West Alexander Pedestrian and Cycling Corridor

Connecting mcphillips street to sherbrook street.

This project is now complete.

In 2018 the remaining paving of the roadway, and construction of the bi-directional bicycle lane along McDermot Avenue from Arlington Street to Furby Street will be completed. In addition to a dedicated bike lane, the project includes enhanced street crossings for pedestrians at select intersections and street resurfacing. McDermot Avenue will also permanently switch to one-way eastbound from Arlington Street to Sherbrook Street. View the design .

Project Updates

December 2017.

Work has ceased for the 2017 construction season and will resume in Spring of 2018 to complete the paving of the roadway and construction of the bike lane on McDermot Avenue.

August 2017

Construction of the West Alexander Pedestrian and Cycling Corridor and associated street work commenced on Monday, August 28. McDermot Avenue has been switched to one-way eastbound from Arlington Street to Sherbrook Street for construction and will remain a one-way street after construction. Please see the routing map for suggestions on how to get to area destinations.

Access to area businesses and the Health Sciences Centre will be maintained as much as possible throughout construction. Short term private approach closures may be required to facilitate construction and will be reviewed with residents/businesses prior to the construction taking place. Parking will be restricted on McDermot Avenue during construction. For more information please see the August construction notice .

Bi-directional Bike Lane

Starting in August 2017 work will begin to resurface McDermot Avenue from Arlington Street to Furby Street, adding a two-way protected bike lane. As part of this work McDermot Avenue will permanently switch to one-way eastbound along this segment. For more information, please see the June construction notice .

The above turning restrictions will be implemented throughout construction and will remain in place following project completion

How do I access the Health Sciences Centre now that McDermot Avenue is a one-way street?

Vehicles travelling southbound on Arlington Street will no longer be able to turn left onto McDermot Avenue (this turning restriction will be implemented part way through project construction). To access HSC:

• Turn left at William Avenue or Bannatyne Avenue
• Turn right onto Tecumseh Street
• Turn left onto McDermot Avenue

Note that you cannot turn left at Notre Dame Avenue during peak hours. Vehicles travelling northbound on Arlington Street will still be able to turn right onto McDermot Avenue.

Vehicles travelling eastbound on McDermot Avenue from McPhillips Street will be required to turn left or right at Arlington Street (this access restriction will be implemented part way through project construction). To access HSC:

• Turn left at Arlington Street
• Turn right at Bannatyne Avenue
• Turn right at Arlington Street
• Turn left at Winnipeg Avenue
• Turn left onto Tecumseh Street
• Turn right onto McDermot Avenue

Vehicles travelling southbound on Sherbrook Street will no longer be able to turn right onto McDermot Avenue. To access HSC:

• Turn right onto Notre Dame Avenue
• Turn right onto Pearl Street, Emily Street or Tecumseh Street.
• You may also turn right onto William Avenue before Sherbrook Street and access McDermot Avenue via Tecumseh Street.

Vehicles travelling northbound on Sherbrook Street will no longer be able to turn left onto McDermot Avenue. To access HSC:

• Turn left at Notre Dame Avenue

In November 2011, City of Winnipeg Council approved the Transportation Master Plan (TMP). A key goal of the TMP is to expand the range of travel options that are available to residents, workers, and visitors, as well as to ensure that people are not dependent on one single mode of transportation. The TMP also calls for the development of the Pedestrian and Cycling Strategies.

In 2015, City Council approved the Winnipeg Pedestrian and Cycling Strategies , which provide a long-range policy framework for active modes of transportation for the next 20 years.

The 2015 Pedestrian and Cycling Action plan was adopted by Council in May 2015, where this study was approved. Feedback received during this process was incorporated into preferred design option, which includes a two-way protected bike lane McDermot Avenue between Arlington Street and Furby Street.

