Katra to Vaishno Devi on Foot :

The most popular way to reach Bhawan is by trekking on foot from Katra. The trek is around 13.5 km long, and it takes around 4-6 hours to reach Bhawan, depending on your fitness level. The trek is well-marked and well-lit, and there are several facilities such as restrooms, eateries, and medical aid centers along the way.

Katra to Vaishno Devi by Ponies or Horses :

You can also hire a pony or a horse to reach Bhawan from Katra. The cost of hiring a pony or a horse depends on the season and the demand. The journey takes around 4-5 hours, and it is a popular option for those who are unable to trek on foot.

Katra to Vaishno Devi by Helicopter :

You can also take a helicopter from Katra to Sanjichhat, which is located near Bhawan. The helicopter service is operated by the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board, and it takes around 8 minutes to reach Sanjichhat. From Sanjichhat, you can trek to Bhawan or take a pony or a horse.

Note that due to weather conditions and demand, the availability of the helicopter service may vary, and it is recommended to book your tickets in advance.

1. Darshani Darwaaza (Starting Point)

The point known as Darshani Deodhi or Darshani Darwaza, around 1 km away from the bus stand, serves as the entrance to the track. According to legend, it was at this spot where Mata Vaishno Devi appeared as a young girl and met Pandit Shridhar.

This location is also called Darshani Darwaza as it offers a complete view of the Trikuta mountain. The term “Darshan” means view, and therefore, symbolically, this marks the first view of the Yatra. The elevation of this spot is 2800 feet above sea level.

2. (i) Holy Track: Old Track (Main)

The track leading up to the Shrine was in poor condition prior to August 30th, 1986, when the management was taken over by the Board. It was filled with potholes, and loosely-laid stones, and had an uneven surface. However, after the Board took over, the entire track was reconstructed.

It was widened, paved with tiles, and made much smoother. In addition, the steep inclines were made more gentle in several places. For safety, many parapets were built, and railings were installed along the track. Furthermore, over 5 kilometers of the track have been covered with rain shelters to protect the pilgrims from unpredictable weather conditions.

Previously, there was a lack of illumination along the track leading to the Shrine. However, with the installation of more than 1200 High-Pressure Sodium Vapor Lamps, the entire path now glitters with light.

Additionally, to ensure that visiting devotees have access to potable water, 120 water points and about 20 water coolers have been installed along the route from Banganga to Bhawan. Before the management takeover, there were inadequate sanitary arrangements along the track.

However, now, approximately 600 modern flushing latrine seats have been provided along the track and at Bhawan.

2 (ii) Holy Track: New Track (Alternate)

To address the growing number of pilgrims and the inconvenience caused by the movement of ponies, a new track was constructed in the early 1990s. The sharp gradient at Hathimatha and the congested width of the old track necessitated this construction.

The new track, known as the alternate track, has a much more gradual gradient and was opened to the public in 1999. Unlike the old track, no ponies are permitted on the new track. This shorter and gentler track has received widespread appreciation from pilgrims.

The alternate track, which is 500 meters shorter than the old track, begins just below Adhkuwari near the Inderprastha viewpoint and ends just short of the Bhawan Complex.

The track is wider than the old one and easier to navigate due to its uniform climb and lower gradient. Along the way, there are two viewpoints, three refreshment units, drinking water points, and water coolers for the convenience of the pilgrims.

Additionally, several outlets serving tea, coffee, and soft drinks have been established, as well as a Dosa point at Himkoti Viewpoint. Toilet blocks have also been constructed to provide clean public utilities, and adequate shelter sheds are available.

To reduce pollution, a zero-emission battery vehicle runs along this track.

The Shrine provides a battery vehicle facility for infirm, sick, and handicapped devotees at Inderprasth (Adhkuwari) and Manokmana Bhawan. However, booking of the facility is subject to availability.

3. Ban Ganga

Beyond the Police Check Post and Yatra Parchi Check Post, pilgrims arrive at a small bridge that spans Banganga, a legendary river associated with the miracles and legends of Mata.

The river flows throughout the year, except during periods of acute rainfall or snowfall shortages in the monsoon and winter seasons, respectively.

It is considered sacred, and in keeping with Hindu tradition, many devotees like to take a bath in it before continuing on their journey. However, in modern times, many pilgrims choose to skip this traditional bath.

Nonetheless, those who have the time or are inclined to follow the legends and traditions may choose to take a dip in the river. There are a couple of Ghats constructed for this purpose, with the first one being typically very crowded and the other being comparatively more spacious.

The river flowing under the small bridge, which is considered sacred by the pilgrims, is known as Banganga. The name is derived from two words, “Ban” which means arrow, and “Ganga” which refers to the sacred river Ganges.

According to legends, while on her way to the Holy Cave, Mata Vaishno Devi created this water body with an arrow from her quiver, giving it the name Banganga. It is also believed that she had taken a dip in it and washed her hair. Hence, some people refer to it as Bal Ganga, where “Bal” refers to hair in Hindi.

4. Charan Paduka

Charan Paduka is located at an altitude of 3380 feet, approximately 1.5 kilometers from Banganga. It is believed that the holy footprints of Mata are imprinted on a rock slab at this site.

Darshans at Charan Paduka are quick, taking only a few minutes on a normal day. Pilgrims pay their respects to the footprints of Mata engraved on the rock slab and continue their journey, symbolically touching Mata’s feet and seeking her blessings at the start of their pilgrimage.

A medical unit operated by the Shrine Board is also situated here. Equipped with all necessary medical facilities and attended by trained medical staff, it provides pilgrims with access to essential medical care.

5. Adhkuwari

Adkuwari is located at an altitude of 4800 feet and about 500 meters from Inderprastha. The fluttering flag and temple spires can be seen and announcements can be heard from the announcement booth much before reaching there.

Adkuwari is situated halfway on the track, approximately 6 km from Katra, and is an important Darshan on the visit, second only to the main Darshans at the Holy Cave.

The term Adkuwari is believed to have originated from Adi kumari, meaning “The Eternal Virgin”. According to legend, Vaishnavi, in the form of a small girl, disappeared from the Bhandaara organized by Pandit Shridhar and halted at Banganga and Charan Paduka.

