I seriously don’t know how I used to manage traveling alone without the help of my smartphone.

Nowadays going alone is SO MUCH easier with the help of travel apps!

As a woman who considers herself the queen of solo travel , planning the P-E-R-F-E-C-T solo trip is only half the battle.

Being well-prepared is a major factor in enjoying your trip. The right travel apps can significantly reduce the stress and anxiety of planning and experiencing your adventure!

I have tried and tested every app on this list! And the best part is most on the list is FREE and works with Android and iPhone 📲. Happy traveling ✈️!

My Most Essential Travel App for Solo Females

Traveling alone as a woman is exciting, and the right apps can make it even better.

📲 Pro Tip: I like to create a folder for all my travel apps so that I can easily find them amongst all the chaos on my phone.

It can get a little boring on a long solo travel journey. This is why Nomad Her is such a cool app!

You can connect with other solo travelers that are traveling near you.

What I like most is you have to get verified using your official ID, so you can feel safe that you are talking to who they say they are!

• Tourlina – If you want an alternative, check out Tourlina, a women-only app connecting female travelers. It matches users based on their travel dates, destinations , and interests, facilitating connections with like-minded women who have similar travel plans. This app is perfect for finding travel companions, sharing tips, and ensuring safety by traveling together.

Travel Ladies App

This is also a free app! You need to verify yourself, but they don’t ask for an ID.

On the Travel Ladies App you can join groups and offer to help out women traveling to the area you live in as well as make friends to meet up.

Since they are both free I think you should download both!

You never know which app your future travel bestie could be on ; )

Google Maps

My #1 most must-have app is no surprise to anyone, and that is Google Maps.

Google Maps has some great features to save desired destinations into your wish list. I always do this ahead of time when traveling.

Don’t forget to download the offline maps for the cities you are visiting. I have often found myself without a great data connection and the offline map was helpful.

If you are visiting any of the cities in my destination guides, I often offer pre-pinned maps of places I love. These maps will download directly into your phone! iphone or Android

Additional Navigation Apps to Consider:

Mayday safety.

Solo traveling as a female can be perfectly safe ! In fact, I have often felt more comfortable in a foreign city than I did my own.

Researching your destination is an absolute must. Know where to stay, where to avoid, and how to navigate yourself before you go.

For an extra added security measure, get the May Day app. May Day allows you to automatically send an alert to those you elect as to your whereabouts.

Additional Safety Apps to Consider:

• Noonlight (Formerly SafeTrek) – This app offers a simple yet effective safety feature: press and hold the button when you feel unsafe, and release it if danger arises, entering your pin if you’re safe. If not, Noonlight will notify the authorities with your location and emergency information. It’s great for moments when you’re feeling uneasy and need a safety net.
• bSafe – This app includes a variety of safety features, such as voice activation to send alerts, live location sharing, and a video recording function that automatically starts when an SOS is activated. It can also simulate phone calls to help get you out of uncomfortable situations and alert your chosen contacts when you need help.
• SOS Stay Safe – This innovative app uses the power button on your phone to send out alerts. By pressing the power button a predetermined number of times, it sends a text message with your location, along with a recording of the ambient sound at the time. It’s designed to be discreet, allowing you to signal for help without drawing attention.

Continuing on the safety theme, this next must-have travel app for solo females is GeoSure.

Get a more in-depth look at a city’s neighborhoods here. Just remember that the city rating is not ever going to be 100.

My own city in which I feel very safe only received a score of 62. I urge you to compare your own city with your destination city and you will see they might be similar in ratings. iPhone or Android

• TravelSafe – Offering a comprehensive database of emergency services contact numbers for nearly every country, TravelSafe is an invaluable resource for travelers. Beyond emergency contacts, it also provides practical safety tips and information to help you stay safe while exploring new places. Its user-friendly interface makes it easy to access vital information in a pinch.

Sygic Travel Planning App

A cool app that helps you plan your next adventure is Sygic Travel Maps!

What I think is the most valuable is that the app has hidden gems, and the best dining and shopping, all recommended by travel experts and fellow explorers.

You can create personalized itineraries, download offline maps, and sync with the web for seamless planning.

Additional Travel Planning Apps to Consider:

• TripIt – TripIt stands out for its ability to automatically create detailed itineraries based on confirmation emails you forward to it. From flight tickets to hotel bookings and car rentals, TripIt organizes everything in one place and offers a clear, accessible itinerary. It’s particularly beneficial for those who want a hassle-free way to keep track of complex travel plans.
• Rome2rio – Specializing in transportation logistics, Rome2rio shows you how to get from point A to point B in the easiest way possible, covering planes, trains, buses, ferries, and driving routes. This app has us covered in our moment of need. Download this free app and find all the nearby toilets.

Flush will also tell you whether you need to pay for this toilet as well if it is handicap accessible. Brilliant!

Additional Facility Finder Apps:

• SitOrSquat: Restroom Finder – This restroom locator app, sponsored by Charmin, allows users to find public restrooms near their location and provides information on the condition of the facilities. Users can rate restrooms as “Sit” (good) or “Squat” (not so good) and add new locations to the database. It’s a user-friendly app with a significant database of restrooms across cities worldwide, making it easier for travelers and locals alike to find clean public toilets.
• Toilet Finder – Toilet Finder is another app that helps you locate over 150,000 public restrooms around the world. Learning new languages is so hard, and I should know.

Currently, I have been learning German, and let me tell you it is not easy.

When traveling alone , you might find a need to communicate with someone who doesn’t speak your native language.

For this reason, be prepared and have Google Translate downloaded on your phone. iPhone or Android

• Microsoft Translator – A comprehensive translation tool that supports text, voice, conversations, and image translations across multiple devices. It offers real-time translation in over 60 languages, including offline features for select languages. XE Currency

Some of these must-have travel apps for solo females are for everyone. I have a couple of cringe-worthy stories for you about my mishaps with currency exchange.

They say Thailand is cheap, right? Yeah, that is what I thought too! So why do I need to check the currency exchange for a hat?!

I honestly thought it couldn’t be more than $20. Well, I was in Phuket and didn’t realize it was the exception in Thailand where things are marked up like they are at Disney World.

So seventy dollars later on this hat… I considered wearing it around the house to get my money’s worth… Don’t be like me. Get this free app. Iphone or Android

This might be the most helpful app on the market, and it’s FREE!

Why do you need this app?? Oh, have you ever been like, forget that important something or other, going to have to buy it.

I consider myself a pro-traveler, and honestly, if I don’t use a checklist, I always forget something.

This app is very smart and takes all your activities and environment into account when generating. iPhone and Android

Additional Packing Apps to Consider:

• Packr – Packr generates a personalized packing list for your trip based on the destination, weather, and activities planned. You can add specific activities like hiking, swimming, or business meetings, and Packr will adjust your packing list accordingly. It also provides functionality for family or group trips by allowing you to create different profiles and lists for each traveler. Packr’s interface is intuitive, making it easy to check off items as you pack them.

Time Shifter

Looking to avoid jet lag? There is an app for that! Time Shifter is a pretty cool and intuitive app that takes your personal data to create a plan for you.

This app will suggest when you should power thru or power nap depending on your normal routine, age, gender, and more!

An app for women made by a woman.

I think one the greatest features on the app is that you have to validate that you are indeed a woman. Having this feature adds a layer of security and peace of mind when you know this space is for women only. I recently went to Seoul for my first solo trip, my plans for the trip was very last minute so the girls were very helpful guiding me through all my questions and concerns. During the trip I had such a great time exploring on my own and having the privilege to meet other NomadHer girls while in Seoul, I had such a good time spending my evening with the girls, getting to know them, and developing a friendship with the girls. If you are a girl that has hesitation on solo travel or finding a community that will help you, this is your app!

A Flourishing Global Community of Women

If you like to travel and sometimes travel alone (as a woman), then you NEED to download this app. Even at its beginning, this app allows users to share short and long form travel stories with pictures and also allows users to ask simple questions and share advice. Best Apps For Solo Travel

When you travel solo having travel apps makes your life so much easier. They help you navigate your way around, make sure you know what you’re spending and can help you understand the local language. Here are the best free travel apps (and some that you need to pay for) to  download before your next trip.

N.b. If you're ready to plan your solo trip but are unsure how to do it, read my how to plan a solo trip article.  

Maps.me is my favourite travel app. Although Google maps is great, it’s not accessible if you don’t have photo data. That’s where maps.me comes in. It’s an offline map that you download before you go. You can then follow the map when you’re in a taxi and show taxi drivers (who get lost) where you need to go. You can save places as favourites which pinpoints them on your map so you can locate them easily.   It even has a blue arrow pointing the way that you are meant to go. Can maps get any easier? This app is ideal for those of us who aren’t great at directions.

If you are planning on driving a car, Navmii is a free navigation and traffic app.

2. Currency

This app is a life saver if you are travelling to countries whose notes have more than one nought on the end. It works offline and is perfect if you are crossing the border with limited options to exchange money. All you need to do is put in the amount you want to exchange e.g. $10 and it shows the exact exchange in all of the currencies that you have already chosen. No more working out the currency in your head!

Designed to make your travel plans more organised, TripIt allows you to forward your travel confirmation emails to the app, aggregating your plans into a daily itinerary. You can see when your next tour and flight is, and have all your plans into one handy little app. It helps keep everything together.

