This richly detailed and beautifully illustrated book provides a miscellany of historic features and curiosities to spot as you wander around the capital. London's Underground: The Story of the Tube

It is impossible to imagine London without the Tube: the beating heart of the city, the Underground shuttles over a billion passengers each year below its busy streets and across its leafy suburbs. The distinctive roundel, colour-coded maps and Johnston typeface have become design classics, recognised and imitated worldwide.

Opening in 1863, the first sections were operated by steam engines, yet throughout its long history the Tube has been at the forefront of contemporary design, pioneering building techniques, electrical trains and escalators, and business planning. Architects such as Leslie W. Green and Charles Holden developed a distinctively English version of Modernism, and the latest stations for the Jubilee line extension, Overground and Elizabeth line carry this aesthetic forward into the twenty-first century.

In this major work published in association with Transport for London and now updated, Tube expert Oliver Green traces the history of the Underground, following its troubles and triumphs, its wartime and peacetime work, and the essential part it has played in shaping London’s economy, geography, tourism and identity. Specially commissioned photography by Benjamin Graham (UK Landscape Photographer of the Year 2017) brings the story to life in vivid portraits of London Underground’s stations, tunnels and trains.

Churchill: Walking with Destiny

In this landmark biography of Winston Churchill based on extensive new material, the true genius of the man, statesman and leader can finally be fully seen and understood--by the bestselling, award-winning author of Napoleon and The Last King of America.

When we seek an example of great leaders with unalloyed courage, the person who comes to mind is Winston Churchill: the iconic, visionary war leader immune from the consensus of the day, who stood firmly for his beliefs when everyone doubted him. But how did young Winston become Churchill? What gave him the strength to take on the superior force of Nazi Germany when bombs rained on London and so many others had caved? In Churchill, Andrew Roberts gives readers the full and definitive Winston Churchill, from birth to lasting legacy, as personally revealing as it is compulsively readable.

Shakespeare: The World as Stage

William Shakespeare, the most celebrated poet in the English language, left behind nearly a million words of text, but his biography has long been a thicket of wild supposition arranged around scant facts. With a steady hand and his trademark wit, Bill Bryson sorts through this colorful muddle to reveal the man himself. His Shakespeare is like no one else's—the beneficiary of Bryson's genial nature, his engaging skepticism, and a gift for storytelling unrivaled in our time.

Unruly: The Ridiculous History of England's Kings and Queens

Think you know the kings and queens of England? Think again.

In Unruly, David Mitchell explores how early England’s monarchs, while acting as feared rulers firmly guiding their subjects’ destinies, were in reality a bunch of lucky bastards who were mostly as silly and weird in real life as they appear today in their portraits.

Taking us back to King Arthur (spoiler: he didn’t exist), Mitchell tells the founding story of post-Roman England up to the reign of Elizabeth I (spoiler: she dies). It’s a tale of narcissists, inadequate self-control, middle-management insurrection, uncivil wars, and a few Cnuts, as the English evolved from having their crops stolen by the thug with the largest armed gang to bowing and paying taxes to a divinely anointed king.

How this happened, who it happened to, and why the hell it matters are all questions that Mitchell answers with brilliance, wit, and the full erudition of a man who once studied history—and won’t let it off the hook for the mess it’s made.

A funny book that takes history seriously, Unruly is for anyone who has ever wondered how the British monarchy came to be—and who is to blame.

A Visitor's Guide to Jane Austen's England

Immerse yourself in the vanished world inhabited by Austen’s contemporaries. Packed with detail and anecdotes, this is an intimate exploration of how the middle and upper classes lived from 1775, the year of Austen’s birth, to the coronation of George IV in 1820. Sue Wilkes skillfully conjures up all aspects of daily life within the period, drawing on contemporary diaries, illustrations, letters, novels, travel literature, and archives.

  • Were all unmarried affluent men really “in want of a wife”?
  • Where would a young lady seek adventure?
  • Would “taking the waters” at Bath and other spas kill or cure you?
  • Was Lizzy Bennet bitten by bed-bugs while traveling?
  • What would you wear to a country ball or a dance at Almack’s?
  • Would Mr. Darcy have worn a corset?
  • What hidden horrors lurked in elegant Regency houses?

