16 Best Things to Do in Denver

By Megan Barber and Nicholas DeRenzo

exterior of Denver Art Museum. Metal facade. Skyline in background. Clear sky.

If you’ve always thought of the Mile High City as simply a gateway to Colorado’s world-famous ski resorts , you’re still thinking of the old Denver. The capital has spent the past two decades coming into its own as one of America’s most progressive and creative cities, with a host of top-notch museums, wildlife-filled green spaces, and a slew of up-and-coming neighborhoods filled with food halls, street art, and buzzy design hotels. And you’ve probably heard a little something about the craft beer scene, which is now matched by equally exceptional distilleries and even urban wineries. Here are our picks for the best things to do in Denver.

United States Colorado Denver Attraction Denver Union Station

Denver Union Station Arrow

Union Station, Denver's so-called “living room,” sits in the center of Lower Downtown. It's a busy transit center with an outdoor play fountain, patio-filled restaurants, and boutiques. But this is all new; for decades the historic Beaux Arts building—first constructed in 1881 before several fires required renovations in 1914—was a desolate and run-down train station. A $54 million restoration and a dedicated train to the airport changed all that, and the station’s Grand Hall has returned to its glory days. Tourists and locals alike come to gawk at the historic architecture, linger over drinks, or enjoy community events, including a weekend farmer’s market. Grab a farm-to-table dinner at Mercantile Dining & Provision, then finish the night slinging cocktails at the Terminal Bar.

Meow Wolf: Convergence Station Arrow

Meow Wolf installations are, by design, indescribable. Three hundred artists, including more than 110 from Colorado, collaborated on 79 projects, spread over four floors, to create a loud, neon-lit dreamscape that has something important to say if you scratch beneath the surface of the surreal, Instagram-friendly tableaus. Hidden catacomb passageways, trash-strewn cityscapes, alien bodegas and pizza parlors, and tons of Easter eggs about Denver culture and history allude to big-picture topics like accessibility and Indigenous rights. As the Denver Convergence Station iteration of Meow Wolf warns on its website, the exhibit features “dark spaces, low lighting, low overhangs, tight spaces, crawl spaces, narrow walkways, steep stairways, flashing/strobe lights, theatrical fog effects, music, some loud noises, and exposed materials.” In other words, be prepared for everything—especially if you’re claustrophobic or hate crowds.

United States Colorado Denver Museum Denver Art Museum

Denver Art Museum Arrow

Serious art lovers, this one’s for you. The city’s biggest art museum is a bustling hub at the center of the Golden Triangle Creative District known for both its vast permanent collection and its blockbuster temporary exhibitions. But just because art aficionados can geek out on everything from the 1971 Gio Ponti building to colorful, large-format murals, that doesn’t mean the DAM is reserved for stuffy nerds in sweater vests. No, the best part of the DAM is that art experts and novices can both find things to love. An extensive collection of Native American Art is one of the best in the world; Claude Monet’s “Waterloo Bridge” stops people in their tracks; and kids will enjoy hunting down the family-friendly activity centers scattered throughout the building. Grab a map at the entrance and don’t forget to check out the first floor gift shop for a treasure trove of glimmering vases and artsy gifts.

Red Rocks Amphitheater Denver

Red Rocks Amphitheatre Arrow

There’s a reason Red Rocks is considered one of the most beautiful outdoor music venues in the country. Bright red sandstone rocks jut out from either side of the stage to create a natural amphitheater with truly remarkable acoustics, and concert-goers are treated to views of downtown Denver and the surrounding foothills. Even if you can’t see a concert, Red Rocks is worth visiting; fitness groups often run the stairs of the amphitheater on the weekend and the 1.4-mile Trading Post Trail rewards hikers with brilliant rock formations and valley views.

United States Colorado Denver Attraction Larimer Square

Larimer Square Arrow

Picture the prettiest street in any city: wide sidewalks, red brick buildings, and restaurant patios full of well-dressed 30-somethings sipping wine. Boutique storefronts threaten your pocketbook, twinkle lights sparkle at night, and a pie shop hides a Prohibition-era “speakeasy” Green Russell , named for a Colorado gold miner. This is Larimer Square, the city’s first historic district. And even though you haven’t really been to the Mile High City unless you’ve Instagrammed the street’s signature twinkling lights—pro tip, they look especially amazing around the holidays—Larimer Square somehow manages to remain an authentic, non-touristy destination.

The Beer Spa Arrow

Colorado’s first beer-themed spa opened this February in a residential area near Denver's RiNo (River North Art District). Owners Damien Zouaoui and Jessica French were inspired to bring the beer spa concept back to the States after traveling through Eastern Europe, where many spots offer the chance to bathe in hot beer. In translating the idea for an American audience, they stripped out all the Mitteleuropa kitsch and modernized the concept, borrowing from Japanese and Korean spas. Rather than book a traditional spa treatment, you’re left to your own devices in the hushed but comfortable private therapy rooms. Begin the circuit in the infrared sauna, which can reach up to 170-degree Fahrenheit, and extend the relaxation with an optional session in a zero-gravity massage chair that scans your body, tilts you back, and then comes at you from all angles like some kind of super-relaxing robotic carwash.

United States Colorado Denver Museum Clyfford Still Museum

Clyfford Still Museum Arrow

If there’s one museum that surprises you in the Mile High City, our money’s on the Clyfford Still Museum. At first glance, your eyes might slide over the imposing, cantilevered concrete building located adjacent to the much larger Denver Art Museum in the Golden Triangle. But don’t miss this rarely crowded, under-the-radar gem. Inside, a 3,200-piece collection focuses on the life and work of Clyfford Still, a modern artist famous for his groundbreaking abstract paintings. Spacious exhibition halls guide you chronologically through Still’s body of work, beginning with small sketches and landscape paintings from the 1920s and culminating in colorful canvases from the 1950s that cover the whole wall. This is a museum that educates without pretension; conversational placards prompt visitors to look at specific lines or colors in each painting and well-placed benches are the perfect place to contemplate Still’s influential contribution to the modern art movement.

United States Colorado Denver Attraction Denver Botanical Gardens

Denver Botanic Gardens Arrow

Set on 24 acres in the tree-lined Cheesman Park neighborhood, the Denver Botanic Gardens is a peaceful oasis that's perfect for a one- or two-hour stroll. Gravel and stone paths meander through dozens of different types of gardens, from drought-tolerant xeriscaping to a traditional Japanese garden. Don’t miss the rotating exhibits that showcase internationally recognized artwork peeking out from behind the plants, a socially distanced alternative to the city's museums . Also, be on the lookout for a giant orange- and red-glass Chihuly sculpture and So Proud of My Children , a carved stone piece depicting maternal love by Zimbabwean artist Nicholas Kadzungura. Plant lovers won't ever want to leave.

Kirkland Museum of Fine Decorative Art Denver

Kirkland Museum of Fine & Decorative Art Arrow

Unlike other museums in Denver, the Kirkland is organized salon-style, displaying everything from Andy Warhol paintings to chairs designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. The international decorative art collection spans every major design period since 1870, but the museum is at its best displaying the work of Colorado’s most distinguished painter: Vance Kirkland. The museum moved Kirkland’s original three-room studio eight blocks to its new location, and visitors can tour the space that the artist worked on his famous abstract and dot paintings. It’s now a stone’s throw from the Denver Art Museum , making it easy to visit both in a day.

Default

Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge Arrow

Colorado is chock full of national and state parks, but you don’t have to venture far from the Mile High City to immerse yourself in one of the state’s most wildlife-rich green spaces. Located about a 10-minute drive northeast of downtown, this 11-mile wildlife drive cuts through open prairie, past waterfowl-filled lakes, over creeks, and through fields of wildflowers. Think of it as one of those drive-through theme park safaris, but instead of elephants and giraffes, you might spot mule deer, coyotes, prairie dogs, or even the continent’s most-endangered mammal, black-footed ferrets, which were reintroduced in 2015.

alley way lit up by Christmas lights overhead

Dairy Block Arrow

In the early 20th-century, the Windsor Farm Dairy Building, in what’s now called LoDo, used to churn out butter, cheese, and milk, but these days it offers the cream of a different crop as the city’s trendiest new “micro-hood.” Within the space of one compact square block in the shadow of Coors Field, the development includes a hotel, a coworking space, shops, restaurants, bars, and a food hall. Make time to explore the pedestrian-friendly Alley, which slices through the block like a narrow canyon and is lined with unique hangouts, like Blanchard Family Wines and Deviation Distilling, where the Mountain Herb Gin is made with wild-foraged juniper and spruce tips. Don’t miss BØH—the counter-service counterpart to Latin tasting-menu restaurant spot Brutø—for tacos, tortas, tostadas and excellent Mexican-inspired cocktails.

United States Colorado Denver Park City Park

City Park Arrow

City Park, a sprawling 330-acre park east of Downtown Denver, is way more than green space—it’s also home to the Denver Zoo and the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. Manicured gardens and two scenic lakes show off views of the city skyline, and paths attract walkers, runners, and bikers. A Spanish-style pavilion in the center is often used as an event space, and its columns, arches, and waterfront location also make it a photogenic backdrop. For an epic sunset, park at the museum and walk west around the building toward Ferrill Lake. On the way, you’ll pass a kids' splash fountain and a playground; from there, you’ll see the sunset with the lake, city skyline, and Rocky Mountains all glowing in magic-hour light.

Downtown Brewery Trail Walk Great Divide Brewing Company

Downtown Brewery Trail Walk Arrow

There are plenty of organized brewery tours in Denver , but it's just as easy (and maybe more fun) to create your own thanks to this interactive beer ma p put out by the city. Downtown has a high concentration of quality tasting rooms, and we suggest starting at Wynkoop Brewing Company , Denver’s first craft brewery. Next, make your way to Jagged Mountain Craft Brewery for modern takes on traditional ales. Then it’s time for a heavy-hitter on the Denver beer scene: Great Divide Brewing Company . Finally, finish up at Woods Boss , a relative newcomer on the Denver scene that goes all in on Colorado kitsch.

The Tattered Cover Denver

Tattered Cover Book Store Arrow

Denver’s best independent bookstore has been a community gathering place since 1971. In an era when online sales threaten brick-and-mortar stores everywhere, the Tattered Cover has thrived. It now has multiple locations—including an outpost at LoDo’s gleaming new McGregor Square district, across the street from Coors Field—thanks to knowledgeable staff, comfy armchairs, and a lively event series that hosts well-known authors for seminars. There are all types of books here, but don’t miss the curated selection of staff picks, all marked with handwritten notes that detail why a reader might like the book. A whimsical children’s section and an array of calendars and paper supplies make buying housewarming gifts here a no-brainer.

Denver Zoo Denver

Denver Zoo Arrow

The 80-acre Denver Zoo campus is a mostly outdoor journey on wide, well-spaced paths to see over 3,000 animals. Recent renovations make certain exhibits feel like you’ve taken a trip away from the city for the day . The Stingray Cove exhibit, opened in 2020, is an open-air interactive experience that lets you touch and feed cownose and southern stingrays as they swim around a 15,000-gallon tank. An extra $5 admission fee gets you into the exhibit with one piece of food to feed, and the space also showcases bamboo and bonnethead sharks. Another don’t-miss exhibit is Predator Ridge, a five-acre recreation of the African savanna that rotates African lions, spotted hyenas, and African wild dogs through the enclosures.

