Considerations when choosing a drug for malaria prophylaxis (CDC Yellow Book)

Malaria information for Nepal.

Cases of measles are on the rise worldwide. Travelers are at risk of measles if they have not been fully vaccinated at least two weeks prior to departure, or have not had measles in the past, and travel internationally to areas where measles is spreading.

All international travelers should be fully vaccinated against measles with the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine, including an early dose for infants 6–11 months, according to  CDC’s measles vaccination recommendations for international travel .

Measles (Rubeola) - CDC Yellow Book

Dogs infected with rabies are commonly found in Nepal.

If rabies exposures occur while in Nepal, rabies vaccines are typically not readily available.

Rabies pre-exposure vaccination considerations include whether travelers 1) will be performing occupational or recreational activities that increase risk for exposure to potentially rabid animals and 2) might have difficulty getting prompt access to safe post-exposure prophylaxis.

Please consult with a healthcare provider to determine whether you should receive pre-exposure vaccination before travel.

For more information, see country rabies status assessments .

Learn actions you can take to stay healthy and safe on your trip. Vaccines cannot protect you from many diseases in Nepal, so your behaviors are important.

Eat and drink safely

Food and water standards around the world vary based on the destination. Standards may also differ within a country and risk may change depending on activity type (e.g., hiking versus business trip). You can learn more about safe food and drink choices when traveling by accessing the resources below.

  • Choose Safe Food and Drinks When Traveling
  • Water Treatment Options When Hiking, Camping or Traveling
  • Global Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH)
  • Avoid Contaminated Water During Travel

You can also visit the Department of State Country Information Pages for additional information about food and water safety.

Prevent bug bites

Bugs (like mosquitoes, ticks, and fleas) can spread a number of diseases in Nepal. Many of these diseases cannot be prevented with a vaccine or medicine. You can reduce your risk by taking steps to prevent bug bites.

What can I do to prevent bug bites?

  • Cover exposed skin by wearing long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and hats.
  • Use an appropriate insect repellent (see below).
  • Use permethrin-treated clothing and gear (such as boots, pants, socks, and tents). Do not use permethrin directly on skin.
  • Stay and sleep in air-conditioned or screened rooms.
  • Use a bed net if the area where you are sleeping is exposed to the outdoors.

What type of insect repellent should I use?

  • FOR PROTECTION AGAINST TICKS AND MOSQUITOES: Use a repellent that contains 20% or more DEET for protection that lasts up to several hours.
  • Picaridin (also known as KBR 3023, Bayrepel, and icaridin)
  • Oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE) or para-menthane-diol (PMD)
  • 2-undecanone
  • Always use insect repellent as directed.

What should I do if I am bitten by bugs?

  • Avoid scratching bug bites, and apply hydrocortisone cream or calamine lotion to reduce the itching.
  • Check your entire body for ticks after outdoor activity. Be sure to remove ticks properly.

What can I do to avoid bed bugs?

Although bed bugs do not carry disease, they are an annoyance. See our information page about avoiding bug bites for some easy tips to avoid them. For more information on bed bugs, see Bed Bugs .

For more detailed information on avoiding bug bites, see Avoid Bug Bites .

Stay safe outdoors

If your travel plans in Nepal include outdoor activities, take these steps to stay safe and healthy during your trip.

  • Stay alert to changing weather conditions and adjust your plans if conditions become unsafe.
  • Prepare for activities by wearing the right clothes and packing protective items, such as bug spray, sunscreen, and a basic first aid kit.
  • Consider learning basic first aid and CPR before travel. Bring a travel health kit with items appropriate for your activities.
  • If you are outside for many hours in heat, eat salty snacks and drink water to stay hydrated and replace salt lost through sweating.
  • Protect yourself from UV radiation : use sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15, wear protective clothing, and seek shade during the hottest time of day (10 a.m.–4 p.m.).
  • Be especially careful during summer months and at high elevation. Because sunlight reflects off snow, sand, and water, sun exposure may be increased during activities like skiing, swimming, and sailing.
  • Very cold temperatures can be dangerous. Dress in layers and cover heads, hands, and feet properly if you are visiting a cold location.

Stay safe around water

  • Swim only in designated swimming areas. Obey lifeguards and warning flags on beaches.
  • Practice safe boating—follow all boating safety laws, do not drink alcohol if driving a boat, and always wear a life jacket.
  • Do not dive into shallow water.
  • Do not swim in freshwater in developing areas or where sanitation is poor.
  • Avoid swallowing water when swimming. Untreated water can carry germs that make you sick.
  • To prevent infections, wear shoes on beaches where there may be animal waste.

Keep away from animals

Most animals avoid people, but they may attack if they feel threatened, are protecting their young or territory, or if they are injured or ill. Animal bites and scratches can lead to serious diseases such as rabies.

Follow these tips to protect yourself:

  • Do not touch or feed any animals you do not know.
  • Do not allow animals to lick open wounds, and do not get animal saliva in your eyes or mouth.
  • Avoid rodents and their urine and feces.
  • Traveling pets should be supervised closely and not allowed to come in contact with local animals.
  • If you wake in a room with a bat, seek medical care immediately. Bat bites may be hard to see.

All animals can pose a threat, but be extra careful around dogs, bats, monkeys, sea animals such as jellyfish, and snakes. If you are bitten or scratched by an animal, immediately:

  • Wash the wound with soap and clean water.
  • Go to a doctor right away.
  • Tell your doctor about your injury when you get back to the United States.

Consider buying medical evacuation insurance. Rabies is a deadly disease that must be treated quickly, and treatment may not be available in some countries.

Reduce your exposure to germs

Follow these tips to avoid getting sick or spreading illness to others while traveling:

  • Wash your hands often, especially before eating.
  • If soap and water aren’t available, clean hands with hand sanitizer (containing at least 60% alcohol).
  • Don’t touch your eyes, nose, or mouth. If you need to touch your face, make sure your hands are clean.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) when coughing or sneezing.
  • Try to avoid contact with people who are sick.
  • If you are sick, stay home or in your hotel room, unless you need medical care.

Avoid sharing body fluids

Diseases can be spread through body fluids, such as saliva, blood, vomit, and semen.

Protect yourself:

  • Use latex condoms correctly.
  • Do not inject drugs.
  • Limit alcohol consumption. People take more risks when intoxicated.
  • Do not share needles or any devices that can break the skin. That includes needles for tattoos, piercings, and acupuncture.
  • If you receive medical or dental care, make sure the equipment is disinfected or sanitized.

Know how to get medical care while traveling

Plan for how you will get health care during your trip, should the need arise:

  • Carry a list of local doctors and hospitals at your destination.
  • Review your health insurance plan to determine what medical services it would cover during your trip. Consider purchasing travel health and medical evacuation insurance.
  • Carry a card that identifies, in the local language, your blood type, chronic conditions or serious allergies, and the generic names of any medications you take.
  • Some prescription drugs may be illegal in other countries. Call Nepal’s embassy to verify that all of your prescription(s) are legal to bring with you.
  • Bring all the medicines (including over-the-counter medicines) you think you might need during your trip, including extra in case of travel delays. Ask your doctor to help you get prescriptions filled early if you need to.

