Ah, summer camp — it’s a great chance for young people to meet new friends, make lasting memories, and get out of their comfort zone. If you have the bad luck to be living in the horror genre, it’s also a place where you’re likely to get ax-murdered or mauled by a feral beast.

Supermassive Games’ The Quarry is set at one such modern-day summer camp, nestled in the isolated Hackett’s Quarry. After a fantastic summer, seven teen counselors are getting ready to pack up and head home. Their van breaks down, though, and they have to stay an extra night. Their last-minute celebratory bash turns into a blood-soaked horror movie, and it’s up to you to affect who lives, who dies, and how traumatized the survivors are. The Quarry has a memorable cast, each of whom commit to the cheesy bit, portrayed by the likes of David Arquette, Ted Raimi, Miles Robbins, Evan Evagora, Ariel Winter, Brenda Song, Halston Sage, and more.

The Quarry is essentially a series of cutscenes in which players get to choose between branching options from several characters’ points of view. Supermassive allows the player enough agency to affect the story, but not enough to break it entirely. For instance: One counselor, Jacob, decides to sabotage the old van out of Hackett’s Quarry so he can have one more night in which he can woo Emma, an aloof influencer who only wants a summer fling. As the player, I don’t get to stop Jacob, but I get to choose whether he takes the rotary arm or cuts the fuel line. These decisions build off of one another, spinning the story down a dizzying web of paths.

These binary choices are punctuated by quick-time sequences in which a character needs to duck under a branch, dodge the swipe of claws, or grab a valuable item. Some high-tension fights or chase scenes employ several of these events in a row, and they can make for edge-of-your-seat sequences as you try to save the counselor in the crosshairs. There are also ample ways to simplify these challenges, including an auto-pass option. There’s even a movie mode with “everyone lives,” “everyone dies,” and “gorefest” cuts, for those who just want to watch the brutal action unfold.

Laura chooses whether she would like to use a hammer or a wrench for the task at hand in The Quarry

The Quarry slows down to allow exploration sequences, and these are the low points of the game; the camera suddenly swings to a different perspective, reversing W and S on my keyboard, making my character do a 180 back to the previous shot. Characters also feel slow and bulky during these scenes, despite being spry and nimble during quick-time events. The game clearly wants me to pore over each room I enter to find hidden secrets and puzzles, but it’s so awkward to do the rounds that the process breaks my immersion. As if to compensate, clues are highlighted with a bright beam of light, which is a helpful but vivid reminder that this is, in fact, a video game.

The environments and props are gorgeously rendered, but my frustration over the controls negates that gravitas; I’d rather have options that auto-steered me on a guided tour through the sequence than ones that skip the quick-time events. It’s an odd step back for Supermassive, which has improved on third-person exploration in each iteration of its previous series, the Dark Pictures Anthology.

The Quarry is distinct from the Dark Pictures games; it’s instead meant to succeed Supermassive’s first big hit, Until Dawn . The cast is larger — and less individually developed — than those of the anthology, instead focusing on fun horror archetypes. Jacob is a sensitive himbo who’s crushing on Emma, an influencer straight out of Riverdale . Shy but handsome Nick and bookworm Abi are mutually crushing, while DJ Dylan, jokester and sharpshooter Kaitlyn, and responsible head counselor Ryan are in a flirtatious love triangle.

Abigail, a young woman and counselor at Hackett’s Quarry, portrayed by Ariel Winter in The Quarry

Supermassive doesn’t plumb the depths of these characters, because they’re not the main attraction of the story. In order to keep the plot moving forward and fire off each clue from its Chekhovian arsenal, The Quarry ’s characters are scraped pretty thin.

You can either cheer these kids toward success, encouraging them to be the best possible version of themselves
or be the shoulder devil that pushes them into conflict, pettiness, and spite, and relish in their eventual mauling and/or death. Add in the antagonists (a cadre of sinister hunters and a horrifying humanoid creature) and their relationship to the mysterious Mr. Hackett, and the plot quickly becomes enticing.

