All travelers should submit self-declaration form on the online Air Suvidha portal ( www.newdelhiairport.in ) before the scheduled travel, including last 14 days travel details. 1. Passengers from a country that has requirements which may prevent passengers to go back due to COVID -19 shall be required to have health insurance covering at least USD 10000 of treatment of COVID -19 for the itineraries in Thailand plus 7 days. I just returned from a Thailand vacation; these are my tips for yours

On 1 February, Thailand made it easier for travellers to visit the country by dropping the quarantine for several categories of tourists. Seven days later, my husband Prateek and I jumped on a flight to Bangkok for a much-needed vacation. Getting to Thailand seemed a tedious affair for the sheer amount of paperwork required, but once you have the documents in place, the process is quite simple. We had a wonderful time, and if you are planning a holiday in Thailand, here’s how to do it right. Do note that the rules are subject to change, so it’s best to check with your airline and the official channels for the latest.

Travel to Thailand: The big points

Thailand recognises several vaccines including AstraZeneca or Covishield, Pfizer–BioNTech, Sinopharm, Sputnik V and Covaxin.
You will need to take RT-PCR tests: one before boarding and then again on arrival, no matter what your vaccination status. If you stay five days and more, you need to take a second RT-PCR test on Day 5.
You will have to check in to a hotel certified by the government, till you await your Day 1 RT-PCR test results.
A vaccination certificate is not required for children below 18 travelling together with their parents. However, they should register for the Thai Pass QR Code together with their parents/guardians and not separately (more on the Thai Pass later).

Travel to Thailand: the paperwork you need

You need to sign up for the ‘Thai Pass’ to enter the country. One can currently obtain this Thai Pass through one of three ways.

Option 1: Test and Go

This option was originally only available for travellers from low-risk countries. From 1 February, this option allows fully vaccinated travellers from virtually every country around the world (including India) to enter Thailand and travel domestically with minimal restrictions.
The only mandatory requirement is to take a one-day quarantine + RT-PCR test at your hotel on Day 1 of landing and, again, a mandatory pre-booked RT-PCR test on Day 5, if you stay that long. If you test negative on Day 1, you are free to travel without restrictions in Thailand. However, on both day 1 and 5, it is mandatory for travellers to stay in a SHA Extra+ or AQ hotel. You can either stay in the same hotel OR be in different hotels in two different locations on Days 1 and 5. List of SHA Extra+ Hotels here ; List of AQ Hotels here

Option 2: The Blue Zone Sandbox Programme

This option allows vaccinated travellers to stay in a pre-booked SHA Extra+ hotel within a sandbox area for seven nights, inclusive of airport pick-up, post which they can travel within Thailand without restrictions.
This is the original programme that was started by the Thai government for provinces that had a vaccination rate of 70% and more. The test and go option, which recently expanded to all countries, allows for more flexibility as you are allowed to travel between provinces from Day 2 itself. Sandbox provinces include: Bangkok; Krabi; Phuket; Surat Thani. Full list of locations here .

Option 3: Alternative Quarantine (for non-vaccinated travellers)

This option allows un-vaccinated tourists to stay in a pre-approved and pre-booked accommodation for 7/10/14 days, post which, they are able to travel within Thailand without restrictions. You are not allowed to leave the alternative quarantine for the duration of your programme.

We chose to enter Thailand with Option 1: Test and Go . For this, you need the Thai Pass, and these are the bold points:

Visit the Thai Pass website .
Processing time: 3-7 days (it normally comes through in 3 days)
Documents that you need to submit online:
Copy of passport
Confirmed flight tickets
Travel insurance with minimum $50,000USD coverage (which includes COVID coverage). It will cost you approximately Rs1,000.
Day 1 hotel reservation in a ‘SHA Extra+/AQ hotel. The reservation must expressly include airport pick-up and one RT-PCR test and meals. You can either search for hotels that offer this Test and Go Package or directly reach out to certified hotels to provide you with the above requirement. A soft copy of the confirmed booking which includes these requirements are a must.
Day 5 hotel reservation in a ‘SHA Extra+/AQ hotel, which must expressly include one RT-PCR test. However, if you are in Phuket, you have to pre-book a pre-paid RT-PCR test yourself and separately upload this booking receipt in your application. Check list of centres here .
Full vaccination certificate (recognised vaccines include AstraZeneca or Covishield, Pfizer–BioNTech, Sinopharm, Sputnik V and Covaxin by Bharat Biotech International Limited)

Make sure that you have all all the above documents in place, particularly ensuring that your hotels are all SHA Extra + certified and that your Day 1 PCR test is included and prepaid in your booking and your Day 5 PCR test is either included in your booking or pre-paid via the official Thai RT-PCR test appointment website. Thailand visa for Indian travellers

We chose to get our visa after we got our Thai Pass as it is not mandatory to have a visa in hand (for Indian citizens) while applying for a Thai pass.
You can either opt for the regular stamped visa in person via VFS or, alternatively, apply for an e-visa online here . We choose to apply for an e-visa ourselves and below are the requirements for the same.
While the visa-on-arrival option is available, we highly recommend taking either of the two options to ensure smoother travel.
The Thailand e-visa will cost you THB 2,500 (Rs5,800) with a processing time of 3-7 days.

Negative RT-PCR report

Once you have your Thai Pass and Thailand visa in hand, you also need to ensure that you have a negative PCR test with a QR code–with a 72-hour validity window prior to your flight.

Travelling to Thailand

Day 1: Mumbai to Bangkok

At the airport in India, the airlines review the following documents before giving you your boarding pass:

Visa/e-visa
Negative RT-PCR test report (with QR Code)
Vaccination certificate
Health insurance

When we travelled, there were only two airline options out of India—Air India and Thai Airways. We chose to travel Air India as the timing was more suitable. Our flight was close to 70% full with mostly business travellers.

Similarly, once you land at Bangkok, there is an additional desk set up where they again scan your Thai Pass QR Code before letting you through to immigration. The remainder of the procedure is the same as before.

As you exit the luggage hall, numerous hotels have set up temporary booths with hotel signboards and representatives. You need to find your hotel representative, who will take you to your vehicle. It is mandatory to take this pre-booked airport transfer.

Once you reach the hotel room, all meals are served in-room itself. For us, an RT-PCR test was also conducted on the hotel premises. The results typically come within 8-10 hours, which your hotel hands over to you. Post a negative report, you can continue with your regular holiday either at the same/different hotel or anywhere else in Thailand. We flew out to Phuket on Day 2 of our trip. Domestic flights are simple and the only document they check is your vaccination certificate.

