Here is a list of highly-recommended tourist spots and activities that you shouldn’t miss when in Virac, Catanduanes.

Maribina Falls is the most popular and most accessible waterfall from Virac’s town proper. Its name is the combination of the two barangays where the waterfall is located: Barangays Marinawa and Binanwahan.

The falls is 10 kilometers from Virac town proper. The water from the falls cascades down the mountain into a series of pools that you can wade into. 

Binurong Point in Baras town is a place that offers equally jaw-dropping views of the open ocean crashing against rocks. 

Be prepared for a bit of a hike as you will be passing forest trails, hiking up former pasturelands, skipping through boulders, and walking on narrow paths. But the view from the top of the cliff. especially during sunrise, will be worth the hike.

Other viewpoints near Virac that are also worth visiting are the Balacay Point, and the PAGASA Weather Radar Station.

Its simple beauty will seduce you into taking a dip in the water or lie down on the sand to get the perfect tan. On a clear day, you can even spot Mayon Volcano in Legazpi, Albay from Marilima Beach.

There is also a small fishing community near Marilima Beach, so expect to see small fishing boats dotting the coast.

Right next to Marilima Beach is the small, but no less stunning Batag Beach. Its powdery white sand beach is bordered by coconut trees. Behind the trees are small hills that are similar to Bohol ’s Chocolate Hills.

It is said that on a clear day, you can see Mayon Volcano in Albay and Bulusan Volcano in Sorsogon from the shores of Batag. Lounge, swim, and have fun with your friends and family while in Batag Beach.

Standing tall since the 1800s, St. John the Baptist Church, more commonly known as the Bato Church, is the oldest church on the island. It’s one of the most preserved tourist spots in the province due to its cultural importance.

The church is a simple, freestanding two-story structure made from coral stones. To get to Bato Church, you can take a 20-minute jeepney or tricycle ride from Virac to Bato.

According to local legend, Nahulugan Falls is named after a farmer and his carabao who fell while crossing the hilltop. Water then began to cascade from where the farmer and his loyal companion fell. 

No matter what its real origins are, the Nahulugan Falls is a majestic wonder of nature. Getting to the beautiful three-tiered Nahulugan Falls in Gigmoto is like unwrapping a precious present.

The falls are surrounded by lush forests that filter the sunlight, giving the whole area a secret, magical aura.

Right within Virac is the equally beautiful Mamangal Beach. The beach is lined with trees where you can set up your sarong and lie down on the shaded sandy shore.

At low tide, you can easily see various seagrass in between wave-combed cream sand. Scuba divers can also take the plunge to see marine life off the coast of Mamangal Beach. It is just about 3 kilometers south of Amenia Beach.

Located in the neighboring town of San Andres is Amenia Beach, a long stretch of cream-colored sand and shallow waters that is safe for kids to swim in. At low tide, you can see wave-combed sand that stretches for miles.

If you want to feel as if you have a whole stretch of unspoiled beach all to yourself, head over to Balite Beach. 

Locked in between a small fishing village and a mangrove forest, this beach is a hidden gem practically devoid of visitors.

It is also lined with trees along the shore, so you can watch the waves under the shade or while you mingle with the locals.

Also known as the Virac Cathedral, the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception has beautiful stained-glass windows surrounding its walls. The church is a reminder of the religious heritage of the province.

Inside the cathedral, the ceiling has been remodeled and patterned to look like the dome of St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican.  Virac Cathedral is located along Rizal Avenue at the center of town.

11. See the Jesus’ Face Rock at Talisoy Beach

Located in a small cove a few minutes from Virac town proper is the clean and well-kept Talisoy Beach, also known to locals as Jesus’ Face Beach because of the unique rock formation that is said to look like the face of Jesus Christ.

Beyond this unique feature, you can also go sunbathing on the fine white sand beach or swim in the cove’s clear, calm waters. The seabed is a little rocky, so make sure you wear aqua shoes if you want to take a dip.

You can rent a nipa cottage near the beach if you plan to stay in the area for the day.

Igang Beach is a popular spot for surf boarding and windsurfing. It’s also called the Twin Rock Beach because of the huge rock formations that are located on both ends of the beach. 

Because the waters of this beach run quite deep, swimming is prohibited in most areas, though there is a deep pool near the rock formations that has become a popular diving spot for tourists.

Located at Igang Beach is the Twin Rock Beach Resort, so you can book your accommodations there before you explore the other beaches around Virac.

If you’re a fan of heritage, make sure to visit Museo de Catanduanes. The museum displays artifacts and memorabilia that tells the story of the province’s rich heritage and culture.

The museum is on the second and third floors of the old capitol building at Virac town proper and is open on weekdays. It is quite near food establishments too so you can grab a bite after visiting the museum.

A place for reverence and worship, this cave-inspired chapel at Cavinitan's Fiat House is a popular attraction not only for its devotees, but for travelers as well. Its floors and walls emulate the caves, with light from the altar illuminating the whole chapel. You'll feel the peace and quiet once you enter Fiat House.

