The top Amtrak excursions from Chicago

St. louis, mo.

St. Louis, MO

Illinois Service Line  Train time from Chicago: 4 hours and 45 minutes

The Gateway City is best known for the 630-foot arch towering over downtown (it’s worth visiting the historic landmark for a great aerial view of the city), but venture to neighborhoods like Central West End, Lafayette Square and Maplewood for art, Victorian architecture and locally-owned shops and restaurants.

Say cheers to St. Louis’s brewing past with a tour of the Anheuser-Busch flagship brewery , an ornate 1850s-era facility housing over 30 of the company’s brands. Afterwards, head to one of the nearly 65 crafts breweries St. Louis boasts—start with Earthbound , Schlafly and 4 Hands Brewing Co . Before hopping back on the train, fill up at nearby Levels , a Nigerian-inspired restaurant aiming to bring the spirit—and delicious food—of Lagos to the Midwest.

Cincinnati, OH

Cincinnati, OH

Cardinal Line  Train time from Chicago: 10 hours and 49 minutes

A two-state riverfront, historic German pork and beer manufacturing neighborhood and—if you time it right—a kitschy pig-themed road race are only an Amtrak away in Ohio’s third largest city. Head to the aptly named Over-the-Rhine district, where a world of 19th century European architecture, the Cincinnati S ymphony Orchestra , meat and cheese markets , breweries , and Cincy’s favorite scoops, Graeter’s , await. Finish off the historic charm admiring the over 80,000 volumes at downtown’s Mercantile Library , an impressive, brightly-lit space with a good sense of humor—especially when it comes to the terms of its 10,000-year lease.

Indianapolis, IN

Indianapolis, IN

Cardinal Line  Train time from Chicago: 4 hours and 54 minutes

With the perks of a big city and the friendly and affordable atmosphere of a small town, it’s easy to feel at home in Indiana’s capital.  Olympic-sized swimming pools were recently constructed inside  Lucas Oil Stadium  to house competitors just weeks before the Paris Olympics—a first for an NFL stadium and an expected record for the largest swim meet ever. Whether you visit to cheer on the swimmers or the Colts, savor brunch carbonara and a croissant at Gallery Bistro & Bar under a wall-sized Anthony Bourdain painting (the late chef visited Indy in 2010) and head across the street to snap your photo with a one of the many NDY sculptures.

Kansas City, MO and Kansas City, KS

Kansas City, MO and Kansas City, KS

Southwest Chief Line  Train time from Chicago: 12 hours and 30 minutes

Though forming distinct identities throughout its history, both sides of this city—often differentiated as either KCK or KCMO—captivate visitors with delightful recreation, thrilling sports and unexpected arts and culture, like boasting the most public fountains of any city in the world. After your train ride, stretch your legs on a walking tour with Urban Hikes KC (you’re bound to run into a fountain or two), offered in English or Spanish. Keep moving—and fill up—on the Missouri side at Chicken N Pickle , an indoor/outdoor recreation complex and restaurant with pickleball courts. Don’t miss the chance to catch a Kansas City Current game at the 11,500-seat CPKC Stadium , the first ever to be purpose-built for a professional women’s sports team.

Carbondale, IL

Carbondale, IL

Illinois Service Line  Train time from Chicago: 5 hours and 30 minutes

What could be more perfect for a city esacpe than wine and the outdoors ? Just outside the home of Southern Illinois University, you’ll find over 40 miles of vineyards and some of the best hiking in Illinois. Between the eleven wineries comprising the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail (tasting ranges from $1-$12 depending on the pour) and the endless private and public camping , trailer and RV sites in and around Shawnee National Forest , the Carbondale region provides a welcome escape from the city bustle. There are plenty of shuttle services between wineries, including affordable commutes in five Southern Illinois counties through Shawnee MTD Public Transportation .

Cleveland, OH

Cleveland, OH

Capitol Limited Line Train time from Chicago: 7 hours and 8 minutes

Along the shores of Lake Erie, Cleveland—”The Land” as it's known—is bursting with charm, proving it’s far from its ill-fitting reputation as another piece of the rundown Rust Belt. The city of neighborhoods has farm-to-table restaurants, cafes, bookstores and a diverse population ready to set the record straight. In Ohio City, stroll the cocktail bar-lined streets and take home a souvenir, and maybe even the scent of the city with a candle making class at Cleveland Candle Co . Explore the other areas of the city as you learn about Black history in Cleveland on a self-guided mural tour and even book  an overnight stay at the house where A Christmas Story was filmed—holiday season or not.