Days 2-4: To Phuket

At Phang Nga Bay

We spent our initial days exploring Phuket Old Town, an area of historical interest with beautiful Sino-Portuguese townhouses and fantastic restaurants. We also did a day trip to Phang Nga National Park, a stunning bay characterised by limestone cliffs and Mangroves. Both locations at the start of February were largely empty and we were left to explore things at our own pace and schedule.

Day 5: Phuket and thereabouts

Our hotel in Phuket was ‘SHA Extra+ certified’ and on Day 5, we made our way ourselves to the pre-booked appointment at the swab centre. The results of Day 5 came within 24 hours on our email. It is recommended to isolate yourself from time of test to the result. Besides the above, we didn't face any issue while travelling within Thailand as everyone was extremely cooperative and helpful.

The hotel in Phuket

Our return flight to India was smooth—you no longer need an RT-PCR prior to boarding or on arrival. We just had to fill out the Air Suvidha form 48 hours prior to our return flight.

What it’s like to be in Thailand right now

As with everywhere in the world, small and large businesses in Thailand have suffered tremendously due to the pandemic, and one can see the signs. Though several restaurants, night markets and shops have shut, many of the popular ones are now open. Mask mandates and temperature checks are followed strictly in the larger cities and restaurants and bars are open till around 11pm. It’s always good to check their timings before planning your meals.

Despite these restrictions, we had a wonderful holiday in Thailand. We tried to support both small and large businesses where we could, and are grateful to all the Thai people who made us feel so welcome in their Land of Smiles.

Chikungunya

There has been evidence of chikungunya virus transmission in Thailand within the last 5 years. Chikungunya vaccination may be considered for the following travelers:

People aged 65 years or older, especially those with underlying medical conditions, who may spend at least 2 weeks (cumulative time) in indoor or outdoor areas where mosquitoes are present in Thailand, OR
People planning to stay in Thailand for a cumulative period of 6 months or more

Hepatitis A

Recommended for unvaccinated travelers one year old or older going to Thailand.

Infants 6 to 11 months old should also be vaccinated against Hepatitis A. The dose does not count toward the routine 2-dose series.

Travelers allergic to a vaccine component or who are younger than 6 months should receive a single dose of immune globulin, which provides effective protection for up to 2 months depending on dosage given.

Unvaccinated travelers who are over 40 years old, immunocompromised, or have chronic medical conditions planning to depart to a risk area in less than 2 weeks should get the initial dose of vaccine and at the same appointment receive immune globulin.

Recommended for travelers who

Are moving to an area with Japanese encephalitis to live
Spend long periods of time, such as a month or more, in areas with Japanese encephalitis
Frequently travel to areas with Japanese encephalitis

Consider vaccination for travelers

Spending less than a month in areas with Japanese encephalitis but will be doing activities that increase risk of infection, such as visiting rural areas, hiking or camping, or staying in places without air conditioning, screens, or bed nets
Going to areas with Japanese encephalitis who are uncertain of their activities or how long they will be there

Not recommended for travelers planning short-term travel to urban areas or travel to areas with no clear Japanese encephalitis season.

Japanese Encephalitis Vaccine for US Children

CDC recommends that travelers going to certain areas of Thailand take prescription medicine to prevent malaria. Depending on the medicine you take, you will need to start taking this medicine multiple days before your trip, as well as during and after your trip. Talk to your doctor about which malaria medication you should take.

Cases of measles are on the rise worldwide. Travelers are at risk of measles if they have not been fully vaccinated at least two weeks prior to departure, or have not had measles in the past, and travel internationally to areas where measles is spreading.

All international travelers should be fully vaccinated against measles with the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine, including an early dose for infants 6–11 months, according to CDC’s measles vaccination recommendations for international travel .

Dogs infected with rabies are sometimes found in Thailand.

If rabies exposures occur while in Thailand, rabies vaccines are typically available throughout most of the country.

Rabies pre-exposure vaccination considerations include whether travelers 1) will be performing occupational or recreational activities that increase risk for exposure to potentially rabid animals and 2) might have difficulty getting prompt access to safe post-exposure prophylaxis.

Please consult with a healthcare provider to determine whether you should receive pre-exposure vaccination before travel.

Bugs (like mosquitoes, ticks, and fleas) can spread a number of diseases in Thailand. Many of these diseases cannot be prevented with a vaccine or medicine. You can reduce your risk by taking steps to prevent bug bites.

What can I do to prevent bug bites?

Cover exposed skin by wearing long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and hats.
Use an appropriate insect repellent (see below).
Use permethrin-treated clothing and gear (such as boots, pants, socks, and tents). Do not use permethrin directly on skin.
Stay and sleep in air-conditioned or screened rooms.
Use a bed net if the area where you are sleeping is exposed to the outdoors.

What type of insect repellent should I use?

FOR PROTECTION AGAINST TICKS AND MOSQUITOES: Use a repellent that contains 20% or more DEET for protection that lasts up to several hours.

If your travel plans in Thailand include outdoor activities, take these steps to stay safe and healthy during your trip.

Stay alert to changing weather conditions and adjust your plans if conditions become unsafe.
Prepare for activities by wearing the right clothes and packing protective items, such as bug spray, sunscreen, and a basic first aid kit.
Consider learning basic first aid and CPR before travel. Bring a travel health kit with items appropriate for your activities.
If you are outside for many hours in heat, eat salty snacks and drink water to stay hydrated and replace salt lost through sweating.
Protect yourself from UV radiation : use sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15, wear protective clothing, and seek shade during the hottest time of day (10 a.m.–4 p.m.).
Be especially careful during summer months and at high elevation. Because sunlight reflects off snow, sand, and water, sun exposure may be increased during activities like skiing, swimming, and sailing.
Very cold temperatures can be dangerous. Dress in layers and cover heads, hands, and feet properly if you are visiting a cold location.

Stay safe around water

Swim only in designated swimming areas. Obey lifeguards and warning flags on beaches.
Practice safe boating—follow all boating safety laws, do not drink alcohol if driving a boat, and always wear a life jacket.
Do not dive into shallow water.
Do not swim in freshwater in developing areas or where sanitation is poor.
Avoid swallowing water when swimming. Untreated water can carry germs that make you sick.
To prevent infections, wear shoes on beaches where there may be animal waste.

Leptospirosis, a bacterial infection that can be spread in fresh water, is found in Thailand. Avoid swimming in fresh, unchlorinated water, such as lakes, ponds, or rivers.

Keep away from animals

Most animals avoid people, but they may attack if they feel threatened, are protecting their young or territory, or if they are injured or ill. Animal bites and scratches can lead to serious diseases such as rabies.

