When packed away for travel it resembles a capsule, but it unpacks to reveal everything you need for your coffee (except a way of heating water). This makes it very portable but does mean it needs assembling and disassembling each time. On the plus side, it’s very easy to wash.

The pump at the top makes it easy to build pressure (a claimed 16 bars), with a handy stand at the bottom to keep things stable. Two cups are included, one to sit under the stand and one to measure hot water, with the tank holding up to 110ml. If you opt for ground coffee, you can fit up to 12g in the holder.

These machines work with ground coffee, Nespresso capsules, or Dolce Gusto capsules, but there’s a catch: you can’t use them all with the same model. You have to choose which type of coffee you’ll be using at the time of purchase.

The battery life will last long enough to heat and extract 3 shots. It doesn’t sound like much but should get you through a day in the outdoors. If you plan to brew for a crowd or need more caffeine in your day, you can buy additional battery packs. Alternatively, it’s a great companion to have on a long-distance drive, as the battery can be recharged through the 12V outlet.

This machine uses Nespresso capsules rather than ground coffee, so if you are using it while hiking, you’ll need to carry your used capsules home with you.

In the context of a portable machine, where you might be more inclined to use pre-ground coffee for convenience, this is a smart addition. And if you think that sounds like cheating, don’t worry; it’s removable.

At 1.1 kg, the UniTerra Nomad isn’t exactly something to toss in your purse. But, for a road trip, campsite, office desk, or campus dorm room, it’s an excellent option. At least, for a truly delicious coffee.

8.  AeroPress  – Best Camping Espresso Maker

The AeroPress is a longstanding favorite among travelers. It’s the lightest by far, and its simple plastic construction is nearly indestructible. You can toss this camping coffee machine at the bottom of your backpack and hike all day. You won’t feel weighed down, and it won’t be damaged.

But, notice how I said “coffee machine” and not “espresso machine”. Though AeroPress markets itself as an espresso maker, this isn’t entirely true. Its pressure maxes out around 0.7 bars ( 3 ), nowhere near what is needed to achieve a true espresso with a rich crema. What it does make is a very strong shot of coffee, suitable to be diluted with hot water or milk into your favorite beverage. If anything else, that strong cup of coffee is undeniably delicious. What’s the difference between a portable espresso maker and a portable coffee maker?

The difference between a portable espresso maker and a portable coffee maker is in the way coffee is made. To be classified as an espresso, water must be forced through ground coffee at 8 to 10 bars, and crema should make up at least 10% of the beverage ( 4 ). While not all portable espresso makers will necessarily meet this strict Italian definition, they come pretty close. Other travel coffee makers have no such requirements and the resulting beverage won’t have a crema. Good examples would be pour-over devices or French presses . The Aeropress, which uses lower pressure, is a bit of a hybrid.

How do you operate an espresso machine without electricity?

Operating an espresso machine without electricity isn’t new. With the first steam-driven espresso machine patented in 1884 ( 5 ), before electricity was commonplace, it’s actually a bit of a throwback.

The two main ways to achieve the high pressure needed for an espresso without electricity are a hand pump or a lever press. In the former, the operator uses a pump to build up enough tension to force water through the grounds. In a lever system, the barista pushes down on a lever to force water through the ground coffee. This takes a bit of muscle but allows optimum control over extraction.

How do you get good crema?

You get good crema by following several rules. So, to make it thick and rich (which is the hallmark of good cream and espresso) you have to include different factors. First, you want to use freshly roasted beans that you’ll grind and tamp. You need to use just the right amount of coffee for that. Then, you want to ensure you have an espresso machine that can produce 9 bars.

What is an ESE pod?

ESE pod stands for Easy Serving Espresso Pod. These pods, similar to coffee capsules, were developed by Italian coffee company Illy so that baristas could produce consistently good espresso with less training. Essentially, they take much of the guesswork out of good espresso, though coffee connoisseurs will suggest that they never produce great espresso. They’re a convenient option for travelers as they are easy to toss in a bag and mess-free.

Since then, we’ve tested many similar products while periodically revisiting previous recommendations to ensure they’re still up to our standards. We purchased the Wacaco Minipresso so our reviewer could put it to the test in the kitchen—and elsewhere. Keep reading for our full product review.

Making coffee outside of the house can be quite a challenge, but today there are many options on the market that make it easy to brew your coffee or espresso at the office or even on a camping trip. One example is the Wacaco Minipresso NS, which can make espresso in mere minutes, and it does so in a convenient compact size. I tried it out for several weeks and evaluated its portability, ease of use, espresso quality , setup, cleanup, and price. Read on to see what I found.

Setup Process: Potential learning curve

The setup for the Wacaco Minipresso NS isn’t difficult, but it takes some time to get familiar with the parts and understand the espresso-making process . It’s not your typical espresso machine, which is why I needed to spend extra time reading through the manual. There were plenty of diagrams in the instructions that made it fairly easy to follow. There were no first-time use instructions, so after I rinsed all of the parts, I just assumed it was ready to go. It’s important to note the Wacaco Minipresso NS requires the original Nespresso capsules. 

To make espresso, I began boiling about ½ cup of water, and I removed the espresso cup and the outlet from the top of the main body. I placed a Nespresso capsule in the fitted slot inside, and I attached the outlet head back on (without the espresso cup now). I flipped the Wacaco Minipresso over and unscrewed the water tank. Then, I added boiling water to the tank to the max level marker. Next, I screwed the main body back onto the water tank. 