4. WiFi Map

We all need WiFi when we travel, whether it’s to book onward travel for our trip, stay in touch with friends and family or just download the latest Netflix series. WiFi Map helps identify free hotspots in 95 countries across the globe for easy access to a WiFi connection. For the countries it doesn’t cover, purchase a sim card at the airport.

Uber are in so many countries and are ideal for those who us who struggle with taxi drivers either not knowing where they are going or speaking the same language (or both!) Uber allows you to order a taxi on your phone and pay for it direct through the app. It tells you your driver’s name, the numberplate of the car and how far away your taxi is. You’ll never have to use unlicensed taxis again.

6. Google Translate

A must-have travel companion, Google Translate helps translate 90 languages through text and audio features. Instead of taking a bulky pocket dictionary for your trip you can just use your phone if you have problems communicating. It even speaks the translated words for you too. You do need data to use it.

Finding last minute transportation can be a bit stressful. If you are travelling through Europe GoEuro compares buses, trains and flight prices across Europe. Just search for your route and look for a driver who is already going there. The app gives you details about the driver and the cost of the trip. It’s a bit like hitchhiking without having to stand at the side of the road. Your price basically covers the cost of the petrol and you may even make friends too. They even have a ladies only service too. BlaBlaCar overs 22 countries and has 25 million members.

For those of us who try to avoid the awkward dining out alone experience, Eatwith gives us the chance to dine with locals. It is a social dining platform that offers travellers an opportunity to have an authentic meal in-home in 60 countries worldwide with a local host. Eating local cuisine at restaurants is great, but dining in with locals is even better when you’re travelling.

10. Rick Steves

If you haven’t heard of him, Rick Steves is an absolute travel god. His website is bursting with detailed travel information to help you navigate your way around Europe. His self-guided walking tours are great for us Budget Girl about the Globes who don’t want to do a tour. He now has audio guides which you can download for various museums instead of having to pay for them at museums. Thank you Rick!

4. Tripcoin

Without a travel buddy to share costs, you may be shelling out a bit extra for traveling alone. It's easy to keep track of all your expenses and budget using Tripcoin. The app allows you to add in all your expenses (which you can also view offline) in various currencies. If you release but don't enter your pin, local police will be notified, coming to your rescue. Flying alone for the first time ? These apps will handle everything including finding the best flight deals, navigating the airport, and getting real-time alerts for flight or gate changes, cancellations, and more.

Skyscanner is one of the best apps to find flight deals. The app makes it easy to search and compare hundreds of flights and find the best prices available. 

If you’re just searching but are not ready to book, you can set up ‘Price Alert’ and it will send you notifications when the price goes down. The app also has a ‘Saved flights’ setting where you can save the flights you like without booking. 

Skyscanner makes it possible to book a complete trip, including flights, hotels, car rentals, etc. It’s also a good app to find travel inspiration by tapping ‘Explore’ to see their top inspirational destinations and their best deals at the moment from where you are based. 

COVID-19 has made traveling a bit confusing, but the app has a new useful feature to see restrictions country by country. 

Hopper is one of the top free travel apps out there, and it focuses on predicting if flight prices will go up or down. 

The way it works is you select your flight in the app and it sends you a notification when the flight drops to its lowest price, it basically tells you if it’s better to buy now, or wait a little longer. 

Hopper is used by many members of our FB group, and it’s ideal for comparing hundreds of airline and hotel options. Another unique feature of the app is their color-coded calendar, which shows the cheapest days to travel. 

Take the stress out of trip planning with Kayak , an app that compares hundreds of travel sites to give you exactly what you need for your trip, in a similar way to Skyscanner. 

Kayak is perfect for finding cheap flight deals, and similar to Hopper, it also has a feature called ‘Price Forecast’ which tells you whether you should wait for the price to go down or book now.

Kayak will sometimes show you ‘Hacker Fares’ to save some money, like putting together 2 one-way tickets instead of buying a round-trip flight (when it’s convenient). This travel app is very complete and besides flight deals, you can book accommodation and rent a car. 

Kayak can also help you get ready for a trip by sending you notifications for flight and gate changes, giving you access to boarding passes on and offline and planning out and sharing your itinerary via the app.

Like Skyscanner, Kayak also has the Fly everywhere option which you can use to find cheap flights based on where you are and when you can travel, just type “Everywhere” in the destination when searching.

Skiplagged is a free travel app with amazing low-cost travel deals including flights, hotels and cars not available on other travel booking sites by using hacks like ‘Hidden-city flights”, which are flights where you get off at the layover instead of the final destination. Set fare alerts and receive notification when prices drop. 

Expedia is one of the largest travel companies and one of the most popular travel apps. Like the company itself, the app is a complete travel planner with tons of options for accommodation, flights, cars and things to do. 

Besides being able to book flights, hotels and cars separately, Expedia offers different packages with flights, accommodation, car rentals and activities included. These are great to get affordable deals and have everything planned out. It also sends alerts for flight delays, gate changes and more.

Plus, Expedia has a great rewards program which gives you points every time you book, and you earn double reward points when you book through the app.

SFT TIP: always check the airline and hotel websites to compare prices before booking. Booking directly, especially with airlines, is always better than booking via a third party app. When it comes to flight changes, the third party service will have to liaise with the airline for you which may delay things and cost you in terms of administrative fees.

Besides booking flights, many apps are very useful for other aspects of plane travel like jet lag, navigating the airport, and entertaining yourself on board. Here are some recommendations of the best solo travel apps to use when flying.

Timeshifter 

Hard time with jetlag? We feel you. It’s tough to adjust to another time zone.

Jet lag is a disruption of the body’s circadian rhythm that occurs when you travel by plane across three or more time zones. It often causes sleeping problems, because your body is out of sync with the day-night cycle at your destination. 

The good news is there’s an app for it called Timeshifter . This great travel app was developed by scientists and it creates a customized jet lag prevention plan based on your trip itinerary (you can add many destinations!).

Get bored on flights? Netflix is perfect for all your on-board entertainment needs. 

For a monthly subscription cost of $8.99 USD for 1 screen or $13.99 USD for 2 screens (prices may vary per country) you can choose from thousands of movies and TV Shows. 

The great thing about the Netflix app is you can download TV shows and movies to your phone so you can watch them offline while you’re on the plane or elsewhere during your trip.

Use Netflix to get ready for a trip with TV shows and movies related to your destination. 

Make your trip feel like a movie with background music at all times. With Spotify , you can listen to millions of songs and original podcasts.

Download music to start your collections and playlists, follow other playlists and search music by mood or genre. You need to download the songs and playlists you’d like to listen to offline, otherwise you won’t be able to listen without Wi-Fi. 

You can use the app for free, but you’ll listen to some ads now and then. If you want the no-ad version, you can get Spotify Premium for a monthly subscription of $12.99 USD.

If you can’t sleep well during flights, you should try Calm , an app specialized in sleep and meditation that helps you reduce stress and sleep better with guided meditations, sleep stories, breathing techniques, stretching exercises and relaxing music.  

Studies show that mindfulness meditation improves mental health by reducing anxiety and stress and what better time than a trip to start a new habit?

The best travel app for reading anywhere! With Kindle , you can bring not one but tons of books in your phone or tablet. 

Read on the bus, while eating alone in a restaurant, sitting on a bench in a square, literally anywhere! When you don’t feel like reading, you can easily switch to the audible version of the book and listen. 

Purchase books from Amazon in a Kindle format, and you will be able to download those books to the app. 

Have a relaxing painting experience in a virtual coloring book. Colorfy is an app where you can paint mandalas, patterns, animals, florals and more. You can also upload your own drawings and make them come to life with color.

It works offline and doesn’t need Wi-Fi, perfect for in-flight entertainment. Colorfy has a free trial but the app has a monthly subscription cost which varies a lot because of promotions and deals. 

Apps for booking accommodation

Whether you want to book a room in a boutique hotel or stay in a hostel for the first time , these apps are the best for booking your ideal accommodation.

Depending on your preferences and destination, there are lots of options besides the traditional hotels and hostels, like booking a room in a local house, finding a local host to stay for free , booking a hotel room for just a few hours or renting a vacation home.

Booking.com

One of the best known apps for traveling, Booking offers the widest range of accommodation options from hotels, to hostels, vacation homes, or apartments. 

The app is super user friendly and has lots of filters to narrow down your search, depending on your preferences and budget. Besides booking stays, you can book your whole trip with Booking, since they also offer flight, car and taxi bookings. 

We highly recommend joining their Genius Loyalty Program, which unlocks special deals and discounts. We like Booking.com because of the hundreds of reviews for each accommodation option, and the fact that almost all hotels will have a refundable rate you can book with peace of mind if your travel plans change.

Hotels.com is a fantastic app to book any type of accommodation: hotels, vacation homes, apartments, and more. 

It usually has a smaller inventory of options than Booking.com but it offers a very attractive rewards program that gives you 1 free night for every 10 nights you book through the app. It also has a feature called ‘Secret prices’ which unlocks 10% discounts on certain properties. 

The app saves your bookings and you can access them without wifi and once you start booking more and more, you’ll be upgraded to Silver and Gold level in their loyalty program which will unlock extra benefits and faster customer service.