Follow these tips to protect yourself:

Do not touch or feed any animals you do not know.
Do not allow animals to lick open wounds, and do not get animal saliva in your eyes or mouth.
Avoid rodents and their urine and feces.
Traveling pets should be supervised closely and not allowed to come in contact with local animals.
If you wake in a room with a bat, seek medical care immediately. Bat bites may be hard to see.

All animals can pose a threat, but be extra careful around dogs, bats, monkeys, sea animals such as jellyfish, and snakes. If you are bitten or scratched by an animal, immediately:

Wash the wound with soap and clean water.
Go to a doctor right away.
Tell your doctor about your injury when you get back to the United States.

Consider buying medical evacuation insurance. Rabies is a deadly disease that must be treated quickly, and treatment may not be available in some countries.

Reduce your exposure to germs

Follow these tips to avoid getting sick or spreading illness to others while traveling:

Wash your hands often, especially before eating.
If soap and water aren’t available, clean hands with hand sanitizer (containing at least 60% alcohol).
Don’t touch your eyes, nose, or mouth. If you need to touch your face, make sure your hands are clean.
Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) when coughing or sneezing.
Try to avoid contact with people who are sick.
If you are sick, stay home or in your hotel room, unless you need medical care.

Avoid sharing body fluids

Diseases can be spread through body fluids, such as saliva, blood, vomit, and semen.

Protect yourself:

Use latex condoms correctly.
Do not inject drugs.
Limit alcohol consumption. People take more risks when intoxicated.
Do not share needles or any devices that can break the skin. That includes needles for tattoos, piercings, and acupuncture.
If you receive medical or dental care, make sure the equipment is disinfected or sanitized.

Know how to get medical care while traveling

Plan for how you will get health care during your trip, should the need arise:

Carry a list of local doctors and hospitals at your destination.
Review your health insurance plan to determine what medical services it would cover during your trip. Consider purchasing travel health and medical evacuation insurance.
Carry a card that identifies, in the local language, your blood type, chronic conditions or serious allergies, and the generic names of any medications you take.
Some prescription drugs may be illegal in other countries. Call Thailand’s embassy to verify that all of your prescription(s) are legal to bring with you.

In some countries, medicine (prescription and over-the-counter) may be substandard or counterfeit. Bring the medicines you will need from the United States to avoid having to buy them at your destination.

Malaria is a risk in some parts of Thailand. If you are going to a risk area, fill your malaria prescription before you leave, and take enough with you for the entire length of your trip. Follow your doctor’s instructions for taking the pills; some need to be started before you leave.

Select safe transportation

Motor vehicle crashes are the #1 killer of healthy US citizens in foreign countries.

In many places cars, buses, large trucks, rickshaws, bikes, people on foot, and even animals share the same lanes of traffic, increasing the risk for crashes.

Be smart when you are traveling on foot.

Use sidewalks and marked crosswalks.
Pay attention to the traffic around you, especially in crowded areas.
Remember, people on foot do not always have the right of way in other countries.

Riding/Driving

Choose a safe vehicle.

Choose official taxis or public transportation, such as trains and buses.
Ride only in cars that have seatbelts.
Avoid overcrowded, overloaded, top-heavy buses and minivans.
Avoid riding on motorcycles or motorbikes, especially motorbike taxis. (Many crashes are caused by inexperienced motorbike drivers.)
Choose newer vehicles—they may have more safety features, such as airbags, and be more reliable.
Choose larger vehicles, which may provide more protection in crashes.

Think about the driver.

Do not drive after drinking alcohol or ride with someone who has been drinking.
Consider hiring a licensed, trained driver familiar with the area.
Arrange payment before departing.

Follow basic safety tips.

Wear a seatbelt at all times.
Sit in the back seat of cars and taxis.
When on motorbikes or bicycles, always wear a helmet. (Bring a helmet from home, if needed.)
Avoid driving at night; street lighting in certain parts of Thailand may be poor.
Do not use a cell phone or text while driving (illegal in many countries).
Travel during daylight hours only, especially in rural areas.
If you choose to drive a vehicle in Thailand, learn the local traffic laws and have the proper paperwork.
Get any driving permits and insurance you may need. Get an International Driving Permit (IDP). Carry the IDP and a US-issued driver's license at all times.
Check with your auto insurance policy's international coverage, and get more coverage if needed. Make sure you have liability insurance.
Avoid using local, unscheduled aircraft.
If possible, fly on larger planes (more than 30 seats); larger airplanes are more likely to have regular safety inspections.
Try to schedule flights during daylight hours and in good weather.

Just to make totally sure, I’m gonna ask this very simply: I have no vaccination papers. I have no negative Covid test. I have no travel insurance. Am I still allowed to enter Thailand?

Unless you are from one of the countries with yellow fever, you do not need to provide vaccination papers and are allowed to enter Thailand.

You cannot enter Thailand with any Australian visa. You will need to apply for a Thailand Tourist Visa to enter Thailand. If you’re coming to Thailand to study, you will need to apply for an Education Visa.

The unvaccinated or not fully vaccinated travellers without a negative test result within 72 hours of travel is required to follow the public health instructions and guidelines as deemed appropriate by the Health Control officer at the point of arrival.

Children under the age of 18 do not need a certificate of vaccination if they are travelling with fully vaccinated parents. If they travel with parents who are not fully vaccinated, they must present an RT-PCR / Professional ATK COVID-19 test result issued within 72 hours before departure.

The RT-PCR test and PCR test are different, however, any of those are accepted as long as it was issued by a certified Clinic or Hospital, containing personal information of the travelers and information of the vaccine (name, batch number, dates).

Entry, Exit and Visa Requirements

U.S. citizen tourists entering Thailand for fewer than 30 days do not require a visa.
We strongly recommend that your passport be valid for at least six months beyond the date of your arrival in Thailand to avoid possible denied entry.
Thai immigration officials or airline staff may ask for your onward/return ticket.
Business travelers, U.S. government employees travelling on official business, teachers, retirees, and those planning to stay longer than 30 days should check with the Royal Thai Embassy about visa requirements .
If you overstay your visa, you will be fined. Depending on the length of overstay, you may also be arrested, detained, deported at your own expense, and banned from re-entering Thailand.

We strongly recommend you carry a copy of your U.S. passport identification page and current Thai visa to help avoid detention by the Thai immigration police.

