Get ready for an adventure of a lifetime as you embark on this mountain trek to the legendary Everest Base Camp Trek: What You Need To Know Before You Hike It Everest Base Camp – the starting point for mountaineers who will attempt to climb Mount Everest!

You’ll be trekking in the heart of the Nepal Himalayas, surrounded by stunning vistas of towering peaks and glaciers as you make your way to the base camp. I had always thought the Canadian Rockies were the most beautiful mountains in the world – until I did this trek. The Himalayas are just awe-inspiring, towering mountains.

As you traverse the Khumbu region, you’ll have the chance to discover the rich culture and traditions of the Sherpa people. These mountain-dwelling folks are known for their friendliness and hospitality, and you’ll be welcomed into the tea houses and communities as you journey through the region. You’ll also make friends (or foes) with yaks, who you’ll be sharing the trail with. I recommend always giving them right away.

From the quaint Sherpa villages to the famous Tengboche Monastery, the largest Buddhist monastery in the area, you’ll experience a unique blend of spirituality and rugged mountain life. And don’t forget to turn prayer wheels to accumulate merit and good luck for your trek. I turned everyone I passed and made it to Base Camp despite having altitude sickness so it works :).

The ultimate highlight of the trek is reaching Everest Base Camp; although you can’t see Mount Everest from there, don’t worry; you’ll get an outstanding view of it from two different spots along the way.

The sense of accomplishment you’ll feel after your trek is worth the effort, and the breathtaking views will stay with you for a lifetime! It’s mountain trekking at its finest.

Although it’s a shorter trek than some of the other mountain trekking experiences included here, don’t be fooled, the trek to Mount Rinjani will challenge you physically with the steep ascents. Fortunately, you’ll be passing through lush forests, past pristine lakes, and up steep rocky paths to the summit so you can focus on the stunning scenery instead of how hard you’re breathing.

The highlight is, of course, reaching the summit of Mount Rinjani and witnessing the spectacular views from the top. From the summit, you’ll be able to see the crystal-clear crater lake and the steam vents that signify the volcano’s continued activity.

Snowman Trek, Bhutan

Snowman Trek in Bhutan is one of the best mountain treks in the world

  • Distance: 720 km (447 miles)

  • Accommodations : Camping or Lodge-based trek
  • Best Time To Do This Trek: September to November or March to May

The Snowman Trek in Bhutan is considered one of the most challenging mountain treks in the world due to its high altitude, remote location, and rugged terrain. It covers a total of 11 mountain passes, which are over 5,000 meters (16,400 ft) in elevation, making the trek physically demanding and requiring a high level of fitness and preparation. This is on my hiking bucket list, and I’m really hoping to do it next year.

Despite the difficulties, the trek is also considered one of the most rewarding and spectacular, offering breathtaking views of the Himalayas and unique cultural experiences like the chance to visit ancient monasteries, visit the remote villages of Laya and Thanza, and experience the hospitality of the Bhutanese people, who not only measure their GDP, also measure happiness. It’s considered the happiest country in the world.

You’ll get fantastic views of Gangkar Punsum, the world’s highest unclimbed peak, from a distance.

It remains unclimbed because it is considered sacred by the Bhutanese people. And climbing it is against Bhutanese law and cultural beliefs. In 1994, Bhutan prohibited all mountaineering above an altitude of 6,000 meters (19,685 ft) in order to preserve the spiritual and environmental integrity of these sacred peaks. This also includes Gangkar Puensum, making it the highest unclimbed mountain in the world.

Aksu Traverse, Kyrgyzstan

Trek Highlight: Experiencing a remote wilderness adventure while forging your own way through Kyrgyzstan’s Tien Shan Mountains

Aksu Traverse in Kyrgyzstan is one of the best mountain treks in the world

  • # of Days: 6-10 days (typical itinerary)

  • Fitness Level: Good fitness level
  • Accommodations : Camping or Homestays
  • Best Time To Do This Trek: July to September (dry season with stable weather conditions)

You’re in for a wild adventure when you set out on this mountain trek, the Aksu Traverse in Kyrgyzstan! This multi-day trek takes you through some of the most remote, breathtaking and rugged landscapes in the world.

You’ll find yourself surrounded by towering peaks in the Tien Shan Mountains , glistening glaciers, and pristine alpine lakes. As you trek, you’ll pass landmarks like the Aksu Pass, which sits at a dizzying 4,250 meters above sea level, and the stunning Aksu Glacier, which creeps down the valley like a river of ice.

With each step, you’ll be struck by the beauty of the landscape and the isolation of this remote corner of the world. I’ve had the pleasure of hiking in Kyrgyzstan and the Tien Shan Mountains (sometimes called the little brother of the Himalayas), and I LOVED it. It’s so remote and incredibly beautiful. And if you time it right, you can combine it with a visit to the Nomad Games .

But what really sets the Aksu Traverse apart from other treks is the sense of adventure that comes with it.

This is not a well-trodden trail with established campsites and easy-to-follow paths. Instead, you’ll be forging your own way through the mountains, relying on your map and compass skills to keep you on track.

You’ll spend long days testing your endurance as you cross boulder fields and ford rivers and scramble up steep slopes.

At the end of each day, you’ll set up camp in some of the most serene and peaceful places on earth and fall asleep to the sound of silence. If you’re looking for a challenge and a true backcountry experience, you’ll love the Aksu Traverse Trek!

Salkantay trek vs the inca trail to macchu picchu.

Salkantay and Inca Trail going to Macchu Picchu in Peru

The main difference between the Salkantay Trek and the Inca Trail is the length, altitude terrain, and cultural significance of the routes. The Salkantay Trek offers a longer and more strenuous wilderness experience with fewer crowds.

However, it offers a less rich cultural experience than the Inca Trail. The Inca Trail is also one day shorter, making it easier.

The other key difference is that the Salkantay Trek reaches an altitude ~ 400 m higher than the Inca Trail – 4,600 meters (15,091 feet) at the Salkantay Pass. In contrast, the highest point reached on the Inca Trail is approximately 4,200 meters (13,776 feet) at Dead Woman’s Pass.

Mountain Trekking Gear

While the specific gear you need for each trek may vary, check out my Trekking Gear List for a general idea of what you’ll need on almost any trek. Of special note are:

  • bringing an emergency thermal blanket . It may save your life.
  • Microspikes – if you’re hiking on ice or snow. They prevent you from falling.

Mountain Trekking Tips

Trekking with hiking poles

Check out my guide 7 Things That Will Wreck Your Trek . It’s a must-read before doing any trek. But of special note:

Choose a trek that’s suitable for your fitness and hiking experience

This might seem obvious, but owning a hiking company, I’m shocked at how many people want to do the Tour du Mont Blanc who say they’re in good shape but haven’t hiked before.

If you’ve never hiked before, then you’ll want to do at least a few day hikes first, but ideally, hike regularly. Setting yourself a hiking goal can help you do this. Plus, it’s motivating knowing that you’re training for your mountain trek.

And if you’re regularly doing day hikes, but it’s your first trek, start with a shorter trek. As you can see from above, there’s a wide range of treks you can do, starting from as little as two days.

Use trekking Poles

Even if you don’t normally hike with them, I highly recommend them for any trek. They take pressure off your joints, so you’re less likely to experience a knee issue and you won’t be as sore at the end of each day. You can see our list of recommended trekking poles .

Choose your Hiking Buddies Wisely

When you’re spending day and after day with the same people, it’s important to choose your hiking buddies carefully. Maybe that means going hiking with a friend. If you decide to do a group tour, ensure you spend the most time with the people that you vibe with the most and be polite, but don’t feel that you have to talk to everyone regularly. See my post on Travelling with a Group When You Don’t Fit in for more tips.

Guided vs Self-Guided Trekking Tours

This depends on the type of trek you’re doing. For some treks, like the Snowman Trek, you have to do guided. But for many, you have a choice. While I normally prefer self-guided hiking tours, when you’re doing a trek at a high elevation, like Everest Base Camp. I recommend going with a guide.

Also, if you’re doing a remote trek with little to no infrastructure, I also recommend going with a guide. Your safety is more important than your personal preferences.

More Trekking Tips

  • If you’re trekking in cold weather, make sure your water doesn’t freeze with these tips.
  • Ensure that you start your day off by having the right hiking breakfast .
  • Eat for fuel with these hiking snacks and lunches.
  • Wear Merino wool on your trek. I think it’s a miracle fabric.
  • Know what the signs of frostbite are – and how to prevent it.
  • Set a date by …  you want to do a specific trek.  Otherwise, you may never do it. You’ll find more tips on setting a hiking goal here.

How to Prevent Altitude Sickness on Your Mountain Trek

trekking in Dolomiti Bellunesi National Park

If you’re really worried about altitude sickness, the best way to avoid it is to choose a low-altitude trek.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention , altitude sickness most commonly occurs at elevations of 3,000 meters (9,843 feet) and higher. However, it can occur at slightly lower altitudes as well.

When I did the trek to Everest Base Camp, I experienced it at 3300m.

As you can see from the list of mountain treks, there are incredible treks that you can do that stay below the threshold.

While I’ll go into how to prevent altitude sickness in more detail in another post, the best way to prevent it and/or to reduce its severity of it is to hike very slowly to give your body time to acclimatize to the elevation.

You’ll also want to take regular breaks, giving your body even more time to acclimatize. When you’re not experiencing altitude sickness, it can seem like you’re hiking painfully slow, but by doing so, you can delay the onset of it.