Hostelworld

If you’re looking to stay in a hostel instead of a hotel, Hostelworld is the best app for you. It’s a super comprehensive app with pretty much every hostel out there, highly recommended by our community members. 

Hostelworld is great for comparing rates and reading reviews of hostels all over the world. You’ll find everything from budget party hostels in Europe to charming eco hostels in Southeast Asia. Hostels are generally an affordable choice and most of them have options to book a private room or shared rooms (mixed or all female).  

One of the most popular accommodation apps, Airbnb lets you book a room in a local’s home, which is a great way to save money compared to staying in a hotel. You can also book an entire property like an apartment or house, which is perfect if you want your own space or are traveling with more people. 

Airbnb offers unique stays from a villa in a secluded beach to a cozy apartment in a city center, choose what fits you best. 

Check out the feature ‘Experiences’ to find things to do. If you’re traveling solo, this is a great way to attend an event, join a group and meet new people . 

Couchsurfing

HotelTonight 

Booked a spontaneous flight and don’t know where to stay? Download the HotelTonight app, and you’ll get last minute deals in accommodations close to your location.

MAPS.ME is an amazing offline map app that is great not just for driving but particularly for walking, hiking or cycling anywhere in the world. 

The app also has ready-made travel guides so you can plan your itinerary with the coolest things to do in every destination. It also gives you the option to save the locations you’ve visited and share them.  

Jessica, our group member, says it’s great for finding hiking trails. Hemei also uses the app: “One of my favorites is MAPS.ME, I have all the places where I would like to go and where I have been by using different colored pins and the good thing is that is also completely offline! Uses less data than Google Maps. I have traveled with the app to over 25 countries”.

‘The ultimate transport app’, Citymapper is an incredible app to compare your travel options across all transport globally. It offers detailed directions for trips made in public transport, walking, cycling and even by scooter. 

Citymapper combines all kinds of transport to provide the best routes, sometimes you’ll find efficient hidden routes you didn’t know. Citymapper has partnered with many transport apps to have everything you need in the app; compare cab fares, ask for a ride, hop on a shared bike or find the nearest scooter.

Lisa loves the app, she shared: “Citymapper is the best app I’ve used to navigate public transport in major cities. It has all capital cities in Europe (along with a lot of other major ones) and most major/capital cities with good public transport networks in the rest of the world. Works so much better for local options than anything else I’ve used. Only downside is you can’t use it to transfer between cities/towns – for that I love Rome2Rio”.

Highly suggested in our group, Rome2Rio is a travel app for transport and trip planning. It’s very user-friendly, just enter any address, city or landmark as your destination and get all your transport options, booking information, accommodation providers, and things to do.

You’ll find many transport options like flight, train, bus, ferry, rideshare or rental car. With Rome2Rio you will move around like a pro and save some money with their great deals.

Forget about car rental agencies, Turo is a car sharing market place where you can book any car anywhere within the US, Canada and UK from other users. 

The app makes it easy to book a car from local hosts: choose your model, find a car near your location and have your car delivered or pick it up from your host. Our community members love it!

Omio is a transport app where you can compare trains, buses, flights and ferries in a simple search. It works throughout Europe, the US and Canada.

Need to move in train, bus, flight or ferry? Omio helps you find the best tickets for your travels. You can get exclusive offers and buy everything safely in the app.

Kat says: “Omio is great for transportation. This one comes in handy for finding trains and buses across Europe. I’ve been planning a trip to Italy & that app has been a lifesaver for planning trains, comparable flights and buses”.

Private transport apps

There are many ridesharing apps you can use to book a private ride abroad:

Uber : enter your destination, choose your ride type (private, shared) and a nearby driver will come pick you up. You can request a ride at the moment or schedule one ahead of time. Works in 10,000 cities around the world.

Cabify : move around easily with a private ride in a car or taxi for some affordable rates. It operates in the following countries: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador,Mexico, Panama, Peru, Spain and Uruguay. 

Lyft : choose your destination and find a driver, bus route or nearest e-scooter to get you where you need to go. Pay directly in the app. Works in the US and Canada.

Didi : select your pickup and dropoff locations, find a driver and get an affordable rate for your ride. Didi operates in South Africa, Australia, Japan and a few countries of Latin America.

Grab : popular in Southeast Asia. Grab is a delivery and transport app that does everything for you, from grocery shopping to restaurant deliveries to transport. 

Careem : widely used in the Middle East. Careem offers to do your everyday chores: grocery shopping, transport rides, food delivery and any favor you need.

BlaBlaCar is an app for carpooling. You can find a ride with someone going your way or opt for a bus to get to your destination. 

The process is easy: search for a ride to your desired destination, find a ride close to you, request or book a seat instantly and pay through the app. BlaBlaCar buses are also a great choice, with many bargain tickets in comfy buses.

This is a great app for outdoor lovers! AllTrails helps you find the best hiking, running, and biking trails across the world. It has tons of curated trail maps with reviews and photos posted by its users. You can search for any kind of trail you want like dog-friendly, for mountain biking, kid-friendly, for backpacking, and more. 

Find a trail run nearby or head to explore a National Park, AllTrails has got your back for outdoor activities. “AllTrails lets me find awesome hikes nearby” shared Cara.

Managing money is a key part of travel. Get some help from professional money apps that will convert currencies, transfer money to other countries and administrate your travel budget.

XE currency converter

Handling money abroad can get confusing with all the different currencies out there, make it easy by downloading Xe Currency app, one of the most widely used currency converters. 

Recently, the app added an awesome transfer feature to send money to more than 130 countries around the world. Before sending the money, you’ll know the rate of exchange you’ll receive and you can also track your transfer. 

TravelSpend 

TravelSpend is a super handy app that tracks your spendings while traveling and is the perfect travel buddy for budget travelers because it lets you keep track of your expenses.

It is useful whether you’re saving up for your next trip or are already sightseeing abroad. You can add expenses in any currency and the app will automatically convert them to your home currency. 

If you’re traveling with someone else or a group of people, it has a feature for splitting costs and displaying who owes whom. 

Use Wise to make money transfers with the best exchange rates to more than 80 countries. Besides transferring money, with Wise you can have a virtual debit card to spend or withdraw money wherever you are. 

The app takes care of instantly converting different currencies at the real exchange rate, for a low extra cost. Wise can also be used by freelancers and digital nomads to get paid by clients. 

Languages apps

Did you know that 5% of language learning is done on mobile? This is backed up by data . There are many wonderful language apps available to help you learn the basics of the language in your destination. Here are our favorites.

Google Translate

Google Translate is a must-have travel app. It lets you translate anything even when there’s no internet connection or when the local language is in an alphabet you can’t read. 

Use the camera reader to translate text in images or objects by pointing your camera at for example a menu written in Russian or Chinese. I’ve used this function so many times abroad, it made my life easier while going grocery shopping in Tokyo.

It also has a voice recognition feature that allows it to talk into the microphone and translate instantly, along with translating live conversations for example, with your taxi driver.

“I like Google translate because I can learn how to say things and use my camera to read signs and menus” shared Shannon.

Duolingo is a free app for learning new languages in a fun way. It offers more than 35 languages and makes learning interactive by quick lessons that feel like games, where you’ll practice speaking, reading, listening and writing. 

Duolingo is the perfect travel app for learning the basics of the language at your destination. The app makes it easy to track your progress, make practice a habit and reach your language learning goals. 

Mondly is one of the most innovative language apps in the world, and has some seriously impressive features. They have been named “best app” by Facebook and Apple and use very advanced AI technology to give you a virtual teacher.

There are 33 languages to learn from your native language; most language learning apps only let you learn from English which really sets Mondly apart.

The chatbot is impressive and can correct your pronunciation and hold an actual conversation (we have tested it over and over), which is remarkable.

There’s a free trial to try the app, and afterwards you’ll have to pay a subscription to use it from $9.99 USD for 1 month up to $47.99 for a whole year. We have partnered with a new app called Mondly to offer a special discount to the community. You get 10% off using this link .

Safety apps

Safety is one of the main concerns of solo female travelers. In order to help women traveling solo, we developed our own Safety Index tool that rates every country based on how safe solo female travelers think it is. It is not an app but it is a mobile optimized page so you can check it on your mobile.

We’ve also found reliable apps that help ensure safety while traveling solo. Here are the top safety travel apps, suggested by our community and team members.

Smart Traveler

The US government developed Smart Traveler , an official app to access updated information for each country: safety issues, travel advice, U.S. embassy locations, and more.

The app also provides access to STEP (Smart Traveler Enrollment Program) which enables assistance in case of emergencies, unrest in foreign countries and lost/stolen passports.  

Sometimes, we don’t realize it, but connecting to public Wi-Fi hotspots is risky. Protect your online security with a VPN app like ExpressVPN . With this app, you can go online safely, and protect your personal data, information, passwords and browsing history. 

ExpressVPN has a 7-day free trial and then offers 1-month, 6-month and 12-month subscriptions.  

A free alternative for securing your Wi-Fi connection is TunnelBear , which you can use for no cost with 500 MB of browsing data per month.

The ‘travel worry-free’ app, Sitata combines travel planning and health information in one place. The app will tell you about health concerns, safety issues, recommended medications and flight information, all based on your travel itinerary. It also alerts you if there are certain events that might disrupt your trip, like disease outbreaks, transit strikes, or violence.