Default

The Source Market Hall Arrow

When it opened in an 1880s iron foundry on the edge of downtown in 2013, The Source food hall signaled a sea change for the former industrial zone that would blossom into the RiNo Arts District. Five years later, the historic brick complex welcomed an attached 100-room hotel, done up in polished concrete and Baltic birch, with an outpost of New Belgium Brewing dedicated to barrel-aged beers. Today, the twin “market halls”—one in the original building, one in the new tower—house various food stalls and design shops, plus a barbershop, a florist, and a vintage store. Standouts include Reunion Bread Co. , where baker Ismael De Sousa turns out incredible Venezuelan- and Portuguese-inspired pastries (try the golfeados, walnut-studded sticky buns topped, improbably, with cotija cheese), and Safta , an Israeli stunner from James Beard Award winner Alon Shaya.

If you’re a baseball fan, catching a game at Coors Field is a must-do while in Denver. The stadium offers stunning views of the Rocky Mountains, and the experience of watching a game here is like no other.

Plus, what better way to see the Coors Effect in action? Basically, this term came to be because, at the elevation of Coors Field (and Denver), the balls tend to fly here like no other. It’s worth witnessing in person!

Similar to seeing the Avalanche, wait for the price of tickets to drop right on game day on apps like Gametime. We’ve snagged tickets as low as $12 on there before!

See a Colorado Rapids Game

The Colorado Rapids are a professional soccer team here in Denver. They play their home games at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colorado. The Rapids were founded in 1996, so the team is still fairly new!

Since their founding, the Rapids have won the MLS Cup once in 2010. The amount of support at these games is higher than we’ve witnessed at any other stadium here in Denver. Plus, none of the seats are bad!

Walk around the Denver Botanic Gardens

large greenhouse at a botanical garden

The Denver Botanic Gardens is a must-see for anyone visiting the Mile High City. With many plants from all over the world, it’s one of the best botanic gardens to visit in Colorado.

Even if you’re not a plant lover, the gardens are still worth a visit for their beauty and serenity.

One of the best things to do at the Denver Botanic Gardens is to take a stroll through it all. We recommend grabbing a map and just exploring. There are lots of hidden spots throughout the garden that you’ll wander upon.

If you’re looking for something a little more active, the Denver Botanic Gardens also offers yoga classes, botanical art classes, and gardening workshops.

Boat in Washington Park

Washington Park is one of the most popular parks in Denver, Colorado, and for good reason.

The park is home to a beautiful lake where you can go boating, paddleboarding, or simply relax on the shore. There is a place right by the water where you can rent these by the hour. Try to go earlier in the day, because in the afternoon, it gets hot in the sun!

There are also plenty of walking and biking trails to explore, as well as a playground and picnic area. Washington Park is the perfect place to spend a day outdoors with friends or family.

Have drinks at a rooftop bar

Rooftop bars offer stunning views of the cityscape, and they’re a great place to enjoy the warm weather. And what’s more, Denver has some of the best rooftop bars in the country, in our opinion!

Some great ones include Avanti , Tap Fourteen , and 54Thirty Rooftop . There are also quite a few downtown in Lodo heading towards RiNo.

Go shopping in Cherry Creek

Cherry Creek is one of the best places to shop in Denver. It is an upscale neighborhood with a variety of shops and boutiques.

You can also eat at Denver Biscuit Co here, which serves over-the-top biscuit sandwiches!

The marketplace is located in an old airplane hangar, so it has a really cool industrial vibe. In addition to the food vendors, there are also several shops selling things like clothes, jewelry, and home goods.

The marketplace regularly hosts events like live music, farmers’ markets, and craft fairs.

Situated just south of RiNo, Lodo is home to a variety of businesses, restaurants, bars, and entertainment venues. The area is home to Coors Field and Union Station, too! If you’re staying in a hotel, you’re most likely staying in LoDo.

Take the time to walk around this neighborhood and see what you stumble upon. You never know what you might find!

Plus, it can be a lot of fun to browse the different stalls and see all the different kinds of fruits and vegetables that are available.

Farmer’s markets are typically held on weekends, so if you’re visiting Denver on a weekend, be sure to check out one of the city’s many farmer’s markets.

Some of the best include the Cherry Creek Farmer’s Market , the Boulder Farmer’s Market , and the Denver Union Station Farmer’s Market .

Have a bite to eat at the Denver Central Market

People walking in front of a building that says Denver Central Market.

The Denver Central Market is a great place to eat, and it’s located right in the beautiful RiNo. The market offers a wide variety of food options, so you’re sure to find something to your taste.

Once you peruse the market and grab whatever food you’d like (we absolutely love and suggest Green Seed for smoothies), find a spot to eat by the street art outside the market.

Check out the sealife at the Denver Aquarium

turtles sitting on a log at an aquarium

If you find yourself in Denver, then you absolutely must visit the world-renowned Denver Aquarium . While many people visit here to try out the restaurant (which is consistently voted as one of the best places to eat in Denver), the aquarium itself is fun, too.

Head upstairs and walk from exhibit to exhibit. Take your time; there are lots of signs throughout the aquarium where you can learn more. Surprise, but there is a tiger there too!

You can also consider going on one of the Denver Aquarium free days.

Bike the Cherry Creek Trail

The Denver Trolley costs $7 for adults or $3 for children under 13 and over 4, as children under 4 are free. It stops at the Denver Children’s Museum and also the aquarium. Note that they only stop on the southbound part of the ride.

Golf at Urban Putt

Located in Lodo, Urban Putt is one of our favorite hidden gems . This indoor golf course has two different courses set up to replicate parts of Denver! Golf through Denver International Airport, downtown, and even Red Rocks.

Visit during the day to avoid the rush from happy hour. This is fun for both kids and adults, no matter how many times you go! (We’ve gone a handful of times and plan on going many more.)

Eat a burrito at D’Corozan

smothered burrito, chips and salsa, and queso on a table

D’Corazan is one of the best places to get a burrito in Denver ! We ate here during our first-ever trip to Denver, and since moving here, it’s where we go all the time.

Their cheesy queso with green chile has a nice spice but is incredibly tasty. Their a la carte beef burritos are also so delicious. Order both at the same time and put some of the queso on the burrito for a real treat.

This restaurant is located downtown, so if you’re exploring 16th Street, this is a great place to go to escape the commercial restaurants and eat local.

Drive the Peak to Peak Highway

One of the best things to do in the Denver area is to drive the Peak to Peak Highway . The highway connects Estes Park to Black Hawk and Central City. The views from the road are simply breathtaking, making it one of the most popular scenic drives in Colorado.

Best things to do in Denver

Denver Art Museum

1.  Denver Art Museum

Along with the architecture of internationally renowned visionaries Giò Ponti and Daniel Libeskind, the Denver Art Museum (DAM) is perhaps best known for its holdings in Native and Western American art. Though the DAM might lean heavily on its Rocky Mountain roots, its collections cover the entire spectrum. Seek out, for instance, Monet’s  Waterloo Bridge  and Sandy Skoglund’s startling large-scale installation  Fox Games , depicting a fantastical dining room.

Denver Botanic Gardens

2.  Denver Botanic Gardens

With dozens of horticulturally distinct collections set indoors and out on 20-plus acres, the Denver Botanic Gardens is an oasis in what is, after all, the high desert. Here you can peruse thousands of plant species from across the globe, from cacti to rainforest orchids. It’s also a cultural and educational center, regularly hosting art exhibits, plant shows, gardening classes, and more. As you explore, take a breather and check out glass wizard Dale Chihuly’s Colorado, which graces the pond in the Ellipse Garden.

Red Rocks Park & Amphitheatre

3.  Red Rocks Park & Amphitheatre

The ever-so-dramatic sweep of its rugged sandstone formations has made Red Rocks a beloved venue for concerts of all stripes since its inauguration in 1941. In 1983, a little-known Irish band happened to film a performance at what you might call nature’s own music hall—and the rest, as U2 fans know, is rock history. Of course, it also serves as one of the world’s most breathtaking gyms, where runners get super-sweaty tackling the seemingly endless staircases, and hikers hit the trails through the surrounding 868-acre park.

SoBo

4.  SoBo

The Platt Park stretch of South Broadway (SoBo) has long been known as Antique Row for its wealth of dealers in everything from folk art to furniture. You can shop for vintage wares, weed, or both: SoBo is also called the Green Mile, reflecting the influx of marijuana dispensaries. The quirky shopping experience only gets funkier as you head north into the Baker District, where boutiques like  Decade , a source for up-and-coming designer labels, skew as hip as the nearby eateries.

MCA Denver

5.  MCA Denver

Founded in 1996, the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) moved into its permanent and larger home (27,000 square feet) in 2007. With works displayed across five galleries, a shop, a library, and a rooftop cafe, the space is as pretty as a picture (although we can't guarantee that all the pictures will be pretty). Comical, creepy, racy, relentless… Whatever else they may be, exhibitions at the MCA are always provocative. In fact, according to MCA Denver themselves, their exhibits seek to create 'understanding and dialog about the art of our time.'

Union Station

6.  Union Station

After a historic redevelopment, LoDo’s turn-of-the-century terminal is once again a destination for architecture buffs, scenesters, foodies, and rail riders. Absorb the Beaux Arts aura of the majestic, barrel-vaulted Great Hall while sipping local craft beers in the retro-toned  Terminal Bar  or cocktails on the mezzanine of the glamorous  Cooper Lounge . Score a seat at  Stoic & Genuine’s  chef’s counter to indulge in sharp twists on seafood classics, or treat yourself to a feast at  Mercantile Dining & Provision , where farmhouse substance meets cosmopolitan style.

The Source

7.  The Source

This epicurean food hall became an instant landmark when it opened in 2013 with a dream team of vendors. The food and drink are top-notch. To cite highlights would be misleading; that said, an order of brisket nachos at  Smok  and a croissant churro with dulce de leche from  Reunion Bread Co . are among the absolute musts.

Molly Brown House Museum

8.  Molly Brown House Museum

Saved from demolition in 1970, visitors to this Victorian manor will find the docents’ stories about the Titanic survivor’s years as an actress and a civil-rights activist no less compelling than the opulent period decor. Her famous unsinkability aside, Margaret Brown led a remarkable life for a woman of her time. The Molly Brown House offers self-guided tours and special events throughout the year; Gothic-horror story hours, holiday teas, garden parties, and other corny-but-entertaining programs pop up every season.

Hiking near Denver

9.  Hiking near Denver

As (more-or-less) casual day trips go, you can’t beat hitting the trails around Golden and Boulder. Whether you choose one of the easygoing loops on Lookout Mountain or rugged climbs in Eldorado Canyon State Park and around the striking sandstone formations known as the Flatirons, you'll be treated to stellar natural vistas. While you wander amid ponderosa pines and Indian paintbrush, keep your eyes peeled for mule deer and monarchs (never mind rattlesnakes and black bears).