Take a break from beach-hopping and spend a few minutes in quiet contemplation at this unique chapel that was made to look like a cave. Pray and contemplate while inside and enjoy the solemnity it brings.

CATANDUANES: The Unseen Beaches of Virac

One time you’re chilling at your hotel in the city proper, next thing you know you’re at the back of a motorbike hopping from one postcard-worthy beach to the next.  This is exactly what I did in Virac , the unassuming capital of Catanduanes province geographically located in the easternmost part of the Bicol Peninsula but separated from the mainland Bicol by Maqueda Channel and the Lagonoy Gulf .

Catanduanes earned the moniker “The Land of the Howling Winds”, mainly because it is the first landmass in the Philippines to kiss the Pacific Ocean, making it directly open to the to the path of tropical storms entering the country.  Thus, some of its beaches produce ceaseless waves that are perfect for surfing, like the majestic Puraran Beach, the region’s surfing mecca where Bicol’s surfing culture was born.

But while Catanduanes is fast gaining attention for surfing, the province has more to offer, from undulating valleys, jungle-clad mountains, palm-fringed beaches, mystical caves and pristine waterfalls to vast agricultural lands, old Spanish-era churches, hand-woven traditional products and seafood overload.  Even its often hightailed capital – Virac has some of the best beaches in the province like what I have discovered during my Catanduanes trip.  And I wish to showcase their beauty through this Catanduanes travel blog.

Yes, Virac is not all about the cafes sprinkled around the town square, the modest Museo de Catanduanes housed at a beautifully-restored heritage mansion, or the colossal Virac Cathedral .

TRAVEL BLOG CONTENTS

VIRAC, CATANDUANES BEACHES

Mamangal Beach is a local favorite.

We wound up south of Virac where most of the fine sandy beaches are located.  We got lost, so instead of heading to the famous  Twin Rock Beach Resort  of Puraran in Catanduanes,  we were already past Sto. Domingo Bridge on the main highway.  Fortunately, at that point, it is wise to make a detour to Mamangal Beach .  This piece of paradise seems like a local favorite. The placid sun-spangled sea was jam-packed with locals swimming and children frolicking in the water.  Others were playing beach volleyball, and a good number were taking respite under the shade of the trees standing shoulder to shoulder on the shore.

Our next stop was Balite Beach and along the road, we stumbled on some cheerful yet camera-shy kids with their grandmother hanging out by the roadside Surprisingly, the  road network on this part of Catanduanes is paved, unlike in other provinces in the Philippines where far flung communities are nearly unreachable because of hellish roads.

Having said this, reaching Balite was swift. In contrast to Mamangal Beach, the seaside is virtually empty, save for two children by the shore and an empty fishing boat floating in the sea.  Balite Beach is hemmed in by an unpretentious fishing village, and nearby, a gorgeous mangrove forest is thriving against the tide.  I reckon there was nothing much to do there except for swimming, the beach is also devoid of any luxury trappings nor open cottages where tourists can relax.  But the huge swath of golden sand here spreads hundred of yards wide, which could offer lots of room for Frisbee and sand volleyball courts.  They may want to consider that in the future if they want to develop this beach to attract more tourists.

We head on to the next beach we saw on the Catanduanes map – Marilima Beach .  This is by far my favorite Virac beach, the inconceivable turquoise water dappled with yellow fishing boats is simply stunning, seducing visitors like me to take a dip in the refreshing water. Definitely my kind of beach to get tanned, picnic and feast on seafood!  Here, small coconut palms back powdered-sugary soft sands and perfect waves peel off in several directions on the bay.

Nearby Marilima, are two other beaches worth visiting: the sun – spangled Batag White Beach and the Bosdak Beach .  These two lovely stretch of white sand surely also add up to the catalog of beautiful surprises in Virac.

We decided to go further to check out Talisoy Beach which is reportedly a breeding ground for pawikans.  Unfortunately, we missed it and found ourselves at its more famous neighbor – the Twin Rock Beach Resort .  Unlike most beaches we explored in Virac, this last one proves to be more developed and has made its mark on Catanduanes’ tourist map.

My exploration of south Virac only proves that this cozy countryside escape of pastoral rolling hills and vast stretches of sandy beaches is worth unraveling.   And your wallet need not be endowed to journey here, simply charter a motorbike (or tricycle if you are traveling in groups) and the rewards of such explorations may be immense.  True enough, its sheer isolation summons every creative soul to immortalize its beauty in pixels.

HOW TO GET TO VIRAC CATANDUANES:

Cebu Pacific has direct flights to Virac, Catanduanes from Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3 in Manila every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday.

Alternatively, you can take a bus bound for Tabaco City, Albay from Cubao, Pasay or Alabang in Metro Manila. From Tabac wharf, hop across the sea through a RORO ferry to reach the island of Catanduanes.

You can catch the ferry that leaves for Virac at 6:30 AM or if you miss that, take the 1:00 PM ferry to San Andres.

From San Andres seaport, you may charter a tricycle to Virac (recommended if you are in groups) or ride a jeep en route to Virac which is usually parked outside the harbor.

