Nagsasa, Anawangin, and Talisayen all come from one fabric, sprinkled by the same volcanic ash. This humble cove in Zambales is the lesser-known stepsister of Nagsasa and Anawangin Cove, and often gets overlooked.

What sets Talisayen apart from its stepsisters is its peaceful, quiet, and more laidback atmosphere. This is one of the reasons why it appeals to a different type of travelers, often to those who are more into making their own trail and adventures.

Other than swimming and sunbathing, this cove serves as an excellent spot for stargazing. While there, challenge your friends to spot the brightest stars and constellations. It’s a fun way to spend the night!

Camara Island is just 10-20 minutes off Pundaquit. It’s a rocky spot with a short stretch of sand that serves as a fantastic backdrop for taking pictures.

It’s a small island that’s no bigger than the size of a football field. It may be humble in size, but it has an astonishing view of Pundaquit and its scenic mountains.

People riding horses in El Kabayo Stables

El Kabayo is arguably the best place to learn and go horseback riding in the country. The establishment is tucked in Subic Bay Freeport Zone, Zambales and is home to healthy and friendly horses.

The ranch is simply captivating with its well-kept lawns, huge ground space, and country-style building. The stables are supervised by Wildlife In Need, a non-government organization that specializes in animal care and welfare.

All proceeds acquired from the riding activities go straight to the care and well-being of the beautiful horses. You can avail of horseback riding lessons and a guided ride through the lush forest of El Kabayo falls.

Zambales is home to the Philippine Carabao Mango. Pick and savor on some sweet mangoes at Rosa Farms. It’s a 12.5-hectare mango orchard situated along the National Highway in San Marcelino-San Antonio Boundary, Zambales.

The mangoes, the herb garden, the swing, the country store, and the café - there’s so much goodness offered here. The farm has a “Pick & Pay” program, which lets guests pick mangoes straight from the trees. It’s perfect for mango-hungry kids and adults!

Go on a side trip and experience Zambales’ historical side with the beloved former Philippine President, Ramon Magsaysay’s ancestral house, in the town of Castillejos. The house was restored and converted into a museum back in 1990.

The National Historical Institute reconstructed and renovated it in 1999 after it was severely destroyed by the Mt. Pinatubo eruption in 1991.

The modest yet charming two-level structure contains memorabilia and some personal remembrance about the former president, such as pictures and medals.

Some of Ramon Magsaysay’s sharp Barong Tagalogs are displayed in the historical site. You can also find his vintage Presidential car, the Willy Jeep, in the museum.

You should pay a quick trip here to find more about why Ramon Magsaysay was well admired and respected by the people.

Outdoor Activities in Zambales

If you’re looking for an adventure-packed vacation, Zambales offers plenty of outdoor activities. Here are some of the top activities you can enjoy during your visit:

Beach Resorts in Zambales Philippines

Beach hop and hike a trail… at the same time!

Having the perfect diving spots isn’t the only thing that Zambales is proud of. Having beautiful seas also means having beautiful beaches. Potipot Island and Anawangin Cove is just some of the most visited beaches in Zambales. The white-sand Potipot Island and its peaceful open skies and driftwood atmosphere make it a famous island getaway. Meanwhile, Anawangin Cove’s hills and cream-sand beaches are perfect for relaxation. Generally, people visit Zambales’s beaches because most allow beachside camping and cooking.

If that’s not enough, you’ll be surprised that some of Zambales’ beaches aren’t just seaside, tanning, swimming paradises. Some beaches, like Capones Island, have a rocky trail visited more often than its small pocket of a cream-sand beach. This is because at the end of the trail, at the highest peak of the small island, is an abandoned Spanish Lighthouse that looks like it’s taken from a vintage postcard. If you don’t fancy taking pictures of antique buildings, you’ll definitely appreciate the view of the open skies and deep blue waters.