Milwaukee, WI

Milwaukee, WI

Hiawatha Line Train time from Chicago: 1 hour and 29 minutes

Chicago’s northern neighbor is an easily accesible getaway no matter the season, but head to the Cream City in the summer for an unbelievable array of water recreation and relaxation, international festivals and live music every night as the sun goes down. Delight in the painstakingly friendly atmopshere, whether you kayak between some of the city’s best breweries, jam out at weekly Chill on the Hill concerts or celebrate Black culture and heritage on Juneteenth .

Minneapolis–Saint Paul, MN

Minneapolis–Saint Paul, MN

Borealis Line  Train time from Chicago: 7 hours and 24 minutes

Set your sights on urban nature and Native American heritage when your train crosses the Mississippi into the Twin Cities. In fact, with 180 parks in Minneapolis, six blocks is the furthest you’ll have to walk to find one. Take in the flowing waters of the 53-foot waterfall at Minnehaha Regional Park or wind a kayak through the 22 miles of Minnehaha Creek, between the park and Lake Minnetonka. Before heading back to Chicago, graze on crickets with popcorn and elk tacos at James Beard Award winner Owamni , a one-of-a-kind indigenous restaurant using decolonized ingredients.

The 6 Best Train Trips To Take From Chicago

By staff in arts & entertainment on oct 9, 2015 4:00pm.

The Midwest loves its trains, and as the autumn leaves change colors, this might be the most beautiful time of year to take a weekend getaway by train. Take in the countryside views of Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin and beyond from a cushioned seat aboard one of these trains bound for some of our favorite cities outside of Chicago. Here are our favorite train trips to take from Chicago—and if your favorite getaway isn't here, let us know in the comments.

Milwaukee : In under two hours on the Amtrak, Chicagoans will find themselves at the train station in the heart of downtown Milwaukee to begin either an eclectic day trip or a weekend getaway to check out the many gems the city has to offer. From bars and great food, to art, bookstores and the river walk, visitors from the Second City will experience a getaway with an cosmopolitan feel while enjoying the city's quintessential Midwestern personality.

Highlights include the Milwaukee Art Museum and the Betty Brinn Children's Museum for excellent exhibits, Woodland Pattern Book Center for readings and a decidedly unique book shop, especially for poetry lovers. For food and drink, the classic German tavern, Von Trier's and the cozy bar with a hipster edge, Hotel Foster will satisfy if you find yourself on the East Side.

While downtown, must-do highlights include the Newsroom bar for great cocktails and beer in a classic, noir pub with a journalism theme. As a bonus, it is located next to Safe-House, just another extension of this best-kept secret gem.

Grab some well above average pub food at Swinging Door Saloon , a place that also has an engaging and casual "locals" energy to it with a friendly staff within a classic space. With every part of the city offering a diverse array of places to see and things to do, it is ideal for a weekend trip so many of its nooks can be fully explored. —Carrie McGath

Kalamazoo : Just over two hours away from Chicago on the Amtrak, writers and artists as well as beer lovers and foodies will be equally content in this charming and bohemian Southwest Michigan city. Do your own brewery hop or schedule one with West Michigan Beer Tours since Kalamazoo is home to over a dozen microbreweries both downtown and in the surrounding area.

For fine art, be sure to go to the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts to see a solid and significant permanent collection as well as compelling exhibitions. Also a literary hub that only continues to grow, see all manner of events from readings, to poetry slams and other spoken word performances. The presence of Kazoo Books and the Michigan News Agency just adds to the writer-friendly oasis Kalamazoo is at its core.

For foodies, Food Dance and Rustica are absolute musts. Off the beaten path is Rupert's Brew House a laid-back brewery with free shows, great beer (and housemaid rum!) and a pub dog, Captain Stooby, the brewery's 200 lb. Great Dane. O'Duffy's in the Vine Neighborhood is an authentic, friendly and cozy Irish pub with excellent pub fare and great rotating taps. For the "local watering hole," The Green Top Tavern is not to be missed as the bar with a mixture of beer tourists, hipsters and all other manner of longtime natives of the city. —Carrie McGath

Libertyville If you've only got a little bit of travel time, hope the Metra and get off at the Libertyville stop one weekend. It's a little over an hour of train time, and the train station is a short walk from fantastic places to eat, drink and shop. For finer dining, head to Tavern , or the newest sushi place in the area gaining great accolades, Shakou . If bar food is more your speed, check out Mickey Finn's , a newly relocated brew-pub that's long been a Libertyville favorite, both for its craft beers and its food.