At this time, I unlocked the piston by turning it to the left, and the button expanded. I proceeded to pump it over my espresso cup. The first eight strokes didn’t pump any espresso out (as expected), but after the eighth pump, it became harder to stroke and the espresso came out of the spout. I continued to stroke the piston until no more espresso came out. Each capsule makes about 1.5 ounces of espresso. 

Design: Portable size, minimal aesthetic

When it comes to manual espresso makers, the Wacaco Minipresso is about as small as they come, measuring 6.89 by 2.75 by 2.36 inches. It’s so easy to fit it inside of a suitcase, a backpack, a water bottle holder, or even a purse—it’s that compact. Overall, I found the compact size and shape to be ideal for traveling. In terms of design, it boasts of a minimalist aesthetic. It’s all-black in color, without any frills, which gives it a sort of elegance, in my opinion. 

There’s a compartment on the top that encapsulates the spout (where the espresso comes out), and there is a removable espresso cup that goes over the spout. The water tank is located in the compartment on the bottom. The main body sits between these two compartments and houses the piston. The piston lies flat against the main body until it’s ready to be used, and when turned left, it expands to make the espresso shot. 

Performance: Easy to use, excellent on-the-go espresso

The Wacaco Minipresso NS single serve brewer makes high-quality and consistent espresso considering its compact size. What makes the espresso so consistent and tasty is that it uses Nespresso capsules instead of espresso grounds. This reduces the chance of error when it comes to the espresso-making technique and, therefore, produces a consistent and strong espresso shot every time. There was always a crema on top of my espresso shots, and they always tasted strong and very much like espresso you’d get from a typical electric Nespresso machine.

 Once I got the hang of it, it probably took me about 3 minutes or less to make a shot of espresso.

With that, the Wacaco Minipresso requires little preparation since it’s only compatible with Nespresso capsules. I merely had to boil some water, put the capsule inside the main body, and give the piston a few strokes. Once I got the hang of it, it probably took me about 3 minutes or less to make a shot of espresso . Also, I found the process to be quite fun to carry out and watch. I enjoyed getting to stroke it myself to get the espresso to come out of the tube. It made the espresso shot that much more satisfying . 

Ease of Cleaning: A quick to-do

Since the Wacaco Minipresso is small, there’s very little to clean after each use. All of the pieces in the espresso machine must be washed by hand to remove any remaining coffee. I just ran it under warm running water per the manual’s recommendation. The rest of the body can be wiped with a damp cloth and then left to air dry. This probably took less than 2 minutes, which was no big deal.  

Price: More than fair

The Wacaco Minipresso retails for around $49, which is a more than fair price considering the quality espresso it makes and its ease of use. For such convenience and quality, it’s worth the investment.

Wacaco Minipresso vs. AeroPress Coffee Maker

The AeroPress Coffee Maker is a manual portable coffee maker that retails for slightly less at around $30. It’s very similar in size and shape to the Wacaco Minipresso, but differs in the type of coffee it produces. The AeroPress makes espresso-like concentrate, but not true espresso like the Wacaco. In addition, the AeroPress is a little more involved and requires more manual labor than the Wacaco since the user has to grind their coffee beans and measure them out as opposed to the Wacaco in which you would just insert the Nespresso capsule. 

Either way, you can’t really lose. Both are great travel companions, but it comes down to what kind of coffee you prefer and the level of convenience you’re looking to get out of a portable coffee maker.

A worthwhile buy.

The Wacaco Minipresso NS is a great purchase for someone who regularly enjoys making espresso on the go. It makes consistent and quality espresso shots, and it’s small enough to bring to work, on vacation, and even on camping trips.

It's been a while now since either my wife or I had access to the kind of expensive Italian-made espresso machines you find in nice coffee shops, but thanks to the world of portable espresso makers, I've figured out how to make the perfect espresso no matter where I go.

WIRED has looked at some of the best latte and cappuccino machines , best portable coffee makers , and best cold brew makers , but we wanted to share some ways to make great espresso on the road or at the campsite. Making a barista-worthy espresso is challenging. Doing it without electricity or a giant machine is even more daunting.

Wacaco Picopresso Portable Espresso Maker ($130)

Wacaco's Picopresso is the overall best portable espresso maker I've tried. The compact design, lightweight but solid construction, and excellent extraction results give it the edge over the rest of our picks below. It consistently pulled delicious shots (once I got the grind right) with very little bitterness, and it reliably produces a nice crema.

A couple of notes to getting the best extraction: Grind your coffee pretty fine. I used my trusty Hario hand grinder, but have a look at our coffee grinder guide for other options. Make sure you preheat the Picopresso—pump hot water through with nothing in the basket and then make your actual shot. It takes a fair amount of pressure to pump the water. If you have arthritis, repetitive strain injury, or another source of joint pain in your hands, the Picopresso is probably not the best choice. The company has a handy video here that breaks down the process.

The biggest downside right now is getting your hands on one. The company currently has a waitlist, you can sign up to be notified when more are in stock. Our former top pick, Wacaco's Nanopresso ($80) , is still a solid choice and might be easier to come by right now. The extraction it produces isn't quite as good as the Picopresso and it's less compact, but if you need it now, it's probably your best bet.