Supermassive manages to pull these assorted plot threads off well, sewing them into a blood-soaked scarf despite all the variables at play. The teens start out in a simple struggle to survive before uncovering the true stakes at play, and then have to conjure a long-term plan. With each successive answer, new mysteries arise. The resolution drives the player toward new questions, and each round is compellingly resolved.

The Quarry is about 10 hours long, and it’s the sort of game that can’t be seen all the way through in just one go. However, the game tracks the main “decision paths” that can alter a playthrough, so you can check and see what butterfly flap might have caused a particular hurricane you want to avoid next time around. It’s an excellent storytelling trick.

A hunter in denim overalls stands menacingly in a dark forest in The Quarry

What’s more, the presentation of it all is fantastic, from the ’80s-style surveillance technology aesthetics of the menus to the way tutorials are presented in old-school retro animations, a la the Fallout PSAs. There are even chapter breaks where you visit with an unsettling older lady who hints at the wider questions of the setting and the Quarry that help maintain an eerie, unsettling mood — even after an action scene or a comic tension-breaker.

Unfortunately, The Quarry ’s central monster doesn’t stand up to the player’s scrutiny. At one point, the beast gets a big cinematic reveal, exploding out of a body in a shower of gore, in a sequence that doesn’t make sense — and gets worse each time it’s repeated. The supernatural creature comes with a list of rules that aren’t always conveyed well visually. The results are more corny than scary.

Being a little bit corny does feel like the point, though. The game has clearly taken inspiration from ’80s horror and slasher classics. It’s just a shame that The Quarry is better to watch than play. I’m sure I missed some secrets back in Hackett’s Quarry, just because I stumbled past them as I tried to trawl the woods and cabins with frustrating controls. As long as you can tolerate the moments where the veil slips and the story’s illusion momentarily breaks, there’s a great horror story to enjoy, full of satisfying twists, creepy characters, and tantalizing mysteries.

The Quarry will be released on June 10 for Windows PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X. Prologue [ ]

On June 24-25, 2021, Laura and Max , new counselors at Hackett's Quarry summer camp, drive down the route to camp one night before its opening to check things out. Trying to avoid hitting an unknown creature that suddenly appeared on the road, the two turn off the route and crash into the woods. They are found by the local county sheriff, Travis , who becomes suspicious of their situation. Upon learning that the couple is going to Hackett's Quarry, Travis orders Laura and Max to spend the night at a motel nearby, but the two, distrusting the sheriff because of his strange behavior, drive to the camp anyway.

Arriving at the camp, Laura and Max find it completely empty. As they are about to leave, Laura notices someone in a closed bunker. Thinking the person inside needs help, the pair break into the bunker when Max is attacked by an unknown creature. Laura tries to escape, but she is sedated by Travis, who then shoots the monster.

Present Day [ ]

Two months later, on August 22, Hackett's Quarry closes. With all the campers gone, counselors Ryan , Kaitlyn , Dylan , Emma , Jacob , Abigail , and Nick are preparing to leave as well. However, they find that the van doesn't work as Jacob secretly sabotaged the engine to spend another night with Emma, who is his summer fling. Camp owner Chris Hackett leaves in a hurry, warning the counselors to spend the night in the lodge and not to go outside under any circumstances. The group ignores the request and instead decides to have a bonfire party to celebrate the last night at camp. However, during a game of Truth or Dare, when Emma is dared to kiss Jacob or Nick, Abi's crush, she chooses the latter, prompting Jacob and Abigail to storm off. Emma goes after Jacob and Nick goes after Abigail while Kaitlyn, Dylan and Ryan stay by the fire.

Nick finds Abigail in the woods when the two are attacked by an unknown creature that bites Nick. Leaving him and the girls at the lodge to recover, Ryan and Dylan head to the radio cabin to broadcast their distress, following the power outage at the lodge. However, the group at the lodge is soon ambushed by hunter Bobby , prompting the trio to follow the boys. The counselors hear gunshots in the pool house where they discover the body of Kaylee Hackett , Chris's daughter who supposedly left the camp with her brother Caleb a long time ago. Nick's condition begins to worsen and culminates in him turning into a monster and escaping into the woods, possibly killing Abigail beforehand. Immediately afterwards, the group runs into a woman who turns out to be Laura.