Empower Field at Mile High

10.  Empower Field at Mile High

The stomping ground of the Denver Broncos also made history when it hosted Barack Obama’s acceptance speech during the Democratic National Convention in 2008. Tailgate on the south side, stomp your feet to create 'mile-high thunder; and join a chorus of 76,000 yelling 'in-com-plete!' to show your support for the Broncos. On a guided tour, learn a bevy of stats while visiting the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame Museum and getting a player’s-eye view of the end zone—something even non-fans get a charge out of.

Clyfford Still Museum

11.  Clyfford Still Museum

This single-artist museum warrants intricate exploration, not only to view almost the entire oeuvre of the radical Abstract Expressionist Clyfford Still but to admire the masterful architecture as well. Dedicate at least an hour to the tranquil surroundings and the large-scale canvases that defined Still’s contribution to modern art.

Craft breweries

12.  Craft breweries

Roam the linked RiNo, Ballpark, and Five Points neighborhoods, and you’ll run the gamut of craft tipples, from suds to spirits. Boozin' brilliant. Buzzing little breweries like Mockery and Ratio  encircle granddaddy  Great Divide —but as you hop from one to the next, sampling chocolate rye scotch ale and passionfruit-guava goes, you’ll also (quite possibly literally) stumble on  Stem Ciders ,  Infinite Monkey Theorem  Urban Winery, and  Mile High Spirits .

The Beer Spa

13.  The Beer Spa

Here you can soak away your worries and/or have them massaged out in zero-gravity chairs and then sample a wide variety of Colorado’s craft brews all in one place. Makes you wonder; if this was made a mandatory part of the working week, everyone would probably be much nicer to each other. Check out the website for a complete list of what is on offer. They cater to singles, couples, and groups, so you have no excuse.

Mount Evans Scenic Byway

14.  Mount Evans Scenic Byway

The route from Idaho Springs to the top of Colorado’s 14th-tallest peak traverses some 7,000ft along the continent’s highest paved roadway. Possibly nerve-wracking and definitely slow-going yet breathtaking in every sense of the word, Mount Evans Scenic Byway takes you past alpine lakes and meadows, through bristlecone-pine stands and the habitats of elk and bighorn sheep; along the way, you can hike, fish, picnic and even snowshoe. The summit itself is accessible only in summer—and even then, the weather can turn nasty without warning.

Denver Museum of Nature & Science

15.  Denver Museum of Nature & Science

Adults aren’t just babysitters at this kid-friendly museum jam-packed with dinosaur skeletons, mummies, and IMAX 3D flicks. Naturally, kids go gaga, but plenty of the exhibits and planetarium appeal to all ages—think Dead Sea Scrolls, Russian folk carvings, or black holes. If you’re making a day of it, skip the onsite café in favor of a lakeside picnic in nearby City Park, also home to the  Denver Zoo .

Denver Performing Arts Complex

16.  Denver Performing Arts Complex

Believe it or not, downtown Denver contains one of the largest multi-venue performance centers in the world. Ballets, symphonies, operas, and touring Broadway shows are all staged here, but so are locally produced plays and the occasional rock concert. During the warmer months, all types of celebrations are held in the adjoining outdoor space, Sculpture Park, including the adorable Denver Public Schools  Shakespeare Festival .

Coors Field

17.  Coors Field

Sports fans and curious tourists will find plenty to do at the 76-acre field with spectacular views of the Rocky Mountains. Catching a baseball game isn't the only thing you can do on the Rockies' home turf; look for the row of purple seats marking the elevation that gives the Mile High City its name, then wash down some Rocky Mountain oysters (quickly, if you’ve never tried this infamous delicacy) with beer from the onsite brewery,  the SandLot .

Kirkland Museum of Fine Art

18.  Kirkland Museum of Fine Art

The Kirkland is a mesmerizing shrine to the decorative arts of the late 19th and 20th centuries. Peep iconic modernist furnishings (Irving Harper’s marshmallow sofa and Pierre Paulin’s ribbon chair) and exquisite Art Nouveau and Art Deco housewares. Located in the studio of its late namesake, Vance Kirkland, the collection is displayed salon-style—which means that visitors are surrounded on all sides by irreplaceable objet d'art as they wander through the galleries. Children under 13 are not admitted.

Larimer Square

19.  Larimer Square

Situated on Larimer Street between 14th and 15th, Larimer Square is the most bohemian block in town; this is the place to see and be seen. A gentle saunter down this pedestrianized street will allow you to catch up on your window shopping as you gaze through the glass of some swanky boutique stores, and afterward, you could dine at high-end restaurants like Osteria Marco or Rioja .

Ophelia’s Electric Soapbox

20.  Ophelia’s Electric Soapbox

Restaurateur Justin Cucci's atmospheric eatery in a former house of ill-repute dishes up globally influenced grub. Cucci has a knack for designing restaurants that owe some of their success to a quirky backstory; Ophelia’s Electric Soapbox is an eye-popping risqué tribute to its history, while what was once a mid-century garage now informs the vintage cool of  Root Down . Take it all in over a meal that showcases the Edible Beats restaurant group’s focus on earth- and lifestyle-conscious food and drinks.

Punch Bowl Social

21.  Punch Bowl Social

There are several spots in town where you can indulge your taste for booze and your inner child at the same time. Best of all is Punch Bowl Social, which boasts bowling lanes, an old-school arcade, karaoke rooms, two bars, and a mod diner. Apart from the undoubtedly bohemian-inspired decor, the activities have a touch of nostalgia that is nothing short of gratifying.

Best Times To Visit Denver

The best times to visit Denver are April through May and September through October. The city's shoulder seasons are characterized by comfortable temperatures, fewer tourists and lower accommodation prices than the summer high season. Denver welcomes the majority of its visitors between June and August when the weather is warm and arid; however, the rise in temps also leads to a rise in hotel rates. And despite its proximity to the Rocky Mountain ski areas, the Mile High City sees a drop-off in tourism during the winter months, which means you can score some great deals on rooms here.

Before you lock down your dates, be sure to take a look at Denver's events calendar. The Mile High City is a popular convention location, and ongoing events can affect room rates in the downtown area.

Larimer Square

A successful example of urban refurbishment in Denver is Larimer Square, with well-restored buildings of the Civil War period. In 1971, Larimer Square became Denver's first historic district. Today, it is a major entertainment district. The area is home to art galleries, shops, cheerful restaurants, and gas lamps.

It continues to evolve and is popular with both locals and tourists. During the day, most people come here to shop. In the evening, this is a great place for dining or seeing some live entertainment, such as comedians or bands. This area is also famous as the place where Buffalo Bill lived at one time.

Address: 1430 Larimer Street, Denver, Colorado

16th Street Mall

Running through the city center, the 16th Street Mall is a European-style pedestrian precinct, with shady trees, flowerbeds, and park benches. The only traffic here is a free shuttle bus.

The mall is lined with department stores, boutiques, souvenir shops, restaurants, and the stalls of street traders. Near the south end of the street are numerous modern and Post-Modern skyscrapers.

The mall was designed by the late world-famous architect I.M. Pei, the same architect that designed the pyramid at the Louvre in Paris. At night, the mall is illuminated by over one million lights, making it an ideal place to stroll on a warm summer evening.

Originally opened in 1982, the 16 th Street Mall is currently undergoing an overhaul that will create wider pedestrian walkways, modernize existing infrastructure, and introduce new art, among other objectives.

The renovations of this 13-block mall between Market Street and Broadway will take place in phases and are expected to be finished by late 2024. The area remains open during renovations, however.

Coors Field

Coors Field is the home of the Colorado Rockies baseball club. The stadium, which opened in 1995, has a seating capacity of 50,200. From the seats along the 1st base line, it's possible to see the Rocky Mountains in the distance.

Tours of the facility are available year-round and are a good way to learn about the stadium and see a bit of the behind-the-scenes action. Tickets are limited to a certain number each day, so advance purchases are a good idea. Tours last just under 1.5 hours and are accessible to those with disabilities.

Address: 20th and Blake Streets, Denver, Colorado

Museum of Nature & Science

The Denver Museum of Nature and Science sits in City Park's southeast corner and is one of Denver's top cultural attractions. Among the most notable exhibits are the imposing dinosaur skeletons, remains of Ice Age animals, the collection of minerals presented by the Coors family, and one of the largest nuggets of gold found in Colorado.

The museum features changing exhibitions, so there is always something new to see. An IMAX theater and a Planetarium are also on-site. When you've finished wandering this museum, take time to check out City Park, which is popular with locals, and hosts a free summer jazz concert series.

The Space Odyssey exhibit has been renovated and revitalized and is now better than ever. You'll be able to step into the new Fantasy Spaceship and fulfill your dreams of blasting off into space.

  • Nearby, and also in a great location is Aloft , with a modern look and trendy feel.

Budget Hotels :

  • The Days Inn is on the periphery of the city center, either a long walk or short drive from the main downtown area.
  • If you are willing to drive 30 minutes, the Comfort Inn is well outside the city center but offers quality rooms at budget prices.

Joining an organized tour is a great way to see all the highlights of Denver and its surrounding mountains without the hassle of finding your way around. Along the way, you'll learn fascinating stories about the city's history and the ecology of the surrounding areas. These tours include convenient hotel pickup and drop-off, saving you time and money. Below are some fun sightseeing tours and day trips that guarantee the lowest price:

Take a Day Trip:

  • Soaring mountains surround Denver, and a convenient way to experience this alpine wilderness is on the Discover Rocky Mountain National Park from Denver or Boulder . Accompanied by the narration of an expert guide, this tour takes you in an air-conditioned coach across the Continental Divide, reaching altitudes of up to 12,000 feet. After exploring Estes Park and passing by the famous Stanley Hotel, you can look for wildlife such as bighorn sheep and black bears in Rocky Mountain National Park. The tour includes admission to the park, lunch, and hotel pickup.
  • If you're short on time but still want to venture into the wilderness, consider the Foothills Explorer Tour From Denver . This four-hour adventure includes a visit to Red Rocks park, a natural amphitheater; a drive through the scenic Lariat Loop, where you can look for wildlife; and stops at the Buffalo Bill Museum and Grave and the historic town of Evergreen. Hotel pickup and entrance fees are also included.

Summit a 14neer :

  • From Idaho Springs, the highest mountain road in the U.S. runs steeply up past the beautifully situated Echo Lake to the alpine pastures on Mount Evans (14,266 feet). From the summit, there are breathtaking panoramic views out over the mountains and valley below. A variety of wildlife also frequents the area. At these elevations, it is not uncommon to see mountain goats, bighorn sheep, marmots, and pika. The Mount Evans Highway (State Highway 5) is a seasonal road, which is closed during the winter months, usually reopening in late May. Opening dates may be weather dependent. Mount Evans gets particularly busy on summer weekends. Weekdays and early mornings are some of the less visited hours and maybe a better option for people looking to escape large crowds.