On my Everest Base Camp Trek, ten of our twelve participants experienced it to varying degrees, but the ones that experienced it, later rather than sooner were grateful. I was really surprised that I experienced it at such a low elevation.

MT. ELBRUS CLIMB HIGHLIGHTS

  • Visit Russia’s greatest cities during the expedition where we stay within an easy stroll of Moscow’s Red Square and in the heart of St. Petersburg.
  • Climb Mt. Elbrus with an experienced RMI Guide , benefiting from the background, training, and expertise of our guides as you venture to higher altitudes.
  • Improve your chances of reaching the summit with time spent training and acclimatizing and with an itinerary that has the flexibility to accommodate for the uncertainties of Mt. Elbrus’ weather.
  • Base out of the Pilgrim Huts on Mt. Elbrus, enjoying the hot meals prepared by the hut’s cooks and allowing us to climb one of the Seven Summits carrying only light daypacks.
  • Take part in an RMI adventure and see why we continue to set the standard in guiding excellence.

adventure mountain treks

Situated between the Black Sea to the west and the Caspian Sea to the east, Mt. Elbrus rises majestically from the high green plains that stretch northward into the heartland of Russia. Just to the south of the peak lies the main body of the Caucasus Mountains , a range that rivals the Alps with its stark rugged beauty. Our adventures begin several thousand miles to the north of Mt. Elbrus in Moscow - the political, economic, and cultural heart of Russia. We walk across the cobblestones of Red Square, beneath the shadows of St. Basil's onion-shaped domes, and cross through the thick walls of the Kremlin to visit the seat of Russian power.

We then fly south to the town of Mineralnye Vody, known for its abundant mineral springs. A three-hour drive brings us to the Baksan Valley, sitting at the foot of Mt. Elbrus and surrounded on all sides by the soaring peaks of the Caucasus. After adjusting to the altitude while hiking in the valley, we move to the Pilgrim Hut at 12,600’ on Mt. Elbrus’ flanks. We use the mountain’s rolling glaciers surrounding the hut to review our mountaineering skills and continue our acclimatization in preparation for our summit bid.

This is an ideal trip for climbers aiming to build their altitude experience while climbing one of the Seven Summits .

The route takes us up the broad flanks of Mt. Elbrus southside to the West Summit, the mountain's highest point. The ascent is a moderate snow climb that presents minimal technical difficulty but the altitudes to which we go make climbing Mt. Elbrus a challenging undertaking.

We end our expedition in St. Petersburg. Sitting on the shores of the Gulf of Finland, this beautiful European-styled city is often described as the "Venice of the North". We spend a full day exploring St. Petersburg's stunning architecture, amazing museums, and beautiful canals. Our time there is the ideal way to end our Mt. Elbrus adventure.

THE RMI DIFFERENCE

Rainier Mountaineering, Inc. was established in 1969 and is one of America's oldest and most-trusted guide services. We are the largest guide service on Mt. Rainier and Denali and leaders in guiding climbs and treks around the globe. Our years of leading mountain adventures give us the experience and knowledge to create the best possible trips. We work hard to live up to our reputation as an industry leader.

Our Mt. Elbrus climb is led by RMI’s foremost U.S. guides who bring years of climbing experience in the mountains around the world and an intimate familiarity with the region to the trip. Working closely with our local partners, these mountaineering veterans make climbing Mt. Elbrus an unforgettable experience. Our trip preparation before departure takes care of the details for you, from hotels and airport transfers to arranging in country flights, so that you can focus on preparing for the climb instead of the distraction that comes with coordinating logistics.

In Moscow and St. Petersburg we stay at hotels that have been hand-picked by our guides for their location and amenities, staying in the heart of the cities within easy walking distance of their greatest sites. While on the mountain the Pilgrim Hut provides us comfortable lodging and enjoyable meals, keeping us content, healthy, and strong throughout the climb. We use RMI's own climbing equipment brought from the U.S., ensuring that our expedition standards of safety, quality, and reliability are met. Our exceptional focus on detail, our unparalleled level of guest attention, and our genuine love of these adventures are what make our programs truly memorable.

ELBRUS NORTHSIDE ALTERNATIVE

We also lead climbs of Mt. Elbrus' more remote Northside. This program is slightly longer and entails expedition style climbing as we move camps up the mountain. Our Northside Expedition is ideal for climbers seeking a more remote experience away from the busier standard route and interested in building their expedition climbing skills.

Safety has always been RMI's top priority and we strive to create the safest mountain experience possible. RMI's experienced team of guides focus on leading a fun and successful climb without compromising safety. We apply the same standards of safety we bring to Alaska and the Himalayas to our Mt. Elbrus guided climbs . Careful planning, precise ascent profiles, flexibility in our itinerary, daily weather forecasts via satellite, and diligent attention are taken as we venture into high altitudes. Comprehensive medical kits, rescue equipment, and radio and satellite communication equipment are carried with the team throughout the climb.

As you prepare for your upcoming adventure please feel free to contact our office and speak directly to one of our experienced guides regarding equipment, conditioning, the route, or any other questions you may have about our programs. We are available Monday thru Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at (888) 89-CLIMB or [email protected] .

SUMMIT DAY • 18,510' | 5,642M

We get an early alpine start for the summit. We begin our ascent with a Snowcat ride to Pastukhova Rocks (15,000'). From there, we climb the low angle snow slopes as we traverse towards the Saddle (17,700'). Mt. Elbrus has two large summit domes and the Saddle separates the East Summit from the West Summit. Both are comparable in size but the West Summit is slightly higher, and our objective. Our route gets somewhat steeper as we gain the upper summit plateau where we follow the ridge to the Summit. After enjoying the summit and its impressive views of the Caucasus mountain range, we descend back to the Pilgrim Hut. Depending on our schedule, the time of day, and the weather we have the option of taking the tram back down into the valley or spending one more night on the mountain. Climbing time is 8 to 10 hours. (B, L, D)

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is required for this trip. Your travel insurance policy should include trip cancellation, trip interruption, trip delay, baggage loss or delay, medical expenses, and evacuation.

Navigating through the different options for travel insurance can be challenging. When purchasing Travel Insurance, here are a few items to consider:

  • Read the fine print. Travel Insurance will reimburse you when canceling for a covered reason for prepaid, non-refundable trip costs that you insure. However, there are exclusions, so make sure you understand the "covered reasons."
  • Confirm that your activity is a covered “activity.” Not all travel insurance policies will offer coverage for activities such as mountaineering, climbing, skiing, or trekking adventures. Policies can also exclude coverage for activities due to the gear used (crampons, ice axe), activities that go above specific elevations or activities in a particular region of the world. If there are exclusions, you may need to add an "Adventure" or "Sports" package to cover your activity.
  • Verify that your state of residence is allowed with the policy that you are purchasing. Not all insurance companies offer policies in all 50 states.
  • Contact your travel protection company directly for any questions you have regarding benefits or coverage.

We have partnered with  Travelex Insurance  and  Ripcord Insurance  because they offer certain policies specifically designed for adventure travel with coverages for remote areas and activities like mountaineering, climbing, skiing, and trekking, without any altitude restrictions.

For your convenience, we offer Travelex Insurance Services, Inc.(CA Agency License #0D10209) travel protection plans to help protect you and your travel investment against the unexpected.

Travel Advisories / Warnings

Please confirm any current travel advisories/warnings as well as passport and visa requirements with the US Department of State .

Currently the US Department of State has a Travel Advisory pertaining the the north Caucasus, including the Mount Elbrus area. Please review the Travel Advisory before registering for this program to ensure that you are aware of the non-climbing risks associated with this program.

Getting There

Travel to Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport (SVO) typically takes about 24 hours from the U.S. depending on your departure city, available connections, and flight times. Flights generally arrive in the afternoon on Day 2 of the itinerary.

Departing flights from St. Petersburg (LED) may be booked for any time on Day 13, the final day of the program.

Entry Requirements

A valid passport is required when traveling to Russia. Your passport must be valid for 6 months beyond the expected return date.

We suggest making a copy of the first two pages of your passport and keeping them in a separate bag as a backup. A copy should also be left with your emergency contact.

A Visa is also required for entry to Russia. This must be done prior to your arrival or you will not be permitted to enter the country.

Russian Visa

Our office will provide you with the current application form, a written itinerary and a letter of invitation from our hosting organization in Russia. You will need to submit these forms along with a valid passport, an additional passport photo and payment to your local Russian Consulate or a travel document company that can assist you in processing the Russian Visa. This generally takes place 2 - 3 months before the trip departure and will take 4 - 20 business days to process. Once your visa arrives, please check the date to ensure it covers your complete stay.

Airport Arrival

Upon arrival proceed to the Immigrations desk for foreign travelers. Proceed to Baggage Claim and then to Customs. There will be a random selection of bags for inspection. Be sure to keep all your bags together. You can then hire a Yandex taxi to transfer you to our hotel.

In-Country Transportation

The provided transportation in Russia as stated in the itinerary is via private vehicle.

Immunizations & Travel Medicine

For the most current information on inoculation requirements and recommendations, please refer to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention .

Traveler's Health

Travelers often suffer from upset stomachs when in foreign countries. There are some basic rules, however, that can help keep you healthy.

  • Hygiene - It is important that you wash your hands thoroughly before meals and after using any bathroom. If water is not available for washing, we recommend using a hand sanitizer.
  • Water - The number one rule is: don't drink the water, and that includes shower water and ice! Brush your teeth with purified water rather than tap water. You should check bottled water for a good seal and use a napkin to wipe dry excess moisture in drinking glasses. Take care with fruit juice, particularly if it has been diluted with water. Carefully clean the tops of bottled beverages before opening.
  • Food - If you can cook it, boil it, or peel it; you can usually eat it. Salads and fruits should be washed with purified water or peeled where possible. Be wary of ice cream and shellfish. Always avoid any undercooked meat.

