Find a mobile barber that will come to you : you deserve it .

A mobile barber is someone who works outside the confines of a barbershop and travels to the customer rather than having the customer travel to the barbershop.

Now the barber becomes mobile : at-home haircuts and hairstyle are not reserved to celebrities any more. Have your regular men's haircut, buzz cut, mustache trim or even a beard touch up (to conceal the grey) in the comfort of your home. Let the mobile barbershop come to you !

Traveling Barber With Scissors

What is a Barber and a Master Barber (vs a Hair Stylist) ?

Barbers cut and style the hair of their predominantly male client base. They are required to be licensed since the profession deals directly with public health. Master barber training includes all the traditional elements of barber training, including hair cutting, hair coloring, facial hair services, the use of styling tools, hygiene protocols and client relations, but also requires further specialized training in these areas.

The requirements for getting a barber license vary depending on the state, but generally include:

  • Completing a certain number of training hours: Most states require that you complete a certain number of training hours in order to be eligible for a license. The number of hours required can vary from state to state, but typically ranges from 1000 to 2000 hours.
  • Apprenticeship: Some states require a certain number of hours of apprenticeship under the supervision of a licensed barber. This can be a good way to gain hands-on experience and learn from a more experienced professional.
  • Passing a state board exam: Most states require that you pass a state board exam in order to be licensed. The exam typically covers topics such as hair cutting, styling, shaving, and sanitation.
  • Continuing education: Most states require that barbers complete a certain number of continuing education hours in order to renew their license.
  • Meeting other requirements: Depending on the state, there may be other requirements such as a background check, fingerprinting and submitting proof of age, etc.

It's important to check with your state's barbering board for specific requirements, as they can vary from state to state. It's also worth noting that some states have different level of licenses for different type of services, like hair cutting, shaving, etc"Ã"šÃ‚¦ And see if the program you are considering is accredited by the National Accrediting Commission of Career Arts and Sciences (NACCAS) or other relevant organizations.

The term "master barber" does not typically refer to a specific diploma or degree, but rather to a level of skill and experience that a barber has achieved. In some states, becoming a "master barber" might require passing a state board exam and meeting other requirements, but in many states, it is a title given to the most experienced and skilled barber working in the shop or for the individual. It's important to note that some states may have different titles for different levels of barbers, like journeyman barber and master barber, so it's best to check with your state's barbering board for specifics.

The master barber license is a valuable asset, as it generally recognizes more experienced barbers as having the ability to provide a higher level of service which, in turn, gives them the ability to command higher prices for their services.

And what are the differences with a hair stylist ?

The main difference between a barber and a hair stylist is the type of services they provide and the training they receive.

Barbers are trained to cut and style men's hair, as well as to shave and trim beards. They typically receive training in cutting and styling short, traditional men's hairstyles, as well as in using clippers, scissors, and razors. Barbers may also provide basic hair coloring and grooming services, such as beard and mustache trimming.

Hair stylists, on the other hand, are trained to cut, style, and color hair for both men and women. They typically receive training in a wider range of cutting and styling techniques, including both long and short hairstyles, and in using a variety of tools and products. Hair stylists may also provide more advanced hair coloring and chemical treatments, such as highlights, lowlights, and perms.

In addition, hair stylists usually have a broader range of services they are authorized to perform, such as nails and makeup services, skin care, and so on.

It's worth noting that in some states, the terms "barber" and "hair stylist" may be used interchangeably, and the services provided by each may overlap. So if you are wondering, just check with your state's barbering or cosmetology board for details.

What is a mobile barber ?

A mobile barber is a barber who comes to a client's location to provide hair cutting and grooming services, instead of the client going to a traditional barbershop or salon. This can include things like cutting hair in a client's home, or providing services in a mobile barbershop. Also called sometimes, traveling barbers , they can provide a convenient option for those who have difficulty leaving their home, have mobility issues, or prefer the convenience of having the service come to them.

There are two types of mobile barbers :

  • the most common, and usually least expensive, is the stylist who carries their equipment with them and provides services such as haircuts, hair coloring and hair styling inside the customer's home or place of business. (Other salon services such as massage, waxing and mani/pedis may be available as well.)
  • the other type of mobile stylist is one who uses a vehicle such as a trailer or a camper as their salon, and customers come inside to receive their services.

Find a mobile barber near you

You should find a mobile hairstylist near you anytime, because mobile hairstyling is a convenient option for many.

Some people have an extremely busy schedule and have difficulty finding the time to go to a salon or barbershop. It's simply easier for the stylist to come to them. Additionally, many people with health problems, disabilities and those recovering from illnesses or accidents may find it easier to have their stylist or barber come to them. Apart from that, nothing beats receiving services in a space that's comfortable and familiar. And what's more comfortable and familiar than one's own home ?

Another benefit of mobile hairstylists or barbers is their cost, which is typically less than the cost for traditional stylists, as they don't have to pay overhead for a large salon or for other staff members.

Mobile Barbershop

Select the right mobile barber for you or your loved ones

With very little humility, we might say "Thanks to DashStylists" ;-), but let's elaborate.

Once you've decided that a mobile hairstylist is the best option for you, your next step is finding one. Though they can be found anywhere, most are found in or near larger cities. If you live in a rural area, finding one can be a bit trickier.

Here are a few tips for finding the right barber for you:

  • Ask for recommendations: Ask friends, family, or coworkers if they know of a good barber. Personal recommendations can be very helpful in finding someone who will do a good job.
  • Research online: Look for barbershops in your area and read reviews of their services. Websites like Yelp and Google Reviews can provide valuable information about the quality of service, the atmosphere, and the prices.
  • Look for experience: A barber with more experience may be more likely to provide a high-quality service. You can ask how long the barber has been working or look for a barber who is a master barber, who have passed the state board exam.
  • Check out the shop: Before you make an appointment, it's a good idea to check out the barbershop. Look for a clean and well-maintained shop, with professional-looking barbers and a friendly atmosphere.
  • Communicate with the barber: During your first visit, explain exactly what you want, bring pictures if you have, so the barber can understand your preference. If you are not satisfied with the cut, let the barber know, so they can make adjustments for your next visit.

Remember that finding the right barber may take some time and may require trying out a few different options. But by following these tips, you should be able to find a barber who can provide you with the high-quality service you are looking for.

And mobile barber services are particularly a good fit for older adults aging at home .

Other frequent asked questions about mobile barbers :

1. how much costs a haircut in a barbershop .

