Dog-Friendly Barcelona: Visiting Barcelona with a Dog

Barcelona is one of the most popular destinations in Spain , thanks to its beaches, vibrant culture and nightlife scene. It’s also a great destination to visit in Spain with a dog. Find out more about visiting dog-friendly Barcelona, from what to do to where to stay.

Dog-Friendly Baarcelona

Dog-Friendly Sightseeing in Barcelona

There’s plenty to see and do in Barcelona, including with your dog by your side.

#1 Visit Parc Güell

One of my favourite dog-friendly spots in Barcelona is Parc Güell. The work of the architect Antoni Gaudí, the park is situated on the hillside above the Gràcia district. Its home to colourful, whimsical mosaics, not to mention beautiful views of the city and coastline.

Leashed pets are allowed to join you inside the park, although the rules for pets have become more restrictive since my visit. Pets are no longer allowed in some of the most stunning spots, including the Nature Square, Hipostyle Room, the Dragon Stairway, the Austria Gardens and the Laundry Room Portico.

Visiting Park Guëll with a dog

No ticket is required for pets, but it’s recommended that you book your own tickets in advance. No ticket is required for the upper Forest Zone section of the park, but it’s the lower Monument Zone that is the highlight.

#2 Wonder at Other Gaudi Masterpieces

Parc Güell isn’t the only creation of Gaudí that you can view on your visit to Barcelona. Gaudí is also the architect of the imposing La Sagrada Família Church, which is still under construction but due to be completed soon (hopefully!)

Sagrada Família

Other works of Gaudí that you can see in the city include Casa Milà, Casa Battló, Palau Güell and Casa Vicens, each in the Eixample or Gràcia districts.

Each of these buildings is accessible to the public, with a paid ticket. Naturally, you can’t enter with your dog. However, it’s still possible to view the exteriors of the buildings.

In particular, I loved the exteriors of Casa Milà and Casa Battló. Although at the time of my visit Casa Vicens was covered in scaffolding for restoration, which has since been removed.

Casa Batlló

I’ve put together a self-guided cycling route to visit Gaudí’s works . If visiting with a dog, I recommend walking part of the route with your pup, or else you might be able to hire a pet trailer to use with your bike.

#3 Stroll Along La Rambla

The most well-known street in Barcelona is La Rambla. This pedestrianised street stretches for 1.2km, connecting  Plaça de Catalunya in the centre of the city with the Christopher Columbus Monument and the old port area.

While La Rambla is often considered a tourist trap, and is certainly often crowded, it’s still an interesting street to walk along with your dog, partially because cars are restricted. Along the way, keep an eye out for the Joan Miró mosiac and the facade of the Gran Teatre del Liceu, Barcelona’s opera house.

On the eastern side of La Rambla is the Gothic Quarter, the heart of the Old City of Barcelona, with its maze of narrow streets and small squares.

#4 Visit La Boqueria market

One place you should visit along La Rambla is the famous food market, La Boqueria . Dating back to 1836, this fresh food market claims on its website to be the “best market in the world!”

Inside La Boqueria

It’s a great spot to sample some of the local food products, with everything from butcher stalls to fruit and vegetables to groceries. We experienced no issues with taking Schnitzel instead – double check there are no new signs. Schnitzel even charmed a butcher into some free tidbits!

The markets are closed on Sundays, but are open from 8am to 8:30pm from Monday to Saturday.

#5 Head to the Beach

What’s a visit to Barcelona without a visit to the beach? And luckily, even if you visit Barcelona during the summer months, you can visit a beach with your dog.

The closest year round dog beach to the centre of Barcelona is Playa de Llevant (Spanish only). Dogs are allowed on a northern section of Platja de Llevant, near the Diagonal Mar shopping centre at the northern end of the Barcelona coast.

The excellent sandy beach is open from 10:30am to 7pm daily between June and September, with a capacity of 100 dogs, that need to be registered (although I’m not sure if this is enforced for visiting dogs). Make sure you also carry the vaccination card of your dog. A shower is provided.

Outside of the summer season, which lasts from the 1st June to the last Sunday in September, plus the weekends either side, dogs are allowed to join you on any beach in Barcelona.

For more information on other dog-friendly beaches in Spain, check out this map .

#6 Check out the Street Art

Barcelona is home to many excellent art museums. While your dog won’t be able to join you on a visit, you can instead appreciate the colourful street art scene on the city’s street.

While Valencia is better known for its street art, I also found that there was plenty of street art in Barcelona, particularly around the Gràcia neighbourhood. Take a wander and see what you discover, with roller shutters a popular canvas.

Dog-Friendly Parks in Barcelona

The rules are changing for dogs in Barcelona. Previously, there were no restrictions on dogs being off-leash. However, dogs are now restricted to being off-leash in designated parks, with the number being increased.

Off-leash dog parks in Barcelona can be divided into three categories:

  • Small off-leash enclosures known as “pipicans” for dogs to do their business
  • Larger off-leash parks
  • Shared parks, where dogs are are only allowed off-leash at designated hours

For more information and to view a map, check out this webpage . One particularly popular dog park is Parque Joan Miró, near Plaza de España.

Dogs on Public Transport in Barcelona

The rules for dogs on public transport in Barcelona are mixed, depending on the mode of transport and the size of your dog.

On the metro, small dogs in a carrier can ride at any time. Larger dogs though are only permitted outside of peak hour, from 7-9:30am and 5-7pm on weekdays, plus all day long on weekends and during the summer period, from late June to early September.

Larger dogs also need to be on a short leash and muzzled, with a maximum of one dog per person. Dogs are also meant to be registered, but I assume this isn’t enforced for visitors. No ticket is required for small or large dogs.

Dog on Barcelona Metro

On buses, only small pets including dogs in a carrier bag are permitted, with no larger dogs allowed except for assistance animals.

On trains in Spain, the rules for pets vary depending on the type of train. On Con Cercanías (commuter) trains, pets of all sizes are permitted, with larger dogs not in a carrier needing to be muzzled and leashed. No pet ticket is required.

On other trains, including AVE, AVE International, Large Distancia, Avant and Media Distance trains, larger dogs are not permitted, except for on selected AVE trains, including some services between Barcelona and Madrid.

Generally only smaller dogs up to 10kg in a carrier are permitted, and pet tickets are required. The rules are long and detailed – I recommend reading the full details by following the link.

Dog-Friendly Dining in Barcelona

When dining out with a dog in Spain, generally dogs are not allowed inside restaurants. So during my travels, we were generally restricted to dining on the outdoor terrace, which wasn’t a problem on warmer days.

However, Barcelona tends to be more pet-friendly. I’ve heard reports from someone who spent a long time in Barcelona that many local restaurants allow dogs inside. It’s certainly worthwhile asking. Otherwise find somewhere with a terrace.

Dog-Friendly Accommodation in Barcelona

Make sure you book your dog-friendly accommodation in Barcelona well in advance. When I stayed in the city, I discovered there’s not many cheaper options available in the city, plus Airbnbs were long ago virtually banned.

An excellent dog-friendly spot to stay in the centre of the city is the Petit Palace Boqueria Garden . It’s located just metres from La Rambla and La Boqueria Market, plus a metro station. Set in an historic building, the hotel has its own bar set in a private courtyard and garden, perfect for relaxing with your pup. Best of all, pets stay for free if you book directly, otherwise a €25 charge per stay applies.

For a splurge, check out the Catalonia Barcelona Plaza . Sleek and modern, this hotel with a rooftop-pool and terrace is highly rated. It’s located outside the touristic centre of Barcelona, but there’s a metro close by and it’s just metres from the dog-friendly Joan Miró Park.

One pet is allowed per room, up to 20kg (44lb), with an additional charge of €25 per night. You should request their stay in advance (take advantage of the free cancellation period to message the hotel and confirm). A €200 deposit is also required at check-in, which will be fully refunded upon inspection of the room at check- out.

Another park you can enjoy with your dog is the famous  Park Güell .  You can easily enter   even to its monumental part (don’t forget to book your tickets in advance!). Moreover, dogs are also very welcome in public parks such as  Parque Joan Miró,  Parque de la Estació del Nord  or  Parque de la Espanya Industrial.

Barcelona is known for its beautiful beaches , which you will definitely want to visit. Unfortunately,  during the high season for bathing, on Barcelona’s beaches, there are some restrictions . It’s prohibited to go to the beach with your pet during the weekends from April to October and on any day from the 1st of July to the last Sunday of September. However,  Llevant beach  has a special area marked out for dogs and it’s opened from 1st of June to 25th of September (2017).  There are also some pet beaches around Barcelona: Cala Vallcarca near Sitges or Playa de la Picordia in Arenys de Mar. If you want something extra for your puppy you can visit Canino Can Jane Resort with a special swimming pool for dogs , just 30 minutes from Barcelona.