Shopping includes everything from boutique home design stores to specialty shoe shops and Savory Spice shop , a gourmet spice purveyor on par with Evanston's Spice House. You can even catch a movie on the cheap at the old school Liberty Theatre .

Finally, if you could only spend time or money in one place, we recommend that it be Firkin . With amazing, creative entrees, a full bar of fantastic beers and wines, and an incredibly knowledgeable and friendly waitstaff, this tiny treasure will not disappoint. —Marielle Shaw

New Buffalo : Easily accessible via the Amtrak or the South Shore, this quaint resort town is especially a must-visit in the summer months, but is equally beautiful in the fall. Boasting a captivating lakeshore and pleasant beaches, it is a wonderful place to decompress and refuel from life in the big city. Also home to Oink's , once visited by Vice President, Joe Biden, is a wacky and wondrous spot to indulge in the joy of ice cream with huge selection of flavors.

For dining overlooking Lake Michigan, right near the beach, enjoy The Stray Dog pub and restaurant and Jimmy's bar for that local bar feel and an excellent New American menu and a rooftop patio. And of course, you can always try your luck at Four Winds Casino and free shuttles are available to get you there and back. —Carrie McGath

Memphis If there’s a place to slowdown and not be bothered by human drama, it’s on wheels of steel headed toward Memphis, Tennessee. On this ten-and-a-half hour train ride, let the city fade away and immerse yourself in a book, music or the scenery out your window as you slice through the cornfields of southern Illinois and ultimately the countryside of the upper south. Remember to pack some Soul with you too—you’re riding into Memphis, the home of Stax Records! For those who don’t know the label, they introduced the world to Soul greats such as Otis Redding and Isaac Hayes. —Ben Kramer

Grand Rapids, Michigan Here is a city that has culture, great food and lively nightlife. From the Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts with cutting-edge exhibitions and film viewings, to Meijer Gardens for public artworks among a beautiful and sprawling park, the opportunity for fine art culture is diverse and appealing.

Stella's burger and whiskey bar has what GQ called the best burger in America in 2012 with the added asset of arcade games, pinball and a great bar in a fun atmosphere. Across the street, continue your pinball game at Pyramid Scheme and stay later for a show, with events almost nightly in a hipster-punk atmosphere. Vault of Midnight is a must-do for comic book lovers, and it is worth crossing the street for a superbly crafted coffee at Madcap . —Carrie McGath

Commuter train with city skyline as backdrop

Roosevelt Road used to be ‘the’ Chicago railfan road. On less than a mile of viaducts just south of downtown, fans could catch passenger trains to and from many of the great Chicago passenger stations and associated coach yards. But intercity trains now only call at Union Station, and while commuters still roll, several iconic terminals and longtime coach yards are long gone.

Now Cicero Avenue (nobody calls it Illinois Route 50) is Chicago’s best railfan road — further out, running north-south and focused on freights and commuters more than intercity passenger trains. The scenery may not be world class, but the rail action is dense — 18 rail lines hosting about 650 trains per day along 42 road miles. Don’t decry “look-alike” commuter trains — six locomotive types lead Metra commuter trains in different paint, including several heritage schemes

Start in Skokie near the intersection of Skokie Boulevard (which becomes Cicero Avenue) and Dempster Street at the Chicago Transit Authority’s Skokie Swift terminal. The Skokie Swift is the most prominent operating remnant of the Chicago, North Shore & Milwaukee system and retains its interurban feel. Heading south, Skokie Boulevard parallels and then crosses under the Swift.

Rapid transit train on line surrounded by power lines

Enter Chicago proper on what is now Cicero Avenue. In quick succession, cross over the CTA’s Blue Line in the Kennedy Expressway median, then underneath the six-diamond (!) crossing of CPKC’s C&M Sub to Milwaukee and Union Pacific’s Harvard Sub. Both lines host Metra trains (128 total), and the CPKC line also has Amtrak. Mayfair tower used to govern this busy crossing, but was torn down in 1997. Train watching is difficult at this hot spot because both lines are elevated. If train schedules show something due on the CPKC, duck into Metra’s Mayfair station a few blocks down.