The Time Traveler's Guide to Regency Britain: A Handbook for Visitors to 1789–1830

A vivid and immersive history of Georgian England that gives its reader a firsthand experience of life as it was truly lived during the era of Jane Austen, Percy Bysshe Shelley, and the Duke of Wellington.

This is the age of Jane Austen and the Romantic poets; the paintings of John Constable and the gardens of Humphry Repton; the sartorial elegance of Beau Brummell and the poetic license of Lord Byron; Britain's military triumphs at Trafalgar and Waterloo; the threat of revolution and the Peterloo massacre. In the latest volume of his celebrated series of Time Traveler's Guides, Ian Mortimer turns to what is arguably the most-loved period in British history: the Regency, or Georgian England.

A time of exuberance, thrills, frills and unchecked bad behavior, it was perhaps the last age of true freedom before the arrival of the stifling world of Victorian morality. At the same time, it was a period of transition that reflected unprecedented social, economic, and political change. And like all periods in history, it was an age of many contradictions—where Beethoven's thundering Fifth Symphony could premier in the same year that saw Jane Austen craft the delicate sensitivities of Persuasion.

London is huge. Covering more than 600 square miles, it’s colloquially defined as being inside the M25 motorway. But looking a little closer, it’s made up of 32 boroughs – a word most outside of Britain struggle with, when it comes to both pronouncing and understanding as a concept that differs to neighbourhoods – but each has its own identity, from the hipster East in Hackney, to the touristy West End in the City of Westminster.

London is home to a fascinatingly diverse population of around eight million people, and has something for everyone – whether it’s losing yourself in its world-class galleries, luxuriating in your favourite hotel for high tea, or roaming its many beautiful Victorian parks. Whatever you’re after, London undoubtedly has it, and we’ve selected our favourite guidebooks to help you find it.

1. Insight Guides: Experience London: £9.99, APA Publications

travel book london

This book from Insight Guides offers people what they really want: experiences, and over 100 of them at that. At the front of the guide, there are 12 pages offering quick ideas for what you might be in the mood for, from something romantic to a night on the town – perfect for when you need a quick decision. The rest of the book is laid out in coloured-coded neighbourhoods and lists experiences with a detailed map in each section, including breakfast at The Wolseley in Mayfair to finding upcoming art at the Whitechapel gallery in the east. You also get a London destination app called Walking Eye , which is essentially the book on your phone.

2. London: Monocle Travel Guides: £12.99, Die Gestalten Verlag

travel book london

You may be forgiven for thinking this hardback edition with a striking front cover looks like a coffee table book, but it’s pretty much the Bible of “hidden gem” guidebooks. Aimed at travellers who are spending a few days in the city – either for work or pleasure – it offers up specific itineraries and cool ideas, from the best areas for independent shops to where to take clients for superb cocktails. And there’s one thing the book specifically leaves out – sorry Madame Tussauds, you won’t be mentioned in here. It has a code system of letters to identify each type of sightseeing such as C for culture and W for walks, a monochrome map at the front and loads of colour photography throughout. Also included is a section of 12 essays, written by the author and Monocle staff on urban exploration.

3. Wallpaper* City Guide London: £6.95, Phaidon

travel book london

Design magazine Wallpaper* has a reputation for being edgy, but this pocket-sized guide, at just 101 pages, doesn’t sacrifice substance for style. Aimed at the design-conscious traveller, it has sections on urban life and “architours”, where you go on the hunt for great buildings, including the Saw Swee Hock Student Centre on Sheffield Street to the National Theatre on the South Bank. Aside from London’s core attractions, it gives you an insider’s knowledge to the city. It suggests the coolest restaurants with fabulous interiors, new design-led hotels, lively nightlife spots and influential galleries – all with colour photography. There’s a section to write notes towards the back, and a fold-out map. And best of all, it has a little price tag to match its size.