In the city, you will also find dog-friendly attractions like  Chronologic Escape Room.  You can also take a ride on  Funky Rickshaw City Tour ,  which will happily take your pet on a board with you! During your stay in Barcelona be up-to-date with some outdoor events such as  Palo Alto Market  – a weekend festival with live music, food trucks, and design, organized on the first weekend of every month. Of course, it’s 100% dog-friendly!

You can easily use  public transport to move around Barcelona with your dog . However, you have to follow some restrictions. In Barcelona’s metro and bus, networks travel with one dog per person is allowed. All dogs on the metro and bus areas must  WEAR A MUZZLE . They also must be kept on a non-extending lead and remain within 50 cm of the handler. On weekdays from 11 September to 24 June , pets are not allowed on the metro between 7.00 and 9.30 am, and between 5.00 and 7.00 pm. On weekends and on public holidays, dogs are allowed at any time as well as during the summer (from 24 June to 11 September).

You can also  travel with your dog by taxi , but always make sure that the transfer company you choose is pet-friendly and if it takes any additional fees for the pet.

  • Although all the places we mentioned are dog-friendly, bear in mind that during the  high season or rush hours places can be crowded , which might not be suitable for your pet.
  • Always have a bottle of water for your pet. You can easily refill it at one of the  drinking fountains in the city .

Where to Eat

In Barcelona, you don’t have to struggle a lot with the choice of restaurants and bars which accept dogs. A dog is more than welcome in many restaurants in Barcelona. You can enjoy your meal or a cold beer with your pet next to you. Here you have some options:

Espai Mescladís

Espai Mescladís

This colorful cafe-bar is located on a small patio in heart of el Born district. It is a good choice for breakfast or lunch. Not just a place with delicious food, but also a non-profit organization. They give work opportunities to immigrants and organize multicultural workshops. You can sit on its beautiful terrace and enjoy sunny mornings with your pet.

For a delicious brunch, you should head to Can Dendê. It’s a charming local restaurant with friendly staff. You can have typical brunch options such as French toast or eggs Benedict. In addition, some dishes have a Brazilian touch. Ah, and don’t forget that little Dendê the dog is the boss there!

Fàbrica Moritz Barcelona

It’s a Barcelonian Moritz brewery restaurant. Typical Spanish tapas and a beer from the large selection of their home-brews are the best things to order. We love it thanks to its delicious food and unique, spacious venue. You can spend a delightful time till late night hours inside or on their cozy terrace.

Where to stay

There are plenty of apartments in Barcelona that accept dogs. Some may charge an additional fee per dog but this ensures that there will be no problems if your pup misbehaves!

The truth is that – in Barcelona – people with dogs are treated as secondary citizens, our furry friends are not allowed in most parks and the spaces dedicated to them are very few, small and dirty. As of today there’s roughly 150.000 dogs in Barcelona which amounts to 10% of the population, yet the city council keeps reducing designated areas.

Barcelona with dogs

Barcelona is a dog-friendly city where it is estimated that there are 170,500 dogs . In this post I present my partner Gazza , a mix of Husky and Podenco , adopted now 7 years ago . Here I am going to explain a lot of activities that you can do with your pet in our city.

This park is one of the essential visits during your stay in Barcelona.

Although dogs can access the entire park, there are areas that are restricted such as the Nature’s Plaza , the Hypostyle Hall , the Dragon Staircase , the Austrian Gardens and the Laundry Portal .

The second photo is taken from the Plaza de la Naturaleza (Nature’s Plaza) and, although now it is not possible to access it with a dog, it can be seen from a higher location in the park.

Montjuïc is a mountain that has many emblematic spaces in the city, having hosted a large part of the 1992 Olympics . Historically, it has been a strategic place for the defense of the city and that is why there is a castle on its top.

I recommend you climb the mountain part to the castle. Unfortunately, Pets are no admitted, nor can you go up with your pet on the cable car. Other spaces where your dog can access are the Poble Espanyol and the Olympic Ring . You cannot miss the views of the city from the balcony of the National Art Museum of Catalonia .

Find out how to get there and all the details about Montjuic in this blog post .

Casa Batlló

It is a modernist-style house located on Passeig de Gracia between Aragón and Consell de Cent streets, in the Manzana known as Manzana de la Discordia due to the rivalry between its architects and the owners who commissioned them. Casa Batlló was remodeled by Gaudí on an old building by order of Don Josep Batlló i Casanovas , a textile industrialist who owned several factories in Barcelona and a prominent businessman.

It is allowed to visit the house with your pet, always under your supervision and with the approval of Casa Batlló staff.

  • Ticket Sales
  • Sagrada Familia

This is the most visited monument in Barcelona and although pets are not allowed to enter the Basilica , I recommend that you go and see it from the outside. Here you will find information about its facades .

Right in front, whether you access through Marina Street or Sardenya Street , there are two parks where you can walk with your dog.

Suggested itineraries around the center of Barcelona

If you want to get to know the city on foot, being accompanied by your inseparable friend will not be a problem. In my 2-day route I suggest the modified first day itinerary . The route starts at Passeig de Gracia in La Pedrera , Casa Batlló (which, as I have already explained, can be visited with a dog), Casa Amatller , Plaza Catalunya , La Rambla , Font de Canaletas , MACBA , Teatro del Liceo , the Columbus Statue , the Maremagnum , the Ciutadella Park , the Arc de Triomf and, finally, the Barcelona Cathedral . As you can see, I have excluded the Boqueria Market , the Museu d’Història de Catalunya , the Palau de la Música and the Museu Picasso from the tour, because they do not allow pets.

Itinerario 2 dias Barcelona

Another itinerary that I suggest to get to know the city is the one t hat you can consult in the post of the 7-day route . On the first day of this route you will see the Barcelona Cathedral , Plaça Felip Neri , Plaça del Rei , Plaça Sant Jaume , Plaça Reial and you will end up on La Rambla .

Itinerario 7 dias

Bunkers del Carmel

The Bunkers del Carmel are a viewpoint where you can see some of the best views of the city. It is a free access space located in an area made up of anti-aircraft batteries built by the Republicans during the Spanish Civil War. Learn more about them in this post .

In this area your dog will have to be on a leash, but if you go up through the Parque del Guinardó you can do most of the journey with the dog unleashed.

IMG 20200809 092923 1 1 1

Parks and gardens

It is important to know the ordinance and how the dogs should go according to the space where you walk. In Barcelona there are many urban parks in which the ordinance determines that dogs have to be tied (except in recreation areas for dogs). There are other spaces where they can be unleashed (except for breeds considered potentially dangerous): areas for dogs , recreation areas for dogs and shared use areas , which establish certain time slots (although they are currently in moratorium and therefore can be loose).

All areas are well signposted. Here you will find the regulations in a more extensive way .

WhatsApp Image 2022 08 28 at 10.34.32 PM 2 1

Apart from the parks that I have already told you about ( Parc Güell , Montjuic and the Bunkers ), there are other large parks in the city where your dogs will enjoy running.

Likewise, there are 80 parks and gardens in which dogs are not allowed to enter due to their historical or artistic nature or for the protection of plant and heritage elements.

Parc del Guinardó

In this park are the Bunkers del Carmel at its top. It is a small mountain that offers various itineraries from where you can contemplate beautiful views of the city. Here your dog will be able to socialize with many other dogs freely.

WhatsApp Image 2022 08 28 at 11.04.07 AM 1 1

Parc de la Ciutadella

The Parque de la Ciutadella is a public park that was built at the end of the 19th century . It is a space where you will find families spending the day, people having picnics, groups practicing sports such as yoga or tai chi, and it is also used for cultural activities. As it is an urban park, you will have to keep your dog on a leash. Even so, you will see that in the grassy areas there are many people having picnics with their dogs running around them.

Pets are allowed on the beaches of the city of Barcelona , without time limits, except during the bathing season (weekends from April to October, Easter and every day from June 1 to the last Sunday of September).

In summer it is difficult to find spaces to refresh our dogs. In Barcelona, a small space has been reserved on the Llevant beach for our pets, although I hardly recommend it because it is really small.

Playa perros Barcelona

Perros al Agua

Another option to refresh our companions is at the Aquaparc Perros al Agua , located in La Roca del Valles , on the outskirts of Barcelona. Access must be done by car (30 minutes) because it is poorly connected by public transport. It is an impressive water park for dogs that has two huge pools in which they can swim freely.

gazzi 1 1

Barcelona offers multiple options to do your shopping: from centuries-old shops to avant-garde design spaces. Pets are allowed in most of their stores.

Public transport

Dogs can travel by metro and tram every working day, except from 7:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. and from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. On Saturdays and holidays there is no time limit. The regulations require that they go with a muzzle and with a non-extensible leash and less than 50cm long.

In order to access the metro stations, we recommend that you use the door reserved for animals, prams and wheelchairs, which allows better access.

Here you can consult all the access regulations of the city council.

Where to eat

To eat you can sit on any terrace, bearing in mind that in Barcelona the climate is mild in the winter months and hot in the summer. If you ask, most establishments give you water so that your dog can cool off.