A great haircut goes a long way in boosting your confidence. Whether it's in a high-end barbershop or an ordinary joint, many people want to have a good cut. Even if you aim at have a long healthy hair, it will require more than just waiting for it to grow. Regular trimming helps eliminate splitting ends and breakage thus allowing the your hair to grow healthily. The cost range is diverse with most barbershops ranging from $20-50. However, some salon in Midtown Manhattan, New York in known to charge between $80 to $200 for a regular man's shave. Obviously, this leaves you with a question on what makes the price variation? Whereas looking good is the ultimate goal, the process of attaining that is the real deal. Even if you'll definitely need barbering, a professional hairstylist ought to offer the best solution based on your head shape, complexion, type of hair among other factors. The stylist will determine if your hair needs a fade or the clippers should cut more. The price range thus comes about due to the locality, additional services not to mention the clientele. You do not expect a celebrity to have a haircut at an ordinary local salon. Class and status come with a cost. Similarly, if the stylist is mobile and bring the services to you, there will be an added cost to the convenience as well as the facilitation fee. While there are luxury mobile barbers who charge up to $200, ordinarily, a gentleman's shave only can go for $50 without extra services such as hot towel, shampooing etc. Repeat clients attract a discount. Seniors and children have different rates. Other than luxury and status, the hair type is the single determining factor on the price of a haircut.

Historically traditional, these past 20 years the barber industry has involved supported by new technologies, but the COVID pandemic has definitely rocked the industry and innovations are pouring in the barbershops .

In addition to that, mobile hair services charges are influenced by the equipment of the stylist. Some stylist have mobile van that practically brings the barbershop to you while others carry with them a few tools and devices to shave your hair.

2. How much to tip your barber ?

Tipping beauty professionals is always a subject of questions you've probably asked yourself as your appointment draws to a close, especially with a new beauty professional. We propose here a few pieces of advice to decide how to tip your hairdresser or barber.

Customarily, like any other beauty service provider, you should tip your barber, unless the service is a complete failure or the attitude of the barber was unbearable. Not tipping a barber mobile or not is a significant move.

The average tip for a barber is typically 15-20% of the cost of the service. However, it's worth noting that this can vary depending on factors such as the quality of the service and the location of the salon. Some people may choose to tip more or less based on their personal preferences and budget.

3. How much makes a barber ?

The salary of a barber can vary depending on factors such as location, experience, and demand for their services. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual salary for barbers was $32,480 in May 2020. The lowest 10% earned less than $22,880, and the highest 10% earned more than $49,720.

Mobile styling is usually more profitable since you dont have to pay for a booth or a seat or for a % fee to the salon. Even if you have to pay a commission to a marketplace, like DashStylists.com, it will cost you around 10%-20% compared to 40% to 60% on average in a beauty salon. And the expenses you have to face as a mobile hairdresser, mostly gas and car use, are very low so definitely you should see more money at the end of the day.

Financially speaking, another perk of going mobile is you dont' have to go full mobile, you can work in a salon for 5-6 hours a day, when the salon is really busy and work for yourself as a mobile hairstylist taking one or two short appointments to cut hair after your work in the salon.

And it is probably better to think of mobile styling as an additional source of revenue as for now, because the US market is not developed enough yet.

But we are working on it !

This is a Downtown gem. As a local, if you're nearby you must visit this shop to experience real authentic Miami vibes! My son got a haircut with Mercedes; the service was 10/10. I've never seen someone be so caring and professional with him. We love visiting!

Photo of Claude O.

So I had to get a haircut last minute and walked in on a Saturday. The guy that cut my hair was from Columbia and was learning English like barely basic level. The other barbers had to explain to him what I was trying to say. My cut is relatively simple. Taper the sides and low. I already knew it wouldn't be good once he started cutting backwards. Experienced barbers always ask how you comb/brush your hair first. The clippers he used seemed to be subpar as well as my hair was uneven in some places. Finally we get to the line up and there was a whole 5 minute discussion on how to do it. Once again experienced barbers know what to do. None of the barbers in there seemed to know enough bout different hair types. Also got a shave but that was a miss as well. Had small patches of hair all over. I would like to say a bad haircut is better than none at all. However, in this case I should have just saved my money.

Photo of Next Level C.

Ask for Uziel. Went there as walk-in and was greeted professionally. Was also able to get me in quick.

Photo of Mark J.

I needed a haircut cut while visiting in Miami, I called and they take walk-in's, I had a little bit of a wait but that's OK as they were quite. The barber I had did a good job and when we visit the kids here again I will definitely go back if I need a cut.

Photo of Waheed B.

Great haircut. Good length with minimal direction given. A little worried because my barber didn't seem comfortable speaking English but who cares when he is an expert at the hair arts. Walk ins are fine but I called ahead.

Entrance

After moving downtown I tried out four other places to get my hair cut and Tavel has been my favorite. I've been pleased with my haircut every time. Very professional. Thankfully, the guys cutting hair do not have the bad habits I've experienced at other places that think it's OK to stop cutting your hair to talk and text on their phones. Once that happens I never go back to the place. When you are in the chair at Tavel they focus on you! I did have an issue last month. They have a $20 special on Wednesdays - I made a point of going in on a Wednesday in order to save a few bucks. After I got home I noticed on the receipt that they charged their standard $25 price. Five dollars is not going to break me but I felt burned, like a Bait and Switch happened. That left a bad taste in my mouth like I have to keep an eye on them. If it happens again I'll definitely update this review. And never go back to them.

Photo of James A.

Had to go to another place to fix my hair!!! I have been growing my hair out for the past two months to get New modeling gig.. They miss my hairline up completely I had to start over and I lost the job.. I would not recommend going to this place if it was the last barbershop in the city...

travel barber shop

The old Barbershop Scam, he post a big sign out front of his shop that says $20 haircuts, only to tell you AFTER your haircut, that its only for Tuesdays!? Nowhere on the sign is that mentioned! Go scam someone else, you will lose more customers, including myself when you try and rip them off!

Photo of Jim M.

Horrible. One of the worst haircuts I've ever gotten - rushed, uneven, and bad attitude. Not worth it - go to the hundred other barbers in the area.

Photo of Maryorie G.

My boyfriend moved here a year ago. He went to 4 different barber shops in the downtown area and he was not happy with any of them. When I told him about Tavel Barber Shop he came to check it out. The price was amazing for a haircut. My boyfriend absolutely loved his haircut. He's had his haircut by every single barber in Tavel Barber Shop and they all have done an amazing job. It's rare that you find a place that EVERY single barber does an amazing job, but here at Tavel they are all experienced. I love it when he gets his haircut because every time I see him after his haircut he looks amazing. If anyone is looking for a barbershop in the local Downtown area I HIGHLY recommend Tavel Barber Shop. It's been a year and my boyfriend still continues to go there and he will NOT go anywhere else.

Traveling Barber 101: Everything You Need to Know

spa-massage.jpg

Do you dream of being your own boss? Are you looking for a way to work from almost anywhere in the world? Did the mobile barber idea ever come across your mind? As a freelance barber, the world is your oyster. You can take your trade on the go and choose where you want to have your base. You’ll get the flexibility of setting your own hours and the possibility of turning your freelancing into a business.