She then reached Adkuwari, where she meditated and observed spiritual discipline (Tapasya) in a small womb-shaped cave for nine months. The exact spot where she meditated is located on the right-hand side of the cave and is also shaped like a womb.

This cave has become popular by the name of Garbh Joon, meaning the Womb, since Vaishnavi had observed spiritual discipline in a womb-shaped cave for nine months. It is believed that passing through this cave cleanses a devotee’s sins and purifies their soul.

During her meditation, when Vaishnavi realized that Bhairon Nath had approached the cave in search of her, she created an exit at the other end with her trident and proceeded toward the Holy Cave.

As the cave is very narrow, only one person can pass through it at a time. While the entrance is broad, as one enters further, it becomes a challenge to pass through.

However, with a prompt or a nudge from the person waiting behind, remembrance of Mata in the heart and on the lips, and crawl by crawl, one emerges from the cave, fully recharged with energy that belongs to another world.

Additionally, a medical unit of the Shrine Board is located at Adkuwari and is equipped with all necessary medical facilities attended by trained medical staff.

Located about 2.75 kilometers from Adkuwari on the new track, Himkoti is a scenic spot offering breathtaking views of the entire valley. While there is no traditional or religious significance attached to this point, its natural splendor and serene charm captivate pilgrims and visitors alike.

The Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board has developed a viewpoint, restaurant, and dosa counter at this location. Visitors can find packed and cooked food, hot and cold beverages, and essential items such as medicare and oxygen cylinders, and cassettes.

There is ample space to relax and enjoy the beauty of nature. Himkoti is being developed into something more than a viewpoint, with plans to add an artificial pond, a garden, and a meditation center.

7. Sanjichhat

Sanji Chhat, located two and a half kilometers away from the Holy Shrine of Vaishno Devi Ji, is a charming little plateau. This place serves as a welcome break for pilgrims, as the upward climb ends at this point and it also offers a picturesque view. Prior to the Shrine Board’s takeover in 1986, the conditions at Sanji Chhat were vastly different.

The area was cluttered with small, unsanitary kiosks and shopkeepers would discard their waste on the hillside, creating an unpleasant sight and odor. There were no proper arrangements for drinking water, except for Chhabils.

The Dharmarth Trust had constructed a Dharamshalla, but the accommodation was extremely inadequate, with almost non-existent toilet facilities.

Sanjhichhat underwent a significant transformation after the Shrine Board took over its management. The first step was a massive sanitation drive to clean up the hillside. The small, unsanitary kiosks were removed and relocated, while the main platform was reconstructed with white marble and Kota Stone, adorned with a fountain and floodlights.

New shopping complexes and toilet blocks were also erected, and the water supply was improved. To enhance medical facilities for pilgrims, a 24-bed hospital was established. Additionally, a new helipad was constructed to allow for the recent introduction of helicopter services between Katra and Sanjhichhat.

8. Bhairon Ghati

Prior to the takeover of the holy Shrine by the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board in the year 1986, the Bhairon Temple was ignored and the track leading to the temple was in a dilapidated condition, making the climb a grueling task.

However, after the takeover, significant emphasis was placed on developments in this area, particularly the widening and beautification of the track, remodeling of steps, and the construction of rain shelters and toilets.

Additionally, the entire track has been illuminated with High-Pressure Sodium Vapour Lamps and the water supply has been augmented. For the convenience of the pilgrims, toilet blocks have also been constructed and a refreshment unit named OM has been started to provide adequate and reasonably priced beverages and packed food items such as biscuits and snacks.

The Temple area has been beautified by fixing marble tiles and slabs along the pre-ambulation of the temple. As a result of these efforts, the visit of the pilgrims to the Bhairon temple is now much more convenient and memorable.

9. Vaishno Devi Darshan at Bhawan

The ultimate destination of the pilgrims, the Holy Bhawan houses the Sanctum Sanctorum – the Holy cave, where the Goddess has revealed herself in the form of Holy Pindies, manifesting Mata in her three forms Maha Kali, Maha Lakshmi, and Mata Saraswati.

Around 1.5 kilometers before reaching the Holy Bhawan, a pilgrim catches the first glimpse of it, which brings an upsurge of energy, and all the tiredness from the strenuous climb evaporates instantly, as if by some magic wand.

The relief of the last 1.5 kilometers being either level or gently sloping downwards eases the tired muscles. Filled with extra fervor and devotion, the yatra covers the last 1.5 kilometers on wings and reaches Bhawan in no time.

Legend has it that Vaishnavi, after leaving the Garbh Joon cave at Adhkawari where Bhairon Nath had located her, began climbing uphill until she reached the Holy Cave. Bhairon Nath, who was following her, found her again inside the cave and started to challenge her.

The Goddess then assumed her divine form and severed Bhairon Nath’s head with her sword. The blow was so powerful that Bhairon Nath’s head flew and landed on another spur of the mountain, about 1.5 kilometers away, which is now the site of the Bhairon Temple.

His torso remained at the mouth of the Holy Cave. The Goddess then immersed herself in deep meditation inside the Sanctum Sanctorum, where she is manifested in the petrified form, also known as the Holy Pindies, representing Mata in her three forms – Maha Kali, Maha Lakshmi, and Mata Saraswati.

The Holy Bhawan is the focal point of the pilgrimage and the most important location in the entire Yatra circuit. The Shrine Board has made extensive arrangements and facilities available for the convenience of the devotees.

These include both free and rented accommodation options, toilet blocks, Bhojanalayas, post offices, banks, communication centers offering STD/PCO services, announcement centers, blanket stores, cloakrooms, medical dispensaries (with an ICU), general stores, Bhaint shops, and a police station, among others.

Over 11 lakh pilgrims have made the trip to the Vaishno Devi Temple in 2024—and that’s just in less than half a year. The shrine, situated in a small cave within a shrine complex perched at a height of 5,200ft on the Trikuta mountain in Katra, draws pilgrims and curious tourists from around the country and the world. For those who visit, the trip is a fairly long one—either a 15km trek or, even if they opt for a helicopter ride, long lines and a fair bit of waiting. That means planning is key. Here’s a comprehensive guide to visiting the Vaishno Devi Temple, with all the essential details on how to get there, what to pack and when to go.