Many foreign hospitals and clinics are accredited by the Joint Commission International. A list of accredited facilities is available at their website ( www.jointcommissioninternational.org ).

In some countries, medicine (prescription and over-the-counter) may be substandard or counterfeit. Bring the medicines you will need from the United States to avoid having to buy them at your destination.

Malaria is a risk in some parts of Nepal. If you are going to a risk area, fill your malaria prescription before you leave, and take enough with you for the entire length of your trip. Follow your doctor’s instructions for taking the pills; some need to be started before you leave.

Select safe transportation

Motor vehicle crashes are the #1 killer of healthy US citizens in foreign countries.

In many places cars, buses, large trucks, rickshaws, bikes, people on foot, and even animals share the same lanes of traffic, increasing the risk for crashes.

Be smart when you are traveling on foot.

  • Use sidewalks and marked crosswalks.
  • Pay attention to the traffic around you, especially in crowded areas.
  • Remember, people on foot do not always have the right of way in other countries.

Riding/Driving

Choose a safe vehicle.

  • Choose official taxis or public transportation, such as trains and buses.
  • Ride only in cars that have seatbelts.
  • Avoid overcrowded, overloaded, top-heavy buses and minivans.
  • Avoid riding on motorcycles or motorbikes, especially motorbike taxis. (Many crashes are caused by inexperienced motorbike drivers.)
  • Choose newer vehicles—they may have more safety features, such as airbags, and be more reliable.
  • Choose larger vehicles, which may provide more protection in crashes.

Think about the driver.

  • Do not drive after drinking alcohol or ride with someone who has been drinking.
  • Consider hiring a licensed, trained driver familiar with the area.
  • Arrange payment before departing.

Follow basic safety tips.

  • Wear a seatbelt at all times.
  • Sit in the back seat of cars and taxis.
  • When on motorbikes or bicycles, always wear a helmet. (Bring a helmet from home, if needed.)
  • Avoid driving at night; street lighting in certain parts of Nepal may be poor.
  • Do not use a cell phone or text while driving (illegal in many countries).
  • Travel during daylight hours only, especially in rural areas.
  • If you choose to drive a vehicle in Nepal, learn the local traffic laws and have the proper paperwork.
  • Get any driving permits and insurance you may need. Get an International Driving Permit (IDP). Carry the IDP and a US-issued driver's license at all times.
  • Check with your auto insurance policy's international coverage, and get more coverage if needed. Make sure you have liability insurance.
  • Avoid using local, unscheduled aircraft.
  • If possible, fly on larger planes (more than 30 seats); larger airplanes are more likely to have regular safety inspections.
  • Try to schedule flights during daylight hours and in good weather.

Medical Evacuation Insurance

If you are seriously injured, emergency care may not be available or may not meet US standards. Trauma care centers are uncommon outside urban areas. Having medical evacuation insurance can be helpful for these reasons.

Traffic flows on the left side of the road in Nepal.

  • Always pay close attention to the flow of traffic, especially when crossing the street.
  • LOOK RIGHT for approaching traffic.

Maintain personal security

Use the same common sense traveling overseas that you would at home, and always stay alert and aware of your surroundings.

Before you leave

  • Research your destination(s), including local laws, customs, and culture.
  • Monitor travel advisories and alerts and read travel tips from the US Department of State.
  • Enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) .
  • Leave a copy of your itinerary, contact information, credit cards, and passport with someone at home.
  • Pack as light as possible, and leave at home any item you could not replace.

While at your destination(s)

  • Carry contact information for the nearest US embassy or consulate .
  • Carry a photocopy of your passport and entry stamp; leave the actual passport securely in your hotel.
  • Follow all local laws and social customs.
  • Do not wear expensive clothing or jewelry.
  • Always keep hotel doors locked, and store valuables in secure areas.
  • If possible, choose hotel rooms between the 2nd and 6th floors.

Healthy Travel Packing List

Use the Healthy Travel Packing List for Nepal for a list of health-related items to consider packing for your trip. Talk to your doctor about which items are most important for you.

Why does CDC recommend packing these health-related items?

It’s best to be prepared to prevent and treat common illnesses and injuries. Some supplies and medicines may be difficult to find at your destination, may have different names, or may have different ingredients than what you normally use.

If you are not feeling well after your trip, you may need to see a doctor. If you need help finding a travel medicine specialist, see Find a Clinic . Be sure to tell your doctor about your travel, including where you went and what you did on your trip. Also tell your doctor if you were bitten or scratched by an animal while traveling.

If your doctor prescribed antimalarial medicine for your trip, keep taking the rest of your pills after you return home. If you stop taking your medicine too soon, you could still get sick.

Malaria is always a serious disease and may be a deadly illness. If you become ill with a fever either while traveling in a malaria-risk area or after you return home (for up to 1 year), you should seek immediate medical attention and should tell the doctor about your travel history.

For more information on what to do if you are sick after your trip, see Getting Sick after Travel .

Traveling to Nepal is an adventure that never fails to showcase the natural and cultural beauty of this world. Travelers are attracted by the country's immense Himalayan mountain views, jungles full of wildlife, beautiful golden temples, charming hill villages, ancient cities, and friendly people.

Nepal is a landlocked country in the Himalayas between China and India. The most popular things to do in Nepal include trekking, mountaineering, mountain appreciation/photography, and visiting temples. Nepal has a very vibrant culture that is a mixture of Buddhist and Hindu values, which can be seen in the abundance of temples and in the everyday life of the local people.

Nepal Travel Visas and Travel Restrictions

Entry policy: From March 14, 2022, Nepal has eased its entry requirements. All international visitors can go to Nepal whether vaccinated or not.

Visa policy: Most foreigners need a tourist visa to enter Nepal. However, Nepal makes getting a tourist visa quite simple by offering a visa on arrival option for Kathmandu's airport as well as all land crossings. The visa on arrival process is very quick and simple. It requires travelers to fill out a short form, which can also be filled out online 15 days before arrival to make the process even faster.

Best Times to Visit Nepal

Nepal's climate is divided into two seasons: the rainy season (May to August) and the dry season (September to April).

The best time to visit Nepal is during the "autumn" post-monsoon months (September to November) as the skies are generally clear and the views are spectacular, the visibility in the mountains is at its best and trekking conditions are great around Everest and Annapurna. Hotel prices and travel costs during this time are higher than average, and the tourist sites are a bit more crowded than usual. With Asia Highlights , you enjoy 100% refund of any payments made to China Highlights prior to 3 weeks before departure ( detail⇒ ).

Another good time to visit Nepal is in the "spring" pre-monsoon months (February to April) when the weather at high elevation is cool and good for trekking. Conditions are often less clear this time of year due to crop burning in the Kathmandu Valley.