4. Not For Tourists Guide to London 2017: £12.99, Not For Tourists

travel book london

Screaming out to those who prefer to refer to themselves as “travellers” rather than the much-maligned “tourist”, the 2017 edition of this chunky book is crammed full of tips on where to eat, drink, dance and more, describing its selection as the “most delicious, intoxicating, awe-inspiring, groovy destinations” in the city (which may be a little over the top). Split into neighbourhoods which are more like areas, from Covent Garden to Hampstead Village, it gives details on what to do in each of the 60 or so areas in the form of an alphabetical list of attractions and amenities, all on one condensed page, with a full-page, detailed road map – it makes for a great directory. But what it lacks is actual photography.

5. Lonely Planet London: £14.99, Lonely Planet

travel book london

One of the best go-to travel publishers is Lonely Planet. Husband and wife Tony and Maureen wrote their first guide 40 years ago, back when the world wasn’t quite as accessible as today. But still, the name stands, as does its reliable reputation. The London city guide is the most comprehensive guide in its range and is rather chunky, owing to its detail and breadth of coverage. Its oft-copied, simplistic layout means it’s easy to dive in and find what you want and how to get thee. But what makes these guides so useful is its way of splitting up areas, and numbering sights on the maps of each section. Although you won’t find much off the beaten track in the top 16 attractions, its detail goes as far as offering notes on key transport phrases so you won’t get your contactless and Oyster cards mixed up, while the best sections include suggested places to visit based on your interests, doing it like a local and doing things for free.

6. Secret London – An Unusual Guide by Rachel Howard and Bill Nash: £12.99, Jonglez

travel book london

An unusual guide is exactly how this should be described. It’s most suited for second or third time travellers, unless you're not too bothered about ticking off Buckingham Palace et al the first time round, as this one avoids all the clichés. It shows you the often forgotten or dismissed parts of London, like the quirky architecture of Rudolf Steiner’s house, or the tropical garden of the Barbican conservatory, hidden within London’s brutalist landmark. It’s laid out in a very simple way: a full picture on the left with text on the right. The compact guide only has one map at the front, and only six areas which are grouped together, covering rather large areas starting with Westminster to Camden and finishing with South Bank to Brixton. It’s a great open-and-point option for exploring.

7. CITIx60: London: £9.99, Victionary

travel book london

With the most gorgeous covers and tonal, hand-drawn, cartoonish maps to draw you in, you really can judge this book by its cover. It’s short, concise and big on beautiful pictures. The guide was put together by 60 local creatives, including illustrator Marta Długołęcka and architect Richard Scott. Each take a page to show and tell you the best parts of their city, and with a picture of their face and short quote, you almost feel like it’s a friend giving you suggestions. It could be used whether you’re visiting for a day, week, month or a year, as it’s easy to dip in and refer to. In its 12 sections, architecture and mementos (a more appealing word for “souvenirs”) feature prominently and are followed by street markets, locally crafted beer and even tattoos, with quaint cartoons depicting each section. But don’t rely on it for accommodation as there are only two pages of high-end hotels.

8. Frommer’s London Day by Day: £9.99, FrommerMedia

travel book london

This day-by-day guide covers the best things to see and do, and how to do them in the most time-efficient way. Each of the tours – ranging from a full, all-encompassing day to a literary interest tour – uses a map that takes you from stop to stop. It begins with 16 of the best suggestions, which include the heading to the top of The Shard, afternoon tea at The Goring hotel and Shakespeare's Globe. The front map breaks down the neighbourhoods, postcodes and boundaries and boroughs, making it easy for people to grasp London’s geography. At the back, there is a tear-proof map, which is great for kids.

9. LOST iN London: A City Guide: £9.77, Lost in the City

travel book london

LOST iN guides started just over two years ago and are all about “getting lost” in the sights, sounds and smells of a city. They’re written by locals, and all the better for it, described as being for people with open minds and creative souls. Revealing the uniqueness of each city, creative locals are asked for recommendations on everything from music and fashion to art and architecture. Looks-wise, it comes across as a mix between a guidebook and an Instagram account, with lots cool photos – some taking up the whole page. And accompanying the print edition is a mobile app, which allows you to plan your trip on the go.

