Virgin Voyages' guide to Roatán

The riches of Roatán

The Bay Islands, three alluring isles off the northern coast of Honduras, are home to lush jungle canopies, endless white-sand beaches, and electric blue waters. Pirates, the Spanish, the English, and just about everyone else fought over Roatán, Utila, and Guanaja, but the coveted jewel of Honduras has always been Roatán. Its true beauty lies beneath the waves in the Mesoamerican Reef — attracting scuba divers, snorkeling enthusiasts, and thousands of species of marine life.

Roatán Cruise Port

Roatan Cruise Center

There are two cruise ports located on the island of Roatán.

Mahogany Bay Cruise Center

Carnival Cruise Line built this port/cruise center, which can accommodate two mega-ships. Carnival cruise ships dock here, along with Princess and Holland America cruise lines.

Mahogany Bay Cruise Center is a gigantic 20-acre welcome center with a “private” beach. Many cruisers will spend the day within the Cruise Center visiting the restaurants, bars, duty-free shops, craft markets, or just relaxing on the beach.

The Port of Roatán (Also Known as Coxen Hole)

This port can accommodate three cruise ships at a time. Ships from all of the other cruise lines (besides those mentioned above) typically dock here.

This port is within walking distance of Roatán island’s largest city, Coxen Hole. The port terminal has restrooms, taxi stands, tour and excursion pick-ups, and an ATM.

What Cruise Passengers Need to Know About Roatán Cruise Port

Roatan

Roatán’s official currency is the Honduran lempira (HNL). However, cash (including USD!) reigns supreme here. You can pay with U.S. Dollars on Roatán, just expect to get change back in lempiras.

The official language in Roatán is Spanish, but English (with a Creole twist) is widely spoken.

The time zone in Roatán, Honduras, is Central Standard Time, which is one hour ahead of the Eastern time zone.

Roatán is an island in Central America located just off the Honduras coast. Its climate is tropical rainforest, with temperatures hovering in the 80-degree Fahrenheit range year-round.

Mid-July through October is considered the “warm season,” with temperatures in the upper 80s and low 90s. Roatán is very humid year-round, with humidity reaching 90% in the last four months of the year.

The rainy season in Roatán is from September through July.

Getting Around Roatán

The island of Roatán is 48 miles long and 5 miles wide at its widest point. It is safest to book tours (whether private or cruise ship excursions) to get around Roatán.

Whether you port in Mahogany Bay Cruise Center or Coxen Bay, activities are within walking distance. The Mahogany Bay Cruise Center is a 20-acre complex with a beach, restaurants, bars, and shopping areas.

Coxen Hole is Roatán’s largest city. Activities and amenities, including shopping, restaurants, and bars, are within walking distance of the port.

Public Transit

There are many taxis and buses available for transport in Roatán. The “buses” are typically 16-passenger vans running regular routes between Coxen Hole and West End or French Harbour.

Taxis can be private “privado,” which costs a little more, or “colectivo,” which means you might pick up and drop off other people along your route. This is a fun way to chat with locals but might take a little longer to get to and from your destination.

Car Rentals

Car rentals are available on Roatán, with rental kiosks near the cruise terminal. The island is easy to navigate, just watch for horses and cows on the road.

The Best Roatán Shore Excursions

Roatan shore excursions

Roatán has a different vibe than other Caribbean cruise ports . This Honduran island has a Central American influence with a Caribbean twist.

Roatán is situated on top of exposed ancient coral reefs, and just off-shore is the second largest reef system in the world: the Mesoamerican Reef System, also known as the Great Mayan Reef.

The diverse culture and unique natural wonders of Roatán make for a one-of-a-kind cruise port experience. Here are 22 of the best Roatán Shore Excursions.

1. Mahogany Bay Cruise Center

Carnival designed this 20-acre port complex to be an excursion in itself. The 800-foot-long white sand Mahogany Beach is part of the Cruise Center. You can get off the ship and spend the day reading on a beach chair or swimming in the crystal clear waters.

This beach gets busier and louder as the day goes on, so grab your chair early or choose a different beach if you are looking for quiet. The Cruise Center has a mix of duty-free shops and retailers, including Diamonds International, Del Sol, and Piranha Joes.

If you are hungry, there are several restaurants in the Cruise Center. Stop by Fat Tuesday’s atop Monkey Hill for amazing views, some Caribbean Jerk chicken, and a cold and refreshing “Banana Banshee” Daquiri.

2. Magical Flying Beach Chair

This is a fun experience that is unique to Roatán. Immediately after disembarking at Mahogany Bay Port, there is a chairlift that you can take to transport you to nearby Mahogany Bay Beach.

You’ll find the Magical Flying Beach Chair up the hill and to the right of the Cruise Center. You can purchase an “all-day pass” for unlimited use.

Be aware that the Flying Beach Chair frequently stops for people to get on and off. The chance to see iguanas in the trees and the magnificent ocean view make this a pleasant option.

3. Shop ‘Til you Drop at The Town Center Coxen Bay

Roatan cruise port shopping

There is a fantastic variety of duty-free boutiques and local souvenir shops in The Town Center shopping area at the Port of Roatán.

Be sure to stop at “Yaba Ding Ding” for local handmade arts and crafts, including Garifuna and Lenca pottery artwork. If you love photography, you’ll marvel at the underwater photos by Roatán local Shawn Jackson in his gallery here.

4. Snorkel, Scuba, and Relax at West Bay Beach

The world’s second-longest reef system, the Mesoamerican Reef, lies just off the coast of West Bay Beach. This beach is 30-45 minutes from the cruise ship docks and has some of the best snorkeling and diving in Roatán.

The beach is public and free to enter. However, paying a nearby resort for their day-use fee gives you access to chairs and a break from the vendors trying to sell their goods and services.

If you want to snorkel or scuba, water taxis from West Bay Beach will take you closer to the reef.

5. Cuddle a Sloth at an Animal Sanctuary

Roatan sloth

Several animal sanctuaries exist in Roatán. These excursions typically include the opportunity to hold a sloth, feed monkeys, and interact with parrots and macaws.