Mount Pinatubo Crater Lake by shotbymikafrbs via Unsplash

Hike to Mt. Pinatubo, and see nature’s wrath and love

Zambales has several mountains that are perfect for hiking enthusiasts. Mount Pinatubo is a popular choice, with its breathtaking views of the crater lake. Another great option is Mount Tapulao, known for its scenic trails and lush forests. If you’re up for a challenge, you can also try hiking up the rugged terrain of Mount Balingkilat.

Considered one of the most destructive natural calamities in Philippine history, the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo in 1991 has taken kilometers of houses, farmlands, and even lives. Today, Mt. Pinatubo in Botolan, Zambales, has become a hiking destination.

Plenty of tour packages are offered, but you may also organize your own tour. The roads are suitable for heavy-duty four-wheeled trekking vehicles so hiking time can be reduced. The trail that needs to be trekked on foot is just half an hour’s hike at most.

The aftermath of the 1991 eruption is still visible in some parts of the trail, such as the gloomy, grey-colored lahar deposits you’ll most likely encounter in your trek. However, above the trail is the Crater Lake, an oddly beautiful lake that was formed after the volcano’s eruption. The Crater Lake, sometimes called Mt. Pinatubo Lake, stands proudly in the center of the grey environment, an oasis in the grey desert. There’s nothing more rewarding than seeing the lake at the end of your tiring trek and witnessing nature’s ability to destroy and create.

(Tip: For beach or island hopping adventures, hiking, and seaside relaxing, visit Zambales during the dry season, which generally occurs from October to June. Avoid the wet season as hiking may get difficult or impossible.)

The Glamp Zambales

Beach Camping

Camping on the beach is a must-try activity in Zambales. Anawangin Cove, Nagsasa Cove, and Silanguin Cove are some of the most popular destinations for beach camping. You can rent a tent or bring your own and spend a night under the stars while listening to waves crashing on the shore.

Surfing in Liwliwa, San Felipe Zambales photo by hectorhannibal via Flickr

Zambales is also a surfer’s paradise, with several beaches offering great waves for surfing. San Narciso and San Antonio are two of the best spots for surfing in Zambales. If you’re a beginner, you can take lessons from local instructors who will teach you the basics of surfing.

Subic Bay Yacht Club photo via FB Page

Plunge underwater to see shipwrecks or get on a yacht

Zambales, a province directly facing the sea, is blessed with plentiful dive spots. Subic Bay, for one, is one of the most known diving spots in the province for its picturesque views of the open sea and the most unique diving sites.

Subic is a first-class municipality with an active military history during the American Period in the country. It was a functional military base even after the end of the Second World War. The accumulation of shipwrecks in Subic Bay has now turned into hot diving spots and a favorite hangout place for various schools of fish! There are plenty of diving resorts along Subic Bay. Arizona Dive Shop in Olongapo City is one of the most well-known. SCUBA Tech Philippines, in the same city, also offers diving lessons for beginners.

Subic Bay is also known for hosting national regattas. Subic Sailing, the “home” of the Saturday Afternoon Gentlemen Sailors (SAGS), holds races annually and hosts sailing lessons. Watch others set sail or learn to do it on your own.

Get away from the crowds and closer to nature.

If you plan to have a quieter vacation in Zambales, there are some tranquil destinations that you can go to.

Anghalo Falls in San Felipe is a less visited place and is the ultimate pot of gold for trekkers. The trail to Anghalo Falls starts out with mostly flat grassland before turning rockier and steeper. Nevertheless, the 15 to 20-minute trek to this beautiful water world shouldn’t hinder anyone who wants to chill out in Anghalo Falls’ cool water.

If you plan to be more hands-on with the wild, Wildlife In Need (WIN) in Subic Bay can be another destination. WIN is a California-based non-profit organization that expanded in the Philippines. The staff would be more than happy to accommodate guests who want to see rescued monkeys or birds or learn a thing or two about Philippine biodiversity.

