Hunter Valley

The beautiful Hunter Valley boasts world-famous wine, pristine natural wilderness, and a brilliant range of activities. Whether you plan to visit for a few hours, days or several weeks, we’ve put together everything you need to know to get the most out of a trip to the Hunter Valley.

Keen to hear what that is? Let’s crack into it:

Hunter Valley Wine Tour

What is the Hunter Valley?

Geographically speaking, the Hunter Valley is a large region in New South Wales , also called the Hunter Region. It begins at Lake Macquarie about 120 kilometres (75 miles) north of Sydney, and stretches up the coast past the town of Forster.

Further info: New South Wales Self-Drive Itineraries

The Hunter Valley extends inland towards the rural town of Murrurundi, and it’s bordered on its southern edge by the Wollemi National Park and Yengo National Park. However, usually when people say “the Hunter Valley,” they mean the fertile wine-growing area (and its many small towns) centred around Cessnock .

What is the Hunter Valley famous for?

Wine, wine and – did we mention wine?

First and foremost, the Hunter Valley has a world-class reputation when it comes to wine production. But that is just one of the things the Hunter Valley is famous for.

Exploring the Hunter Valley

Let's look at the Hunter Valley's attractions in more detail:

Wine in the Hunter Valley – tours, tastings, and tips

The Hunter Valley is among the oldest of Australia's celebrated wine regions , and some vines here date back to the early 1800s. As a result, the Hunter Valley is home to dozens of wineries, miles of vineyards, and more cellar doors than any other region in Australia.

Want to get a taste while in the area? Here’s a quick guide to Hunter Valley wine:

Famous Hunter Valley wines

The Hunter Valley built its global reputation on staunch, robust red Shiraz and sweet, dry white Semillon wines.

These two varieties are still dominant today, although a vast range of other high-quality varieties are produced across the Hunter Valley.

Wine Regions of the Hunter Valley

The designated Hunter Valley Wine Region encompasses three recognised subregions: Broke Fordwich, Pokolbin, and the Upper Hunter Valley.

Each region has distinctive characteristics; but also within each region there is a huge range of grape varieties grown and wines produced. So it’s hard to box all of them together. Lucky for us, that means there’s plenty of variety to enjoy!

The best Hunter Valley vineyards and cellar doors to visit

With more than 150 wineries offering cellar door tastings and dozens of vineyards open for tours, it’s hard to choose the best among Hunter Valley winemakers. The following stalwarts won’t disappoint any visitor:

Tyrell’s Vineyards , operating since 1858, is among the most distinguished of Australian family wine establishments. They also offer excellent tours every day, providing the best general introduction and overview of the production, history, and importance of wine in the Hunter Valley.

The Pepper Tree Cellar Door provides the quintessential Hunter Valley wine-tasting experience, replete with a superb setting and stunning views. If you’re short on time and looking for a one-stop shop to get a taste of numerous Hunter Valley varieties at their best, in one place, then this is a sound option.

Worried about drinking and driving? Take a wine tour.

There’s an endless selection of wine tour operators in the Hunter Valley, covering something to suit every budget. You can pick and choose wineries and destinations on your own bespoke private tour; or jump into a budget-friendly group tour, which will take you around several vineyards and tastings by minivan.

Hunter Wine Tours

Golf, gastronomy, and other attractions in the Hunter Valley

Despite its deserved reputation, wine is far from the be-all and end-all of what Hunter Valley has to offer visitors:

Hunter Valley Restaurants

An exquisite fine-dining scene has grown up alongside Hunter Valley’s famous wine industry.

Restaurants in the region that have been awarded a prestigious Chef’s Hat in The Age Sydney Good Food Guide include Bistro Molines , Margan , and Muse Kitchen . Some other exquisite high-end restaurants are Esca Bimbadgen and Circa 1836 , a chic modern Australian fine-dining restaurant set in a restored country cottage.