Passenger train passing through station platform

Three miles south, you’ll encounter Metra’s Milwaukee District-West line, also used by CPKC. While the Metra station is Grand/Cicero, most railfans know this area as Cragin for the nearby CPKC/Belt Railway of Chicago connection. The Metra station (accessible from the underpass) sits in the middle of the interlocking and makes a convenient train-watching perch. Starting here, BRC’s main line runs parallel to Cicero Avenue (but out of sight) until past Midway Airport.

Cicero next crosses UP’s ex-Chicago & North Western Omaha main line. UP’s M-19A diesel shop is a few blocks east, which primarily services Metra power assigned to ex-C&NW lines, but basically, all you’ll be able to see is the outside of the building: Kinzie Avenue runs along the UP opposite the shop, but the steep embankment from track level to road shields the activity from view. Metra trains are frequent (58 daily), and you can see UP freights, mostly interchange with NS and CSX via the Western Avenue corridor.

Just beyond the Eisenhower Expressway (I-290) is CSX’s lightly-used Altenheim Sub. Bridge problems on the east end limit the line to local service, primarily to Ferrara Candy (famous for Lemonheads and Atomic Fireballs!)  Farther south there’s an unusual at-grade crossing with CTA’s Pink Line, formerly the Douglas Park Branch. CTA’s Cicero station is at the crossing.

Rapid-transit train crossing street

Before the next railroad bridge, turn right on 25th Street then left on 49th Place to get to Metra’s BNSF Line (former CB&Q) Cicero station. The location at the east end of BNSF’s Cicero Yard provides views of through trains (Amtrak, Metra and BNSF) and yard action. Be warned most of the 100+ passenger trains don’t stop and come through at track speed!

Two commuter trains

After exploring the area around Cicero Yard, head south to encounter CN’s former Illinois Central Freeport Subdivision overhead. Never heavily used by Chicago standards, this portion of the line has been made quieter by CN’s EJ&E purchase. CN’s small Hawthorne Yard is just to west.

Just before Cicero crosses the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal, bump across an ungated CN industrial track (formerly IC subsidiary Chicago and Illinois Western). Make a quick right onto 40th St. (it looks like a driveway) and dodge trucks for about a half mile and you’ll come upon Watco’s Cicero Central, which serves a Koppers plant using ex-Milwaukee MP15ACs.

Back on Cicero after crossing the Chicago River, BNSF’s former Santa Fe main line is overhead followed by the Stevenson Expressway (I-55) and CN’s Joliet Sub, the former GM&O route to St. Louis, which also hosts 10 daily Amtrak trains and six Metras. BNSF’s Corwith Yard (intermodal) is about a mile and a half east. While good access points are hard to find, a driveway off of South St. Louis Avenue (north of 38th Street) will provide a clear view of CN crossing Corwith’s north throat.

Car traffic now gets heavier because Cicero Avenue is the main route to Midway Airport. BRC’s 59th Street Branch crosses overhead just north of the airport, but the big reward — BRC’s Clearing Yard — lies on the other side of Midway. Cicero Avenue provides the best views of Clearing, one of two double hump yards left in the United States. Variety abounds because all Class Is use Clearing and trains for CSX’s Bedford Park intermodal terminal on Clearing’s south side add to the action. Cicero has sidewalks on both sides over the BRC, so park nearby and walk up.

View of yard

The distinctive round tower of the Hilton Oak Lawn signals the crossing of Metra’s SouthWest Service. This was Wabash’s Chicago-Decatur, Ill., route, abandoned by Norfolk Southern south of Manhattan, Ill., since 1990. Metra’s 30 daily trains dominate the action, while NS has only a single local. Metra’s Oak Lawn Patriot station is just west of Cicero Avenue.

Aerial view of commuter train at station

Cicero next crosses over the Indiana Harbor Belt main line. But continue south across the Cal-Sag Channel and take a left on 135th Street. Bearing left again on South Claire Boulevard will take you to Blue Island’s eight-track Broadway rail crossing. IHB joins CSX’s Barr Sub and former Grand Trunk Western Elsdon Sub here, but you can find trains of every Class I in town while Metra, CSX and Iowa Interstate trains fly overhead on the nearby former Rock Island, visible from the crossing.

train tours from chicago

The road goes under the Metra-owned Rock Island route to Joliet several miles south, and Metra’s Oak Forest station on the west side provides convenient parking and wide-open angles.

