I’d wager those it’s not working for are stoping at the accessory position and not going to the run position. Press the start/stop 2x without your foot on any pedal- the car won’t crank without your foot on the brake. Then press accelerator 3x within 10 seconds then start stop again. It works, I promise!

Thanks for the comment, good tip!

We’ve tried this a million times, different speeds and it isn’t working, any other options?

Hi Michelle, sorry it’s not working for you.

Some other things to consider are that other factors can also play a role. For example, if the headlights are on, it may not work. Also, the emergency brake. Try to think of things like that, that could be affecting it.

Wish I had a better answer for you! Good luck!

Dodge Journey 2017 Oil Reset

2017 dodge journey oil reset

If you own a 2017 Dodge Journey, it’s important to know how to properly reset the oil after an oil change. Resetting the oil not only ensures that your vehicle is running at its best, but also helps extend the life of your engine. In this step-by-step guide, we will show you how to reset the oil in your Dodge Journey.

Step 1: Start by locating the “Vehicle Information Center” (VIC) button on your dashboard. It is usually located to the left of your steering wheel.

Step 2: Once you’ve located the VIC button, press and hold it for approximately five seconds. This will bring up a menu on your dashboard.

Step 3: Using the arrow buttons on your steering wheel, navigate to the “Oil Life” option in the menu.

Step 4: Once you’ve selected the “Oil Life” option, press and hold the “VIC” button again for approximately five seconds. This will reset the oil life percentage to 100%.

Step 5: After resetting the oil life, turn off your engine and wait for a few seconds. Then, turn the ignition back on without starting the engine. This will allow the reset to complete.

Remember, it’s important to reset the oil life in your 2017 Dodge Journey after each oil change to ensure accurate readings. Following these simple steps will help keep your engine running smoothly and efficiently.

What is an Oil Reset?

An oil reset is a process that is performed on a vehicle’s engine control unit (ECU) to clear the oil change reminder message. This message is typically displayed on the vehicle’s dashboard to remind the driver that it is time to change the engine oil.

When you change the engine oil in your 2017 Dodge Journey, it is important to reset the oil change reminder message to ensure that it accurately reflects the new oil’s lifespan. If you don’t reset the message, you may receive unnecessary reminders or, worse, fail to receive a timely reminder when your engine oil needs to be changed.

Why do you need to reset the oil?

The oil change reminder message is based on various factors, such as mileage, driving conditions, and the quality of the engine oil. By resetting the oil change reminder message after an oil change, you are allowing the ECU to recalibrate and accurately track the lifespan of the new oil.

If you fail to reset the oil change reminder message, the ECU will continue to monitor the old oil’s lifespan and may incorrectly calculate the remaining mileage before the next oil change. This can lead to unnecessary reminders or, worse, engine damage due to extended oil change intervals.

How to reset the oil in a 2017 Dodge Journey?

Resetting the oil in a 2017 Dodge Journey involves following a few simple steps. These steps typically include accessing the vehicle’s menu system, locating the oil reset option, and confirming the reset. It is important to consult your vehicle’s owner’s manual for specific instructions tailored to your vehicle’s make and model.

Note: Before resetting the oil, make sure you have completed the oil change and the engine is turned off.

  • Locate the vehicle’s menu system. This is usually accessed through the steering wheel controls or the touchscreen display.
  • Navigate to the “Settings” or “Vehicle Settings” menu.
  • Find the “Oil Life” or “Oil Change Reminder” option. This may be under the “Maintenance” or “Service” section.
  • Select the “Reset” or “Reset Oil Life” option.
  • Confirm the reset by following the on-screen prompts or using the appropriate buttons on the steering wheel.

Once the oil reset is complete, the oil change reminder message should be cleared, and the ECU will begin tracking the lifespan of the new oil based on the appropriate factors.

Why is it Important?

Resetting the oil in your 2017 Dodge Journey is important to ensure the longevity and performance of your vehicle. Regularly changing the oil and resetting the oil light can help prevent engine damage, improve fuel efficiency, and extend the life of your car.

Engine oil plays a crucial role in lubricating the internal components of your car’s engine, reducing friction, and preventing wear and tear. Over time, the oil becomes dirty and loses its ability to effectively lubricate the engine, putting strain on the moving parts. This can lead to increased friction, overheating, and ultimately, engine failure.

Resetting the oil light is also important for accurate maintenance tracking. Most modern vehicles have a built-in maintenance schedule that calculates when it’s time to change the oil based on factors such as mileage and driving conditions. If the oil light is not reset after an oil change, the car’s computer system may not accurately calculate the next oil change interval, leading to missed or delayed oil changes. Regular oil changes are vital to prevent engine damage and keep your car running smoothly.