Whether you’re a nature lover, an adventure seeker, or just looking for a fun-filled vacation, Zambales has something for everyone. From hiking to beach camping to surfing, there are plenty of outdoor activities to keep you busy during your stay.

tourist spot sa zambales

This guide will be your compass to the must-see tourist spots, unveiling destinations that promise enchanting beaches, stunning mountain views, and rich cultural experiences. Your adventure through Zambales awaits, and each moment is poised to become a memory you’ll cherish forever.

Table of Contents

Discover Anawangin Cove

Anawangin Cove is like a hidden gem tucked away in the province of Zambales, Philippines. What makes it special is its unique landscape. Picture this: a backdrop of lush, green hills meeting up with a vast expanse of gray volcanic ash that stretches down to meet the sea.

Unique Landscape and Ashy Sands

The ash is a vestige of Mt. Pinatubo’s historic eruption, and it gives the beach at Anawangin a distinct look and feel. Unlike the typical white or golden sands of tropical beaches, Anawangin’s shores are a mix of gray and black, creating a contrast with the clear blue waters that is simply mesmerizing.

Camping and Outdoor Activities

You can set up camp under the beachside pine trees (quite unusual for a tropical country like the Philippines, right?). It’s perfect for nature lovers and those who enjoy outdoor activities like beach volleyball, frisbee, or simply stargazing by a bonfire at night.

Access Via Boat or Trek

You’ve got two main ways to reach Anawangin Cove. Hop on a boat for a short ride from nearby Pundaquit, or if you’re up for it, trek through the lush trails and over the hilltops to get there. The trek might be challenging, but the views are rewarding!

Nearby Attractions: Capones and Camara Islands

While you’re in the area, why not visit the nearby Capones and Camara Islands? Capones is famous for its historic lighthouse, while Camara is a haven for its rugged rock formations. Both are just a short boat trip away and well worth the detour.

Adventure at Mt. Pinatubo

Mt. Pinatubo is infamous for its 1991 eruption, one of the largest of the 20th century. Today, it’s a serene spot that shows how nature can both destroy and create beauty.

Volcanic History and Global Impact

When Mt. Pinatubo erupted, it changed the landscape and even impacted global temperatures with its ash cloud. Now, this history is part of what attracts adventurers to this remarkable site.

4×4 Rides and Trek to the Crater

To get up close, you’ll bump along in a 4×4 vehicle across the Crow Valley’s moon-like terrain. Eventually, you’ll trek toward the summit where a stunning, crystal-clear lake awaits within the volcano’s crater.

Scenic Views and Crystal-Clear Lake

Once you reach the top, you’re met with awe-inspiring views of the crater lake whose waters are a beautiful shade of blue-green – a stark contrast to the barren landscapes you passed earlier.

Health and Safety Tips for Hikers

Prepare for the trek with sturdy shoes, sun protection, and plenty of water. Also, heed local advice for hiking conditions as the weather here can be unpredictable.

Sun, Surf, and Sand at Crystal Beach

Crystal Beach is the go-to place in Zambales for beach lovers and surf enthusiasts. With its long stretches of sand and welcoming waves, it’s perfect for everyone from surfing newbies to seasoned pros.

A Surfing Haven for Beginners and Pros

ZAMBALES TOURIST SPOTS AND TRAVEL GUIDE

Zambales Tourist Spots | Travel Guide covers various tourist attractions as well as hotels and resorts with links to a booking site.

Zambales: The Wreck Diving Capital of the Philippines

When people speak of a notable wreck diving site in the Philippines, many would probably point to Coron around Palawan, with the bay itself being home to the sunken Japanese ships that remain in its depths still. But little did some of us know that the title of the “wreck diving capital of the Philippines” lies somewhere northern, particularly within Central Luzon and faces the West Philippine Sea—the province of Zambales.

Zambales, a province a few hours away from the capital city of Manila, owned the title simply because of the number of wreck diving sites that surround its waters, essentially beating Coron and elsewhere by a handful. Most of the province’s wreck sites are concentrated around the Subic area which has been formerly the site of one of the largest naval bases that were operated by the Americans.