In addition to McDermot Avenue becoming a one-way street eastbound between Arlington Street and Sherbrook Street, the following changes will be in place during construction and after construction is complete:

• Vehicles travelling southbound on Arlington Street will no longer be able to turn left onto McDermot Avenue (this turning restriction will be implemented part way through project construction).
• Vehicles travelling eastbound on McDermot Avenue from McPhillips Street will be required to turn left or right at Arlington Street (this access restriction will be implemented part way through project construction).
• Vehicles travelling southbound on Sherbrook Street will no longer be able to turn right onto McDermot Avenue.
• Vehicles travelling northbound on Sherbrook Street will no longer be able to turn left onto McDermot Avenue.

Please see the suggested routing map for suggestions on how to get to area destinations.

• This design best accommodates the inclusion of all modes of transportation (pedestrians, a wide range of cyclists, transit users and motorists).
• Separated bike lane is safer for cyclists and is the most desired facility type.
• The south side has fewer private approaches.
• The Emily Street and McDermot Avenue intersection will be raised to improve pedestrian crossings and visibility.
• The wider bike lane has enough room for cyclists to pass each other.
• The wider bike lane provides ease of maintenance (clearing of debris, leaves, snow and sand).
• The majority of feedback received supported this option.
• The majority of stakeholder feedback indicated the importance of maintaining parking, loading and access to approaches on the north side of McDermot Avenue.

Note that green paint is used to indicate areas of potential conflict where drivers and cyclists cross paths. The paint serves to remind both drivers and cyclists to be mindful of each other.

For drivers

• Slow down when approaching elevated crossing.
• Shoulder check before turning right off of McDermot Avenue and note that once the bike lane is open cyclists will be cycling in both directions.

For cyclists

• Yield to pedestrians in crosswalks.
• Pay attention to signs indicating where to cycle.
• Watch for turning vehicles when approaching intersections.
• Press the button to activate the crossing signal at Arlington Street.

For pedestrians

• Watch for traffic and cyclists at intersections and approaches.
• Yield to cyclists when crossing the cycle lane at a location other than an intersection.

Two people are dead after a fire in a multi-family inner city dwelling Thursday morning.

West alexander area fire kills two back to video.

Both were located in the upper level of a 2 1/2-storey residence on McDermot Avenue at Juno Street in the West Alexander area.

Winnipeg Fire Parademic Service said some occupants had left the building on their own and others were assisted by firefighters. 

The two were pronounced dead at the scene. Acting platoon chief Dick Vlaming told reporters at the scene that other details were still being investigated.

A WFPS fire investigator, police, and the Office of the Medical Examiner are probing the deaths.

The cause of the fire, which the call came in for at about 9:35 a.m., remains under investigation and a damage estimate was not available.

About 10 residents were assisted in finding temporary residence, the city said in a release. They were among about 65 people assisted by Emergency Social Services over the past 12 hours as crews tackled four structure fires in the span of two hours the morning after three structure fires the night before, it said.

Travellers in Winnipeg frustrated as WestJet cancels hundreds of flights amid strike

Travellers stranded at the Winnipeg airport say they're confused and angry after an unexpected labour strike threw the plans of thousands of WestJet passengers into chaos on the Canada Day long weekend.

Hundreds of WestJet flights have been grounded across the country after the Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association, or AMFA, announced a surprise strike Friday.

The Calgary-based airline said earlier Saturday about 235 flights were cancelled, affecting about 33,000 people. It said another 150 flights were expected to be cancelled Saturday afternoon.

The labour action disrupted travel plans for people at Winnipeg's Richardson International Airport this weekend, as more than 10 flights at the airport had been cancelled as of Saturday afternoon, according to the Winnipeg Airports Authority.

Holly Warners, who landed in Winnipeg shortly before noon, said everything was going smoothly until she was informed about the cancellation after her first layover in a multi-stop journey from Pratt Falls, Ont., to her home in Anchorage, Alaska.

"I assume I'm going to have to spend the night in Winnipeg, but no one's talked about a hotel. No one's given me any options for the next flight," she said.

"There's people crying, there's people walking around. Their vacations are ruined. I'm just trying to get home and it's very, very frustrating."

'Nobody knows anything'

Silvia Pinto and Jean Paul Aragon said they arrived at the Winnipeg airport from Calgary at 10 p.m. Friday, only to be notified two hours later their flight to Cancun — to celebrate Aragon's birthday — was cancelled.