Chicago’s outskirts are signaled by a crossing of CN’s former Elgin, Joliet and Eastern, “Chicago’s Outer Belt.” The “J” is much busier since it absorbed CN’s trains through Chicago starting in 2009.  Turn left off Cicero at Kildare Avenue to get to the suburb of Matteson where the CN’s Illinois Central and Metra’s former IC electrified commuter lines fly over EJ&E. Linking CN’s EJ&E and IC routes required constructing a long looping connection, but the best feature is an elevated railfan viewing platform. The railfan platform provides good views of the connection and the Metra/IC main lines, but better angles of the EJ&E may come from the Main Street crossing nearby.

Appropriately, the last stop on this railfan road is University Park, the southernmost station on Metra and the end of electrified territory. Because Metra equipment lays over here, it’s easy to work shots of Metra EMUs with passing CN freights.

Freight train passes parked electric bilevel equipment

Worth stopping for:

  • Tired of driving? Try riding. Metra offers a full-system pass for $13.50 weekdays, $10 for a full weekend, or $7 Saturday or Sunday. A CTA day pass is only $5.
  • Chicago specialties . What Cicero Avenue lacks in fine dining, it makes up in local fare. Two of Chicago’s best Italian Beef spots are along Cicero: Roma’s in Mayfair and Scatchell’s in Cicero. Many Chicagoans swear by Portillo’s hot dogs and Polish sausages, which you can sample at a new location on Cicero next to CN’s Freeport Sub. For deep dish pizza, try Louisa’s on Cicero in the south suburbs.
  • Blue Island beverages . Only 0.3 miles west of the Broadway crossing in Blue Island is the Rock Island Public House , named for the tracks nearly in its backyard. There are plenty of pinball machines to play between trains.

If time is short:

Plant yourself at a location and let the trains come to you, especially during rush hour. Two of the best are along BNSF ‘s ex-CB&Q Chicago Sub (although the farther-out suburbs offer better scenery) and the busy Broadway crossing at Blue Island.

Besides the railroad:

You won’t find Chicago’s prime tourist attractions along Cicero Avenue’s gritty neighborhoods. But two sporting venues are near the route: Hawthorne Race Course offers weekend horse racing and SeatGeek Stadium hosts men’s and women’s pro soccer.

‘Big Boy,’ the 1.1 million pound train, set to tour US: Will it stop in Chicago?

D ENVER ( KDVR /NEXSTAR) — Will Union Pacific’s legendary “Big Boy” steam locomotive stop in the Chicago metro area during its upcoming tours across much of the U.S.?

One of the world’s largest trains will pass through a number of states this summer and fall, making stops along the way to allow viewers an up-close look at the massive, 1.1-million-pound engine.

According to the Union Pacific Railroad , the train known as Big Boy No. 4010 is the world’s largest operating steam locomotive.

On its website, the railroad company reflects on the history of Big Boys , which started as 25 trains that were 132 feet long and originally weighed 1.2 million pounds. Today, all are out of service, and some are on display – except for one.

Big Boy No. 4014 was delivered to Union Pacific in December 1941 and retired just 20 years later after traveling over a million miles. Thanks to a multi-year restoration process, the railroad company said the train hit the tracks again in 2019 to  celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Transcontinental Railroad’s completion .

Now, the train is up and running and heading through the United States, first on its summer “Westward Bound Tour” from Wyoming (June 30-July 4 and July 23-26) through Utah (July 4-6 and July 19-22), Nevada (July 6-9), California (July 9-14) and Idaho (July 22-23).

You can find out where and when Big Boy is stopping along the way on the Union Pacific website .

After the trip west, Big Boy will embark on an eight-week “ Heartland of America Tour ,” which starts in Wyoming in late August. The train will pass through Arkansas, Colorado, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Texas.

Rail buffs can see Big Boy during the following scheduled stops :

  • Sunday, Sept. 8:  Rochelle, Illinois (Chicago metro area)
  • Sunday, Oct. 6:  Houston, Texas
  • Thursday/Friday, Oct. 10-11:  Fort Worth, Texas

The railroad company said the train plans to only make quick stops, or “whistle stops,” in other states.

In all, Big Boy will have traveled through 14 states in 2024.

They will announce additional stops and approximate times closer to the tour.

Metra proposes major fare structure, zone changes for 2024

WLS logo

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Metra is seeking public comment on its proposals to make some major changes to their fares.