Additionally, resetting the oil light can help improve fuel efficiency. Dirty or old oil can create extra friction within the engine, causing it to work harder and use more fuel. By regularly changing the oil and resetting the oil light, you can ensure that your vehicle is running at its optimum efficiency, saving you money on fuel in the long run.

Lastly, resetting the oil light is a simple but important step in maintaining the resale value of your vehicle. When potential buyers see a lit oil light or a lack of maintenance records, they may assume that the car hasn’t been well-maintained and may offer a lower price. By regularly resetting the oil light and keeping accurate maintenance records, you can demonstrate that you’ve taken good care of your vehicle and potentially increase its resale value.

Step 1: Prepare Your Materials

Before you begin resetting the oil in your 2017 Dodge Journey, it’s important to gather all the necessary materials. Here’s what you’ll need:

1. Oil Filter

1. Oil Filter

Make sure you have a high-quality oil filter that is compatible with your specific model and year of Dodge Journey. This will ensure optimal performance and protection for your engine.

2. Engine Oil

Purchase the correct type and amount of engine oil for your vehicle. Refer to your owner’s manual or contact a trusted mechanic for guidance on the specific oil requirements for your Dodge Journey.

An oil pan or drain pan will be necessary to catch the old oil as it is drained from the vehicle. Choose a pan that is large enough to hold the amount of oil your Dodge Journey holds.

4. Oil Filter Wrench

An oil filter wrench will be needed to safely and securely remove the old oil filter. Make sure you have the correct size wrench for your specific filter.

A funnel will help you easily pour the new oil into the engine without spilling or making a mess. Look for a funnel with a large enough opening to avoid any spills or splashes.

6. Latex Gloves

Wearing latex gloves will protect your hands from any oil spills or contaminants. It’s important to keep your hands clean and protected throughout the oil resetting process.

By gathering these materials before you begin, you’ll have everything you need to complete the oil resetting process efficiently and safely.

Gather the Necessary Tools

Before resetting the oil in your 2017 Dodge Journey, it’s important to gather all the necessary tools. Having everything you need on hand will make the process much smoother and prevent any delays or complications. Here are the tools you’ll need:

  • Oil filter wrench
  • Ratchet wrench set
  • Replacement oil
  • Shop towels

Make sure all of these tools are readily available before you begin the oil reset procedure. Having everything prepared beforehand will save you time and ensure that the reset process goes smoothly.

Choose the Right Oil

Choosing the right oil for your 2017 Dodge Journey is essential to keep your engine running smoothly. Using the wrong oil can lead to decreased performance and potential engine damage. Here are a few factors to consider when selecting the right oil:

Viscosity Grade

Viscosity Grade

One of the most important factors to consider is the viscosity grade. This refers to the thickness or flowability of the oil. The correct viscosity grade for the 2017 Dodge Journey is typically mentioned in the owner’s manual. It is usually expressed as a combination of letters and numbers, such as 5W-30 or 10W-40. The viscosity grade determines how well the oil will flow at different temperatures.

API Certification

When choosing oil, it is important to look for the American Petroleum Institute (API) certification label. This label indicates that the oil has met certain quality and performance standards set by the API. The most common certification for gasoline engines is “API SN,” while diesel engines typically require “API CJ-4.” Make sure to check your vehicle’s owner’s manual for the recommended API certification.

Additionally, some automakers may require oils that are specifically approved or recommended by them. It’s important to check the specifications mentioned in the owner’s manual to ensure compliance.

There are a variety of oil types available, such as conventional, synthetic blend, and full synthetic oil. Conventional oil is the traditional option, while synthetic oils offer better performance and protection. Synthetic blend oils combine the benefits of both conventional and synthetic oils. Consider your driving habits, climate, and the manufacturer’s recommendations when selecting the right oil type for your Dodge Journey.

Ultimately, it is crucial to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations and guidelines when choosing the right oil for your 2017 Dodge Journey. Regularly changing the oil at the recommended intervals is also important to ensure optimal engine performance and longevity.

Step 2: Locate the Oil Reset Button

Once the oil change is complete, you will need to reset the oil life indicator on your 2017 Dodge Journey. To do this, you will first need to locate the oil reset button in your vehicle.

The oil reset button is usually located near the dashboard or steering wheel. It may be labeled with a wrench or oil can symbol. Take a moment to familiarize yourself with the buttons and controls in your vehicle to ensure you can easily locate the oil reset button.

If you are having trouble finding the oil reset button, consult your vehicle’s owner’s manual for specific instructions. The manual will provide detailed diagrams and information on the location of the oil reset button for your specific model of the 2017 Dodge Journey.

Common Locations for the Oil Reset Button in a 2017 Dodge Journey:

1. Dashboard: Look for the oil reset button near the speedometer or other dashboard controls.

2. Steering Wheel: Check around the steering wheel for the oil reset button. It may be located on the steering column or on the steering wheel itself.