Sounds good, right? Whether you’re a hairdressing student or a barber working in a salon, going freelance is easier than you think. We’re taking you through everything that you need to know to become a mobile or traveling barber. This guide covers licenses that you may need, along with the tools you’ll need to have in your traveling box of tricks.

What is a traveling barber?

Traveling Barber Giving Haircut

A traveling barber is exactly what it says on the tin. They’re a barber who will travel – near or far – to see their clients. Some barbers will visit their clients at home for regular trims and styling. For VIP clients and special occasions, a traveling barber will meet their clients at a hotel or venue. If you’re lucky, you might become a traveling barber who goes around the country ( or the world) to work with their clients.

Traveling barbers will promote their services for traditional cut and style appointments, along with occasion styling. As a traveling barber, you can focus on offering your services for weddings, evening events, and high-end client. When you’re a freelancer, you can tailor your work to meet the areas you want to explore in your career.

The benefits of being a freelance barber

Being a freelance barber comes with dozens of advantages that you wouldn’t get if you were working in a salon, either for yourself or another salon.

Barber Gives In-Home Haircut

The one benefit that attracts most barbers to the freelance lifestyle is the flexibility. You don’t have to work a set number of hours a day or abide by the opening hours of a salon. You can choose which days you want to work and schedule your working life around your personal life. Going freelance can be the best option for those with caring responsibilities or who are studying alongside working.

Freelance barbers build a close relationship with their clients, more so than what you’ll find in most salons. Unlike a salon, freelance barbers have a one-on-one experience with their clients and do everything with them from start to finish. The flexibility of being a freelance barber means that you can work with clients from anywhere – whether they’re at home or a 5-star hotel.

If you’ve caught the wanderlust bug, becoming a freelance barber can give you endless travel opportunities. With your diverse client base, you can take your kit on the go, whether it’s heading to another city or jumping on a plane.

The main difference between opening a salon and going freelance is that you have lower overheads. You won’t need to employ other staff, pay rent, or furnish a salon. While you’ll be paying for travel and your kit, it often works out more affordable to work freelance as a traveling barber.

With the help of this traveling barber guide, you’ll know what to expect when you start your journey towards becoming a freelance barber. Start the process by getting the license required by your state and build your kit and client list to help you scale your business. Becoming a traveling barber is more attainable than you might think.

How to become a traveling barber

Becoming a freelance barber is easier than you think. Our step-by-step guide breaks down everything that you’ll need to do to kickstart your new career. Before you start your journey, you’ll need to research what the specific requirements are for your state.

Licensing for your state

The requirements will change from state to state, with some of them requiring a specific diploma and license for you to operate as a freelance barber. You’ll want to ensure that the qualifications you need to meet the requirements that are set for the license you’ll need for your state.

Barber License

There are three popular types of licenses – barbering, cosmetology, and hairstyling. Each license allows you to deal with hair within different scopes. You’ll typically need to study for a certified diploma, take practical training, and complete a written exam. Most states will require you to renew your license annually.

The licenses and diplomas are usually overseen by the Board of Barbering and Cosmetology for your state.

Register as self-employed

Before you start taking on clients, you’ll want to register as self-employed. It’s best to do this right away to get ahead of your paperwork and ensure that you’re fully compliant with taxes.

Consider getting professional insurance

Some traveling barbers like the peace of mind of having professional insurance. It’ll protect you against any incidents, but you’ll want to do your research to decide which one is right for you and if it’s a worthwhile investment into your freelance work.

Marketing your traveling barber services

When you’re starting your career as a freelance barber, you want to leverage social media to help you build a profile. Decide the areas you want to offer your services to and work on using social media to target potential customers in this region. Utilize every tool from TikTok to Instagram and

Build your traveling barber kit

One disadvantage of working as a freelance barber is that you’ll be relying solely on yourself for your equipment. We’ll be rounding up all the tools you’ll need in a checklist below.

The tools you need in your freelancing kit

When you’re building your freelance kit, you’ll need to have a:

Styling tools:

  • Clippers (either cordless or corded)
  • Razor blades and holders
  • Shampoo and conditioners
  • Styling products
  • Shaving gel

Combs and brushes:

  • Clipper combs

  • Wide-tooth comb

Very clean, open, and relaxing atmosphere while you wait. Oscar Vega does my cuts and my hairs weird. I got callicks( one on the side) and thick coarse hair. My man is skilled with a skin fade, even with my uneven hair he gets me straight every time.

Victor Heredia

Oscar is simply the best barber I’ve had in Florida and I’ve moved all over the state. Dude is super professional, gentle and extremely motivational, I only let him touch my hair. Really love getting the freshest cut by the freshest barber.

Bryson Bova

Oscar and the rest of the guys are truly awesome, nice and welcoming. It’s a chill environment and I look forward to my appointments. Something about sitting in a barber shop and meeting people and just talking about any topic that comes up makes me smile. This is the only place I will be getting my haircut for as long as they’re in business. They have my full support and I’ll recommend the for anyone who needs a cut, kids, teenagers or adults or anyone.

Getting a Haircut While Traveling: A Men’s Guide

While traveling long term, you’ll find yourself in need of a haircut every month or so. When your hair starts looking a little scraggly, you have two options: You can visit a barbershop or you can cut your own hair. In this guide, I’ll share some tips to help you get a decent, consistent, and affordable haircut while traveling anywhere in the world.

In the past, I would go to a barber shop in every country. That got kind of old and expensive. For the past 10 years, I’ve been cutting my own hair while traveling. I travel with a small battery-powered pair of clippers. In this guide, I’ll share my experience.

To read about cutting your own hair while traveling, click here to skip to the second half of this article.

Getting a Haircut While Traveling

Getting a haircut in a foreign country can be a nerve-wracking experience. You may not be able to communicate with your barber because of a language barrier. Explaining exactly what you want can be a daunting task. Styles and hair types also vary by region. This makes the barber’s job a bit more difficult. The following tips will make the process just a bit easier and less stressful.

1. Do your Research Before Choosing a Barber Abroad

Go online and search for “barber shops near me.” Even if you don’t speak the local language, Google Translate is good enough to give you plenty of information. Read through the reviews. Take note of the highly reviewed shops and eliminate the ones with poor reviews.

Check the pricing. Look through any customer photos to check for the quality of haircuts that they offer. Look for the name of specific barbers who gets good reviews. Take note of the name so you can ask for them when you go into the shop.

Of course, this is only helpful if you’re in a city. If you’re in a rural area or small town, chances are, they only have one barber shop.

2. Take Some Pictures of Your Haircut to Show to Your Barber

Before your trip, you’ll probably want to get a haircut at your regular barbershop. While the haircut is fresh, take a few photos on your phone. You at least want a photo of the front, back, and side.

Show these photos to your barber abroad. This way, he’ll know exactly what you want, even if you don’t share a common language. Whether or not he knows how to do it, who knows?

If you’re already on the road and don’t have any photos of a haircut, just look online for a style similar to what you want. Save the photo to your phone so you can show it to the barber.