In addition, you can find many restaurants and bars that accept dogs inside. We usually search through the SrPerro app.

With booking you can book your stay in the city intuitively by filtering in the “Facilities” section, by “pets allowed”. In addition, you will have flexibility and the possibility of free cancellation, sometimes up to 24 hours before. And if you register you can access discounts of at least 10% with the Genius program.

Recommendations

  • In Barcelona it is usually hot, do not forget to bring a bottle with water for your dog, that you can refill at the city’s fountains.
  • It is not mandatory but it is advisable to pour water in the areas where the dog has peed to avoid bad odours.
  • It is mandatory to collect the droppings and not doing so is fined.
  • Here you can consult the requirements to travel with a dog to Spain, both from an EU country and from a non-EU country.

I hope that with these recommendations your pet also enjoys his visit to Barcelona

We all like travelling with our furry friends. Discovering new places, living unforgettable moments, spending more time together... But all too often, because of the place we’re travelling to, or simply because we aren’t aware of the options available, our dogs end up staying at home.  Spain is a perfect destination for travelling with your dog. The pet-friendly trend is constantly growing, which means that dogs travelling with their families are welcome, making for a great experience for all concerned.

Barcelona is a popular tourist destination in Spain and is known for being a dog-friendly city. Many of the city's parks and beaches allow dogs, and there are also many dog-friendly hotels, restaurants, and other establishments in the city. However, as with any destination, it is always a good idea to check with the specific location you will be visiting to ensure that they allow dogs before you travel with your dog. It is also a good idea to be aware of any local laws or regulations regarding dogs, and to make sure that your dog is up to date on all necessary vaccinations.

Some of the city's most popular dog-friendly parks and beaches include the Parc de la Ciutadella, Barceloneta Beach, and Mar Bella Beach. Dogs are also allowed on public transportation in Barcelona, although they must be on a leash and wear a muzzle.

It is always a good idea to check with the specific location you will be visiting to ensure that they allow dogs before you travel with your dog. #5 Best Things To Do When Visiting Barcelona With Dogs

Barcelona in Spain is a very dog-friendly city to do things with your dog. Here are some ideas for things you and your dog can do in Barcelona:

#1 Visit a Dog-Friendly Park in Barcelona

There are many dog-friendly parks in Barcelona where you can take your dog for a walk or play. Some of the best dog-friendly parks in the city include:

Parc de la Ciutadella: Parc de la Ciutadella is Barcelona's largest park and very popular among the city's residents. Dating back to 1888, Parc de la Ciutadella houses a monumental waterfall, a pond and a romantic English-style garden surrounded by two tree-lined boulevards. The grounds are also home to several museums and the Barcelona Zoo (zoo);

Jardins de Joan Brossa : What was the Montjuïc Amusement Park for over 30 years are now a large green space covered with luxuriant and typically Mediterranean vegetation. The Jardins de Joan Brossa invite you to take a stroll, rest a while or play. It is well worth spending a day of leisure there, surrounded by a natural and leafy landscape, offering sunny as well as shaded areas and magnificent views of Barcelona;

Jardins del Mirador: Close to Montjuïc Castle, these gardens are noted for the exceptional view they offer of Barcelona. They are also noteworthy for the mosaic paving that covers most of the area and for the peaceful, bright and sunny ambience;

Parc Güell: Two sights not to be missed on your Barcelona city break are Park Güell and the Sagrada Familia. Park Guell is the city park designed by Antoni Gaudi and world-famous for, among other things, the statue of the dragon (salamander) and the many mosaic tiles and benches. From these benches you have one of the most beautiful views of Barcelona;

Parc de Collserola: To the northwest of Barcelona lies the Serra de Collserola mountain range, an exceptionally beautiful natural area just 20 minutes from the city. Barcelonans enjoy nature, tranquillity and the many activities available in the Collserola hills: from hiking or running to cycling and picnicking. For the city, this is a very important source of fresh air and natural beauty. You come here, for example, to enjoy the beautiful viewpoints over the city and its surroundings, to find peace and quiet and get in touch with nature;

Parc de la Creueta del Coll: This park is located in the Gracia neighborhood and features a number of green spaces and a playground for dogs.

Keep in mind that it is always a good idea to check with the specific location you will be visiting to ensure that they allow dogs before you travel with your dog. It is also a good idea to be aware of any local laws or regulations regarding dogs, and to make sure that your dog is up to date on all necessary vaccinations.

#2 Go To The Dog-Friendly Beaches of Barcelona

Barcelona is home to a number of dog-friendly beaches where you can take your dog for a swim or walk. Some of the best dog-friendly beaches in the city include:

Llevent Beach – Barcelona : Llevant Beach is a recently constructed beach located in Barcelona, Spain. It was completed in 2006 and is approximately 375 meters long. During the summer season, there is an area designated for dog owners and their pets. Llevant Beach was created by the demolition of the "Escullera de Prim" breakwater and the construction of a platform that was originally intended to host a marine zoo. The beach features a volleyball court, parking areas that are easily accessible to those with mobility limitations, visual and tactile signage and information, adapted toilets, wooden walkways that lead to the water (although they do not touch it due to the potential for currents to detach the modules), and adapted showers with chairs. Public transportation has also been adapted to provide easier access to the beach;

Poblenou Beach in Pineda de Mar: Poblenou beach is located in Pineda de Mar, south of Pineda and bordering Calella. It is a quiet and family-friendly beach with wide, sandy areas where you can relax or participate in sports activities surrounded by nature and landscaped areas. The beach also offers convenient access through underground passages equipped with stairs and ramps, making it ideal for those with reduced mobility. Poblenou beach has a designated area for families to swim with their dogs year-round, 24 hours a day, providing an opportunity to bring your dog along on your beach visit;

Playa Les Salines in Cubelles: Playa de Les Salines in Cubelles, Barcelona. The beach is 450 meters of fine sand located next to the tower of the thermal power station. You and your dog can access the area all hours of the day and play in the sand together. Clean up any mess that your pooch leaves behind to preserve the cleanliness of the sand and the water.

#4 Explore Gràcia in Barcelona

Gràcia is Barcelona's first major residential district and it was its own municipality for centuries, until it was subjected to Barcelona's expansion plans from the neighbouring Eixample district in 1897. Nevertheless, despite being officially part of Barcelona, Gràcia still has its own image and feel. Today, it is mainly a neighbourhood full of locals, independent shops and an awful lot of restaurants and bars. It is considered by many to be a relatively unknown gem, as many tourists stick to the most famous tourist centres, such as Las Ramblas, Passeig de Gràcia and the beaches of Barceloneta.

Be Aware of the Local Regulations and Laws

  • Pets must be micro-chipped or tattooed . These two forms of identification are necessary if you wish to travel around Barcelona with your four-legged friend. The microchip must be an ISO (11784 or 11785) that is 15 digits long and non-encrypted. If the chip is not compliant with this ISO you can bring your own microchip scanner. As for the tattoo identification, the requests are for the tattoo to be clearly visible, your pet’s current rabies vaccination was administered after the tattoo was applied and the tattoo to be prior to July 3, 2011.
  • Blood Titer Test . This is a mandatory step if you bring your pet from a high-rabies country. If this is the case you will have to take your pet to the vet, where your pet will have to be micro-chipped and then vaccinated. After 30 days has passed, a blood titer test must be administered. It is important that these phases occur in that order. If your pet successfully passed all of these phases and in addition 3 months passed, you will be able to bring your pet into Spain. You can check the full list of counties that are considered High-Rabies country .
  • More than 5 pets? Here is what you got to know . Travelling with more than 5 pets is allowed under certain circumstances. Firstly the pets must be older than 6 months. Secondly in case you are travelling from an EU country, you will need an Intra-Trade Certificate and to register the movement on the traces system. If on the other hand you are entering Spain from a non-EU Rabies-free country, you will need to give 24-hours notice to an approved Border Inspection Post before your arrival
  • Puppies and kittens . If you own a puppy or a kitten, you will have to get them vaccinated against rabies before entering Spain. Yet these vaccinations are not allowed to be administered if your pet is younger than 12 weeks, in addition there is a 21 day wait for puppies and kittens arriving from EU member states or Rabies-Controlled Countries . If you bring your pet from a high-rabies country, it must be older than 7 months.
  • Special Breeds . There are some special breeds that require a 3 months registration prior the entry, these breeds are: Pit Bull Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Rottweiler, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasiliero, Tosa Inu and Akita Inu.

Barkelona: The City’s Best Dog Parks

Featured Story · Local Living · Travel

Dogs are generally welcomed in Barcelona and are well tolerated in most public spaces. They are just as much a part of café life here as cañas and bravas. The city has required leash laws and taking your canine friend on public transportation requires a carrier or muzzle, depending on the type of transport. With 111 official dog areas (pipicans), the city has tried to address the most pressing needs of its canine citizens. Yet, there’s nothing like a nice walk in a green park or romp with dog friends on a grassy hill. Here are a few Barcelona dog parks for your next paseo.