Safety and Security

Terrorism: Terrorist groups and those inspired by such organizations are intent on attacking U.S. citizens abroad. Terrorists are increasingly using less sophisticated methods of attack – including knives, firearms, and vehicles – to more effectively target crowds. Frequently, their aim is unprotected or vulnerable targets, such as:

High-profile public events (sporting contests, political rallies, demonstrations, holiday events, celebratory gatherings, etc.)
Hotels, clubs, and restaurants frequented by tourists
Places of worship
Shopping malls and markets
Public transportation systems (including subways, buses, trains, and scheduled commercial flights)

Periodic acts of violence in Thailand remain a concern. In August 2019, several small explosions and related arson events occurred in various locations throughout Bangkok resulting in no deaths but some injuries and minor property damage. Several small-scale bombings occurred near some tourist locations in the far Southern provinces in August 2016 and December 2018. In August 2015, an explosion near the Erawan Shrine in downtown Bangkok killed at least 20 people and injured more than 100. The U.S. Department of State assesses there is a continued risk of terrorism in Southeast Asia, including in Thailand.

If a protest or demonstration is expected to pass near the U.S. Embassy or Consulate facilities, Embassy and Consulate entrances and functions may be restricted. The U.S. Embassy in Bangkok’s website , Facebook, and Twitter sites and the U.S. Consulate General in Chiang Mai’s website , Facebook , and Twitter sites post information about local events that may affect Embassy functions. Far Southern Thailand: Periodic violence directed mostly at Thai government interests by a domestic insurgency continues to affect security in the southernmost provinces of Yala, Pattani, Narathiwat, and Songkhla. U.S. citizens are at risk of death or injury due to the possibility of indiscriminate attacks in public places. Martial law is in force in this region.

The U.S. government has limited ability to provide emergency services to U.S. citizens in these provinces. Travel to this region by U.S government employees must be reviewed and approved in advance. Crimes of opportunity, such as pick-pocketing, bag-snatching, and burglary, occur in Thailand.
Violent crimes against foreigners are relatively rare. However, murders, rapes, and assaults against foreigners do occur.
Sexually motivated violence, committed by either Thai citizens or foreigners, is most likely to occur after time spent at bars, clubs, and parties, on beaches, or in remote/isolated areas. The Thai police response will differ from an investigation in the United States; investigating officials have publicly discredited people who have reported being the victim of crimes . In addition to making a report at the police jurisdiction in which the crime occurred, we advise contacting the Embassy and engaging a local attorney if you are a victim of an assault.
When traveling alone, exercise caution, stay near other travelers, and ensure friends or family know how to contact you.
Taxi and “tuk-tuk” drivers may attempt to charge excessive fares or refuse passengers. You should either request the driver use the meter or agree on the fare beforehand.
At the airport use only public transportation from the airport’s official pick-up area, cars from the limousine counters, or a car from your hotel.
Rental scams do occur in Thailand. Many rental motorbike, jet ski, and car companies will hold your passport until you pay for real or fictitious damages. We advise against using your passport as collateral.
Exorbitant bar tab scams occur in Thailand. Some bars and entertainment venues will charge exorbitant prices for drinks or unadvertised cover charges and threaten violence if you don’t pay.
Other scams involving gems, city tours, entertainment venues, and credit cards are common, especially in tourist areas.

Internet romance and financial scams are prevalent in Thailand. Scams are often initiated through Internet postings/profiles or by unsolicited emails and letters. Scammers almost always pose as U.S. citizens who have no one else to turn to for help. Common scams include:

Tourism: The tourism industry is unevenly regulated, and safety inspections for equipment and facilities do not commonly occur. Hazardous areas/activities are not always identified with appropriate signage, and staff may not be trained or certified either by the host government or by recognized authorities in the field. In the event of an injury, appropriate medical treatment is typically available only in/near major cities. First responders are generally unable to access areas outside of major cities and to provide urgent medical treatment. U.S. citizens are encouraged to purchase medical evacuation insurance. Local Laws & Special Circumstances

Criminal Penalties: You are subject to local laws. If you violate local laws, even unknowingly, you may be expelled, arrested, or imprisoned. Individuals establishing a business or practicing a profession that requires additional permits or licensing should seek information from the competent local authorities, prior to practicing or operating a business.

Arrest Notification: If you are arrested or detained, ask police or prison officials to notify the U.S. Embassy immediately. See our webpage for further information.

Conditions at the Bangkok Immigration Detention Center (IDC): Conditions in immigration detention centers (IDCs) where authorities detain foreign nationals who violate immigration laws remain poor and most are overcrowded. IDCs, administered by the Immigration Police Bureau, which reports to the Royal Thai Police (RTP), are not subject to many of the regulations that govern the regular prison system. U.S. citizen detainees often complain of stark, austere living conditions, overcrowding, and unhealthy conditions. Personal security is poor. In addition, the main IDC in Bangkok does not dependably provide adequate medical or mental health care. In 2019, two U.S. citizens died while in custody at the Bangkok IDC. Deportations are self-funded and it may take up to two weeks for Thai authorities to process a case before deportation. Detainees must have funds to purchase a phone card and do not have access to the internet. Prior approval and a security escort are required to visit a Western Union or an ATM machine.

Lèse majesté (Royal Insult): Thais hold the monarchy in the highest regard. Making a critical or defamatory comment about the royal family is punishable by a prison sentence of up to 15 years per offense. As an example, purposely tearing Thai bank notes, which carry an image of the King, may be considered a lèse majesté offense.

Prostitution is illegal in Thailand. Serious consequences include criminal conviction and imprisonment, particularly in the case of child prostitution.
Commercial surrogacy is banned.
Personal use of even non-lethal military equipment, such as protective vests and night vision scopes, is prohibited.
Illegal drugs carry severe penalties. Expect long jail sentences under harsh conditions, heavy fines, or even execution for possessing, using, or trafficking in illegal drugs.
Shoplifting can result in large fines and lengthy detention followed by deportation.
Domestic Issues: Local police are reluctant to become involved in domestic issues. You may call the Family Services Emergency hotline by dialing 1300 from any Thai phone.
Possessing counterfeit or pirated goods is a crime in Thailand. For more information see the intellectual property section of the U.S. Department of Justice website .

Customs may enforce strict regulations on Buddha images, firearms, bullets and/or bullet casings, bullet-proof vests, night vision devices and other para-military type equipment, explosives, drugs, radios, books, and recordings, which might be cultural property and/or considered harmful to the public interest.

LGBTI Travelers: There are no known legal restrictions on same-sex sexual relations or the organization of LGBTI events in Thailand. However, LGBTI groups report that in the case of sexual crimes, police tend to downplay sexual abuse claims from LGBTI victims.

Travelers Who Require Accessibility Assistance. Sidewalks and street crossings are not suitable for travelers with mobility issues. Newly constructed buildings, facilities, and transportation equipment should be accessible by law for persons with mobility issues. However, enforcement of these provisions is not uniform.

Women Travelers: Some victims of sexual assault or domestic violence find that Thai authorities do not handle such cases with as much sensitivity or consideration for privacy as they would expect in the United States. See our travel tips for Women Travelers .