3. Know How to Describe Your Haircut

Most men’s haircuts involve using clippers. You should know the length that you like on the top and sides. Most hair clippers use a standard set of numbers to describe the length. For example:

  • 0 or no guard – 1/16” or 1.5 mm
  • 1 – 1/8” or 3 mm
  • 2 – 1-4” or 6 mm
  • 3 – 3/8” or 10 mm
  • 4 – 1/2” or 13 mm
  • 5 – 5/8” or 16 mm
  • 6 – 3/4” or 19 mm
  • 7 – 7/8” or 22 mm
  • 8 – 1” or 25 mm

Once you know the length that you like, you can use the numbers to describe to your barber exactly how long you want your hair. To find these numbers, simply ask your regular barber. They’ll tell you what length they usually use. If you don’t know the lengths, that’s okay too. Many barbers can estimate using a photo.

For more info on hair clipper lengths as well as some photo examples, check out this article from Give it a Cut.

You may also want to know a bit of hairstyle terminology so you can accurately describe the exact style that you want. Check out this guide from Men’s Hairstyles Today to help you identify the name of your haircut. Even if your barber doesn’t speak English, he probably knows the English names of popular haircuts.

4. Don’t Tell your Barber that you’re just Traveling Through

Barbers build their business by developing a loyal following of customers who regularly return for a haircut. They know you’ll keep coming back if they give you a great haircut and pleasant service.

If the barber knows that you’re never coming back from the start, they have no reason to put in the extra effort. They may even rush through to get to one of their loyal clients.

Basically, I’m saying to lie to the barber if they ask you what you’re doing in their country. Tell them you just moved into town and you needed to find a new regular barber. This little lie doesn’t do any harm and may help you get a better haircut while traveling.

5. Plan Ahead for Your Haircut While Traveling

While you can find someone to cut your hair pretty much anywhere on earth, you’ll probably have better results in larger cities. If you’re going to be spending the next month in a rural area or small town, get your hair cut in the city first. Cities are better for finding a barber for the following reasons:

  • Cities offer more options in terms of barbers and shops- You’ll have more barbers to choose from.
  • You’re more likely to find an English speaking barber in a city- City people are more likely to speak a foreign language.
  • City barbers are more likely to know the modern styles- You don’t want to end up with an outdated haircut unless that’s your style.

Also, consider the cost of haircuts where you’re traveling. If you’re traveling in an expensive region, wait until you’re somewhere cheaper. For example, a budget haircut in Scandinavia could cost $30-$40. If your next destination is in Eastern Europe, you should probably wait. A haircut will cost less than a quarter of that.

6. Talk to The Barber Before Your Haircut

Try to gauge whether or not they understand exactly what type of haircut you want before they touch your hair. If you absolutely can’t understand each other, you may be better off looking for another barbershop.

The same is true if the barber just seems unpleasant or in a hurry. If you sense that they just don’t care, it’s better to walk and take your business elsewhere. Another barber would be happy for your business.

7. Pay Attention During the Haircut

Even after showing the barber your pictures and explaining exactly what you want, you still need to stay alert during the haircut. Sometimes your instructions go in one ear and out the other. Some barbers think they know better than you and do whatever they want. Sometimes there is a misunderstanding.

Whatever the case, you must keep an eye on the length of the guard that they use and the amount of hair falling off of your head. If something doesn’t look or feel right, stop them and explain again what you want. Maybe you’re not too late.

8. Consider Cutting Your Hair Shorter While Traveling

Wearing your hair short while traveling has a number of benefits including:

  • Haircuts last longer- Maybe you can go 6 weeks between haircuts instead of 4. You’ll save a bit of money and hassle this way.
  • Short haircuts are easier for the barber- The likelihood of a mistake is lower.
  • Short haircuts are cooler- While traveling, you’re more active. You’re probably also in a hot climate. You can keep cool by wearing your hair shorter. For more hot weather tips, check out my summer travel guide.
  • Short haircuts cost less- Some barbershops charge more to cut long hair. You can save some money by keeping your hair short.

9. Get a Cheap Haircut While Traveling

If you just want a buzz cut or something that the barber can’t screw up, just go ahead and look for the cheapest possible shop.

In the developed world, go to a chain barbershop. They generally have low prices. Sometimes you can even find a coupon or discount. Another option is to look for a barbershop in a lower-class part of town. They may offer lower cost haircuts as their clientele has lower income.

In the developing world, look for a small roadside shop. In Africa, Latin America, and much of Asia, you can find people cutting hair in open air shops on the street. Sometimes you can get a haircut for just a couple of bucks.

roadside barbershop

10. Enjoy the Barber Shop Experience

Visiting a barbershop abroad is a bit of a cultural experience. Getting your hair cut gives you an excellent opportunity to talk to the locals and get some culture. Chat up the guys waiting around as well. Chances are, they’d be happy to talk. Try to enjoy your foreign barbershop experience.

If you’re really adventurous, you could even get a shave. An old school barber with a straight razor can give you the closest shave you’ve ever had. This is an experience in and of itself.

11. Go Extreme: Choose a New Haircut While Traveling

If, after reading this, you really don’t want to get a haircut while traveling abroad, you have two options:

  • Let your hair grow- Nobody really cares how you look while you’re traveling. Maybe you’ll like the style. Besides, hair doesn’t grow that fast.
  • Shave your head- You’re going to go bald one day anyway. Just shave it all off. Travel offers a great opportunity to try the bald look out without shocking your friends and family with the new look.

Final Thoughts on Getting a Haircut While Traveling

Getting your hair cut abroad is kind of unnerving at first. When you walk into an unfamiliar barber shop with a barber who you can hardly communicate with, you just never know how you’ll look when you walk out. You might pay $2 for the best haircut of your life from a barber working on a street corner in Mumbai. You might end up with a buzz cut against your will at a high-end shop in Mexico City. While you’re traveling, it doesn’t really matter all that much. It grows out in a month and you get to go through the whole experience again.

How to Cut Your own Hair While Traveling Abroad

I’ll admit, I got sick of going through the hassle of finding a barber and struggling to explain how I wanted my hair cut while traveling. These days, I always cut my own hair. Even when I’m at home. Benefits of cutting your own hair include:

  • You save money- The average haircut costs $5-$15 depending on where you’re traveling. You also save money on transportation to and from the barbershop. For more money saving travel tips, check out my guide to ultra-low budget travel on $10 per day
  • It’s faster- I can cut my hair in about 20 minutes. When you factor in the time it takes to find a barbershop, travel there, then get a haircut, you’ll have spent over an hour.
  • It’s self-sufficient- You don’t have to rely on another person to maintain your hair.
  • You get to learn a new skill- If you like the way your hair looks when you cut it, you can continue cutting yourself at home.
  • No more bad haircuts- After you get the hang of cutting your own hair, it looks exactly the same every time. When visiting a barber abroad, it’s always a gamble.