Parc de les Aigües

Bookish dogs that love history should head straight to this park. Located at the bottom end of the Hort/Guinardo neighborhood, Parc de les Aigües is a bit off the beaten [tourist] path and offers up lots for dogs and their people. The terraced park has fountains, a children’s playground, picnic and table tennis tables, and even a library. At the top edge of the park, near the library, are a series of 22 concrete slabs and a buried submarine sculpture. They are a memorial to the people killed by the atomic bomb in Hiroshima and you can find other dogs and their owners nearby. Parc de les Aigües is easily accessible via the L4 Metro line and the H6, V19, and 114 public buses. It’s open from 10am to sundown and entry is free.

Parc de Joan Miró

Dogs that love art need to take their paseo in the park with Joan Miró’s famous Dona i Ocell (Woman and Bird) sculpture. The park sits in the shadow of Arenas mall, a former bullfighting ring converted to a shopping mall. Parc de Joan Miro has two sections: the area immediately surrounding the sculpture includes a long, grassy expanse where people frequently picnic; the other section is below and includes trees, four playgrounds for children, and snack bars. Also nearby is the Parc de l’Espanya Industrial , which also has plenty of green space for canine and human friends. Access Parc de Joan Miró via the L1 and L3 Metro lines and any number of public buses. The grassy area is open access and the remainder of the park is open 10am to sundown. Free entry.

Parc de l’Espanya Industrial

The laid back pooch who gets on with everyone will love Parc de l’Espanya Industrial. This large public park is located next to Sants Estacio and has everything from a lake, sculptures, and basketball court, to a children’s playground with a metal dragon slide. The lake is clearly visible from the cab stand side of the train station. There are both open green spaces as well as walking paths. Parc de l’Espanya Industrial is popular with teens and houses a community center. It’s open late, although the lighting could be better. Combining a trip through this park and nearby Parc de Joan Miro is a perfect weekend “long walk” for your dog friend. Parc de l’Espanya Industrial is accessible via the L1, L3, and L5 Metro lines, plus any other train that comes into Sants Estacio. The park is open 10am to sundown. Free entry.

Parc de l’Estació del Nord

The social dog who loves meeting everyone will feel right at home at Parc de l’Estació del Nord . The Fort Pienc park sits in the shadow of the Arc de Triomf, right next to Estació del Nord bus station (which is worth a peek and photo of the iron facade). Ceramic art and nature come together in this sprawling and sunny greenspace and there are plenty of paths to wander through it all with your canine friend. Sculpturist Beverly Pepper’s works Cel Caigut , a large tiled pyramid, and Espiral Arbrada , among other pieces, may be found throughout the park. Closest access via public transportation is the Arc de Triomf train station or the Metro L1 line Marina stop. Free entry and open 10:00am-10:30pm.

Parc de Carles I

Ciutadella gets the attention (and tourists), but right next door is the unassuming little Parc de Carles I . Perfect for dogs that unapologetically sniff butts, the park includes the El Cul bronze sculpture by Eduardo Úrculo, plus a canal lined with cypress and banana trees. While not as large as some of the other parks in Barcelona, Carles I offers a nice little alternative to sprawling Ciutadella, especially for slower paced dogs that prefer a good sniff over a run. Public transportation access via Metro Line L4 or Tramvia T4 Vila Olímpica-Ciutadella stop. Open 24 hours, free entry.

Parc del Turó del Putxet

For dogs with unlimited energy (and owners seeking a good workout), head to Parc del Turó del Putxet . The park favors winding, tree-lined pathways to wide open lawns. The relentless uphill climb will have you and your dog wanting to take water breaks and check out the spectacular views of the city below. Tourists can have Parc Güell. Turó del Putxet has all the same great views without the crowds and lots of locals to meet with your pup. If you make it to the top, you’ll be rewarded with a nice, flat area to rest for a bit and chat up other dog owners. As with many other Barcelona dog parks, this one also has a small children’s play area. Open 8am-9pm, free entry.

Jardines de Piscinas y Deportes

Over near Sarria, in one of the most residential areas of Barcelona, sits shady and sedate Jardines de Piscinas y Deportes . More simply known as DiR Parc for its location next to one of the largest DiR gyms, the park draws plenty of locals throughout the day, especially since nearby Turó Parc decided to prohibit dogs. With both a large, sandy dedicated dog area, plus open grassy fields and a walking path that snakes through, DiR parc has something for both the rambunctious, playful dog and the quiet, little sniffer. There are regular dog groups of locals who meet up every morning and evening. The closest public transportation (aside from buses) are the L’Illa tramvia stop and La Bonanova FGC station. The park is open 10am to sundown. Free entry.

For dogs that are a little extra, take them to the most extra place in Barcelona — La Sagrada Familia. Although entrance to La Sagrada Familia is limited to assistance dogs, there are two spectacular parks bookending the oversized Gaudí architectural masterpiece. Plaza de Gaudí is a small park with a large pond and front row vistas of the looming Sagrada Familia. The tranquil park is best for a quiet weekend stroll with a chill canine sidekick. On the other side of La Sagrada Familia is the Plaza de la Sagrada Familia . No water features here, but the park offers plenty of canine play friends, grand views of La Sagrada Familia, and is especially popular on weekend mornings and afternoons.

Both of these Barcelona dog parks are accessible via the Sagrada Familia stop for the L2 and L5 Metro lines. Plaza de Gaudí is open 24 hours. Plaza de la Sagrada Familia is open 9:00am-6:00pm. Free entry.

Parc del Poblenou

The rough-and-tumble dog who loves an unfettered run will love Parc del Poblenou . It’s an easy walk from nearby Bogatell Beach. This park is mostly is a wide swath of green lawn, with a small children’s play area in the middle. Bring a picnic lunch or pre-dinner snacks and a blanket. Most Barcelona dog parks draws lots of families and this one is no exception. Note though that, while leash laws are in effect, it’s common to find dogs running and playing off leash here. Accessible via the Bogatell Beach, Ciutadella Vila Olímpica, or Llacuna stops on Metro L4. Open 24 hours. Free entry.

Love to run and want a dog-friendly route? This one takes you past the beach and a couple of parks for some canine play time.

With the dog to Barcelona

Entering spain with the dog and staying in barcelona.

In principle, entry with a dog is possible

Entry with the dog is possible

Entry with dogs and other pets is generally possible. For travel within the EU and thus also for entry into Spain, the animal always needs a valid pet passport and a valid rabies vaccination.

Dog-friendly city tours

There are several dog-friendly city tours that are offered as private tours. The tour guide is there exclusively for you.

France (for transit by car) and Spain require a rabies vaccination certificate that is less than one year old and issued at least 30 days before entry. An EU pet passport and a health certificate from the veterinarian are also required.

For certain dog breeds there is a general muzzle requirement.

As of July 3, 2011, an EU directive came into force, according to which dogs, cats and ferrets must have an implanted microchip. A tattoo alone is therefore no longer enough.

Please also note that you should have your dog vaccinated at an early stage so that the vaccinations can become valid. Your vet will be happy to advise you. Please also seek advice on what are known as Mediterranean diseases, such as leishmaniasis, which is transmitted by sand flies, among other things. There is now a vaccination against leishmaniasis.

Dogs in public transport

Most of the pets brought are dogs. Since they are the only pets that move around Barcelona with their owner, we will limit ourselves to dogs below.

Dogs in the subway

Dogs are allowed on the Metro, but with restrictions:

  • Only one dog per person is allowed
  • The dog must have a registered chip for identification
  • A muzzle and a short leash are mandatory
  • Dogs are not allowed on the metro during peak times. This concerns the period between 11 September and 24 June from Mon-Fri from 07.00-09.30 and 17.00-19.00.
  • Outside of these times and on weekends, you can take your dog with you on the metro

Dogs on the bus

Stricter restrictions apply on buses. It is allowed:

  • Companion and assistance dogs for the blind, disabled and security personnel
  • Small dogs in a transport case

The dogs must wear a muzzle and you as the owner of your animal must have "a device against dirt" (bags and cleaning equipment) with you to remove dirt.

Dogs on long-distance trains

In Spain, only small dogs are allowed on long-distance trains. Unfortunately, large dogs are not allowed. If you want to travel to Barcelona by train via France, an alternative would be to take regional trains from the border to Barcelona. Or you can book a ride, for example via "Blabla Car".

Dogs on the ferry

Each ferry company decides for itself whether and how you can take a dog on the ferry. Some require that the dog must be housed in a kennel on deck. For some, the dog has to be left in the car. If they wear a muzzle, they may also be taken for a walk on deck. Not all ferries take dogs. If a shipping company allows you to take a dog or cat with you, you can book this directly.

Staying with dogs in Barcelona

Dogs in tourist attractions.

