Everest Mountain Flight Tour Review – Is it Safe? Everything You Need to Know!

When I first visited Nepal, it was for a long weekend break in Kathmandu from Delhi.

Knowing that I wouldn’t have enough time or the fitness to trek to anywhere near base camp and beyond, I just couldn’t leave this Himalayan country without seeing the tallest mountain in the world!

The mighty Mount Everest.

An Everest mountain flight is the perfect option for those that are on time constraints in Nepal or would like to see the mountain range in its entirety from above before/after their long trekking adventure begins.

Seeing the Himalayas from the air was spectacular and captivating, there’s something about these forces of nature that is almost too awesome to behold.

They’re like a siren to many and call you in, some never make it out.

Luckily for me, it was a crystal clear sky kind of day. Not a single cloud in the sky. So, we jetted off to do our round trip of the mountains and meet the big guy.

In this post, I’ll cover if it’s safe, and what it’s like to take an Everest flight from Kathmandu.

The best airline for an everest mountain flight – are everest flights safe.

The first and foremost thing that popped into my head when I was thinking of booking a flight ticket to the mountains was the number of accidents that are reported in Nepal.

I was frantically searching for the stats to make sure that I wasn’t heading into a disaster zone.

But, when searching, I didn’t find much and it’s actually the flights landing at Lukla (for Everest base camp) that have the most issues as it’s a steep curve in a mountain range.

Any reputable airline will not fly over the mountains when it’s bad weather here.

In any mountain country, the weather can change at any moment and those high peaks can easily get shrouded in clouds in a matter of minutes.

The airlines will not fly in bad weather and so you will be told on the day if the flight is going to head out. 

If it’s bad weather, you will be told to come back the next day or refund your money.

By far the safest airline that I found from Everest mountain flight reviews from other travellers was Buddha Air .

This was closely followed by Yeti Airlines. Most offer the same service which is an hour’s flight experience over the mountains.

But, Buddha claims to go slightly closer to the mountains than most and you’re guaranteed a window seat so I decided to pick them.

How much does an Everest mountain flight cost?

The Everest mountain flight experience flight is not cheap, so if you’re on a budget you may want to give it a miss!

In 2020, it was $190 USD (£140) by booking directly online via the Buddha Air website.  

This is the price for foreign nationals but if you’re Nepali or Indian you will be paying half that price around $80/90.

I’m used to tourist attractions having a different price tag for foreigners which is fair enough. But, in Nepal even buses and hotels have different price tags for Nepal and Indian nationals! Crazy.

I’m sure that you may get a different or cheaper price if you book directly through a travel agent who will take you through each airline, what service they provide, and the cost.

I waited until the day before I knew it was going to be a clear morning on the weather forecast and booked online.

This way, I knew I was guaranteed blue skies or at least the odds would be better in my favour than just booking it randomly!

If you’re worried about it being booked up, don’t be. There are around 6/7 flights that go daily and they will put more planes on if people want to fly.

When I was waiting at the airport, there were so many mountain flights taking off in the morning, that I got a bit confused as to which one mine was.

Where does and Everest mountain flight fly from?

All the Everest mountain flights take off at around 6 am in the morning time from Kathmandu to try and beat the cloud cover.

They will all fly from the Tribhuvan International Airport which is located on the East side of the city.

You will need to make sure you have a taxi transfer booked to get you there on time. It’s good to note that this airport is not a 24-hour type of place.

When I arrived in my taxi around 5.30 am, there was a MASSIVE queue of backpackers waiting to get inside the airport.

All had their big bags with trekking gear, boots, pickaxes, and roll mats tied to their bags!

We all had to wait in this tiny little area by the doors to get inside. This works just like a normal airport so before you enter you will need to scan your bags.

Try not to let your little bag for your flight get crushed by the big backpacks being loaded into the scanner.

Checking in for your Everest mountain flight at Kathmandu airport

Like any airline, you will need to check into your Everest mountain flight.