Emma finds Jacob in the boathouse and tries to cheer him up by suggesting to spend one last night together swimming in the lake. Their moment gets interrupted when Jacob hears Abigail's screams and runs into the woods to help her, leaving Emma alone. She swims to an island in the middle of the lake and reaches the treehouse , where she is attacked by a monster who possibly kills her. Escaping from the island, Emma reunites with Jacob only to be separated once again as they are chased by another monster. While Emma successfully makes it to the lodge and hides in the van, Jacob ends up captured by another hunter Jedediah .

Laura explains to the group what happened to her and Max two months ago. The two were imprisoned by Travis, who turns out to be Chris' brother. They also learn that the Hackett family has been fighting a curse for years which turns Chris and his children Caleb and Kaylee into werewolves , and that Max was also cursed following an attack in the bunker. A couple of hours before the game, the pair manage to escape and now Laura tries to kill Chris to cure Max since the curse can be revoked only by killing the infecting werewolf under a full moon. She then explains that she left Max on the island (revealing that he is the werewolf who attacked Emma) and finding him still uncured, realized that she killed the wrong werewolf, who turned out to be Kaylee.

Laura sets out to find Chris, with Ryan deciding to accompany her. The two head toward the Hackett residence (where they also find and free Jacob), where they confront Jedediah, his wife Constance , and Bobby, who are revealed to be Chris' and Travis' parents and brother respectively. During the fight, the werewolf Chris appears, attacking his family and Laura and Ryan, who gets the opportunity to shoot Chris. Meanwhile, Kaitlyn, Dylan and Abigail return to the lodge and are reunited with Emma. While the girls hide in the bunker, Kaitlyn and Dylan go to a scrapyard to find a working car when they are attacked by a werewolf Caleb, who possibly kills Dylan/Kaitlyn. When their plan fails, the two return to the lodge where they once again are ambushed by Caleb. A chase ensues in which the protagonists manage to defeat the werewolf.

If Ryan, Laura, and Travis survive the fight, Travis may reveal to them that to end the curse permanently, they must kill its progenitor Silas - the son of the fortune teller Eliza , who has been guiding the player using tarot cards. As they approach the forest, Travis explains the curse of the Hackett family: six years ago, in 2015, their family visited a freak show called " Harum Scarum ". Caleb and Kaylee tried to free Silas, but ended up burning down the whole sideshow and killing everyone, including Eliza. Silas bit Caleb, who in turn passed the curse onto Chris and Kaylee. Finding the ruins of the show as Silas' lair, the trio encounters the werewolf and shoots him, ending the curse for good.

As the day breaks, the police arrive at the camp, finding all the survivors and the dead. In a post-credits scene, an episode of the paranormal podcast" Bizarre Yet Bonafide " plays, in which hosts Grace and Anton discuss the events at Hackett's Quarry, examining the evidence the player has collected.

Gameplay [ ]

The Quarry is a cinematic game played from a third-person perspective in which the player controls nine teenagers as they try to survive a night at Hackett's Quarry summer camp. Throughout the game, players will have to make difficult decisions with different consequences, such as changing the relationships between the characters or their deaths. The most important decisions that significantly affect the course of the game are recorded and updated as the game progresses. Due to the game's branching storyline, it has 186 different endings, affected by the status of the protagonists and several supporting characters.

The Quarry has a strict auto-save system which prevents players from returning to an earlier point in the game if they regret their choices. However, after the first playthrough, the player unlocks " Death Rewind ", which allows the player to undo three protagonist deaths in each subsequent playthrough. The main gameplay is focused on exploration, quick-time events and discovering clues , as well as evidence , which determine the public's perception of events that occurred at Hackett's Quarry.

The game features local and online multiplayer. In local multiplayer, players take turns to control different characters, while in the online mode, seven other participating players can vote in key decisions. The game also features a movie mode in which the player can set personality traits of the protagonists that affect their behavior in the game, and then let the story play out.