What do I Need to Pack to Cut My Own Hair While Traveling?

The only drawback I can think of to cutting your own hair while traveling is the fact that you need to pack a bit of extra gear which takes up space in your pack. Here’s what you’ll need:

Hair Clippers

When selecting a pair of clippers for travel, look for the following features:

  • Comparable with 110-240v power- So you can use them anywhere in the world, no matter the power standard. Alternatively, you can buy a pair that runs on AA batteries. I made the mistake of taking a 110v only pair of corded clippers on my first trip. I just didn’t think to check the comparability before I left home. I fried them the first time I tried to cut my hair. I ended up going to a barbershop instead for the remainder of the trip.
  • Powerful enough to cut hair- Some clippers are designed only for facial and body hair. Head hair is usually longer and thicker and can clog up some low powered clippers. Make sure the clippers you choose are designed for haircuts.
  • Equipped with enough length settings- This depends on your hairstyle. Make sure your clippers allow you to cut your to your desired length. Most max out around 1 inch (2.54 cm).
  • Durable- This is a piece of gear that you shouldn’t cheap out on. Basically, you get what you pay for. You don’t want your cheap clippers failing in the middle of a haircut. Even an expensive pair of hair clippers will pay for itself after 3-4 haircuts.
  • Waterproof- This is a nice feature to have but not required. It makes cleanup much easier. You can simply wash your clippers off after a haircut. You can even cut your hair in the shower.

Travel Hair Clippers Recommendations

Wahl color pro cordless rechargeable hair clippers.

These is the clippers that I pack. This kit comes with everything you need to cut your own hair while traveling including guards, scissors, oil, and a carrying case. I use them for cutting my hair, cutting my beard, and grooming body hair

Personally, I’m a big fan of the Wahl brand in general. I’ve been using their clippers since I started cutting my own hair 15 years ago and haven’t had any issues with their products.  They’re well made.

Additional Gear That You May Need to Cut Your Own Hair While Traveling

  • Small handheld mirror- So you can see the back and sides of your head while you’re cutting your hair. I have a small round bathroom mirror that’s about 5 inches in diameter.
  • Hair guards- These determine the length that gets cut off. Most clippers include the guards.
  • Scissors- If you have hair longer than about 1 inch (2.54 cm) on the top of your head, you might need to trim it with scissors rather than clippers. Remember, these may not be carry-on acceptable in some countries. Consider buying a pair at your destination if that’s the case.
  • Oil- Some clippers require that you oil the blade after a few haircuts. This depends on the model that you get. Most clippers include a small bottle of oil when you buy them.
  • A carrying case- After a few haircuts, your clippers get hair and oil in them. You don’t want to get this on your clothes or other travel gear. A case keeps everything clean. You could also just use a plastic bag.
  • A comb- This can help you move hair out of the way that you don’t want to cut if you have long hair. Also good for styling once you’re done.
  • A razor- For cleaning up the back of your neck and hairline. Also for shaving.

Scissors

Where Can I Cut My Hair While Traveling?

Finding a suitable place to cut your hair while traveling can be a challenge. Look for a place that is:

  • Private- Personally, I don’t want an audience while I cut my hair. They could distract me and cause a mistake. This means shared bathrooms are out.
  • Well-lit- You need to be able to see what you’re doing and spot any areas that you missed. You don’t want to leave one long strand on the back of your head.
  • Has a mirror- You need a wall mounted mirror in addition to your handheld mirror so you can see all sides of your head.
  • Easy to clean up- You’ll get hair everywhere. Look for an area with hard floors so you can easily sweep the hair up with your hand after you’re done. You don’t want to leave a disgusting mess of your hair everywhere for a housekeeper to clean up. This means carpeted rooms are out.

Private bathrooms are the ideal place to cut your hair while traveling. Hotel rooms also work well. If you’re a backpacker traveling from hostel to hostel, you may have to time your haircuts. If you happen to choose a hostel with nice private bathrooms, take advantage of that and give yourself a haircut. You never know when you’ll have another opportunity.

How to Cut your Own Hair While Traveling

Cutting hair is a skill. It can take a bit of practice to learn how to give yourself a decent haircut. The difficulty depends on your hairstyle and hair type. Some styles are harder than others to maintain. A few tips for those just getting started cutting their own hair include:

  • Have all of your tools ready- Before starting, make sure your clippers are charged and oiled. Make sure you have your mirrors, comb, guards, scissors, and all other gear handy.
  • Start with a longer guard- You can always go over it again to cut it shorter. If you go too short, you’ll have to wait for it to grow out.
  • Start at the bottom and work your way up- You typically want your hair shorter toward the bottom of your head.
  • Take it slow- There’s no rush. If it takes you an hour to give yourself a haircut, no big deal.
  • Ask for help- If you’re traveling with a friend or partner, ask them to cut the parts that you can’t see.
  • Don’t worry if you screw up- Worst case scenario, you shave it off and rock a buzz cut for a few weeks. Hair grows back surprisingly fast.

How to Cut Facial Hair While Traveling

Many guys decide to grow beards while traveling. Maintaining the clean-shaven look just takes too much effort.

If you wear a beard or decide to grow one while on your trip, you’ll need to trim it sooner or later. You don’t want to get looking too rough. If you let your beard grow to a point where you start looking homeless, people just don’t treat you the same. It can be problematic in some regions.

Luckily, traveling with a hair clippers makes maintaining facial hair pretty easy. Simply choose your desired length guard and buzz it just like you would your head.

I buzz mine down to a quarter of an inch or so every month or two. I usually trim the hair on my temples and cheeks a bit shorter as it gets a bit unruly when it grows too long.

A Note About Trimming Body Hair While Traveling

Another benefit of traveling with a pair of hair clippers is that you can use them to maintain your body hair.

I won’t go into too much detail here but I’m a pretty hairy guy. Generally, I embrace the hair but I do make one exception. If I want to wear sleeveless shirts, I have to shave my shoulders or else I just look weird. My hair clippers make that job much faster and easier.

Final Thoughts

Traveling gives you the perfect opportunity to give cutting your own hair a try. If you screw up, you don’t have to face your friends and family with a shockingly short cut. It also saves you a decent amount of money and stress during your trip. I highly recommend you give it a try.

Cutting your own hair is a bit intimidating the first time or two. You’ll probably make a mistake. The good news is that it’ll grow back in a few weeks like nothing ever happened.

At this point, I’ve been cutting my own hair for many years. Now, I just shave it as short as my clippers allow. Since my hair started thinning, I just began buzzing it all off every couple of weeks. At this point, paying a barber to shave my head for me would just be a waste of money.

I like how you mentioned telling barbers you just moved to the city. I'm going to be visiting California next week and I need to get a good haircut since my hair is getting long. It's probably a good idea to find a barber that I can trust while I'm traveling.