Remember, it is important to locate the oil reset button before attempting to reset the oil life indicator. This will ensure that you can easily complete the process and avoid any confusion or frustration.

Where to Find it in a 2017 Dodge Journey

When it comes to resetting the oil in a 2017 Dodge Journey, it’s important to know where to find the necessary components. By locating the key parts, you can easily and efficiently complete the task. Here are the key places to look:

The oil filter in a 2017 Dodge Journey is typically located on the bottom of the engine, right next to the oil pan. It is a cylindrical component that filters out impurities from the oil as it circulates through the engine.

2. Oil Drain Plug

The oil drain plug is usually located on the bottom of the oil pan. It is a small metal plug that needs to be removed in order to drain the old oil from the engine. Make sure to have a drain pan ready to catch the oil when you remove the plug.

3. Oil Dipstick

The oil dipstick is used to check the oil level in the engine. It is typically located near the front of the engine and has a yellow or orange handle. To check the oil level, simply pull out the dipstick, wipe it clean, reinsert it, and then pull it out again to see where the oil level is.

By knowing where to find these key components, you can easily reset the oil in your 2017 Dodge Journey and keep your engine running smoothly. Remember to always consult your vehicle’s manual for specific instructions and safety precautions before attempting any maintenance or repair tasks.

Step 3: Turn on the Ignition

After you have securely tightened the oil cap and replaced the dipstick, it’s time to turn on the ignition. Insert your key into the ignition switch and turn it clockwise until the dashboard lights up. Make sure all the warning lights on the dashboard are functioning properly.

Allow the engine to run for about 30 seconds to a minute, to circulate the new oil and ensure proper lubrication. Listen for any unusual noises or vibrations during this time.

If everything seems to be running smoothly, you can proceed to the next step in resetting the oil in your 2017 Dodge Journey.

Insert the Key and Start the Engine

Before you begin the process of resetting the oil change indicator in your 2017 Dodge Journey, you will need to insert the key into the ignition and start the engine.

To do this, follow these steps:

  • Locate the ignition slot on the dashboard of your Dodge Journey.
  • Take the key and insert it into the ignition slot.
  • Turn the key clockwise until you hear the engine starting.

Once the engine is running, make sure to let it idle for a few minutes to allow the oil to circulate throughout the engine and reach optimal operating temperature.

Starting the engine is an important step in the oil resetting process, as it allows the vehicle’s computer system to recognize that the engine is running and ready for the next steps.

After the engine has idled for a few minutes, you can proceed to the next steps in the oil resetting process.

Step 4: Access the Oil Reset Menu

Once you are ready to reset the oil on your 2017 Dodge Journey, it’s time to access the oil reset menu. Follow these steps:

It’s important to note that the specific steps may vary slightly depending on the model and trim level of your Dodge Journey. Always consult your vehicle’s owner’s manual for the most accurate and up-to-date instructions.

Follow the Instructions on the Dashboard

Resetting the oil in a 2017 Dodge Journey is a relatively simple process that can be done by following the instructions that are displayed on the dashboard. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to do it:

  • Start by turning the ignition to the “On” position. Make sure that the engine is not running.
  • Locate the “Menu” button on the dashboard and press it. This will bring up a menu on the vehicle’s display screen.
  • Scroll through the menu options using the up and down arrows on the dashboard until you find the “Settings” option. Press the “OK” button to enter the settings menu.
  • In the settings menu, you should see an option for “Oil Life”. Select this option by pressing the “OK” button.
  • Once you have selected the “Oil Life” option, you will be presented with a prompt asking if you want to reset the oil life. Confirm that you want to reset the oil life by pressing the “OK” button.

After following these steps, the oil life will be reset in your 2017 Dodge Journey. It is important to note that performing an oil change is still necessary even after resetting the oil life. Resetting the oil life does not replace the need for regular maintenance.

Step 5: Reset the Oil

Once you have completed the oil change and replaced the oil filter, it is important to reset the oil change reminder on your 2017 Dodge Journey. This will ensure that the oil change indicator light does not continue to display after the oil has been changed.

Step 1: Enter the Vehicle

To reset the oil change reminder, first enter the vehicle and make sure all doors are closed. If the engine is currently running, turn it off.

Step 2: Press the “Start” Button

Next, press the “Start” button on your Dodge Journey without starting the engine. This will activate the vehicle’s power mode.

Note: If your vehicle does not have a push-button start system, use the key to turn the ignition to the “On” position without starting the engine.

Step 3: Fully Depress the Accelerator Pedal

With the power mode activated, fully depress the accelerator pedal to the floor and release it three times within a 10-second period. Make sure to perform this action fairly quickly.

Step 4: Turn the Ignition Off

After releasing the accelerator pedal for the third time, turn the ignition off. This will complete the reset process.

Once you have followed these steps, the oil change reminder should be reset on your 2017 Dodge Journey. You can now start the engine and confirm that the reminder light is no longer illuminated on the dashboard.