CATANDUANES: DIY TRAVEL GUIDE + ITINERARY

While Catanduanes remains largely uncharted explored by mass tourism, it has long been known as one of the best surfing spots in the Philippines.  Catanduanes ’ eastern shores is home to the “Majestics”, a surfing spot facing the Pacific Ocean.  But more than surfing, Catanduanes is slowly gaining attention because of its dramatic landscape and seascapes.  Rising tourist attractions in Catanduanes includes Binurong Point and Balacay Point that offers gorgeous views of the azure ocean lapping the green rolling hills.  Catanduanes also boast some of the finest beaches in the Philippines like Puraran Beach, Twin Rock Beach, Sakahon Beach, and Marilima Beach, among others.

If you’re planning on traveling to Catanduanes soon, here’s a sample itinerary that’s perfect for a long weekend getaway, feel free to tweak it.

WHAT'S IN THIS BLOG POST?

CATANDUANES ITINERARY: DAY 1 – BATO CATANDUANES TOUR

This sample budget is good for 2 persons traveling together.  Trip expenses doesn’t cover airfare or ferry + bus fare from Manila, and souvenirs. Regular roundtrip airfare starts at ₱ 5187, it can go lower during seat sale.  Otherwise, your next option is to take a bus from Manila to Tabaco (approximately 10 hours) and take a ferry or fast craft to Virac or San Andres ( ₱350) .

Also, for this Catanduanes itinerary:

• DAY 1 – Resort is in Puraran Beach Baras. CHECK ROOM RATES HERE OR RESERVE HERE
• Day 2 – 3 – Hotel in Virac, Catanduanes. CHECK ROOM RATES HERE

This Catanduanes itinerary assumes that you are traveling from Manila to Virac by plane.  Cebu Pacific flight from Manila leaves at 6:35 AM and estimated arrival in Virac Airport  at 7:45 AM.  Travel time is roughly 1 hour and 10 minutes.

Upon arrival at Virac Airport, you can hire a tricycle to your hotel in Virac, or Baras (Puraran) or wherever part of Virac.  Rates would vary depending on the location of your hotel.

But, to maximize your time, I recommend hiring a tricycle for 1 day tour upon your arrival and ask the driver to drop by at your hotel so you can leave your luggage first.  Rates depend on your haggling skill, but usually it’s ₱1,500 ($29 – €26) – ₱2,000 ($38 – €34) good for 2 – 3 persons, depending on the tourist spots in Catanduanes that you want to visit. For the sample Catanduanes itinerary above, rate is about ₱2,000 ($38 – €34) , good for 2 – 3 persons.

If you are arriving via Virac Port, there are jeepneys to Baras for ₱35 and UV Express to Baras for ₱100 per person in downtown Virac.  In Baras, you can then take a tricycle to your beach resort in Puraran for about ₱50. This will save you a few bucks.  You can talk to your tricycle driver regarding the Catanduanes tricycle tour.  Rate should be cheaper if you hire a tricycle in Baras to tour Bato tourist spots since the distance is closer compared to Virac.  Expect to pay around ₱1,000 ($19 – €17) – ₱1,500 ($29 – €26) good for 2 – 3 persons for a day tour and depending on the tourist spots that you want to visit.

For my sample Catanduanes itinerary above, for Day 1, best to stay in Puraran Beach and tour Bato for 1 whole day.

The top tourist spots in Bato that are included in the Day 1 itinerary are:

• Binurong Point
• Bote Lighthouse
• Sakahon Beach
• Poseidon Rock
• Bato Church

You may also include a trip to Balacay Point, which is still part of Baras. Then end the day by chilling at Puraran Beach.

  For Day 2 and Day 3, it is recommended to stay in Virac as it is closer to Virac Airport and Virac Port.

For the sample Catanduanes itinerary above, you can check out from your Puraran Beach Resort on Day 2, in the morning.  There are UV Express (₱100 – $2 – €2) and jeepneys (₱35 – $0.67 – €0.60) from Baras to Virac. But you can also opt to hire a tricycle and make a side trip to Maribina Falls  in Bato and Twin Rock Beach Resort in Virac. I’ll go for the tricycle rental to maximize the time. Expect to shell out approximately ₱800 ($15 – €14) – ₱1,000 ($19 – €17).

After visiting Maribina Falls and Twin Rock Beach Resort, it’s time to check-in at tour resort in Virac.  By then, it should be time for lunch.  Virac is peppered with restaurants and eateries, so you’ll have a lot of choices for dining.  After lunch, you can opt to rest, or  better yet, explore Virac tourist spots since you’re already there.

Below are some of the tourist attractions in downtown Virac. No need to hire a tricycle, you can just hail one and then ride to your preferred destination below. Regular fare is ₱ 10 ($0.19 – €0.17) per person.

• FIAT House Inspired Chapel

After your quick tour of Virac, you can catch the sunset at Virac Port, and have dinner before retiring to your hotel.