Wet My Beard

Hydration is key when loosening your beard, especially when picking it out. Never try to pick out your beard when its dry. Doing so will result in increase shedding and the creation of patches in your beard.

Growth Oil

History of Tyumen

Foundation of tyumen.

In the 13th-16th centuries, on the banks of the Tyumenka River, there was the capital of the Tyumen Khanate - Chingi-Tura. The construction of the Russian fortified settlement of Tyumen began near the remains of Chingi-Tura in the summer of 1586, during the conquest of Siberia by the Russians.

In the Russian chronicles of the 16th century, the Tyumen Khanate was called “Great Tyumen”. “Tumen” (“tyumyan”) in Turkic languages means “lower reaches of the river”, “lowland”. The same word also means a military unit 10 thousand people strong.

Tyumen was founded as an outpost for the conquest and development of Siberia and the Far East on the old caravan road from Central Asia to the Volga region. Waterways connected Tyumen with the lands of the Far North and East. The original population of Tyumen, as a frontier town, consisted of boyars (Russian nobility), streltsy (Russian firearm infantry), and Cossacks. In 1616, the Trinity Monastery was founded in Tyumen by the monk Nifont.

In the first years after its foundation, Tyumen was subjected to attacks by Tatars and Kalmyks. Over time, with the disappearance of the military threat, crafts became the primary occupation of the townspeople (blacksmithing, bell-making, soap-making, and tanning).

More Historical Facts…

Tyumen in the 17th-19th centuries

One century after its foundation, about 2 thousand people lived in Tyumen. In 1695, a fire broke out, as a result of which the wooden town burned down. After that, stone construction began in Tyumen. Of the stone structures of that time, the complex of buildings of the Trinity Monastery has been preserved.

At the beginning of the 18th century, Tyumen was a major transit point for trade; trade routes from China and all of Siberia to the center of Russia passed through the town. Tyumen was famous for the production of furniture and other wood products. In 1763, 6,593 people lived here, of whom 317 were artisans.

In the 19th century, simultaneously with the decline of Tobolsk, rapid growth began in Tyumen. In 1836, the first steamer in Siberia was launched in Tyumen. It became one of the largest river shipbuilding bases in the Russian Empire. In 1885, the Yekaterinburg-Tyumen railway was put into operation. At the end of the century, the cargo turnover of the Tyumen port reached 230 thousand tons per year, and the port itself was called “the gateway to Siberia”.

By the beginning of the 20th century, the number of residents of Tyumen reached 30 thousand and exceeded the population of Tobolsk. In Tyumen, there were 117 factories, including 3 shipyards, 2 steam mills, 70 tanneries, and other enterprises. In 1913, the Tyumen-Omsk railway connected the city with the Trans-Siberian Railway.

Tyumen in the 20th century and beyond

From 1923 to 1934, Tyumen was the center of the Tyumen District within Ural Oblast. On January 17, 1934, this huge region was divided into three oblasts - Sverdlovsk Oblast with the center in Sverdlovsk (Yekaterinburg), Chelyabinsk Oblast with the center in Chelyabinsk, and Ob-Irtysh Oblast with the center in Tyumen. From December 7, 1935 to August 14, 1944, Tyumen was part of Omsk Oblast. In 1939, the population of Tyumen was 79,205 people.

During the Second World War, the industrial potential of Tyumen increased significantly due to the enterprises evacuated from the European part of the USSR. In total, 22 evacuated enterprises were operating in the city, producing armored boats, mortars, motorcycles, electrical equipment for tanks, shells, mines, short fur coats, felt boots, and food. About 20 thousand residents of Tyumen fought at the front.

On August 14, 1944, Tyumen Oblast was formed - the largest region in the country in terms of area. The distance from the southernmost point of the region to the northernmost point was 2,100 km, and from west to east - 1,400 km. Tyumen became the administrative center of this new region.

In the 1960s, large deposits of oil and natural gas were discovered in the north of the Tyumen region, which became a new page in the history of Tyumen. In 1966, the construction of the Tyumen - Tobolsk - Surgut - Nizhnevartovsk railway began. A lot of enterprises of the city began to work for the oil and natural gas extraction industry.

Tyumen became the starting point and transshipment point for the delivery of goods to the North. New specialized enterprises, design institutes, and higher educational institutions were opened in the city. From 1959 to 1979, the population of Tyumen doubled - from 150 to 359 thousand people.

Tyumen Oblast became the country’s main oil and natural gas energy base. By the end of the 1980s, about 400 million tons of oil and 574 billion cubic meters of natural gas were annually produced here. In 1989, the population of Tyumen was 476,869 people.

In the 2010s, Tyumen was significantly transformed: new micro-districts, roads, bridges were built, streets were expanded. In 2015, the 700 thousandth inhabitant of the city was born. In 2020, the population of Tyumen exceeded 800 thousand people. In today’s Russia Tyumen is one of the fastest growing cities.

Tyumen - Features

Tyumen is located in the south of Western Siberia, in the Asian part of Russia, on both banks of the Tura, the left tributary of the Tobol River. Tyumen is a large industrial city, the oil and natural gas capital of Russia, as the administrative center of the largest oil and natural gas producing region. The City Day of Tyumen is celebrated on the last Saturday of July.

The climate in Tyumen is transitional from moderately continental to sharply continental. The average temperature in January is minus 15 degrees Celsius, in July - plus 18.8 degrees Celsius. The warm period lasts only 3-4 months here. The longest seasons are autumn and spring. The weather in the city can change quickly, in the morning it is sunny and warm, and in the evening it is snowy and frosty.

Today’s coat of arms of Tyumen is generally very similar to the historical coat of arms approved in 1785. The image of a wooden river boat, according to the historical description, means that “from this town begins sailing along the rivers of all Siberia.”

The Trans-Siberian Railway “Moscow - Vladivostok” passes through Tyumen. At present, it is the only transcontinental railway that completely passes through the territory of Russia. It is adjoined by the Tyumen - Novy Urengoy railway line, which serves the transportation of the northern regions. The main feature of the Tyumen transport hub is that it is the only point of connection to the all-Russian transport network of the main transport communications of the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug - Yugra and the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug.

The main air gateway to Tyumen is the international airport “Roshchino” named after D. I. Mendeleev. Located about 13 km west of Tyumen, this airport offers regular flights to such cities as Kaliningrad, Krasnodar, Moscow, Nizhnevartovsk, Novy Urengoy, Perm, Rostov-on-Don, Salekhard, St. Petersburg, Sochi, Surgut, Ufa, Khanty-Mansiysk, and a number of others.

Oil and natural gas of the Tyumen region contributed to the rapid growth of scientific organizations in the city. In total, several dozen research and design institutes are located here. Fundamental science is represented by the Institute of the Earth’s Cryosphere and the Institute for the Problems of the Development of the North. Applied science is focused on the needs of the oil and natural gas industry. Thousands of students study in 15 higher education institutions.