Dogs are not allowed in attractions. But there are exceptions:

  • You can take small dogs that fit in a bag with you to visit the Camp Nou stadium
  • Dogs are allowed at Casa Batlló provided they are under the control of their owners and approved by Casa Batlló staff

Dogs on the beach

During the bathing season there are restrictions on staying with dogs on the beach. From April 1st to June 30th, dogs are not allowed on the beach on weekends. From July 1st to the last Sunday in September, dogs are not allowed on the beach at all. With one exception: on the Llevat beach, which is the last stretch of beach before the Parque del Forum in the north-eastern part of the beach, there is a dog section. This is open from June 1st to the last Sunday in September.

Dogs in restaurants

In many bars and restaurants you can take your dog with you without any problems, in some only small dogs. It is best to ask before you go in or when making your reservation.

Bars and restaurants can of course sometimes be quite full. That's no fun for the dog. If you are spontaneously looking for a restaurant, you can see how full it is at the moment. If you reserve a seat in a restaurant, you can ask when the quietest time is.

With the dog in the hotel

On Barcelona.de you can also book hotels where you can bring your pet. To do this, select "Show additional options" and then tick "Pets allowed".

Tips for staying with a dog in Barcelona

In Barcelona you will find countless fenced-off dog walks where you can let your legged companion run free. Otherwise you have to keep the dog on a short leash in the city.

You can take a break with your dog in many parks. Give your companion enough rest. Water is available from the many fountains and can also be bottled.

A matter of course: always collect your protégé's piles. Please also make sure that your dog does not mark on houses or cars.

Sometimes delivery services ride their bikes on the sidewalk. This is forbidden and more than annoying, but please make sure that your dog stays with you. In the dark you should make your dog visible, for example with a light collar, a safety vest and a light leash.

Pets

Bringing your pet

If you wish to bring your pet, you will have to carry out the formalities in your country of origin. Your pet must basically be vaccinated and have the necessary health certificates.

Once you're in Barcelona, you will have to register your pet with the Barcelona Register for Pet Animals and Wild Animals in Captivity.

To do so you will have to produce a health certificate in advance, provided by a vet, and identify your pet electronically through an authorised microchip. Should you have a potentially dangerous dog, you will also need a licence.

Buying or adopting a pet

If you wish to have a pet, you can buy one from a specialist shop or a veterinary centre, although another option is to adopt one. This is a responsible act that may be gratifying, offering affection and a suitable home to abandoned animals.

Cats, dogs and ferrets can be adopted from the Barcelona Pet Shelter (CAACB, which stands for Centre d'Acollida d'Animals de Companyia de Barcelona ). You can find all the information on pets on the following web page .

Looking after your pet

If you plan to come to Barcelona and you can’t live without your pet, please note that there are numerous places that are pet friendly (especially for dogs) in the city.

Such is the case with bars, restaurants and other public and private places. There are also parks with recreational spaces reserved for dogs, and even one urban beach where you are allowed to take them with you: Llevant beach. You must be responsible for your pet in all other public spaces and will have to keep them on a leash and collect their droppings.

It is against the law to abandon pets in Barcelona, and it is considered a very serious offence if it puts the life of an animal or person at risk.

It is important to know that there are regulations on animal access to the metro and buses. To see these regulations, go to the Barcelona Metropolitan Transport (TMB) website .

All you need to know about living with a dog in Barcelona

Barcelona is a beautiful Spanish city known for being a major cultural and economic hub in Europe. The city is home to beautiful medieval architecture, world heritage sights, and numerous parks and beaches. Barcelona is a great city to live with your pet dog; you will find people with their dogs all over the city at all times. Barcelona is incredibly pet-friendly, and you can bring your pup along when you go shopping, or to a restaurant or café, to the beach and on the public transit system.

Pet dogs travelling to Barcelona must fulfil all pet import regulations satisfactorily to enter the country. If you plan to travel to Barcelona with your pet, here’s what you need to know about living in the Spanish city with a dog.

Pet owner responsibilities

As a pet owner in Barcelona, you have several responsibilities towards your dog. A pet parent must ensure their dog is well-cared for and lives in a clean and hygienic environment. Their physical and emotional needs must be met, and they must receive medical attention whenever required.

  • Register your dog – One of the first things to do is register your dog at the Barcelona Register for Pet Animals and Wild Animals in Captivity. You will need your pet’s microchip details and a health certificate from your vet to register your dog. If your dog belongs to a potentially dangerous breed , you will also need a separate pet licence for your dog.
  • Pick up after your dog – When you walk around Barcelona, you cannot fail to notice the sheer number of pet dogs being walked in the city. When you walk your doggie in Barcelona, make sure you pick up after your pet. There is a fine of 1500 Euros on pet owners who do not pick up after their pets. Fines and punishments aside, it is just good hygiene and good manners to clean up your pet.
  • Be respectful – As a pet parent in Barcelona, you must be respectful of your neighbours. Make sure your dog does not bark all day or night and disturb the peace. You are also obliged to ensure your pet dog doesn’t cause any harm to people or other animals and damage to property.
  • Microchip and vaccinate – Remember to vaccinate your pet dog regularly to keep them healthy and disease-free. A microchip is a tiny transponder that is implanted between the dog’s shoulder blades. It is invaluable in tracing lost and stolen dogs and for verifying the identity of the dog.

Public transport with dogs in Barcelona

You can take your dog on the metro in Barcelona outside peak hours. If your pet is a small breed, you can take them on the metro at any time as long as they are in a carrier. Large breeds need to be on a lead and muzzled. Dogs are not allowed on the bus in Barcelona unless they are a small breed and travel in a dog carrier. Dogs are also allowed on the tram and short-distance trains.

The best places to travel with a dog in Spain: doggy destinations

Vacaciones con perro

Spain is an ideal destination to take your dog on holiday . More and more Spanish cities are “pet-friendly”, whether they’re on the coast or inland, they all have fun locations for pets.

Below, we take a look at the cities where pets are welcome and the places you can’t miss out on . Furthermore, we recommend several World Experience tours that you can do in the company of your dog, as long as you let us know that it’s coming with you.

Travelling with a dog in Barcelona

Barcelona is one of the most “dog-friendly” cities in Spain. It has many animal-friendly hotels and restaurants, as well as 100 areas where you can walk your dog and meet other dog-lovers .

If you go to Barcelona you can’t miss the dog-friendly Playa de Llevant beach , where your dog can enjoy the sand and the sea of the Mediterranean coast. It’s much cleaner than other beaches in Barcelona.

Llevant beach Barcelona

Montserrat is HIGHLY recommended for escaping from the city with your dog, whilst still being close to Barcelona. We offer a tour which combines a visit to the abbey with a hiking trail . Dogs can travel for free in the cable car and once they’re up there they can run wild in the natural park.

Holidays with your dog in the Costa Brava

The Costa Brava, situated a few kilometres from Barcelona, is another destination worth a visit if you’re on holiday in Barcelona. On our private tour of the Costa Brava you’ll be able to visit towns with a unique charm such as Cadaqués or Port Lligat , as well as going up to the monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes , with unbelievable views of the coastline.

Travelling with your dog to Madrid

It’s always a pleasure taking your dog on holiday to the Spanish capital. There are exhibitions such as the Fresh Gallery in which you can enter with your dog and even hotels like the Petit Palace chain that have rooms with a bed and a meal for dogs.

Both Madrid and Barcelona allow dogs on their metros as long as they have a muzzle and are on a lead.

Holidays with dos around Madrid

Around Madrid you can find hiking trails in the Sierra de Guadarrama where you can leave the stress of the city behind. If you’re looking for a route with a swim stop, then head for the Cascada del Purgatorio waterfall in Rascafría.

Travel Spain dog

A unique destination close to Madrid but highly recommended is Toledo , known as “the city of three cultures”, where Muslims, Christians and Jews used to live side by side. As well as getting lost down the narrow streets and strolling alongside the Tagus river, we give you the chance to go on a tour of Toledo’s most symbolic places, with a visit to a local farm included . We will travel in a 4×4 convertible and you will be able to sample Spain’s best products including some its exceptional wines.

As you can see, travelling in Spain with your dog is a great pleasure. But if you really want to share a unique experience in Madrid, Barcelona or their surroundings with your dog, then you can count on World Experience .

Bark Air, a new airline for dogs, set to take its first flight

By Megan Cerullo

Edited By Anne Marie Lee

Updated on: May 23, 2024 / 10:57 AM EDT / MoneyWatch

Bark Air, a new airline that puts dogs before their human companions, will take its first flight Thursday. Its sold-out maiden voyage will depart New York for Los Angeles at 4:00 p.m. EST.

Bark, a pet company founded in 2011 that sells dog food and other products, announced the new aviation experience for canines in April. It's the second air travel service to market itself as catering to pets before human passengers, recognizing how stressful and uncomfortable commercial air travel can be for animals . United Kingdom-based public charter operator K9 jets also lets passengers' pets travel next to them in the aircraft cabin, versus in crates in commercial aircraft cargo holds.