Pinto said Saturday she'd been on the phone for hours trying to find a solution.

"I think all the lines collapsed," she said. "We've been on the phone for, like, 13 hours already, and no one is answering."

Pinto said WestJet did send her a message saying her cost for the flight would be refunded, but that it could take 30 days. She was forced to book a new flight.

"My five-day vacation just became a two-day vacation, because now I have two days, 48 hours ahead of travel," she said.

"I'm going to cry, sorry. It's been crazy — like, nobody has any answers," she said. "They don't answer the phone and I write.… Nobody knows anything."

The labour action comes after the federal government directed the Canada Industrial Relations Board to impose binding arbitration between WestJet and the union, after discussions on a new labour agreement reached an impasse. 

On Friday, the mechanics' union said while roughly 680 workers were going ahead with strike action, it remains engaged in dialogue with the Canada Industrial Relations Board to resolve the contract impasse.

AMFA's legal counsel said even with the binding arbitration order, the union still has "a constitutional right" to take strike action.

The union's Friday statement said "the airline's unwillingness to negotiate with the union made the strike."

WestJet, meanwhile, said it is "outraged" with the move.

With a binding arbitration order in place, "the only reason for this union to continue with a strike action is to create damage, disrupt the travel plans of thousands of Canadians over the July long weekend and to inflict significant costs on our business," company president Diederik Pen said in a statement.

WestJet is asking people to check their flight status before they head to the airport.

But as she tries to get home to Alaska, Warners said the messaging does little to help.

"I would like for WestJet to know that it's very impactful to people," said Warners. "I understand there's a strike, [but] I guess … the lack of empathy and the lack of help is really frustrating."

TORONTO – The excitement and readiness was evident as Kayla Alexander looked ahead to the Paris Olympics.

Alexander, Natalie Achonwa and Kia Nurse headline the Canadian women’s basketball team announced Tuesday morning. It will be Alexander’s second Olympics but first time with spectators as the Tokyo Games took place in 2021 during the pandemic.

“Same level of excitement, for sure,” a beaming Alexander said at the Canadian Olympic Committee offices. “Feels different because the last one was COVID so didn’t have the full experience, I’m looking forward to having that this time around.

“But the joy and excitement and just the privilege of being able to represent your country, that never changes. That’s still something that I’m just overflowing with right now.”

The fifth-ranked Canadians qualified for the Games back in February at an Olympic qualifying tournament in Hungary. Canada went 1-2 but was helped out by fourth-ranked Spain defeating host Hungary 73-72 in the final game of the tournament.

“We know we were honestly like two seconds away (from) not making the Olympics,” said guard Nirra Fields, who will be appearing in her third Olympics.

“So going in with that mindset knowing that we are grateful to be here and we almost didn’t make it, to have that chip on our shoulders going in, I think that’s going to be the mindset and to really take advantage of this moment.”

It will be the fourth straight Games the women have qualified for. Canada is in Group B alongside third-ranked Australia, host and seventh-ranked France and 12th-ranked Nigeria.

The tournament is scheduled to run from July 28 to Aug. 11, with the group phase to be played in Lille, France. The top two teams from each group and the two best third-place teams qualify for the final phase, which will be held in Paris.

Canada, which opens the tournament July 29 against France, is looking to redeem itself after a disappointing ninth-place finish in Tokyo.

Since then, Canada placed fourth at the World Cup in 2022 and took bronze at the AmeriCup in 2023. The fourth-place result at the World Cup was Canada’s best since a bronze-medal showing in 1986.

“We’re definitely hungry,” guard Sami Hill said. “It’s been our goal, we’ve set it since the last Olympics, and especially since World Cup when we got a taste of the semifinals and then super close to the bronze medal and finished fourth.

“We have our sights set on being on the podium and we’re going to do everything we can to get there.”

The group is expected to be at full strength, a first in some time. Canada is often missing players at tournaments due to professional or school commitments or injury.

“We feel great, we really do,” assistant coach Steve Baur said. “I think the World Cup was a big showing for us, we had a chance to play on that stage and finish fourth. And at that time, we were still missing a couple key pieces.