Confirm the Oil Reset and Exit the Menu

After completing the oil reset process on your 2017 Dodge Journey, you’ll need to confirm the reset and exit the vehicle’s menu system.

To confirm the oil reset, navigate back to the “Oil Life” or “Maintenance” section in the menu. Here, you should see the new oil life percentage displayed, showing that the reset was successful.

Once you’ve confirmed the reset, it’s important to exit the menu system to avoid accidentally making any unintended changes to other vehicle settings. Look for an “Exit” or “Back” option in the menu and select it to return to the main display or navigation screen.

If you encounter any difficulties or have questions about the oil reset process, consult your vehicle’s owner’s manual or contact a local Dodge dealership for further assistance. Understanding The Oil Change Indicator System

To reset the oil light on a Dodge Journey, start the vehicle, turn it off, and repeat the process three times. This simple procedure will clear the oil change indicator system and ensure you stay on top of your vehicle’s maintenance needs without any hassle.

The Oil Change Indicator System in a Dodge Journey is an important feature that helps you keep track of when your vehicle needs an oil change. This system uses various sensors and algorithms to determine the condition of your oil and calculate when it needs to be changed.

Here’s how it works:

  • The system constantly monitors factors such as engine speed, temperature, and driving conditions to assess the oil’s quality.
  • It takes into account factors like mileage and time since the last oil change to determine when the oil is due for a change.
  • When it’s time for an oil change, the system will display a warning message on the dashboard, typically saying “Oil Change Required” or displaying an oil can icon.
  • Some newer Dodge Journey models may also provide a specific oil change percentage or countdown indicator.

How Does The Oil Change Indicator System Work?

The Oil Change Indicator System works by analyzing data from various sensors and algorithms to determine the condition of the oil, including factors like mileage, time since the last oil change, and engine performance. Here’s a breakdown of the process:

  • The system uses sensors to monitor engine speed, temperature, and driving conditions, which helps assess the quality and condition of the oil.

  • The data is processed by the system’s algorithm, which determines when the oil has reached a point where it needs to be changed.
  • Once the system determines that the oil change is due, it will display a warning message or indicator on the dashboard to notify the driver.

Importance Of Servicing The Oil Change Reminder

Servicing the oil change reminder in your Dodge Journey is crucial to ensure the longevity and performance of your vehicle’s engine. Here’s why it’s important:

You all missed 2 major steps. For push starts, you press TWICE without pressing brake pedal. The car’s run light should be on. You press the acceleration down 3 times as stated. And THEN, while car is still on the run light, you press the Brake and then it should leave.

I followed the steps as shown on my 2018 Journey and it worked perfectly.

I followed these states and it worked perfectly.

For PUSH-BUTTON start models (mine is 2014) ……follow Camille’s correction above.

Thanks Camille for the correction.

About Dodge Journey

The Dodge Journey is a mid-size crossover SUV manufactured and marketed by FCA’s Dodge brand since model year 2009, with a facelift for the 2011 model year. With styling by Ryan Nagode, the Journey is marketed globally in both left and right hand drive. In many markets, the SUV was marketed as the Fiat Freemont. (source:wiki)

The 2011 reworking brought a much nicer interior and a better V6, but the lack of agility and still-mediocre fuel economy keep it out of the top ranks. Plus it was more expensive than many better rivals.

Dodge is one of the leading car brands in the world that produces the coolest cars. One of the many cars produced by the company in the United States is the Dodge Journey. Today I want to share how to reset the oil change due to the warning light on the Dodge Journey.

I just finished an oil change, so now we are going to reset that oil system. But before I do that, I also like to crank the vehicle to feel up the oil filter, and when I first start the car after an oil change, I don’t want the oil filter to be dry. So let’s go ahead and get started.

Time needed:  3 minutes

In this section, I will show you how to reset the oil life indicator on my 2017 Dodge Journey. So if it’s time to get your oil changed and you’ve changed it, you still have that oil life indicator on. Then what you’re going to do is:

With your foot not on the brake pedal, you’re going to press the START button twice to take it to the run position

And then you need to press the accelerator pedal three times slowly within 10 seconds

So that’s how you do it. For your info, this operation work for all models of the Dodge Journey (2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 model years).

The Oil Change Due Light on your Dodge Journey indicates that the vehicle needs an oil change. You can temporarily clear this light by pressing the “Up” arrow button. If you own a push-button model, you must press the Engine Start/Stop button without holding the brake pedal. Then, follow the directions on your vehicle’s owner’s manual to schedule an oil change. After completing the recommended oil change, your vehicle will be ready to drive again.