CATANDUANES ITINERARY:  DAY 3  – DEPARTURE

Day 3 is departure time.  If your headed to Virac Airport, your best bet is hiring a tricycle.  It’s about a 10 minute ride from downtown Virac, so fare shouldn’t cost you an arm and leg. Prepare around ₱150 ($3 – €3) – ₱200 ($4- €3).

But, if you’re taking the ferry to Tabaco from Virac Port, you can walk to the wharf from your hotel or take a tricycle for ₱ 10 ($0.19 – €0.17) per person.

CATANDUANES TRIP EXPENSES

So, there you go. That’s a sample 3 Day 2 Nights Catanduanes itinerary for budget travelers, perfect for a long weekend trip.  The above itinerary should cost you roughly ₱3,325 ($63.16 – €59.71) per person if you are a party of 2.  Airfare and ferry + bus fare not included in the calculation.  The sample budget  above can be higher if you opt to stay in a more expensive resort or hotel or dine in a fancy restaurant.

HOW TO GET TO CATANDUANES

By Bus + Ferry

1.From Manila, ride a bus to Tabaco, Albay. Travel time is about 10 hours.

You can book your bus tickets in advance below, to make sure you secure a seat because due to limited buses, they are usually full.

2.Alight at Tabaco Port.

3.Ride a ferry/RORO (2.5 – 3 hours) or fast craft (1.5 hours) to Virac Port or San Andres Port.

Here’s the ferry fare to Catanduanes:

RORO (roll-on, roll-off/slow ferry)

Adult: ₱230 (ordinary), ₱300 (aircon)

Children (4-11 years old): ₱115 (ordinary), ₱150 (aircon)

Senior Citizen, PWD, Student: ₱184 (ordinary), ₱240 (aircon)

Here’s the fast craft fare to Catanduanes:

Adult: ₱320

Children: ₱145

Senior Citizen, PWD, Student: ₱230

Catanduanes: Updated Guide to Happy Island + 5 Days Itinerary

I have said it before and will say it again — Catanduanes is one of the most underrated destinations in the Philippines. With its pastoral hills, cliffs, and beaches, you won’t run out of places to see and things to do in this province.

Catanduanes is located in the easternmost side of Luzon. It used to be called the “The Land of Howling Winds” since it’s position is open to the path of tropical storms entering the country. Recently, it’s being marketed as “Happy Island” which is a more positive nickname for this beautiful province.

Hali and I went here sometime in 2016. On the first day of our trip, I immediately knew that this place is special. We spent days exploring the province, from the hidden beaches in Caramoran to the now-famed Binurong Point in Baras. In most of the places we’d visited, there were few or no people at all.

Tourism in Catanduanes is relatively new. In fact, its local tourism branch was only established around 2016 as well. There is still so much to discover in Catanduanes.

Here’s a starter guide on your journey here, including a sample 5 days itinerary.

When is the best time to visit

The easiest way to get to Catanduanes is to book a flight to Virac. As of this writing, Cebu Pacific flies once a day from Manila to Virac.

It will take about 15-16 hours of land travel to get to Catanduanes.

• Option 1: From Manila (Cubao, Pasay or Alabang), ride a bus with direct route to Tabaco. Fare is about P840, and travel time is 11-12 hours.
• Option 2: An alternative is to ride a bus to Legazpi. Travel time is 12 hours. From Legazpi bus terminal, ride a jeep or van bound for Tabaco.
• From Tabaco, ride a pedicab to Tabaco Port.
• Once in Tabaco Port, you can ride a passenger boat to either San Andres Port (P290 aircon, P220 non-aircon) or Virac Port (P320 aircon, P240 non-aircon). Travel time is about 4 hours. There is also a fast craft available to either port. Fare is P320 and travel time is shorter at 2 hours. However, schedules for the fast craft are limited.

It’s best to head directly to Virac Port, since Virac is the capital of the province and it’s easy to find hotels and resorts there. Other attractions in Catanduanes are also accessible from Virac.

If you got a ferry to San Andres Port, you can ride a jeepney or charter a tricycle to take you to Virac.

It’s important to plan your schedule carefully. As mentioned above, Catanduanes is in the path of tropical storms so it’s not recommended to go here the rainy season.

The best time to visit Catanduanes is during the summer months, from March to May.

From Virac, there are public vans, jeepneys, and tricycles that can take you around or to nearby towns.

The best way to explore Catanduanes is by chartering a private motorbike or tricycle. Rates vary depending on the destination. If you want to explore the attractions in Virac, a motorbike tour will cost you around P500. If you want to go further, it will cost P1000 or higher.

You may also rent a motorbike per day. Rate is around P500.

Top Attractions in Catanduanes

There’s a lot of places to see in Catanduanes. Most blogs only talk about Twin Rock Beach Resort in Virac, Puraran, and Baras but there are more options out there. You can beach bum, island hop, surf, or trek across rolling hills. If you’re into history and culture, there are also old churches and lighthouses you can visit.

Here’s a general rundown of the best attractions in Catanduanes.

Virac is the capital city of Catanduanes. Here you can find city attractions including souvenir shops. Virac is also known for its beaches. The popular ones are the Twin Rock Beach Resort  in Igang and Mamangal Beach Resort in Balite.