One Day in Denver: How to (Easily) Plan A Super Fun Denver Itinerary

last Updated: March 24, 2023 colorado denver

FYI: Affiliate links may be sprinkled throughout the awesome, free content you see below. I’ll receive a small commission when you purchase from my links (at no extra cost to you), which I’ll totally blow on adult things like boba tea and avocado toast. As always, thanks for the support.

Headed to the Mile High City and planning to spend just one day in Denver? Follow this Denver itinerary for all the top sights and best eats!

Although you’ll wanna stay a few days to devour everything in sight – I promise!

visit to denver

Before planning out this Denver itinerary, I honestly had zero clue as to how hip of a city it is. I kinda expected it to feel a bit like Portland, Oregon (which is one of my PNW faves) and maybe even Austin, Texas (just a little bit), but was blown away by all the color and charm. AND the food!

I actually visited a friend who lives in Denver a few years ago, but with all the day trips we took , I hardly had any time to actually explore within the city limits! This time around, I made sure to devote at least one day in Denver.

And what a packed day it was!

Who knew the capital of Colorado was so colorful and cool, hip and trendy? There’s thriving craft breweries, tons of cultural attractions, a wild music scene (Red Rocks amphitheatre, anyone?!), and a hot culinary scene fit for any foodie.

And plus, there’s phenomenal views of the Rockies , the best mountain range in America. No wonder it’s an extremely fun (and popular) city to live in!

One Day in Denver: How to (Easily) Plan A Super Fun Denver Itinerary

And yes, you really can see so much with just one day in Denver – I promise! The city’s the perfect size to explore for those with a short amount of time (just like Charleston!). And I can see it being quite a fun city to explore solo as well!

It’s also a great base for exploring the snow-capped Rocky Mountains and the red rocks of Colorado Springs (both nearby!). If you’ve got at least 2 days in Denver, I encourage you to get outta the city → here’s ten day trips from Denver to pick from!

Because of Denver’s high altitude, it’s also known as the Mile High City. And yes, as the city’s nickname suggests, Denver is approximately one mile above sea level. To put that in perspective, New York City is 33 feet above sea level and San Francisco is 52 feet above sea level, compared to Denver’s whopping 5,280 feet.

Yup, you read that right: five THOUSAND and two hundred and eighty feet above sea level.

Psst — Read my tips below to ensure a safe visit, as it’s located at a much higher elevation than you’re probably used to. And no one wants to suffer from headaches and nausea on their one and only day in Denver.

When to Visit Denver:

Unlike certain parts of California (I’m looking at you San Francisco), Denver is lucky to experience all 4 seasons. But whenever you visit, you’ll probably get a fair bit of sunshine (as the city gets over 300 days of sun a year!). So bring those sunnies along — yes, even in winter!

SPRING AND FALL

Spring and fall are known to be the most popular times to visit the Mile High City. We chose to spend our one day in Denver in mid-October, hoping for some fall colors and cool, crisp air. Instead, it was in the low 80s and only a handful of leaves had changed colors.

So much for my fall foliage trip!

With that being said, it’s so hard to predict when autumn will come! And locals have told me that fall is actually quite short in Denver, so just plan to enjoy whatever weather you get (and don’t pack too far in advance).

Surprisingly, winters in Denver are pretty mild, so if you don’t mind some chilly weather and a tad bit of snow (just maybe!), a visit between November and March may be perfect for you.

It never really reaches freezing temperatures during the day (unlike Banff National Park in Canada !), even during the coldest month of December (with an average daily high of 45 degrees F). And sunny, 60 degree days are not uncommon in winter – how awesome is that?!

However, don’t expect Denver to cure all your winter wonderland icicle dreams — head to Rocky Mountain National Park for that!

Summer isn’t crazy hot, humidity is low, and the evenings are cool and comfortable. Why such mild weather? The high altitude! I’d still bring a light jacket for nights since the mountain air can bring an unexpected crisp to it!

How to Get to Denver:

Denver really couldn’t be easier to access. And I mean it. (Unlike the San Blas Islands in Panam a → now, that was a doozy.)

Most visitors will arrive at Denver International Airport (DEN), a short flight no matter which coast you’re coming from(~2 hours from San Francisco ; ~3.5 hours from New York City ).

I was surprised to learn that DEN is the 5th busiest airport in the US, and 16th busiest in the world! Whoa!

Local Tip: If you’re absolutely starving when you reach the airport, head to Root Down in Concourse C, one of Denver’s most beloved farm-to-table bistros. And just FYI — The original location is in Lower Highlands (LoHi) if you’re not hungry just yet.

Little Man Ice Cream has a small outpost here as well, so you can be sure you’ll never go hungry in the airport.

How to Get Around Denver:

City Transportation: There’s no intricate subway station in Denver like in NYC, but thankfully, there’s enough public transport to get around easily. There’s the free 16th Street Mall Shuttle (running up and down 16th Street – surprise, surprise), pedicabs around town (especially near Larimer Square), and even scooters available for use almost everywhere.

We saw oh so many scooters! Just shows how fun and young Denver really is!

Car : Since we were taking a few day trips from Denver on our most recent visit, we had a car during our one day in Denver. Parking was never an issue, and we actually preferred being able to quickly head to places (plus it was pretty hot midday).

However, if you’re planning to spend all your time in Denver, I honestly wouldn’t recommend renting a car. It’s not even 50% necessary, so why bother with the extra expense? And plus, we had to fork over unnecessary $$$ for overnight parking since our hotel had no cheap options.

Walking : No access to a car?! Don’t fret in the least bit. You can easily walk (almost) everywhere, or take a quick Uber/Lyft between spots. I planned this one day Denver itinerary for those without a car, and included walking times between the different attractions.

How to Get from the airport to downtown Denver itself:

Getting from the airport to your hotel in downtown Denver couldn’t be easier. Like really, it’s so easy!

Option 1: Light Rail

Once you get off the plane, look out for the Light Rail train (it’s right near the new Westin Airport Hotel). And don’t worry, you won’t get on the wrong line (something I typically worry about the first time I’m arriving into a big city!).

You’ll be taking The University of Colorado A Line (or simply the A Line) train, the only line at the airport. The train costs $10.50 per person, each way, and takes roughly 40 minutes from the airport to downtown Denver.

The A Line comes every 15-30 minutes, running all day (minus 2 hours from 1am to 3:15am in the morning). Make sure to buy a ticket in advance at the vending machine on the platform!

You’ll get off at the last stop – Union Station (in downtown Denver), where you can either walk to your hotel or take an uber (depending on how close your hotel is of course). We stayed at the Hyatt Regency near the Convention Center and had about a 20 minute walk or so.

Option 2: Rideshare (Uber/Lyft)

If money is no object (or you have TONS of luggage and/or a big family), an Uber may be your best bet. However, it’ll set you back at least $60 or so (plus/minus a few bucks depending on where exactly your hotel is).

I don’t recommend it unless you’ve really got a thing against public transportation.

And psst – regular cabs are about the same price, at a set price of $51 + $4.57 gate fee + $5 each additional drop.

Where to Stay in Denver:

If you’ve only got one day in Denver, I highly recommend staying in downtown Denver, in either Lower Downtown (LoDo) or the Central Business District (CBD).

You can walk to other neighborhoods from Downtown Denver, but it’s the most central, which is why I suggest getting a hotel there.

One Day in Denver: How to (Easily) Plan A Super Fun Denver Itinerary

We stayed at the Hyatt Regency Denver at Colorado Convention Center in the CBD, which was a short 10 minute walk to Larimer Square and smack dab in the middle of the city center. We liked staying near Larimer Square since we could easily walk to a whole bunch of restaurants and bars at night. The Hyatt was in a prime location (and moderately priced!), and we could walk anywhere in the city if we wanted.

And plus – you won’t need a car since everything on this one day in Denver itinerary is walkable from downtown! And downtown is where most of the city’s main attractions are located.

High Rated Hotels in Lower Downtown (LoDo):

  • Kimpton Hotel Born : Stylish suites in a chic hotel with FREE loaner bikes and Italian dining (and around the block from chicken and waffles at Tupelo Honey!)
  • The Ramble (technically in the RiNo district): Industrial chic, fashionable dining in refined quarters, and French balconies (!!!). Next time I’m staying here.
  • The Maven Hotel at Dairy Block : A hip hotel offering modern rooms, city views, a polished restaurant, and a cocktail bar.

Top Rated Hotels in the Central Business District (CBD):

  • Hyatt Regency Denver at Colorado Convention Center : Contemporary property with a top-floor bar and an indoor pool and spa
  • Kimpton Hotel Monaco Denver : Posh boutique hotel with vibrant rooms, spa and restaurant, and FREE wine hour (!!!)
  • Four Seasons Hotel Denver : Upscale luxury in a posh high-rise with chic suites with city views, plus a spa, fine dining, and a pool
  • The Brown Palace Hotel and Spa : A lauded 1892 landmark, with modern luxury touches and old-world decor. Plus high tea (!!!), fine dining, and a spa. AND it was Elvis’ favorite hotel.

Other Areas to Stay:

  • If you’re looking to visit Denver on a budget, consider staying in Capitol Hill. It’s great for those on a tight budget as there are plenty of budget accommodations here, including the highly rated Ember Hostel !). One of my friends stayed at The Art Hotel Denver, Curio Collection (over here as well) and really liked it!
  • Want a tad more luxury outside the busy city center? Consider Cherry Creek! It’s only 10 minutes (by car) to Downtown Denver, and the entire area is just gorgeous! Don’t miss the roof-top pool of The Jacquard Autograph Collection , or the JW Marriott Denver at Cherry Creek .

Layover in Denver:

Don’t have time for a full day in Denver? The city’s airport-to-downtown rail line makes for a super easy layover IF you have plenty of time. I mean, hanging out in Denver sounds much more fun than wasting a few hours at the airport.

Although, there are quite a few restaurants to hit up at the airport if your next flight leaves in a few hours. You’ll find favorites, Little Man Ice Cream and Root Down, both at the airport.

Honestly, it’s not wise to leave the airport unless you REALLY have ample time, say at least 6 hours or so. Hey, you don’t wanna miss your next flight, now do you?!

One Day in Denver: How to (Easily) Plan A Super Fun Denver Itinerary

With about a 6-7 hour layover, you’ll have about 2-3 hours in the city itself (plan at least an hour from plane to Union Station – door to door – on the light rail, and aim to grab the light rail back about 3 hours or so before your next flight leaves.

While a few hours doesn’t give you time to cover all the attractions on this Denver in one day itinerary, you could check out Union Station, find your favorite book at Tattered Cover, walk over the pedestrian bridges into Confluence Park, and grab some iconic ice cream at Little Man.

Just remember it’s about 40 minutes each way (with trains coming about every 15 minutes), so give yourself enough time to get back before your next flight.

Additional Tips for visiting Denver:

  • Plan to smell a lot of pot/marijuana as it’s legal to buy weed in Colorado (although it’s actually NOT legal to smoke it in public places – which many people don’t know).
  • Pack layers, since the weather changes frequently, and fast! And always pack sunscreen!
  • Along with any big city, expect to see a relatively large homeless population. We came across many in the Capitol Hill neighborhood, near the Capitol building.