The Flair is the least portable of the devices reviewed here. It does pack down to a roughly laptop-size case that's about 2 inches thick, but it's heavy. It looks great on a kitchen counter between trips, though. What you lose in portability is more than made up for in the quality of the espresso. 

The Flair Signature is simple to use. You can see the process in the company's very helpful video guide to brewing . It's also built like a tank, and clean-up is just a matter of dumping the espresso and rinsing out the portafilter.

Experimentation with various grinds is necessary to get the ideal extraction. Of course, the fresher the coffee, the better the results. That said, you can even get excellent results with pre-ground espressos like Medaglia D'Oro .

Flair offers two other models: the Classic and the Signature Pro. The primary differences are the size and the materials of the brew heads. If you're willing to forgo stainless steel, the classic works the same way and should produce the same results. The Classic is $165 at Amazon . The Signature Pro goes for $325 and is a step up in build quality.

9Barista ($385)

I've reviewed a lot of gadgets over the years, but few, if any, have been as astoundingly ingenious as the 9Barista. This is the only stovetop espresso maker I am aware of that actually reaches 9 bars, the amount of pressure you need for true espresso. 

The designer is a jet engineer and his background shows in the internals. The double-chambered design traps boiling water until the pressure builds to 9 bars. At that point, a release valve opens and the water travels up a coil, which cools it slightly, before being pushed up into the ground espresso, and finally out into the cup. The results, once you get your grind right, are delicious. It produces a clean, smooth extraction with a nice bit of crema.

Portable is stretch here—the 9Barista is very well made, but it does weigh more than three pounds. For a small apartment with limited kitchen counter space, or for those RV trips you've been plotting, it's perfect.

The main drawback, aside from the price, is that you'll have to wait for it to cool before opening it to brew a second shot. At least you can grind and prep your coffee while you wait, saving some time. I found that, with a bit of cool water to speed things along, I could brew shots with only a couple of minutes in between. And yes, it's expensive, but considering the quality of construction and the materials involved, it doesn't feel outrageous.

Uniterra Nomad ($300)

Uniterra Nomad

The Uniterra Nomad is also not the most portable device, though it is smaller and lighter than the Flair. It puts that heft to good use by looking like a little piece of metal art sitting on your desk while cranking out an excellent, creamy espresso.

The Nomad, which grew out of a Kickstarter campaign, is made mostly of solid metal, which gives it a sturdy feel some of our other options lack. It's also the only one to include a proper, heavy, high-quality tamper to evenly press down your coffee.

The company touts its True Crema Valve, a bit of engineering that helps compensate for a bad grind or poor tamping. I tested this by using some pre-ground coffee from a large chain that shall remain nameless. The extraction from the poorly ground coffee with the True Crema valve was better than the extraction without it.

You should always use high-quality beans—nothing will improve your espresso so much as good, freshly roasted beans. But if you mess up the grind or don't tamp the grounds properly, the Nomad's True Crema Valve can save you from yourself.

Cafflano Kompresso ($75)

The Cafflano Kompresso is the lightest espresso maker in this roundup and also the easiest to clean, making it ideal for backpacking.

It relies on a manual hydraulic compressor to force the water through and extract espresso. It's the least forgiving device I tested, and the results can be the best cup of espresso or the worst among these picks. You need fresh, high-quality beans and time to get the grind right. Grind too coarse and you'll end up with a watery mess. Grind too fine and you'll have to use your whole body weight to force the extraction. But when you find the sweet spot, you can get a good 3/8 inch of crema and a deliciously smooth shot.

Unlike every other device, the Kompresso makes a good cold-brew shot too. The secret, which I found on the company's Instagram account , is to tamp extra hard and presoak for one minute. The results are amazing (again, assuming you have high-quality beans and a good grind).

Coffee must meet three requirements to qualify as espresso.

• It must be brewed under pressure instead of infused.
• It should have a very high brew ratio, usually two parts water to one part coffee. Brewed coffee is more like 15 to one.
• Espresso tends to be darker, heavier, and richer than infusion-brewed coffee. As such, the beans are typically a darker roast, though I've noticed lighter roasts may be growing in popularity.

For this guide, I limited the options to pressurized brewers, which is why there's no AeroPress or moka pot, neither of which make espresso. (A moka pot is pressurized, but not enough to qualify as espresso.) The Aeropress is in our Best Portable Coffee Makers guide .

There are three basic, vital espresso tips I'll leave you with.

Find good, fresh beans: If you haven’t made espresso before, start with high-quality beans. Quality beans can make even cheap brewing equipment shine. And high quality means fresh. Find a local coffee roaster in your area.

If you don't have a coffee roaster nearby, you can order beans online or try one of the preground espresso blends at your local grocery store. I've tried popular espresso blends like Lavazza , Medaglia D'Oro , and Café Bustelo . Medaglia D'Oro has a smoother flavor than the others, but it's still more bitter than freshly roasted and ground whole beans.

For testing, I used beans from Jittery Joe's roasting company in Athens, Georgia, specifically the Wake-n-Bake blend. (Disclosure: I worked for Jittery Joe's for many years, so I grew to like its coffee.) I also used an espresso blend from Fahrenheit Coffee Roaster in Mancos, Colorado, and an excellent dark roast Indian coffee from Atlas Coffee Club . Get a quality grinder: Once you have good, freshly roasted beans you need to grind them. You'll want a burr grinder, which grinds your beans evenly rather than chopping them like a blade grinder. See our guide to coffee grinders to find the perfect one for you.