Medical EmeRgencies

Elbrus is a remote mountain without easy access to definitive medical care. We are our own rescue team.

The medical facilities in Moscow, St. Petersburg and other urban areas in Russia are limited except for routine, non-emergency needs. We will work with our tour operator to access an appropriate level of care should the need arise.

Russia Country Facts

Russia is the largest country in the world at almost twice the size of the United States. Officially known as the Russian Federation, its main attractions include art, magnificent (and newly restored) cathedrals and monasteries, treasures and palaces of the czars, the performing arts, health spas, river cruises, historic sites, spectacular scenery, Siberia, and Moscow's Kremlin.

Russia has a captivating history. Tradition says the Viking Rurik came to Russia in 862 and founded the first Russian dynasty in Novgorod. Through the 10th and 11th centuries, Christianity united the various tribes, but Mongol raids broke the Russian territories into smaller dukedoms. It was Ivan the Terrible (1533-1584) who is credited with founding the Russian state. The succeeding period saw power wrested into the hands of the czars and expanded Russian territory. These actions ultimately led to revolution and the creation of the Soviet Union (U.S.S.R.) in 1922. The Union dissolved in 1991 and Russia became the federal presidential republic that it is today.

Russia will appeal to travelers who have a sense of adventure and an open mind. Don't expect a relaxing vacation and, unless you're in Moscow or St. Petersburg, don't expect deluxe accommodations - a trip through Russia requires determination, flexibility and plenty of patience.

The climbing season extends from May to September, with the highest summit success rate from mid-July through mid-August. September through April comprises the rainy and winter seasons.

The weather in Moscow and while traveling to and from the mountains can be very warm.

While there can be no guarantees of perfect weather in the mountains, our expeditions take full advantage of both the weather and route conditions for this expedition, and utilize prime months for optimal climbing experiences.

Cultural Etiquette

Although it is not expected that we dress formally, we should dress modestly. Casual and comfortable clothing and shoes are suggested. Showing expensive cameras, watches, jewelry, etc. is considered unseemly and may attract unwanted attention.

Men shake hands when greeting one another and maintain direct eye contact. Women generally shake hands when meeting one another for the first time. In greetings between men and women, a light handshake is common. It is expected that you remove your gloves to shake hands, regardless of how cold it may be. The three alternating kisses used in greetings are common only between friends and family.

Chivalry, for the most part, is still valued in Russia. Men are expected to hold the door, offer their seat, or offer their coat.

Electricity

Electricity in Russia is different than in the United States. Russia has standardized on type F (Gost) sockets and plugs. Type C plugs and power points are still commonly found in older buildings. Both are used for 230 volt, 50 hertz appliances. U.S. appliances will require plug adaptors, convertors or transformers. Remember to bring any necessary adaptors if you plan to recharge electronics.

The current currency of Russia is the Ruble. Currency can be easily converted at banks, hotels and kiosks. Check a financial newspaper or www.xe.com for the current exchange rate prior to departure.

We suggest bringing $600-$900 total for personal spending money including restaurant meals, drinks, pocket money, and the Support Staff Tip Pool.

Cash machines are still the best way to get money in country, so if you are in doubt, be sure to bring your cash card. Cash machines are readily available in Moscow and St. Petersburg, but become increasingly difficult to find outside of the main urban areas.

Credit cards are accepted in most, but not all, areas.

Everyone has a preferred way to carry money. Some use money belts, others have hidden pockets. Whatever you do, be aware of pickpockets in any area which caters to tourists.

Everyone approaches tipping a little differently. Whether or not a person tips, and how much, is completely dependent upon the individual; here are some suggested tipping guidelines for your trip.

Local waiters, drivers, and other service personnel expect to be tipped. Ten to fifteen percent is standard. Some restaurants and hotels add a 10% service fee to bills in which case, no further tip is required.

Support Staff Tip Pool: We recommend that each climber contribute $75 to the Tip Pool. This is collected at the beginning of the trip and will cover group tips for all our support and mountain staff throughout the program.

Our guides work hard to ensure your well-being and success on the mountain. If you have a positive experience, gratuities are an excellent way to show your appreciation. Amounts are at your discretion and should be based on your level of enjoyment. Tips for excellent service normally average 10 – 15% of the cost of the program. If you would rather not bring the guide gratuity with you on the trip, you can send a check or call the RMI office to pay with a credit card upon your return.

http://wikitravel.org/en/Russia and https://www.lonelyplanet.com/russia offer a wealth of information.

This trip is open to all individuals in excellent physical condition and is a great first trip to altitudes above 15,000'. Prior knowledge of, and comfort with, rope travel, the use of crampons, and ice axe arrest are required.

Our experience shows that individuals perform better and enjoy the adventure more if they have a high degree of fitness and comfort with basic mountaineering skills. This program’s high altitude and snowy terrain contribute to make this a very worthwhile challenge.

Get In The Best Shape Of Your Life And Then Go Climb A Mountain

Create a fitness and training program, physical fitness training.

Mountaineering requires a high degree of physical stamina and mental toughness. Even for the healthiest and fittest individuals, climbing mountains qualifies as an extremely challenging endeavor.

  • Start immediately. Start a rigorous fitness and training program now with the goal of arriving in top physical condition and confident in your skills.
  • Be intentional. Focus on gaining the necessary strength, stamina and skills to meet the physical and technical demands of the climb.
  • Be sport-specific. The best fitness and training program mimics the physical and technical demands of your climbing objective. The closer you get to your program date, the more your training should resemble the climbing.

For Elbrus southside, you are preparing for:

  • Hiking and climbing with a 20-25 lb load
  • A 10+ hour summit day
  • Mountaineering techniques which require core strength and flexibility

Nothing ensures a personally successful adventure like your level of fitness and training. Bottom line: Plan on being in the best shape of your life and ready for a very challenging adventure!

Please refer to our Resources for Mountaineering Fitness and Training for detailed fitness and training information.

Acclimatization

The key to climbing high is proper acclimatization. Our program follows a calculated ascent profile which allows time for your body to adjust to the altitude.

Excellent physical conditioning significantly increases your ability to acclimatize as you ascend. Climbers in excellent physical condition simply have more energy to commit to the acclimatization process throughout the days and nights of the ascent, allowing their bodies to adjust to the altitude more easily.

Finally, physical performance and acclimatization are also related to how well you have taken care of yourself throughout the hours, days and weeks prior to summit day. Arriving healthy and well-rested, maintaining proper hydration and caloric intake, and protecting against unnecessary heat loss (staying warm) are all key factors in an individual’s success on an expedition such as this.

What You’ll Need

A list of required personal equipment accompanies every RMI program, and the thought process behind each item is much greater than simply “preparing for the worst and hoping for the best.” The list for your program takes into account factors such as: seasonality, route conditions, weather, elevation and more. As such, this list is framed within the broadest of contexts and is dynamic by its very nature. Therefore, certain variables (additions and/or subtractions) are inherent within such an all-encompassing list. We make every effort to recommend only top of the line clothing and technical gear and it is never our intention for you to buy or rent unnecessary gear.

The Guide Pick is an example of the listed item, giving you an idea of the material and specifications of the item. This exact item does not need to be purchased or used; however, any item you choose must have similar characteristics and performance abilities to the Guide Pick.

RMI Guides concur on the  potential   necessity  of every item, thus every item on the list is required at gear check. However, guides may also have suggestions derived from their experience, some of which will vary from a given list. The guides’ recommendation whether to bring along or leave behind certain item(s) comes during the gear check, when the team first meets. Occasionally this recommendation comes at the expense of having previously purchased an item. If a guide presents the option of leaving behind certain item(s) on the list of required equipment, it is for a reason. Their recommendation may be related to the weather, route conditions, freezing level, perceived strength of the party, or desired pack weight.

Ultimately, there will never be a consensus for a “perfect” equipment list for an ascent. It does not exist because of the multitude of variables faced by climbers throughout the climb. Please follow this equipment list closely so that you will arrive for the gear check with all the required items. Keep in mind the list is not black and white, fine tuning will occur once you meet with your guide. Have a great climb!

The length of your axe depends on your height. Use the following general mountaineering formula: up to 5'8", use a 65 cm axe; 5'8" to 6'2", use a 70 cm axe; and taller, use a 75 cm axe. If you hold the axe so that it hangs comfortably at your side, the spike of the axe should still be a few inches above the ground.

Image of CLIMBING HARNESS

We recommend a comfortable, adjustable alpine climbing harness. Removable, drop seat, or adjustable leg loops are convenient for managing your clothing layers over the course of the climb and facilitate going to the bathroom.

Image of TRIPLE-ACTION LOCKING CARABINER

Used for clipping into the climbing rope.

Image of NON-LOCKING CARABINER(S)

Used for pack ditch loop, etc.

Image of CRAMPONS

12-point adjustable steel crampons with anti-balling plates designed for general mountaineering use.

Image of AVALANCHE TRANSCEIVER WITH FRESH BATTERIES

Bring extra batteries appropriate to the duration of the climb.

Image of TREKKING POLES

We recommend lightweight and collapsible poles with snow baskets.

Image of HELMET

A UIAA (Union Internationale des Associations d’Alpinisme) or CE (European Committee for Standardization) certified climbing helmet.