If you feel sick abroad or need to see a doctor, Sitata can connect you to doctors that specialize in travel medicine, this through a comfortable video call from your room. You can also find nearby hospitals or clinics if you need a physical check-up.

Amid the global pandemic, Sitata can help you with COVID-19 situations during your journey.

My Safetipin

My Safetipin is a personal safety app that suggests the safest routes to move around a city. The app is free and operates in 65 cities in 16 countries. The app provides visibility on safe walking routes based on crowd-sourced data like how well lit a street is, presence of police or security guards, public transport accessibility, and a few more parameters. 

Communication apps

Staying in touch is vital when traveling abroad. Social media apps have made it extremely easy to connect with our friends and family, and to get inspiration for our travels. Download these apps to have an efficient communication abroad.

The most popular and free messaging app. Used by over 2 billion people in the world, WhatsApp provides a simple way to message and video call. It’s great for keeping in touch with your friends and family during your travels. 

All your messages will remain private, since they are encrypted and no one can access them. But Whatasapp is particularly useful because it allows you to share your live location with any individual or group chat, so they can track you on your way to the hotel or when in transit.

Instagram is a fantastic social platform to connect with friends and get inspired by things you love. It’s great for sharing photos and videos of your trip and keeping others posted. 

Instagram has lots of content about destinations, which you can get inspiration from like cool photo spots, things to do, good restaurants, events, etc.

Finding the best things to do in a destination can be tricky. There’s a sea of information out there and lots of options to choose from. Luckily, there are travel apps that help narrow down the choices by putting together amazing authentic experiences. 

Take a look at these apps and find something unique to do, like meeting up with locals, booking off the beaten path tours, getting cheap ticket deals for attractions, or eating delicious local restaurants. 

Among the coolest apps for solo travelers is Meetup , an app to meet and connect with locals. Meetup allows you to join a group for any kind of activity, from wine tasting to hiking to yoga and beyond.

Some of the activities have a cost, but they promise to be authentic experiences since there will be a local host who created the group and will make everyone feel welcome. Instead of sightseeing the famous landmarks, try something different and join activities locals enjoy doing.

As a solo traveler, this is an awesome opportunity to meet locals, as well as other like minded people with similar interests. In the app, you can search by destinations and apply filters like day, type, distance, category and sort by relevance to assure you join the right group. Recommended by members of our group and used by our team, GetYourGuide is one of the best apps for traveling. Download the app to find tons of fun tours, activities and attractions in hundreds of destinations. 

It works simply: enter your location and the app will show you the best guided tours, must-see attractions, skip-the-line tickets, and more.

GetYourGuide is ideal for booking last-minute tickets or booking experiences in advance. You’ll get offline access to your mobile tickets 24/7.

Groupon is an app with unique local experiences at affordable prices. You’ll find awesome deals on things to see, eat and do in your destination. Get access to lots of activities of different categories, like sightseeing and tours, event tickets, cool local spots to visit, etc. 

You can also blend in like a local going to a gym, getting a relaxing massage or heading up to the new vegan market. Groupon often has discounts and special offers on all activities. Our members use this app a lot to get nice deals for tours and excursions.

For all the foodies out there, TheFork app makes it easy to book the right restaurant for every occasion, with great deals. The app operates in major cities in France, Spain, Belgium, Switzerland, Portugal, Denmark, Sweden, and Brazil. 

Find a perfect option entering your location and type of cuisine you desire. Scroll through loads of restaurants, see their scores, menus and photos. With each booking, you accumulate points, which can turn into euros to spend in your next meal.

Eatwith is an app for finding the best local food experiences on your trip. It connects you with locals and gives you lots of authentic activities to join like dinner parties, food tours or cooking classes. It’s a great way to immerse in the local gastronomy by joining hosts who are passionate about sharing their gastronomy with you.

Through the app, you’ll be able to book a seat at a table with other guests, which is a cool way to meet other people when traveling solo.

Other handy travel apps

In addition to all the travel apps we have recommended, there are these super handy and specific apps to take care of different aspects of traveling. Take a look and download the ones that suit you best.

A handy app for travelers, Flush makes it easy to find a public bathroom or restroom wherever you are. This free toilet finder has more than 200,000 toilets around the world. Also, it tells you which WCs have disabled access or a fee charge to use them. The app also provides directions to get there. 

Flo Period & Ovulation Tracker

An acclaimed app for women’s health and well being, Flo helps you keep track of your period and ovulation while traveling. This incredible app was developed by health experts and it’s a partner of the United Nations. 

Flo will help you plan your trip around your cycle, notifying the stages of your period and alerting you when you need to take any birth control pills or medication. It also predicts your fertile days and ovulation days, which are the ones with more probability of getting pregnant. 

This is a very useful app for travel, since you can set reminders for when your period is approaching, its start and end date, your ovulation day, and personalize Flo to get notifications about weight, sleep, water intake, step goal, and birth control.

One of the favorite apps for traveling, WiFi Map helps you find free Wi-Fi hotspots in more than 50 countries. The app will guide you to the nearest Wi-Fi spots, show passwords and provide Internet connections in a quick way.

Wi-Fi Map has other handy features like choosing a VPN provider to secure your connection or getting an eSIM card to get online with no Wi-Fi. Other useful widgets included are currency converter, world clock, tips calculator and local weather. 

Don’t know how much to tip in each country? Tipping appropriately varies in every place but GlobeTips will make it simple for you. 

This app gives you accurate advice on how to tip appropriately in every situation. As easy as scanning your bill, GlobeTips will calculate everything for you, considering factors like location, check splitting and tax excluding. 

Wheelmap is a free app to find wheelchair accessible places in your destination. Travelers will find wheelchair accessible restaurants, shops, toilets, cafes, parking lots, cinemas, bus stops, and much more. You can also join the app to contribute by rating the places you visit.

Nike Training Club

If you want to workout during your travels, download the Nike Training Club app to find tons of at-home workouts for every intensity level, from cardio and HIT to yoga and pilates. All their workouts are led by experts and you can also find great wellness resources like healthy recipes, great for cooking in your hostel or apartment. 

Attraction apps 

If you’re visiting an attraction, try to download its app. Sometimes, you can skip the paid guided tours and access the info available in the app. 

Many apps explain everything about the landmark and some may include a free audio guide feature like the Palace of Versailles app used by our group member Sandra: “I used an app for Versailles and another for the Rijksmuseum, both apps developed by the attraction and saved me from paying to rent an audio guide there”.

The Best Apps for Solo Female Travelers in 2023

What’s on your packing list when you prepare for a trip?

After checking your passport, wallet, and suitcase, you should always check your travel apps! The best apps for solo female travelers change a bit from country to country, and they can sometimes make or break your trip.

After over 5 years of full-time solo travel, these are the apps I can’t live without.

1. Offline Google Maps

If you download nothing else to prepare before your trip, at least do this.

Download an offline Google Maps map for the area that you’re planning to travel to. This way you’ll always know where you’re going and how to get there, even if you don’t have wifi or an international plan, or if you need some time to get your local SIM card.

How? Search for a place, say “Medellin, Colombia.” At the bottom of the area’s map, tap the bar that says “Medellin, Colombia” and click the “Download” button.

You can zoom in or out to set the exact parameters of the map you need. Make sure it covers the airport/train station you’re arriving into, as well as at least your first night’s accomodation. (More instructions and troubleshooting here .)

Alternately, you could use the recently trending app Maps.me .

2. Trip Whistle

Emergency phone numbers vary from country to country. You need to know them before the terrible moment when you really need to know them. Trip Whistle keeps all of those phone numbers in one place, so you have one less thing to worry about.

Note: Currently only available via Apple Store.

Geosure is a cheat sheet to neighborhood safety in new places , and an absolute must-have for solo female travelers.

According to Geosure, they use a “combination of big data, AI, on the ground reporting, and geospatial intelligence, all validated using statistical algorithms to provide you the most granular safety scores in the world.”

What I love most about Geosure is that in addition to their composite score (general safety), they offer specialized safety scores for women and LGBTQIA+ travelers. These options are available the drop-down menu on the safety map and in the detailed safety breakdown of each neighborhood.

The map is also super legible and easy to navigate. Plus, the “Experiences” feature is a nice extra, where real visitors can share comments about whether they felt safe or had any incidents in that area.

All in all, Geosure is hands-down one of the best apps for solo female travelers looking to add a little peace of mind to their trip.

4. Bsafe or Other Personal Safety App

Choose the personal safety app that is right for you. But you should definitely have at least one!

BSafe is the bells-and-whistles option and a better fit for me personally. But, it does charge for most plans after a 30-day free trial.

Its biggest selling point is that in borderline unsafe situations that aren’t quite emergencies yet, but your gut says they’re not exactly safe, you have a whole toolbox before the SOS button. BSafe lets you use the Fake Call, Follow Along, Timer, I’m Here, and Record functions for those in-between moments.

If the situation does escalate, you can turn on the app and activate its SOS button hands-free using voice activation set to a phrase of your choice, which will also automatically activate livestreaming and recording. I like that my set voice activation phrase is kind of undercover, so whoever is threatening me likely won’t know that I’ve activated it and called for help.

BSafe has given me a lot of peace of mind in new environments as a solo female traveler.