So I headed to the Buddha Air counter in the airport and wait in the ‘queue’. When I arrived there was no one checking people in and so I had to wait in a pretty weird line for a while before the staff arrived for their shift.

You need to bring the printout of your booking confirmation with you for check-in.

I’m sure that your phone confirmation barcode will work just as well. I brought my passport but I don’t think it’s necessary.

Top tips for picking your seat

You won’t be assigned a seat online so if you’re after a certain seat, I would make sure you ask the counter to assign you. 

By far the best seat that you can get is the seat right at the back as you won’t have a big plane wing blocking your view of the mountains!

Knowing which Everest flight is yours

As there are many different airlines that fly to the mountains each morning, you will need to know what flight is your one when boarding.

It’s a small waiting area in the domestic departure lounge but you will find that all the flights which are heading out to Lukla fly first and the airport clears out quite quickly.

Your flight ticket should have a number assigned to it and this is the one to look out for on the TV screens.

You will hear ‘mountain flight’ is called and the number. Although I was told my Everest mountain flight was heading out at 6 am, it was actually almost 7 am before I took to the skies.

I think it goes in order of who booked first, but I can’t be sure.

What does the plane look like for your Everest mountain flight

When we were called, we all piled onto an airport transfer bus and headed out to our plane.

I was a little skeptical as I had head reports of it being a tiny little tin can. But, the plane that I flew on was quite spacious.

It was almost like a normal domestic plane with two seats on either side. But, don’t worry, no one will sit by you on the other seat as it’s a guaranteed window seat!

You’re given a little booklet which has the whole mountain range on there so you can try and match it up to what you’re seeing outside.

The hostesses are also happy to tell you the names of the mountains and of course, point out Everest!

Meeting the pilots and the crew in the cockpit

Each passenger will be asked to come up to the cockpit to have a look at an unaltered view of the mountain range.

The pilot will point out where Mount Everest is. I would make sure you bring your camera and snap like mad as you only get a few minutes!

The Mount Everest experience on your Everest flight!

From my seat, I was struggling to match up which mountain peak was Mount Everest.

Obviously, I knew it was the tallest one but there are just so many, I couldn’t work it out. Then, I was asked to make my way into the cockpit and the pilot explained to me which one was Everest. Then, I finally saw it!

The legendary Mount Everest. Just looking at the size of it and the jagged mountain range surrounding it, makes you wonder about the effort it must take to try and climb it.

So many people have tried, some failed and some never come back. It’s unfathomable. But, I can also see why it draws you in.

For climbers, it’s the ultimate challenge. It takes months, even years of preparation and training. It’s an incredible feeling seeing it.

Is an Everest Flight worth it?

It was a spectacular flight and I was so happy I decided to do it in the end.

I would say that it was well worth the money. When else can you say that you’ve seen the tallest mountain in the entire world!?

Of course, this price is also a fraction of what you would pay to trek to Everest Base Camp or indeed try and attempt Everest!

Plus, if you have no time or hope of trekking like me, this is definitely the way to go :P .

Hi Alisha, no worries! If you fly with Buddha Air they just have a standard plane and everyone gets a window seat. So, I'd book with them as they were great! I went on a clear day and didn't experience any turbulence but I can't say that there wouldn't be turbulence if the weather was bad. Sophie x

It would have been nice to have wi-fi, but I only care about the quality of the flight, which was excellent- smooth takeoff, smooth landing, and very little turbulence. I don't care about food, entertainment, etc.

Everything was incredibly smooth. One of the nicest flights I’ve been on in years. I appreciated that I could bring a carry in and a personal item. Flight attendants were great and plane was clean and comfortable.

I enjoyed the flight with free Wi-Fi. It was nice and comfortable.

Meh. A late flight meant I missed my connections, and a 2pm LAX arrival turned into gettin in after midnight.

It was good until there was a 3 hour delay because there was not any pilots to fly the plane.

Had to change aircraft due to a faulty door. Surprisingly it only caused about an hour and a half of delay. Delta handled this situation as well as can be expected.