Best time to visit the Vaishno Devi temple

If you’re planning a trip to the Vaishno Devi temple, it’s best to optimise for good weather. The best time to visit Jammu is in the autumn and winter seasons, which last from October to March or April. The weather is pleasant during this time, with daytime temperatures not exceeding 30°C. That means plenty of sunshine and clear skies as you make the trek to the shrine. The temple is open 24x7, and many pilgrims choose to begin their trek at sunset to avoid the heat and crowds.

Monsoon lasts from July to September in Jammu and brings moderate to heavy rainfall to the region. It’s not advisable to visit the shrine during this time due to the constant downpours and chances of floods and landslides. Chaitra Navratri (March-April) and Sharad Navratri (September-October) tend to bring massive crowds to the shrine. During this time, the pathways leading up to the shrine tend to be choc-a-bloc with pilgrims, and getting to the top could take over a day or two, depending on the crowds.

How to get to Katra

By flight: If you’re travelling from Delhi, IndiGo, SpiceJet and Air India offer frequent non-stop flights between the two. If you’re flying from Mumbai, IndiGo is the main carrier. IndiGo and Air India offer 1-2 non-stop flights on all days except Wednesdays. If you can’t find one, your best bet is a flight with a layover in Delhi or Srinagar. If you’re in Srinagar, you can take a flight from Srinagar International Airport to Jammu Airport—the flight is just under an hour. Katra is about an hour’s drive from Jammu Airport. By train: Take a train to Jammu Railway Station and drive to Katra (1 hour 15 minutes), or take a train to Katra Railway Station, though connectivity is limited. By car: The main city of Jammu is about a five-hour drive from Srinagar.

How to get to the Vaishno Devi temple

You can undertake the trip to the Vaishno Devi temple in two ways—a 15km trek or a helicopter ride.

Trek to the Vaishno Devi temple

The trek up to the Vaishno Devi temple begins at the yatra starting point in Katra and lasts about 15km. Before beginning, you need to register for the yatra at the registration centre at Katra bus stand to get your RFID Yatra Access Card. Depending on your pace and the number of breaks you take, the trek could last between three-six hours. You can choose to walk up the entire way, or opt for a palki or pony ride up. Folks offer these rides at the starting point as well as at Sanji Chhat, and drop you right at the point where the lines for the shrine entrance begin. There are several shops and eateries along the way, selling prasad, snacks, cold drinks, water and more. The midpoint of the trek is named Adhkuwari, following which is a plateau called Sanji Chhat that many use as a resting point.

The trek features a moderate ascend, on a paved, sheltered pathway. If you’re walking up, make sure to keep an eye out for the palkis and ponies—they move pretty fast and you’re better off staying out of their way.

Take a helicopter to the Vaishno Devi temple

The helicopter ride takes you from the helipad in Katra all the way to Sanji Chhat, cutting down the hours-long trek to a quick 5-minute ride. After your drop-off at Sanji Chhat, you have about 2.5km to reach the shrine—you can walk up or opt for a pony/palki ride.

Two operators fly helicopters to and from the helipad—Global Vectra and Himalayan. Tickets need to be booked online well in advance—they sometimes sell out 2-3 months prior. The helicopters seat 4-5 people, along with the pilot. Bookings can only be made through the official website of the Vaishno Devi Shrine Board and a one-way ticket costs about Rs2,100. The helicopter ride is free for children below the age of two years. On the day of your booking, you will need to arrive at the helipad about 1.5 hours prior (you will be informed about what time to arrive once your booking is confirmed) to verify your booking and receive your physical ticket and RFID Yatra Access Card. Make sure to carry a valid government ID to verify your booking. Prepare for some amount of waiting at the helipad in case of logistical delays. The helipad waiting room has ample seating and washrooms. Once all formalities have been completed, a car will take you up to the main helipad, where you will board the helicopter. Photography is strictly prohibited during the ride, and the staff takes away your phones temporarily and returns them when you land. Liquids are allowed in your bag as long as each item is below 100ml and packed in transparent bags. The ride, though short, is scenic, with beautiful views of the Trikuta mountain, Katra and the snow-capped Himalayas in the distance.

How to get to the Bhairavnath Temple

About 2km uphill from the bhawan or main shrine complex is the Bhairavnath Temple. Many pilgrims make the second trek after their trip to the Vaishno Devi Temple. Though shorter than the first, the hour-long trek is steeper and therefore more challenging. This trek is not recommended for senior citizens and folks with limited mobility. Ponies are available for this trek too. Alternatively, you could book the five-minute cable car ride up. The aerial ropeway is operational from 9am to 5pm and needs to be booked online in advance. The ride is free for children under three; a one-way ride for adults costs about Rs100. The queue for the ropeway ride tends to be long, so get there before your allotted time slot and prepare for some amount of waiting.

What to pack

Carry a light backpack or handbag for your trip to the Vaishno Devi temple, with your phone, some cash, and a bottle of water. Jio and Vodafone users typically receive network coverage throughout the journey, however, remember that only postpaid SIM cards work in the area. Carry a cap and sunscreen, especially if you’re visiting during the summer months—the maximum temperature in Jammu this May is 41°C. Once you get to the shrine complex, you will need to deposit your bags and shoes in a locker—the queue for lockers tends to be pretty long—before you get in line to head to the main shrine, which is within a small cave. There’s also an area to shower here, for those who want to freshen up before heading to the shrine. Folks who have opted for a VIP darshan have separate locker facilities further along with no queues. There are several shops and eateries along the way—including a Domino’s outlet at the entry of the shrine complex that offers pizzas without any onion or garlic, so you don’t need to pack food for the trip.