Wandersafe , Noonlight , Zich are also popular options at different price points among other travelers I’ve met. Mayday is a simple, free, user-friendly option that alot of women on the road swear by as well.

5. Offline Google Translate

You don’t need to speak the language of every country you travel to, but you can’t waltz into someone else’s country and demand they speak English either. (Trust me, no one likes a linguistic imperialist).

Google Translate can bridge the language barrier well enough to get you through most situations. You can even download the languages you need for offline use ! My favorite functions are image scanning – esp. for food menus and street signs – and audio translating for real-time conversations.

6. Your Personal Banking Apps

Whatever banks you use, make sure to have their apps installed and set up properly before you start your travels .

Set up your correct login info, fingerprint access, phone numbers you will have access to, and back-up phone numbers of a trusted family member or friend in your home country .

While these aren’t travel apps per say, they’re totally essential to any type of travel. You want to be able to lock and unlock cards, report theft, verify transactions, disable fraud alerts, and check balances on the go. Adding your card info to your mobile wallets like Google Pay or Apple Pay before you go is great, too.

P.S. Remember to bank with an institution that doesn’t charge international transaction fees, and preferably one that reimburses ATM fees. This way, you can reject the bogus conversion rates at international ATMs. For this, I like Charles Schwab, Chase, Wise, and Revolut.

7. Tourlina

Tourlina is an app for solo female travelers to find other women to plan a trip with, or to meet up with during intersecting trips. Passion Passport calls it “your newest favorite travel companion” for meeting like-minded women while travel solo.

They have a strong focus on safety, screening new members, and creating community . Though, I would love if it were a little more LGBTQIA+ friendly and had more users to increase the chance of matches.

My friends and travel buddies constantly joke about my tiny bladder. So, when you’re out exploring a new city and need to pee, what’s a girl to do?

Flush finds public bathrooms anywhere you are in the world , organized by proximity to you and listed with details about handicap access and entry cost.

(Note: In rural destinations, you’ll have to ask around the old fashioned way.)

9. Booking / Accomodation

I’ve had a few situations where a hotel or hostel (*cough* SELINA) has cancelled my reservation after I arrived to a destination, or informed me of their overbooking less than 24 hours before check-in.

Having the Booking app on my phone meant I could go from homeless for the night to booked into a 4 star hotel with a massive “Genius discount”+ “mobile-only discount” in under 10 minutes , and file a complaint with Booking — all during the walk to my new property.

• For shorter stays (a few days) : Booking
• For mid-range stays (1-3 weeks) : Airbnb
• For longer stays (1-6 months) : Anyplace or Coliving
• For hostels outside of Asia: Hostelworld
• For hostels and hotels in Asia: Agoda

10. Skyscanner

A travel app that saves you hundreds or thousands in airfare for free? Yes, please.

Skyscanner is my #1 go-to for cheap flights. And don’t just take my word for it; the top travel bloggers and experts agree with me .

While I think Skyscanner works a lot better on desktop, the app has saved my life more than once. Most recently, I pulled it out at the immigration desk when I wasn’t allowed to enter Guatemala without proof of onward air travel. Sorted in 3 minutes.

(Now I use the Onward Ticket website for that, which unfortunately doesn’t have an app yet but works great on mobile! It lets you reserve a 48 hour validity onward travel flight for $12.)

I use SkyScanner for 3 specific functions: Go Anywhere , Cheapest Month and/or Entire Month .

Once Skyscanner has told me which destinations have super cheap flights at certain times, I take that specific information over to Google Flights and Momondo for more detailed info about the flights available, then set alerts for the cheapest time to buy and take advantage of price drops.

My recent Skyscanner app finds: $97 Texas to Guatemala. $114 Colombia to Spain. $110 New York to Italy.

11. Whatsapp

The infamous universal calling and texting service used by over 2 billion people around the world. Outside of the US, literally everyone has Whatsapp – individuals and businesses.

Rebtel is a great affordable alternative or add-on to a local SIM card . They offer tons of customized plans for international calling without depending on wifi.

What I like best is that it functions just like a normal phone call. The person you’re calling won’t know you are using Rebtel, and they don’t need to have the app to receive your call.

It’s been a great tool for me to call family, friends, and businesses that don’t have Whatsapp.

13. Rideshare apps

For most cities: Uber , Bolt

Central and South America: Cabify , Didi

Asia: Didi , Grab , Gojek , Yandex

Middle East: Careem

Europe: TaxiEU , Cabify , Motar

For long distances: BlaBlaCar , Hitch

* I strongly discourage the use of popular Israeli rideshare app Gett, which operates in Israel and Europe. The service has been sued for allowing customers to discriminate against Arab drivers and choose only Jewish drivers, nearly doubled its commissions since start of pandemic, and violates BDS principles .

14. SmartTraveler

SmartTraveler is the official U.S. State Department app for travelers. It’s the best source for double-checking information related to visas, entry requirements, covid-19 status and restrictions, travel warnings, and embassy locations and contact info.

I’m personally enrolled in STEP (Smart Traveler Enrollment Program) because it’s the best way to allow my government and family to locate me in an emergency (e.g. natural disaster, political unrest, or war). Also, it’s the easiest way to replace your passport if it gets lost or stolen.

You can sign up on the app or online. While Smart Traveler definitely isn’t the trendiest or flashiest app for solo female travelers, it’s a back-to-basics necessity.

15. Mobile Passport

Mobile Passport is the fastest, easiest way to clear customs. The official U.S. Customs and Border Protection recognized app will let you breeze through a seperate line for immigration at many airports, but not all.

A combination of Mobile Passport , TSA Global Entry , and exclusively carry-on luggage keeps me breezing through any airport. So, I highly recommend all three!

Solo travel can be an equally liberating and frightening experience—a claim to independence coupled with the knowledge that, if anything goes wrong, it’s up to you to extract yourself from that situation.

Rather than letting that fear stop you, however, with research, preparation, and foresight, this fear can heighten your intuition, sharpen your global awareness, and increase mental resilience in the face of the unknown. In fact, bloggers such as Hey Ciara often cite solo travel as a rich opportunity for personal growth, self-reflection, and discovery—free from the expectations and schedules of friends, partners, family, or other potential travel partners. 

For those looking to embark on their solo travel experience, there are apps to help. Explore these seven must-have apps below to keep your trips as safe and seamless as possible.

1. Noonlight

Considered the leading brand for safety products and apps, Noonlight (formally known as SafeTrek) is a safety app that can help you get from point A to point B or extract yourself from a situation without fear. Simply open the app and hold the safety button for as long as needed. Once you’re in a safe location, you can release the button and enter the four-digit pin. If you do not enter the pin, Noonlight will then notify the police of your location to silently send help.

Noonlight also partners with Tinder to help women (and men!) with unsafe dates when traveling or at home. You can discreetly notify the police if you’re feeling unsafe or need help. Other features include adding a badge to your profile as a Noonlight-protected account or sharing your location and date profile using Noonlight’s timeline feature. 

Note: Noonlight currently only works within the United States. For international travel, dial the local emergency number for help and assistance.

My go-to travel app, maps.me is a lifesaver when traveling without data or WiFi.

Download the location(s) you’re planning to travel to and save (or “pin”) the restaurants, shops, and historic sites you want to visit. Once there, you can use the map to navigate by car or on foot without wasting data or using WiFi. Not only is this app extremely helpful to plan out the best route for walking adventures (by seeing what locations are near one another), it also has a compass-like dot that updates with your location in real-time, so you can always know where you are while traveling alone. 

For the female solo traveler on a budget, Hopper is the cash-saving hack for hotel, car, and flight deals that you can’t live without.

Pick your to-and-from destination and find the best months and days of the week for cheap travel to your dream destination. Once you click on a to-and-from date, Hopper will then aggregate a list of flights for you to choose from based on time, budget, and airline. Once booked, research hotels and cars for your one-stop-app to plan all your travel needs.

4. NomadHer

An up-and-coming app, NomadHer is considered the #1 app for solo female travel. Ask questions about your travel destinations, join organized meet-ups, and be a part of a safe community for women. 21 Must-Have Apps for Solo Travellers in 2024

Looking for the best ap ps for solo travellers?

Then you’ve come to the right place as I’m a full-time traveller and I mostly travel solo.

Travelling solo can be difficult at times, but thankfully there are apps for solo travellers which make our lives slightly easier.

So I’ve put together a list of some of my favourites. From essential apps like Google Maps to apps that help you make friends, these apps will be sure to improve your trips as a solo traveller.

Apps for Solo Travellers

1. google maps.

Google Maps is an undebatable “must-have” for any solo traveller. In my opinion, it’s the best maps app there is.

I use it every single day when I’m travelling. It’s pretty self-explanatory why it’s useful: you need to know how to get to places.

But I also use Google Maps for deciding where to eat, as I can search for the cuisine I’m in the mood for, and get reviews of the potential options.

It’s not a flashy app, and it doesn’t offer anything special, but it’s an essential app for solo travellers.

My top tip would be to download the map of the city or destination you are in, as then you can use it offline without any phone signal, which comes in useful especially if you’re somewhere where the reception isn’t so great.

2. Google Translate

Google Translate is another app which I consider essential.