Start experimenting: Pick one of these makers and start experimenting. At first, make sure you weigh out your beans and water using a good scale like this Eravsow Digital Scale , and take notes. It may sound like extreme nerdery, and it is, but after experimenting for a few days you'll likely find something you love, and you'll know how to pull your perfect shot every time for espresso—no matter where you are.

Nespresso coffee capsules take the thinking out of making your morning cup of Joe. There are plenty of models available, but the Nespresso Essenza Mini is the most compact option in the current range. So if you’re tight for space, or even if you just want to keep your counters neat and streamlined, this model is worth considering.

It’s a small, good value coffee machine with just two buttons to deliver either espresso, or lungo coffee. The uncomplicated setup means it’s the perfect entry level machine. However,don’t expect it to steam milk or dispense boiling water, as this is the no-frills option.

Nespresso Essenza Mini review: Price and availability

The Nespresso Essenza Mini is a bargain price at $179/ £90. It’s available direct from Nespresso or via Amazon, as well as many other retailers both online and in store. It’s one of the cheapest Nespresso machines you can buy, as well as being one of the smallest. So whether it’s your budget or space that’s tight, this might be the Nespresso that ticks your boxes. 

It uses the Nespresso Original capsules which start at $0.80 for an espresso, or 39p if you’re in the UK. Capsules are readily available online, you can order direct from Nespresso as well as through plenty of other retailers such as Amazon and Walmart in the US.

Nespresso Essenza Mini review: Design 

The Nespresso Essenza Mini is available in gray, white, or black. These muted color options combined with its small size make this model a discreet and subtle addition to your kitchen counter. In fact, it’s so small it’ll slot neatly onto a shelf or in a pantry, without you even noticing it’s there. And at just 5lbs, it’s super lightweight and easy to move around.

It’s easy to use with just two buttons — one for espresso and one for lungo. So there’s no need to spend hours pouring over the manual to get to grips with how to use it. It’s designed to be simple and intuitive.

At the back of the machine you’ll find the removable 20oz water container. Flipping up the lid unlocks it from the base and allows it to be taken to the sink for cleaning or refilling. Bear in mind, there’s no handle, but since it’s so small, a handle isn’t really necessary. The clear, plastic design makes it easy to see the water level at a glance, and there is a max fill line that’s only visible once it’s removed.

The small drip tray is removable, which is handy since there’s only space for cups up to 3.5 inches/ 9 cm tall otherwise. This is fine for small espresso cups but for anything larger like a standard mug, you’ll need to remove the drip tray and place the mug directly on the counter. This allows space for mugs up to 5 inches/ 13 cm.

The used capsule bin is located just behind the drip tray, and sits on top of another drip tray to allow excess water to drain from the capsules. It might not be the most robust setup for used capsules, but it’s compact, does the job and slots together neatly.

Nespresso Essenza Mini review: Performance

Despite being a compact, simple machine, the Essenza Mini’s performance is comparable to similar models, such as the Nespresso Pixie . Once switched on, it heats up and is ready to go in around 28 seconds. The time to pour an espresso varied slightly between capsules, but on average it was around 22 seconds, while a lungo needed about 37 seconds. So regardless of brew size, it’ll be in your cup around one minute from switching on the coffee machine — making it convenient for busy mornings.

Coffee temperatures come out at approximately 151°F for an espresso and 157°F for a lungo which is typical of most Nespresso Original machines. And with a max reading of 70 dB on my noise meter, it’s one of the quietest Nespresso models I’ve recently reviewed.

Energy consumption is 0.005 kWh to pour an espresso, but when you include the energy it uses heating up, it comes to a total of 0.012 kWh. Again, this is pretty typical across the Nespresso range. In addition, it goes into sleep mode after 9 minutes of no use, to save energy.

The coffee flavor very much depends on the capsule you choose to use, and the crema consistency can also vary by capsule as well as cup width.. Generally, the crema isn’t thick, velvety and robust in the same way that you’ll get from a barista style machine. But with that said, I don’t think you’re buying this machine for gourmet coffee. What it does well is offer speedy, consistent coffee each time, without any mess and hassle.

Nespresso Essenza Mini review: Ease of use and cleaning

Since there’s no milk frother, controls are limited to just the two cup sizes, making this machine uncomplicated and effortless to use. Pushing either of the two buttons wakes it up, and both buttons flash during the warm up process. They then remain solidly lit when it’s ready to brew coffee.

The lever makes it easy to add your capsule while simultaneously dropping used capsules out into the container. The used capsule container can only hold six capsules, so needs to be emptied frequently. But, arguably when you buy such a compact machine, it would be unrealistic to expect it to have space for more. Similarly, the drip tray doesn’t have a big capacity, so it’s worth emptying this alongside the used capsules. Since they slide out of the front of the machine together, it does make sense to empty and clean both at the same time.

At the back, the small water container releases from the machine by flipping up the lid and tilting it. Repositioning it when full of water also requires flipping up the lid to get it to click back into position. While this feels awkward and fiddly at first, after doing it a few times, you get the hang of it.