Where to stay near the Vaishno Devi temple

There are a handful of hotels in Katra, including WelcomHotel by ITC Hotels - Katra ; Vivanta Katra, Vaishno Devi; Fortune Park, Katra by ITC; Ramada by Wyndham Katra Station Road, The White Hotel Katra; Holiday Inn Katra Vaishno Devi; and Lemon Tree Hotel Katra. The newest luxury hotel in Katra is Katra Marriott Resort & Spa , a 100-key property with beautiful views of Trikuta, about a 20-minute drive from the helipad.

The Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board offers free and paid accommodation at various points on the way to the shrine. The free accommodation consists of a number of halls available on a first-come-first-serve basis at Adhkuwari, Sanjichhat and Bhawan (near the main shrine). The paid accommodation includes dormitories, double rooms and suites at Adhkuwari, Sanjichhat and Bhawan, as well as in Katra and Jammu.

According to mythology, Mahayogi Guru Goraksh Nathji sent his disciple, Bhairavnath, a tantrik, to test if the goddess had attained a higher level of spirituality. Despite numerous pleas, when he did not listen, Mata revealed her Kali form (ferocious form) and beheaded him. His detached head fell forcefully at a distant hilltop. Reaching Vaishno Devi:

You can reach Vaishno Devi by train or flight from Delhi. There are direct trains to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra. Alternatively, you can take a flight from Delhi to Jammu, and from Jammu airport, you can find taxis to Vaishno Devi, Katra.

• From Jammu: Trains run from Jammu Rail Station to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra take 2 hours. Buses, both luxury and normal, operate every 15-20 minutes from Jammu Rail Station and Jammu Bus Stand to Vaishno Devi Katra. It’s a 50 km journey taking approximately 2 hours, and taxis are also available.
• Accommodation: Katra offers a range of public hotels and lodging facilities provided by the Shrine Board, catering to different budget ranges.
• After reaching Katra, take some rest, explore the local market, and enjoy dinner before a good night’s sleep in preparation for the trek.

First, register or book Yatra Parchi from the free booking counter near Katra bus stand if online registration is not done. Depending on your preferences, fitness level, and time, you can reach the main Bhawan by hiking, using palanquins, hiring porters, opting for ponies, or taking a helicopter.

Itinerary for Trek:

• After reaching ArdhKuwari, get your advanced ticket to visit the cave. It’s advisable to check the ticket number for the return time due to potential long waiting times. Take a rest before proceeding to the main Bhawan.
• Upon reaching the main Bhawan, you can purchase items like chunri, sarees, dry fruits (excluding coconut), and flowers. After a bath and storing belongings in lockers, stand in the queue for holy visits or Darshan, chanting “Jai Mata Di.”
• After the visit, follow the crowd to exit the temple, collect prasad, and a lucky coin of Devi Mata. Spend some time at the location, grab a meal, and rest before proceeding to Bhairavnath Temple.

• Summer, autumn, and the New Year vacation period experience peak rush.

Monsoon can be enjoyable due to waterfalls and lush green surroundings. Where winter brings the advantage of the opening of the original holy cave for Darshans, offering a unique mystical experience.

In summer, temperatures range from a maximum of 30°C to a minimum of 15°C at Bhawan. Normal summer clothing is sufficient; however, based on my experience, I suggest opting for a night hike. The weather is pleasant, and there is less crowd at night.

In winter, temperatures range from a maximum of 14°C to a minimum of 4°C. Normal winter clothing is suitable during the hike, while multiple layers of winter clothing are needed at Bhawan.

Here are some important reminders for your trip to Vaishno Devi Yatra:

• Vaishno Devi Yatra is a moderate trek of 13 km distance with an elevation of 5200 ft.
• Free registration or Yatra Parchi booking is conducted near the Bus Stand in Katra or can be done online. A photo ID proof is required.
• Carrying a minimal amount of luggage and clothing without additional food and water is advisable during the trek, as all necessary facilities are available along the way and at Bhawan.
• Phones, cameras, shoes, belts, wallets, and other accessories are not allowed during the visit but can be stored in the clock room.
• Tobacco and alcohol are strictly prohibited , and only vegetarian food is available in the vicinity.
• Bathing facilities are available at the main Bhawan.

How to reach Vaishno Devi Bhawan from Katra?

There are two ways to travel from Katra to Maa Vaishno Devi Bhawan – by road and by air. Devotees can also hire ponies, palki, electric vehicles, and helicopters. Let’s see each in detail –

By Road (Holy track) –

By pony/ palki-.

From Katra, pilgrims can hire a pony/ horse and palki/ palanquin from Darshani Darwaza – the starting point of the holy sojourn till Ardhkuwari or Bhawan. They can take a night halt at Ardhkuwari if required. Ardhkuwari is halfway through the holy Yatra, just 6 km from the base.

By Trekking –

Devotees who wish to walk till Bhawan can choose from three paths –

• An old track that starts from Darshani Darwaza and covers Ban Ganga, Charan Paduka, Ardhkuwari, Himkoti, and Sanjichhat.
• The second route also starts from Darshani Darwaza and covers Ban Ganga and Charan Paduka; starting just below Ardhkuwari near Indraprastha viewpoint. It is short by 500 than the old route, where ponies are not allowed. This track is much wider and gentler than other tracks.
• The third track is the newest, which starts from Tarakote, and doesn’t allow ponies and palkis. With a comfortable gradient and sideway amenities, this route has a ramp-type design and offers scenic views. Tarakote Marg is also linked with the Banganga-Ardhkuwari track, which takes off near Gulshan Langar. This is a 1.5 km link route that provides the choice to Yatris to choose between the Banganga-Ardhkuwari route or the purely pedestrian Tarakote Marg.

By Helicopter –

Devotees can embark on  Vaishno Devi Yatra by helicopter , starting from Katra. The flight will drop you at Sanjichhat, just 2.5 km from the holy cave. The facility of  online helicopter booking  is available on the Shrine Board’s official website. Advance booking can be done 60 days before the journey. Passengers must carry valid ID proof, address proof, and debit/credit card with which payment has been made. In the absence of any of the documents, boarding can be denied.

