Orcas (Killer Whales)

Members of the Dolphin family, Orcas (also known as Killer Whales) can measure nearly ten meters in length and weigh up to six tons. These apex predators can consume up to 500 lbs. of food every day! They use echolocation to hunt, emitting a series of clicks and whistles to determine the size, shape, speed, distance and direction of their prey. Females can live to see their hundredth birthdays. Humpback Whales

You thought Orcas were big? Humpback Whales can grow up to 16 meters long! Even just their blows can measure as high as three meters. Over the past 40 years since commercial whaling was banned in the North Pacific, Humpbacks have been making a comeback in the waters surrounding Vancouver Island. These long-distance migrators show great fidelity to their favourite feeding spots along the BC coast, typically appearing during the …

Minke Whales

Visible in our waters all year long, the Minke Whale is the smallest cetacean in the North Pacific, similar in size to Orcas. These generally solitary whales avoid boats but can be seen from a distance. Although they’re sometimes mistaken for Fin Whales in certain parts of the world, Minke Whales are much smaller. Everything about them – including their small, rarely-seen blow – is a little bit mysterious and …

The sea otter is a species on the west coast that is currently building its success story! The heaviest member of the weasel family was hunted almost to the point of eradication from 1741 to 1911. It was hunted for its luxurious pelt that can have about 100,000 hairs per square centimeter. In comparison, humans have about 100,000 hair follicles over their whole head! Harbour seals, also known as the common seal, is the most widely distributed pinniped in the world. Harbour seals sport a varying range of colours; however, all have a spotted coat. Unlike the larger sea lions, harbour seals do not have pronounced hip joints and so use a flopping motion when …

Steller Sea Lions

One of the loudest and smelliest marine mammals that passengers can come across on our tours is the Steller Sea Lion. These sea lions are named after the naturalist, George Wilhelm Steller, who first described the species in 1741. Male Stellers can reach sizes of 11 feet (3.25 m) in length and weight up to 2,500 pounds. This makes them the largest species of sea lion in the world! These …

California Sea Lions

Perhaps the most comical marine mammal that passengers may encounter on our tours is the California sea lion, due to its dog-like barking sounds. Known for their intelligence, playfulness, and noisy barking; they have long been the preferred species for zoos and aquariums due to their ability to be trained. California sea lions range in colour from dark brown (males) to lighter, golden brown (females). Males can reach up to …

Dall’s Porpoise

We are lucky to be located on the Pacific coast where there are multiple different cetacean species that inhabit the local waters. One of the lesser-known cetaceans that we can see on our tours is the smaller-bodied Dall’s Porpoise. Black-and-white in colour and reaching speeds of up to 55km/h, these little porpoises look like torpedoes in the water! Dall’s Porpoises can reach a maximum length of 8 feet and can …

Harbour Porpoise

The harbour porpoise is one of the smallest marine mammals and one of the six species of porpoise in the world. There is still lots that is unknown about this elusive species. One reason for this lack of knowledge is that scientists still do not know where teenage herring go, which is a main food source that this species follows. Adult harbour porpoises reach sizes of only 1.4 to 1.9 …

Northern Elephant Seals

Possibly the strangest looking marine mammal that can be seen on our tours is the Northern elephant seal. Its strangeness stems from its giant proboscis (nose) that is found on the males.  This enlarged nose is what gives them their common name, as it looks akin to the trunk of an elephant. They use this flabby appendage to make extraordinarily loud roaring noises. This species shows huge size discrepancies between …

Thrilling Sights from our Zodiac

What our guests are saying, one of a kind experience.

We were on an a nice medium sized boat with plenty of room for everyone. We were on a flat calm sound at sunset. Sunset took four hours so we were stuck with gorgeous purple pink and orange skies the entire time. There was a pod of orcas, breaching, playing. The sounds of them spouting all around us echoed across the sound They came up close to the boat as we sat, quietly anchored. It was as though they were getting paid by central casting. An enchanting evening.

Incredible Memories! Thanks Very Much!

As a local (Victoria) tour guide, I wanted to host my 45+ year out of town friends to a Whale Watching Tour this past October 2023. The tour could not have been better and the Whale Watching crew were fantastic. We spotted seals, sea lions, a large herring ball, cormorants, eagles, and several hump back whales! I believe the hump back whale was feeding on the herring ball while we were stopped. While we watched the herring ball being dive bombed by several species of birds, a humpback whale breached about 100 feet from our tour boat. A few guests along with the whale watching company photographer caught the whale breaching both still shots and video. After the initial frenzied/happy responses from everyone aboard, guests shared both photos and videos amongst all those aboard. What an incredible day. My three long time friends and I will never forget this tour. A huge thank you to all the staff on board. I highly recommend this tour to anyone or any group wanting to experience an incredible day on the water.

Bucket list experience

This trip was just incredible and a real travel bucket list experience. We saw a whole pod of orcas in their natural habitat without disturbing them. We kept our distance in the zodiac but we were able to observe for quite some time! The t expedition leader Ian is full of knowledge of the orca’s, marine wildlife and the environment they live in. Ian made the real difference for us. His amazing and funny personality makes for a fun and entertaining afternoon. And he literally went the extra mile for us during the trip. Thank you so much team at Springtide, and Ian in particular for this bucket list experience. Regards from your Dutch friends and see you next time!

Absolutely brilliant!

Brilliant trip with great views of orcas from both the local pods. Also saw Stellars sea lions& sea otters. Katie’s knowledge was amazing – she recognised each individual orca.

Excellent adventure

The crew were friendly and professional. Great boat called the Springtide. Saw many Orcas Adult and juvenile. Kate knew many by name. On one occasion 3 Orcas approached us breaching by the boat with shouts of joy from all passengers and Crew. Also saw porpoises and Sea lions. Plus 2 Bald Eagles on way back to mariner. Overall a fabulous day on the SpringTide and highly recommend a trip out with them.