An Important Note on Denver’s high altitude:

Denver isn’t called the Mile High City for nothing! The high altitude can cause your skin to get dry, really quickly. I made sure to carry around a small bottle of hydrating lotion and chapstick!

You may experience Altitude Sickness. And yes, it’s a real thing, and affects everyone differently. We didn’t feel the effects (surprisingly, since we both got massive headaches in Mexico City and San Miguel – although a bit higher in elevation), but some do.

You may feel super thirsty, have a nagging headache, and unreasonable fatigue. That, my friends, is altitude sickness. Drink a lot of water (this helps your body adjust to the higher altitude) and don’t plan anything strenuous for the first day.

And with that being said, if you’re taking any day trips to even higher elevations (say Pikes Peak or Rocky Mountain National Park), let your body adjust to the elevation in Denver for at least a day or so first.

Suggested Denver in One Day Itinerary:

This Denver in one day itinerary assumes you’ve arrived the night before. If your flight arrives super early and you can get downtown by 10am or so, I’d say that’ll work, too!

As mentioned earlier, this Denver itinerary is totally walkable. You can opt to take an Uber if you’d like, especially to/from the RiNo neighborhood, as it’s a tad further away from the rest on this list.

And because food is such a major part of experiencing Denver, I’m adding a huge section at the end so you can choose how to fill your stomach throughout the day. Just promise me one thing – you won’t miss out on a salted caramel peanut butter cup cone from Little Man Ice Cream. By far the best ice cream I’ve ever had ( and I’ve had my fair share ).

With just one day in Denver, understand you won’t be able to do every single thing in the city. But — I promise you can get a really great sense of the area. I’m including a few additional things to do at the end if you’ve got a day and a half or even 2 days in Denver.

Morning/Early Afternoon: Downtown Denver

1. Colorado State Capitol

Denver is the capital of Colorado, so you can’t miss a quick visit! Start off your one day in Denver at the Colorado State Capitol building . Look up in awe at it’s beautiful golden dome (made of REAL gold gifted by local gold miners) and admire the super rare rose onyx construction. It’s a prominent feature of the Denver skyline, AND reminiscent of the US Capitol afterall.

One Day in Denver: How to (Easily) Plan A Super Fun Denver Itinerary

You can normally do free tours of the inside of the building, but it was closed to visitors when we were there. Inside, you’ll find a stunning combination of marble, oak, brass, murals, and stained glass windows.

Make sure to climb the steps to see “One Mile Above Sea Level” engraved on the 15th step (although it was later learned that the 13th step is actually one mile above sea level). Whoops!

2. 16th Street Mall

The 16th Street Mall is a 12-block shopping and dining (mostly) pedestrian street which actually reminded me a bit of Las Ramblas in Barcelona ! It’s on the way to our next stops, so if you’re hungry, this is a great area to find some breakfast (Corner Bakery, The Delectable Egg, and Ink! Coffee are all great options on this mile-long block).

There’s tons of shopping as well, but I personally wouldn’t spend much of your one day in Denver doing so. Check out the D&F Tower, a two-thirds replica of the Campanile of St. Marks in Venice !

You’ll come back here later for Larimer Square, so just go for a short stroll and get moving!

3. Tattered Cover Bookstore LoDo

If you’re a book lover, you’ve just gotta check out Tattered Cover. Don’t let that old brick building in downtown Denver confuse you— go on in!

visit to denver

Not only is it pretty iconic to the city, but there’s an overwhelming selection of books to peruse through! And it’s got that old-school bookstore atmosphere (and smell!) which I absolutely adore!

I especially love (and appreciate!) how the staff writes out mini synopsi of their recommended books → makes deciding my next read super easy!

Spend 20 minutes or so hanging out, browsing around, and finding your next favorite author!

4. Union Station

Union Station is a beautifully restored, beaux arts-style transport hub completed way back when in 1914 (it’s since been renovated).

Yes, it’s technically Denver’s main transport hub (with access to the city’s light rail, Amtrak, regional buses, and the free 16th Street Mall shuttle), but it’s so much more than that!

One Day in Denver: How to (Easily) Plan A Super Fun Denver Itinerary

Go on in, sit in the beautifully decorated Grand Hall, and order a drink from the Terminal Bar.

Union Station is sometimes even referred to as Denver’s “living room”, with its plush sitting areas and posh bar area. Looks more like the lobby of a swanky hotel than a train station! Trust me!

If you took the Light Rail from the airport, this is where you got off! It’s located right in LoDo (Lower Downtown), so you’ll definitely pass by it on your way to our next stop. Or if you aren’t lugging around some luggage when you arrive, you can simply check it out then! But whatever you do, don’t miss it!

→ Psst: If you decided to skip Tattered Cover LoDo, there’s a mini Tattered Cover Bookstore here!

5. Confluence Park

Once you’re done oohing and aahing at the architecture of Union Station, head on over to Confluence Park! But first, grab a boozy donut from the Habit Doughnut Dispensary! They’re infused with liquor from tiny airplane bottles, so perfect for any whisky lovers.

One Day in Denver: How to (Easily) Plan A Super Fun Denver Itinerary

Cross the numerous pedestrian bridges, and you’ve now arrived at Confluence Park!

Here you’ll find some of the best urban green space in the city. There’s tons of cute pups playing and running around, locals soaking up the sunshine on the grass, relaxing with a good book in hand, etc. The park is usually pretty quiet, so it’s a great respite from the busy city.

People even swim here in the summer (although I don’t recommend it since I’ve read high levels of E. Coli have been found in the water — eek.) Swim at your own risk, and don’t let your furry friends drink it!

6. Little Man Ice Cream

Okay, now we’re talking and the REAL reason I had you cross all those little bridges (wink, wink). It’s ice cream time!

One Day in Denver: How to (Easily) Plan A Super Fun Denver Itinerary

And trust me when I say there’s a reason why the line’s usually down the sidewalk. You can’t miss the milk-jug shaped shop featuring it’s creative and unique homemade ice cream flavors. It’s easily a Denver staple; I’m sorry, have you even been to Denver if you haven’t had a few scoops of Little Man?

What to order? My favorites were the salted caramel peanut butter cup (why hasn’t anyone else thought of that) and the dirt ‘n worms ( totally took me back to my childhood).

One Day in Denver: How to (Easily) Plan A Super Fun Denver Itinerary

They’ve also got a few vegan flavors on the menu so everyone can enjoy! I’ve heard the Vegan chocolate salted oreo is absolutely bomb, as is the salted nutella and banana pudding.

You can feel good eating your ice cream knowing that Little Man is donating scoops of rice and beans to developing countries around the world! I can totally support an ice cream shop doing good for the world.

Psst: it’s actually open until midnight (true story), so you can come back later for more salted nutella if your little heart desires.

Late Afternoon: RiNo Arts District

Ohhh, RiNo (short for the River North Art District), was one of my favorite areas during our day in Denver! Not only is it super trendy with a bunch of colorful food markets and interesting sidewalk art pieces, but there’s contemporary art galleries and hip cocktail lounges (!!!) and brewpubs with tons of craft beverages. My kinda place!

visit to denver

One walk around and you’ll definitely feel the urban charm and it’s industrial renewal (I mean, there are restaurants tucked in shipping containers afterall!).

I’ve heard it’s pretty popular at night, but trust me → you’ll wanna get here before dark in order to walk around and see all the vibrant murals! 110% instagrammable, if you ask me.

visit to denver

Don’t miss fancy drinks at Death & Co (within the Ramble Hotel), eclectic shopping at The Source, craft beer at colorful Our Mutual Friend Brewing, a tasting flight at Stem Ciders, some sweets at Denver Central Market (a gourmet food hall in a reclaimed warehouse), and some intriguing contemporary art at fooLPRoof.

Other runner ups include cocktails at The Block Distilling Company, wood-fired pizza at Cart-Driver, live music at Larimer Lounge, and adventurous Mexican at Los Chingones.

visit to denver

Honestly, the options are endless. We could have spent all day here!

And of course, get your fair share of walking around scoping out the colorful graffiti in between the booze! Tons of photo opportunities await!

Night: Larimer Square

Once it gets dark, make your way to Larimer Square, for dinner and drinks (if your poor stomach can handle more booze). We loved the ambiance of the small square, with the signature canopy of lights above and all the historic buildings. It ain’t considered Denver’s oldest and most historic block for nothing!

visit to denver

No matter the time of year, there’s always something going on. The square was decked out in fall decorations (pumpkins and goards galore), free apple ciders were being passed out, and we (ok, I )  loved every second of it.

And if you want even more options, there’s tons to pick from on the next street over –  the 16th Street Mall!

If you visited earlier in the day, you’ll know there’s ample restaurants to choose from. You’ll also see horse-drawn carriages and pedi-cabs carrying people up and down the mall after dark, as well as more twinkle lights in the trees than you could ever imagine!

Where to Eat and Drink in Denver:

There’s honestly too much good food to devour during your one day in Denver. You might just have to spend an extra day here in order to get it all in.

visit to denver

MY TOP PICKS INCLUDE:

  • pizza and cocktails at Cart-Driver (in an old shipping container!)
  • fried chicken and waffles at Tupelo Honey (try the mint juleps and po’ boys as well!)
  • biscuit breakfast sandwiches at Denver Biscuit Company
  • Anything and everything at Little Man’s Ice Cream , but especially the salted peanut butter cup if it’s on the menu that day
  • Tacos and tequila/mezcal cocktails at you guessed it, Tacos and Tequila
  • A kitschy diner experience at Sam’s No. 3 (featured on Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives!)
  • Upside down pineapple pancakes at Snooze AM Eatery (super retro!)

And if you wanna squeeze in one more good meal, head on over to Root Down (there’s actually a location at the airport if you missed it in the city).

Other things to do in Denver:

  • International Church of Cannabis: I had originally wanted to visit this psycho-delic looking church, but opted to skip it once learning it’s a cool $25 a person to go inside. I’ve heard the light show is worth it, though! Go and tell me how it is! Do note it’s kinda outta the way (not walkable from downtown Denver), and difficult to include on your Denver itinerary if you aren’t cruisin’ around town in a car.

One Day in Denver: How to (Easily) Plan A Super Fun Denver Itinerary

  • City Park: We visited City Park hoping to see the fall colors, but we were actually too early in the season, and only a few trees had begun to turn! Nevertheless, we found it to be a great place for a long stroll, with tons of leafy trees and a sprawling lake in the middle of the park. And this is where you’ll find the Denver Zoo, Denver Museum of Science, and actually a golf course!

Day Trips from Denver

If you have more than just one day in Denver, I highly recommend making a day trip (or two – depending on how long you’ve got)! Sure, you could spend all your time in Denver itself, but you can actually tick off most of the touristy things in one day, so might as well go exploring elsewhere!

I’ve got an entire post detailing all my recommended day trips from Denver , but here’s three of my favorites:

  • Red Rocks Park and Amphitheater

By far the closest day trip from Denver, and you really only need an hour or two to check it out! We left the city around 9am, got to Red Rocks by 9:30, and was back in Denver around 11am or so!