More Hunter Valley restaurants in the Australian Good Food Guide

Hunter Valley Golf Courses

Following decades of wine tourism, the Hunter Valley region has also become synonymous with luxury spa retreats and championship-level golf courses. Oaks Cypress Lakes Resort is an ultra-refined, do-it-all golf resort with perfectly manicured fairways and plush on-site apartments. Alternatively, the Hunter Valley Golf & Country Club oozes Old World charm. And The Vintage Golf Club boasts an 18-hole championship course designed by Australian golf legend Greg Norman.

Luxury Hunter Valley Spa Retreats

The long list of luxury spas in the Hunter Valley features large facilities like Hunter Valley Reflections Day Spa and Heavenly Hunter Massage at Mercure Resort .

There are also many smaller, exclusive sites offering a mixture of chic and unique: for example, The Spa at Chateau Elan , and the secluded Cabins in the Clouds , a collection of luxury wooden mountain cabins with verandahs, incredible views, and full-service spa treatments.

But it’s not all about glitz and glamour in the Hunter Valley. There’s also plenty of natural beauty and wilderness to explore, too. Plus unique local wildlife, rich cultural heritage, and plenty of charming historical towns to discover.

With that in mind, let’s take a closer look at what activities and attractions you can expect :

Hunter Valley Golf

Outdoor activities in the Hunter Valley

The Hunter Valley region encompasses several World Heritage nature reserves and multiple national parks.

So, with all that natural beauty, it’s hardly surprising that there’s no shortage of excellent outdoor activities on offer:

Bushwalking and hiking in the Hunter Valley

Short walks For a rewarding panoramic viewpoint, hike up to Bimbadeen Lookout , Mount Bright Lookout , and Pokolbin Mountains Road Lookout. All are easily accessible from Cessnock within a few hours. The trails are challenging but manageable for all ability levels.

Another short but sweet option is the easy 30-minute City Farm walk to a ruined farmhouse. Or, try the beautiful Hunter Lookout to Glen Road Loop Track (1 hour), and the 3.9 km (2.4 mile) Scotts Point Loop .

80 of the best Hunter Valley Walking Tracks

Day walks For a slightly longer Hunter Valley day walk, take the gentle 3.5-hour trail from Yarramalong to Cedar Bush , or the more challenging track from Yarramalong to Forest Road (also 3 hours 30 mins). For a more full-on, full-day bush walk, tackle the 7-hour, 17-kilometre (10.5 mile) Congewai Track Head (East) to Watagan Headquarters .

Multi-day walking trails Countless sections of the Great North Walk cut through the hills and landscapes of the Hunter Valley, so you can start and finish long-distance trails when and where you like. Some standard favourites, though, include the 2-day section from Somersby, through the Jilliby State Conservation Area, to Yarramalong via Stringy Bark Point and Bumble Hill .

Serious multi-day hikes If you’re looking to escape the real world and get deep into the forest for several days, the 4-day, 61-kilometre (40 mile) Basin Campsite to Heaton Gap Walk will guarantee just that. It passes through parts of the Olney State Forest, the Watagan State Forest, and the Congewai Valley.

Hunter Valley Hiking

Fishing, swimming, kayaking, and water-skiing in the Hunter Valley

Lake St Clair, nestled beneath the foothills of the Mount Royal Range, is a favourite local spot for swimming, sailing, water-skiing, and sunbathing during the hot summer months.

Lake St Clair is also one of the best places to go fishing in the Hunter Valley, too:

The NSW State Fisheries ensure the lake is regularly stocked with healthy levels of golden and silver perch, Australian bass, and catfish, as well as several other species.

You need to get a fishing license first, but that’s easily done – either at the Singleton Visitor Information and Enterprise Centre or directly from the Lake St Clair caretaker on-site.

Hot air ballooning in the Hunter Valley

Alongside wine, hot air balloon rides and million-dollar sunset photos are probably the things the Hunter Valley is most famous for. And considering the landscape and scenery, it’s hardly surprising.