Whale watching

The trip was excellent and Katie couldn’t have done a better job narrating and telling us about the pods we saw. The captain sure navigated us right to the best locations. All in all my experience was incredible’ I would recommend this tour to everyone.

Breath taking

Absolutely amazing. We saw close to 2 dozen Orcas today. There was cute 1 year old calf. Finished the day off with sea lions and seals. Staff are amazing as well. 10/10

Marauder II Whale watching with Spring Tide

The staff members were very helpful. They were informative and put us right where the family of orcas was swimming. They identified family whale members too. We also saw many seals on the shoreline. Couldn’t have been better.

Wow. Go with these guys!

Can’t say enough about our experience with Springtide. The entire crew were young, enthusiastic, and exceptionally respectful of the environment and the wildlife. The naturalists were extremely knowledgeable, and very willing to share the professional photos they took during the trip. The boat itself was far more comfortable than I expected, and even had a clean head. Best of all, the orcas seemed to know who their good friends are, because of all the ships out there they swam up and said HI to ours! Couldn’t have had a better experience.

A really great experience

Can’t rate this too highly. The crew and naturalists were so knowledgeable and friendly. The boat is really comfortable and fast when it needs to be.

Victoria Whale Watching

Daily tours from victoria.

Victoria whale watching is a must for all visitors and locals. The nearby Juan de Fuca and Haro Straits are home to Transient or Bigg’s Killer Whales and Humpback Whales. During our peak viewing months, April to October, our success rate for spotting whales is greater than 95%.

Local marine wildlife also includes Dall’s porpoises, Harbour porpoises, Steller and California sea lions, Harbour and Elephant Seals, otters and a variety of birds such as cormorants and Bald Eagles. There is also a very good chance of sighting Minke and Gray whales.

Choose between a luxury covered vessel with heated indoor cabins, full washroom facilities, and an upper viewing deck optimal for wildlife viewing and taking in the city sights from all sides of the vessel or an adventurous, durable, and stable open air 12 passenger zodiac vessel for your Victoria whale watching tour. Every Orca Spirit whale watching tour is led by a marine naturalist whose passion and knowledge of Vancouver Island’s marine wildlife is unparalleled in the industry!

  • What To Expect
  • Commmon Questions
  • Need to Know

Victoria whale watching routes vary depending on whale sightings and weather. A typical route takes us along Victoria’s scenic waterfront to Oak Bay and the Chain Islets, where we pause to watch harbor seals and seabirds. From there, we often head east to San Juan Island, or north along the Saanich Peninsula. When whale sighting reports come in, we typically alter course towards whales within range of the boat. Round trip distance is usually 50 to 80 km.

How old do you have to be to go on a tour?

Our covered vessel tours welcome people of all ages, but the zodiacs are restricted to those that are 6 years old and above.

Can you pick me up from my hotel?

Yes! Orca Spirit Adventures offers a courtesy shuttle service for all guests. We’ll pick you up at your downtown Victoria hotel—and when your whale watching adventure is over, we’ll drop you back at the hotel, or if you prefer, anywhere in the Victoria city core.

How far in advance of my tour does the shuttle arrive?

The day before your tour we prepare our shuttle schedule and will contact you directly to provide you with a time frame in which the shuttle will get you from your hotel. Pickups are anywhere from an hour and half to thirty minutes before the scheduled tour departure time depending on the hotel location.

Is there parking near the departure dock?

Wharf Street Departures

Yes, there are pay parking lots at this office as well as street parking.

Coast Hotel & Marina by APA Departures

There is a parking lot at the corner of Quebec Street and Montreal Street about a half block from our office. As well, there is another lot at the corner of Kingston Street and Menzies Street.

What is the boat ride like?

Exciting and sometimes quite adventurous. Depending on the weather and conditions on the water, the experience can be wild and wet, smooth and dry, or any combination of the two. A typical zodiac trip experiences more ocean spray, and passengers can be splashed at some point along the route. Morning tours and those on covered vessels are usually the calmest.

What is the best time of year to see whales?

While it is possible to see whales at any time of the year, there is a peak season from May through October. During this peak season our sighting success rate is at 95-98% for viewing resident Orca pods near Victoria. In addition to Orcas, see the other wildlife that we view in the Victoria area.

Will we really see whales?

Southern Vancouver Island is the best place to see whales in the wild! There is a chance of seeing a number of different species of whales including resident and transient orcas, humpback whales, Minke whales, and gray whales in addition to other wildlife including but not limited to seals, sea lions, bald eagles, cormorants, and the Race Rocks Lighthouse resident sea otter – Ollie! All of this being said, these are wild animals that we are viewing and so there is the chance of them being a little more elusive some days, which is why we offer our Whale Guarantee. In the event of a no-whale trip, you are invited back with us for a complimentary tour. No rush, this is a life-time guarantee as we want to bring all of our guests’ whale watching dreams to life.

Where do I board the boat?

Depending on which tour you’re on, boarding will take place at one of our two locations. You’ll be notified in advance of the departure location at either:

  • Our private dock, approximately 70 yards from the Orca Spirit Adventures office in the Coast Victoria Hotel & Marina by APA, at 146 Kingston Street in Victoria, BC
  • At the Harbour Air Seaplane terminal at 950 Wharf Street in Victoria, BC
  • Wild Renfrew Guest Services at 17310 Parkinson Road, Port Renfrew BC

What should I wear?

During the summer (June through August), light summer tops and pants or shorts are fine, but it’s a good idea to bring layers such as a fleece jacket or sweater. It is surprisingly cool traveling quickly over the ocean. On cool days, evening trips and during the spring (April – May) and fall (September – October), long pants, sweaters, snug fitting hats and warm footwear is recommended.