There is a max fill line but not a minimum fill line on the water container, however the clear plastic makes it easy to see when the water is running low. If you forget to check the water level and try to dispense coffee while it’s empty, the machine will still attempt to brew the coffee, but nothing will come out. Bear in mind, there’s no alert or indicator to warn you that it’s out of water, so you will need to keep an eye on this.

In addition, there’s nothing in the manual to indicate that the removable parts can be cleaned in a dishwasher. But, since all the parts are so small, washing them by hand with hot soapy water is a speedy process.

The only other bit of maintenance is the descaling process, which you’ll have to perform after every 300 espressos if you live in a hard water area. The descaling process cleans and descales the inner workings of the coffee maker and it’s automatic. You simply add the descaling solution to the water tank, and follow the instructions in the manual for the button combination that starts the process. It’s simple and essential for keeping the machine in tip top condition. Unfortunately there's no alert or indicator to remind you when it’s time to descale, so you’ll have to create a calendar reminder instead.

Nespresso Essenza Mini review: Verdict

The biggest selling feature of the Nespresso Essenza Mini is undeniably its space-saving size, followed by its wallet-friendly price tag. It’s one of the smallest coffee machines I’ve ever reviewed — ideal for tiny homes or cluttered kitchens. In fact, it’s so small it’s likely that your stock of coffee capsules will take up more space than the appliance itself.

However, with the small size comes some compromises — like the small used capsule container, as well as the small water container. But, these are minor snags, which are to be expected. Like many other Nespresso machines, it doesn’t deliver premium barista quality espresso, but it’s good quality considering it’s from a capsule. Plus, you can enjoy a quick and easy coffee-making experience from a machine that won’t take over your kitchen. 

The Nespresso Pixie offers a similar size and comes at a slightly more expensive price of $229. There’s not much difference in the performance, but the metal side plates do give it a more sturdy feel. Alternatively, the Breville Nespresso Creatista Plus is worth checking out if you want a built-in milk frother. We found it created the perfect texture of frothed milk.

Whether you’re on a business trip or a camping adventure, getting a good caffeine fix on the road is always a challenge for espresso lovers. There are plenty of portable drip coffee makers on the market, but finding one that makes true espresso is a harder task.

I’ve tested dozens of so-called travel espresso makers, many of which just brew a strong coffee. My picks brew real-deal espresso no matter where your travels take you. 

The 6 Best Travel Espresso Makers in 2024

Let’s take a look at my list of the best portable espresso makers. They are varying degrees of portable; some are better suited to a road trip, while others are perfect for a backcountry journey. But they all share one commonality: high-quality espresso for the coffee lover on the go!

Now all you need is a great bag of espresso beans and a few tips on espresso extraction .

1. Flair Classic

• Capacity: 60 mL
• Weight: 5 pounds
• Pressure method: Manual lever

The design inspiration behind the original Flair was to create a portable espresso machine with only the components needed to produce the best espresso – no bells and whistles to weigh it down, complicate assembly, or increase the price. The brand’s wild success and expansion are testaments to how well they met that goal. 

That first Flair (now called the Flair Classic) is still my favorite way to make espresso when I’m not at home.

While it’s among the heavier espresso makers on this list, the Flair disassembles and packs neatly into an included compact travel case. I wouldn’t take it hiking, but it’s great for bringing out to the lake house, visiting the in-laws, or car camping trips.

The Flair is a true manual espresso maker, offering complete control over your shot of espresso: grind, tamp , water temperature, bars of pressure, and timing. It takes a little skill to use but puts no limitations on how good your espresso can be ( 1 ).

With lever machines, the barista is in control…They allow creativity and experimentation.

2. Wacaco Picopresso

• Capacity: 80 mL
• Weight: 12.3 oz
• Pressure method: Hand-driven piston

Wacaco has emerged as the go-to brand for great portable espresso makers, with each model aimed at a different traveler. The Picopresso is the newest and most pro-oriented of the bunch ( 2 ).

The Picopresso is first and foremost for coffee connoisseurs that desire a superb body and aroma out of their portable coffee.

This mainly comes down to a larger 52-mm non-pressurized bottomless filter basket that can hold up to 18 grams of coffee. It has the capacity to deliver a true double shot with a rich crema. 

Once I dialed in the best extraction, the shots I pulled with the tiny Picopresso were on par with any traditional espresso machine. It also has a lot more metal in its build than Wacaco’s other plastic-heavy offerings.

On paper, the Picopresso is the most compact Wacaco machine, but it’s the only one without an integrated cup. Instead, it comes with a range of extras, including a funnel to help load the filter basket, a tamper, and a distribution tool. This makes for a more professional brewing experience, but there’s more for you to potentially misplace in transit.

3. Wacaco Nanopresso

• Weight: 11.9 oz

The Wacaco Nanopresso was the first upgrade to the original Minipresso , and in my opinion, there’s no reason to buy the Minipresso now unless you really want to save a few bucks.

The Nanopresso can’t match the Picopresso or Flair in espresso quality (or build quality), but it has them both beat in portability. It’s my first choice when I’m hitting the trails for an overnight backpacking trip. 

It’s tiny and light, includes a built-in espresso cup, and has a pressurized portafilter. While I can’t stand a pressurized filter basket at home, it makes sense deep in the woods. 

I can enjoy great espresso shots even using pre-ground coffee and no tamper – a simplicity I crave on the trail.