Pilgrims can also book the ticket offline.  Katra to Sanjichhat helicopter tickets  can also be booked from the Current-heli ticket counter, where the passengers’ valid ID proof and travel documents should be presented. Offline ticket booking is subject to the availability of seats.

One-way or two-way  helicopter tickets  can be booked from the website.  Vaishno Devi Yatra  helicopter booking is also available for Katra-Sanjichhat-Katra. To and fro helicopter ticket is also considered a VIP Pass for Darshan. However, a one-way ticket from Katra-Sanjichhat or Sanjichhat-Katra is not considered a VIP Pass.

Availability of Yatra Registration Counter

The registration for Yatra is mandatory, and without a Yatra slip, pilgrims are not allowed to start their journey. Yatra registration can be done in two modes – online and offline.

Vaishno Devi’s online booking  is free and can be done on the official website of the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board. Take the printout of the Yatra Slip as it is compulsory to carry the printout of the registration slip during the holy journey.

Offline registration can be done from the registration counter in the main market of Katra. In addition, the starting point of Tarakote Marg also has a counter from where you can register on the spot.

What to do after Darshan of Maa Vaishno Devi?

Upon reaching Bhawan, take a holy bath at the bathing ghat before heading towards the Bhawan for darshan. Seek blessing at the holy cave. After Darshan at Maa Vaishno Devi Bhawan, head towards Bhairon Ghati.

Bhairon Temple is situated 1.5 km from Bhawan at an altitude of 6,600 feet above sea level. It is believed that it is a must to visit Bhairon Temple after Maa Vaishno Devi darshan , without which the Yatra will be incomplete.

How to travel from Vaishno Devi Bhawan to Bhairon Ghati?

Bhairon ghat is visited by two routes – ropeway and track..

By Track: Devotees can cover the distance on foot. They can also hire a pony/ horse or palki/ palanquin. The distance from Bhawan to Bhairon Valley is not much but the ascent is steep, which makes the hike tough.

By Ropeway: Cable car ride from Bhawan to Bhairon Baba reduces the hour-long tiring journey into a 3-minutes joyride. Vaishno Devi Ropeway service is operational only during day time.

The temple of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi is situated at the Trikuta Parvat which is located in a small city called Katra located in the State of Jammu. One can reach Katra by train or bus at their convenience. You can take a train from your city to the “Jammu Tawi” railway station. From Jammu Tawi, one can take a bus or train directly to Katra. Although if available prefer taking a train from your city directly to Katra as it will be much more convenient and time-saving. The approximate rate of the train or bus are as mentioned:

Delhi -> Katra (Railway Station): Rs 1300 (3rd AC) Delhi -> Jammu Tawi (Railway Station): Rs 910 (3rd AC) Jammu Tawi -> Katra (By Bus): Rs 60

Yatra Parchi Registration Vaishno Devi

After you have successfully reached the city of Katra which is also known as “Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra” (SMVD), the next thing you need to do is register yourself for the darshan of Mata Vaishno Devi. Whether you reach Katra by Bus or Train, at both places you can find the registration counter for Mata Vaishno Devi Darshan.

Queue up yourself and get yourself registered.

Note: Every individual needs to stand in the queue for registration and one person cannot register on behalf of any other family member.

At the registration counter, you will have to tell your name, city, and ZIP Code to get yourself registered successfully. Take the registration card and carefully keep it with you.

Rooms and Lodging in Katra ( Vaishno Devi)

The Katra Railway station has been built only a few years back and thus has almost all the services needed by a tourist. The station consists of rooms at cheap costs, a canteen and well-furnished washrooms. You can take a room provided by IRCTC if available otherwise it is also convenient to book rooms near the Katra main chowk.

The rates of rooms at Katra railway station can vary from Rs 500 to Rs 2600 as per your choice.

Although, if you are planning a budget-friendly trip, low-cost rooms are advised to be taken since you don’t have to spend much time in them.

Katra Railway Station to Katra Bus Stand

If you are someone who has reached Katra via Bus, then the spot to begin your journey towards the temple is nearby, but the people who reach Katra by train, need to take an auto rickshaw from Katra Railway station to Katra Bus Stand. The cost of an auto rickshaw from the railway station to the bus stand is Rs 110. If you haven’t already booked a room at Katra railway station you can look for rooms near Katra Bus Stand.

The cost of the room near the bus stand can vary from Rs 500 to Rs 1000 as per your choice.

Note: If you are planning a budget trip, you can also rent a room for 2-3 hours to refresh yourself and then in the same hotel you can submit your bags in the lockers. This will help you save the complete cost of the room and also provide you with free lockers to drop off your luggage.

Starting the Yatra of Vaishno Devi

The trek of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Temple is 13 Km long adding 2 km more situated the Temple of Bhairon Ji. After reaching Katra Bus Stand, the Katra main chowk is just a few steps ahead. From Katra main chowk, one needs to go to the

“Banganga Check Post” where the checking procedure is done and the trek starts.

The distance of Banganga Check Post from Katra main chowk is approximately 1 km and you can also rent an auto till there. If you wish you cover the distance on foot, you can simply follow up on the way.

The cost of an auto rickshaw from Katra main chowk to Banganga Check Post is Rs 200.

It is also suggested to eat something light from the Katra main chowk before starting the trek.

Leaving your luggage behind, you need to carry a small bag to take essential things with you on the trek.

The Yatra of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi can be completed in 12 hours or it can also be done in two days as per your wish.

The main essentials which must be included in your bag are a water bottle (even an empty bottle will work since there are many water points during the trek), light meals including fruits and snacks, refreshments, basic first aid, and medicines.

Although, the availability of every basic need is provided in the way it is best to carry your things.

No network Availability

As soon as you enter the state of Jammu, none of your SIM cards will work. The network will be unavailable no matter what the SIM might be. So to stay connected and use the internet, you can buy a new SIM card for yourself which will be available at many shops during the trek.

The cost of the SIM card is Rs 250 and you will get unlimited calling and 1 GB/day of data (Jio).

Postpaid SIM cards will also work in Jammu, so if you don’t need to buy a new SIM if you already have a postpaid one. You can also buy a new postpaid SIM for permanent use. The recharge of postpaid SIM card starts with Rs 399 in most SIM card providers.