"We are excited to take the insights we've learned over the years to create an experience that is truly dog-first, which is drastically different from just accepting dogs – from the ground to the skies," Bark co-founder and CEO Matt Meeker said in April. "We believe this initiative will elevate awareness of our brand's mission and values, introduce more dog lovers to the Bark family, and help enrich the lives of dogs and their people around the world."

The first flight from New York to Los Angeles Thursday is sold out, according to Bark's booking website. The company said it launched the air travel experience to make long-distance travel more comfortable for dogs that don't fit under the seats in front of passengers on commercial aircraft.

"Too often, dogs are denied travel, confined to a duffle bag, or endure the stress of flying in cargo," the company said in announcing the flights in April.

testflight-5.jpg

Bark Air says it will offer "white paw service" to its canine customers — who'll even get to socialize with other dogs in what the company calls a "dog-centric" cabin configuration. Like first-class human passengers, dogs on board will be offered treats, noise-canceling ear muffs, a beverage of their choice and other surprises, the company said.

Initially, the service will fly between the New York City metro area and Los Angeles, as well as from New York to London. More routes will be added soon, the company said.

Bark Air will operate as a public charter service, flying on spacious Gulfstream G5 jets. It does not own or operate any aircraft. Each dog ticket comes with a pass for one human. Families may also purchase additional passes. Children under the age of 18 are not permitted aboard. There are no size or breed restrictions for dogs.

testflight-10.jpg

The service doesn't come cheap. A one-way flight from New York to Los Angeles in June costs $6,000 for one dog and one human. A New York to London ticket costs $8,000.

Meeker acknowledged the service's high cost in a May letter, but said he expects prices to come down as demand climbs.

"This is cost-prohibitive for most families, but less expensive than most options today. And this is also how most innovative products and services began," he said. "Televisions, telephones, VCRs and DVD players, to automobiles, train and boat travel, and, yes, even human air travel — all of these started with very high prices until demand was proven and the costs could be brought lower by serving the masses."

Megan Cerullo is a New York-based reporter for CBS MoneyWatch covering small business, workplace, health care, consumer spending and personal finance topics. She regularly appears on CBS News 24/7 to discuss her reporting.

Air travel has gone to the dogs — literally. Here’s what to know about BARK Air

Flying with your dog in first class may sound like a far-fetched dream for many pet lovers. But a new boutique airline launching this week aims to make the “white paw experience” a reality.

BARK Air describes itself as “the world’s first air travel experience designed specifically for dogs first, and their human companions second.”

“BARK Air has taken the white glove experience typical of a human’s first-class experience and redirected all that pampering to pooches – from booking to arrival, to in-flight services and disembarkation, dogs will truly be the VIPs and treated to a positively luxurious, curated experience,” it said in an announcement last month .

BARK Air officially got off the ground on Wednesday afternoon, when its inaugural flight ferried six dogs of varying breeds — from Chihuahuas to a Golden Retriever — and 11 humans (both passengers and crew) from New York to Los Angeles.

The Very Important Pups were treated to chicken-flavored puppuccinos, special cupcakes and a shoe — on a platter — to snack on, according to BARK Chief of Staff Katharine Enos. She told NPR over email that there was “no drama on board.”

“Brooklyn (dachshund) and Eddy (golden) [were] friends and played and the little dogs took nice long naps most of the way,” she added. “After lunch it was nap time for everyone. No potty accidents on board or stolen food either! Everyone felt connected in the way we were obsessed with our dogs.”

The airline is a subsidiary of BARK, the company behind dog-focused brands like the subscription service BarkBox. Co-founder and CEO Matt Meeker says he’s been working towards this idea for over a decade.

He was inspired by his late Great Dane Hugo, who traveled with him often but could never fit on a plane — like many non-lap dogs, Hugo would have had to fly in the cargo area rather than the cabin. (Meeker even flew from Florida to New York in a cargo crate to show how disorienting that experience can be, as part of Bark Air’s promotional campaign.)

Many airlines have tightened restrictions for emotional support animals on board in recent years. The logistics and cost of travel can be a highly emotional issue for many families who don’t want to leave their dogs behind when relocating, let alone vacationing, Meeker says.

“We don't think of ourselves as selling dog toys or seats on an airline,” Meeker told NPR in a phone interview. “We think of ourselves as selling awesome emotional experiences with your dog.”

It’s also an expensive one: BARK Air flights between New York and LA cost $6,000 for one dog and one human (or one human and two dogs collectively under 50 pounds) in each direction, and one-way flights between New York and London go for $8,000.

Potential customers were quick to bemoan the cost, with one social media user joking that her pup would need to start selling “paw pics” to make it work.

Meeker acknowledged that “the price is high, and it’s too high.” But he said innovations, especially related to transportation, often become less expensive over time — and he hopes that will be the case with BARK Air, too.

“We have pretty clear ways of bringing those prices down if the demand is there, and that’s what we aim to do,” he added. “We want to make this affordable and accessible for as many dogs as possible.”

The airline aims to pamper passengers, both pups and people

On BARK Air, the drinks come in bowls, leashes replace seat belts, champagne is made of chicken broth and the bathroom is, well, anywhere.

“When they feel they need to go, they go,” Meeker said of the dog. “And then we clean up after them. And then we clean the plane between every turn.”

It’s one of the many unique perks — and logistical challenges — of an airline for dogs. BARK has partnered with a New York-based charter company called Talon Air, which provides the pilots, flight crew and plane, a Gulfstream V.

The jets accommodate 14 human passengers, but BARK is capping them at 10 to offer extra space. Meeker says it aims to make the experience as comfortable as possible for dogs, starting “even before the flight.”

BARK Air will do a “pup intake” to learn about the dogs’ temperament and preferences. On the day of the flight, humans are advised to show up an hour early to the terminal, where they’ll present their ID and walk straight onto the plane.

“And so what we've bypassed there is a busy commercial airport and a very rigid TSA environment, and treating the dog as just another piece of luggage,” Meeker said.

Dogs and humans get served their meals — and stow away their toys — before the flight takes off to avoid potential territorial disputes. Once in the air, dogs are offered perks like a spa treatment and blankets covered with pheromones for extra comfort. Meeker says the in-flight crew is trained in dog CPR and “fear-free behavioral practices.”

The airline has no dog size or breed restrictions, but humans must be over 18 (aka 126 in dog years). Once on board, humans are advised to keep their dogs leashed as much as possible and ask before approaching others’.

Meeker, who traveled with his dog on two recent test flights between Florida and New York, says people hoped the dogs would misbehave for purposes of the experiment — but they did anything but, even during moments of “pretty significant turbulence.”

“They calmed everyone down, they floated around, they'd take someone’s seat,” he said. “A strange dog, like, not your dog, would wander up, sit on the couch next to you, put their head in your lap, and it’s like, ‘Oh, that’s great.’ ”

He added, “I don’t know why I’m surprised by this, but the dogs made it magical.”

Demand already appears to be taking off

Meeker said the initial reaction to BARK Air’s launch has been “really overwhelming and positive.”

BARK Air is offering about four round-trip cross-country flights a month, with several already sold out for June and July. It’s already planning to expand its routes, starting with a New York to Paris trip beginning in the fall.

“About a third of people apparently buy their air travel six months in advance,” he said. “So we just published our schedule through the end of the year in order to serve that crowd better.”

The airline is soliciting requests for additional destinations, and Meeker said it received over 15,000 in the first week alone.

How to keep your pets cool and safe during a heat wave

They’ve heard from military families who are moving, people who travel for business and New Yorkers spending summers outside the city — all of whom want their dogs there too. Meeker also noted significant demand from snowbirds who want to go south with their dogs for the winter and many requests for flights in and out of Chicago.

“We're just processing that information and choosing the dates, and we're learning a lot,” he added.

He hopes the forthcoming data will allow the company to make more cost-effective decisions soon.

“We’re probably doing this the most expensive way we could, which is chartering a private plane from a private owner,” he explained.

The next step would be to make a longer commitment with the charter company, leasing the plane for a month or even a year to bring down costs. Even better would be buying and outfitting a plane. Meeker has his eye on a Boeing 747 model with a back half dedicated to cargo that could serve as an additional source of revenue.

He says this team already has a design that would feature private cabins with lay-flat beds, a central “dog park” and a bar, for dog and human socializing, respectively.

“That’s the dream,” he added. “But it’ll take a little bit of time to get there.”

A New Airline for Dogs Takes Flight

Bark Air made its inaugural flight from New York and Los Angeles this week. But seats are pricey, costing up to $8,000

Sarah Kuta

Daily Correspondent

Ask any pet parent, and they’ll tell you the same thing: Traveling with dogs is complicated.

Taking a road trip is one option, but driving can add hours or even days to the journey. And flying, while faster, presents its own set of challenges.