The Nanopresso is highly customizable, provided you’re willing to pay for the extras. I definitely recommend the optional carrying case, and the adaptor to make coffee with capsules is handy. The Wacaco Barista Kit expands its filter and water tank capacity from single shots to double shots, which is worthwhile if you’re serving two.

4. Conqueco Portable Espresso Machine

• Weight: 33.4 oz
• Pressure method: Battery-powered pump

Battery-operated coffee makers tend to be plagued with reliability issues, but Conqueco is one of few brands bucking that trend. I’ve been singing the praises of the Conqueco as the perfect travel companion for years, and the recently released new model is substantially better!

Compared to the older version, the latest model is smaller and lighter but has a larger capacity. It heats much faster (under five minutes to heat 80 mL of water for a double shot in my tests), can brew more coffee on a single charge, and achieves higher pump pressure – all for the same price. 

It’s powered by a rechargeable Li-ion battery, making it the only machine on this list that doesn’t require a separate heat source. However, if boiling water is available, you can use it to save battery power.

The only thing I don’t like about this machine is that it brews exclusively with aluminum coffee capsules – not freshly ground coffee beans or even refillable capsules. While capsules are convenient sometimes, they are also expensive and environmentally unfriendly, so I like the option to avoid them ( 3 ).

5. Bellman CX25P Stovetop Espresso Maker

• Capacity: 270 mL
• Weight: 5.64 pounds
• Pressure method: Steam pressure

What if a sweet campsite cup of espresso isn’t enough? What if you want a latte, cappuccino, or cortado? Then you need the one-of-a-kind Bellman Espresso Maker, which includes a proper steam wand.

The Bellman design is similar to a Moka pot. Fill the lower chamber with water and set it over a heat source to let steam pressure build. But this stainless steel espresso machine has a much more robust build than the average stovetop brewer and generates high enough pressure to produce true espresso with a thick crema. 

Where this portable device really shines, however, is the steam wand. With a bit of practice, you can make cafe-quality microfoam for your latte or airy froth for a cappuccino ( 4 ). I definitely suggest buying the full Bellman Bundle, which includes a tamper and stainless steel milk jug.

The downside of the Bellman is that it’s (perhaps not surprisingly) the heaviest machine on this list. This is not a backpacker’s tool. It’s best for car camping; it works beautifully on my old-school Coleman stove. It’s honestly pretty great at home, too – compatible with gas, electric, and induction cooktops.

6. Staresso Classic

• Weight: 14.1 ounces
• Pressure method: Hand-powered piston

The Staresso Classic has been around for a long time because it’s simple and affordable. It just works. It’s the most basic design of anything on this list, and I mean that as a compliment. 

This all-in-one brewer is easy to use, easy to clean, and nearly impossible to break.

The pumping mechanism is stainless steel, but it’s coated in a comfortable silicone for easy gripping. I do find the pump a little stiff on this one, so it’s a bit more of an arm workout than the others.

Despite being the cheapest option on the list, the Staresso Classic is surprisingly versatile. It’s the only one that works with coffee grounds and Nespresso-type capsules without the need to purchase additional adaptors, and I’ve found it works just as well with cold water if you want to make an iced Americano.

The downside is its relatively small capacity. In my experience, it’s impossible to pack more than about 10 grams of ground coffee in the little basket, so don’t plan on pulling any double shots.

How To Choose The Right Portable Espresso Maker

Investing in a portable espresso maker is the best way to ensure you’re never without delicious coffee. But don’t be tempted to purchase a travel-friendly espresso maker (or any home espresso machine ) just based on style or price. It’s important to find the one that meets your needs. Here are a few things to consider before you buy.

What Level Of Portability Do You Require?

This is the most important deciding factor. Where do you plan to brew coffee and espresso? All travel espresso makers are relatively compact, durable, and don’t require electricity, but their size and weight vary considerably.

Prioritize low weight and high durability if you want to pull shots on a multi-day backpacking trip. On the other hand, a more comfortable user experience might be worth a few extra ounces if you’re going to be brewing in a hotel room.

Does It Take Ground Coffee, Pods, Or Both?

We all know that freshly ground beans make the best coffee. But depending on your travel plans, having the option to brew using capsules can be incredibly convenient. Personally, I like using capsules on camping trips as they make for easy packing and clean-up. They’re also handy if you’re serving multiple people with different tastes.

Don’t Forget To Factor In Accessories

Most of the manual espresso machines on this list (with the exception of the Conqueco and the Bellman) require a separate way to heat water. Some include little built-in espresso cups, while others require you to bring your own travel mug. Depending on your drink preferences, you might also need to add a tamper, milk jug, or manual coffee grinder. Take those extras into consideration when evaluating your space and weight needs—and your budget. 

The Verdict

Choosing the best portable espresso maker for you depends on your precise travel habits. But if you can afford the space and weight, the Flair Classic is the best espresso maker I’ve used for portable espresso and coffee. It’s incredibly well made, disassembles easily for travel, and delivers excellent espresso shots on par with the expensive automatic espresso machine at your local coffee shop.

What is the best portable coffee maker?

The best travel coffee maker, in my opinion, is the Aeropress. It’s lightweight, portable, durable, and makes amazing coffee on the go. If you want the best brewing travel kit with a coffee maker and grinder, pair the Aeropress with the Porlex Mini grinder, which fits right inside the brew chamber.