Most trips last around an hour, which the perfect amount of time to soak up the pristine patchwork of vineyards, fields, and rolling hills covered in eucalyptus trees.

Sunset is the perfect – and most popular – time for hot air ballooning (especially for couples and honeymooners), for obvious reasons.

The Hunter Valley hosts an Annual Balloon Festival every October, which is an interesting time to visit, as you get to see the sky filled with colourful bubbles floating above the landscape.

Scenic flights in the Hunter Valley

Another aviation option for getting unforgettable views of the Hunter Valley is to take a scenic helicopter ride or aeroplane flight for fantastic aerial views.

At the other end of the adrenaline scale, you can take a thrilling aerobatic ride in a supercharged warbird jet plane with Aerohunter . You won’t have much time to take in the views. But it’s an experience you won’t forget in a hurry.

Enjoy the Hunter Valley’s quaint towns and historical villages

Sure, the countryside is gorgeous. But that doesn’t mean you should skimp on time spent in the Hunter Valley’s charming towns.

Pokolbin – At the heart of Hunter Valley wine production, this pretty town is full of heritage buildings and surrounded by some of the country’s best-known vineyards. Don’t miss the fabulous Hunter Valley Gardens and their famous Storybook Garden.

Cessnock – The biggest Hunter Valley town and gateway to the vineyards, Cessnock is home to award-winning restaurants, the acclaimed Marthaville Arts and Cultural Centre, Cessnock Regional Art Gallery, and the ever-popular Hunter Valley Zoo.

  • Broke – The hub of its eponymous wine region, Broke is a tiny, beautiful village with a fantastic monthly market. It also has direct access to Yengo National Park and its incredible Aboriginal heritage, including the Finchley Aboriginal engravings, which are detailed along the fabulous Finchley Cultural Walk.

Planning Your Trip to the Hunter Valley

How far is the hunter valley from sydney.

The Hunter Valley region starts just over 100 kilometres (65 miles) north of Sydney. The main Hunter Valley towns are not much further away: Wollombi is roughly 128 kilometres (80 miles), and Cessnock 154 kilometres (94 miles), north of Sydney.

For an additional reference point, Cessnock is 52 kilometres (32 miles), and Wollombi 80 kilometres (50 miles), west of Newcastle.

How do you get to the Hunter Valley from Sydney?

No matter which part of it you’re planning to travel to, or how you’re getting there, the Hunter Valley is only a few hours away from central Sydney.

Hunter Valley Driving Directions from Sydney:

If you’re driving to the Hunter Valley from central Sydney, head over the Sydney Harbour Bridge and get onto the Pacific Highway (A1). Then turn onto the Pacific Motorway (M1) at Wahroonga.

From Wahroonga, you have two options:

  • Driving to Cessnock – Follow the M1 for about 100 kilometres (65 miles), then take the B82 exit ramp at Freeman’s Drive and follow the signs along the B82 to Cessnock. It should take around 1 hour 50 minutes total from Sydney.
  • Driving to Wollombi – Follow the M1 for about 40 kilometres (25 miles) until the Calga Interchange at Peats Ridge, where you should exit onto Tourist Drive 33. Enjoy this beautiful route through the mountains, which will lead you straight into Wollombi. The total driving time from Sydney should be around 1 hour 45 minutes.

Driving in Australia: A bigger deal than you might think

Can you catch a train to the Hunter Valley?

In fact, there are two options for taking the train from Sydney to the Hunter Valley:

  • NSW TrainLink – The North West line offers direct services from Sydney Central Station to Maitland (3 hours) and Singleton (3 hours 10 minutes). From either town, there are many local bus services to get you to all other Hunter Valley towns. As well as taxi and private transfer services, if you prefer to get straight to your Hunter Valley accommodation.
  • The Hunter Line – Alternatively, depending on where you book your Hunter Valley accommodation, it might make more sense to take the train from Sydney to Newcastle, and then pick up the Hunter Line. The main advantage is that this dedicated train service into the Hunter Valley stops at many stations and smaller towns along the way, including Tarro, Thornton, and Branxton. It will take a little over 3 hours total from Sydney Central.

