I had a very comfortable stay in East Perth away from the noisy end of Perth. Close to bus stops with free buses to/from central Perth. Plenty of convenience stores nearby, including one next door. My room had a well fitted out kitchen but lacked cookware; it was OK for preparing breakfast but not for preparing more adventurous meals. The bed was super comfortable. Bathroom was modern and spotless. Two televisions so I could watch TV in bed or in the lounge.

I had a great stay at this hotel. The staff were really helpful and friendly, the room was basic but clean and the pillow was comfortable!!!! In room dining prices were reasonable, the food was delicious and the portion sizes were satisfying (something I had been worried about as I was starving when I ordered). Breakfast was ridiculously cheap which made me very happy. Also, the main reason I booked this hotel was because it had free parking. Thanks Comfort Hotel East Perth! I will be staying there again the next time I'm in Perth.

Originally thought it was a bit pricey when booking, but that says more about my limited hotel stays than the Mantra itself. On arrival at the room, I quickly realised that it, and the facilities had far exceeded my expectations. It was close enough to all the venues we had planned to visit. The kids and wife loved it and we had an extremely memorable stay in Perth, that was in no small part also due to the Mantra and its staff. Thankyou

the Monte Claire is a fantastic refurbished building with modern design and appeal also with the convenience of being located in the heart of East Perth only minutes to the city via the free buses that run every 10 or so minutes, just straight up Hay st to the mall. The building has great parking with access for larger 4wds and extremely fast and responsive lifts. the rooms are spacious with everything you would find in more expensive accommodation establishments, beds are comfortable, the kitchen and laundry are convenient for the family stays as well as the sofa bed in the lounge room, all in all a great affordable place

I would recommend this place for travellers who like a little privacy from the city, it is in east perth therefore it is on the outskirt of the city, altho not that far off from CBD. The apartment comes complete with kitchen amenities and other things like dryer, washing machine, iron board etc. Location wise, its 3 mins walk to a local supermarket, some restaurants, and free public bus stop is 5 mins walk distance. I have stayed here with my family for 5 times here and i dont think we would look at others anymore.

I had a really good time. I have stayed in 5 star hotels across APAC for the last 5-6 years on nearly a weekly basis, and among Australian hotels, Hyatt Regency was my best experience. Every hotel has good facilities, but the staff brings it to life and everyone here was exceptional - from the concierge to the waiter. When the cafe was closed at night and my daughter wanted an icecream, a waiter went out of his way to go to the kitchen, find some icecream and bring it to us. The staff at the front door was always ready with helpful tips and when we missed our tour bus in the morning, they called the tour agency on their own and got us their in time by taxi to catch our connecting boat. My daughter also loved the wireless internet which let her watch YouTube and her favorite cartoon shows while we just chilled. There were also quite a few supermarkets (24 hours) / restaurants (Indian, Chinese, Cafes, etc) just outside the hotel which made it very convenient to stay. In all, a great stay. Thank you Hyatt. Will always stay here when in Perth.

the Sebel was in an ideal quiet location in east Perth. Public transport was readily available outside the front door. The room was clean and well appointed with a lovely view over the small inlet from the Swan river. there was more than adequate dining facilities within easy walking distance. Our only complaints were the lack of an exhaust fan in the bathroom, and the humming sounds all night from an exterior airconditioner on the roof.

Would recommend this hotel to anyone staying overnight in Perth. Hotel was very clean and well presented. Staff were very pleasant and attentive even though they were busy. We used the valet parking and staff always hurried to get our car when required. The breakfast provided was ample and continually restocked when depleted. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would definitely stay there again

13 Extraordinary Things To Do in East Perth 2023

' src=

East Perth is a beautiful inner suburb of Perth, close to the CBD. Being locals, we’ve found lots of things to do in East Perth, especially as David worked in the area for many years.

Situated close to the Swan River, East Perth was primarily an industrial area and the location of the East Perth rail yards, gas works, and power station. Today it is home to city professionals in apartments and double-storey residences with cafes and restaurants occupying Claisebrook Village.

This post may contain affiliate links (of companies I book through). This means I may receive a small commission if you book through them. You can read the disclaimer for more information.

Gloucester Park

Gloucester Park is home to the Gloucester Park Trots. Horse trotting, or harness racing as it’s sometimes called, consist of horses pulling a two-wheeled cart called a spider (or sulky) occupied by the jockey. Trotting started in Western Australia in 1910 and this course was subsequently built in 1929.

Every Friday night, you can see the best horses in WA race for a share in some of the richest metropolitan stake money in Australasia.

There are three eateries to choose from:

  • The Beau Rivage Restaurant is on the top level of the JP Stratton Grandstand and offers views of the entire racecourse and Swan River. A great choice for a night out with a Seafood Buffet and the option to include a beverage package. The private bar and TOTE facilities means you don’t have to leave the restaurant to place bets.
  • Steelo’s, on the ground floor, has a private deck for outdoor dining, bar, and TOTE facilities. They offer a pub-like menu, which includes kid’s meals.
  • JP’s Bar has three giant screens showing the best world live sport plus pint specials and pizza.

We’re not “gamblers” and rarely expose our children to gambling. However, we have taken them to the Gloucester Park Trots a couple of times, both on their dedicated Family Firework Nights. It’s a fun-filled night with kid’s entertainment including an animal farm, face painting, and a bouncy castle with a firework finale.

If you are in Perth for New Year’s Eve, Gloucester Park is a fun option. We went with friends and dined at The Beau Rivage, with the drinks package of course, and celebrated the new year with a firework display.

Admission prices can be found on the Gloucester Park website .

The Perth Mint , in Hay Street, is Australia’s official bullion mint, built in the 19th century to refine gold brought in from the Gold Rush. It’s a popular tourist attraction where you can take a tour and buy souvenirs including Australian coins, gold, silver and platinum. The mint is housed in a grand heritage building, one of Western Australia’s oldest heritage sites.

The Perth Mint holds the Guinness World Record for the world’s largest gold bullion coin . In 2011, the Australian Kangaroo One Tonne Gold Coin was cast, weighing 1,012 kg, and measuring 80cm in diameter and 13cm thick. The coin is made from bullion with a purity of 99.99 per cent and was worth around A$64 million in 2019.

I recommend taking the tour where you will see a live gold pour in the original 1899 melting house and learn about gold and the Australian gold rush. The one-hour tour offers a great insight into the history of the goldrush era as well as modern coin making. You get to view the Kangaroo One Tonne Gold Coin, handle more than $700,000 worth of gold bullion, and see molten gold being poured to form a solid gold bar. There’s a spectacular collection of natural nuggets, including Newmont’s Normandy Nugget, the second largest gold nugget in existence, which weighs 25.5 kg.

The Perth Mint Shop is in the Mint’s original gold receiving room where you will find valuable gold, silver, and platinum coins, gold nuggets, stunning jewellery, precious stones, and an exclusive range of gifts and souvenirs.

If you are going to take the Hop On Hop Off Bus around Perth, you can buy a multi ticket here that combines the bus with the Perth Mint Tour .

Whipper Snapper Distillery

Whipper Snapper Distillery features Perth’s first ever premium whiskey made from 100% locally sourced West Australian ingredients. Perth’s first urban distillery crafts some of Perth’s finest whiskeys, all made on site.

They offer various tours including a tour of production, the distilling process, and tastings. You can view and book their tours on the Whipper Snapper Distillery site .

Queens Gardens

Queens Gardens, named after Queen Victoria in honour of her Diamond Jubilee, were opened in 1899. This park offers a peaceful oasis with manicured gardens, flower beds, and lakes full of water lilies (the lakes are the old clay mines). It’s an ideal place for a picnic, to read a book, or take a stroll, and is a popular place for weddings.

The Peter Pan statue is a replica of the same statue in London’s Kensington Gardens and was produced by the sculptor of the original statue, Sir George Frampton, and signed by Sir J.M.Barrie, Peter Pan’s creator.

statue of peter pan in gardens

The bench in Queens Gardens was thought to be the original bench from the movie Notting Hill and had a plaque stating this. However, it has since been proved to be false and the plaque has been removed.