Image of WARM HAT

Wool or synthetic. It should provide warmth but also be thin enough to fit underneath a climbing helmet.

Image of BALL CAP OR SUN HAT

A Buff provides versitile head and neck protection. A neck gaiter is also acceptable.

Image of HEADLAMP

Start with fresh batteries and bring extra set(s) of batteries appropriate to the duration of the trip.

Image of GLACIER GLASSES

Glacier glasses are protective sunglasses that provide close to 100% frame coverage (wrap-around frames and side shields ensure no light can enter from the top, bottom, and sides of the glasses) and transmit less than 10% of visual light.

Image of GOGGLES

Amber or rose-tinted goggles for adverse weather. On windy days, climbers, especially contact lens wearers, may find photochromatic lenses the most versatile in a variety of light conditions.

Each glove layer is worn separately as conditions change during the climb.

Image of LIGHT WEIGHT GLOVES

Light weight liner or softshell gloves. Lighter colors absorb less sunlight while still offering UV protection.

Image of MEDIUM WEIGHT GLOVES

Wind- and water-resistant, insulated mountain gloves.

Image of HEAVY WEIGHT GLOVES OR MITTENS

Wind- and water-resistant, insulated gloves or mittens. These also serve as emergency backups if you drop or lose a lighter-weight glove.

We recommend a minimum of five upper body layers, all of which can be used in conjunction with each other. Two of these should be insulating layers, one light, and one medium, that fit well together. Today there are many different layering systems to choose from, including fleece, softshell, down, and synthetic options.

Image of LIGHT WEIGHT BASELAYER OR SUN HOODY

Long-sleeve wool or synthetic top. Light weight, light-colored, hooded baselayers (sun hoodys) are highly recommended for sun protection.

Image of LIGHT WEIGHT INSULATING LAYER

One step up in warmth and bulk from a baselayer. A technical fleece makes an ideal light weight insulating layer.

Image of MEDIUM WEIGHT INSULATING LAYER

A down, synthetic, or softshell hoody makes a great midlayer.

Image of RAIN JACKET (HARD SHELL)

An uninsulated, waterproof shell jacket with hood.

Image of INSULATED PARKA WITH HOOD

Your expedition-style heavy parka must extend below the waist, have an insulated hood, and be able to fit over the rest of your upper body layers. While the parka is worn primarily at rest breaks on summit day, it also serves as an emergency garment if needed. We recommend down rather than synthetic fill.

Image of SPORTS BRA

We recommend a moisture-wicking, active-wear bra.

We recommend a system of four layers, all of which can be used in conjunction with each other. Products which combine several layers into one garment, such as traditional ski pants, don’t work well as they don’t offer the versatility of a layering system.

Image of PAIRS OF UNDERWEAR

Non-cotton briefs or boxers.

Image of LIGHT WEIGHT BASELAYER

Synthetic or wool.

Image of SOFTSHELL CLIMBING PANTS

Softshell climbing pants can be worn in combination with a base layer on colder days, or alone on warmer days.

Image of RAIN PANTS WITH FULL-LENGTH SIDE ZIPPERS (HARD SHELL)

Non-insulated, waterproof shell pants must be able to fit comfortable over your baselayer bottoms and softshell climbing pants. Full side zippers or 7/8 side zippers are required so that shell pants can be put on while wearing boots and crampons.

Image of LIGHT WEIGHT TREKKING PANTS OR SHORTS

A light weight, synthetic pair of pants is a good option for the approach trek when hiking at lower altitudes and in warm conditions. These pants have no insulation, are typically made of thin nylon, and commonly feature zippers to convert between pants and shorts.

We recommend modern hybrid double boots for this climb because they provide the best balance of weight, comfort, and insulation. Insulated single mountaineering boots are also adequate but might result in cold feet. Bring one pair of chemical foot warmers per summit day if you are using single mountaineering boots.

Image of RAINIER AND 5000 METER SINGLE BOOT TEXT

SINGLE BOOTS: Insulated, full-shank, and crampon-compatible leather or synthetic boots designed for mountaineering. Single boots tend to be lighter and more comfortable than double boots at the expense of warmth.

Image of RAINIER AND 5000 METER DOUBLE BOOT TEXT

DOUBLE BOOTS:  Insulated double boots designed for mountaineering. Plastic-shelled models are acceptable, though modern synthetic models are lighter and more comfortable.

Image of HIKING BOOTS

A pair of lightweight boots for approaches and hiking on rugged terrain. We recommend a waterproof, mid-top boot for better stability and ankle support.

Image of CASUAL SHOES

Great for traveling and wearing around town or camp. A pair of tennis shoes or light hikers works well.

Image of GAITERS

A knee-length pair of gaiters, large enough to fit over your mountaineering boots. This will protect you from catching your crampon spikes on loose clothing. Not needed if using a boot with an integrated gaiter.

Image of PAIRS OF SOCKS

Either wool or synthetic. Whatever sock combination you are accustomed to wearing during your training or previous adventures (whether single medium weight socks, a medium weight with a liner sock, two medium weight socks together, etc.), should work just fine for this climb.

First Aid & Medications

We recommend you speak with your physician about which medications you should have for high-altitude climbing. These medications are only used in emergency situations, and if someone is showing symptoms of HAPE or HACE, our standard protocol is for immediate descent. We do not take any of these medications prophylactically, and please talk with your guide before taking medications.

We require each climber to have the following medications:

Broad spectrum antibiotics for respiratory and gastrointestinal problems like Azithromycin (250mg tablets).

125mg tablets for the prevention or treatment of Acute Mountain Sickness. A normal prescription is 125mg tablets, twice a day. Recommend 15 - 20 tablets.

4mg tablets for the treatment of altitude illness. Recommend 12 tablets.

30mg slow-release tablets for the prevention or treatment of high-altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE). Recommend 8 - 10 tablets.

Image of SMALL PERSONAL FIRST AID KIT

Our guides carry comprehensive medical kits, so keep yours small and light. We recommend a selection of adhesive bandages, antibiotic ointment, Moleskin and blister care, medical tape and/or duct tape, cough drops, basic painkillers, an antacid, an anti-diarrheal, and personal medications.

Personal Items

Image of MEALS & SNACKS

See the Food tab for suggestions and quantities.

Image of INSULATED MUG

Insulated outdoor-style mug. We recommed a model with a removable lid, which helps retain heat and prevent spills. You may also choose to use 0.5L insulated bottle or a 0.5L nalgene.

Image of WATER BOTTLES

One-liter water bottles with wide mouths made of co-polyester (BPA-free plastic).

Image of AQUAMIRA WATER TREATMENT DROPS

Chlorine Dioxide water purification drops. Make sure to select the 30-minute version.

Image of STUFF SACK(S)

Bring as needed.

Image of LARGE GARBAGE BAGS

Heavy-duty trash compacter bags for use as waterproof pack/stuff sack liners. You can also use a a waterproof pack liner.

Image of POCKETKNIFE

Include toilet paper, hand sanitizer, toothbrush and toothpaste, and wet wipes. Bring a quantity appropriate to the duration of your trip.

Image of SUNSCREEN

We recommend small tubes of SPF 30 or higher, which can be carried in pockets for easy access and to prevent freezing.

Image of LIP BALM

We recommend SPF 15 or higher.

Image of EAR PLUGS

Spare prescription glasses if you wear contact lenses/eyeglasses.

Image of PAIRS CHEMICAL HAND WARMERS

Practice using this before coming on the climb!

Image of CAMERA (OPTIONAL)

Many smartphones have excellent cameras. Action cameras, small point-and-shoots, and compact dSLRs are lightweight and work well at altitude.

Image of POWER BANK (OPTIONAL)

A small power bank, enough to charge a phone or e-reader several times.

For charging personal electronics while traveling internationally.

Travel Clothes

Image of TRAVEL CLOTHES

We recommend bringing a selection of clothing to wear while traveling, site seeing and dining.

Travel Documents

Valid for six months beyond your return date.

The first two pages of your passport.

Pre-Trip Checklist

Purchase travel insurance.

Purchase airplane tickets.

Reserve rental equipment.

Be in the best shape of your life!

Provided Equipment

RMI provides the following equipment for your program: huts, stoves, group cooking equipment, fuel, climbing ropes, climbing anchors, avalanche probes and shovels.

Every guide on your climb will carry rescue equipment and a first aid kit. Each climb has two-way radios and a satellite phone for emergency contact.

On Mt. Elbrus South Side you will need 5 days of mountain snacks. All of your mountain snack items should weigh 3 - 4 lb.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner meals on the mountain are included as indicated in our Trip Itinerary . With the exception of hotel breakfasts, most restaurant meals are on your own. You are responsible for your own bottled water and drinks.

Mountain Snacks

You will want to have a few snack items with you everyday to fuel you up the trail. We continually snack to keep our energy levels up while we climb - lunch begins just after breakfast and ends just before dinner! Avoid packing any items that require preparation or hot water.

The importance of having foods that are genuinely enjoyed cannot be overstated. Eating properly is the key to maintaining strength while in the mountains. In order to combat the loss of appetite at altitude we aim to have a variety of foods that stimulate the whole palate, from sweet to sour to salty.

Recommended mountain lunch items: dry salami, smoked salmon, jerky (turkey, beef, fish), small cans of tuna fish, individually wrapped cheeses such as Laughing Cow or Baby Bell, crackers, bagels, candy bars, hard candies (Jolly Ranchers, Toffees, Life Savers), Gummy Bears, sour candies (Sweet Tarts), cookies, dried fruit, nuts, energy bars, GORP mixes, and drink mixes (Gatorade/Kool-Aid).