"Summer" in Nepal is the monsoon season (April to September). The monsoon rains make for super blooms of beautiful Himalayan flowers, but also cause landslides and dangerous/unpleasant travel conditions (mud, leeches) throughout the country. Low prices match inconvenient travel opportunities.

Temperatures of the "winter" mid-dry-season (December to February) in Nepal often get below freezing in high elevation areas of the country, which can make for difficult trekking conditions.

Conversely, lowland areas such as Kathmandu Valley can be as warm as 20°C (68°F) in the winter months.

Regarded as a trekkers' paradise, the two most popular places to go in Nepal are Mount Everest and Kathmandu, there is much more of this beautiful country to explore on foot outside these two destinations.

1. Kathmandu — Capital, Temples and Shrines

Kathmandu is the capital city of Nepal and the place where most travelers begin their journey. This is a city with chaotic narrow streets that are packed full of gorgeous temples and shrines. Explore the timeless cultural and artistic heritage to learn more about Kathmandu. Include the maze of shrines in the city center, and then wander around the shopping street (Thamel), which is full of handicrafts and great food.

From Thamel Street, you can walk to Durbar Square (an ancient palace), where the city's king was crowned. Spend a half day to observe the grand architecture there, and then have a cup of coffee and rest in the nearby restaurants or shops.

2. Pokhara — Natural Beauty and Adventure

Pokhara is a lakeside city near the Annapurna region. This city has long been famous for its spectacular scenery and abundance of adventure activities. There you can relax while taking in the views of mountains over bobbing boats on Fewa Lake, or participate in mountain biking, paragliding, and trekking.

Pohkara is the starting point for many famous treks, including the challenging Annapurna Base Camp Trek. The two-day Poon Hill Trek offers visitors incredible views of Annapurna in the distance, and the Annapurna Circuit Trek is a less demanding hike that can be taken at your own pace.

Pokhara is also home to the famous World Peace Pagoda, where you can have a panoramic view of the Annapurna range, Pokhara city, and Fewa Lake.

3. Patan — Ancient City, UNESCO World Heritage Sites

Patan, also known as Lalitpur — 'The City of Beauty', has a history dating back to the year 250 BC. Although Patan is only around 5 kilometers (3 miles) from Kathmandu, the city was a fiercely independent kingdom for most of its history and has managed to retain its unique culture.

The architecture of this entire city is based on the principles of the Buddhist Wheel of Righteousness and Patan has long been a melting pot of Hindu and Buddhist beliefs.

While you are in this ancient city make sure to explore the gorgeous temples, royal palaces, and statues of Durbar Square, and check out Patan Museum. This city is definitely worth a visit.

4. Nagarkot — Panoramic Himalayan Views

Nagarkot is located close to Bhaktapur and is well-known for its stunning views of the surrounding Himalayas. There are eight ranges that can be seen from this small mountainous town: Everest, Annapurna, Manaslu, Ganesh Himal, Lantang, Jugal, Rolwaling, and Numbur. You can also have a panoramic view of the Kathmandu Valley from this small town.

The town itself is surrounded by dense pine forests and is a quiet and peaceful place full of boutique and luxury hotels with mountain views.

Try to catch the dreamy views of sunrise and sunset on a clear day, the town also offers some short treks and mountain biking trails.

5. Chitwan National Park — Nature, Wildlife

If you want to enjoy the natural beauty and wildlife of Nepal, then Chitwan National Park should be on your list. As one of the most popular national parks in Asia, Chitwan National Park is the best place to observe Asia's rare and endangered species, such as the Bengal tiger and one-horned rhinoceros.

Besides Bengal tigers and rhinoceroses, there are elephants, leopards, Indian bison, and sloth bears to discover in the park. If you want to spend more than a day in the park, you can live in luxury lodging at the edge of the park, or in the affordable accommodation in a nearby village.

How to Get To and Around Nepal

Getting to nepal.

The best way to get to Nepal is by flight. There are direct flights available to Kathmandu from New York, Dallas, San Francisco, and Los Angeles in the US and from London, Paris, Munich, Frankfurt, and Istanbul in Europe. To make the trip to Nepal more affordable, travelers can head to India first and then fly to Kathmandu from New Delhi.

Getting Around in Nepal

The main transport from one city to another in Nepal includes planes, buses, and private vehicle. Trains are not available in Nepal.

Because of Nepal's mountainous terrain and poor infrastructure, traveling by bus around Nepal is often draining, and the bus may stop to pick up passengers everywhere too.

The best way to travel from one Nepali city to another is often by private car or jeep, which is more comfortable and faster than traveling by bus. It allows passengers the option of being picked up directly from their hotel and dropped off directly at their next hotel without the hassle of booking taxis and buying bus tickets.

By plane: Flying is another good option for traveling across Nepal. Most internal flights start or end in Kathmandu. The cities of Pokhara, Bharatpur, and Siddharthanagar all have airports. One problem with traveling by plane in Nepal is that delays and flight cancellations are very common due to adverse weather conditions like heavy rain, thick fog, strong winds, etc. (Airports in Nepal don't have the latest technology and so planes rely on instrumental landing systems.)

Connecting with Other South Asian Countries

There are flights from Kathmandu to other main cities in South Asian countries, including India, Bhutan, and Thailand. Most of our clients visit India before their trip to Nepal. They can fly to Kathmandu from Delhi, Varanasi, Mumbai, and Kolkata. Delhi offers the most flight options at the best prices.

From India, it is also possible to cross into Nepal overland. This journey requires taking a bus or train to the India-Nepal border. Trains from Delhi to the Sonauli border crossing often take around 14 hours.

Travel Costs for Nepal

For travelers from Europe and America, Nepal is the most affordable destination in South Asia. General speaking, if you are looking for a comfortable trip (mid-range hotels) in the top destinations in Nepal, it will cost between 10,000 and 12,500 Nepal rupees (US$80–100) per day per person.

The following are some cost estimates for different travel styles:

  • For backpackers, the budget needed is around 30–50 USD/day per person (hostels, street food, tuk-tuks, rickshaws).
  • For a medium budget, Nepal costs around 80–100 USD per day per person (3/4-star hotels, sit-down restaurants, taxies).
  • For a higher standard and a more refined experience, US$100–150 per day per person is needed (4/5-star hotels, nice meals, private guide, and transfers).

Nepal hasn’t had an easy time with Covid-19 over the past couple of years, but today the picture is much more optimistic. Infection rates have declined dramatically and most of the population is now fully vaccinated. There is no lockdown in place and life is largely back to normal.

Are tourists allowed back to Nepal?

Unvaccinated travelers must provide proof of a negative PCR coronavirus test taken no more than 72 hours before travel (Gene Expert or True NAAT tests also accepted). Rapid antigen tests may also be required at immigration.

All travelers, regardless of vaccination status, must have travel insurance covering health, crisis or rescue for the duration of the trip and proof of accommodation in Nepal.

(For departure, a PCR test is only necessary if your airline or destination country requires it.)