The site was previously used for horse racing and later as a clay mine and brickworks. The bricks made here between 1860 and 1890 feature in some of Perth’s most prominent buildings, including The Perth Town Hall, Barracks Arch, and the Cloisters Building. During this time, the park was known as East Perth Clayfields Reserve.

East Perth Cemeteries

My family always point out local cemeteries when we visit a new place as they know I find them fascinating. I’m intrigued about the people and their history, and it helps me get a real feel for the town.

East Perth Cemeteries was the first burial grounds established for the Swan River Colony in 1829, becoming an early colonial era cemetery. The first acknowledged burial was John Mitchell on 6th January 1830 (aged 22) and the grounds continued to be the main burial ground for the Perth area until April 1899, when burials commenced at Karrakatta Cemetery.

Unfortunately, due to the loss of many headstones and no burial register kept by either the Church Wardens or the caretakers of the Cemeteries, only 800 out of the approximate 10,000 graves have been identified. These 800 graves, however, are now conserved by the National Trust, and offer a special way to explore Perth’s early years. The headstones tell stories of courage, heroism, illness, and achievement and are of a highly significant historic value.

In the middle of the cemeteries, you can see St Bartholomew’s, a Gothic Chapel built in 1871. This mortuary chapel, designed by colonial architect Richard Roach Jewell, became a parish church in 1888. Despite times of neglect, it is still a consecrated church, used for regular church services, weddings, and other religious events.

Perth East Foreshore and City Segway Tour

This 90-minute Segway tour will take you along the picturesque eastern foreshore of the Swan River where you’ll get away from the tourist area to discover Perth’s hidden gems. The knowledgeable guides will tell you about Perth’s new colony in the 1800’s and stories of Western Australia’s gold rush era.

At the time of writing, Get Your Guide were offering the tour for the same price as direct but with free cancellation . However, if you want a Family Pass (2 adults & 2 children), it’s cheaper to book direct .

Optus Stadium

Perth’s much needed “new” stadium was opened in January 2018 and was voted the Most Beautiful Sports Facility in the World in the Prix Versailles 2019 international architecture awards. Optus Stadium, as it’s known by naming rights sponsorship, is owned by the Western Australian State Government, and operated by VenuesLive.

The stadium is located on the Burswood Peninsula with views of the beautiful Swan River and Perth city. The multi-purpose stadium can seat 60,000 and hosts a variety of sports and entertainment events, including Australian Football League, International and Big Bash League cricket, soccer, rugby league and union, plus concerts. Perth’s two AFL teams (West Coast Eagles and Fremantle Dockers) moved their home games here from Subiaco Oval and Perth Scorchers now play here instead of at the WACA.

There are over fifty food and drink outlets at Optus Stadium and The Camfield, a large microbrewery, is part of the area surrounding the stadium which includes the nature playgrounds in the Chevron Parkland, the BHP Boardwalk and Amphitheatre, picnic, and barbeque areas.

A good way to see the stadium is by taking the 90-minute Optus Stadium Guided Tour where you will experience the inner sanctum with change-room, locker room, and coaches’ room access. The tour includes viewing sports memorabilia showing WA’s rich sporting history along the way. You can book the tour here .

Matagarup Bridge Zip & Climb

The Matagarup Bridge was opened to the public in July 2018 providing access between East Perth and Burswood. The 370m suspension pedestrian bridge quickly became a Perth icon, and you can see it lit up in different colours to support major local, state, and international events.

Matagarup, meaning a place where the river is only leg deep, allowing it to be crossed, is the name given by traditional land owners to the area around Heirisson Island. The flowing arches represent the Wagyl, a water-serpent of great importance to local Noongar culture, and a pair of swans.

You are now able to climb and zip line from Matagarup Bridge .

Matagarup Mini Golf

A new mini golf course has opened in Perth on the banks of the Swan River. You will find it between the Matagarup Zip+Climb and The Camfield Pub. The 18-hole course also has a licensed cafe and the first nine holes are fully accessible, providing wheelchairs and prams access to half the course.

The Windan Bridge Loop

One of our favourite walks, or bike rides, is the Windan Bridge Loop , a 6.2 km trail running beside the Swan River and over Windan Bridge and The Causeway.

Windan Bridge was named after the wife of Yellagonga, a chief of the Mooro people, who was buried around this area.

There are a few stops you can make along the route including Heirisson Island where you may see Western Grey kangaroos, which can be found in the southern enclosure of the island (best sighted at dusk or dawn). If you have children, they will love Chevron Parklands, which has a fun playground, and you can view Burswood Park’s Heritage Sculpture Trail, a collection of over a dozen bronze sculptures designed by artists Joan & Charles Smith.

St Mary’s Cathedral

St Mary’s Cathedral was originally built in 1865 and has been the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Perth for over 150 years. The gothic cathedral has undergone three extensions throughout its life. The biggest began in 1926, and was only completed in 2009, making it the longest single construction project in Western Australia’s history.

The cathedral is located at the top of a hill in East Perth, at the centre of Victoria Square, and is the most impressive place of worship in Western Australia.

It is open for prayer and quiet reflection every day.

Girls School Cinema

The old Perth Girls School building, built in the 1930s, operated as a school for thirty years and then as a Police centre for fifty years. It is now home to live performances, a cinema, delicious food, and a bar. You can book tickets and view what’s on here .

Wellington Square – Moort-ak Waadiny

Wellington Square has had a A$17.5 million upgrade to include a new intergenerational playground and a place of reflection to commemorate the Stolen Generations. The playground features nature play, a skate park, a flying fox, embankment slides, a pump track, waterplay and climbing towers, and basketball courts.

large playground with climbing and slides

The Burswood Peninsula

The Burswood Peninsula is home to some of Western Australia’s biggest tourist attractions, including Crown Perth, Optus Stadium, the Camfield, Belmont Park Racecourse and the State Tennis Centre.

Burswood was originally developed as two separate entities – Burswood Island, and a part within the suburb of Victoria Park. An English migrant, Henry Camfield, was granted 1,000 acres of land opposite Claisebrook and named the estate after his father’s farm, Burrswood in Kent. The peninsula became Burrswood Island in 1841 when the Burrswood Canal was made to offer a more direct route to Guildford. Camfield let it to tenants until he sold it in 1871. The current spelling of Burswood was a result of a misspelling on the signs at the train station, built as part of the Perth to Armadale line in the 1890s.

WA’s first golf course was built on Burswood Island in 1895, but closed in 2013 to make way for Crown Towers and Optus Stadium. A racecourse was built in 1899 which became the Belmont Park Racecourse.

Burswood Island Complex (now Crown Perth)

The Burswood Island Casino was opened on 30 December 1985 and was the largest casino in Australia and third largest in the world. Burswood Island Hotel opened in October 1987, with the Burswood Convention Centre opening the following month, and on 8 April 1988 the Burswood Island complex had its official opening.

In 2000, a $96 million resort renovation was started followed by a joint venture deal with InterContinental Hotels Group in 2003, rebranding as Burswood InterContinental Hotel. A new, Holiday Inn hotel was constructed next to the Burswood Theatre and in 2004 was rebranded again as Burswood Entertainment Complex due to Publishing and Broadcasting Limited acquiring full control.

Publishing and Broadcasting Limited vested its gaming interests into Crown Limited and the resort became known as Crown Perth in 2011, in line with its sister complex Crown Melbourne. InterContinental Burswood became Crown Metropol Perth and Holiday Inn Perth Burswood was rebranded Crown Promenade . The $568 million six star Crown Towers was opened in December 2016 and is Perth’s largest hotel complex, taking the casino’s hotel capacity to 1,200 rooms.

a hotel lobby with red armchairs and white sofas

The Burswood Park has more than 56 hectares of public open space, including grassed areas, shady tree-filled spaces, recreational areas with free barbecues, and the river foreshore and is one of Western Australia’s most popular places. The park features seven lakes, scattered throughout the parkland for visitors to enjoy. You wouldn’t know that it was originally a rubbish tip, and the location of a cement works in the 1940s!