We may have a chance to purchase additional food in Russia, but we recommend you take what you need and only supplement with local food if necessary.

The breakfast menu includes items such as instant oatmeal, cold cereals (granola), breakfast bars, hot drinks (coffee, tea, cocoa, cider) and local fresh fruit.

Dinner usually begins with soup and ends with dessert, followed by a round of hot drinks. Healthy one-pot meals, incorporating fresh local food whenever practical, are served as the main course. There are limitations, but the menu is planned to offer good variety and ample portions.

Deposit Payments: A non-refundable deposit payment of $1,500 per person secures your reservation.

  • Deposit payments may be made via MasterCard, Visa, American Express*, e-check/ACH, or check from a U.S. bank.

Balance Payments: The balance payment is due 120 days before the start of your program.

  • **Wire transfers must cover all fees charged by your bank. The amount of the incoming wire to our bank must equal the balance payment amount.
  • A payment reminder is emailed approximately three weeks before your payment due date. If your balance payment is not received 120 days before the start of your program, your reservation will be canceled, and all program fees will be forfeited.
  • Payment in full is required when registering for a program within 120 days of the departure date.

*There is a 3% surcharge on all credit/debit card transactions. Credit/debit cards are not accepted for payments of $10,000 or more.

Cancellation

The $1,500 per person deposit is non-refundable and non-transferable .

  • If you cancel 120 or more days before the start of your program, the $1,500 per person deposit will not be refunded.
  • If you cancel less than 120 days before the start of your program, no refunds will be issued .

Due to the time-sensitive nature of these programs, and the amount of preparation time required for this program, we strictly adhere to our policy and cannot make exceptions for any reason.

Risk Management

Please clearly understand that mountaineering is inherently hazardous. Managing risk is RMI’s number one priority. Our guides manage significant hazards inherent in mountaineering, but they cannot eliminate them.  Objective hazards include rockfall, icefall, avalanches, slides or falls by individuals and rope teams on steeper slopes, weather-related problems including cold, heat, high winds, and other unnamed dangers that can occur while climbing.

You are choosing to engage in an activity in which guided and non-guided climbers have been injured or killed. While those accidents are indeed infrequent, they may occur at any time and be out of our control. We ask that participants acknowledge the risks and hazards of mountaineering and make their own choices about whether or not to engage in this activity.

PARTICIPANT Responsibilities

Mountaineering is both an individual challenge and a team endeavor. Each Participant is required to share in the responsibility of the safety and success of the team. For this reason, we ask that each Participant:

  • Possess the climbing prerequisites required for this program.
  • Possess the necessary physical and mental fitness required for this program.
  • Be responsible for knowing all pre-departure information.
  • Provide a signed Physician’s Certificate stating that the Participant is medically qualified to join this program.
  • Update the RMI Office if there are any changes to your health or medical information before departure.
  • Be properly attired and equipped as outlined in the Equipment List.
  • Act in a considerate manner toward all team members and show respect for local customs, values, and traditions in the areas we travel.
  • Help minimize our impact on the environment and follow appropriate Leave No Trace practices.
  • Describe yourself, honestly and accurately, in terms of fitness, health, skills, abilities, and your equipment to your guide staff.
  • Communicate with your guide staff on the mountain if there are any changes in your medications or health.
  • Adhere to the advice of your guide staff.
  • Continue to self-assess throughout the program, measuring your fitness, health, skills, and abilities against the demands required of the program.

RMI reserves the right to dismiss the Participant from a program or to send the Participant to a lower altitude at any time if the RMI Guide Staff determines, in its sole discretion, that the Participant is not physically, technically, or psychologically prepared for, or capable of participating in the program, or for any other reason that may compromise the safety, health or well-being of the Participant or the entire group. If this decision is made, the Participant will not receive any refunds or credits and will be financially responsible for any additional costs associated with an early departure, including but not limited to, evacuation, transportation, hotel reservationss, meals, etc.

Zero Tolerance Harassment Policy

Rainier Mountaineering, Inc. (RMI) does not tolerate harassment or mistreatment of our participants or employees. Inappropriate conduct under this policy may include conduct that creates a disrespectful, intimidating, hostile, degrading, humiliating, or offensive environment for a participant or employee. Engaging in such conduct is a violation of this policy.

RMI may consider conduct to violate the policy even if it falls short of unlawful harassment under applicable law. When determining whether conduct violates this policy, we will consider whether a reasonable person could conclude that the conduct created an intimidating, hostile, degrading, or demeaning environment.

Violation of this policy may result in removal from a program, as well as refusal to provide services indefinitely. We place the utmost value on the safety of our participants and employees. Please report any incidents to RMI management.

Age requirements

All participants must be 18 years old at the time of registration.

Photo Release

RMI’s Photo Release outlines the terms and conditions for using your likeness in photographs, videos, or other digital media.

I hereby grant Rainier Mountaineering, Inc. (RMI) or its affiliates permission to use my likeness in a photograph, video, or other digital media (“photo”) in any and all of its publications, including web-based publications. By granting permission, you allow RMI to utilize these media for lawful purposes.

Here are the key points:

  • Authorization: You authorize RMI to edit, alter, copy, exhibit, publish, or distribute the photos.
  • Ownership: All photos become the property of RMI and will not be returned.
  • Compensation: You will not be compensated for these uses.
  • Rights: RMI exclusively owns all rights to the images, videos, and recordings and to any derivative works created from them.
  • Waiver: You waive the right to inspect or approve printed or electronic copies.
  • Release: You release Rainier Mountaineering, Inc. and its assigns and licensees from any claims arising from these uses, including defamation, invasion of privacy, rights of publicity, or copyright.
  • Hold Harmless: You hold harmless, release, and forever discharge RMI or its affiliates from any and all claims, demands, and causes of action which I, my heirs, representatives, executors, administrators, or any other persons acting on my behalf or on behalf of my estate have or may have by reason of this authorization.

Summit Attempt

RMI cannot guarantee that you will reach the summit. Weather, route conditions, your own abilities, or the abilities of other climbers may create circumstances that make an ascent unsafe, and you or your entire group may have to turnaround without reaching the summit.

Failure to reach the summit due to a person’s own lack of fitness or to any of the events associated with mountaineering (such as weather, route conditions, avalanche hazard, team dynamics, etc.), are not Rainier Mountaineering, Inc.’s responsibility and will not result in a refund, credit, or reschedule.

General Policies

RMI’s program schedule and itineraries are subject to change or adjustment based on a number of factors. These include, but are not limited to, route conditions, weather, group strength, terrain, other environmental factors, and many other factors. RMI has complete discretion to change plans to accommodate any of these or other factors, including but not limited to increases in program fees, changes to program schedule or itinerary, and changes to guides or staff, as necessary for the proper and safe conduct of the program. Once the program has started, the Lead Guide will decide on any changes to the itinerary, including ending the program early if the continuation of the program may compromise the safety, health, or well-being of the group.

We reserve the right to cancel any program due to inadequate signups, weather, route conditions, or for any other reason. In such a case, we will make every effort to reschedule the Participant on a different program date. If rescheduling is not possible, we will issue the Participant a refund for all program fees paid to RMI, less any non-refundable payments made on behalf of the Participant to secure any of the included land costs provided for this program, including, but not limited to, hotel accommodations, transportation, transfers, tours, group equipment and food, permits, and local outfitter services, prior to the cancellation of the program. Additionally, RMI cannot be responsible for any non-refundable expenses the Participant incurred in preparation for the program (i.e., airline tickets, hotel reservations, rental cars, equipment purchases or rentals, etc.).

Once a program begins, there are no refunds or credits for weather-related cancellations or for a program that may end early due to weather, route conditions, or any other circumstances that may compromise the health, safety, or well-being of the group. Furthermore, if the Participant decides for any reason not to begin a program or to discontinue a program at any time, no refunds or credits will be issued. The Participant will be responsible for all additional costs associated with an early departure, including but not limited to evacuation, transportation, hotel reservations, meals, etc.

The Participant is responsible for any costs due to COVID-19, including but not limited to, any testing fees to enter another country, tests required to return to the US, and/or costs associated with medical care and/or quarantine such as hotel accommodations, meals, separate transportation, etc.

Land Costs are provided as a package, and refunds or credits will not be issued for any unused meals, accommodations, group transportation, or other unused costs. Accommodations are based on double occupancy. A Single Supplement Fee will be charged to those Participants occupying single accommodations either by choice or circumstance. If you are willing to share a room, we will make every effort to pair you with another same-gender team member. We will match willing same-gender team members based on the order of registration date. If we are unable to match you with another same-gender team member, a single supplement fee will be charged. The availability of single accommodations is limited in most of the hotels where we stay, and single accommodations are not available while in the mountains.

The Participant understands and agrees that RMI assumes no responsibility or liability in connection with any travel and hospitality services provided to the Participant by other companies in connection with the program, including but not limited to, the services provided by airlines, hotels, rental cars, and transportation companies and that RMI is not responsible for any act, error, omission, or any injury, loss, accident, delay, irregularity, or danger by a supplier of travel or hospitality services to the Participant in connection with the RMI program. The Participant will be responsible for all costs associated with any travel delays, missed connections, or missing baggage that requires additional arrangements (separate transportation, hotel accommodations, meals, etc.) to be made on your behalf for you or your baggage to rejoin the program.

Mount Elbert the tallest mountain in Colorado seen from the valley floor on a clear blue day

Mount Elbert, Colorado: How to Hike the Tallest Peak in the Rocky Mountains

14,438-foot Mount Elbert offers accessible routes ascending to the highest point in the Rockies. Here's the best way to tackle this trek.