10. 36 Hours: London and Beyond, by the New York Times: £7.99, Taschen

travel book london

Ok, so it’s actually London “and beyond”, with sections on nearby locations such as Brighton and Cambridge, as well as the far-flung Isle of Skye, but as part of its 36 Hours series, which mainly features continents, the New York Times deemed London to be important enough for its second city-only guide. With a cloth-bound, racer-green cover, it’s certainly worth keeping to adorn your coffee table afterwards. The book is split into sections by area, with delightful added extras including “literary London” and “London with children 2, and gives excellent suggestions on where to eat cake or see an exhibition – two of London’s essential activities – with full-page coloured photography. But maps are small, so you might need to take another with you.

11. DK Eyewitness Travel Guide London: £14.99, Dorling Kindersley

travel book london

With 440 pages, the Eyewitness guide is an extremely detailed edition aimed at first-timers – or for families with young children who might ask “what, where and why” about everything. And with this book, you’ll actually have all the answers, with 140 illustrations and cutaways revealing what’s inside the major attractions. The main bulk is dedicated to colour-coded areas – mostly north of the river – but most of the other sights are in the “further afield” section, from Kew Gardens to Queen Elizabeth Park. The guided walks give street-by-street directions and times. The food and drink section is small and sticks to the classics, with no mention of pop-ups and street food markets. There’s a pull-out map at the back, 22 pages of other detailed maps, and a trusty tube map, all of which will help you navigate with ease.

The Verdict: London guide books

The Insight Guide’s “new experience” format is great for people who want the best, well, experience, where you can almost tick off the list as you go, and are great for people who live in the city too. Lonely Planet never fails, and the London guide is no different, but for something different for creatives seeking a local’s view of a city that’s full of design and architecture, the Wallpaper* or Citix60 are both insightful.

Tips for choosing the best UK travel guidebook for your trip

What are the characteristics of the main guide books available.

Guide books are not all the same and you can find a wide variation of styles written for travellers with different interests and budgets.

For example do you prefer a guide book with lots of photos, one that is more text heavy, one that covers the main sites or perhaps one that includes off the beaten track destinations?

Rick Steves provides an excellent introduction to the main sights (which he rates in order of importance for visitors though I don’t always agree with his choices!) plus his books offer sound practical advice.

Written for a US based audience his popularity has led to many of the places (hotels and restaurants) he recommends often becoming overbooked.

If you want more detailed information for specific areas or are looking for hidden gems or off the beaten track destinations one of the other guide books may be a better option (or used to supplement Rick’s guides)

Quick picks – Top 3 Rick Steve Guide Books for the UK

  • Great Britain – Rick Steves Great Britain
  • London – Rick Steves Pocket London
  • Edinburgh – Rick Steves Snapshot Edinburgh

Lonely Planet are the biggest publisher of guide books in the world. The have a good range of guide books for the UK which provide detailed information for all travel budgets.

I find their smaller pocket guide books particularly useful. The Lonely Planet Pocket Guide to London covers all the main sights with practical information and tips. As the name suggests it also fits into your pocket or bag for easy reference when out and about.

  • London – Top 10 London

  • Great Britain – DK Guide to Great Britain

Fodor’s Essential

Written by locals Fodor’s travel books have been around for over 80 years. They include detailed maps, itineraries and travel recommendations for all tastes and budgets.

As you will discover below there is a wide selection of guidebooks for UK travel. Some are pretty straightforward as they cover one nation, city or area of the UK such as

  • Guidebooks for London
  • Guidebooks for England
  • Guidebooks for Scotland
  • Guidebooks for Wales
  • Guidebooks for Ireland (including Northern Ireland)

However there are also guidebooks which cover Great Britain . This means that they will include travel information for England, Scotland and Wales. Northern Ireland will not be included in these guidebooks as it is not geographically part of Great Britain.