Downloadable Content [ ]

The quarry: deluxe edition [ ].

In addition to the game, the deluxe edition features instant access to Death Rewind, "Gorefest" scenario for Movie Mode, a set of 80s-themed outfits, and a pack of visual filters replicating a different era and style of horror movies.

Character Outfits [ ]

Costume sets that allow the player to dress the protagonists in outfits made in the style of different eras.

  • The ‘80s Throwback Character Outfits DLC came with the Deluxe Edition, being available in July 8, 2022 and allowed to dress the protagonists in 80's-themed outfits.
  • The ‘50s Throwback Character Outfits DLC was released in October 24, 2022 and allows to dress the protagonists in 50's-themed outfits.

Development [ ]

The Quarry was officially announced on March 18th 2022 with an announcement trailer on 2K Games official channel [1] . It was initially planned to be a Stadia exclusive, but ultimately did not release on the platform due to Google cancelling its plans for first-party titles in February 2021.

The game is heavily inspired by teen slasher and monster films, and adheres to established horror movie tropes more firmly than The Dark Pictures Anthology , Supermassive 's other horror franchise. Creative director Will Byles added that while the game is set in modern times, the setting has a very 80s vibe, citing movies including Sleepaway Camp and Friday the 13th as major sources of inspiration. Supermassive was also influenced by films such as Evil Dead , The Thing , The Hills Have Eyes , The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Deliverance .

The team wanted the game to feature horror movie tropes from different eras, and Byles went on to compare the game to a horror theme park. While the game pays homage to various horror films, the team learnt from their experience making Until Dawn , allowing the team to build up players' fear through creating tension rather than relying heavily on jump scares.

While Until Dawn was designed to be a solo experience, the team found that players like to play in small groups, and acknowledged that the game was popular for people to simply watch. Therefore, The Quarry introduced a Movie mode, expanding the multiplayer options introduced in previous Supermassive games in order to appeal to people who would simply like to watch the story. The accessibility options were also designed to cater to more casual gamers who may not be experienced in playing games. When compared to The Dark Pictures Anthology , The Quarry was designed for a broader audience and had a smaller focus on gameplay.

As the spiritual successor to 2015’s PS4 hit Until Dawn, Supermassive Games’ The Quarry has some rather big, bloodstained boots to fill. Like its predecessor, The Quarry bills itself as an interactive teen slasher movie. It’s a label that the game proudly wears on its torn sleeve, not shying away from the tried and true tropes of the popular horror subgenre.

The setting of Hackett’s Quarry - a summer camp located in the backwoods of upstate New York - is immediately evocative of Friday the 13th. And that’s totally by design. Our nine unlucky teenage campers find themselves struggling to survive unspeakable horrors of all kinds as an impromptu final night of partying goes deathly south.

The name of the game becomes a perfect synonym, then. It’s not only the backdrop, but what our protagonists become over the course of the narrative. They’re being hunted, and it’s your quick wits and decision making that’ll help them stick it out, or meet a sticky end.

With a little help from my friends

The Quarry cast looking into the near distance

As a character-driven narrative, The Quarry risks coming across as trite and unfulfilling. After all, many of the main characters fit typical horror tropes. There’s the cocksure jock, the shy introvert, and the well-reasoned, cautious type – the triumvirate that fill out many a slasher flick.

Thankfully, The Quarry isn’t content with leaving things at that. For the most part, it builds its characters well above those archetypal foundations to create a group that’s likable, unpredictable and at times fairly nuanced.

That’s thanks in no small part to the solid script, but also surprisingly excellent performances from The Quarry’s ensemble cast of Hollywood talent. Actors including Ariel Winter, Brenda Song, Justice Smith and Miles Robbins give wonderfully believable turns as carefree teenagers well out of their depth. Meanwhile, veteran stars like Ted Raimi, Lance Henriksen and Lin Shaye portray marvelously creepy characters whose motives remain mysterious for a large chunk of the story.