Red Rocks opens an hour before sunrise and closes an hour after sunset, so you’ve got lots of time to squeeze it into your Denver itinerary.

One Day in Denver: How to (Easily) Plan A Super Fun Denver Itinerary

Although you won’t be witnessing one of their shows, just standing within the rock walls is worth the short trek from Denver.

With that being said, I wanna see a concert here SO badly – I can’t even imagine how epic it’d be! I mean, the giant sandstone walls of the theatre are higher than Niagara Falls – whoa!

2. Rocky Mountain National Park

You’re oh so close to the park, so if you’ve got an extra day in Denver, don’t miss Rocky Mountain National Park! With just one day, make sure to drive along Trail Ridge Road, stopping at the Alpine Visitor Center and Alpine Ridge Trail (my favorite spot in the park!) and make the short hike around Bear Lake.

If you’re visiting in the fall months, you may be lucky enough to see hundreds of elk grazing around – they’re definitely a sight to see!

Tip: Be prepared for any and all kinds of weather. On our most recent visit (in mid-October), there was an unexpected snowstorm, and the main road through the park was closed. Keep a heavy-ish jacket in the car if you’re visiting from October – April/May as the weather changes quite frequently, especially as elevation changes.

Spend some time in Estes Park, the little mountain town directly East of the park (and always stock up on homemade fudge and taffy here!)

3. Colorado Springs

Located just about an hour and 15 minutes south of Denver, I highly encourage you to plan a full day exploring Colorado Springs. A few of my favorite activities:

visit to denver

  • Drive up Pikes Peak (wear warm clothing as it gets super chilly at the 14,115 foot summit) and get a special Pikes Peak donut (apparently they need to use a special recipe because of the high elevation).
  • Wander throughout Garden of the Gods (located at the base of Pikes Peak), and admire the 1,300 acres of sandstone formations. Don’t miss the balancing rock, kissing camels, and the peaks of the Rockies! One of my favorite places in all of Colorado!
  • Walk through history at The Manitou Cliff Dwellings, a group of relocated Ancestral Puebloan cliff dwellings overlooking the resort town of Manitou Springs. I didn’t have time to go, so I’ll be saving this for my next visit!

And whatever you do, end the day stuffing your face with extra moist brisket, ribs, sausage, creamed corn, baked beans, and banana pudding at Rudy’s BBQ for dinner. The first time I ate here was actually in Austin, Texas , so you know it’s legit!

Hope this helps you plan out your one day in Denver! Told ya it was easy! What’ll you be including on your Denver itinerary?!

2 Days in Denver: The Perfect Itinerary From a Local! (2023 Guide)

Planning a short trip to the Mile-High City? We have the perfect 2 days in Denver itinerary (written by a local) including the best things to do, where to eat, drink and stay and other insider tips for a great visit.

The capital of Colorado, Denver is nestled in the foothills of the beautiful Rocky Mountains. The people here are friendly, and they value the outdoors, a good craft beer, and social gatherings with friends.

As an outsider, you’ve likely heard of Denver’s 300+ days of annual sunshine. Or, more commonly, that Denver is “the Mile High City” because our elevation is exactly 5,280 feet above sea level.

But to those unfamiliar with this small city, a wealth of amazing food, places to stay and things to do awaits. You could easily spend a week here and not see it all. But if all you have is a two-day weekend, that’s plenty of time to hit the key points in Denver and really get a feel for the city.

2 Days in Denver, Colorado – Itinerary for First Time Visitors

Day one in denver, co, breakfast / union station.

Denver itinerary Union Station

What once was old has now been restored! Union Station underwent a complete overhaul in 2012, and is now a popular hangout spot in the city. It’s conveniently located near the beginning of the 16th Street Mall (on the north end), so this is the perfect place to start your first day.

You’ll find plenty of dining options within Union Station. Snooze , in particular, is a favorite around the city for breakfast. However, if you don’t mind walking a small bit (2-3 minutes) from Union Station, I can’t recommend Tupelo Honey enough!

16th Street Mall

16th Street Mall Denver travel blog

The 16th Street Mall is a one-mile long pedestrian promenade filled with shops, restaurants, and various attractions smack dab in the middle of downtown Denver.

The best way to explore the 16th Street Mall is to walk . That way you can pop in and out of various businesses along the way. You can also stop and watch the street performers, and are sure to encounter some of the best people watching around.

However, if you can’t (or don’t want to) walk, you also have the option of utilizing the free mall ride shuttle . These buses continuously run along the 16th Street Mall (which is closed to any other vehicles) in both directions to get you to your next destination even faster.

Lunch at Sam’s No. 3

If you really want to get a feel for Denver’s beloved restaurant scene, a stop at Sam’s No. 3 is a must. This diner is absolutely adored by Denverites and visitors alike. In fact, if you’re a fan of “Diners, Drive-ins and Dives” you may recognize this spot.

Like many diners, the menu is quite extensive. However, unlike many diners…all of it at Sam’s is fabulously delicious. You really can’t go wrong with anything you order; however, Sam’s is particularly known for their kickin’ green chili and massive breakfast burritos (served all day, of course).

Capitol Building

One of downtown Denver’s most iconic buildings, the Capitol Building is certainly worth a quick pit stop during your visit. Modeled after the U.S. Capitol Building, the most distinctive feature is the gold-plated dome. And yes, it’s made from real gold!

The building offers a free tour, if that’s something you’re into. But make sure you stop and get a picture on the 13th step leading up to the entrance. This point is exactly one mile above sea level, and given Denver is known as the “Mile High City,” this commemorative photo is perfect to remember your trip by.

Denver Art Museum

If art is your thing, then the Denver Art Museum is where you need to be. With over 70,000 pieces of art in their collection, you could spend multiple days exploring here alone.

In addition to permanent pieces, the DAM also hosts a variety of shorter term exhibitions. Covering everything from historical art pieces, to digital art installations, to performance art, you’re sure to find something intriguing!

If you are planning to visit a few museums, consider purchasing a CityPass to save up to 42% off admission.

Voodoo Doughnuts

Unless you live under a rock, you’ve likely heard about these amazingly tasty morsels of doughy goodness. Denver was the first Voodoo Doughnuts location opened outside of Oregon, and people have been lining up ever since.

Swing by for an afternoon sugar rush to keep your energy up. There’s no shortage of amazing flavors to try, but the maple bacon long john is where it’s at (in my opinion).

Larimer Square / Dinner

Larimer Square is probably Denver’s most historic and significant block. This is the city’s oldest commercial block, and served as the city’s business hub for many years. After a much-needed renovation in the 1960s, it is once again a bustling hub for the city.

Here there are many bars, restaurants and shops to explore. A popular choice (and personal favorite) for dinner is Osteria Marco , a casual but delicious Italian restaurant.

Catch a Performance

Denver center for performing arts

Denver is a mecca for all things performing arts! In fact, the Denver Performing Arts Complex is the largest performing arts center (under one roof) in the entire country.

But if Broadway musicals and plays don’t tickle your fancy, Denver still has something for you!

Catch stand-up comedy at the city’s most beloved comedy club, Comedy Works . Or dance the night away during a concert at one of our (many) amazing music venues.

Day Two in Denver, CO

The Lobby in Denver

Start your second day off in Denver’s Ballpark neighborhood! First stop being The Lobby , where you can grab an amazing breakfast (or brunch) to kick start your day.

Not only do they have incredibly inventive and delicious food, but their drinks are on point as well! And while not necessarily conducive to a day of sightseeing, you can imbibe on bottomless mimosas at The Lobby every day of the week. So an important decision will need to be made here, and I won’t judge either way.

Explore RiNo

If you emerge from The Lobby without a belly full of mimosas, the next stop on the agenda is exploring Denver’s River North Art District (aka RiNo) neighborhood. This is one of Denver’s most eclectic and trendy neighborhoods, so there are tons of options to see and do here.

You will have a front row seat to Denver’s street art scene when walking the streets of RiNo. You can sign up for a guided street art tour of RiNo here . And if you’re a beer lover, there’s no shortage of amazing craft breweries in this neighborhood. Including Blue Moon , Ratio Beerworks , Epic Brewing , and so many more.

You can also try your hand at axe throwing at DAGAR which is one part art gallery, one part axe room. Or you can come back here at night to catch a show at the Mission Ballroom . Really, the possibilities are endless.

Denver Central Market / Lunch

The last few years in Denver have seen an explosion of food halls and gourmet markets, and we certainly aren’t mad about it. And in the RiNo neighborhood, that means a stop at Denver Central Market .

Bustling at any time of day, this market has a variety of shops and food stalls to check out. You can grab a drink at the Curio Bar , savor some legit Italian prosciutto at Vero , or indulge in a sweet treat at Temper Chocolates and Confections .

There are plenty of options, but narrowing them down and making a choice will not be easy.

Catch a Game

Coors Field Denver

Denver is a very sports-centric city. In fact, we have a professional sports team covering pretty much every major sports franchise! That means no matter when you visit, you have a good chance of being able to catch a home game in the Mile High City.

Football: Denver Broncos at Empower Field at Mile High Basketball: Denver Nuggets at the Pepsi Center Baseball: Colorado Rockies at Coors Field Hockey: Colorado Avalanche at the Pepsi Center Soccer: Colorado Rapids at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park Lacrosse: Colorado Mammoth at the Pepsi Center

Drinks with a View

One of the best views you can get from Denver is of the Rocky Mountains to the west. And the best way to catch that view is from one of the many rooftop bars in Denver .

It’s honestly hard to find a bad rooftop here. But if you’re looking for drinks with some of the most killer views, then I really suggest checking out the Viewhouse (Ballpark neighborhood), 54 Thirty in the Le Meridien (Downtown), or Avanti Food & Beverage (Highlands neighborhood).

Where to Stay in Denver

For first-time visitors, it’s generally a good idea to stay as close to downtown Denver as possible. You’ll be closer to the action, and will save on overall transportation costs. A couple of hotel suggestions are below, but Denver has no shortage of great hotel options to consider.

Brown Palace

The Brown Palace is Denver’s most-famous (and definitely more expensive) historic hotel. But if your budget allows, it’s worth a splurge to live in the lap of luxury for a couple nights.

Le Meridien

A more reasonable option cost-wise, the Le Meridien is relatively new and very centrally located. Plus they have the city’s tallest open-air rooftop bar on the 54th floor! As you can imagine, the views of the city from up there (season permitting) are amazing.

Denver Travel Tips

Denver is a well-connected city that is generally easy to navigate. However, the larger metropolitan area is pretty geographically spread out.

If your interests while visiting are contained within the downtown area, you can easily get by without renting a car. However, if you wish to explore the greater metropolitan area, having a car would make that a bit easier for you.

Flying in to Denver is a breeze. Denver International Airport (DIA) is located approximately 30 minutes outside the city, but is easily connected to downtown via train, which runs from DIA to downtown approximately every 30 minutes.