Ambulance services are:

not present throughout the country or are unreliable in most areas except for Bangkok and other major cities.
Injured or seriously ill travelers may prefer to take a taxi or private vehicle to the nearest major hospital rather than wait for an ambulance.

Medical treatment is generally adequate in Thailand’s urban areas. In Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket, and Pattaya, good facilities exist for routine, long-term, and emergency health care. Basic medical care is available in rural areas, but English-speaking providers are rare.

Medical tourism is an established and rapidly growing industry. You should consult with your local physician before traveling and also refer to information on medical tourism from CDC.

We do not pay medical bills. Be aware that U.S. Medicare/Medicaid does not apply overseas. Most hospitals and doctors overseas do not accept U.S. health insurance.

Medical Insurance: Make sure your health insurance plan provides coverage overseas. Most care providers overseas only accept cash payments. We strongly recommend supplemental insurance to cover medical evacuation.

Medicine for personal use is allowed as long as the amount does not exceed a 30-day supply and you bring the medicine with you. Do not mail medicine to Thailand without first confirming it will be allowed into the country.

If traveling with prescription medication, check with Thailand Customs and the Thailand Food and Drug Administration to ensure the medication is legal in Thailand. Always, carry your prescription medication in original packaging with your doctor’s prescription.

Air Quality: The air quality in Thailand varies considerably and fluctuates with the seasons, but seasonal smog is a problem. In recent years the air quality in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Khon Kaen, Lampang, Nan, and Samut Sakhon have exceeded Thai and U.S. government daily standards for fine particulate matter (PM 2.5) for a portion of the year. In Chiang Mai and other northern provinces, annual agricultural burning, approximately February through late April, and forest fires cause days with unhealthy to hazardous air quality based on the U.S. index. In Bangkok environs, airborne dust and auto pollutants are prevalent in the cooler, dry period (December-February). Anyone who travels where pollution levels are high is at risk. People at the greatest risk from air pollution exposure include:

Infants, children, and teens
People over 65 years of age
People with lung disease such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema;
People with heart disease
People who work or are active outdoors

The U.S. Embassy maintains a list of doctors and hospitals . We do not endorse or recommend any specific medical provider or clinic.

Health facilities in general:

Adequate health facilities are available in Bangkok and other major cities but health care in rural areas may be below U.S. standards.
Hospitals and doctors require payment “up front” prior to service or admission. Credit card payment is not always available.
Medical staff at public hospitals may speak little or no English.
Patients bear all costs for transfer to or between hospitals.
Psychological and psychiatric services are limited, even in the larger cities, with hospital-based care only available through government institutions.

Medical Tourism and Elective Surgery:

Medical tourism is a rapidly growing industry. People seeking health care overseas should understand that medical systems operate differently from those in the United States and are not subject to the same rules and regulations. Anyone interested in traveling for medical purposes should consult with their local physician before traveling and visit the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website for more information on Medical Tourism.
We strongly recommend supplemental insurance to cover medical evacuation in the event of unforeseen medical complications.
Your legal options in case of malpractice are very limited in Thailand.
Although Thailand has many elective/cosmetic surgery facilities that are on par with those found in the United States, the quality of care varies widely. If you plan to undergo surgery in Thailand, make sure that emergency medical facilities are available and professionals are accredited and qualified.

Pharmaceuticals:

Exercise caution when purchasing medication overseas. Pharmaceuticals, both over the counter and requiring prescription in the United States, are often readily available for purchase with little controls. Counterfeit medication is common and may prove to be ineffective, the wrong strength, or contain dangerous ingredients. Medication should be purchased in consultation with a medical professional and from reputable establishments.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the Food and Drug Administration are responsible for rules governing the transport of medication back to the United States. Medication purchased abroad must meet their requirements to be legally brought back into the United States. Medication should be for personal use and must be approved for usage in the United States. Assisted Reproductive Technology and Surrogacy:

If you are considering traveling to Thailand to have a child through use of assisted reproductive technology (ART) or surrogacy, please see our ART and Surrogacy Abroad page .
Surrogacy is illegal for foreigners in Thailand, subject to complex local regulation. For additional information, visit the Government of Thailand’s website for information on foreigner surrogacy.
If you decide to pursue parenthood in Thailand via assisted reproductive technology (ART) with a gestational mother, be prepared for long and unexpected delays in documenting your child’s citizenship. Be aware that individuals who attempt to circumvent local law risk criminal prosecution.

Water Quality:

In many areas, tap water is not potable. Bottled water and beverages are generally safe, although you should be aware that many restaurants and hotels serve tap water unless bottled water is specifically requested. Be aware that ice for drinks may be made using tap water.

COVID-19 Vaccines: The COVID-19 vaccine is available for U.S. citizens to receive in Thailand. According to Thai authorities, both private and public hospitals are providing COVID-19 vaccines. More information on a list of hospitals in Thailand is available here .

The Bang Rak Vaccination and Health Center, the Institute of Dermatology, and the Bamrasnaradura Infectious Diseases Institute are currently providing free bivalent vaccines to non-Thai citizens on a walk-in basis.

Travel and Transportation

Road Conditions and Safety:

Traffic accidents are common in Thailand. According to the World Health Organization , in 2018, Thailand had one of the world’s highest traffic-related fatality rates. Bangkok and some parts of Chiang Mai have heavy traffic.
Reckless driving: Speeding, reckless passing, and failure to obey other traffic laws are common in all regions of Thailand. Traffic moves on the left. Some drivers move illegally against the traffic. Scooters and motorbikes commonly drive on the sidewalks during rush hour and other periods of heavy traffic. Commercial drivers commonly consume alcohol, amphetamines, and other stimulants.
Accidents involving motorcycles can be deadly . Riders may incur serious injuries when they are not wearing helmets or proper clothing and footwear. According to the World Health Organization, in 2016, 74 percent of traffic fatalities involved riders of 2-and 3-wheeled vehicles. Use of motorcycle helmets is mandatory, but this law is sporadically enforced.
Use a pedestrian bridge to cross the road where one is available, including in front of the U.S. Embassy on Wireless Road and on Sukhumvit Road, where many pedestrians have been killed and several U.S. citizens seriously injured. Look carefully in both directions before crossing streets, even when using a marked crosswalk.
If you have a traffic accident, you should contact your insurance company for guidance in dealing with the other party and the police.
Emergency vehicles: Congested roads and a scarcity of ambulances can make it difficult for accident victims to receive timely medical attention

Traffic Laws:

Driving under influence is punishable by law . If you are found to be intoxicated, you could be jailed for a minimum of two years and subject to a fine.
Bribes are illegal. If you are found guilty, you could be imprisoned up to five years, face severe fines, or both.
Lack of ID.
Not obeying traffic laws and traffic signals.
Driving slowly in regular lanes of traffic.
If you are involved in a traffic accident, you should contact your auto insurance company for guidance .

