    Nov 2022. Tours of the dam are no longer offered due to security concerns. Instead, visit the Dewey Short Visitor Center, a great three-story building with interactive exhibits that explain the construction and purpose of the dam to manage the risks of flooding and to produce clean hydroelectric power. The visitor center is FREE.

This actually takes you on a guided tour inside the dam so that you can see the massiveness and complexity of the facilities, and learn the history.