When is the best time to visit the Hunter Valley?

Choosing the best time of year to visit the Hunter Valley depends largely on what you want to do while you’re there:

Spring (September to November) is the best time for hot-air ballooning or for visiting the Hunter Valley gardens, as the post-winter pastures become a tapestry of blooming wildflowers and lush green fields after the winter rains.

Summer (December to February) is the best time for cellar-door wine tastings and vineyard tours, as it’s harvest season and the wineries are a hive of activity. It’s also the best time for swimming.

Autumn (March to May) is the perfect time for hiking in the Hunter Valley’s national parks, with cooler, pleasant temperatures and minimal rainfall.

Winter (June to August) can be tough in the Hunter Valley, with high rainfall and occasional cold snaps keeping you mostly indoors. But if you want to avoid the crowds and have total tranquillity and serious serenity, then this is definitely the time to come.

When is the best season to visit Australia?

The Conditions of Sale, Terms of Guarantee, the glossary, if any, and all other contents of this lot are subject to amendment by us by the posting of such amendments on the Charitybuzz website (www.charitybuzz.com). The property will be offered by us as agent for the Seller, unless the lot indicates otherwise.

Your participation through bidding, purchase and/or registration constitutes acknowledgement and agreement to be contractually bound by these terms and conditions, including agreement to pay the buyer’s premium, and all other fees and charges listed herein.

A buyer’s premium is the additional charge on the auction hammer price or winning bid, which is paid by the winner. Buyer’s premiums on Charitybuzz currently range from 15%–20%, based on the final hammer price of the auction lot as follows:

20% up to $50,000 15% above $50,000

Charitybuzz reserves the right to change these calculations at any time.

Prospective bidders should inspect the lot page for an item before bidding to determine its condition, size, and whether or not it has been repaired or restored. If that information is not available on the site, prospective bidders assume the responsibility of contacting Charitybuzz to inquire for additional details.

Each Bidder’s decision to bid and determination of their bid amount should be based upon their own examination of the item(s) in question. In any purchase or sale, the estimated value of the item(s) is reflected by the price. The bidder hereby assumes all risks of valuation concerning any and all purchases.

We reserve the right to withdraw any lot before, during and after the sale and shall have no liability whatsoever for such a withdrawal.

All items are sold AS IS, WHERE IS with all faults without any representations or warranties by us or the Seller as to merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, the correctness of the e-catalogue or other description of the physical condition, size, quality, rarity, important, medium, frame, provenance, exhibitions, literature, or historical relevance. No statement anywhere, whether oral or written, whether made in on Charitybuzz.com, an advertisement, a lot receipt, or elsewhere, shall be deemed such a warranty, representation or assumption of liability. We and the Seller make no representations and warranties, express or implied, as to whether the purchaser acquires any copyrights, including but not limited to, any reproduction rights in any property.

We and the Seller are not responsible for errors and omissions on Charitybuzz.com, glossary, or any supplemental material. Charitybuzz will not be responsible or liable for damage to frames and glass coverings, regardless of the cause. ALL SALES ARE FINAL.

A. Entering Bids

To bid, find a lot page, enter a value in the bid box, and click “Bid.” If you click “Bid” on a lot, you will be prompted to either log in to your Charitybuzz account, or create a new one if you do not have one already.

Once you’ve created an account you will be presented with the lot details, conditions of sale, and standard shipping and redemption details. Once you have accepted the Conditions of Sale, you may proceed with placing a bid on that lot. All bids placed for any lot are governed by the Conditions of Sale for that lot.