Can I bring a camera?

Yes! If you are joining us on a zodiac tour, we recommend talking to the captain before your tour as he may recommend that you put it in the dry storage beneath your seat depending on the wind, weather, and sea conditions on the day of tour. Onboard covered vessel tours, if we experience inclement weather you can leave it in the heated indoor cabin, protected from the elements.

Are there bathrooms on the boat?

There is a bathroom onboard all covered vessel tours.

Are there snacks and beverages available for purchase on board?

Snacks and pop available for purchase for $3 on board during covered vessel tours.

What is your cancellation policy?

WHAT MIGHT YOU SEE

https://orcaspirit.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/01_WhatYouMightSee.jpg

Fantastic trip – wasn’t just about the Orcas (although they were brilliant!), we saw humpback whale, sea otter, bald eagle, sea lions, harbour and elephant seals too. Staff onboard were really knowledgeable and the backdrop of the mountains in Washington State was just spectacular. All in all, a great trip and sensitively done.

I have just returned from Vancouver and the highlight seeing at least 4 pods of Killer Whales, seals and sea lions after sailing out from Victoria Harbour. We had onboard a very knowledgeable naturalist who answered all questions with gushing enthusiasm and nothing was too much trouble. Fabulous.

This experience was definitely on my bucket list and it did not disappoint. We went with Captain Mick on a zodiac boat. He was very educative and funny. We were lucky enough to spot a mom Humpback whale and her calf and 2 orca families. Next to that we saw seals. The zodiac experience made it so much more fun!

What to expect on a whale watching tour in Victoria BC: Our experience

When it comes to whale watching, there’s no better spot than Victoria BC. With its stunning coastline and abundant wildlife, this area is sure to provide a memorable experience for any nature lover.

whale tours in victoria bc

Plus, the wide array of tour operators offer plenty of options for all kinds of travelers, from novice to experienced whale watchers. So when I booked my tour, I didn’t know what to expect, but I absolutely LOVED it!

I initially chose an afternoon tour in a covered boat or catamaran, but due to some cancelations, I later had to join a sunset zodiac tour! Both the whale watching tours departed from Victoria’s scenic inner harbor (downtown Victoria).

whale tours in victoria bc

Our tour was set for 3 hours, but we ended up spending 4 hours at sea sailing all the way to the San Juan Islands. Prior to the excursion, all the passengers (there were 5 of us) had to suit up (flotation suits) and were briefed on safety, and tour-related inputs were provided.

First half hour or so, we enjoyed the sailing and it was AMAZING – the speed, the wind, and the VIEWS ~ Once the captain spotted some areas, he slowed down and we all patiently waited….

During this time the captain also shared details about whales and other marine life….he pointed whenever whales were sighted!

Before we left, we had a delightful show of 25 minutes where humpback whales were spouting and playing – what a beautiful sight it was!

After this, we reached the inner harbor and were amazed to see the Parliament Building all lit up in its glory ~ it was a wonderful welcome back 🙂

Travel Tips for Victoria BC: FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions

How to choose a whale-watching company that works for you and your schedule?

For the best and most responsible whale-watching experience in Victoria BC, you’ll want to head out on a tour with an experienced operator. All the tours listed in this guide will have a certified naturalist or marine biologist on board.

When choosing a tour, pay attention to the vessel used – some prefer covered boats with washrooms, drink options, and big decks to admire the sea and the whales. But some prefer adventure on a cool zodiac boat with full floatation suits.

Floatation suits at the Victoria Harbour

Although zodiacs are fun, their maximum passenger capacity is 12, and it has some limitations (mobility, people with back issues, etc.).

Also check the time of the tour, daytime is great, but sunset is magical!

Most tour operators also provide a whale sighting guarantee on their expeditions.

Excursions last 3 to 4 hours, and some include marine wildlife watching tours as well.

whale tours in victoria bc

Tours typically depart from the Inner Harbor, Sidney, Oak Bay Marina, and Fisherman’s Wharf and take visitors into the Strait of Juan de Fuca or Haro Strait.

Popular tour companies include Five Star Whale Watching, Prince of Wales Whale Watching, SpringTide Whale Watching & Eco Tours, and Eagle Wing Tours. Many operators offer gift certificates as well, which is a great way to support local businesses and guides.

When is the best time for whale watching in Victoria BC?

Whale-watching season is from June through October. This is the time when chances of sighting whales are over 95% but marine wildlife can be spotted in the area year-round.

What types of whales are found in Victoria?

The most common type of whale you’ll encounter on a tour is the humpback, which can grow up to 50 feet in length and weigh over 40 tons. Other species that are frequently seen include grey whales, minke whales, and killer whales (or orcas). Both transient and resident orcas are found here.

There’s also an abundance of other marine life to view, from harbor and elephant seals, and marine birds such as cormorants and bald eagles to seabirds and sea lions.

Safety: What to wear on a whale-watching tour

Safety should always be a top priority when whale watching in Victoria BC. Be sure to wear appropriate clothing for the weather conditions and make sure you have enough snacks and water on board.

If you’re traveling with children, make sure they are wearing life jackets at all times and are supervised by an adult. It’s also important to stay a safe distance away from the whales and follow any instructions given by the tour guide.

When it comes to packing for a whale-watching tour, you should always bring along a few essentials.

  • Sunscreen is essential during the summer months, so be sure to apply plenty before you head out.
  • You should also bring a hat, sunglasses, and a sweater in case it gets cold out on the water.
  • Binoculars are great for spotting marine wildlife from far away, and
  • don’t forget to pack your camera so that you can capture your experience forever.

All in all, whale watching tours in Victoria BC are an incredible way to connect with the ocean and its inhabitants. These tours give visitors a chance to observe amazing animals in their natural environment, while also providing an educational and memorable experience.