You should know the service intervals for the 2020 Dodge Journey before you drive it. Routine maintenance is essential for the vehicle’s performance and can help you avoid common issues. Check your owner’s manual for details about the recommended service intervals for your 2020 Dodge Journey. After 10,000 miles, you should bring your vehicle to a mechanic to change the oil and filter. Your mechanic will also check other components, such as the air filters and spark plugs, as well as the cooling and transmission fluids.

The oil in your 2018 Dodge Journey carries a certain level of essential lubrication, so you must check it often. Most experts recommend changing your oil at least every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. It’s also best to change it with synthetic oil since it protects the engine against wear and tear better than conventional oil. In addition, synthetic oil requires fewer oil changes.

The 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine is the standard in SE and Crossroad trim levels, and a 3.6-liter V6 engine is available for GT models. Both engines are efficient, putting out about 25 miles per gallon. They can also tow around 1,000 pounds and haul as much as 2,500 pounds. Depending on your needs, either engine can be the right fit for your Dodge Journey.

If you’ve wondered how often you should replace your brake pads, you’ve come to the right place. Your 2015 Dodge Journey’s maintenance schedule lists the recommended intervals for replacing brake pads. The brake pads on your car’s front and rear axle wear down at about the same rate, while the pads on your rear axle wear down faster. You can schedule this service online and avoid the hassle of making a trip to the dealership.

If you’ve ever been stranded with a dead battery, you know how difficult it can be. In addition to the inconvenience, a dead battery will also affect your vehicle’s power. Whether driving down the road or commuting, changing the battery at the appropriate interval is crucial. So you should always check your Dodge Journey’s battery change interval.

SAE 5W-20 engine oil is required for the 2019 Dodge Journey. When it’s time to replace your oil, Dodge advises using 100% synthetic oil.

The 2.4L four-cylinder engine in the 2018 Dodge Journey requires 4.5 quarts of oil, while the 3.6L V6 requires 5.9 quarts.

Mopar Power Steering Fluid+4 is recommended for use in the 2020 Dodge Journey, although you may use Mopar ATF+4 Automatic Transmission Fluid in its place if that isn’t readily available.

So anyhow, I hope this tip can help somebody here. To do your oil change and reset oil life, but also don’t start your vehicle with an empty oil filter, sometimes the position of the oil filter is kind of weird. So you cannot add oil to it because when you try to install it, it’s going to leak a bunch of oil, so this is one way you can fill up your oil filter without any mess. So thanks for reading; leave your comments below, and I will see you on the next content. God bless!

Dodge Journey low oil pressure light is on – causes and how to reset

The low oil pressure warning light is one of the most important indicators on the dashboard of your Dodge Journey. It warns you when your engine is not receiving enough oil pressure, which can cause serious damage to your vehicle’s engine if left unaddressed. In this article, we’ll explore potential causes and provide tips on how to fix them so that you can keep your Journey running smoothly and avoid costly repairs.

Dodge Journey

1. Low oil level

2017 dodge journey oil reset

When the oil level is low, the oil pump may not be able to generate enough pressure to properly lubricate the engine components, leading to decreased oil pressure and potentially causing engine damage. In this situation, the low oil pressure warning light will turn on to alert the driver to the issue.

Check oil level

If the low oil pressure warning light turns on, it is important to stop the vehicle as soon as it is safe to do so and check the oil level. If the oil level is low in your Journey, you should add oil immediately to prevent potential engine damage.

2. Wrong oil viscosity

2017 dodge journey oil reset

Oil is too thick, or too thin

Using oil with a viscosity that is too thick can cause issues with oil flow and lubrication, leading to increased engine wear and decreased fuel efficiency. On the other hand, using oil with a viscosity that is too thin can lead to decreased engine protection, decreased fuel efficiency, and increased oil consumption.

Verify the oil viscosity for your engine

To prevent issues with the wrong oil viscosity, it is important to refer to the owner’s manual or consult with a qualified mechanic to determine the correct oil viscosity for your vehicle. When changing the oil, be sure to use oil with the correct viscosity rating and type recommended by the manufacturer.

If you suspect that the wrong oil viscosity has been used in your vehicle, it is important to have it inspected by a qualified mechanic.

3. Oil pressure sensor malfunction

A bad oil pressure sensor can cause the low oil pressure warning light to turn on in your Journey. The oil pressure sensor is responsible for monitoring the oil pressure and sending a signal to the vehicle’s computer, which in turn illuminates the warning light on the dashboard if the oil pressure drops below a certain level.

2017 dodge journey oil reset

If the oil pressure sensor is malfunctioning, it may send a false signal to the vehicle’s computer, causing the low oil pressure warning light to turn on even if the oil pressure is actually within a safe range. Alternatively, a faulty sensor may not send a signal at all, causing the warning light to remain off even if the oil pressure is dangerously low.

How to check a faulty oil pressure sensor

If the oil pressure sensor is malfunctioning, it may trigger an OBD fault code in your vehicle’s engine control module (ECM). This fault code can be read using a diagnostic scanner or code reader, and will provide information about the specific nature of the issue with the oil pressure sensor.