To explore Virac, you can move around via public transpo or charter a private tricycle.

Virac is the jump-off point to other municipalities in Catanduanes: to Caramoran and Pandan (left) or Bato and Baras (right). From here, it’s easy to charter a habal-habal or tricycle to get to Bato or Baras.

Places to see:

• City tour : Virac Cathedral, Museo de Catanduanes, Virac Viewing Deck, FIAT House Inspired Chapel, souvenir stores
• Beaches : Twin Rock Beach, Mamangal Beach, Balite Beach, Marilima Beach, Talisoy Beach

Caramoran is located on the western side of Catanduanes. The main attraction in Caramoran is the Palumbanes Islands , specifically Bitaog Beach in Parongpong Island.

To get here, from Virac town proper ride a bus or van bound for Pandan and get off at Barangay Baybay in Caramoran. Travel time is 3 hours.

Trips from Virac to Pandan are from 9AM to 1PM only. From Pandan back to Virac, the earliest van schedule is 4AM and the latest schedule is 12noon – 1PM only, except on Fridays where there are vans leaving at 3PM.

Once you get to Caramoran, register at the tourism office. This is also near the port where you can proceed to island hopping. Rates for boat rental start at P1000-1500 for a small one.

Pandan is next to Caramoran.

The attractions here are close to each other. Cagnipa Rolling Hills is a scenic farmland. From here, you can see Carangyan Beach in the distance. You can also climb down to Tuwad-Tuwadan Natural Pool for a refreshing dip.

I don’t recommend going to the Hiyop Highlands because the trail consists of rough roads and there is nothing much to see there.

Bato is located on the north eastern side of Catanduanes. This is the closest municipality from Virac.

Here you can visit Bato Church and waterfalls. You can also head to Sakahon Beach which is the jump-off point to Bote Lighthouse. The trek to the lighthouse is steep and takes about 30 minutes. I suggest leaving your backpacks in your vehicle. Local kids normally volunteer to guide you to the lighthouse — don’t forget to give them a tip!

Another attraction in Bato is Poseidon Rock, located in the village of Carorian. This is a fairly new attraction, with unique rock formations and natural lagoons. There are also snorkeling sites nearby.

Just further ahead of Bato, you can find the municipality of Baras. It’s known for Binurong Point and Balacay Point, which are scenic pastoral cliffs. You can visit either area for sunrise viewing.

Binurong Point is the more popular one. It’s located within the private property of Kayandit Ranch. It requires an easy trek of about 20 minutes.

Aside from these, you can also find Puraran. Unbeknownst to many people Catanduanes is  famous for its great waves . Puraran is its main surfing spot. In fact, every October, Catanduanes holds an annual surfing competition, the Majestic Puraran Surfing Cup. Surfing months are July to October. Beginners can also visit from March to June.

You can go all the way up to Gigmoto to visit several waterfalls and beaches.

Bagamanoc is one of the least visited places in Catanduanes, but it’s worth visiting if you have time.

Ilihan Point is one of the most iconic spots in this province. It’s a phallic-shaped rock located in Bagamanoc Bay. It is also called “Boto ni Kurakog” or Fertility Island.

Catanduanes is part of Bicol Region, so you can enjoy Bicolano delicacies such as laing and bicol express.

Seafood is also available throughout the province. There is an abundance of fresh fish, as well as shrimps, crabs, and lobsters.

The food here is very affordable!

There’s a lot of options on places to stay in Catanduanes, depending on whether you want to book in a resort, hotel or homestay.

If you’re looking for a place to stay near the airport, we recommend Kemji Resort . It’s only 5 minutes away. It’s reasonably priced, with a pool and restaurant.

Here’s a summary of the major expenses:

• You can drop by the Tourism Office in Virac for assistance once you arrive in Catanduanes.
• Schedule of public vehicles especially to distant municipalities such as Pandan and Caramoran are limited. So do your research when planning your itinerary.
• There is minimal mobile signal in certain areas in Catanduanes.

Nope, I edited the text to clarify. Also pls note we traveled there back in 2016 pa and during our trip, habal-habal/tricycles do not have a standard rate so expect some adjustments when budgeting.

1. As far as I remember (this trip was dated 2016), we didn’t really have any clear expectation about Catanduanes. We only that it’s “beautiful” from what other backpackers said and it’s where we can find the popular Binurong Point (often likened to Batanes). 2. There’s a lot of provinces in the PH that are not popular yet, Catanduanes is just one of them. You have to understand that the surge of local travel is a recent phenomenon. Catanduanes isn’t that “known” yet but this is starting to change now. Catanduanes though has a disadvantage in terms of commuting from Manila – unlike other places in Bicol which are easier to visit, you need to take an overnight bus and then a ferry to get to Catanduanes. If you’re a typical backpacker that only has 3-4 days to spare for traveling, this isn’t a good option. There are flights to Virac but the schedule is limited and can be expensive unless bought in a promo period. Also, Catanduanes may need more marketing for its tourism… Its geographic location renders it susceptible to strong typhoons, so it’s unlike other tourist attractions where the weather is usually good or at the very least more tolerable. (That saying, we dearly love Catanduanes and think it’s one of the best provinces in the country for traveling.)