If you don’t wish to buy a new SIM card, you can make use of the PCO facility which is available at several spots during the trek.

The cost of calling the PCO booths is Rs 5/min.

Reaching BanGanga Check Post

After reaching the Banganga check post, you can show your registration card/parchi and start your trek. At the Banganga check post flows the small and auspicious banganga river. People often take a bath here and then continue the journey ahead.

If you are planning to take a bath in the Banganga there are bathing spots available as soon as you cross the Banganga check post.

Now the main trek of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi has started. To make your journey slightly easy you can take sticks or dandi or lathi to act as a support during the trek. The cost of the Lathi/Dandi/stick is Rs 20 from which Rs 10 is refunded when you return it. Remember to return the stick at the same shop where you bought it

otherwise shopkeepers don’t accept it.

Pony/Horses and Palki

The trek of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi is a tough one and thus there are the availability of Ponies/Horses and Palki for people. It is also suggested to take the old routed (Purana marg) to reach the temple. The new Tarakot Marg is under construction and is not chosen by people as of now.

Ponies/Horses: Rs 1000 per person (till Bhawan)

The cost of Palki is slightly more as compared to Ponies/Horses. Though the cost of these services varies from spot to spot.

About the Trek (First Darshan)

On your way during the trek, you will witness many small and beautiful temples. There are shops and eating joints where you can refresh yourself by buying drinks like lemon juice, lassi, etc.

There are many shortcuts through stairs on the whole trek which can be taken to save time. But it is not advised to old people or heart patients to go through stairs as it will tire you up a lot.

In the beginning, you will also see shops where you can get a photo clicked with an idol of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi. The cost to get a photo is approximately Rs 30 and it can vary as per the size. There are also sofa massage shops where you can give some relief to your legs for just Rs 30 for fifteen minutes. Other shops on the way include dry fruit shops, candy shops, fruit shops, etc.

The first major darshan is done at the “ Charan Paduka” temple which lies after about one hour of the trek, nearly 3 km from the Banganga check post. The temple is generally crowd-free and thus you can quickly see the auspicious charan padukas of Mata Vaishno Devi.

Way to Ardkuari Ji

After the Charan Paduka temple, you will further move on to the next destination called “Ardkuari Mandir”. On your way on the trek, you can make use of the PCO

calling booths if you haven’t bought a sim card. After covering a journey of around 7 km, you will reach your next destination at the Ardhkuari Mandir.

There is a lot of waiting at the Mandir, so you need to take a parchi and get yourself allotted to a group to witness “Garbh Joon” the main cave of Ardhkuari. After this, there is a waiting period of a maximum of 15 hours before you can do the darshan of Ardkuari Ji. So, it is wise to move forward with your yatra towards Bhavan, and on the way back you can get the darshan of Ardhkuari Ji (till then your group number would have come).

If you are planning to spend a night at Ardkuari Ji by any chance, there is a facility of Blankets (although there is a lot of rush to get one), double bedrooms are available at Rs 700 and dormitories are available at Rs 120/person.

Way to Bhawan (Shri Mata Vaishno Devi main temple)

From Ardhkuari, there is also the facility to take electricity-powered minivans to reach Bhawan (the main temple). The cost of these vans is:

From Ardkuari to Bhawan: Rs 356/person From Bhawan to Ardkuari: Rs 236/person.

After the trek of almost 6 km, you will see the auspicious temple of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi which is also called Bhawan. On your way from Ardkuari to Bhawan, you will see many monkeys of whom one needs to be aware. They snatch things, especially edible items.

After reaching Bhawan, you can keep your bag, lathi, and any leather item you are carrying in the lockers. Lockers are available free of cost just near Bhawan. After keeping things in the locker, you can buy the Prashad from Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board Counter.

The cost of Prashad varies depending upon its quantity. The cost can be between Rs 51 to Rs 501. The average Prashad which most people buy is Rs 151.

Phones, mobile cameras, and any digital item is not allowed inside Bhawan and thus it is advised to leave them back in the locker.

As you enter the mandir, you need to walk nearly 100 meters to reach the cave of Mata Vaishno Devi. Here you need to stand in the queue inside a 42 meters long cave. After waiting for a while nearly half an hour, you will be able to do the darshan Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Ji and further move out of the cave.

Way to Bhairon Ji

After the trek of Bhawan comes to the trek of Bhairon Ji. It is a 2 km trek from Bhawan but is slightly more difficult than the trek to Bhawan. You can also take Ponies/Palki from Bhawan to Bhairon Ji.

There is also the availability of a Ropeway at the Bhawan which will land you directly at the Bhairon Temple. Although, the ropeway is only recommended if you are an old person since it takes a lot of time to buy a ticket and then stand in the queue for your turn to come.

The cost of the ropeway is Rs 100 (including both ways). If you want to take the ropeway for just one side then also the cost remains the same.

The cost of a Pony from Bhawan to Bhairon Ji costs around Rs 350.

If you are a youngster and trekking to Bhairon Ji on foot, it is advised to take the stairs since it will cover a lot of distance in no time.

After a 2 km trek, you will reach the Bhairon Temple where you can buy Prashad and easily do the darshan by waiting in queue for only 10-15 minutes. There is also an open space at the Bhairon temple from where you can enjoy the beautiful view of the mountains and an amazing sunset if you reach it at that time.

Things to know on your way back to Ardhkuari

After doing the auspicious darshan of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi and Bhairon Ji it is now time for you to return to Ardhkuari. While on your way back, you can either take the same path you came from or you can also choose to take the “Hathi Matha” route. The “Hathi Matha” route is a much silent, hassle-free, and quick route to go down. This route can be taken by going left to the Bhairon Temple.

On your way back through the Hathi Matha route, you can visit the prasad distribution counter where you can have the Prasad free. Now you can reach Ardhkuari and check out if your group number has come.

Either your group number would be in a queue for some time or it would have already passed out before you reach Ardhkuari.