The beautiful wooden architecture of Tyumen should be noted separately. The unique carved decoration of the Tyumen buildings of the second half of the 19th - early 20th centuries uses the traditions of Russian decorative art, folk motives, as well as creatively reworked artistic techniques of the Renaissance, Baroque, Classicism, and partly Art Nouveau. Often, styles are combined, complemented by local motifs, forming a unique look of wooden architecture, characteristic only of Tyumen.

There are 17 federal cultural heritage sites in Tyumen. Among the specially protected natural areas in the city are the Botanical collection of the biological faculty of Tyumen State University (3 hectares), as well as the regional natural monuments Forest Park named after Yu.A. Gagarin (105 hectares) and the Zatyumensky Forest Park (77 hectares). In the vicinity of Tyumen there are about five hot (37-50 degrees Celsius) geothermal springs.

Interesting facts from the history of Tyumen during World War II

During the war, the body of V. I. Lenin was evacuated from Moscow to Tyumen; the functions of the mausoleum were temporarily performed by the building of the current Tyumen State Agricultural Academy.

In 1942, a single copy of a winged tank was built in Tyumen. Developed by aircraft designer Antonov from 1941 to 1943, it was a T-60 tank loaded on a glider (“Wings of a Tank”).

In February 1944, for two weeks, the Tyumen militia were catching cats in the city to send them to the Hermitage (Leningrad), where during the blockade numerous rodents bred, posing a threat to works of art. 238 cats were sent to the northern capital of Russia and gave rise to a new population of Leningrad cats.

Main Attractions of Tyumen

Embankment of the Tura River - one of the main walking areas of Tyumen. It is especially pleasant to walk here in the summer heat. The length of the embankment is 4 km. It runs along the right bank of the Tura River in the central part of the city. The four levels of the embankment have a total height of 24 meters. City holidays, festivals, concerts, etc. are held here.

At night, the Tyumen embankment looks especially beautiful, thanks to the illumination of the Lovers’ Bridge (a cable-stayed pedestrian bridge, where newlyweds come after the solemn registration of marriage). There are cafes and restaurants within walking distance from the embankment. The Tura River is navigable, so you can look at the Tyumen embankment from the water during a boat trip.

Tsvetnoy Boulevard - a pedestrian street 800 meters long, passing through the center of Tyumen between Ordzhonikidze and Pervomayskaya streets. It is a very popular place for recreation and walking among locals and tourists. In summer, city celebrations, concerts, and festivals take place here, in winter they organize an ice town with slides, ice sculptures, and bright lighting. Along the street there are cafes, shopping centers, a movie theater, a sports complex, and a circus. On one of the squares there is the fountain “Four Seasons” with a picturesque stained glass dome.

There are a lot of sculptures on the boulevard, the characters most beloved by the locals - clowns Nikulin, Karandash, and Oleg Popov - can be found near the Tyumen circus. The name “Tsvetnoy” was coined by analogy with Tsvetnoy Boulevard in Moscow, because a circus is also located on it. In the amusement park, you can enjoy a beautiful view of Tyumen from the Ferris wheel.

Siberian Cats Square - a unique place of its kind, often included in the lists of the most original sights of Tyumen. In 2008, on this then unnamed alley, 12 cast-iron gilded figures of cats were installed, sitting in different poses on stone pedestals.

This was done in memory of the fact that during the Second World War, after the blockade of Leningrad was broken, about 5 thousand cats were sent to the city from different places of the country to catch numerous rats. By that time, there were no cats in Leningrad, they were all eaten. 238 cats were taken from Tyumen to the northern capital specifically to protect the priceless storage facilities of the Hermitage and other Leningrad palaces and museums. Pervomayskaya Street, 11.

Tyumen Regional Museum of Fine Arts - one of the best art museums beyond the Urals. The exposition includes a unique collection of Russian portrait painting of the 18th - early 20th centuries, paintings created by Western European artists of the 17th-19th centuries, as well as art works by Soviet and contemporary artists and sculptors. Decorative and applied art is represented by porcelain from the Imperial Factory, a collection of Tobolsk carved bones, clay toys, and much more. Sovetskaya Street, 63.

Museum of Local Lore “The City Duma” - a museum located in the very center of the city, not far from the embankment and the Lovers’ Bridge, in a building that is an architectural monument (the first civil stone building in Tyumen, built in 1828-1834). Previously, the City Duma and the Tyumen archive were located here. Today, here you can see ethnographic, archaeological, natural science collections, as well as objects of handicrafts and decorative and applied arts. Lenina Street, 2.

Holy Trinity Monastery - a majestic religious monument with gilded domes and laconic white facades located on the bank of the Tura River, an architectural monument of federal significance. This is one of the oldest monasteries in Siberia, founded in 1616.

Today, it is one of the most famous and popular architectural religious complexes throughout Siberia. It is advisable for tourists to dress according to the weather, comfortable and not provocative, in accordance with the rules of the Russian Orthodox Church (women must have a skirt, as well as a scarf covering their heads). Kommunisticheskaya Street, 10.

Church of the Exaltation of the Cross (1774-1791) - one of the most famous architectural landmarks of Tyumen, built in the Baroque style. Lunacharsky Street, 1.

Church of the Savior (1796-1819) - one of the oldest and most expressive churches in Tyumen, an architectural monument of federal significance. This building combines in its architecture the Siberian Baroque of the late 18th century and the Russian style of the early 20th century. Chelyuskintsev Street, 44.

Znamensky Cathedral (1786-1801) - the main church in Tyumen built in the Siberian Baroque style. This majestic, snow-white building with an abundance of blue and gilded details looks incredibly sophisticated. Semakova Street, 13.

Gilevskaya Grove - a picturesque forest park with almost 80 hectares of dense forest, a river, and a lake, one of the most favorite places for recreation and walks in Tyumen. On the territory there are scooter and bicycle rental, asphalt paths for jogging and cycling, gazebos for picnic and barbecue, etc. Gilevskaya Roshcha, 1

Hot springs “Verkhniy Bor” - a recreation center located about 15 km from Tyumen. Here you can swim in pools both in summer and in winter, when it is minus 30 degrees Celsius outside. The water temperature reaches plus 40 degrees Celsius. Bathing in healing hot waters has a positive effect on human health. A visit to “Verkhny Bor” is recommended for people with respiratory and cardiovascular diseases.

Monument to Grigory Rasputin - an art object located in the heart of Tyumen, in Aptekarskiy Garden, near the city Perinatal Center. Grigory Rasputin (1869-1916) is a highly controversial personality in Russian history known for his friendship with the family of the last Russian emperor Nicholas II. They believed that he had the talents of perspicacity and healing. This gave Rasputin the opportunity to exert a great influence on the administration of the Russian Empire in the last years of its existence.