Why buy a portable espresso maker?

Buy a portable espresso maker so you never have to be without a quality espresso experience. Because portable espresso makers are manual, they tend to be relatively affordable and compact. So they can also be a great option for an espresso lover with limited space and budget.

Is Picopresso better than Nanopresso?

Picopresso is better than Nanopresso in espresso quality and durability. But depending on your needs, it isn’t necessarily the right espresso option for you. I find the Nanopresso more practical for backcountry travel because you don’t need to dial in the shot as carefully, and it includes a built-in cup.

Nespresso Essenza Mini Overview

Nespresso has two lines of capsule-based espresso machines:

• OriginalLine: Their original line (duh) that used a 19 bar pump to extract shots from capsules
• VertuoLine: Their new line that uses Centrifusion (rapid capsule spinning) to extract shots from barcode-enabled capsules but also brews standard coffee up to 17 oz

For our money, OriginalLine machines are better than VertuoLine machines because their pump produces more authentic espresso, the coffee tends to be hotter, and there's no barcode scanning system meaning you can find less-expensive third-party capsules.

The smallest and most basic Nespresso machine available, the Essenza Mini pulls the same high-quality shot as the other OriginalLine models in a much smaller package.

At only 5.1 lbs it’s one-third or one-half the weight of many other OriginalLine models, and it has a minuscule 3.2″W x 12.8″D base to limit its footprint on your countertop.

Capable of brewing shots from 1.35 oz to 3.70 oz, the Essenza Mini has two programmable brew buttons that easily allow you to customize your shot size. Here's how it works:

While conventional espresso machines can be bulky, complicated, or expensive, the best small espresso machines have a minimal footprint and are often as simple to use as pushing a button. 

“Espresso machines may be categorized into three basic modalities: manual, semi-automatic, and fully automatic,” says Heather Calatrello, owner and head roaster at ShedLight Coffee . “For those seeking a truly hands-off brewing experience, fully automatic machines are the way to go. For most home coffee brewers, however, a semi-automatic machine will tick most of the boxes for ease of use and affordability.”

Whichever your preference, the best small espresso machines should reliably produce great results, all without the fuss and space requirements of a full-sized espresso machine. We tested dozens of espresso machines, evaluating each one on design, ease of use, and overall performance. With Calatrello’s help, we’ve rounded up the best small espresso machines.

Best Overall

Breville bambino plus espresso machine.

The Bambino is easy-to-use, compact, and the milk frother attachment works exceptionally well.

There are no variable grind control settings to dial in, so you'll need to use a separate grinder for more precise control.

The Bambino is hands down our favorite small espresso machine. With its ability to select automatic one- or two-shot volumes at the touch of a button, it's an ideal option for beginners. This user-friendly machine features a simple control panel with just five buttons. Its compact design and lightweight construction can tuck into any corner of your coffee bar or cabinet, although we'd opt to keep it out on our countertops permanently.

During our tests, we liked that this machine has a small footprint while still feeling sturdy and durable. It's well-designed, and we noted that the automatic milk frother works well. If you don't like frothing milk at home or simply want to keep your hands free, this is the product for you. One note: There are no variables to dial in for the espresso itself. That comes from whatever coffee grinder or ground coffee you use. Overall, the Bambino delivers an exceptional coffee experience with a compact footprint. De'Longhi Stilosa Espresso Machine

This is a great value for those who don’t mind a manual machine.

The plastic body isn’t as luxe as some other models.

If you’re up for a manual espresso machine, the De’Longhi Stilosa is a great budget buy with a compact footprint. This small machine lets you pull either a single or double shot of espresso — perfect for a cute espresso cup . Plus, there’s a built-in milk frother , and its dual-level cup holder accommodates taller mugs. 

During our tests, it took a few trial runs to figure out the correct pressure and flow of water. However, we found that the final pulls from the machine created excellent espresso. Although there is a bit of a learning curve if you’re not already familiar with espresso machines, the no-frills design of this De’Longhi will have you up and running in no time. The package includes everything you need to get started — just add espresso grounds.

Best Splurge

Smeg medium fully-automatic coffee machine.

This was the most consistent machine out of the semi and super-automatic machines

The milk wand is too short, and this machine does not include a milk jug.

A sleek combination of retro style and futuristic minimalism, the Smeg Medium Fully-Automatic Coffee Machine earned a nearly perfect score in our tests. If you're looking for an incredibly easy-to-use automatic espresso machine, we recommend the Smeg. It has a fully automated brewing process with a simple 5-button control panel. While its design looks boxy at first glance, it has a compact footprint and we noted that it could easily be tucked into the corner of any coffee bar setup.

One of the most user-friendly espresso machines we tested, this machine takes care of everything from grinding beans to tamping espresso to steaming milk. We found this machine consistently delivers well-rounded shots with each pull. While the milk wand could benefit from an extended length, its overall ease of use and performance make it a great choice, even for first-time espresso drinkers. Based on this machine's consistent performance and ease of use, we recommend the Smeg as our best splurge.

This is an easy-to-use machine with built-in pod storage.

It’s only compatible with Nespresso Vertuo pods.

Also a top pick in our selection of best Nespresso machines , the Nespresso VertuoPlus Deluxe is one of our favorite small espresso machines thanks to its ease of use and consistent quality. During our tests, we found this machine to be quite versatile since it can brew espresso and coffee in four sizes. We also liked the generously sized 60-ounce water tank, which requires less frequent refills. Whether we selected espresso or a full-size cup of coffee, the VertuoPlus turned out smooth, aromatic coffee drinks. 