In case your group number has been passed, don’t panic. Get in the line of the next group and at the entrance let the guard know that your group has passed and they will let you in. This is a daily scenario at the temple and thus the guards are well aware of this situation.

How to book a Helicopter?

If you are someone looking to go to Bhawan via helicopter then this is what you need to do. The helicopter services at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi run from Katra to Sanjhichhat. Sanjhichat is a place near Bhawan where the helipad is made and thus the helicopter leaves you there.

To book a helicopter, you can either do a booking online at the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi shrine board website or a direct booking is also available when you reach Katra.

The cost of a helicopter is Rs 1045/person. Although it may vary as per the availability of the helicopter.

Legend has it that Vaishnavi, after leaving the Garbh Joon cave at Adhkawari where Bhairon Nath had located her, began climbing uphill until she reached the Holy Cave. Bhairon Nath, who was following her, found her again inside the cave and started to challenge her.

Must Know Before You Travel to Vaishno Devi

• Katra to Bhawan is 13km. It takes 5-8 hours to climb and 3-6 hours to ascend.
• Katra is the base camp for Vaishno Devi Yatra. Bus, taxi and train is available to Katra. Flight is available to Jammu 2 routes from Katra to Ardhkuwari (mid-point of the trek). The old route is 5.5km. This has Charan Paduka temple enroute. The new route is 7.5km. This is better to come down as it is steeper.
• Ardhkuwari to Vaishno Devi Bhawan has 2 routes. One is 6.5km steep uphill. The other one is shorter 5.5 km and less steep.
• Katra to Bhawan: Mule: INR 1250 one side/per person, Palki: INR 3150 one side/pp, Pitthoo: INR 540 one side/pp
• Ropeway: INR 100 two way/pp from Bhawan to Bhairon Nath Temple
• Helicopter: INR 1730 from Katra to Sanjichhat (1.5km from Bhawan). Ponies vaishno devi trek are also available from Helipad to Bhavan

How to reach vaishno devi bhawan from katra.

There are two ways to travel from Katra to Maa Vaishno Devi Bhawan – by road and by air. Devotees can also hire ponies, palki, electric vehicles, and helicopters. Let’s see each in detail –

By Road (Holy track) –

By Pony/ Palki- From Katra, pilgrims can hire a pony/ horse and palki/ palanquin from Darshani Darwaja – the starting point of the holy sojourn till Ardhkuwari or Bhawan. They can take a night halt at Ardhkuwari if required. Ardhkuwari is halfway through the holy Yatra, just 6 km from the base.

By Trekking –

Devotees who wish to walk till bhawan can choose from three paths –.

An old track that starts from Darshani Darwaja and covers Ban Ganga, Charan Paduka, Ardhkuwari, Himkoti, and Sanjichhat. The second route also starts from Darshani Darwaza and covers Ban Ganga and Charan Paduka; starting. Just below Ardhkuwari near Indraprastha viewpoint. It is short by 500 vaishno devi trek than the old route, where ponies are not allow.  This track is much wider and gentler than other tracks. The third track is the newest, which starts from Tarakote, and doesn’t allow ponies and palkis. With a comfortable gradient and sideway amenities, this route has a ramp-type design and offers scenic views. Tarakote Marg is also link with the Banganga-Ardhkuwari track, which takes off near Gulshan Langar. This is a 1.5 km link route that provides the choice to Yatris to choose between the Banganga-Ardhkuwari route or the purely pedestrian Tarakote Marg.

By Helicopter –

Devotees can embark on Vaishno Devi Yatra by helicopter, vaishno devi trek starting from Katra. The flight will drop you at Sanjichhat, just 2.5 km from the holy cave. The facility of online helicopter booking is available on the vaishno devi trek Shrine Board’s official website. Advance booking can done 60 days before the journey. Passengers must carry valid ID proof, address proof, and debit/credit card with which payment has made. In the absence of any of the documents, boarding can be denied.

Pilgrims can also book the ticket offline. Katra to Sanjichhat helicopter tickets can also book from the Current-heli ticket counter, where the passengers’ valid ID proof and travel documents should be present. Offline ticket booking is subject to the availability of seats.

One-way or two-way helicopter tickets can book from the website. Vaishno Devi vaishno devi temple Yatra helicopter booking is also available for Katra-Sanjichhat-Katra. To and from helicopter ticket is also consider a vaishno devi trek VIP Pass for Darshan. However, a one-way ticket from Katra-Sanjichhat or Sanjichhat-Katra is not consider a VIP Pass.

• Air:  Jammu has a civil airport, which hosts many domestic planes. From there one can take taxi to reach Katra. The distance is 48.3 kilometers.
• Rail:  Sree Shakti train that starts from Delhi on Friday evenings and returns to Delhi on Sunday morning is the best way to reach Vaishno Devi.
• Road:  Katra is the nearest place to start the journey to Vaishno Devi. Taxis and buses regularly run on this road.

How can i reach katra.

Katra is located at a distance of 50 km from Jammu. Jammu is well connected with major destinations of India by road, rail and air. Taxis and cabs are easily available for Katra from Jammu airport and Jammu Railway Station. Regular bus services between Jammu and Katra operate from the General Bus Stand at Jammu. Even Roadways and Private Deluxe buses also runs from Jammu for Katra.

What should I do before proceeding for the Yatra from Katra?

Before proceeding to Bhawan for Darshans please ensure the following:

• Obtain a Yatra Parchi (slip) from the Yatra registration Counter at the general Bus stand Katra. You won’t be allowed to move beyond Ban Ganga check post without the darshan slip.
• Video Camera and other electronic equipment are not permitted on the track. So, don’t carry them.
• If you have any medical problems then avoid using the stairs.
• Don’t carry any extra luggage. Leave all the unnecessary things at Katra. Food, drinks and blankets are available on the route.
• Get your room booked for Bhawan / Sanji Chhat / Adhkwari from Enquiry and Reservation Shakti Bhawan, Niharika and collect your papers to be shown at the location for which the room is booked.
• Don’t carry too much jewelry or cash or valuables.

What are the necessary things that one should carry before starting the Vaishno Devi pilgrimage?