The Heritage sculpture trail is a heritage trail showcasing more than a dozen bronze sculptures and other public works and landmarks, which takes around 45 minutes to complete. The bronze sculptures were designed and produced by artists Joan and Charles Smith and bought between 1989 and 2002. You can download the  Heritage Sculpture Trail map  before visiting.

Ultimate Perth Itinerary: Fun 3, 5 and 7 Day Itineraries

The relaxed coastal city of Perth, the capital of Western Australia, often gets overlooked by its eastern Australian counterparts like Melbourne and Sydney. As a local who has lived in Perth my entire life, let me get you in on the secret – Perth is so underrated!

With some of the best beaches in Australia, hot summers and mild winters, hip suburbs, funky small bars and some amazing day trips, a trip to Perth offers an interesting variety of unique things to do and see for visitors.

In this guide, I’ve carefully crafted the ULTIMATE Perth travel itinerary. With a 3, 5 and even 7 day Perth itinerary, there’s something for all visitors. Regardless of whether it’s your first time in Perth or a return visit, I’ve got you covered in this ultimate itinerary for Perth travellers.

Aerial image of the perth city skyline and Swan river

Table of Contents

Quick Summary: Itinerary in Perth (3, 5 and 7 Day Options)

Here’s a quick summary of the best Perth itineraries for various duration stays. For more details on each day and recommended places to see, things to do and places to eat, keep on reading below.

Perth 3 Day Itinerary

  • Day 1: Perth CBD & Kings Park Botanic Garden
  • Day 2: Fremantle
  • Day 3: Rottnest Island

Perth 5 Day Itinerary

  • Day 4: Swan Valley
  • Day 5: Day Trip to Lancelin and the Pinnacles

Perth 7 Day Itinerary

Best Time to Visit

One of the (many) things I love about Perth is that you can visit all year round!

Perth winters are generally fairly mild – which can mean sometimes you luck out with sunny days and 20 degrees Celsius high (or more).

However, as many of the best things around Perth are nature-based activities, the most popular time to visit is during the summer months of December – February.

travel house east perth

Personally, I think the shoulder months of March-May and September – November are a great time to explore Perth. Prices and crowds are lower (although, it’s worth noting a “crowded” Perth is still miles behind what you would consider crowded in other cities across the country and the world!).

One thing to be aware of is the Australian school holiday periods, which can be found here .

In particular, the Christmas and New Year period, and the Easter school holidays in April, are exceptionally busy times of the year to travel in Perth. If visiting during these times, make sure to book your accommodation in advance.

How to Get Around Perth

Getting around the Perth CBD and neighbouring suburbs is fairly easy using public transport, including the free inner city network of CAT buses .

Taxis, Uber and other rideshare services are also plentiful in Perth. For my 3 and 5 days Perth itinerary, a car is not strictly necessary to get around.

However, if you’d like to explore beyond Perth, or go for a self-drive road trip to places like the Lancelin Sand Dunes, the Pinnacles Desert or even the Margaret River Wine Region, then a car will be required to get around.

For car rental hire, I recommend Discover Cars to browse and compare the best prices from different companies across Perth.

Where to Stay in Perth

If it’s your first time in Perth, I recommend staying in or near the Perth CBD for easy access to the main attractions.

  • Budget – Citadines St Georges Terrace
  • Mid Range – Art Series the Adnate
  • Apartment Hotel – Quest Mounts Bay Road
  • Luxury – Ritz-Carlton Perth

If you plan on hiring a car, parking is limited in the CBD and can be expensive. Consider staying across from the CBD in picturesque South Perth, or the inner CBD suburb of Subiaco.

  • Mid-Range – Tribe Subiaco
  • Apartment Hotel – Quest South Perth Foreshore
  • Luxury – Vibe Hotel Subiaco

I’ve included a few of my favourite hotel options above, or check out my full guide for the best places to stay across Perth .

This itinerary is very walkable. You can also buy a 24-hour hop-on hop-off bus ticket . This service does a loop around the Perth CBD and King’s Park every hour during the day, stopping at the main attractions and reducing the amount of walking.

Start your day with a coffee from one of Perth’s stellar coffee shops, such as La Veen King St, Standing Room Only or Smooth Operator (only open Monday – Friday).

Spend the morning wandering around Elizabeth Quay , which offers a great viewpoint looking back at the city skyline from Elizabeth Quay Bridge. You’ll also spot the distinctive arched Spanda sculpture.

Walk across the bridge to the Bell Tower – you can head up into the bell tower to admire 360-degree views from the observation deck and take part in an interactive bell chiming experience.

Book skip-the-line tickets here

Elizabeth Quay Art Trail

From here, make a beeline to Hay St Mall via London Court.

London Court is a little slice of old-English vibes, reminiscent of Diagon Alley, in the heart of the Perth CBD. Wander along and browse the small boutiques, and often you’ll find seasonal displays lining the open-air alleyway above.

At this end of London Court, keep an eye out for the clockwork display when it reaches the hour on the clock. You’re now standing on one of the Perth CBD’s two main shopping streets, Hay Street Mall.

Spend some time browsing the shops on Hay Street and Murray Street Malls.

For a guided tour of the city, I highly recommend a walking tour with Oh Hey WA. I’ve had the pleasure of joining Adie, the owner of the business, on both her Perth City and Perth Small Bar tours.

What I loved about these small group tours is that, even as a local who has lived in Perth my whole life, I discovered new things about my city!

Adie and her team of guides are very personable, friendly and informative. Their walking tours are a great way to get acquainted with Perth and discover what the city has to offer – that you won’t find in a normal guidebook!

  • Ultimate Perth Walking Tour: History, Architecture, Art + Local Insights (morning)
  • Perth Bar + Street Art Tour: Hidden Secrets, Laneways + Good Times (afternoon/ evening)

Save your feet from all the walking and join a segway tour around the river.

You’ll zoom past the Bell Tower, through Elizabeth Quay and explore one of the inner city parks with a hidden waterfall on this 1-hour guided tour.

Read the glowing reviews of this fun tour here .

In the afternoon, you can have a few options.

You could walk across to Northbridge and spend a few hours at the WA Museum Boola Bardip (tickets $15/adult), the Art Gallery of Western Australia or play a game of mini golf at Holey Moley.

Northbridge is a great spot for an afternoon drink in the sunshine – check out the range of locally brewed beers at Northbridge Brewing Co or the tucked away rooftop bar at Mechanics Institute.

Holey Moley Northbridge

Alternatively, walk or catch the free CAT bus to East Perth.

Walk across the Matagarup Bridge to Optus Stadium. Some fun activities to do include a zipline over the Swan River from the bridge or a guided behind-the-scenes stadium tour .

Matagarup Bridge over the Swan River

I’ve done the bridge climb and zipline twice now, and it’s such an exhilarating experience. You can watch a video from my experience below and book tickets here .

@tessomewhere Take 2 at Matagarup zip + climb! This time we did the express zip which has a shorter climb but still the same adrenalin pumping zip line over swan river! $99 for 90 mins #perthactivities #adrenaline #zipline #bridgeclimb #perthsummer ♬ original sound – Tess | Adventure Travel

You’ll also find the Perth Mint in East Perth, where you can learn about Western Australia’s gold rush, view the largest gold coin ever made and watch molten gold being poured into a gold bar.

Book your entrance tickets to the Perth Mint here .

In the late afternoon, make your way to Kings Park Botanic Garden . One of the world’s largest inner city parks, Kings Park is an iconic destination in Perth. Over 400 hectares in size, it is a biodiversity hotspot with untamed native bushland as well as cultivated gardens with large grassy areas.

I like to start by walking along Fraser Avenue, admiring the sweeping view of the Perth CBD and Swan River before reaching the State War Memorial that stands testament to Australians who have given their lives for this country.

travel house east perth

Meander along past the giant boab tree, and wander across the Lotterywest Federation Walkway, a glass walkway suspended among the treetops.