You can book a private tour, which is a little more expensive but allows you to move through the animal sanctuary (and have the experiences!) more quickly. This experience takes around an hour, so it is a good one to bundle with other excursions.

6. Spend the Day at The Little French Key

This resort is a one-stop excursion spot. You can pay a fee to participate in activities like horseback riding, swimming with pigs, massages, manicures, snorkeling and scuba diving, kayaking, rope swings, and a gift shop. They also have a mini zoo where they can interact with animals.

Look for the VIP pass, which includes drink vouchers, a lunch plate, a massage, horseback riding, and access to a less-crowded beach. Little French Key is a 30-minute drive from the port.

7. Taste the Unique Flavor of Wild Honduran Chocolate at a Chocolate Factory

Roatan Chocolate Experience

Cacao beans in Honduras are unique because they are grown in the wild instead of on plantations. Several chocolate factories can be visited to try this tasty treat.

Factory tours are usually a part of a “bundled” excursion. If you are a chocolate lover, this is a “must” for treats and souvenir shopping in Roatán.

8. Scuba Dive at the Mayan Reef

You don’t want to miss the opportunity to scuba dive in the second-largest reef system in the world: the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef. Scuba diving is one of the top things cruisers recommend for porting here. Roatán has excursions available for every level of diver, from beginner to scuba-certified.

The Mesoamerican Barrier Reef is home to diverse sea life, including colorful fish, coral, sea turtles, eels, stingrays, sponges, starfish, shrimps, and lobster. Most Scuba excursions take place on the West Side, nearest the reef, and will take several hours.

There are many dive shops in Roatán. You can book a beginner scuba excursion, where you learn scuba basics in the safety of a pool and then venture to the reef. Many boutique diving excursions will allow you to use your scuba certifications for magnificent dives in the deep.

9. See the Island’s Diversity while Horseback Riding

Horseback riding is a relaxing way to escape the crowds and see the diversity of this beautiful island.

There are many different types of rides available, from beach horseback riding to mountain trails. Some excursions offer a combo that includes a ride through local villages, up into the mountains, and even a ride along the beach.

10. Bike Around an Island on Hydrobikes

If you are looking for an out-of-the-ordinary water sports experience, hydrobiking is an exciting choice. Hydrobikes have pedals like a traditional bicycle, but are on floats so you glide on top of the ocean.

Your guide will take you on a tour around a private island near French Key. Hydrobikes are easy for all skill levels and are an active way to spend a few hours in Roatán. Just be sure to put on plenty of sunscreen.

11. Eat and Beach at Ginger’s on Half Moon Bay

Half-Moon Bay is located on the West End of Roatán. It is an exceptional beach for swimming and snorkeling, and the location of a delicious Caribbean Grill called Ginger’s.

You can use the beach chairs at Ginger’s if you order food OR just come for the delicious fresh seafood. Catch a game on the TV and order coconut shrimp and a frozen mojito.

12. Cruise Through the Mangroves

Located on the East End of Roatán, this excursion includes transportation to Oakridge’s traditional Caribbean fishing village. The town is an interesting visit, with buildings constructed on stilts over the water and fishing boats bobbing in the bay.

In Oakridge, you’ll board an authentic cayuco (a small motorized canoe), and travel with a guide through a canal dug out in the mangroves many years ago to connect the harbors and bays. Parts of the tunnel are barely wide enough for the boats to get through.

The land in mangrove forests provides shelter for migratory birds and monkeys, so there is a good chance to see (and hear) unique Roatán wildlife.

13. Spot Sea Turtles Underwater and On Land

If you love sea turtles, Roatán is an outstanding place to see them in their natural habitat. This island has three types of sea turtles: Hawksbill, Green, and Loggerhead Turtles.

The best time to see sea turtles on land is during their nesting period from July to August, when they come ashore to nest on West Bay Beach and Paya Bay Beach. If you are in Roatán during the non-nesting months, you can also observe these beautiful sea creatures gliding in the crystal-clear waters.

Dive and snorkel excursions are available that will take you to spots where sea turtles frequent. Typically, they are on the West End.

14. Take a Historical Dune Buggy Tour to Punta Gorda

This half-day excursion will take you on an adventure up to the North Shore and the historic fishing village of Punta Gorda. Drivers need to be 16 years or older and have a driver’s license.

Follow a tour guide on an adventurous dune buggy drive to the Punta Gorda community. Once you’ve arrived, enjoy a dance and music show by the Garinagu (Garifuna), natives of Roatán.

Afterwards, you can purchase lunch from nearby restaurants, including Garifuna favorites like Machuca, a delicious mash of green and sweet plantains rolled into bites and dunked into tasty soups.

15. Monkey Around at Gumbalimba Park

This 20-acre beachfront adventure park offers many options for adventure seekers. Your tour guide will teach you about the history of the island of Roatán and its people while you hike around and observe animals, including monkeys and macaws, roaming in their natural environment.

After you’ve met the monkeys, you can get a monkey’ s-eye view of the park’s Trail Canopy Tour. You’ll zipline between 17 cable platforms extending from 120 to 500 feet in length.

Gumbalina also has water activities, including kayaking and going to the beach.

16. See Fish Without Getting Wet on a Glass Bottom Boat Ride

Glass bottom boats depart regularly from the beach at West Bay on Roatán. If you cannot snorkel or scuba but want to see the wonders of the reef, this is a fantastic way to do it.

These boats have windows that are underwater in a “semi-submarine” experience. Choose a glass-bottom boat ride if you want to witness the gorgeous marine life in Roatán without the hassle of sand and sunburns.

17. Underwater Scooter like a BOSS

If you want a unique scuba-like experience without the certification, you can book a BOSS (Breathing Observation Submersible Scooter) excursion. Your adventure will start with a catamaran ride out to the reef. Once you arrive, you’ll have the option to use snorkel equipment or try out the BOSS.