  • Check the date of publication – Buy the most up to date version to ensure access to current information.
  • Check that the book covers the areas you plan to visit – especially when purchasing for the UK!
  • If you are planning to take a guide book with you consider the weight and size! I often purchase a larger more detailed guide book to help with planning but pack a pocket size guide book for the trip. Many of the books are also available to purchase to download onto your Kindle or other e reader device.
  • If you plan to take a map you may find that some guide books have a pullout map included.

A Visit to Notting Hill Travel Bookshop: Everything You Need to Know in 2024

Notting Hill Travel Bookshop

Looking to recreate your favorite rom-com scene? Here’s my personalized guide and everything you need to know for a visit to the Notting Hill Travel Bookshop. Enjoy!

This post may contain affiliate links. Check out my  Disclosure & Privacy Policy  for more information.

We all know the scene. Julia Roberts slow pursue through the Notting Hill Travel Bookshop. Hugh Grant’s infamous eye-turn and blushed slew of book recommendations. The rom-com that hit London lovers by storm has all the nostalgia of Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts romance tucked into a quaint bookshop, in you guessed it, Notting Hill.

If you’re a Notting Hill fan like me and looking to turn your on-screen vicarious romance into real life — the Notting Hill Travel Bookshop is calling your name. Rom-com lovers have flocked from all parts of London (and abroad) to relive the Notting Hill scene. And if you’re reading this, I’m guessing you want to do the same.

Without further ado here’s everything you need to know about the Notting Hill Travel Bookshop. And to add to your Notting Hill obsession, I’ve popped in some of the movie quotes throughout the blog (definitely not a superfan).

William : I live in Notting Hill. You live in Beverly Hills. Everyone in the world knows who you are, my mother has trouble remembering my name. Anna Scott : I’m also just a girl, standing in front of a boy, asking him to love her. Notting Hill

Where is the Travel Bookshop in Notting Hill?

View this post on Instagram A post shared by The Notting Hill Bookshop (@nottinghillbookshop)

The travel bookshop sits pretty right off of Portobello Road at 13 Blenheim Crescent, London W11 2EE. The exteriors are hard to miss, with bright blue exteriors that match Hugh Grant’s infamous blue door (located at 280 Westbourne Park Road).

How to get to the Travel Bookshop in Notting Hill, London

The Travel bookshop in Notting Hill is around a 10-minute walk from Notting Hill Gate station. One of the easiest ways to reach Notting Hill Gate  (or anywhere in London really) is Citymapper. I rely on it endlessly and if you just pop in “Notting Hill Gate” you’ll get there without a hitch.

William  :  Would you like something to eat? Something to nibble? Apricots, soaked in honey? Quite why, no one knows, because it stops them tasting like apricots and makes them taste like honey… and if you wanted honey, you could just… buy honey. Instead of apricots. But nevertheless they’re yours if you want them. Notting Hill

When to go & What to buy at the Notting Hill Travel Bookshop

travel book london

Of course, due to it’s popularity, any time you go has the potential to be crowded. But I’d suggest going in the morning and pairing it a brunch in Notting Hill (Farm Girl Cafe if you’re wondering).

Although the shop originally exclusively sold travel books, they expanded into nearly every area of publishing (though travel is still the main focus). They’ve also got tons of beautiful gifts to get your hands on if you’ve got a super fan waiting at home. So in addition to recapturing your movie moments — I’d definitely suggest buying something while you’re here.

Notting Hill Bookshop Scene

I’m assuming if you’re reading this blog that you’re just as well-versed in this rom-com as I am. But just in case — here’s the bookshop scene. In the movie, Will (Hugh Grant) works in the travel bookshop where he meets Anna (Julia Roberts) a Hollywood Actress from America visiting London for a movie shoot.

As all rom-com’s go, one thing leads to another, they fall in love, the end. But there’s something about the movie and the bookshop that’s timeless. And if you’re a London lover like me, a visit to the Notting Hills Travel Bookshop will give you all the London feels again.

Anna Scott:   You know what they say about men with big feet William : No, I don’t, actually. What’s that ? Anna Scott : Big feet… large shoes. Notting Hill

A Quick History on the Travel Bookshop, Notting Hill

Before the bookshops claim to fame the Notting Hill Travel Bookshop was just a charming local bookshop on the streets of West London. The director Richard Curtis used to pass the bookshop all the time, promptly inspiring him for the set of the film. But when asked to use it as the filming location for Notting Hill…they refused.  So he ended up recreating the bookshop on set, and the rest is history.