Due to this Nepal imposed several travel restrictions for international travelers in December 2021 however the situation is not worst now. Immigration of Nepal has now made much easy for the international Visitors and travelers willing to travel to Nepal. In January 2022, Nepal Government has officially updated its entry protocol for all international travelers.

As per the latest decision, here are the essential documents travelers must show at the immigration office of Nepal:

  • Valid Passport (The travelers' passport must have at least six months validity)
  • Vaccination Certificate (All travelers must be vaccinated at least 14 days before your travel date)

Note: For the travelers travelling with the children below five years, there is no restriction that Vaccine certificate or RT-PCR report is required. However the children from five to 18 years do not need the vaccine certificate but must submit an RT-PCR report and this is mandatorily.

As per the new travel guidelines published by the officer of Immigration of Nepal. the fully vaccinated travelers can easily get the Nepal VISA on arrival at the land or air entry point by submitting the aforementioned documents. Also, the traveler who is fully vaccinated does not require to stay in quarantine.

However, travelers who are not fully vaccinated cannot obtain visas on arrival. Instead, they must get their visa from Nepal's Diplomatic Mission before flying to Nepal. In addition to that, they are also required to stay in a 5-day hotel quarantine. After completing the 5-days quarantine period, the travelers should take the RT-PCR test. If and only the results are negative, they are free to continue their travel around Nepal.

Reasons To Visit Nepal in 2022

Reasons To Visit Nepal in 2022

Nepal is a small, picturesque country hidden in the Himalayas and located between India and south of the Autonomous Region of Tibet.

What makes Nepal so special is that it exhibits an array of geographic features ranging from lush, dense forests to cold, unbearable high mountains. In fact, this tiny country is home to the world's highest peak, Mt. Everest at an incredible height of 8,848 m.

From a spiritual point of view, Nepal is of great significance to both the Hindus and Buddhists. All of this makes Nepal an extremely exciting and interesting place to visit at least once. If you especially love to travel, Nepal must be on your bucket list.

The country heavily depends on tourism and the government has been running various Visit Nepal programs since 1998 to entice more tourists to come to this amazing place.  The year 2011 also saw a Visit Nepal program and was pretty successful in bringing more tourist than ever.

However, Nepal was devastated by the 2015 earthquake, resulting in significant loss of life and property.

This prompted the Government of Nepal (GoN) to organize another campaign - Visit Nepal 2020 . But fate had something else - the world-wide pandemic of corona virus.

To promote tourism and provide better infrastructure on the hospitality sector, the Government of Nepal is organizing more international flights as well as more airbuses to transport tourists to Nepal from all over the world.

The Hotel industry will also be greatly enhanced with significant improvement to accommodate more tourists will all the required facilities.

Since Himalayan Trekkers have their base in Nepal, we know the phenomenal places to visit even on a tight budget. From unexplored lands to Nepal's most popular destinations, we know the secret hidden gems that can make the trip exclusive. And when it comes to hospitality, we guarantee the best for our customers.

  • A Noble Reason to Visit Nepal in 2022

Nepal is a picturesque place that is astonishingly beautiful with beautiful mountains, lakes, glaciers. The attraction not only lies in rich geographical variation but also among the courteous people and rich culture of the place.

Nepal was globally recognized globally back in the 1950s when Tensing Norgay Sherpa and Edmund Hillary first step their foot on the summit of Mt. Everest.

The Visit Nepal 2020 Campaign is also devised as a method to introduce more people to the country. The MoCTCA in Nepal has already started a campaign in different places around the world to promote Visit Nepal 2022.

The GoN has included the major attractions in Nepal and is also focusing on untouched destinations such as the Khaptad Region and the Rara Lake Region.

  • Major Activities in Nepal in 2022

Almost all the activities from spiritual, heritage tours, hiking, wildlife safari, river rafting, mountaineering, bungee jumping, or be it traversing the landscape on a mountain bike or a motorcycle, you can find the activity which you likely to be fit in.

All your activities have the added bonus of passing through spectacular scenery.

Adventurous Climbing & Trek Activities

The most popular attraction of Nepal is the high and lofty Himalayan ranges that stretch from west to east and occupy the entire Northern region throughout the country. According to geologists, the Himalayas are a relatively younger range of mountains and are still growing.

Thus, some of the highest peaks in the world could be found in the Himalayan range such as Mt. Everest, Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, Langtang. In fact, 8 out of the 14, highest peaks above 8000m plus peaks are located in Nepal alone.

There are above 1,300 peaks in Nepal which are over 6000 m. Langtang region along with Everest and Annapurna attracts the greatest number of tourists and adventurers alike. The Mera peak and Island peak situated in the Khumbu region is a great place to climb if you are fond of adventurous climbs.

Looking at the world from such higher heights and altitudes truly has a different kick attached to it. You will pass through lush forests, steep slopes, thick layers of ice, and so on as you go on a trekking expedition.

Thrilling Water Activities

The Chure region comprises the youngest mountains in Nepal and contributes to major of the 6,000 or so fast-flowing freshwater rivulets and rivers that cut through Nepal which are formed by melted glaciers. There are three main river systems in Nepal - Koshi, Gandaki, and Karnali.

These fast-flowing rivers apart from generating hydroelectric power, are very suitable for different kinds of water sports and adventurous activities such as rafting, kayaking, canoeing, and so on.

Rich Cultural Essence

Nepal is a country of contrasts, with incredible natural wonders coexisting with a vibrant culture and a deep understanding of history. Further, it is also the source for the growth and development of different religious disciplines such as Buddhism and Hinduism.

There are accounts about Nepal and its surrounding regions recorded in many religious texts. Nonetheless, Nepal has a rich culture to offer for visitors to explore!

There are as many as 10 UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Nepal in Kathmandu Valley, Lumbini, Chitwan National Park, Sagarmatha National Park, and so on.

The Monkey Temple (Swayambhunath Stupa), the Pashupatinath temple, the Bouddhanath Stupa, and the Changunarayan Temple are excellent heritage sites in Kathmandu that hold much religious significance.

Lumbini, the birthplace of Lord Buddha also has lots of attractions to offer and welcomes tourists as well as devotees alike every year. The Ashoka Pillar in the Lumbini Garden built way back in 250 BC is a major attraction in this place with artistic temples and monasteries abound this place.

One of the temples, the Mayadevi Temple has very intricate architectural work and was built to commemorate Lord Buddha’s mother.

Mayadevi Temple in Lumbini

The Pushkarni Pool is also an enduring sight where the King and Queen from the royal palace used to take their baths in front of the Mayadevi Temple. The Lumbini museum also contains important artifacts that are very charming and has an impressive history attached.

Nepal is a multi-cultural nation and boasts 125 different ethnic communities mutually co-existing. There are many trails that take you on a journey through the many cultural locations. You can easily plan a trek through these routes to immerse yourself in a memorable journey within yourself.

Sherpa Cultural Heritage around Everest and Gurung Cultural Heritage around the Annapurna circuit are the two most notable of these cultural hotspots. The Magar Cultural Heritage that comes en route the Guerrilla trek is also a notable hotspot.