The BOSS submersible electric scooter has an oxygen-filled breathing helmet attached. You’ll be able to breathe freely while you scooter around 8 feet below the water surface, viewing the colorful marine life in Roatán.

Things to Do in Roatan Cruise Port

18. Learn About Local Flora at the Carambola Botanical Garden

The 40-acre botanical garden is home to a variety of beautiful plants, including orchids, fruit and nut trees, flowering plants, medicinal plants, the world-famous Honduran mahogany tree, and the popular “Chocolate Tree.”

The botanical gardens can be visited as a self-guided tour, or for more money, you can have an informational guided tour by the founder of the garden. Plan on walking along the jungle paths for anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours.

19. Snorkel Right-off Tabyana Beach

The reef is more accessible from this beautiful beach. Unlike other beaches in Roatán, which require a short boat ride to reach the reef, you can explore it about 300 feet off the shore of Tabyana Beach, making it one of the best beaches for snorkeling.

Some excursions include snorkeling at Tabyana, or you can take a 20-25 minute taxi cab ride from the port.

You can relax on towels on the public beach or pay a resort fee to use nearby chairs. Local beach vendors aren’t allowed in roped-off areas, so if you want to relax without interruption, the resort fee is worth the money.

20. Spend the Day on the Private Island of Maya Key

Maya Key is a small private island that is located 3 minutes from the Roatán Cruise Terminal and 15 minutes from Mahogany Bay Cruise Terminal.

This 11.5-acre island has two beaches, a 70,000-gallon pool, an animal rescue center, jungle garden paths, a Mayan Interpretation Center, A Honduras Art Exhibit, a restaurant, and a shopping center.

Day passes for Maya Key start at $35 and include a tour of the wildlife center, access to the beaches and pools, and the use of restroom facilities. It will cost extra for the museums, food and drinks, lockers and shopping.

21. Roatan Craft Markets

Roatan Rusty Fish craft market

There are some awesome craft markets in Roatan. Many items are hand made by locals. One great shop is Rusty Fish, which uses recyclable materials.

22. Sample Local Rum at the Roatán Rum Company

Rum cakes, rum cigars, and, of course, rum are the stars of this excursion. Located between West End and West Bay, the Roatán Rum Company offers samples of unique artisan rums (dark chocolate, spiced, and Caribbean coconut, to name a few) and rum cakes.

Roatán Rum Co. is located right across from El Faro Lighthouse and next door to a small souvenir market. Many excursions combine the three.

23. Choose Your Adventure with a Customizable “Best of Roatán” Tour

If you are having a hard time deciding between all of these exciting excursions, a “Best of” tour might be the way to have your rum cake and eat it, too.

You can choose the activities you want and have the expertise of a local driver to get you where you need to go. Roatán is small enough that you should be able to fit in several activities, and tour guides are often flexible with the weather.

A customizable tour is a great way to experience all that Roatán has to offer.

We recently went on Royal Carribeans Allure of the Seas and enjoyed a stop in Roatan Honduras.  We were really excited to pick a few of the best shore excursions in Roatan Honduras.

We had a group of 22 so we decided to divide and conquer and try out a few of the cruise excursions Roatan had to offer.

We did a lot of research before our cruise, and what we found was in Honduras it was significantly cheaper to book with Viator compared to what the cruise line offered.

In this post, we are going to list the best excursions in Roatan! These Honduras excursions are fun and all have very high ratings.  Some of the Roatan tours will include beach activities while others are focused on more adventurous excursions in Roatan.

Cruising to Hondarus

Allure of the Seas things to do - Ship

Before we jump into all of the fun cruise excursions Roatan has to offer we need to talk about the different Roatan cruise ports in Honduras.

Roatan has two cruise ports.

Mahagony Bay

Mahagony Bay is absolutely amazing! Carnival, Princess, and Holland America are the only cruise lines that have access to this port.  The beaches are superior and it is included in your cruise price.

This might defeat the whole purpose of my post but you really do not need to book a Roatan cruise excursion if you are on those cruise lines, unless you want to do a zip-lining tour or something in the jungle. (Roatan has some of the best ziplining in the Caribbean!)

Towne Center at Port of Roatan

All other cruise lines come into Town Center Port (Coxen Hole). You will want to book a Roatan excursion.  There isn’t too much to do at the port itself.

Because we were on Royal Caribbean, we entered this port and made sure to book a Roatan excursion.

There are lots of fun things to do in Roatan and we are going to list out our top choices for fun Roatan Cruise excursions! Let’s Go!

1. Honduras Zip Lining Tour

Best Roatan Shore Excursions Ziplining

The number one Roatan shore excursion is ziplining! Wow, zipling in Honduras is fun! There are a lot of Honduras tour companies to choose from.  We went with Anderson Company and had a fabulous time.

What Does this Roatan Excursion Include?

  • Tour Company is a Short Walk Cruise from Port
  • Beach Pass (Beach Chairs and Changing Room)
  • Transportation with a Bilingual Driver
  • Zip Line Equipment

Rating : 4.5 out of 5 Tour Length: 5 hours 30 minutes

Why choose this tour?   Because is it so much cheaper than booking through the cruise line plus this tour includes 3 activities:  Ziplining, monkey and sloth sanctuary, and a stop at the beach.

Everything is included, and there are no hidden fees! It also has Free Cancellation !

We did a ton of research and because we had a group of 22 we wanted to make sure we were getting the best price! This is the best price!

 Our Review

We were really nervous that our 8-year-old old who is a little scared of heights would not enjoy this, but man were we wrong.  He loved it. The guide made everyone feel comfortable and even got us doing flips! It was awesome! We had so much fun zipling in Honduras!  I highly recommend booking a Zipline tour with the Anderson Company!

2. Roatan Snorkeling Excursions

Excursions Roatan Snorkel tour

Honduras has the best snorkeling I have ever experienced!  Before I went on our cruise I had several people tell me that they loved snorkeling in Honduras even more than Hawaii!

Seriously, I didn’t believe them at first but now I have to say that I agree! If you have read my blog, you know how much I love Hawaii!