No matter which tour you decide to take, you’re sure to have a unique and memorable experience in Victoria BC.

From the majestic humpback whales to playful sea lions, you never know what amazing wildlife you’ll encounter on a whale-watching tour.

So if you’re looking for an adventure that will stay with you for years to come, book your trip today and get ready for the experience of a lifetime!

After all, how many cities can get you splashed by the thundering clap of a humpback whale jump?

Prince of Whales: Best Half-Day Whale Watching Tour

Vessel: Partially-enclosed Catamaran | Dates: Mar 29 – Nov 6

Our best Victoria whale watching tour overall is this 3+ hour fully-guided adventure aboard the Salish Sea Eclipse .

This purpose-built high-speed, luxury, custom-built catamaran carries up to 95 passengers in its warm and dry cabin.

This makes it the preferred Victoria whale tour for families and seniors .

The knowledgeable Prince of Whales crew also ensures you’ll be aboard a floating classroom .

Springtide: Cheapest Whale Watching Tour in Victoria

Vessel: Zodiac | Dates: Year round

If you’re traveling to Victoria on a budget, the cheapest Victoria whale tour rings in at “just” $139.00.

Of course, the advantage of these small zodiac boats is that you can get closer to the whales than with catamarans.

Do expect however to have a bit of a bumpier, wetter ride – though adrenaline-junkies will love this.

Even better? There are 5 daily departures so you’re bound to find the right time for you.

Prince of Whales: Best Sunset Whale Watching Tour in Victoria

Vessel: Partially-enclosed Catamaran | Dates: May-Oct

This top Victoria whale watching tour offers the same great experience as the half-day tour – but with a scenic twist .

Sure, on your 4-hour Victoria killer whale tour aboard the Salish Sea Eclipse, you’ll encounter the same fantastic marine mammals: orcas, humpbacks, greys and much more.

The difference? You’ll do so with a beautiful red-skied backdrop . A favourite with photographers , this orca tour of Victoria proves that the golden hour adds magic to an already epic experience.

5 Star Whales: Best Orca Tour in Victoria for Education

Vessel: Partially-enclosed Catamaran | Dates: Year round

The advantages of this Victoria whale watching tour are twofold: one, you get two expert naturalists on board that’ll teach you all about the local ecosystem and how whales fit into it.

Two, you’ve got a much smaller boat which means smaller crowds than usual .

Finally, at $158.00 I think this has best value of all the covered boats , making it a great option.

Eagle Wing: Best Victoria Killer Whale Tour for Wildlife

Vessel: Open-air Zodiac | Dates: Year Round

Departing right from Fisherman’s Wharf in Victoria, this killer whale tour is 30 minutes longer than average .

This means you’ll get plenty of time to explore extra marine life , be it bald eagles, sealions, seals, and much more.

The semi-covered catamaran is also the coolest boat in the Victoria whale watching fleet , if that counts for anything.

Prince of Whales: Best Zodiac Whale Tour in Victoria

These heart-pounding whale tours of Victoria are a bit of a hat-holder, and I’m telling you from experience.

First, you’ll zip up your Mustang suit and jump aboard a purpose-built zodiac . Then, once the captain opens up the Zodiac’s twin 300hp Mercury outboards , it’s time to let her rip!

Now, you’re on the hunt for orcas and humpbacks and other once-in-a-lifetime wildlife – as you feel the refreshing sea spray cool your face – at speeds of up to 55 km/h !

This is the only year-round Victoria whale watching tour , so if you’re visiting Victoria in winter , this is your jam.

Sure, it’s not uncommon to find Victoria whale watching discounts online.

As I mentioned in my other post, whale watching in Victoria is a once-in-a-lifetime experience: it can’t be put on sale like a sweater.

I’ve been running this site for seven years now, and Victoria orca tour prices go up every year , so it’ll never be cheaper than now!

🐳 This is my favourite whale watching tour in Victoria, BC!

Best Time of Year for Whale Watching in Victoria BC: Victoria Whale Watching Season

The best time of year for whale watching in Victoria is from late April to early October.

During this time, you have the highest chance of seeing Orcas, Humpback Whales, and other types of whales that frequent the waters around Vancouver Island.

Keep in mind that the peak season for whale watching is from July to September.

If you want to avoid the crowds, try booking a tour during shoulder season (April-May or October).

Three orca whales swimming in the Pacific Ocean in front of Vancouver Island and Victoria

Best Time to See Orcas in Victoria, BC

If your main goal is to see Orcas (also known as Killer Whales), the best time to go whale watching in Victoria is from July to September.

This is when the Orca pods are most active in the waters around Vancouver Island.

Keep in mind that seeing Orcas is never guaranteed, even during peak season.

However, your chances are much higher during this time of year.

Types of Whales in Victoria, British Columbia

There are a few different types of whales that you might see on a whale watching tour in Victoria, BC.

The most common whales are Orcas, Humpback Whales, and Minke Whales.

You might also see Harbour Porpoises, Dall’s Porpoises, and Pacific White-sided Dolphins.

On top of these marine mammals, you may spot northern elephant seals, California sea lions, steller sea lions, and sea otters!

Here’s a brief overview of each type of whale:

Orcas : Orcas are the largest member of the dolphin family. They are also known as Killer Whales. Orcas are black and white, with a distinctive dorsal fin. Males can reach up to 32 feet long, while females are typically around 28 feet long.

Humpback Whales: Humpback Whales are easily recognizable thanks to their long pectoral fins and distinctive hump. They are known for their acrobatic breaching behavior. Humpback Whales are typically around 52 feet long.

Minke Whales : Minke Whales are the smallest type of baleen whale. They are dark gray or black with white patches. Male Minke Whales can reach up to 30 feet long, while females are typically around 27 feet long.