Public Transportation:

Mass transit: In Bangkok, the BTS elevated "Skytrain," “Airport Rail Link” mass transit, and the underground MRT systems are reliable, inexpensive, air conditioned, and often faster than Bangkok traffic.
Bus system: Bangkok also has an extensive bus system, but buses can be overcrowded and are often driven with little or no regard for passenger safety.
For hire vehicles: Cities outside of Bangkok typically have only rudimentary public transportation and usually do not have metered taxis. In many cases, motorcycle taxis, tuk-tuks, bicycle-powered rickshaws, and pick-up trucks will be the only options available for travelers without their own transport.
Smartphone-based for-hire vehicle service exist in Bangkok and other large cities. Those affiliated with registered taxis, such as Grab Taxi, Line Taxi, and All Thai Taxi are legal, but their affiliated car services are under legal review.

Aviation Safety Oversight: The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has assessed the government of Thailand’s Civil Aviation Authority as not being in compliance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) aviation safety standards for oversight of Thailand’s air carrier operations. International Travel Update: Finally after so many months, Thailand has opened its border for international travellers from as many as 63 countries including India. This is due to the improving situation of Covid19 across the places. If you are planning a trip to this much preferred international destination, then check out the latest Covid-related guidelines here.

You must carry a certificate of Covid vaccination (fully vaccinated) with an approved vaccine at least 14 days before travelling.
Those previously infected within 3 months must have received at least 1 dose of an approved Covid vaccine at least 14 days before travelling to the nation.
Travellers under 12 years of age, flying with parents or guardians, are exempt from the vaccination requirement, according to a ToI’s report.
You must also carry a negative Covid RT-PCR test report no more than 72 hours before travelling (all travellers).
A confirmed payment for a 1-night stay at SHA+, AQ, OQ, or AHQ accommodation, and 1 RT-PCR test. Besides, an insurance policy with coverage no less than US$50,000.

Passengers flying to Nairobi, Kenya are required to vaccinate against Yellow Fever and Poliovirus, at least 4 weeks prior to departure, regardless of age and vaccination status. Ensure to present your vaccination certificates at the airport to avoid a 6-day quarantine period.

Family visit visa is valid only for a month and customer hold only the paper visa with nothing else.

FAMILY RESIDENCE VISA - Customer holding Family residence visa for Kuwait are allowed to travel on 6e to KWI. Family residence visa is identifiable with customer holding paper visa valid for 3, PCC, Medical stamp on visa and visa stamp on passport.

Non Bangladeshi Nationals holding any type of valid and/or pre-approved visa
Customers in possession of tourist visas shall be allowed to travel to Bangladesh
All customers arriving into Bangladesh are required to fill a self-health declaration form and submit the same to the health authorities upon arrival
All customers who are fully vaccinated with WHO approved vaccines (single/double dose as applicable for a full dose) are no longer required to be in possession of a pre-departure PCR while travelling to Bangladesh
Unvaccinated/partially vaccinated customers must carry a negative PCR certificate in printed form, from a government-approved laboratory in India (ICMR) or a certified designated laboratory which is available on https://www.icmr.gov.in/ issued no more than 72 hours before departure of the last direct flight to Dhaka. The certificate issued shall be duly signed and/or stamped by relevant authorities. 72 Hours is calculated from the time of sample collection
The negative PCR certificate held by the customer must have a QR code on it linking it to their original test report and must have the date and time of sample collection and the test result mentioned accurately. Customers holding a negative PCR certificate without a QR code shall be denied boarded at the origin station

Note: The following are exempted from pre-departure covid test

Children under the age of 12years
The certificate must be available in printed form to submit to health authorities upon arrival and shall be in English only, handwritten certificates are not permitted
All customers upon arrival shall be required to undergo mandatory 14 days home quarantine. However if any COVID-19 symptomatic passengers is observed/detected on arrival, he/she shall be sent to government authorized hospital for further formalities
Seamen shall be allowed to travel provided they are in possession of all necessary documents such as passport, CDC booklet, Guarantee letter, Ok to Board Letter and sign on to the ship maximum within 72 hours of their arrival
Foreign nationals of Bangladeshi descendant and their spouse & children;
Foreign citizen holding Diplomatic & Official passport;
Foreign Businessmen and Investors;
Foreign citizens joining in meetings/seminars/conferences/any other event invited by the Government of Bangladesh

With effect from 12 th February 23, all COVID 19 requirements are uplifted for travel to Singapore.
It is mandatory for all customers travelling to Singapore to submit their SGAC within 3 days before arrival in Singapore via https://eservices.ica.gov.sg/sgarrivalcard
A customer with no travel history in the last 7 consecutive days prior to their departure to Singapore, to any country classified under restricted category will not be required to serve SHN Notice upon entering Singapore, regardless of the customer’s vaccination status.
A customer with travel history to a restricted country may be required to serve a SHN (Stay Home Notice) or undergo COVID 19 testing or both. NOTE : As of 9 February 2023, there are no countries/regions in the Restricted Category

For customers from Singapore to India

Saudi Citizens
Non-Saudi Citizens (Resident (IQAMA Holder), Family Visit Visa, New Resident Visa, Business Visa, New Employment Visa, Umrah Visa) (Premium residency permit holders shall not be required to submit an exit/re-entry visa)

All passengers holding HAYYA CARD issued by Qatar are allowed to enter the kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
The HAYYA card entitles the passenger a stay of total 60 days which is 10 days before the tournament, 27 days during the tournament and followed by 23 days after the end of the tournament period.
The Visa is multi entry it can be used more than once, and pre entry the State of Qatar is not required.
It is mandatory for all passengers holding HAYYA card to obtain medical insurance for the visa period of 60 days.

Recommended vaccination :

Pilgrims with health conditions are recommended to update their vaccination status against vaccine-preventable diseases. These include vaccination against Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis, Polio, Measles, Varicella and Mumps.

Effective from 1 st August, No COVID Protocols to be followed by customers travelling from India to Malaysia, customers to be accepted as per normal procedures.
Customer travelling to Malaysia need to register online via Malaysia Digital Arrival Card website https://imigresen-online.imi.gov.my/mdac/main?registerMain and submit. Pax can register the earliest 3 days before departure date and this MANDATORY for all tourists coming to Malaysia.