The snorkeling in Honduras is unbelievable! I would 100% choose a Honduras snorkeling excursion unless I had little kids with me or those who are not strong swimmers.   This might be one of the best Roatan cruise excursions available!

What Types of Roatan Snorkeling Excursion Tours are Available?

I am going to list out a few options, please note that all of these tours are highly rated and each offers a different experience.

  • Roatan 3 Stop Snorkeling Adventure (5 out of 5 Stars)
  • Kayak Harbor Adventure and Reef Snorkel (5 out of 5 Stars)
  • Catamaran Tiki Snorkel (5 out of 5 Stars)
  • Private Yacht Snorkeling Adventure (5 out of 5 Stars)

Rating: All of these tours are 5-star! Tour Length :  All tours are around 3 hours.

Why choose these tours?   Like I said before, the snorkeling is amazing in Honduras.  All of these give you an option of transportation whether by car, kayak, or boat.

Some of these tours include beverages and snacks or even lunch.  You will have to determine what sounds the best to you and then see what is included in each individual Roatan snorkeling excursion.

Our Roatan Excursion Review

Hands down the Roatan snorkeling excursion is worth it. I like that there were a few options with a price range that will fit every budget, especially if you are traveling in a large group.

I have never seen coral as big as in Honduras. It actually is a part of the second-largest barrier reef in the World. There is so much, which makes it an awesome habitat for colorful fish. I highly recommend a Roatan Cruise excursion snorkeling

3. Private Island Tours

Roatan Cruise Excursions - Private Island

There are private islands or keys all around the main island of Roatan.  Some cruise lines actually have private islands that you can enjoy and book directly through the cruise line.  This is a more expensive option for a Honduras shore excursion.

Through Royal Caribbean, we booked Maya Key which is a private island key Roatan cruise excursion. On other cruise lines, you can book Little French Key.  Little French Key was hands down my father-in-law’s favorite Roatan cruise excursion ever!

But you can save money and book a private island tour through Viator on Private Fantasy Island Beach.

All of these are great options.  Do a little price comparison and see what works for you.

Rating : 5 out of 5 stars  Tour Length:  5 hours

Why choose this tour? If you just want to relax Maya Key, Little French Key, or Fantasy Island Beach are the perfect place.  They offer an all-inclusive island experience that includes lunch. The beach is nice and it is a great place to swim and snorkel.

Our Roatan Cruise Excursion Review

We loved going to Maya Key,  The snorkeling was out of this world.  You could bring your own gear but you did have to purchase a life vest to participate.

We walked all around Maya Key.  There is an animal sanctuary, a pool, a nice beach, ancient ruins, and a gift shop on the key.  It is a great place to relax and enjoy Honduras.

4. Monkey and Sloth Tours

Roatan Excursions - Monkey/Sloth tours

Almost all the Honduras cruise shore excursions offer an animal experience.

There are monkeys, sloths, and lots of other exotic animals all over the island of Roatan. Everyone in our group of 22 had an opportunity for an animal encounter.

I enjoyed seeing all the animals but this is more of an “add-on to another tour” option however, you can book an animal encounter singular.

Rating: 5 Stars  Tour Length: 2.5 to 6 depending on your tour.

Why choose these tours?  If you are an animal lover and want to see some exotic animals this is for you.  There are animal encounters included with almost all Roatan cruise excursions.

What Types of Animal Encounters Roatan Cruise Excursions Are Available?

  • Daniel Johnson Monkey and Sloth Sanctuary
  • Roatan Cruise Excursion Monkeys, Sloth and Snorkel Adventure (5 out of 5 Stars)
  • Roatan Excursions: Zipline and Monkeys (5 out of 5 Stars)
  • Private Island Tour and Monkeys
  • Gumbalimba Preservation

I loved walking around and looking at all the animals.  Some animal encounters will let you hold the animals.  I did not want to, I was happy to watch them play in their cages.

There were lots of other animals besides monkeys at the location we went to.  This is a must-do in Honduras!

5. Beach Excursion

Excursions in Roatan Honduras - Beach

Some beaches are better than others in Honduras.

We went to West Bay Taybana Beach.  We knew going into our trip that this beach was going to be very crowded with lots of locals selling products.  It was also dirty!  It isn’t the best beach but it was included on the zip line Roatan cruise excursion we booked.

If you are going to book one of the Honduras shore excursions to the beach just be aware that West Bay Taybana Beach might not live up to your expectations!

What do Roatan Beach Excursions Include?

  • Transportation
  • Beach Chairs
  • Beach Umbrellas

I am going to recommend some of the best Roatan shore excursions for the beach below.  My parents are avid cruisers so they have done pretty much every Honduras excursion.  These are their recommendations.

Rating: 4.5 out of 5 Tour Length: 3 to 8 hours – these Roatan cruise excursions are flexible. You can stay as little of as long as your want.

Why Choose a Roatan beach excursion?  The beach for the most part is a great place to relax and enjoy the beautiful weather and ocean.  If your kids want to build a sand castle or if you want to swim in the ocean a beach day is perfect!

What Types of Beach Excursions Are Available?

  • Beach Day Pass (Choose your Beach)
  • Roatan Beach Beach at Infinity Resort

6. ATV Roatan Shore Excursions

Best Roatan Cruise Excursions - ATV

How does riding ATVs through the jungle sound?  Pretty cool huh! Honduras may be the most affordable location I have ever seen to do this type of tour.

A lot of the ATV Honduras tours include not only an ATV ride but also another activity.  One thing I found is that if you book an ATV Honduras Tour you can get access to Mahagony Bay even if you did not arrive on Carnival, Princess, or Holland America.

What Does an ATV Tour Include?

  • Safety Gear

There are a few tours I will recommend.  Most of them will include other Honduras activities as well.

Rating: 4.5 and 5 out of 5 Tour Length: 1 to 6 hours

Why Choose an ATV Honduras Tour? This is an adventure! Riding ATVs through the jungle is pretty cool.  There are paths all over the island.