Catanduanes is a beauty that is so pure. Even if it’s always struck by typhoons during the rainy season, it still boasts of its wonder. I’m glad you found it as a happy place! Even if I’m from Albay and literally neighbors with the province, I haven’t explored it yet. Maybe next time though! Haha.

Hi! To minimize hassle for land trip, you can book a bus ticket in bicolisarog.com for an rsl bus. You can leave your bags in there when you boarded the ferry and come back when the ferry arrives in san andres port. Fare is 825php for aircon bus. Hope this helps. Wow! Just P 4,000 for two people to tour Catanduanes? Count us in! I would try to take a plane though as I know how energy consuming it is to travel for 12 hours for a light sleeper like me. How I wish we have a drone by that time. Catanduanes really looks like Batanes.

It’s P4000 each for 2 people. I had to re-check that I got it right. 🙂 But yeah it really is cheap. Usually we spend about P5000+ each for a 4-day trip.

Virac – An Untapped Wonder

Catanduanes is not just known for being a surfing spot, but one with a rich history and a ruggedly beautiful charm as well. Facing the Pacific Ocean, the Land of Howling Winds is no stranger to storms. It’s capital of Virac – although the main gateway to the province from Manila – isn’t hyped up as a tourist destination. In fact, those who want to visit Caramoan can use Virac as a gateway – it’s cheaper and a whole lot easier.

That said, you can either be glad that Virac has been spared from much tourism hype so it can preserve its natural beauty. However, those who have witnessed such a wonderful place will be loathe not to spill the beans on their marvelous adventures.

You see, most tourists come to Virac and use it as a base to head off to more known attractions such as Puraran Beach or the nearby – and much famed – Caramoan islands. However, Virac has some wonderful secrets waiting to be enjoyed by many.

• Twin Rock Beach Resort – this is what most people would suggest when you ask them an accommodation suggestion when in Catanduanes. Then again, what’s not to love about the place? It’s located in Barangay Igang, Virac and just as its name suggests, is guarded by two rocks jutting out of the Pacific Ocean. It’s got white sand beaches in between the coves and it’s a great place for surfing, wind surfing and spear fishing.

• Mamangal Beach – with such unspoiled beauty, you can see why tourists come to this destination. Covered in trees that offer much needed shade and blessed with fine white sand, what else could you want for a beach holiday?
• Batag Beach – surrounded by coconut trees and leaning against a hill, you get a feeling like you’re in Chocolate Hills in this place – well, apart from the fact that you’re surrounded by water and not greenery. Just like other beaches in town, the sand here is white and the waters are so pristine – all signs of an inviting beach.
• Balite Beach – although conveniently located in the capital town, the beach has a narrow opening which is quite the challenge to get into. Plus, it’s hidden in the middle of thickets. How’s that for a beach vacation?

FALLS & RIVERS

• Maribina Falls – although not technically in Virac, the road that leads to the falls is located right in the middle of Virac and Bato proper. So, really, it’s a good side trip as this is a really well known falls in the province. The hike to get to the waterfall takes around ten minutes. And since it’s quite well known, you’ll have to deal with the crowds on certain days.

• Sto Domingo River – this body of water is cited as the Cleanest Inland Water in the Bicol Region in 1999. Plunging into the clean and clear water is a favorite of many and one that the bravest of souls cannot pass up.  

One of the most untapped activities in Virac is spelunking. Two of the most known caves in town are:

• Buyo Cave – located in Barangay Buyo, Virac
• Marilima and Talisay Caves

Virac may be mostly used as a gateway to more popular places, but to those adventurous at heart, the town is worth exploring.

If you want convenience, you can simply book a flight with Cebu Pacific and arrive in Virac as fresh as you can be. Hahaha

BATAG BEACH in Virac, Catanduanes (Guide and Story)

It was my first day in Catanduanes. I was lucky to be part of the delegation of content creators and bloggers invited by the Tourism Promotions Board and Catanduanes Tourism to explore the province.

First, we visited the Tourism Office then went straight to the Capitol to witness the Trade Fair showcasing the products of Catanduanes like the popular Abaca .

After that, we traveled for a few kilometers going to Barangay Batag. One of the awesome things about living in Catanduanes is being near to beautiful beaches. The locals must be very lucky that whenever they want to experience the beach life, they can easily choose from many spots in the province’s capital.

Batag beach is just right next to other popular beaches in Virac like Marilima Beach, and Talisoy beach. Its long shore is perfect for that relaxing walk.

The place is filled with coconut trees making the vibe perfect for a nature trip. During a clear day, the famous Mt. Mayon is visible from Batag beach. It’s true because we personally saw the form of the famous volcano although it wasn’t that clear that day.

At the end of the beach is a natural arch perfect for adventurous travelers who love to explore rock formations. The entire beach is suitable for that awesome picture taking with the nice backdrop of nature.