The Light Rail is Denver’s main public transportation system connecting downtown Denver to surrounding areas. The fee structure is based on travel zones, so the further you go, the more expensive it is.

Ride Share / Taxis

Like any major metropolitan area in the US, Denver has a large network of cabs and ride share companies to choose from. Typically speaking this is the most effective way to get around the city.

If your time is short there are several half and full day tours that can provide you with an overview of Denver, including walking tours , bike tours , segway tours  and motor scooter tours .

Kara’s Bio: Kara is the founder, writer and editor behind Happening in Denver , a travel blog. After fleeing small-town life in Wyoming, Kara has called Denver, CO home for the last 12 years. In her free time, she’s dreaming up her next trip, petting any dog that will let her, and laughing (loudly) at any opportunity. You can follow her on Facebook , Twitter and Instagram .

Denver Art Museum’s Deputy Director and Chief Strategy Officer Andrea Kalivas Fulton to depart following 23 years of leadership

Headshot of Andrea Fulton

DENVER – May 10, 2024 – The Denver Art Museum (DAM) today announced that Andrea Kalivas Fulton, Deputy Director and Chief Strategy Officer, will leave the museum in June 2024.

Since joining the museum in 2001, Fulton has been instrumental in imagining, leading and communicating the DAM’s overall strategy for growth and expansion.

As the museum’s Frederic C. Hamilton Building opened in 2006, Fulton fronted the DAM’s media and communications team as Communications Director, leading the organization’s outreach to press and community partners to celebrate the museum’s growth.

In 2011, Fulton became Deputy Director and Chief Marketing Officer and spearheaded the museum’s membership and marketing teams. In that role, she was part of the team that crafted Vision 2021 and lead the charge to renovate the now Lanny & Sharon Martin Building, formerly known as the North Building, a defining milestone for the DAM and for Fulton’s career.

She pivoted to Chief Strategy Officer the same year, playing key roles in managing the museum through the covid-19 pandemic, as well as creating and implementing the museum’s racial equity roadmap. Most recently, Fulton has led the museum’s 2025 strategic masterplan and designed the merger that brought the Kirkland and Denver Art museums together in 2024.

“A common thread in every chapter of Andrea’s brilliant career has been of building and connecting,” said Christoph Heinrich, Frederick and Jan Mayer Director of the DAM. “Not just of actual structures, but of plans, teams, connections, partnerships and ideas. Andrea has been in the heart and soul of our museum for more than two decades and she has been critical to its evolution, ensuring that it will serve Denver for many more years to come. Andrea will always be a part of the DAM and we will continue to rely on her support and feedback in the future.”

“The Denver Art Museum is a special and unique asset in our community and I’m incredibly fortunate to have been part of it during this time of rapid evolution,” said Fulton. “I am excited to stay engaged as a supporter of DAM and as part of the cultural community while I decide what my next chapter might be.”

Reader: I've Been Waiting a Year to Get Into Casa Bonita

Tony Hawk and son at Casa Bonita.

Well, I'm glad another celebrity who doesn't live here got right in! I got an invite but any time I could go was already immediately booked up.
It'll be a year in June for me waiting. Some friends have even gone multiple times. Oh, well.
Same. Why achieve local fame the way i have if I can’t eat at mediocre restaurants?!?!
His son was [on the list], he lives in Boulder and chose a date near his CU graduation.
I would have cut my own Grandma from my wedding invite list if Tony Hawk showed up. You guys act like places like Casa Bonita doesn’t want the press and notoriety of celebs going to their establishments. Welcome to being wealthy and powerful. It opens all sorts of doors for you.
That would be a dope course on Tony Hawk's Pro Skater. With the pool empty, of course.

3-Day Denver Itinerary

Denver is a vibrant, active city with 300 days of sunshine and brilliant blue skies and breathtaking. It's located at the base of the majestic Rocky Mountains, 5,280 feet (1,609 meters) above sea level — exactly one mile high. Get ready to shop, take in the sights and see the best of Denver with our three-day itinerary. While it's a walkable city, also check out our guide to  getting around without a car .

Day One: Performing Arts, Visual Arts, History and More

16th street mall .

Built in 1982, the  16th Street Mall  is a mile-long pedestrian promenade that runs through the center of downtown and is lined with outdoor cafes and retail shops. Free shuttle buses cruise the mile-long mall about 90 seconds apart and stop at every intersection so it's easy to cover a lot of ground in a short period of time.

"I See What You Mean," or better known as " The Big Blue Bear ," on 14th and California streets, was created by the late Denver-based artist Lawrence Argent. This delightful 40-foot-tall sculpture peers curiously into the building, injecting a sense of fun and playfulness into the  Colorado Convention Center . Take a photo or two of this only-in-Denver icon — he looks good from all angles.

Shopping at the Denver Pavilions

An outdoor entertainment and shopping destination, this center is located on the 16th Street pedestrian mall between Welton and Tremont streets in the heart of downtown. The  Denver Pavilions  complex features 40 shops, restaurants and entertainment venues, including a movie theater and bowling alley. This two-city-block, three-story-high, open-air mall also offers convenient underground parking.

Denver Performing Arts Complex

The  Denver Performing Arts Complex  is the cultural hub of The Mile High City, encompassing opera, theater, stage, dance and music. A variety of cultural enrichment awaits you — symphony and orchestral arrangements, jazz and musicals, performances by dance companies, theatrical extravaganzas, one-person shows, plays, stand-up comics, and more. Plan ahead and purchase your tickets before the day of the show.

Brown Palace Hotel & Spa by Marriott

A Forbes Four Star, AAA Four Diamond luxury landmark located in the heart of downtown Denver. The  Brown Palace Hotel & Spa  is a charter member of National Trust Historic Hotels of America. The hotel opened its doors on August 12, 1892, and hasn't closed them for a single moment since. The Brown Palace remains one of the city's crown jewels today, with its stunning stained glass atrium lobby, extravagant suites and extraordinary dining venues. The hotel's original artesian spring well is located 720 feet beneath the lobby floor and still provides water to every faucet in the hotel. Historical tours are available.

Denver Union Station

Denver Union Station

Lower Downtown

Denver union station .

Denver Union Station  has undergone a massive restoration and re-development that has made it an exciting place in the heart of downtown. The 1914 Beaux-Arts station is now a hub for transportation, dining, shopping and entertainment with 112 hotel rooms at The Crawford Hotel , four new Colorado chef-owned restaurants, two quick-service restaurants, local one-of-a-kind shops and a Colorado beer hall. Direct rail service connects  Denver International Airport   and this historic landmark.

Rockmount Ranch Wear

A true Western icon,  Rockmount Ranch Wear  introduced the first Western shirts with snaps and helped popularize it as legitimate American fashion throughout the United States and abroad. The Rockmount building is a historic landmark built in 1909.

Museum of Contemporary Art Denver (MCA)

The  Museum of Contemporary Art Denver  is an innovative forum for contemporary art that inspires and challenges all audiences, creating understanding and dialog about art of our time. As Denver's first institution devoted entirely to contemporary art, MCA Denver is housed in an environmentally sustainable facility designed by David Adjaye.

Larimer Square

Denver's urban shopping and dining district is also the city's oldest and most historic block. Complete with glittering lights strung over the entire block,  Larimer Square  is charming and elegant with a nightlife that defines hip urban renewal. Victorian buildings house specialty boutiques and unique chef-driven restaurants. Shop one-of-a-kind stores with distinctive fashion and exclusive offerings, and enjoy special events and a vibrant atmosphere year-round. Located on Larimer Street between 14th and 15th streets.

Denver Art Museum

Denver Art Museum

Golden Triangle Creative District

Denver art museum .

See the famous collection of Native American art and explore the bold art inside and out of the Frederic C. Hamilton building, designed by world-famous architect Daniel Libeskind. Denver Art Museum recently celebrated the reopening of the Martin Building (formerly known as the North Building). First opened in 1971, the building was designed by Italian architect Gio Ponti and Denver-based James Sudler Associates. The building has been fully renovated with expanded gallery space, plus stunning views of the city skyline and Rocky Mountains. The museum is free for children under 18. There are also select free days, generally one per month, for all ages. The museum is open every day.

Clyfford Still Museum

This museum showcases the work of Clyfford Still, considered one of the most important painters of the 20th century and among the first generation of abstract expressionist artists. The Clyfford Still Museum  was founded to promote the late artist's work and legacy. Still's estate — 2,400 artworks — had been sealed off from the public since 1980.

History Colorado Center

Denver's  History Colorado Center  includes exhibits and programs that tell the stories of Colorado and engage visitors in the past, present and future of our state. Enjoy interactive exhibits like a virtual ride in a real Model T; testing your skills on a ski jump simulator and setting off dynamite in an 1880s hard-rock mine.

Kirkland Museum of Fine & Decorative Art

The museum houses three major collections: paintings by namesake artist Vance Kirkland, fine and decorative art by other Colorado and regional artists, and international decorative art.

Colorado State Capitol

Modeled after the U.S. Capitol, the magnificent  Colorado State Capitol  is topped by a dome containing more than 200 ounces of real gold. The 13th step on the west side is exactly one mile (5,280 feet) above sea level. The Colorado State Capitol building is open to the public Monday through Friday.

Downtown

Mcgregor square  and  denver milk market.

Right next door to Coors Field is McGregor Square , the city's newest urban playground. You'll find the  Milepost Zero  food hall surrounding a 17,000-square-foot plaza that hosts year-round events like concerts, festivals and movie nights. The plaza has a stadium-sized LED screen. Catch a game at  Tom’s Watch Bar,  get a bite to eat at  Carmine's  or browse the books at  Tattered Cover Book Store. Or head to Dairy Block , a walkable micro-district in LoDo that contains Denver Milk Market , a diverse mix of culinary concepts, and the Alley, a laid-back place to have a drink.

Rocky Mountain National Park

Rocky Mountain National Park

Day Three: Take a Day Trip to the Rocky Mountains or Nearby Town

Option 1: rocky mountain national park.

Located 71 miles (114 km) northwest of Denver,  Rocky Mountain National Park  features 400 square miles (1,036 sq km) of scenic beauty, including Trail Ridge Road, the highest continuous highway in the world, which crosses the Continental Divide at higher than two miles above sea level. The park has two information centers, hundreds of miles of hiking trails, tranquil lakes, waterfalls, wildlife and horseback riding. Estes Park is a resort town on the edge of the park with restaurants and shops.

Option 2: Golden

Located at the base of the foothills,  Golden  was the territorial capital until 1867 and remains one of the most historic towns in the state. An arch spanning the street proudly proclaims that Golden is "Where the West Lives!" Spend the day exploring Golden's fantastic museums such as the  Colorado Railroad Museum ,  Golden History Museum ,  Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum  or the  American  Mountaineering Museum . The legendary  Coors Brewery  can brew up to 22 million barrels and package up to 16 million barrels annually, making it the biggest single-site brewer in the world. For a fee, take a guided tour (requires a reservation) highlighting the malting, brewing and packaging processes and ending with a sampling of Coors products or opt for a sampling-only experience. You can also visit the gift shop.