You may bid at or above the starting bid displayed as the “Current Price” in a lot page’s bid box. The current leading bid, along with a list of a lot’s full bidding history, will be visible to other users. If the status of your bid changes, you will receive notifications via email and push (if you have the Charitybuzz App installed).

B. Cancellation Rights

As soon you place and confirm your bid amount, your bid is submitted. You accept and agree that bids submitted by you are final. Charitybuzz is not responsible or liable for any problems, delays, or other issues resulting from the use of the Internet, including but not limited to transmission, execution, or processing of Bids.

Charitybuzz nor the Seller is responsible for any errors in bidding. A bidder should make certain to bid on the correct lot. The Bidder should make sure the bid price they enter (including any taxes or fees) is the price they are willing and able to pay. Once the hammer has fallen and Charitybuzz has announced the winning Bidder, that Bidder is unconditionally bound to pay for that lot, even if the Bidder has made an error.

A bid(s) entered by mistake on the part of a bidder is NOT grounds for cancellation of that bid. Each bidder is responsible for his or her own account and bids. In addition, allowing access to another who enters a bid without your knowledge is NOT grounds for cancellation of a bid.

C. Fraudulent Bidding

All Bidders must meet Charitybuzz’s qualifications to bid. Any Bidder who is not a client in good standing of Charitybuzz may be disqualified at Charitybuzz’s sole discretion and will not be awarded lots. Such determination may be made by Charitybuzz in its sole discretion, at any time prior to, during, or even after the close of the Auction. Charitybuzz reserves the right to exclude any person from the auction.

Bids will not be accepted from minor persons under eighteen (18) years of age without a parent’s written consent containing an acknowledgement of the conditions herein and indicating their agreement to be bound thereby on behalf of the bidder.

If an entity places a bid, then the person executing the bid on behalf of the entity agrees to personally guarantee payment for any successful bid.

Any bidder that represents a purchaser is personally and individually responsible for any obligations of the purchaser set forth in these terms and conditions. All purchasers purchasing pursuant to a valid resale license will need to provide appropriate documentation for removal of state sales tax.

D. Winning & Disputes

The successful bidder is the highest bidder acknowledged by Charitybuzz. In the event of any dispute between bidders, or in the event of doubt on Charitybuzz’s part as to the validity of any bid, Charitybuzz will have final discretion either to determine the successful bidder or to re-offer and resell the lot in question. If any dispute arises after the sale, Charitybuzz’s sale record is conclusive. While Charitybuzz makes every effort to guarantee accuracy, in the event of an error, and a lot is accidentally declared sold by mistake, Charitybuzz reserves the right to cancel the sale and relist the lot in its sole discretion.

By accepting the Conditions of Sale, Bidder personally and unconditionally guarantees payment.

Title to any lot remains with the Seller, any secured party of the Seller, or assignee of Seller, as the case may be, until the lot is paid for in full by the Bidder. Charitybuzz reserves the right to require payment in full before delivering any lot to the successful bidder.

A maximum bid is a secret amount you enter, that represents the maximum amount you are willing to bid. It is higher than the current price and also higher than the next allowable minimum bid amount. If you enter a maximum bid, we’ll bid on your behalf up to that maximum bid amount in response to other bids, according to Charitybuzz’s bidding tiers.

The value and status of your maximum bid will be visible only to you, unless it is the leading bid.

Charitybuzz strongly encourages the use of Max Bids to increase your chances of winning.

When an auction reaches the final 10 minutes before it closes, any bids received in that final 10 minutes push out the previous close time by an additional 10 minutes. This recurring 10 minute extension is known as “Extended Bidding,” and is signified by a banner above the auction timer on the lot page.

This dynamically extending period is designed to protect against a practice commonly known as “sniping” or “last second bidding” where bidders attempt to enter a quick bid in the final seconds of an auction to secure a win before competing bidders have a chance to counter.