Your crew could maybe answer the call bell at least one of the times I pressed it. I pressed it first time with 2.5 hours left in our flight bc my partner was hungry and wanted a sandwich. We finally got the sandwich with 40 mins left in the flight.

The Flight crew didn’t serve us until about 1.5 hours into the flight because of turbulence but after it ended it was fine to move around. They served us water only and snacks and then NEVER, NOT ONE TIME came through to collect trash until right before landing about 1.5 hours later. There was absolutely no need for that. They crew was just standing around talking and visiting with each other and really never tried to see if we might want something besides water or even try to come pick up trash. This is VERY unusual for a Delta flight but it was not what I would have expected for a 4 hour flight.

There was a loud squeaky sound the whole time we were flying.

Great experience overall. Check in at Austin was congested as they only have about 6 check in kiosks, one was broken, and there was a lot of Spring Break travelers.

Bag drop off was slow and annoying. Only 2 agents at the entire delta desk, and no one directing traffic for what line to be in, many confused people slowed down the process. Boarding was fine. Seats in Delta comfort plus were fine. Snacks were great! Definitely a bonus. The entertainment system was awful — old, slow, not responsive, and completely unable to play games due to some kind of error. But on the other hand, thank you to Delta for the free WiFi. That made it better.

United Airlines was fantastic, however, UnderPricer was a nightmare. I got to the airport 4 hours before my flight. We are moving to New Zealand so had quite a bit of baggage (16 checked items) and so wanted to have plenty of time to get everything taken care of properly. When I went to check in they (United) could only find a ticket for me. The 5 tickets for my children were never officially ticketed. I called Underpricer and they told me it was United's fault and United told me that Underpricer just needs to reissue the tickets, but they refused to. I asked the Underpricer agent to transfer me to his supervisor as I was not getting the help I needed. He told me the supervisor was busy but that he would call me back in 30 minutes. 30 minutes came and went with no phone call. After an hour I called Underpricer back but they would not let me talk to the person I had talked to before, just told me that he was talking with the supervisor and technical support. I called again an hour later, was told the same thing. I tried again later, with only about 30 minutes until my flight was scheduled to leave (meaning I had been at the airport for more than 3 hours with my 5 children trying to get ticketed and board the flight). Also, my husband had moved to New Zealand 3 months prior, I haven't seen him in 3 months, my children hadn't seen their dad in 3 months, we were all extremely eager to get on that flight and get to New Zealand. The situation with the tickets did not get resolved until after it was too late to check our luggage and board our flight. We were devastated. My 11 year old son was in tears at not being able to be on his way to see his dad. Thankfully we were rebooked for the next evening, but that night it felt devastating. We'd been at the airport for 4 hours waiting. My in-laws waited with me and then helped me reload all our baggage and took us home to stay with them for the night. On the newly booked flights we could not sit together - my children were spread throughout the plane. So, even though I had paid extra to select our seats after buying my seats from Underpricer only two of us were able to sit together (thankful that my 11 year old wasn't all by himself, but not happy that my 14 & 16 year old daughters were seated by strangers). I really feel that Underpricer should refund me what I paid for the seating ($120 USD). It was a very frustrating situation and I plan on never using Kayak or Underpricer ever again.

Flight was delayed due to the late arrival of the catering truck, which is quite unacceptable. There was a beverage service, but no pretzel, or cookie, or nuts were served in coach.

Flighty delayed on boarding - then group 1 had to check their carry on bags but groups 3 and beyond could carry bags on - very inconvenient for weekend business trip with no checked baggage. Then delayed on the runway - before take off. No communication from pilot on why or how long. Wifi/Entertainment didn't work for 4+ flight. Upon arrival, attendants announced wrong carousel for baggage claim - everyone was waiting at the wrong place for their checked bags. This was a mess united!

Dinner was okay but the breakfast was not eatable on the flight San Francisco to Zurich.