Special mention, though, has to go to Grace Zabriskie, playing a wonderfully off-kilter fortune teller, Eliza, who you’ll visit between chapters. Her role is somewhat analogous to that of Peter Stormare’s character from Until Dawn – albeit less judgmental of your decisions and more foreboding when it comes to how events might play out.

Curious curios

Grace Zabriskie playing Eliza in The Quarry

Eliza’s role in the narrative ties into one of The Quarry’s many types of collectible: tarot cards. Throughout the game, you can find a total of 22 of these cards strewn throughout the environment, one for each major arcana in a typical tarot deck.

When you visit Eliza at the close of a chapter, she’ll allow you to choose one found tarot card to witness a future event in the story. These moments are brief, but can offer clues as to how you can use certain items you find, or avoid a grisly death befalling one of the teen counselors.

Speaking of collectibles, it’s not just tarot cards you’ll be scouring environments for. There are all manner of objects tucked away across the breadth of Hackett’s Quarry. These items will expand the lore of The Quarry, or better yet, can enable you to discover decisions or plot threads that wouldn’t have occurred otherwise.

As such, anytime you gain full control of a counselor, that’s your cue to search each area thoroughly. And while missing collectibles can be frustrating, they’re a strong incentive for completionists to replay The Quarry and explore alternative story paths.

These boots weren't made for walkin'

The Quarry prologue scene with Laura and Max

Frustratingly, on-foot controls in The Quarry share many of the same setbacks as Until Dawn. Outside of action scenes, character movement is fairly slow. You can speed up ever so slightly thanks to a dedicated ‘power walk’ button, but this ponderous pace can make combing each area for secrets a laborious task, especially when moving up or down stairs, which is unnecessarily glacial.

General navigation can also feel quite stiff and sluggish. Fixed camera angles ensure the game’s cinematography is on point, but mean it’s all too common to have your character become awkwardly caught on a piece of scenery you may not have seen. And in an unusual touch of realism, your character won’t just turn on a dime.

Compounding the problems with motor control are the prompts to examine objects in the environment, which can be finicky. You’ll occasionally be standing over or near an item of interest, yet no prompt will appear. In such cases, you’ll need to fidget your character around until the prompt shows up. It doesn’t happen often, but can slash the tension when it does.

Certain decisions may seem insignificant at first, but can come back to either benefit or bite you much later in the story.

By and large, though, these control issues are salvaged by their responsiveness in other areas. In particular, the action-heavy set pieces and other contextual quicktime events feel much more polished. And as a result, the steady flow of the story is kept intact when it matters most.

On the topic of such set pieces, these broadly take movement controls away from your character in favor of quicktime events. These are wholly unintrusive, and contextually make sense with whatever’s happening on-screen. There’ll also be times when you need to aim and shoot a weapon in the allotted time, or hold your breath to avoid a lurking threat. Such scenarios aren’t terribly difficult, but are nonetheless incredibly tense.

Walk the Path

The Quarry screenshot featuring David Arquette as Chris Hackett

The final, but perhaps most crucial element of control lies in The Quarry’s decision making. You’ll often be presented with two choices as to how to respond to something, or how to act in the moment. Many of these decisions activate the Path Chosen system. That’s The Quarry’s branching narrative feature, and is comparable to Until Dawn’s butterfly effect.

Certain decisions may seem insignificant at first, but can come back to either benefit or bite you much later in the story. The weightiest decisions and failed QTEs can lead to a character’s death. Such events can be undone by The Quarry’s new Death Rewind feature, which is on by default, and allows you to retry a segment in order to save that character’s life. However, I’d highly recommend switching this feature off for your first playthrough. While literally a lifesaver on repeat playthroughs, I felt it somewhat cheapened the experience of the first blind run if I could simply alter a character’s grisly fate on the fly.

The Path Chosen segments are recorded in their own section of the pause menu, and are all charmingly represented by schlocky VHS box art depicting the characters and events of the game. These will update periodically as you progress, serving as a reminder of how your earliest choices impacted events much later in the story.