The lawn near the State War Memorial and Frasers Ave is a great spot to watch the sunset. Alternatively, head down to Elizabeth Quay for a drink at The Reveley or The Island to celebrate the end of a great day out exploring the city.

A popular tourist attraction is the iconic Blue Boat Shed located on the banks of the Swan River near Kings Park. You’ll often see a line of visitors wanting to take a photo in front of the cute over-water building. Visit before or after exploring Kings Park. Discover more Instagrammable locations around Perth here.

Where to Eat

  • Petition Kitchen: Petition is one of the many dining options in the beautiful restored heritage State Buildings complex. Long Chim (Thai) and Post (Italian) are also popular options.
  • La Cholita: a funky, lively restaurant serving up some of Perth’s best Mexican in Northbridge
  • The Standard: A hip bar and restaurant in Northbridge with a delightful 2-level garden bar
  • Meat & Wine Co: sophisticated steak house in the heart of Perth’s CBD
  • Angel Falls Grill: a small restaurant serving up delicious Venezuelan cuisine in a tucked-away alleyway
  • Hifumiya Udon Noodle House: this hidden restaurant transports me back to Japan. They hand-make their udon noodles and are always buzzing at lunchtime (open for lunch only).

Day 2 – Discover the Port Town of Fremantle

Today you’ll be exploring the vibrant hub of Fremantle, about a 30-minute drive from the Perth CBD.

You can jump on the train, with the Fremantle line departing from Perth station, or take a scenic cruise along the Swan River to arrive at the historic port town of Fremantle.

Wander along the “cappuccino strip” of Market Street until you reach Fremantle Markets .

This bustling indoor market dates back to 1897 and is filled with stalls selling everything from jewellery and clothes, handmade local wares and art to fresh food.

travel house east perth

After browsing the stalls and maybe a bite to eat, you could visit the Fremantle Prison for a tour of the culturally significant convict prison, or walk to Esplanade Park. Here you’ll find a large playground, shaded grassed areas and the distinctive bright red Ferris wheel.

This area is also home to the famous Little Creatures Brewery , an industrial brewery with a quirky and vibrant atmosphere. Try one of their many beers, or book a behind-the-scenes brewery tour.

travel house east perth

Other things nearby worth checking out are the WA Shipwrecks Museum, the Round House (a former convict prison) and Bathers Beach House, Australia’s first alfresco beach dining (literally, dining and drinking on the beach with your feet in the sand).

travel house east perth

From here, navigate to High St which is a hub of heritage buildings, quirky boutiques (including a record store and map shop) and many drinking and dining options.

travel house east perth

If you’re looking for the best sunset spot in Fremantle, Gage Roads Brewery is my pick. Next door to the WA Maritime Museum, Gage Roads Brewery is a massive, industrial-style brewery serving up fresh brewed beers and delicious modern Australian bites.

You can watch the cargo ships and ferries cruise into the port while you watch the sun sink below the Indian Ocean.

  • Tonic & Ginger: delicious Southeast Asian share plates in a multi-storied venue that used to be a synagogue
  • Emily Taylor: Funky bar and kitchen serving up dumplings and other Asian fusion
  • Bread in Common: this popular restaurant is housed in an industrial warehouse space and serves modern Australian cuisine alongside artisanal bread
  • Republic of Fremantle Distillery : an urban distillery serving fresh, local produce alongside specialty cocktails

Day 3 – Visit the Rottnest Island Quokkas

Rottnest Island is one of Perth’s best day trips. Catch the ferry from Barrack St in the Perth CBD or catch the train to Fremantle for the trip across to Rottnest Island.

Read all you need to know about planning a day trip to Rottnest Island in my detailed guide here .

5 Day Perth Itinerary

Day 4 – sample the delights of the swan valley .

After a long day exploring Rottnest yesterday, today will be more relaxed but still packed with adventures. Today you’ll be exploring the Swan Valley, a region with world-class wineries and a smorgasbord of dining options located only 30 minutes east of the Perth CBD.

If you have a car, you can choose to do a self-drive tour of the Swan Valley, otherwise there are plenty of options for tours that include transport. I’ve included a few of my favourite options below.

  • Ultimate Swan Valley Food and Wine Day Trip: Indulge in some of the best wines and food the Swan Valley has to offer. Include lunch, wine tastings, a brewery stop, cheese board and chocolate tasting on this all-day tour from Perth.
  • Half Day Swan Valley Wine Tour: Visit four wineries with a cheese platter at one, as well as a stop at a boutique chocolate factory
  • Swan Valley River Cruise and Wine Tasting Trip: Travel to the Swan Valley in style with a scenic river cruise from the Perth CBD. Sample a range of local wine, cheese, beer and chocolate plus enjoy a delicious lunch at a local brewery while enjoying live commentary from your tour guide on board the vessel.

travel house east perth

If you’re joining a tour, you don’t need to worry about planning the stops as this will all be organised by your guide. If you’re doing the self-drive option, these are some of my favourite wineries, restaurants and shops.

  • Old Youngs Distillery: this award-winning gin distillery has an incredible restaurant featuring native cuisine and unique dishes – book ahead!
  • Lancaster Estate: cheese and wine tastings in a casual rustic setting right next to the vineyard
  • Mandoon Estate & Homestead Brewery: one of my favourites in the Swan Valley, with a cellar door for wine tastings, a separate brewpub and a fine dining restaurant on a beautiful estate
  • Bailey Brewing : This popular brewpub has a fun, large kids playground – it gets very busy on weekends so book ahead if possible!
  • Sandalford Wines: One of the prestigious wine estates, and one of the oldest in the Swan Valley
  • House of Honey: you’ll find a honey shop with both honey and mead tastings in a beautiful garden setting, plus a casual cafe
  • Funk 2.0 Cidery : Casual cidery with a large range of ciders and outside tables

Day 5 – Day Trip to Lancelin Sand Dunes and the Pinnacles Desert

Time to experience another of the best day trips from Perth. Here’s a quick summary of the day, or read my dedicated Perth to Pinnacles Road Trip guide .

You’ll be driving (or joining a tour) to visit the sprawling Lancelin Sand Dunes , about 90 minutes north of Perth near the small seaside town of Lancelin.

Ride the dunes on a sandboard, or hop aboard a quad bike and cruise the dips and crescents of the dunes.

Aerial view over the rolling sand dunes at Lancelin

For lunch, head to the Cervantes Lobster Shack for a delectable lobster lunch. You can also join a tour of the Lobster Factory before or after your meal (no bookings required).

travel house east perth

Finish the day with a stop at the otherworldly Pinnacles Desert , famous for its towering limestone structures. Explore this national park on foot, or on the loop drive that circles the Pinnacles.

Keep an eye out for kangaroos and emus!

travel house east perth

There are two highly-rated tours that I recommend that include stops at both Lancelin Sand Dunes and the Pinnacles:

  • Pinnacles Desert Sunset and Star-Gazing Tour: Join this bus tour which first stops at Lancelin Sand Dunes for sandboarding. You’ll then head to the Pinnacles, enjoying a barbeque dinner in the middle of the desert, while sipping on local wine. See the sunset before marvelling at the clear night sky with the help of astro binoculars and a telescope.
  • Pinnacles, Koalas & Sandboarding Tour Day Trip: Your first stop will be Caversham Wildlife Park, where you can see koalas and hand-feed kangaroos. Next, travel to Cervantes for lunch and a tour of the lobster factory. The next stop will be the Pinnacles Desert, before driving over the Lancelin Sand Dunes in a custom-built 4WD vehicle. This will be an adventurous day to remember!

7 Day Perth Itinerary

Day 6 – relax at one of perth’s many beaches .

Have a relaxed day exploring some of Perth’s many beaches.

The most iconic beach in Perth is Cottesloe Beach which is a favourite for locals and visitors alike. Stroll along the picturesque coastline on Marine Parade, before taking a dip at the beach in front of the Indiana Tea House (now home to the trendy restaurant Indigo Oscar).