While I always recommend learning some basic phrases in the local language, it’s unlikely you’ll become fluent in the language of every country you visit.

The most obvious use of Google Translate is that you can communicate with people, especially using the feature where you can record someone speaking and it will translate into your language. It’s so useful.

But it also helps you get by in places where you don’t speak the language. For example, it helps you understand what you can order from the menu in a restaurant, or it can help you understand when the next train is due at the station.

Again, I use it every day when travelling, especially as I have allergies so if I buy any food I check the ingredients.

My top tip would be to download the language so like with Maps, you can use it offline. It can be a lifesaver.

Even though one of the best parts about travelling solo is the people you meet, you do still spend some time alone, particularly when travelling between destinations.

Spotify helps journeys go quicker as you can allow the time to pass by while listening to music or listening to a podcast. Plus, it’s a way of feeling like you are at home if you are feeling homesick.

But of course, since you are travelling on a budget, just stick with the free version of Spotify. It’s not worth paying for the premium version if you only use it every now and again.

4. Uber/Lyft/Bolt/Grab

No matter where you are in the world, even if you are travelling on a budget , you’ll need to get a taxi every now and again.

Instead, as a solo traveller, I recommend getting an Uber (or equivalent) instead. Usually, it’s much safer and it’s often cheaper too.

Depending on where you are in the world will depend on which ride-sharing service you use. For example, there is no Uber in Thailand , and instead, they use Grab.

I’d recommend just having all 4 options (Uber, Lyft, Bolt and Grab) downloaded, as you never know when they will come in handy.

5. Rome2Rio

No matter where you are in the world, Rome2Rio can tell you exactly how to get between two places and the best ways to get there.

How it works is you put in where you want to go, let’s say Lisbon for example, it will give you all the options to get there. So if you’re in Porto, it will give you all of the bus and train times and all of the prices.

It’s so useful as a solo traveller to have all the options presented in one place rather than having to research every mode of transport individually. It’s one of the best apps for solo travellers, no doubt about it.

6. Facebook

Facebook is a social media app which is generally popular with older people – I never really used Facebook before I started travelling.

But as a solo traveller, Facebook is an absolute golden gem. Facebook Groups are such a useful resource when planning a trip, and when actually travelling too.

For example, if you’re backpacking Jordnan , you can join a group and find answers to pretty much anything you need to know.

And if you can’t, you can just ask a question and some people will answer you. It’s really good for very specific questions that you wouldn’t know the answer to unless you’ve been before- and people who have been before will answer you.

It’s got so much information that isn’t available publicly (most groups are private), so definitely make sure to download Facebook and take advantage of the groups.

7. Backpackr

And speaking of social media, Backpackr is pretty much a social media but only for backpackers and solo travellers.

It allows you to connect with other people who are travelling solo, and plan to meet up. I still believe that staying in a hostel is the best way to meet people, but in the modern world, it’s good to have an option to meet people online too.

I’ve even seen people plan trips with total strangers using the app. Part of the joy of solo travel is spontaneity, so randomly joining someone on a trip that you weren’t even planning on going on is pretty in line with the mindset of solo travellers.

The app also has a number of other benefits such as discounts on hostels and sometimes the app even organises events like pub crawls.

Just like how Uber isn’t operational in some countries, Google Maps is a little below par in some countries too.

In Thailand, for example, I found it would often take me a 20 minute walk rather than a direct 10 minute walk. I know people have this complaint all over the world, but it’s a lot worse in other countries.

That’s why I also recommend having Maps.me , which works better in countries where Google Maps doesn’t. I’ve found it even has more locations, for example, a small cafe in Bangkok which might not be on Google, is on Maps.me.

It’s also the best app for hiking trails and routes , which can be useful if you’re looking for things to do while you travel.

Waze is another option for a map app where Google Maps doesn’t work as best.

Just like with Maps.me, it often has more locations in countries where Google Maps doesn’t work as well.

The two apps are honestly very similar, and I would probably only have one or the other. I downloaded both and chose which one I prefer, which personally is Maps.me.

That being said, if you drive (not while travelling, just in general), I recommend using Waze as it shows road accidents, speed cameras, etc. in real-time.

10. Eatwith

Eatwith is exactly what you’d guess from the name: it’s an app where you can find people to eat with.

It’s one of the best apps for solo travellers because no one wants to eat in a restaurant alone, right? I’ve done it countless times and it’s not very fun.

Eatwith gets rid of this problem and allows you to share a meal with someone instead. After all, the best part about travelling solo is the people you meet.

11. Instagram

Whenever I’m travelling, I always meet so many people from all around the world, especially since I stay in hostels.

I always make sure to follow everyone I meet on Instagram so we can stay in touch and follow each other’s future travels. I’ve made really good friends and I might want to message them every now and again, and Instagram is the perfect way.

It’s also what people usually ask me for first if they want to stay in touch. It’s always “Do you have Instagram?”, never anything else. That’s why I recommend having it, even if you don’t post.

It also means if you ever visit someone’s home country, you can meet up again. For example, I met up with a guy from Athens when I visited Athens a few months after meeting him in Washington D.C.

Meetup is another app where you can probably guess from its name what it’s designed to do.

You enter all of your interests and the app will pair you with like-minded people. It’s kind of like Tinder but for solo travellers, and without all of the swiping.

The app also has lots of events and meetups. For example, if you’re interested in brunch and you’re backpacking in Melbourne (famous for brunch), you could go to a brunch meetup and get to know some like-minded people.

Stippl is my favourite travel planning app. It’s so easy to use and it shows everything really visually which I like.

For example, I’m currently planning a trip to Thailand and look at the map below and how clear all of the information is.

While I do think being flexible is one of the biggest pros of backpacking , it’s still nice to have somewhat of a plan, and Stippl is my favourite way of visualising it.

14. Travello

Travello is an app for solo travellers designed by solo travellers for solo travellers , offering a unique blend of features that make exploring the world alone both exciting and secure.

It’s pretty similar to some of the previous options as its main goal is to connect travelers with others who have similar interests. Whether you feel a bit isolated when travelling alone or you are looking to meet new people, Travello is a great place to find those connections.

I also really like Travello’s travel guides. They have lots of guides for visiting places as a solo traveller , telling you the best places to meet new people etc. etc.

15. Tourlina

Tourlina is an app where solo travellers can make friends with each other, but only for females.

As a guy, I’ll admit I often forget the privilege I have of not having to be scared of walking alone at night and things like that, and I fully appreciate why female solo travellers will want to stick with other female solo travellers, and Tourlina provides the perfect opportunity for making new friends.

Safety is a top priority for Tourlina. The app ensures that all users are verified , providing a secure environment for women to connect. This verification process helps to maintain a trusted community , allowing users to interact and plan their travels with peace of mind.

Must-Have Apps for Budget Travellers

16. Hostelworld

Whenever I’m travelling, I always stay in hostels, and Hostelworld is what I always use to find and book hostels.

One of my favourite hostel quotes is “A hostel is not just a place to stay; it’s a community of like-minded wanderers”.

That’s why I always use the “atmosphere” rating on Hostelworld to choose which hostel I’m staying in.

I don’t want to stay in a hostel where no one speaks to each other. So I always go off the atmosphere rating.

It’s a must-have app, and you sometimes can even get a discount by booking on the app rather than online.

17. Skyscanner

You know what Kelly, I am traveling the world on my own for years and I don’t even HAVE a smart phone nor do I need or want one. Where is the spirit of adventure if everything is being taken care of at the press of a button? What’s wrong with an old fashioned phrase book or learning a language of two? I have a cell phone that’s about 10 years old, works everywhere in the world and is all I need . And, nobody gives it a second glance or would dream about stealing it.

Up until about three months ago, I had an ooold cell phone (it had an antennae and everything) and I felt the same way as you, Inka. I didn’t understand what the fuss was about smart phones and I was proud of the fact that I didn’t have one. I’ve recently switched so that I can work more efficiently, and it’s totally changed things for me. The convenience of having maps and GPS and email at the tip of my fingers is great. The world of travel applications is huge–some are fun, some are practical and some can enhance your trip. Now that I’ve made the switch, I’m really excited to start playing around with new applications like these–thanks Christina for finding these great ones!

Any tips on useful apps for when wifi is not available?

The Google Translate, AllSubway, Instagr.am and the Pill apps all work without wi-fi.

Whenever I travel internationally, I travel without wi-fi access to my phone, because I don’t want to have to pay the extra roaming fees.

I’ve found that there are tons of great travel apps that don’t require wi-fi (in addition to the ones I mentioned above) such as guide books, maps, language dictionaries and other destination content. The best thing to do is make sure your device is loaded with whichever apps you want before you leave home, so then you’ll be able to be wi-fi free on your trip!

Perhaps you have a bucket list of places you've always wanted to travel at the ready but you just keep waiting for the right person to go with you. But if your friends are busy, you just broke up with your partner and you're not feeling a family vacation, you don't have to wait to embark on a new adventure – just go solo .

Traveling by yourself, even as a woman, is not as challenging or scary as you might think. There are plenty of benefits: You don't have to adhere to anyone else's schedule, budget or food preferences, so you can truly prioritize yourself. Solo travel means doing whatever you want whenever you want, while seeing the places that you most want to visit. Adventuring alone as a woman can empower you to see the world on your terms.