A location to die for

The Quarry protagonist Ryan

Spearheading The Quarry’s filmic presentation are undoubtedly the exceptional visuals. Environments are as stunning as they are atmospheric. From sweeping lakeside vistas to little touches like light particles flittering through a sun-soaked cabin, almost every area you visit in The Quarry is packed with detail.

Characters are remarkably photorealistic, but rarely – if ever – stray into uncanny valley territory. Reactions and facial expressions appear natural, and little flourishes like furrowed brows and puckered lips really help flesh out characters in non-verbal ways.

Being an interactive slasher flick, you’d also expect The Quarry to be overflowing with buckets of blood and gore. On that front, the game doesn’t disappoint, and the small touches here really help to ground The Quarry firmly in its schlocky roots.

If you love games that prioritize an interactive narrative experience, The Quarry is a must-play. Not only is Supermassive’s latest game more than capable of following in Until Dawn’s unpredictable footsteps, it’s able to surpass its predecessor with aplomb – despite the control issues that continue to haunt its developer.

It’s certainly not for the squeamish or easily startled, but The Quarry is a superbly refreshing take on the studio’s narrative-driven formula, and will have you clawing back to be murdered once again, even after the credits roll.

The Quarry: Everything You Need to Know About Tarot Cards

T he survival horror game The Quarry pits you as nine summer camp counselors as they look to survive the night (well, over two months for a pair of counselors) at Hackett's Quarry Summer Camp. Between each chapter, you'll embody an unseen entity as they speak to Eliza Vorez (voiced and played by Grace Zabriskie), a tarot card reader. Tarot cards serve a specific and unique function in The Quarry, and they also have a connection to the story.

Below, you'll find everything you need to know about tarot cards in The Quarry . There are a total of 22 tarot cards to find throughout the game, though it will likely take multiple runs of the ten-hour game to find all 22 (not to mention all trophies and achievements).

What are tarot cards in The Quarry?

Tarot cards are the mementos of Eliza Vorez , who ran the Harum Scarum show. You should come across some Harum Scarum items as early as the Prologue with Laura, but throughout the rest of the game as well. Eliza (as she's referred to in the game) would give tarot readings at these shows. Spoiler alert: she is "The Hag of Hackett's Quarry."

After she died in a fire six years ago, her tarot cards drifted in the wind. Fortunately and coincidentally, they're found all over Hackett's Quarry only; just how did some of these end up in the rum running cellars of the Hackett's? You'll know a tarot card is collectible when the camera changes to a far view of your character and instead foregrounds a card. Hit X or A to collect.

If you wait too long and it goes back to a close third-person view, simply move and reenter the area to trigger the tarot card collection. Hit X or A here to collect, then hit L1 or LB when prompted to view the card and associated description.

What do tarot cards do in The Quarry?

Tarot cards allow you to view a few seconds of a possible outcome in the next chapter . The scene will be based on the type of tarot card you select, so it's recommended to read each description carefully as you collect them as most describe a possible boon - but also a possible danger.

Between each chapter, you'll meet Eliza as the unseen entity - that is if you accepted her help at the beginning of the game. She will read out the associated descriptions of each tarot card You'll then need to select "See More" to view the aforementioned scene.

The tarot card will then play a few seconds of a possible forthcoming scene in the crystal ball on Eliza's table. Pay attention as the scene can help you make your decisions in the next chapter.

By the way, if you refuse Eliza's help, you'll at least pop the Hard Pass trophy and achievement . If you just want the trophy and want to play with the tarot card abilities, then refuse her help and start a new game.

What happens if I don't find any tarot cards in a chapter?

You'll still meet with Eliza, but you won't be able to see any possible future. She'll just give you some words about finding her cards and wish you luck.

What happens if I only find one tarot card at the end of a chapter card?

Eliza will automatically read out that card to you and go right into asking if you want to see more. Whether or not you want to view the scene is up to you.

What happens if I end a chapter having found multiple tarot cards?

Eliza will read out the associated descriptions of each tarot card, and her vocalizations may help determine which card to select as she puts certain emphasis on words and phrases. Then, you'll have to select only one card , meaning only one possible future. You cannot view more than one card's scene between chapters.