Spend a day enjoying the sun and sand, before watching the sunset while enjoying takeaway fish and chips on the beach.

Sunrise over Cottesloe Beach from Indiana

Another local favourite is Scarborough Beach , which hosts local markets on a Thursday night in summer and has a range of relaxed dining options along the coast.

travel house east perth

Another great beach near Perth is Coogee Beach around 40 minutes south of Perth.

This one is a bit trickier to get to (easiest to drive or get an Uber). It’s worth the effort to get to though, as it is home to the Omeo Shipwreck, a unique snorkelling spot. Trigg Beach (north of Perth) is another popular snorkelling beach in Perth.

If the weather is looking gloomy, consider taking another day trip from Perth or spend the day exploring the sights around the CBD that you might not have had time for on Day 1.

Day 7 – Venture to the Perth Hills

The Perth Hills is an underrated region that isn’t often on the itinerary of first-timers to Perth.

However, only a short drive from the CBD, you’ll find brilliant local wineries and restaurants, serene hikes, gushing waterfalls and more.

There are so many things to do in the Perth Hills, and hiring a car is the best way to see them in a day. Otherwise, this Small-Group Bickley Valley Wine Tour is a great option that includes transport (although just note tours usually only run on weekends).

travel house east perth

Other things to do in the Perth Hills include:

  • Stroll along the Mundaring Weir and go for a bush walk to South Ledge Lookout
  • Visit Lesmurdie Falls and hike to the base of the falls (best in winter and spring)
  • Enjoy lunch at one of the Perth Hills cideries
  • In autumn, visit Raeburn Orchards to see the stunning autumn foliage
  • Go for a wine tasting at a boutique winery (Fairbrossen is one of my favourites)
  • Watch the sunset from the Zig Zag Scenic Drive
  • Immerse yourself in nature at the beautiful Araluen Botanic Park
  • Pack a picnic and go for a hike on one of the many trails in John Forrest National Park

travel house east perth

Alternative Option: Drive to Margaret River

Consider spending a couple of nights in the Margaret River Region exploring the many wineries, natural attractions and stunning beaches in the area. It is a 3-hour drive from Perth to Margaret River, so it’s worth spending at least two nights.

For more ideas on things to do in the Margaret River Region, check out my guide here .

It is possible to visit on a day trip on an organised tour from Perth , seeing the main sights like Busselton Jetty, an underground cave and a brewery visit. It’s a long day but at least someone else is doing the driving, meaning you can sit back and relax!

Hey! I have found your blog SO helpful in planning my honeymoon to Australia, specifically our time in Perth and Rottnest Island. Thank you so much! I have one question maybe you can help with, do you know if there is anywhere reliable we can store our bags for a few hours while we check out Fremantle? We are planning to spend our last few days in Rottnest and would love to check out Fremantle as a pitstop on our way to the airport. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Hi Bre! So glad to hear my guides have been useful – your honeymoon sounds like it will be incredible! If you are staying in a hotel in Fremantle, they should be able to keep your luggage for the day. Connectivity: A portable WiFi device is the most convenient way to stay connected in Perth. Blue Boat House

You’ve probably seen it before. Perth’s beautiful isolated Blue Boat House — a cerulean complement to an aesthetic Instagram feed, and the backdrop for approximately 18% of profile pictures on Tinder.

In person, it sticks out as a sore thumb despite its mellow blue hue. Located on the Swan River next to a busy road, it is pretty much, but not completely, like a flower poking through a sidewalk crack. And it really is gorgeous.

Stand-up comedy is big in Australia. Every week, both seasoned and amateur comedians turn up at the second floor of the Brisbane Hotel to tickle (or attempt to tickle) your funny bones.

Lazy Susan's Comedy House 2 - Australia on a Budget

We showed up for Shapiro Tuesdays , an event specially for first-time comedians to give it a shot at the trade, and professionals try out some new material to see if they stick. At AU$5, cheaper than a beer, you get a memorable and hilarious evening with your pals. Pretty worthwhile to me.

Check out upcoming events at Lazy Susan’s here .

Cost: From AU$5 Opening Hours: 8PM – 11PM, closed on Mondays, Thursdays and Sundays Address: 292 Beaufort St, Highgate WA 6003, Australia

Accommodation in Perth: Hostel G — ~AU$29 per night. Located in the heart of Perth, this fresh hip establishment is a dream for both foodies and socialites. Most of the magic happens in one, colourful centralised lobby on the second floor — pool tables, arcade games, an open movie theatre, a bar and an in-house kitchen, to name a few amenities.

Day 2: Day Trip to Rottnest Island

Rottnest Island Quokka - Western Australia Instagram Hotspots

Rottnest Island, just off the coast of Fremantle, is the famous home of the “Happiest Animal in the World”. While no one can certainly prove that, they sure look like they are in a constant state of eternal bliss — and everyone loves them for it. But Rotto , as the locals call it, has more than its fair share of wonders that warrant a visit even without the cutie pies.

Getting from Perth to Rottnest: The cheapest way to get there is by train and ferry. Take the Fremantle Line to Fremantle Station from downtown Perth, then walk for 5 minutes over to Fremantle B-shed Terminal to board the Rottnest Express (AU$70).

Rottnest Express - Perth Itinerary

Getting around Rottnest: People tend to rent bicycles at AU$30 to tour the huge island. If budget’s not your concern, you can pay AU$60 and rent an electric bike instead. You move twice as quick and with three times less effort.

Cycling around Rottnest - Australia on a Budget

Meet the Adorable Quokkas (Rottnest)

Quokkas in Rottnest - Perth Itinerary

All three creatures in this picture are adorable but the tiny one in the middle gets my vote. Quokkas are scattered all over the island, but there’s usually a large congregation of them closer to the trees by the ferry terminal. Grab a selfie with these friendly fur-balls of joy and you’ve got yourself a new profile picture!

* Pro-tip: Quokkas tend to look happier when they’re munching on some greens. If you spot a quokka mid-meal, don’t touch them, but don’t be afraid to lie on the ground to get a shot either!

Optional: Skydive Over Rottnest Island

Skydiving Over Rottnest - Travel Essentials

I get it — skydiving is the last thing you’d expect on a budget itinerary. And no, I’m not about to reveal that it costs less than a hundred bucks. But you should know that if you’d like to partake in a maddening once-in-a-lifetime experience free falling from 4,262m up in the sky, you can do it at Rottnest as well.

It goes without saying that the view of Rotto from above is spectacular, once you get over the initial fear of jumping from a height no man or woman were meant to jump from.

Cost: From AU$329 Duration: ~2 hours

Have a Picnic by the Beach (Rottnest)

Picnic by the Beach - Perth Itinerary

The island is quite the beach paradise. With over 60 secluded beaches and 20 different bays, you can soak up the sun and sand until your feet and tanned skin are wholly content. We recommend grabbing some food from the restaurants before cycling off to have a seaside picnic with your best buds on your very own “private beach”.

Wadjemup & Bathurst Lighthouse (Rottnest)

Wadjemup-Lighthouse-Western-Australias-Instagram-Hotspots

If you’re sucker for history and random trivia, you’d enjoy a tour around the inner workings of the 170 year-old Wadjemup Lighthouse (AU$9). They are conducted every 30 minutes from 10AM to 2:30PM.

Little Salmon Bay (Rottnest)

Little Salmon Bay - Australia on a Budget

Little Salmon Bay is known to be one of the best snorkelling spots on Rottnest. Chances are you’ll come across several types of fish and jellyfish, so bring your GoPro camera with you to take some pictures. But because it’s quite a distance away from the ferry terminal, the lil’ bay isn’t usually too crowded either.

Palace Arcade (Perth)

Palace Arcade - Perth Itinerary

Once you’re back from frolicking around the soft sand and breezing past cyclists without an electric engine, treat yourself to some ol’ fashioned arcade games and drinks at the Palace Arcade .