How to See Whales in Victoria

By boat tour.

The best way to see whales in Victoria is by boat tour.

There are two different types of boat tours to choose from: inflatable zodiac boats and covered boats.

Zodiac Boat Tours: Zodiac boat tours are small, inflatable boats that can hold up to 12 people. These tours are great for those who want a more intimate and personal experience.

Covered Boat Tours: Covered boat tours are larger boats that can hold up to 60 people. These tours are great for those who want to see whales without getting wet. It’s also a bit more stable to prevent sea sickness.

Both types of boat tours offer the opportunity to see whales up close.

However, covered boat tours are more expensive and tend to be less intimate than zodiac boat tours.

By Airplane

Airplane tours offer a unique perspective of the whales and their habitat.

You’ll be able to see more whales on an airplane tour than you would on a boat tour.

However, airplane tours are more expensive than boat tours.

You won’t get nearly as close to the whales, since you’ll be soaring high above them.

Kayak tours are a great way to see whales up close and personal.

However, these tours are only for experienced kayakers.

If you’re not comfortable kayaking in the ocean, it’s best to book a different type of tour.

I’m not an experienced kayaker, so this isn’t my cup of tea at all.

🚣‍♀️ I recommend this inflatable kayak

The ferry from Vancouver to Victoria isn’t guaranteed to see whales, but if you’re lucky, you might spot a whale or two from the ferry.

However, keep in mind that you won’t be able to get close enough for a good look.

This is more of a passive way to see whales since you’re not actively looking for them.

If you don’t want to spend the money on a tour, you can try to see whales from shore.

The best place to do this is at Race Rocks Lighthouse.

This is a popular spot for whale watching since it’s known as a gathering place for orcas.

Keep in mind that you’re not likely to see whales from shore unless you’re at a popular spot like Race Rocks Lighthouse.

Some people do manage to get glimpses from a Vancouver Island VRBO homestay on quiet mornings.

It’s more down to luck than anything else!

Victoria Whale Watching Tour Companies

There are many tour companies that offer whale watching tours in Victoria.

Here are some of the most popular tour companies:

  • Prince of Whales
  • Orca Spirit Adventures

These companies all offer similar products in terms of the type of boats and their success ratings for seeing whales, especially orcas. Most have a success rating of over 80 or 90%.

They have zodiac and covered boat tour options.

I’ve included a variety of Victoria whale watching tour companies in this list to show you the range of options for spotting wild whales in BC.

My favourite tour company is Prince of Whales – not just for their fun name.

They also run excellent whale watching tour from Vancouver.

Their plethora of timing options makes it really easy to book a tour. And their whale-sighting guarantee means that you can return for free if you don’t manage to spot any whales on your tour!

11 Best Whale Watching Tours Victoria, BC

Orca whale jumping out of the water in front of a whale watching tour in Victoria BC

1. Half-Day Whale Watching Adventure From Victoria by Prince of Whales

This is one of the most amazing whale watching experiences you can have in British Columbia. You’ll be aboard a small, semi-covered vessel that was specifically built for these types of trips.

The boat leaves from Fisherman’s Wharf in downtown Victoria.

You’ll head out in a semi-covered boat with a heated indoor cabin, so even on chilly mornings you can stay dry and warm.

The boat leaves through the Haro Strait, then follows the Strait of Juan de Fuca, ultimately reaching the Salish Sea. Along the way you can spot orcas, humpbacks, and minke whales as your marine naturalist guides help you learn more about these gentle giants.

The guides clearly love their job, radiating energy as they help you spot wild whales throughout the journey.

“We’ve tried whale watching in Monterey California and it sucked due to inexperienced crew and everyone onboard got sea sick – but with this crew, everything was awesome” — Aditya (see more  reviews )

Beyond the whales, you’ll also get the opportunity to see seals and bald eagles enjoying the sea alongside Vancouver Island.

After three hours, you’ll be sad to leave the sea for land again, but you’ll have some incredible pictures of whales to show off to your friends and family back home.

Between the breathtaking scenery of the Salish Sea and the incredible whale sightings, this is easily one of the best things to do in Victoria, BC.

  • Highlights : Semi-covered boat, heated cabin, orcas and humpbacks, bald eagles
  • Starting point: Wharf Street
  • Duration : 4 hours

2. Sunset Whale Watching Adventure From Victoria by Prince of Whales

If you’re looking for an unforgettable whale watching experience, look no further than Prince of Whales. They offer several different whale watching tours, but the sunset tour is definitely a photographer’s dream.

The tour begins in downtown Victoria and heads out into the Strait of Juan de Fuca in search of orcas, humpback whales, and sea lions.

Unlike their other tours on semi-covered boats or inflatable zodiac boats, this sunset cruise takes place on a catamaran. With three separate viewing platforms and less water disruption, this sailing vessel offers more opportunities to get close to the whales for the perfect photo op.

However, catamarans can be more at the mercy of the water, so definitely take a sea sickness pill before you hop aboard!

As marine mammals like whales are most playful at sunrise and sunset, this is the best time of day to see them.

Not to mention, the views of Vancouver Island and the Olympic Mountains as the sun sets are truly incredible.

“It was just amazing! Words can’t do the justice to this experience.” — Shikha (see more  reviews )

If you’re too busy enjoying the views in real time, don’t worry! The marine naturalist guides are also snapping photos of the whales as you sail, which they offer to you at no extra cost.

It’s just one of the many ways that the Prince of Whales guides go above and beyond to ensure you have the best experience.

After three hours on the water, you’ll be treated to a complimentary beverage as you sail back into downtown Victoria.

If you’re looking for an amazing evening activity and the chance to spot the ocean’s giants, you’ll love this whale watching tour in Victoria, BC!