We own a few ATVs so we know how fun they are.  If you have never done anything like it before you are going to love it!

What Type of ATV Roatan Cruise Excursions are There?

  • ATV, Zip-Line, Sloth, and Beach Tour
  • ATV and Beach Time
  • ATV and Beach (Cheaper Option)

7. Chocolate and Rum Factory Tour

Roatan Excursion - Chocolate Factory

Chocolate? Rum? Honduras has it all. Actually, you can book a Honduras tour of a few factories.

My father-in-law jumped on this opportunity and had a fantastic time.  On the West End of the Island of Roatan are two factories to tour. You can also take a chocolate-making class.

Rating: 5 out of 5 Tour Length: 3-5 hours

Why Choose This Tour?  If you love chocolate or rum this is a great option.  This is a great tour if zip lining is not calling your name and hanging out at the beach is not very high on your list.  Although you will have the option on this Roatan cruise excursion.

Type of Food Roatan Shore Excursions Are Available?

  • Chocolate Making Class
  • Beach, Chocolate and Rum Tour
  • West Side Roatan Tour with Chocolate Factory

8. Roatan Horseback Riding Tour

Shore Excursions Roatan - horseback riding

Horseback riding on the beach?  I think YES!

If you want to have access to Mahagony Bay you can book a horseback ride on the bay.   They will pick you up from the Town Center (Coxen Hole) Port.

This is the most beautiful part of the island so you are in for a treat!

Rating: 4.5 -5 out of 5 Tour Length: 1-5 hours depending on the tour.

Why Choose This Tour?   I love horseback riding! The prices in Honduras are a lot lower than in the US for horseback riding.  Riding on the beach sounds magical.  I am sold! Next time this will be on my list!

Type of Horseback Riding Honduras Tours

  • Horseback Ride on Mahogany Bay
  • Horseback Ride, Sloth, Beach
  • Horseback Ride in Roatan

9. Catamaran or Boat Rides

Roatan Port Cruise Excursions

You can not go wrong with a Catamaran Honduras cruise excursion. Like, I said earlier Honduras is near the second-largest barrier reef in the World making it a perfect place to explore.

Jumping on a boat and exploring what is under the water is a great idea.  A lot of these Roatan excursions come with food and drinks.  Hanging out on the catamaran is pretty fun!

Rating: 4.5 and 5 out of 5 Tour Length: 3 hours

Why Choose This Roatan Cruise Excursion? You can not go wrong with this option! Exploring the island from the sea is a great way to relax and enjoy your time in Honduras.

Best Excursions in Roatan for Catamarans

  • Catamaran Snorkel Adventure
  • Catamaran Party Boat
  • Catamaran for Cruisers

10. Scuba Roatan Shore Excursions

Honduras tours Scuba Dive

I know my family was so excited to scuba dive when we booked our cruise.  Royal Caribbean offers PADI certification onboard so when you arrive at the port you can be ready to go scuba dive.

There are lots of levels and options for Roatan cruise excursions for scuba diving in Honduras.

What is Included in a Scuba Diving Roatan Cruise Port Excursion?

  • Diving Equipment

Rating:  5 out of 5 stars Tour Length: 3-4 hours

Why Choose this Scuba Diving Honduras Tour?   Roatan has the best diving in all of Honduras.  There are shipwrecks, coral gardens, and sand flats, and sharks.

It is a perfect place to scuba dive and explore the ocean!

What Scuba Diving Honduras Tours are Available?

  • Beginner Scuba Certification and Dive
  • Certified Divers Cruise Excursion
  • Refresher Scuba Dive Course

virgin voyages roatan excursions

Welcome to Roatan cruise port, Honduras!

Nestled 60 km/30 miles off the north coast of Honduras, Roatan (Isla Roatan) is the largest of the Bay Islands, an archipelago that consists of three islands including Guanaja and Utila. The island is part of the world’s second-largest barrier reef system (after the Australian Great Barrier Reef) and is famous for its incredible diving and snorkeling options.

In addition, Roatan features breathtaking sandy beaches, a rich cultural heritage and plenty of options for animal and nature lovers. In this Roatan cruise travel guide, read about:

Roatan Cruise Port

The island of Roatan has two cruise ports – Mahogany Bay and Coxen Hole, each used by different cruise companies. Both are located on the southwestern coast of the island, approximately 8 km/5 miles (a 15-minute drive) from one another.

1. Mahogany Bay Cruise Terminal

is the largest and newest of the two cruise ports. Opened in 2009, the terminal is managed by the Carnival Corporation and exclusively used by Carnival Cruise Line and Princess Cruises cruise ships. The terminal covers an area of 20 acres and has two berths that can accommodate up to 2 cruise vessels at a time. Some of the main features and attractions of Mahogany Bay cruise port include:

  • Tourist information office
  • Taxi stand, rent-a-car & tour booths
  • Bus & shore excursions hub
  • Roatan Heritage Exhibits
  • Magical Flying Beach Chair to Mahogany Beach (a new chair lift system that takes cruise ship guests from the welcome center to Mahogany Beach).
  • Walkway to Mahogany Beach, which is located a 10-minute walk from the terminal
  • Craft Market
  • Retail and duty-free shops (Santos Jewelers, Silver Sun Roatan, Del Sol, Diamonds International Watch & Design, Tanzanite International, Pirana Joe, Dufry, Flip Flops & What Nots, Tribal Fusion, Sea Goddess, Merendon Jewelers, and others)
  • Restaurants & cafes (Espresso Americano Coffee Shop, Fat Tuesday’s Monkey Hill, Crazy Ice Gelateria)

2. Coxen Hole Cruise Terminal

Also known as the Port of Roatan, this is the smaller of the two terminals and was named after the pirate John Coxen. This terminal serves Royal Caribbean, Celebrity Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line and Virgin Voyages cruise ships.