Some common fault codes that may be associated with a faulty oil pressure sensor include:

  • P0520: Engine Oil Pressure Sensor/Switch Circuit Malfunction
  • P0521: Engine Oil Pressure Sensor/Switch Circuit Range/Performance
  • P0522: Engine Oil Pressure Sensor/Switch Circuit Low Voltage
  • P0523: Engine Oil Pressure Sensor/Switch Circuit High Voltage

If you receive an OBD fault code related to the oil pressure sensor, it is important to have the issue diagnosed and repaired as soon as possible. A faulty sensor can lead to inaccurate readings and potential engine damage if the oil pressure drops too low.

4. Faulty oil pump

A faulty oil pump can also cause the low oil pressure warning light to turn on in your Dodge Journey. The oil pump is responsible for circulating the engine oil throughout the engine, providing lubrication and cooling to the various components.

If the oil pump is not functioning properly, it may not be able to generate enough pressure to properly circulate the oil through the engine. This can result in decreased oil pressure, which can cause the low oil pressure warning light to turn on.

Some signs of a faulty oil pump include engine noise, decreased oil pressure, and oil pressure fluctuations.

Ignoring a faulty oil pump can lead to potential engine damage if the engine is not receiving adequate lubrication and cooling. It is important to address any issues with the oil pump as soon as possible to prevent further damage to the engine.

5. Oil pressure relief valve stuck open

If the oil pressure relief valve is stuck open in the engine of your Dodge Journey, it can cause the low oil pressure warning light to turn on. The oil pressure relief valve is designed to regulate the oil pressure in the engine by opening and closing as needed to maintain the appropriate level of pressure.

Oil flows too freely

If the valve becomes stuck open, it can allow the oil to flow too freely through the system, which can result in a decrease in oil pressure. This decrease in oil pressure can cause the low oil pressure warning light to turn on.

6. Clogged oil pickup screen

A clogged oil pickup screen is another possible cause of the low oil pressure warning light turning on in your Journey. The oil pickup screen is located at the bottom of the oil pan and is responsible for filtering out any debris or contaminants that may be present in the oil.

2017 dodge journey oil reset

Over time, the oil pickup screen can become clogged with debris, which can restrict the flow of oil through the engine. This restriction can cause a decrease in oil pressure, which can trigger the low oil pressure warning light to turn on.

7. Oil pickup tube cracked, sucking air

If the oil pickup tube in your engine is cracked, it can cause the low oil pressure warning light to turn on in Journey. The oil pickup tube is responsible for drawing oil from the oil pan and sending it through the engine for lubrication and cooling.

If the pickup tube is cracked, it can allow air to enter the oil system, which can disrupt the flow of oil and cause a decrease in oil pressure. This decrease in oil pressure can trigger the low oil pressure warning light to turn on.

8. Clogged oil filter, and failed bypass value

A clogged oil filter and a failed bypass valve are two possible causes of the low oil pressure warning light turning on in your Dodge Journey.

2017 dodge journey oil reset

The oil filter is responsible for removing contaminants from the engine oil, and over time it can become clogged with debris. If the filter becomes too clogged, it can restrict the flow of oil through the engine, causing a decrease in oil pressure and triggering the low oil pressure warning light to turn on.

The bypass valve is designed to allow oil to bypass the oil filter if the filter becomes clogged. If the bypass valve fails to function properly, it can prevent oil from bypassing the filter and result in a decrease in oil pressure.

9. Oil not changed on time

Oil that has not been changed on time or is too old can also contribute to low oil pressure in your Journey. Over time, engine oil breaks down and becomes less effective at lubricating the engine and removing contaminants. As a result, the oil pressure can drop and cause the low oil pressure warning light to turn on.

2017 dodge journey oil reset

May need to flush the engine

If the oil in your Journey is too old or has not been changed on time, it’s important to have it changed as soon as possible. An oil change will replace the old oil with fresh oil and help restore proper oil pressure. In some cases, it may also be necessary to flush the engine to remove any built-up contaminants that can contribute to low oil pressure.

Always change engine oil on time

Regular oil changes can help prevent low oil pressure issues in your Journey and prolong the life of the engine. It’s important to consult the owner’s manual for specific oil change intervals and follow the manufacturer’s recommendations to ensure proper engine lubrication and prevent costly repairs.

Use an OBD Scanner for diagnosis

Using an OBD (On-Board Diagnostics) scanner is a great way to diagnose low oil pressure issues in your Dodge Journey. An OBD scanner can connect to your vehicle’s OBD-II port and retrieve diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) that can help pinpoint the cause of the low oil pressure warning light.

2017 dodge journey oil reset

When the low oil pressure warning light turns on, the OBD scanner can be used to retrieve the specific DTC associated with the issue.