  • Highlights : Sunset, catamaran, 3 viewing decks, orcas and humpbacks, photography
  • Duration : 3 hours
  • Price : $166

3. From Vancouver: Victoria Whale Watching Adventure by Harbour Seaplanes & Orca Spirit Adventures

Get up close and personal with orcas on this whale watching adventure from Vancouver to Victoria. You’ll take a seaplane ride over the Gulf Islands , then spend three hours on a whale watching tour before returning back to Vancouver.

You’ll meet at the Vancouver Seaplane Terminal in downtown Vancouver, then board your seaplane for the short flight to Victoria. As you fly, you’ll have incredible views of the Pacific Northwest and the Gulf Islands.

Once you land in Victoria, you’ll board an Orca Spirit Adventures vessel for your three hour whale watching tour.

This is the only company in Victoria that is allowed to go into the protected waters of the Southern Resident Killer Whales.

“The flight over to Victoria and back was amazing. We had about 3 hours in Victoria which was perfect for a walk about and lunch.” — Jennifer (see more  reviews )

While orcas are the focus of this tour, you also may spot some humpback whales, sea otters, and seals!

Don’t forget to look back at the land for beautiful views of Southern Vancouver Island.

I love this tour’s offer of a flight and the chance to see a unique pod of whales that call Vancouver Island home. It’s perfect for people visiting Vancouver for a week who don’t have time to explore Vancouver Island.

You’ll get the best of both worlds – sea and sky – on this epic whale watching tour!

  • Highlights : Seaplane, orcas, Gulf Islands, views of Southern Vancouver Island
  • Starting point: Fisherman’s Wharf
  • Duration : 8 hours
  • Price : $539

4. Zodiac Whale Watching Adventure From Victoria by Prince of Whales

The Prince of Whales Zodiac Whale Watching Adventure is a must-do for any whale watching enthusiast visiting Victoria, BC.

This 3 hour tour takes you out into the rolling waves in a zodiac speedboat, providing an up-close and personal experience with humpbacks, minke, and orcas.

You’ll learn about their life cycle and migration patterns as the crew goes the extra mile – literally – to ensure you spot these wild giants.

“We have gone on a zodiac with another company but this surpassed that experience. We saw more whales due to the locations traveled to and patience of the crew. ” — Maria (see more  reviews )

Zodiac tours do mean you’ll get wet!

While you’ll be provided with an all-weather exposure floatation suit, you should still expect to wear clothes that can get damp underneath.

Although the inflatable boat is buoyant even on rough seas, it can get a bit rocky. I recommend taking a seasickness pill before you get on the boat to ensure you spend your time enjoying the whales and not puking on top of them!

This small boat seats 12 passengers, which means you won’t be crowded around the edges unable to get views of the whales.

Get ready to cruise the rolling waves of the Strait of Juan de Fuca and to get up close to wild whales on this tour!

  • Highlights : Orcas and humpbacks, zodiac boat, floatation suit, small groups
  • Price : $147

Is it better to do whale watching in Vancouver or Victoria?

There is no wrong answer to this question, as both Vancouver and Victoria offer incredible whale watching experiences. However, there are some key differences between the two cities that you should keep in mind when making your decision.

In Vancouver, whale watching tours have to travel farther to spot whales, so you’ll spend more time commuting to them. However, they are often more accessible on a vacation in BC.

Whale watching tours in Victoria, BC, have a higher chance of spotting orcas that live in Vancouver Island’s waters. But the tours have fewer departure times.

Both Vancouver and Victoria offer a variety of whale watching tour options, so it’s important to do your research before booking one. The best way to find the perfect tour for you is to read reviews and compare prices.

No matter which city you choose, you’re sure to have an unforgettable experience whale watching in BC !

🚑  Should I buy Canada travel insurance?

100% YES!  — Canada has “free” healthcare but it’s only for citizens! Foreigners visiting need travel insurance in case anything happens on their visit. I recommend World Nomads – starting at just $5 a day!

💧 Can you drink the water in Canada?

Yes  — In all major cities in Canada, you can drink the tap water. There are very few, rural areas that you can’t. However, you should never drink river or lake water anywhere in the country! I recommend a Brita Water Bottle for long hikes and backcountry camping to stay safe and hydrated.

🚙💨  Is it safe to rent a car in Canada?

Yes  — Renting a car is a necessity in most of Canada! If you want to go on road trips or adventures outside of the major cities, you’ll need to rent a car. ( Read more )

📲  Will my phone work in Canada?

Maybe  — Some American companies work in Canada, but many will not. If your phone doesn’t work in Canada, I recommend getting a Canadian SIM card so you can get around and stay in contact with loved ones. We don’t have a lot of free WIFI in Canada, so you’ll need your phone for maps.

🏩  What’s the best way to book my Canada accommodations?

My go-to for Canadian hotels is Booking.com . For hostels, I use Hostel World . If you want a home-y feeling, check out VRBO (which is cheaper and safer than Airbnb).

Or get free accommodations with Trusted Housesitters!

✈️  What’s the best site to buy Canada flights?

For finding cheap Canadian flights, I recommend  Skyscanner .

🎫  Do I need a visa for Canada?

Likely Not  — US, UK, and EU passport holders don’t need Canadian visas. However, some other countries do ( check here! ). And if you plan to stay for more than 4 weeks (an average tourist visa length), you will need to look into visas to live in Canada.

Whale viewing guidelines

Please understand that when we’re viewing the whales and other marine wildlife we’re guests in their home. It’s our responsibility to follow a strict set of viewing guidelines to respect their natural life processes. Yes, the whales can get close occasionally because they don’t know the rules, but they can also be far away in some instances.