It is located in Coxen Hole, the capital of Roatan and the Bay Islands. The terminal covers an area of approx. 6.5 acres and can accommodate up to three cruise ships at a time (1 ship can dock, while two more ships can anchor). Coxen Hole cruise terminal is also referred to as “el pueblo” (the town) by the locals, as it’s located at the town center. Some of the main features include:

  • Car rental & tour booths
  • ATM and post office
  • Internet access
  • A small shopping mall, duty-free shops, liquor store, artisan gifts and authentic souvenirs
  • Restaurants & bars
  • Supermarket
  • Cultural exhibitions (Garifuna Punta dancing)
  • Live Cigar Rolling
  • Jungle Top Zipline – the longest zipline in Roatan is adjacent to the terminal

Getting Around Port Roatan

  • Both cruise port areas are flat and suitable for people with walking difficulties/wheelchair users.
  • Taxis have officially approved rates for various destinations across the island and they vary based on the number of passengers. Make sure you confirm the price with the taxi driver in advance.
  • The currency in Roatan is the Honduran Lempira (HNL). 1 USD equals 24.70 HNL. Credit cards and US dollars are widely accepted.
  • Roatan island is narrow, approximately 77 km/48 miles long and less than 8 km/5 miles across at its widest point. The western part of the island is more populated, while the eastern is more remote and isolated.
  • The official language is Spanish, however, English is widely spoken in touristy areas.
  • Locals and local vendors may be pushy when trying to sell their services. Keep an eye on your belongings at all times.
  • Besides cruise port areas, popular shopping locations include Megaplaza Mall Roatan, West Bay Mall, and Macaw Container Market.
  • Roatan sits outside of the hurricane belt and the weather is warm and pleasant all year round. The rainy season lasts between October and January, with heavy rainfalls in November and December. The dry season starts in February and lasts until August.
  • Juan Manuel Gálvez International Airport is the only airport in Roatan. It is located 5.5 km/3.4 miles (a 10-minute drive) from Mahogany Bay cruise terminal, and only 2 km/1.2 miles (a 5-minute drive) from Coxen Hole cruise terminal.

Little French Key is one of the top-rated shore excursions and the transportation to and from Little French Key is via tour boats. The ride takes about 15 min from Mahogany Bay and 35 min from Coxen Hole.

3.4. Camp Bay Beach

This quiet beach in a remote setting is the largest natural beach on all the Bay Islands and is located on Roatan’s northern shore. The palm tree-lined beach features crystal clear turquoise water, and Camp Bay Beach Adventure Lodge, a small beachfront resort and restaurant where you can rest and get something to eat.

Punta Gorda is the oldest settlement on Roatan and the first Garifuna settlement in the Americas. Today, the community works to preserve its culture, heritage, language, and history.

On Sundays, the village celebration features traditional drumming, dancing, and an opportunity to try delicious and authentic dishes such as Machuca (a rich seafood soup made with coconut milk and served with plantains). The village is full of high energy as tourists and locals participate in the weekly celebration.

The four most incredible things to do in Roatán.

Roatán: the small honduran island where big underwater adventure awaits..

The Arubas, Bahamas, and Virgin Islands of the world comprise a mere fraction of the Caribbean’s 700+ islands, but they seem to garner most of the attention. Sure, you can go on an epic ATV adventure in Aruba and party like a rockstar at the Beach Club at Bimini in the Bahamas, but there are other less-ubiquitous-on-social-media Caribbean islands equally worthy of the spotlight.

Roatán , an island off the coast of Honduras in Central America, is one of the most underrated and overlooked islands in the Caribbean. Situated between the islands of Utila and Guanaja, Roatán is surrounded by the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef – the largest barrier reef in the northern hemisphere – and known for its scuba diving, tropical and moderate climate, and coral reef brimming with marine life. Since the waters of Roatán are a mix of open and sheltered water, they’re perfect for snorkeling and scuba diving.

But it’s not all about the water. The West End is a small village in northwest Roatán, famous for its nightlife, restaurants, and beaches. Exuding a classic island village vibe, the West End is the perfect place to immerse yourself in local culture, as well as the perfect base for all your water adventures. The nearby Half Moon Bay and West Bay Beach not only have powdery-soft sand and stunning sunsets, but easy access to the reef for those with no time to waste dipping their feet in tropical waters.

Some travelers might be sleeping on Roatán, but we’re certainly not. That’s why we offer a range of Roatán excursions designed to expose Sailors to the very best of this little island.

Snorkel through a shipwreck coral reefs

When we say Roatán is a snorkeler’s paradise, we mean it. The island’s location right on the Mesoamerican Reef means the waters around Roatán are teeming with marine life, which is why snorkeling and scuba diving are the best things to do in Roatán. On our Starfish, Shipwreck, & Coral Reef Snorkel Shore Thing, you'll have the opportunity to snorkel shallow-water sites known for their large starfish populations. You’ll also visit a shipwreck (buried treasure not guaranteed), and cap off the stay with a beach break for snacks and relaxation.

Chill at a beach club

If you’re in the mood for a more laid back snorkel experience, the Sol y Mar Beach Club & Snorkel is one of our most popular Roatán excursions. Spend the day kicking back at the Sol y Mar Beach Club, a private paradise that doesn’t require any physical exertion whatsoever – unless you want it. Think hammocks, umbrellas, loungers, thatched-roof palapas, food, and drinks. If you feel like being a little adventurous, a guided snorkel trip is also included. You’ll swim along a nearby shallow reef, getting a glimpse of the island’s local aquatic inhabitants. And when you’re ready to hit the palapa again, it’ll be there waiting for you.

Zip-line through the jungle

Adventure in Roatán isn’t limited to aquatic excursions. The Extreme Adventure Park is one of the most fun things to do in Roatán, and it’s all about the jungle. Our Extreme Adventure Trio excursion gives Sailors the chance to tap to get wild in the Roatán jungle, soaring through the treetops on an 11-line zip-line, crossing one of eight suspension bridges over the leafy canopies, and braving the Zuperman Zip – a blazing fast zip-line suitable only for the truly daring. Calling this Shore Thing “extreme” isn’t overselling it. The Extreme Adventure Park truly isn’t for the faint of heart, but the adrenaline-pumping thrill is totally worth the jitters you’ll get standing on that zip-line platform. And once you’re done, you’ll have really earned that dip in the hot tub back on the ship.