Check in etc was very good. As for on the plane, it was like flying in a freezer. It was so cold, i have flown for years and never been so cold on a plane. Staff on board said its always cold when flying which is a load of rubbish. They wouldnt put any heating on and now i have the flu because of this .

Generally good but there wasn’t any staff available when my luggage didn’t appear at baggage claim in Fresno. It took about half an hour to locate a staff member to open up the locked room where it was being kept.

My husband and I pre-ordered our food, but they did not have my husband’s order, and my cheese plate was very average. I asked for a blanket and was told they don’t carry blankets on domestic routs. The flight was on time and smooth!

There were delays on both ends. It made it less than excellent. This plane was great though

Everything was great except for the wifi was junk. Crew was super friendly and helpful

Attendants were rude. Scowling. Seats were miserable and we paid extra.

Our flight was great we left Kona earlier and got into LAX almost an 1hour earlier as well. LAX AA is in repair so to get out and found our bus to get pick up was a bit confusing.

Plane was good but was delayed. probably not AA fault but caused a 1 hour delay. Seating was cramped.

5 hour flight - full flight - not enough room to use my computer - slightly delayed - Admirals club was excellent quality food, drink made up for flight seating. No food offerred on flight, you ahd to prebook.

We experience delays on departure and connecting flights resulting in 14 hour to our next departure. We were accommodated with a night's stay but was only provided a 12 dollar meals accommodation. The airlines rules state.at least 50 dollars. In any case, it can not make up for the whole day missed on our vacation in Sydney Australia.

I can say I will not be taking this airline again any time soon. Seat were uncomfortable and too tight. Lack of chair screen and little overhead space.

Horrible, first and last time that we use frontier. Kept us in Las Vegas for 8 hours. We boarded original flight at 2 pm right as we were getting ready to leave we were told that plane had issues. Stayed in gate and then after a couple of hours we were told that we were being assigned a new plane and were moved to a different gate. Then after 3 hours they said that the plane had issues and after a while of just being delayed it was cancelled. Thankfully there is southwest that came to rescue. We purchased ticket and left Vegas at 10 pm

Frontier charges 25 for the service of checking in and another 79 for a carry on. Will not take this janky air carrier again.

The trip was unremarkable which is good. Crew was very professional and courteous.

Crew was excellent. Plane was small cramped Airbus A320. Seats were narrow.

Gate agent for Frontier in Sioux Falls was horrible. Some people shouldn't have jobs where they need to work with people. This person tried to control everything and even argued with a Sheriff's Deputy. He seemed to write the law and think he was immune to everything and could do whatever he wanted. What a miserable experience for a lot of people. He even delayed the flight just for on his own actions. The pilots made up the time lost, but why does this person have this job. Apparently nobody cares at Frontier. We do, My wife said she would never fly on Frontier again.

On both our outgoing flight and our return flight, Frontier split up our seats. We were two adults and two small children, one an infant. Both flights were only about half full with full rows of empty seats. Yet, the airline split us up. No, we did not spend the extra $40 per person each way to purchase seat assignments ahead of time. But should we have to do this? If so, then the advertised ticket price was $40 off. What makes this even more egregious is that the plane was not full. So, there was no reason for Frontier to split up our group other than to extract an extra $320. A stewardess even had the nerve to tell me “if you want your family to sit together, I recommend that you purchase seat assignments next time.” On a half empty flight? Ridiculous. We will not be flying Frontier again.

One gate agent in Sioux Falls ruined it for a few people on the flight. It was the usual, that personal item is too large, you are going to have to pay $100 to get it on the flight. One family with a baby were told that they had to have a passport for the baby to get on the flight. Also a Sheriff's Deputy needed to go on the airplane to return a lost cell phone to a minor on the flight. The gate agent would NOT let him go on without a boarding pass. I don't know who this moron was, but the sooner Frontier moves him where he can't interact with people, the better off they will be. Let's just say the deputy did the job that he needed to do and returned the phone to the minor on the plane, even with argument from a gate agent that thought he had way more power than he actually does. Very IRRITATING individual.