When it comes to pets who aren’t service animals, most commercial airlines only allow small dogs—typically, those weighing up to 20 pounds—to accompany their human owners in the aircraft’s cabin. And, even then, these companies require owners to keep their pup in a pet carrier that must be stowed under the seat in front of them for the entire flight. Larger dogs are relegated to the cargo hold beneath the plane—a terrifying and potentially dangerous experience.

Now, a new “ dog-first” airline aims to relieve all that stress. Bark Air , an airline created by the pet company Bark , took its inaugural flight on Thursday, transporting a sold-out plane full of pups and their human companions from New York to Los Angeles.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by BARK Air (@barkair)

“Right now, at an altitude of 30,000 feet, there is a flight filled with dogs,” the company wrote on Instagram . “Unlike any flight before it, these dogs are not merely an afterthought, nor are they treated as cargo or a burden to the crew and fellow travelers. Here, dogs are the foremost priority.”

To deliver its “white paw” service, the company is partnering with Talon Air , a private jet charter company that flies Gulfstream G500 jets.

Before takeoff, dogs can snack on treats and wear noise-canceling earmuffs and calming jackets to ensure they have a stress-free flight. Once in the air, flight attendants serve dogs their beverage of choice to help with any ear discomfort as the plane ascends and descends. Pups can choose whether to socialize with other dogs or stick close to their human.

“We think dogs should be right next to you on the seat, getting the same or—in our case—even better treatment and experiences than people do,” Dave Stangle, Bark’s vice president of brand marketing, tells the Points Guy ’s Harriet Baskas.

The flights aren’t cheap: It costs $6,000 for a dog and its human to book a one-way flight from New York to Los Angeles, or $8,000 for a ticket from New York to London.

The company’s executives acknowledged that the prices are “cost-prohibitive for most families,” but said they expect the flights to get cheaper as demand increases, CBS News ’ Megan Cerullo reports.

“Televisions, telephones, VCRs and DVD players, to automobiles, train and boat travel, and, yes, even human air travel—all of these started with very high prices until demand was proven and the costs could be brought lower by serving the masses,” wrote Matt Meeker, Bark’s chief executive officer and co-founder, in a May letter quoted by CBS News.

United States airlines transported 188,223 animals in 2022, the most recent year with available data from the Department of Transportation . Of those, seven animals died, one was injured and one was lost, resulting in an incident rate of 0.48 per 10,000. That’s similar to the prepandemic rate of 0.47 incidents per 10,000 animals in 2019, when U.S. airlines transported 404,556 animals.

Though the overall rate is low, airline incidents involving pets often make headlines . Even when flights go smoothly, many dogs experience discomfort and anxiety while flying in the cargo hold. To illustrate this point, Meeker volunteered to ride inside a crate in the cargo hold of a plane on a nearly four-hour flight from south Florida to New York City.

“I don’t know why any person would ever choose to do this to their dog,” Meeker said in a video posted on Instagram . “It’s an absolute horror show back here. There has to be a better way.”

Bark is not the first company to offer dog-friendly flights. K9 Jets , which launched in 2022 , offers pay-per-seat private jet service for dogs and their owners. The company flies to Dubai, Dublin, Florida, Frankfurt, Hawaii, Lisbon, London, Los Angeles, Milan, New Jersey and Paris. It can also accommodate cats, though it requires them to stay inside a carrier for the entire flight.

Some private jet companies, including NetJets and VistaJet, also cater to pets on flights. VistaJet , for example, serves “prime cuts of fresh meat and fish” upon request.

“I just don’t understand why the airlines don’t recognize the business opportunity,” Rusty Rueff, who has a French bulldog named Theo, told the New York Times ’ Christine Chung last year. “We’ll do anything for our pets, just like we’ll do anything for our children.”

Luxe Dog Stroller and Car Seat

I've spotted dogs in strollers in Atlanta, Boston and in my city, Brooklyn. In Indianapolis, I watched a dog being happily strolled down a parade route. At first it all seemed a bit silly, but now I better understand why people are pushing their pets.

"Small dogs benefit since they sometimes don't have the stamina for walking far — although my little dog begs to differ," says Megan Conrad , B.V.M.S., a veterinarian with Wellhaven Pet Health who frequently weighs in on petcare for the Good Housekeeping Institute and who owns two pups.

"Dog strollers are also useful for dogs with neuropathies, non-painful nerve conditions that causes difficulty walking," Conrad says. "Or for an elderly dog that can't walk as far as it used to but still wants to be out." We've also noticed that some pandemic-era pups have a hard time separating from their owner and would rather ride along on errands than be left at home. For this list our Lab pros at looked at more than a dozen top-selling dog strollers and tested among dogs of different sizes. We also poured through online reviews and Reddit forums, and consulted pet owners while researching brands we've come to trust.

This smooth-rolling set of wheels can hold one large or two small dogs, up to 50 pounds in total, thanks to two separate tethers. The bed is wide and, to our human hands, felt comfy and springy. "I've pushed baby strollers and this is totally comparable," said a tester, who used it with a 19-pound Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. "The dog loved it."

The Promenade has the largest and most sturdy basket of all the ones we tested. You can't just reach into it; you'll need to bend down and unzip a zipper at the back to access the space. The nice part about that is nothing can fall out when you zip it back up. There's also a useful pet parent console with two cupholders and a storage compartment that clicks shut.

We found folding the stroller to be fairly easy during testing, though it did take a minute to learn the process. Our only hiccup was the assembly; you must insert two pins into the back wheels, which takes good eyesight and dexterity. (You might need to phone a friend!) But even with that, it came together in less than 15 minutes. Gen7Pets also makes our favorite roller bag pet carrier .

You can find even under-$50 dog strollers out there, but our experts felt they were just too rickety to recommend. We prefer this value choice, which comes in under $100, but has relatively substantial wheels and an overall sturdy feel. Happy Trails Lite is also easy to fold and the lower storage basket, though only 10" x 10", is deep enough at 7 inches so that contents don't roll out. Plus, there are two cupholders.

The top dome shuts with a latch, not a zipper, which allows you to quickly secure your dog or let it back out . It's a nice feature for owners and also for nervous pets who don't like the sound of a zipper. At press time, 75 percent of the Happy Trails Lite amazon reviews were five-star ones.

This is best suited for small dogs as it only holds up to 25 pounds and the bed is 22 inches long. Though the seat is compact, the handle is still 40 inches tall, a suitable height for tall pet parents. It's fairly lightweight at 13 pounds, though that means it bounces a bit over the sidewalk so it's not as smooth-rolling as our top choice.

This lightweight choice also comes in under $100. If you're nervous about assembling a stroller, this one is no sweat. We were able to snap the wheels on and have it ready to go in about four minutes . For such a lightweight stroller (at 11 pounds), it rolled well and turned easily while our tester was walking with it, thanks to its swiveling front wheels. The bed itself is small (only 19 inches long), but it's nearly 10 inches deep and our 20-pound tester dog enjoyed lying in this one and peering out the front mesh panel.

The Frisco brand is a Chewy exclusive. We've previously praised Frisco's hard-to-destroy plush toys for dogs. Chewy customers report using this dog stroller for French Bulldogs and similar-sized pets.

The detachable cupholder is fairly loose, so our tester used it for a water bottle only. ("I would not trust it with a cup of take-out coffee," she said.) The storage basket is shallow yet fits several dog toys. Folding the stroller is a bit awkward but, once folded and locked, it's slim and easy to store.

With its removable pet bed, the P2 can function as both a dog stroller and a dog car seat — plus it can be a dog carrier, essentially giving you three products for the price of one. You fold the frame out of your way and cart the bed as a carrier using the shoulder strap, making this a nice choice if you frequently transition your pet in and out of your car. Your vehicle's seat belt can attach to straps on the side of the carrier and hold it in place in your backseat. (Read the manual carefully for full instructions.)

"Folding and unfolding is really simple and works well," said a tester who used this with a 10-pound miniature poodle. "The only thing is that it's not great for going over big cracks on a walkway or sidewalk. We hit hard a few times and stopped instantly." Some of the three-wheelers on our list rolled better over bumps, but the P2 does fine if your sidewalks are relatively smooth or you push your dog around a simple park path. This could also be a perfect choice for getting your dog through a crowded station or airport (though if you need the carrier itself to fit under an airplane seat, we have smaller choices in our dog carrier story).

Leatherette details give this a high-end look and a durable feel, especially at the handlebar. The sling basket is the most open and shallow on our list and not able to hold much. There's also a basic, detachable cup holder that hangs off the side.

A dog stroller with large tires and a fixed front wheel allows running or jogging with your pet — extra exercise for you, and a fun outing for them. The 12-inch tires on this model are gel-filled, not air-filled tires, so they provide a smooth ride over most terrain yet can't go flat (unlike some other popular dog joggers on the market, which have to be sold with air pumps and which need more tire maintenance).