Be a VIP in overwater bungalows

Discovering shipwrecks, exploring coral reefs, and swinging through the trees is great, but you’re on vacation to relax. Some people are living their best lives when their blood is pumping and their heart is racing, but others are simply looking to exhale and unwind. For those Sailors, our VIP Overwater Bungalow on Turquoise Bay will hit the spot. Spend the day relaxing in your own private, overwater bungalow, indulging in chilled champagne and lunch – all facilitated by a private butler service. A double day bed will be your throne for the day, and the only reason to leave it is when you feel like cooling off with an ocean dip. Be warned, though, this 5-hour Shore Thing goes by fast, so make the most of every last tranquil moment.

You can experience these and other things to do in Roatán on our Western Caribbean Charm voyage, a 6-night trip from Miami hitting Roatán, Costa Maya, and the Bahamas.

I can't find which port the Valiant Lady docks at in Roatan in November. I'd like to book an excursion but it's asking to specify which of the 2 ports to pick up from? TIA

This site should be able to tell you which port (if there is a choice)

If you go to the Port of Roatan's web page, you'll see entries for Valiant Lady in their schedule.  We made arrangements for our tour to pick us up there.

I'd guess Coxen Hole. Mahogany Bay is only for Carnival Corp lines.

It just has a general listing but if Carnival have exclusive rights on Mahogany Bay then that's answered my question. Thanks @1025cruise

We docked in Mahogany Bay on the MSC MERAVIGLIA so sometimes other cruise lines do use it.  I loved the port.  It's one development Carnival did an excellent job on.

The 6 Best Adults-Only Cruises to Take in 2024

W hether you have kids or grandkids, nieces or nephews, or not, whether you love kids or don't, sometimes there is something very appealing about the idea of a relaxing cruise vacation minus the youngsters. That's where adults-only cruises come in.

Back in the late 1990s when Torstein Hagen created Viking River Cruises , now by far Europe's largest river cruise operator, it was purposely designed for adults with no kids allowed aboard . That philosophy stands as the company has moved into ocean cruises and expedition ships .

Likewise, when British billionaire Richard Branson launched the first ship of his Virgin Voyages cruise brand three years ago, it was with no one under age 18 allowed aboard. The cruise line later riffed on the subject with ads showing kids very displeased that they couldn't get in on the fun with grown-ups.

No other major cruise lines outright ban the under-18 set, but there are ways travelers can lessen the chances there will be many or any children on their cruise.

If you really want to avoid kids, don't cruise during a school break period (such as spring break, summer, or winter holidays), pick an itinerary for more than two weeks (length being a deterrent to the family crowd- world cruise , anyone?), or look toward an ultra-luxurious cruise or one that involves an expensive airfare-not everyone wants to splurge on an upscale experience for their progeny.

Also keep in mind the smaller the ship-and fewer experiences for kids (such as kids clubs and big water slides)-the greater the chance youngsters won't be aboard. Here are our picks for the best cruises for adults.

Whether you cruise with Viking on one of the company's many 190-passenger river cruise vessels in Europe, on the line's 930-passenger ocean cruise ships that sail around the world, or on one of its two 378-passenger expedition ships, you'll be treated to a fine-tuned cruising experience geared strictly to adults. You need to be age 18 and up to get aboard to enjoy the many perks covered in the all-inclusive fares. Those perks consist of shore excursions in every port, free wine and beer, all meals (including numerous restaurant experiences and nightly seafood buffets), engaging lectures hosted by historians and other experts, and Nordic spas complete with hot sauna, steam room, and a chilly snow grotto.

To book: Viking's 15-day Grand European Tour sails from Amsterdam to Budapest on the Rhine, Main, and Danube rivers, starting from $4,999 per person.

Virgin Voyages

Adult-only cruises offered by Virgin Voyages take place on four 2,770-passenger ships that sail the Caribbean, Europe, and the South Pacific. The atmosphere aboard is edgy, cheeky, full of subtle-and not so subtle-sexual innuendo, and fun done in an inclusive, adult way unlike anything the cruise industry has ever seen before . Expect lots of day drinking, lively nighttime parties and entertainment, a tattoo parlor, and indulgent food, including an over-the-top molecular dining experience and the "Lick Me Till . . . Ice Cream" shop (for no extra charge)-in between trips to the wellness retreat with a mud room and '80s-style aerobics classes for the full detox and retox Virgin experience.

To book: Virgin's 4-night Fire & Sunset Soirées sailing , embarks Miami for Key West and then Virgin's private Beach Club at Bimini in the Bahamas, from $1,564 for two.

Azamara Cruises

This upscale line with four small ships does not restrict kids but tends to attract well-traveled couples aged 50 and up who like the idea of seeing the world from the vantage point of a floating boutique hotel. The atmosphere on Azamara sailings is both convivial and sophisticated, on ships that carry a maximum of 704 guests. The vessels feature a library with a faux fireplace, an upscale steakhouse for an elevated dining experience, and a "living room" for drinking and socializing.

Itineraries focus on maximizing time in port, with cultural immersion, including small group shore excursions and "AzAmazing" experiences where, for instance, you and other guests might be treated to a complimentary private acrobatics show in Monaco. Special golf cruises with PerryGolf include play at such prestigious courses as Ireland's Royal Portrush.

To book: Sail on the 690-passenger Azamara Journey for a 10-night Croatia Intensive Voyage , from $2,219 per person.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises

With a fleet of 490- to 750-passenger ships, Regent Seven Seas Cruises is one of the most expensive cruise lines out there and touts that it is "the world's most luxurious cruise line"-a status it gets by, for instance, outfitting its latest ships with Carrara marble details, crystal chandeliers, over-the-top suites, and multi-million-dollar art collections. Fares include a broad choice of shore excursions such as a mud bath experience in Lautoka, Fiji, premium wine and spirits, and business-class international airfare. While the line does not ban kids-and in fact, encourages families at holidays and on summer cruises in Alaska-not everyone wants to pay top dollar for experiences that may go over kids' heads.