Whether you're concerned about safety or seeking companionship, there are plenty of places around the globe to consider for your next solo trip. U.S. News has compiled this list of top solo travel destinations (and helpful tips) with expertise from women who have traversed the globe by themselves and loved it.

Barcelona, Spain

With a visit to Barcelona , immerse yourself in the local culture at your leisure, whether you want to dine at Michelin-starred restaurants or go cheer at a football (soccer) game. Writer Mona Gable says, "Barcelona is a place of wonder − medieval neighborhoods, sunny beaches, and world-class museums, not to mention Antoni Gaudí's celebrated architecture." She enjoyed exploring the Mediterranean port city, especially because of its walkability and easy-to-navigate transportation system with metro lines and buses. She also noted feeling safe on her own: "As a female traveler, I felt perfectly at ease wandering many neighborhoods alone, even at late hours, when Catalans famously dine out."

Travel tip: Gable says it's best to avoid touristy Las Ramblas – Barcelona's main thoroughfare – except to see La Boqueria, the city's legendary food market.

Botswana is well known for African wildlife safaris , where travelers might encounter elephants, zebras, rhinos, lions and cheetahs while glamping in luxury tents and dining on gourmet food. "Wildlife travel offers an outstanding combination of camaraderie, safety and autonomy," says Darcie Smith, owner of Great Expeditions Travel . She recommends Botswana's green season (November to March) for solo female travelers; at this time of year the single supplement surcharge is waived at many safari camps, which offers an excellent value and means you're more likely to meet other solo travelers. It is also peak season for birding, and you'll find plenty of opportunities to spot wildlife in the lush landscape.

Many camps will send someone to meet guests upon arrival to help you navigate airports or transfers. In Smith's experience, camp guests are also escorted to their rooms at night, for an added wildlife safety element. "Solo female travelers can enjoy daily shared safari activities in intimate camps that encourage social gatherings with full independence to design the itinerary around what's best for you," she says.

Travel tip: Smith recommends making your social media accounts private when you travel so strangers can't track your location as well as learning about the customs of your destination. "This will help avoid accidentally coming across as forward or flirtatious based on local standards," she explains. "For example, while long eye contact may be considered a sign of self-confidence or being polite at home, it may come across as flirtatious in your new destination."

Picture yourself indulging in pizza and gelato, visiting world-famous museums, touring picturesque wineries, and shopping at designer boutiques – all of that is at your fingertips in Italy , writer Martha McCully's go-to travel destination. "Italians want to share their culture and it's part of their personality to welcome you," she says. "Plus, the food and wine are outrageously divine."

The idea that traveling solo means you will be alone is a misconception, according to McCully. "It's simply not true," she says. "Book a group tour at your destination, or DM a friend from your past on Instagram, which is what I did in Bologna." There are plenty of unique ways to meet fellow travelers in Italy; she recommends signing up for a cooking class in Bologna through Taste of Italy, a food tour by Curious Appetite or a painting class with Plein Air Tuscany. "The idea is you will be with like-minded travelers and someone else is doing all the organizing," McCully explains.

Travel tip: McCully suggests sticking to your wellness routine while on the road to keep healthy habits. "I like to take my rituals with me," she says. "When I ground myself with what I know makes me feel good physically and mentally, it's like I'm living in another country, not just visiting."

With glaciers, volcanoes, waterfalls and hot springs galore, the dramatic landscapes of Iceland make it a must-visit destination. The "Land of Fire and Ice" is also known for puffins, its Viking history and women's empowerment, with the country's reputation as a champion of gender equality.

"Iceland is a favorite destination for female solo travelers because it is easily one of the safest countries in the world," says Jenny Ly, professional travel blogger at Go Wanderly . Iceland has one of the world's lowest crime rates and no animal predators dangerous to humans – just prepare for challenging weather and exercise caution if you plan to do any driving. Ly's itinerary recommendations include whale watching, with nearly a dozen types of whales navigating Icelandic waters; visiting Vatnajökull Glacier's ice caves; and chasing the northern lights in the darker months (October to April).

Travel tip: Ly encourages solo female travelers to not let the lack of a travel companion prevent them from exploring the world. "It can be both empowering and rewarding for women to travel solo, at least once in their life," she says. "While traveling alone can be riskier than traveling with others, it can also be more fun and gratifying." Her tip is to always be aware of your surroundings.

San Miguel de Allende, Mexico

While some women may shy away from traveling to Mexico due to safety concerns, travel blogger Jeanine Romo of lewildexplorer.com , who has ventured solo to many countries, recommends visiting the charming town of San Miguel de Allende . "I decided to go on my own and had such a wonderful time," she says. "The people are friendly, the hospitality is amazing, and there are so many things to do if you love art, incredible food, and incredible architecture." San Miguel de Allende is a great option for women travelers because the city center is easily walkable and Uber is available, which Romo says made her feel safe because she could always call a ride.

Travel tip: For women traveling by themselves, Romo advises doing research on transportation options (such as local buses, metro lines and ride-sharing app availability) before you arrive. "I like to know how walkable the city I'm visiting is," says Romo. "This helps me feel so much more confident when navigating a new city."

New Zealand

From pristine beaches on the North Island to snowy mountains on the South Island – and all kinds of geological wonders in between – the diversity of New Zealand is a major draw for tourists. Travelers can learn about the indigenous Māori culture, visit a sheep farm or go sailing in Auckland , among an abundance of other incredible things to do in this island nation.

Travel blogger Nina Ragusa of whereintheworldisnina.com enjoys visiting because of the welcoming culture, outdoor adventure and feeling of safety. "Traveling New Zealand as a solo woman is quite easy, and if it's your first trip solo, this would be a good country to start in," she says. Ragusa spent a month camping in a van by herself and said she never had to worry about her safety, even in more remote areas. "I went on hikes solo, some of them deep into the mountains for miles and miles, and was either alone or passing other tourists or friendly kiwis to wave hello to," she says. Ragusa adds that New Zealand is not the cheapest travel destination, but her personal recommendation for saving money on longer trips here is to rent – or buy and later sell – a van to live in.

Travel tip: Ragusa recommends steering clear of the outskirts of the bigger cities (particularly if you do travel by van). She warns that, as in most urban destinations around the world, those parts of New Zealand are where you're more likely to run into trouble.

El Calafate, Patagonia, Argentina

For an outdoor adventure in South America, Argentine Patagonia offers pristine ice hiking, backpacking, kayaking, trekking and wildlife viewing. Nicol Gillum-Thomas, an African-American solo female traveler whose mission is to encourage women to live life as an adventure, enjoyed her time in the town of El Calafate. "El Calafate, Argentina, was the destination that seemed the most off-putting in my imagination, but became the trip with the most adventure, awe-inspiring beauty and ease," she says.

Travel tip: Gillum-Thomas recommends a stay at the América del Sur Hostel Calafate, saying she appreciated the clean accommodations and interesting guests.

Dubrovnik, Croatia

If you dream of a getaway that includes picturesque beaches and crystal-clear water, Croatia is the perfect spot to explore. In Dubrovnik , the ancient city walls and medieval architecture of Old Town , a UNESCO World Heritage Site, set a particularly gorgeous scene when the sun goes down. Tamara Williams, owner of solo female travel-focused blog My Elated Odyssey , says the unmatched beauty of the surrounding sea and mountains is only one reason to plan a trip here.

"The locals are some of the nicest people I have ever met," Williams says. "They truly made it feel like a second home. They spoke English well, so no need to worry about a language barrier." She adds that this Balkan country is also considerably more affordable than destinations in Western Europe.

Travel tip: For solo female travelers, Williams suggests staying in the Lapad neighborhood or near Old Town. "Both are full of cafes, bars and shopping to keep you busy," she says.

Svalbard, Norway

You can't go wrong in Norway , with breathtaking fjords, fascinating wildlife, scenic railways, outdoor adventure and the chance to glimpse the northern lights . Jurga Rubinovaite, founder of the travel blog Full Suitcase , says you won't want to miss Svalbard: a Norwegian archipelago located approximately 800 miles from the North Pole. "It is one of the most unique nature destinations in the world," she says. "Despite being so far north in the Arctic, it's extremely easy to visit and is also a great and safe destination for solo female travelers."

The main town, Longyearbyen, is the focal point of activities in Svalbard, which range from hiking and boat tours in the summer to winter pursuits such as ice cave visits and snowmobiling. "Because of the presence of polar bears, everything you do in Svalbard requires booking a guided tour, so you are always in safe hands," Rubinovaite explains. "Longyearbyen town itself is very lively and safe, with lots of accommodations, restaurants, shops, and a few museums, all within easy walking distance from each other."

Travel tip: For women traveling alone, Rubinovaite advises thorough research in advance of your trip to this Arctic locale; staying in hotels, rather than private accommodations; and booking guided tours or looking for a travel buddy when venturing out to very remote places.

Head to Ireland for a memorable solo getaway complete with rolling emerald-green hills, fairytale castles and Irish coffee. Experienced traveler Kelie Fiala of the Vacations Planned blog ranks this European country at the top of her list for solo travel spots. "Many attractions in Ireland are wonderful for solo travelers because they offer peaceful spots to stop and enjoy the gorgeous views, but also provide plenty of opportunities to meet friendly people at cafes and other points of interest," she says.