According to history, the waters around Subic were the host to as much as 25 Japanese ships that were sunk during World War 2, but a good number of which salvaged soon after to pave way for commerce involving shipping. Although mostly based on hearsay, it is believed that at least 10 ships remain underseas of Subic. But this is not counting still the many other sea vessels, both small and big alike, that were consumed by Zambales’ sea even before the second world war broke out.

However, being a place with so many wreck sites does not necessarily insinuate that the locations are up to par with the best experience. Although there is a few that may seem magical for most people’s taste, a big portion of the sites may seem stale for their lack of marine life and quality of visibility.

Furthermore, the shores around Subic, which is a region at the lower end of the province, are themselves not particularly at the same level as the beaches around the Visayas and Mindanao areas which are known for their pristine, blue or turquoise, waters as well as fine white sands.

But choose to venture further north, particularly around the town of San Antonio, and you bring yourself to some of the province’s best locations, involving coves and islands offshore.

Zambales Tourist Spots | Things to do

Seize the Day: The Zambales Adventure

Seize the day or also known as Carpe Diem, that is what most tourists and enthusiasts have to say whenever they are given a chance to live a day to the fullest. It means that when an excellent opportunity knocks, then make the most out of it. Perhaps, this is also the same line that I can give as a piece of advice for those who would like to visit the Province. Yes, we are going to explore more of this beautiful province as we go ahead of this article.

Casa San Miguel (Zambales Tourist Spot)

This castle which was built back in 1921 is also a place to visit in the area. This Zambales tourist spot is situated in the middle of a 150hectare mango orchard, this is also the place where you could spot the Museum of Community Heritage. It offers a restaurant, guest rooms, a concert hall, and even a pre-school area.

ZAMBALES TOURIST SPOTS

If there is one thing that best defines Anawangin Cove as a tourist destination, it is that of people who chose to spend the night in the tent, essentially making the inlet itself a hotspot of tents at peak times. But this is for a good reason—as there are not any established hotel establishments in the area, visitors have no choice but to pitch a tent and spend the night going back to basics.

Capones and Camara Island (Zambales Tourist Spot)

These Zambales tourist spots despite being two separate landmasses in the middle of the ocean, it is hard to separate Capones and Camara Island for their relatively close distance to one another and, not to mention, to the coastal village of Pundaquit itself, a common launching pad to these areas. Capones Island, by the way, is often a place of visit for the still-standing lighthouse atop the island and the clear water in the area.

ZAMBALES TOURIST SPOTS

People who would love a more isolated space from the crowd often end up in Nagsasa Cove for its serene ambiance. While most top-visited beaches in the country are known for their white sands, Nagsasa Cove—and also Anawangin Cove—are identified for their gray sands, a reminder of the cataclysm that was the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo.

Alwasan Lanum Cave (Zambales Tourist Spot)

Go inside the cave and get to witness the waterfalls inside. What is best about this Zambales tourist spot is that you can take a bath, and at the same time enjoy the chill vibes inside the cave. Just listening to the sound of cascading water is very satisfying.

Botolan Resettlement Sites

This place may be the perfect place for you if you more after the immersion experience with the natives or the Aeta community. The place served as their haven or resettlement area when the Mt. Pinatubo back in 1991. Now, being in this place will give you the chance to mingle with the locals and learn from them. A new spot here is a place that allows one to see the crater of the volcano.

Camara Ancestral House (Zambales Tourist Spot)

This Zambales tourist spot is owned and named after the governor of the province back then, Vicente Camara. The place also happened to be the headquarters of the Japanese invaders during the Japanese colonization and the war era. The site in total is a manifestation of beauty and grandeur as evident with its structural design.

ZAMBALES TOURIST SPOTS

This Batanes-like lighthouse will give you the countryside feeling. Moreover, this  Zambales tourist spot allows you to see the view from a scenic spot. Better to be here to witness the sunrise for it is indeed the best view to catch.