Although the filming location took place elsewhere the location was quickly recognized as the heart-throb central it was — and thousands of fans flocked to the shop each year for their Notting Hill moment (me very included).

The store ended up closing in 2011 (after a long campaign to keep it going ). However it was bought by The Book Warehouse after the Travel Bookshop owner Simon Gaul realized his children weren’t interested in continuing the family-business. But the Book Warehouse made sure to keep the spirit of rom-com alive with the Notting Hill odes and the name, The Notting Hill Bookshop.

To clear up some quick confusion for my movie fans — the bookshop in the actual film is called “The Travel Book Company”, but the real store it’s based on was called “The Travel Bookshop”. Glad we got that out the way.

Anna Scott: Can I stay for a while? William: You can stay forever. Notting Hill

Proposals at the Bookshop

My rom-com heart melted when I found out just how many proposals take place in the bookshop! The owners told press that many couples come to drop on one knee and they even help with the planning process sometimes to make it extra special  (definitely not giving you ideas).

But if you can believe it — people really do come from as far as America (hey!) to Asia and Australia to make their Notting Hill I do’s.

Favorite heart-melting stories include….

  • A couple from China having their wedding photos taken inside the shop (goals)
  • A German couple combining Notting Hill and Harry Potter sneaking an engagement ring inside one of the books (I know he got brownie points)
  • An American couple coming back to the Notting Hill bookshop for their wedding anniversary (goals…and anniversary goals!)
Oh God, this is one of those key moments in life, when it’s possible you can be really, genuinely cool – and I’m failing 100%. I absolutely and totally and utterly adore you and I think you’re the most beautiful woman in the world and more importantly I genuinely believe and have believed for some time now that we can be best friends. What do YOU think? Honey, Notting Hill

Exploring the Notting Hill Area + Other Film Locations (Market Scene, Blue Door etc.)

Candace in Notting Hill, London

If you’re in the Notting Hill area it’d be a waste not to see the rest of the area. Personally, I suggest taking advantage of Portobello Market and popping into a pub like the Churchill Arms. And of course, grabbing a fresh read at the travel bookshop (you know… “just in case browsing turned to buying” ).

If the Notting Hill fandom moves ya, here are all the addresses of the film locations for the movie.

Now if you’ll excuse me I’m off to watch Notting Hill for the 11th time.

The Best Time to Book a Flight for Domestic, International, and Summer Travel

Here are our best tips for booking travel in 2024.

travel book london

When to Book Flights for Domestic Travel

When to book flights for international travel, when to book flights for summer 2024 travel, when to book flights for holiday 2024 travel.

Buying plane tickets is something of an art form. Ideally, you want to secure your spot months in advance to avoid the inevitable price spike as your travel dates get closer. But sometimes the best time to book a flight also depends on the destination and whether it's domestic or abroad. The trends are always changing, but experts say the sweet spot for booking domestic flights is 28 days, or 60 days for international flights.

Flights generally open for booking about a year ahead of time, and the airfare will change often between then and takeoff. Although you can book just a couple of weeks before the departure date in some cases, prices are likely to be astronomical. In other cases, when you want to go somewhere popular or during a big travel weekend, flights could fill up faster than normal. Our advice: Track flight prices on Google Flights or Hopper as early as possible so you can keep an eye on cost fluctuations. Read on for more advice about when to book flights from the pros.

According to Expedia's 2024 Air Travel Hacks report , you should aim to book 28 days before your domestic flight. "Doing so can save travelers up to 24 percent compared to those who wait until the last minute, from zero to six days out," Expedia travel expert Christie Hudson tells Travel + Leisure.

For domestic trips, pricing is elevated when tickets are first released, about a year before the flight. Those prices will slowly creep downward, all the way to their lowest point in the prime booking window, after which you'll likely see a huge increase in cost for last-minute travel.