The Tibetan Buddhist Culture Heritage located in the Shey Valley and the Dolpo Region is a picturesque location enriched in peace and deep understanding.

Acceptance & Diversity of Religion

The majority of Nepalese people follow Hinduism, but there is also a strong Buddhist influence, as well as some Kiratism, Islam, and Christianity (although relatively in smaller portions).

Traveling around various parts of Nepal and learning about each region's traditions, diversity of faith, multiculturalism is an enlightening experience that demonstrates what and why a special place it is to visit.

Nepal is also well-known for its religious tolerance. In spite of having an influence of several religions, none of the people discriminate against each other on basis of religion instead they live in harmony celebrating each other’s festivals.

Historical Significance

Nepal is a mythical land. Although there is very little known about the early history of Nepal, it dates way back. The people of the Gopal Dynasty were the ones who came to Nepal and started the settlement, then there were Mahishpal, Kirate, Licchavi, Simroun, Thakuri, Malla, and Shah Dynasty.

The first written history of Nepal is only observed from Kirate Dynasty. History has further progressed which can be witnessed in the architecture, palaces, museums, durbar squares, and temples in Nepal. Different dynasties and rulers are represented in each palace and museum. Furthermore, the legends of the great Gorkha and brave Gorkhalis are immaculate.

Peace & Serenity

As the land of Lord Buddha and guided by his preaching, Nepal is regarded as the sacred place offering peace and tranquility. Farther away from the hustle, Nepal is spiritual and ideal for peaceful reflection, whether you're trekking, temple-hopping, or looking out over a still, glass-like lake.

Even the most adrenaline-pumping adventures will provide some serenity with its unrivaled natural beauty.

Nepal is a very small country and covers an area of only 147,181 square km. In spite of its very small size, Nepal boasts of featuring all the climatic zones that could be found on earth. It extends from an elevation of just 59 m above mean sea level up to 8,848 m (Mt. Everest), which is physically the highest point in this world.

The climatic regions in Nepal are divided into Terai (hot, torrid climate), Hilly (temperate climate), and Himalayan (frigid, alpine climatic conditions). Through this huge variation, there exist 118 different kinds of ecosystems that abound in 160 species of animals. 852 species of birds, and 284 different kinds of flowering plants.

A Plethora of Wildlife

Woodpecker birds in tree Kathmandu

Since Nepal has a diverse geography that includes dense forests it also attracts a diverse array of wildlife.  The jungles are enriched in various kinds of flora intermingled with exotic fauna. Watching birds and endangered animal species in their natural habitat is one of the main attractions that the GoN is offering in Visit Nepal 2022.

Chitwan National Park, Bardiya National Park, Suklaphanta National Park, and Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve are rich in natural beauty and could be a grand experience.

Besides, the forests in Nepal are also the habitat of wild animal species such as the Bengal tiger, one-horned rhino, sloth bears, Asiatic elephants, spotted deer, wild buffalo, and much more.

In the higher altitudes, you will find animals such as snow leopard, blue sheep, Himalayan black bear, and so on, whose physiology is developed to withstand the intense cold conditions.

The diverse geography also ensures a diverse climate in different parts of Nepal that have allowed different species of birds to thrive. These include local birds as well as migratory bird species that flock to the forests and water bodies of Nepal in abundance.

The national parks and wildlife reserves mentioned above are also rich in a variety of bird populations. In fact, Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve is referred to as the Capital of Bird Watching.

Himalayan bird species such as the Lophophorus, the national bird of Nepal could be found if you go on a bird-watching trail in the Everest region. Taudaha Lake, Nagarjuna Lake, and Godavari Lake in Kathmandu are impressive freshwater bodies that attract a considerable bird population. In short, if you are an ardent bird watcher, Nepal is the place for you to be to capture some captivating shots.

Safety & Security

Since Nepal is politically secure, crime isn't a big concern for travelers. While there are some common precautions to take, such as not drinking the tap water and being as vigilant as you would in other cases, Nepal is a reasonably safe destination.

Furthermore, you are being properly looked out after in Nepal. Despite the challenging hikes, the routes are clear, while guides are available, and any risks, such as experience level and altitude sickness, are things you can prepare for beforehand.

Exotic Cuisine & Hospitality

You can experience great hospitality in every part of the country. Nepalese people are without a doubt the most kind and welcoming people you will ever encounter. In Nepal, the traditional manners and hospitality are still preserved, so you will be welcomed and respected by all Nepalese people.

With several diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds, Nepalese cuisine is unavoidably delightful. Although Nepal's cuisine is heavily influenced by its neighbors, China and India, the country makes it unique, and relatively healthier dishes than other southeast Asian countries.

The must-try dishes include Dhal bat (lentil or chicken curry with boiled rice, vegetables, pickles, and roti bread) and famous Momo (Nepal’s version of dumplings).

Affordability

Nepal is a relatively inexpensive destination for travelers, with hotel rooms for less than $20 (and guesthouses for as little as $5), food for a day for $10, and economical experiences and activities. However, there are more expensive options, such as top hotels, which cost about $ 200, but even with these, you'll get one of the best rooms. For a really pleasant stay in the countryside, you shouldn't expect to pay more than $40 per night.

Volunteering Potentials

Since Nepal is still an underdeveloped nation, there are numerous volunteer opportunities for you to participate and assist. Nepal is a place where you can genuinely travel for a charitable reason. You will gain incredible perspectives and form special relationships with people from all walks of life, all of which have the power to change your entire outlook on life.

All in all, there are so many things that Nepal has to offer. To engage tourists more in the wildlife and raw beauty of Nepal, various adventure sports activities such as river bridging, rappelling, bungee jumping, have also been started in Nepal.

All of these will be in a full boost in Visit Nepal 2022 that is surely going to give you an immersive experience into the natural and cultural bounty of Nepal. To ensure that you have covered all your bucket-list locations in Nepal, do connect with Himalayan Trekkers.

Safest Countries in the World 2024

Iceland has been the safest country in the world for the 14th year in a row, according to the Global Peace Index.

The Nordic countries of Europe (Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Iceland, and Finland) rank among the 25 safest globally, most of them also being among the top 10 happiest nations worldwide.

Common attributes of the world's safest countries include high levels of wealth, social welfare, education, effective criminal justice systems, and positive government-citizen relationships.

The Global Peace Index (GPI) ranks the safest and most peaceful countries in the world. This report is published annually by the Institute for Economics and Peace, which defines itself as "an independent, non-partisan, non-profit organization dedicated to shifting the world's focus to peace as a positive, achievable and tangible measure of human wellbeing and progress." The report researches countries to determine which are the safest and which are the most dangerous .

A total of 163 countries are featured in the GPI report, which ranks each country's level of safety or danger based upon 23 different indicators. The indicators used to compile the GPI include the number of internal and external violent conflicts, level of distrust, political instability, potential for terrorist acts, number of homicides, and military expenditures as a percentage of GDP. These indicators are grouped into three broad categories—Ongoing International Conflict, Societal Safety and Security, and Militarization—and a score is calculated for each of the 163 nations featured in the report. The lower the score, the higher the nation is ranked in terms of safety.