El Kabayo Waterfalls (Zambales Tourist Spot)

Whether it is the 4-feet high or the 15-feet high, both of these falls in this area could give you an ultimate beat the heat adventure. Take a swim in the fresh cold water and enjoy the ultimate experience!

Fort Paynauen (Zambales Tourist Spot)

This Zambales tourist spot functioned as a prison for locals and Spanish alike during the Spanish colonization. Thus, being here will make you feel that you are part of a mysterious and at the same time creepy history of the country. This, of course, is very educational at the same time.

Hike a Mountain

Hikers and trekkers alike will find the place as a perfect spot for their interest. Mt. Pinatubo as the target destination, one cannot help but feel amazed by the scenic view once the peak is reached.

Island Hopping (Zambales Tourist Spot)

May it is in Anawangin, Camara, Capones, and Nagsasa, all of these beaches offer a unique and exciting experience. Though these places are not highly commercialized, you will undoubtedly feel the peace and serenity that you’ve been looking for.

ZAMBALES TOURIST SPOTS

This special economic zone follows a particular set of rules and regulations to maintain the overall peace and order of the place. In being here, you will feel like you are visiting an American place paired with the warmth of Filipino culture and tradition.

Sunset Watching at the Beach

Nothing is more romantic than watching the sunset over the horizon of a body of water. Sit, relax, and enjoy the view. Somehow, it gives you a feeling of peace and hope. As you watch the sunset, there is also a small voice within you, telling you that there will be a brand-new day to seize.

Spending the Day in the Beach (Zambales Tourist Spot)

May it be actual swimming or just basically having some tanning session, a stay in the Beach will always be a great activity. Might as well take advantage of the fine sand and the clear water and enjoy the activities that it has to offer.

ZAMBALES TOURIST SPOTS

This specific place serves as the resting place or the memorial place of the mighty soldiers who fought for the land back in World War II. The area is entirely historical, making it a spot for those who would like to get a glimpse of the historical site of the province. Spending a quiet afternoon here will give you the chance to reflect and contemplate everything.

Camping at the Beach

Since the beaches in the area are not highly commercialized, expect that you will do some camping. Yes, doing camping on a beach is extremely exciting! Imagine having a stargazing activity just after the bonfire? The Anawangin and Nagsasa cave among the  Zambales Tourist Spots are the perfect places for this. This is a romantic activity.

The deep-sea city or also known as the beach city will always have something surprising for you. May it be swimming or diving, all of these are possible. No wonder that the place is famous for both locals and foreign tourists. You can head and take a walk at Subic Bay or have a fantastic swimming adventure at Baloy beach, Camayan beach, or the famous inflatable island.

Zambales, with its close distance to a lot of places, is expected to flourish more in the coming years. I hope that as early as now, you get to experience the beauty of it. Good luck and have a Happy Trip!

7 Tourist Spots for Your ZAMBALES ITINERARY

tourist spot sa zambales

Last updated: 26 April 2024

Zambales is a popular getaway destination because of its proximity and accessibility from Metro Manila and nearby cities. It provides visitors with beautiful beaches, stunning views of coves, outdoor experiences, and affordable destinations. There are many buses that travel from stations in Manila to different parts of the province – the fare will vary depending on the terminal where you will depart and the terminal where you choose to be dropped off.

If you’re planning to visit the province, here are some of the things to do and places of interest to include in your itinerary.

WHAT'S IN THIS GUIDE?

See the Stunning Crater Lake of Mt. Pinatubo

View this post on Instagram A post shared by G🦄 (@biehappygie) on Feb 13, 2019 at 1:29am PST

The devastation caused by Pinatubo’s eruption more than a decade ago has left permanent scars on the provinces near it. Fast forward to today, the slumbering volcano is now a popular tourist destination. Pictures of its stunning crater lake have attracted thousands of tourists. Your trip begins with a 4×4 ride through rugged and bumpy dirt roads, streams and lahar-carved surroundings.