The proposal would create a simplified fare system for Metra riders. The commuter train currently has a 10-zone fare system, and prices for some tickets are based on the number of zones traveled. In the new proposal, there are only four fare zones. Downtown stations would be in Zone 1, and outlying stations would be in Zones 2 through 4 based on their proximity to downtown, service patterns and ridership characteristics on each line.

One-way tickets to Zone 1 would cost anywhere from $3.75 to $6.75 depending on your zone. All one-way tickets that don't include downtown as a starting or ending point would be $3.75 regardless of the distance.

A day pass would cost twice as much as a one way ticket and be valid for unlimited rides in one day in the zones selected. The 10-ride ticket would be replaced by a bundle of five day passes, which would only be available on the Ventra app.

The monthly pass would be priced at 20 times the cost of a one-way ticket: $75 for Zone 2, $110 for Zone 3 and $135 for Zone 4.

The $6 and $10 day passes and the $100 "Super Saver" monthly pass, all introduced during as pandemic promotions, would be discontinued.

Reduced fares of about 50% for seniors, K-12 students and active duty military would be available for one way tickets, day passes, day pass bundles and monthly passes.

There would be no changes to the $30 Regional Connect Pass for CTA and Pace fares for monthly pass buyers, and Metra will continue to sell the $7 Saturday, Sunday or Holiday Day Pass as well as the $10 Weekend Pass on the Ventra app only.

More information about the proposed changes and steps to provide feedback can be found on Metra's 2024 Fare Plan website .

70M set to ride trains, planes and automobiles over Fourth of July

By art raymond, deseret news | posted - june 24, 2024 at 7:57 a.m., tsa officer jaime bueno helps holiday travelers go through security at salt lake city international airport on dec. 18, 2023. travel volumes are expected to easily surpass 2023 levels for the upcoming fourth of july holiday. (laura seitz, deseret news).

Estimated read time: 3-4 minutes

SALT LAKE CITY — Travel volumes are expected to easily surpass 2023 levels for the upcoming Fourth of July holiday, with AAA projecting nearly 71 million U.S. travelers will venture 50 miles or more from their homes to celebrate Independence Day this year.

While most of those revelers, about 85%, will be hitting the roads, airline travel is expected to be up big from pre-pandemic levels, with over 5.7 million taking to the skies for the holiday, a 12.3% boost over 2019. Industry watchers say the air travel increase reflects more vacationers planning longer trips this July 4, a dynamic boosted by the holiday coming on a Thursday this time around.

"Travelers are opting to take longer trips with Independence Day falling on a Thursday," Brian Ng, senior vice president of membership and travel marketing for AAA Utah, said in a press release. "This further fuels summer travel demand that is showing no signs of slowing down."

The cost of getaways always matters and thanks to an unusual summer ebb in gasoline prices — the national average for a gallon of regular was $3.46 on Thursday, about 13 cents cheaper than it was a month ago — along with domestic airfares that are running about 2% lower than this time last year, Independence Day trips will come with a little less overhead this summer.

AAA says it expects about 61 million people to do their holiday traveling by car this year, while more than 4.6 million people are expected to use other modes of transportation, including buses, cruises and trains. This category, according to AAA, is seeing an increase of 9% compared to last year , but this year's number is shy of 2019's figure of 4.79 million.

Fourth of July travel predictions come with an asterisk this year as AAA reports it is casting a wider travel period net and including the Saturday before the holiday, June 29, through the Sunday following, July 7, in its travel volume estimates. In previous years, the projections included just a single weekend in the holiday travel window.

Using an analysis provided by INRIX , a provider of transportation data and insights, AAA reports the worst times to travel by car before and on July Fourth are between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Drivers should hit the road in the morning, and travelers returning on Monday, July 8, should avoid rush hour traffic in the morning and afternoon.

"Drivers in large metro areas can expect the worst traffic delays on Wednesday, July 3, as they leave town, and Sunday, July 7, as they return," said Bob Pishue, transportation analyst at INRIX. "Road trips over the holiday week could take up to 67% longer than normal. Travelers should monitor 511 services, local news stations and traffic apps for up-to-the-minute road conditions."

Water-adjacent locales are poised to loom large on the destination lists of those traveling domestically for the holiday. Top U.S. travel destinations for the July 4 holiday, per AAA, include:

For those aiming to find their Independence Day bliss outside the country, here are the top international destinations for this year's July 4 travelers, according to AAA:

  • Vancouver, B.C.