Because of the robust tires and frame, you can take a medium-sized or fairly heavy dog in this, as long as it's less than 75 pounds and 28 inches long. That means this is also a great choice even if you only intend to walk but you have a chonky dog who weighs more than the 30 pounds that most regular dog strollers can hold.

Like other Pet Gear strollers, this is zipperless; the mesh latches shut for easier entry and exit. There's plenty of mesh ventilation along all sides for breathability and a panoramic view out the front. It comes with a console that has two cupholders. The basket on this is shallow and both the assembly and the fold are a little more difficult than with other models, because of those big tires.

If you've got two dogs, you'll want a double dog stroller. Actually this double-decker model has two tethers in each of the two compartments, so you could safely transport up to four pets if you've got a brood of small dogs or stroller-loving cats. The brand touts this as a way, for instance, of taking multiple pets to a dog or cat show.

The top compartment is small — less than 16 inches long, and only able to hold 13 pounds — but if you aren't using it for a second pet, it can instead make a nice basket for your own storage. So, say, you're visiting an outdoor market, you can fill that up while your dog sits below. (That larger bed on the bottom holds a dog up to 33 pounds.)

There's no underseat basket storage on this one, but there are pockets on the back of each compartment as well as two cupholders. Assembling is on the easy side but it really helps if you watch the instruction video, which is the second brand video to play on the product's Amazon page.

Are you looking to stroll a big and heavy dog? This model from Pet Gear can hold a dog up to 150 pounds and nearly 32 inches long. The front wheels can swivel 360 degrees to help you steer your big bud. You also don't have to do as much heavy lifting with this low-to-the ground dog stroller — you can coax your dog to step up 11 inches onto the dog bed from the side, or from the back . This also makes it a great choice for dogs with an injured leg or a similar health complication.

We like the adjustable handle for the pet parent who is doing the pushing; most other dog strollers have only one set handle height. There's no cupholder or storage basket on this one.

You latch your dog inside, no zipping required. It only has one tether, so it's meant for a single rider. A sun-roof panel zips open so your dog can stick his head out of the top (truly adorable). You do need a wide door to accommodate this going in and out of your home; it might be best if you can store it in a garage.

It was only a matter of time before pet strollers got as fancy as baby strollers, and this one is a high-end modular system that functions as a gorgeous stroller, car seat and carrier. This set is made by Nuna, which makes our favorite baby stroller for frequent travelers , and the Roscoe pet stroller has the smooth wheels and easy steering you'd want from gear with this price tag.

The "pod" that your dog rides in, the Maeve, clicks on and off the stroller frame. In car-seat mode there's a stability leg you can use and built-in side impact protection. The brand says its dog car seat meets United Nations ECE child-restraint standards and is even crash-tested (for dogs, not children), labeling the whole thing a "pet protection system." It could be a worthwhile investment for people who drive often with their dog in the backseat.

Our tester, however, only used this as a stroller. "We are training a puppy and this is helpful when she gets tired," they said. " There's a plush mattress and also two machine-washable mattress covers, plus nice details like leatherette trim, a pet-parent organizer on the handle, and both a short and long tether for the carrier. This model is for medium dogs; Tavo also makes a set for small dogs .

How we test dog strollers

a cavalier king charles spaniel rides in a stroller down a rainy sidewalk, part of good housekeeping testing the best dog strollers

Good Housekeeping Institute pros evaluate pet gear (and kid gear) regularly, and we frequently publish pet-care advice .

For this list of the best dog strollers, we considered bestsellers and new dog strollers from reputable brands. In home tests conducted by both our experts and consumer testers we assessed more than a dozen models, timing how long it took to assemble each stroller. Then we pushed dog strollers along bumpy sidewalks with a dog inside and rated the ease of folding after our walks. We ranked strollers for extras like cupholders and storage. Finally, we interviewed pet owners who use dog strollers, read through online reviews to be sure we weren't missing any important details and checked Reddit forums before finishing our recommendations.

What to look for when shopping for the best dog stroller

line break

When picking out a dog stroller for your best friend, consider:

✔️ Weight limit: Compact dog strollers can't carry as much weight as the larger strollers, but it's important for your pet's safety that you find a model that can hold your dog's weight. If you want to use a dog stroller to carry two pups, add their weight together and make sure you buy a stroller that can accommodate that total.

✔️ One tether or more: A must-have safety feature is a tether inside the dog stroller that attaches to your pet's collar, so it can't leap out. If you want to stroll with two dogs, look for a model that includes two tethers.

✔️ Bed length and width: Measure the length of your dog and be sure it is a little shorter than the length of the dog bed on the stroller. When in doubt, go larger — it's best that your dog has some room to turn around and get comfortable. One dog-stroller brand recommends buying a stroller with a bed at least 2 inches longer than your dog. Look at the width too, and measure how wide your dog is while sitting or lying down to be sure they won't be cramped.

✔️ Strolling or jogging tires: Most dog strollers are meant for walking, in which case small plastic wheels will do. If you intend to run with the stroller or tackle rough terrain like a hiking path, look for a model with larger wheels, which provide more stability and a smoother ride. If you'll be jogging, the front wheel should lock so you can go straight without the stroller tending to veer to the side, which can happen if you try to move fast with a stroller that has a swiveling front wheel.

While large tires roll better, they'll add weight to the stroller and prevent it from folding as compactly as a stroller with small wheels. Pick which you want more: A heavy stroller that rolls smoothly but is still somewhat large when folded, or a lightweight and compact stroller that bounces a bit over cracks and bumps.

✔️ Number of tires: Eight weak tires are worse than three high-quality ones, so quality counts far more than quantity. In general, a stroller with three wheel positions is made to take on rougher terrain (but not always; again, check how big and robust those tires are first). Strollers with wheels at all four corners generally provide a stable ride on a smooth path.

Can a dog ride in a baby stroller?

a brown curly dog rides safely harnessed in to a dog stroller, part of a good housekeeping story on the best dog strollers

No, pets should always ride in a pet-specific stroller, like Mickey is doing (pictured). Don't put your dog in a baby stroller or a toy stroller because:

✔️ Dog strollers have a tether to clip to the collar so your pet doesn't leap out . If your dog sees a squirrel and wants to give chase, you won't have a runaway as long as your dog is clipped in.

✔️ The seat is a flat bed in a pet stroller, so that your dog can lie down. A baby stroller is usually angled, not flat, and it's not comfortable for an animal who either wants to rest or stand up and see the sights.

✔️ Most pet strollers can be completely enclosed with mesh that zips or latches shut . This is another way to prevent a dog or cat from escaping, and it lets you provide a bit of privacy so your pet isn't bothered by curious kids or nosy canines.

On the flip side, you should never put a baby in a pet stroller. Pet strollers have none of the safety features required for a baby or a toddler. We also noticed in testing that there are plenty of pinch points when you fold these dog strollers. If you're opening or closing a dog stroller and have a young child, be sure they stand off to the side. For your kid's use, see any of our favorite baby strollers .

How to care for your dog stroller

a bulldog in an orange booyah dog stroller, part of a good housekeeping story on the best dog strollers

Pet strollers are made with water-resistant fabric to repel rain and to prevent the bed from getting ruined if your dog has an accident. All parts can be wiped down with a disinfectant wipe for cleaning. If the wheels get muddy you can rinse them with a hose.

The interior pads can be removed and washed with soap and water in a sink, then air-dried. Most have a stiff plastic or a wooden board inside to provide stability, so they can't go in the washing machine.

Many users report lining a stroller with a dog blanket or pet bed to make it more plush. Teddy (pictured) often visits the beach so his owners line his dog stroller with a beach blanket. Some brands sell bolsters; for instance there's a fuzzy stroller pad that matches with our value pick, Happy Trails stroller from Pet Gear (and it can be machine-washed).

BARK Air describes itself as “the world’s first air travel experience designed specifically for dogs first, and their human companions second.”

"BARK Air has taken the white glove experience typical of a human's first-class experience and redirected all that pampering to pooches – from booking to arrival, to in-flight services and disembarkation, dogs will truly be the VIPs and treated to a positively luxurious, curated experience," it said in an announcement last month .

Introducing BARK Air: A 100% totally real airline for dogs. We're dog people, and we are tired of there being no truly dog-friendly options when it comes to air travel.

(Meeker even flew from Florida to New York in a cargo crate to show how disorienting that experience can be, as part of Bark Air's promotional campaign.)

Many airlines have tightened restrictions for emotional support animals on board in recent years. The logistics and cost of travel can be a highly emotional issue for many families who don't want to leave their dogs behind when relocating, let alone vacationing, Meeker says.

The airline doesn't have dog size or breed restrictions but only allows humans over age 18 (or 126 in dog years).

The airline doesn't have dog size or breed restrictions but only allows humans over age 18 (or 126 in dog years).

BARK Air is partnering with charter company Talon Air to offer several flights per month. Some are already sold out for June and July.

BARK Air is partnering with charter company Talon Air to offer several flights per month. Some are already sold out for June and July.