Top 15 Safest Countries in the World (Global Peace Index — lower is better):

The United States ranked 129th in the Global Peace Ranking for 2022. The United States' ranking has fallen every year since 2016, a drop usually attributed to a decrease in life satisfaction, rising political division, and an increasing wealth gap.

Is the World Becoming More or Less Safe?

According to the 2022 GPI report, the world has become less safe over the past 14 years, with per-country scores deteriorating by 3.2% on average. The report further notes that safety and peacefulness have decreased for eleven of the past fourteen years. For example, global peace declined by 0.3% overall between the 2021 and 2022 GPI reports. While safety improved in 90 countries, it dropped in 71 countries (and remained stable in two), for a net loss.

The 2022 report also states that declines tend to happen more swiftly and precipitously than do improvements, and pointed out that the most significant deterioration occurred in countries in conflict, such as Russia , Ukraine , Guinea , Burkina Faso , and Haiti . Europe remained the most peaceful region in the world, a position it has held for all the 16 years in which the Global Peace Index has existed.

World peace also decreased between the 2020 and 2021 reports, though by a much smaller margin of 0.07%, with 87 countries improving and 73 deteriorating. The COVID-19 crisis and increasing tensions among major world powers were cited as two main causes for the decrease. A comparison of the 2020 and 2019 reports, to step back a year, reveals a total of 81 countries growing more peaceful and 80 deteriorating. The average country score deteriorated by 0.34%.

The Safest Continent in the World

A majority of the top 25 safest countries are European countries. Most notable are the Nordic countries of Europe. Norway , Sweden , Denmark , Iceland , and Finland are not only among Europe's safest countries , they are among the top 25 safest countries anywhere on Earth. This region is thus considered the safest in the world, with a homicide rate of 0.8 incidents per 100,000 inhabitants. These five Nordic countries are all in the top 10 happiest countries in the world as well. The second-safest region among the top 25 safest countries is Asia . Both Europe and Asia have the world’s lowest homicide rates of 3 or fewer per 100,000 inhabitants.

Qualities the World's Safest Countries Have in Common

There are some commonalities among the safest countries in the world. For instance, safe countries tend to display high levels of wealth, social welfare, and education. Additionally, safe countries typically have effective criminal justice systems and governments that maintain very healthy relationships with their citizens.

Profiles of the World's 10 Safest Countries

According to the Global Peace Index, Iceland is the safest country in the world for the 14th year in a row. Iceland is a Nordic nation with a relatively small population of 340,000. Iceland has a very low level of crime, which is typically attributed to its high standard of living, small population, strong social attitudes against crime, a high level of trust in its well-trained police force, and a lack of tension among social and economic classes. Iceland has no military, and the police do not carry firearms (only extendable batons and pepper spray). Iceland also has laws in place to guarantee equality, such as legal same-sex marriage and same-sex adoptions, religious freedom, and equal pay for men and women.

2. New Zealand

New Zealand is the second-safest country in the world. Like Iceland, New Zealand has a very low crime rate, and violent crime is especially rare. Theft is still worth guarding against, especially in tourist areas (which holds true in every country in the world), but overall risk is minimal. Unlike its neighbor Australia , which is known for its dangerous wildlife (box jellyfish, taipan snakes, stonefish, funnel web spiders, and more), New Zealand has no deadly animals. New Zealanders are generally open-minded and have laws in place to prevent the violation of anyone's freedom of speech or expression. As in Iceland, police in New Zealand do not carry personal firearms.

Ireland became notably more peaceful in 2021 and vaulted from 11th place to 3rd in the 2022 rankings as a result. Crime is quite low outside of a few city neighborhoods ( as in any country, one should be wary of pickpockets and scammers in tourist-dense areas), and there is little threat of cultural violence or terrorism. In fact, the Irish landscape may pose a greater safety risk than its people—the country's breathtaking cliffs and winding country roads must be treated with respect, especially during a sudden rainstorm or in areas with no cell reception.

Ranked fourth on the 2022 Global Peace Index, Denmark is another one of the safest and happiest countries in the world. Denmark is one of the few countries where people report feeling safe at any time of day or night, even children. Denmark has a high level of equality and a strong sense of common responsibility for social welfare — two qualities that contribute to its citizens' feelings of safety and happiness.

Corruption is rare in Danish business or politics, as honesty and trust are top priorities. While Denmark has a high personal income tax , it funds social programs that ensure all people receive services and perks that help them live comfortable lives. For example, everyone in Denmark has access to tuition-free higher education and healthcare with no additional fees to them, and the elderly are provided at-home care helpers.

Austria ranked as the fifth-safest country in the world for 2022. While violent demonstrations in the wake of ongoing social unrest remain a concern, these are relatively easy to avoid, and otherwise, Austria is a very safe country to visit. Serious crimes are uncommon (with the usual caveat to watch for pickpockets and purse-snatchers). Additionally, Austria has been spared any major acts of terrorism in recent years.

6. Portugal

Portugal comes in sixth in the most peaceful countries rankings for 2022. In 2014, Portugal was ranked 18th globally and has since made significant strides. Unlike Iceland and New Zealand, Portugal has armed police; however, an increased police presence has resulted in a decreased crime rate in the country. In recent years, Portugal has experienced an economic resurgence, decreasing its unemployment rate from over 17% to under 7%. Portugal consistently ranks among the best countries for retirement , due in no small part to its high level of safety.

7. Slovenia

One of the former constituents of Yugoslavia , Slovenia has a high safety ranking that can be attributed to its excellent scores in three categories: travel security, medical risks, and road safety. Like many Slavic states , Slovenia installed a democratic government in the mid-1990s and is now focused on improving quality of life in many areas, including safety and sustainability.

8. Czech Republic

Crime rates in the Czech Republic have steadily decreased over the years, with rates of violent crime in particular dropping significantly. The Czech Republic also has a low incidence of terrorism and natural disasters. Finally, the country boasts many clean and efficient hospitals and a state-run health insurance system that offers affordable rates and enables near-universal coverage.

9. Singapore

Singapore ranks ninth on the GPI for 2022. In a Gallup report from 2018, Singapore residents felt the highest sense of personal security and had more positive experiences with law enforcement than did residents of any other country. Singapore has one of the lowest crime rates in the world, possibly due to the severe penalties that are issued for even small crimes. The government and police strictly control guns and other firearms, and violent and confrontational crimes are rare in Singapore.

As a city-state, Singapore also ranks as the second- safest city in the world according to the Safe Cities Index from the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU). In 2019, Singapore ranked first for infrastructure security and personal security, second for digital security, and eighth for health security.