We stayed at the beach for a few more minutes. When we decided to chill at the cottages, I had a chance to chat with a local there. He said that Batag beach is a popular beach destination among locals and that he hopes that more tourists would discover their beaches in Virac and visit the province. Indeed, there are many stunning tourist destinations in the Bicol Region.

Aside from swimming, there are lots to do at Batag beach like snorkeling, skimboarding, camping, and of course, exploring the stunning rock formations and natural arch. There’s no entrance fee at Batag beach, but if you’d like to stay at some cottages for a day trip, there’s a minimal fee of 250 pesos.

If you’re planning to visit Catanduanes soon (after the pandemic), staying at the province’s capital is just enough. There is enough nature and of course, stunning beaches.

How to get to Batag Beach

One of the best ways to go to Batag beach is by taking a tricycle from Virac town proper. Batag Beach is located at Barangay Batag. If you’re going there by car, Google Maps can help. Here’s the map of Batag Beach.

Catanduanes tourist spots and best things to do

Catanduanes used to be called the Land of the Howling Winds because typhoons tend to happen quite often here. Now the island has rebranded itself and became the Happy Island to represent its inhabitants and the warm welcome you’ll get there. Most of Catanduanes tourist spots are still pretty wild and left untouched, perfect if you have the soul of an explorer.

Catanduanes tourist spots:

Binurong view point.

Binurong is probably the most beautiful place in Catanduanes. A 20-minute trek will take you to these amazing cliffs. The place is truly magical, you won’t see many spots like this in the Philippines. The views are breathtaking. You can also go down and swim in a natural pool. It’s so green, you’ll feel transported to a different world.

Entrance fee: 40 pesos – Add 200 for a guide and 20 for the parking. To get there, you can hire a tricycle (around 1500 pesos from Virac, good for 6 persons)

Similar to Binurong, Cagnipa Rolling Hills , in pandan, is becoming another important tourist spot in Catanduanes.

Tampad beach

This beach is famous among locals for its rock formations showing two faces of Jesus. It’s really weird. Apart from the Jesus carvings, the beach is really nice. Perfect for swimming, you can also enjoy some snorkeling near the rocks. The sand is unique, I’ve never seen anything like it in the Philippines. It’s almost orange and really soft.

On the way to the beach, you’ll see the ruins of a bell tower. It was brought there by a storm a couple of years ago. The church is at least 5 kilometers away.

Entrance fee: 50 pesos

Puraran Beach Resort

Puraran Beach is one of the most famous Catanduanes’ tourist spots, especially among surfers. The currents allow you to surf in some parts, and swim in others. The sea is really quiet for the first 50 meters and then the strong waves start. It’s not a spot for beginners as the current is really strong. The beach is also really nice and the surroundings are spectacular.

Entrance fee: 20 pesos – To get there from Virac, take a jeepney to Baras then take a tricycle.

On the beach’s right side, you’ll find Balacay Point , the perfect spot to get a panoramic view. You can drive or trek to it.

Little Batag Beach

Right next to Batag Beach, Little Batag Beach offers quieter surroundings. The beach is really nice with white sand and crystal-clear water. The place is famous for its majestic cliffs and rock formations, carved by the waves. If you want, you can climb the rock to get a nice view of the island and the ocean.

It’s possible to camp there, but you’ll need to bring your own equipment and don’t expect showers. You can reach the beach at low tide from Batag beach or through the village and the forest.

Meteo center

This is the perfect spot to watch the sunset. One of the highest points on the island, you’ll have a really nice panoramic view over Naval and its surroundings.

Talahid Falls

These falls are rarely frequented so you might have the place all to yourself. Located in barangay Cabungahan, you’ll need to trek for about one hour to get to the fall. Talahid falls have two levels, the first one is about 4 meters high and the upper one is around 10 meters high. The place is perfect for a picnic and to take a swim. Bring everything you need, there’s no one there, not even a caretaker.

Closer to Virac and easier to reach, you can also visit Maribina Falls , this 10 meter-high waterfall falls into a clear blue pool, perfect for swimming. You might also want to go to the Santo Domingo River, it’s a good place to swim too.

Luyang Cave

Near the village of Lictin, you’ll find several limestone caves, the most frequented is Luyang Cave. The water there is believed to have healing properties. You’ll need to find a guide, you can ask around in the village or arrange a guide via the tourism office in Virac. The cave is not very complicated to visit, you don’t need to be an expert at spelunking. The path is about 200 meters and easily walkable.

In the 18 th century, the cave used to serve as hideout and shelter when the Moros came to raid the village. One day, the Moros found the entrance of the cave, hidden by branches and leaves. The villagers put fire to it to prevent the Moros from entering the cave. It didn’t work out as planned, the wind blew the wrong way. All the villagers died asphyxiated. Every year a ceremony is held to commemorate the event.

Near Luyang cave you can also check out Mount Cagmasoso , the highest peak on the island. From up there, the view is breathtaking. You can even spot the Mayon Volcano in Albay from up there.