Live bids lots are a special type of auction lot on Charitybuzz. Live bid lots on Charitybuzz are paired with a real world, physical auction, where that real world auction is often scheduled to occur at a later date. You can distinguish Live Bid lots by the “Live Bid” label in the title of the lot, and additional description text at the start of the lots “Overview” tab.

In a Live Bid lot on Charitybuzz, a lot is created that is similar to any other auction lot on the site. These special lots last for similar amounts of time and bidding occurs normally by our users.

Things start to differ after a Charitybuzz Live Bid lot closes. After it closes and the winning bidder is chosen, that winning bidder’s bid amount or (if it exists) the max bid amount associated with that winning bid, are taken and entered into the associated real world auction. For example, if a bidder on Charitybuzz wins at $12,000 with an unrealized max bid of $15,000, then that $15,000 dollar amount is passed on into the real world auction.

Before the winning bidders bid or max bid amount is passed on, someone from Charitybuzz contacts that winner after the Charitybuzz lot closes and before the real world auction opens. This is to confirm if the bidder would like to increase their bid or max bid amount before it’s entered into the real world auction.

What happens during the real world auction? Each individual one may vary. Charitybuzz does not own or operate any real world auctions, nor does Charitybuzz require any partners to follow a specific auction model. We make no claims to the consistency of real world auction experiences and encourage bidders to contact us for more details as needed.

In our experience, real world auctions tied to Charitybuzz Live Bid lots are typically executed by our partners in a few common ways.

In one scenario, if an auction house and an auctioneer is present, winning live bids from Charitybuzz Live Bid lots are treated as “absentee” bids. This normally means that the Charitybuzz winning bid is placed in the auctioneers books as a bid. As the auctioneer conducts the auction, they will bring up and enter the Charitybuzz winning bid during the course of the auction as the current price or next minimum bid value approaches the Charitybuzz winner’s bid amount. In this scenario, other people in the real world room are expected to bid against the auctioneer, not the Charitybuzz winning bidder. If no one is bidding in the room, the auctioneer will typically keep bidding up the price until the Charitybuzz Live Bid winner wins the real world auction.

In other models, an audience member (including, but not limited to a charity partner employee) might act as a proxy for the winning Charitybuzz bidder. They will usually bid on behalf of the winning Charitybuzz Live Bid winner during the normal course of that auction, using whatever means provided for that auction house (i.e. paddles, etc.)

After the auction is completed, someone from Charitybuzz contacts our bidder to let them know the outcome. If that Charitybuzz Live Bid bidder has won, payment occurs as usual. If that Charitybuzz Live Bid bidder did not win, they will be notified accordingly.

A reserve bid is a bid placed by Charitybuzz on behalf of the seller up to the minimum reserve (if applicable). Bids placed by Charitybuzz on behalf of the seller up to the amount of the reserve, will be counted toward the total bid count displayed on the lot page’s bid box.

Refunds are rewarded on a case by case basis and at the sole discretion of Charitybuzz, LLC.

Experiences auctioned on Charitybuzz.com go through a specific redemption process to coordinate details and complete. That process normally involves messaging and scheduling between all parties (i.e. winners, charities, sellers, venues). Details discussed include but are not limited to experience dates, arrival procedures, airfare, hotel accommodations, restrictions, will-call requirements, and any other on-site notes. Scheduling requires an initial request sent by the customer, and a followup confirmation submitted by relevant redemption contacts.

By using Charitybuzz to bid and win lots, bidders agree to use the Redemption Center exclusively (where enabled) to message and schedule all experiences – doing so is a requirement of redeeming experiences through Charitybuzz. In addition, bidders agree that they are bound by all site terms of use and auction conditions of sale.

Significant safety reforms made 12 months on from the Hunter Valley bus crash

The side of a bus looking from the front next to a footpath

When a bus carrying wedding guests crashed in the middle of the night almost a year ago, killing 10 people and injuring 25 others, it not only prompted a nationwide outpouring of grief, it started a movement to address bus safety.