Palace Arcade 2 - Australia on a Budget

You’ll get to immerse yourself in over 150 retro gaming machines for AU$1 – 2 per game, a collection curated by one man over 15 years. On certain days, you’ll get to play unlimited games too, with a minimum spend of AU$20 on their menu items. Check their website for more details.

Opening Hours: 4PM – 12AM (Wed – Thu), 12PM – 2AM (Fri – Sat), 12PM – 10PM (Sun), closed on Mondays and Tuesdays Address: 84 Beaufort Street, Perth, WA 6003

Day 3: Fremantle

Fremantle markets.

Fremantle Markets 3 - Perth Itinerary

The Fremantle Markets are Australia’s equivalent of the pasar malam — except they open shop in the day, and Uncle Ringo’s not lurking in the background.

Fremantle Markets 2 - Australia on a Budget

The sheer volume and variety of stalls can be overwhelming. Cuisines from all around the world seem to have made a pact to congregate in Perth every weekend. Nearly every food store offers something unique that tastes exquisite on the mouth, and the consistent waves of locals who show up are testament to its quality.

Fremantle Markets - Australia on a Budget

Visit with an empty stomach, and whatever stacks of cash you have remaining to pick out the best bits of the market.

Here are several shops we patronised and recommend: Fatboi Brownies , The Honeycake , The Original Fremantle Fudge , Eggspot , Pasta A Round , Roogenic Tea .

Entrance Fee: Free Opening Hours: 9AM – 8PM (Fri), 9AM – 6PM (Sat, Sun, Public Holidays that fall on a Monday), closed from Monday to Thursday Address: South Terrace &, Henderson St, Fremantle WA 6160, Australia

Fremantle Prison

Fremantle Prison - Perth Itinerary

Ex-prison visits are not just great for tales of the supernatural. They offer fascinating insight into what life was like for inmates back in the day, even now, and each prison has their systems that make them unique.

Fremantle Prison , active up until 1991, was known to be one of the most notorious prisons to reside in for both guards and prisoners. They didn’t have proper toilets (only buckets) in their entire 136-year history until the 80s (pretty crappy).

Fremantle Prison 3 - Australia on a Budget

The inmate in this prison cell was given special permission to paint his room, as a form of therapeutic treatment to help him relax.

They’ve got five different tours that last 75 minutes, each showcasing different parts of the prison. One of them is a night tour that requires you hold on to torchlight to really bring out the chills from your spine.

Cost: AU$22 – 75 (depending on tour) Opening Hours: 9AM – 5PM Address: 1 The Terrace, Fremantle WA 6160, Australia

Skyview Wheel Fremantle (Optional)

Fremantle-Ferris-Wheel-Western-Australias-Instagram-Hotspots

The Skyview Wheel, also known as the Tourist Wheel, makes for some sick Instagram-worthy photo opportunities. While you’ll be able to get a bird’s eye view of Fremantle on board, the image from the bottom isn’t too bad either (and it’s free). It’s located within Esplanade Park, a place with lots of natural greenery, and a skate park directly opposite the wheel too.

Price: AU$12 per pax Opening Hours: 10AM – 9PM, closes on 10PM on Fridays and Saturdays Address : 34 Mews Rd, Fremantle WA 6160, Australia

Holey Moley Golf Club, Northbridge

Holey Moley Golf Club - Perth Itinerary

I’ve been to many bars in my youthful existence, but the Holey Moley Golf Club is on par (haha) with the best around. Although their food is decent and their drinks are delightful, what makes the franchise special is not what’s on the menu, but what’s on the green.

Holey Moley Golf Club 2 - Australia on a Budget

More than half of the establishment serves up creative, elaborate golfing set-ups, a brilliant post-alcohol activity for you and your friends to have a ball of a time.

With a minimum spend of AU$10 (~S$9), which is essentially the cheapest item on the menu, you’ll get a free 9-hole game on the house. That’s ~S$5 cheaper than what you’d pay in Singapore — plus you get to enjoy a meal or drink too!

Opening Hours: 12PM – 12AM (Mon – Thu), 12PM – 1AM (Fri), 10AM – 1AM (Sat), 10AM – 10PM (Sun) Address: 53 Lake St, Northbridge, Western Australia , 6003

Spoil Yourself with Chicho Gelato

Chicho Gelato - Perth Itinerary

Chicho Gelato’s eclectic and eccentric range of flavoured frozen desert will make your sweet tooth sparkle and shine. Eggnog, Spiced Pumpkin Gingersnap, Burnt Butter Popcorn, Avocado Candied Bacon (???) are just a few of the unique tastes you’ll get to try. A scoop costs AU$5 and three scoops are AU$10.

Opening Hours: 12PM – 10PM (Sun – Wed), 12PM – 10:30PM (Thu), 12PM – 11PM (Fri –Sat), closed on Mondays Address: 180 William St, Northbridge WA 6003, Australia

Day 4: Best of the Rest

Versatile Clothing 1 - Travel Essentials

There are still plenty of things on the Perth bucket list to check off. Since it’s your last day though, we’ll leave it to you to decide based on the time you have left in the city.

Yanchep National Park

Kangaroos in Yanchep National Park - Perth Itinerary

There are a few things you don’t realise until you come to Australia. One of them is the unfortunate amount of roadkill you find on the highways, which are a pretty depressing sight. When we finally saw some kangaroos (alive and well) in Yanchep National Park , we quite literally hopped with glee.

Yanchep National Park - Australia on a Budget

The park is home to a community of kangaroos and koalas you’ll get to observe from a distance. It’s also as serene and quiet as any park you’ll find back home, perfect for a relaxing stroll any time of the day.

Entrance Fee: Free Opening Hours: 24 hours Address: Yanchep Beach Rd &, Indian Ocean Dr, Yanchep WA 6035, Australia

Rally Action Driving

Rally Action Driving - Australia on a Budget

If you’ve ever dreamt of stepping in the shoes of Lewis Hamilton, you may carry on dreaming. However, our friends over at Rally Action can offer you something else pretty close — an Adrenaline Ride . A chance to sit next to a professional rally driver, balls up in your throat, and reflect on the times you’ve bragged about actually being good at the wheel.

These guys are pros, and nothing quite compares with being in the front seat going at 150km/h on a dirt track. You can in fact try your hand at taking a spin with a professional coach next to you too, with additional cost and a full day free. Do note that the location of this activity is some ways from the city, and it’ll be more convenient if you have time to spare for transportation.

Cost: From AU$99 (~S$92) Activity Timings:  9AM, 11:30AM. Weekends only, open mid-March to early December How to get there:  2hrs 30min drive north from Perth. Exact location of race circuit provided upon booking.

The local’s guide to Perth: What to see and do in 2024

Why should you bother flying eight hours to Perth in 2024? Photo / Getty Images

Kiwis frequently holiday in Australia, but we don’t often think of Perth first. With year-round good weather, beautiful beaches, a burgeoning food scene and plentiful outdoor pursuits, it’s high time we did, writes Julia D’Orazio.

Consider this both a love letter and a guide to my hometown, Perth . For a good decade, I did my best to escape the West. I moved to Sydney and did the whole Kiwi-Aussie unofficial “rite of passage” by moving to London, prepared to live in a shoebox-sized room to make ends meet. Yet, the pandemic put a spanner in the works regarding continue living a fun but frugal life in Europe. I wasn’t planning to stay, but four years later, I’m glad I have.

Perth has also come of age in the last decade. I’ve seen it celebrate its natural assets and embrace state-of-the-art venues and experiences focused on creating a “sense of place”. These include new public spaces, cultural tours, and boujee haunts dotting scenic hotspots. The city flaunts its unique wildlife experiences, such as meeting an unbelievably cute quokka, swimming with wild dolphins, and going on a ‘roo safari. Where else can you embrace cosmopolitan living with adorable, friendly creatures?

READ MORE: How to plan a multi-generational trip to Sydney with your family .