Again, read the descriptions as you find them in a chapter and rank them in your head. This should help with your decision between chapters.

SPOILER: The Hierophant tarot card

In the later chapters, you'll come across The Hierophant tarot card. This is a special card in the game which is signaled by its unusually personal description. Most of the tarot cards have a neutral tone to them, if not a bit dramatic, but The Hierophant's is much different. Read below for heavy spoilers .

Again, spoilers begin here . The Hierophant is the card dedicated to her son, Silas. Silas Vorez was a seemingly unwilling part of his mother's traveling show as "Silas the Wolf Boy," being locked in a cage literally every second of every day. In fact, Silas is a werewolf who infected the Hackett family and was being hunted over the past six years since he infected Caleb Hackett, Chris Hackett's ("Mr. H" and played by David Arquette) son. Silas was also described by Travis Hackett (played by Ted Raimi) as an albino child and white wolf, represented in the card's illustration. Silas is ultimately the main "villain" in the game, though it's unwilling and there are arguments for others, particularly depending on your choices.

If you nab The Hierophant, then between chapters, your decision is made for you. Eliza will exclaim about the card and you'll be transported to a scene six years ago - the fire that loomed so large in the story. You'll briefly control Eliza as she looks around and finds a charred body that ends up being the former sheriff. Finding that Silas is alive, she put werewolf blood on her face (to mask her scent) and went off to search only to die in an ensuing explosion.

Her ghost haunts the area as she is "The Hag of Hackett's Quarry." If you play with subtitles, hers are the ones colored white. Mostly, it's a lot of, "Silas!" and, "Kill them all!" Finding The Hierophant fills in a lot of storyline holes before you even hear it from other characters, and the scene with Eliza is gripping, so it's recommended to nab this card.

By the way, there are two trophies and achievements related to tarot cards. Forewarned is Forearmed will pop for receiving a tarot reading. Decked Out will pop for finding all 22 tarot cards.

Now you have everything you need to know about tarot cards. Remember to search everywhere and be ready for those camera changes to nab all of the tarot cards in The Quarry.

I love the bands that come to the quarry. I have seen some stellar bands. Ryan brings in some quality entertainment! So many I am fans of and would not have seen if I had not gone to the Quarry. The food is really good. I love the burgers and wings. And the pizza is so tasty. The drinks are so good. Corrine makes this blood orange old fashioned that had me in a state of utter bliss. It would be a shame to lose this place. It is truly a unique place to go. And the speakeasy is an awesome place to have a party.

We just hosted a retirement party for our co-worker and it was perfect! The catering set-up was awesome. Angela was so easy to work with and helpful. The space is fantastic, and the owners are wonderful. We love hanging out at The Quarry!

This place was a Great LET DOWN , Wasted my Time , Way Over Rated , The food was a little BELOW Average , The Music hired that Night was a REALLY BELOW average Local Band , They even forgot a whole Verse in a Song and Laughed about it , Wasn't funny to Me , SERVICE was Good and Kind , The so Called MADE UP FAKE Speakeasy Downstairs Basement , REALLY was just a Stinky Basement , There not Fooling me . I got out of there quick , there is a Ronchy Smell , A distinctly musty, damp smell is likely caused by mold and mildew growth due to excess moisture in the basement. You DO NOT want to stay down there and keep smelling that while your Drinking down there. Owner was Totally DRUNK , and people were calling him and yelling at him lol Brian or Ryan i think , which was funny . Ambiance was kinda shady with the Mixed Crowd , Thing were just to Weird , never seen a Bar Owner Drunk like That LOL , Who ever is hiring the MUSIC really needs to Go , Hire some Real Bands , I think this place needs BAR RESCUE , Not Happening

Our Bloody Marys were $10 ea no celery just olives, no black pepper or celery salt. Decent flavor but for the money should get full treatment. Chicken dumpling soup was very good and would do again. We both had Cajun pasta included chicken, shrimp and andui sausage. Was just a little bite of spicy heat and thickened sauce. Was a very satisfying meal. Highly recommend it. Service was a one man show he did okay for being alone. Bingo on Wednesday and open mic on Thursday.