As loved ones of the Hunter Valley bus crash victims prepare to mark the heartbreaking first anniversary of the tragedy on June 11, steps continue to be taken to improve bus safety to ensure a similar tragedy never happens again.

In the aftermath of the crash, survivors, victims' families and road and transport experts formed a group called Stop Bus Tragedies.

Adam Bray, who lost his son Zach in the bus crash, is one of the group's representatives.

Mr Bray said he began thinking more about bus safety gaps in the days following the crash.

"The word preventable just kept popping up over and over again and that added on top of the initial shock, subsequent grief and, of course, trauma," Mr Bray said.

"It invoked anger because that means it's not an accident. It's something that totally could have been prevented."

Adam Bray, right, and Zach Bray who died in the hunter bus crash of June 11, 2023.

State government implements reforms

Following the crash, the state government expanded the scope of its Bus Industry Taskforce to examine safety management and regulation.

Five recommendations were made in its first report, including seatbelt reforms, a road safety campaign to promote seatbelt use and an examination of the risks associated with standing on buses.

The state government said work had begun to implement all five recommendations, including working with bus operators and drivers to educate passengers on the requirement to wear a seatbelt, while a statewide seatbelt advertising campaign is planned.

The taskforce's second report made recommendations to improve bus reliability and equity.

"We made significant, immediate and rapid progress with [the state government's] taskforce to blend our ideas, blend our findings, blend our recommendations together," Mr Bray said.

"To come up with some progressive safety reforms, preventative reforms to ensure this doesn't happen again."

Call for federal bus taskforce

Mr Bray said the federal government was initially slow to acknowledge coach safety gaps but had become more proactive and engaged.

"It's painfully slow," he said.

"I'm not a bureaucrat, so it can be frustrating for me to understand the process, but they've identified, accepted and are working on solutions."

Dean Moule, who is the national technical manager for the Bus Industry Confederation, the peak body for Australia's bus and coach industry, said there had been a significant increase in regulations implemented since the Hunter Valley crash.

"Normally, in any given year, we would see one or two," he said.

"In the last 12 months, we've seen eight brand new regulations."

Mr Moule said the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator had expanded its We All Need Space campaign, to ensure the public knew coaches needed more room to turn and brake and there were plans to increase signage and awareness about wearing seatbelts.

"Such as audible announcements when the door closes, [and] signs on the back of seats not dissimilar to what you would see on an aircraft," Mr Moule said.

There have been calls for a federal bus taskforce to be established , similar to the one that operates in New South Wales.

A bus safety working group was set up late last year, comprising state and territory governments and bus industry representatives, tasked with improving vehicle safety.

It is currently examining options to strengthen seat belt use in coaches.

Mr Moule said he would still welcome a taskforce.

"We would certainly think [a taskforce] could look at things like accident data collection at a national level," he said.

"And also infrastructure to further enhance safety for all the road going public."

In a statement, Assistant Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Carol Brown said $21 million had been committed to the National Road Safety Data Hub in the 2024–25 Budget.

"We also continually review, consult on and update Australia's legislated road vehicle standards, known as the Australian Design Rules [ADRs]," she said.

"In the past 18 months, the government has made a range of new ADRs that apply to heavy vehicles.

"These standards include new requirements for lane departure warning systems, reversing technologies and advanced emergency braking."

What's next?

Mr Moule said other areas that could be examined were more training for first responders attending bus crashes and ways to modernise the Australian bus fleet.

"Another area that's of possibility to change is to incentivise the replacement of older vehicles," he said.

"Replace them with newer vehicles, which also then would have newer safety technologies on board."

The NSW Bus Industry Taskforce's third report release is imminent and is expected to address driver monitoring and telematics, which are technologies that assist drivers.

Mr Bray said his ultimate goal was to make sure coach and bus travel was safe Australia-wide.

"So that drivers, passengers, school children, everybody who needs to ride on a coach or a bus can arrive to work, arrive to school and more importantly arrive home."