Once the DTC has been retrieved, the OBD scanner can also be used to monitor live engine data such as oil pressure, engine RPM, and engine temperature. This data can help identify issues such as a failed oil pressure sensor or a clogged oil pickup screen.

While an OBD scanner can be a useful tool for diagnosing low oil pressure issues in your Journey, it’s important to note that it may not be able to diagnose all possible causes of low oil pressure. In some cases, a visual inspection of the engine or additional diagnostic tests may be necessary to identify the root cause of the issue.

If you’re not comfortable using an OBD scanner or don’t have access to one, it’s important to have your Journey inspected by a qualified mechanic who can diagnose and repair low oil pressure issues to prevent further damage to the engine.

How to reset the warning light

You can reset the warning light in Journey by clearing the relevant fault codes with an OBD scanner.

2017 dodge journey oil reset

However, it’s important to address the underlying cause of the issue before attempting to reset the light. Simply resetting the light with an OBD scanner by clearing the code will not fix the problem and the light will likely come back on once the system detects the fault again.

The low oil pressure warning light is designed to alert the driver of a potentially serious issue with the engine’s oil pressure. Ignoring the warning and attempting to reset the light without addressing the underlying cause can lead to further damage to the engine and result in costly repairs.

If you’re unsure of the cause of the low oil pressure, it’s best to have your Journey diagnosed by a qualified mechanic. They can use an OBD scanner to read any fault codes stored in the system and perform additional tests to identify the root cause of the issue. Once the underlying cause has been fixed, the mechanic can reset the warning light and ensure that the engine is running properly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can i continue driving my journey with low oil pressure light on.

If the low oil pressure warning light turns on in your Dodge Journey while you are driving, it is important to take immediate action to avoid potential engine damage. The first step is to safely stop the vehicle as soon as possible, while being mindful of traffic and other road hazards. Once you have come to a safe stop, you should turn off the engine.

It is important to note that driving with low oil pressure can cause serious damage to your engine, as the oil serves as a lubricant to prevent friction and wear between moving parts. If the engine is run without enough oil pressure, it can lead to increased heat and friction, which can cause damage or even complete engine failure.

How long can an engine run with low oil pressure?

It’s difficult to say exactly how long an engine can run with low oil pressure, as it depends on several factors such as the severity of the issue and how quickly the problem is addressed. In general, it’s not recommended to run an engine with low oil pressure for any longer than necessary, as it can lead to significant engine damage or even complete engine failure.

Can I just add oil to my car?

If your vehicle’s low oil pressure warning light has turned on, adding oil to the engine may help increase the oil pressure and prevent further damage, but only if the cause is due to low oil level.

Before adding oil, make sure to check the owner’s manual to determine the correct type and amount of oil needed for your vehicle. It’s also important to check the oil level and ensure that it is not above the maximum level.

Adding too much oil can cause foaming and reduce the oil’s ability to lubricate the engine properly, which can cause further damage. It’s best to add oil in small increments, checking the oil level frequently to ensure that the oil level is within the recommended range.

Will a bad oil pump throw a code?

A bad oil pump can cause low oil pressure and trigger the low oil pressure warning light, but it may not always throw a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) on the OBD system.

The reason for this is that the oil pressure sensor detects the low oil pressure and sends a signal to the engine control module (ECM) which then illuminates the low oil pressure warning light. However, if the oil pressure sensor is working properly, the ECM may not register a fault code related to the oil pump.

That being said, if the oil pump is failing and causing low oil pressure, it may trigger other DTCs related to engine performance or oil pressure. For example, if the oil pressure is low and causing engine misfires, it may trigger a DTC related to misfires. Similarly, if the low oil pressure is causing other engine components to fail, such as the variable valve timing system, it may trigger a DTC related to that system.

Can low oil pressure cause an engine to misfire?

Yes, low oil pressure can cause misfires in an engine. Misfires occur when one or more cylinders in the engine fail to ignite properly, which can cause a variety of symptoms such as a rough idle, decreased power, and increased emissions.

Low oil pressure can cause misfires in several ways. First, low oil pressure can lead to insufficient lubrication of critical engine components, such as the valve train and bearings. Without proper lubrication, these components can wear and fail, leading to engine misfires.

Secondly, low oil pressure can cause variable valve timing (VVT) systems to malfunction, which can also cause misfires. Many modern engines use VVT systems to optimize engine performance and fuel efficiency. These systems rely on oil pressure to operate properly, and if oil pressure is too low, they may not function as intended.

Will the check engine light come on if oil pressure is low?

In some cases, a low oil pressure condition may trigger the check engine light to come on. The check engine light is designed to come on when the engine control module (ECM) detects a fault with one of the vehicle’s systems or components. If low oil pressure is detected as a fault, the ECM may illuminate the check engine light and store a code in its memory for retrieval with a diagnostic scanner.