There are more reasons to “doll up”, with Perth’s trendy bar and dining scene ever-evolving. Even celebrated cook Nigella Lawson cannot stop raving about what the city can plate up, recently twirling forks on a pasta circuit around Perth. As for nightlife, it thrives. Wine bars, themed saloons, rooftops - pick your vibe. Bars with sticky floors seem to be a rarity, and stock-standard pub grub is almost a thing of a bygone era (thank God!).

The sole city on the West even gets its share of showstopping events to make the others - ahem, the East Coast - riddled with envy. Coldplay, WWE, English Premier League football games - they’ve all recently put on a show in Australia’s best stadium award-winner, Optus.

Besides these one-off events, what else sustains the city as a happening place to visit? Well, I’ve done a 180-degree turn by becoming Perth’s biggest cheerleader, so let me spell it out for you all...

Life’s a beach

I know, I need to do a lot of convincing here, especially when New Zealand is brimming with natural beauty. But the outlook here in the West is quite different, perhaps more suited to swimmers.

Perth has 19 beaches with which to make a splash. The city’s coastline stretches 123km, and its wide, white sandy beaches with small waves are ever-inviting. Towel Tetris with crowds? Paid parking? None of those here.

Turn a dip into a spectacle event, with ocean sunsets a thing. The best beaches to bask in a sky show are Cottesloe Beach (Perth’s answer to Sydney’s Bondi, but for the right reasons) and hippy haven South Beach in Fremantle (more on “Freo” later). For a sundown session, it’s hard to go past the legendary Cottesloe Beach Hotel, opposite the iconic beach. Other great seaside outings include the new Hillarys Beach Club, Island Market (Trigg Beach) and Coast Port Beach.

Less about drinks and more about getting kicks. Water sports enthusiasts will also be satisfied with breaks suited to beginner to intermediate-level surfers. But once the “Fremantle Doctor” arrives, AKA the afternoon sea breeze, kite surfers come out, with Perth regarded as one of the world’s top spots in which to surf the sky. For underwater explorers, there are many snorkelling spots metres from shore, including Mettams Pool, famed for its concentrated marine life, and the Omeo shipwreck in Coogee.

A sanctuary for nature and wildlife lovers

Perth is not short on natural charms; some are cute, too.

Kings Park is the city’s creme-de-la-creme tourist attraction. Moments from the CBD, the 400ha reserve is one of the world’s largest inner-city parks, providing sweeping views of Perth’s prized Swan River and skyline. Within it is the Western Australian Botanic Garden, featuring over 3000 native plant species; a 620m arched walkway over Eucalypt treetops; multiple kids’ playgrounds; bush trails; and commemorative monuments.

Another must-do is Rottnest Island, a 30-minute fast ferry ride from Fremantle. The bike-friendly island is famously known for its smiling resident furballs which have dominated social feeds: quokkas. Besides getting the obligatory selfie with Western Australia’s happiest marsupial, “Rotto” woos with its raw beauty - a blue marble-effect coastline featuring 63 beaches and 20 bays, thriving reefs and limestone cliffs - and heritage builds. After a day of pedal power and beach hopping, join the revelry at Hotel Rottnest’s beer garden, watching ferries journey back to the mainland.

Head 45 minutes south and you’ll reach Perth’s other adventurous postcode, Rockingham. The seaside precinct offers guided marine encounters, such as swimming with wild dolphins and sea lions in Shoalwater Islands Marine Park. Get cultured on a walkabout with Whadjuk guide Steven Jacobs in Point Peron, where you’ll hear “Dreamtime” stories of the Derbal Nara.

Sip and swing in the Swan Valley

Go from refreshing dips to decadent drops in the Swan Valley. Located a half-hour drive from the CBD, it is the state’s oldest wine region and Australia’s second-oldest, with vines first planted in 1829. Upper Reach Winery’s small cellar door is a must-visit for its award-winning wines. For something off-kilter, visit Lancaster Wines, which takes an unpretentious approach with tastings in an outdoor shed and hosts weekend shucking among the vines.

The indulgent region isn’t just about full-bodied tangs. Craft beers and ciders flow at several independent breweries, such as the family-friendly Bailey Brewing Co and Funk Brewshed. The gin craze is also felt, with distillers Limeburners Ginversity, Old Young’s, and Damaged Goods Distilling Co each offering distinct tasting and blending experiences.

After a day of sipping all sorts, why not stretch your legs teeing off? Premier accommodation spot The Vines Resort has two world-class golf courses surrounded by native bushland. It is unlike anywhere else, with around 700 kangaroos calling the green home.

A fun way to see ‘roos bouncing between balls is on a one-of-a-kind kangaroo safari. The two-hour late afternoon guided tour includes self-driving a golf cart to spot hordes of kangaroos up close on both courses, an 18-hole round of mini-golf and a post roo-watching drink.

Late nights in Perth

Let’s get to the more fulfilling part: where to eat and drink in the city. Perth and its entertainment district, Northbridge, have both come a long way, with exciting happenings sky-high and below ground.

William Street is Perth’s food and beverage strip, with plenty of options to suit palates and moods. Once a temperance headquarters, it is now an energising vertical laneway, The Rechabite. The multi-level hall features the basement bar Goodwill Club, Asian-fusion modern eatery Double Rainbow Eating House, and Hello Rooftop Bar, with cheeky tipples permitted on all floors.

Opposite is the strip’s newest late-night darling, Edward & Ida’s. This cosy small pub aces innovative cocktails and good food with British flair (Go for the beef and Guinness pie with a bone marrow chimney). Upon entry, you’ll find its bar walls covered in antiquated signs spruiking booze. Chill back in the beer garden at the rear or opt for intimate ambience in the basement bar. Its wrap-around glass cabinets display over 3000 mini-bar-sized spirit bottles.

Admire city lights at Agwa Rooftop, the state’s largest rooftop bar, which rests on top of the Art Gallery of WA. It includes an open-air sculpture walk with 360-degree city views and a 34m-long contemporary Aboriginal art mural by Minang/Wardani/Bibbulman artist Christopher Pease.

Unwind in Fremantle

Catch the train to the eclectic port city of Fremantle, 22km south of Perth. The town has a distinct feel, with a mishmash of beautifully preserved Victorian-era buildings alongside street art murals, lively beer gardens, an exciting small bar scene, and modernised public squares (Fomo Freo).

Get your bearings around town on a guided tour with a walking human rainbow, Oh Hey WA’s Adie Chapman. Continue to feel part of the buzz wandering the centuries-old Fremantle Markets, perfect for miscellaneous knickknacks, souvenirs and street food. Stay close to the hip and carefree atmosphere this town radiates by staying at the Warders Hotel. The boutique limestone cottages were once used by warders in the nearby Unesco heritage-listed Fremantle Prison.

The town is dotted with temptations when it comes to joining local merriment. Go for a cold one at the state’s largest brewhouse, Gage Roads, housed in Fremantle’s historical B-shed along the inner harbour, and watch cargo ships pass by. For “cool as cucumber” vibes, check out new vinyl record bar, Ode to Sirens, along lively High Street. Enjoy a DJ spinning tunes while you feast on Greek-centric shared plates and sip wine. Sounds like a good time, doesn’t it?

4 dead as severe storms hit Houston area; hundreds of thousands lose power in Texas

Emergency crews in southeast Texas were clearing debris and assessing flooding on Friday after powerful storms tore through the state , killing at least four people and knocking out power to nearly 800,000 customers.

The winds — which reached 100 mph — were reminiscent of 2008's Hurricane Ike , one of the costliest natural disasters in American history, Houston Mayor John Whitmire said in a briefing Thursday. A widespread 3 to 6 inches of rain fell north of Houston, with one of the highest totals reaching around 6.9 inches in 24 hours near Romayor.

The storm also battered New Orleans overnight, with severe thunderstorms and flooding possible again through Saturday morning, according to the local branch of the National Weather Service .

In Texas, the destruction was evident even before sunrise, with high winds tearing out windows of high-rise buildings in downtown Houston and inundating the region with flooding. Streets were littered with glass, electrical lines and other detritus.