  • We’re asked to maintain 200 metres in Canadian waters / 200 yards in American waters from Bigg’s killer whales; 100 metres for baleen whales such as humpback, minke and grey whales. We don’t view the endangered southern resident killer whales.
  • If the whales are along the San Juan Island shoreline then we maintain either 1/4 mile or 1/2 mile around Lime Kiln Park.
  • There are two vessel no-go zones near Pender and Saturna Islands.
  • For all other islands in the Salish Sea (over 419 of them!) we maintain at least 200 metres (220 yards) if whales are inshore of us.
  • Most of the time, the whales are out far enough from shore for us to view them at the minimum regulatory distances.
  • Bring a good camera with a telephoto lens!

Top Victoria Whale Watching Tour Companies

There are quite a few whale watching tour companies that offer marine wildlife tours and whale watching from Victoria.

Popular whale watching companies in Victoria are :

  • Prince of Whales – *most popular*
  • Orca Spirit Adventures
  • Spring Tide
  • Eagle Wing – *our favourite*

Chart of the Best Whale Watching companies in Victoria BC amenities.

Whale watching tours from Victoria typically leave from downtown Victoria and the Inner Harbor area. These companies all have great success rate in finding wild whales, and orcas in the coastal waters, over 80 to 95% of the time.

They know the best places to look. On our tour we could hear the captain communicating with other boats & course correct to where they were more likely to be seen.

Tips & thing to consider

  • You aren’t going to be right beside the whales – Companies follow the Pacific Whale Watch Association guidelines which state they must stay a minimum of 100 metres from humpback whales and 200 metres from killer whales. This is for the health & safety of the whales.
  • Whales are wild and unpredictable – There’s no guarantee you will see whales of a certain species, a certain number of whales, or even whales at all on your trip. We found the captains do work hard to find whales for you, and companies do provide whale sighting guarantees. So if you don’t see any whales, you can take another trip for free.
  • It’s quite a long boat ride to get out to where the whales are usually spotted – For us, it was almost 90 minutes, so don’t expect to see whales right away.
  • Dress warmly & in layers – We knew this ahead of, so we dressed accordingly, but it does get cold on the water, even on sunny days. Also bring sunglasses (lots of glare from the ocean) and a hat that won’t blow off your head easily. Some companies do provide mitts & toques you can borrow.

1. Eagle Wing Victoria Whale & Wildlife Cruise (Wheelchair Accessible)

Mom and daughter in front of Eagle Wing Whale Watching Tour boat, smiling after tour.

⭐️  RATING:  5/5 Stars | ⏳  TOUR LENGTH:   3.5 – 4 hours | ✅  Book it!

Our number one pick is the Eagle Wing whale & wildlife cruise from Victoria, BC , and is the most recent whale watching tour we’ve taken as a family.

What sold us on Eagle Wing were their semi-covered boat, with max 50 people.

We were highly impressed with the engaged guides, who interacted with my daughter & I one on one, and had interesting info and stories to share. Miss S was excited to tell everyone that the guides had recently witnessed a whale kill a seal and it had a sweet cucumber smell.

Race Rocks and seeing the sea lion colony was also really interesting. Their bark is so distinctive, and seeing them that close makes you realize how huge they are, just basking on the rocks.

The up front seating had amazing almost 360° views of not only sealife, but the Olympic Mountains, & San Juan Islands were a highlight.

They went out of their way to find whales and we were even out there for extra time. Sadly we didn’t see whales this time, but will head out again this year with our whale guarantee (no expiry date). We could have gone again last trip, but decided to make another fun day of it this year.

Takaya the wolf mural on Discovery Island with sea lions lounging on rocks.

  • This cruise is enjoyable for everyone, as some boats are wheelchair accessible
  • Semi-covered boats have washrooms, a place to warm up & extra gloves & hats
  • Excellent guides who interacted one on one with us
  • Family oriented, perfect for families of all ages
  • Boat had plenty of viewing places, never felt too crowded
  • Tour was extended to find whales
  • Whale guarantee – no expiry date & confirmed seating on next trip
  • Larger group size
  • Whale guarantee not specific to a certain whale species (hey it’s nature, nobody can control what you see, but some people get mad if they don’t see orcas).

LOCAL TIP: They give you a Lanyard when you check in that can give you 10% off at certain vendors in Fisherman’s Wharf. They did take ours as we boarded the boat, so go a little early if you want to take advantage of the discount for some food or ice cream.

Whale watching really is one of the best things to do in Victoria, Canada.

BEST FOR: Everyone – from younger kids to older adults!

Leaves from: Fisherman’s Wharf Downtown.

Price : $189 Adult | $157 Youth | Child $136

2. Zodiac Whale Watching Adventure by Prince of Whales

Prince of Whales Zodiac boat and orca whale

⭐️  RATING:  5/5 Stars | ⏳  TOUR LENGTH:   3 hours | ✅  Book it!

Cruise the rolling waves of Haro Strait into the Strait of Juan de Fuca aboard a zodiac speedboat. A highlight for teenagers, and those who like a bit of speed.

🐳 Taking this 3 hour Zodiac Whale Watching Tour by Prince of Whales is a must for whale watching, adventure seekers.

You can’t miss the bright yellow boats of the Prince of Whales dotting the Inner Harbor and its wharfs.

Last time I took the zodiac boat it was with them, and we got to see humpbacks and orcas. The sea otters hiding in the kelp bed were the cutest. Also following orca group T123 around and watching their swim patterns and eating behaviors was incredibly interesting. We even got a much needed hot chocolate back at the base afterwards.

We don’t recommend a zodiac boat for kids under 8 years and they do require your child to be at least 6 years old and 4ft (120cm) tall.

LOCAL TIP: The front seat is the bounciest. Sit in the middle or back seats for a smoother ride.