Meet the Expert

Christie Hudson is a travel expert at top booking site Expedia.

You're better off booking earlier rather than later for international travel, but the Expedia report says ideally no more than four months before your desired departure date. The sweet spot is around 60 days. "This is a big change from 2022 data, which showed the cheapest fares were secured when travelers booked four to six months out." Hudson says. "2023 data revealed that people who booked that far in advance actually paid more on average." The report says the least expensive day of the week to book is Sunday and the most expensive is Friday, for both domestic and international travel.

But there is some regional variance. Going , a platform that tracks flight prices and notifies members of good deals, has found the best months to book flights to Africa, Asia, Oceania, Europe, and Latin America, for travel about 60 days out. Here's what it says.

Africa: Book in May.

Asia: Book in August or October, followed by April or September.

Oceania: Book in November, January, or July.

Europe: Book in August, October, or November.

Latin America: Book in October.

The real trick to finding good deals on international airfare is to avoid booking your travel for peak times, which include summer and major holidays (don't forget — that includes holidays in your destination, too).

Summer is traditionally one of the most popular times of the year to travel, which means it can be tough to find a good deal on airfare. Ideally, you should book flights for summer travel as soon as possible, preferably at least six months in advance.

"The best time to book for peak season is … the opposite season," says Katy Nastro, travel expert at Going. "While most of us are scrambling to focus on our winter holiday plans, we should also keep our eyes open for some great summer fares."

She notes that the booking window for peak season ranges between three and seven months for domestic flights and four to 10 months for international trips. "And if you do book something, keep that flight alert on," says Nastro. "If it drops again, depending on your ticket type, you can call to rebook and get a refund or travel credit back with the difference."

Katy Nastro is a travel expert at Going, a website that finds flight deals to more than 900 destinations around the world.

Around the winter holidays is the priciest time to travel, Nastro says. "Your best bet is to remember the Goldilocks zones: look to book between three to seven months ahead for domestic travel and four to 10 months ahead for international travel."

Hudson advises that at the very latest, your holiday travel should be booked by mid-October. "But the biggest holiday travel savings actually come from choosing the right dates," she says. "Avoiding the busiest days like the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and the Friday and Saturday before Christmas will yield major savings."

Track flights and book your holiday tickets as soon as you find a decent deal, but make sure to book a fare that will give you a credit if you cancel (generally speaking, that means don't book basic economy). That way, if prices drop between the time of booking and your travel dates, you can cancel your original ticket and use the credit to book the cheaper fare. The only downside is you'll still have some remaining credit, but you can then use it to treat yourself to a future flight. Just don't let that credit expire.

Last chance: Virgin Atlantic 40% off all routes promo — book flights from just 6,000 points

Ben Smithson

Editor's Note

Looking to travel across the pond this summer? To celebrate the airline's 40th birthday, Virgin Atlantic unveiled a new offer to help you save thousands of points on your next award redemption to the United Kingdom, but you'll need to act quickly, as this promotion ends June 24.

You can get 40% off all award redemptions in economy, premium economy and Upper Class (business class) on any flight operated by Virgin Atlantic, including all routes from the U.S. to London on any date in 2024. This is a better Promo Awards deal than the one we saw in January, which only offered 20% off redemptions for most destinations.

To take advantage of this 40% off award deal, you must book by 7:59 p.m. EDT (23:59 GMT) on June 24 for travel through Dec. 31.

As a reminder, Virgin Atlantic operates between London's Heathrow Airport (LHR) and the following U.S. airports:

  • Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL)
  • Boston Logan International Airport (BOS)
  • Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)
  • Miami International Airport (MIA)
  • New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK)
  • Las Vegas' Harry Reid International Airport (LAS)
  • Orlando International Airport (MCO)
  • San Francisco International Airport (SFO)
  • Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA)
  • Tampa International Airport (TPA)
  • Washington, D.C.'s Dulles International Airport (IAD)

travel book london

The discounts apply to flights in any direction and any cabin with award availability on any route. This offer is available for redemptions, upgrades and companion tickets.