Scheduled Maintenance for Your 2017 Dodge Journey

What is the recommended maintenance schedule for the 2017 Dodge Journey?

What to Know About 2017 Dodge Journey Scheduled Maintenance

Take care of your Dodge Journey and it'll take care of you. If you put in the effort to keep up with proper maintenance , your Journey could be on the road well past the 200,000 mile mark. So, you want to care for your car, but you’re not sure when to get certain services. It can be overwhelming, but fortunately, there’s a resource that takes the guesswork out of routine Journey maintenance. Rely on the recommended maintenance schedule that’s been created just for your 2017 Dodge Journey!

Dodge knows your vehicle inside and out (they made it, after all!), so they’ve designed this schedule with your car’s unique needs in mind. Driving conditions, climate variations, and other variables can affect which scheduled maintenance services you’ll need; however, recommended maintenance usually includes services like fluid exchanges, filter changes, new brake pads, oil changes, and tire rotations. Staying on track with routine service appointments can help your Journey perform better, increase your vehicle safety, and prevent common 2017 Dodge Journey problems.

Essential Maintenance to Keep Your Dodge Journey Running Newer, Longer

Come to Firestone Complete Auto Care for manufacturer-recommended routine maintenance on your 2017 Dodge Journey and a skilled technician will start the appointment with a Courtesy Check. A Courtesy Check helps "set the stage" for your service and catch any small problems before they turn into big repairs. Every Courtesy Check will include a visual inspection of your Journey. We’ll check your head and tail lights, fluid levels, filters, tires (and their alignment!), and windshield wiper blades. We’ll also perform a free battery check to determine your battery’s charge level.

Maybe it's time to find a new auto battery for your 2017 Dodge Journey. If your current battery is more than three years old, it may be time for a replacement (batteries typically last somewhere between three and five years). Depending on the climate where you live and your habits while driving, your Journey may need a replacement battery sooner. Short trips and extreme temperatures can shorten the overall life expectancy of your Dodge Journey battery. Sure, you could wait until your battery is completely dead, but it’s a much wiser decision to replace it before you need to. If you keep driving on a battery that can't hold a charge, you run the risk of being stranded when your battery finally gives out (and no one can predict where that might be!). Your Dodge Journey won’t even be able to start with a weak battery, much less get you where you need to go.

Staying on schedule for battery replacements and motor oil changes can support your engine’s overall performance and keep your 2017 Dodge Journey running newer, longer. To learn how often Dodge recommends you have the oil changed in your 2017 Journey, check out the information table at the beginning of this page. Don’t forget, though, that weather conditions in your area or your personal driving habits can affect this interval. Talk to a Firestone Complete Auto Care technician to know when to change your oil. We'll also help you understand what type of oil to use for your 2017 Dodge Journey.

Periodic service to the steering system in your Dodge Journey can not only ensure a smooth ride; it can also help you maintain control of your car in compromised road conditions. Don’t let a misalignment or pulling steering wheel put you in danger. You can count on Firestone Complete Auto Care’s trained technicians to inspect this system and, if needed, provide Dodge Journey steering and suspension services including wheel alignment, strut replacement, power steering fluid changes, ball joint lubrication, and wheel bearing replacement. Prevent damage or premature wear and tear on your Dodge Journey's steering system with regular maintenance.

If you skip recommended Dodge Journey services, you might find yourself with a hot mess on your hands – quite literally. A damaged A/C system is never fun, and an overheated engine can cause significant issues (like a total car breakdown!). We can help you with all those issues. Our technicians have the knowledge and tools to repair and maintain the heating and cooling systems for your Dodge Journey’s engine, and we can service your A/C system, too. Is your Dodge Journey radiator in need of replacement? We got it. A/C smelling musty? We'll fix it. Firestone Complete Auto Care is the place to go for 2017 Dodge Journey maintenance.

Don’t wait until something goes wrong with your car. Visit your nearest location for proactive maintenance today.

2017 Dodge Journey Maintenance Questions

Take an active role in maintaining your 2017 Dodge Journey. Get answers to common Dodge Journey maintenance questions and learn more about caring for your vehicle.

  • When should I have Dodge Journey alignment checked? Watch out for pothole damage. If your 2017 Journey is pulling to one side or the other, your tires or suspension system could be calling out for help.
  • When should I use high mileage oil in my Dodge Journey? If your Dodge Journey has ticked past 75,000 miles, consider switching to high mileage oil at your next oil change to give your engine what it needs to go another 75,000 (or more!). High mileage oil: make it a high priority!
  • Can Dodge dashboard warning lights wait? Don't ignore dashboard warning lights! Bring your Dodge Journey in for a diagnostic code scan as soon as a dashboard warning light flashes on, whether it's your check engine or battery light. Dashboard lights alert you to trouble under the hood.