  • Adventurous, sea level views of whales & other marine life
  • They provide all weather flotation suits & gear to keep you cozy and warm.
  • Small group sizes
  • Year round whale sighting guarantee
  • A lot cooler on the water, no place to warm up
  • Not suitable for families with young kids
  • Bumpier ride, especially if water is choppy

Just remember to wear layers underneath the floatation suit they give you, and warm socks / footwear, as it’s much cooler right on the water than you would think.

LOCAL TIP: We also recommend bringing a waterproof cover for any electronics. As well as your own snacks & water as they don’t provide it on their zodiac tours.

BEST FOR: Families with Teens & Adventurous folk

Leaves from: Lower causeway, Inner Harbour, 812 Wharf St

Price: Adults & Youth $204

Tour Size: Up to 12 passengers

3. Prince of Whales Sunset Whale Watching Adventure

⭐️  RATING:  5/5 Stars | ⏳  TOUR LENGTH: 3+ hours | ✅  Book it!

See the stunning coastal scenery from a perspective many people miss. We think this catameran, sunset whale watching tour from Victoria is the perfect combination of whales & gorgeous sunsets making for a great date night.

With their 3 large viewing areas on the catameran, we found there was always somewhere we could get a good view out on the Juan de Fuca Strait, including bald eagles soaring overhead, and orca whales swimming and breaching. Even on a boat with more people.

Warm drinks & time inside were needed, as we noticed it did get a lot cooler outside once the sun started to set.

You can catch the bright yellow Catameran downtown, in the Inner Harbour.

Combine the best of both worlds with an amazing sea and sky tour . Take a scenic seaplane flight from Vancouver, then hop aboard your choice of a Victoria whale watching cruise.

VICTORIA WHALE WATCHING TIPS & INFO

Types of whales off vancouver island.

These are a few of the most common whales you can see on a whale watching tour in Victoria, BC. Including:

  • Orcas : Also known as Killer Whales. These majestic beauties are black and white with a large dorsal fin. You can also often see them feeding off the islands, and traveling with their young, on the ferry ride between Vancouver and Victoria.
  • Minke Whales : Are the smallest of the baleen whales. They are dark grey / black with white patches on their bodies.
  • Humpback Whales : Largest of the whales, they can reach up to 52 feet long. You can ID them with their distinct hump, and long fins.

Other sea life that can be seen on a Victoria whale watching tour can include California Sea Lions and Elephant Sea Lions, Harbour Seals and Porpoises, Dall’s Porpoise, Pacific White-sided Dolphins, and Sea Otters.

Look to the skies for bald eagles and other west coast marine birds. As you cruise the southern tip of Vancouver Island.

Victoria, BC sunset and whales in the distance.

Types of Whale Watching Tours

The best and easiest way to see whales is to take zodiac or covered boat whale-watching tours from Victoria, BC Canada.

As mentioned earlier, there a few things to consider when choosing which type of boat.

Zodiac Boat Tour

Choose a zodiac boat tour if you want a smaller group, have older kids (6+ years) or don’t mind being more exposed to wind, and water. It gives you a more unique and personal feel being at ocean level.

These small inflatable boats hold up to 12 People and tend to be less expensive.

Covered Boat Tour

Choose a covered boat tour, if you prefer a warm place to escape the elements, don’t mind a larger group, or have younger kids you need to keep an eye on. They also have toilets, which is handy.

If you get seasick, a larger catameran boat is the better option, as it will be more stable.

Both types of boats allow you to get close to whales. There are rules in place for the safety and protection of the whales as to how close the boats can get, and the tour operators follow these carefully.

A plane or helicopter tour can potentially allow you to see more whales, as you can cover more area of the sea.

This would provide a unique perspective, of both Vancouver Island and marine wildlife. However you won’t get as close.

If you are an experienced kayaker, renting a kayak, and heading out on the ocean, is a great way to see whales up close at their level. But they can be quite far from shore.

Definitely not for beginners, or those without any kayaking experience.

By Ferry

I love the BC ferry ride from Victoria to Vancouver and it’s my favorite way to see orcas.

There’s no guarantee, but they can often be seen as the ferry passes between the Gulf Islands.

There are times when you can see pods of Orcas or Humpback Whales, and other marine mammals from the shore.

The breakwater is a great place to walk, and often you can see harbour porpoises in the distance.

I’ve even seen whales from Willows Beach (one of our favourite parks / beaches in Victoria ) on occasion.

Check out Race Rocks Lighthouse, as Orcas sometimes gather around here, and you can often see sea lions on the rocks.

Wolf Mural and Sea Lions on a rock. Victoria Whale Watching Tours.

What to Wear Whale Watching

Being out the water you will be exposed to the elements; wind, sun, rain, spray from the water. It’s best to wear layers. Wear a sweater, wind / waterproof jacket, warm socks, and appropriate closed toe footwear (no flip flops!).

We wore a fleece sweater under our light rain jacket with a hood and long pants. Our hands got a little cold so we borrowed their mitts, but were fine otherwise in May.

Even on sunny summer days, it can be cool on the water.

If taking a Zodiac Tour, the company usually provide survival suits for you to wear. In open boats, tours often also provide jackets and rain pants. Check to see what your tour will provide.

Make sure to bring a plastic bag or other waterproof case to keep your camera safe and dry.

When is the best time to see whales in Victoria?

The best time to see whales in Victoria is from the end of April through to October. During the peak season you have up to a 95% chance of seeing resident & tranisent Orcas, and humpback whales. However you can see whales year round. Whales are active throughout the day, so morning, or afternoon you have an equal chance of viewing these majestic mammals, as well as other wildlife.

Is Whale Watching worth it in Victoria, BC?

Yes, whale watching in Victoria, BC is worth it. Seeing these awe inspiring creatures up close is one of the most memorable, and best things to do in Victoria in winter or anytime. . The southern tip of Vancouver Island is one of the best places in the world to see orcas, humpbacks and other marine wildlife like sea lions, seals, and porpoises.