While it does operate exclusively with Vertuo Nespresso pods , there’s a wide variety available, and the VertuoPlus offers built-in pod storage. This is a classic and iconic espresso maker that still holds up in modern kitchens.

The aluminum-developed flavor isn’t for everyone.

For purists or folks looking for something more basic, the classic Moka pot is still a great way to brew quality espresso at home. There’s no fancy machine needed for this method. Just pop the Moka Express on your stovetop and let the heat work its magic. This may not be the ideal choice if you’re looking for a versatile machine that can whip up barista-style espresso drinks, but if you’re a less-is-more type, it’s hard to beat the ease of use and small size of the Moka pot.

In our tests, we found the Bialetti to be pretty straightforward to use — fill the reservoir with water, pop in your grounds, screw on the top half, and place on the stove to start the brewing process. One note is that the aluminum body gets pretty hot, so you’ll want to handle it with care.

Our Favorite Small Espresso Machines 

Our favorite small espresso machine is the Breville Bambino because it's easy-to-use, compact, and the milk frother attachment works exceptionally well. The Nespresso VertuoPlus Deluxe Coffee and Espresso Machine is a great pod-based choice if you’re looking for simplicity. For a splurge, we recommend the Smeg Medium Fully-Automatic Coffee Machine .

As part of our larger espresso machine testing, we combed through our testing data to determine the best small espresso machines from the bunch. Though these machines range in size from single-serving manual espresso presses to fully automatic espresso machines, they have one factor in common: They can all easily fit inside a standard-sized kitchen cabinet.

Each of the small espresso machines we recommend above has a compact footprint and lightweight design. In our tests, we evaluated each espresso machine based on the below metrics:

• Setup: Each machine was subjected to three tests to evaluate the espresso machine's setup process performance in pulling espresso shots and steaming and frothing milk. And we even timed how long it took to complete the process.
• Ease of Use: The first test assessed the difficulty, time consumption, and beginner-friendliness of setting up the machine. We followed the manufacturer's instructions, familiarized ourselves with the machine's settings, and completed the cleaning/flushing cycle. It is important to us when recommending machines how difficult, time-consuming, and/or beginner-friendly the espresso machine is to set up for use since this is for the home. 
• Consistency: The second test evaluated the machine's consistency and ease of use when pulling espresso shots. We followed the manufacturer's instructions and any best practices for optimizing water temperature/preheating. Then, we made a double shot and programmed the settings accordingly, if applicable. We evaluated the crema, body, and taste of espresso. We subtracted for points if the espresso was under-extracted (watery body; thin, pale crema; too sour) or over-extracted (syrupy body; overly dark crema; too bitter). Well-balanced results earned top marks and positions at the top of our rankings. Each machine was used for a total of six shots to adjust for user error and tweaks, which most machines will need.  
• Milk Frothing: The third and final test evaluated how well the machines steamed and frothed milk if the machines have that capability. We looked at temperature, the time it took to reach our desired result, and the frothing/steaming consistency. 

Whether you opt for manual, semi-automatic, or fully automatic, consider which machine type you’re most likely to actually use. Would you rather push a button or two and have a nice espresso, or are you up for the whole barista experience each time you want a coffee? Manual will, by trade, require more effort, but some people prefer it.

Versatility

What’s your favorite coffee drink? If you’re a black-coffee-only, sip-your-espresso-straight-up kind of person, finding a machine with a built-in milk frother probably doesn’t need to be your top priority. If you want to spice up your morning coffee with a frothy latte or cappuccino, consider a machine with various settings. 

“Pressure is necessary to produce the rich crema that is only found in espresso,” says Calatrello. “This pressure refers to atmospheric pressure and is measured in bars. There are many machines that advertise 15-, 18-, or even 20-bar pressure, but in reality, nine bars is the perfect amount of pressure for espresso.”

Espresso machines can be bulky, especially if they include additional accessories like a milk frother, detachable grinder, or a water reservoir tank. Although we included the dimensions for each model above, make sure you shop according to your available storage or countertop space.

Frequently Asked Questions

Each machine will operate a bit differently, so be sure to consult the instruction manual to make sure you’re able to make the most of your espresso machine. Pod and capsule machines will typically operate by the push of a button after you’ve dropped in your pod of choice, whereas more conventional machines will require a more hands-on approach.

With a manual machine, you will have to measure and grind your beans, add water to the machine, tamp the grounds to lay flat in the bed, reassemble the machine with the grounds-filled lever, and pull your first shot. Machines will, of course, vary, so be sure to read the instructions fully.

Again, check your instruction manual first, but you can typically run a descaling solution (or a 50/50 mixture of water and distilled vinegar) through the machine every month or two — depending on how frequently you use your machine — to keep it in great condition.

“For espresso, you want a fine grind,” says Calatrello. “The ground coffee will look a little finer than table salt. This grind size will work for espresso machines as well as stovetops (Moka pot) and Aeropress coffee makers.”

There’s approximately 63 mg of caffeine in a shot of espresso. Typically, an 8-ounce cup of coffee offers around 96 mg of caffeine, making a single cup of coffee stronger than a single shot of espresso.