Happy dog looking out on a blue sky from the summit of Colorado's Mount Elbert

Mount Elbert’s status as the highest peak in Colorado is disguised by its modest yet massive profile. The mountain’s once-jagged contours have been smoothed out by ancient glaciers, a characteristic shared by many of its neighboring Sawatch Range summits. Millennia of erosion has transformed Mount Elbert into a gentle giant, offering several non-technical hikes to the top. The standard route most hikers use is the Mount Elbert Trail, located just outside of the town of Leadville, Colorado.

I’ve hiked to Mount Elbert’s summit ten times. I’ve been up in every season, with and without dogs, and with hiking companions of various fitness levels. It’s one of my favorite 14ers in Colorado and I’m certain I’ll be back again. Based on my experience, the key to enjoying Mount Elbert is knowing what to expect and how to prepare for this venerable king of the Rockies.

Mount Elbert via the Mount Elbert Trail

The aptly named Mount Elbert Trail is the best-maintained route to the summit. This non-technical path is a Class 1 walk-up with a smattering of easy Class 2 terrain near the top. By Colorado standards, this is a moderately difficult route whose primary concern is the high altitude. The burly 4,500 feet of elevation gain is no joke, but thankfully, the trail is well-maintained and easy to navigate.

Mount Elbert Trail Stats

📍 Distance : 9.3 miles out-and-back ⏱️ Hiking Time: 5 – 7 hours ⛰️ Starting Elevation: 10,066 feet at Mount Elbert Trailhead 🥾 Total Elevation Gain: 4,500 feet ☀️ Best Time to Hike: June through September

Getting There: Mount Elbert Trailhead

Google Maps GPS Coordinates : 39.15192368628267, -106.41243389546963

Mount Elbert is about a 30-minute drive from Leadville. From town, go 3.5 miles south on US Highway 24. Turn right (south) onto CO Highway 300. Go 0.7 miles and turn left onto CO Highway 11, also called Halfmoon Road. Follow this for 1.8 miles, then turn right to continue on CO 11/Halfmoon Road. Here, pavement turns into a well-maintained dirt track, passable by all vehicles (except in snowy conditions, of course). Go 6.8 miles until you hit the Mount Elbert Trailhead on your left. Directly across from the trailhead is the Elbert Creek Campground , a first-come, first-served campground with 17 sites and a restroom. ($22 per night)

About 500 feet past the campground, there is free primitive camping, mainly on the left side of the road. Note that the road becomes more rugged past the campground, and you should use a 4×4 vehicle if you explore this area.

What to Expect on the Hike

Hikers on shoulder of mountain

The Mount Elbert Trail starts in a pine forest and gets right down to business. Its ascent begins quickly, so don’t go too hard out of the gate. At 0.9 miles, the Mount Elbert Trail splits at a signed junction from the common path it temporarily shares with the Colorado Trail.

From here, it’s a big push to the top. At about 12,000 feet, the trail breaks through treeline into alpine tundra where the real work begins. Morning clouds often settle in the valleys below, amplifying the sensation of high elevation. There are no significant sections of exposure as the trail follows the rounded terrain of the Northeast Ridge.

At 3.1 miles, don’t be fooled by a false summit at the top of a rocky portion of the trail. Above this point, the trail eventually gains the broad summit shoulder and tops out at roughly 4.7 miles. Once you’ve soaked in the views from the tallest mountain in Colorado, return the way you came.

Navigation is relatively easy, barring any significant fog, storms, or clouds.

Tips and Advice for Maximizing Your Mount Elbert Hike

Hikers emerge from treeline

Two major concerns when hiking Mount Elbert are altitude sickness and lightning storms . The good news? You can mitigate both with a bit of Rocky Mountain wisdom.

  • Altitude sickness can affect even well-acclimated Colorado locals at these high elevations. Out-of-town hikers should take extra care when dealing with altitude. If possible, aim to build a progression of elevation gain the couple of days before you tackle Mount Elbert. This can make a huge difference in succeeding on the 14er—and feeling good when you do it. To do this, sleep at 7,000 – 8,500 feet two nights before, then 9,000 – 10,000 feet the night before your hike, to help your body adjust to the thin air. Note that both the Elbert Creek Campground and lodging in the town of Leadville sit at 10,000 feet. Even if you toss and turn a bit, spending the night at this elevation will increase red blood cells and help with the lower oxygen levels at 14,000 feet.
  • Storms are normal in spring, summer, and early autumn. Most roll in about 1 – 2 P.M. daily during these times. My advice is to start early, around or before 5 A.M. Make it your goal to be off the summit no later than 11 A.M. Check the local forecast. If thunderstorms are forecast earlier than noon, consider hiking another day. Lightning storms above treeline are dangerous, as there’s nowhere to seek shelter.

Other Things to Know Before You Hike Mount Elbert

  • Food and hydration will keep you powered up and cramp-free. Eating a big, carbohydrate-rich dinner the night before is a good strategy (especially if you, like me, don’t have much of a pre-dawn appetite for a hearty breakfast). Bring three liters of water for the day and sip regularly—dehydration can sneak up on you at high altitudes. Remember to keep drinking and snacking on the way down as well. Gels and energy blocks can help if your stomach is not up for richer, denser foods.
  • Sunblock, UPF long-sleeved shirts, and polarized sunglasses will prevent intense solar rays from roasting your skin and punishing your eyes.
  • Bring layers adequate for cold, windy conditions. This should include a warm mid-layer, like a puffy jacket, as well as a waterproof rain shell, a winter hat, gloves, and a neck gaiter. Even if it’s hot at lower elevations, the temperatures and wind at 14,000+ feet can make summer days feel like winter.
  • Light hikers or boots and hiking poles will help reduce wear and tear on your knees and legs. Because there is no technical terrain on the Mount Elbert Trail, light hikers usually work just fine as long as the mountain is free of snow. (The snowpack typically melts by the 4th of July.)
  • A daypack with enough room to carry your layers and snacks is a no-brainer.
  • A navigation app like Gaia GPS will keep you on track and record your adventure. Even though there’s really only one major, well-marked turn, people do miss it in the morning darkness and wander along the Colorado Trail, blissfully unaware that they are going the wrong way.
  • A headlamp, first-aid kit, and map (either digital or, better, physical paper) round out my ideal gear list.
  • Dogs are allowed on the mountain. Make sure that you have plenty of water and food for your pup, though. Experienced hiking dogs will have a lot of fun on Mount Elbert, but keep them on leash due to the presence of other hikers and wildlife, like marmots and pikas.

Final Thoughts

Terrain on Mount Elbert Colorado with Snow

Mount Elbert will be more enjoyable if you have solid fitness, altitude acclimation, and the right gear. The elevation gain is gradual but will still fizzle out your legs if you haven’t already logged uphill miles before your adventure. Training on mountains with 2,500 – 3,000 feet of elevation gain and distances of 6 – 10 miles will prime your body for an excellent day on Elbert.

For out-of-towners and beginners, consider tackling a progression of hikes over four or five days to prepare for Mount Elbert. I suggest starting with 8,460-foot Bear Peak in Boulder , then take a rest day. On day three, hike 13,229-foot Mount Audubon (near Boulder) or 13,433-foot Grizzly Peak D off of Loveland Pass. Then, take another rest day, sleeping at over 8,000 feet. End with your Mount Elbert climb on day five, after you’ve built up stamina for both altitude and steep ascents.

In my experience, Mount Elbert is actually on the easier side compared to other Colorado 14ers. The collection of 58 peaks that make up the recognized 14ers has a wide range of difficulties, and Elbert’s non-technical, well-documented route makes it a challenging but accessible adventure for 14er newbies. Plus, in years when Colorado’s snowstorms arrive later in the winter and spring, it’s possible to enjoy a snow-free hike as late as mid-October, which is a special treat because lightning storms are less prevalent, and the crisp, cool air can keep hot hikers like myself more comfortable.

All told, Mount Elbert is a stunning adventure that is most fun when you use a winning strategy to hike to the summit. Start early, acclimate, eat and drink regularly before and during your hike, and watch the weather. Oh, and don’t forget to enjoy your brief tenure as the highest person in Colorado before you make the descent.

RUSSIAN MOUNTAIN MAJESTY

Climbers rugged up against the cold on Elbrus

Elbrus, Europe's highest peak, is a giant dormant volcano that separates Europe from Asia. The straightforward yet spectacular climb is contrasted by the cultural wonders of enigmatic Russia.

With short 12 or 14 day options, the Elbrus Expedition is an ideal objective as your first or second of the Seven Summits.

Adventure Consultants offers two options for climbing Elbrus. For those who wish to explore some of Russia's most beautiful cultural cities, Trip 1 is 14 days in duration and starts in St Petersburg and finishes in Moscow. Our shorter Trip 2 is 12 days long and starts and finishes in Moscow.

A cable car takes us up to accommodation at the base of the climb where we learn basic snow and ice techniques from the guides prior to the ascent. The summit day entails climbing long snow slopes with views over the wooded valleys to the surrounding peaks.

What's next on your Seven Summits Pathway ?

The ascent of Elbrus is a physically challenging ascent involving around 1,500m of elevation gain. A high level of fitness is important for a successful ascent, as summit day is often 12-hours in length. Be sure to include some long, endurance training into your fitness regimen.