The tenth-safest country in the world for 2022 is Japan. Japan has been in the top ten countries in the Global Peace Index for 14 years, consistently receiving high marks for low crime rates , minimal internal conflict, and virtually nonexistent political unrest. Japan's proximity to potentially hostile neighbors China and North Korea could become a threat to its safety at some point, but has not thus far.

Japan is known for citizens having limited access to firearms, as the Japanese do not view carrying a firearm as an individual's right. According to the Safe Cities Index from the Economist Intelligence Unit, Tokyo was the safest city in the world in 2019, ranking first in cybersecurity, second for health security, and fourth for infrastructure security and personal security.

IEP applies a rigorous research process to arrive at its GPI rankings. According to IEP , “The GPI covers 163 countries comprising 99.7 percent of the world’s population, using 23 qualitative and quantitative indicators from highly respected sources.”

Tourism is reviving, March data show

Tourism is reviving, March data show

Sangam Prasain

Hotels and restaurants in the tourist hub of Thamel are jumping back to life after two years of deathly quiet as the tourists return. Adventure seekers are putting the pandemic behind them, and are once again ready to pound the Himalayan trails, insiders said.

It's spring in Nepal, and the high season has begun. On a sunny Sunday morning, trekkers and mountaineers could be seen swarming over hotel lobbies strewn with colourful trekking gear, making last minute preparations before flying to mountain airstrips which will be their staging point into the Himalaya.

Lukla airport, one of the busiest in the country, is the gateway to Everest. Other popular Himalayan destinations are Annapurna, Dhaulagiri and Manaslu.

“It seems the tourists are back,” Bijay Amatya, CEO of Kora Tours, told the Post.

Nepal received 42,006 foreign tourists in March, the highest monthly arrivals in almost two years.

“This shows signs of tourism recovery to pre-Covid figures,” said Deepak Raj Joshi, former chief of the Nepal Tourism Board, the country’s official tourism promotional body.

According to the Department of Immigration , Nepal welcomed 15,013 tourists from India, the country's largest source market, followed by 4,029 from the United Kingdom and 4,896 from the United States.

Arrivals in March 2022 were up 2.8 times the figure in March 2021. Insiders say arrival numbers are getting closer to pre-pandemic levels.

In March 2020, Nepal received 42,776 foreign tourists before the government imposed the first lockdown and shut down the entry points.

For the last 20 months, hotels were practically empty, serving only a few returning residents and some foreigners living in quarantine.

Nepal imposed tight border controls at the start of the pandemic on March 24 in an effort to keep out Covid-19. That helped to contain the virus initially, but the tourism sector was devastated. Tourism accounts for around 8 percent of Nepal's gross domestic product in normal times.

According to the World Travel and Tourism Council’s 2021 annual research report , the contribution of Nepal’s travel and tourism sector to the total GDP plunged by a steep 46.6 percent in 2020 due to Covid-19 related restrictions.

The London-based council said the contribution of Nepal’s tourism sector to the overall GDP nearly halved to 3.6 percent in 2020, from 6.7 percent in 2019. This means the tourism sector injected only Rs132 billion into the national economy in 2020, down from Rs247.58 billion in 2019.

The total contribution of travel and tourism to employment also plunged by 19.9 percent. This translates into 207,000 job losses in 2020. In pre-pandemic 2019, Nepal’s tourism had generated 1.04 million jobs.

“Recently, we have been noticing increased tourist arrivals. This is the perfect time for us to inspire our marketing teams and agency partners to help refresh our creative assets and develop a campaign to create demand for the destination,” said Amatya.

“It's time to reach out to our international tour operators and airline partners, and start discussing how we can invest marketing resources together to get those aeroplane seats filled again.”

The pandemic inflicted a large negative shock on emerging Asia, a region highly dependent on tourism and exports, according to Household Vulnerability to Income Shocks in Emerging and Developing Asia, a report released by the International Monetary Fund on Friday.

Low-wage workers who are more likely to be employed informally and those who work in the services sector were the most affected. These workers have little means to smooth consumption when faced with negative income shocks as their stock of savings tends to be limited, and they often lack access to financial services or to other self-insurance mechanisms, the report said.

“After suffering those hard days, it seems the industry is recovering, though slowly,” said Joshi, who had also led Nepal's tourism recovery initiative as a coordinator for the Tourism Recovery Task Force.

“Still, there are no promotional efforts. If we put our promotional efforts in place and promote our upcoming two international airports more aggressively, we can attain arrivals higher than the 2019 figure next year,” said Joshi.

Nepal received 1.19 million tourists in 2019.

In 2020, Nepal had just launched an ambitious Visit Nepal Year campaign with much fanfare, aiming to attract at least 2 million tourists, only to have to abandon the programme after the incipient pandemic exploded into worldwide proportions.

The disastrous year ended with 230,085 arrivals. Following a difficult end to 2020, Nepal’s tourism suffered further setbacks as countries tightened travel restrictions in response to new virus outbreaks.

Nepal ordered a second lockdown on April 29 as a public health measure to prevent the spread of Covid-19. The stay-home order was lifted after four months on September 1 .

According to the Nepal Tourism Board, the number of foreign visitors entering the country last year totalled 150,962, a long way from the 1.19 million arrivals in pre-Covid 2019 .

Nepal’s tourism industry in 2021 sank to its lowest in four and a half decades and revenues hit rock bottom, making a big dent in the country’s economy.

The 150,962 arrivals in 2021 represent the lowest figure since 1977 when the country hosted 129,329 tourists, a year after tourist numbers in Nepal reached six digits for the first time.

Nepal on March 10 threw the door wide open to tourists, removing all pre-arrival testing requirements for fully vaxxed travellers in a bid to recharge its moribund tourism industry.

Vaccinated tourists now do not have to undergo a mandatory two-week quarantine or do a PCR test, according to the authorities.

“Now, we should think of faster recovery. We have to go to the source markets like India and Bangladesh,” said Amatya. “Let’s launch a campaign ‘Garmi Se Behal, Chalo Nepal’, meaning ‘If you want to escape the heat then take a trip to Nepal'."

Travel trade entrepreneurs say that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has disrupted the lucrative market of Eastern European tourists. They said that higher oil prices have also pushed up the cost of long-haul flights.

“Airlines are the main carriers of tourists. Two new international airports are coming up. But the government doesn't seem to be preparing to launch any promotional plan,” said Joshi.

“There’s a lot of pent-up demand for a vacation. As tourists nowadays make their trip without planning, Nepal needs to tap this opportunity.”

UNWTO becomes “UN Tourism”

The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) enters a new era  with a new name and brand: UN Tourism. With this new brand, the Organization reaffirms its status as the United Nations specialized agency for tourism and the global leader of tourism for development, driving social and economic change to ensure that “people and planet” are always center stage.

UN Tourism: Transforming tourism for a better worldTo achieve this goal, UN Tourism engaged the services of Interbrand, the leading global branding agency. Interbrand successfully translated the Organization’s renewed vision for tourism into a new visual identity and brand narrative.