Virgin Atlantic must operate the flight for your redemption to qualify for the promotion. Virgin Atlantic flies beyond London to various destinations in India, South Africa, the United Arab Emirates, China and Nigeria, among other locations.

Related: Video alert! TPG reviews all cabins on Virgin Atlantic's Airbus A330-900neo

Round-trip economy redemptions start from just 12,000 Virgin Atlantic Flying Club points from JFK or 18,000 points from LAX on off-peak dates. You'll see the points discount applied when booking online. So, if you want to fly to LHR for a positioning flight to start your European summer vacation, you can redeem just 6,000 points if you book a flight from JFK. This is a terrific deal.

travel book london

To see the full list of starting award redemption prices in economy, premium economy and Upper Class, check out Virgin Atlantic's website .

While 40% award redemptions is a great deal, especially as this deal covers all dates, routes and cabins, customers will incur the full fees, taxes and substantial surcharges when booking with Virgin Atlantic.

Unlike with British Airways , there is no way to reduce the carrier-imposed surcharges by redeeming more points. Even in economy, you can expect to pay hundreds of dollars extra; in business class, the total is more than $1,000 round-trip. For example, this round-trip business-class flight from JFK to LHR can cost you just 57,000 points, but you must pay more than $2,000 in taxes and fees.

travel book london

These surcharges remain the biggest frustration with the Flying Club program.

How to book Virgin Atlantic award flights

To take advantage of this great offer, you must book by 7:59 p.m. EDT. Sadly, the discount does not apply to existing bookings. You may consider canceling and rebooking if your existing flight falls within the eligibility window. However, availability is not guaranteed.

If you need to earn Virgin points for one of these awards, you can transfer points from American Express Membership Rewards , Bilt Rewards , Capital One , Chase Ultimate Rewards and Citi ThankYou Rewards . These transfers process at a 1:1 ratio and should post instantaneously to your Virgin account.

This terrific offer from Flying Club is generous given it covers all routes in all classes for the rest of 2024. Just be mindful of those pesky surcharges when booking.

This is officially the cheapest last-minute holiday destination to book in Europe

Still after a cheap summer getaway? Well here’s where you can escape to in Europe without breaking the bank

The party island of Ibiza has been found to be this summer’s cheapest last-minute holiday destination .

The experts at Which? have sifted through thousands of travel deals to uncover the bargain package holidays that could save the day for last-minute bookers – including family favourite Tenerife , party capital Ibiza, and even the dazzling Moroccan coastline.

They analysed over 3,500 package holidays from the UK’s biggest holiday companies for the first week of August – which are still available to book now.

Whilst African Morrocco came top of the list, it’s the rave capital of the Balearics Ibiza that came out as the cheapest in Europe.

If you’re looking to combine sunshiney beaches with a buzzing nightlife, Ibiza is the perfect choice. You can get away for an average cost of £1,046 per person for a 7-day all-inclusive break – but some options start at as low as £804 per person.

the gorgeous sunshiney coastline of Ibiza

Bagging the third spot is Dalaman in Turkey at £1,057 per person, and Menorca at £1,100 per person.

If these all-inclusive options are a bit out of your price range, Which? also searched for the best prices for self-catering, room-only, B&B and half board (breakfast and one main meal)

Dalaman was the best, with budget-friendly options averaging around £781. It was closely followed by Bodrum, which is also in Turkey, at £800 per person. This is perfect if you’re after scorching temperatures as it’s usually above 30C every day.

A palm tree and tower in Morocco

If you’re after a Greek escape, the lesser-known island Kalymnos averages at £840 per person for half board.

However, it’s important to remember if you’re going to be thrifty, that not going all-inclusive can often work out more expensive. This is due to additional costs such as food, drink and activities that can sometimes outweigh the deals.

Top 8 cheapest All-inclusive destinations in Europe

Ibiza: £1,046

Dalaman, Turkey: £1,057

Menorca: £1,100

Fuerteventura: £1,103

Bourgas, Bulgaria: £1,108

Costa Blanca, Spain: £1,114

Mallorca: £1,126

Tenerife: £1,189