Fiala appreciates the nightlife and music scene of Ireland as much as the history and scenery. She suggests experiencing some of the country's pubs, even if you're a woman traveling alone, since you'll almost always find live music and friendly people. "Even if you start out by yourself, you'll easily find that you're having great conversations in no time," she says.

Travel tip: Fiala warns that for solo travelers, especially women, it's best to be careful how much you drink and leave the situation if you ever feel uncomfortable. But she also encourages women to not be afraid to have a chat. "You could hear some great stories, and make a new friend," she says.

Beautiful beaches, delicious food, friendly people, exotic animals and floating markets are just some of the incredible things that you can experience in Thailand . Loredana Gogoescu, head of content for Destguides.com , says she felt safe in Thailand as soon as she arrived. "Thai people are hospitable and kind," she says. "Moreover, as a solo traveler, I was surprisingly never alone. I had to book a private room for myself at one point just to get a breather, as I was constantly meeting new people!"

Travel tip: If you're apprehensive about exploring a new place on your own, especially if you've never traveled abroad before, Gogoescu recommends sorting out all the logistics like accommodations and transportation in advance so it's easier to acclimate once you get there. She adds, "If you're afraid of being alone, join different apps like Bumble and Facebook groups for the destination you're traveling to, to see if you can match up with other solo female travelers who will be in the area at the same time as you."

Netherlands

Nailah Hayward of TheresSoMuchToSee.com says the Netherlands is a superb option for first-time solo female travelers, based on ease of transportation, overall safety, the variety of things to do and other factors. "The Netherlands comes out high on all of these areas," she says. "And after multiple visits to the country, traveling through big cities and small towns, I always felt extremely safe." With the country's extensive train system, in addition to local trams and bike lanes, navigating the Netherlands by yourself doesn't pose too great a burden. Hayward also appreciates the ease of communicating with locals as an English speaker, since most people speak English in addition to Dutch.

"Whether you are into the arts scene, outdoor activities, luxury experiences, cultural exploration or culinary delights, the Netherlands has a huge variety of activities to dive into," Hayward says. "All of these elements make the Netherlands a place that I enthusiastically recommend for solo women travelers."

Travel tip: Don't carry cash. Hayward says most transactions can be done electronically, so there's no need for frequent trips to the ATM.

Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands

Luxury family travel influencer Irina Claire Bromberg suggests Grand Cayman in the Cayman Islands as a top spot for solo female travel, partially because of its high safety rating from the U.S. Department of State. There's also no shortage of activities in this Caribbean destination, with Bromberg calling Stingray City a must. "The stingrays are peaceful and gentle," she says. "They glide along the ocean floor and you're free to observe and even play with them in their natural habitat." She also recommends soaking up some sun at the renowned Seven Mile Beach .

Grand Cayman is also a foodie paradise, according to Bromberg. "The vibrant dishes are as tasty as they are exciting, representing the fascinating mix of cultures and traditions that make the island so unique," she says. Her suggestions for food to try include the classic Cayman-style lobster, coconut shrimp and Johnny cakes.

Travel tip: Bromberg recommends checking the U.S. Department of State safety rating and other solo travelers' experiences prior to booking a trip.

This lively, fast-paced metropolis is also rich in history and culture, with remnants of bygone eras visible in the skyline of Istanbul, according to Fuuad.

For solo travelers, there are endless opportunities for memorable experiences. "Wherever you go in Istanbul, multiple surprises await you at the corner of every street, its cobblestone alleys, or within the maze-like structure in Grand Bazaar," Fuaad says. The network of easy and convenient public transportation options also makes Istanbul a great choice for women traveling solo.

Travel tip: For first-time solo female travelers, Fuaad suggests taking time to adjust to being on your own: "Start small, by venturing to your next neighboring town or city first, or any city in your country first before you make the leap into solo traveling abroad." She adds, "Don't do things you're not comfortable with. Listen to your gut feelings – they're always right!"

Bali, Indonesia

For a tropical island escape, Bali is undeniably magical. Its natural beauty spans volcanoes, waterfalls and stunning beaches, as well as sprawling rice fields, diverse nightlife and breathtaking temples. Katie Caf, travel blogger at KatieCafTravel.com , who has been traveling solo full time for the past year and a half, says Bali is by far her favorite place to visit. "The Balinese people are very respectful towards female travelers, there's no street harassment based on gender like you might find in other locations, and while no place is perfect, Bali just feels very safe as a woman," Caf says. She adds that, although Indonesia is a conservative country, she found that women traveling there aren't expected to cover up except in temples or other sacred religious sites.

Travel tip: Caf recommends that travelers always use ride-sharing apps like Uber, Gojek and Grab rather than hailing cabs off the street, since the apps' tracking features make them much safer to use for solo female travelers in foreign countries. Some of these sites also allow you to share your route with chosen contacts for added safety.

Paris is one of the most iconic destinations in Europe for any traveler. Antoinette Harris, founder and owner of travel blog Frolic & Courage , considers the "City of Love" a superb option for women traveling solo due to its cuisine, cultural attractions and hands-on activities of all sorts. "I consider Paris the city of self-love because it has everything solo women travelers need to care for themselves and their interests," Harris says.

With the flexibility of traveling on your own, you can plan the Paris trip of your dreams. Depending on what you're interested in, you may choose to learn about French cooking, immerse yourself in the Louvre , attend an opera at the historic Palais Garnier or browse local shops, as Harris has done. "Uninhibited by the demands or requests of others, I was able to really take the time to focus on who I am, what I wanted and what sparks joy and life in my spirit," she says. "Traveling to Paris taught me how to truly enjoy spending time solo."

Travel tip: One of Harris' top tips is to not bring more than you can carry, as you won't always find someone to help you with your luggage if an escalator breaks and you have to take the stairs. "By keeping only the essentials, you're able to move quickly to and from your destination without worrying too much about being a target for crime," Harris says. She also recommends downloading an offline map you can reference even without internet connection and sharing your itinerary with family members or friends who could help in a sticky situation.

New York City

It's hard to beat the allure of the twinkling lights of Times Square , award-winning Broadway shows and Lady Liberty . Melanie Musson, a travel expert with AutoInsurance.org , loves taking a solo trip to New York City , saying she doesn't even have the chance to feel lonely because the hustle and bustle of the big city keeps her sufficiently distracted.

Musson says that, while there are risks for visitors in any city, the odds of anything scary happening to you in New York are low as long as you take appropriate precautions. "New York City prioritizes tourist safety because they know they’d lose this valuable industry if visitors had frequent bad experiences," she explains, adding that you may be surprised how friendly the local residents are. "They're usually happy to help you identify the right subway line to take or bus to catch. They'll probably even give you tips on the best places to eat or things to see."

Travel tip: Musson's pre-trip tip is to check crime reports in the destination you're heading to and stay within the safe areas. "Trust your gut and get out of the area if you don't feel safe," she cautions.

American Airlines fires legal team for 'blaming' 9-year-old girl recorded in bathroom

The company backpedaled after the comments in court documents gained public attention. now, it has fired the lawyers who wrote the filing and hired new ones..

American Airlines has fired its legal team following statements that a young girl was negligent after being recorded using the bathroom by a flight attendant.

The change in counsel comes a week after the airline landed in hot water over a May 21 court filing that stated that a 9-year-old girl was recorded through her “own fault and negligence,” while using the bathroom, according to previous USA TODAY reporting. 

The company quickly backpedaled, telling USA TODAY that “outside legal counsel, retained with our insurance company made an error in this filing.” 

The airline replaced the previous legal team with Kelly Hart & Hallman, a Texas-based firm, the company told USA TODAY Wednesday.  

“We do not believe this child is at fault and we take the allegations involving a former team member very seriously," the airline said. "Our core mission is to care for people − and the foundation of that is the safety and security of our customers and team.”

The U.S. District Attorney’s Office for the State of Massachusetts says that former American Airlines flight attendant Estes Thompson had recordings of four girls − ages 7, 9, 11 and 14 − using the bathroom while he worked on their flights.

He's been charged with secretly recording the girls, the attempted sexual exploitation of children and possessing images of child sexual abuse.

Scott Lauer, Thompson's lawyer declined to comment.

Over 50 photographs of the 9-year-old girl were found on Thompson’s iCloud, Apple’s cloud service that stores and syncs data cross devices. There were also photos of her seated pre-flight and close ups of her face while she slept, according to the district attorney's office.

The girl, the same one American Airlines referred to as negligent in court records, is suing the airline.

Girls’ lawyer ‘not surprised’ American Airlines switched legal teams

Paul Llewellyn, an attorney representing the 9-year-old and another girl in the case, said that American Airlines' attorney swap was a direct result of the “intense media and public backlash surrounding the outrageous allegation.” 

“With the benefit of this new legal representation, we hope that American Airlines will now take a fresh look at the case and finally take some measure of responsibility for what happened to our client," Llewellyn said in a statement to USA TODAY Wednesday. 

 Llewellyn said his team is “very confident that a Texas jury will do the right thing and hold American Airlines responsible."

“I was both shocked and outraged,” Llewellyn told USA TODAY. “As a lawyer I understand that you have to assert possible defenses, but I cannot even imagine a world where it would ever be appropriate to blame a 9-year-old for being filmed in an airplane bathroom.”