No technical climbing experience required. We do recommend that you join an introductory mountaineering instruction course such as our Chamonix Introductory Mountaineering Course or Europe Private Instruction Course prior to the expedition if you have time, but it is not essential, as there are opportunities to practice and review basic snowcraft skills prior to the summit attempt, which makes an ascent of Elbrus a great option for any fit mountain enthusiast.

No prior altitude experience required.

Embark on the Teton Crest Trail for a 40-mile adventure through Grand Teton National Park, where towering peaks, alpine lakes, and wildflower meadows create a stunning and unforgettable wilderness experience. Embrace nature’s beauty and challenges.

adventure mountain treks

The Teton Crest Trail is one of the premier backpacking routes in the United States, renowned for its breathtaking scenery and challenging terrain. Spanning approximately 40 miles (64 kilometers), the trail traverses the backbone of the Teton Range, offering hikers unparalleled views of jagged peaks, verdant meadows, and crystal-clear alpine lakes. With an elevation gain of approximately 8,000 feet (2,438 meters), the trail is typically completed in four to six days, depending on the pace and experience level of the hikers.

The journey begins at the Phillips Pass Trailhead and ends at the String Lake Trailhead, although some variations and alternative routes are available. Along the way, hikers pass through iconic landmarks such as Death Canyon Shelf, Alaska Basin, and Hurricane Pass. The highest point on the trail is Paintbrush Divide at 10,700 feet (3,261 meters). Each section of the trail presents unique challenges and rewards, making the Teton Crest Trail a must-do for avid backpackers.

Teton Crest, Grand Teton National Park.

Getting to the Trailhead

The Teton Crest Trail can be accessed from several trailheads, with the most popular starting point being the Phillips Pass Trailhead. To reach this trailhead, hikers typically fly into Jackson Hole Airport, located approximately 20 miles from Grand Teton National Park. From the airport, it’s a scenic drive through the park to the trailhead.

Phillips Pass Trailhead: The Phillips Pass Trailhead is situated at an elevation of 8,400 feet and provides a direct entry into the heart of the Teton Crest Trail. The trailhead is accessible via Highway 22 from Jackson, Wyoming, followed by a drive on the unpaved but well-maintained Teton Pass Road. Parking is available at the trailhead, but spaces can fill up quickly during peak season, so early arrival is recommended.

Granite Canyon Trailhead: An alternative starting point is the Granite Canyon Trailhead, located near Teton Village. This trailhead offers a slightly longer approach but provides a more gradual ascent into the Teton Crest Trail. To reach this trailhead, hikers can take the Jackson Hole Aerial Tram to the top of Rendezvous Mountain and then hike down to Granite Canyon, or they can hike directly from Teton Village.

Death Canyon Trailhead: The Death Canyon Trailhead is another option for accessing the Teton Crest Trail. Located near the White Grass Ranger Station, this trailhead involves a steep climb up to Death Canyon Shelf, where hikers can connect with the main trail. This route is more strenuous but rewards hikers with stunning views of Death Canyon and the surrounding peaks.

Jackson Hole Mountain Resort Tram: For a more unique entry, take the aerial tram from Teton Village up to Rendezvous Mountain. This option skips some of the initial climbing and starts you off with high-altitude vistas right away.

Transportation to and from the trailheads can be arranged through local shuttle services or by parking a vehicle at one of the designated parking areas. It’s important to plan transportation logistics in advance, as parking can be limited during peak hiking season.

Places to Stay

While the Teton Crest Trail is primarily a backcountry experience, there are several accommodation options for hikers before and after their trek. In Jackson, Wyoming, a variety of hotels, lodges, and campgrounds are available to suit different budgets and preferences. Some popular options include the Jackson Lake Lodge, Jenny Lake Lodge, and the Signal Mountain Lodge.

Jackson Lake Lodge: Jackson Lake Lodge, located within Grand Teton National Park, offers stunning views of the Teton Range and is an ideal place to stay before or after your trek. The lodge features comfortable rooms, dining options, and easy access to various park activities. It’s a great place to relax and recharge after a challenging hike.

Jenny Lake Lodge: Jenny Lake Lodge provides a more intimate and luxurious stay, with rustic cabins nestled in a serene forest setting. The lodge offers fine dining, guided activities, and proximity to some of the park’s most popular attractions, including Jenny Lake and the Cascade Canyon.

Signal Mountain Lodge: For a more budget-friendly option, Signal Mountain Lodge offers a range of accommodations from rustic cabins to campsites. The lodge is located on the shores of Jackson Lake, providing easy access to boating, fishing, and hiking. It’s a perfect base for exploring the park and preparing for the Teton Crest Trail.

Backcountry Camping

For those looking to camp along the trail, backcountry permits are required and can be obtained from the park’s visitor centers. The park has designated camping zones along the trail, including sites at Marion Lake, Death Canyon Shelf, and Alaska Basin. These campsites offer stunning views and a chance to immerse oneself in the natural beauty of the park.

On the Teton Crest Trail, there are 11 designated campsites available for backpackers. These sites operate on a first-come, first-serve basis for groups of six or less after obtaining a permit. For larger groups, there are specific group sites marked with signs that can only be used by designated permit-holders. To learn more about the backcountry campsites, visit the NPS website . The individual campsites include Cascade Canyon (North and South Forks), Death Canyon, Garnet Canyon, Granite & Open Canyon, Holly Lake, Lower Paintbrush, Marion Lake, Phelps Lake, Upper Paintbrush, and Surprise Lake.

Marion Lake: Marion Lake is a popular first-night campsite, offering a peaceful setting and stunning views of the surrounding peaks. The lake is a great spot for a refreshing swim after a day of hiking, and the nearby meadows are often filled with wildflowers in the summer.

Death Canyon: Camping on Death Canyon provides hikers with breathtaking views of the canyon and the Teton Range. The shelf is an exposed, high-altitude area, so be prepared for changing weather conditions. The sunrise and sunset views from this campsite are truly spectacular.

Teton National Park has provided a map of the Teton Crest Trail, displaying the distances between campsites and the overall elevation of the route.

Trail Conditions and Weather

The Teton Crest Trail is best hiked from late July to early September, when the snow has melted and the weather is most favorable. However, even during this period, hikers should be prepared for rapidly changing conditions. Afternoon thunderstorms are common, and temperatures can vary significantly between day and night.

Trail conditions can range from well-maintained paths to rocky and uneven terrain. Hikers should be prepared for steep ascents and descents, particularly in areas like Paintbrush Divide and Hurricane Pass. Proper footwear and trekking poles are highly recommended to navigate the challenging terrain.

Wildlife and Flora

Grand Teton National Park is home to a diverse array of wildlife, including black bears, moose, elk, and marmots. Hikers should take precautions to store food properly and carry bear spray. The park’s wildflower meadows are particularly stunning in mid-summer, with species such as Indian paintbrush, lupine, and alpine forget-me-nots adding vibrant colors to the landscape.

Water Sources

Water sources are plentiful along the trail, with numerous streams and alpine lakes providing opportunities to refill. However, all water should be treated or filtered before consumption to prevent waterborne illnesses. Hikers should plan their water resupply points in advance, particularly in dry sections of the trail.

Altitude and Acclimatization

The Teton Crest Trail reaches elevations of over 10,000 feet, so hikers should be aware of the potential for altitude sickness. Proper acclimatization is important, and it’s recommended to spend a few days at higher elevations before starting the trek. Hydration, nutrition, and pacing are key to preventing altitude-related issues.

Day 1: Phillips Pass Trailhead to Marion Lake

The adventure begins at the Phillips Pass Trailhead, where the initial climb quickly reveals stunning views of the Teton Range. The trail meanders through lush forests and open meadows, gradually gaining elevation. After a challenging ascent, we reach Marion Lake, our first campsite. The lake is a serene oasis, reflecting the towering peaks that surround it. Setting up camp, we take in the beauty of the landscape and enjoy a well-deserved rest after our first day on the trail.

Day 2: Marion Lake to Death Canyon Shelf

Leaving Marion Lake, we continue our journey along the Teton Crest Trail. The trail traverses Death Canyon Shelf, offering panoramic views of the valley below. The wildflower meadows are in full bloom, painting the landscape with vibrant colors. We set up camp on the shelf, with the imposing peaks of the Tetons as our backdrop. As the sun sets, the sky is painted with hues of pink and orange, creating a magical atmosphere that highlights the beauty of this remote area.

Day 3: Death Canyon Shelf to Alaska Basin

The trail descends into the stunning Alaska Basin, a high-altitude plateau dotted with alpine lakes and granite outcroppings. The terrain is rugged but incredibly rewarding, with breathtaking vistas at every turn. We camp near Sunset Lake, enjoying a spectacular sunset that bathes the landscape in warm hues. The clear night sky reveals a blanket of stars, and we fall asleep to the soothing sounds of nature.

Day 4: Alaska Basin to Hurricane Pass

Leaving Alaska Basin, we ascend to Hurricane Pass, one of the most challenging sections of the trail. The climb is steep and strenuous, but the views from the pass are unparalleled. The Grand Teton looms majestically in the distance, and we can see for miles in every direction. We descend into the South Fork Cascade Canyon, finding a peaceful campsite by a babbling brook. The sense of isolation and tranquility here is profound, allowing us to fully disconnect from the outside world.

Day 5: South Fork Cascade Canyon to North Fork Cascade Canyon

Our journey continues through the lush and vibrant South Fork Cascade Canyon. The trail winds through dense forests and along cascading waterfalls, offering a stark contrast to the high alpine terrain we’ve traversed so far. We take our time, enjoying the cooler temperatures and abundant shade. As we make our way to the North Fork Cascade Canyon, the scenery shifts once again, with towering granite walls and expansive meadows. We find a secluded campsite and settle in for the night, reflecting on the diverse landscapes we’ve encountered.