This monument was erected here for a reason. In the summer of 1914, Rasputin was taken to a hospital located near the garden with a knife wound to the abdominal cavity. He was brought from afar, from his native village of Pokrovskoye. Later, for some time, Rasputin worked here as a medical orderly.

The sculpture is a full-length image of Rasputin - a tall man with a thick beard. He is dressed in the so-called “Siberian coat” - a traditional Russian caftan. The left hand rests on a Viennese chair - an exact copy of the original chair from the Rasputin Museum located in the village of Pokrovskoye. There are city legends about this monument. It is said that men, by sitting down on this chair, can be cured of their illnesses, as well as get a career progression. Daudel’naya Street, 7.

Grigory Rasputin Museum . This museum is located in the village of Pokrovskoye (Sovetskaya Street, 79), about 80 km from Tyumen, if you drive in the direction of Tobolsk. A lot of secrets, mysteries, and hoaxes are associated with the name of Rasputin. Therefore, visiting this museum will be interesting for those who are interested in Russian history.

The museum was created thanks to the enthusiasm of fellow villagers of Rasputin in 1990. They collected things and documents related to his personality and family. It was the first private museum in the USSR. The building of the museum is not much different from the rest of the village houses on this street, but this is not the original house in which the Rasputin family lived, but a reconstructed one. The original one was demolished in 1980. Every Saturday and Sunday, at 11:00 am, a two-hour excursion is held.

Army barber’s 57 year legacy with the Airborne leads to haircutting hall of fame

By Patty Nieberg

Posted on Jun 21, 2024 6:34 PM EDT

5 minute read

Travis Bell, XVIII Airborne Corps barber, poses for a photo in his barbershop at Fort Liberty, N.C., June 20, 2024. In recognition for providing a lifetime of consistent, quality haircuts for Soldiers at Fort Liberty, Travis Bell, XVIII Airborne Corps barber, will be inducted into The National Barber Museum and Hall of Fame, September 2024. (U.S. Army Photo by Pfc. Jason Sessions)

Travis Bell has been a barber at Fort Liberty, North Carolina for 57 years in a one-man shop inside the XVIII Airborne Corps’ sprawling headquarters building. He’s cut the hair of every kind of soldier, from privates to four-star generals, from paratroopers who jumped on D-Day to Medal of Honor winners. But this week the Army said he’ll be getting a reward of his very own.

In September Bell will be inducted into the National Barber Museum’s Hall of Fame .

The museum recognizes barbers who have made lasting impacts on the communities they serve. For Bell, that’s the soldiers who have served in the XVIII Airborne Corps over the last half century. Bell told Task & Purpose that he plans to retire after his award ceremony. Bell said he hates that he has to move on from the best job he’s ever had but at 84 years old, his body can’t work like it used to.

“If you plant a farm in the spring, it ends in the fall,” Bell said. “Everything comes to an end.”

But he said they’re all the same. He gave his first senior commander haircut to Lt. Gen. Robert H. York, who led the XVIII Airborne Corps in 1967, and since squared away the cuts of well known four-star generals like David Rodriguez, Eric Shinseki, Henry Shelton and Stanley McChrystal. Pictures of all of them adorn the wall of his small shop, along with current Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, who, Bell said, was not much of a talker.

Bell has also had countless war heroes pass through his chair, including Arthur “Bull” Simons. Simons was a legendary Special Forces officer who led the raid on the Son Tay prison camp in Vietnam. Simons, Bell said, was his first “full-bird” colonel to get a shave and haircut.

In a 2017 interview with an on-base newspaper, Bell estimated he had cut the hair of at least 35 four-star generals and 23 Corps commanders.

As a barber and religious man, Bell also often lends a listening ear to his clients. Sometimes they just need to talk to someone, he said.

One time, Bell prayed with a Colonel who was in his chair and told Bell about his prostate cancer diagnosis. A few months later, the soldier returned to tell Bell that the cancer was gone.

“He still comes in here and it’s still gone,” Bell said.

From the farm to headquarters

Bell grew up on a farm in Lumberton, North Carolina, one of 11 children including nine boys.

“We went to school two days a week and worked three, or went to school three days a week and worked two. Things were very different back then,” Bell told the Army .

In every family, Bell said, someone was in charge of cutting everyone’s hair. For Bell, it was his oldest brother, who also passed along the craft of cutting hair.

“I prayed and asked God, I said, ‘God, I want to be a barber. I don’t have the money. I don’t have the education.’ I couldn’t pass the test because I didn’t have education, but I did love God, so I kept on,” Bell said.

One Sunday, a friend from Bell’s church who was also a barber at then-Ft. Bragg’s E-4 Club, now known as the NCO Club, asked him if he wanted a job. After a few months at the club, Bell was offered a position in a small shop inside the XVIII Airborne Corps headquarters. At first, Bell was intimidated by the idea of cutting the hair of some of the highest-ranking leaders in the military.

“That’s one thing I was afraid of. I thought a general or sergeant major would just chew you out,” Bell said. But he soon learned that one thing soldiers value over rank is a good haircut.

“They ain’t gonna chew you out unless you mess up or something. But I got along good with them,” he said. “They’ve all treated me real nice.”

Bell has been through dozens of XVIII Airborne Corps commanding generals over the course of his career. He’s attended command change ceremonies, funerals and retirement parties.

Bell’s professional barber career began in the 1950’s when haircuts cost only 40 cents . By the time he came to the North Carolina base in 1967, the price of a haircut jumped to 90 cents a head. Now, he charges around $13 for a cut.

Bell said that the type of haircuts have changed over time from traditional high-and-tight cuts to fades.

“Back then, everybody wore the same type of haircut,” Bell said. “I’m not that good with a fade. It’s slower and it costs more. It takes longer.”

At one point, Bell said he was averaging about 80 heads a day. But now with more competition, Bell said there’s not enough money in cutting hair. Bell estimates that he’s done between 800 and 900,000 haircuts at Fort Liberty.

“God was opening the doors. He got me the best job I’ve ever had,” he said. “I’ve met about every kind of race you can meet and I loved it.”

Hall of Fame

With his award, Bell will join the ranks of other famous barbers throughout history like A.B. Moler , founder of the first American barber school in Chicago in 1893.

Bell said XVIII Airborne Commander Lt. Gen. Chris Donahue submitted his name to the hall of fame. Bell also said Donahue was “one of the finest men” that he’s ever met. “And I’ve been through 25 corps commanders,” he added.

In a statement to Task & Purpose, Donahue said Bell has been a fixture in the Airborne community.

“His loyalty and commitment to our team over the past 57 years is unprecedented. Travis is a great friend, loyal teammate, and has made tremendous sacrifices to serve XVIII Airborne Corps,” Donahue said. Bell, he insisted, is“the reason every Corps Commander has looked so sharp.”

In September, Bell will head to the museum for his award ceremony. It will be his first time traveling on a plane, though he did once get a tandem parachute jump from a team on base.

“It’s been a good ride,” he said.