Catanduanes Museum

Located in Virac, in the same building as the tourism office, Catanduanes Museum is home to many local ancient artifacts as well as several objects from the Spanish era. Worth a look if you’re in town.

Closed on weekends – Entrance fee: 50 pesos

Palumbanes Islands

This cluster of islands is perfect if you like island-hopping, the beaches are paradise-like and the seafood delicious. The islands are pretty remote with locals mainly being fishermen.

There are also a lot of trekking opportunities, going up the hills you’ll get an amazing view of the surroundings. A popular thing to do here is to watch the sunset from Binanderahan Hill . There are also a couple of nice reefs near the shore, perfect for snorkeling.

Palumbanes Islands are made up of three main islands: Tignob, Calabagio, and Paringpong. To reach them you’ll need to rent a boat from Caramoran town. If you want to stay overnight bring your own camping equipment, there are no hotels there (yet). Also, bring your own water and food if you don’t eat fish or seafood.

Twin Rock Beach Resort

One of the easiest beaches to access as it’s close to Virac, it’s also one of the best options to swim. The water there is peaceful and you can get inside the water without worries. At low tide, you can reach and climb some of the rock formations. The resort offers several activities such as jet skiing, climbing, and ziplining.

To get there, you’ll need to hire a tricycle from Virac.

Bato Church

Bato Church is one of Catanduanes’ top tourist attractions and is definitely worth a look. Also known as Saint John Baptist Church, the church was built in 1830 and took more than 50 years to finish.

To get there take a jeepney to Bato, then walk to the church.

In Bato, you can also visit Sakahon Beach. You’ll need to take a tricycle to reach it (around 150-200 pesos one way). In the same area, you can also visit Poseidon Rock , also known as Carorian, Maribina falls , and the Bote Lighthouse . The easiest way to do so would be to hire a tricycle from Bato for half a day.

How to get to Catanduanes

By air: There are direct flights from Manila to Virac By bus and ferry: Take a bus bound to Tabaco Port and from there catch a ferry or a fast craft (if the weather is bad I advise taking the ferry, especially if you tend to get seasick).

Where to stay in Catanduanes

Virac is the most convenient location to visit the many Catanduanes tourist spots, but you can also stay in a resort on the beach if you want something nicer. Here are a couple of options:

• In Virac, you can stay at Casa Remedios Bed & Breakfast – The rooms are nice with a garden, they offer breakfast and have a car rental service. They can also help you set you up with a driver to organize a tour.
• On the beach, you can check out Puraran Surf Beach Resort.

Catanduanes tourist spots travel tips and itinerary

• Visiting Catanduanes on your own if you don’t have a car is complicated, the easiest options would be to rent a motorbike,  negotiate with a tricycle driver or go through a tour.
• It’s often windy so don’t forget to pack a light jacket.
• I would advise staying at least two full days to see all of the Catanduanes tourist spots. You can do one day in Bato and around, stopping by the Meteo Center on your way back. The other day you could visit Binurong Viewpoint, Puraran beach, and Talahid or Maribina Falls. If you have two more days, plan a camping trip to Palumbanes Islands.

Catanduanes is part of the Bicol region and is close to some incredibly famous holiday spots, like Caramoan Islands, Misibis Bay, and the Mayon Volcano. So if you are visiting Catanduanes, you can also hop to some of those places.

How to Go to Catanduanes?

Virac is the capital of Catanduanes, so if you are going to see all the tourist attractions in Catanduanes, you must start in Virac . From Manila or any point in the Philippines, some flights are going to Virac. There are also some buses en route to this beautiful place.

Via Air Travel from Manila:

Take a flight going to Virac. In less than an hour, you will arrive in the capital of Catanduanes.

Via Land Travel from Manila:

Go to the bus terminal in Araneta Center , Cubao, near Gateway. Then, take a bus going to Tabaco, Albay . The land trip from Manila to Tabaco takes about 12 hours, so make sure you have enough water and some money for your food.

Then take a cruise ship going to Virac. A regular cruise ship travel takes around 4 hours to reach Virac. You can also ride a fast craft , this is faster, and you will reach San Andres in an hour and a half, then 40 minutes of jeep ride to reach Virac.

1. binurong point.

Binurong Point is among the most famous tourist spots in Catanduanes because of its amazing green landscapes and breathtaking cliffs. Overlooking the Pacific Ocean, you will surely love the view from the top. Make sure you bring water, and remember to wear your hiking shoes because you need to do a little trekking to reach this nature wonder.

By Land : You may also take a 10-hour bus ride or a private car from Manila to Tabaco City in Albay, then take a three-hour RORO ferry to Catanduanes. There are three ferries available. Two of them, the MB Regina Calixta and MV Star Ferry, both depart three times daily: at 7 a.m., 10 a.m., and 1 p.m. from Tabaco City and 6 a.m., 8 a.m., and 1 p.m. from San Andres, Catanduanes. Meanwhile, the MV Silangan V departs Tabaco City at 1 p.m and Virac, Catanduanes, at 7 a.m.