Day 6: North Fork Cascade Canyon to String Lake Trailhead

Our final day on the trail takes us through the beautiful Cascade Canyon, with its lush vegetation and cascading waterfalls. The trail eventually levels out as we approach String Lake, where our journey concludes. The sense of accomplishment is palpable as we reflect on the incredible landscapes we’ve traversed and the challenges we’ve overcome. We take a moment to soak our tired feet in the cool waters of String Lake, savoring the last moments of our adventure.

The Teton Crest Trail is a journey of a lifetime, offering hikers a chance to experience the raw beauty of Grand Teton National Park. From towering peaks to tranquil alpine lakes, the trail presents a diverse array of landscapes that captivate the senses and challenge the spirit. Whether you’re an experienced backpacker or a novice hiker, the Teton Crest Trail promises an unforgettable adventure.

Preparation is key to a successful trek, including securing permits, planning logistics, and ensuring you have the proper gear. With careful planning and a sense of adventure, the Teton Crest Trail can provide a wilderness experience like no other, leaving you with memories that will last a lifetime.

Embark on this journey with respect for the natural world and a readiness to embrace the challenges and rewards of the trail. The Teton Crest Trail awaits, offering a truly extraordinary adventure in the heart of the American wilderness.

Helicopter Tours are…not the cheapest, but this 1 hour airplane flight is relatively affordable. If you can’t hike to Everest, this is the next best and cheapest option for seeing the world’s highest mountain.

2. Explore Nepal’s Rich Cultural Heritage

Nepal is well known for its vibrant cultural heritage and its unique mix of religions, from Buddhism and Hinduism to shamanism. Home to four UNESCO World Heritage Sites, many more captivating cultural sites and monuments are scattered throughout the country that narrates the story of this ancient land.

Most people start their journey in the touristy area of Thamel, Kathmandu . This capital city is built around some of the world’s most beautiful temples and shrines, including Kathmandu Durbar Square, and Swayambhunath Stupa. Other cities like Patan, Bhaktapur, and Lumbini are well-known for their old-world charm and architecture.

UNESCO World Heritage Sites:

  • Kathmandu Valley (7 sites included):  Pashupatinath Temple, Swayambhunath Stupa, Kathmandu Durbar Square, Bhaktapur Durbar Square, Lalitpur Durbar Square, Boudhanath Stupa, Changu Narayan Temple
  • Lumbini:  Birthplace of Lord Buddha. Other notable sites nearby – Maya Devi Temple, World Peace Stupa, and the eternal flame.
  • Sagarmatha National Park:  Area includes the world’s tallest mountain, Mt. Everest, and other famous peaks like Lhotse, Pumori, Cho Oyu, Nuptse, and Ama Dablam.

3. Celebrate Nepal’s Many Festivals

Nepal is a land of festivals, and the local people celebrate a wide range of religious and cultural occasions with great fanfare…basically once a month.

Festival season in October and November consists of Dashain, the biggest festival of the year lasting two whole weeks, followed almost immediately by Diwali (Tihar), another 5-day long celebration. Other popular festivals include Holi, Buddha’s birthday, and Mahashivaratri (one of the weirdest festivals I’ve seen).

During these times, the people of Nepal come together to enjoy heartfelt family gatherings, lively traditional music and dances, overflowing delicious feasts, and colorful decorations.

Check  this calender  for the full list of Nepal’s vibrant festivals. Note that since Nepal uses a different calendar system, the dates for the celebrations are different every year.

4. Feel the Power of The Local Cuisine, 24 Hours

Nepali cuisine is an unusual mixture of Indian and Tibetan flavors. Nepalese food is well known for its yummy curries and dumplings, as well as the various spices used in typical dishes. But much less spicy than Indian Indian food.

The most popular dishes include dishes such as momos (dumplings), dal bhat (lentils and rice), and their famed dairy products, like Lassi (yogurt drink) and Juju Dhau (king curd).

Tip #1:  Dal Bhat is typically served as an endless buffet option. Servers will come around occasionally to see if you would like to top up on any of the 5-10 dishes offered.

Tip #2:  The best place to indulge on dairy products is Bhaktapur, which is famous for it.

Try the local version of a steak called “sukuti”, which is made from sun-dried buffalo meat. Or select from a wide variety of snacks, such as sel roti (rice doughnuts), chatamari (Nepali pizza), and bara (rice pancakes).

Try Your Hand at Nepalese Momos or Dal Bhat During This Cooking Class

5. Experience the Rush of Adventure Adrenaline Sports

Nepal is a paradise for adventurers seeking an adrenaline rush. You can go paragliding , bungee jumping, or rafting in the raging rivers of Nepal. For mountain biking enthusiasts, there are plenty of trails through the Himalayas to explore.

Nepal actually has the 10th largest bungee jumping location in the world, situated at The Last Resort. This luxury eco-resort is on the banks of the Bhote Kosi River, just a few hours’ drive from Kathmandu. The resort offers guests a range of activities and amenities, including white water rafting, Tarzan swing, rock climbing, and mountain biking.

Nepal is home to an abundance of water resources, including numerous rivers and lakes that offer a wide range of recreational activities, such as white water rafting and kayaking. The country’s rivers are fed by the melting snow and ice of the Himalayan mountain range, ranging in difficulty from gentle streams to wild and challenging rapids. Some of Nepal’s most popular rivers for white water rafting and kayaking include the Trishuli, Sun Koshi, and the Karnali River.

And if you’re looking for a more relaxed adventure, you can take a hot air balloon ride over Phewa Lake in Pokhara or go for a jungle safari in Chitwan.

With a cornucopia of activities to choose from, you’re bound to discover something that tickles your curiosity.

6. Understanding the Cultural Diversity

Nepal is a melting pot of cultures, with over 100 ethnic groups and 120 languages coexisting within its borders. Some of Nepal’s largest ethnic groups are the Brahmin-Chhetri, Magars, and Newars.

This diversity is showcased in its architecture, festivals, and customs, and can be seen in the colorful traditional attire worn by its people. Immerse yourself in the local scene by joining in on events that honor each group’s unique history and culture.

Fun Fact:  Not so much cultural, but one very cool class of people is the Gurkhas, a renowned military force from Nepal known for their bravery, loyalty, and skill. They have a long history of serving in the British Army, dating back more than 200 years.

7. Spot Endangered Wildlife

Nepal is home to a diverse range of wildlife, including some of the world’s most endangered animals. You can find snow leopards in the high altitude of the Himalayas and red pandas in the temperate forests, while the jungles are home to the Royal Bengal tiger, Asian elephants, one-horned rhinos, and other large mammals.

On safari in Africa, you might be able to see a rhino from afar. But in Chitwan National Park , rhinos are hanging out right on the side of the road!

Overall, Nepal is a paradise for nature lovers, with a wide variety of rare and unique animals living in its 12 national parks, 1 Wildlife Reserve, 1 Hunting Reserve, 6 Conservation Areas, and 13 Buffer Zones.

8. Visit the Birthplace of Buddha

The birthplace of Lord Buddha, Lumbini, is located in southern Nepal. This sacred place is visited by pilgrims from all over the world, who come to pay their respects at the temple and meditate in the tranquil garden.

Lumbini is also a great place to learn more about Buddhism. You can visit the many Buddhist monasteries and temples in the area, or take a walk through the sacred garden where Lord Buddha was born.

9. Nepalese People are Extremely Hospitable

I’ve explored Nepal twice now, and both times I’ve been amazed by the kindness of its people. Everywhere I went, locals were more than happy to help me out, give advice, and show me around.

I was constantly offered tea, snacks, and even places to stay, (albeit sometimes under sort of sketchy situations). Nepalese hospitality is exceptional. And these adventures are something you won’t find in any guidebook!

Whether you’re trekking in the mountains or exploring a city, you’re bound to meet friendly and welcoming people who are eager to share their culture with you.

Scams to Be Wary Of:

With that being said, and although Nepal is a relatively safe place you should always exercise caution. Here are a few scams to be careful of:

  • The scammer will tell you about a big celebration happening at a temple, and he offers to take you there for free. What he’s not telling you is that the temple is extremely far away, there will be little to nothing actually happening at the event, and it will be very expensive to come back from.
  • Many stores use an affiliate system, where people get a kickback for referring customers. So if somebody starts following you and asking what you need, they may be incentivized to take you to places that charge more than necessary.

10. Shop Traditional Handicrafts

Nepal is home to a wide range of traditional handicrafts that reflect the country’s cultural diversity. These include hand-woven fabrics, intricate wood carvings, and beautiful jewelry. Fill up your luggage with a piece of the country’s culture and support local artisans.

What is Nepal famous for shopping:

  • Singing Bowls
  • Cashmere Textiles
  • Thangka Paintings
  • Hippie Style Clothing
  • Hemp Textiles and Bags
  • Knock-off Trekking Gear
  • Tibetan Prayer Flags

Final Thoughts: What is Nepal Famous For?

Whether you’re interested in adventure sports, cultural experiences, or simply soaking up the beauty of nature, Nepal has it all. Some of the most famous things about Nepal include its mountain ranges, Mount Everest, diverse ethnicities and languages, and vibrant arts and crafts.

However, you may not know many other unique and interesting things about Nepal, such as its colorful festivals, unique cuisine, and rich spiritual traditions. So come explore this amazing country and discover why it is one of the world’s most beloved travel destinations.
