; now I’m going to talk about why I feel this way and the experiences that shaped such ideologies.”
Fever 333’s tour dates will start in the USA in October and early November, before continuing to mainland Europe in mid-November and hitting the UK in late November/early December.

Butler founded Fever 333 in 2017, following the dissolution of Letlive, with Aric Improta on drums and Stephen Harrison on guitar.
Improta and Harrison departed the lineup simultaneously in 2022 and formed a new band called House Of Protection.
Fever 333 are now rounded out by Brandon Davis (guitars), April Kae (bass) and Thomas Pridgen (drums).
Butler will rejoin Letlive next year , with the intention of giving the band the farewell tour it never got.
Fever 333’s second studio album, the followup to 2019’s Strength In Numb333rs , is expected to come out this year.

00s pop rock legends come together for epic throwback UK tour
Share this with
Bowling For Soup and Wheatus are ready to take everyone back to the early 2000s for an epic throwback tour.
The 1985 pop punk icons and Teenage Dirtbag legends have announced plans to reunite for a nostalgic jaunt across the UK with 10 shows in February 2025 after joining forces at Download Festival over the weekend.
Fresh off that weekend, they’ve confirmed tour dates for the new year, starting with a show at Blackpool’s Empress Ballroom on February 5, before the run comes to an end in Bournemouth 10 days later.
Fans got a taster of what to expect when Wheatus frontman Brendan B. Brown joined BFS on stage for a rendition of Teenage Dirtbag at Download, and now his group will be special guests for the tour.
The Girl All The Band Guys Want band, led by prolific frontman Jaret Reddick , will be headlining the shows as they celebrate the 20th anniversary of their third album A Hangover You Don’t Deserve.
As well as a cover of SR-71’s track 1985 – which has become one of Bowling For Soup’s biggest hits – the LP also includes fan favourites like Almost, Ohio (Come Back to Texas) and Two-Seater.
Wheatus burst onto the scene in 2000 with their debut self titled album, which featured Teenage Dirtbag and their cover of Erasure’s A Little Respect, while they have continued to make music over the last 24 years.
Jaret and his bandmates Gary Wiseman and Rob Felicetti are currently performing without guitarist Chris Burney after he was hospitalised last week during the group’s European dates.
In a statement on Friday, they said: ‘Chris was taken to hospital and wasn’t able to play last night’s show in Florence, Italy. Today we all flew to the UK.
‘Chris is heading home from here to receive the care he needs. He still asking for positive vibes and privacy at this time.
‘With his blessing, the rest of us will finish this run, including Download Festival, Dublin and Belfast, as a three piece. Thank you all for your support, love and understanding.’
As well as a stunning acoustic set at Download, the group also performed an emotional ‘full band’ set without Chris, and later thanked fans for their support.
They wrote on Facebook after the shows: ‘Download: what can we say. That was special for so many reasons! Thank you for watching. Thank you for helping pay tribute to Chris Burney!! See you all soon! We love you so very much!’
Meanwhile, new music could be on the horizon after Jaret revealed there were plans to put out some songs after spending much of the next year on the road.
‘We’ve got a couple of cover songs that we’re going to release throughout this year. And we have two new originals, two new Bowling For Soup songs recorded. We’re just not really sure what to do with them yet,’ he exclusively told Metro.co.uk .
‘I’ve been telling the guys, I think we need to be focused on putting something out next year.’
Tickets for Bowling For Soup’s 2025 UK tour go on sale on Friday, 21 June. Click here for more information.