A woman looks at the damage caused by fallen bricks in the aftermath of a severe thunderstorm Friday, May 17, 2024, in Houston. Image:

“I know that many people lived through, and are still living through, scary situations with the terrible strong winds that blew across our county tonight," Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo said in a statement Friday morning.

"Damage assessments are ongoing, and we cannot know how long it will take to clear debris without those assessments completed, but from initial reports the debris looks very significant," Hidalgo said.

Classes were canceled for the 400,000 students in the Houston Independent School District.

Officials urged all but essential employees to work from home if possible, and the Houston Police Department told residents to avoid traveling downtown.

Two of the four people who died in Texas were killed by falling trees, while a third died when a crane blew over, Houston Fire Chief Samuel Peña said at a news briefing. No information was given about the fourth. Whitmire said a possible fifth death is being investigated, but it’s not yet clear if it was related to the weather.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott thanked emergency personnel in a statement, saying work is ongoing to assist communities affected by the storms.

“Our hearts are with the families and loved ones of those who tragically lost their lives due to severe weather in Southeast Texas, and we remain in contact with local officials to do everything we can to protect Texans and help our communities recover,” Abbott said.

A Houston police officer walks back to his vehicle after clearing people away from a damaged tire shop Friday, May 17, 2024, in Houston.

At one point, more than 900,000 customers were without power statewide; that remained true for around 670,000 as of 3 p.m. CT,  according to poweroutage.us . Nearly all of those were in Houston’s Harris County.

Heat and humidity in the city will ramp up into the weekend, which could lead to health concerns if power is not restored quickly. Temperatures could be as high as 91 degrees with a heat index of 97.

Across Houston, photos and videos on social media showed intense flooding and downed trees, as well as toppled electrical towers and power lines .

In a video posted to Facebook , rain was seen leaking into Minute Maid Park, where the Houston Astros play. Another video showed baseball fans leaving the stadium amid the bad weather.

Strong winds appeared to have blown off roof panels at a Hyatt Regency Hotel in Houston, a video posted to X showed. Other footage shared on the platform showed blown out windows in a building in the city's Wells Fargo Plaza.

Severe Weather in Houston Texas

Whitmire described downtown Houston as a “mess” and warned that “many roads are impassible due to downed power lines, debris, and fallen trees.”

Firefighters were removing live wires from Route 290 and most city traffic lights were down, he added.

In Louisiana, the severe weather knocked out electricity for some 215,000 customers, many in and around New Orleans. Around 115,000 remained without power as of Friday morning.

A swath of the southeast coast, stretching from Louisiana, through Mississippi, Alabama and into the Florida Panhandle, was under a flood watch early Friday.

A man walks over fallen bricks in Houston.

The National Weather Service said in an afternoon update that unsettled weather, including the possibility of excessive rainfall and severe thunderstorms, will persist across the Southeast through Saturday.

Around 7 million people along the central Gulf Coast remain under flood watches.

“A few tornadoes, scattered damaging winds, and hail all appear possible over the central/eastern Gulf Coast area,” according to the National Weather Service.

The agency also noted a risk of severe thunderstorms in portions of the northern Plains through Friday evening.

The latest on the massive solar storm

By Angela Fritz, Elise Hammond and Chris Lau, CNN

Incredible lighthouse picture from Maine

From CNN's Chris Lau

A long-exposure photo shows the aurora borealis over Portland, Maine, on May 10.

Among a flurry of surreal images capturing the dazzling auroras is one taken by Benjamin Williamson of a lighthouse in Portland, Maine.

"It's one of the most incredible things I've ever seen, the awe and wonder," Williamson told CNN.

He said he used a long-exposure technique to snap the shot, but did not edit it.

Watch the full interview with Williamson here .

Things could be about to ramp up

If you still haven't seen the aurora, hold on for another 30 minutes to an hour, according to CNN meteorologist Chad Myers.

The next wave of coronal mass ejections, or CMEs, which cause the aurora, is about to arrive, he said.

"Just wait a minute because things are going to start to ramp up here," he said, adding that the increase could arrive "anytime now." "When it comes, get outside, get ready, put your coat on."

For those who are too busy to witness the phenomenon tonight, Myers said the aurora is expected to last three nights.

Why does the aurora last for a weekend?

By CNN's Chris Lau

The northern lights can be seen from Eaton Rapids, Michigan, on May 10.

Generally, it takes just eight minutes for light to travel 93 million miles to the Earth from the sun, but astrophysicist Janna Levin said the energized particles causing the current wave of aurora travel a lot slower, causing the phenomenon to last for the weekend.

"Some of these mass ejections are trillions of kilograms," she said. "They're slower. So they're taking longer, but still hours, maybe tens of hours."

Here's how the solar storm looks in the South and on the East Coast

The aurora was visible across the East Coast and in the South Friday.

Here's how it looked in Chester, South Carolina.

Down in Florida, waves of color swam through the sky.

Up north in New Jersey, a purple-ish haze could be seen in the sky.

Will solar storms get more intense and risky in the future?

The answer is probably not in the short term, according to astrophysicist Hakeem Oluseyi.

He said scientists study what is constantly happening on the surface of the sun and have found a pattern.

“Geological data shows us that in the past the sun was way more active than it is today. It has cycles where it goes very quiet ... and you have events that show that the solar activity was much, much greater,” he told CNN. “So there's no evidence that we're going to see those big maxima this cycle."

But the astrophysicist also spoke of a caveat - the limitations of modern science.

“Even though it's predictable in the short term, we still don't quite understand what creates the magnetic fields in the sun,” he said, adding: “That's why NASA has so many satellites looking at the sun.”

The rare solar storm may also disrupt communications. The last time a solar storm of this magnitude reached Earth was in October 2003, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Space Weather Prediction Center.

Behind dazzling aurora could lie “real danger,” Bill Nye the Science Guy says

Bill Nye the Science Guy speaks to CNN on Friday, May 10.

The massive solar storm could present “a real danger,” especially with the modern world relying so much on electricity, according to Bill Nye the Science Guy , a science educator and engineer.

Scientists are warning an increase in solar flares and coronal mass ejections from the sun have the potential to disrupt communication on Earth into the weekend. Solar flares can affect communications and GPS almost immediately because they disrupt Earth’s ionosphere, or part of the upper atmosphere. Energetic particles released by the sun can also disrupt electronics on spacecraft and affect astronauts without proper protection within 20 minutes to several hours.

In comparison to tonight's event, Nye drew comparisons with another incident in 1859, known as the Carrington Event, when telegraph communications were severely affected.

“The other thing, everybody, that is a real danger to our technological society, different from 1859, is how much we depend on electricity and our electronics and so on,” Nye said. "None of us really in the developed world could go very long without electricity."

He noted that there are systems in place to minimize the impact, but “stuff might go wrong,” stressing that not all transformers are equipped to withstand such a solar event.

“It depends on the strength of the event and it depends on how much of our infrastructures are prepared for this the sort of thing,” he said.

Here's where clouds will block the view of the northern lights in the US

From CNN's Angela Fritz

An infrared satellite image taken around 10:30 p.m. ET.

After an incredibly stormy week, most of the Lower 48 has clear skies to see the northern lights. But there are some areas where clouds and rainy weather are spoiling the view.

A deck of clouds is blocking the sky in the Northeast, from parts of Virginia into Maine, as an area of low pressure spins off the East Coast.

In the Midwest, the aurora will be hard to see through thick clouds in parts of Wisconsin, Michigan — including the Upper Peninsula — and Illinois.

A stripe of clouds is tracking across Texas, including Dallas-Forth Worth, and into Louisiana.

And in the Southwest, patchy clouds across the the Four Corners region could make the northern lights difficult to spot.

Aurora seen at least as far south as Georgia

Barely visible to the naked eye, the aurora can be seen in Atlanta in the 10 p.m. ET hour.

It is easier to see through photographs using a long exposure. The photos below, taken by CNN's Eric Zerkel and Emily Smith, used 3- and 10-second exposures.

Aurora seen in Atlanta around 10:15 p.m. ET.