To book: An 11-night trip from Miami to the Caribbean on the 496-passenger Seven Seas Navigator starts at $5,699 for two passengers.

Silversea Cruises

With its sleek ships, a focus on cuisine and drink as a cultural experience, butlers that pamper all guests, and an overall ultra-luxury ambience, Silversea is a favorite of well-heeled adult travelers. Grandparents may bring a multigenerational group aboard for a holiday or summertime sailing (the 596-passenger Silver Muse is the only Silversea ship with a children's playroom), but with air-inclusive fares that start at around $800 a day, and no discounts for kids, you're unlikely to have your pool time interrupted by shouts of "Marco Polo." Rather, you're more likely to hear someone call an attendant over for more champagne and a side of caviar, both complimentary and available 24/7.

To book: A 10-night sailing from Civitavecchia (Rome) to Barcelona on the 596-passenger Silver Moon , is priced from $7,600 per person.

Windstar guarantees there won't be young kids aboard-you must be age eight or up to sail. That said, it's rare to see any kids at all. The upscale line's 148- to 342-passenger ships deliver an intimate, adult atmosphere whether you are on a four- or five-masted ship with billowing sails or an all-suite motorized yacht. Cabins and suites are mostly designed for two and attract couples looking for romance at sea, in addition to excellent dining, enhanced by the line's status as the official cruise line of the James Beard Foundation. Borrow a kayak from your ship's own marina by day and cap an evening of food and drink with quiet time out on deck, watching the moon reflect on the sea.

To book: The 7-day Dreams of Tahiti itinerary takes place on the 312-passenger sailing ship Star Breeze , with all-inclusive pricing starting from $3,399 per person.

This story was originally published in 2023 and was most recently updated on June 25, 2024, to include current information.

At the Virgin Voyages pools, you won't have to worry about kids splashing or spilling your adult beverage.

The Scarlet Lady is one the Virgin Voyages Lady Ships.

Passengers on the same ship can enjoy a cruise full of adventurous activities and late nights while others choose a low-key, spa-focused trip with lots of down time with early bedtimes in peace and quiet. Virgin Voyages manages to create so many different simultaneous experiences. Here's what else you can expect on one of their cruises.

Virgin Voyages Ship Features And Amenities

Virgin Voyages operates a fleet of ships they call Lady Ships. That's a play on the term "your ladyship", which was chosen in part because it's a nod to England, and the company has a British heritage. The Lady Ships include Scarlet Lady, Valiant Lady, and Resilient Lady. Its fourth ship in the series, Brilliant Lady, is coming in 2025.

The Scarlet Lady is one of the three current Lady Ships.

Each ship is unique, yet they also include a lot of commonalities so you know what to expect when you book a cruise with them. All of their ships offer cabins and suites that utilize tech to make things easier on guests. For example, you can choose from a variety of lighting types for the mood, and there are large flat-screen HDTVs and mini bars.

Virgin Voyages cabins are spacious and designed for relaxation.

Virgin Voyages offers itineraries that empower guests to explore over 100 destinations. They host cruises to the Europe, North America, and many Caribbean destinations. A Western Caribbean Charm cruise takes guests to Costa Maya, Mexico, and Roatán, Honduras. Those are just a couple of the itineraries available.

This is a beach and port of Costa Maya in Mexico.

You can also. book a transatlantic ship if you love sea days and want to cross an ocean while enjoying the cruising life. These generally range from 14 to 16 nights, and they have specialty programming so each day feels fresh with new experiences.

Shore excursions on the Lady Ships are coordinated by Shore Things providers. Excursions are designed for many different ideas of an ideal vacation. Some excursions are spent entirely at luxury beach clubs. Other immerse cruisers in the local culture and include historical tours led by locals.

Onboard Activities And Entertainment

The entertainment on each Virgin Voyages ship might be different, but they all have some of the same venues. The Manor, a nightclub a sea that has two stories and three bars, is named after founder Richard Branson's first recording studio. It doubles as a spectacular entertainment venue with shows before transforming into a night club.

The onboard casino is a popular spot on each Virgin Voyages ship. It has a Sea Roller Rewards Program to reward frequent players, and it has over 100 slot machines for those who prefer to stick to those. Then there are also traditional casino games like Blackjack, Poker, and Roulette.

Loyalty And Referral Programs

If you love your Virgin Voyages sailing and want to get the best deal on future cruises, the best path is probably to take advantage of their loyalty program. It's aptly called the Virgin Voyages Sailing Club . Whether you take a trip to the Caribbean or Europe, it couldn't be easier to join because you're automatically enrolled after you take your first cruise with the company.

The more cruises you take with Virgin Voyages, the more perks you can get from the loyalty club. Some perks include things like specialty coffees, bar tab credit, exclusive onboard events, complimentary laundry services, and unlimited premium Wi-Fi. Full benefits and details are listen on the Virgin Voyages website .

Can you plan a special celebration on board a Virgin Voyages trip?

Yes, Virgin Voyages celebrations are carefully planned with great attention to detail. According to Virgin Voyages , you can book a special party-planning package when you make your reservation. Celebrations that can be handled include birthdays, anniversaries, babymoons, friendship trips, retirement celebrations, bachelorette parties, and more.

A bottomless brunch event at either The Wake or Razzle Dazzle is a part of this package. They can create vegan menus and respect dietary restrictions, so the inclusive experience can be enjoyed to the fullest by all guests.

The dinner party is planned with beverages and desserts, and complimentary champagne is upgraded to Moët & Chandon. If you don't drink, you won't be missing out and will still be getting more than your money's worth. They've planned special things for those who don't drink alcohol. The non-alcoholic drinks include Heineken 0.0% and Noughty Sparkling Mimosa.