After the ride, you’ll have to trek for a couple of hours through mostly flat surfaces before you reach the lake. The spectacular views and the azure-tinged waters will immediately revitalize your tired body and aching muscles. You can have a picnic here with the crater as your backdrop before returning to the jump-off point. There are several day tours from Manila, but you can manage to DIY. However, if you choose go on your own, start early.

Enjoy Island-hopping

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Philippine Beaches & Beyond (@philippinebeachlist)

One of the reasons Zambales is popular is because of island-hopping. You can visit a handful of beautiful islands with stunning bird’s eye views of the coves. The usual destinations include Capones Island , Nagsasa Cove , and Anawangin Cove . These spots may not have the powdery, white shores of beaches you’ll find in Palawan, but they are beautiful in their own way.

Anawangin and Nagsasa both have viewpoints where you can go up to see the iconic views of their respective coves. Do the usual beach activities in any of the three islands such as swimming, sunbathing and camping. Boat rates vary depending on destinations you want to be included in the itinerary.

For a recent island-hopping daytrip, we were charged P3500 for two people. You can also pitch tents for a fee in both Anawangin and Nagsasa.

Experience the Great Outdoors

View this post on Instagram A post shared by DinoRod (@dnotrex) on Nov 2, 2017 at 7:59pm PDT

If you’re outdoorsy in search of adventure, take your bike with you to Subic. The city can serve as your jump-off point to the province’s ascending and descending hills, flat plains, and serpentine roads. Follow Mt. Samat’s and Pastolan’s trails to break out a sweat and enjoy the views along the way.

Chill on Potipot Island

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Eibner Saliba (@eib.saliba)

For those who don’t want to do much during their visit, Potipot Island is the place to be. It only takes 15 minutes by boat from Candelaria, Zambales to reach this small but beautiful islet. You can easily explore Potipot because of its size. Wade in the waters, work on your tan, throw a Frisbee for a couple of rounds or so, take photos and just enjoy your stay. To get here, board a bus bound for Sta. Cruz, Zambales from Metro Manila. Tell the conductor you’ll alight at the barangay hall of Uacon. Then hire a tricycle to take you to the beach where the boats that can take you to the island are docked.

tourist spot sa zambales

If you want to rough it out and spend a night under a blanket of stars, go camping on one of the islands of Zambales. Anawangin Cove is a popular camping spot. It has a hill you can climb to get overlooking views of the island. There are also dedicated areas where you can pitch a tent. There’s an overnight fee of P100 and tent rental for P500.

Visit Ramon Magsaysay’s Ancestral Home

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Vincent Cruz (@beanzcruz) on Sep 20, 2018 at 6:02am PDT

The former president used to call Iba, Zambales his home. His house is still there and displays how Magsaysay used to live through memorabilia such as pictures, medals, barongs he used to wear, and pieces of furniture.

Ride the Waves

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Gally Ann (@ooohgaga) on Jul 5, 2015 at 4:27pm PDT

Zambales is also a possible surfing destination for those who want to try a new activity or hone their skills on a surfboard. The easiest place to do this is at Crystal Beach Resort’s shore. The waves are manageable for beginners and enough for surfers with experience.

You can find the Quicksilver Surf Camp near the resort’s shore. Surfing lessons go for P600 while board rentals go for P200.

Where to Stay in Zambales

Youhan Beach Resort

Zambales is a developed tourist destination with plenty of accommodation options. San Antonio , San Narciso , and San Felipe are possible places to stay because of the choices you have, and their proximity to the beach and transportation. You can go camping on one of the coves, either in Anawangin or Nagsasa.

Iba is another place to consider because of its nearness to the beach as well as its slew of resorts and guesthouses to choose from. Subic also provides many hotels for budget travelers and those who are willing to spend. The area also has plenty of shopping and dining options.