For customers from Malaysia to India

For Customers from India to Vietnam

Vietnam is open to fully vaccinated and not fully vaccinated customers. However, customers must comply with certain requirements detailed below
Visa, permanent residence card, temporary residence card, or valid visa exemption certificate
Effective 15 th May, 2022 customers are no longer required to be in possession of negative Covid-19 test before travelling to Vietnam
There are no quarantine measures on all incoming customers irrespective of their vaccination status. However, all customers must monitor their health within 10 days of arrival and notify health authorities immediately if they develop COVID19 symptoms
If tested positive and placed under quarantine, customers will be required to download the contact tracing app PCCOVID and keep it active throughout the quarantine period
Customers are no longer required to purchase Travel health insurance.

For customers from Vietnam to India

Jakarta and Bali
Passports must be valid for a minimum of 6 months from the arrival date.
Nationals of India can obtain a visa on arrival for a maximum stay of 14 to 30 days. They can apply to extend their stay for an additional 30 days.
Passports and passport replacing documents of all non-Indonesian nationals must contain at least 1 unused visa page for entry/departure endorsements by the immigration. This does not include the page reserved for "Observations" or "Amendments and Endorsements".
Customers must hold return/onward tickets.

QR code is electronic Declaration form that must be filled in by the customers and crew using mobile phone before Custom clearance upon arrival in any international airport in Indonesia. This QR code banner is also available in baggage claim area in Indonesia.

After completing the electronic form, final QR code pops up on the screen/email which Customs will screen on their device prior exit.

General Guidance

Considered as fully vaccinated, if taken two dose vaccine (Pfizer, Sinopharm, Moderna, AstraZeneca etc) or recommended combination of vaccine (e.g. Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca) or if taken a single dose vaccines (e.g. Janssen etc.) and depart 14 days after obtaining the vaccine.
Persons who had obtained a single dose of two dose vaccine prior or post COVID 19 infection during past 6 months period.
COVID 19 vaccination (recommended doses) completed and
Departure 14 days after completing recommended doses of vaccination for COVID 19.
Do not require to produce upon arrival to Sri Lanka
It is strongly recommended to have the vaccination certificate with the traveller during the stay in Sri Lanka to produce to the Medical personnel when and if required.
Pre departure testing for COVID 19 is not required.
If a traveller shows COVID 19 like symptoms and signs, you may subjected for PCR/RA testing by an authorized Medical personnel.
Hospitalization Insurance Cover is no longer required.
If Foreign Nationals/tourists become COVID 19 positive after arriving to Sri Lanka, they should isolate for 7 days in a private hospital/hotel/place of residence. The cost of treatment/isolation should be borne by foreign nationals/tourists.

For customers from Colombo to India

All Foreign nationals intending to visit India for tourism purpose will be allowed to enter into India on e-Tourist/ Tourist Visa through chartered flight (for Group tourism only) from 15 th October, 2021
All Individual foreign nationals intending to visit India for tourism purposes will be allowed to enter into India on e-Tourist visa/Tourist Visa with effect from 15 th November, 2021
This tourist Visa facility would be applicable only to Tourist Visa/e-Tourist Visa issued on or after 06 th October, 2021
e-Tourist Visa under the three options (one month, one year) and five years provided in para 2.5 (i) of the Visa Manual 2019, which remained suspended since March 2020, shall stand restored to nationals of 156 countries as indicated in Annex. I to this Ministry's O.M. of even number dated 30.03.2021 with immediate effect. Nationals of these 156 countries will also be eligible for issuance of fresh e-Tourist visa as per Para 2.5(i) of the Visa Manual, 2019
Regular (Paper) valid Tourist visa issued to foreign nationals of all countries which remained suspended since March 2020 shall stand restored except for nationals of China. Fresh Regular (paper) Tourist Visa are also allowed to be issued by the Indian Missions/posts abroad to all foreign nationals (except for nationals of China) as per provisions contained in Chapter 10 of the Visa manual 2019
Old valid Long duration (10 years) Regular Tourist Visa shall stand restored only for the nationals of USA and Japan. Fresh Long duration 10 year Tourist Visa can also be issued to the nationals of USA and Japan. Canadian nationals will be eligible for fresh Regular Tourist Visa except 10year long duration Tourist Visa. Long duration Regular Tourist Visa issued to Canadian nationals before March 2020 will continue to remain suspended and they would not be eligible for fresh Long duration visa of 10years validity
The foreign nationals on Tourist /e-Tourist Visas would be permitted to enter India only through designated Sea Immigration Check Posts (ICPs) or Airport ICPs by flights, including those under the Vande Bharat Mission or 'air bubble' scheme or by any flights as allowed by the DGCA or Ministry of Civil Aviation. In no case the foreign nationals will be allowed to enter through Land border or riverine routes on Tourist Visa/e-Tourist Visa. Order for opening of Land ICPs and riverine routes will be communicated separately
Medical visas must be issued after 21 st October, 2020
Tourist Visa/ e-Tourist Visa of foreign nationals have to be utilised within 120 days from the date of issue of such visa/ETA

The Best Time to Book a Flight for Domestic, International, and Summer Travel

Here are our best tips for booking travel in 2024.

When to Book Flights for Domestic Travel

Buying plane tickets is something of an art form. Ideally, you want to secure your spot months in advance to avoid the inevitable price spike as your travel dates get closer. But sometimes the best time to book a flight also depends on the destination and whether it's domestic or abroad. The trends are always changing, but experts say the sweet spot for booking domestic flights is 28 days, or 60 days for international flights.

Flights generally open for booking about a year ahead of time, and the airfare will change often between then and takeoff. Although you can book just a couple of weeks before the departure date in some cases, prices are likely to be astronomical. In other cases, when you want to go somewhere popular or during a big travel weekend, flights could fill up faster than normal. Our advice: Track flight prices on Google Flights or Hopper as early as possible so you can keep an eye on cost fluctuations. Read on for more advice about when to book flights from the pros.

According to Expedia's 2024 Air Travel Hacks report , you should aim to book 28 days before your domestic flight. "Doing so can save travelers up to 24 percent compared to those who wait until the last minute, from zero to six days out," Expedia travel expert Christie Hudson tells Travel + Leisure.

For domestic trips, pricing is elevated when tickets are first released, about a year before the flight. Those prices will slowly creep downward, all the way to their lowest point in the prime booking window, after which you'll likely see a huge increase in cost for last-minute travel.

Meet the Expert

Christie Hudson is a travel expert at top booking site Expedia.

You're better off booking earlier rather than later for international travel, but the Expedia report says ideally no more than four months before your desired departure date. The sweet spot is around 60 days. "This is a big change from 2022 data, which showed the cheapest fares were secured when travelers booked four to six months out." Hudson says. "2023 data revealed that people who booked that far in advance actually paid more on average." The report says the least expensive day of the week to book is Sunday and the most expensive is Friday, for both domestic and international travel.