Option 3: Colorado Springs

Pikes Peak Country is located 60 miles (97 km) south of Denver and features more than 40 attractions centered around 14,000-foot (4,267 m) Pikes Peak and the city of  Colorado Springs . Things to see include the Air Force Academy, one of three United States military colleges; the famous Broadmoor Resort with its lake and three golf courses; the nearby Seven Falls, a magnificent series of waterfalls; the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame with its exhibits on this exciting professional sport; and Garden of the Gods , which has gigantic, 500-foot-high (152 m) red sandstone rock monuments at the base of Pikes Peak; and speaking of the mountain, you can hike, drive or take a truly unique trip to the summit via the  Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway . For an adventurous guided experience, check out Adventures Out West , which offers Jeep tours, zip-line fun, hot-air balloon rides and tours of Garden of the Gods on Segway vehicles.

Option 4: Idaho Springs, Mount Blue Sky  and Georgetown

Idaho Springs , only about 30 miles (48 km) from Denver, packs in a full day of adventures. Take a trip back into Colorado's gold mining history at the  Argo Mill and Tunnel . During the warmer months,  Clear Creek Rafting Co.   and  Raft Masters  offer rafting along beautiful Clear Creek. Or zoom above Clear Creek on a canopy zip-line tour with  Colorado Adventure Center . You'll reach heights of up to 65 feet and get stunning views of the canyon as you fly along nearly a mile of zip line. But what if you want to experience it all in one place?  Lawson Adventure Park & Resort  offers a do-it-all package where you can zip line, traverse granite cliffs (thanks to Colorado's only private via ferrata), roll down the mountain inside a giant ball and finish your adventures by rafting on Clear Creek. You can also spend a night in either cabins or yurts and do it again the following day or try disc golf, ATV tours, fly-fishing and more.

Mount Blue Sky  has the highest paved auto road in North America, snaking its way to the 14,260-foot (4,346 m) summit. Please note:  online reservations  are now required for timed slots . The road is open only from the Friday before Memorial Day through the first Monday in October and frequently has snow on it, even in August. (The road closes at Summit Lake after Labor Day, preventing you from reaching the top). The summit is 60 miles (97 km) from downtown Denver and the view from the top takes in the entire Front Range. On your way up the mountain, be sure to stop at M. Walter Pesman Trail (maintained by Denver Botanic Gardens) for a wildflower hike; you won't see anything like the rare flowers and 1,500-year-old bristlecone pine trees anywhere else in the world. The trail winds through subalpine and alpine areas where wildflowers and animals of the fragile tundra live.

Located just 42 miles (68 km) west of Denver,  Georgetown  is a delightful Victorian village set in a spectacular mountain valley with 200 restored buildings from the 1870s. The main street has shops and restaurants and many of the old homes have been turned into antique stores. The Georgetown Loop Mining & Railroad Park operates during the summer months with narrow gauge steam locomotives curling down a mountain ledge, at one point crossing over a 90-foot-high (27 m) trestle with an optional tour of a silver mine.

Option 5: Fort Collins

Situated at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains,  Fort Collins  offers fabulous recreational opportunities, diverse cultural attractions, a vibrant nightlife scene and plenty of family-friendly activities. Just 65 miles north of Denver (about an hour's drive) on I-25, the town is home to Colorado State University. Explore the city's 50 parks, trek over 280 miles of trails (including paved and unpaved walking and bike trails) or go for a whitewater adventure on the Cache la Poudre, a river runner's paradise, from May through September. Downtown Fort Collins features a wide array of cuisine and nightlife options, not to mention some great shopping. College sports | football recruiting: trio of recent commits kickstarts cu buffs’ class of 2025.

Buford (Ga.) High School linebacker Mantrez Walker, a three-star prospect in the 2025 class, has committed to Colorado. (Courtesy of Mantrez Walker)

After one visit to the Colorado campus, Mantrez Walker wanted to take another.

During the second visit, he made the decision to play for the Buffaloes.

Walker committed to CU during its annual Black & Gold day on April 27, one of three recruits who have jumped-started the Buffaloes’ class of 2025.

“I’ve been up there twice and really just the environment, it seems so chill up there and elegant,” Walker, a linebacker from Buford (Ga.) High School, said an interview with BuffZone. “Everyone seemed happy and it’s a lot of people just striving to be great. The people really seem to care about not only me but my family, as well, and that’s very important to me.”

Head coach Deion Sanders and his staff are still putting together the 2024 roster – there are seven open scholarships as of Thursday afternoon – but the recruiting for 2025 is underway and took a big step during the week of the spring game.

On April 26, four-star cornerback Alex Graham from IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., gave his verbal commitment. The next day, so did Walker and tight end Corbin Laisure, from Bluff City, Tenn. Walker and Laisure are both three-star prospects.

While CU did have three other 2025 commits a year ago, all of which decommitted in November, the current trio on board is less than eight months away from signing day in December.

Coach Prime and the Buffs have relied heavily on the transfer portal to build their roster, but the high school recruits lay a foundation for the future and the trio of current commits has bought in.

“When I actually talked to the coaches and went there and checked it out, I was like, ‘Oh yeah, I like this place; I like it a lot,’” Graham said in an interview with Rivals.com . “I brought my family there and they love it too.”

Graham, listed at 6-foot-1, 186 pounds, is from Michigan and picked CU over the defending national champion Michigan Wolverines. He has 30 scholarship offers.

Laisure, a 6-foot-5, 215-pound tight end, caught 64 passes for 774 yards and 10 touchdowns as a junior last fall at Sullivan East (Tenn.) High School, but will transfer to Science Hill High School this fall. He, too, bought into the message from the CU coaches.

“Sitting down with their coaching staff, they don’t tell you what they’re going to give you, they tell you what you can earn and the opportunity you do have,” Laisure told WCYB-TV . “I think the opportunity to go and earn a spot, to go and earn my keep there is really high.”

Walker loves the opportunity, as well. He’s the latest in a long line of elite recruits from Buford, a 6A powerhouse in Georgia. (Current CU kicker Alejandro Mata also went to Buford).

“I just felt that the time was right,” he said. “I’m very excited to have an opportunity like this. It is an honor.”

The 6-foot-1, 225-pound Walker had 54 tackles and four tackles for loss as a junior last season and believes playing for a powerhouse prep team will help him in college.

“I think that will help me translate easily,” he said. “I’ve been being coached hard all my life so I definitely will be able to adapt to the college environment and continue to ball out.”

Walker’s offer list includes Michigan, Florida, Florida State, LSU, Miami, Stanford and more, but CU stood out.

“I like Colorado’s mindset of winning right now and not being afraid to play guys who can help them towards that,” he said. “Also I like all of the NFL experience on staff and Deion’s realness with all of his players.”

National Nurses Week 2024: A RN reflects on the state of the profession, calls for change

When is National Nurses Week?

National Nurses Week is observed annually May 6 through May 12.

What is National Nurses Week?

National Nurses Week grew out of a congressional resolution and proclamation signed by President Reagan in 1982 deeming May 6 as a National Recognition Day for Nurses.

The American Nurses Association board of directors expanded this to a National Nurses Week in 1990. The permanent dates for the week were designated in 1993 to be officially observed starting in 1994.

The week includes National School Nurses Day on May 8 and May 12, the birthday of Florence Nightingale, which has been celebrated as International Nurse Day since 1974.

Denver Nuggets star Jamal Murray throws heat pack on court during game, slammed as 'inexcusable and dangerous'

Jamal Murray of the Denver Nuggets warms up.

Denver Nuggets point guard Jamal Murray threw a heat pack onto the court during his team's playoff loss Monday night, opening himself up to potential discipline for the unsportsmanlike act.

Murray was seated at the far end of Denver's bench when he hurled the object onto the court with about 4:40 left in the second quarter as Timberwolves big man and fellow Kentucky Wildcats alum Karl-Anthony Towns drove for a layup.

Minnesota defeated defending champion Denver, 106-80, to take a commanding 2-0 lead in the West Conference semifinals. Murray left the dressing room before reporters could ask him about the incident.

In addition to Towns, Denver's Reggie Jackson also came close to stepping on the heat pack before Nuggets guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope spotted it and removed it.

“It’s inexcusable and dangerous,” Timberwolves coach Chris Finch said.

Finch didn't see Murray throw it and didn't blame referees for missing it.

“I’m sure it was just a mistake and an oversight” by officials, Finch said. "I’m sure there was nothing intentional by the officiating [missing it] at all. But certainly we can’t allow that to happen.”

Shortly after the heat pack was thrown, the public address announcer warned fans not to toss any objects onto the floor. But Finch, even if he didn't see Murray's throw, knew it couldn't have come from a fan.

“We tried to impress upon them [the officials] that there probably aren't many fans in the building that have a heat pack,” he said. “So it probably had to come from the bench, which they found logical."

Minnesota was pulling away to an early double-digit lead that the Timberwolves wouldn’t relinquish.

"I was the lead official, and I didn’t notice it was on the floor or where it came from until Towns scored," crew chief Marc Davis said .

Had referees seen Murray throw it, he could have been called for a technical foul.

"We weren’t aware it had come from the bench," Davis said. "If we would have been aware it came from the bench, we could have reviewed it under the hostile act trigger. The penalty would have been a technical foul."

Asked after the game whether he feared Murray could face league discipline, Nuggets coach Michael Malone said he didn't even know how the heat pack ended up on the floor.

"I know a heating pack was on the floor, but it was not in my field of vision," he said.

Murray might still have been upset about a non-call earlier in the game when Towns appeared to lower his shoulder and bulldoze through him for a layup. No foul was called.

And while Murray's tantrum could be unprecedented in NBA annals, players’ and coaches’ losing their cool and tossing objects on to the field of play isn't new:

  • Last month, the NHL suspended Minnesota Wild forward Ryan Hartman for three games by the NHL after he thr e w a stick on to the ice in frustration during a game March 30 against the Vegas Golden Knights.
  • The late Indiana basketball coach Bobby Knight was best known for his ill-tempered demeanor and a n incident in 1985 when he hurled a chair across the hardwood .
  • A Southern California high school basketball coach was suspended for six games in January after he threw his shoes onto the floor in anger at the referees. JSerra Catholic High School coach Keith Wilkinson told T he Orange County Register that he unleashed his footwear as a money-saving protest: "I threw my shoes because I figured it won’t cost me as much as a chair."

Although the NBA didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment on any penalties Murray might incur, analysts say a suspension isn’t only possible — but it’s warranted.

“He should be suspended for a game," former NBA point guard Jay Williams said Tuesday on the ESPN morning show “Get Up.”

“That was an inch away from Karl-Anthony Towns planting his right foot right on that thing. That could have hurt him. He could have been out of the game,” Williams said. “I understand it’s not precedented, but I think that was such an immature move by Jamal Murray, and that could have been a really hurtful and nasty thing to happen.”

Williams wasn't alone in his viewpoint.

"I'll be shocked if he's not" suspended, fellow ESPN analyst Tim Legler chimed in. "I don't know how the league wouldn't suspend a player for throwing an object."