“Aaliyah (Edwards) wasn’t able to with some school conflicts, Kia was still not 100 per cent herself. Our health is actually a really big step for what we’re hoping could catapult us from our performance at the World Cup into the Olympic Games.”

The roster boasts a mix of veterans and youth.

Achonwa, who is set to become the first Canadian women’s basketball player to appear in her fourth Games, is one of eight on the team with previous Olympic experience. She is also one of five WNBA players along with Nurse, Edwards, Laeticia Amihere and Bridget Carleton.

Meanwhile, guard Syla Swords is making her first Olympic appearance at 18 years old, having just finished high school. Swords is a five-star recruit that’s heading to Michigan in the fall, while former five-star recruit and Notre Dame sophomore Cassandre Prosper also made the roster.

“Honestly, I think we still have that great chemistry together,” Alexander said of the first-time Olympians. “The new additions, I think, are amazing.

Look closer, however, and you will see that Winnipeg is also uniquely located smack dab in the middle of North America: in the heart of the continent.

And despite its geographical isolation — some will say it’s as a result of it — Winnipeg, which is celebrating its 150-year birthday in 2024, has matured into a cosmopolitan city that is a cauldron of creativity. It is often referred to as the “cultural cradle” of Canada as a result of its history of talented artists, award-winning musicians, legendary festivals and world-renowned museums.

United Airlines resumed direct flights to Winnipeg in May, reestablishing a route the airline canceled after the start of the COVID-19 pandemic and making the city a 2 1/2-hour flight from Denver International Airport.

Known for its friendly and welcoming spirit — the province’s license plate motto is “Friendly Manitoba” — Winnipeg is a diverse multicultural city with a rich and varied history. An Indigenous trading center prior to the arrival of Europeans, Winnipeg was at the heart of the country’s fur trade and instrumental in developing Canada’s gateway to the west. It was once referred to as the “Chicago of the North.”

No, folks, it’s not just a collection of crazed, decked-out-in-white hockey fans cheering on their NHL’s Winnipeg Jets .

Roland Sawatzky, curator of history at the Manitoba Museum, says it’s the city’s isolation that actually defines it.

“That’s why it’s such a cultural center and such a creative center. We’re forced to do it ourselves,” he explains. “So we have these amazing festivals, so many great artists and so many great musicians. It’s a hotbed of creativity.”

Jason Hooper is the executive director at the city’s West End Cultural Centre , a nonprofit music venue that was founded in 1987 and has hosted a multitude of homegrown and international artists. He has had a front-row seat to the various displays of talent in the city and cites a collaborative all-for-one-and-one-for-all spirit that enables Winnipeg to punch above its weight.

“I think there’s a real sense of community that happens and it’s an artistic community that’s supportive of each other,” he says. “And then, equally important is there’s an audience that supports that community. You see it at all levels of culture in the city.

“There’s a real passion for creativity in Winnipeg that makes it a very special place.”

The city’s artistry and originality is also heavily influenced by its ethnic diversity and inclusiveness. Winnipeg is home to the largest Indigenous population in Canada, the third-largest Filipino and Ukrainian populations in Canada, and has the largest francophone community in Western Canada.

“There has always been an incredible openness to immigration in Winnipeg, because we want to grow, to change and to improve,” says Sawatzky. “Winnipeggers see immigration as a very positive thing … and because of that we are much more global than we used to be … and it is very much a city that is dedicated to and immersed in truth and reconciliation.”

The Winnipeg Gallery at the Manitoba Museum is a terrific place to get an overview of the city, past and present. Exhibits include a nine-minute timeline film of the history of Winnipeg; a 20-foot-long showcase with more than 100 artifacts exploring seven themes in the city’s history; an engaging storytelling feature where newcomers to the city express their feelings about living in Winnipeg; and an immersive experience where visitors enter a 1920 Winnipeg Cityscape and explore the buildings of the era and discover the diversity of people from more than 100 years ago.

A recent exhibit — If These Walls Could Talk — is a series of 20 posters that capture the issues and concerns of the LGBTQ+ community in Winnipeg from the early 1970s to the present. They are calls to action to advance and protect the rights of individuals in the community. A rainbow wall is “very popular with the kids,” says Sawatzky.