This involved renaming the Organization, transitioning from UNWTO to UN Tourism. At the same time, a new brand narrative was meticulously crafted, one that seamlessly aligns with UN Tourism’s central mission and priorities. This narrative pivots around three main messages: the UN as a global altruistic organization, the notion of connecting humans around the world, and the concept of proactivity and movement.

Enhancing the well-being of individuals, safeguarding the natural environment, stimulating economic advancement, and fostering international harmony are key goals that are the fundamental essence of UN Tourism

By moving away from acronyms, UN Tourism adopts a more approachable stance and capitalizes on its strengths: the “UN”, signifying authority, and tourism, a simple and relatable concept for all. This change has been endorsed by the Organization’s membership, highlighting its united support for the profound transformation and reinvention of UN Tourism in recent years, as it has become more agile, visible, and ever closer to its Member States, partners and the sector as a whole.

With 160 Member States and hundreds of private sector affiliates, UN Tourism has its headquarters in Madrid, Spain, and Regional Offices in Nara (Japan) covering Asia & Pacific, Riyadh (Saudi Arabia) for the Middle East, as well as forthcoming Regional Offices for the Americas (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and Africa (Morocco). Its priorities center on promoting tourism for sustainable development in line with the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 Global Goals. UN Tourism promotes quality education, supports decent jobs in the sector, identifies talent and drives innovation and accelerates tourism climate action and sustainability . – UN Tourism Jan. 2024

Vietnam  to welcome 17-18

million  tourists  this year

Việt Nam’s tourism industry has set a target to welcome 17-18 million foreign visitors in 2024, approaching the pre-pandemic record in 2019 when COVID-19 had yet to disrupt global travel.

In 2023, the figure hit 12.6 million, surpassing the initial target set earlier in the year (before China, which accounted for a third of foreign arrivals to Việt Nam pre-pandemic, announced reopening plans) by 57 per cent and achieving the adjusted goal of 12-13 million.

The number of domestic travellers, meanwhile, stood at 108 million, up 6 per cent compared to the set target. Tourism activities generated about VNĐ678 trillion (US$27.85 billion) in revenue, 4.3 per cent higher than the yearly plan.

Despite substantial recovery in 2023, the Việt Nam National Authority of Tourism (VNAT) said the domestic tourism recovery will still face challenges in the year ahead. This is particularly true in the context of the unpredictable global developments stemming from economic uncertainties, regional conflicts and climate change.

Việt Nam’s socio-economic conditions remain stable; the economy continues to grow and inflation has been kept in check. But the persistent threat of disease and natural disasters are likely to create uncertainty affecting production, business activities and the daily lives of citizens.

According to forecasts from the UN World Tourism Organisation and the World Travel and Tourism Council, international travel activities may fully recover by the end of 2024, reaching the levels achieved in 2019. However, the recovery is expected to be uneven across different regions.

The ever-changing demands of international tourists require higher standards in product quality, diversity and unique experiences. The trends of integrating information technology, artificial intelligence and digital transformation are envisioned to drive the emergence of new forms of tourism.

Based on these analyses and projections, Việt Nam aims to serve 17-18 million foreign and 110 million domestic visitors this year, with an expected total revenue from tourism nearing VNĐ840 trillion.

To achieve the stated objectives, Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Nguyễn Văn Hùng has instructed the VNAT to continue focusing on advising and improving the institutional framework, policies, reviewing identified deficiencies for adjustment, and international commitments in the field of tourism. Collaboration with other ministries and sectors is emphasised to formulate policies for developing various types of products such as agricultural tourism and digital transformation in tourism. He also noted the need for attention on strengthening tourism statistics and digital transformation to enhance the effectiveness of data collection, providing reliable figures to efficiently support tourism policy planning.

The ministry also calls for enhanced training for tourism officials and workers to meet requirements of new situations, especially in terms of language proficiency and technology expertise. — VNS

Global Medical Tourism market

USD 136.93 billion in 10 years

Newark, Jan. 01, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — The Brainy Insights estimates that the USD 20.07 billion in 2022 global Medical Tourism market will reach USD 136.93 billion by 2032. There is a growing trend towards health and wellness tourism, with individuals seeking medical treatments, preventive care, wellness programs, and holistic health experiences. Medical tourism destinations can capitalize on this trend by offering comprehensive health and wellness packages.

Furthermore, integrating digital health technologies, including telemedicine, virtual consultations, and electronic health records, can enhance the accessibility and coordination of medical tourism services. Digital platforms can streamline pre-travel consultations, post-treatment follow-ups, and information exchange between healthcare providers and patients. Introducing new and advanced medical treatments, therapies, and procedures can attract medical tourists seeking cutting-edge healthcare solutions. Countries and healthcare providers that stay at the forefront of medical innovation can position themselves as leaders in the industry.

In addition, customized and personalized medical tourism packages catering to individual patient’s unique needs and preferences present an opportunity for service providers. Tailoring experiences that include cultural activities, recovery retreats, and concierge services can set providers apart in a competitive market.

Besides, wellness tourism, including genetic testing and personalized health assessments, is gaining traction. Medical tourism destinations can offer specialized wellness packages, including genetic evaluations and preventive health screenings, to attract individuals interested in proactive healthcare.

China eases visa application for US tourists

BEIJING: China will simplify visa applications for tourists from the United States from Jan 1, cutting the documents required, according to a notice on Friday (Dec 29) on the website of the Chinese embassy in Washington.

The move is the latest by China to revive tourism and boost the world’s second-largest economy following a slump during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Tourist visa applicants in the US will no longer need to submit air ticket bookings, hotel reservations or an invitation letter, the embassy’s notice said.

Beijing earlier cleared the way for passport holders from France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and Malaysia to visit the country without visas from Dec 1.Visa-free treatment will run for 12 months, during which tourists from those six countries can visit China for up to 15 days. China also expanded its visa-free transit policy to 54 countries in November.

The number of inbound tourists to the country plummeted during the pandemic due to the country’s strict COVID-19 control policies.

China’s visa-free policy facilitates

travels from 6 countries

Around 214,000 people from France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, and Malaysia entered China in December 2023, an increase of 28.5 percent compared with November, according to the National Immigration Administration (NIA).

China’s unilateral visa-free policy for ordinary passport holders from these countries took effect on December 1, facilitating inbound travels from there.

Of these inbound trips, 118,000 were made by ordinary passport holders without a visa, accounting for 55.1 percent of all inbound trips from the six countries during this period. Around 91,000 visa-free entries were made for travel and business.

Thanks to the visa-free policy, ports in the southern Chinese city of Nanning welcomed many inbound travelers. Data showed that 121 inbound travel groups of nearly 2,800 people entered China through ports in Nanning in December.

Since the inception of the visa-free policy, ports in Beijing had, by December 31, witnessed more than 12,000 visa-free entries from the relevant countries.

The NIA pledged more optimized entry-exit management policies for foreigners to facilitate their business, study, work, and life in China.

International flights to China have picked up since Beijing dropped COVID-19 restrictions a year ago but are still only at 60 per cent of 2019 levels. – Xinhua