• Carry the parchi or Yatra Access Slip that is available at the Yatra Registration Counter at Katra. It is essential that every visitor must have a yatra slip.
• In case you have registered any room then do carry the room reservation papers if any.
• For the winter season carry heavy woolens and light woolens for summer season.
• A pair of one comfortable walking shoes is a must. You can carry extra garments & shoes as per the season.
• Facilities like medical help, blanket shops, public utilities are available on the yatra route. So, for a relaxed trek carry light.

How much time does it take to reach Bhawan from Katra?

The holy cave of Vaishno Devi is situated at a distance of 13 km from Katra. On foot yatra starts from Darshani Deodi. The time taken to complete the journey by walk varies according to the weather, your fitness and crowd. For a physically fit person it takes around four to five hours to reach the Holy Bhawan.

 Where to stay at during Vaishno Devi Yatra? Are good accommodation facilities available at Vaishno Devi?

Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board offers clean and economical accommodation services for the yatris. Accommodation at Jammu is available at Vaishnavi Bhawan, Kalika Dham and Saraswati Dham. At Katra you can stay at Niharika Yatra Niwas, Shakti Bhawan and Ashirwad Bhawan or at private hotels. One can stopover at Trikuta Bhawan, a 700 bedded accommodation. Dormitory accommodation is also available at Jammu, Katra and Adhikuwari Bhawan. Yatris can also plan to stay at Adkuwari, Main Bhawan and Sanjichatt.

The advance reservation of rooms/dormitories at all Shrine Board Guest Houses is done at the Enquiry and Reservation Centre of the Board at Niharika Complex. You can also book the rooms online. It is advisable to book the rooms in advance as during the peak season it becomes difficult to get a room.

How and where to make donations at Vaishno Devi?

Donations made by the pilgrims are purely used by the Shrine Board towards maintenance of the holy shrine. It is also used for the development of infrastructure facilities for the visiting pilgrims. Offerings towards the shrine can be made in cash or through demand drafts or cheques. Various donations counters has been set up by the Shrine Board where devotees can offer donations. There centers are available at Bhawan, Adkuwari, Sanjichatt, Bhawan, Enquiry and Reservation Section at Nikarika, Katra and at Central Office of Shrine Board located at Katra. Computerized process has been developed at these donation centers and has well trained manpower.

After making the donations, a printed donation receipt is issued to the devotees. Devotees can make the cash donations at danpatras that are located inside and outside the Holy Cave.

Are palkies and poines services available at Vaishno Devi?

Many ponies, pithoos or palkies services are available for reaching the Holy Bhawan. You can contact the contractor’s office at Bhawan, Katra or Adhkuwari and hire a registered ponies, palkies or pithoos. The rates of these ponies, pithoos or palkies are fixed and approved by the government. Yatris must make sure to note down the registration number of the person engaged for reference purposes in case of urgency.

 Which is the best season to visit Vaishno Devi? What are the weather conditions of Vaishno Devi?

The best season for Vaishno Devi Yatra is March to October. Although Vaishno Devi is open throughout the year, but the climate during these months is pleasant and ideal to enjoy the pilgrimage. For a quiet yatra, avoid visiting Vaishno Devi during Navratras.

At Bhawan, during summer season temperature gets moderate and reaches 30 °C. In winters mercury drops down to sub-zero level and reaches -5°C. Winters are accompanied by heavy snowfall during November, December & January months and weather gets freezing cold.

What is the procedure for Darshan at Vaishno Devi?

All the pilgrims are required to get registered at Yatra Registration Counter at Katra Bus Stand before moving further from Katra. The counter is open from 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM. A Yatri Parchi (slip) at free of cost will be issued at the counter on getting registered. During the peak season clearing capacity at Bhawan may get exceed, so in such a case a temporary waiting slip is issued and yaris are held back at Katra. It is later converted into final slip on first come first served basis.

Pilgrims will have to get the yatra slip verified at Banganga slip check post and Bhawan slip check post. On arriving at Bhawan, a fresh group number is assigned to the pilgrim which is stamped on the Yatra Parchi collected from Katra. It is necessary to have this number for having Darshan at Bhawan.

Is it safe to travel Vaishno Devi with old age people?What facilities are available for old age people/children at Vaishno Devi?

Devotees of all age groups can travel to Vaishno Devi. It is absolutely safe and convenient. Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board has developed many facilities on the trek route to Holy Bhawan for the yatris. Adequate facilities like medical camps (24 hour charitable dispensary), oxygen cylinders, accommodation, catering, porters are available at Katra, Bhawan, Banganga, Sanjhichatt, Adkuwari. A 24 hr ICU is also present at Bhawan. Many ponies, palkies or pithoos facilities on the routes are also available.

But if a person is suffering from breathing problems, asthmatic, orthopedic problems or some other ailments, then it is advisable to proceed for the yatra after consulting a doctor and due medical check-up.

How to reach Vaishno Devi?

The nearest railway station to Vaishno Devi is Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra Railway Station (20 km). If you plan to travel by air then Jammu Tawi Airport is the nearest airport that is 46.7 km away. Many buses ply to Katra from major cities of India. You can also book a taxi or a hire a cab.

Katra is the base camp for Vasihno Devi temple trek. From Katra it is a 13 km uphill trek to Holy Bhawan. Devotees can reach the temple by waking or by ponies, coolies or dandis. There are two routes to the Vaishno Devi Holy Bhawan-main route and alternative route. Main route path is well pucca and tiled. The alternative route is 500 m shorter and no palkies are allowed on this route.

How is Vaishno Devi trek?

The trek to Vaishno Devi temple starts from Katra. It is a 13 km trek and a good ascent. The two routes for reaching the Holy Bhawan of Vaishno Devi are main route and alternative route. The main route to the Holy Bhawan is pucca and well paved. More then 5 km of the route has been covered with rain shelters and waters points are also present along the route. Proper lights have been installed on the route so you can move in the night also.

Alternative route is 500 m shorter then the main route. But no ponies are allowed on this route. The route starts from just below Adhkuwari near Indraprastha View Point and ends just short of the Bhawan.