How an Abandoned Virginia Quarry Transformed into a Dramatic Canvas for Native Plants

One visit to Quarry Gardens and you’ll know this reborn, peaceful place is no longer the pits

By Steve Russell

June 4, 2024

A quarry surrounded by green life

Photo: courtesy of the Quarry Gardens

A while back I wrote about the Blue Ridge Tunnel , and more recently, Natural Tunnel State Park . Here, I continue my inadvertent “Scenic Virginia Holes in the Ground” series with a stroll through Quarry Gardens in Schuyler, about thirty miles south of Charlottesville.

Bermuda shoreline

This site is protected by reCAPTCHA and the Google Privacy Policy and Terms of Service apply.

Schuyler is one of the few places on the planet—along with Brazil and Finland—where soapstone is found. Rich in talc and magnesium, soapstone is dense, resistant to acids, and easily carved. These qualities made it useful for laboratory countertops, film-developing tanks, and telephone switchboards, starting a soapstone rush in the 1890s that drilled and blasted ninety quarry pits into Schuyler’s ridge-lined landscape by the time the industry petered out in the 1970s.

visit the quarry

Six of those abandoned quarries lie within a large tract of land purchased as a retirement property by Armand and Bernice Thieblot in 1991. Inspired by British Columbia’s Butchart Gardens, itself a reclaimed limestone quarry, the Thieblots wanted to rehabilitate the forty-acre quarry site. As often befalls derelict quarries, by then they’d become a de facto dump site. “This piece of property was trashed,” says Rachel Floyd, director of operations for what is now Quarry Gardens. On the other hand, the pits—up to ninety feet deep—had filled halfway with groundwater, forming a pair of adjacent reflecting pools that hinted at what could be.

After dump trucks carted away tons of tires, rusted appliances, and assorted junk, Charlottesville’s Center for Urban Habitats undertook a meticulous survey of existing soil conditions and flora to implement a “restoration ecology” plan focused on native plants. “We’re not planting anything that hasn’t been documented to grow naturally with fifteen miles of here,” Floyd says.

visit the quarry

Yet verdant variety abounds, now accounting for more than 650 documented native species, more than you’ll find at any other botanical garden in the state. The magic of the place is how those plant colonies enhance the dramatic, vertical rise of quarry walls from placid pools. Taken together, it’s like stumbling upon a secret spot that’s just a bit more blessed than the already lush landscape of Central Virginia. This vibe is underscored by the fact that visits are by appointment only. Even an annual summer performance by Victory Hall Opera Company flies somewhat under the radar. (Apparently, quarry acoustics are impressive.)

visit the quarry

On a recent Saturday morning trail walk, Floyd easily identified Virginia raspberry, yellow passionflower, pink-petaled Carolina rose, fluffy goat’s beard, and spicebush leaves that emit a surprising, Lemon Pledge–like scent when scratched. She also casually pointed out a strip of lily-topped wetland where, after recently removing a smothering invasive, she emerged with several thumb-sized leeches attached to her waders. Less unsettling native fauna include salamanders, turtles, foxes, more than seventy bird species, and a newly observed otter.

visit the quarry

While Quarry Gardens maps out more than a dozen varying eco-zones, these “galleries” flow without the defined borders of a typical botanical garden. “Formality is not what we’re about,” Floyd says, adding that the entire site is maintained by one full-time groundskeeper and a small cadre of weekend volunteers. Keeping with that ethos, no showy annuals are planted. While spring pops with the colors of iris and larkspur and fall glows with goldenrod and asters, summer’s beauty is more represented by rustling swatches of ferns and croaking cricket frogs. Claim a hewn bench with a tree-framed view of dappled water, and not much else is required to fully decompress. One can arrive feeling as heavy as the sofa-sized, twenty-ton block of soapstone that anchors one lookout, and leave as light as the zigzagging dragonflies also drawn to this pocket of reclaimed paradise.