Here are several suggestions of places to explore on a trip to Winnipeg:

Opened in 2014 with an impressive eight floors of exhibition space, the award-winning Canadian Museum for Human Rights draws a quarter of a million visitors a year to galleries that focus on past and present global issues such as equality, justice and dignity, including a sizable component devoted to Canada’s indigenous people. A current exhibit that is scheduled to run until September 2024, called Beyond the Beat: Music of Resistance and Change , showcases artists who have used their talents to promote equality, freedom and social change.

Often praised for its live music scene , Winnipeg is best known for giving birth to the likes of The Guess Who, Neil Young and Bachman-Turner Overdrive. There is a wide variety of venues in the city that provide an opportunity for the next generation of musical upstarts, including the Times Change(d) High & Lonesome Club that is located in a beautifully restored 19th-century building a few blocks south of Winnipeg’s iconic intersection of Portage and Main and is best described as a Tom Waitsian masterpiece of honky-tonk glitz and grit. Young makes a homecoming on July 17, when he brings his Love Earth Tour to town.

Located in the 1,100-acre Assiniboine Park, The Leaf is an indoor horticultural attraction that houses four indoor plant biomes and more than 12,000 trees, shrubs and flowers from around the world. It is also home to Canada’s tallest indoor waterfall and a terrific butterfly garden.

Opened in 2021, Qaumajuq features the largest public collection of contemporary Inuit art in the world . This first-of-its-kind center connects to the Winnipeg Art Gallery , creating a 185,000-square-foot cultural campus in the heart of downtown Winnipeg.

Numerous festivals throughout the year include the live-theater Winnipeg Fringe Theatre Festival, the second-oldest such festival in North America; the Winnipeg Folk Festival , which will mark its 50th anniversary this year; the two-week Folklorama , the largest and longest-running multicultural festival of its kind in the world offering authentic entertainment, cuisine, and arts and crafts at a series of pavilions representing more than 40 countries; and the 10-day Festival du Voyageur that celebrates the city’s francophone community and fur-trading heritage with exhibits, entertainment, food and a popular snow-sculpting competition.

The FortWhyte Alive nature center is Winnipeg’s largest green space offering outdoor recreation and environmental education. It has some terrific trails for hiking, cycling and cross-country skiing, a gorgeous lake for canoeing and fishing, and the world’s largest urban bison (or buffalo, as they’re known in the U.S.) herd.

The Forks National Historic Site is located in the heart of Winnipeg at the junction of the Red and Assiniboine rivers and has been a meeting place of Indigenous people for more than 6,000 years. The 56-acre site includes The Forks Market with shops offering locally-produced goods. The Market is also home to The Common, a popular craft beer and wine kiosk located in the newly renovated Food Hall. The Children’s Museum , the Manitoba Theatre for Young People , and the Agowiidiwinan Centre , where visitors learn of the history of Canada’s First Nations, are all located at The Forks.

On the subject of food, there are plenty of unique eats in Winnipeg, but no visit is complete without a trip to a Salisbury House . Known to locals as simply “Sals,” this exclusive-to-Winnipeg restaurant chain has been serving up all-day breakfasts and burgers (which they call “nips”) since 1931. This writer’s suggestion is the three-cheese double nip. Ask them to butter and grill the bun.

Known as the French Quarter , Saint Boniface is one of Winnipeg’s many distinct neighborhoods and is the heart of Manitoba’s French history and culture. The area has a nice selection of boutiques, quaint cafes offering French cuisine and historical sites. Among these is the St. Boniface Cathedral and adjacent cemetery, which includes the gravesite of Louis Riel, leader of the ill-fated North-West Rebellion that rose against the federal government in 1885 to fight for the rights of the Metis people in Western Canada. Local tip: located across the Esplanade Bridge on the east side of the Red River, Saint Boniface is the ideal place to enjoy views of the downtown skyline. And for those with a sweet tooth, be sure to stop by the shop of Chocolatier Constance Popp .