But there is some regional variance. Going , a platform that tracks flight prices and notifies members of good deals, has found the best months to book flights to Africa, Asia, Oceania, Europe, and Latin America, for travel about 60 days out. Here's what it says.

Africa: Book in May.

Asia: Book in August or October, followed by April or September.

Oceania: Book in November, January, or July.

Europe: Book in August, October, or November.

Latin America: Book in October.

The real trick to finding good deals on international airfare is to avoid booking your travel for peak times, which include summer and major holidays (don't forget — that includes holidays in your destination, too).

Summer is traditionally one of the most popular times of the year to travel, which means it can be tough to find a good deal on airfare. Ideally, you should book flights for summer travel as soon as possible, preferably at least six months in advance.

"The best time to book for peak season is … the opposite season," says Katy Nastro, travel expert at Going. "While most of us are scrambling to focus on our winter holiday plans, we should also keep our eyes open for some great summer fares."

She notes that the booking window for peak season ranges between three and seven months for domestic flights and four to 10 months for international trips. "And if you do book something, keep that flight alert on," says Nastro. "If it drops again, depending on your ticket type, you can call to rebook and get a refund or travel credit back with the difference."

Katy Nastro is a travel expert at Going, a website that finds flight deals to more than 900 destinations around the world.

Around the winter holidays is the priciest time to travel, Nastro says. "Your best bet is to remember the Goldilocks zones: look to book between three to seven months ahead for domestic travel and four to 10 months ahead for international travel."

Hudson advises that at the very latest, your holiday travel should be booked by mid-October. "But the biggest holiday travel savings actually come from choosing the right dates," she says. "Avoiding the busiest days like the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and the Friday and Saturday before Christmas will yield major savings."

Track flights and book your holiday tickets as soon as you find a decent deal, but make sure to book a fare that will give you a credit if you cancel (generally speaking, that means don't book basic economy). That way, if prices drop between the time of booking and your travel dates, you can cancel your original ticket and use the credit to book the cheaper fare. The only downside is you'll still have some remaining credit, but you can then use it to treat yourself to a future flight. Just don't let that credit expire.

Asian equities were largely higher except for small losses in Singapore, Thailand, and India.

President Xi gave a speech reiterating China’s reform and opening up policy, following up on Premier Li’s speech at the Summer Davos Forum, stating “China will only open itself ever wider to the outside World.” The PBOC’s quarterly Monetary Policy Committee meeting noted China’s economy “continues to rebound and improve” despite “challenges such as insufficient effective demand and weak social expectations”. This is good counsel for government leaders with the Third Plenum meetings only two weeks away.

Hong Kong and Mainland China opened lower, rose, and then eased, coming off of intra-day highs. Hong Kong-listed growth stocks were down, but not nearly as much as US-listed China stocks on Thursday. This was on no news. It is hard to explain yesterday’s ADR meltdown, though Asian investors clearly did not share the pessimism. Hong Kong’s most heavily traded stocks by value were Tencent, which fell -0.53% versus its over-the-counter US listing, which was down -1.8% yesterday in US trading, Meituan, which fell -2.29% versus its unsponsored ADR, which fell -2.93%, China Mobile, which gained +2.67%, Alibaba, which fell -1.47% versus the ADR, which fell -2.43%, and China Construction Bank, which gained +0.87%. JD.com was off -2.09% in Hong Kong versus its ADR, which was down -4.54% yesterday. NetEase fell -0.8% versus its ADR, which fell -0.70%, Trip.com gained +0.32% versus its ADR, which fell -2.8%, Bilibili gained +0.16% versus its ADR, which fell -2.86%, and Baidu fell -0.99% versus its ADR, which fell -1.34%. Mainland investors bought a healthy net $468 million worth of Hong Kong-listed stocks and ETFs overnight.

Nike’s financial results weighed on its supply chain despite their China revenue increasing while North America decreased. Local competitor Anta Sports fell -1.57% after a profit warning.

Mainland China managed small gains off intra-day highs as the Mainland-listed China equity ETFs favored by the National Team saw above slightly average volumes. Mainland growth stocks were off, including CATL, which fell -2.69%, and Kweichow Moutai, which fell -1.55. Broker East Money fell -6.88% on no news, weighing on the brokerage space. Energy, utilities, and industrials had a strong day.

Mainland buying of Hong Kong-listed stocks continues with $47 billion worth of net buying via Southbound Stock Connect overnight. This exceeds the $40 billion worth of net buying in 2023. Why are these investors buying?

China internet and growth companies are buying stock and paying dividends. If China’s economy was collapsing, why would the companies be buying back stock? If the companies’ prospects were so bleak, why would they be buying back stock? They would be hoarding cash! The founder of nearly every KWEB company is the CEO or Chairperson. Why do they care about the stock? Because their net worth is in the stock.

The Hang Seng and Hang Seng Tech indexes diverged to close +0.01% and -0.96%, respectively, on volume that decreased -5.12% from yesterday, which is 96% of the 1-year average. 250 stocks advanced while 216 stocks declined. Main Board short turnover declined -15.88% from yesterday, which is 82% of the 1-year average, as 15% of turnover was short turnover (Hong Kong short turnover includes ETF short volume, which is driven by market makers’ ETF hedging). The value factor and large caps outperformed the growth factor and small caps. The top-performing sectors were Energy, which gained +2.98%, Industrials, which gained +2.44%, and Materials, which gained +2.28%. Meanwhile, Health Care fell -1.35%, Consumer Discretionary fell -1.26%, and Consumer Staples fell -0.95%. The top-performing subsectors were energy, foodstuffs, and utilities. Meanwhile, retail, insurance, and diversified financials were among the worst-performing. Southbound Stock Connect volumes were light as Mainland investors bought as net $468 million worth of Hong Kong-listed stocks and ETFs, including China Mobile, China Construction Bank, and ICBC, which were small net buys.

Shanghai, Shenzhen, and the STAR Board diverged to close +0.73%, +0.25%, and -0.46%, respectively, on volume that increased +12% from yesterday, which is 84% of the 1-year average. 3,299 stocks advanced while 1,641 declined. Value and large caps outperformed growth and small caps. The top-performing sectors were Energy, which gained +2.47%, Utilities, which gained +1.95%, and Industrials, which gained +1.17%. Meanwhile, consumer staples fell -1.27%, real estate fell -0.90%, and health care fell -0.83%, to make up the worst-performing subsectors. The top-performing subsectors were precious metals, oil & gas, and aerospace. Meanwhile, securities, liquor, and software were among the worst-performing. Northbound Stock Connect volumes were light/moderate as foreign investors were small net buyers. CNY managed a small gain versus the US dollar. The Treasury curve flattened slightly. Copper gained while steel fell.
